Solve : xp over vista?

Answer»

hi guy's, my new p.c. has vista on it i'd like to install xp HOME on instead, my question is, do i need to uninstall vista and if so how do i do that, or can i instal xp over vista, your help would be most apprieciated! What is the make and model of the computer?just get a windows cd and load to the cd on the bootup. it'll take you all through the install process.

just be sure to backup any important files you have IF you were already using vista and when you install, you just format your drive.hi, the p.c. has been built for me using a intel celeron 3.2 ghz dual core cpu and has 2 gb ram, is that info of any use to you?Quote from: RAGS on May 07, 2008, 04:24:35 PM

will this method just over install the vista then? or does it erase vista off the harddrive?Quote from: mcxeb52! on May 07, 2008, 04:14:16 PM

why is it not going to work? you just reformat your computer and install windows xp on it and in the middle of that installation, there should be an option that to reformat your hard drive which erases all the vista stuff. That's all it takes and why would it stall at the XP install unless the cd/dvd drive can't read the cd at all.....

That link also shows the step by step xp installation you do if you want to get rid of windows vista and it's the same as I mentioned. Quote from: mcxeb52! on May 07, 2008, 04:14:16 PM

You must be more precise when GIVING advice... The site you linked clearly states Quote
Make sure you have a Windows XP Pro CD and a valid activation key.
To 'Just get a windows cd' will not work. There are major problems when downgrading from a machine built expressly for Vista, for example hardware drivers for XP may not be available because they have not been written. The first drivers required will, of course, be for SATA drives which are required at the start of the OS install if SATA drives are in use. Careful, very careful, preparation must be done before making the DECISION to give it a go.

Here is one of the responses on the linked site:Quote

I love how this article tries to put the warm and fuzzy spin on the old trash and dash. Backup your data, trash your system, then run around like a mad man trying to find all your installation disks so you can have a FUNCTIONING computer again! His follow up article will be titled "10 Reasons to Downgrade to Windows ME!"

For anyone contemplating the dumping of Vista in favor of XP I advise caution. Whilst not saying it cannot be done take every precaution especially if Vista came pre-installed, you might want to go back to Vista if the XP venture goes belly up.

Good luck.
well cheers guy!! there's some interesting views there, i'll let you know how i get on!I have been dual XP home with booting with Vista HB for a year, and this works well. Here is a guide: http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-make-XP-Vista-dual-boot-Indepen-t98982.htmlAlso before doing this, make sure there are drivers available for your hardware for XP.

Solve : Windows vs. Printer Control Codes?

Answer»

In DOS-based programs, you can send control CODES to a printer to change fonts, skip to a specified line, etc. You can also have such codes in a text file and copy that file to the printer, using DOS COPY command, and the codes will be properly recognized and executed by the printer. But if those same codes are sent to the printer through WINDOWS, whether by using Windows to print the text file mentioned above from, say, Notepad, or whether from a VB program, the codes are not interpreted as printer controls at all, but simply printed as though they were text. Why is this, and is there a way around the limitation in Windows? You seem to be talking about those ANCIENT devices like Epson dot matrix printers, which can be run as either character (text) where the fonts are stored in a ROM in the printer, or in raster (dot-addressable) mode. In general, printers that are run from Windows are run in raster mode rather than character mode. That is, when you print text from Notepad, the printer driver sets the printer in graphics mode, (which means control codes are no longer recognized, for obvious reasons) and sends the printer the necessary dot data to print the characters.

To get character mode printing, use control codes, etc, you can install the Windows generic text-only printer driver. (Plenty of ARTICLES you can Google for.)

Sometimes also appear running windows normally or safe mode page, if i click either one same again go back. What happen ah?The blue screen indicates a serious issue. Did you install any hardware lately? If so, can you use a boot disk like barts PE to remove it? You may need to boot to a rescue disk of some kind (PE is good) and copy all files, then format and reload Windows. Reply with any changes (software and hardware) that you have made recently.Do the following: Click the start button.
Right click my computer, and select properties.
click the advanced tab
click startup and recovery, and uncheck the restart on error.

Next time it happens you should be able to read the page.
Copy and PASTE it here. Ah... copy and paste? *retype* it here.Copy & Paste here? DUH !!!!! THANKS Bones 92 I owe ya one. Welcome lol... Quote from: cryhelp

Do the following: Click the start button.

Emmmm - which Start button would that be? The OP isn't getting past the splash screen, not even when trying Safe mode.

Guys the problem is that i cant even enter into the windows i'll try using boot cd first will update you guys later

thanks anyway for those who replyIf the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) flashes by too fast to read, try to stop the reboot process.

Power up the computer, tapping the F8 KEY about once per second or faster. You should see the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item to stop the reboot cycle. Hopefully instead of rebooting, it will now stop on a BSOD. If you get BSOD, copy the "exact" error message text and numbers and post here. This information can be used to SEARCH Microsoft Knowledge Base and/or Internet for possible causes and resolution.

You could also try booting with the "Last known good configuration" item from the Windows Advanced Options menu. This also happen to my PC

Solve : Cannot get new pages to open up when a link is clicked on?

Answer»

For awhile now I have had this problem. In emails I receive that have a link in them to click, I click on the link and NOTHING pops up. I know something does sometime. Because when there is sound with it, I can hear the sound, but no page pops up. This problem also occurs when I am on different sites and click a link that would normally OPEN another page. Again nothing pops up. But sometimes I can get around this if I right click 'open up in a new tab or window'. I believe a few months back when I was cleaning out programs I no longer used, I accidentally deleted something I did need. I am pretty sure this problem has nothing to do with a pop up blocker. Because I have tried this with the blocker on or off. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS, discoalDo you get any kind of "Active X controls" messages at the top of the screen? Also check your internet settings. You may have the controls set to high. What browser, what email program, what WINDOWS version?Outlook EXPRESS, windows xp and use internet explorer. not that skilled in computers. just the basics. thanks for any advice. by the way, i have tried 'system restore' when i started having this problem and it would not allow me to get back to before i was having this problem.Do you have Windows XP CD?

Solve : computer takes longer while installing WindowsXP at 39mins?

Answer»

this is really weird...
my computer keep on restarting up to the safe mode or normal mode menu.
so i reinstall windowsXP and FORMATED my Harddrive.
but when the installation reach to the 39Min's its just keep on there and did not
continue to move. i reinstall again and again and again but still when the installation reach the 39min its a long wait, the 39Min's of wait BECOMES hours and hours it don't move.

so i bring my PC to the shop, the technician just put a CD, i try to ask what's it for he did not answer me. After some clicks he remove the CD and put windowXP and miraculously its finished loading.

Now the same thing is happing with my other PC.
can anyone know what the CD for ? how can i get it :-)
I don't know what he did but I would like to talk with that tech!

It sounds like he has a boot disk that let him work with your hard drive. Maybe mark a bad block?

Sounds like a clone CD to me.

And it also sounds like you have bad memory. It's possible his XP CD was from MS and the one you used may not be...
If that's not the case the most common cause of this is RAM issues...
How about some machine SPECS ? ?GADZOOKS Quaxo....typing faster than me again !bad block?
bad memory?

how can the clone CD fix the bad block?
Where can i find a clone CD?
What is a clone CD anyway?

bad memory ... i had just add a second hand memory to my PC.
it's 128MB before then i put another 128MB and 64MB...
I'll try to put new one...

but how did the tech guy fix it if its a bad memory using the CD ? Quote from: patio on May 08, 2008, 08:43:25 AM

its a genuine copy ... i think?
yeah maybe the memory is the problem ... Quote
its a genuine copy ... i think?

The best way to tell is the CD is filled with shiny holograms and says Microsoft all over it...somehow i don't think this is the case here.

You may want to reconsider putting XP on that machine even if it is a RAM issue...
XP with all of the updates will eat up most of that hard drive. Thanks for the reply

Solve : Win XP FTP HELP?

Answer»

I am running win xp pro and I just found out on the Internet about Win XP Network Placeses and how to upload web pages I make with it.

This would be good I can get rid of one more PROGRAM and just use win xp to upload my web pages.

But befor I do I have a fue Q/As??

It says I just copy and past what I want to upload but how many thing can I upload at one time??

And have anybody used this and is it any good and should I know about anything like Pros and Cons.
ThanksHow MUCH you can upload at one time depends on your ISP...contact them for details.I make web sites for people and I want to know how many diferant web accounts can be created with win xp FTP built in program?

I know that when I setup my account I just click on the name to open my web account and upload my files but can I make a fue or howw many?FTP= File Transfer Protocol...it is a method of uploading/DLoading files to servers...
ALTHOUGH it's the most popular way of uploading webpages it has nothing to do with creating them...
Please restate your questionWhat I ment was that in windows xp it says that I can creat an acount for FTP.

And I input my Doman name my pass word and things like that.
And when I want to uplaod anything I just go into Network Placess and click on my Acount name I just created.

And then I can upload my web site to my server.

But can I have just one account for me or can I make as many as I want SAY one for me and I click on my FTP account then upload my web site and one for other people that I click on there account and uplaod there web site witch may be at a diferant server?Again these questions can only be answered by your ISP...what type of account you have determines how many websites; email accounts etc. you are allowed to have...
I can't provide these answers.

Solve : WINDOW XP DOES NOT OPEN?

Answer»

AFTER I LOAD SSP2.0 I RESTATRED MY COMPUTER BUT THE SYSTEM START TO RUN AND RUN AND DOES NOT OPEN THE WINDOWit's WEIRD. Try loading into safe MODE and see if it runs. Then if that runs, see if you can do system RESTORE in the safe mode to an earlier TIME so that you can use your computer while figuring out why loading ssp2.0 and restarting computer caused windows to stop working.Quote from: jorge55 on May 07, 2008, 11:31:02 PM

AFTER I LOAD SSP2.0 I RESTATRED MY COMPUTER BUT THE SYSTEM START TO RUN AND RUN AND DOES NOT OPEN THE WINDOW

Please do not post all in capital letters.
Was this a "clean" install of a new operating system; "update" to earlier version of same operating system (e.g. Windows XP); or "upgrade" from older operating system (e.g. Windows 9x/ME)?
If you have a sytem restore disk I would use that to go back before the updates an then try installing sp 2 again. I would scan for maleware an stuff too.

Solve : Computer freezes every minute during 5 seconds?

Answer»

My laptop computer FREEZES exactly every minute during approximately 5 seconds (screen, mouse, etc). This happens all the time and it is independant of the running applications....

I noticed it with Skype because I loose communication during the 5 SECOND period every minute however it happens with any other application aswell.

I tried running an AV but nothing is found....

Is anybody familiar with this issue? You say computer freezes every minute during 5 seconds. Is that freezes for 5 seconds every minute? Does it automatically unfreeze or do you have to reboot? What VERSION of Windows are you running? Did this just start and have you installed new program?so in one minute, you get 55 seconds of usability and 5 seconds of frozen computer. And this happens every minute the computer is on?Did you check temps?NO, I don't reboot; after the 5 second pause, everything goes back to normal by itself, then, 55 seconds later, another 5 second pause... continues periodically...

The Windows version is XP Home EDITION...and the temp is fine; fan seems to work correctly (starts and stops from time to time in a normal basis..)

Is was thinking it might be a sort of infection (which the AV didn't detect)

1. What is Make and Model Number of laptop?

2. How much system memory does the laptop have?

3. Boot to Safe Mode to see if problem exists in that environment. Safe Mode is a "minimal" boot so you're running with basic drivers, limited hardware, and no startup programs.

At system startup, tap the F8 key about once per second or faster. Windows Advanced Options Menu should appear. Use "up" and "down" arrows to select a boot option. Start with "Safe Mode" and then perhaps "Safe Mode with Networking".

If problem doesn't exist in Safe Mode, it's probably a software issue. You would then want to control which "software" automatically starts at boot and LOGIN in an attempt to identify the culprit (for the symptoms). But we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Solve : Restore?

Answer»

My friends computer was messed up, whenever she would start it up it would give her an ERROR about the internal clock, and then shut down, and all the advice she could GET was to send it to the manufacturer and let them fix it, but they couldn't gaurentee her files would be left intact. We tried a few things but NOTHING would work, so finally I GOT into the restore section, and there was an option to restore Windows XP and it would auto-backup the whole harddrive, so we did it. Low and behold, the computer was able to start up, and most of the harddrive was backed up, except the files she wanted. Her music and her pictures, now, there are some music, and a random folder with about 30 pictures in it, all from different folders. Is there anyway to locate the rest, or possibly get them back from the dismyl abyss...or did I make a big mistake? You might look under "all users" or somewhere else on the HDD for the lost files. System Restore does not normally remove personal files. So they may be on your drive 'somewhere'. I would conduct a thorough search for them before taking any other permanent action.

Use your "search TOOL" and "explore hard drive" thru My Computer on main drive.

Also you may find some tech support at this site for further use:

Solve : Cursor losing focus while editing text?

Answer»

First I thought it was my mouse, then I thought it might be OpenOfficeWriter, but then it happened in notepad and while typing text into this forum as well. It is pretty darn annoying for sure.

While typing the cursor changes focus from where I am typing to some other place in the previously typed document.

Does an(there it goes again, this time completely gone from the text field altogether) does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

Anyone know of a virus that has done this?My first thought would be to check and see what other programs you have running.

Does it usually just put the cursor back at the beginning of the textbox you have open, or does it jump all over the place?

Also, a virus scan wouldn't hurt. Make sure your virus scanner is up to date before scanning as well.It jumps all over, usually within the text field. I've got Windows XP Pro SP2, McAfee Suite, Adaware... all providing a clean bill of health.

whoops! A Light jut went on in my head!

There is a distinct possibility that when I am typing I inadvertently tap the laptops cursor pad, thus refocusing the cursor where ever I had left the cursor, usually in the text field. I will look into adjusting the touchpad's sensitivity, or maybe disabling it as I have a cordless optical/mouse. I generally only use the touchpad when the terrain is too difficult for the optical mouse. Thus far this ENTIRE parragraph had had no errors. I've been carefull not to touch the touchpad at all.

Hey I think you've solved my problem. Your a genius!!

Haha. Not sure if I solved your problem.

I would like to mention, though, that if you prefer you can also turn off the tap feature of your trackpad, USING the click "BUTTON" instead. I actually could not alter anything REGARDING the touchpad as I had not installed the software for it with my last reload of windows. It was working fine so I said, what the heck, leave it be.

Thus I did install the software and did notice I could disable the tap function. It also has a setting for "if there is a usb mouse CONNECTED then disable the touchpad. This is what I sellected but I think I need to restart before it begins to work. Other than that I am good to go.

Yeah, it's nice when they have the setting to automatically disable when a usb mouse is present. Can't tell you how many people I know who've had an issue like yours and didn't realize what was causing it.

Solve : changing display size?

Answer»

Hi all! My mother sent me an EMAIL with a question that I can't answer. She has a Dell LAPTOP and is running Windows XP. Below is her question... anybody know how to fix the problem?

On our laptop, the desktop picture has shrunk so that there is a black edge on each side of it. We don't know how to fix it. Do you know how? I don't know how it HAPPENED, but it just appeared that way after Dad was working on something on line. Let me know if you know of a way to spread the desktop out to encompass the whole size of the screen.

Thank You for any help!

DianneSounds like it has a widescreen one the laptop but she isn't using a right screen RESOLUTION.

Here's a basic explanation of how to change that:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/resolution.mspxThank You Quaxo... we'll give that a shot.Where you choose your background picture, you have a pulldown menu with 3 options:

- Center
- Tile
-Stretch

They should select Stretch.Thank You Astoria, it's not just the background picture though, it's the entire workspace area that has shrunk.

She did try changing the resolution, she says that she can move the slider bar, but then it just GOES right back to where it was when she clicks apply & ok.

I appreciate both your efforts to help! What resolution did she try to use, and at what resolution is it stuck? You can go to display, then settings, click advanced, click the adapter tab, in lower left is list all modes button, click it and then you can increase your settings.Well, she went back and tried adjusting the resolution again and this time it stayed where she wanted it... so problem fixed!

Thank you all for you help!!!

Dianne
that is great. Thank you for posting the positive results. Nice

Solve : Hard-drives gone missing overnight!?

Answer»

Hi,

I came to my PC this morning and was faced with this error message on boot "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". So i went down the NTDLR fix route, with no joy, I've tried a lot of other things to try and get up-and-running again, all with no joy. In my BIOS, however, my secondary IDE Slave/Master shows as NONE where is WOULD normally list my 2 hard-drives. Both drives are less than 6 months old so i think it shouldn't be them.

My Specs are as follows:

Hard-drives: 2 x 250 Seagate SATA
Motherboard: ASUS P5NE SLi
Processor: Intel Core Duo 6400
Memory: 2 x 1 Gig
GFX Card: NVIDIA Ge-Force 8800 GTX
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2

Another thing to note is my MONITOR won't come on, for the first few hours i was at a loss till i realised i could try the HDMI cable plugged into the back of my TV from my gfx card and it worked. I hope this sheds some light. Does ANYBODY have any ideas?

Regards

Rizla
The message you are getting is telling you that the registry has become corrupted. There are ways to fix it.
Go here for instructions : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

As far as your Monitor and hard drive issue....did you have a power outage or surge? If you did, that could explain all of the problems. Not saying that is the problem, but I have had that happen to me.

And what is connected to your primary IDE connection?good reply by previous post. U could also try to fix the problem using your XP Win install CD. Simply insert the XP CD like if u were going to reinstall, but do not reformat. Follow the steps u will come to a step that will state fix install XP partition. Follow the instructions and it will fix the reg. Good luck. Quote from: lsutiger on April 27, 2008, 05:01:50 PM

I can't do this as when i run through the recovery console it tells me that a hard-disk is not detected, or words to that effect.

Again this fails as it's not picking up my hard-drives

Another thing I've noticed is that on my POST screen, it's got a message about my hard-drives being 'SATA' & 'Healthy'. I'm at a loss, all help/advice is welcomed.

RizlaSo nobody can help any further on this?

RizlaUnplug the secind SATA drive and re-boot a few times...does this produce any good results ? ?
Also did you attempt to install another OS on the 2nd SATA drive ? ?

If not insert your XP CD and boot to the Recovery Console with the 2nd SATA still dis-connected and at the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Re-boot and see if this fixes it...
If not repeat the above process except this time at the prompt type fixmbr and hit Enter and re-boot.

If neither of these work you're looking at a Repair install of XP .....post back for details.....Quote from: patio on April 29, 2008, 02:14:25 PM

OK sorry it's took so long to reply

It SEEMS all my PC problems all come at once. If i unplug one/either of the drives i get a POST error message stating "Selecting array. Faulty Nvidia stripe 465.76. Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter to reboot."

If i try doing a repair install i get this message "Setup did not find any hard disks installed in your computer make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected and any disk-related hardware config is correct. This may involve running a manufacturers supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup can't continue. Press F3 to quit.

It's like the drives are fine and are showing as such in the raid setup utility, but just not showing in a similar fashion in my BIOS.

I can't do a repair/reinstall until my BIOS can 'see' my drives.

As always any help/advice is welcomed.

Regards

RizlaWho setup this machine originally and was a RAID array installed ? ?
Sounds like it.Me & yes.

Where do i go next?So nobody can help me any further?

Solve : someone whom I don't know must have been using my PC?

Answer»

Hi all,

What WOULD you check to see if someone other than you have used your PC?

I suspoect someone other than my family members had logged in my PC, copying couples of files with removeable device and then went away.

Could you tell me how to find the log file in my PC that contains the user login time and which files in my PC have been COPIED?

Thanks

I am using Win XP SP2The log you need is SECURITY audit log in event viewer, but that only helps if it is enabled (not by default). Why do think someone else is using it?If some one has logged on, I know of no way to find out now. However if you wish to set up so you can tell, here is how: Log on as an administrator
Click Start, click Run, type mmc /a (note the space between mmc and /a), and then click OK.
On the File menu, click ADD/Remove Snap-in, and then click Add.
Under Snap-in, click Group Policy, and then click Add.
In Select Group Policy Object, click Local Computer, click Finish, click Close, and then click OK.
At this point, you might want to save this console for further use. Note you can add multiple snap-in and MANAGE multiple computers from this console. I find it rather useful myself.
On the left hand side, navigate to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Audit Policy
On the right hand side, double-click "Audit Logon Events"
Check the boxes for Success and Failure, click OK
You can close the Microsoft Management Console,

Solve : Problem going into standby mode?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002, Service Pack 2. Lately, when I sign off to GO into "Standby" the computer freezes. I have to turn off and reboot. What can I do to solve this problem?
I've always had problems with computer periodically FREEZING when I try to COME out of "Standby"
I have defragmented, cleanup, etc.I had that problem myself I just have it set at home office and only have my monitor go into standby mode. That's pretty typical of windows.I KNOW this doesn't help solve the problem, but I have 2 different PC's and both of them have that same standby problem. Lately I just use hibernate (hold SHIFT when clicking on standby) and so far have had no problems.I had similar problem, but mine would not come out of sleep mode, I googled the problem to no avail. What I did was change my screen saver to start after 10 minutes. Then in power options the only way I could correct the problem was set the power SCHEMES to max battery, turn off monitor= 30 min, hard disks =never, system standby =30min, hibernate=never. works for me in win xp-sp2. Some of the smart guys Broni, Patio, etc. will start dropping by and probably have better solution.I also use Win XP 2. When using the Ancestry web site I automatically connect to the net, but when I had my computer going into stand-by, after coming out of it, the prog would not auto connect to the web and each time I would have to reboot. Cancelled the 'standby' mode and everything is ok again.

Solve : CPU column in taks manager ALL 0's including system Idle process?

Answer»

I have Win XP SP2 Gigabyte MOBO AMD Sempron. The system is about 5 years old. I had changed the bios to alarm at certain temp to avoid overheating. After 4 yrs alarm started. I TOOK off the SIDE casing to allow more air flow and that stopped it. I then gave the computer to a relative who left the casing on and after 4 or so months of continued beeping, the computer would startup, beep then shutdown. I openned the case and used a vaccuum cleaner to get the dust out. I removed the case fan and cleaned it. Then I removed the fan off the heatsink and there was an enormous amount of dust caked in the heatsink. I cleaned that out and now the computer starts and runs for about 1 minute. It gave me just enough time to pull up the task manager, click on processes TAB and sort the CPU column. The entire column is 00 including the System Idle Processes. My guess is a burned out processor. Any IDEAS?Yes... I'd say that AMD is cooked.

AMD's burn up and crack if they overheat. The older ones like your was not engineered with Thermal Throttling like the Intel CPU's. If the system is important to get back up and running you can get a AMD Sempron Replacement on ebay really cheap Semprons are a worthless processor for most, they are the Celeron of the AMD series like the Duron. The processor to have is the Athlon, and you can probably also install the Athon in place of the Sempron and get much better performance. I have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ ( 2.08Ghz), 1GB Ram, and 8X-AGP GeForce 6200 video and the trick to keeping it running is to keep the CPU cooling fan clean of obstructing dust blankets. This system is good for gaming, but not as good as my 2.8Ghz P4 with HT CPU, 1.5GB DDR2 Ram, and PCIe Geforce GT8500 Videocard.Thanks.

Solve : Very slow XP Home uploading?

Answer»

:'(My XP Home is VERY slow when UPLOADING whatever program, internet, e-mail I'm starting.
I've run "msconfig", subscribed to "registry mechanic" and taken away 1.600 more or less significant errors.
Furthermore I've made defragmentation and run "cleanup manager and used "MY Computer" - "Properties" - "Advanced" - "Performance" - "Settings" - " "Visual effects" - "adjust for best performance" - "OK" but there is no improvement. Scanning with Norman anti virus program - I'm clean.
I've been told that my hard drive might be corrupt but before bying a new one I would like to be adviced from other sources as well. My present HD is occupied up to only 20%.
My computer works the entire time with a very noisy, irritating sound, like someone dragging chains.
PLEASE, ADVICE ME! FIRST what are the specs of your computer? ram, cpu speed drive sizeMy RAM is 512, your other questions I don't even know what it is - sorry.Quote from: njmvimnom on April 29, 2008, 07:21:32 AM

216 GHz, 512 MB RAM

I hope this will help you help meI don't like the description of that sound...you should remove a side panel and try and determine the source.
Check first of all to make sure all fans are operating properly.
Does there seem to be any other errant behaviour such as freezes or lockups ?There indeed are lockups and freezes If the noise is coming from the hard drive, then back up your stuff and have the drive replaced as it's getting ready to go south.

Alan <>< Hello all supporters to my question, I don't know if I dare ask you once more. How should I do to back up my hard disc?Read this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320820Have you opened the case yet to see what's amiss inside ? ?
If that noise is the CPU or Vid Card fan you risk burning them up.
Finding out what's making the noise should be the priority right now.
If you haven't DONE this before possibly a friend who has can assist ? ?
I'm very grateful to all your help and participation in this matter.
I've copied what I hope will be enough for you to help me.

Solve : computer froze during shutdown?

Answer»

my computer froze during shut down it went as far as windows is shutting down and then it stopped. I had to turn it off with the power buttonAnd.........?then I waited the normal 30 SECONDS to a minute and turned it on and booted up fine and then I did a restart to see if it would do it again and it didn't.If it happened just once, forget about it.This happens from TIME to time. Sometimes a program can cause Windows to lock up during shutdown. If you have normal OPERATION now without any more lock ups, then you probably have nothing to worry about. However, if the problems persits, COME back and give us more details on it and we'll see what we can do.

Solve : computer shuts down all by itself?

Answer»

Hello: I don't know if this is a MS software problem, a hardware problem, or what. I'll try to describe what goes on:
I have an HP Pavillion dv4000 and have been using it a lot for about 2 YEARS. Usually, the fan didn't COME on when I used it; there was no noise at all unless I used the CD drive. Then gradually I noticed that the fan came on sometimes. Now it comes on usually. And it gets stronger and stronger and then the computer goes black--no hibernating, just complete shutdown.
Here, let me tell you that I use Microsoft XP 5.1 with service pack 2 and Firefox for my DEFAULT browser. The computer has 55GB with 35GB used. Do you need to know anything else about the system?
At first this problem seemed to happen when I had more than 7 tabs open in my Firefox (I teach online, do research, etc.) In fact, before I switched to Firefox, this never happened at all. But now it happens even if I'm off line. The fan just whirs and whirs and then sometimes the computer hangs and then shuts off or sometimes it just shuts down without any warning.
Also, this evening when I try to restart it after shutting down, I get the "Active Desktop Recovery" page. If I click "Restore the active desktop" I get this: Internet explorer SCRIPT error Line 65: Character 1 Error: Object doesn't support this
URL: F:6:///C: /Documents%20and%20Settings/jalali/Applications%20data/Microsoft/Internal%20Explorer/Desktop.htt

If I click No" to Do you want to continue running scripts on this page, then everything comes up. If not the computer may or may not continue to come up.

I wonder: Why does this error seem to be related to Explorer when I'm not using it at that time, and in fact haven't used it in months?

Also: The Main problem is: Why does the computer shut down? Will this damage it? What can I do to prevent this?

Thanks.
Dr. D.Sounds to me like the computer is OVERHEATING, causing the computer to shut down.

Not a good idea to let your fan be left alone when having issues....So what do I do about this? Is this something I can fix myself? Also, why do you think it is overheating more often than before? Why has this only recently happened? Do you think it needs cleaning or something? What could be causing this overheating and how do I solve it?
thanks again Dr. D.You could try pointing any fan (desk fan, box fan, etc) towards the computer and try things out that way. However, in the state the computer's in, it's possible you could lose any/all files and even damage the processor or other components (if it were to continually overheat).

It's up to you if you want to risk it. Otherwise you could always go buy a fan to replace your problem one, they're pretty cheap at your local computer parts store.Quote from: Drd on January 23, 2008, 02:03:30 PM

Also, why do you think it is overheating more often than before? Why has this only recently happened? Do you think it needs cleaning or something? What could be causing this overheating and how do I solve it?
thanks again Dr. D.

It could be that, if the computer hasn't been cleaned for a while, there has been a pileup of dust, making the computer heat up faster. However, it could also be caused by you running more power-intensive programs now versus before. I don't all the details of this computer's past though, so I couldn't say that for sure. Now, let me ask this: Would replacing the fan in a laptop be a complicated thing to do? You see, I live in a rather remote area and I don't want to trust my laptop to someone who would have to be a really big expert. If this is just a small techie thing that anyone can do, then fine. If not, I'd be worried. What do you think?

Also, I do think that two things could be causing the overheating: I think it could need cleaned. Also, my kids have loaded things that are always running in the background. Can I simplify this background stuff on my own? And if so, how?

Thanks Dr. D.Quote from: Drd on January 23, 2008, 02:14:17 PM

On a DV-4000, I don't think it's too difficult to get to the inside, but I don't recommend it unless you are comfortable with pc hardware (specifically laptop). You may be able to get it apart fine and replace the fan, but then you have to put it all together.

If that's the case, you can try a can of air cleaner. However, if you can tell that your fan is not turning on (or is turning on and off) I highly recommend fixing the fan. A non-working fan can cause many problems.

Honestly, focus on this later. The issue with your fan is not going to be fixed by running less programs. It may prolong the amount of time before your system overheats too much and quits working, but it will not fix it.
Thanks for the warning about the possibility of overheating. The fan works almost constantly now, where it hardly ever did before. Either it's not as efficient as before, or is clogged, or whatever. At any rate, you've helped to pinpoint the problem as overheating and fan and cleaning problem. Thanks!
DR. D.No problem. Glad to help.

Solve : Uninsatll Search BAR HELP?

Answer»

I just installed Morpheus the Music file Sharing program and did not like it ata all so I uninstalled it.

It left a program in my ad remove programs list called NEED2FIND BAR

When I try to uninstall it a window comes up that says?
ERROR LOADING C:\PROGRAM 1\BAR 1. BIN \ND2FNBAR.DLL

And right under this it says?
THE SPECIFIED MODULE COULD NOT FIND

So I though maybe I have to stop it from running first so I checked my msconfig startup list and thank God it is not in there.

But it is on my Internet Exploreor Search Bar.
It says Morphius and it is a Search Bar it attached itself to my internet explorer.

Please please how do I get rid of it and uninstall it
Thanks Since no one has replied to your request, I will take a shot. Hopefully you have it solved by now, but if not, did you look in search to see if it was listed on C drive? I assume you are running an anti-virus and spyware program. I think this may be a BUG. There are some Total Uninstall programs that may help you. I personally use Revo Uninstaller that works for me. You can check it out at: http://www.revouninstaller.com/ OR down load Hi Jack This, run it and post the file here and let Broni or another mal WARE SPECIALIST take a look. Good Luck. You may need to re-install morpheus and un-install it in Add/Remove programs...
How did you uninstall it the first time ? ?The first time I uninstalled the Morphius program I did it in my Ad Remove Programs list and it worked.

But on my Internet Explorer it has a Secound Search Bar that say Morphius.
You know like the Yahoo Search Bar that is out there that attaches itself to the Browser.

But this one I can't get rid of.
I do see it in my Un install programs list but it wont get rid of it
I did run my Anti Virus and Spy ware program and it did not think it is a bug I gessHave you tried system restore?Did you try opening the tools menu on ie and clicking manage add ONS. You could disable the Morphius bar. That doesn't get rid of it but at least it is no longer visible.

Solve : Wiping Out A Drive?

Answer»

A friend is planning to get rid of an old COMPUTER. He has been running WINDOWS (I'm not sure which version- I THINK it's XP), and wants to make sure the HARD drive on the computer is wiped clean. He asked me what is the simplest way to do this. I know of several methods, but wondered if anyone had a suggestion to answer his question.
TomWell, he might use the WindowsXP CD to remove the PARTITION(s) on the drive, or he could run a program like Darik's Boot And Nuke, though DBAN takes a while to run. Thanks, I'll pass the advice along.
TomDBAN is good program in my opinion and best of all it is free: http://dban.sourceforge.net/ Yes, I'm given to understand that removing a partition removes all the data on that partition, but I've used DBAN two or three times, and I like it.

Solve : what program to open e-mail attachment - .dat file?

Answer» HI everybody,

I can't get this file to open:

File name: winmail.dat
File size: 32kb
File type: application/octet-stream

If I try to open this e-mail attachment I get a dialog box that says:

"Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it"

Options are:

'Find, Save or Cancel'. If I click 'Find" I get this page:
http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?EXT=dat

Does this automatically mean I don't have the software installed to open a .dat file, or is there another way I can open it?

I have Windows XP Professional, version 5.1.2600, SP-2.
Is more information needed about my PC?

Thank's for any help!
MIKE
There is no REASON to open ".dat" file.
If you definitely want to, you can use Notepad, and it'll look like this:

One solution to the problem is to visit http://www.biblet.com and download the WMDecode program found there (look about halfway down the page). This will at least allow you to decode the winmail.dat files and extract any useful attachments from them.

Other than this, there's not much you can do on your end to fix the problem, since it's not your email program generating the problem. If you just don't want to deal with the problem, the other approach is to reply to the individual who sent you the offending email and ask that they re-send the message, with the attached files, as a plain text message, not in Rich Text FORMAT or HTML
tomshope
I wasn't aware of that program, but, as I can see from your link:
Quote
The winmail.dat file contains a formatted version of the message (which this program ignores) and any attached files.
So, it looks to me, like there nothing new to see in that ".dat" file, or...I'm reading it incorrectly. You are correct!
As it states all you can do is reply to the individual who sent you the email and ask that they re-send the message, with the attached files, as a plain text message, not in Rich Text Format or HTML

Solve : Sound puzzle?

Answer»

I've been helping my friend with his Sony Vaio desktop with Windows XP.
The computer was heavily infected with no firewall, or antivirus.
We cleaned everything out, turned Windows firewall on, installed AVG.
All said, and done, there is no SOUND, which worked before.
This is what we tried:
- uninstall/reinstall on-board sound drivers
- he bought new sound card, we disabled on-board sound, installed new card - at this point, he is able to play music CD, music from flash drive, but there is no system (Windows) sound, nothing will play from inside Windows (including browsers)
- sfc finds nothing
- Windows repair install does nothing

Any other ideas, before going for reformat, reinstall?volume settings? Mute box checked?
I had similiar problem and after lots of FRUSTRATION found that under device manager, sound, video & game controllers, PCI Audio Device the Device Usage was disabled. All sound settings (volume, mute, etc.) checked out.
No errors in Control Panel.SOLVED: installing K-Lite codec pack, fixed the problem Congratulations, knew you would get it. Thanks for posting solution. Man, It's been bugging me last two days.
I HATE sound problems, because what worked out this time, not necessary works in NEXT case...grrrrrrrrrrrr.Sound issues are indeed aggravating....have been since the DOS gaming days.

Solve : Ad Blocker?

I'm sorry. I'm out options, except for one....Opera.I already TRIED opera, last week when i was ready to give up. Oh well.... I SURE appreciate all you efforts. You've GONE above and beyond for sure. Thanks I guess it must have been something on your computer, as you have tested IE, firefox and Opera and your HJT log is checked up and good. I would have suggested you try Safari browser (which you probably know works with Windows now) but I am thinking that it wouldn't work either.

Sorry you're still having the problem. Yep thanks. I'm just thinking some how it's a combo of some good pop up and add BLOCKERS working too well. Remove them all as they are probably banging heads...pick your favorite one and install only that one. ya i've tried that also. but no luck. At least I think I uninstaled them all. But I don't know how to be sure. Do you know how to open the add/remove TOOL in windows? Check there to see if any browser is still listed. Only browser you can't uninstall is internet explorer. You can only upgrade to ie7 or downgrade to ie6 from ie7.

Solve : 3Com Driver for Win3.11?

Answer»

Hello all,
I am trying to install a 3Com EtherLink III 3c509B-C into a Soyo SY-7VBA133U MOTHERBOARD using Win 3.11. I have done a clean install of DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11, but I am unable to install my NIC's drivers. For some reason when I attempt to execute 3c5x9cfg.exe NIC configuration utility from DOS, I get this error: Run-Time Error r6003 - integer divide by 0. I have ran the pnpdsabl from the driver disk, disabled virus check and pnp os support in the BIOS, as well as set all IRQ and DMA settings to legacy ISA. If anyone has any knowledge of this old stuff, please help!

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Are there options to choose which DMA channel and IRQ you want to use?

Are you sure you want to disable plug and play support? It's been a long time since I've set IRQ's and DMA's -- I think you'll have to do it manually.

Welcome to the Forum! Thanks! No, I can't choose which channels to use, I can only switch from PnP to legacy ISA (which is what the NIC is). I'm pretty sure I have to disable PnP; I don't think Win 3.11 supports PnP. But I've tried installing the driver both ways - no luckOh, yes, that's right ... Win 3.11 -- no plug and play, as I remember.

Dos drivers for the faster Pentium machines for where you might EXPERIENCE divide overflow errors.

4th one on the page.....i believe this is the error you are getting so try this one.
You will still have to set up the IRQ's for Win 3.11 to get it to work but it should.Ok....many moons ago 3Com used a tool you had to down load and run from DOS. This tool would look though the ISA slots and find the card and LET you pick a IRQ. After you programed the Eprom on the card you would boot the machine in Win3.11 and load the drivers.

Normally you would put the tool onto a floppy and boot the machine off the floppy to program the card.

I don't know where to get the eprom loader tool. 3Com may still have it on there site.

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=all&sort=effdt&order=desc&sku=3C509B-COMBO

If I remember right the defualt IRQ was set to 5 on the 3Com stuff.....
A sharper memory than me, Spoiler.....Kudos.Thanks! Patio...

(takes a bow) Thank you for the input gentlemen,
I will try both these suggestions, hopefully with success. I'll keep you posted!
CurtIn case anyone is curious as to why I am playing with this antiquated stuff, I am an ATC maintainer with a sad equipment modernization program. Our voice recorder cpu went down and unfortunately the FAA has strick guidlines as to which hardware/software combinations are allowed, and the voice logger version I have only allows for Win 3.11 at the workstation. I am attempting to use the old CPU from our voice switch (actually fairly modern) as a replacement, it's just very stubborn. Anyway, I really appreciate you all for taking the time to help me.
CurtSpoiler:
I think the program you are referring to is 3c5x9cfg.exe, which is the configuration and diagnostic program for the NIC. If so, I am unable to get to this step, because I cannot even install the packet drivers (I'm guessing because the Mobo isn't recognizing the NIC)I would try another NIC myself but the program I was talking about was a Eprom programer. You had to make a DOS boot disk and at the A: PROMPT you typed the name of the program and it was almost like flashing the BIOS but it was for the NIC.

Let me look around and see if I can find it.

For now I know that the old 3Com stuff used 5 and 7 for the IRQs. I would try to manually set it to each of these in windows and reboot to see it it kicks in.

Thanks Spoiler, I will try that. Where in Win 3.11 can I set the IRQs? I think the Mobo isn't even recognizing/communicating the NIC, which I can only assume is why I cannot install the packet drivers.

The reboots seem to occur randomly, but when I am RUNNING computer INTENSIVE processes like games it happens more often. i am not sure if it is a hardware, software, or registry problem. Here are my specs:

Windows Xp Home edition Service Pack 2

Asus P5SD2-X motherboard

512 of ram

Radeon x1650 W/ 512mb

Intel Pentium D 2.80ghz

here is my latest minidump file if it would help solve the problem:

Any help would greatly be appreciated. If there is anymore information needed I will post it ASAP.
It might be an OVERHEATING problem, clean out the fans and heatsinks with a can of compressed air (DON'T use a vaccum)I agree. You may also run your computer with open case for a few hours, while gaming, and see if it changes anything.alright i'll give that a try
You also might want to test your ram www.docmemory.com

you could take out all your ram... then put one stick in there ... then try to restart your computer and see what happens.. .if everything works good... then repeat the process to find the bad ram!

make sure all your connection and cables are connected right inside your PC also.
Note: Check your heatsink and fan that goes to your CPU... it could be going bad!

Solve : Amount of Gigabytes up/downloaded from server?

Answer»

Hi there.
I am very new to broadband. When I was on dial-up I COULD see in the bottom right hand corner under status the up and down load amount I do have for that particular session, also the speed as well.
But since going ONTO ADSL (broadband), I have no INDICATION whatsoever of this.I like to keep track of the data though.
Any useful tips or FREE utility in this regards would be welcome..
My Computer is WINDOWS XP, Svce pack 2,

Your help would be appreciated

BertWindows XP does the same thing for broadband, but you may not notice the icon in the bottom right hand corner.

GO to Start --> Control Panel (or settings --> Control panel, depending on how your menu is setup), then go to network connections. Once there, right click on Local area connection, and click on Properties. At the bottom is a checkbox that says "Show icon in notification area when connected." Check that.

Once you have that checked you will see the icon in the bottom right, and you can just double click on it to see the activity. Windows shows it as packets rather than kb's or mb's, but it does say how many packets are sent and received.

If you don't like that, do a google search for something like "freeware network activity monitor"

Solve : I cannot boot into Windows XP?

Answer»

Hey guys this is my first post here Well my problem im having really doesnt allow me to give you much description but I will give you what I know. I have a Gateway Laptop M 505 Intel Pentium M Processor 1500 mhz System Bios version 49.01.01. Recently this just started where when I try to turn on the computer it keeps going througha cycle of bringing me to the Gateway logo before windows and restarting over and over. I can INDEED hear the harddrive cranking away like it wants to load up Windows but no luck. I do have a Windows system restore CD which I tried using but im unsure of what commands to use on the CD. When I boot off the restore cd I make it to the C:\WINNT prompt and from there im not sure what to do. I have also tried to boot into safe mode but it does the same thing which is going to the gateway screen then rebooting. etc. I have no USB plugs plugged in currently because I know that sometimes can hinder things. I dont know guys any help would be great please.

Do you remember doing/adding anything before this started to happen? Can you get into the BIOS to check the temperature?Try this>>>>

To start your computer using the Last Known Good Configuration that your computer has on record, simply start up your computer like normal and when you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message come up, hit the F8 key on your keyboard. Next, the Windows Advanced Options MENU will appear and you can use your keyboard's arrow keys to SCROLL down to the "Last Known Good Configuration (your most RECENT settings that worked)" option. Once you've got it highlighted, press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Your computer will then boot up successfully and you'll be able to look into what caused the problem in the first place. Now, keep in mind that the Last Known Good Configuration feature does not automatically fix the problems you were having. It will only get your computer started so you can troubleshoot the rest of the problem on your own. Either way, it's an easy way to combat your computer startup troubles.I tried the last known good configuration and it still continue to not let me load up windows. I have not added any software or devices in quite some time. I cant seem to find the tempurature in the bios. There is something strange about your System Recovery CD, because, as I can read here:
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPMC0/MLXPMC0su20.shtml
after BOOTING with that CD, your first screen should look like this:

Ecardius:

It appears that your system is in an infinite boot loop. By default, if system encounters catastropic error during load it attempts to display error message then automatically restarts. If you disable the "automatic restart on system failure", you should see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with error text and numbers (which currently is being masked by the quick restart). If you record those exactly as displayed you may be able to "google" for solutions.

Use the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" option from the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" (some refer to this as Safe Mode Menu). Generally access by tapping F8 key about once a second during reboot.

This doesn't resolve your problem but may provide information to determine why it is rebooting so you can fix it without doing complete re-install of Windows.

Solve : Memory Leak?

Answer»

When I use an internet browser, either Win ie, or firefox, both applications continue to grow in memory usage over time (an hour or so) until it reaches a point where the browser freezes up. At that point, I look in the Task Manager/Processes and can see that the browser app has grown in memory usage to about 90,000k. If I kill the process and reopen internet explorer or firefox, then I can browse for another half hour or until the process grows from about 30,000k to 90,000k of memory...at that time if freezes up again. It seems like any browser app is grabbing memory, but no allowing it to be returned to the memory POOL. Seems this started happening after i installed Windows Live Toolbar. Any ideas as to what is wrong, or how it can be repaired? Fred Start with Uninstalling Windows Live Toolbar.
Then in Task Manager>Processes, look under CPU column, and post back what process is the biggest user.I have already un-installed Windows Live Toolbar...problem still exists. Largest CPU processes are iexplorer 89,000K, followed by svchost.exe at 39,000K and then RTHDCPL.exe at 28,000KNo, look under CPU column! The "system idle process" is the item under CPU that has the highest number. It is running at about 90-95. Everything else is running at 00 to 02.Quote

This is the way, it should be. You have NORMAL CPU usage.Windows version, and computer specs: processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space, needed. Can you tell me if my 333 Mhz speed memory is compatible with my bus and processor speeds. Below is data pulled from my computer regarding my CPUs and bus speeds followed by the info on my memory DIMMs. Maybe that is the problem with my memory leak? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What Windows version is it?
Why do you keep saying, you have some memory leak?
I am using Windows XP. I call it a memory leak because it appears as if my browser app (either IE or firefox) will launch at a usage of about 30,000K and then over a half hour or so, it continues to grow in memory utililization until the browser freezes. At that point, I can see that the memory allocation in the Task Manager processes window has climbed to about 90,000 or 100,000K. If I stop the process and kill the browser, then I'm able to start it up again and go for another half hour until the memory allocation rises again...at which time it will freeze again.

I call it a memory leak because it appears that the browser apps continue to grab memory and don't release it back to the memory pool when it's done using it. It just continues to allocate memory until the browser STOPS functioning. The funny thing is that no other applications on my computer will do this. Only IE and firefox browsers.

Perhaps I'm calling it the wrong thing, but the bottom line is that any internet browser seems to consume memory allocation until the application freezes. Just don't know why.....memory leak would be if the program uses some memory to run (as normal) but fails to release the memory back to system upon termination of the program. So that amount of memory is essentially "wasted" since the system can't utilize it!At this very moment my Firefox is using 125MB of RAM, and I don't see any freezing.
I can see, you have 2GB of RAM, so any 100MB used by IE, or Firefox, shouldn't be of any concern.
It must be something else, what causes your browsers to freeze.

I see couple of things there, so let's make sure, your computer is OK...

Print these instructions out.

1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".

Solve : WinXP won't load; chkdsk keeps repeating and restarting?

Answer»

Hello all, this is my first post here. I'm a college student; majoring in computer systems engineering technology. Classes don't start for spring until the end of the week, so I can't have my professors help me, so I'm using fourms to fix my problem. Here it is:

I'm currently working on a Dell INSPIRION 1501, AMD 64x Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2.

The original problem was a registry error message that was coming up at startup, and Internet Explorer 7 would not load the Internet even THOUGH everything with the Local Area Connection was fine.

These problems were FIXED by: Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, and running TuneUp2008, which has a registry CLEANER, which fixed several problems. Everything seemed to work fine after this; up until I attempted to use Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware. The computer was not allowing them to access the internet.
Checked the Windows Firewall, and added the programs to the exceptions list, still nothing.

Then I realized that they had Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, so figuring that it was the Norton firewall blocking those programs I attempted to open Norton. The program would not open, and would freeze. After several unsuccessful attempts to uninstall Norton, (I was recieving some error message aboue being logged into Norton as an Admin user, but since Norton would not open, I could not do this) I found the solution on the internet, a file from Symtematec, I ran it, and it said that it would be completely uninstalled after the next restart, so I restarted.

Since I restarted from uninstalling Norton, Chkdsk runs at every startup. First it runs a 3-stage check, finds no problems, then reboots. At the next reboot, chkdsk will run again, this time with a 5-stage check. After hours and hours of chkdsk just repeatedly running on a loop, I attempted to boot in safe mode, which was unsuccessful. I'm also not able to boot into Last Known Good Config, it just starts the chkdsk again. The only thing I AM able to do, is run the WinXP CD at bootup and run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what I need to be fixing or doing within the Recovery Console.

From researching so far, I've learned that chkdsk has a registry entry that tells it to run on startup, but since I can't get into WinXP, how can I edit this entry in the registry? I just don't get what's causing chkdsk to run repeatedly on this loop, and why WinXP won't start; it just reboots after chkdsk completes, then chkdsk will run yet once again.

If anyone could help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks soooo much!!!First off believe it or not this is a common symptom after Norton removal...
But since it will not let you in to XP that can't be improved right now.
The good thing is that you are able to acces the Recovery Console.
Boot to the RC and run chkdsk /r see if it completes fully. If so back at the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter. Re-boot.
If it does not repeat the above procedure but this time before exiting the RC type in fixmbr and hit Enter.
Re-boot and it should start OK.
If not you will need to DLoad the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site and use them to create a bootable floppy/CD.
Run that to completion and post back the results...

When you do get to the point that XP loads correctly Follow This Guide...first and foremost, thanks for your reply!

Okay, so chkdsk /r completes fully. I did fixboot, and it completed. I rebooted, but was welcomed with chkdsk yet once again.

I went back into the RC, did fixboot again, then typed in fixmbr, when I did that, I recieved this message:

**CAUTION**
This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record.

FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed.

This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become inaccessible.

If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue.

Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?

I left off here, I'm very hesitant to say 'Yes' unless I have another opinion. UPDATE

So, i ran the 'fixmbr' command, it says that it was SUCCESSFUL, i exit and reboot...
... only to be faced with chkdsk yet once again! Grrrrr!! I let chkdsk do it's thing and restart, but upon restart, sure enough, there's chkdsk again to greet me!

Anyone have any other ideas/solutions??There is possibly an un-recoverable error with that hard drive...
Best bet would be to hook it up as a slave drive in a known working machine and copy/save/burn the data you need to CD/DVD.
2nd step would be to do as suggested and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site once your data has been saved.
This will tell you whether that drive can be trusted with important data or not.I've already ran System Diagnostics from the hard drive, and everything is running fine, no problems.Whose diagnostics did you run ? ?Dell Diagnostics, at startup, by pressing F12, it's a bootable option.Quote from: kota132 on January 23, 2008, 09:58:43 AM

Dell Diagnostics, at startup, by pressing F12, it's a bootable option.

Grab the one for your HDD...they are far more thorough.
