Solve : flash drives? |
Answer» OK....I am not familiar with flash drives. How much information can you get off your computer? Or do these drives only work when retrieving certain files, one at a time. I mean can you download all your information on one? USB flash drives, like all storage devices, come in DIFFERENT 'sizes.' Most flash drives today are in the +/- 2 GB capacity and they go up to a capacity of at least 8 16 GB - maybe more. They operate just like your HARDDRIVE does - the drive will SHOW up in Windows Explorer and you can save data to the drive or retrieve data from the drive. What are you trying to accomplish? Quote How much information can you get off your computer? You should note that the most common Flash Drives are around 512 MB to 4 GB and modern HARD Disks usually average around 80 - 320 GB |

Solve : windows xp (home ,pro, and media center? |
Answer» I tend to the school of thought that if it ain't broke don't fix it. For instance i have chosen the option to determine which updates i will download and install from Microsoft.I am currently using IE6 and have no intention to update to version 7.Now my question what are the opinions re installing the RECENT update of SP3. I have Sp2 installed and i GENERALLY do accept all security updates that seem to be never ending. However my research has found many complaints and problems (some devastating) that users have experienced after installing Sp3. I will be very surprised if there turns out to be a unanimous point of view but i would like some food for thought on this item. Thank you, truenorthMany people leave SP3 out.Hi truenorth ........ I follow what was what the old Fred Langa deal, LangaList - now Windows Secrets .... most useful reviews there. General consencus seems not too bad for SP3 but I CHOOSE still to not take chances - enough potential gremlins to make me shy of it - for at least some while longer anyways. I can't afford to have down time if avoidable. |

Solve : Easy CD Creator 5? |
Answer» Easy CD Creator 5 came with the Gateway I bought in 2002. I use it exclusively to save family pictures. I use the Direct CD format utility to format the data CDs and then I can save pictures on the CD. I've never encountered any difficulty once I learned the process. Now, however, when I place a blank data CD into the drive and bring up the Direct CD Format utility things go awry. The format page indicates that I have a blank CD in the drive; okay. I click on "Format" and it starts normally. Usually the formatting takes 30-60 seconds. Nowadays, the CD remains in the drive; clicking on "Eject" is useless. After waiting up to two hours, and the "whatever-it-is" is still going on, I need to turn the computer off and restart. I can then eject the CD. When I reinsert the CD and bring up the Direct CD Format screen, I read where it originally said "blank CD" now says "unrecognized data." Moreover, the Free Space and Used Space indicators both say "0 bytes." The Roxio website, featuring "Ask RoxAnn," has proven unhelpful. Is this problem familiar to anyone?Do you still have original "Utilities CD", if it came with your Gateway?Thank you for responding. I have two CDs titled "Applications," one titled "Drivers," and two titled "Operating SYSTEM." I have no CD titled "Utilities." "Applications" CD should do. See, if Easy CD Creator is there. If so, uninstall current version, and install fresh copy. Thanks for your suggestion. I had never UNINSTALLED and reinstalled a program, so I learned something. However, I'm encountering the same problem after the re-installation of Easy CD Creator 5 Basic. After clicking on "format" and waiting a few minutes the following message appears; "Illegal request. Drive reported an error with a command it received, please. You will not be able to read or write to the CD through drive letter access." And the hourglass icon remains on the screen until I close out the program. I know that some kind of process is going on when I try to close out because each step takes longer than normal. Maybe you have another suggestion or insight? Thanks again. You could DLoad and try CDBurner XPro which is FREE... but they rarely workI'm glad, it worked for you |

I am not sure if I still have the Cd's that came with this computer when I bought it or not.Since this is Windows XP, Windows ME CD won't do. Turn computer off. Open the case, ground yourself, and re-seat RAM, and video card (if separate). Use compressed air can to clean inside. Restart again.Same thing happened to me not to long ago with a friends comp. The only thing i found that worked was reformatting the hard drive. I posted in allot of forums and still everything that was recommended did not work. In the end reformatting was it. Works great ever since Thanks Broni, I will try that when I get home and see if that works. If not and I do need to reformat like Acefsj said, how would I go about doing that since I cant get it to RESPOND to anything in the first place? I will post on here tomorrow night and let you know how it went..Thanks again!!We'll be here ok...I started it up to see whats going on again and .....mysteriously it came up like normal?? I didnt do anything at all to it. I took it apart anyway and cleaned it. Thanks for all of your help! This looks like a GOOD place to go for help. I will be on here again I am sure. Thanks again!Things like this happen. I'm glad, it worked for you You should consider backup strategy, if you don't have one. |

Solve : Run a Ventrilo Server off of my Domain?? |
Answer» I regestered a DOMAIN quite a while AGO, way before I learned about Ventrilo. Solve : Selecting a software to run a program? |
Answer» You know when you install a new program (lets say photoshop example) and they have their own format (in this example PSD). If you have a psd file and you open it a pop up will prompt you giving you two OPTIONS. 1: Use the internet to look for a suitable program to RUN this file. 2: Pick a program from the computer to run this file. You know when you pick option 2 there is a box saying "Always use this program to run this type of file" if I tick tick that and pick photoshop later on how can I change that psd file in to type of file (unknown format type), Hope you understand =\Use "Open With..." and select browse. Are you asking how to make Windows forget which program to use or do you just want to change the icon? Ahh thank you. It was the first one I was trying to find out about. |

Solve : Pixilated icons? |
Answer» I'm using XP-SP2 and IE8. Recently, all the icons on the desktop, menu bar, and in apps like Word and IE have stopped displaying correctly. Instead of an image, they are just an outline of dots. If I click on one of them, it sometimes restores to the correct image, but others around it do not. This is also affecting the text on buttons. Any idea what's going wrong? |

Solve : Registry recovery error? |
Answer» Every time I turn on and log in my computer for the last couple years I always get this message: Arghhhhhhhhhhh! That didn't work! I followed the websites directions but they had professional Setup, I only have home edition. 1. Which Link. I'm assuming it was the "How-to-repair-Windows-XP" link. This might actually be a good thing. If you really have two copies of Windows XP installed (I hope they're on separate partitions), then with any luck the "original" installation hasn't been disturbed. I don't know why they would load slow (both of them?) unless the hard drive has low free space. 2. Error Message. a. Ignoring the slowness, does the new installation from CD ALSO present the "error message" you're trying to eliminate? b. Has the "error message" always been present with the original Window XP? c. And the "error message" began after the "Shutdown computer" link was added to the desktop? Right away? 3. Post contents of "boot.ini" file to this thread. You may cut and paste CONTENT - just don't delete it. (It's relatively easy to remove second Windows XP from operating system selection menu, but we need to know how/where it was installed to remove its installed files.) a. "Start" Menu -> right click "My Computer" -> left click "Properties". b. Left click "Advanced" tab -> within "Startup and Recovery" section, left click "Settings". c. Within "System startup" section, left click "Edit" button. d. Use cursor to select entire contents of edit box ("boot.ini" file). e. Cut selected text (Ctrl-C), then paste to this thread (Ctrl-V). Note: Do not delete the original text. f. Use "Cancel" button on "Startup and Recovery" and "System Properties" dialog boxes to back out of them.First off yes it was the repair XP link. I printed the directions but it didn't give the messages that it was showing and before i could say stop it was installing windows xp again on my computer. No its not on a different partition its on my c: drive along with the old one with the error message. Yes, the error message has disappeared on the new version but when I log on to the original it is still there. I am sure the slow loading is from free space being used up with 2 versions (my free space has been tricky for awhile since I have kids loading programs that use alot of space). My internet on that computer is not able to work properly now so I am using my laptop to respond Here is what showed up on the boot.ini note pad screen: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fastdetect I think that answered all the questions. If not ask again. Thanks! but Help! This means you didn't follow the instructions... I've never had a Repair Install go bad.1. Backup Data. Good time to back up any "data" files you can't afford to lose. I'm not comfortable with parallel operating system installations to same partition. 2. Fresh Install. Okay - the error message does not show up from new install. 3. Which One. The "boot.ini" indicates two operating systems installed on the same disk partition: one to "c:\windows", another to "c:\winnt". You may edit the identification strings "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" to whatever you want. So carefully modify one (or both of them), so when you subsequently reboot, you can identify which one is installed where. 4. Keep One. After you decide which one to eliminate, edit the boot.ini file: a. [boot loader] - Within this section, ensure the "directory name" at the end of the "default=..." string reflects the one you're keeping; either "WINDOWS" or "WINNT". b. [operating systems] - Within this section, delete the line representing the operating system you no longer want. c. Save the edits (by exiting with OK?). Note: If the file contains a single operating system invocation line within the [operating systems] section, the operating system selection menu will no longer display during system startup. 5. Free Disk Space. Reboot (should automatically boot to remaining entry in boot.ini). Verify it's the right one. (You have access to your important data). Delete the "directory" subtree of the one you no longer want (c:\WINDOWS or c:\WINNT ?) to "free" the disk space. Reboot, check free space on disk. Thanks sooooooo much for the help. I found the new install and kept it since it was without the registry error. No sense going to all this work if I didn't fix the initial problem. I made sure I backed up on my external drive everything I wanted just in case. It seems to work now I am just figuring out how to get my programs to automatically run that did before like Intgernet security and my wireless modem program. So Thank you thank you! |

Solve : Ctrl,Alt,Delete? |
Answer» Quote from: pimvdh on October 01, 2009, 08:03:16 AM If you are goin to format, make sure you don't do a fast format.... because fast format doesn't delete all error on the partition. Why do you think there are hd errors? There's no reason not to do a quick format for the problems he's having.before i learned about computer stuff, the way i solved my problems was to do a re format of my hard drive. so i am very good at doing this lol lol Quote tuneup utilities, ccleaner, glary utilities pro, xoftspy se, regcure, pc fixer adaware, and window washer gee I can't figure out where these problems are coming from Almost all of the those are rogue tools... xoftspy SE being one for sure. the only one I can SAY is 100% FINE is CCleaner. So it's no wonder you've managed to get "infected"... the "tools" your using to prevent getting infected are an infection of their own in some cases! how can i be infected im using MalwareBytes and Super AntiSpyware pro also, every scan i have done shows not infected with anything. When BC says "infected" he doesn't mean "viral infection", he means that those apps you are using cause as many problems as they claim to fix - more in some cases. well i have had no problems until a few days ago when i did updates through microsoft. i am about ready to trash all my microsoft stuff and go back to linuxOkaypimvdh i'm not a newb, and there is nothing wrong with quick format, i think you need to brush up on your computer knowledge and thx allan for all your help Quote from: METALDIK2112 on October 01, 2009, 10:04:24 AM pimvdhThat's not needed. First, nobody cares if you're a newbie or not. Second, you posted a question and people are TRYING to help. You can choose to follow the advice or ignore it, but there's no need to be defensive and strike out at someone, even if his advice is less than great. And by the way - in my book someone who calls Task Manager "CTRL-ALT-DEL" or resorts to formatting as a problem solving tool is less than computer savvy sorry wont happen again, i was just tired from all the other fourms that i have been on the last few days giving conflicting advice. calling task manager is just out of habit, and formatting to solve my problems was done that way along time ago back in the late 80s, and thanks for that cool link in your sig. i will be checking out that tweak site later. oh and by the way whats a good list of apps do you think are best to use at all times if i may ask?*cuts in front* May I have this dance? The last tool you could try is 'Microsoft's Malicious SOFTWARE Removal Tool.' Go To Run > Type "MRT" This will scan and fix a number of issues. As reformatting? I call that my fix all. Nuking the drive and restarting will fix all software junk. At least that way you can be sure something will be fixed, INSTEAD of slowly backing away hoping it stays working. Nothing wrong with a clean install. As for this junk? Quote tuneup utilities, ccleaner, glary utilities pro, xoftspy se, regcure, pc fixer adaware, and window washer DON'T. Most of it is junk you don't need. Considering you have so many programs that THINK they can play and alter the registry makes a clean install even more recommended. thx griff i forgot all about mrt, i will try that now. I suggest the following as anti-malware protection: spyware blaster (provides passive protection) - free if you manually update (you should do so weekly) MalwareBytes and/or Super AntiSpyware (free to run scans, paid version if you keep it resident) A GOOD anti-virus utility always kept resident (I use Kaspersky, but there are many good ones - both free and paid) That's all I use, but there is nothing that beats "smart computing" (always know the sites to which you navigate, never open links in emails unless you know the sender, etc).Microsoft also released their own Malware tool called "Microsoft Security Essentials." It's a free program that just came out... yeserday? People who tried the Beta have said its pretty good if not great, so you can use that as well. (Remember, only 1 antivirus can be installed at a time!) I can't wait to see more in depth reviews of it. thx allan, and mrt did not find anything griff. thx for all your help i'm logging off now very tired. |

Solve : long starting time, high CPU usage with AAWservice.exe & avgrsx.exe on startup? |
Answer» Sorry for the long subject line, but that about sums things up. Disk Cleanup... I guess this will be ignored...patio, Why so negative? I already have the max amount of RAM, and I think I've removed any obvious apps that I don't need (although who is to say when there are hidden things?). I will look into eliminating the startup garbage, though. Defragging has been on my mind, and since my OS is Japanese, it is not always easy to go through instructions, even with my Japanese wife, but I will try in the near future. Allan, Malwarebytes is already installed. I used to have Superantispyware, too, but I felt I had too much protection at one time. I'm sorry, but I didn't look today to see what was sucking all the CPU. Will do that tomorrow. What's weirder is that I set up 2 accounts (me, my wife) a couple of weeks ago, and there is a totally DIFFERENT number of items on the task manager when I check either account. The original account I had (now my wife's) has about 40 items on it, including the system idle process, but my second account (mine) has about a dozen items and NO system idle process! Broni, Will post that with Allan's request on my next post. Thanks for the instructions.Glen - I wasn't suggesting running both spyware apps resident. There's no harm in scanning with both though, since no one utility gets everything. |

Solve : .swf? |
Answer» Hi, I need a WAY to start .swf files full screen from command prompt or visual basic. It would be great if there were no toolbars at all. I don't care if I have to use any extra programs. I also need to be able to close it from a keyboard short cut other than alt+F4. |

Solve : BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH....PLEASE HELP!!!!? |
Answer» Hello; My computer is badly infected. I'm typing from another computer. I was going through the steps or removing malware and then proceeded to the self help section to follow the steps there. To do the steps I was downloading the tools to a flash drive and then transferring them to the infected computer. Things were going ok, but now I can't get passed a blue screen of death that reads: I checked C:\WINDOWS\Minidump and the folder is emptyHow if: Quote I can't get passed a blue screen of death that reads1) The correct way to run CHECKDISK in Windows XP is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r 2) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182 I can't seem to be able to fix it. Can anyone please help me? Here is what I keep getting: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a DRIVER is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode. Technical Information: *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8059D635, 0xF8A0C688, 0xF8A0C384) Did you go to the microsoft page I posted? And that is not the entire stop error that you posted. Please post the ENTIRE error message.Hi; I'm not getting the blue screen anymore and I'm back on square 1, which is what brought me here to beging with. I have the 'Total Security' bug in my computer . As soon as I log on a 'scan' screen comes on. I'm unable to perform the steps to remove the malware, can't get the task MANAGER to work, get on the Internet or run any antivirus. I guess I'll have to post on the appropirate threat now to see if I can get any help. So, this thread can now be closed. THANKS SO MUCH!!!1STOP 0x0000007E (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) STOP 0x0000008E (KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) These two errors INDICATE that a program running in the kernel encountered an unexpected condition it could not recover from. They have identical troubleshooting and resolution steps, and you will probably need to use the Windows Debugger to find out what caused the error. Things to check: *If the Blue Screen message mentions a driver or library file, figure out what driver or APPLICATION that file is part of and update or disable it. *Update the system BIOS to the latest available revision. *Uninstall any recently installed programs, and roll-back any recently installed drivers. *Run diagnostics on the computer's memory. |

Solve : Isntalled Windows and now cant connect to the internet? |
Answer» I have a gateway desktop 500 PIII. It came preinstalled with windows 98 when I bought it. Now i have another gateway desktop that has win xp on it. I used that disk to install winxp on my computer that had win 98. But now I cant connect to the internet. There is no network adapter listed under device manager and nothing in internet connections. I went to the gateway website to see if they had any drivers, but all the drivers listed for my computer (the 500 PIII) are for win 95,98,2000 and nt. I dont see anything for xp. So how do I connect it to the internet I doubt that the reason is that a computer that used to previously have win98 can never work with win xp. So where can I find a suitable driver and how would I know if it is suitable. Gateway is not obliged to SUPPORT old hardware that was never used with XP. When they went to Windows 2000 they may have decided that that hardware was at the 'end of life' point. So they never made a driver for XP. If it was not on the XP CD, it means they never had a XP driver for it or did not release it. Is that too hard to understand?hmmm okay. Quote all the drivers listed for my computer (the 500 PIII) are for win 95,98,2000 and nt. Try the 2000 driver If that doesn't work, install everest. http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html Open it, click Computer, then Summary. In upper MENU, go Report>Quick Report-Summary Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post. Don't include anything under line Debug - PCII wsan'tQuote from: shashgo on September 27, 2009, 06:37:20 PM maybe, although I doubt that it is a license issue, cause I have another computer that had an OS that I transferred to a different computer, and it worked. I did have to install the drivers from the computer manufacturer website, which I have to do anyway when I reinstall an OS on the computer on which it was preinstalled earlier.I wasn't suggest that was the problem, only that it is a violation of the EULAAllan, From my experience, you might be able to install Windows XP on another system that was not licensed for it. Windows would then give you 30 days to d register the system with Microsoft. In some cases MS may ask you to buy a new license. In any case, I don;t think that was his problem. I understood his problem was a missing driver. My guess was that gateway never used that piece of hardware on a system that went out the door with XP on it.actually i got a driver that I was able to use. Its a USB driver, and when i converted the ethernet plug to a USB plug it all worked.Installing another OS to another system can detect errors on the computer. This is because, there were OS that was been having a license that can only be detected to its corresponding system. |

Solve : help with windows xp installation please? |
Answer» Hi. I have windows xp sp3 installed on my computer. I reformatted my computer but the files did not get formatted. How do I get rid of these files in the reformatting process. I have tried over and over again but they remain. With no offense intended to Dusty, let's not make this more complicated than it is. Certainly no offense taken. Perhaps I'm overly cautious in always WANTING to know the environment I'm trying to advise on. The next time someone is advised to format a recovery partition won't be the first time. Quote from: windowsxphelp I reformatted my computer but the files did not get formatted...... i have figured out its because im not booting from the cd but from the xp thats already installed. At the level of knowledge displayed by WinXPhelp in CLAIMING to have formatted his/her computer it would not be a surprise if the XP cd being used is not a full install disk. Let's hope that the advice given is correct. Cheers & good luck. Quote from: Dusty on September 27, 2009, 05:59:03 PM Let's hope that the advice given is correct. That's uncalled for.Quote from: Allan on September 28, 2009, 05:35:44 AM That's uncalled for. A bit touchy? We both gave much the same advice within 2 seconds of each other i.e. to boot from the XP cd and format within the install process and I still hope the advice given is correct. |

Solve : smart hard drive disc A? |
Answer» I TURNED on my computer windows xp this morning, complete screen had MESSAGE Disc A smart hard drive is bad needs to be replced immediatly? I am very unfamiliar with a smart hard drive and need to know how to rectify this PROBLEM, i am assuming I can and will lose INFO if not replaced, I have a Compaq presario, can you direct me in the right direction? thank youWelcome to the CH forums. According the S.M.A.R.T. specifications, when a problem is detected (failure predicted), the hard disk should work for at least 24 hours to perform the data backup. But in many cases this time is not enough - that's why it is IMPORTANT to recognize problems and prepare before it's too late. |
