Yeah I did that.Go Start>Run
Type:
regedit
Hit ENTER.
Click File>Export, save your registry to known location.

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network
Right click on "Navigate", click New>Binary Value
Type in:
MinPwdLen
Click OK.

Right click on "MinPwdLen", click "Modify".
Enter number 0, if it's not there, already.
Click OK.

Close Registry Editor.
Restart.

You may print out the above, because you can't allow any mistake (like typo). My regedit only shows up to the "current version", there isn't a Policies\Network.

thanksit could be something to do with the bios dying. I am a little comfused on what os you are using?. also listing your computer specs would be good: e.g. memory, os, hardware1)i "Was" using Windows XP but then my computer broke....2)i lost the xp disk....3)i went to use the milenium backup disk that came with the computer 4)it gave me a message saying it found no hd....

thats pretty much all i know about it....yeahthe specs help a lot. me disk might not work on an xp system because of different system filesso even if the computer had milenium originally it still WONT work? You are getting some erroneous info here...
First off BIOS's don't just start dying...i'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean.
Secondly if it is the CD that came with the machine it should work fine.
OEM copies will only install on the same BRAND of PC.
If the hard drive is not being detected try checking the IDE and power connections to make sure they are SEATED properly. If it's still not detected find out what make it is and DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. website. What does it do when you use a windows ME bootdisk?

Solve : MSN Messenger playing up?

Answer»

I have a friend whom ive been CHATTING to on live messenger (v8.1 etc [up to date one] ) for a good number of months, but all of SUDDEN the odd message i sent to her and vica versa wouldnt ARRIVE.

The problem has become more common in the last month with 70% now not getting through. It seems Nudge's are now the only thing i can rely on.

We both upgraded to the v8.5 beta2 but the problem seems as bad as before.

But the thing that is REALLY confusing, is that I regularly chat to about 10 people, and she is the only PERSON I can confirm it happens to. (Although I suspect it's the same to another mate but I dont know her well enough to know for sure).
Any thought are much appreciated.
Thankyou for your time.

Solve : forgotten password / restricted sites?

Answer»

I have forgotten the supervisor password to allow restricted websites! I SET this restriction at the highest so now cannot even get onto the internet without the password!

This password was set in CONTROL panel>internet properties>content advisor>general. I can still SIGN onto the computer so I know I didn't reset the administrator's logon password - but when I go to internet explorer, a pop up BOX tells me to enter password to allow this site!

How can I get the restrictions removed when I do not know the password?

Thank you for any suggestions!

Solve : Fatal Error?

Answer»

When trying to reinstall Win XP Home edition on a second computer(Pent 4, 512 ram) I continue to get a 'Fatal Error' window with the MESSAGE:

"Setup failed to install product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should
contain more INFORMATION. Press OK to view setup log file."

I've tried to boot in safe mode but it won't allow this. I've also tried to get to the
commmand prompt but unable. The PC is stuck in this setup mode and won't boot up
now. I'm ultimately trying reformat the C drive.

Not sure if this is relevent but I used my copy of XP Home to do a clean install, together with the other PC's product key NUMBER.
Thanks! Maybe here:

I'm glad to hear it BTW...There were 3 possible solution. Which one worked? The first solution: boot /shift/F10 ALLOWED me to skip over the install window and restore XP. I'll tuck this away for similiar errors that may come up again.

Solve : working off-line problem?

Answer» HI all,

just joined. Hoping that someone can help me with a problem WORKING off-line. When I attempt to open saved web pages in IE, nothing happens. I have recently installed Comodo firewall and Spyware TERMINATOR software and there hasn't been a problem viewing saved pages until a few days ago. Any suggestions to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Ta for taking time to read this post,

regards,

therocker
First off Welcome Aboard !
What location are you saving the web pages to ? ?
Try creating a new folder and see if this changes things...
Double check the Comodo settings although i believe if it was blocking this activity you would see a popup notification of some sort.

I'd like you to check as WELL who the Author of Spyware Terminator is...i have it listed as a Rogue program that produces false positives to get people to purchase it...
Post that info back here and i'll check it out.Hey...
I use Spyware Terminator. It's a FREE program, so it can't ask for buying anything.
McAfee Site Advisor says:
We tested this site and didn't find any significant problems. There are others using that name and are Rogues. That's why i requested the Author. Here you go:
http://www.spywareterminator.com/I'm aware of the free version which is not rogueware.
We still do not know what the OP has however...

Solve : Virus Identification?

Answer»

How can I decide whether my PC has been infected by VIRUS ?

Are there any symptoms that can quickly point to virus infection ?

Please inform me.

Vishnu ThakorIf the computer is behaving oddly or you're getting STRANGE popups and messages even when you're not using your browser that can be signs of an infection.
But the only way to really determine if you got an infection is to scan your computer with an anti virus program.
You should install an Anti virus program if you don't got one.

AVG
is pretty good and it's free.

You should know that no one anti virus program can detect all viruses though. Therefore it is a good idea to get a second opinion, from a different scanner if you SUSPECT an infection. You can USE an online scanner for this purpose. These doesn't replace having AV software installed though.
Here are links to a couple of good ones:

Solve : AIM not working on laptop.?

Answer»

Okay, so I posted this in another subforum but it's not getting any replies so I THOUGHT I'd try it here as well. My FRIEND is having some trouble with using AIM. She can use it on the computer that is connected to the router through an ethenet cable, however neither her nor my laptops that are connected wirelessly can get on. Does anyone know what is wrong that she can fix it so she can get it on a wireless connection?

They also have AOL internet, which I know is a major pain in the arse sometimes.please post specifications of the computers trying to use it, and what is aim?AOL Instant Messenger...Well since it's working with the computers when not on a wireless connection. I'd assume it has SOMETHING to do with the wireless connection and not the computer.

My first thought is that the wireless connection is blocking transmissions of data on the port used by AIM. If this is your wireless router setup, I'd look at the ports on the router and make sure tcp port 5190 is not being blocked or try adding it to the available port LIST (depending on the TYPE of router you're using).

If this is not your wireless router connection you're using whoever is maintaining it has likely blocked it from working properly.Ok, so my next question would be how to find that TCP port to change it, because I am not sure how to do that as I do not mess with networking stuff much. What's your router brand?

Solve : lifetime of harddisk?

Answer»

How many times can I format the harddisk during its life time ?

Vishnu Thakor
Formatting a hard drive doesn't put any more wear on it than everyday use. So there isn't really any fixed limit to the number of formats you can perform. As I understand it HD's don't die because of the all the reading and writing. It's because of the number of hours it's been spinning. The BEARING can only rotate for so long, or something to that effect.Quote from: And 1 on October 21, 2007, 06:58:28 AM

As I understand it HD's don't die because of the all the reading and writing. It's because of the number of hours it's been spinning. The bearing can only rotate for so long, or something to that effect.

Typical hard drive failure MODES:

The main two:-

Mechanical Failures: These include component failures related to the mechanics of the disk. Problems of this type usually relate to the spindle motor or bearings, such as motor burnout, "stuck" bearings, excessive heat, or excessive noise and vibration. Actuator problems would also fit into this general category.

Head and Head Assembly Failures: The infamous head crash fits in here, as do other problems related to the heads: improper flying height, head contamination, defects in head manufacture, excessive errors on reads or writes, bad wiring between the heads and the
logic board.

Less common:-

Media Failure: This class of problems relates to trouble with the platters and the magnetic media, formatting, servo operation and the like. This would include drives that fail due to read or write errors, poor handling, scratches on the media surface, errors in low-level formatting, etc.

Logic Board or Firmware Failures: These are problems related to the drive's integrated logic board, its chips and other components, and the software routines (firmware) that runs it.

The most common causes of head crashes are contamination getting stuck in the thin gap between the head and the disk, and shock applied to the hard disk while it is in operation. Don't BASH your computer! Be especially careful with portable computers; I try to never move the unit while the hard disk is active.

What operating system are you using?QuickFormat would allow you
to do it a lot more times.

From my experience you can keep formatting until it fails...
See the reasons for failure above.

I never counted though...There is nothing special about formatting a disk, as far as the workings of the disk are concerned. Formatting is only a set of read and write operations; a format which takes half an hour will wear the disk out as much as, but no more than, downloading a file that takes that long, or, in fact, operating the computer for 30 minutes, with swap file, file indexing, whatever, going on in the background.

Formatting sounds different from the other things you can do with a hard disk, maybe, because the SEQUENCE of write and read operations starts from the beginning of the disk and proceeds in a regular (not random) fashion until the whole disk surface has had a file system written on it, so you HEAR a regular tick tick tick which sounds different from the more familiar random movements heard during normal operation.

And don't forget, when the bearings seize, stick the drive in a freezer and you should be able to recover all your data.

Solve : XP Boot Up Problems?

Answer»

Hi

Please can you help me? Our computer will boot up however only to the safe mode screen. When I SELECT safe mode it runs through the Windows XP screen as normal and then goes back to the black safe mode screen.
I can not run this in safe mode or normall as the same happens each time.

Please can any one advise me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you so much.

Betty1612 In the Safe mode run system restore> go back to the date your computer last ran correctly1. From the "Windows Advanced OPTIONS Menu", the screen that presents you with the Safe Mode options that you appear to be at; select the following item:

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

2. If that doesn't resolve the "RESTART cycle" that you appear to be in, and you're running Windows XP SP2; from the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" select the following item:

Disable automatic restart on system failure

Hopefully you'll now stop at a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) that has error message text and numbers on it. If you copy this data exactly as it appears and post it here, someone can search internet using "substrings" of the error message to find potential causes and resolutions.

I don't believe this "item" appears on earlier VERSIONS of Windows XP (original or SP1).

3. Either way, success or failure, post back. I tried to reboot in last known good configuration and the same error happens!

Sorry, the Windows Advanced Option Menu, is this on the black screen?

I will have a look tonight as this is on my home PC and will paste back the answers via my laptop.

Thank you for your help. Quote from: Betty1612 on November 06, 2007, 12:39:58 AM

Sorry, the Windows Advanced Option Menu, is this on the black screen?

Yes, the Windows Advanced Option Menu is on "a" black screen. If you're running Windows XP SP2, the following item should be available to you:

Disable automatic restart on system failure

It sounds like your system is automatically taking you there due to the "unknown" condition. Normally you would access this menu by tapping the F8 key about once a second as you boot your system. (Or if you feel lucky, immediately after the single beep of a successful Power On Self Test (POST)).

As I mentioned earlier, I don't believe this "item" appears on earlier versions of Windows XP (original or SP1).If you have the Windows XP CD-ROM available, you must run it and restore the OS KERNEL reinstalling it (Note: I don't mean that you reformatting the HDD, only reinstall Windows XP to restore the kernel)

try it and answer me back!!!!

If you don't know how to do this, you must follow the next steeps:
1. Boot up the machine with the Widnows XP CD-ROM inside, and press any key to start from the cd...

2. Select in the blue screen menu the "Install Windows XP" option by press the Enter key.

3. When the Installation interface shows you the option that you have a Windows XP OS installed, then press R to repair the Installed WXP.

4. When all the process finish, you could enter to WXP normally, and you will note that all the programs, folder and files will remain in your pc.

Or you could first listen to what the system is trying to tell us. At this point you don't "must" do anything. The option "friny" proposes is still on the table but may not be the best one. Following link discusses a methodical approach to resolving the problem.

Post the data here. It's important to copy exact message (and numbers) as they appear to facilitate internet searches (Microsoft Knowledge Base and other sites).Strange! We done a few guess work bits with the repair CD and it has now logged on however it ran through CHKDSK first, verifies things and then goes to the sign on screen.

Should we run the virus checker?

Thank you so much1. Chkdsk may have corrected inconsistencies within the file system.

2. Virus Checker. It wouldn't hurt since you should run it periodically anyway. I guess you're asking whether you should run it while you're successfully logged in. Don't know, it's your call. If you have access to the internet, I'd probably ensure its signature database is updated before running the scan.

3. Blue Screen.
Quote from: Betty1612 on November 06, 2007, 11:37:43 AM

Solve : My Documents Folder Icon Changed Itself??

Answer»

Hi,

I' am using Windows XP Professional SP2 and experienced this glitch yesterday when the icon of My Documents changed to this one:

The only place it stayed it's old self is Start PANEL:

How it HAPPENED: I was watching some videos in full screen mode in my Windows Media Player, there were both videos and music in the playlist. The last video played and then the computer froze for half a minute, then the music track started playing and some visualisation came up. I exited the full mode but my Taskbar icons looked glitchy (colour-less?). I refreshed a couple of times, then had to get off the computer. When I TURNED it on today, My Documents icon looked like this.

I might add that My Documents is a second part of my hard drive that's DIVIDED by partition into two parts: C: system and D: documents. As it's a system folder, I can't change the icon by simply clicking "Properties", there's no "Customize".

Is there any way to change the My Documents icon to it's proper default one? Any HELP would be appreciated.

I believe, if you right click on an icon, then Properties, then "Change Icon" button, default icon should be highlighted.Thank you for the answer, as I said, it couldn't be changed that way because it's more than just a folder, it's like a hard drive on my computer, hence when I click Properties only these options are available:

etc

Anyway, I've just randomly solved the issue by doing that visualisation in full screen thing again. All the icons glitched and then went to their older selves, including the My Documents icon. Weird.
Computers....what can we do???....LOL

Solve : What's the easiest way to back up a hard drive so I can reformat???

Answer»

I want to reformat b/c I'm having some issues but I would like to back up my music files and picture files first. I have WIndows XP. What's the easiest way to do this??? I've thought about an external hard drive or a zip drive. Am I on the right track??

Any tips on how to do this and it not TAKE forever??? I know it really needs to be done and I don't want to lose my files completely but I'm also going to have to do it while tending to my 12 month old and 7 year old so the quicker the better.

Thanks!
AmandaAre you looking for a paid software for this task or a free solution ? ?
For paid programs 2 that come to mind would be Ghost or Acronis True Image.
I use and have been USING Acronis for 4 or 5 years now. It's easy fairly intuitive and pretty reasonable in price.
Newegg.com currently has the best deal on it.

As far as free versions since i haven't fooled around with them for awhile i'll have to do some research.

The nice feature of the 2 above mentioned programs is they create a complete "image" of your drive...should you ever have problems you simply Restore the image and your machine is back to when the image was created including the OS, any programs you had installed and all your data.
Beats the heck out of re-installing EVERYTHING and tweaking things to the way you like them.

The images are then copied to CD/DVD's which is safer than storing them on another drive...all drives fail eventually.

Let us know and Welcome to CH !dvd write ur files... I'm looking at this Acronis site. I've never seen a program like this. Where does it back the files up too???

Thanks!
AmandaOriginally you can create a directory for them to be saved to...i usually then check them with the built in integrity check and then burn them to DVD.
They can be saved anywhere you want basically. Because it's your entire hard drive the files are on the large side...

DLoad Free TrialOk, there is:

USB - dongles (fairly small)
USB External HDD
CD/DVD
External SATA (Quite new)
Internal HDD

The quickest is external SATA, or putting a second HDD (Hard Disk Drive) into your machine.

Unless you're likely to need an external HDD, for a laptop or something.

If it were me, I'd probably put it in this order:

Internal HDD, External HDD (or iPod), CD/DVD.

Depends on how much (and how "big") it all comes to.in use an external hdd, as you can then put your files on a new computer straight from the drive. You could use a dvd and an external hdd, if you wish

Solve : Slow system/ programs not responding?

Answer»

I have windows XP
Service Pack2
Intel celeron processor 564 MHz - 128 Mb of ram
I can tell you right off I dont know 1/10th as much as the posts & replys I have read so be patient. I dont know exactly how to address some of my issues. Everything I know about a computer has been through trial & error or from the kids!
I originally had Windows 98, upgraded to XP.
I don't have that many programs or files I have added but I dont have a lot of hard drive or memory left. I would really like to know what to do to return my computer back to good running condition. I see their are files for windows 98 still on here. Are those necessary. Can I backup & remove all programs and start over?
Please don't think I am dumb. I want to learn
I have a program System Mechanic 7 I thought would help me resolve some issues but I think some of the files have been moved around and if I try to change something back to work right the next time the program scans it changes it again.
It is not recognizing my Norton Antivirus 08
ALSO My computer always starts up as if it were not shut down properly & wheen you exit programs you recieve message program not responding/ if you choose to close you will lose unsaved data / cancel / return to windows
I don't think that your computer's problem is so much of a SOFTWARE issue as a hardware issue. Your processor MIGHT have been considered fast a few years ago, but a processor that is 564 MHz is extremely slow in today's world (the best processors are EITHER dual core of quad core processors which can be found on www.intel.com or www.amd.com). Also, 128 Mb of ram is an extremely small amount of ram. Upgrade it do at least 512 Mb. If you have a desktop computer, adding ram should not be a problem. I recommend either buying a new computer or upgrading some of the components.
Hope this helps! As has been said, hardware UPGRADES should be your main concern.
For Windows XP you should look at at least 512Mb of RAM, 128Mb is very low.
A faster processor would also help, but with the motherboard you have I think it may turn out to be more cost effective to replace the machine.
But, don't give up hope.
What's this PC mainly used for? Thanks! It is an older computer & I have 2 more but I always seem to use this one. Actually I mostly use this one to search the internet & e-mail. We have a small trucking company and I communicate with our customers and locate freight. I just hate to give it up. I may look into some upgrades though. It is so old no one else would want it and I hate to see something that still has life in it go to waste. If I remove everything but Word, my email, antivirus & internet would that make much of a difference?OK, here's my advice for that machine.
1. Buy some more RAM. Head over to www.crucial.com and sue their memory advisor tool to find out what you need, then shop around. If you're not sure what to do at this stage, ask more questions, it's the best way to learn. Get at least 512Mb of RAM at the highest SPEED your board supports if it is cost effective. More RAM is probably the main thing that will help speed up your PC.
2. Perhaps buy a newer/faster hard drive, one with as much space as you will need. This will speed up many things.
3. Maybe upgrade the CPU, however I think eBay is the only place you could go and I know many people are wary of buying components from there.
4. Back up all data you want to keep onto an external drive, CD, or something like that. This should include music, letters, videos, and anything else that you want to keep.
5. Reformat and perform a fresh install of Windows XP.

Basically, with a few upgrades and some maintenance procedures, that PC could happily chug along for a while yet, as long as it's not used for anything too taxing.if it is going to cost more to upgrade than to buy a new computer you would be best buying a new one. About it going to waste, there are companys who will fix it up and donate it to charitys for people who cannot afford them

Solve : Windows start up loop?

Answer»

Our PC is only connected via telephone and is usually not online. We have a debilitating virus and I have installed AVG. But now, the PC acts as if it were logged on before and gives the log in screen that asks to SELECT the already logged on user. We have not set any users up and have never been prompted for this before. When we select that, it GOES through a "setting variables" or something similar and then just returns to the same place. Cannot access Start or any other options. Using Windows XP Personal.

Would appreciate if anyone has seen this before. Every single step in the Compaq Recovering Manual assumes you have access to the Start menu so they are all USELESS to me.Need...more...info...gasp

antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work RIGHT / installed any new software?

Try booting into Safe Mode / Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore. Choose a date prior to the problems happening.

If that doesn't work try and save all your 'stuff' to a flash DRIVE, cdrom or another media and wipe and reinstall Windows.

Solve : Message in W2K?

Answer»

when using Norton utilities, I GET a "missing file" error with the explanation "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ installShield\Professional\runtime\11\50\intel32\DotNet Installer.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll"

I have not observed any problems but then again I have no idea what this means, can somebody enlighten me.

I have a Dell Dimension, with 30Gb HDD + 15Gb HDD & 262kb ram This seems very pertinent to your problem: Cannot Access a Necessary File, mscoree.dll Thanks Soybean, but link goes to 'unavailable service'

I will try laterhttp://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=1666&messageID=19367

Quote

Situation:
You see the following message after you RUN a WinDoctor diagnostic scan from within Norton SYSTEMWORKS:

Missing file: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0700\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll."

Solution:
This message can safely be ignored. InstallShield is not really trying to use the file DotNetInstaller.exe without .NET Framework being installed. The DotNetInstaller.exe file is merely cached in the engine location for future use.

InstallShield installs DotNetInstaller.exe as part of its engine files, which is a .NET application that is used when a setup is installing .NET assemblies. DotNetInstaller.exe will not work on systems that do not have the .NET Framework, but the file is cached with the InstallShield engine files just in case it is needed in the future when the .NET Framework is installed. WinDoctor recognizes DotNetInstaller.exe as a .NET application that depends on the .NET Framework and REPORTS its findings. WinDoctor's findings are technically correct, but InstallShield always checks for the Framework before trying to use it.

So, you have two choices: ignore the error, or install ".NET Framework".what happens if you ignore???Nothing...it's harmless, but it'll keep BUGGING you.

Solve : How to change shortcuts on the quick launch bar??

Answer»

Is there any way that I can change the shortcuts on the quick launch bar, on the taskbar? I'm using WINDOWS XP SP2 pro. There sure is. Simply right-click on any of the shortcut icons and click Properties, from there you'll be able to change the properties of that shortcut.

Alternatively you can click on an empty portion of the quick launch bar. For example, to the right portion of the far right icon in the quick launch bar and click Open Window. Doing this will open a folder that contains these icons.

Finally, you can browse the the below directory, where *HOPE* is the name of the user name you USE to log into windows and change the icons from there.

C:\Documents and Settings\*HOPE*\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick LaunchThank you so much . That really helps. You can ALSO drag other applications down to the quick launch and ADD them that way. You can also change which three you can see and which ones you have to click the double ARROWS (>>) to get to by dragging them to a different position in the quick launch.

Solve : RE: Add new hardware wizard - HELP!!!!!?

Answer»

Hi,

New to the forum and hoping I am posting in the right section - if Im not im sorry - just TELL me where I need to go..
I recently bought a new SAMSUNG phone which provides a usb lead to connect to your pc. I installed the software ok but when it came to install the driver the add new hardware wizard told me that it couldn't do it and that the DATA was invalid. Now I tried both using the cd provided and downloaded the driver from the samsung website and neither worked. Installed and uninstalled several times to no avail. Eventually DECIDED that it must be a problem with samsung so I bought a bluetooth dongle instead. Today I installed the software ok but again when it came to installing the driver again I got the same message that there was a problem installing the hardware and that the data was invalid. I have spent about 6 hours trying to figure it out and I just can't. I rang dell and they were no help whatsoever. The only conclusion I can come to is that the add new hardware wizard is corrupt and i need to get it fixed. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks... Siobhan Also - Its microsoft XP that im using! Can you install anything else on USB?

Have you tried different sockets?
I can't seem to be able to install anything at the moment. I tried two phone usb drivers, the bluetooth dongle and my new camera - the add new hardware wizard just can't do it! I feel like banging my head against a brick wall its so frustrating!

Tried both usb ports....Quote from: skeogh82 on November 01, 2007, 03:13:29 AM

Solve : Test Ram?

Answer»

Hi everyone, I'm testing my RAM because I have been getting the BSOD with the eror 0xA IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL .... Now this error could be from a backup program ... which GOT restore and went bad... don't know yet.

ohh yes, I have windows xp pro 2gb ram service pack2

I have been testing my ram for "166.25 HRS"... which is almost a week.

Maybe I don't understand this program or it doesn't work because its still running.

The name of the program is docmemory diagnostic V3.1beta (c)CST inc 2006

please help... anyone and thanks

spiderQuote

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
error may be also created by overheating.

Get "Motherboard Monitor" from here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311
Check at your MB maker web SITE what are the max temps for your mobo.
Run your computer, and check your temps with MM, when error happens.

Bad memory may be another reason. I don't know why it takes that long to test it, but just try another tool.
Get "Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic" from here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Microsoft-Windows-Memory-Diagnostic-Download-3648.htmlMemory testing programs run in a loop...in other words they will run til you end them...if you have not shown any errors your memory is fine.
If it is showing errors then you need to test one stick at a time to see which one is faulty.
An hour and a half for each stick is sufficient. Thanks patio, I'm going to test my hd. I'll let you know either way and thanks again.
spider Hi, Broni and patio... well I believe I found the problem!

My HD was set to slave and my DVD burner was set to master.... how?

I was doing some testing in the past when I had some heat issues "heatsink and fan" in the past . I Just forgot to set it back. I forget why I set the dvd burner to master and the hd to slave. I was moving equipment back and forth.

until it happens again and I hope not.... I do believe I fix it.

Thanks for getting back to me about the Ram problem.
spider

Nice job If you have an IDE2 slot on that MBoard it would be a good idea to seperate the two...
Although not as common as it once was you can be experiencing a small performance hit with optical drives on the same channel as HDD's...Thanks Patio, I am having it again...

I went into the Event viewer under system and saw this error "MRXSMB"

I did delete this file in the windows/system32/drivers... its still in the recycle bin... I got this info from this link!

http://www.file.net/process/mrxsmb.sys.html

but I will put my DVD burner in my second IDE as Master... and KEEP my HD on my Mboard 1IDE.

thanks again and I hope that fix it this time!
spiderIf there is any information (additional) on this error please post. Thanks.Patio, Not only did I set my DVD burner to the 2IDE controller... I even disconnect it and the BSOD still came up.... I believe the backup program I had ... came corrupted when I restore the OS at the time.

what do you think?

thanks spider Broni, I did download Motherboard Monitor.. here the info:

case 35 c cpu27c sensor 3 0c

I hope that helps and thanks spider here's my smart CPUfan Temp info:

it says... this item allows you to choose the CPUFAN temp. If the CPU Temp is lower then the CPUFAN TEMP that you chosen and the CPUFAN will slowdown.

could this be the problem??? thanks spider

Solve : Screen stucks at "Loading your personal settings". HELP please!!!?

Answer»

My LAPTOP is able to boot up normally. But when I want to log in to my account, it stucks at "Loading your personal SETTINGS" screen. I waited for quite sometime but it is still stuck there and my profile is not uploaded. I tried many times. But discovered I am able to log in to administrator account and use it without problems. I had even done a system restore but it does not solve the problem. It was working fine till now. I had this problem before and had to reformat it. But I do not want to. Is there any way to solve this problem? Please help. I REALLY need to access to this account. If you can log in to the administrator account then you should be able to resolve this.

Log in as the admin, then open
C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\your.username
Select Tools > Folder Options > View
Select "Show hidden files and folders"

This folder contains all the information relating to your account. For the TIME being, you can access files this way.

To resolve the problem, I would try renaming the folders in C:\Documents and Settings\your.username one at a time. Then log off, and try logging on again.

eg. Rename "Application Data" to "Application Data Old"

Log off administrator

Log on as your.username

If this fails

Log on as administrator

Rename "C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application data old" back to C:\Documents and Settings\your.username\application data

Repeat this process for each folder.ohok. That's very tedious. But I will give it a try. Thanks.

Solve : Ideas Needed for Locked Down Computer?

Answer»

Okay, so I'm having a *censored* of a time with my girlfriend's computer. When you try to log on normally, the background shows that there was some sort of problem. That eventually goes away, with a background replacing it that says, essentially, "You have spyware on your computer. If you want to get rid of it, GO to (website)." All the while, there are a ton of messages about different processes trying to read memory locations and failing. I'm pretty sure that these processes are not normal start-up processes. Then, if I try to open anything, what was her background covers the entire page. You can't open up the Windows tab or anything. And when I try to open the task manager, it says, "This is prohibited by your administrator." But she has the only account on the machine.

So that is what the problem is. There is some sort of malicious software that has wreaked havoc on her computer. Luckily, I was able to start the computer in safe mode and get all the files she needed off using the command prompt. The last thing I have to do is to get the computer BACK to it's original factory settings, and then I can load her files back onto the computer. The problem is that the recovery partition (D:) doesn't seem to have anything on it... I'm hoping that when she brings over whatever she has for her computer that she has some sort of boot disk, but at this point I'm not sure how to rid her computer of this crap.

So, my question is this: what sort of other options do I have at this point?

Also, when I start the computer in REGULAR safe mode (not the command prompt), I also see another user by the alias of "Administrator". My guess was that this user is causing the problems, since my girlfriend's account was the only account in regular mode, and therefore she could not be stopping herself from opening the Task Manager. I easily logged into the Administrator account, and then I was able to open the Control Panel and create another user so that I might be able to delete the Administrator account. When I log onto either one of the other accounts in safe mode the control panel refuses to open.

I'm GUESSING it might be easiest to just delete all files that were created within the last couple of months, but I don't know how to do that. Anybody have any other ideas?Get a back up OS or a new disk and Format that thing!well, atleast we can try.

Solve : No input signal on monitor?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario S-series computer with Pentium 4 and Windows XP. When I GO to turn it on, nothing happens on the screen. I have a new video card that is set to send the signals to the monitor but I have my monitor set to have a white box that says 'No Input Signal' whenever there is none and I don't get ANYTHING on the monitor but that box. Would anyone know what I should do? I've ALSO tried plugging the monitor into the original slot that CAME with the CPU. Have you checked to make sure the new card is correctly installed (pushed in all the way and secure)?

Do you still get "No Input Signal" when you remove the new card and plug the cable into the original video card? (Is the original integrated to the motherboard or SEPARATE and attached via PCI/AGP?)

Glad I helped!

Just an FYI, dunno how you cleaned it this time, but next time, a little compressed air (in a well ventilated space) should be all you need.

Solve : Windows XP Open With?

Hi all,
I have multiple picture editing software on my computer:
-Google's Picasa2 (for picture viewing and editing)
-HP Image Zone 4.2 (came with my HP printer/scanner)
-Paint.NET (A different kind of editing)

I like PICASA best. When I DOUBLE click on a picture icon to open it, it always opens with HP Image Zone(this takes a long TIME to open).

I was wondering if it is possible to change a setting somewhere so every time I double click on a picture icon, it opens with Picasa? I'd rather not GET rid of any of the other tools.
Thanks, Alan Right click on any picture file, click on "Open with", then "Choose Program".

--DerickH Windows built-in backup will do it for you:
http://www.argentuma.com/backup/software/windows-backup.html

Quote

The Windows Backup (Microsoft Backup) program supports five methods of backing up data on your computer or network.

* Copy backup. A copy backup copies all selected files but does not MARK each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared). Copying is useful if you want to back up files between NORMAL and incremental backups because copying does not affect these other backup operations.
* Daily backup. A daily backup copies all selected files that have been modified the day the daily backup is performed. The backed-up files are not marked as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared).
* Differential backup. A differential backup copies files created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It does not mark files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is not cleared). If you are performing a combination of normal and differential backups, restoring files and folders requires that you have the last normal as well as the last differential backup.
* Incremental backup. An incremental backup backs up only those files created or changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It marks files as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared). If you use a combination of normal and incremental backups, you will need to have the last normal backup set as well as all incremental backup sets in order to restore your data.
* Normal backup. A normal backup copies all selected files and marks each file as having been backed up (in other words, the archive attribute is cleared). With normal backups, you need only the most recent copy of the backup file or tape to restore all of the files. You USUALLY perform a normal backup the first time you create a backup set.

Solve : Please HELP! Files and folders moved and copied themselves???

Answer»

Hello there people,

I know that it's quite rude to get to my question immediately without introducing myself, but i am desperate! I have an external hard drive which contains FILES and folders, yesterday i noticed that some files and folders went from folder a to folder b.

The problem is that i did not move them! Some folders got copied? And some deleted folders actually reappeared for no reason at all? The copied folders and the deleted ones contain no files?

I did various scans with Avast Pro edition, CCleaner and Spybot but without any result. I use Comodo firewall and i BOclean, so i guess my computer is pretty solid, but i am pretty worried about this.

I checked the disk for errors but no errors were found, what could be the problem?

Does XP move folders randomly if the folder is too full?

Please HELP me.....

Thank you,

David.... you know, may be you're infected by a virus.boot up in safemode...try to run your newest virus scanner...the updated one Thank you i'll try..... I'll post my findings here...

Something very like that happened to my Seagate Free Agent 320 GB external hard drive. I had just copied over a huge multimedia collection, lots of folders full of music videos, films, mp3 collections, and the next time I went to check them out, I had lots of folders and sub folders, but they were all completely empty!

Suppressing the urge to (a) scream out loud (I had, in a rash moment, moved rather than copied the folders), and (b) start fiddling around with disk tools -- I did a bit of Googling and (1) used the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar to stop the drive (2) completely powered down the computer and removed the plug from the wall (3) unplugged the USB cable and PLUGGED it into another USB socket (4) powered back up again. Everything was as it should be.

If you right click the drive in Explorer, choose Properties from the menu, click the Hardware tab, highlight the correct disk drive, click the Properties button, choose the Policies tab, you can see if the drive is optimised for performance or quick removal.

Performance implies write caching which can result in a corrupted filesystem if you unplug the drive (or there is a power failure) when there are pending writes that need flushing from the buffer (This is what the safe removal icon does).

Quick removal implies always writing everything to the drive immediately which can slow down performance of the whole system, but means you don't have to use the icon, and (in theory) you are less likely to suffer filesystem damage. Choose the one you feel happiest with - you can always change it if you don't like it.

Thank you for your help!

I applied every tip you gave to me, and i hope that everything stays the way it's supposed to be.

Again thank you, and i'll keep you posted about any possible errors....

Peace,

David....

Solve : Administration Dissapeared?

Answer»

I couldnt FIND this by searching. I created a new account in Windows XP for a child, after the computer restarted the Administration was gone and the account I created was now the administrator.

All the files are gone and I am clueless on where they went and how to get them back if POSSIBLE. If anyone can give me an idea I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you.

E-Mail address removed.Remove your email address from your post to avoid tons of junk mail in your account!!!Ok well if you've made a new account for a child that account by default will get admin rights ..... you have to disable that feature and limit the childs account .... once done ...make yourself a new account under administrator.....

Tony

and yes , if you do tend to return ..... don't post your email on a public forum ..... we are very nice people here but who knows whos lurking in the members area .

If you get stuck i will go through creating accounts on xp or pro step by step , just post a reply so i know this isn't a dead topic .
The account that disappeared... was that the default Administrator account? I.e. was it called Administrator?

Because XP hides this default account if another account with admin privileges is created. Yes, sorry about the email, I appreciate you taking it off... I tried to make the new account limited but you can't even click on that RADIO button... You may need to log into safemode to make the changes...if these are the only 2 accounts on the machine after removing admin rights from the kid account upon re-boot the Admin account may re-appear.
This is NORMAL.

Solve : The Order of things ...?

Answer»

Hi All,

I'm not SURE how long ago - perhaps two to three weeks. I noticed that when I started Explorer the order of "My Docs", "My Comp", and "My Network Places" had changed.

Now "My Comp" is atop of the directory tree ahead of "My Docs" (Refer to attached image).

Does anyone know why this occurred and how to fix ??

Cheers,
Cameron

[getting space - attachment deleted by admin]Did you use PowerToys XP to get those (to me) silly names for My COMPUTER and My Documents? If so, I expect that's how they got switched. Check the First Icon setting under Desktop in PowerToys XP.

Anyhow, Powertoys should PUT it right.

Thanks for the reply contrex - will check it out. Many thanks for the suggestion contrex, you were right on the mark.
Can't even recall making the change.
Again, many thanks.

Solve : joining multiple workgroups in XP??

Answer»

I have a laptop that I take to work everyday. It is set up for my home network (using the setup wizard) and works fine. I am ABLE to use the printer that is on my desktop at home without any problems. I have internet connection at work and can use internet without problems. I WANT to be able to print, using a printer that is on another computer on network. How do I join this network without screwing up things for when I am at home? Can you have profiles such as home and work so that I can KEEP both? If I run the setup wizard and use my work's workgroup name, then I assume I won't be able to connect at home unless I run wizard again, which would be a pain in the a** to keep running wizard!

thanks
billA computer can belong to only one domain or one workgroup at a time. Are there DHCP servers in the office and at home? What are the IP addressing schemes in both networks?

You might want to utilize Windows XP's "Alternate CONFIGURATION" to make it easier to switch between your home and office networks, if one of those networks uses DHCP.

To configure TCP/IP for an alternate configuration:

1. Open Network Connections

2. Right-click the network connection that you want to configure, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (for all other connections), click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component, and then click Properties.

4. On the General tab, click Obtain an IP address automatically.

5. On the Alternate Configuration tab, click User configured and then type appropriate values for the following:

• IP address
• Subnet mask
• Default gateway
• Preferred and alternate DNS server
• Preferred and alternate WINS server

I don't think this will work because I have DHCP servers at home and at work? Quote from: hammerash on October 22, 2007, 05:21:49 PM

I don't think this will work because I have DHCP servers at home and at work?

Then just connect to each printer (at home and at work) via its IP address ("Standard TCP/IP Port"), and each time you boot up on one of the networks, you'll be able to access it. Here are some pages that can assist you with this:
