Solve : net connections?

Answer»

I recently got a broad band connection for my home pc. This is recently installed with a new hard drive, new 10/100 ETHERNET card, We were using the broadband to connect to the internet with no problems. I down loaded SP2 and ran the wizard to install Sp2. Thereafter i couldn't connect to the internet. I later found that the network connection to the ethernet card was disabled. So enabled the same. Now i got another network symbol showing at the bottom right of the taskbar, But this one shows network as enabled. But the YELLOW triangle which XP puts up as information is showing. says 'limited or no connectivity' how do i solve that?.
I couldn't figure that one. so decided to connect the MODEM to the USB port. Done that successfully, But the same symbol with the same information alert is showing. Can anyone let me know how to remove that. Now i can't connect to the internet at all. although the modem shows that it is conected. I tried to disable the network connection of the modem but it won't allow me to disable the connection saying it is not a plug and play device. don't know what else to try.
Thanks
The SaintIs there just one network adapter on this PC? And it is wored, not WIRELESS? What if you run connection wizard? This is a link for the 'Limited or no connectivity'.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=17d997d2-5034-4bbb-b74d-ad8430a1f7c8&DisplayLang=enGX1_Man,
Only one ethernet card is installed in the computer and another is on the board. The one on the board is not being used. No wireless
pcwizards,
thanks for the link just clicked on it and it goes to the download page update for SP2, will try download that and hope it will solve the problem.
Anyone with any other ideas.??
the saint. So the "ethernet card" you added is actually a wireless PCI adapter card then? Try DISABLING the onboard NIC, and then reboot and run the connection wizard again.

Solve : Severe virus problem?

Answer»

Help! I'm running Windows XP Pro. Have a virus that has set my desktop background with a black box on a blue background. In the box a message says "Spyware Infection" underneath is some blurb about windows etc.
I can't change the background either from "properties" or from clicking on one of my pictures and setting as a background all this seems to have been turned off PLUS I can't even do a roll-back ( clever ba^£*#ds). I've run AVG FREE and picked up several trojans (see below)
startpage.vm
PSW.LDpinch.SI
Proxy.ATC
clicker.AKW
Downloader.generic.KSH
Clicker.AKW (repeat)
Proxy.ATC (repeat)
I clean up these with AVG and in the morning they're back! When I fire up explorer I get taken to some spoof anti virus/spyware page and that's when all this crap gets downloaded. I managed to find that culprit and remove it and I changed my start page back to where I wanted to go but I'm stuck on this background and stopping the re-infestation. Can anyone help please?
These are NOT being cleaned up, or they wouldn't come back. Go to the virus section and download the spyware/adware/trojan freeware and do them and AVG in safe mode WITHT system restore off.If possible, would you please tell us how you acquired this virus, it's official name, and the URL of the spoof antivirus/spyware page that did the damage?

This is informational only, but it may save someone else from the same mistakes.

DellTake a look at the FREEWARE page and use the Anti-Trojan programs. (I use AVG Free Home Edition too and it is usually excellent.)

At the top of the page (scroll up) you'll find an on-line scanner.

I added the Google Search bar to IE to stop pop-ups and made sure that these two entries are dealt with...

In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" UNCHECK:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]try these programs to remove the crap

Solve : Access is denied?

Answer»

HI folks, just have a problem that I would like to throw at you.

I have xp home on my pc and would like to run xp media center on a different drive. So I went and got xpmc and tried to install it but i get this ERROR.

Setup was unable to retrieve or save INFORMATION about your disk drives. Access is denied

The error pops up after I put in the key and the first files get done installing.

I have tried everything and can't get it to work. I installed xp again to see if I would have the same problem but i didn't. So any ideas? How big is your HARD drive. My drive C is 40 gig, xp on that. THe othe drive I want to install xpmc is 15 gig.

I have 3 gig free on C and 7 gig free on the other. If you have upgraded your HDD with windows update you may also get a message something like Microsoft XP cannot delete the version on the HDD because the version on the HDD is newer than the version on the disk,I solved that problem with a third party disc[partition magic] which I USED to format partition C

.......ok

Solve : XP Problem: NTLDR is missing?

Answer»

I'm having a lot of problems. Apparently my mom's computer has been having problems; the Norton anti-virus stopped working and the computer developed hundreds of viruses due to an ethernet screw-up in the computer. We tried to send it to somebody, waited 5 MONTHS until today, got it back with no success, and when I boot it up, it says "NTLDR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" and I do, while inserting the WINXP Professional disk. It can't find the disk, all it says is "NTLDR is missing". I can't wipe it immediately because my mom has her 400 songs she wants to BACKUP and I don't have any floppies. Is the computer set to boot from the CDROM prior to the hard drive?Find another XP computer, FULL format one floppy in the XP computer and copy the (hidden) ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files to the floppy.

Put it in the problem computer and start up.

Doesn't this computer have a CD or DVD burner?

BOOT.INI Examples...

Control panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery Settings, Edit ... the boot.ini file (or edit a copy of the boot.ini file if it is for use in another computer) so it looks like...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[OPERATING systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

OR...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

If you have installed the Recovery Console on your boot drive there will be an additional line...

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Solve : OUTLOOK 2003 - READ RECEIPT IN LOOP?

Answer»

I have a customer using Outlook 2003 who sent a MESSAGE to another CLIENT on my 2003 Exchange site with a READ receipt on the message. After the message was read, the sender now RECEIVES another COPY of that read receipt every minute...on the minute. I fixed the problem by detaching the senders mailbox from the store in Active Directory and then re-attaching it.

Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this, or has anyone seen this before?

Solve : Help Recovering from Blue Death?

Answer»

This may seem LIKE a stupid question, but I'll give it a try...

Is there any way to recover all (or some) of the information I had lost from a sudden blue-screen-of-death / crash? I had a number of extremely important but UNSAVED FILES open, and the death screen popped up. Is there anyway I can find the information?

I've read you can find the core dump / PHYSICAL memory dump copy somewhere; and maybe with that backup or copy, I can ACCESS my old information? Or does it not work that way?

I'm feeling really desparate, and terribly depressed after the incident. I'll take any advice I can GET!

Thanks,

Solve : Links from Outlook Express routes to Firefox??

Answer»

After a TRIP to the computer shop my computer loads attatchment links from Outlook Express to FIREFOX now instead of IE. I know the guy switched it somehow to do this. He is a Firefox fanatic. Though I do use it mostly for browsing I would like to know where this setting is and it be my choice to use it.

I remember seeing SOMEWHERE about OPENING links to DIFFERENT pages but I'm dumbstruck and can't remember where.

Where can I go to change this setting back to opening them in Internet Explorer?

I hate to have to load it up and go back to the computer shop and gripe.

Thanks. On your Desktop, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options

Under the Programs Tab at the bottom of the window click Reset Web Settings. Check the box "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" if you want your system to check each time you open IE.

This will change your default browser to IE.

DellThat took are of it.

Thanks much,

Solve : Uncompressing files enmasse?

Answer»

*sigh*

So, I've searched, and searched and searched. I'm sure some of you have heard this tale before.

I used disk cleanup. I let it compress old files.

So.. now... I have an undeterminable amount of files compressed on my computer. In particular this problem is severely affecting certain programs.

Going through each folder and selecting the files to uncompress them is not only time consuming, obnoxious, but doing it thoroughly is nearly completely absurd an idea. I've been doing it, and I've SPENT hours doing it.

Please tell me there is a program somewhere out there, or some -way- to simply uncompress all these files at once. Surely there is, I mean, windows can compress them enmass rather effectively I've unwittingly found, why is there no solution to undoing that horrible deed? Is there one? Please help.Check in your windows help file & type in the keyword 'uncompress' it should show you how to do it using the 'compact' command.

Too BAD your OS is a secret because it stops us RESEARCHING it further for you.Windows XP ProfessionalNaturally I'm using W2K but check your help file anyway.

Mmmm, well, got it running now... so hope it works. ^^

Thank you very MUCH for the guidance. It LOOKS as if you can uncompress using wildcards too.Try this CLEANUP and look at how to remove the Compress Old Files registry entry. And make sure that you don't have compression set in the drive properties...

Solve : Xp Home to Pro = No sound?

Answer»

I've updated from xp home to xp pro but now i've got no sound. I went to add new hardware and it said:

Aztech2320 compatible PnP Audio
This devide cannot start (Code 10)

Is this why the sound isn't working? How do i get sound? Thanks
Grant:

According to Microsoft, you need to update the drivers for the sound card:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q125174/

Do you know how to do this?

DocI spent ages looking for those codes! Cheers.

Yeah i know how to do it but cant find an upto date driver for it. Where can i get a driver for it? Grant:

One of these links might have what you need:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-51,GGLD:en&q=Aztech+2320+site%3Aaztech%2Ecom

God bless,
Doc
Thanks for the link but still cant get one that works.

Also on sounds and audio devices properties it says there is no audio device??
Type DXDIAG in the run box......this will show you what sound you have.......the driversall website has sound drivers......

maybe you need to install a new sound card......fussy stuff winxp pro.....

Type hcl list in a net search engine......to find out if your old sound card is approved.........by bgates......conman of the world....In the dxdiag the name is Modem #0 Line Playback. But the id and the drivers fields are empty.
I couldnt see if it was approved by BIG bill or not??That sounds like a wave device for your modem, not your actual sound card.
This link will take you to their downloads page just go to the sound card section for your model.

http://www.aztech.com/download.htm
To be sure DLoad and run Belarc advisor and it will tell you which one you have.

Make sure you remove the device first in control panel then re-boot and point to the driver dload when Windows asks...

patio. Make sure that your sound card is properly seated. When mine fell out of the mainboard, after a move, it gave the same symptoms.

Here is a quick way to find DRIVERSXP PRO DEVICE MANAGER ERROR CODESPatio- it says Aztech 2320 Compatible PnP Audio (WDM) is installed but there is not a choice to download that on the aztech website.
My computer hasnt moved at all so can see the sound card coming out of place. Is that an old MACHINE or have you just added a new card? I didn't know Aztech still made equipment, but theyy were used in the past on HP's and Packard Bell (a long time ago). If this is the case there may be no current driver for it. Is it a PCI or an ISA board? (Sorry, you may have to open that case aftere all. Sometimes THINGS get fouled, but there may be a BIGGER issue.)

Solve : Wireless Networking Help?

Answer»

Hi Everyone!!

I have a problem and i'm not to familar with networking. I am goign to my fathers in a couple weeks...and i'm taking my desktop computer.

Computer Origninally Windows ME now Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon 1.3Ghz
32bit

My step mom has a computer that is HOOKED up to broadband internet and my brother has set up a wireless router 108MB for his computer. But they wont let me get on eaither. So i decided i'm going to take my own computer. I'm needing help though on what to get. I can install a PCI CARD or if a wireless adapter is compatable with me than i can easily install those. So if anyone can help me figure out what kind of wireless adapter i could use that would help alot. I like to shop at newegg too.

I know this is probably alot of useless things you don't need to read about but i'm trying to word it all out so that it will be easy for someone to understand and not have very many questions.
For a desktop system probably the easiest solution would be a wireless PCI card.
I've had good luck with both NETGEAR and Linksys, although Linksys tends to be a bit pricier.
Is he going to GIVE you access to the wireless ? ?Cause you'll need that info to connect and configure your card.Double post, check your other one.No Wait Fed ! !

I told him in the other one to check this one...or did i tell myself to check the other one and reply to this one ? ? Or maybe the other one came first ....i'm sooo confused.
I am planning on setting up a wired, two computer network.
Internet connection and printer are all I really need to share.
Do I need a router or is a switch sufficient.
Cost is similar, but the router is a beter long TERM solution. Thanks, I will get a router then.

Solve : background not showing?

Answer»

i got some spyware and it turned my desktop into a html. i got rid of all of it (i think) but now i cant change my background. if i go into properties to CLICK on a different background they arent clickable and the small box is frozen under the desktop tab.Why do you think it is all cleaned up if the computer is not functioning correctly? How did you do it and what did you use?i used spy sweeper and it came up with a desktop spyware file. i DELETED it and recent scans SHOW no spyware files. One thing is not usually enough. I WOULD try Ad Aware, SPybot and Ewido, and thena good virus scan as well. AVG Free works for this as well as the online scanner at www.trendmicro.com Just do a google search for these other items. They are all free.

You should TURN off system restore and then do all scans in safe mode. Once we are sure you are free of infestation, we can proceed.

Solve : cannot finish thourough scan?

Answer»

I have WINDOWS me and cannot finish a full scan on machine nor will it complete a defrag run thru, thanks for any helpHave you tried doing these tasks in SAFE mode or from your ME Start-Up Diskette?

A:\>scandisk /all /surface

It takes about 1 hour per 10 GB of drive space.

USE CCLeaner to clean up the drive first of all and then re-boot.

You can also use DELINDEX on your bootdisk and type...

A:\>delindex

To see if this will move any more junk after using CCLeaner. Delindex will also run a registry optimisation.

And you can use DISKEEPER LITE which is the same as the defrag on XP and made by Diskeeper Corporation.

I used ME for some four years before CHANGING to XP on the same computer.

Solve : how to automate chkdsk.exe?

Answer»

How can I automate checking of my c:? C: contains my op sys, Win XP Pro. The following BATCH file works, somewhat, but I still have to reboot the computer myself. I then run the batch file from a Windows Scheduled Task. d:, e:, f:, g:, and h: are all data drives.

echo y|chkdsk c:/R
chkdsk d:/r
chkdsk e: /r
chkdsk f: /r
chkdsk g: /r
chkdsk h: /r

Is there anyway to automate the reboot? Will the other programs that are running shutdown nicely?

If not, I could add a pause for a last line to leave the window open and remind me to manually reboot the computer.

Use Diskeeper 10 Professional and schedule a boot-time defrag with chkdsk and defrag the paging file and MFTs at the same time.

This is a better WAY to do the maintenance in my view.

Diskeeper has a 30-day evaluation period and I think that the program is worth buying for the Frag-Shield FEATURE alone.

You could set the scheduled task to run your batch file at Start-Up.Diskeeper Lite has everything except SCHEDULING, but i agree with Mac...it is worth owning.XP Defrag - IS - Diskeeper Lite.

Then I pressed the reset button and my mouse worked but not the keyboard, so i dicided to restart my computer. Then i left my computer on and let it load but now when it gets in too 30 second of loading it shuts down saying a Windows serious error that i cant fully read because it shuts down realy qucik and restarts the computer and keeps reapeating its self. Is there any way I can stop this from hapening? Could it be a virus or what?

I cant contact microsoft becuase it asks me for a windows XP serial which I cant find out with the Computer shuting down every time.Old post........been re-posted......?You can get the XP numbers from the authentication sticker pasted to your computer or from the original packaging. If the OS was preloaded on your PC, you should still have a sticker, otherwise contact the manufacturer, call MS or get a legal copy.

Solving problems that are seemingly random or intermittent in nature can be difficult. As a start, try SHUTTING down your system. Let it cool down for a while with the POWER disconnected.

When COOLED, plug in power, start back up and note any strange behaviour. Where/when/how does it fail?

For further help, you should provide some basic info about your PC (model, peripherals, OS, etc.). There are at least 9 variants of Win XP. Which one are you using?

The more detail you can provide, the easier/quicker it can be to solve your problem.

Shut it off and take the left side panel off. Start it up and see if all the fans are running.

Unplug everything, earth yourself on the metal CASING and hold the power button down for ten seconds then re-seat the RAM modules and check for any loose wiring, plugs, cards, etc., leave the side panel off and start it up again.

Will it stay running now?

Have you had any problems with any CD drives?

How about the wireless keyboard and mouse, are the batteries OK?

If you have PS/2 keyboard and mouse on the computer you are using now, try them on your other computer.

Solve : my pc keeps rebooting itself??

Answer»

I've had my pc for about a year and half and it has so far been a very stable machine. However, the other day, after exiting a game, the machine froze then rebooted itself. Now I can only get into windows using safe mode.
I get a brief blue screen with writing on that disappears so quickly I can't read the message.

Sometimes the colour is weird on the monitor and sometimes, although not in safe mode, the monitor will shut down saying - no message, going to sleep? Even though the hard drive is still running, and then the monitor will start up again and I can see windows is still running but as soon as I click an icon, the monitor will shut down again?

Now I've checked for viruses and malware and nothing came up. I haven't loaded any new programs recently.

Can anybody help?Try re-seating your RAM modules and other cards first of all, and blow out all the dust and then make sure that the temperatures aren't too high.

Run MemTest86 on your RAM overnight and run the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette over the drive.

Click on the link below for more info.THanks Mac,

I'll look into this now and let ya know how it goes.

CheersIn safe mode go in your display options > settings. Can't quite remember how you do this but move the resolution slider. It shouldn't move off 640x480 but that's ok. Now press apply and it should ask if you want to start Windows next time using failsafe monitor settings. Click yes. Now try rebooting.

Then go back to display and reset it to a resolution more appropriate, such as 800x600 or 1024x768.

HOPEFULLY your monitor should now work. But for your crashing problem...

1. Update direct-x
2. Update/reinstall graphics drivers
3. If still not working, then go to display > settings advanced, troubleshoot and move the hardware acceleration down a slot each time until crashes stop. Unfortunately lowering this slider may REDUCE game performance or stop them running at all, but hopefully should prevent crashes for the meantime.

Let us know what happens.ok, done all the re-seating and dusting stuff - no change.

Have SCANNED the hard drive and no probs with that.

Couldn 't get the memtest programme to work though? I followed the instruction and unzipped it to make the boot cd but it's just ignored when I swich the pc on or REBOOT?

Any Ideas? You will need to set your cdrom as the first boot device in bios then re-boot with the cd in the drive.

Also CHECK your device manager for device driver problems. Thanks Fed,
the CD drive is already the first boot device?

I do have a conflict in device manager which I hadn't noticed before. One is with my audio interface the other is an unknown ? device?

Not sure if this helps but on the odd occaision when my pc boots up correctly, in nomal mode, in windows xp my audio is fine, however when I have to reboot and go in, in safe mode, I have no audio?Uninstall the problem devices in your Device Manager, re-boot and allow XP to re-detect, you may need drivers for this.
Do them one at a time.

Are you sure you downloaded the correct memtest, that memtest site can be confusing.

Solve : Missing or corrupted files?

Answer»

Hello NEW MEMBER here,
Today when I turned on my computer I had a black screen and I had the following messages:
Missing or corrupted files C:windows IFSHLP.SYS
Windows system VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the windows LOADER..

I have no idea what happened. I shut it down normally last NIGHT.

I have Windows ME and I use NSW and ran all my scans early this week.

I have one more question, how do you get a computer out of safe mode? We have tried doing a system checkpoint, and many other things that don't seem to work. I don't know how to get to that screen that says that you have 25 seconds to select safe or normal mode... Any help on these matters will be greatly APPRECIATED.

Thanks,
Redd Do you have a WIndows CD to reinstall with if you need to? I sense there are MANY problems with that machine. When did it last work right, and what has happened to it?It shut down normally night before last with no problems. I have a cd that came with the computer, but I have never had to use it. I haven't had any problems with it in the last year or so.
I have Windows ME. I also use Norton SW and Spybot S&D. I run weekly scans and it always comes up clean. Can someone tell me what to do about the missing files or what I need to type in for the windows loader, or at least something helpful to me, before I have to take it somewhere.
Thanks,
ReddWinME has system restore. Have you tried it?

Solve : Buring DVDr question?

Answer»

i have a 7.6 gb iso FILE of a DVD, and i want to burn it to a DVDr. However, i dont have a DVDr disk that is big enough for this.

Are there any programs that will ALLOW me to compress this so it will fit on a 4.7 gig single layer DVD+r?There are many.

One you can try is DVD SHRINK. Download here: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

I use it and it works well.

Dellthanks! Is there anything else?

Thanks again for that link. I LOVE this siteYes.

I also use Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic. It was bundled with my DVD writer, so I'm not sure how to best get it separately.

Roxio's software will compress an ISO file to fit on a standard DVD-R/+R, as part of the burning process. It doesn't GIVE you as MUCH info or flexibility as DVD Shrink, but it works good.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out. I'd like to set up a letterhead for the company i work for. I know that in office WORD, there is a wizard to set it up for us. However, this is what i would prefer it to do.

When you open up that letterhead.doc, a popup dialog box appears and prompt user for entering the company name, attention, addresses and date. Once those fields have been entered and the user click ok, those details are placed on theirs appropriate spot that has been pre determined before.

I think to do that, i NEED to write up a program. is that right?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance and look forward to HEARING from you.You can do this easily with Excel, I've used it to make company invoices.
Tabbing between the fields, it even does sums for you.
You can also lock it so that no one can alter the parts you want 'fixed'.Hi Fed,

Thank you for your reply.

Ok, so it can be done in excel. But if i want to do it in word, do you know how?

Solve : Microsoft Outlook's Calendar Auto Deleting and acc?

Answer»

Whenever I am sent an invitation attached to the calendar, it is delivered automatically to me Deleted Items folder and in turn Outlook automatically sends an acceptance.

I have checked to see if there is any rule SET up to that effect and found none. Can anyone offer any ideas please?Sorry i am a new outlook user any advice here would be greatly appreciated
I'm guessing that you don't like what your Outlook process is doing? You'd also like to know why and how to change it?

Quote

Outlook automatically sends an acceptance

The Auto-Accept feature is found in Outlook as follows:
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Calendar Options.
Under Advanced options, click Resource Scheduling.
You will see the checkbox for “Automatically accept meeting REQUESTS and process cancellations”.

Quote
Deleted Items folder

Microsoft has identified a problem with the Outlook calendar and its integration with e-mail. Events such as meetings or appointments can "disappear" from the calendar after they have been accepted in SITUATIONS where an Outlook account is accessed from more than one "location." Examples of this may INCLUDE accessing one's Outlook account from a computer and also a HOME or client computer, or even a mobile device - such as a Blackberry or SmartPhone. This can also occur with a shared Outlook account, such as occurs with many executives and their assistants who have delegate access.

The problem occurs when a meeting invite is accepted on one computer, but is then deleted from the Inbox on a different computer. This can lead to the accepted meeting disappearing from the calendar.

Hope this answers your questions. If not, provide more detail on what you're doing, how you're doing it and what you're using.

Before you hit the power button to turn off your computer, you can can always bring the Taskbar up by pressing Ctrl-Esc.

Solve : Computer stuck in Safe Mode?

My computer is stuck in Safe Mode. I have tried numerous times to reboot, holding down the F8 key, choosing 1 - Normal but have had no luck. I'm at a loss please advise as to what I should do.It would be easier for us to help if we had some idea of what you are using.

Operating System
Peripherals
Recent changes, additions or failures
and anything else you think might help troubleshoot your problem

You say you have had trouble choosing Normal Mode. Do you mean you can't move the selection to Normal or that when you enter Normal it doesn't respond?

If you can only boot in Safe Mode, then let it finish completely booting in this mode before you RESTART your PC.
Let us have the information from above and we can do better than guesswork as to what you can try next.

Solve : microsoft me / dos game?

Answer»

I have windows ME and I have a game the runs in dos (the 7th guest). I thought I had installed it correctly using ms dos prompt. But when the game loads to the menu screen (an ouija board) the screen and music freeze. Also, when it freezes the only way I can get back out is to alt cntrl del. Is ME just not compatible with dos games? Can anyone help?No it is not, as a rule. You can install REAL DOS on there, and IF the partition is 2 gig or less, and IF your sound card is supported, and then if you install Windows in some fashion you are set.

It is easier with something like Partition Magic.

Pretty cool, huh?ok so i guess how do i find out all of the if's you have mentioned? i have no idea what a partition is or how i find out the difference, or what sound card i have? Is partition magic a program i can download? Or is that sarcasm? i am supremely computer illiterate and any help you can be would be hugely appreciated. thanx so much. and if u have im the name is auntmanna. No don't do IM and never will. Partition Magic is a program but it is not free. There are others too, you can google for them. BASICALLY you NEED a section of your hard drive (2 gig or less) to format and install DOS (have to have DOS floppies though) and then you need to have a driver for your sound card. If you have a new computer at all, these will not be AVAILABLE.

The cost really gets prohibitive, so you may be better off buying an older model computer with a version of DOS and a soundcard if you are determined to play this game, or others of that era. Think Pentium 1 or so, with a real soundblaster card. I have such a machine that I use for this purpose and it WORKS great.

dl65 If you are using XP Pro, then you can use Active Sessions in Admin Tools under Users/Groups I believe to view who is looking and at what.

A quicker way is to open Task Manager, select the processes TAB and then tick the box on the bottom left 'Show processes from all users'. Doesnt list the files but at LEAST you can see what they are running. No matter how those computers are networked you have to have administrative rights to see what others are doing.

Solve : XP Pro locks-up after Profiles set.?

Answer»

Dell 4100 came with ME and I since did a clean install of XP Pro. That was 8 months ago. This past WEEKEND decided to SET Profiles for my family. The problem is that the machine/software REFUSES to "log-off" at random times. I look at my "running programs" (C-Alt-Del) and find no prog running. Other times the "login and log-out" work just fine.
Is this a memory issue? I have 512.
I have Panda PLATINUM 2005 and SP2. All update installed.
The computer was running great before this.
Why the hang-ups?Do you have spyware and adware scanners in place? If not try Ad Aware and Spybot (free if you google) and run in safe mode. Let us know what you find.Or, you could also tap at F8 in boot-up, and enter 'Best configuration'GX1_Man,

Did the safeMode boot and found 3 objects via SpyBot (FastClick, Win. Sec Center AV overrride and Win Sec Center Firewall override). AdAware SE found 17 objects.

Thanks, seems to have done the trick.Speedz,

I don't see "Best Config" on the Boot options page. Just Safe mode at the top and a listing of other options.

This IS a DELL after all...can do much that way.

Thanks.lol. I didn't mean best config. I couldn't remember what it was called. 'Best last known good configuration' is what i should've said My mistake.

One more thing I cannot GET to the support page at microsoft. It is probably better to slipstream SP2 with your XP CD and do a clean install, update and MAKE a basic drive image, and then install your other programs afterwards and make another drive image.

I still haven't been able to get sp 2 working. I tried having a friend download it to his computer so that I could just transfer it to my computer using a flash drive.
I was able to get it over to my computer but it never really installed. I looked in my add/remove programs list and there is a bunch of sp 2 stuff but the program never actually ran. What do you think is happening?

P.S. I don't remember if I mentioned that my microsoft update wouldn't let me install "microsoft installer 3.1"

dl65

Yes I bought a new Norton package and I have successfully installed it after successfully removing a worm.

And yes I can now access my registry.

But I still can't access Microsoft support. If Big Bill's MS support system thinks you are running an illegal copy of XP, you may or may not be able to get updates for the OS. REGARDLESS, they will not install.

There are a lot of reasons why MS may think your copy is illegal (it is illegal, too MANY changes to hardware, not validated/authenticated within a certain time, etc., etc.).

If you feel your copy is legal, you can contact MS to make sure it is authenticated. A toll-free number should be listed on the Authentication sticker on your PC or on the original package.

Same ISP I have had for years.

No changes to hardware or software.

What is happening now is the only strange behaviour.

Microsoft IE browser.

No firewall on this win98

As mentioned above I have: Ad Aware SE Personal, and spybot search and destroy

I have 2.68 GB LEFT on a 4 GB HD

192 MB of ram

at this moment of computer time I am using 52% of resources

Not sure where I security settings are but will look around.
Lets see: went to internet options and clicked the security tap and it is set for medium.

Based on your answers, I'd SAY you should be in good shape.

You might want to try reinstalling IE or trying another browser such as FireFox (free download) or Opera.

It's difficult to keep up with all the fixes and issues with IE (almost daily). Personally I've given up the effort.

Solve : stop code error c000021a....grrrrrr?

Answer»

short history: I have recently installed SP2 on a windows XP computer and also set it up for a home network, I am not sure which one (if any) caused the problem.

It worked fine last after I did both of these, but when I went on the computer this morning, it displayed a message that said, "shutting down" and after it shut down, I could never boot windows back up. It goes into a loop where it turns on, displays a message saying something like ERROR during logon process, fatal error c000021a.

I cannot boot it in safe mode or from the CD. I can get into RESTORE mode from the CD but don't know what to do from there.

any suggestions?try going to www.google.com and type in c000021a and press enter.

You'll get lots of hits like this one:

and it takes about 1 second. You should try it!Obviously that is the very first thing we tried, thank you for the wonderful idea - none of the posted things online worked as describedSorry, most people here do not even try to google for an answer. What do you think the problem is, and what did you try that did not work? Can you load the Recovery Console and run - chkdsk /r - ?The problem is fixed. The computer finally read the system restore disk, and I reinstalled windows. The odd thing is, after reinstalling, all of the old program files remain on the system. I have done this process several times on different computers, and have never seen this happen. I deleted the old windows system folder (except for some temp files that wouldn't go away), and removed the old system from the boot file, but the program files from the old system still remain. I am afraid that some of the adwire files are still on the system. Does ANYONE know a quick way to remove these, or why they would still be there?

Thanks EVERYONE for your help! You have to boot with the Win98 boot disk and type in

format c:/u/s

After that reinstall Windows. You will have a clean system

You just installed over the top of your problems that time.

Thanks again. It may be your video card.
How are your computer temps? Have you cleaned it inside, lately?
Tried to re-seat video card? Tried it on another computer?PCB Temp on card is 49C. GPU is 60.8C. These are not while playing anything though.....I cleaned the inside of my pc just last week, and I did reset my vid card.Quote

GPU is 60.8C. These are not while playing anything though
This is rather hot. Athlon 3200 64-bit max. temp is listed at 69-70C, so I can imagine what your temps are while playing.
I'm not a hardware guy, but you have some heat issues, which most likely causes problems with your games.
I think, you need to take some action right away.
Installing extra fan?The most likely cause of these symptoms is network lag. You can reduce network lag by taking a few of the FOLLOWING actions.

If you are gaming on a Wireless connection, purchase an ethernet cable and connect your computer to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of your Wireless Router. You will need to then Disable your Wireless connection to ensure that your computer is using the faster and less lossy transmission method.

If you are connected to a router through an intermediate device such as a switch or hub, remove the intermediate device by connecting your computer directly to your router.

Ensure that your router is not prioritizing packets from another service when bandwidth becomes critical, your router firewall expects packets in the port range of your game, and that your NAT (Network Address Translation) settings on your router are compatible with your game.

Ensure that during gameplay, no other bandwidth intensive applications are running on your computer or another computer on the network. These could include file sharing applications, streaming video or audio, other games, and may even include background activity from computers infected with spyware, malware, or viruses. Ensure that your computer and computers on your home network are free of malicious software.

Ensure that you are not connecting to the internet through a proxy server, or via any sort of internet anonymity software, and make sure that antivirus suites or security software on your computer are not analyzing network traffic, as this will cause significant delay in game responsiveness.

When selecting a game server to connect to, try to either Ping or Traceroute the game server (by going to Start Menu->run->cmd and then typing ping your.game.server (or your game server's ip) or traceroute your.game.server). The Ping and Traceroute COMMANDS will display the AVERAGE packet transmission TIME and loss ratios for a connection from your computer to the server you are targeting, which will give you an indicator of the application's perormance while connected to that server. Tolerable ranges for MMO gaming are a ping average of 1-300 ms, for FPS gaming 1-100 ms, and for RTS gaming 1-600 ms. To find servers which will more than likely meet these requirements, try to select a server which is geographically closer to you than other servers, and try to avoid servers with more players currently connected, as server load may also be an issue. To see which servers are geographically closer to you, google a service called I.P. Geolocator.

If you are connected to the internet through a DSL or Dial Up connection, you may simply not have a stable enough connection to play this particular game. Also, some AOL subscribers will have difficulty with gaming due to AOL's network structure. If you are not sure whether or not your connection is stable, you can google a service called Internet Speed Testing, which will check your upload and download capacities empyrically, and tell you your average packet loss statistics.

If you are having trouble finding any of the services or processes I mentioned, feel free to reply or PM and I will try to find you a link or more detailed instructions.

P.S. Based on the hardware your computer is running, I sincerely doubt that the game is beyond your computer's capacity, but which game or games of yours exhibit this behavior?I wonder what does internet connection have to do with poster's problem, unless there are on-line games. Please read the fourth word of the original post.Oh, I see...my bad. I apologize. Its all good I think I have found the POSSIBLE problem. I downloaded the ATI Tool Tray and have noticed that as my card is heating up, the fan on the card doesn't increase speed to move the heat away. I just manually increased fan speed and it seems to have cured the problem. I know it's probably just a short term fix, and will have to get a new card, but it has prevented the problems. I wouldn't have thought it was my connection....my ping is normally around 60. Thanks for all your responses, as your thoughts led me in the right direction to finding the problem. You may want to just leave the fan at full throttle and shop for a replacement fan in the meantime...
I added a new fan to a card around XMas and it's still going strong so i added some life to it...That sounds like a great idea...I didn't know you could just replace a fan on the card. I imagined them being a little more proprietary than that...Thanks for the info!Yep.
As long as the mounting holes line up all else you need to check is it should meet or exceed the RPM's of the OEM fan...ball bearing ones work best but are not available in all size formats.
