Solve : cannot restore computer after sims3?

Answer»

i got the sims3 in june after it came out. it ran fine until the launcher did an update to the game from the website. was able to download custom content and use the forums, but loads of people have similar(sp) problems with the game launcher but i worked around not being able to open the game without it by going in what i call the back door, at least we called it that when i was young. anyway i have windows xp professional sp 3, 64 bit. the guy that built the computer for me disabled the internet explorer and put in mozilla firefox. not sure how to re enable it, tried downloading the newest VERSION of internet explorer but i keep getting errors when i try opening it and frankly have given up on it and have learned to accept using mozilla up until this point. i wandered, sorry. anyway after several TIMES of installing and UNINSTALLING sims 3, going thru manual uninstall, backing up files onto a flash drive and defragging and still not being able to get it to work right i decided i might as well go to system restore and go to before i did the very first install. no dice, the computer will not restore, errors in windows and it informs me it cannot perform the task, and there is not restore point before june of this year even THOUGH i have had the compter for 2 years. i do not have the windows xp disc and the guy that built the computer left town. i can still get on the internet with mozilla although not to anything that needs the explorer, so i don't even know if i can uninstall firefox. i went to a computer fix it store and the man told me to format the system, which i am pretty sure that takes the disc. i have updated all the drivers on here from links provided from sims 3 website and went to ati and optimized the dual core processor. i have 3 hard drives totalling 120 gb and 1.99 gb ram with amd athlon 64X2 dual core processor 4200+
any thoughts or ideas i would be most grateful on this as i am getting totally frustrated with this. thank youHave you tried to run an anti virus. Don't format the drive as you will erase everything and you said you don't have the xp disk, you would then be screwd.yes i have run the anti virus, disc clean up and de fraggedIs this the Sharpie version of Sims 3 ? ?no this is just the regular version that came out in stores for $49

Solve : Computer keeps coming out of standby by itself?

Answer»

This started happening right after I ran a full system recovery.
I have researched this QUESTIONS for HOURS, but the only thing that seems to keep it in standby is to DISABLE my network. This is inconvenient, and was HOPING that there was some other way of fixing this problem.
I heard that if your computer is updating that this can happen, but my computer is not.My feeling is that neither standby nor hibernate works properly for everyone (though it works fine for some). Instead, I suggest SETTING your display and hd to power down after a defined period of inactivity. It will work and it uses fewer resources than the other choices.I don't understand why it worked perfectly fine before I did the system restore. What caused you to do the restore?I was told by a few people on another forum that the fastest way to fix my problems were to do a full system restore, which I regret.
The problem wasn't even that big.
Basically, it was a problem with web pages and videos not loading.Go into BIOS and disable Wake on LAN.

Solve : cant start disk defragmenter?

Answer»

HP pavilion a420n running win XP. When I try to r un disk s efragmenter,l it just gives me a box saying disk defragmenter COULD not start

how do i fix this
you can use auslogics disk defrag its free and works well. http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/downloadCan you tell me how much free space you have on your hard drive please.

Bobgar34 let's try and solve the issue rather than just give alternatives. There is obviously a problem if Win defrag will not run.Quote from: Mulreay on September 21, 2009, 12:03:28 PM

Agreed.

Also, have you used disk defrag before (just want to know if it ever worked)Try this To resolve the problem, force a reinstallation of the disk defragmenter engine:

1. Navigate to the %SystemRoot%\INF FOLDER (Start, Run, %SystemRoot%\INF) and click OK.
2. Right-click the dfrg.inf file and press Install.
I will try out the suggestions.

I have used the disk defragmenter before, but ever since I got a virus, the computer has been working slow and disk defrag not operational. I removed the virus.

The computer has 76% of its hard disk free
Didn't you think it was important to mention the virus? Quote from: Allan on September 21, 2009, 01:57:52 PM

Solve : Windows XP or Windows Vista?

Answer»

okay then. I'll get a Windows Vista which will enable me to upgrade to a Windows 7 in the future.

Thanks for all the replies. You experienced guys correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not as familiar with laptops as I am desktops so this may not be much of an issue, but if your GOING to run some OLDER XP era software with Windows 7, whatever MACHINE you get needs to have a CPU capable of hardware VIRTUALIZATION, which is required to run XP mode on a machine running Windows 7.

I didn't know this when I bought the Core2 Q8200 CPU (not virtualization capable) I installed in my last build and it caused some problems running older software with Windows 7
^ ouh? is this true? So where can I get this hardware virtual thing?

Solve : Java issues?

Answer»

Hi Perhaps its me i dont know, but since 3 days ago i can only read some newspaper websites with Java Script turned off. Twas never an issue before. If i turn java script off, i can read the stories but not the comments and if i turn it back on the page wont load.
My wife uses hotmail which she cant log on to without java script enabled.
I have tried updating java script, i have reloaded Firefox, also tried using IE but have problem whatever i do.
Is this a VIRUS/malware dont know what to do next! Please someone help me before i throw my cdomputer out of the window!
ThanksJavascript is not the same as Java the TWO totally different . what browser are you using?Firefox new version as i deleated it then downloaded the new one in case that was problem. Also tried Opera but was so slow i deleated it again!Quote from: terryb on September 21, 2009, 12:04:51 PM

Firefox new version as i deleated it then downloaded the new one in case that was problem. Also tried Opera but was so slow i deleated it again!
Don't understand this post at all.OK let me start again, untill a few days ago my computer was fine, then it would not load some pages on newspaper websites. It loads the front page but when you click on a story it freezes up. If you disable Java Scrip it loads but without comments made by readers. Unfortunatly as my wife uses Hotmail, she needs Java Script running so i cant just leave it off, and clearly there is a problem.
So i started by getting the latest Firefox, in case that was the problem, it made no difference, so i tried Opera which just ran so slow i gave up and deleated it, tried IE and it is the same as Firefox, so i decided to try a Java update, still makes no difference.

I am currently going through the steps on the read this before requesting malware removal help page as i am now guessing this must be the problem?

Do you see my problem now or am i just not getting it right? Okay, got it .

A COUPLE of things. First, you said this just started the other day. Did anything new HAPPEN between the last time everything was okay and the first time it wasn't (new hw, sw, etc)?

Also, I'd like to ask you to please run a full system scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware (or both). Hi Allen THANKS
I cant think of anything but, asking wife is like trying to get blood out of stone as "I always blame her"!!!
Ran my Avast Anti Virus nothing, ran Microsoft Malicious software removal tool, nothing. Tried Malwarebytes, nothing (though did not update so trying that next!).
SuperAnti-Spyware has just this second stopped and has 3 items all Trojan.Agent/Gen-Fake Alert(X32) so just going to deal with that before updating Malwarebytes and running that as per the malware page? Am I doing ok so far?
Thanks TerryYou're doing great - but you really need to stop blaming your wife for everything This is the final log from Hijack this, I have posted it to the Malware page also. Any clues what i do next??? Thanks

Solve : Installer service?

Answer»

I am trying to install some programs in my computer including the LAN driver and I keep GETTING the message that the WINDOWS Installer SERVICE cannot be accessed. I says it may be because I'm in Safe MODE (which I'm not). How do I correct this problem?GO to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Do you see the WINDOWS INSTALLER service listed? Make sure it's not set to "disabled" (it can be "manual" or "automatic" - either is fine).

Solve : slow start?

Answer»
I have

Dell Dimension 8400
Microsoft Windows XP SERVICE pack 3
2 GB of Ram

I have tried following:
defregmented drive
remove all temp file
check start up programs

But still it takes 5 to 6 min to start. Can you help? Open msconfig and on the general tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all boxes) and reboot. How does the system boot?Yes I have tried that also but did not work, I am using Norton security 2009 software which is using some resources but not to make it 5 min. start up time.

I had a same problem last year but I forgot how it was solve.

Just out of curiousity, did this slowdown start after the latest (last Tuesday) updates from Windows?......I've seen a couple of instances of this since then.....loads perfectly to the screensaver and takes a LONG time for the desktop icons to appear.Yes, you are right, it started after update. Even my Norton security software was disable after update. I have to call Norton to re install security software. The technician told me that it happend with other people also.Norton's my first suspect on ANY slow machine...whether it's having issues or not.It seems to start as soon as the updates are installed and when the request for a restart is made the pc takes a very long time to load the desktop icons.....Didn't mean to hijack this.....just a little input.Yes Norton takes up lots of resources but I paid money for Norton and do not want to change. Do you think I should change to some other security software? I was using Norton 360 for a while but it created lots of problems so I uninstall 360 and install Norton security 2009 software. Good thing about this software is that the service calls are fre.Yeah, I agree, must be either some update, or Norton, or both.
Nothing malicious there. There was another problem with Yahoo messenger, when you turn off computer the yahoo messenger want turn off. You have to manually turn off yaho messenger. So I uninstall yahoo messenger.Try this test....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Same problem? After getting all the important updates today for the Vista 64bit machine today the re-boot was well over 20 minutes...

Your machine?
Were there any updates today, or you just postponed them?

Solve : Typing?

Answer»

When I type, no characters appear on the screen. This happens whether I am in WORD, or if I am TRYING to fill out a form on the internet. I'll bet there's an EASY fix for this, but I must confess ignorance of it. Thanks for any help.Problem solved. I just had to reconnect with my wireless KEYBOARD. Thanks for looking.See how good we are sometimes ? ? Quote from: jamesdem on September 19, 2009, 11:38:35 AM

Solve : Computer will not start up?

Answer» HI,

A couple of days ago , I started up my laptop, but the screen stayed black and nothing else happened. My dad got it working yesterday somehow, he said that he just held the power button down for longer, but today I tried it again and my laptop just won't START up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

--William.More info on your system, OS, and any problems prior to this and someone will be along shortly to assist.I have an IBM Thinkpad and I use Windows XP Proffessional.
Problems prior to this were that my COMPUTER would shut down if it wasn't plugged in, and it would come back on by itself if I TURNED it on hibernate or STANDBY mode.

Hope that helps. It's very possible that laptop battery is getting ready to take a dump...try the machine with just the AC power and see if it does the same thing.

Just wiped and reloaded a Dell Deminsion 5100, OS Win XP Home, SP 2. These items seem to be much smaller on this Dell than on my own computer, XP Pro, SP 2.

Say you click on the "Start" icon and the menu box that opens is much smaller on the Dell than on mine, it seems that way with all items.

Thanks,Try right clicking in your task bar, properties, general, show SMALL icons untick.Fordtruckmaniac....Do you have the screen resolution set the same ....It almost sounds like its at a higher resolution .

dl65 Fordtruckmaniac......Go into the display and change the resolution .........I just did it on mine and the result is as you described .

dl65 SORRY, I just got back to my computer.

The box for the larger icons was checked in the "customize start menu" box.

The resolution ISSUE fixed it.

The funny thing was it was big when I first fired it back up. Then it got small somewhere along LOADING software from disks back into it.

Not online or anything, so nothing got it.

Thanks much,

My Medion Akoya EX laptop displays this message on a blue screen more than once a week, some times multiple times in one day:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ialmrnt5
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware correctly.

I've updated my drivers. The problem is triggered whenever I load a program such as trillian or itunes. I have Windows XP Home Edition. This is the first major problem I've had with this laptop. thanks for the link. actually, i've been there before but almost all of those people complain that it happens when they play a game, especially sims. i don't play games like that on my computer. the error doesn't even show up when i play other games like chess or solitaire. it just shows up when something is loading. i didn't KNOW if it was the same problem the other people were having. i'll download the driver from the link anyways. THANK you.List laptop specs............the laptop you have may not ,be up to playing the sims?my laptop has an 80gb hard drive, 512mb of DDR ram with an intel centrino processor. it has integrated graphics, an Intel (R) 82852/82855 GM/GME graphics CONTROLLER. obviously it's not meant for gaming and i don't play sims anyways. i just meant that almost everybody who has this problem gets an error relating to ialmrnt 5 when they're playing sims. my problem is not related to playing any game--it simply just happens usually when i'm loading a program. i didn't know if my problem was the same as their problem if i got the error when i wasn't playing a game. thanks for the help.Have you tried un-installing and re-installing the video drivers ? ?
Also do a regular scan for baddies, run disk cleanup and check disk just in case...

Solve : Wallpaper Won't Individualize!?

Answer»

Silly question...EMBARRASSED that it has me stumped. Running Windows XP Home Edition, both my wife and I have separate accounts, both as "administrators," and now (all of a sudden) whenever ONE of us selects a favorite photo (jpeg) to use as the Desktop wallpaper, it applies that change to both my desktop and hers (instead of allowing us to each have our own desktop wallpaper). What's up with that?!AH....never mind.....I figured it out. When using ACDSee software to find, select and assign the pic as "wallpaper," the "Display" function (in Conrtol Panel)only allowed for one "ACD Wallpaper." Thus, if both accounts used ACDSee to accomplish the wallpaper setting, it would apply to both accounts. However, if the pic is selected and assigned as wallpaper by a different MEANS (Windows Explorer, the Internet, etc.), it is allowed as a separate entry in Display and the two accounts can have their own separate wallpapers.Correct...after ACDSee has created them you have to GO to that directory and rename them each time.

I recently tried to download and install a game I played a while ago, trying to get reinterested. When it went to update, my explorer.exe closed and things stopped RESPONDING. When I rebooted my computer, the backround picture loaded, but no start bar, no ICONS, right CLICK didnt work.

I uninstalled my game from safe mode, and rebooted again, I got my start bar and right click back, but now I have this problem with my menus. If i right click, all the text is small and crunched together. On my mozilla windows, like tools, it is so small you CANT change any of the options on it. I was wondering if anyone has seen this before and can help me fix it.Right clik on an empty SPACE on the desktop and choose Properties/Settings and re-set your desktop resolution...
Some games re-set this when starting and it probably stayed that way.

Solve : ActiveX Control?

I get this message while browsing certain website:

This page provides potential unsafe information to an ActiveX control. Your current security settings prohibit running control in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly.

What does this MEAN?
What is the cause?
And how to settle it?

Thanks.Do a search in the forum and on google for activeX. It may be something you do not want running on your computer. Safety vs. viewing certain web sites is a CHOICE you will have to make.

You might want to try Firefox, or another browser that is not susceptible to Active X allowed intrusions.I visited Active-X.com but they CHARGE for support...What do you want so bad that REQUIRES you to compromise your security with Active X???As the error message suggests: As a result, this page may not display correctly
Any page with images will load till the sunrise and sunset after the message pop-up.
I need to close all browser windows and reopen the page to make it display normally. Sometimes I EVEN have to restart my PC.

325is.....Here's what some research has turned up .......
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O23 - Service: Windows Overlay Components - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\errlkqb.exe (file missing)

These must be removed.....and I think you have removed them before , however they seem to be coming back as the result of the "Nail.exe"

Nail .exe is a trojan ..... this is what it's about .......
Got Aurora? Nail.exe?
Here is who you can thank for your misery:

http://www.direct-revenue.com/news6.php

Direct Revenue Launches Aurora

New Ad Client Affords Greater Brand Visibility, More Efficient Distribution

New York, New York – April 26, 2005 – Direct Revenue today announced the launch of its NEWEST ad client, Aurora™.

The Aurora ad client is designed to improve product visibility and consumer services. The roll out of the upgrade to the DR behavioral NETWORK began on April 5th by replacing outdated ad clients in an effort to improve consumer awareness. Like other DR ad client brands such as “SolidPeer”, released in September ‘04 and “Ceres” released in November ‘05, the Aurora Ad Client is compliant with the branding and removal standards of all major proposed Federal legislation relating to online contextual ads such as HR 2929.

it has installed a reg entry in to softwaremicrosoftwindows ntcurrentversionwinlogon “Shell” and

Shell=Explorer.exe C:WINDOWSNail.exe

it also keeps creating files in windowsprefetch with a random serise of letters and the same random serise also appears in the system process’ an example being

xgoudno.exe which i then end so i can try to delete the prefetch file but then renames its self to something like ahilwj.exe

if running outside of safe mode it also installs a programme called aurora.exe which then produces the pop ups out of the normal browser window. I am running “hijackthis” “norton AV 2005” “adaware personal SE” and none of these seem able to deal with the threat effeciently.

This indeed a real nasty ......... however , I also found this which may do the job .......
Do not, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, use mypctuneup.com. It is owned by Direct Revenue LCC, the same company that produces Aurora.

In an article by a LEGITIMATE anti-spyware company, it is stated, "None of the installed programs [of Direct Revenue, including Aurora and mypctuneup] have INFORMATION that identifies them as a product of Direct Revenue, nor do the programs have the brand name of Ceres or Aurora clearly identified in the executable files. One of its running programs uses a randomly generated file name [your gmbgklixrp, tash] so it is impossible to tell what the file does. The others are named in vague or deceptive ways such as "System Startup Service" or "Nail.exe". (http://www.pcpitstop.com/news/drnotice.asp)
Mypctuneup will remove nail.exe, but will make many more problems for your computer. In the licensing agreement before INSTALLING mypctuneup, you allow the installation of a web bug. Also, you consent for your "non-personal information", including IP address, ISP, domain, to be recorded.

The legitimate, well reviewed (by cnet and pcmagazine) program Webroot Spy Sweeper can be used to quarantine and nullify the effects of Aurora (use the 30 day trial).

Webroot Spy Sweeper 14 day free trial .......

How do i enable my task manager again?

Thank you very much and look forward to hearing from youIn Windows XP Pro you can open the 'Group Policy Editor' by going start -> run -> gpedit.msc. You should be ABLE to find the option to disable the task manager for the CURRENT user and re-enable access to task manager.

Solve : Comuter Is On But No Display?

Answer»

my laptop was working fine yesterday mrorning, but in the evening, it started to malfuction. in the evening, when i tried to turn it on, the power would be on, the com would be "alive" but there is no display, so i cannot tell if it is something wrong with my display card or virus or whatever. i tried turning it on a few more times and didn't work. so i just tried 1 more time and left it there. after an hour, i came back and found that it was wokring. i used it for about half an hour before shutting it down. when i returned to turn it on, the com turned on perfectly.

but today, when i tried to turn it on since 10.30am(GMT +8.00) and it has been hours. i've tried LEAVING it there and perhaps it would turn on sooner or later. no luck. i DUN surf the net much and spend my time on the com playing RO and chatting on MSN. so i hope it ain't a virus...but it sure looks like it. whats worse, my com has just been reformatted about a month ago. thnx in advance for your help and advice.Problems similar to yours can be caused by several things including bad or INTERMITTENT battery, display, motherboard, power management settings, memory, bios, etc. etc. One of the most COMMON causes is hibernation without proper power (not plugged in).

You need to check all of the above and more to troubleshoot your laptop. If you tell us what your using (PC, OS, etc.), recent changes you've made, and any additional hardware you have, we can help you with the troubleshooting. Otherwise it's guesswork.

Dellthe laptop which is having problem is a hewlett packard dv1005ap. i am not exactly IT saavy so i have not made any extra changes to the computer. mostly just games. and about the hibernation thing, i doubt so. the laptop is plugged in to the powerpoint...shouldn't be a hibernation problem. in fact, i cannot even cause the laptop to hibernate. the little button that all laptops come with, you know the one below the screen? well, i tried using it...doesn't work.... help?

but thnx for your help dell

My recommendation is to follow HP's procedure for troubleshooting startup problems for this laptop:

Perform the following actions to PREPARE the computer for troubleshooting a startup problem.

1. Remove the battery and AC adapter from the notebook.
2. Remove any optical disks (CD or DVD), and disconnect any external devices or peripherals such as USB devices, printers, docking stations etc.
3. Plug the AC adapter directly into a functioning wall socket.
4. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

Depending on what happens next, you can follow the procedures here:

Note that Explorer Search will not find all the hidden files. SIMPLY deleting what you find MAY not permanently remove them either. Many, if not all, will just return.

DellDesktop.ini keeps the individual settings of your folder.

So EVEN if you delete them they will come back.
folder.htt server a SIMILAR function.

Solve : NO Bios & computer freeze during restoring?

I had problem about no sound after adding NEW dvdr and restoring my computer using restore cds.So i ordered new restore cds from emachine.I got new restore cds so i was restoring my computer model T2692 its 2.6 ghz.after intallation of both cds , i had new window setup, when i reach the page about my compter name and i filled up my computer name.and now its freeze, i can go next window or back either. so i shutted off power and restarted my computer Here another problem popup. I again fill up my computer name and waiting waiting more than 30 minutes no next page no back page its froze again.so i restarted my computer same screen popup Inthe right corner of my monitor says intel inside and in the center of monitor Just emachines logo(e). and screen went black.
Now my question is this why my computer is not running/ showing BIOS / CMOS information on startup and why its keep freezing i m really really upset with restore cds. what i m doing wrong or what my computer is doing wrong .PLs , Pls help me to straight my computer. Looking Fwd to hear from you and thankyou in advance.
I've read your post dozens of times and although I'd like to help you, it's not clear to me where to start. So, I'll start near the beginning with some recommendations.

- configure your PC as closely to the original as you can. Remove any unnecessary additions you have made such as extra drives, etc. Anything that was not original has the potential to kill your restore. Go to the emachines' web SITE for info on the configuration if you're not sure.
http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=desktop&subcat=T-Series&model=T2692

- make sure all your connections and cards are seated properly especially the ones you may have dislodged when you installed your latest hardware (power disconnected when you do this).

- try your restore/recovery setup again. If still a problem, follow the troubleshooting steps that are also posted on the emachines' site.

Solve : Virus or Malware?

I am RUNNIN windows xp and it is updated fully. I recently bought a router and with it I received a free 60 day trial of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet SECURITY. I installed it and in this version it actually does a pre scan. No viruses were found and it installed just fine. After restarting my computer, I tried to open Norton and it wont open. When i try to visit the symantec website, i am REDIRECTED to a search page or it gives me a message that the site is unavailable. the same thing happens when i try to visit mcafee's site also. Bios boot set -up wrong.......Can you GET into safe mode delete all your old drivers and re-boot to install new ones?

ANYONE know if this is possible?I think that would be his best possible chance Mac.

Exactly!

It would be interesting to know.

Looks like new partitions and a clean install though.
Ok, Im up and running! I re-installed windows, and everything is A-OK.

Thanks for the advice!

One wierd thing, when I was trying to boot up from the floppy, it was giving me the option to boot from the hard drive, CD or floppy. It asked me to select 1, 2, or 3, but my USB port keyboard wouldn't work (the same thing happened when I tried to get into safe-mode). I had to dust off the old PS-2 keyboard to make the CHOICE.

Again, thanks.

BTW: the new rig is FAST!Tarmac...Quote
but my USB port keyboard wouldn't work

That's because at that point you had no USB drivers installed .

Glad to hear things are working well.

Solve : preventing a 60 minute time out!?

Answer»

ok so heres what gets me, everytime i play an online GAME, i have 60 minutes before it causes me to log out for no reason! so i have to log BACK in and play but then after another 60 minutes it does the same thing! how do i PREVENT the 60 minute time out?Buy it. Quote

Buy it.

no it happens on all games. even bought ones. its a computer problem not the game problem. Is it as regular as clockwork?

What computer make/model, processor, RAM, power SUPPLY, graphics card, sound card, game involved, etc.

It is only this one game?it's pretty much every game i play. I have 60 minutes of gameplay from the time i log in. I have a Cable Modem connection. and an E-Machine (i know they suck but it works pretty good). Maybe theres some setting on my computer, ive tried everything but so far i cant find out why. What if you're not gaming at all, just surfing the net, playing Solitaire, whatever?

If gaming only it may be a heat problem. What games, how demanding and what is your hardware setup? Are these games run from the CD?Could it be that your router is kicking you out? Try logging on to it and look for a setting a la "DHCP lease time".

From http://www.comptechdoc.org/independent/networking/guide/netdhcp.html -

DHCP Lease Renewal

After 50% of the lease time has passed, the client will attempt to renew the lease with the original DHCP server that it obtained the lease from using a DHCPREQUEST message. Any time the client boots and the lease is 50% or more passed, the client will attempt to renew the lease. At 87.5% of the lease completion, the client will attempt to contact any DHCP server for a new lease. If the lease expires, the client will send a request as in the initial boot when the client had no IP address. If this fails, the client TCP/IP stack will cease functioning. The games I know that kick out every 60 minutes are Ragnarok, Knight Online, and Ultima Online. Doubt it is a heat problem, I just think there is some significance to the 60 minute time out. the DHPC didn't WORK. I don't play solitare so I wouldn't know.OK, i figured out what the problem was, the only problem now is solving it. It seems to be a watchdog timeout error. It is caused by SNA Server Keepalives on Idle LAN Connections. The only problem is, how do I set it to not start over every 60 minutes?

Solve : links in outlook express?

Answer»

I am unable to access any email links SENT to me. When I click on the link, it does nothing. Any help would be appreciated.Did it ever work? What happened prior to this?Which Browser are you using? Check to see if it is SET to default.

In OE Tools, Options check this setting...

And see if you have a setting that blocks HTMLIt used to work. I suspect it has something to do with my McAfee firewall. Although I realize it is important to have a secure computer, sometimes it is REALLY a HASSLE. I had been tinkering with security settings trying to gain access to a specific website that gave me an error no matter what I did. I am able to access this site via another computer, so I KNOW it is a problem with my computer. I have changed so many things, I am not sure what it is now. I went into Microsoft help and found a troubleshooting question for my specific problem. Unfortunately, what it said to do didn't help. (re-registering the urlmon.dll file) Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to register for an online service which requires clicking on an email link to complete my registration. Thanks, StephI went to OE options---security. the only 2 boxes that are checked are Internet zone(less secure...) and warn me when other applications try to send mail as me. I also talked to comcast and mcafee. I had another firewall problem that was preventing internet access. When I asked them about the problem with email links, they said it was a problem with an OE setting. Thanks again, Steph

Solve : Configuring XP , SP2 Firewall?

Answer»

Is it enough to just "enable" the Microsoft XP SP2 firewall.

Or does it need personal tweaking?

My son's gilrfriends fairly new Dell 5100, XP Home, may have croaked earlier tonight. Her Norton AV that came with the Dell expired just about a week ago. They removed it all and the firewall that was with it. Installed free Avast, and just checked the box to enable the Microsoft firewall. She is on a high speed wireless IP. The Dell would not completely boot. It would only go right to where the desktop was supposed to load, but would not. They called and I tolg them to boot in safe mode, which it loaded all the way there. I told them to run Avast in safe mode, since they were there. It had several viruses, when she cleaned it up with Avast, afterward it pretty much died and said a re-install was needed.

I have no idea what transpired prior, other than phone comunication.

Is it time to break out her "Recovery Disks"?

With the XP SP2 firewall how can this be prvented from happening again?

Thanks.Fordtruckmaniac

Based on what you have said ......I would say yes ...

Quote

I don't believe it was the lack of a firewall that did in the machine , but rather the absence of a anti virus ......
REMEMBER Windows firewall is just that A firewall , which only blocks incoming threats ....it is not a anti virus ....... I would be installing a AV app such as AVG or Avast .

dl65 I guess I did not say it right about installing Avast.

It was installed immediately after removing the Norton system that came with the Dell, which was about a week ago. Then my son just put a check mark in the box for enabling the XP, SP2 firewall after removing Norton's program.

Is there anything that can be set better for not letting this happen again after doing the re-install? I think she gets her e-mail through AOL. Will or can the firewall be set to protect e-mail? I think Avast can be set to scan e-mail, right?

Thanks.Fordtruckmaniac..... Ok, if I understand the sequence of events , the Norton Security trial (90 day probably ) expired . Norton Security , includes both a anti virus and a firewall. So this software was removed and the machine had no AV installed for a period of time until Avast free version was downloaded .......Thats probably when the machine BECAME infected . Turning on the Firewall that is included in SP2 from microsoft would have had no effect on the machine as far as preventing the virus attack. So if the pc wont boot up in normal mode , it is time to run the recovery disks .........and once its back to normal ....make sure that the anti virus that is installed is up to date ......in fact , if they dont have Avast on a cd ..... they should use another pc and D/L either Avast or AVG and burn it onto a disk . Then they can load that disk onto the Dell and they will have virus protection and can safely go on-line.
Hope this helps you.

dl65
You have it all correct but the time from deletion of Norton to installing Avast.

Avast was loaded immediately after the deletion of Norton. Which your right, was still an open window for a little bit.

She has a highspeed wireless IP and it took just a couple minutes maybe, to load it.

But my son ran Avast in the boot scan mode, including checking archive files, right after installation of Avast and it found nothing.

And after running Avast when it was acting up, it is really messed up now. In safe mode now all you get is a black screen with "safe mode" in the corners. No start menu, icons, nothing. just the error MESSAGE "win" SOMETHING, "dll missing files" then doing a re-install to fix the problem. I may actually have it Sunday to look at.

I myself, do have Avast burned on a disk that I use to install it without being online unprotected. So it will get used after the re-install.

Thanks.

Solve : Recognizing Maxtor External HD?

Answer»

New Maxtor 300GB external HD shows ok on device manager but WITHOUT drive LETTER and can't be accesed - running WinMEHas that drive been partitioned and formatted yet ? ?
If not Windows will not see it.
Use the MaxBlast utility that shipped with the drive to PREPARE it.

patio. Hmm...
did u make sure to format it properly?
insert the WinME cd into the cd-rom, reset ur pc
when the 1st screen shows up (memory count, the display of your harddrives), click on "del" buton a few times till the Bios windows shows up, go in:
Advanced Chipest, or something LIKE that, i dont remember excatly...

anyway, change the Boot order, instead of Floppy, choose CD-ROM, Save&Exit.
when ur pc restarts it self, it'll ask u to press any key to boot from CD-ROM, FOLLOW this instruction, be patient 'till the screen shows up showing all of your partitions, try to format/re-format your harddrive (NTFS/FAT32), and create a logical partition.

If that didnt work, start your pc, in windows, right click on My Computer >> Manage >> Disk Management >> try to see what details does it show you bout ur Maxtor hard-drive & partitions.

Solve : windows media and itunes won't play cds?

Answer»
I have an hp pavilion ze4200 with the windows xp program. Lately, every time I have tried to play a cd or a dvd on the computer even with windows MEDIA or itunes running, it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone TELL me what's wrong? Is there a file missing?

ps- they're real cds and dvds not copied or burned or anything like thatTry going in to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...find the CD drive(s) and right clik them. SELECT Remove and hit Enter. You will get a warning message ignore it.
On re-boot WinXP will re-install the drivers and you should be good to go...

patio. ok, but right now I'm reinstalling windows media player, would that work?
As Patio said, you should REINSTALL your drive and the drivers.

You said that itunes was also not working, so fixing or reinstalling Win Media Player would not fix that problem.

There's a lot of malware going around, some from reputable SOURCES such as Sony. Make sure you regularly scan for them.

Dellwhat cd drives?
