Solve : flash drives?

Answer»
OK....I am not familiar with flash drives. How much information can you get off your computer? Or do these drives only work when retrieving certain files, one at a time. I mean can you download all your information on one? USB flash drives, like all storage devices, come in DIFFERENT 'sizes.' Most flash drives today are in the +/- 2 GB capacity and they go up to a capacity of at least 8 16 GB - maybe more.

They operate just like your HARDDRIVE does - the drive will SHOW up in Windows Explorer and you can save data to the drive or retrieve data from the drive.

What are you trying to accomplish? Quote
How much information can you get off your computer?
You should note that the most common Flash Drives are around 512 MB to 4 GB and modern HARD Disks usually average around 80 - 320 GB

Solve : Change dir to %random% named directory?

Answer»

Hello-

I have a product demo environment that I have created and want to be able to create directory STRUCTURE for demonstrating backup products.

The goal is to create a directory with a random name

md "e:\Corporate RECORDS%random%"

Result = e:\Corporate Recordsxxxx.xxxxx where x is a number between 0 and 32767

I want to be able to cd (That's change directory command for all you noobs ) to the newly created directory.

Is that possible? I only need to change directories once as I'm deleting that directory after a PERIOD of TIME, then rinse and repeat

Any assistance is appreciated.

Solve : windows xp (home ,pro,and media center?

Answer»

I tend to the school of thought that if it ain't broke don't fix it. For instance i have chosen the option to determine which updates i will download and install from Microsoft.I am currently using IE6 and have no intention to update to version 7.Now my question what are the opinions re installing the RECENT update of SP3. I have Sp2 installed and i GENERALLY do accept all security updates that seem to be never ending.However my research has found many complaints and problems (some devastating) that users have experienced after installing Sp3. I will be very surprised if there turns out to be a unanimous point of view but i would like some food for thought on this item. Thank you, truenorthMany people leave SP3 out.Hi truenorth ........ I follow what was what the old Fred Langa deal, LangaList - now Windows Secrets .... most useful reviews there. General consencus seems not too bad for SP3 but I CHOOSE still to not take chances - enough potential gremlins to make me shy of it - for at least some while longer anyways. I can't afford to have down time if avoidable.

I started out on my latest new machine with (Yuk) Vista - hated it but - hated it even more after SP1 !!! Messed up enough to matter IMO. So back to good ol XP Pro. I recall all sortsa prob's early on when SP2 came out for that.

I am like you - take in all security patches but these days don't even bother with the malicious software tool each month - takes too long! So - for me definitely - put off SP3 a good bit longer yet.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forgot to add ..... a comment re IE 6 and 7. I went in with both feet a while ago and went to IE7 - it ain't too bad overall - well as IE's go!!! Still reaches crash point at times. I prefer TABBED browsing too. I use "Multiple IE's" for checking web work and these cover for me 5, 5.5 and 6 usefully. Apart from that - Firefox reigns SUPREME anyways!
Solve : DVD drive doesnt play in my laptop?
Answer»
My HP Pavilion laptop is giving me problems playing DVDs. I dont know know why. I am running win XP. I put my DVD in, and nothing HAPPENS. If the light on the DVD doesnt COME on does it mean the DRIVE is broken? Or am I missing a driver?
The other problem is with my wireless connection. I have a wireless ROUTER, and my computer keeps saying that I am connected to it, but ..... I cant connect to the internet. Why?Data dvds or video ones? Try another dvd/cd first of all to rule out the media. Then I would go to device manager and uninstall the drivers for the dvd drive and restart windows. The drivers will be installed automatically again after you restart windows. See if that helps. If not then try and update the firmware on your dvd drive. If still no joy I'm guessing you will need a new dvd drive.XP should not need drivers for any optical drive...follow the advice above and also power down and re-seat the drive in it's bay.okay, Ill try reseating the drive in its bay, by this im assumiing unscrewing and rescrewing the SCREWS that hold the drive in place in the computer. How do I update the firmware of the drive?
It's most likely not a firmware upgrade you need as it was working before....
The drive should have a release button that ejects it...shouldn't be any screws involved on most laptops.
Solve : Easy CD Creator 5?
Answer»
Easy CD Creator 5 came with the Gateway I bought in 2002. I use it exclusively to save family pictures. I use the Direct CD format utility to format the data CDs and then I can save pictures on the CD. I've never encountered any difficulty once I learned the process. Now, however, when I place a blank data CD into the drive and bring up the Direct CD Format utility things go awry. The format page indicates that I have a blank CD in the drive; okay. I click on "Format" and it starts normally. Usually the formatting takes 30-60 seconds. Nowadays, the CD remains in the drive; clicking on "Eject" is useless. After waiting up to two hours, and the "whatever-it-is" is still going on, I need to turn the computer off and restart. I can then eject the CD. When I reinsert the CD and bring up the Direct CD Format screen, I read where it originally said "blank CD" now says "unrecognized data." Moreover, the Free Space and Used Space indicators both say "0 bytes." The Roxio website, featuring "Ask RoxAnn," has proven unhelpful. Is this problem familiar to anyone?Do you still have original "Utilities CD", if it came with your Gateway?Thank you for responding. I have two CDs titled "Applications," one titled "Drivers," and two titled "Operating SYSTEM." I have no CD titled "Utilities." "Applications" CD should do. See, if Easy CD Creator is there. If so, uninstall current version, and install fresh copy.Thanks for your suggestion. I had never UNINSTALLED and reinstalled a program, so I learned something. However, I'm encountering the same problem after the re-installation of Easy CD Creator 5 Basic. After clicking on "format" and waiting a few minutes the following message appears; "Illegal request. Drive reported an error with a command it received, please. You will not be able to read or write to the CD through drive letter access." And the hourglass icon remains on the screen until I close out the program. I know that some kind of process is going on when I try to close out because each step takes longer than normal. Maybe you have another suggestion or insight? Thanks again.You could DLoad and try CDBurner XPro which is FREE...
Try to burn with it and if that fails also you may be looking at replacing the burner.
New dual-layer burners are about 40 bucks shipped from newegg.com if your'e in the States.Hello,
Thanks for your suggestion. I downloaded something called "CDBurner XP," and tried that with no SUCCESS. The final message that I GET is in a BOX titled "File View," and it says "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." Truth to tell, I don't know what that means really. The CD comes out of the burner unformatted. And when I put the same CD back in the drive, instead of the original notation "Blank CD" it says "unrecognized data." And the only reason it comes out of the burner is because I shut everything down. If I don't do that the burner keeps the CD, the little light keeps flashing, and it can go on for hours like that. I've tried "Scan Disc," a function on the Direct CD utility screen, and the message I get is that Scan Disc cannot repair the CD because there is insufficient space on the CD. And this is on the CD that was, at first, blank, and then was notated with "unrecognized data." Curiouser and curiouser! I've placed other CDs in the drive, ones I've put family pictures on, and I can look at them with no difficulty; I can add photos to them and delete photos from them. Since I've reinstalled the software, Easy CD Creator Basic, I thought the formatting problem would go away. No luck. Any thoughts? Again, thanks for your responses.CD/DVD burners have two lasers: read, and write. Your "write" laser may be out.
You can try lens/laser cleaner, but they rarely work.Hello,
Again, thanks for the reply. I put a CD Laser Lens Cleaner disc in the burner. The music and the verbal instructions on Track 2 proceeded sort of jerkily, not enough to prevent me from understanding what the woman was saying, but every second or so there was a very brief silence. Like a speaker component with a loose wire connection. I also sprayed some air duster in there.
But guess what. I just tried to format a fresh CD and the formatting worked as in the days of old! So I guess I had a dirty driver; and your suggestion was spot on. Thank you so much.
Raucous round of applause for Broni.Quote
but they rarely work
I'm glad, it worked for you
Solve : Background Wallpaper Problem?
Answer»
I always choose a JPG photo for my background and click "Stretch" so it fits full screen. Yesterday, the photo suddenly layered itself so there are two photos. It looks like there is one on top of the other. This happens no matter which photo I choose. Any ideas of how to solve this? I've tried rebooting etc.Do you mind if you could take a screen shot and show me?
If you don't know how then follow these steps
PRESS "PRINT Screen" It should be up by "scroll lock" and "pause break"
Along with the Lights INDICATING if "Scroll lock", "CAPS lock" and "NUM lock" are ON
Next open up MS paint and press Ctrl + V Save it as a JPEG and Upload it herehttp://imageshack.us/
and post the image for me to take a look at....
Solve : Windows XP booting problem?
Answer»
When I turned my computer on last night I got a blue ERROR message screen, the computer rebooted and asked me which option to try restarting windows in--safe mode, safe mode with networking, last known success.... I try all the options and only had success when I rebooted in safe mode. After I got there is asked if I WANTED to go back to the last configuration which I tried three different dates without an success. I tried to just restart the computer when it was in safe mode but I got the same error message. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to try?When in safe mode, what do you mean by last configuration? Do you mean system restore? Is restoring the computer to and earlier date not working?
When in Safe Mode, try TURNING off re-start on error: Start>CONTROL Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery, CLICK 'Settings', under 'System Failure,' deselect 'Automatic ReStart.'
Re-boot, if blue screen, copy the exact error message and post back.if safe mode was the only option that worked what was the exact message you got after it booted, and what happend when you tried any other boot options
Solve : reloading windows xp tablet edition?
Answer»
hi, i recently got a 2nd hand tablet pc that didnt have a cd drive in it just a 2nd battery, the bios has a PW so i cant CHANGE anything in that, i got a cd drive that plugs into the smart card reader but it wont boot from it, i've tried copying the cd onto a usb drive but still nothing, i also have a usb floppy drive if that would b helpful in any way. any help at all would b greatly appreciated.Chances are that tablet does not support booting from a USB device...
What exactly is it that you are trying to accomplish here ? ?i'll give you all my specs and why im tryin to reload the O/s
windows XP tablet PC edition. 40gb sata HD, has a sata-ide converter cable so it needs 3rd party drivers, already downloaded and saved to a floppy. 512Mb RAM, 2 batteries, one is in the CD drive slot, 1.7Gh intel celeron M processor, intel wireless B built in wireless card. in the boot proccess it says Phoenix cME FirstBIOS Notebook Pro, i 4get if that stand for the BIOS version or just the motherboard.
i have a USB floppy drive and an exteral cd drive that plugs into the smart card reader.
and the BIOS has a password
now im trying to reload the o/s weather its tablet edition or not makes little difference. its 2nd hand and has a bunch of different limitations that were set by the last IT tech, it originally loged directly onto a generic account but i cracked the PASSWORDS and now i can get onto the administrator account. it has a bunch of stupid programs that were for the buisness it was from and a mcaffee that wont uninstall and i cant get an anti virus to run properly so i've gotten a couple trojans and at this point i'd rather just format the HARD drive and reload XPYou need to contact the seller regarding the BIOS password....
Other than that i would use a WinME boot floppy available at bootdisk.com to format the drive and start fresh.after i do that would i be able to use the smartcard slot to run the cd? because if not i'd rather try another way so i dont end up without an o/s on it.No.
If you cannot boot from a USB device Setup will not run.
If you format the drive before knowing what other options you have you could wind up with nothing.
What type of drive is in there and what OS do you plan on installing ? ?no built in drives EXCEPT hard drive. i have my USB floppy that it will boot from, i have a 2Gb USB flash drive that it hasnt booted from so far, and i have my external CD-ROM that plugs into the PCMCIA. i have 2 USB 2.0 ports and one PCMCIA slot. i plan on installing windows XP sp2 with tablet drivers that will are included in the O/S and i have all the 3rd party drivers for SATA, PCMCIA, pen, wireless card and basically everything i would need.Quote
use a WinME boot floppy available at bootdisk.com to format the drive and start fresh.
if i choose to intall the 3rd party drivers for the PCMCIA slot should i be able to use it to load the O/s off the cd?Quote from: lilnate1191 on July 02, 2008, 12:43:39 AM
Solve : Keyboard won't work as soon as windows loads?
Answer»
Problem is the keyboard does not work as soon as Windows loads. It works up until Windows begins to load and I can get into the bios with the keyboard and it works fine and get into the Windows load screen to select safe mode or normal mode, but not after Windows loads.
I have a networking password on the computer and I can't get past that screen. The mouse works perfectly in that screen though. I have tried 3 different keyboards and have tried USB and PS2 and have verified that all the keyboards work on ANOTHER computer.
I tried taking the HD out and putting it in another desktop and got the same problem.
I had this problem once before a few weeks ago, and I just messed with it for about 30 minutes and kept restarting and changing the keyboard from USB to PS2 and finally got the keyboard to work again. Since then I tried not to shut the computer down in case this happened, but have successfully shut it down and restarted it a few times since without problems until today.
Any help would be awesome.
ThanksAlso I suppose I should post my pc specs.
I built the computer - AMD 3400, MSI mb, 1gb ddr 400, 300gb western digital hd, running Windows XP Pro.
I have AVG but have had some viruses that it could't get rid of and was PLANNING on backing up and formatting the day this happened.1. Motherboard. If known, what is the model number of the MSI motherboard? (I'm basically wondering what options are in the CMOS setup for that BIOS).
2. Windows XP Professional. What is your current service pack LEVEL - Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2, or SP3?
3. Mouse. You've indicated the mouse works fine. Is it a wired USB mouse, a wired PS/2 mouse, or something else?
4. Keyboard(s). Are these wired USB and PS/2 keyboards? Which keyboard type, USB or PS/2, was used for the last successful "normal" login to this system ?
5. Windows Advanced Options Menu. If you can get to the Windows Advanced Options Menu (Tap the F8 key about once per second or faster as you power up the system), does the keyboard allow you to use the up, down, Enter keys to select an item from the menu? If so:
a. Try starting using the Last Known Good Configuration item. This will load the registry values for your last successful "normal" boot.
or
b. Try starting using Safe Mode item. You'll need the Administrator password for this option, if one is set.
If the keyboard does not allow you to select item from menu, please let us know. Also identify which keyboard type you're attempting to use.
Have you tried a brand new PS2 keyboard ? ?
Is this one of those MSI MBoards that has only one PS2 connector ? ?
They have had issues...To eliminate a lot of these, you should try booting up with a different hard drive and see if the problem still exists. I am actually having this exact same problem with my computer right now. I suspect AVG 8.0 of leading to the corruption of my boot files. All I know is that when I boot with a different HDD, everything works normally.
Do you have a floppy drive by any chance?
Hardware issues can cause issues like this... "usually RAM"... I'd burn a copy of Memtest86 from http://www.memtest86.com/ to a CD and boot from it and run a mem test.
Seen these problems before and it was a pair of Ram that didnt play well together... also seen where a single ram stick had addressing issues in certain areas like the 640MB range of a 1GB stick, so when the system was running idle and under a low LOAD of applications and didnt address the bad blocks, it was a screaming fast stable system, but when the accountant had like 5 different programs running stuff would act up SLOW WAY DOWN and then it would have the errors that want to report back to MS.Thanks, I'll give it a try...You used outdated HJT version.
Solve : Computer does not recognize CD/DVD Rom?
Answer»
I think this is a windows problem but I am not sure. Out of the blue my computer will not recognize my CD/DVD ROM. In the DEVICE MANAGER the drive is listed (HL-DT-ST-DVD+RW GWA4164B) and it has the yellow circle with the explanation mark. I cannot re-install the drivers from the DELL CD because the drive doesn't work. In addition, when I go to my computer, the drive is no longer listed.
I went out and bought a new DVD/CD today and installed it. Same thing, it showed up in the device manager but it will not work. The power to the drive is fine, I can open and CLOSE it. It just wont recognize anything.
Any clues? I'm totally stumped.If your Windows OS is newer than WinME the drives shouldn't need drivers.
Travel to Device Manager and right click each and select Remove/Uninstall.
Upon re-boot Windows will automatically re-install the devices and they should work fine.
Make sure the ribbon cables are snug and connected properly both to the drives and the motherboard.
Post BACK with your results...
P.S. You may want to try a brand new ribbon cable if the above does not work but try those first.
Solve : Windows repair error. I need some help fast!?
Answer»
I have a HP laptop and I was doing a repair installation of XP home on it and when it get's to the end it comes up with this error message.
"Setup can not set the required Windows XP configuration INFORMATION. This indicates an internal setup error. Contact your system administrator"
What should I do?If the data on the drive is not critical, I would avoid the "Repair Install" and PERFORM a "Clean Install" that wipes the partition out, recreates it, reformats it, and then you should be good.... If your system is one that has the Restore on the D: partition of the same drive that it is trying to rebuld C: on and you dont have a System Restore CD or DVD set for the system, you will need to BUY a new copy of the OS or Borrow a friends OS and ACTIVATE your system against "YOUR KEY" affixed to your system, or it is ILLEGAL!!!Another thing you can try is remove any unneccessary devices and their drivers....if something has been installed recently remove it and see if the Repair Install will take.
I've seen this before with XP.
Best of Luck.
Solve : need help in running a .bat file in windows xp?
Answer»
Please help. I've downloaded a script called GPSi to download my GPS waypoints. The directions that CAME with it said to 'double click on the .bat' file to register its components, but when i double click the file it only opens the file and doesn't seem to be doing any registry. Please help. How do i run .bat files? Do i have to run it from MS-DOS? IF yes, How? Thanks in advance.
.bat file can be run from within Windows by double clicking on it.
It'll simply open Command window, and run from there.Post the contents of the .bat file so we can determine what it is that it does...Thank you all for responding. I figured it out. The 'read me' file that came with the script was not working for me. It said to rename the file to .bat, which i did and didn't work. This is how i GOT it to work. Instead of renaming the file to .bat file, click 'file-->save as-->name of file.bat'. This SOLVED the problem.
Just in case any of you forumers are using ArcMap, this is a neat script(free),posted on ESRI's site, to download your Garmin GPS POINTS into ArcMap 9x.
Once again, thank you all very much. Thanks for posting back
Solve : computer just goes to flashing cursor?
Answer»
I am having an issue with my computer. (Windows xp)I keep my computer very clean and run antivirus and lavasoft adware weekly. My computer is about five years old. Its a hp. Cant tell you too much more because it wont come on. I have not installed anything recently or had any issues. It was working fine one night and I shut it down and went to bed. I went to start it the next day and all it does is come on..(fans working) you can see the working light start flashing and it comes up nvidia software...like it always does then goes straight to a flashing cursor and stays there...nothing more. No windows logo no nothing. I tried hitting f8....f10...f2....nothing! I cant get it to do anything. I dont have alot of money and I was just wondering if anyone could help with what it possibly could be.. I was thinking maybe the hard DRIVE???Quote
I tried hitting f8
Keep TAPPING F8 key, when computer starts, and see, if you can get to menu screen.
Do you have Windows CD?Yes I did try to keep tapping f8. It just stays at the flashing cursor... I have a windows millennium CD from a while back. I am not sure if I still have the Cd's that came with this computer when I bought it or not.Since this is Windows XP, Windows ME CD won't do.
Turn computer off. Open the case, ground yourself, and re-seat RAM, and video card (if separate).
Use compressed air can to clean inside.
Restart again.Same thing happened to me not to long ago with a friends comp.
The only thing i found that worked was reformatting the hard drive. I posted in allot of forums and still everything that was recommended did not work. In the end reformatting was it. Works great ever since Thanks Broni, I will try that when I get home and see if that works. If not and I do need to reformat like Acefsj said, how would I go about doing that since I cant get it to RESPOND to anything in the first place? Thanks again for al your help!!Put Windows CD in, and restart. It should boot from CD.ok,... I bought my pc from best buy and it came with 2 disk. one is for a bunch of software stuff that I dont use and I am not sure what the other one is. I know I dont have a windows xp disc. I had to format my drive one time before about 2 years ago but I think I just did it when the computer was BOOTING up and I hit f...something...its been a while since I did it.The other one may be some Recovery CD. That's all you need. You have to be aware, THOUGH, that all your data will be lost.Thats ok...I didnt have anything important on there that I dont have on disc so I am ok on that part. I just want to get it back to working.. Thanks for all your help Broni. I will post on here tomorrow night and let you know how it went..Thanks again!!We'll be here ok...I started it up to see whats going on again and .....mysteriously it came up like normal??
I didnt do anything at all to it. I took it apart anyway and cleaned it. Thanks for all of your help!
This looks like a GOOD place to go for help. I will be on here again I am sure. Thanks again!Things like this happen. I'm glad, it worked for you
You should consider backup strategy, if you don't have one.
Solve : Run a Ventrilo Server off of my Domain??
Answer»
I regestered a DOMAIN quite a while AGO, way before I learned about Ventrilo. Appearantly you can run a server off of my IP address, but my COMPUTER is not ALWAYS on, and I do not want to free the PORT through my router, since I do not know HOW to and do not wish to leave a hole in my router. So (because I know this is possible but nothing I have found on the internet has helped) how do I set up a ventrilo server off of my domain (which is Tedgreenebookeditions.com, just FYI)
Solve : Selecting a software to run a program?
Answer»
You know when you install a new program (lets say photoshop example) and they have their own format (in this example PSD). If you have a psd file and you open it a pop up will prompt you giving you two OPTIONS. 1: Use the internet to look for a suitable program to RUN this file. 2: Pick a program from the computer to run this file. You know when you pick option 2 there is a box saying "Always use this program to run this type of file" if I tick tick that and pick photoshop later on how can I change that psd file in to type of file (unknown format type), Hope you understand =\Use "Open With..." and select browse.
Oh no I know that. I mean after I do that with "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" how WOULD I change it back to kind of icon?
That's the only way I know.
Change to another program, always use it, reboot your computer, the icon will change.Are you asking how to make Windows forget which program to use or do you just want to change the icon?
To make Windows forget...
1) Go to "Control Panel" and then "Folder Options".
2) Go to the "File Types" tab.
3) Select the extension you want to change and click "Delete".
4) Click "OK".
Now, Windows will not know which program to use to open the file.
To change the icon...
1) Go to "Control Panel" and then "Folder Options".
2) Go to the "File Types" tab.
3) Select the extension you want to change and click "Advanced".
4) Click "Cange Icon..." and browse to the icon you want. (To use the "unknown file type" icon, type "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll" in the "Look for icons in this file" FIELD.)
5) When you have the icon you want, click "OK" in the three windows.
Now, Windows will know which program to use to open the file but it will show the "unknown file type" icon.Quote from: Kip on September 27, 2009, 11:37:40 AM
Solve : bsod 0x00000024 wont boot from disk?
Answer»
recently my computer contracted the blue screen of death. it won't boot from anything. i've tried creating a new disk, but that didn't work. i'm running windows xp, on a dell xps400. I've run all the tests everything comes back good. the error message is; stop 0x00000024, 0x00190203, 0x8719bae0, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000
I've got service pack 2. Did you set the CD drive as the first boot device?
Are you using a real windows CD or a COPY?What is the ENTIRE blue screen error message?STOP 0x00000024 (NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM)
This stop code indicates the NTFS file system driver encountered a situation it could not handle, and is almost always caused by 3 things:
Data corruption on the disk
Data corruption in memory
The system completely running out of memory (this typically only happens on heavily-loaded servers)
Things to check:
1 Reseat the memory and all drive data cables to eliminate data corruption issues stemming from poorly or improperly seated hardware.
2 Run a complete memory and hard drive diagnostic. The quick test will not be THOROUGH enough here. You need to run the full system diagnostic.
3 If those diagnostics pass, run a full file system check from the Recovery CONSOLE (chkdsk /f /r) to detect and (potentially) fix any corrupted data.(CD XP with DELL) and after complete run command FixBoot.
4 If none of the above solves the issue, reinstall Windows.
5 If that does not fix the issue, replace the hard drive.
No ideas. thankQuote
No ideas. thank
Does this mean you followed all the steps ouytlined ? ?about BSOD is the world wide problems we can't point directly. I have faced it 3 times and get ok I do it one by one until end of idea.
Thing 1- there is one pc process normal but maybe 1 or 2 start BSOD until restart manual
fist I have to test:
-Hardware: point to RAM just replace new ok work ever and it can possible with other Hardware like VGA, NetWork Card , CD-ROM cause BSOD
Thing 2- there is one pc like the same and test above not ok and then i start test software by chkdsk on Hdd oh just /r/f it show bad sector that causing BSOD and it ok.
thing 3-that pc just like before all my friends do of their best still the same about hardware. pc is like : when start to windows Screen may be 30 ss start BSOD and restart by it self(loop) and I just use 2 command fixboot and chkdsk /r/f it work ok. ntfs and some file boot have a problems.
these all I have met before so I can help as much as possible.if anyone have any idea pls tell us more to break the BSOD. thank
HuH ? ?
Chkdsk /r/f is redundant since chkdsk /r assumes /f...
Not clear on your other POINTS.
Solve : Pixilated icons?
Answer»
I'm using XP-SP2 and IE8. Recently, all the icons on the desktop, menu bar, and in apps like Word and IE have stopped displaying correctly. Instead of an image, they are just an outline of dots. If I click on one of them, it sometimes restores to the correct image, but others around it do not. This is also affecting the text on buttons. Any idea what's going wrong?
THANKS,
TOMHello
Have u rebooted the PC lately?, Just for argument shake lets try this first. When this TYPE of behavior COMES it is usually a video CARD problem or memory problem (physical or virtual). Make sure u meet the specs for running IE8. It might just be to run IE8 u might need some more RAM. Go to Task Manger and check the memory usage.
Solve : Registry recovery error?
Answer»
Every time I turn on and log in my computer for the last couple years I always get this message:
One of the files containing the systems registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was sucessful.
I have looked on multiple web sites to find some information on how to finally get rid of this and all I could find was computer speak that I had no CLUE how to change registry entires and someone else saying unless I knew what I was doing, messing with the registry was a bad idea.
Can anyone help me finally get this off my computer?
Thanks!
[attachment deleted by admin]Do you have your XP CD?Yes I do, I tried that when it first happened to reinstall the CD but I didn't want to erase everything on my computer. So I chickened out and didn't do it.What type of CD is it?Noticed your "Play Nancy Drew Games" link. I really enjoyed the books (a long time ago...).
The "Shut down computer" link on your desktop... Is that a standard Windows XP desktop link? If not, tell us what's going on there.My computer came from Gateway, that should tell you how old it is. I have a blue Operating system cd from gateway that says its Window XP Home Edition version 1.0.
The shut down icon on the front screen I forget to use anymore. When I first got the computer I was enrolled in a Windows XP newsletter written from a woman, so long ago I don't remember her name and she would give hints and tips on USING Windows XP one of her tips one week was how to have on your desktop and quicker route to shut down and reboot so I have those 2 on my desktop. But the registry error occurred was after I did that.
I hope that helped
P.S. Yes, Nancy Drew are still great books, my 2 younger girls enjoy the books and now the cd rom games.Try Windows repair. It won't touch your data.
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlFor info only... Just read the entire thread to gain insight on the thoughts of others: Startup Registry Error Window
To read the entire thread use the "Next by Thread" and/or the "Follow-Ups" links.Arghhhhhhhhhhh! That didn't WORK! I followed the websites directions but they had professional Setup, I only have home edition. It just installed Windows XP on my computer it didn't repair it and now I have 2 versions of it on my computer! I am trying not to hyperventilate here but it went from an annoying problem to now my computer will barely load anything. How do I now get the extra Windows XP off my computer? I can select which one I want to load the last time I logged in if I pick the top Windows XP Home Edition it is the new old one from the cd, if I arrow down to the bottom one it is the one I had yesterday before I tried the fix!
Any help would be appreciated!Quote from: Dittosmom on October 01, 2009, 06:37:07 AM
Arghhhhhhhhhhh! That didn't work! I followed the websites directions but they had professional Setup, I only have home edition.
1. Which Link. I'm assuming it was the "How-to-repair-Windows-XP" link. This might actually be a good thing. If you really have two copies of Windows XP installed (I hope they're on separate partitions), then with any luck the "original" installation hasn't been disturbed. I don't know why they would load slow (both of them?) unless the hard drive has low free space.
2. Error Message.
a. Ignoring the slowness, does the new installation from CD ALSO present the "error message" you're trying to eliminate?
b. Has the "error message" always been present with the original Window XP?
c. And the "error message" began after the "Shutdown computer" link was added to the desktop? Right away?
3. Post contents of "boot.ini" file to this thread. You may cut and paste CONTENT - just don't delete it. (It's relatively easy to remove second Windows XP from operating system selection menu, but we need to know how/where it was installed to remove its installed files.)
a. "Start" Menu -> right click "My Computer" -> left click "Properties".
b. Left click "Advanced" tab -> within "Startup and Recovery" section, left click "Settings".
c. Within "System startup" section, left click "Edit" button.
d. Use cursor to select entire contents of edit box ("boot.ini" file).
e. Cut selected text (Ctrl-C), then paste to this thread (Ctrl-V). Note: Do not delete the original text.
f. Use "Cancel" button on "Startup and Recovery" and "System Properties" dialog boxes to back out of them.First off yes it was the repair XP link. I printed the directions but it didn't give the messages that it was showing and before i could say stop it was installing windows xp again on my computer. No its not on a different partition its on my c: drive along with the old one with the error message.
Yes, the error message has disappeared on the new version but when I log on to the original it is still there. I am sure the slow loading is from free space being used up with 2 versions (my free space has been tricky for awhile since I have kids loading programs that use alot of space).
My internet on that computer is not able to work properly now so I am using my laptop to respond
Here is what showed up on the boot.ini note pad screen:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fastdetect
I think that answered all the questions. If not ask again.
Thanks! but Help!This means you didn't follow the instructions...
I've never had a Repair Install go bad.1. Backup Data. Good time to back up any "data" files you can't afford to lose. I'm not comfortable with parallel operating system installations to same partition.
2. Fresh Install. Okay - the error message does not show up from new install.
3. Which One. The "boot.ini" indicates two operating systems installed on the same disk partition: one to "c:\windows", another to "c:\winnt".
You may edit the identification strings "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" to whatever you want. So carefully modify one (or both of them), so when you subsequently reboot, you can identify which one is installed where.
4. Keep One. After you decide which one to eliminate, edit the boot.ini file:
a. [boot loader] - Within this section, ensure the "directory name" at the end of the "default=..." string reflects the one you're keeping; either "WINDOWS" or "WINNT".
b. [operating systems] - Within this section, delete the line representing the operating system you no longer want.
c. Save the edits (by exiting with OK?).
Note: If the file contains a single operating system invocation line within the [operating systems] section, the operating system selection menu will no longer display during system startup.
5. Free Disk Space. Reboot (should automatically boot to remaining entry in boot.ini). Verify it's the right one. (You have access to your important data). Delete the "directory" subtree of the one you no longer want (c:\WINDOWS or c:\WINNT ?) to "free" the disk space. Reboot, check free space on disk.Thanks sooooooo much for the help. I found the new install and kept it since it was without the registry error. No sense going to all this work if I didn't fix the initial problem. I made sure I backed up on my external drive everything I wanted just in case. It seems to work now I am just figuring out how to get my programs to automatically run that did before like Intgernet security and my wireless modem program.
So Thank you thank you!
Solve : computer in booting cycle?
Answer»
Computer starts up, appears to be booting, gets to windows xp splash screen, then becomes blank, and starts again. This CYCLE keeps going on and on with it never starting windows all the way. Whats going on? Im going to try to go into safe mode and run mbam and see if it can find viruses. Anything else I can do?
try to have a windows repair.It could be the heat SENCER shuting the computer down to protect it self does it beep just before it shuts downNo it doesnt shut down, it stays on, but just in this cycle
As the system starts to boot tap the F8 key and you'll be taken to a screen offering various boot options. Choose "Disable restart on error" and reboot. What HAPPENS?Allan,
When I DISABLED the restart on failure, the computer went through the initial stages of booting, go to the win xp splash page and then failed again, but this time it gave me an error and a BSOD. The error is
STOP 000021a (Fatal system error)
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000094 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has been shut down.
When I started the system earlier without disabling the system restart, it first gave me a 'Press F11 to recover' and then gave the windows splash screen, and then cycled again through the same thing
I feel that if I try the F11 approach, I might lose my DATA
What else can I do
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669I just took the easy road out. I transferred all the data to another computer, then wiped and reloaded XP. Works well, but the only downside to this is that all t he program applications have to be loaded again
Solve : Trying to instal Windows Xp Home on Acer Extensa 4220 laptop on new hard drive?
Answer»
Can anyone help me ?? I have been given an Acer Extensa 4220 laptop by a friend which has a new 250gb Toshiba hard drive. I am trying to INSTALL Windows XP home edition from my own copy of Windows XP Home CD but cant get it to load. As suggested on another site, I have tried downloading the SATA files from Acers website and created a USB floppy disk. I PRESS F6 during setup and load the files.
Setup formats the hard drive using NTFS but then asks for the Intel MATRIX Storage Manager drivers to be inserted into the A: drive.
What is this ??
I have also tried creating a combined windows XP/ SATA driver ISO boot disk using nlite (as suggested) but this will not boot - says NTLDR is missing press Alt+Ctrl+Del to start
Any help/ ideas greatly appreciated !!Uh... I think that driver is for a RAID setup... Look in your bios and see if here is a setting for AHCI mode for your drive. Try disabling it...
Let me know if that works or nothttp://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownloadcenter.intel.com%2FDetail_Desc.aspx%3FProductID%3D2101%26DwnldID%3D17882%26lang%3Deng%26iid%3Ddc_rss&ei=_8TESrzONJWe8AbXkvVA&usg=AFQjCNErUxJQlqnaLCt2B98kiyONJtQOrw&sig2=6nkdbtG303OPy_VIF9903wThanks for your suggestions. I managed to sort this out by copying my Windows XP Home CD to my desktop hard drive. Then by using nlite SOFTWARE I merged the SATA drivers downloaded from Acer website and burnt a bootable ISO disk using a copy of imgburn software.
Not sure if it matters but I right clicked each of the SATA files (iaastor etc) and changed the setting in security to unblocked before merging drivers into Windows XP using nlite and burning ISO boot disk using imgburn.
Now using Windows XP on the Acer extensa 4220 laptop (had to hunt for Lan, Audio and other drivers for XP THOUGH !!
Solve : Files and settings wizard does not replace files and settings after re installat?
Answer»
Files and settings wizard does not replace files and settings after re installation. of XP. After several tries I got a copy of FASTconv, a command line program, to extract the files. It has been a long time since I used a command line and the command is complex. I have set the command *censored* follows........ fastconv /V /S:source store /D:DESTINATION store /T:temp store /K
I got this from.....fastconv [/v] [/i:] [/e[:]] /s: /d: [/t:] [/k]
I left out the /I switch so all files in the DIR source store would be extracted.
I named the Dir. source store, destination store and temp store. When I run it I get instructions on USAGE and a command prompt What am I missing?Boy, u figure if MS guru informs us this will work the they describe it. I'll rather take my chances with chisel and hammer. I ran into the same problem years ago. Try this
You just need to point it to the directory where the folder USMT2.UNC is.
Don't point it at the folder, just to the directory where that folder is
located. So for me it was F:\USMT2.UNC..... So I pointed it to the F:\
and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
PS
Also make sure both FAST are the same version.
Solve : Problem Transfering OE Mail Folders?
Answer»
Hi,
I am having trouble importing a file
into Outlook Express. When I try, I
get the message:
"No messages can be found in this
folder or another application is
running that has the required FILES
open. Please select another folder
or try closing applications that may
have files open."
In an article on www.ask-leo.com it seems to
say that this problem is caused by
the "read only" attribute being on.
However, I am unable to get it to
turn off. I uncheck it (uncolor it
actually. The box is colored in
green. If I click it once, it goes
blank. If I click it twice, a check
appears. If I click it a third time,
it turns green again.). However, as
soon as I close the properties
window, it reverts back to its
original state. (read only colored
green)
I submitted the problem to another
forum and got the following reply:
"The 'read only' checkbox means
nothing in WinXP, you can safely
ignore it. Permissions are set using
ACLs.
If I remember correctly, the Read
Only mechanism in the properties
window USES n attribute bit from FAT
filesystems (pre-NTFS). This bit
exists in both filesystems, but is
always set to '1' by default by NTFS
and then IGNORED, presumably as a
result of designing NTFS such that
FAT filesystems can be converted into
it.
If you are having trouble moving the
file, you need to look at the ACLs in
the 'security' tab of the
'properties' window."
Well, there is no "security" tab.
The folder has 3 tabs--General,
Sharing, & Customize. On the sharing
tab it seemed to indicate that there
might be some restriction on sharing
the CONTENTS of the folder. So I ran
a wizard to change that & I checked
two boxes on the Sharing tab marked
"Share this folder on the network."
(I'm not on a network by the way.)
and "Allow network users to change my
files."
None of this helped. I still can't
import the file to OE. I still get
the same error message. Can you
help? Thanks.
If you are goin to format, make sure you don't do a fast format.... because fast format doesn't delete all error on the partition.
and back-up you personal data and important files...
Why do you think there are hd errors? There's no reason not to do a quick format for the problems he's having.before i learned about computer stuff, the way i solved my problems was to do a re format of my hard drive. so i am very good at doing this lol lol Quote
tuneup utilities, ccleaner, glary utilities pro, xoftspy se, regcure, pc fixer adaware, and window washer
gee I can't figure out where these problems are coming from
Almost all of the those are rogue tools... xoftspy SE being one for sure. the only one I can SAY is 100% FINE is CCleaner. So it's no wonder you've managed to get "infected"... the "tools" your using to prevent getting infected are an infection of their own in some cases!
how can i be infected im using MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware pro also, every scan i have done shows not infected with anything. When BC says "infected" he doesn't mean "viral infection", he means that those apps you are using cause as many problems as they claim to fix - more in some cases. well i have had no problems until a few days ago when i did updates through microsoft. i am about ready to trash all my microsoft stuff and go back to linuxOkaypimvdh
That's not needed. First, nobody cares if you're a newbie or not. Second, you posted a question and people are TRYING to help. You can choose to follow the advice or ignore it, but there's no need to be defensive and strike out at someone, even if his advice is less than great.
And by the way - in my book someone who calls Task Manager "CTRL-ALT-DEL" or resorts to formatting as a problem solving tool is less than computer savvy sorry wont happen again, i was just tired from all the other fourms that i have been on the last few days giving conflicting advice. calling task manager is just out of habit, and formatting to solve my problems was done that way along time ago back in the late 80s, and thanks for that cool link in your sig. i will be checking out that tweak site later. oh and by the way whats a good list of apps do you think are best to use at all times if i may ask?*cuts in front* May I have this dance?
The last tool you could try is 'Microsoft's Malicious SOFTWARE Removal Tool.'
Go To Run > Type "MRT"
This will scan and fix a number of issues.
As reformatting? I call that my fix all. Nuking the drive and restarting will fix all software junk. At least that way you can be sure something will be fixed, INSTEAD of slowly backing away hoping it stays working. Nothing wrong with a clean install.
As for this junk?
Quote
tuneup utilities, ccleaner, glary utilities pro, xoftspy se, regcure, pc fixer adaware, and window washer
DON'T. Most of it is junk you don't need.
Considering you have so many programs that THINK they can play and alter the registry makes a clean install even more recommended. thx griff i forgot all about mrt, i will try that now. I suggest the following as anti-malware protection:
spyware blaster (provides passive protection) - free if you manually update (you should do so weekly)
MalwareBytes and/or Super AntiSpyware (free to run scans, paid version if you keep it resident)
A GOOD anti-virus utility always kept resident (I use Kaspersky, but there are many good ones - both free and paid)
That's all I use, but there is nothing that beats "smart computing" (always know the sites to which you navigate, never open links in emails unless you know the sender, etc).Microsoft also released their own Malware tool called "Microsoft Security Essentials."
It's a free program that just came out... yeserday? People who tried the Beta have said its pretty good if not great, so you can use that as well. (Remember, only 1 antivirus can be installed at a time!)
I can't wait to see more in depth reviews of it. thx allan, and mrt did not find anything griff. thx for all your help i'm logging off now very tired.
and delete everything. maybe Index.dat won't be DELETED but thats no problem.
then go up 1 FOLDER (C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files) and delete everything.
Solve : Takes Forever To Shut Down (Most Of The Time)?
Answer»
Hi everyone,
What a gem this site is.I'm new here as Ive only just discovered the site but its great to see SOMEWHERE like this.
Any WAY was kinda hoping someone out there might be able to help.
When I shut down my P.C. nine times out of ten it takes forever to go through the process,most times somewhere in the order of seven to ten minutes but just once in a while with no warning it does it in around a minute or less.
If anyone can shed some light on it for me I'd be real greatfull as you can imagine when your tired and want to go to bed it relay does seem to drag on.
Thanks everyone and great site.
Love and Peace
O.T.1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0
2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box
For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:
Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000
Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000
Reboot
3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000Thanks Allan Wow and instantly as well.
I see your over the pond there,I don't have any idea what time it is for you guys there rite now but its real late bout midnight here so I'm gonna deal with that one in the morning,but relay THANKYOU for coming back to me like that Allan.
5 hours difference and I'm about to logoff myself. Have a good evening.You to and thanks again.Thanks so much Allan,Guru is an understatement.
I thought you might be interested that it was option 2 of yours that fixed it.
It was the Hung time out in particular.The value that was in was 5000 so I changed it as PER your instructions to 1000.
The WaitToKillApp Time out was already at 2000.
I have to ask Allan because I hate doing things and not learning from it.What do those figures represent?Are they time comands?And if so how does it all work?
I do a small amount of programing PIC Basic on microcontrolers so I have a small (very small) GRASP of some of the mechanics of software but Windows is a mystery to me,but I'm trying to learn as much as I can about how it ticks.
But regardless Allan,thanks very very much for your learned assistance.
O.T.
Shhhhhhh....
He's sleeping.
Well, I do tend to fall asleep early, but not THIS early
Yes, those are milliseconds. Hence, 2000 is two seconds and so on. Actually, changing it from 5 seconds to 2 seconds should not have made that much of a difference, but okay - why argue with success?
And you're most welcome. Glad you got it sorted out.
Solve : Question about an error on bootup?
Answer»
Hi,
I just built a PC and EVERY TIME it boots up I get a window stating that the nVidia NForce Network Controller software needs to be installed.
Everything runs fine if I bypass this message but it must mean SOMETHING.
I am running software DRIVERS for an nVidia 8800 GT on this PC, which has nVidia 7900 GTX cards. But when I download the supposed drivers for the 7900 series I get the lowest resolution that I can't BRING back to "normal".
This PC has a Linksys wireless router.
Is it something else other than the video drivers that are responsible for this?
Thank you.
AMD 3500+ Athlon CPU
2x nVidia 7900 GTX cards SLI
Win XP sp3
2 x 1GB memory
ASUS A8N-SLI mb Premium
Your post is unclear - have you installed the nforce network controller driver? If not, go to the nvidia site and install it.Is that the same as the video card driver?No
Solve : long starting time, high CPU usage with AAWservice.exe & avgrsx.exe on startup?
Answer»
Sorry for the long subject line, but that about sums things up.
Startup takes about 10-15 minutes before the hard drive settles down to no visible activity. After the first 5 minutes, I expect little to no activity, but the task manager shows AAWservice.exe and avgrsx.exe each sucking 0-100% CPU. That's with no program turned on/running.
Many / Most operations also seem to run slowly, including just opening My Computer, but also extending to things like browsing on Firefox (latest version, just updated today to 3.5.3).
And, the fan operation is incorrect. It starts up all right with a surge, then dies down, but in a minute or so into startup, it ramps up to a high speed that remains constant while the computer is on. It's not as high as the surge during startup, but still high, and SpeedFan program shows mild operating temps (35-45 degrees C). I have already opened the case and blown dust clear. The outside of the unit does not feel hot, and it is propped up anyway to ALLOW for circulating air underneath.
I'm using a 5-year-old NEC LavieC with Windows XP home edition. Service Pack 2 (although my Windows updater is set to automatic). 784.944kb RAM
AVG, Ad Aware Anniversary edition, Spybot, are installed, and Comodo free edition is my firewall. I update the antimalware software every 2 weeks or so and run full scans, where almost NOTHING is found.
Using a Buffalo wireless router.
Have no idea about sound cards.
Thanks in advance for any advice.http://www.exe-error-fixes.com/avgrsxexe/
The other is related to ad aware, which is an outdated product that you should uninstall.I'd suggest, you get rid of AVG as well and switch to something lighter, like Avira, or Avast.Allan,
Thanks for the advice. I went to that link and successfully did as steps 1 and 2 directed.
For 2c it says only "Scans", but there were several sub-folders under it, so I just cleared everything in all the sufbolders. Same for 2d Schedules. I hope this was all right.
However, in step 3, I had problems. AVGMfx86.sys was there, so I deleted it, but I could not find AVGrsstx.dll even though it was supposed to be in the WINDOWS/system32 folder.
Also, I do not know how to get rid of "all incidences of AVG(Shell Extension. Can you explain how?
Broni,
I will take that suggestion under advisement, as I've heard good things about Avast, but for now, I want to SEE if Allan's fix works sufficiently. Thank you for the suggestion.
GlenskiGlenski - actually I'd agree with Broni. Both Avast and Avira are HIGHER rated than AVG. I'd suggest you download one of the two, uninstall AVG and then install the other. It will solve your problem AND give you a slightly better anti virus utility.Ok, Allan. No offense intended towards Broni. Will get Avast soon.
Now, about my fan problem, is this the right section of the forum to discuss fixing it?Depending on the CPU that fan behavior is normal for some of the newer dual/quad cores...patio,
I'm sorry, but I don't understand that terminology.
It just seems incredibly strange and abnormal for the fan to be on a high setting constantly after startup, even when I have not started any programs. At that time, there is 10-15% CPU activity. The fan speed does not waver one iota, and if it's based on CPU activity, I am very puzzled.
Allan,
You wrote that I should uninstall Ad Aware because it is an outdated product. As far as I know, the version I have (8.0.7, anniversary edition) is the most up to date version. Do you know another? Thanks in advance.Hey, what happened to responses here?
I still have a fan problem.
And, despite removing Ad Aware and replacing AVG with Avast, I still have a very slow computer. Some claim it was Firefox 3.0, but I have 3.5.3 with the latest updates, and today was incredibly slow with lots of stalls and freezes.
I look at the task manager, and although the graphics display is flatline maxed out at 100% (and the Idle process reads zero CPU usage), there doesn't seem to be any process sucking that much total CPU.
Please respond.Disk Cleanup...
Defrag...
Check the amount of free space on your drive...remove any unneccessary apps and data you don't need...
DLoad and install StartupCPL from Mike Lin...check it for any unneccessary startup items...do NOT disable anything if you don't know what it is...
Add more RAM...it's dirt cheap right now.Sorry - forgot all about this thread.
Instead of AdAware you should use either Malware Bytes or Super Antispyware
Open Task Manager to the Processes tab and sort it on the cpu column with highest usage at the top (click the "CPU" title twice). You said System Idle is low or at zero - which process is eating all the cpu cycles?To see it better...
Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
I guess this will be ignored...patio,
Why so negative?
I already have the max amount of RAM, and I think I've removed any obvious apps that I don't need (although who is to say when there are hidden things?). I will look into eliminating the startup garbage, though. Defragging has been on my mind, and since my OS is Japanese, it is not always easy to go through instructions, even with my Japanese wife, but I will try in the near future.
Allan,
Malwarebytes is already installed. I used to have Superantispyware, too, but I felt I had too much protection at one time.
I'm sorry, but I didn't look today to see what was sucking all the CPU. Will do that tomorrow. What's weirder is that I set up 2 accounts (me, my wife) a couple of weeks ago, and there is a totally DIFFERENT number of items on the task manager when I check either account. The original account I had (now my wife's) has about 40 items on it, including the system idle process, but my second account (mine) has about a dozen items and NO system idle process!
Broni,
Will post that with Allan's request on my next post. Thanks for the instructions.Glen - I wasn't suggesting running both spyware apps resident. There's no harm in scanning with both though, since no one utility gets everything.
Hi, I need a WAY to start .swf files full screen from command prompt or visual basic. It would be great if there were no toolbars at all. I don't care if I have to use any extra programs. I also need to be able to close it from a keyboard short cut other than alt+F4.
Pleade help me!!! Can you do it fkrom the keyboard?
You can create hot keys to start a keyboard script.
That can be from a custom program...
ir with tools that are ALREADY available.
Here is one:
www.autohotkey.com
For more Google Keyboard MacrosAutohotkey is a very good program. The only downside is trying to move the mouse more than once. HHH.
The .dwf can be in different FLAVORS. It might help if the topic starter would provide a short example of a swf like the one he wants to use. Maybe we could make a script that will do what he wants.
I doubt that a pure batch would work. (Somebody may prove me wrong.)
VBScript may work,, but that might be overkill.
AutoHotKey would be a QUICK and easy method....
It is easy to debug...
Maybe THEE is a way to work around the mouse once problem.That works for me!
These two errors INDICATE that a program running in the kernel encountered an unexpected condition it could not recover from. They have identical troubleshooting and resolution steps, and you will probably need to use the Windows Debugger to find out what caused the error.
Things to check:
*If the Blue Screen message mentions a driver or library file, figure out what driver or APPLICATION that file is part of and update or disable it.
*Update the system BIOS to the latest available revision.
*Uninstall any recently installed programs, and roll-back any recently installed drivers.
*Run diagnostics on the computer's memory.
Solve : Isntalled Windows and now cant connect to the internet?
Answer»
I have a gateway desktop 500 PIII. It came preinstalled with windows 98 when I bought it. Now i have another gateway desktop that has win xp on it. I used that disk to install winxp on my computer that had win 98. But now I cant connect to the internet. There is no network adapter listed under device manager and nothing in internet connections. I went to the gateway website to see if they had any drivers, but all the drivers listed for my computer (the 500 PIII) are for win 95,98,2000 and nt. I dont see anything for xp. So how do I connect it to the internet
Well, aside from anything else the XP CD is licensed to the XP Computer. You're not permitted to use it to install on a different (let alone second) system.maybe, although I doubt that it is a license ISSUE, cause I have another computer that had an OS that I transferred to a different computer, and it worked. I did have to install the drivers from the computer manufacturer website, which I have to do anyway when I reinstall an OS on the computer on which it was preinstalled earlier.
But in this case, I installed the OS from one gateway computer to another, and everything works except for the internet. I go to the gateway website and I cant find a network driver that works with xp for that BRAND of computer. So, if I had to reinstall the xp OS on the gateway computer on which it was preinstalled, because of say viruses or any reason, then wouldnt I still have to go to gateway.com to find the network driver and would I be able to find one?
I doubt that the reason is that a computer that used to previously have win98 can never work with win xp. So where can I find a suitable driver and how would I know if it is suitable.
Quote
Gateway is not obliged to SUPPORT old hardware that was never used with XP.
When they went to Windows 2000 they may have decided that that hardware was at the 'end of life' point. So they never made a driver for XP. If it was not on the XP CD, it means they never had a XP driver for it or did not release it.
Is that too hard to understand?hmmm okay.
maybe, although I doubt that it is a license issue, cause I have another computer that had an OS that I transferred to a different computer, and it worked. I did have to install the drivers from the computer manufacturer website, which I have to do anyway when I reinstall an OS on the computer on which it was preinstalled earlier.
I wasn't suggest that was the problem, only that it is a violation of the EULAAllan,
From my experience, you might be able to install Windows XP on another system that was not licensed for it. Windows would then give you 30 days to d register the system with Microsoft. In some cases MS may ask you to buy a new license.
In any case, I don;t think that was his problem. I understood his problem was a missing driver. My guess was that gateway never used that piece of hardware on a system that went out the door with XP on it.actually i got a driver that I was able to use. Its a USB driver, and when i converted the ethernet plug to a USB plug it all worked.Installing another OS to another system can detect errors on the computer.This is because, there were OS that was been having a license that can only be detected to its corresponding system.
Solve : Help booting my computer?
Answer»
Hello,
I have an emachines t6424 media center pc. Let me preface this by saying I am writing this on another computer. A few days ago, I turned the computer on and as it got to the windows welcome screen, it would just DISPLAY a black screen and not proceed any further. I tried a few more times to turn it on, with the same results. I then was able to boot in SAFE mode, and there saved all my pictures, files etc, figuring SYSTEM restore was my only hope. I then inserted the system restore cd, and it copied files until it got to 36% and displayed the following message.
the file:
from 'preload' C:\PRELOAD\BASE_01.inp
base_01.inp cannot be recovered!
my question is why does this happen with the recovery cd? The computer was purchased with xp preinstalled so I do not have any other disc other than the recovery one. What is the problem, and what can I do to fix it?
Thanks,
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't PROVIDE any diagnostic tool.
Solve : help with windows xp installation please?
Answer»
Hi. I have windows xp sp3 installed on my computer. I reformatted my computer but the files did not get formatted. How do I get rid of these files in the reformatting process. I have tried over and over again but they remain.
thanksClearly you did not format the drive. Boot to the XP CD and when the install process begins you'll be given the option to format the drive first. Select that option and then proceed with the installation.
BTW, just a clarification of LINGO - you do not format a computer or files. You format a drive or partition Welcome to the CH forums.
It sounds like you are opting to do a repair install after booting from the XP cd. You should opt to install the OS, and reformat partitions. You have not given any details of your system, please read this...
Details of which files you want to delete and on which partition they reside would be helpful.
With no offense intended to Dusty, let's not MAKE this more complicated than it is. Personally, I don't care what kind of system you have or anything about your files. Just boot to the cd, start the install, format the drive, and install the OS. It's really that simple.i have figured out its because im not booting from the cd but from the xp thats already installed. How do I set my computer up to boot from cd?
thanxCorrect - you MUST boot to the cd. Go into the bios and change the boot order so your cd is at the top of the list. Do not change anything else. Save the change, exit and REBOOT to the cd.Quote from: Allan
Certainly no offense taken. Perhaps I'm overly cautious in always WANTING to know the environment I'm trying to advise on. The next time someone is advised to format a recovery partition won't be the first time.
At the level of knowledge displayed by WinXPhelp in CLAIMING to have formatted his/her computer it would not be a surprise if the XP cd being used is not a full install disk. Let's hope that the advice given is correct.
Cheers & good luck.
That's uncalled for.Quote from: Allan on September 28, 2009, 05:35:44 AM
A bit touchy? We both gave much the same advice within 2 seconds of each other i.e. to boot from the XP cd and format within the install process and I still hope the advice given is correct.
S.M.A.R.T. is explained here...
You should update your backup immediately and prepare for drive failure.
Here's a quote from the linked site:
Quote
According the S.M.A.R.T. specifications, when a problem is detected (failure predicted), the hard disk should work for at least 24 hours to perform the data backup. But in many cases this time is not enough - that's why it is IMPORTANT to recognize problems and prepare before it's too late.
