Solve : problem installing windows?

Answer»

Hi, I have an old p3, 733 mhz, 256 ram. Trying to install winxp, it always gets to within 10 min of finishing set up then goes to blue screen, with no warnings or faults, just a plain blue screen, I have to push reset then it starts set up over again, done this a few times now. Anybody have any idea why it would do this???
Also, i tried more than one copy of WINDOWS so its not that.
thanks.Any system with 256M of RAM will be a struggle running XP...anyone who tells you DIFFERENT is out of their mind.
Buy some more RAM...it's relatively cheap right now.i hear you, but i have installed on plenty of comps with 256 ram, it should still install, something else causing it, not sure what though. The Hard Drive may have become corrupted or may just be too small to support this O.S. What are the specs and how old is the H.D.? Is it new or has it had another O.S. installed on it? Pentium 3 is very old and also may have become damaged due to environmental circumstances or even human error. What does CMOS TELL you about your system? The CD may be damaged or a bad copy. Is it a genuine Microsoft install disk?
hey guys, thanks for replies, tried 2 different hard drives, same problem, and of course its a genuine copy of windows.
i do get a problem when it boots up, after it sees all the drives then i get a fault that says, "primary slave not atapi, press F1 to continue. But there isnt anything hooked up to the primary slave.
thanks, for help so far.
Sounds as if somethings funky with the ATAPI adapters...try re-installing the MBoard drivers.

Solve : NO SOUND-speakers OK?

Answer»

You are very WELCOME

My personal COMPUTER guru is Polish
You recognized my signature, huh? Yeah, I've been born in Poland (Krakow/Cracow), in US since 1986.
As for a sound card, just don't get the cheapest one (you know, cheap is expensive). Anything from CREATIVE LABS should do.Quote
Well, this much I know. I hit on a web page that had the rinky-dink kazoo MIDI stuff and it worked on both my Hanns-G monitor speakers and those big honking Altec Lansing speakers. But that was it. Every darn diagnostic I run indicates the hardware/software are working and CORRECTLY installed.

This leads me to believe it is a setting in Control Panel/Multimedia that is incorrect...
If the sound chip was bad you would have nothing.
Muck around in there for awhile and try different settings...Before you go out and buy a new sound card you should check the settings of the program you are using for music/sound. I had an odd problem with my sound card on my last computer and after taking it into the shop I got only 1 program that could produce sound and that was winamp3. Try looking for what audio device your program is looking for and if there is an option then try a different source. It's a long shot but give it a shot.

Solve : Windows Explorer doesn't read the contents of my DVDRW Drives?

Answer»

Windows Explorer will not recognize the media in my DVD drives (D&E Drives) but I can access the media by using the desktop shortcut for a game or using Windows Media Player to play MUSIC. When I try to copy music files to a CD using Roxio it doesn't see a default drive.(Doesn't see a BLANK CD) I checked the device mgr and it sees both drives with drivers. I tried to update the drivers but I get latest drives are loaded. The IDE ATA/ATAPI are DMA enabled for both drives.I downloaded the latest firmware from Liteon and loaded it. So I know the drives are good, the media is good the cable connections are good and the latest drivers are loaded. I did load [emailprotected] for XP this past weekend. I had the DVD drive for 2 weeks and it worked prior to that. I requested Hot Fix KB322389 from Microsoft but I doubt if this is the answer since the SP was loaded. Help pleaseQuote

-Run regedt32.exe from the CMD screen.
-Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D365-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
-Delete the Lowerfilters and Upperfilters lines from the RIGHT hand screen.
-Reboot.

Make sure you create a BACKUP of your registry before making these changes.

Solve : windows xp keeps turning on and shutting off?

Answer»

I am having trouble turning on my computer. I'll go to turn it on and the fans go real fast then it shuts off then it turns back on then shuts back off and this happens repeatedly, I have to unplug the computer to make it stop. What is wrong with this thing? Can somebody please give me some advice? To start with, re-seat video card (if you have one), and same for memory sticks (if you have more then one module, toggle them). Some thoughts on possible problem>>>

First see if your turn on button maybe stuck in, check for that. Also replug in any wires, for example take out the main psu cable and replug it back in, if you can check out the bios, reset it, make sure the bios battery hasn't died (its a watch silvery battery) buy a new one if its dead.
if you do have a bad switch see here>>

If it is the on/off switch the only COST around $20 bucks
Radio Shack should have them also, I believe there called a Uninversal Momentary Switch!

Or look here>>> http://www.frozencpu.com/ele-72.htmli don't think it from the cmos, but sure it's SOMEWHERE loose. re- connect everything and try to clean the pc.Make sure this is not an overheating problem, after you check vid card and ram RESEATING and Device Manager...Check your CPU temp and SYSBoard temp..If computer is running hot replace CPU fan and POSSIBLY Heatsink and DONT forget the thermal lube, Thermaltake is a good product.

Also, if you here faint clicks over and over corrasponding to the computer resetting, then your HDD or cable to you HDD is loose or bad or jumpers are wrong.

Solve : Problems booting into safemode?

Answer»

I'm trying to help my friend bypass his password that he forgot after he set it but I can't seem to get his computer to boot into safemode. When I do f8 at the computer start it brings up boot options but the only things I can do is select the boot device and then it boots into windows right after I select one. Is there an ALTERNATE way to boot safemode? I tried f2 and hold ctrl reading over some other peoples solutions but this is to no avail. So this isn't a PROBLEM booting into safemode...it's a problem of your friend forgetting his password ? ?
Just to clarify here...It SOUNDS like your BIOS uses "F8" key to permit manual selection of a boot device during SYSTEM startup. As you're aware, it is also used to invoke Windows Advanced Options Menu from which Safe Mode may be booted.

To invoke the Windows Advanced Options Menu SEE the following link:

Solve : Could I have a conflict on XP??

Answer»

I have an EMachines 2210 2.6 GHz Intel Celeron. but the M/board expired, so I renewed it with a Foxconn 761GXK8MB with a AMD Athlon 64 bit socket 939 CPU. I used the original (EMachines) OS disc to boot up & all was OK. However, the system shuts down UNEXPECTEDLY occaisionally, but I note the fans (PSU x1 CPU x1 & case fan x1) speed up prior to shutdown. My query is that I have Intel Pro Set loaded (from install disc) could this be in conflict with the AMD CPU? Is it safe to delete it? Can it BE deleted? What does it actually do? Could it be causing the overheat prob? Would an upgrade to XP64 bit be worthwhile? I hopeI have not transgressed any forum rules by asking these questions. Please help! Regards AlexIt could be overheating...

Did the AMD chip come with a heatsink? Did you use TIM?

TBH, the mixmash of intel/amd doesn't sound healthy, but let's see if we can't get you working...Hi Sid, I'm pretty sure it's overheating. If you mean by 'TIM', thermal silicon grease, Yes I did. What I did not mention is that the OS disc is the one supplied by the manufacturer, & I assume is not a full 'install' disc but a restore disc. That's why I asked if a new OS would be a better bet. Cheers AlexFirst things first...

Let's try and prevent it from over heating, so you can actually work with it.

Has the heat sink got a fan attached to it? Is it plugged into the mobo, in the right slot?

Any other fans on the case?

Chances are it is a recovery disk, but I'm sketchy as to what they actually include. My understanding was that they include the OS and the drivers/Sware to put the PC to the state it was delivered in.I would either disable the iNTel settings in the BIOS to run the fans at full throttle or check your new MBoard manual for how to change the default fan settings...
An AMD chip will not take very long to burn up completely.

I'm confused on how you did this Upgrade. Did you install the MBoard drivers after putting it all back together ? ?
If not i'm suprised the system runs at all as it is still thinking you have an eMachines board with an iNTel chip in it.

More Info...Thanx Patio. Yes there are 3 fans in total, 1 on the CPU, 1 in the case, & 1 in the PSU. I also set them to run at full speed in BIOS. I could move the tower as it is quite near a radiator, & in my work station, which would no doubt help here. When I fitted the MB I installed the drivers with the disc supplied with the MB, but was unable to boot up with my 'Restore' disc. It said something like 'files missing' so I took it to the local comp. shop, who returned it to me working ok. I think they may have installed an OS to replace the missing file then rebooted with my disc, but I'm not sure. I should add that it only shuts down very occaisionally, maybe once a week, sometimes only once a month. My main question is, would I be better buying a new OS, maybe XP 64bit? What, if any, would the advantage be ie 32 v 64 bit? (I don't do gaming etc.)Plus the original query, will running Intel Pro Set cause a conflict with AMD? What would HAPPEN if I removed it?Your guess on what they did is probably spot on...
But it will not hurt anything to re-install all the drivers from the MBoard again...they may have missed one or two.
When you are done with that shut down...wait a few minutes and power up...this is known as a cold boot.
Now go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager.
Expand all the keys that have a plus sign by clicking on them so it shows every system device and how it's connected...
If you don't see any devices with a yellow ! or ? next to them then all your device drivers are installed correctly and your machine should be good to go...

Now you can safely remove the iNTel software which may or may not be still controlling fan speeds. Use ADD/Remove software to get rid of it and you can also DLoad and run CCleaner and run the "issues" scan to clean out any remnants of the program...

This combined with moving it away from the radiator should help a great deal.

As to the OS question you will not see a great performance gain between XP 32bit vs. 64 bit except in the applications that are written strictly with 64 bit in mind...and Vista although designed to take advantage of this is a step up i've found it's not worth the extra layout of CASH on system upgrades and the time invested in the learning curve of a brand new OS...
So in short i would say stick with what you have because it 's been working for your needs and other than this overheating problem has probably served you quite well...

Others may chime in with a different opinion but this is how i see it
Best of Luck and as always keep us posted if we can assist with anything else.Hi, I did all you suggested, & noted that the SiS Utility tray was not loaded, so I did. Then went to BIOS & reset everything to Default/Optimized settings. As I exited Bios & Win was booting up....the *@"&*+ computer shut down!!!! I let it cool down for 1/2hr. STARTED up again & all was well. in fact it started so quickly I was SURPRISED! I deleted Pro Set & ran my Max Reg Cleaner, itcame up with over 7k entries to be deleted. It is so much faster I cannot believe it!! Only one thing now is that I cannot open Sis Utility tray, to check core temps/fan speeds. I will keep trying though. I cannot thank you enough for your brilliant responses to my probs. Very Best Regards AlexGlad to have been of Help...seeya around.

CBMatt suggested I start a new thread in this forum while he's unavailable to get some more help. I've had a lot of issues with the computer but some have been fixed. Below is a HJT log:

Also, whatever is on my computer is blocking my internet, I can only access it on Safe Mode with Networking, and it lasts about 10 minutes before I get cut off.

Also, my log in screen is not the normal welcome screen with the icons corresponding to your name, I tried to adjust it but I cannot access my control panel, it's blocked.

Solve : XP Pro Installation Error!! Can anyone help????

Answer»

Hi,

I have just been given an old computer that I want to get working again. It was given to me by someone who had problems with it for a while - the cpu usage would rise to 100 and back again all the time causing annoying pauses when using the computer. The last owner tried to fix it by trying to delete windows XP!!

He managed to format the hard drive, install windows 98 SE then try and install windows xp over 98. This is the problem I am now having:

I have a new copy I purchased of XP pro service pack 2. I want to install it but every time I try to install it this is what happens:

Unexpected error (1073725632) occured at line 1773 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.

this message comes up when booting from the xp disk and trying to start INSTALLATION. The weird thing is that if i boot from the xp cd from the E:\ it starts installation and gets to a certain point and then BLUE screen and says:

a problem has been detected and windows was shutdown to prevent damage to computer. Check for disk space if a driver is identified in the stop message (what stop message??) disable the device or check with manufacturer for driver updates or change video adapters.
Check with hardware vendor for BIOS updates disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing

I dont know where to go from here and why its saying this?? Any ideas on what to try anyone???

ThanksA quick Google search revealed that this problem has the same cause - RAM.

Maybe you should remove the RAM module(s) and carefully clean the metal contacts by rubbing GENTLY with a pencil eraser.

If it persists, one or more modules may be faulty.

It seems like you are discovering why the last owner gave it away!

Thanks, I will look at the ram now and see what I can do. I have another 512mb to try so I will see if that works. ThanksSome suggestions-

1. Be prepared for frustration!
2. If it has more than 1 module try removing one at a time (with the power off!)
3. In the BIOS, find and PERFORM "load fail safe defaults". (Somebody may have altered the RAM timing settings) You can load "performance defaults" later if you get the thing working.
4. Do not mix different types or makes of RAM.

thanks for the advice. Its fixed and I am typing from the computer that I thought was RUINED a few hours ago! Thanks for the advice.

Solve : MS Paint default file save type?

Answer»

I've been searching high and low and checking the windows regustry but I can't seem to find a way to change the default save file type in Paint. It comes up with BMP as the default but I want JPG to be the default, so I don't have to change it all the time. Any suggestions?Clik Here for the reg fix...it will be a zip file. UNZIP it to the Desktop and right clik it and select Merge.
Make sure to make a BACKUP of the REGISTRY beforehand.

Or you can simply read the regfix and do it using regedit so you know how to revert back to the original settings if need be...I LOOKED at the contents of the fix, but is this really to make JPG the default file save type for MS PAINT when you choose save or save as in Paint? It LOOKS more to be a possible fix to be able to export Jpgs. I can save files as JPG in Piant but want JPGs to be teh decault choice. I don't think, you can.

Solve : Can't play active content.?

Answer»

I cant play active content on my COMPUTER because I got a virus and it messed it up. Now when I got to Internet Options > Advanced there is no "Allow Active Content To Run In Files On My Computer" button.

Here is a picture, it seems like the 3 Allow options are gone. Can you please help me?

THIS IS MY COMPUTER:

THIS IS WHAT IT SHOULD LIKE LIKE:

Okay so you have run what? antivirus, have you made an ID of what virus it is. Here are some general fixes that will work with absalute results.

1. If you can not get any antivirus or software to Q the virus or remove it, then back up your critical data, reformat your HDD and reload...It's good to reformat and clean your HDD 1nce a year anyway. So take advantage of the oppertunity, I know it's alot of work, but it can correct your out of wack registry and make a heck of a performance increase. Escpecially if you have been loading and using this HDD for over a year. You might even want to go to New Egg.com or TigerDirect.com and buy an additional HDD and set up RAID 0+1..depending really on your situation. You didnt leave alot of info on your system, Oh yeh. In case your wondering I have my MCSE certification. So I'm not a blow hard after 14 yrs in this business..Good Luck

Sincerely,
[emailprotected]I have never bothered with the MCSE cert but i would argue against reformatting yearly just for the heck of it if a computer is functioning properly. They can be kept clean by good housekeeping.

As an MCSE professional what is The MS take on this. Are the happy to supply new auth. codes annualy? They never seem that keen to provide the key more than twice to me.I used Spybot Search and Destroy to remove it. Is there any way to get Active Content working again? Please help anyone? Some SITES ads are not working and its making them slow. I think its cuz they are using activex for ads.
I agree Metcaff. Running your Ad-ware SE by Lavasoft or HighJackThis spyware and addware scanners along with ClamWind or AVG antivirus and frequent defrag and chkdisc..is good housekeeping, but this computer is OBVIOUSLY not functioning properly, MS relation to this is they wrote the OS, I stated my opinion to help someone and it was not you...If you have a problem with MicroSoft, take it up with them. I was not talking to you...I have for many yrs BUILT, building, installing software and hardware, troubleshooting computers, so I need not justify my credentials. I know this z prob not just a trojan, sounds like a virus that started with the IE and still going...I could be wrong.Quote

I used Spybot Search and Destroy to remove it
If it was listed by Spybot, it wasn't a virus, some kind of malware, rather...
What Windows version? What IE version?

Solve : Computer won't recognize any USB devices?

Answer»

Hello, I really need help with this. I just bought a external harddrive and my computer won't recognize it. Here is the background:

My fingerprint READER and PRINTER worked fine through USB. I plugged in my external HD and my computer WOULD not recognize it. I read up on it and it said try unplugging your other USB devices. I unplugged all USB devices (except keyboard/mouse) and plugged in my external HD. My computer recognized it. I go to plug in my external HD again a few days later and it will not recognize it anymore. Now, when I plug my other USB devices in (fingerprint reader/printer), my computer will not recognize those now. Does anyone know why my USB's are acting up like this??? I could not FIND this problem on the forum.

Thanks!

MikeGet an externally powered USB hub.But I really don't think it is a power issue because they all worked fine at some point. My computer just won't recognize anything anymore. Nevermind...they seem to be working again. I just don't know why they work when they want to.

Thanks!

Solve : 3 XP CD's?

Answer»

have 3 XP Corporate CD's, all bought, with different serialnumbers.....it was a mess at my place which I try to do something about, but how can I find out which XP I have installed....with which serialnumber

XP, IE70, Sygate, AVG(both), 4200Mhz, 2048RAM, AMD Athlon You can download Key Finder from this site:

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/

Also, as far as I'm aware, the CD Key's aren't tied to the CD unless it's an OEM version (Even then, I'm still not 100% certain... someone else could clear this up?) so you don't NEED to BOTHER with which CD each key is for. With the Corporate liscensed versions you do...Doug Vitale....wow...thanks a lot...found it right away and the right one too...lol...that jellystuff is cool....great show...problem solved...lol.. This is an interesting subject.
I did some search, and I'm even more confused, then I was before...
Here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=98368
one poster says:
Quote

Corporate is avalible but it is for larger companies as you pay for a license for each copy you want. No idea if regular USERS can get it and the price. As far as I know it is exactly the same expect for the licensing bit.
and another one:
Quote
The "Corporate Edition" is a license scheme by witch an entity pays for a specific number of uses of the product. It is assigned one key and does not have to be activated. That being said however the corporate key was leaked and MS knows this so if you install service pack 1 it will screw up your computer

Then, here:
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t182625-win-xp-corporate-version.html
Quote
There is no such thing as the Corporate version of Windows XP.

Pirated copies of a volume license for Windows XP Professional have
been available from the warez sites for some time now, and these have
often acquired the nickname "Corporate Version" probably because the
original was most likely stolen from a CORPORATION or government.

These pirated versions are blocked from installing the Service Pack 1
Updates to Windows XP and also any subsequent updates for which
Service Pack 1 is a prerequisite.

So, I go to MS site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/default.mspx
and I can't see any Corporate version listed.

Can anyone clarify this?Corporate version isn't a version at all. It deals with enterprise licensing for Microsoft software. You buy the enterprise cd and get one serial number to use on all your computers. But you can only (legally) install it on as many computers as you purchased licenses for. It doesn't really cost any less, it just allows you to only have to keep track of one serial number instead of 50.I have a friend who said "All my Windows CDs have a file called serial.txt"... oops!

I happen to know that the corporate edition of XP professional can install SP1 and SP2 and security updates right up to the 29th September 2007 patch.

Hi all my main computer's hard drive broke so i bought a new ONE and trying to install XP PRO (dont know my system specs) when i press f8 to agree to the term's the next PAGE show's unpartioned space 6040MB
now when i press enter to set up WINDOWS xp on selected item it takes me to another screen saying it's made a new partion for window's to be created on then says "This partition must now be formatted" then has 4 option's

Format the partition using the NTFS file system (quick)

Format the partition using the FAT file system (quick)

Format the partition using the NTFS file system

Format the partition using the FAT file system

Now if i select the NTFS (quick) it says it's formatting then the next screen says:

Setup was UNABLE to format the partition. The disk may be damaged.

surely it cant be damaged as it's a new hard drive, so has anyone any idea's on how to solve this and install windows ?

Have you tried any other options?

I'd give the other NTFS partition option a go, and then try the FAT ones...

Any luck?Format the partition using the NTFS file system (not quick) should be used, since it scans for bad sectors using the chkdsk command (quick doesn't).i'll try it out and get back to you BroniIf this does not work you can DLoad and use the drive manuf. utilities to prep the drive for an OS install.Ok ive managed it GOT the OS on and doing the updates Thank's too all You're welcome

Solve : Slow bootup, etc even after format?

Answer»

I'll get cpuz and let you know. The weird thing is THOUGHT that right before I formatted it was booting up quickly. Do you think it could be the dvd rom drive? Cause half the time it works the other half it doesn't. So maybe when it installed xp it skipped some IMPORTANT files or something?DVD ROM shouldn't matter. Windows just loads its driver, and that's it. Even if driver is corrupted, Windows would tell you, and skip its loading. It can't have any impact on your Windows being slow AFTER boot is done. Here are images from CPU-Z

CPU tab

Cache Tab

Mainboard Tab

Memory Tab

Ram slot 1

Ram Slot 2
Did that RAM set up came with your laptop, or you played with it?
How old is this laptop?
I'm asking, because I can see this:
- Slot #1 - 128MB, PC2300
- Slot #2 - 512MB, PC2100
Normally bigger stick would go to slot #1, and also RAM speed is slightly different.
Did you check on Dell site, if this is right? My uncle bought it from craigslist. So I'm not exactly sure how old it is and it could have probably been MESSED around with before. But when my uncle got it, it seemed to run fine.Let me check Dell site...No luck here. What about you guys..any ideas? Were you getting disk read errors before the format ? ?
If so go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...right click on Primary IDE channel and select Properties...is it in PIO MODE ? ?
If so you want to switch it to DMA mode and UDMA if available.

p.s. If it's the original HDD you may want to visit the drive manuf site for the free diagnostics and run them on that drive to see how healthy it is...It is set on DMA. I am burning Hitachi's diagnostic program right now.
Does this problem have anything to do with the laptop not detecting the battery? It was doing this before and my uncle told me that he bought a new one and used all the battery power and the AC Adapter didn't charge it. I LOOKED into bios and it said the battery isn't plugged in.

Solve : Registry Entries?

Answer»

Hi from a newbe. Windows XP Home - computer very slow and acting strange. Have run many anti-virus & spyware scans and cleaned up a few problems (CWS.Oslogo). Found a great many entries in hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internetsettings\zonemap\domains - for what seems to be adware/malware including coolwebsearch, biz value, gooogle.com and many adult sites. What should be the legitimate entries in this key? Domains I go to? Should I delete the suspicious ones?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, maryrose1. Run free ESET Online Scanner at: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

Solve : log on to windows problem?

Answer»

Can not log on.
Message "The system could not log on. Make SURE your USER name and domain are correct then type your password again."
User name is Administrator, changed to another user but same message.
Password does not WORK, leaving blank GETS the message above.
In Safe mode gets you back to this same message.
This started after new monitor but same brand and type as old one. Try old monitor, same message.
Installed Windows CD and ran to fix any problems, still same message.
Using Windows 2000 PRO.
NEED HELP TO GET PAST LO ON TO Windows screen.Read the below site.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258289thanks for the link to Microsoft. Since the computer is set for no password, I guess I have to reinsall Windows.

I have tried the password used before but no luck.

Any other ideas!dude, i had this problem with my lappy top before...

try turning it on, then shutting it off ruthlessly(not the right way) just unplug it or something or hold down the power button...

then...turn it on again and it should give you a warning message saying how it was improperly shut down and run it in safe mode

if that doesn't work or you've tried that just tell me...

*note* if your current login does have admin privileges *note*

just hack it and CHANGE the password...

go to START, and hit run then type cmd and press ok or enter or whatever...
after it pops up, type "net user Administrator *" (without the quotes)(with the asterisk)(asterisk = *)
it'll tell you to type the new password, but while you type it won't show the letters...not even those
dumb ********* so you can't see what you type...it looks like your really not even typing...
just type it (no mistakes!!!) and hit enter, then it'll ask you to retype it...do it...press enter and it should
work, log out and try...if it says "system error 5, access is denied." then you're kinda screwed and you
don't have Administrator privileges

if you have any questions just reply or email me - [emailprotected] electricmidget,

Please don't add your e-mail address to each post. Remove the e-mail address ASAP to avoid spam. Spam bots can pick up these e-mail addresses and give you loads of spam.electricmidget,

I have tried shutting it off ruthlessly, no change.

I sould have Administrator privileges but does allow me to get into Windows to use start button.

Thanks,

Solve : Windows XP, Hard Drive Problems, Toshiba Laptop, Recovery CD: HELP!?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop without a floppy disk and it has a CD/DVD Rom drive.

The hard drive has been wiped clean. It does not have Windows XP on it.

When I try to run the recovery DVD that came with it, I get write errors associated with the hard drive. I am assuming the hard drive has issues. After numerous attempts, the recovery DVD will not complete its ghost installation.

I want to run a program to check and correct any problems with the hard drive and then format it. Which program should I use, and how do I boot into the program without a floppy and without being able to get into Windows XP?

Thanks! FredYou are in pretty tough situation, because, as you can see here:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Toshiba is the only HD maker, which doesn't provide HD diagnostic tools.

I did some SEARCH, and some people would recommend , either Hitachi tool:
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
(on the above SITE, you'll also find "CD Image", which will create bootable CD for you.

or Seagate:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/Thank you. I have also read about the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test and I can create a bootable CD with it. I plan on using it, but how do I NTFS format the hard drive after I repair it with the Hitachi tool? What OS are you gonna install there? Do you have a CD?
If so, it's bootable.
If not, you can create one:
http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/cdrom/The Hitachi tool would not work with my Toshiba hard drive.

Windows XP. Yes, I have the CD and it is bootable. It is a recovery CD. It tries to recover the ghost image on the CD and then fails due to a problem with the hard drive. I need to try to scan and repair the hard drive.

I need to know which program will enable me to scan and repair the hard drive???You tried Hitachi, already?
How about Seagate?Yes, I already tried Hitachi. The website I read said it would work, but it did not. I am not going to spend time trying Seagate.I am going to try a LINUX Live CD. (R)ecovery (I)s (P)ossible Linux rescue system. I am downloading it now. It has some tools that may work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_Is_PossibleRIP loaded up into Linux and I am formatting the HD into NTFS right now. It has not failed as of yet. After that, I will scan the drive for problems. I will update. The Linux Live (R)ecovery (I)s (P)ossible RIP Linux rescue system worked great. It loaded up and I used the hard disk tools that is COMES with. I repaired the drive, formatted, and used my Toshiba recovery disk. I RAN checkdisk in windows when I got XP loaded, and now everything is running great.Way to go, sir! I'm happy for you.
Good hint, too. Worth to remember!

Solve : upgradeing a old computer?

Answer»

I WANT to upgrade a old hp pavilion 742n with a new MOTHER board, cpu, memory, and video card. I want to keep the operating system. Hp help tells me if I change the motherboard I loose the o/s. Is there any to do the upgrade and keep the system

Ticked in New Mexico What operating system are we talking about?
I take the computer came with HP recovery discs?sorry, the o/s is xp home, no recovery disc just the recovery partition on the hard drive.Yeah then you're going to loose the OS if you change the motherboard. The BIOS on a standard motherboard won't be able to run the recovery partition. And EVEN if it could it would probably fail anyway since the computer doesn't contain the hardware the recovery system expects.
And the windows you ALREADY have installed on the hard drive is designed not to function if you make major hardware CHANGES. This is an anti piracy measure.

So sorry but I have to agree with HP here.thanks for the info, guess that is what I get for buying instead of building my own.I think you could build a new one depending on what you using it for ,for under a grand easily

Solve : XP Pro problem - High CPU usage intermitent on new install????

Answer»

Hi,

I've just fixed up an old computer (spec isn't too bad) and I have just installed xp pro with service pack 2. I keep having the same problem where the CPU usage shoots up to nearly 100% and around 75% for a matter of a second at a time then goes back to about 5% or between 2% - 7% when no programs are open.

This is a new install and no anti virus etc are even installed YET, it was doing this from the very FIRST time it started up in XP so it isn't to do with any downloaded updates. I have read on the microsoft website that some people had similar probs and there was a hotfix to download to apparently sort this out. The hotfix didnt work.

Is there anything I can try to see if i can find out where the problem comes from? Its very annoying because you will be typing and you have a delay then the words pop up etc but its intermitent. Sometimes its fine for a min or two then it will do this 10 TIMES a minute.

Can anyone help?

Thanks very much

RussYou could DLoad and install Process Explorer to see where the spikes are coming from...It seems to be DPCs - someone has just shown me a thread saying that this is quite possibly a RAM Issue maybe dirty contacts so I will clean them and try again.

Thanks for the adviceTry disabling the Indexing service.how do i disable indexing?

I have tried taking out the memory, cleaning it and using every port for the memory and it still gives me the same problems. I have tried taking out the graphics CARD cleaning it completely and cleaning all the contacts on memory and graphics card and still the same!

Does anyone think it could be hard disk or graphic card problems? Every time it pauses I notice a slighly different sound coming from the fan of the graphics card?? Could this be the problem?Follow patio's advice before troubleshooting your hardware.

Solve : Microsoft Visual C++ Debug?

As I trace genealogy on the internet, I often find it happens when I am searching through records, requesting and index. At times, I get the box that pops up but SOMETIMES the net just closes with no warning.

Can anyone inform me what may be happening or what information I need to gather to find out what is happening?

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't add the data you require.

I think you got some spyware installed and that's crashing your browser.

Solve : Saving data to cd?

Answer»

Hi
I am trying to save a FILE to my CD in my drive and its telling me that there is no CD in the drive. When I check the properties in the drive it says the CD is full. This can't be its a new CD and I tried 2. Is there a setting I am missing. Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks
JuliaWhat program are you USING to save (aka burn) the file to the CD?
Have you been able to burn CDs in the past?
If YES have you changed anything recently? Added or removed hardware or software for example?
What version of windows is this?HI
I am sorry I didn't give un enought information. I am using windows xp and yes I burned many cd's before. What i am doing is going into my accounting program and I save a copy to disk. Then I write cd to disk. It usually works fine. Just not this time. I don't recall changing anything.
Julia
What are you using to save the files to CD? Popular choices include Nero, Roxio, Ashampoo or the built in BURNING feature in XP.

You are sure the CDs are blank?
Are you using a brand of blank CDs that you have successfully burned before?Hi
If you are asking what browser I have its internet explorer. I am sorry I am not very good with computer, so I dont' always know the terms.
No I am wondering what program you use to burn your files to a CD.
Could you take me through the steps you do when you want to burn a file to a CD? I think this will clear it up.

Also please CONSIDER these questions.

Solve : Error Before the Window XP logo pops up?

Answer»

Well I think this is a Bio error, my cousin told me it MAY not be the hard drive and maybe the bio.
So I went Fry's electronics and bought a NEW harddrive , after installing WinXP it GAVE me the same error as the OLD harddrive I had.

So I'm guessing this is a bio problem.

the problem SHOWS.. INSERT BOOT DISK

I needs to insert my window xp boot DISC everytime I use the computer.
If I don't pit it in, it will not start up.

Any ideas?

Solve : fax in XP??

Answer»

Is there a built in fax PROGRAM in XP?

If so, can someone TELL me the program/ how to find it?

If not, can someone suggest what I could do to send a fax from my computer (without the aid of one of these printer/fax/all-in-ones); just my computer and an internet connection?

Thanks! Go to add/remove programs...add/remove windows components/put a check mark in Fax Services. Make sure you have your genuine Windows CD handy.

Alan <>< Yes, there is a built-in fax service in XP. You might NEED to enable it first:
http://www.thecomputertricks.com/tricks/000014/

To send the faxes, you STILL need your phone line, the XP service works like a fax machine. so you can send your faxes by different ways. One of them is using the print option: http://thecomputertricks.com/tricks/000015/index.html

If you want to send fax with your internet connection. You'll need to use the faxing services AVAILABLE on the internet. faxzero.com is one. or google "internet faxing"thank you to both of you

Solve : Screen resolutions?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I've got quite an old LAPTOP, dell INSPIRON 1.8, 768ddr, radeon 7500.

I'm struggling with the screen resolution, the only res I can seem to use is the maximum one (1400 X 1050) - which is FINE for just browsing / working, but when I want to load up an old game my system really struggles. When I change it to a lower res all it does is make the screen smaller (when i change it to 640 x 480, my desktop is just a few inches by a few inches - and the rest is just black)
The same happens when i change the res inside the game.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,Go to Dell site, enter your service ticket number, and download fresh VIDEO driver.has this laptop ever bben used with a projector??

If so i think i know how to fix it

Sorry i missed that...
Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if it's the PSU.

Cheapest way to find out if it's the culprit.
If no change post back with the results and we'll see about checking the board.

Solve : cannot get into some links sent by email?

Answer»

Friends have sent me links to various sites and when I try to open some (not all) of them it just produces a blank page and the word *done* appears in the bottom lefthand corner.
Other people have said that they can GET into them from their computers, however.
Can anyone help please?
~ judyPerhaps windows is blocking certain content which "may contain harmful or malicious content". This often happens to me when i use hotmail/live mail. However, when you open an email, you should be able to see some sort of alert saying that content has been bocked for your safety. Often these alerts come with some sort of link like "click to unblock content", or something along those lines. What email program, Windows version?
What happens when you copy that link, and paste it into browser's address bar? When I try to open the link in my email program (OE 6) I get an Internet Explorer (IE7) script error message. By the way, I have just disabled the debugging option in Internet OPTIONS for IE and other, but that MADE no difference.

The same blank page appears when I copy the link and paste it into the browser's address bar.hello

firstly go to options in outlook express and click the security tab, under virus protection select internet zone and tick the BOX that starts warn me when other applications............etc, under download images make sure the box blocking images isnt ticked

ok now go to internet explorer options select the security tab and make sure the slide bar is set to medium or lower then select the privacy tab and select medium or low on that slide bar

try these fixes first and we will see what happens if you are running a decent fire wall you should be SAFE to set all the above selections to low

get back to us so we can help you further if you need
See, if same page will open in Firefox.
Any pattern to the pages, which won't open?bartrob,
I tried what you suggested and nothing changed but thanks for your help.

Broni,
I will try Firefox and see what happens. Thanks.

Another thing, when I first open one particular email I get an IE script error...even before I get to the link. What does the message say?Sorry, I just accidentally deleted it after cleaning out my inboxes for the new year.

If the problem arises again I will let you know.

In the meantime thanks for all your help everyone and a Happy New Year
~ judyDid you try Firefox?Yes I did and love it!

Thanks for suggesting it Broni Most probably your IE settings are restricting it.

You can temporarliy change it in future to try itI'm glad, it worked for you

Solve : Run-time error '52'?

Answer»

Hello

I have a Run-time error '52': Bad file name or number. And I don't know what is causing it. Whenever I get the message box, it doesn't have any TEXT on top, from which program it is.

And it always messes with the graphics, my messenger gets a bit messed up, it also messed up site in my browser.

Now does anyone here have any idea on how to fix this?? or atleast how I could figure out whats causing it?

tnx in advance.

G.When does this error pop-up? Windows version?I have Windows XP2 SP2.

And the error pops up randomly. I guess a program is causing it at certain times, but I don't know which!Does it say "Bad file name or number"?Yes it does.Yeah. This is definitely some program error. You need to pay close attention, and try to notice what program you're using when it happens.Ok this on other thing that also happens after the error happens.

For instance I tried to run Firefox and it said its not a valid Win32 application.

Is it possible that something is wrong with Windows or could a program be causing such problems?

Go Start>Run, TYPE in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.I thought i'd share what the problem was.

The software that was causing the error was Bandwidth Monitor. I used Process EXPLORER, and when I clicked OK in the Error alert box, I saw that that process stoped.

Thanks for the help Broni.

Nice investigating JOB

Solve : Have problem after fresh install of XP?

Answer»

You might be able to find those drivers here: http://www.driverguide.com/
Although your comp manufacturers site would probably be the best place to download them from.I think I have the answer to my problems gang, I didn't do a format before doing a fresh install of XP. Obiviously there is a culprit hiding somewhere and a complete format and fresh install might be the answer in removing it. I Want to save My Documents, Desktop, program files and favorites but it seems hard to do. Obviously scanning doesn't remove them, just having fun doesn't either. Its not that hard just make sure you have all the data that you want to save BACKED up (like your pictures, music , and stuff like that). And make sure you have all of your program disks and your O.S. product key. Without the product key you cant REINSTALL Windows!

When you boot to the CD make sure you follow this order: 1. delete partitions
2. create a partition and 3. format your partitions. Just make sure you have that product key because it will LET you get this far but you wont be able to proceed! FORMAT=ERASE

if you need help with this post backThanks for the tips but couldn't saving things like My Documents, program files, etc reinfect my computer.? I don't have any music or pictures to save.If you save them and then burn them to CD/DVD you can safely scan them with all your protection apps without re-infecting yourself before you replace them...Quote from: patio on April 23, 2008, 06:44:05 PM

If you save them and then burn them to CD/DVD you can safely scan them with all your protection apps without re-infecting yourself before you replace them...

I thought about doing that but after AVG and Kaspersky found my system CLEAN, it doesn't make me feel too safe. That's what I'm going to do today though, it bums me not to be able to run my site from home.

Solve : Problems with screen/scrolling- Microsoft windows XP?

Answer»

I am also having screen problems with my windows XP. My pages are choppy, they break up as I scroll, the page will pause and scroll pause and scroll. I cant play games at all and its a pain to surf the net? Does anyone know what my problem could be? This happened right after I uninstalled some software. I dont know if this is related and how I even check? could someone help me?
Quote

This happened right after I uninstalled some software
What was it?
Did you try System Restore to the date prior to uninstall?
Any errors in Device Manager, regarding video card?
Did you try to reinstall video drivers? To be honest I dont REALLY know how to execute those operations, as far as a SYSTEMS restore_ how do I perform that? and as far as video drivers, Il be honest and say I have no idea.. im sorry :-(If you could tell US what you uninstalled that would help a lot.
Also could you please provide us with the hardware specifications of the computer or a brand name and model number. To be honest I took the wrap for my girlfriend, she uninstalled a number of programs and she does not know what specific ONES she removed. im sorry. Also I have an " explora GS28E" Made by Everex. Microsoft home editionIt sounds like she uninstalled the graphics card driver. Unless another graphics card have been added you can get the driver from here.
Download the VGA drivers, unzip it and run setup.exe.
To perform System Restore:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
On the Select a Restore Point page, click the CHECKPOINT (you think, it was before that programs uninstall) in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.I downloaded the file, it brought me to a folder.. How do I Unzip It and Run exe.?Nevermind everything is all set thank you very much.!Everything works?
