Solve : "Ensure the Computers are on the same Workgroup"?

Answer»

Networking / Connecting computers.

I keep on finding the same message on the Forums:
"Ensure the Computers are on the same Workgroup".
This kind of confuses me. I have 3 computers running each in their own Workgroup and have no problems.

My Network Setup is:

*One Router (drives 3 PCs, DHCP and not)

* Laptop XP, Wireless
Workgroup: Mshome
Various shared files

*Desktop1 XP, Hardwired
Workgroup: IbmGroup
Various shared files

*DeskTop2 W2K, Hardwired
Workgroup: WorkGroup
Various shared files

-Printer hardwired into DeskTop2 and shared.

From each PC, all Shared Files on the other PCs are accessable.
Each PC has access to the Printer
No "Logon" to access the "Others" is required.
On the "Microsoft Windows Network" Panel are the 3 systems visible.
On the "My Network Places" Panel all the shared files are visible + the Router.

Even my daughter, when visiting and bringing her own Laptop (having a different WorkGroup) has no problem accessing the above 3 PCs , the files and the printer .

Any comment Please.NetBIOS. To properly answer your question I should speak about master browser and others, I should speak about broadcasting network names and network name requests. It takes a little while. Now, with windows XP and Vista I will have to dig a little to keep me up to date with the way the computers find other computers names in a local area network (windows name resolution). Windows 2000 and after use much more the DNS way of networking.

It is mentioned that message ("Ensure that computers are on the same workgroup") because more often than not, when the computers are not in the same workgroup it is pretty difficult to explain to a not computer aware person how to use the ip to connect to a computer they don't see in "My Network Places".

Later edit
***************************************************************
It seems that NetBIOS is the last INVOLVED in a name resolution query. See here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172218
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/119493

I'm apologizing for my previous wrong answer (I am talking about the part before the "Later edit" section of my answer). I'm searching further for detailed informations regarding windows workgroups.I read a little more about Windows Workgroups. The workgroups are just a mean to simplify the view of a network. You are doing that by defining that the computer is member of an "association" (workgroup) named in a certain way. In Windows 95 (for example) you could see in "Network neighborhood" only computers in the same workgroup. It is possible to access another computer, from another workgroup, by using it's IP address (I don't recall exactly if it's NetBIOS name was helpful in such cases).

My previous post is full of nothing, it can be ignored and nobody will miss a thing.

alexK, thank you for the question (I never asked myself the reason of windows workgroups).Viking, thank for your response.

The following may steer the Topic off subject.

Now in my days as programmer/analyst on the Main Frame I dealt with a facility called "RACF", quite unique!
You will now ask what this has to do with the PC platform.
But let me explain:
First: Your PIN was associated to A default Group, say "ABC".
If your PIN was NOT connected to a group "DEF" than you had no access to that Group.
Second: if your Group "ABC" had no access granted to other Groups "GHI" than there was no access.
Third: In each Group there were levels of PROD, TEST, DEVL. In this case a Development group could have READ ONLY access to say Structures in PROD, if granted.
Forth, in case of Emergency Maintenance, such as Operation Failure, or System Recovery than the person had to Sign-on in the "P" Group if the person was part of say "ABC -P".
A "RACF" report was produced to see who was snooping around, or was in groups where they did not belong.
Thus from the Main Frame view, it was quite secure.

On the PC platform, the above does not quite apply. I have not YET discovered in XP or W2K a method of "excluding" access to groups where they do not belong.
In my case where I have 3 distinct groups, I would grant access only to the ones I want. That way any un-authorized Group access via Wireless could (almost) not penetrate. Of course I could plug all the Ports I want, but that is too cumbersome. Using IP Addresses may only work if they are Static, not DHCP. On the Router Level I don't want to institute the WEP Key for certain reasons.

I would be wishful thinking if someone would have a suggestion to "GroupAccessPC", thus in case of a NEIGHBOUR or Drive-By could not access MyGroups, and produce an "Un-Authorized Access Report".
My U.S. Robotics Router (USR8054) has a Log and that is good for 20 PAGES on the screen only. It can produce a E-mail upon detecting a MAC Address, but a Drive-By can have any MAC-Address.
For Access-Only within the LAN via MAC-Filtering I have not found yet.

Thank you for your attention.

On a mainframe you have a Unix operating system (usually), but I think there are (were) other operating systems with multi-user support.

Windows XP is a workstation/home computer operating system. He has some pre-defined groups (Administrators, Power Users, Guest), you can't create other groups (as far as I know). Windows XP target is one computer and you set up security settings (rights to access resources) using mainly usernames and not groups. For each username you have some security settings. Of course, you may use the "predefined" user groups (but you want more, you want to "randomly" create user groups and to assign some security settings based on group membership).
In the Windows system operating world we are talking about groups (of users) in the way you are presenting the issue when we are opening the subject Windows Server (NT 4, 2000, 2003). There you can create groups, assign permissions to groups etc. On a "home computer" or "workstation" you have 1-2 users, permission to local resources is granted/denied to each user (usually). If the computer is member of a Windows domain (NT 4 domain, later Active Directory), then the security settings are applied to groups of users or users alone. You (member of Administrators group, or a user with rights to define groups) define the user groups on an active directory server or domain server, and you use the group name on any windows computer (server or workstation) part of that domain.

Windows XP and Vista come from a "single user" old idea. Now evolves to what Linux/Unix (multi-user operating systems) offer.

Windows workgroups are just a way to provide a simplified view of a network. They don't IMPLY security settings.

Regarding your second issue (unauthorized access to resources), all you have to do is to deny any rights to user Guest (disable it, deny user Guest any rights on your computer - no network access, no log-on right). Nobody should be able to access your computer resources without a valid user account on your XP computer. Of course there are flaws, but with updates you shouldn't have access problems (ideally; practically windows has some flaws and some are not solved for long time).

Solve : wireless connection doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I've got a problem with the wireless connection. I went to check to see if i could configure the wireless setting under network connections. When i right clicked on the wireless network connection, there usually would be three tabs on the top namely General, wireless network and Advanced. However, all i could find were only General and Advanced. The wireless network tab seems to have been missing.

I ALSO checked to see if the user has the administrator permission in the user accounts under control PANEL and it said computer administrator. So i believe the user is the administrator.

I don't know how to work around this. Could anyone help me on this?

Note: when i login as administrator, the wireless connection works like a charm without any problems at all. This problem only occurs when i login as someone but that someone is also the administrator. What's the difference here? very bizarre.

BTW, the machine runs on windows XP Pro.

Thank you in advance Home computer?Hi Viking,

Yes, it's a home computer. The wireless connection tab APPEARS in the wireless network connection under control panel when only logging in as administrator.

Any suggestion?

Thank you in advanceI am facing the same problem at the college with the students laptops..... so if any one knows how to solve this problem please guide us.

Thank youThis may help:

ENABLE Wireless Zero Configuration

1. Start, right click My Computer, Manage

2. In Services and APPLICATIONS, look for Wireless Zero Configuration

3. Make sure the Status is started and Startup type is set to automatic. If not double click and set it accordingly.

If it works, you should get the tab for Wireless Connections between General and Advanced. Ensure you have the latest drivers for you wireless addapter.

Solve : Dial up requests still showing on broadband?

Answer»

Hi folks
Even though I have broadband, occasionally a WEB page will ask me to connect to the internet via a dial up service, and wont let me into the requested web page until I CLICK connect, even though I no LONGER use dial up.
Can anyone advise how I get rid of these dial up requests?Open Internet Options in your browser...if you are using IE.

Click the Connection tab. Look inside the box that's labeled "Dial-up and Virtual PRIVATE Network Settings" for your dial-up connection.

Click it once to highlight it and then click the Remove button.

Make sure NEVER dial a connection is ticked.

Click OK.

That should do it.

Solve : Creating network bridge?

Answer»

I'm trying to setup a network bridge in my office. My desktop computer is connected with an internal wireless card. I created a bridge in my network connections between my wireless connection and my wired network card. Now if I plug a cable into my wired network card and then into another computer, the other computer should have a connection, right? I've done this before but now it's not WORKING.Ok I just TRIED the exact same thing except with my laptop and it worked fine. Maybe I just can't do this with a desktop for some reason? Is the desktop running a firewall?Just windows firewall, but I tried it with that turned off just in case, with no luck.Read the section about "Troubleshooting a Wireless Bridge" here. It seem some wireless cards needs a little extra configuration in order to work. Well I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I set it to promiscuous mode like the doc said and it's still not working! I know the nic works, because i've had it plugged in directly. I even tried a different one just in case, but got the same result.Do you think I may need to use a crossover cable? I'm using a patch cable, but it worked fine when I bridged with my laptop.Yeah that might be it. when you connect the two COMPUTERS with the patch cable do they detect a connection? There should be some LEDs on the NICs that lights up and the status for the connection in Windows should say connected. If not you probably need a crossover cable. No, neither of the nics on either computer light up. That might be the problem.

But it still has me confused why the patch cable would work when I used the laptop. If I remember correctly some NICs are able AUTOMATICALLY configure their Ethernet port so a crossover cable isn't necessary. If your laptop got such a NIC that would explain it. I can't remember the details right now but I'm pretty sure I read about it not so long ago. Thanks for the help.

I'll let you know if this works when I get a crossover cable. Here's the update.

I finally got the crossover cable and it works great!

Funny though, a regular patch cable will work if I use the laptop.... weird

Solve : PROXY SERVER will it help the speed of net browsing and online games??

Answer»

i have 14 PC's connected on my LAN and is connected to 1020kbps DSL to my router.

if i will have another PC to act as proxy server will it increase the speed of internet browsing and online games?

can some one give me article or GUIDE how it work and its setup?

thanks in advance! Setting up a proxy server would not help increase the speed of your internet browsing and online games for your setup. Usually a proxy is OPTIMAL in a corporate environment with 50+ computers.

How are the computers connected to the router? If it's direct I really don't think you could do anything more to improve the OVERALL quality. If you've got the router HOOKED to hubs you could switch out the hubs for network switches (connected to the router). Using a hub as part of the network can slow things down.

Appart from that suggestion (which isn't much) I think the best METHOD to increase network performance would be to increase your main internet connection.

If you're really wanting to try setting up a proxy try:

OKS THANKS FOR THE INFO.

Solve : Network File Sharing?

Answer»

Hey,

I have a home network that has 5 computers on it, all running Windows XP, fully updated with SP2 ect. Four of the computers are working perfectly fine, they can access the internet and share files with the other computers.

The 5th computer (named "pcthree") is the problem. It is connected to the network by a Ethernet cable and it is running Zone Alarm Security Suite and AVG Free. It can access the internet and the other four computers, the problem is that no other computer on the network can access the files on "pcthree". The other computers can ping "pcthree", access the web server running on it and connect to it remotely via remote desktop.

When I type "\\pcthree\" in the explorer address bar of another computer, it shows the printer on "pcthree" and the shared folder, but when I try to open "\\pcthree\shared\" it asks for my user information. When I enter a correct username and password it rejects it and shows the enter username and password dialog again. No matter which username I use (my account, another users account or the administrator account) it will not let me into the share. It is not just the "\\pcthree\shared\" share that won't work, NEITHER will the administrative shares such as "\\pcthree\C$" or any other share I create on "pcthree".

I have tried turning off Zone Alarm, and re-running the network setup wizard, but none of this helped.

I Hope I have explained my problem well enough and included all the information needed for someone to help me, as any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
brent85.This might soud stupid, but have you tried setting the GUEST password on pcthree? I had a similar problem and once I set the guest password (left it blank) then the others could access the shares.

I tried turning on the guest account, and then setting the password blank, but it didn't work. Thanks anyway though !

I forgot to add that I can't even access "pcthree" from "pcthree". For example if I try to access "\\pcthree\shared\" from "pcthree", it still asks for, and will not accept my user information.

Thanks,
brent85This problem is really annoying me, is there anyone that has a idea what is wrong?

Thanks,
brent85.Try going to the properties of your network card and enable File and Printer Sharing.

Ok, File and Printer sharing was already tuned on, but I put "pcthree" in safe mode with networking and was able to access its shares then...

Thanks,
brent85.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/prodtech/windows2000/w2kccadm/dataprot/w2kadm19.mspx

That may help. I would check the folder permissions.

The shared folder had read permissions for everyone, and full control for administrators.

Thanks,
brent85.Don't use blank passwords. You can't connect to a computer USING Windows XP wit a username and a blank password.

If pcthree can access other computers, why don't you copy from pcthree to other computers?

What are the settings for administrative tools->local security policy->user rights assignments->access this computer from the network and deny access to this computer from the network?

Are you sure there is no other firewall enabled? Quote from: viking on January 30, 2008, 07:33:49 AM

Oh ok, thanks. I disabled the guest account again anyway.

While that does work, it would be nice to be able to transfer files while sitting at a different computer. A workaround for that is accessing "pcthree" using Remote Desktop and copying files from it then, which is what I have been doing.

Access this computer from the network: Everyone, ASPNET, Administrators, Users, Power Users, Backup Operators

Deny access to this computer from the network: Support_388945a0

Yes, I am sure. The only installed firewalls are Windows Firewall and Zone Alarm Security Suite, and Windows Firewall is disabled. I do have AVG Free installed, but as far as I know it doesn't include a firewall.

Thanks,
brent85.When you say "a correct username and password", the username and password are valid on the computer with the share? Can you LOG on to that computer using those credentials? That user has rights on folders? (You say it's administrator but the best check is MADE simply by logging on with that username and trying to browse to that folder).Yes, the password and username I am using is valid on that computer, and an administrator. I logged on to "pcthree" with my user and I was able to access that folder, I defiantly had administrator access. Just to make sure, I added my user with full read-write control to the shared folder, and it still would not let me access it remotely. Also, I can use the same credentials to successfully logon to that computer using remote desktop.

Thanks,
brent85.

Solve : wireless not seeing files?

Answer»

I have three computers.
They are CONNECTED with a wireless router.
2 are hardwired. 1 is wireless.
The wireless one is able to use the internet connection, but I can't share files. The other two CAN.

What am I missing please?

Thanks,
JoeWhat operating systems: Windows XP? Home Edition or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2?

What is the make and model number of the wireless router?

All three have internet access thru the wireless router?

You want the computer on the wireless connection to share files with the two wired computers and vice versa?

Windows XP Home Edition uses "simple" file sharing. With Windows XP Professional you MAY either use "simple" file sharing or "advanced" file sharing (which PROVIDES greater control over who has access to the shared files).

Solve : Computers not talking?

Answer»

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help. I've had a lot of trouble with this problem.

I've set up my home network with a "Desktop" and a "Laptop" computer. They are sharing an internet connection through an ADSL Router (DSL-502T). Both share the internet and there's no problems. They have the following IP's

"Router" IP - 10.1.1.1
"Desktop" IP - 10.1.1.2
"Laptop" IP - 10.1.1.5

Both MACHINES using Windows XP SP2, although the Desktop will be getting upgraded in about 4 weeks when I get my Vista through (had ordering issues!)

I can ping the Laptop from the Desktop and vice-versa and they see each other. Both machines are in the same workgroup and appear in Network places. File sharing is enabled in both machines, and I have two directories (both are called "Personal" and "Downloads") - all shared.

So, in my mind, it should be networked. I should be able to access the files on my Laptop through My Network Places on my Desktop (and of course, vice-versa) but I can't.

I've gone through heaps of guides, EVEN TRIED Network Magic for a limited time (after 7 days, you have to pay), and I even took some advice that murdered my system and I had to re-install the whole system, but I again find myself back at the same place.

Does anybody have a clue about what I'm doing wrong for file and print sharing, and how to fix it? I don't mind if there's software like Network Magic, but I just spent my yearly budget on Vista and can't afford it!

Which version of Windows XP? Home Edition or Professional? The Home Edition only supports "simple" file sharing while Professional supports both "simple" and "ADVANCED" file sharing.

If you want to do some reading, here are two microsoft documents on the subject.

Solve : Installing Wireless Network?

Answer»

Assume that you and your friend live 3 miles far from each other. You two cannot use the INTERNET.You two have one computer for each .And you two want to install the wireless network to communicate each other. What is the steps to build a wireless network .The next thing I would like to know is about the wireless access point. What is the function of the wireless access point. How is it installed?Plese, tell me if you can. 3 miles = 5 kilometers
What hills and mountains ( ) are between you 2? Do you have to build two towers of 20 meters high to see each other?

If you have "direct visibility" between you than you are interested about wireless antennas with power enhancers - they are called wireless boosters. I have no idea how much they cost but they are not so inexpensive, they cost more than 2x80 USD (euro) for 2 wireless routers.

Why can't you use internet?
The function of an access point? It's an antenna, you connect wireless to it (by radio waves), using a communication protocol (802.11 b, g or n - in civilian commerce) and the access point relays further or transforms into a signal for wired communications (acts like a modem). Of course, we could talk about security and other things. How it is installed? You connect a wire to an RJ45 port (if it has; usually it has) or you simply power it up. You will have to make some software adjustments (see the access point/wireless router manual).
You connect an ethernet cable to the RJ45 port if you have to add a wireless network part to a wired network. Usually you connect your router to internet through a cable, which is inserted in the WAN port of the router.Thank for your answers Viking.I just really want to know how the wireless access point work.I haven't bought any access point. So I don't have any manual. If I want to use an access point what other thing else I NEED .Am I need to have other wireless devices to use access point. At least how far it's radio waves can GO and in what speed it can go.Please tell me if you could.Thank! You need to read about a tutorial about home wireless networks (I'm not so well prepared, I have to read too).

In your case there is something more than that, you need antenna boosters and these are just not so usual for SMALL networks. You have to ask about high gain antenna - some ISPs use something like this. I will study the subject a little and I will tell you what I find. This can be done but it is a lot of work. And in most cases not cheap. I would suggest you read up on it a little...

http://www.wkmn.com/newsite/wireless.html

This maybe a good place to start.

kta:

What are you really trying to do?

In other words, is wireless networking absolutely necessary? Maybe there is another way to accomplish whatever it is you want to do.

For example, if all you need is to connect and transfer files, chat live, etc., you can do that with a plain old dial-up phone line, and modems on both ends. True, the speed of transfer will not be as fast.

Heck, that's been done for ages. Plain old DOS software will do it. For the most simple connection, Telix would do it. Uncrippled shareware. So the software cost is zero.
If you want to download Telix, it can be found >here<
Four zip files.

For unattended dial up connections, log ins, transfers, etc., that too can be done with free software. (Ever heard of FidoNet? )

I spoke with some friends.

Results:
2 antennas - http://www.ral.ro/php/produse-32#WL-CA24 (California Amplifier, 24 dB); cost aproximatively 65 USD (almost - the price in your country surely differs).
access points with removable antennas (detachable antennas), something like ZyXel Ap 2454 - http://www.ral.ro/php/produse-22#WL-AP-2454
2 pigtail connecting cables with adequate jacks.

I quote (and translate accurately): "The antennas should be placed on pylons, they have to see each other. AP are for in-house use, you have to be cautious when you install them outside (grounding, protect from humidity and direct sun light). You have to align very well the antennas. If you want guaranteed connection (I could not promise that the SOLUTION I just gave will work) then use outside access points Aphelion (price over 500 USD for each).

I hope it helped you to make a decision.

Solve : Cisco Routers?

Answer»
Maybe someone can help me out here. I know how to recover a password from a router when I have access DIRECTLY to the router, but is it the same if you are far away? How would you power down the router if you can't access it? BASICALLY all I need to know is how to recover a lost password from a remote location. Anyone have any expertise in this area? THANKS in advance for any help.I don't think this is possible for very obvious reasons. If anyone could access or reset a router remotely without a valid password hackers would be on easy street.marco, you can't do that "remote". You have to be there, physically. Solve : Need help multiple router?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I'm trying to setup a multiple router network but I can't FIGURE out how to do it. The reason I need multiple routers is because one of them has a Printer USB plug that I need and the other one is wireless.

The two routers:
D-Link Router (More Info here:http://d-link.ca/products/?pid=272&sec=2)
Trendnet Wireless G Router (More info here:http://trendnet.com/products/proddetail.asp?prod=165_TEW-432BRP)

The setup I had before: The modem cable plugs in D-Link's WAN plug. There were 3 cables coming out of the D-Link router: 2 desktop computers and the printer. This setup worked for a long TIME, file sharing, printer sharing and everything. After that, I took another cable from the D-Link and plugged in to the TrendNET to enable Wireless with my Nintendo Wii and DS.

Recently, I bought a Notebook and I'm trying to connect wirelessly to the internet. I tried a couple things but it only made things worse: I can't even access Internet anymore from the TrendNET. The other network still works fine and if I connect the laptop directly to the D-Link, I can access Internet and the network.

I can access the D-Link setup page EASILY but I can't access the TrendNET's page anymore (don't know why, I could before I tried setting things up)

Basically, I'm trying to have both routers on the same Network. Hope you can help me.Woops, I forgot to say the cable going from the D-Link to the TrendNET is plugged in TrendNET's WAN plug.Factory reset your TrendNET and reconfigure it. You had things setup correctly before.

When you had them setup ORIGINALLY did the laptop detect the wireless network?Ok, I'll try that. Before I changed things, it detected the network and could access Internet, but couldn't see the other computers on the network. You're on a different router, quite possibly a different subnet as well. You probably won't be able to access the PCs on the LAN without some special config.

Solve : losing connection to belkin router grrr?

Answer»

have just installed a belkin wireless G router - at first successfully - one desktop pc (sony vaio windows xp) and one laptop (sony vaio windows xp)
my ISP is virgin media cable in the UK
All was fine for a couple of days but now while my desktop stays connected to the internet i keep losing my wireless laptop CONNECTION to the router. I search for available wireless networks, find my belkin one, connect using my password, it tries but fails to connect.
Belkin support (very good usually) told me to change the channel in the configuration page, which i did, and i got connected for a short while then lost the connection again. It should be an automatic connection anyway on startup.
What is it? Is INTERFERENCE from somewhere - is it just a RUBBISH router?
All suggestions gratefully accepted - in nontecchy speak please! You should try to configure the wireless router, try setting up a password or something. Also make SURE it is secured. If it still don't work, maybe its something configured is not right. But I doubt its the wireless router that is causing the problem.

Solve : Internet stops connecting?

Answer»

I will add one more problem to the long list of internet connection problems. This one I haven't seen before. When I connect to the internet I can only visit one or two sites and then the connection SEEMS to fail. According to my computer I am still connected. When I try to go to another site, I see the bottom left corner of the internet window goes back to done almost instantaneously. If I reboot the computer, modem and router it starts fine, but again I can only visit one or two sites. I have tried different sites it does not matter what sites I visit. I have connected other computers to the modem directly without a problem.

Thanks HI
ARE YOU VERRY NICYou have tried connecting directly to modem?
And other computers connect fine?
What OPERATING system is on the computer with the problem?
Is it protected with up to date anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall?
Have you tried a different network cable?

yesDownload, install, and run LSP-FIX: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
If not...
Download, install, and run WinSock XP Fix: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Restart computer, and check again.Have you tried separating the modem and the linksys router? The Linksys routers have more electronic noise than other routers. This noise can interfere with the router. Also, make sure that it is not near other electronic devices such as cordless phones, microwaves, electrical boxes, ETC.

Solve : Firewall Keeping My Computer from seeing each other?

Answer»

Windows xp SP2
Router: D-Link G Router
Firewall: Norton

I replaced my Netgear Router with D-Link G Router and everything works well except I can not view my other computers on the network unless I turn the Norton Firewall off. I've gone into the confirguration of my firewall to allow every possible program and file sharing, but to no AVAIL. I didn't have this problem with my Netgear Router and this firewall configuration, but I was USING a WEP encryption. Now I am using a WPA encryption with this router. Any suggestions

LaloNorton has been a source of aggravation for years

I'd dump Norton like a hot potato and use the routers firewall.

ALAN <>< What's the exact title and version of your Norton/Symantec product (that contains the firewall)? With this information we may be able to find the documentation and put a "second" pair of eyes on the configuration options that are available.

Were your computers configured for file and print sharing before or after Norton was installed?I have Norton Internet Security 2007. Norton was installled before I installed my new router. This configuration was fined with my old Netgear router, but was using a WEP encryption. Now I am using WPA2.

LaloYou MIGHT TRY this from the Symantec website.

You should be using "WPA2" if available, it provides better security than "WEP". That being said, switching from WEP to WPA2 shouldn't affect your ability to see the network computers.

You should also verify that your networked computers are in the same "workgroup".

Solve : I hate bell?

Answer»

For the past year, I've been trying to get port forwarding to work. I've been stuck with 30 kbps in utorrent because my modem is designed for retards. I just figured this out. For some UNKNOWN reason, it's not a modem, it's a router with one ethernet port. I have to forward the ports on my modem AND my router, or SET the modem to bridge mode. The problem is, my ISP (bell) just HAD to make crippled firmware which doesn't let you change any options. I've found this, but as SOON as I get to step 2 and click the link, it HESITATES for a second, and then redirects me to the crippled page, instead of the one described. I'm really pissed of at my ISP now and I REALLY WANT to get this working somehow.Never mind, I got it working I just put my ISP username and password into the PPPoE settings in my router and the modem automatically switched into bridge mode.

Solve : windows won't load up when network is plugged in?

Answer»

I have my two computers sharing a broadband connection. Main computer is Windows XP Home Edition. Other computer is Windows XP Professional. NETWORK is all hooked up. Main computer works fine. XP Pro computer will not load all the way in if network is plugged in at modem. It gets to screen which says Windows XP Professional with green line moving across bottom to show loading and then it will either stop (NEVER to go again) or the screen will go black and stay that way. If I load in windows without the network being plugged in, and plug it in after windows is done loading, then it will freeze up and have to TURN it off. If I start in safe mode with network plugged in, it will work fine...but what fun is that??? I've tried WINSOCK FIX but that didn't work. Any other ideas out there?? Or am i just gonna have to shoot it?

Solve : modemn loses internet acces when wireless uses myspace?????

Answer»

this is wierd...i have a linksys wireless G usb router modem connected to a compaq desktop(windows xp). i also have a wireless hp laptop(xp) and a wireless hp pc (vista). my connections are FINE and everything runs fine. however, when im using myspace on my wireless hp pc i get disconnected from the internet..still connect to the network but kicked off the internet..the modem lights go out and it tries to get back online but fails untill i reboot the modem. im a musician and use myspace a lot, so it is vital that this works for me. what could be wrong? the cable company says its the modem and the modem company says its the cable company and all either do is have me re-boot the modem and reconect the wires over and over to no avail. does anyone know what it could POSSIBLY be?i forgot to mention that this PROBLEM only happens when i use myspace. i can surf for hours on other sites...with ocasional interuptions but the myspace site always knocks me offline after a few minutes...and this only happens when im on either of the wireless computers. the main pc with the modem/router will run myspace WITHOUT a problem....the other two will make all 3 go offline.

Solve : Always connected??

Answer»

I have a PPPoE connection to the INTERNET, through my CenturyTel DSL modem. I used to be able to disconnect my desktop until I set up this wireless network adding a Belkin wireless G Mo. no. FSD 7230-4. Now the desktop stays connected permanently. Is this normal? BTW I'm running Vista Home PremiumCreate two batch files...

ipconfig /release name it internet_off

ipconfig /renew name it internet_on

Save them to the desktop. Now when you want to disconnect from the web just double-click the internet_off icon. To connect, click the internet_on icon.

Alan <>< Yes, if your router does not have an "automatically disconnect" option for PPPoE. I took a look in the manual (http://belkin.httpsvc.vitalstreamcdn.com/belkin_vitalstream_com/support/dl/f5d5230-english-manual.pdf) and I didn't find such an option. So, your router is always connected and hence your computer; more, it is normal behavior. Your router has a small firewall that protects your computer from network attacks. It is a "light" firewall and it is better than nothing. Ok, thanks. Just doesn't seem right THOUGH, because even though my desktop is always connected neither Vista or OneCare recognize it. Both think I'm disconnected and in the case of WLOC it's firewall is not SWITCHING to allow me the full protection of being on a public network.I supposed your network is like:
modem - cable to router - router - wireless connection to router (from other computers) and wired connection to router (from other computers).

Maybe Vista thinks it's INSIDE a LAN (and it's true ACTUALLY if your network is like I said before) and because of that it lowers the shields Your network security is assured by the router's firewall. Your Vista firewall disables fewer communications in this case (I suppose).

Hi guys...
At my mother in law's house they had INTERNET setup last year and disconected but this year they APPLIED for the connection again, so i guess they got the settings and all the stuff.

Help.............First of all, what are you seeking? Do you want general info or is there a problem?

Do you mean ISDN? Or DSL? Both come in through a phone line, but ISDN is rather uncommon in the United States for home use (in my experience, at least.)

Is this just power for the "big box" or do your in-laws have Broadband Over Powerlines (BPL)?

Solve : Compatible Wifi USB Adapters?

Answer»

Right,

Finally we recently got an Orange Livebox. I feel like i've been living in the DARK ages 8 megs now! yahoo.

Anyway, it's a wireless router and I wondered if anyone had any recommended USB Wifi Wireless Adapters? I need to find one or two to CONNECT to various laptops around the HOUSE; I'd be hugely appreciative if anyone knows of a good USB Adapter I could purchase.

Thanks.I've ALWAYS had a lot of success with Linksys Wireless USB attachments. I'm also curious if you're connecting these to laptops have you considered a PC Card instead of a USB device? I'd recommend a PC Card over a USB connection because it goes into the laptop instead of hanging out. Makes moving around and packing the laptop a lot easier.I think at the moment a USB adapter is most useful, simply because it's easier. It'll be a static laptop, pretty much, not a whole lot of moving about.

I do have another awfully annoying problem though, although i'm not sure which forum it BELONGS to. Now that my Orange Livebox is up and working, for some reason, online streaming of things like radio which uses windows media player aren't working. The error i'm getting is that i'm not connected to the internet, even though I am.

I can see why this is the case, because this Livebox automatically connects, but for some reason my PC isn't getting the message.

Solve : Signalling Speed formula?

Answer»

I am currently studying N+ and there is a formula that is confusing the living daylights out of me.

The formula is:

1bit X 10,000,000 CYCLES = 10Mbps
cycle second

How do you know what the cycle is? Does anyone know if they ask this in the comptia N+ international exam???

Please if anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciatedThe cycle is a part of a signal that repeats itself regularly. I mean that the signal is composed of those "cycles" ( I forgot the exact definition of a cycling signal). You may find the definition in a mathematics or physics book. Also, examples.
Some example here (analog cyclic signal, a SINUSOIDAL one): http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_sinuso%C3%AFdal

There are also discrete signals. Perfect discrete signals have only certain values (levels), let's say on-off, 0-1 - when we are talking about a discrete signal with only 2 values; but there are signals that could be draw LIKE stairs, up and down and so on.

It's not hard to understand, you just have to find a pupil physics or mathematics book to find what I (they in fact, in the Comptia courses) mean. Don't worry, I don't think they will ask you such details.

Solve : My ip address is....0.0.0.0??????

Answer» NEW to the site, I'm having a problem with my laptop. Its a Toshiba Satallite, Windows xp home 5.1 . I'm pretty sure its been either infected or loaded up with something not good. I think my kid probably opened up a website or something, ANYWAYS....now it will not connect to our wireless network (linksy) Through re-searching your site I've come to the conclusion that I no longer have a IP address, when I go to the ipconfig COMAND the result is IP address 0.0.0.0, Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0, and default gateway is blank. I'm not to pc savvy so my main question is....Is this an easy fix or do I take it to town? The wireless connection is not picking up an IP address.

Can you go to Control Panel-->Network connections and let us know if the wireless LAN appears in the list of network connections. If so, right-click it and choose "STATUS" - we could do with a note of any messages that might be relevant on those two tabs (e.g. a screenshot).

What makes you think the laptop is infected? What internet security software are you running? It shows that its connected with limited or no connectivity. When I try to repair the connection I get a " Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed : Renewing your IP address, For assitance, contact the person who manages your network" My wife's laptop works just fine on the same network and when I run diagnostics is says my wireless card/adapter is fine. Like I said I'm not to savvy when it comes to pc's but I know I have the Norton that came pre installed, and Drivecleaner. Drivecleaner say's " Warning! 11473 Privacy Violations Found........Thanks guys, I just loaded the recovery cd that came with my pc. I lost all my info, but it was'nt anything I can't live without. I'm now posting from this computer which I have'nt used in about 4 months. Thanks again.

Solve : Router Dropping Wired Connection?

Answer»

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless ROUTER running my home network, which I just recently swapped because of this network problem I keep having. I have Road Running internet with a Motorla SB4200 SURFboard Cable Modem, which has a wired connection to my HP Pavilion a1110n PC with Windows XP. Also I have a Vonage Phone Modem(which is about 2 1/2 years old) wired to the router. Since replacing the my original router back in December 2007 I have been having TROUBLE loosing my connection to both my computer and Vonage phone modem. The kicker is that my Road Runner Modem shows a full connection with Activity, and the while the wired connections fail, the wireless works perfectly. I have contacted Road Runner, Linksys, and Vonage about these issues and each one blamed the other for the faults. I started keeping a record of when these connections dropped and decided that exchanging my router may fix the error. However, not even 24 hours passed before I had to restart both modems and my router to regain my wired connection. I'm being driven up the wall with this problem and don't know where to go from here. HELP!Quote

It's unclear. Where exactly is the router in this picture?Pictures are worth a thousand words, and MsPaint is fun! Here is what I have set up. Sorry for the confusion.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]What happens, if you connect your computer straight to the modem? The Connection is fine if I connect the computer directly with the Road Runner modem. I tried that once while I was having a connection problem. That is when I decided to EXCHANGE the Router. What happens when you use modem----->router----->computer, but Phone Modem is disconnected?Well when the connection is working, the phone modem just GOES out. When the connection is down and I unplug it, the wired connection will STAY out until I reset everything. Since I exchanged the router I have only had the connection drop once, but I still want to get to the bottom of this. I've been thinking I should maybe up-grade the vonage modem to a newer one, do you think that would help any thing? This is not what I asked. Disconnect phone modem totally, and run modem--->router---->computer setup only.I'd be interested if at any point alternative network cables have been used.

Solve : Firewall Question?

Answer»

Recently I've been tinkering around with my home network as we've just added a third COMPUTER, and in my research on how to do it, I've come across the information that a router has a built in mechanical firewall. My question is, is the router firewall good enough for me to eliminate the other firewalls on my individual computers. Because each computer has different operating systems, I have three different firewalls operating. (Win XP - Norton 360, Win 2000 - Zone Alarm, and Win 98 - Outpost).

My router is a D-Link DI 604, and all computers link to the net through it.

That depends on what level of protection you need.
A router firewall will only provide inbound protection. I.e. protection against something trying to reach your computers from outside your network.
It will not be able to block malicious software installed on your computers that might be trying to phone home.
So if you're fairly confident no one with access to your computers or your network might accidentally INSTALL something nasty, a router firewall might be enough.

Personally I use both. The router provides a great first line of defense while my software firewall MAKES sure I have complete CONTROL over what programs are allowed to access the internet. It also protects my computer in case a computer infected with something is connected to my network. Not all my mates are computer SAVVY so you never know what might be on their computers.

Can I configure it to connect to the internet through my Nokia N73 instead? How do you plan to connect the N73 to the laptop?Through bluetooth connection.
I think that's the fastest connection?
If I'm not mistaken, it also can be connected through the USB cable of the phone.Bluetooth will probably do fine but an USB connection is a lot faster and potentially a lot more stable.

The phone should have COME with a CD containing the software you need to install in order for your laptop to GET internet connection through your phone.

Solve : Blank White Screen?

Answer»

Blank white SCREEN KEEPS popping up everytime I log onto Internet explorer, I was searching Internet one day and it took me to a Blank white screen.there was nothing else SHOWING but blank white screen. Now everytime I log onto IE that same blank page keeps popping up. The only way I know how to get rid of it is to HIT the window screen key, then I can right click on the tab on lower task bar and right click to get to close window box.

I have Windows Vista Premium, Comcast is ISP, this is a brand new puter, so I really don,t know what version of IE I have!
Would like to know if I can permanently get rid of this annoying pop-up
Thanks for your help
It's not clear. You have blank, white screen pop-up in IE, and you can surf in another window?
What Windows version?
What is "window screen key"?I have Windows Vista premium edition, and the window key I am refering to is at the bottom left side of keyboard between the ctrl key and the alt key. also have another 1 on the lower right hand side of keyboard between the alt
and the print keywhen I hit the window key it shows the task bar at bottom of screen, Then I can see the blank window tab in that tab, box is a picture of the internet icon- Blank Page-Windo...
It also shows any other pages I might have open.
But until I hit the window key I have nothing but a blank page.
It does not knock me off the internet nor does it close any other WEB pages I might have open. It just magically appears everytime I log onto the internet.it always opens up in another window. In IE, go Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, click on Reset button. Restart computer.
If it still happens, download, and install Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/. See, if it works OK.

Solve : Network Connection window how to?

Answer»
I cannot view other computer in network connection window. I would like to learn how to use this window and how to set it up. A link to a tutorial would be nice. The only THING I can see in there now is the local area connection and the Internet connection, which are both working fine. The computers will have to be in the same workgroup or domain.

What version of Windows are you using? Both computers are Windows XP.Press the Windows logo key + Pause/Break to BRING up the system properties. Click on the "Computer Name" tab. The full computer name and the workgroup are listed. Do this on both computers and make SURE they are on the same workgroup.
I did as you said EgODeath, I used the keyboard shortcut and on this PC and the system properties came right up, on the other it brought up the start up menu, but I just went though the control panel. It seems that the 2 PC's have different workgroups. Please let me know how to assign them the same workgroup without running a Wizard. Have a Satellite receiver and a router as part of the network. The Network Wizard just doesn't seem to work very well, from past experience.
Changed the name of the workgroup so that both PC's have the same workgroup name, but still cannot view both PC's in network connections.Turn off the firewall on both pc's. Can you see me now

Alan <><
Windows firewall is turned off on both PC's. I am running Comodo firewall on the host PC, the wireless phone internet is plugged directly into the host PC. The internet connection is shared. I would not want to run without a firewall. I also imagine other people use FIREWALLS yet can see other PC's on Network Connections.
I'm not familiar with Comodo firewall (I am aware of it) but for the sake of diagnosing the problem try TURNING it off.

Alan <><
Thank you ale 52 for your help. I did that and it worked.

Solve : wireless messaging?

Answer»

hi everybody
i'm sitting in the library and using WIRELESS connection to connect the internet
can i send a message to ANOTHER computer on this area?
i enabled my message service
Maybe....
depends on your operating system, their operating system, firewalls, and so on.It's not easier to go and talk with the girl? Why through "network messages"? I've been thinking about this recently, is it possible to message over IP, as opposed to something like AIM / MSN or email? All communication on the internet are messages over IP. What TURNS the messages into something meaningful is how they're encoded and decoded by the sender and receiver RESPECTIVELY. This is exactly what IMs, email CLIENTS and so on do. So in order to send and receive a message you will need software at both ends that know what to do with those messages.Quote

Solve : Problems with network driver?

Answer»

Hi,
My workmate uses Windows XP on a Dell Opliplex GX260 machine. She recently formatted her computer so, some DRIVERS went missing. We tried to reinstall the network driver - Intel(R) PRO/1000MT Network Connection. It failed to work and at Device Manager, the icon next to the driver SHOWED a red cross on the adapter. We tried to enable it and update it - at least the red cross disappeared but we couldn't get an internet connection. We tried to uninstall it but it showed the message 'Failed to uninstall' We then deleted the dell folder where the driver resides but when the com was restarted, the driver was stilll there. We have tried to reinstall the driver again & again and now there is a 10th instance of the driver(I think) bse 'Device Manager' shows Intel(R) PRO/1000MT Network Connection #10.
What is the cause of this problem? How I can get the driver to work?Make sure you are using the latest driver....
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=4275

and that you CLEAR out all the failed installs of the driver before you install this one. Than check to be sure your network card is set to 100 BaseT and not a gigabit.

You can also check over the known issues for this card.

Solve : Cannot connect to internet via dsl?

Answer»

When you SAY cannot cennect, do you MEAN you the dsl light doesn't light up? If it does, you can try going to Control Panel->Then click on network connections. Then click local AREA connection. Look over at the details panel and it should say what your IP adress is. OPEN your browser, and type in your IP adress. A page should come up saying what your ISP is. If it says internet connection is down, click connect. If it fails, type in your user ID then press connect. If that doesnt work, REBOOT your modem then click connect. If it says your ASLD connection is down, contact your ISP.

Solve : Good Networking Model?

Answer»

I will answer accordingly to your notation.

3) maybe hardware - I have to check before giving you an advice

4) It is enough. 4 Mbps is enough. I will check on their site (that you mention) to see more details.

5) Yes, it is completely optional, it will not change your situation if you upgrade. The problems will remain.

6) Absolutely optional, no need for that unless it was decided that you will change that server (hardware) this year.

7) No. It's fine as it is now.

8 ) I have to check.

9) More details.

10) Are you sure they are switches 10/10 and not 10/100? (I will also re-read your previous posts.). The 1 Gbps link is useful for connections between switches. If you don't have switches 10/100/1000 there is no problem, the 100 Mbps between switches should work just fine - of COURSE, the 1000 Mbps WOULD be faster.

11) What network cards do you use?

12) "Lan configuration" - I don't understand what are you trying to tell me.

I think your disconnection problem is caused by one of the following: router, firewall or a switch. I will check thoroughly before trying to advice you.

13) When you manage a network you are talking about many things. You have to check network performances, to "measure" network usage, to solve problems, to "guess" before the problem arises and so on.

14) Standard configuration should work just fine. Exception: you have to check the speeds that the switches auto-negotiate (between them and other switches, between them and computers). You have to be sure that everything works at 100 Mbps at least.I visited your ISP site. I found this: http://www.etisalat.co.ae/assets/docs/BusinessOne/pricecomparison.pdf .
This paper tells me that you may use "up to 4 Mbps" download bandwidth. There is no mention of minimum bandwidth guarantee. You need to know that, ask them.

Your disconnection problem could have many REASONS. I will check network components you described to me. I am asking again, do you use 10/10 switches? Are you sure? They are not 10/100 switches? 10/100 means that those switches could connect with speeds of 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps; only 10 Mbps switches are really-really old models. You don't need modular switches (6500 series are modular). You need a "basic" switch that works well. What Cisco 2960 models are used in your company?

When we are talking about advanced switches, we are talking also about knowledge to use them. This means your company need a network administrator/system engineer that should know to use those switches.

Conclusion about switches: you don't need cisco series 6500. Your actual switches (if all are 2960) are fine. Thanks for your response.

1. Yes, we are using 10/10 switches.
2. we are using Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series, Cisco ASA 5510 Series Switches with LAN
base Software
3. if our problem could be solve by using 6500 series model, our company
can hire system engineer to use those switches.
4. We have to find out our actual problem and it should be solve if company
hire system eng / administrator, if those problem could not solve by using
latest model switches 6500 and hiring system engineer what we should
do to solve the problem ? this is the query ?
5. company want concentrate on solution not expenses.

6. The current network do not have enough capability to upload the intensity of
current network traffic.

7. Internet Line does not have the capability to provide internet service to approx 70-
80 users.

8. With the help of your experiecnes comments, it is difficult for me to explain
situation in networking language. how we can manage Bandwidth to equally
distribute to each users ?
9. As I explain that we are using above hardware and software configurations
it means that we have network management problem ?
10. we could not properly manage networking i.e. we are not properly distribute
bandwidth to each users, not properly disbtribute the LAN speed ?

11. I also provide networking support to other three site offices, there are no
problem in networking. But this only one site office we have LAN disconnection
problem.
12. But different is only VPN connection. other three site office are no VPN
connection. only this site office some users have VPN connection.

Thanks and regards

With pleasure, I will try to help you if I am able.

1) I never heard about 10/10 switches. There are 10 Mbps switches (only one number), 10/100 Mbps switches (it means that the switch is able to work with 10 Mbps connections and 100 Mbps connections) and 10/100/1000 (1000=gigabyte ethernet).

2) You said that you are using Cisco Catalyst 2960 switches. What is the exact model of the switch? 2960 is
a family of switches. In your network there are only Cisco 2960 switches or there are other switches as well?

Here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6406/prod_models_comparison.html
you can see they offer many models named 2960. They differ mainly in number of ports and type of ports.
If your company uses only 2960 switches then the switches are very good, you don't need to change them. They are very good switches. Forget about the 6500 series model, you don't need yet something like those.

3)I don't think it's a switch problem. I do not know the network organization (network map), but I assume that the one who built the network placed very good switches on the network "backbone" - 1 Gbps or at least 100 Mbps.

The bandwidth is distributed equally between network users. You may "unbalance" their bandwidths. By default, I repeat, all the users have the same rights, they have the same network bandwidth available.

I am thinking this way: you have disconnection problems. They could appear because:
- a firewall is too weak to be able to filter all the packets that go through it. So, at some time it will "fill up" and get blocked.
- an important network equipment gets blocked as in previous explanation (switch on network backbone, router)
- your WAN bandwidth (between your company and ISP) is not what they say, it's not 4 Mbps but much less (less than 1 Mbps for example) and when a few VPN connections are working, your WAN bandwidth becomes much too overloaded and anything you do on the internet seems to be stopped. (When you disconnect the cable the connection is finished, some bandwidth becomes available and everything seems to work again without doing anything). Or the VPN connections "eat" more than those 4 Mbps available.

You need to do some research in that network, to check the available bandwidth, to see the firewall settings, to check if fine network equipment is placed in important places. It's a lot to talk about.
When the computers are blocked they can communicate in LAN? Can you ping from one blocked computer another computer in your LAN?

You have a network management problem with the following characteristic: it seems that you (you = your company, I don't know who) don't check your network thoroughly, you don't measure the network's performance. You have to have a network map, with everything clearly described.
When you say "network management" you say a lot of things... Maintenance, prediction, checking the network, failure saving plans. Their software is useful only if you know (or learn) to understand it, to use it. Otherwise... It sums up on the burden's complexity level.
But there is right and your management method (though I would not recommend it), "if everything works fine leave it as it is and we will see later if we have something to change/fix".1. yes, your are right, we check the switches / LAN speed it showing 10/10.
why it showing 10/10 speed ? These switches will be 10/100 , but it is
showing 10/10 LAN speed why ? we have to find reasons behind this ?

2. How can make firewall strong ? we need to upgrade with latest model firewall ?
or manually can flash / clear the packet from firewall ?

3. your experiences / observations regarding WAN bandwidth becomes much too overloaded or
VPN connection "eat" more than those 4 mbps available. you are very close to find our problem.
This may be strong reasons of LAN disconnection.
But question is how to solve / handle this ?

4. I want to know that how we can calculate / find the Bandwidth ?
our IPS saying that it is 4 mb, how we can proof that we are receiving less than 4 mb ?

5. when LAN disconnect, users unable to access web e.mail, but users can access server folders etc..
local network work fine. all computers mapping of servers working fine.

6. We are Parsons. which are providing main consultancy services to clients.

7. would you like to send information’s about the software’s?. which software is to be useful?
to maintenance / monitoring check the network failure saving plan etc....?

8. One more thing I want to ask that our users are 80, In which category this 80 users site office
network size belong,
80 users it is small network ?
80 users it is medium network ?
80 users it will belong to large network category ?

Thanks and regards

Mateen

1. If the switches are left to auto-negotiate the connexion speed, they are trying to find the biggest speed at which they can communicate with the device at the other end of the cable. IF your switches have the possibility to function at 100 Mbps you have to check the reasons for which they work at 10 Mbps (10 times slower). They could be a setting on the switches, a "noisy" environment (lot of EM radiations - radio waves, powerful electric engines NEAR the network cables, network cables running parallel and close to normal electric cables, bad network cables or other reasons), old network cards at the computers, a setting on the computers. You have to find the reason and you have to be sure that the switches are working at their highest speed possible: at least 100 Mbps. Not 10 Mbps, it's too slow, far too slow for a modern network.

2. A firewall runs on a computer (server, desktop) or it's a specialized computer with the main objective of being a firewall. The specialized computer dimensions are reduced (usually) compared to a normal computer, but this depends on its performances and other attributes. But as I said, usually they are much smaller than a normal computer/server, they don't have a display or keyboard, they have only network ports or other ports. Just like a switch.
You want to upgrade a firewall? Tough decision. You have to remake the firewall settings from the old firewall (at least). I don't know what firewall do you have. Maybe is that Cisco ASA 5510 you mention, maybe it's other equipment. Before advancing on this issue I apologize before and kindly ask you to be very careful on what are you suggesting to your superiors. You have to be sure the firewall it's the problem before any other actions.
What firewall do you use? What are it's performances? It's a computer? A normal computer with a firewall software? Or it's a specialized firewall?

3) In the contract with your ISP are mentioned all the details. How much bandwidth they guarantee to you is one of the most important mentions in that contract. I will try to find out how important as ISP is Etisalat. Someone in your company has to have those documents, the contract with ISP.
I think that the minimum bandwidth guaranteed is less than those "up to 4 Mbps". But this is only my assumption, I might be wrong.
Before checking the ISP rightness you have to check if the LAN is operating at the right standards, you have to check that the firewall is powerful enough, you have to check that the company router is not a brake to WAN connections. After everything is checked as being right, you have to check the honesty of your ISP, if they respect their agreement, if they are able to offer you what you bought.
Check the contract between your company and your ISP before taking further steps in this direction. After you find that guaranteed bandwidth we may consider what is needed to upgrade your WAN connection or to better use the one your company has now.

4) You have to add all the transfers between WAN and LAN in a particular moment, for different moments in a day. You have to be sure that there are transfers that need more than 4 Mbps (make big downloads from several servers - 20-30 servers - and get things that are not usually found on ISP CACHE servers). You may find the answer on the router or the firewall.

6) I don't know who is "Parsons".

7) No, I won't send you such things. When your network was made, someone most surely thought about how to manage that network. Or thinks now. My opinion on this matter is completely irrelevant and not founded right, basically I don't know a thing about what is working in your network, how is working etc. More than that, I don't know much (anything?) about those applications.

8 ) It depends actually on what are those 80 users doing. "Statistically", 80 users mean a medium enterprise network.

You're welcome, I hope I am helping you and not making your task more difficult.

If someone here has more experience regarding the subject, or has opinions about, please help.

Solve : "Network Cable Unplugged" issue?

Answer»

I have a "CAT5" cable connected to my Broadcom 4401 (integrated) network card to a Linksys router in another room of the house. No matter what I have messed with, the network card just doesn't SEEM to notice that the cable is in. I have a DELL Dimension 4600c with XP service pack 2 installed. I've tried using different cables, and I've tried updating the drivers for the card, but the newest ones from Dell were at least FOUR years old (I'm not sure if Broadcom has drivers for the integrated card). Any ideas?

Edit: My computer does detect the network card, and I have connected that computer to a network before, though only with DSL + router and with the computer being the "server". Recently we switched to Cable if that means anything. You tried to CONNECT to a different port on the router, also, I presume.
If you try with an alternative OS (Linux on cd LIKE Knoppix or Ubuntu) you have the same problem?

It gets stranger...
This is the IP assigned to your computer on your network 10.12.0.231.
Well I can't MAKE sense of the strange results the sites are reporting, but LETS try to ignore this for a second.
You definitely have a router present between your computer and the internet. If you don't have a dedicated router, chances are it is built in to your modem. You will need to configure the router to forward the ports you need open to your computer --> 10.12.0.231.
Take a look at this site and see if your modem/router is listed.
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

If not, post the brand name and model number and I'll see what I can find.

how would i figure out the brand name of my router.....Look at it...
It should have brand name and model number printed somewhere.Quote from: Deerpark on February 16, 2008, 05:27:58 AM

i am connected to the internet through built in LAN card.....
My ISP connected CAT 5 cable (4wires) in the LAN CARD.....

how will i SEARCH for the deicated router..... Where does the cable plugged into your lan card go? The other end should be connected to a box with some LIGHTS on it. What is the name of this box?Quote from: Deerpark on February 16, 2008, 05:50:33 AM

they plug the another end of the cable to the swith...

they have attached the switch some what 60 meters from my house at a pole....
So your computer is connected directly to a switch outside your house?
We can't help you then.
There is definitely a router between you and the internet that needs to be configured. Since you don't have ownership of said router the only thing you can do, is to ASK whoever is in charge of your internet connection to open the ports you need. (Or change to another ISP.)aren't there any other solutions...........

i am only getting a 2 minute ip address
This is about your IP address LEASING time, and it's entirely controlled by your ISP, so I'd call them again, and ask them to FIX it.I called them and they said the modem work which it does cause i have it thru a wireless router for another computer but i just don't know why my other wired computer can't conect.Did you try to connect your wired computer straight to the modem?yeah and it still dosent workMaybe ethernet card shot? Solve : Router Setup Question??

Answer»

I'm setting up my router and I was told that I needed to have my computer plugged in to the router all the time as a "HOST". When I questioned this, I was told "Well why do you think they'd give you a DISK to have it setup from your computer?" I understand that I have to have it plugged in to setup the router's configurations, but with a laptop that has the capabilities to pick-up wireless, I feel that I don't really NEED to keep it plugged in, other than the setup. Is this bogus? Or is there merit to this? Thanks.Completely bogus. Who told you that DRIVEL?
You only need to have your computer WIRED to the router while you're doing the initial setup. After that no wired connection is needed. (With the exception of the internet connection going to the router. This will have to be wired under most circumstances.)

Solve : New computer in house, Awful wireless connection.?

Answer»

Hello All!
I've always had two computers in my house running through a d-link DI-624 router. Our main pc is hooked directly in and the upstairs is wireless. As of a week ago we have a new laptop connecting wirelessly and strangely started noticing problems around the same time. Our computers will tell us that there is a network connection unplugged, or, while running a download or any LONG use program (AOL, AIM) the connection will stop momentarily causing the program/download to stop. I'm wondering if the laptop could have anything to do with this? Is there too much going on at once? Should we get wireless setup through our provider (comcast) so if it messes up we have someone to blame? Theres a chance it might not be the new computer at all. Thanks for your help and reading all of that.

Rich.Your laptop has a wireless adapter most surely. Have you set your laptop to use your wireless home network? Have you disabled it's wireless adapter?
What laptop you have?

If your WAN (between your home and ISP) connection was fine until now don't change it to wireless. An upgrade of your actual connection would be to BUY a bigger bandwidth from your ISP, not changing to wireless.
