Solve : cannot restore computer after sims3? |
Answer» i got the sims3 in june after it came out. it ran fine until the launcher did an update to the game from the website. was able to download custom content and use the forums, but loads of people have similar(sp) problems with the game launcher but i worked around not being able to open the game without it by going in what i call the back door, at least we called it that when i was young. anyway i have windows xp professional sp 3, 64 bit. the guy that built the computer for me disabled the internet explorer and put in mozilla firefox. not sure how to re enable it, tried downloading the newest VERSION of internet explorer but i keep getting errors when i try opening it and frankly have given up on it and have learned to accept using mozilla up until this point. i wandered, sorry. anyway after several TIMES of installing and UNINSTALLING sims 3, going thru manual uninstall, backing up files onto a flash drive and defragging and still not being able to get it to work right i decided i might as well go to system restore and go to before i did the very first install. no dice, the computer will not restore, errors in windows and it informs me it cannot perform the task, and there is not restore point before june of this year even THOUGH i have had the compter for 2 years. i do not have the windows xp disc and the guy that built the computer left town. i can still get on the internet with mozilla although not to anything that needs the explorer, so i don't even know if i can uninstall firefox. i went to a computer fix it store and the man told me to format the system, which i am pretty sure that takes the disc. i have updated all the drivers on here from links provided from sims 3 website and went to ati and optimized the dual core processor. i have 3 hard drives totalling 120 gb and 1.99 gb ram with amd athlon 64X2 dual core processor 4200+ |

Solve : cant start disk defragmenter? |
Answer» HP pavilion a420n running win XP. When I try to r un disk s efragmenter,l it just gives me a box saying disk defragmenter COULD not start Can you tell me how much free space you have on your hard drive please.Agreed. Also, have you used disk defrag before (just want to know if it ever worked)Try this To resolve the problem, force a reinstallation of the disk defragmenter engine: 1. Navigate to the %SystemRoot%\INF FOLDER (Start, Run, %SystemRoot%\INF) and click OK. 2. Right-click the dfrg.inf file and press Install. I will try out the suggestions. I have used the disk defragmenter before, but ever since I got a virus, the computer has been working slow and disk defrag not operational. I removed the virus. The computer has 76% of its hard disk free Didn't you think it was important to mention the virus? Quote from: Allan on September 21, 2009, 01:57:52 PM Didn't you think it was important to mention the virus? Heh it would of been an integral part of the problem *SIGH* Download Malwarebytes and SAS Run full scans and see what comes up you may also want to try AVG If you have no anti-virus software |

Solve : Java issues? |
Answer» Hi Perhaps its me i dont know, but since 3 days ago i can only read some newspaper websites with Java Script turned off. Twas never an issue before. If i turn java script off, i can read the stories but not the comments and if i turn it back on the page wont load. Firefox new version as i deleated it then downloaded the new one in case that was problem. Also tried Opera but was so slow i deleated it again!Don't understand this post at all.OK let me start again, untill a few days ago my computer was fine, then it would not load some pages on newspaper websites. It loads the front page but when you click on a story it freezes up. If you disable Java Scrip it loads but without comments made by readers. Unfortunatly as my wife uses Hotmail, she needs Java Script running so i cant just leave it off, and clearly there is a problem. So i started by getting the latest Firefox, in case that was the problem, it made no difference, so i tried Opera which just ran so slow i gave up and deleated it, tried IE and it is the same as Firefox, so i decided to try a Java update, still makes no difference. I am currently going through the steps on the read this before requesting malware removal help page as i am now guessing this must be the problem? Do you see my problem now or am i just not getting it right? Okay, got it . A COUPLE of things. First, you said this just started the other day. Did anything new HAPPEN between the last time everything was okay and the first time it wasn't (new hw, sw, etc)? Also, I'd like to ask you to please run a full system scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware (or both). Hi Allen THANKS I cant think of anything but, asking wife is like trying to get blood out of stone as "I always blame her"!!! Ran my Avast Anti Virus nothing, ran Microsoft Malicious software removal tool, nothing. Tried Malwarebytes, nothing (though did not update so trying that next!). SuperAnti-Spyware has just this second stopped and has 3 items all Trojan.Agent/Gen-Fake Alert(X32) so just going to deal with that before updating Malwarebytes and running that as per the malware page? Am I doing ok so far? Thanks TerryYou're doing great - but you really need to stop blaming your wife for everything This is the final log from Hijack this, I have posted it to the Malware page also. Any clues what i do next??? Solve : Installer service? |
Answer» I am trying to install some programs in my computer including the LAN driver and I keep GETTING the message that the WINDOWS Installer SERVICE cannot be accessed. I says it may be because I'm in Safe MODE (which I'm not). How do I correct this problem?GO to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Do you see the WINDOWS INSTALLER service listed? Make sure it's not set to "disabled" (it can be "manual" or "automatic" - either is fine). |

Even my Norton security software was disable after update. I have to call Norton to re install security software. The technician told me that it happend with other people also.Norton's my first suspect on ANY slow machine...whether it's having issues or not.It seems to start as soon as the updates are installed and when the request for a restart is made the pc takes a very long time to load the desktop icons.....Didn't mean to hijack this.....just a little input.Yes Norton takes up lots of resources but I paid money for Norton and do not want to change. Do you think I should change to some other security software? I was using Norton 360 for a while but it created lots of problems so I uninstall 360 and install Norton security 2009 software. Good thing about this software is that the service calls are fre.Yeah, I agree, must be either some update, or Norton, or both. Nothing malicious there. There was another problem with Yahoo messenger, when you turn off computer the yahoo messenger want turn off. You have to manually turn off yaho messenger. So I uninstall yahoo messenger.Try this test.... Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in: msconfig Click OK (hit Enter in Vista). Click on Startup tab. Click Disable all IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries. Click Services tab. Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services Click Disable all. Click OK. Restart computer in Normal Mode. NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running. If you use Windows firewall, you're fine. Same problem? After getting all the important updates today for the Vista 64bit machine today the re-boot was well over 20 minutes... Your machine? Were there any updates today, or you just postponed them? |

Solve : Computer will not start up? |
Answer» HI, A couple of days ago , I started up my laptop, but the screen stayed black and nothing else happened. My dad got it working yesterday somehow, he said that he just held the power button down for longer, but today I tried it again and my laptop just won't START up. Any help is greatly appreciated. --William.More info on your system, OS, and any problems prior to this and someone will be along shortly to assist.I have an IBM Thinkpad and I use Windows XP Proffessional. Problems prior to this were that my COMPUTER would shut down if it wasn't plugged in, and it would come back on by itself if I TURNED it on hibernate or STANDBY mode. Hope that helps. It's very possible that laptop battery is getting ready to take a dump...try the machine with just the AC power and see if it does the same thing. |

Solve : Wallpaper Won't Individualize!? |
Answer» Silly question...EMBARRASSED that it has me stumped. Running Windows XP Home Edition, both my wife and I have separate accounts, both as "administrators," and now (all of a sudden) whenever ONE of us selects a favorite photo (jpeg) to use as the Desktop wallpaper, it applies that change to both my desktop and hers (instead of allowing us to each have our own desktop wallpaper). What's up with that?!AH....never mind.....I figured it out. When using ACDSee software to find, select and assign the pic as "wallpaper," the "Display" function (in Conrtol Panel)only allowed for one "ACD Wallpaper." Thus, if both accounts used ACDSee to accomplish the wallpaper setting, it would apply to both accounts. However, if the pic is selected and assigned as wallpaper by a different MEANS (Windows Explorer, the Internet, etc.), it is allowed as a separate entry in Display and the two accounts can have their own separate wallpapers.Correct...after ACDSee has created them you have to GO to that directory and rename them each time. |

Answer» I get this message while browsing certain website: This page provides potential unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running control in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly. What does this MEAN? What is the cause? And how to settle it? Thanks.Do a search in the forum and on google for activeX. It may be something you do not want running on your computer. Safety vs. viewing certain web sites is a CHOICE you will have to make. You might want to try Firefox, or another browser that is not susceptible to Active X allowed intrusions.I visited Active-X.com but they CHARGE for support...What do you want so bad that REQUIRES you to compromise your security with Active X???As the error message suggests: As a result, this page may not display correctly Any page with images will load till the sunrise and sunset after the message pop-up. I need to close all browser windows and reopen the page to make it display normally. Sometimes I EVEN have to restart my PC. |

Answer» 325is.....Here's what some research has turned up ....... F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe O23 - Service: Windows Overlay Components - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\errlkqb.exe (file missing) These must be removed.....and I think you have removed them before , however they seem to be coming back as the result of the "Nail.exe" Nail .exe is a trojan ..... this is what it's about ....... Got Aurora? Nail.exe? Here is who you can thank for your misery: http://www.direct-revenue.com/news6.php Direct Revenue Launches Aurora New Ad Client Affords Greater Brand Visibility, More Efficient Distribution New York, New York – April 26, 2005 – Direct Revenue today announced the launch of its NEWEST ad client, Aurora™. The Aurora ad client is designed to improve product visibility and consumer services. The roll out of the upgrade to the DR behavioral NETWORK began on April 5th by replacing outdated ad clients in an effort to improve consumer awareness. Like other DR ad client brands such as “SolidPeer”, released in September ‘04 and “Ceres” released in November ‘05, the Aurora Ad Client is compliant with the branding and removal standards of all major proposed Federal legislation relating to online contextual ads such as HR 2929. it has installed a reg entry in to softwaremicrosoftwindows ntcurrentversionwinlogon “Shell” and Shell=Explorer.exe C:WINDOWSNail.exe it also keeps creating files in windowsprefetch with a random serise of letters and the same random serise also appears in the system process’ an example being xgoudno.exe which i then end so i can try to delete the prefetch file but then renames its self to something like ahilwj.exe if running outside of safe mode it also installs a programme called aurora.exe which then produces the pop ups out of the normal browser window. I am running “hijackthis” “norton AV 2005” “adaware personal SE” and none of these seem able to deal with the threat effeciently. This indeed a real nasty ......... however , I also found this which may do the job ....... Do not, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, use mypctuneup.com. It is owned by Direct Revenue LCC, the same company that produces Aurora. In an article by a LEGITIMATE anti-spyware company, it is stated, "None of the installed programs [of Direct Revenue, including Aurora and mypctuneup] have INFORMATION that identifies them as a product of Direct Revenue, nor do the programs have the brand name of Ceres or Aurora clearly identified in the executable files. One of its running programs uses a randomly generated file name [your gmbgklixrp, tash] so it is impossible to tell what the file does. The others are named in vague or deceptive ways such as "System Startup Service" or "Nail.exe". (http://www.pcpitstop.com/news/drnotice.asp) Mypctuneup will remove nail.exe, but will make many more problems for your computer. In the licensing agreement before INSTALLING mypctuneup, you allow the installation of a web bug. Also, you consent for your "non-personal information", including IP address, ISP, domain, to be recorded. The legitimate, well reviewed (by cnet and pcmagazine) program Webroot Spy Sweeper can be used to quarantine and nullify the effects of Aurora (use the 30 day trial). Webroot Spy Sweeper 14 day free trial ....... http://www.download.com/3000-8022_4-10192729.html I have D/l and tested Spysweeper and it is fully functional and may just do the trick ....... Please let us know how it goes as this nasty has infected 1000s of machines . dl65 dl65 thank you so for that info, i downloaded spysweeper, and it did the trick. thank you everybody for your help.. This is another PROBLEM sovled by this website.... you have no idea how happy i am right now, Thanks for all your help everybody.325is..... Solve : Virus or Malware? |
Answer» I am RUNNIN windows xp and it is updated fully. I recently bought a router and with it I received a free 60 day trial of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet SECURITY. I installed it and in this version it actually does a pre scan. No viruses were found and it installed just fine. After restarting my computer, I tried to open Norton and it wont open. When i try to visit the symantec website, i am REDIRECTED to a search page or it gives me a message that the site is unavailable. the same thing happens when i try to visit mcafee's site also. I tried to run norton in safe MODE and it keeps telling me that i need to restart before running norton. i've restarted it like a million times and norton still wont load. It's like something is hijacking my computer and not letting me run norton or visit the sites to try and update my virus files or see what's going on. I do have kazaa lite on my computer also.Any ideas on how to get this off my comp?Lose the Norton. Even at free, it's no bargain. AVG Free is safer and less hungry for system resources. Google for it.http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3110.htmlHow to REMOVE kazaa Lose the Norton. Even at free, it's no bargain. AVG Free is safer and less hungry for system resources. Google for it. Solve : heard of errorguard?? |
Answer» HI, I was WONDERING if it's safe to use errorguard. Because what happened was i accidentally click on it and downloaded on my laptop and the very strange THING is that i shut it down because not sure if it's safe to install it but this morning when i RESTART my computer. It's actually installed it itself. My question is that is it safe to run this software. I know that this is a freeware but just for a peace of mind, double check it with you guys. Thank you very much and look forward to hearing from youI did some quick research and it looks very fishy. I'd recommend removing it. There are better ways to protect your computer.ErrorGuard is known adware. Removal instructions are here: http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=1763 DellI find that it is better to use a drive image to safeguard your installation. Errorguard has been described as dangerous and dubious. |

Solve : Rebuilding Problems? |
Answer» Ok, Im trying to rebuild a computer for the 1st time, and Im having some problems. I think that would be his best possible chance Mac. Exactly! It would be interesting to know. Looks like new partitions and a clean install though. Ok, Im up and running! I re-installed windows, and everything is A-OK. Thanks for the advice! One wierd thing, when I was trying to boot up from the floppy, it was giving me the option to boot from the hard drive, CD or floppy. It asked me to select 1, 2, or 3, but my USB port keyboard wouldn't work (the same thing happened when I tried to get into safe-mode). I had to dust off the old PS-2 keyboard to make the CHOICE. Again, thanks. BTW: the new rig is FAST!Tarmac...Quote but my USB port keyboard wouldn't work That's because at that point you had no USB drivers installed . Glad to hear things are working well. dl65 Another reason to always have a PS2 keyboard lying around... patio. |

Solve : preventing a 60 minute time out!? |
Answer» ok so heres what gets me, everytime i play an online GAME, i have 60 minutes before it causes me to log out for no reason! so i have to log BACK in and play but then after another 60 minutes it does the same thing! how do i PREVENT the 60 minute time out?Buy it. Quote Buy it. no it happens on all games. even bought ones. its a computer problem not the game problem. Is it as regular as clockwork? What computer make/model, processor, RAM, power SUPPLY, graphics card, sound card, game involved, etc. It is only this one game?it's pretty much every game i play. I have 60 minutes of gameplay from the time i log in. I have a Cable Modem connection. and an E-Machine (i know they suck but it works pretty good). Maybe theres some setting on my computer, ive tried everything but so far i cant find out why. What if you're not gaming at all, just surfing the net, playing Solitaire, whatever? If gaming only it may be a heat problem. What games, how demanding and what is your hardware setup? Are these games run from the CD?Could it be that your router is kicking you out? Try logging on to it and look for a setting a la "DHCP lease time". From http://www.comptechdoc.org/independent/networking/guide/netdhcp.html - DHCP Lease Renewal After 50% of the lease time has passed, the client will attempt to renew the lease with the original DHCP server that it obtained the lease from using a DHCPREQUEST message. Any time the client boots and the lease is 50% or more passed, the client will attempt to renew the lease. At 87.5% of the lease completion, the client will attempt to contact any DHCP server for a new lease. If the lease expires, the client will send a request as in the initial boot when the client had no IP address. If this fails, the client TCP/IP stack will cease functioning. The games I know that kick out every 60 minutes are Ragnarok, Knight Online, and Ultima Online. Doubt it is a heat problem, I just think there is some significance to the 60 minute time out. the DHPC didn't WORK. I don't play solitare so I wouldn't know.OK, i figured out what the problem was, the only problem now is solving it. It seems to be a watchdog timeout error. It is caused by SNA Server Keepalives on Idle LAN Connections. The only problem is, how do I set it to not start over every 60 minutes? |

Solve : Configuring XP , SP2 Firewall? |
Answer» Is it enough to just "enable" the Microsoft XP SP2 firewall. Is it time to break out her "Recovery Disks"?Based on what you have said ......I would say yes ... Quote With the XP SP2 firewall how can this be prvented from happening again?I don't believe it was the lack of a firewall that did in the machine , but rather the absence of a anti virus ...... REMEMBER Windows firewall is just that A firewall , which only blocks incoming threats ....it is not a anti virus ....... I would be installing a AV app such as AVG or Avast . dl65 I guess I did not say it right about installing Avast. It was installed immediately after removing the Norton system that came with the Dell, which was about a week ago. Then my son just put a check mark in the box for enabling the XP, SP2 firewall after removing Norton's program. Is there anything that can be set better for not letting this happen again after doing the re-install? I think she gets her e-mail through AOL. Will or can the firewall be set to protect e-mail? I think Avast can be set to scan e-mail, right? Thanks.Fordtruckmaniac..... Ok, if I understand the sequence of events , the Norton Security trial (90 day probably ) expired . Norton Security , includes both a anti virus and a firewall. So this software was removed and the machine had no AV installed for a period of time until Avast free version was downloaded .......Thats probably when the machine BECAME infected . Turning on the Firewall that is included in SP2 from microsoft would have had no effect on the machine as far as preventing the virus attack. So if the pc wont boot up in normal mode , it is time to run the recovery disks .........and once its back to normal ....make sure that the anti virus that is installed is up to date ......in fact , if they dont have Avast on a cd ..... they should use another pc and D/L either Avast or AVG and burn it onto a disk . Then they can load that disk onto the Dell and they will have virus protection and can safely go on-line. Hope this helps you. dl65 You have it all correct but the time from deletion of Norton to installing Avast. Avast was loaded immediately after the deletion of Norton. Which your right, was still an open window for a little bit. She has a highspeed wireless IP and it took just a couple minutes maybe, to load it. But my son ran Avast in the boot scan mode, including checking archive files, right after installation of Avast and it found nothing. And after running Avast when it was acting up, it is really messed up now. In safe mode now all you get is a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners. No start menu, icons, nothing. just the error MESSAGE "win" SOMETHING, "dll missing files" then doing a re-install to fix the problem. I may actually have it Sunday to look at. I myself, do have Avast burned on a disk that I use to install it without being online unprotected. So it will get used after the re-install. Thanks. |

Solve : windows media and itunes won't play cds? |
Answer» I have an hp pavilion ze4200 with the windows xp program. Lately, every time I have tried to play a cd or a dvd on the computer even with windows MEDIA or itunes running, it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone TELL me what's wrong? Is there a file missing? ps- they're real cds and dvds not copied or burned or anything like thatTry going in to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...find the CD drive(s) and right clik them. SELECT Remove and hit Enter. You will get a warning message ignore it. On re-boot WinXP will re-install the drivers and you should be good to go... patio. ok, but right now I'm reinstalling windows media player, would that work? As Patio said, you should REINSTALL your drive and the drivers. You said that itunes was also not working, so fixing or reinstalling Win Media Player would not fix that problem. There's a lot of malware going around, some from reputable SOURCES such as Sony. Make sure you regularly scan for them. Dellwhat cd drives? I'm really clueless about computers |
