Solve : service packs?

i have Micro-Net Framwork 2.0 service pk 2-----3.0 3.5sp1 and windows service pk 2 listed under control panel add and remove--do i need all these?
my computer says i have 2.0-- What do you mean do you need them? If they are already installed just leave well enough alone. The .Net frameworks are not cumulative as the Service PACKS are...
Each ONE is unique and does it's own job...

Hope this clears THINGS up.

Solve : no device driver selected?

Quote from: bigbass on September 23, 2009, 02:27:52 PM

This is a old PC, P11 450 MHZ Memory 640MB HD 13.5GB, I tried to use xp by it's self to see if it would boot, no good...

Quote from: bigbass on September 24, 2009, 11:06:43 AM
Objective... To install an OS system, I have Win98 disk witch is oem, I have a win98se witch I used before and also have winXP Pro corp..witch I had on this
pc...

1. Make and Model Number. What is the make and model number of the computer, if brand name; otherwise make and model number of motherboard (e.g. "Gateway G6-350") ?

2. CD-ROM Drive.
a. Is this the original CD-ROM drive ?
b. Have you successfully booted from this CD-ROM drive in the past (on this computer) ? From which CDs ?
c. Is there more than one CD/DVD drive on the computer ?

3. Windows XP CD.
a. Which CD do you have ? "winXP Pro corp"... I would expect an "original" Windows XP Professional CORPORATE CD to boot...
b. What Service Pack level is it at (e.g. RTM, SP1, SP2, SP3) ?
c. How "exactly" is the CD labeled (more precisely what identifying information is written on the exterior of the CD) ? Also include anything like "VRMPVOL_EN".

4. CD Boot. You said the XP boot was "no good". What did you observe?
a. Does the CD-ROM drive light come on briefly during system startup?
b. Does the CD-ROM drive light come on and off for longer intervals as if it is reading the CD? Do you think system was reading the CD?
c. What informational and/or error messages display during CD boot attempt?
MAKE---MICRON Electronics
Model--SE44BX2-P11450-MT--ATX
Mother Board--512KL2 cache
Original CD Rome drive--Pioneer DVD 6.0x w/Software Decode

Yes have booted from this CD before--Microsoft WIN98--OEM
Yes--Have a HP CD-Writer Plus # 8250i

Not going into all the CD that I have that worked at this time,I will use
the WIN98 CD for this install and if I need to upgrade I'll use the other
CDs

Service pack level was SP2
CD Labeled-Microsoft Windows 98 For DISTRIBUTION with new PC only for product support contact the Mfg of your PC

Yes--the light comes on briefly
no it doesn't come on longer intervals and when it tries to boot is says
no valid CD ROM device drivers selected, device driver not found OEMCD001

Made new boot disk, WIN98se OEM from Boot disk still would not boot with WIN98...This sys has been formatted as one drive C: I did run a service scan on C: no bad clusters,no problems with this drive....
I think it's reading the drive until it can't find the device driver to load Win98
as it loads the diagnostic tool in drive D:

Thank you

1. Operating System. You intend to install Windows 98 (First Edition) from your Microsoft WIN98--OEM CD.

2. Boot Device. If you've booted the Win98 CD before "directly" from the original CD-ROM drive, that's the path you should take. "CD-ROM" should be listed in BIOS as your first boot device. This means you would not be using a Win98 floppy boot disk (so it shouldn't even be in the drive).

3. CD-ROM Drive. I see no evidence that you're successfully reading the CD. I'd SAY you aren't even accessing the CD-ROM drive, except I'm not sure what the light flicker on system startup means. I think BIOS is searching IDE bus looking for the presence of devices.

Start with the POST diagnostic screen and verify the CD-ROM drive is properly identified by the BIOS and note how it reports location on the IDE ports. Location probably indicated on screen as:
o PM - Primary Master (IDE port 0 - Master)
o PS - Primary Secondary (IDE port 0 - Slave)
o SM - Secondary Master (IDE port 1 - Master)
o SS - Secondary Slave (IDE port 1 - Slave)

Post how the diagnostic screen reports what device it finds on the IDE channels (ports). Maybe someone has suggestions on how to configure CD-ROM drive (IDE port and drive Master/Slave/Cable_Select jumpering) so BIOS boots from it.

To display POST diagnostic screen during boot, enter CMOS setup and "enable" Boot-Time Diagnostic Screen from Boot Menu. While you're there "disable" Quick Boot Mode. Ensure First Boot Device is set to "ATAPI CD-ROM Drive". Save changes and exit. The PC would not boot anymore so I put in the microsoft win98 boot disk and ran fdisk and then format, left the boot disk in and re-started the pc with the win98 os and from the point it would not boot into the os...

The cd rom is listed as the first boot and the H/D as second...

I guess you are right in that the cd rom is not working or I should of been able to boot into win98..

I'l go into the BIOS and look at what you want to know..

ThanksIs the floppy drive listed as the "Third Boot Device" ?

I'm not positive you have a "bootable" Windows 98 CD. I'm taking your word that you have "directly" booted to this CD in the past (without the assistance of a boot floppy).Hello,

The floppy disk is the third boot device

I don't remember if I booted with the WIN98 by it's self, but I did use the cd to install at one time...

First boot is ATAPI CD ROM Drive....I'll get back to you when I get the other INFO...

Thanks
I enabled Boot time Dig screen, disabled Quick Boot, save and exit
boot pc and the only thing that came up was P11 450 640 Ram than
it flashed WIN98 screen and went to C: prompt.....

The pc didn't give me what you asked for...!!! or I'm doing something wrong....

Thanks
From what I understand I should be able to boot this PC from UBUNTU CD
witch I have as it has it's own drivers, I tried booting from Ubuntu and could not boot...I don't know if the cdrom is bad or the H/D is bad, I would think
if the H/D is bad than I wouldn't get anything on the screen..I don't know...

Thanks

BigBassIf Ubuntu didn't boot it's the CDRom unit...OK, What I'm going to do is use the HP CD Writer Plus, thats in the computer
and remove the CD Rom, set the writer to master, plug in the cable, make sure sure
the BIOS is set to boot from the writer first, boot with the UBUNTU CD and see what happins...

Thanks

BigBass
:WELL" It didn't work, I don't see why as the light on the CDROM is lit and as I understand it Ubuntu has it's own drivers so it should of booted, I don't know what else to do with this PC, is there something that I didn't do right..??

Thanks for your help

Solve : Winmgmt Event 4 :- "failed To Load Mof ... While Recov"; 51 new wbem\*MOF files?

Answer»

This only happened once immediately after reboot FOLLOWING removal of Comodo FIREWALL 3.5.
This event has never repeated after many reboots.
I have not seen any subsequent errors of any sort.

Does the absence of repetition indicate that Windows succeeded on the next reboot,
or that Windows has given up trying to mend a fatal wound ? ? ?

There were 4 off such error events within 1 second, designating these *.MOF FILES
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V1.1.4322\ASPNET.MOF
C:\AC30D119A40F2C8C8708A20576\I386\LICWMI.MOF
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V3.0\WINDOWSCOMMUNICATIONFOUNDATION\SERVICEMODEL.MOF
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V2.0.50727\ASPNET.MOF

I later found that starting a few seconds before that, and finishing a few seconds after,
there were 51 *.MOF updated time stamps in C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\AutoRecover.
Comparing Acronis images of C:\ taken before and after removal/replacement of the Firewall I see :-
4 ORIGINAL *.MOF files that retained timestamps of last year and before
7 original *.MOF files that were halved in size as they were modified
44 brand new *.MOF files I have not seen before.

Do all these extra *.MOF files in ...\wbem\AutoRecover indicate a major disaster ?
Does the absence of further WinMgmt event 4 errors show recovery without failure on the next reboot ?
Does the continued presence of all these *.MOF files show that after recovery Windows was too lazy to delete redundant files ?
Or has it left it all for me to try and recompile or something ?

I am hoping to be assured that all is well,
or to have a QUICK fix that is sure to work,
otherwise I could play safe and restore the system via Acronis image with the old Firewall,
and then try to be more gentle as I replace the Firewall,
and then repeat all the other updates and adjustment done in the last 7 weeks.
I do not want to repeat the last 7 weeks, but I would rather do that than wait until I discover what is badly broken,
and then have to repeat everything I might be doing next year ! !

I am using XP Home with SP3

Solve : toshiba laptop not booting?

Answer»

hi all, ive got a toshiba laptop with a broken screen, when i link it up to my tv and turn the laptop on it will load up but then the tv will go blank (no signal to tv) but i can get onto windows in safe mode does anyone know whats wrong??
cheers lee1. Enable VGA Mode. See if the TV will display when you boot using "Enable VGA mode" from the Windows Advanced Options menu. This will boot Windows into normal mode using current driver for video (in a reduced VGA mode). If Windows comes up, then you need to "set" the display properties to values the TV monitor supports (or GUESS what - no display!).

Three display properties to be concerned with are "refresh rate", "color depth", and "resolution". Not sure what a TV monitor supports. Perhaps others could opine... Or you could research on internet....

Maybe start with refresh rate of "60 Hz", color depth of "16", and resolution of "800 x 600". Be especially careful with the refresh rate (I think that's the only thing that would damage the hardware). If successful, you could crank up the color depth and resolution changing one item between REBOOTS until the system fails to display (then back off the last PARAMETER set).

2. Windows Advanced Options Menu. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing bar display).

When the menu comes up, use the up/down arrow keys to select the LINE item you want.

3. Safe Mode. If you're in a hurry, you could "reset" display properties to conservative values TV monitor might support from Safe Mode and reboot.

4. But Then... Since I've never connected a TV monitor to a laptop, I don't know what video signals and/or display properties it needs.

How does the laptop interface to the TV? Which laptop port do you use, what type of cable, and where did you get it?

5. Broken Screen. Broken how? Physically? Or just doesn't display anything?

Solve : Dell Vostro 1510 Laptop problem?

Answer»

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help. I have a Dell laptop that will not boot up. This is the message that I get.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent DAMAGE to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is PROPERLY installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software mfg. for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced STARTUP options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

STOP: oxooooooED (ox89B19658,0x00000000,0x0000000)

I am not able to start in safe mode. It keeps coming back to the message above.

I am running Windows XP

Anybody have any ideas?

are you sure you have everything plugged in correctly you can have some things in backwards

I never heard of anything like this before i don't see why they wouldn't let you bypass this at your own risk
maybe it's a virus

i never seen my computer tell me so much before on how to fix a problem

it will just show me the problem error when i start itGo into BIOS and load the fail safe or default settings. If that doesn't work then you will need a windows cd.

Do you have your windows CD? If so boot to recovery console. If not download the recovery console here: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso

Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.

Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Then follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp
starting below this picture:

Hello JJ,

Thanks for your response. I do have the Windows XP installation CD that came with the laptop, however; nothing happens when I insert the disk. It takes me to the same error page. Am I doing something wrong? Change Boot Order to CDROM-1st.Sorry, but how do I do that? Start the computer back up and tap F2 while it is starting. This will take you into BIOS. In BIOS you want to look for BOOT ORDER or BOOT SEQUENCE or maybe even just BOOT. You want to set your CD drive as the first boot device. You usually press the plus and minus keys to move your devices up and down in the boot order. Once you have your CD drive set as the first boot device you want to insert your XP disk into the CD drive. The Dell disk will probably say "Operating System" on it. Now exit setup and SAVE CHANGES (F10).

The computer will reboot. You may see a message that says: "Press any key to boot to CD". If you do just keep tapping a key as the computer STARTS. You should hear the disk start spinning in the drive and then see a blue screen with the words XP setup near the top. It will load a bunch of files and then you should see this screen:

Press R to load the recovery console. Then follow the steps from here:
http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xpJJ,

I was following the INSTRUCTIONS to the letter, when all of the sudden my laptop just shut off!! Now it won't even power up Is it time to start planning the funeral??

Jim Remove hard drive and see if you can enter BIOS. If you can, get a new hard drive. If you can't, computer is probably dead and not worth repairing. How far did you get before the computer powered off?

Try taking the battery out and running it with the power cord plugged in.

Solve : PC will not boot; stuck in setup..?

Answer»

I haven't booted from a CD because I haven't had a burner available to me but I do now. Going to try ES-Tool again.I suspect the onboard diagnostic tool you ran before is ES-Tool, but go ahead and run it from the CD, anyway. It will probably give the same result:
Drive 0: SAMSUNG SP2504C - Fail. Return Code: 7
Look for a new hard drive, 250GB SATA HDD is about $50.Roger that.. if this HDD is unrepairable, I need to find a way to pull my data from it.Hard Drives are not repairable.
May not be possible to retrieve data if it's DEAD unless you have $1000 to spend on a Recovery Service (businesses that do this for money). It's a very labor intensive procedure and there is no guarantee. They actually remove the "hard" from the hard drive and install into a different hard drive and then try to retrieve all the data they can find.

Lessons Learned: you can't have too many backups of data.

What you do next:
Install new hard drive on SATA 1 (Master)
Install Windows and PROGRAMS on new hard drive
Boot, reboot and insure all is working.

Install old hard drive on SATA 3 (Slave)
Hope BIOS RECOGNIZES old drive and insure Boot Order is SATA 1, 1st
Hope Windows recognizes old drive and assigns drive letter.
Copy your data from old drive to new drive.
Make backups of your data.
Sounds like a plan. I appreciate the ASSISTANCE, y'all! If I'm looking at your Dell XPS710 correctly, you may not have extra SATA power connectors, so you might need 1 extra SATA data cable and 1 SATA power adapter for connecting the old hard drive. Buy them when you get the new SATA hard drive, they're cheap. You've got 6 SATA data ports and 1 IDE data port.

Solve : Keyboard locks a few minutes after turning on?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop.

I can turn it on and get online okay but after 15 to 30 minutes I'm unable to type anything, either as a a web address, on a webpage or even in a word document. If I'm on Internet explorer the system BEEPS for every keystroke made but nothing is entered. If I hit the "f" key the File menu dropsdown, the "a" key the Favourites menu dropsdown, the "h" key the Help menu etc.

I can continue to navigate online but only using the mouse, not the keyboard. I've used Firefox and the same issue occurs.

If I reboot this fixes the issue for another 15 to 30 minutes and the cycle continues.

Another issue is that a lot of icons won't open by double clicking. I have to right click and open. I've checked the double click speed in my mouse setting and they're fine.

And sometimes when I click on dropdown menus, eg File, Favourites, start the drop down box only appears for a micro second then disappears.

I use the Windows firewall and AVG free anti virus.

Two days ago I ran Dell PC Restore by Symantec. This reverts the system to it's factories SETTINGS. After running Dell PC Restore I uninstalled McAfee security suite (preinstalled but out of date) and immediately downloaded AVG anti virus. It hasn't corrected the issue.

Any help please?Your system might be infected. download malewarebytes and do a full scan, and see if it finds anything, it will also tell you if certain settings are hijacked. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Try an external keyboard to see if it exhibits similiar behavior.I've downloaded malwarebytes and have performed a full scan on all drives. the result I've pasted below.

unfortunately the issue is still occurring. any other advice please?

I've had this issue before try these ideas:

1) Try to take it out (Keyboard & mouse) and put it back in.
2) Try another keyboard & mouse on the computer to see if it's a computer related issue, or it's just that your mouse and keyboard are screwed up.
3) If in step #2, the other keyboard & mouse are working, then go buy a new keyboard and mouse for yourself.

I had to do Step #3.

Also, how OLD is your keyboard and mouse, I had to replace my 6-5-year-old Keyboard and 8-year-old ball mouse.

Good luck.

Solve : Cannot boot computer?

Answer» Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru and printing a reference copy...

If you've gotten this far you're 1/2 way home...

Remember you will need to re-install the Dell drivers when finished.
Enter the Service tag # at Dell's site and they will be all listed for you.Try a different IDE ribbon. This post could be a duplicate I am not sure...had TROUBLE uploading a file pic.

Anyways, as I said b4...you guys are the best. Out of 6 different forums I posted, this is the only one that showed any real interest...thaks allot for all your help.

Please see below for solution.

I decided to put aside the HDD issue and concentrated on why both the drives would not work. I knew they worked b4, and I also knew it would be HIGHLY unlikely both drives would bite the dust at exactly the same time, so I circled round in the bios for an hour b4 finding the trouble.

I THOUGHT that if the DRIVE is listed in BIOS that it must be configured right....WRONG. I noticed a tick beside the HDD (in boot sequence) but not against the others. I wondered why id this so? I also noticed that by pressing the space bar toggles between a tick and no tick. No idea what this meant but who cares...just try it. Exit and save and voila ... both drives work fine now.

Surely you would THINK that manufactures would make this most important step a bit more clearer to the inexperienced operators like myself. I mean unless you knew this you would NEVER of known that not having a tick (no box btw) meant the drives were disable for crying out loud. And the question has to be asked....how did they BECOME disabled on their own? I never did it. All I can think is Ghost had something to do with it. Might have disabled them as part of the restoring image so that there could be no interference, and when the crash came...well your guess is probably better than mine, but they would stay disabled I guess.

Anyway...problem solved and thanks to you guys for the help.

PS: anyone know how to close this thread now?

[attachment deleted by admin]There's no need to close the thread. If you want, you can add [SOLVED] to the thread title to let everyone know.

Solve : MS DOS function like ipconfig to get system performance specs??

Answer»

I am aware of MSINFO32, but I'm wondering if there is a MS DOS command similar to ipconfig in order to get system specifications?

I would LIKE for the system specifications to be displayed in the MS DOS prompt.

I would like to see at least:
CPU
RAM
BUS speed

Thanks for any insights. msd ? ?Is something that must be installed or something that is present by default on Windows XP and Windows Vista?

Thanks again for all your help.

Jason msdiagnostics as it's commonly known...
XP does not contain DOS per se so i don't know if it's still included.
It was included in DOS though.

What you are working in is known as the command prompt function...not DOS.

P.S. I just ran it in Vista...no dice.
Sorry.Whoops. I guess I did not appreciate the difference.

I guess I should have asked the following:

I am aware of MSINFO32, but I'm wondering if there is a command I can run from the XP and Vista "command line" similar to ipconfig in order to get system specifications?

I would like for the system specifications to be displayed in the "command prompt" window.

I would like to see at least:
CPU
RAM
BUS speed

Also, I would like to be able to run the command without installing anything.

Thanks for any insights. Why do you need it done this way when there are so many good utilities out there that will give you more info than you need to know ? ?

Solve : Problems starting XP Pro SP2 (fresh install)?

Answer»

hi, i have reformatted and installed XP Pro SP 2 from disk.

but the boot up only got until the loading screen where i can see that progress bar thingie.

but it does not go into Windows.

wat should i do?Most likely cause is a bad Hard DRIVE.
Second most likely is a dirty CD, or dirty lens in CD-Drive.
Or failing CD-drive.
Sick RAM can cause that.
Overheating CPU, DUE to improper mounting of fan.
Failing Power supply.

Easy quick test is to boot up a small version of Linux off just the CD-Drive.
It can run even with a bad hard drive. If it has a hard time mounting the Hard drive and reading the directory, it becomes obvious it is the hard drive.

Here is an article dated 2003 from IBM:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-knopp.html
The author says that Knoppix Linux on CD is a good tool to have.

Solve : Product Key and new installation?

Answer»

I've never heard a dfinitive answer to this question, but I'm sure this is t he place to find one.

I'm helping a friend with her computer and it will need formatted and a XP installation. Her computer is a Gateway with an XP Pro SP1 key on the COA label. She no longer has the restore disks for the computer.

Can I install XP with my Retail XP Pro disk and use her Key Code from her computer? I've never quite understood how Miscrosoft tracks the Keys or what the do's and dont's are regarding installation.

Thank you for any insight.

JimYes.
If it is a clean install there's no need to worry about the SERVICE Packs matching...
Only the version NEEDS to match.
This is perfectly legal.

Travel to Gateway as you will need to re-install all the drivers...MBoard chipset drivers go first. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear.

My friend and I thank you for your help and also the quick response.

JimMy Pleasure...GOOD Luck...and Welcome Aboard !You will have to call Micro$oft to activate the installation. You have 30 days to do it. It's pretty simple. Call them up and TELL them that the hard DRIVE crashed and you had to do a clean install. They will issue you a activation code over the phone.

Solve : Device Manager?

Answer»

Hi,

In DEVICE Manager I have a yellow question mark beside "Other Devices".
Opening this gives me "Unknown Device". In the "Unknown Device Properties"
window under the "Details" tab, there is a single entry showing an AVAST Anti-Virus thread.

Considering that I have previously used Avast Anti-Virus on my computer but no LONGER do so, can I assume that it is safe to DISABLE or UNINSTALL this "device"!?

ThanksYes.

Solve : Desktop Icons and Descriptions?

Answer»

This *censored* computer. I can see it's gonna get a good kickin' if it doesn't stop playing me up!
Used it this morning and all was ok. Powered it off and then BACK on again 2hrs later. Whoa, all the desktop shortcut icons were blimmin' enormous as well as their descriptions and were in rows across the screen.
Thought l'd sorted it via RIGHT CLICKING on properties/appearance/advanced and properties/appearance/settings. Then took ages to move then all around into the order they were before.
Powered off and restarted. The desktop has come back with all the icons and descriptions so small l literally NEED a magnifying glass to read them.
They are also in 4 columns to the far left of the screen, in no order whatsoever!
Any ideas as to what's happening as it seems my alterations aren't getting saved/retained?
Thanks
PS I've done the obvious (ie MBAM,SAS,Spybot,HJT etc. and all run clean)Try 1024X768....as a resolution.Hi there Patio,
Yep, that's what l set them to (which seems to be what they looked like
before all this started).
Have just rebooted prior to writing this and fingers crossed, it seems to be holding its own at the moment, with all icons staying where they should be.
Doesn't really explain why it was doing this in the first place, just another of lifes mysteries l suppose! Grrrr, blimmin machines!
Thanks for replying

Solve : sound/music playback on XP Home Edition?

Answer»

Yesterday while playing music from a manufactured CD, the sound, via my two speakers, seemed suddenly to slow, not unlike the effect of hampering a turntable upon which a vinly RECORD is playing. Im SHORT, the voice of the singer appeared to deepen and slowed down. The same problem exists whether the SOURCE is a CD, a music download., spoken commentary from a sorts event, and so on.

I would be grateful if you might offer some tests/checks that I, a complete novice, might readily follow, or even a REMEDY or two!

Thanking you in anticipation.

Tom O'ConnorWhat are you using to play these sources? Windows Media Player, WinAmp, Creative MediaSource, something else? And what version of the program are you using?

A lot of more recent versions of these programs have time SCALING, which affects playback speed, which might be the issue here. Thanks for the advice/guidance. As if miraculously, the 'fault' remedied itself and at the moment all is well. For your information though, I use Windows Media Player 10, as I also use iTunes, and Creative MediaSource Player as well.

Thanks for your time. I hope the problem here has been cured.

can you teach me how to put password in a folder??
because my DOCUMENT in school are always lost. or they deleting my doc.so that i want to put a password..thanx for your help...Windows can't nativity password protect a folder. You WOULD have to use a 3rd party program to do that. (Give me time to find one)

I want to point something out though. How are people deleting stuff at your school? I ask, because a LOT of schools re-image computers often to clean them of junk. This means they totally NUKE the data on the drive and reinstall a clean image of windows over it. Protecting a folder wont do anything for you.

You can use a service like Microsoft SkyDrive (free) to store your stuff, and grab as you need.in our school the teacher will not erase the files because it is important to all student and if they erase it they will get permission to the owner..some student erase the files in no aparent reason..they are bad..hmp..i get a low grade because of this..i hope you understand..tnx for your help..

MA few details would be of benefit. Please read this and include your hdd specs and what you've tried to do to reduce usage.

The usual suspects are: System Restore, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, Malware

To rule out the last, do a FULL SCAN with BOTH your anti virus UTILITY and EITHER (or both) MalwareBytes or Super AntispywareHey. I followed the advice re antivirus and malwarebytes. As soon as I downloaded Malware my computer went berzerk. The screen seized. For some reason Roxia MEDIA kept coming up. I ended up restarting and deleting Malware. What could this be? When you downloaded it or when you installed it? Boot to safe mode and run the scan from there.

taskkill /F /IM name of program.exe

START "D:\Program Files\name of program\name of program.exe"

end
Can any one help or tell me where I'm wrong on writting of this file.

P.S. If I do write at the line START "D:\Program Files\name of program\name of program.exe" without quotation marks it gives me an ERROR message.
Cheers. Try

Start "" "D:\program files etc....."

Or....

Thank you Dusty for the reply I fixed the problem and it works with first procedure.
It has worked with:
Code: [Select]Start "" "D:\program files etc....."

@administrators
You can close or delete this Topic.

Cheers.Good news, thanks for coming back to report your success.

Solve : Recycle Bin BSOD and External BSOD?

Answer»

TL : DR My computer BSOD's on Opening or emptying Recycle bin, and BSOD's on External Hard Drive Delete Attempts

My system specs are

Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Dual Core T2600 @ 2.16GHz
2 GB RAM

GPU ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
And I run two monitors The main one at 1920*1200 and the secondary at 1024*768

That's most of my information if anything else is needed to help just let me know and ill try to post it. Now onto the problem.

As the title states I am getting BSOD's. However I only get these BSOD's when I try to access my recycle bin or try to delete something that is on my external hard drive (which is a Western Digital 500GB My Book). I can however delete files from my C:/ drive and send them to the recycle bin, but when i try to empty my recycle bin either directly or indirectly through a third party program I get BSOD.

So at first i suspected maybe some maleware so i ran SpyBot S&D, A2 Free, Mc Crappy, and a few other Anti Malware Programs. They all came up clean no traces of anything. So then I thought might as well run a Registry Check and clean it, This did nothing either. Next I ran a Disk Check through the command prompt and rebooted so it could check my disk for errors. After waiting for it to finish it came up with nothing. Finally i suspected that maybe Terra Copy (a third party file transferring program that i replaced the windows default with) may be causing the problem so I took it to my college campuses tech desk where they wiped and reinstall a free copy of windows XP and the other school RELATED software that I use. I thought that this must fix it. The end all solution to fix most problems is a HD wipe. Wrong I get home boot up and try to open my still shown as full recycle bin and BSOD.

So this is where i am left now I have run out of all but one idea which is to take my Laptop back to the tech desk tommorrow and have them replace all the hardware in it. But I figured I would ask around on the internet before doing so to see if i could get some ideas as to what it might be. Thanks in advance to anyone that offers any thing usefull. What is the blue screen error?I can click on the recycle bin and find out for you real quick BRBHere's the read out

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.I said to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console.Well here lays the problem I don't have a windows CD since my windows license as well as this laptop and all the other software was provided by my college as part of the tuition. So if I want to run the recovery console I will have to bring it to the school's tech desk where they have a copy of the windows disk.

I was planning on going to the tech desk again tommorrow anyways since it doesn't look like i will be able to fix my problem and the hard drive wipe didn't work. Plus since I will be there I will just ask them to give me a brand new hard disk instead of trying to repair the old one, they don't charge me anything for it anyways.

But thanks for all your suggestions and time its really appreciated.Update:

As of 5 minutes ago i have just fixed this problem. For WHATEVER reason there was a file in the recycle bin that had characters that windows was unable to read or the file type was causing problems. Whatever the case this is how i fixed it.

Step 1: Locate the location of the recycle bin which for most XP users C:/RECYCLER

Step 2: Open the command line prompt type "cd C:"

Step 3: type "rmdir RECYCLER"

Step 4: Do not try to open the recycle bin yet as it will still crash

Step 5: Restart Computer

Step 6: Create a new test file called test.txt

Step 7: Delete this file and send it to the recycle bin, since the folder is missing and has no where to go Windows will recreate the folder and place the text file in it.

Step 8: Empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and clicking Empty

Step 9: The recycle bin should now be safe to use and problem solved

Hope this helps anyone in the future that has the same problem.

Alternatively you can download a program called "unlocker" google it. This program allow you to delete programs that are currently in use. Make it so you can view hidden system files and navigate to C:\RECYCLER through My Computer and delete it and tell unlocker you want it to be removed. You still have to make the test .txt to reform the folder.

Solve : Get rid of IE8 Skin?

Answer»

I recently uninstalled IE 8 because it wouldn't work with certain websites. I'm left with IE 7. With it I hoped the layout or skin would go AWAY. When I mean layout, it's the one where the big red x is right of the address field. I like the older style skin or classical skin. No setting in IE7 would allow me to back to the classical skin.

I launched IE7 directly from C:\WINDOWS\ie7\iexplore.exe and it used the classical skin. Great. But if I launch IE7 from SAY the command prompt, the new skin is used.

How can I permanently get rid of the new skin? I only noticed the new skin after I installed IE8. I didn't install any skins from other websites. I'm USING Win XP Pro.Are you sure IE8 is COMPOETELY uninstalled? It's not in Add/Remove PROGRAMS now, but it wasn't before. I followed the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700, Alternative STEPS, for Windows XP.

C:\WINDOWS\ie8 was empty, then I deleted the folder.

Solve : Reinstalled XP and now no icons?

How can you install an OS onto a drive without erasing whatever is on it? and without making a partition?
Reinstalling an OS SIMPLY overwrites the SYSTEM folder - it does not format anything or touch anything other than the system folder. And you do not need to create a partition unless it's a new hd.

The fact that you don't know these simple things leads me to believe you really might want to think twice before offering advice on these forums here is the whole story....My screen took a crap on me so I am borrowing one from a friend. When I hooked up the new screen i received an error message saying something like windows was unable to start do to a file being missing or corrupted. I located my retail Windows XP cd and put it in and followed the directions to install it...and here I am now.Quote

I think that answers your question to the poster. All Mssbrt2 really needs to do is make shortcuts to things and that's that. All he is asking is how to get all of his icons back on the desktop.Still doesn't help. Did you do a repair install (it would have said "repair the existing installation) or choose a new install? If the latter, I don't see how you could have installed into the same system folder and still have the same files - you probably did a parallel install and now have TWO OS's installed. OPEN Windows Explorer. Do you see a folder named WINDOWS and another one named WINDOWS OLD?Quote from: Boozu on September 22, 2009, 04:08:39 PM

I'm not trying to offend you or start an argument with you, but you're not helping. Please - let me try to help. Thank you.Quote

Would that still give him direct access to his old files? I'll let you help him I was just wondering.Yes, of course it would. But he will have to reinstall most programs for them to run.Thats what I thought. Ok I'll leave you be.all I see is a WINDOWS folderI honest to goodness don't know what you did or how you did it. But okay, you apparently only have one Windows folder (and THUS one OS installed). Do your programs all work? If so, lets get back to your icons question.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to \documents and settings \ your username \ desktop
That's where the icons for the desktop go. If you only have one desktop folder and nothing under another username with all the icons then yes, you have to drag all of them to the desktop. Sorry for this to have been so complicated, but I really needed to make sure you didn't install a second OS. And even if you did a repair install, the icons would have been there - so I'm still a little confused.hhmm...ok...I thank you for your time and patience....I'll just do them one at a time.Okay. Sorry it took so long to get around to the answer you were looking for.

Solve : Font folder won't open?

Answer»

Can you please give us the file name of the fonts you added.
Also can you give me the exact file location of fonts e.g c:\desktop\blahblah
Thanks we will endeavour to help..
The fonts I added were:

STJEDISE.TTF, Starjout.ttf, Starjedi.ttf, Stjldbl2.ttf, Starjhol.ttf, Strjmono.ttf, Strjmono.ttf

The location? Um...the first folder on the list after searching for "Fonts" (the one I assumed was the correct one) just SAYS, In Folder= Control Panel. The folder right below it that says Fonts, is in folder C:\WINNT. I can open that one and it has fonts in it, some TT but a lot that have an "A" on it with a .FON extension. I don't know if this is the one I am supposed to be looking at. The properties say, 75.0 MB (78,722,423 bytes) 60.2 MB (63,134,524 bytes) (I tried compressing the files to see if that was the problem) Contains: 274 files, 0 folders.

There's a couple other folders that say Fonts on them, C:\Program Files\Common Files, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox, C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\lib

We are talking about Windows XP here, I trust? Because the C:\WINNT folder is what you get with Windows 2000. I think if you are running XP your installation could be an upgrade from Windows 2000. (Clean installs of XP get C:\WINDOWS as a default) Dunno if this is relevant...

c:\winnt\fonts is where you should be putting them.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314960
I think you're right Salmon Trout, must be some sort of downgrade from W2K.That might be so. I GOT my computer from a friend who works at a COMMUNITY college after the motherboard on my old computer went dead.

So....where does that put us? I still can't get into the Fonts folder from Control Panel. There isn't anything in the File command to install new fonts. Does it work in safe mode?
Nope. *sigh* I'll probably have to have someone come out and look at it. Copy & paste your fonts into your C:\winnt\fonts directory.I did and they don't show up when I go into Word or Photoshop.I was afraid of that, try re-booting you never know your luck.
I suspect your OS is slightly crippled being from a community college, I've come across this type of thing before.
There's a lot to be said for having a genuine and complete OS disk from Microsoft.

Solve : What's your typing speed?

Answer»

Of course...she was a major contributor to WinME...Ah, yes they had to hire her so they could rush that out the door in a relatively functional but unpolished state.

Rumour has it she tried to correct the capitalizations on all the functions, changing for example "GetTextExtentPointEx" to "Extended_get_text_extent_point" which caused major headaches for developers and ultimately resulting in her not having permissions to change existing code, only add to it. This was also partially RESPONSIBLE for the NAMING, as she would often exclaim "what about me" at developer meetings, yelling "Me" quite loudly, and the marketing department often ate lunch right outside that particular meeting room, so it stands to reason that while they were throwing their cafeteria food at the pidgeons and otherwise goofing off they heard her exclaim "Me" over and over again. At some point one of them decided to do some work to earn their 20K a year job and lo-and-behold it consisted entirely of simply finding an appropriate acronym for ME.And thus was born the Beast that some never survived...56 was my lowest 72 was my highest after i take the like 5 times in a row my left hand pinky gets tired and i start making mistakes
i noticed i use it for q a z s and x and all the keys to the left of that like the cap lock shift and ctrl is that normal

last month when i took this test i was only like 45 to 50 i started this thread mainly because i wanted to improve my typing any programs are things i could try that you would reccomendOn second try, I got 50 with 10 errors. I believe typing tutor software can be helpful to anyone seriously dedicated to improving their speed. I can't vouch for any particular programs but might be something good at http://typingsoft.com/all_typing_tutors.htmMine was 39 WPM with 0 errors I type from 55 to 65 words per minute. In MS word, I typed this:
Quote

Hi this is a test DOCUMENT I want to see my Words per minute this is a test I am a real typer and I am fast and speedy and this is a document I want to see what is real because this is a test I don’t CARE about orange thomgoe
I type in a strange way.56 wpm. My fingers now hurt. 31 with 3 error. Never did learn how to type, I look at the keys when, I do. But I know standard java commands, classes/methods and also classes/methods made by me by heart. Wouldn't say i type fast during programming, though. I just think ideas fast, but stop to think the actual code

And thus ends a part of my auto-biography...

Solve : inspiron 6000?

Answer»

hi I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. The registry is corrupt and when windows loads I get "when trying to update a password, this RETURN status indicates that the value provided as the current password is incorrect" and it restarts on itself and continually does this. The recovery partion does not load when I press ctrl+F11 at the dell screen. I have a windows xp pro cd and can get into the SETUP. I can get into the recovery console but when it ASKS for a password and I type my password in it does not work, and when I leave the password field blank and press enter it doesn't work. so I can't really get in and fix the registry. There are no passwords set in the bios. I tried to do the repair by pressing enter at the xp cd setup and accepting the agreement and trying to repair it that way, no success.

My brother has the exact same laptop because we got it at the same time, his works fine and his recovery partion loads fine by pressing ctrl+F11. Is there any way I can use his recovery partion on his computer and copy it over to my HARD drive and do a clean install of my broken laptop as if it were the day I bought it by doing the recovery partion? I own a 2.5" to 3.5" Laptop IDE Hard DISK Drive HDD Adapter. So I can get into the hard drive and all its files.

So my question is can I copy the recovery partion files from the working laptop hard drive and put them into the hard drive that is corrupt? and where are the files on the good computer? where do I put them on the corrupt one? will this idea even work? should I go about fixing this in another way?

thanks for any help!Nope...
Won't work one machine to the next.does anyone have any ideas on how to fix the problem? For Dell systems, You can try to request whats called a Dell SRCD which is a batch of cds (or dvds) that would actually rebuild the recovery partition on the computer. Although your system would have to be in warranty if i remember it correctly for you to request them. If not ask if you can purchase it from them.

Guessing that its not, you'll have to reinstall the OS from scratch.

Solve : Can my power supply work this video card??

Answer» K this is my POWER supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182160
And this is the video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143178
The reason i ask this question is not because of the watts but because the video card SAYS that the power supply has to be a PCI express-compliant system power and idk if mine is or how to check if it is. Yes.
It has a PCI-X connector. You can see the 6-pin receptacle in the 5th pic.

You can see the 6-pin power connector in the 7th pic.You can but only with a single card, not SLI.
And you should have posted it in the hardware SECTION.

Solve : Computer won't start, need data fron hard disk.?

computer does not start. when i turn on the computer the windows screens appears with the increasing bar on the screen, then it goes to a safe mode screen but no action can be taken as the keys don't work then a blue screen (can't see what it says too fast) then it loops back the the beginning with the windows screen again. What can i do to bet data from that is on hard disk?Reboot. As soon as you see the POST screen start tapping the F8 key. This will take you to a screen that offers you a number of boot options. Select "Disable Reboot on Error" (I believe that's the correct wording - if not, it's close) and reboot. You should now see the contents of that blue screen error. Post it here.Laptop or desktop ? ?

can i remove the hard disk from my desk top convert it to slave and install on another computer to back up the data?
Yes.

That's what the Blue link in reply #2 is for.one last thing please, a technician that diagnosed my computer told me that the hard disk was no good, i believe with the boot SECTOR, and if i got a windows installed on a CD and get the computer to boot from the CD drive i can then back up from that same computer. do you know what windows is he talking about.

please foregive me for the grammar I'm using a brand new lap top that the shift key does not work and can't use the upper case symbols. will be taking to the warranty soon.Use the method shown above...the drive does NOT have to be running Windows properly to retrieve your data...
After that you can run the Free diagnostics from the drive manuf. site to see if the TECH was correct...
But retrieving the data should be the priority. The reason for the CD in the last post was so I can use the same computer. Either way than you for the HELP and will be doing what you said soon. Will let you know what the outcome was.do a thing!

connect another bootable device and use it to get the data and later format the disc or
insert the OS INSTALLATION DISC to the drive and select the repair option[THIS IS PRESENT IN XP INSTALLATION DISC]you gave me an idea. can i install windows on a 500GB external hard disk that i have and boot from it on the computer that doesn't boot up/ then back up on that same disk.
