Odd... it works fine for me.Run the network WIZARD again on both PCs. Answer the questions. TURN on file sharing. Pick the right work group name. Reset both PCs. Establish wireless connection. Look in My Network Places.Within five minutes Windows should have both computers available. Be SURE to turn on the shared folder or public folder share feature.
Yes, it works for the rest of us.Thank you for your help. I did solved the problem and it workd fine.

Solve : Cant Browse the Web?

Answer»

I formatted my hard DRIVE on my desktop and restored it to it's oringinal state, before i did so everything worked well including my internet but after I formatted and got through the intial section of XP to get the UPDATES ect. my connection to the web does not open a web page. I get the 'web page cannot be displayed diagnose your connection problems'. I have the connected icon and it SHOWS i'm connected to my router, by the way the router works properly because both my laptop and my wie's desktop connect from this router with excellent signal strength. My router is connected directly into this desktop and I changed nothing or REMOVED any connections prior to the formatting. I've gone into the device manager and the network adapter shows nothing is wrong there. I have found that no IP address PRESENT and nothing i've tried has worked to get one assigned. I've called my provider and gone through their service manager with no results. Again it does show the connected icon by i'm unable to get an actual connection to surf ....is there any help? Are you showing ANY errors in device manager? Did you install the chipset driver? Have you tried resetting both the modem and the router?

Solve : Difference in Wireless G Router vs Wireless Adaptor N?

Answer»

I have been BATTLING this issue for three years and its RUN its course.

The problem is random dropping of internet connection. I am running three computers off same wireless router, Linksys WRT54G. The IMac and Hp laptop do not have a problem.

The E-machine that has an installed Linksys Wireless Adaptor WMP300N is my problem. I have re-installed the drivers or software numerous times from the Linksys site, I have disconnected their uploaded original software since the onsite forums responding about the same issues suggested using Windows install rather then the Linksys provided install disk. Once you install this adaptor it would only operate unfailing for about a month or so then it randomly disconnects. Since the adapter must be removed each and everytime you update or re-install, it became a real hassle, it is INSIDE the computer cabinet. I have kept track of the Linksys updates for this Adaptor and there are none. I finally settled for it dumping me every three weeks or so with no warning, no error messages ...the browser's 'work offline' is checked and you must reboot.

It's now down to each and every time I am on the computer, two or three times. This is my companies computer given to me to use at home. It has all my 'stuff' on it. I really hate to have to transfer it or continually unplug the router, (unplugging the household) and hardwiring to cable.

I am afraid to buy a Linksys USB adaptor, easier to re-install. The Linksys forums are full of the apparent same problem with them. I do wish they would read their own forums and fix their stuff instead of relying on the public to de-bugg. We all have our niche and computer guruing is not mine.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it. I am even up for a recommendation on another KIND of wireless adaptor.

Well to answer your first question...

Wireless N is newer and greater than Wireless G by all standards. It uses more bands so there is less signal lost and a longer distance range. It also costs a lot more. The limit of your ISP and network will tell you if it's worth the cost or not.

Wireless G max transfer is up to 54MBps and 100 feet distance across the network.
Wireless N transfer 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s and 700 feet distance across the network.

So if you have a large network or over a large distance, shared internet, stream music, games and video or data across it wirelessly, etc, go for Wireless N. Great if all your files are on another shared computer and you just want to stream to the other computers. It is compatiable with Wireless G devices, but they will limit it on their end so it's best to update the lot, router and each wireless device connecting.

Wireless N does not however SPEED up your internet connection. The connection itself will limit the speed, since not many people have 54MBps+ internet speeds, the cost of the upgrade isn't worth it if not networking. The ISP your with deals with that end and packet settings, etc.

Having a Wireless N network card connecting to a Wireless G router is a waste too (weak signal in). It should at least be the other way around. The router should be Wireless N, then update the network cards later or at the same time.

To me it sounds LIKE your having low signal and signal lost. Moving the router away from walls, up high, and away from electric devices which MIGHT interfer might help a lot.

Solve : Problem connecting to one network wirelessly?

Answer»

Hi,

I only recently got a laptop and started dealing with wireless networks for the first time in my life, hence I'm not yet that familiar with troubleshooting them and am looking for some help from the pros!

While I was in my home country I was able to connect to my friend's wireless network which uses the 802.11n standard just fine. Now that I'm visiting a friend in England for quite a long period of time, I can not connect to the network in his home wirelessly, EVEN I can see the network, am sitting next to the router and the signal is very strong, and I am 100% sure I type the network password correctly. I can connect to the router and the Internet via a cable just fine though, which I'm very glad about, but it's a bit of a pain not being able to just move my laptop around the house when I feel like it.

My friend is able to connect to the router on his desktop and his brother on his laptop, both wirelessly without any PROBLEMS. ACCORDING to them, they just typed in the password and everything has always worked just fine. They don't know anything about their router or the settings so they can not provide me with any information.

The network uses the 802.11g standard, which should be fine as my card supports B, g and n standards. I've updated the drivers on my laptop about a week ago and even reset my ip-address yesterday just in case. And of course done the router reset by keeping it off the wall for at least a minute, starting the router first, then my laptop.

To me it seems like it's more of a problem with the router and that there could be a limiatation to how many ip-addresses are being allowed to connect to the router. I remember my friend saying he originally connected to the router on his XBOX wirelessly, but switch to a cable in some point. He can't remember when or why he started using a cable. But yea, I can certainly be wrong here!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The greater detail the better, I don't want to mess things up by changing any settings when I'm not 100% sure what I am doing.

Thanks,

MeimaiHello! try turning off your computers wireless card. reboot your computer then reliable your wireless card.

once you have completed the above then try reconnecting to your wireless router Problem fixed now. Apparently I was ment to press some buttons on the router at the same time when pressing "Connect" on the computer in order for the router to let a new computer to connect.O i have never heard of that before

Solve : I cannot draw a valid IP address.?

Answer»

I WANT to make sure I understand what you are suggesting here. Are you saying that my cable modem has "locked on" to the MAC of my secondary computer, such that it is not recognizing either my main computer or my router? If that is the case, I don't understand what you are suggesting as a fix. I do not know how to open the settings page for the cable modem to tell it to recognize my other hardware. I checked that page you linked me to for troubleshooting the modem, but that page has no useful information.

Linksys Router Docs?
We need the model number so we can search the docs and find out out how to change the MAC of the router so that it is the same as whatever PC gets into the modem.

As stated earlier, the modem does not care a bit about l your local IP address. It wants a MAC. It FELL in LOVE with your old computer and will not talk to anybody else. So you have to give the router that MAC
It has to have the MAC. Everything else is automatic once the modem sees the right MAC.

Once the router has the MAC, it knows what to do. It will hide the old PC from the modem and pretend to be the old PC. The modem will gush lots of TCP//IP and the router will do DHCP and you can have many PCs on the router.

Reset the old PC and the router will give it a local IP.

Sorry about my poor writing skills.

You have the general idea of how it works. However, getting the modem to recognize a different Mac address will not resolve the issue. The modem only wants to communicate with a single address. It does not do DHCP assignments. The router must do DHCP IP assignments. The router must have the MAC address recognized by the modem. All traffic will be directed to the router, and the router will do its job to send stuff to the individual computers based on the IP addresses it assigned to the local computers.
So either you have to dig into them router documentation and find out how to assign MAC or else try another router.
As far as I know all lLinkSys routers have this ability. What is the model number of your router?

The Router is a LinkSys NR041.

But a few days ago I bought another router and hooked it up; the problem remained.

Yes, your router does have an option to change the MAC address.
There was a firmware revision that made this a separate tab. But even if you have the earlier firmware it's still in there somewhere.

Here in this forum we are volunteers and do not get paid for this work. I personally do a lot of research on this and found that on many forums the common thought is that you have to use a MAC address. It is possible to get a connection without using a that feature, but you will not be able to share the connection with other computers and the connection is not reliable.

I'm going to give you a link to another forum where this has been directly answered in very clear terms. Both Comcast and Linksys but agree that you're supposed to clone the address of the primary computer. In this context primary computer means the one that Comcast used to set up your system.
Apparently there is some feature where the modem will pick up a new MAC address, but the documentation is not clear on how it does this. So the generally rule is you use the address that is working and go from there.
It appears that Comcast locks on to the first computer at fines during the installation process. There is some way to reset the modem, but that doesn't resolve the problem. You still have to change the MAC used by the router.
Muse over the link below and notice somebody put this question quite directly and the answer they get is simply you have to clone the MAC.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15536499

For more information just Google: LinkSys Comcast MAC cloneI appreciate all the help. I finally did today what I should have done weeks ago - I took the modem back to comcast and got another one. And now my main computer is working. I am thrilled. But, I am worried that if I try to set up my network again, the same problem will OCCUR. I still don't understand how it happened in the first place. I had used both computers for over a year without incident, and it was the secondary computer that was working and not the primary one that comcast set up. And of course this problem happened out of nowhere without anyone making any changes or doing anything.

After getting my main computer back online, I decided to try to set up my home network again, using the new cable modem but the same router as before.

It failed. With the router set up, neither computer would connect to the internet. Much to my relief, upon disconnecting the router and connecting my main computer directly, it still worked.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on with the router? It works for my local network but won't allow either computer to connect to the internet. I am still puzzled about this. The modem prefers a MAC address. Without a MC address, the connection will reset from time to time. With ta proper MAC address the connection reset will be transparent to the user.
The modem does dynamic Internet IP assignment. This is a feature of cable modem operation.
It will connect with one computer. Only one.
Just one time you must give the MAC of the PC that was last on-line to the router. From then on the router will revive the Dynamic assignment from the modem, whenever the modem wants to play tag.
The router, in turn, will assign local IP address for all your computers.
Please rared your documentation.

Solve : Internet Randomly Disables Itself For a Minute on a Specific Computer?

Answer»

Every once in a while the internet on my computer randomly is disconnected, as you can see from the information I have given I am both hardlined and wirelessly connected to the internet. The problem started while I was only hardlined, then I added the wireless adapter and it still disconnects, even though my laptop beside me works PERFECTLY fine with it's wireless connection.
I just upgraded to Windows 7 and the problem has only just started after upgrading, my laptop is also windows 7, though it is home and not ultimate.

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz 3.01GHz

2.00 RAM

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Dual NVIDA GeForce GTS 240

335GB/400GB Free

Adapter Name: Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Adapter Type: Ethernet 802.3

Connection Type: Hardlined and Wirelessthis is quite tricky and it accidentially happens during upgrade to win7.

if you upgraded to win7 and you didnt run the compactibility check, UR more likely to encounter this problem. i'd say you roll back your wireless driver or do an update to the system or uninstall then reinstall the WIFI driver.

NB: download the driver from the manufacturer website b4 you uninstall.

if this doesnt resolve the problem, then it must b the wireless properties settings.Quote from: troublesome86 on June 24, 2010, 09:33:40 AM

The thing is, I did run a compatibility check, and I am hardlined to the internet, this problem was occurring before and after I plugged in my wireless adapter, so it seems to me that my problem has nothing to do with the wireless adapter, or the HARDLINE even since the wireless connection is working perfectly fine and if the hardline failed it should switch to the wireless connection, to my knowledge anyway.

So, since the wireless connection is working, the router is working, and the hardline might be working, everything seems to be POINTING to my computer screwing up or the router blocking my computer for some reason.
The only other thing I could think of is that the hardline failed, and my wireless adapter happens to not work with Win 7.NEVERMIND Turns out the internet just fails and my laptop didn't show it got disconnected, sorry but I have no more issues.

Solve : 12 KB/S down speed on DSL?

Answer»

Hi, I just recently switched from dial-up to basic DSL. My maximum download speed is 12-14KB/S, which is not that much DIFFERENT from dial-up. I was wondering if it's normal for poor DSL plans to be this slow..because I did some research and it seems like even the crappiest plans should be getting at least 50 KB/s. I don't know if this HELPS, but my LAN speed is 100mbps and I use NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet #2 driver. I took a speed test and here are the results:

Should I be calling my ISP? I haven't yet because it's only been about 2 weeks since I've had this service.
You definitely should be calling your ISP. They should have tested the line when they did the install.

That's slower than dial up.I can see your ISP is Tri County Telephone in Lawrence, KS.
What level of service are you paying for? The speeds should be listed in your TOS Agreement.
A ping of 259ms is very slow.

http://www.tctelco.net/
http://www.tctelco.net/internet.php

Preferred Service is 768kbps
Ultimate is 1.5Mbps
Premier is 3Mbps

It's not stated, but these are downloads, not uploads.I have the preferred 768kbps service. But it has never gotten any higher speed than what the speed test shows. So can I assume that this problem is on the ISP end of things? Your ISP definitely needs to check out the problem. I just can't believe they left the install in that bad of shape.Don't assume anything. Have their help line assist you with it. I have had internet problems in the past where I assumed that it was the ISP's problem and in the end, it was my modem needing to be replaced.

So definitely have them check it out FIRST because obviously you are not getting your money's worth for the service.Quote from: Bogdan on June 24, 2010, 06:11:50 PM

...So can I assume that this problem is on the ISP end of things?
In short? Yes.Okay thanks for answering so fast.Even if it's a bad modem, with DSL it's the ISP's problem.

You can buy cable modems in Walmart and Staples, but I've never seen a DSL modem for sale. It's a small rural telephone company. I'm a bit surprised they even offer DSL service.
You SURE found SpeedTest and CH fast enough (LOL).

Solve : Poor WiFi signal??

Answer»

I recently moved into a new place with a few roommates. From day one I have had a horribly weak wifi signal. There is only one spot in the house I can connect from and I am practically sitting on the router to do it.

Everyone else in the house gets a signal just fine, except me. I have tried all over the house, and compared my signal to that of my roommates, and they connect fine. So I am GUESSING it has to do with my hardware, but I have never had a problem using any other network. My laptop is 4 MONTHS old, Toshiba Satellite A505, running Windows 7.

Does anyone have any ideas? Like maybe if there are settings I can change?Update

When I do connect to the internet, my computer tells me the signal strength is excellent, and I am getting 15mps. Still, every time I go to a webpage it is slow to load, and may not be able to pull it up at all. So my computer is acting like it has an INCREDIBLY slow connection, while at the same time, saying that it has a great connection, and often times cannot LOCATE the network at all.

INCREDIBLY frustrated. What did your provider say?
What kind of speed do you normally get?
You can Google 'speed test' and find a site that will measure your speeds.

As a START you and your roommates should all run speed test and compare results.

http://www.speedtest.net/

I don't know how your laptop measures speed, but it doesn't sound accurate.

Could be your antenna got damaged in the move, but could be a lot of other things as well. You just have to start eliminating things one by one.Speed test came back at just under 4 Mb/sQuote from: mrphy42 on June 06, 2010, 11:11:31 PM

is it a shady area yes but if you want to try and put everything into just black and white you will never get anything done. on that same note do you also fell it is illegal to make a backup of your own computer(including the software and music and ebooks) and install it again on your computer? that violates a lot of TOS of software makers, also backing up movies you have physical copies of is a violation of the TOS but its still ok to do. so is it ok to brake some but not other parts of some TOSs or are you just going to fallow the black and white it is the the TOS and it cant be done...then that means no back ups for your computer.Quote from: bloop on June 09, 2010, 12:26:54 PM

Solve : Network not setting up.?

Answer»

Sorry to be a bother here about this issue I'm having. I have set up network once with no issues prior to this, but this has got me wondering if my settings or whatever are correct.

About a month ago I had an issue with IE8 on my main computer. I fixed my problem but in the course of that action I lost all networking CONNECTIONS. I did my HOMEWORK and found what I needed to CONNECT all my computers via the internet and at the point of the IE8 issue all was working fine. Now for whatever reason I cannot set up a network. I have XP Home on all computers. I am using HughesNet Satellite broadband and everything is hardwired thru a Netgear Wireless G router.

Following instructions on what needs to be done is not a problem, but I am not a wizard in regards to LAN settings and how I should set up IE8 and cookies and such things.

Can I get a little help in setting things correctly?

I did notice when I was going thru some network set up webpages it spoke spoke about LAN settings. In
My Computer, when I click on Network Connections, right next to Local Area Connects is the number 25 in parenthesis. Can this be the problem?

If there is any more info you need just let me know.

Thanks for the help. Are your computers connected to this router through a cable or through wireless?

IE8 shouldn't have anything to do with this. You just need to find a way to connect all your computers to the router and the router will be connected to the internet. The HughesNet Broadband modem is connected to the Netgear Wireless G router and ALL the computers are HARDWIRED to the router. Like I said, I have had all my computers networked and working fine prior to this. I had an issue with IE8 on my main computer and did a REINSTALL of the whole system and since then I am not able to network. No matter how MANY websites I go to for info to set up a network, it will not set up. I have checked each computer to make sure each and everyone is tuned in as per instructions and still cannot network.

Everything is connected the same as before, nothing is different.

Solve : New Laptop and Router?

I just got the Toshiba Qosmio X505 and bought a new dual band (2.4/5ghz) wireless N Netgear WNDR3300 router. The trouble I am having is getting the laptop to recognize the N connection with dual band mode on. It doesn't find the N connection, but it finds the G connection just fine. I messed with the router settings and was able to get the router to broadcast in N only and the laptop found and connected to that, however it only was broadcasting in 2.4ghz. Is this normal or can I get it to broadcast in 5ghz on N only? Or is there some way to get the laptop to see the N connection when I have dual band mode on instead of just the G connection?Quote

To achieve maximum output a pure 802.11n 5 GHz network is recommended. The 5 GHz band has substantial capacity due to many non-overlapping radio channels and less radio interference as compared to the 2.4 GHz band.[9] An 802.11n-only network may be impractical for many users because the existing computer stock is predominantly 802.11b/g only. Replacement of incompatible WiFi cards or of entire laptop stock is necessary for older computers to operate on the network. CONSEQUENTLY, it may be more practical in the short term to operate a mixed 802.11b/g/n network until 802.11n hardware becomes more prevalent. In a mixed-mode system, it is generally best to use a dual-radio access point and place the 802.11b/g traffic on the 2.4 GHz radio and the 802.11n traffic on the 5 GHz radio.[10]

The N spec has not been fully DEPLOYED. How old is you laptop?
The laptop is only a month old. From late last year:

No mention of N at that time.

From late last year:No mention of N at that time.

first: the laptop is a month old. The spec sheet states it supports wireless N.

second: the wireless-N specification was published in October 2009. Almost a year ago.

Third: since 2004, Wireless-N Devices could be had that were certified Draft-N devices, and they will work with devices conforming to the final specification.

But that isn't relevant, since both the router and the laptop support the published standard.

Regarding the original problem, don't know what to say, really. remember that if the laptop is too far away it might connect via G instead of N as well- how are you confirming which one it connects to when you have dual band mode on?

Hey BC_Programmer,
Just become a standard was published six months ago does not mean everybody has it RIGHT.

Yes, the Toshiba has the N, but it does not let him choose which band. If you set the router to use only the 5Ghz, it will not link.

And Toshiba will not own up to it. They ignore users who complain.

He shroud exercise the warranty and make Toshiba give him real answer. But the problem with that is there is a shortage of that Toshiba right now.

At close range the 5Ghz should give better performance that the 2.4 Ghz band in a congested area where is a lot of activity.

So the either the Toshiba is not a perfect implementation of N, or maybe it is the router. One or the other is not quite perfect.
When was the router made?

Edit: Thus router has had dual band N for awhile. See Video.
http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netgear-rangemax-dual-band/4505-3319_7-32863752.html

Just discovered that the router is transmitting both G and N signals right now. Different laptop, MacBook Pro booting from Windows, sees both the G and the N signal, so I know there isn't anything wrong with the router. This laptop recognizes both G and N, just not at the same time for some reason. Of course, I would rather be connected to N, I just don't know why my laptop doesn't recognize it when G is turned on. It does not show up in Wireless Connections. Thanks for the responses.Full model number is the Toshiba X505-Q875. So basically, when I set the router to only transmit in N signal, the laptop recognizes it, but only at 2.4ghz. Same with G. Just when dual band is on, it only connects to G at 2.4ghz, never N at 5. If there is any info you need from the router setup, let me know or if there is anything I should change, let me know too. Everything has basically been left the way it came out of the box, no internal setting were really messed with.Toshiba does recognize there is a problem.
So, I have to retract what I said earlier that they ignore people.
The workaround is to disable the on board wireless and get a PC card that has the full set of features you want.
From Toshiba:

Issue:

You may experience that you may not be able to use the 5GHz band with your network card if you operate in "n" WiFi standard

Summary:

If you are maybe affected by this symptom, then your notebook is likely equipped with a WiFi cards (b/g/n).
On WiFi cards (b/g/n) which doesn't support the "a" standard there's a high risk that they will not be able to transmit data in 5GHz band.

Resolution:

The issue depends on the implementation on the WLAN card itself.

Basically, the WiFi standard "a" (5GHz) and "n" (2,4GHz / 5GHz) can transmit data in the 5GHz band.

* Means, that normally all WiFi cards (a/g/n) which supports standard "a" and "n" should be able to work in 5GHz band.
e.g. INTEL(R( Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
For more, goto http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0502VM0000R01.htm

Toshiba also says this is documented in the "n" standard. They give this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n

Several thousand posts on the internet identify this Tosiba problem. It may not limited to just Toshiba. It is a problem from the CHIP makers. Anybody who uses the non-compliant chips would have the same problem. No software fix was found.
What I would like to know is if the laptop is SUPPOSED to be able to recognize the 5ghz band. If it is supposed to then I don't understand why I should have to shell out extra money because Toshiba screwed me over. If they didn't, then whatever.Take a look and see if the card is the Intel PCI mini card.
If so, it can be replaced.

Solve : FTP Networking over 4 hard drives?

Answer»

Ok I have set up a small HOME FTP server for my friends and family to use and share things with ONE another or to just backup whatever they want, how ever most are use to SIMPLE point and click and not having to type things to change directories. The way I have it set up right now is its hosted on my windows xp laptop, with 4 externals connected to it over a usb2.0 cable. Drive "A" has all the text files and stupid small things on it and also the home directory for each user. Drive "B" has the movies that we all own on it and watch from time to time. Drive "C" has the music (same things as drive "B" we all own our own copies of it). Drive "D" has the ebooks on it, along with the photos. Now I can change directories but they are having issues, is there a way to put a link/shortcut to the other drives INSIDE their home directory?

One is running windows xp, one is running vista, and one is running win7. All are using bulletftp 2.63 build 56 as the client and the server I am using is FileZilla 0.9.34.

If I missed anything let me know and I will add to this as I will be checking it about every 30mins to an hour before I passout but will get right BACK to it when I wake back up.got it working, forgot to set up the aliases for them...simple mistake

ERROR: "Server Runtime Error" (if that helps)
ISP: Woosh Wireless (New Zealand)
Using the RJ-45 and USB (same error)

Any info would be useful

Did the SYSTEM ever connect? If so, what happened since the last time it worked (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?
Can you ping?

What happens when you direct connect to the modem?Router was working in the morning, i was posting a picture on facebook when the internet suddenly died, router is not "wireless". My laptop is virtually brand new (bought it from my parents house over the weekend) and the same thing happens. The laptop says "limited or no connectivity" but shows local access.

What happens when you direct connect to the modem?

Did the system ever connect? - Yes

What happened since the last time it worked - It's coming up with a webpage displaying "Server Runtime Error". no new HW, SW, VIRUS?.

Can you ping: Haven't tried, but I can type in CMD "ipconfig /all"

Are there other systems in the house? - Yes there are 3 computers currently in the house. 2/3 have tried to connect to the internet

If so, do they get a signal? - Signal? it's not a wireless connection?

What happens when you direct connect to the modem? - The "Server runtime Error" appears

Is that information sufficient?Try to ping, but it simply SOUNDS as though you are not getting service. Have you checked with your ISP?Quote from: Merlyn on June 08, 2010, 03:25:33 PM

I meant do they get service - can they ping? Can they connect to the internet?Might be our ISP?

BUT! It's happened before and we seemed to resolve the problem.

All attempts have failed.

MerlynYou refuse to ping so there's no way to know if you are getting service.in the "routers address" (Default Gateway IP) it says "connection to exchange : Connected (under that) - Connection to internet - connecting. (was connected before i tried to reset the router =\) i am not at home to try the "ping" but i will post back tomorrow about the "ping status". i am using the internet at my university to post.okay so last night i got the router back to the "connected" stage, but the "server runtime error" still appears.

I'll tell you that in my opinion this would be impossible because 2 network cards would create 2 IPs on the network and you would need custom firmware on your router to be able to send through one IP and recieve to the other.

Solve : Dilemma...ADSL vs Fiber Optic?

Answer»

I have ADSL, up to now my only choice in this city in Thailand - not Bangkok) and I pay about $40/month for an advertised 5mb/ps download , but in ACTUALITY, get 2.8 mb/ps. I have a chance to get a fiber optic connection for half that amount - 4mb/ps, but in actuality,I get 2.7mb/ps. I can also upgrade with fiber optic to 10mb/ps with an actual speed of 8.87mb/ps for $6 more/month.
Will the difference in transmissions make a difference in the quality, smoothness of video and audio? For example, with my ADSL, I connect to Slingbox with a not-very-sharp picture and a staccato sound stream. Will upgrading to 10mb/ps make a noticeable difference?

My PC specs:
Toshiba Satellite L505D, with Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD Athlon II Dual Core M300, 3GB Ram, 320 HDD
Anything over 2Mbps should give very good quality. You may have some other issue that is causing the roughness you mention.IF you are USING Slingbox, the extra speed should help. I'm guessing the Slingbox is in a different country, and there is no telling how many connection it goes through before getting to you.

I'd check your speed often just in case it's a physical PROBLEM with your ISP.

Solve : DSLAM not leasing IP Address for my Belkin router!?

Answer»

I have a problem with my internet connection. I am with o2 Broadband and i connect using DYNAMIC Bridge. The SETTINGS that i entered into my belkin router were :-

Multiplexing method: LLC-Based

VCI (Virtual Circuit Identifier): 101

VPI (Virtual Path Finder): 0

Username: leave blank

Password: leave blank

DNS servers: choose to get these dynamically from the Internet provider

NAT: enable

I then connected my belkin F5D7634 Version 2 Firmware 2.00.02 to the dsl line and entered them settings above. I understand that i need to let my "MAC Lease" expire. I left my router on with the dsl line connect for over 24 hours and the router still will not connect to the internet. I can still connect with the router that was supplied to me by my ISP.

Also i have tried this on other telephone sockets in my HOUSE but i got the same result. Every time i try and contact my ISP they refuse to help me on 3rd party routers.

My question is
-: Is there a problem with my belkin router?
-: Is there a problem with my ISP's remote hardware? (o2 UK)

Solve : Network Problems?

Answer»

Hi All

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate which is connected to the internet via it's internal wireless card and it works fine.

I also have a Gateway desktop which is running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I want to network the two so that I can access the internet from the Gateway using the laptop's wireless card.

I connected the two with a cross-over cable and I can see the laptop and share some of the folders but the Gateway will not connect to the internet.

What do I need to do to get on the internet from the Gateway?

Thanks in advance

OK, I tried this and it doesn't work.

My laptop actually connects to a verizon fiber optic modem via the built in wireless card. The modem is connected to another desktop which I do have any access to.

I didn't think this would matter as the laptop connects without any problem. I just want to connect to the internet from the desktop without having to run an ethernet cable all the way to the modem.

It seems to me there should be a way of doing this but I cant find out how to do it.
Right, ok...so you've GOT the desktop (D) and the laptop (L) connected via a crossover cable, and sharing works fine on those, right?

Can you run ipconfig in a command prompt on D and post the results?

You should be able to use ICS on the laptop...I'm not sure if it has undergone a name change in Win7, but this should be completely possible.

I vaugly remember doing something similar with my XBOX 360 and my Win7 laptop, but I used a switch & patch cables (effectively the same setup). I remember using my laptop to "Bridge" the two connections.

There is an entry on this site (http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-networking/2847-how-do-i-make-network-bridge.html) that explains how to do that.

It might take some slightly more advanced networking skills, but I'll try to talk you though it.Quote from: Sid on June 04, 2010, 05:36:30 AM

Solve : Using 2 routers.?

Answer»

I have an Orange Livebox from the ISP that I have to use for their free VOIP calls and have no way around it. Major problem is that the router they give is absolutely horrendous. It drops both wired and wireless connections regularly, and lacks many features that I'd consider standard.

I want to use another router for my internet uses, but have to keep this one they gave me for those calls. Is there any way to do such a thing? Everyone I've spoken to so far has talked about WAP's and bridging the 2 routers, but that frankly doesn't really help all that much because I want to avoid their router altogether given the PROBLEMS that it causes.

Any input is welcomed well if you pay for their service you should be able to get your own device... but i cant help past that The problem is you can't. If I read correctly, they check your MAC address and compare it with the SERIAL number on the rouer they've given you. If it doesn't match, you can't use their VoIP service.Having the 2 routers won't help u much in this CASE. If I am reading and understand the post correctly. U need their router to ACCESS the internet and VoIP. The router A (LETS say theirs) is the gateway to the Internet. By adding another router won't do any good. U still have to make a connection from router B to Router A which is the gateway. U might be able to spoof router B MAC address . Follow this links for a better explanation, but be forewarn u do this at your own risk.

Is it cable, DSL or satellite?Quote from: raphael.waller on June 15, 2010, 08:45:17 AM

Hello. I am running Windows 7. I am hardwire connected to a SWITCH. I've had brief problems with this computer connection after installing windows updates before, but they were usually SOLVED after a simple command prompt ipconfig release and ipconfig renew. This morning I was on my internet, browsing etc as usual. I turned off my computer before class and went on my merry way. After turning on my computer a bit ago, I am connected to the internet (according to the logo in the lower right), but upon CLICKING on firefox or IE, I receive a message saying, "The Broadband Link is CURRENTLY Not Available". I haven't recently installed any norton trials etc (I read those can cause problems such as this), and I didn't authorize any windows updates before turning off my computer either. I am running MicroSoft Security Essentials if that helps at all. Also, two other laptops are hardwired on my network and are working just fine. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Solve : Router installation without a cd?

Hey guys,

I've hooked up a router before, but I just purchased a refurb netgear wpn824 v3 from newegg and it didn't come with a cd or with installation instructions. It did include a PIECE of paper to tell me to check out netgear.com, which promptly told me to use the cd.

I'm RUNNING vista with comcast cable. I've hooked up routers before with cd's, but never without. Any tips would be great, whether it is a link or an explanation.

Thanks a lot guys. My linksys router I used to use, I just plugged in the cables and the power and the modem to it and it ran just fine. No CD required.

You do know how to install it? Unless you need some specific drivers to get the device running, you just CONNECT your network cables properly. WAN to modem, then network cable from network card on your computer to any OPEN LAN PORT on the router??? I assume you're just trying to use your cable internet with your router you have....I agree - you should not need anything - just plug & play.http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2630

Solve : Tough Networking Question?

Answer»

Hi all,

I am trying to re-configure my entire home network. My weapons of choice are as follows:

Comcast's Cisco Modem
Linksys E3000 Router
Linksys WRT160n Router
Linksys WRT54G Router
Sony Playstation 3
Dell (New) Studio XPS 15 Laptop (WIN 7)
IBM (10 years old) Desktop (WIN XP)
Acer (3 years old) Desktop (WIN 7)
HP (6 years old) Laptop (WIN XP)

Here are my questions:

Is it possible to hook all three routers up to the one modem (basement, first floor, second floor). Without losing their perks? (By perks, I MEAN the E3000 allows REMOTE backups to an external HDD and guest accounts).
Are there benefits to doing this?
Will it increase my range?
Should I set the n-routers to specifically n rather than mixed signals, and the same for g?
The E3000 offers a faster 5GHz signal while the other 2 routers offer 2.4GHz signals, how will this come into effect?
Ideally, the XPS and PS3 will be on the middle level so wouldn't that be the best place for the E3000?
Does the PS3 have an n wireless built into it or is it g (old, fat model)?
I am running multiple OS's on multiple platforms as well as a wireless printer, will it be difficult to network them all together in the end with 3 different router connections?
What are your suggestions and what would you do if you were facing this predicament?

My last point is that my connection has (prior to this) solely relied on a one-router, one access point connection prior to this. I have never used the E3000 before this as it is brand new and I haven't hooked it up yet, I was using the WRT160n and it dropped out all the time. I figured by setting up a router on each level of the home it would increase the range, but i'm not sure if they will take away from one another or if it will actually be beneficial.

Sorry for all the questions and all the text, I would appreciate any help whatsoever. I'm gonna try to do this on my own so the more I know the better. Thanks for all of your help!!modems usually only have one LAN port.I can't help but feel that three wireless routers in a single family home is not only overkill, but asking for problems. As BC said, most modems only have one LAN output so that's your first problem. I've cascaded hardwired routers, but never cascaded wireless routers.

If you are having reception problems, I THINK it would be better to use one router and external antennas to boost the range.Lots of questions. Rather than consider each item one by one, I'm just going to make some general observations. And I'm going to recommend you look over material is available on the Cisco website. Even if you choose equipment from other manufacturers, the Cisco website has some tools and tutorials that I personally think are very valuable for everyone.
Now about routers, modems and hubs. Yes, as BC programmer as mentioned a plane simple modem just as one ethernet port.
The feature that is known as DHCP is often done by the modem. Routers that do not have modems almost always have one port that is labeled WAN and that is where you connect your modem with a standard ethernet category five cable. You'll need to read over carefully the information in your wireless router documentation.
Now as to hooking routers together, one reason for doing this is to increase the range of the ethernet cable. The cable works well out to about 300 feet and then you have a dangerous picking up noise due to signal loss, cross talk or interference and other such things that happen when you have long cables. If you are satisfied with just only 100 megabit ethernet you should have no problem.
As for the wireless range, it is difficult to predict the effective range of your wireless. It is possible to get to wireless routers to work together in some fashion but it's just a lot of hassle to get the way it's supposed to. It's usually easier to set up one wireless at one end of your facility and other wireless at the other end of your facility and have them tied together with cable rather than trying to make one a repeater for the other wireless. Of course, that is a personal opinion. I just get tired of trying to go through the documentation and figure out what works and what don't work and why.
Bear in mind that when you have one router after router there is the question of the DHCP and the use of the WA N Port. As far as I know you can get routers made by different manufacturers to work together. It works for me. But it doesn't always make a lot of sense
some manufacturers use a different subnet assignment. I don't even know how to explain this in simple terms but I'll give it a try. Let's say that a router made by one manufacturer expects its local IP address to be192.168.0.1 manufacturer expects its local IP address to be192.168.1.1 and you would think because they are TWO separate addresses they would work fine together. That's wrong! They are not inside the same subnet. To be inside the same subnet all the digits of the opt let's must be the same except for the last. The last octet is the assignments for the subnet. Maybe that's not technically correct, but that's the practical working application. You also need to know exactly what addresses are used by the DHCP device for assignment within that range. Typically it might be all the addresses in the range of 100 to 150 in the last octet.
Now if you're an IT expert and what I said sounds like a bunch of rubbish, you're right, it does sound like a bunch of rubbish. But this is sort of information you'll get if you search around on all the forums you can find this is the kind of answers you will get when you try to run to routers together on the same network.
Oh, I forgot to mention, you need to know the local IP used by the modem. Quite often it is192.168.1.254 but there is no guarantee that it will use that assignment.
If you go to the Cisco site you'll see they offer some free and trial programs to help you sort things out with your local area network using wireless routers. These programs rely heavily upon the MAC of each device in the system. That way it does not depend upon the local IP address assignments. Is worthwhile using the freebie program called network Magic available from Cisco Systems. Go to their website and get a free download. The also have a similar program just for use on wireless systems.
Pardon me for not organizing this in a clear manner. I am a lousy writer. Hope this is how some help you.
And pardon me for misspelling Ethernet.
Oh, you don't need the N feature for a home system. Your choice.

Um mm... more misspend words. Octet means a number in the range of 0 to 255 but the frist Octlet is never 0. I think.
Thank you so much to all three of you. I appreciate all of the feedback. As you can imagine I had these questions up on 3 other forums (bleepingcomputer, techguy, techspot) and I seem to be getting overlapping answers in some cases, which is a good thing. From what I have gaged so far, if I want to daisy chain the 3 routers together, my best bet is to go wired. I am aware that the modem on has one LAN port. As of right now, I set up the E3000 to the modem and am using that as my primary router. From what I have been told, I can use two of the ports in the back of that (as well as a couple cat5s) and string the other two routers to the top and bottom floors. Then I am told that I have to do something with DHCP as well as change a few numbers on the IP addresses (192.168.1.1 / 192.168.1.2 / 192.168.1.3) . With all three connected on a wire connection, I am told my range will increase. RThompson, your external antenna idea might be the best bet for me instead of over-complicating matters. For now I am working on repairing an old computer, and a few other things so I am going to wait on this networking thing. When I do move forward with it, I am going to try to daisy chain them and see if there are any benefits, otherwise that's about it. Thanks again for all your help!

Solve : ISPs Struggling to cope with Bandwith during World Cup Games?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
we're based in the UK and have had numerous PEOPLE call us during world cup match time with extremely poor internet connection speeds.

These have been lines that normally run at about 8Mb/s running during match time at 0.3Mb/s

I would LIKE to know if anyone else in the UK or Worldwide is suffering the same symptons which i assume is down to mass streaming of the 2010 world cup games.

In the UK BBC seem to be sending all there match streams over the internet on port 80 making them virtually impossible for Admins to block.

Do you know who exactly is doing the streaming? The streaming ISSUE is not with us internally but seemingly the ISPs excuse for the lack of internet speeds.

The comment about streaming is more generalised to all the people at the workplace streaming media from the BBc and ITV.

There are numerous threads elswhere on the issue like this.

But save from outright BLOCKING all BBC websites or Flash there seems to be no way of just blocking the streamsCan you block Flash on specific websites, namely BBC.co.uk and the ITV site? From reading elsewhere it would seem that you can only block flash 100% everywhere not specific to certain sites/domainsIf these are residential people who connect directly to their ISPs, there's nothing you can do. This is an issue the ISP would have to resolve if it is indeed a matter of not enough bandwidth to go around because too many people are watching streams and sucking up bandwidth. It's not unheard of that an ISP have slowdowns during peak usage times.

If it's something more local, say like a company or school network, than they should block the websites that are streaming this content and bogging down their networks until the World Cup is over with. That, and fire some lazy employees who should be working and not watching football (soccer).Quote from: quaxo on June 17, 2010, 02:37:19 AM

We have spoken to a couple of ISPs and we are being told that it's a bandwith issue as they are running at 95-100% capacity on their Nodes in the Wolverhampton Exchange (UK) and therefore there is nothing they intend on doing about it.

Just frustrates me that the BBC have failed to supply information to techies on how they can easily block their streaming content, after all companies that watch TV have to pay their LICENSE fees tooo...

Solve : Problem connecting to the internet with multiple consoles?

Answer»

This is something that started happening fairly recently. I really don't know what to do from here so I'm going to explain what is happening and please let me know what other information you need. My husband and I each have our own Xbox 360s, a PS3 and this COMPUTER connected to a router and a modem with Time Warner Cable internet. We were originally using a Buffalo wireless router and for a couple of months we had no problems with the connection. Suddenly we started having a problem with connecting to Xbox Live at the same time. Usually how it would happen is one 360 would already be online and when we tried to TURN on the other one it would say that the connection was unavailable. No error message or anything, it just wouldn't recognize that the connection was active. We thought maybe it was a problem with xbox live but this started happening with the PS3 also, however the computer seems to be immune to this problem. The only way to fix it is that when it happens we need to unplug the modem and router then plug the modem back in, let it boot up and plug the router in. After that it will work fine. Our Buffalo router messed up so we bought a Netgear 5-port GIGABIT Ethernet Switch(GS605), but we continued to experience the same problem. I've called time warner and they just keep saying nothing is wrong with the connection and rebooting the connection on their end which ALWAYS fixes the problem. The problem can be fixed, but it seems like there is no way to keep it from happening again. I really have no idea what to do from here. Please please please let me know what other information you need.Quote

That may be the most piratical solution that you will get.
This is what the tech support people tell the users.

What is the brand and model of the modem?
Unless you want to replace the modem, there may be nothing you can do.
But if you replace the modem the new modem will have to be activated.
it was a modem that was given to me by Time Warner.

It just happened to the computer too. I'm now SUSPECTING it may be my network settings in the computer. We switched to a different provider for a while and were having trouble with it. The tech support guy walked me through some settings in the Network and Sharing center.

What kind of settings would be best for my kind of connection?

Solve : A toughie - DSL isn't working like it should?

Answer»

I just got a new internet service (on account of moving across the country) through AT&T DSL. Ever since I set it up (~2 weeks) it's been GOING really.... really slow. Like, 200kbps down, when I should be getting 1.5Mbps minimum. And my ping is usually around half a second.

After numerous phone calls with AT&T speaking with technicians of varying LEVELS of English fluency, they sent out a technician to my apartment complex. The line and everything checks out - he even plugged his laptop into my modem and he got decent speeds. Plug my laptop back in, and the speed goes back down.

The TRICKY part is, my speed is fine with any other internet provider I've had before (both wireless and through ethernet). I got a wireless router to double-check, and my speeds were the same on the router as they are through ethernet. But they're fine when I go to a wifi hotspot downtown. So it almost certainly isn't a hardware problem (modem works, cables work, network card and wireless cards work). But I can't for the life of me figure out what is the problem. AT&T has given up on HELPING me, and I'd rather not switch providers if I don't have to (there's only one other choice of provider, and I hear they suck).

I feel like I've tried everything obvious by now: updating drivers, reinstalling the modem, reinstalling ethernet and wireless card drivers... anything else? I'd say you should try switching your DNS. Try the free Google Public DNS. It could be that tyou configured your laptop to an old DNS of some old ISP and now your pages can't load because that DNS isn't RESPONDING to requests made from your new ISP or it's being laggy or something. Even if your DNS is set to automatic, it could still be a problem; I've been to so many public hotspots where you can't get a decent connection with their default DNS.

Just try OpenDNS or Google's Public DNS and see if it helps. You can change it on your router or on your computer in the networking and sharing center in the group called manage network connections.

Solve : Can I name my modem??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for looking at my question.

I have recently upgraded my modem to a Dlink, DVA-G3670B.

Does anyone know if I can actually name my modem instead of having the generic title displayed?

My other dlink modem was quite easy to rename, but this one is a little more complex.

I have searched through the menu from the website, the documents in the users guide and in the administration, setup and configurations area, but just haven't found the answer to my question anywhere yet.

Can someone guide me on this please?

Thank you ImnoGuru.Did you mean you want to rename the Station Identification?
So then, other people in your neighbor d would see
ImnoGuru
Instead of
D-Link
When they scan for wireless hot spots.

Look for the SSID box and you should be able to imput the name you want it to be Yes Geek-9pm, thats what I did to my other modem. REALLY so I could tell if I was logging on to my own modem actually.( but so that others will see my modem name too).

UNSCSpartan3 yep thats what I want to find SSID. I LOOKED through the user manual but there is no mention of it there ( eg how to rename the SSID).
Maybe I have to look a lot deeper at it then. The DVA-G3670B is a modem/router combo, according to http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=h_view&model_id=817. Doesn't your ISP provide a modem? If so, why did you buy a modem? Why not just buy a router to use with the modem provided by your ISP? did you go to the configeration page for the isp's modem??? or is it your modem that you are trying to rename the ssid for?I think ImnoGuru simply wants to be able to change the WAP ID name (the SSID thing).

@ImnoGuru, you may want to check out the user manual for your device. Hopefully it answers your question.Hi and thanks for the replies.
I just got back from my trip to Neptune. I'm SORRY I haven't had the opportunity to get back to my responses to my question.

I just had a quick look.

Yes 2x3i5x, that's what I want to do.

I want to name it "ImnoGuru's Modem" instead of DVA-G3670B.
And for the other part of your reply, I have downloaded the user manual but I just dont know what it is I'm looking for?
SSID may mean something but to me it means SSID. Thats because ImnoGuru.... hehehe. (sorry us old buggers gotta have a laugh once in a while.)

Thanks soybean, for the input too.

Doesn't your ISP provide a modem? If so, why did you buy a modem?
Why not just buy a router to use with the modem provided by your ISP?

See, thats the sort of thinking and QUESTIONS you might ask. Yes my ISP does and did provide a modem. Then I upgraded my account so that I can use the internet for phone calls via V.O.I.P. (Much cheaper for my calls). I used, http://bc.whirlpool.net.au to upgrade my account to a better plan.

So I bought a NEW modem/router? (the DVA xxxx) because it has 4 ports for cable connections and wireless connections for my laptops. Plus it has 2 phone line outputs for the V.O.I.P. , also it was cheaper buying it outside of the ISP company and their modem was not as good as this one.
I paid an extra $26.00 above what the ISP wanted for their crappy 1 cable V.O.I.P. and not wireless, for this one, and got all these other features added in. Cable connections X 4, wireless and V.O.I.P.

Lots of reading for me and the manual then. Thanks again. I'm looking for the SSID then and it should be in the configuration area of the manual.

Thanks heaps everyone. ImnoGuru.

Solve : Cannot connect to a router. Stuck at "Validating Identitiy"?

Answer»

When I try to connect to a specific PASSWORD protected router with a specific computer it will not work PROPERLY. When I try to connect to the router(remember it's password protected) it attempts to connect, finds the connection, then SAYS "Validating Identity, Firewalled" and stops at that process. It never asks for the password. The computer can connect to other WIRELESS connections and the router works with other computers. Nothing ABNORMAL is happening during the connection attempt.

I am attempting to fix this problem for a family member, and it will be a little harder then usual to get information, so if you need any more information please make a list.

OS: Windows XPCheck the setting for the NIC and the router. Make sure you are typing the password correctly.
make sure you are within range of the AP, Mic drivers installed, umm. yeah try it then. i have never had this problem before, I always make sure that the settings are correct of both sides.

Solve : Second Wifi Network?

So this might be a dumb question...sorry in advance. Would I be able to UTILIZE a second wireless router and create my own WEP network? This scenario would be coming from my cable MODEM which is connected to my first wifi router. Is it possible to take a second router and create a whole different wifi network without using the cable modem?

I would appreciate clarification because I am terrible with this stuff.

CheersIn short what u are asking is to created a intranet network. FOLLOW this link:
http://performit.co.uk/network/network.php
Very basic explanation and other links. correct me if im wrong, but i think the linksys wrt110 can do this all wirelessly. like it can amplify a weaksignal and basically forward it to make a new CONNECTION... its like the router currently connected to the modem is the liksys router's own wireless modem... i know i put it in a way hard to UNDERSTAND..

i need to convert an RJ11 to RJ45 using a CAT5 Cable ... Does anyone know how this can be DONE?Can't be done. Different number or wires, totally different configuration.

What are you trying to do?I have an old laptop that has only an RJ11 port. No LAN port. I'm using a wireless adapter for internet at home. However at school, I can only use a wired connection for Ethernet port -RJ45. I was told that it is POSSIBLE to convert the RJ11 port to a RJ45 so that i can get to use the LAN port (rj45) at school.

Ck out this forum link, there is a PIC of the cable

A dial-up modem is not an ADSL modem; the only thing in common is the RJ-11 connector.

You can put an RJ-11 plug into an RJ-45 receptacle, but you cannot put an RJ-45 plug into an RJ-11 receptacle. RJ-45 is wider than the RJ-11. RJ-11 is 4-pins, RJ-45 is 8-pins.
Technically, RJ-11 is often used incorrectly to describe other sizes.
Study this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_jack

The electronics behind the RJ11 on your laptop do not support ethernet. If you somehow do connect it with a cable, you will damage the computer or the router or modem.

Solve : Limewire must die (Blocking it on a wgr614v6)?

Answer»

After pulling my hair out for months trying to figure out why my internet was wonky, I discovered that my unscrupulous roommates are constantly downloading 200+ gigabytes of pirated material off of limewire at any given time. This is a cause to be lamented, as I cannot even browse the internet very WELL when they are pirating.

Despite requesting that they not use it, or at least use it when nobody is awake/around, the problem persists. The time has come to end it, once and for all.

Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. I TRIED blocking the limewire/gnutella ports, but they AUTOMATICALLY search for an open port when this happens. As a result, none of my port closing has been effective. I am curious what other options are out there to stop limewire.

Helpful Facts:

* I am in control of the wgr614v6 router, so I can make any changes there that I need.
* I have no 3rd party firewall software.
*The most complicated thing I have pulled off computer wise is flashing my bios, so I am pretty confident I can due even intricate things given PROPER instruction.

Thanks in advance for your help! Why not to uninstall limewire, put a password on your computer, or...many options...There are four of us in the apartment, and each one of us has our own separate computer. I do not have limewire on my computer. The challenge it is blocking it on theirs when I only have access to the modem and router. If it's your router, and you pay for the service, if you look at your router manual: http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/wgr614v6_ref_man_20Apr05.pdf, you have couple of options (chapter 4-4, and 4-5): you can either block selected/range of ports used by Limewire, or under “Filter Services For”, you can block the SPECIFIED service for a single computer, a range of computers (having consecutive IP addresses), or all computers on your network.

Solve : Setting up wireless connection?

Answer»

I am planning on buying a wireless router with 5 ports, I have a modem and a broadband D-Link, the D-Link is FULL, and I got a laptop, which need a connection, so I am buying a wireless router, but I am not sure how to connect it. I am also
buying a network switch. I don't KNOW how to connect all the stuff. So the modem goes into the broadband D-Link and
then the network switch then into the wireless router right ? anyone know which port it goes to? Why the switch? Why did you buy it? Why not just replace your older router with the new, wireless one? That's all that's needed here.but I don't want to, my bro is mad at me, and plus it is going to be very expensive, the wireless router and network switch total is = $60, if I buy a wireless router with many ports it would cost alot,In your original POST, you clearly indicated you were buying or have BOUGHT a wireless router:

So, let's get this clear. Do have a wireless router or not? If not, why the comments in your original post? never mind, you don't know it anyway.Uh ..., you don't know whether I know "it" or not. You still haven't clarified some facts.

My impression is you had a wired, 4-port router before getting the laptop. Now, with the laptop, which you want to connect via wireless connection, requires a wireless router. But, a wireless router with 4 wired ports can be obtained for $60 or less. That would be sufficient for 4 wired computers and a wireless laptop. So, again:

Tommy, you have a switch or do you intend to buy one?
You are sure you will buy a wireless router? If you will connect the laptop through a network CABLE a switch will be enough to "enhance" your home network (to give you n-2 more ports to connect cables; n = number of ports on the switch).Aw thanksAnd the answer is...?

Solve : Connected but not accessible?

Answer»

Last night my connection to the internet failed. Went through the STEPS I knew to reaccess and was successful. The KICKER is that I cannot send and receive email nor access any web sites.

Subscriber to Comcast cable.
Landlord has ONE computer hardwired with an attached router and modem.
I am connected with a PlugLink directly into my Dell Dimension PC.
Use Windows XP, and Microsoft Outlook.
MacAffee Antivirus.

The PC is receiving data. Connection is fine.
Went through all checks with Comcast guy (pretty much what I found in the Q&A area on this site).
Network card appears to be working (light is lit).
Don't think is cable either and this is why: I pulled out my Laptop which gained access to the internet from the same signal from the Landlord's router. BUT I still could not send or receive email or access a webpage from my laptop. So I have the same conditions with both the PC and Laptop.

Saw the prior answer about DNS settings. While I believe all settings have been verified I will try this too when back at the PC.

Comcast uses Dynamic assignment of IP addresses. The IP address I verified with Comcast (beginning with 169) seemed to be a problem.

When through setup step by step with Comcast guy, everything appeared OK.

Repair utility tried MULTIPLE times and failed.

Uninstalled and reinstalled network card.

No problems identified in Device Manager.

I am even system restored both machines to prior dates when everything was working.

I am receiving email through my Blackberry, which is passed through by my PC!

What gives with my PC and Laptop?

Let me REITERATE that both machines worked fine until last night.

While it is my notion that the PC is not accepting the signal from Comcast's signal how can this happen to both machines?

Of course, I don't know what to do with either.

One solution to this problem call comcast and register the LAN MAC address of your laptop. because the MAC address of you PC is register to the comcast server so when you connect the PC to the modem its ONLINE and when plug in the laptop it won't go online. Observe if you connect the PC to the modem its getting an IP address and when you plugin the notebook its getting an IP address of 169.254.x.x.

Solve : wireless is connected, but can't get onto internet?

Answer»

Hello,

My HOME has a dsl connection. The connection is then hooked up to a 'LINKSYS wireless-G broadband router 2.4GHz'. One computer upstairs is hardwired into the router and recieves the connection perfectly. I have one laptop with windows vista and one desktop computer with XP downstairs. I started with the laptop, I received the wireless signal with no PROBLEMS. The connection says, "Local only" I could not get onto the internet. It was connecting onto the router but would not actually CONNECT to the net. I hardwired the laptop into the router, made a new broadband connection and received the internet. I unplugged the ethernet cable and was still connected to the internet. From now on, I can connect to the broadband connection wireless.

Now the problems lies with my desktop downstairs. I bought a 'D-link wireless G USB 2.0 adapter' and installed it. Much like the laptop, I received the wireless signal right away. But, the connection couldn't connect to internet. I brought it upstairs, hardwire connected, made a broadband connection, and it worked. I unplugged the ethernet cable and still worked. Even logged off and back on and I was connected to the wireless internet. As soon as I unplugged it, brought it downstairs, and hooked it up again nothing changed from the start. The wireless was connected but not with the internet, and when I tried to connect using broadband connection ( Much like the laptop, which stills works) it tells me that it the cable is unplugged. I brought the system upstairs again to TRY to connect, than unplugged the cable but this time as soon as I unplugged the ethernet cable, the connection was lost.

ThanksCheck the IP address of computer when its in wireless connection.

Solve : SLOW Performance?

Answer»

Our existing network is set up like this:

6 PCS all running Windows XP Home SP2 and Office 2003 Professional
Cable Modem
|
4 Port Switch
|
24 Port Switch (DLink) (not sure why)
| | | |
2 Computers + 2 VOIP Phones + Network HDD (Buffalo) + 16 Port Switch
|
3 Computers + 3 VOIP Phones + 8 Port Switch (Belkin)
|
1 Computer + 1 VOIP Phone

All of this "stuff" is connected via CAT 5 or CAT 5e cable between two small rooms. The wires were run over doors and around corners. Nothing fancy.

All of the computers are connected through the Polycomm VOIP phones. The phones are then connected to a switch.

All of the computers are set up in a Workgroup.

On the Buffalo Link Station I have a small Access program installed. A toolbar full of shortcuts to the different components of the program is installed on every computer.

Recently something changed on our system and I'm not sure where to start looking.
The computers nearest to the cable modem (also the least used) run the Access well.
The further "away" from the first switch the computers are the worse they run the Access program. The 3 computers on the Netgear switch (3rd switch in line) can take over 2 minutes to load the program. It's nearly impossible to run it.
Just a week ago I didn't have any problem running the program from any of the computers. The installation hasn't changed.
Also, the Access program runs well when installed locally on every one of the computers.

So I'm pretty sure that I have a network related issue. I don't anticipate changing my equipment but if I were to consider getting a server would XP Home computers work with Windows 2003 SBS?

Are there "tweaks" I can apply to Windows XP Home to improve the network PERFORMANCE in addition to making whatever adjustments are needed to fix my problem??

Thanks for the help and ideas. So far all I can come up with is to remove one or two of the switches but seeing as they have always been there I don't know if that's the right plan.

PoSo, the main issue here is the slow response when trying to launch Microsoft Access via the network, right? Otherwise, is the network working normal? Yes, Access is the issue. I have a little bit more info since I first posted:

1. I deleted the registry keys related an issue I read about where computers on a network check other computers on the network (Scheduled Tasks/Printing) before connecting - this didn't appear to make a difference.

2. The database is accessed via a shortcut to it that is placed on each desktop. The back end and front end are together and the developer said there is nothing he can do about it for now.

3. I recently mapped the folder that the database is in as the T: drive on each computer. It was being accessed by it's location as a network share previously. This didn't appear to make a difference either.

Is there hope? One more thing. I cleaned up each PC and maxed out the RAM (2GB-4GB) because . . . why not. Still have latency issues with Access.

Hope one of you is really good with Access. Could I somehow configure the access to Access as an ODBC connection? I'm not 100% sure I know what that means, how to do it or if it will make a difference but I'm not opposed to trying "stuff" out.

Thanks for the help.

POTo me it sounds like each time you open access its bring a copy of the database across to the machine. If the database is big than the computer has to wait for the database. This is your delay.

How big is the database? and try to open a work doc or some other file from the same machine to test the speed of a smaller file.

The only problem is with this database or with network access in general for those computers? (Check it before answering).
The switches are configured for a certain speed or they are allowed to negotiate the speed for each connection? (in fact the question is if each connection is reported by the switches to be at least 100 Mbps)
How long are the network cables? I know, it is not related to your problem, I'm just curious about the second switch - or the first one. Maybe one of them is a firewall also?

Have you restarted the switches? Maybe something has gone wrong during a power peak or a glitch in one's software. Or the network map (memorized by each switch during functioning) has become corrupted.

Have you tried one of the computers to another switch? I mean a computer where you don't have that problem to try it at the far end of the chain and see if you have problems or not? (If it is not a laptop and it's difficult to move here and there forget about this "option").

You don't have to buy a server. You can CONNECT to it with Windows XP Home, but you won't be able to create a domain and add those computers to domain (and you don't need a domain for 6 computers).

If you WANT to see if your network has speed problems you may try also to copy a big file (1 GB or 2 GB) and see how much time it takes on every computer. Ping responses are ok?

ODBC is used to connect to a database, it's a protocol. The designer (developer) of the access application has to work with it, he will ask you what exactly he needs.
