Solve : Hopeless...?

Answer»

I feel hopeless, guys

I've been working on a project for work for the last 5-6 hours. I had originally started to work on it at the office and emailed the file to myself. When I went to my email at home, I did not save the attachment but opened with WordPad (it is a .doc file... I don't have microsoft word at home). Then WordPad comes up and I start working on my project for many many hours, saving once in a while. I decide to send it back to myself through email. But as I look for the file that I need to attach, I see that I can not find it. I had already closed down the wordpad (yes, I've saved dozens of times). I look all over, even do a seearch for the file but it could not be found anywhere. So then theres only one last hope for me, so I send myself an email with an ATTACHEMENT that says "Hello." I open the attachement with WordPad (not save), then I change it to Hello, everyone and save. I close the file and look for it, but I see that this one has also dissapeared in any searches. Then as i go to word pad, I realize under file it says 1- C:\DOCUME~1\...Hello ... I see that if I press on that, I go back to the words "Hello, everyone".. so I realized I can do the same for my project, but unfortunetly it only shows my last 4 documents I've opened, my prokect not being one of them

IS THERE ANY way I can get my file back? I looked through DOCUME (Local/Temp) but i can't find it anywhere. and the only way I can reach my Hello, everyone file is though wordpad.. is there anyway then that I can retrieve my project?

Any help would be appreciated! THANKS!Look under My Recent Documents (from the start menu).

Also check under the File menu of Wordpad, there's a section of recent documents there.
Sorry, just realized you've done that.

Finally, check C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files, where Username is your user name on Windows. So let me see if I get this...

You're at work & you send a file home. You open the attached file but don't save it to your computer because you don't have Word. You work on the file with Wordpad & save it. You decide to send it back to yourself but as you look for the file you can't find it.

I think because you have edited an attachment, the attachment will stay edited attached to the email. Obviously, because you didn't originally save the attachment to your HD before you started working, you won't find it (when you attach a file it will be from your HD).

You are BASICALLY trying to search for documents you have edited in an email & which are not on your HD, that is why you can't find them.

The original message may still have the updated document still attached to it, as this was the document you were working on - although I'm not sure if it saves that way.

Have you tried 'forwarding' the message to yourself?Quote from: neljan on January 16, 2008, 12:35:42 AM

I think because you have edited an attachment, the attachment will stay edited attached to the email.

That's not how it works. Especially if he's using a webmail client (Hotmail, Gmail, etc.).

When you open an attached file from most POP mail clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), Windows creates a temp file of it. You aren't editing the file attached to the mail.

When opening a webmail attachment, it has to be downloaded and saved to the hard disk whether you tell it to or not (in his case, he didn't). If you open it from the web, the file is instead downloaded and saved to the temporary internet files where it will remain until it is deleted. You can't edit the file attached to the e-mail on a webmail server, it MUST be downloaded first.

Skamal10, speaking of which, what kind of mail are you using?Yeah that makes alot more sense quaxo, thanks for that.

If he has saved it & forwards the message on won't it be the updated document?Quote from: neljan on January 16, 2008, 12:35:42 AM

Yup, thats right.. thats what happened. So your saying, maybe the it was saved over the attachement? And I think I'll try to forward it right now

So I tried to forward the message to myself, (altho I dont think it works like that), and when I did, the file attached to it was the original original.. This might be because I'm at work right now, so when I get home I can try again

and BTW sry for the spam.Yep.

Since you're using a webmail client, the attachment will definitely not be changed (I'm 100% sure of this).

Open your temp internet files. Now, when you look, the file most likely won't be named what it was originally. IE changes the name of it as it downloads it. You'll need to look for the specific type of file (such as DOC, or whatever the extension of the file was). Sort the list by type, this should make it easier to search.

As for forwarding it to yourself, like I said before, attachments don't get changed. Whatever computer you were working on has a copy of the attachment on it, that's the file you need to find. I recommend you find it as soon as possible, because if it's like I think, in the temporary files, it will get deleted eventually when its time expires.Quote from: quaxo on January 16, 2008, 09:37:08 AM

Okay so I have 5 temporary internet files (one for owner.. one for default..one for sum ohte rthing in owner.. got confused so i searched through all of them).. you said the name of the file does not stay, but the extenson does? I believe it is RTF, maye DOC. but most likely RTF.. but i could not find any RTF files that had the file. it may have been deleted... I say this because first i CANT find it and secondly i searched the name of the file (but this time i let them show me hidden files) it found some bu tthey were not updated... also in Temp (not internet files) I see a lot of TMP files but cant open themm.. they might be it? ThanksQuote from: skamal10 on January 16, 2008, 05:31:03 PM
you said the name of the file does not stay, but the extenson does?
Yes, usually. Either IE or the webmail client renames it.

Quote

What was the extension of the original attachment? It should have kept that.

Quote
it may have been deleted...
A very good possibility, but you mentioned finding earlier versions of it that haven't been deleted, so it's quite possible that it is still lurking somewhere.

also in Temp (not internet files) I see a lot of TMP files but cant open themm.. they might be it? Thanks

I doubt it. I'll do some experimenting when I get back to the shop and see if I can't recreate the circumstances and see what happens.

Was the original file RTF or DOC?

Solve : Reoccuring Problem I can't shift?

Answer»

Firstly I should probably tell you that I don't know a lot about computers. I just like mine to work and I've had my dad try to help with this problem but nothing we do shifts it. After a few months it comes back again. I think it's a virus of some sort so hopefully I'm in the right place but who knows. Bear with me if I'm missing some sort of online etiquette, I know various sites have their own and can get offended if this is broken so I apologise if I unintentionally do this.

Don't worry. I'm on a different computer that's never had this particular problem but it's so old that you can practically see it's brain ticking, and stalling lol. So no worries about me infecting anyone else.

Right, my baby computer I purchased a little under 2 years ago is an Advent T9317. It runs XP and has something I've never FIGURED out called a 'Media Service Center.'

The problem I have is that for some reason I keep getting a hundred different errors popping up stating that programme's have had to close down because they have ENCOUNTERED a problem and need to close. These programmes include;

- Media Center Receiver Service.
- Doctor Speedtouch.
- Windows Genuine Advantage Notification.
- The System RESTORE Programme (I tried to do this to no avail)
- Wuauclt.exe
- Quicktime

The 'Media Center Receiver Service message pops up about once every half minute, and the 'Wuauclt.exe' one every time I close the error window. I can't scan the computer for a virus because the application won't open (McAfee)

When this has happened before my dad has managed to reformat the computer. We've done this about 4 times now and it doesn't seem to solve the problem because it comes back and quite frankly I'm sick of it. Is it a virus? Anyone know what to do? I don't really want to take it back to PC World and have them charge me £150 to look at it, and I'm running out of ideas. Plus I'd really like to get back to playing the Sims2 as soon as humanly possible.I don't think, you have infection problem. Since you did reformat 4 times, and Windows doesn't work correctly, you may have some hardware problem.
Go to your hard drive manufacturer site, and download free diagnostic utility.Well, firstly thanks for moving this for me Broni.

Secondly can anyone tell me how I find out who my hard drive manufacturer is? I mean I brought it from PC World but I think they're just the retailers.

Probably a stupid question but I have no idea who they are, or how to find out.Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Open it, click Computer, then Summary.
In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary
Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Don't include anything under line Debug - PCI

We'll have all info needed.Ok, here goes...

I don't know, if it's gonna fix it, you'll find out after running that tool.Bad News. I don't think it worked.

I did two tests, the quick and extended one on;

Physical Drive 1
Model Number: - WDCWD25O0JS-00NCB1 (SATA)
Serial Number: - WD-WCANK8O25550
Capacity: - 250GB

Both the Quick Test and the Extended Test passed. The extended test took just under 1h30 so I presume it did do it properly.

It stated that on the three USB ports the Smart Status wasn't available. They're labeled as follows;
2) Generic Flash HS-CF (USB)
3) Generic Flash HS-MS/SD (USB)
4)Generic Flash HS-SM (USB)

The programme also does something called 'writing zeros' but I didn't know what that was so I didn't do it, it told me to backup all of my files and drives before doing it which I don't think I can. Or should I have done this?

I also got hold of 2 of the most persistent error data reports (I have no idea if this is useful, but here goes)

Error Signature
Media Center Reciever Service
szAppName: ehrecvr.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2715.2941
szModName: ksproxy.qx

szModName: wuauclt.exe
szModVer: 7.0.6000.381
offset: 00008881

Any idea on what to do now?I'd say, good news, rather, since your HD is OK.
'writing zeros' would wipe out your HD.

wuauclt.exe is part of Windows Updates
ehrecvr.exe is part of Media Center Receiver Service, which you need only, if you have TV tuner on your computer

Let's see what you got there...

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
Click on Download HijackThis Installer
Post HijackTHis log.HijackThis would not open. Said that it had encountered a problem and needed to close.

Because I can hardly do anything on my computer I'm having to download the programmes you suggest onto my old computer and transfer them to the NEWER one on a memory stick. The type on that programme I decided to use was the 'installer' version. Do you think it would work if I transfered the '.zip' format one? Only, I only have one set of leads for both computers so I'm having to continually swap them, thought that I'd ask your opinion before trying the other format. I can't even get the internet browsers to work on my newer one, neither internet explorer or firefox will open. Bit of a pain really.

That's also why it takes me a while to come back to you with answers, so I'm sorry for that.

Edit: - I'm just going to try it. Who knows, right? I might get lucky :-)Didn't work and I got another error message;

RUNDLL

Error loading c:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) Initialization routine failed.

However, on the plus side I am getting very good at knowing which plug goes where :-) Feel like chucking the computer out of the window though and would if I could afford to buy a new one.Your computer seems to be really messed up.
Try to reinstall Windows over the top.Yes it is really messed up. I probably won't buy another one off them ever again because I've never had this many problems with a PC It's depressing when things won't work.

How do I go about trying to install windows over the top? I can't reformat it, I get an error when I try to open windows restore. Loading windows over the top will cause me to loose all of my data won't it? Will it be like reformatting the computer? Again sorry to ask what probably seem like stupid questions, but if I did something wrong and added to the problem I'd really feel like a 1st class idiot.

Thanks for all of your previous suggestions mind, it's just frustrating that I seem to have an obscure problem that won't go away.In stalling over the top won't delete your data, but you may try Repair option, first.
Put Windows CD in, and restart computer. It'll bring you to Windows installation screen, and it'll give you Repair option.

Solve : "Open With"?

Answer»

Hey guys my partner decided to have aplay on the computer today and while combing through every possible email that she could get her HANDS on looking for something that isnt bloody there, she came across an ATTACHMENT with ext .DEC (a file used for my magic online game).

She has now set notepad and acrobat reader as the programs to open it when they DONT do the job.

How can I delete those programs from wanting to open it so it goes back to being a program opened by nothing.

Kind Regards,

Terry

[emailprotected]PLEASE remove your email address from your post.

As for your question....don't try to open ".dec" files.I'm not sure what a .dec file is but have you tried opening a folder then tools > folder options > file types (scroll to dec or just type dec) then 'restore'?

.dec isn't present in my list, but this could be because I don't have an application installed that uses .dec files (as I said, I don't know what it is).You can always use 'System Restore' to an earlier time when
you did not have the problem.

Solve : Windows XP can't start...system32\hal.dll missing or corrupted...?

Answer»

Hello all!

Here what happened. I just bought a used computer. It comes with Windows XP .It's OEM so I don't have any related CDs. Yesterday I wanted to see what actually in the hard drive, so I enabled the computer to let me see the hidden files . While looking around, I found out that I had a second Temp folder (in Documents & Settings folder) besides the one in Windows folder. So I clicked on it, I couldn't believe the junks that were in it. I thought to myself: why do I need this second folder so I deleted it. Now I have a horror of turning off the computer after SURFING and still have junks in the system. What I usually do is (besides asking my brower to automatically delete Temp files when I close it) to open the Temp folder and delete what is there myself. On top of that I also run a free program called Easycleaner . After deleting the second Temp folder, I ran the Easycleaner. There poped up a few warnings not to delete such and such files because they are system files. This have never happened before. Then I couldn't remember the computer crashed right away or after I turned it off but when it' s turned on again , it couldn't start. What I got was the error message: Windows can't start... hal.dll missing or corupted...Please re-install ...I spent about 5 hours yesterday looking around (including this forum) for solutions. I tried a few suggestions like to get to the command prompt but I had no luck. I also used the F8 and F12 keys , but no luck there. I even put my Windows 98s boot floppy disk in, but I only got the command prompt for A drive , couldn't change it to the C drive. Anyway, Windows XP can't start, no related CDs, have the old computer with Windows 98, CD rom, floppy disk.. Any suggestion from anyone would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.
You will need to DLoad and create the XP bootdisks from Microsoft.

Once you have done that Travel Here for instructions on using the Recovery Console.
Skip the first section which deals with installing the RC which is not what we want to do here...
Start in the 2nd section and read the instructions on How to Use the Recovery Console...

Once you are in the command window you want to run fixboot and fixmbr....

After running both of these remove any floppies and re-boot.

Good Luck.

For FUTURE protection contact the Co. that sold you the machine and ask for instructions on creating a bootable Recovery CD from the hidden partition. The system needs to be running properly to do this.Thank you patio for your reply,

After many hours, I managed to replace one problem with another! Now the error message is :

Windows could not start because of an error in software.
Please report this problem as:
Load needed DLLs for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem.

As I stated, my Windows XP is not purchased separately; I have the (OEM) COA sticker that comes with the machine, but I suspect that it's not kosher and therefore the Windows XP. I guess then that I can't contact official sources for help. So I am screwed heh!

I am able to access the Recovery console using the floppy disk drive as you suggested. Other than that , I am not able to boot the computer into anything.

Any idea anyone?

Thank you again and Take care. Thanx for posting back...

Did you run the following from above ? ?
Quote

Once you are in the command window you want to run fixboot and fixmbr....

If so and there was no change in the situation you will probably have no choice but to borrow a WinXP CD that matches your INSTALLED version...

Once you get one of those repeat the steps above using the XP CD and also run sfc /scannow as well from a command prompt...Thank for the follow up

Yes I did run fixboot and fixmbr. I also ran the bootcfg and the dir command to see if the hal.dll was there. Well, it's gone. So I down loaded a copy of the file on the web and move it to system32 folder, rebooted , got the new error message. Actually, on top of this new error message are these lines:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\system32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\system32\KDCOM.DLL

These files were all there when I checked again. According to the new error message, these files need to be loaded for kernel ( I MIGHT be wrong here). Anyway, I just don't know what to do next.

Take care.

Solve : Unreadable e-mail attachments?

Answer»
MANY times I receive e-mail attach. that are not able to be read.
This is an example of one of the attachments.

Can someone tell me if the fault is with me or the sender? That's just extra header information. Is there something from the email you're sure you are missing, or is this just extra junk? There are 6 additional pages of this KIND of STUFF, but in the last page the e-mail does seem like a joke message.

Question I'm CONCERNED about is "Why am I receiving all this extra data?"It means the sender does not know how to properly forward an e-mail without all the useless header info...

Solve : personalized my startup tone?

Answer»

how can i personalized my startup tone everytime i open and close my computer?
thanks for any tips...
Assuming you're using XP, go to control panel>sounds and audio devices. Then go to the sounds tab. Under program EVENTS find the sound you WANT to change (start windows/windows logon) and change it to whatever sound you want. It needs to be a .wav FILE (ie mp3s won't work)
thanks dude!!!
what if i choose a song has long duration?is this allowable? It can be as long as you want...you'll find it difficult to run anything else however until it finishes.what audio format will be used to change my startup tone? CAUSE when i try this, the only format there is "sound (*.wav)" and the music that available in this format are the default tones of windows... is there any suggestions? You're going to have to change the format of the sound you want, I suggest audacity ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ ) and then you'll have to navigate to that folder where its saved and then thats it!you mean, i will change the format into .wav? ok i will try that..
but, audacity? is this a freeware?Yep.Do keep the sound short though, as PATIO said.

Solve : Windows seems to boot, but...?

Answer»

I just got a hand-me-down Windows 98 machine for my kids. I loaded a stupid VeggieTales game and now when the computer boots, all I get is the background/wallpaper. All the FAQ and searching I have done on this site has just uncovered instructions that involve GOING through Start and Run, options I don't have.

Can I uninstall this program through DOS? If so, how? Help! Much obliged.Find out what still WORKS. Can you startup in "Safe Mode"? (Tap the F8 key about once a second as the computer is starting up and then select "Safe Mode" from the startup menu that should appear.)If you can't boot into safe mode or get the same result, try pressing winkey+R. This is the keyboard shortcut for going to start and pressing run.Oops. I forgot to mention in the first place that Safe Mode gave me no relief. It still acts like it's locked up in Safe Mode. I have now tried (what I think is) the winkey + R with no success. I assume the winkey is one of those down near the space bar next to ALT.

Thanks for trying to help. Any other ideas? The winkey is the button with the windows logo on it. Does Ctrl-Alt-Delete work?If you can boot into DOS, then work your way to the C:\Windows\Command subdirectory. Now type scanreg /restore That should GIVE you a list of registry restore dates. Choose one PRIOR to the problem happening.

Solve : Help... Stuck with clean windows Install to Hard Drive?

I am working on an old computer for my son to use. Details of Issue:

COMPAQ 5WV270
Installing Windows ME new copy
Created Boot Disk
Erased old Partitions
Created and Formatted Partitions through FDISK, followed all INSTRUCTIONS properly.
BIOS boot order is set - CD-ROM, Floppy, Harddrive
Upon REBOOT with boot disk, I choose start with CD-ROM assistance
All seems to load ok, it tells me my CD ROM is drive E
I place the windows CD into the drive, and command - E:\setup
it tells me bad command or file name.
I have tried - E:\install, E:\setup.exe, differnet drive letters with same commands.
NOTHING
starts the install of the new windows CD.
The boot disk ssems to have the correct drivers on it, it does recognize the lerrter for the CD-ROM,
but all I get is "bad command or file name".
Can anyone assist. My computer knowledge is limited. Thanks.

Depending on the CDRom driver used on the bootdisk your drive designation may be different...
Try R: setup which is the default CD drive setting for the OAKRom driver on most bootdisks...
Even though your drive is E: it will designate it as R: in the boot process....

Good Luck. Thanks Patio for your response.

I attempted this and go this - "invalid drive specification" for "r"

Any other suggestions?

I am prepared to cut a check to anyone that can help me through this. Thanks...
At your command prompt type in EVERY letter of the alphabet starting with D: but add /dir...
In other words D: /dir
E: /dir
F: /dir
You will eventually wind up with a directory that does not give an error message...
Choose that letter and type Setup and hit Enter...Tried this, my cdrom is E: , but it does nothing with the setup command.
I did type E: dir and it read the cd in the drive as:
1 file found
MSMIL ISO 400 MB

Any other ideas?? ThanksYou're USING a burned ME cd and someone burned it the wrong way.
The iso file should have been burned as an image instead of as an ordinary data disc. How do you burn it as an image? If this is a burned disc and not an original Windows CD, there's nothing we can do to help.

I suggest you purchase a full copy of the OS of your choice.Boy, I'm really reaching here but if I remember right you need to get into the i386 folder on the cd. Now do a DIR with a *.exe

Solve : Monitor Blew --- WORTH FIXING??

Answer»

I purchased a Hercules 17" monitor almost 5 years ago. Last YEAR it went TOTALY black and would not power up. (Price paid about $250-$300 from CompUSA) I then bought a new 22" monitor for $295 and my PC usage is fine now.

I've had the old monitor sitting on top of my bedroom dresser for too long now.

I am sure I can find a new 17" now for around $200 or less but I hate to toss it. (I have friends that could use a 17")

My Question: Does it pay to get it FIXED?? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Quote from: MomNEEDShelp on January 20, 2008, 01:13:27 PM

....

I am sure I can find a new 17" now for around $200 or less but I hate to toss it. (I have friends that could use a 17")

That's an easy one.
Give it to those friends.
Let them decide if it is worth fixing.

Quote
My Question: Does it pay to get it fixed??

That depends.
If you know somebody that can look at it - cheap - then ok.
If you're going to have to pay a $100 flat fee or something like that, then probably not.

It's a CRT monitor, right? (like a TV) not a flat screen, right?
I'm wondering if a TV repair shop might be cheaper than a computer shop.
Couldn't hurt to ask around.

I've always felt that the more "broken" something is, the easier it is to fix.
And you've SAID that it is totally dead. Like - no power at all. Right?

I'd start by looking inside for a simple fuse. If it has one, and if it blew, that would produce that effect. A fuse is cheap and easy to replace, and lots of electronic stuff has one.

But - that's me. If you take the cover off a CRT monitor (not a flat screen),
and go poking around, you need to know ahead of time that there are certain areas in there with very high voltage. High enough to hurt you if you touch them.

If it is a blown fuse, the hard part is figuring out why it blew. If it was a fluke, then you've got a cheap and easy fix. If it keeps blowing every time it is replaced, then you've got potential for a much more time consuming fix. That means more money.

Thanks so much Willy! HONESTLY, the more I think of it, the less I want to even try. My dresser needs some free space. (Finally)

The prices have come down so much that it isn't even worth the effort.

To answer your questions though....I think it is a CRT although it is thin like the one I recently bought. It is not bulky and box-like if that is what you mean. (Hercules ProphetView)

Thanks again ALL!!!!!!!!!

That is what I meant.
CRT is Cathode Ray Tube. That's a picture tube. Similar to what an old TV had.

Quote
(Hercules ProphetView)

Only did a quick google on that, and it appears to be an LCD, not a CRT type monitor.
I don't know much about LCD monitors, so I can't comment on how to go about fixing it, or if it is worth it. By the numbers you've used though, I still doubt it is worth it.

In most cases, it's not worth it.

But if you can find a cheap general electronics repair shop, they might be able to fix it. I managed to get one fixed for $10 one time. I'm sure not everyone might be so lucky, but you never know.

Solve : Minimize to taskbar annoyance?

Answer»

More of an ANNOYANCE than a problem, for that I apologise...

I have noticed that with some applications (IE7 for example) I am unable to minimize them by clicking on the taskbar. INSTEAD, I have to navigate to the application I wish to minimize via the taskbar then minimize it by using the top right hand corner button.

This is a PAIN when multitasking, is there a fix?

Solve : Reverting back to XP from Vista. XP install won't start.?

Answer»

I decided to TAKE Vista Ultimate for a spin since I had a disc for it. Don't much care for it, too many problems.

Anyway, so I put my XP Pro CD in and tried to boot from it so I could reinstall, after the "press any key to boot from the CD" message the screen remains black and setup never starts, but the hard drive has constant activity. It remained this way for nearly 2 hours.

I used Vista's setup to remove the Vista partition. XP setup STILL won't start. Any suggestions?I would zero the drive just to make sure nothing on it is messing up the setup.
I prefer DBAN for that. Depending on who made the drive, the diagnostic tool from the manufacturer might be able to do a zero wipe. This drive runs 3 partitions, and a second drive with 3 more. I don't want them all wiped. Will the XP setup boot if you disconnect the offending hdd? Good idea, however...

I just installed Fedora. It seems to have fixed my problem. After Fedora's setup finished, I put in the XP setup disc and restart. Setup started RIGHT up. Should be fine from here. Thanks Deerpark.LOL
Well leave it to a LINUX distro to clean up Vista's mess. haha my thoughts EXACTLY

Solve : Unknow Error?

I think that the title just said error. Not sure didn't see if happened again. There was nothing saing about what had caused it.If it hasn't happened again, it may have just been an isolated INCIDENT and there might not be a problem. I recommend you do a full virus scan just in case.I tried runinng scf/scannow and it came up with a window saing that windows can't find 'scf/scannow' make sure you typed in the name correctly, an then try again. To shearch for a file, click the start button, and then click shearch. I tried shutting it down under guest and the one I use. Its not an adminastor. There is a space between sfc and /scannow...Quote from: QUAXO on January 17, 2008, 10:37:34 AM

Solve : pc take 20 minutes to POST?

Answer»

Hi all,

It's my first TIME on this forum and it looks great.

I need some good advice.

I own an Acer 510 Pc, which I bought about 2 months ago. Its about to be sent back to Acer unless someone can help me.

My system takes about 20 minutes before it BOOTS. Its stall on the initial Acer screen and will not ever allow me into the bios for about 20 minutes.

I have restored the system back to the original state with my restore disks . I have also set the bios to the default setting.

I have also tried a system scan for viruses and adware.

Changed the power cable and socket in case of a short.

Nothing seem to help.

I have added no additional hardware

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

ColinIf you've made no changes to the system and it's still under warranty, I'd send it back. Sounds like something might be faulty.

You can usually press a key to hide the splash screen and view the POST. Try TAB, that's common on many SYSTEMS. Might LET you see where it's getting stuck. Thanks for the advice.

I will try it.

Thats me offline for another 20 minutes (LOL)Hi quaxo,

No joy.

My system uses a wireless keyboard and I tried every key.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

When did this START happening ?
Any new Hardware/Software installed recently ?
What version of Windows ?
How old is the machine ?

Solve : Bottlenecks?

Answer»

Hello. I just ran a registry clean software for the first time and one of the issues is "BOTTLENECKS of windows system" which it says it can correct automatically.

Can someone tell me what a bottleneck is and if there would be any damage to my system by allowing the software to do so?

I have windows XP Home; the software is advanced windowscare personal V2.6

Thanks for any help. Bottleneck generally means a particular aspect or PART of a system that is the cause of a slowing down of the system.

I'm not familiar with WindowsCare personal V2.6; it's not a software I ever RECALL being mentioned in the forum. But, if you can't trust it to safely do what it's supposed to do, it's not worth having. I gather it's not freeware. You might be better off with CCleaner, which is freeware.

Perhaps someone who is familiar with WindowsCare will comment on it.

If you WANT to proceed and have WindowsCare execute it's corrective ACTIONS, be sure to backup your registry before doing so.

Solve : Windows XP - computer not communicating with ethernet?

Answer»

My computer is about a YEAR and a half old, has Windows XP and over the last few days was lagging me out of programs. It is now not communicating with the ethernet at all. The computer dealer's tech assistance is TELLING me I need to wipe out the old Windows XP and reinstall because SOMETHING has become corrupted. This means a complete wipe of all programming on computer and reinstallation. This seems pretty drastic. Are there other options?Do you have an antivirus on it with latest definitions? Just odd that you cant get out through ethernet and programs are closing on you. I've seen DoS ( Denial of Service )Virus's eat up all bandwidth and cause no internet and programs to either not open or kick out.

Either way, I'd say you are looking at a rebuild. And if a virus is present, you will need to clean the data if important and infected.

Easiest rebuild is if you have a system restore CD set and an extra hard drive or were planning on a HD upgrade, this is the perfect time for that upgrade. Install clean new or used HD and remove old HD, Install clean OS, and then install latest AV with latest definitions and either introduce your original HD back to the system as a slave drive or get a cheap bare external HD CASE and make it into an external drive. Then scan the drive. The USB method is the safest, since if you waited until your system was booted off the new HD and Real-Time AV software was running you plug in the external HD and if anything tries to make a move at the clean drive it should be shot down by the AV. Plugging the drive in as a slave, could pose a creep of the virus before the AV service has started. I would also suggest makeing sure that all works perfect with internet etc before introducing that drive, just in case after you introduce it you see the same results. If the same results are found after you KNOW that it was behaving and now once again its cant connect to the internet, maybe a new virus creeped into the new HD.

Other tell tale sign of a DoS virus infection is that your network connection will show lots of activity broadcasting when nothing should be going on. Also if you look in the Task Manager you will usually see the CPU pegging to 100% at idle or a heart beat EKG appearance on the graph with equal interval spikes as the virus is in a broadcast loop to try to spread to other computers on the network and out on the internet.

Good Luck!

DaveThanks for the advice, will look for the signs you've mentioned and raise with the computer company as well. A new HD is even more drastic but better than wasting time and money doing something that's not effective.Quote

Hooray! Rock and Roll! That did it. is there anything else I need to clean-up? What about all my virus spyware programs. What to keep? what to dump? Thanks.

Great! I'm glad you're computer is finally BACK to normal.

It wouldn't hurt for you to keep all those security apps, obviously McAfee did a poor job of protecting you. You can remove HiJackThis now, you can always download the newest version again if a situation like this arises plus you can REALLY damage your PC by removing the WRONG things. I suggest making a habit of scanning your machine once a week with SUPERANTISPYWARE and/or Ad-Aware at the very least, don't forget to update the detection databases first. You also might want to look into Spyware Terminator which offers free real-time protection.

Also, now that you are back to normal I recommend turning system restore back on and setting a new restore point.

That was alot of HARD work. Thank you for being tenacious. Suggestions for support of your efforts?

Solve : runtime termination?

Answer»

Perhaps some nice techie gentleman can help me, sort of a new at this. My pc is running on Win98SE without a printer. I was trying to instal a free pdf program where I could send a document to print and the pdf program appears as a printer (Nova pdf lite) . This program REQUIRES .NET Framework 2.0, which is installed. When attempting to install the pdf program, the following comes up, "requested runtime to TERMINATE in an unusual WAY". The program does not work. This happened on another program as well. Interestingly, both PROGRAMS are supposed to run on Win98 platform. are you sure you have .NET framework 2.0, and not an earlier version? check under "add/remove programs".Yes, definitely. The error is in: \windows\system\msiexec.exeCan you post whole, EXACT error?

Solve : WinXP CD Keys?

Answer»

I need some help! I have a Toshiba Laptop with a legal XP Home OS. As usual, it only came with a Restore CD, that reloads the ton of programs I don't need. Obviously, using the Add/Remove program in Device MANAGER leaves much stuff I don't want, and bits and pieces of the stuff it says it removes. I have tried to use nLite to make a usable bare copy of XPHome, but that won't work.
I also have a standard boxed XPHome set that has not been USED. I would like to be able to keep that Key for another computer. My question is...does anyone know a way to use the boxed CD with my Laptop's Key? I have tried it, but it will not accept the Laptop key, insisting on the boxed installation key. Can the CD be used with the boxed key, and then changed after installation, so that when I contact Microsoft, it will show the Laptop key, while leaving the original key usable? Thank you. ZygmoI'm SORRY but I don't believe that is possible.
Cd-keys are version specific. The restore disc uses an OEM cd-key while the boxed version uses a retail cd-key. OEM keys don't work for retail versions of XP and vice versa. No, it isn't possible...Deerpark is correct.
Contact Toshiba for the procedure to create a bootable install CD that is on a hidden partition on the laptop.

They will provide the instructions.
If not you can request a CD from them and there should only be a small shipping charge...Ok. Thanks. There was no hidden partition on this laptop....the restore disc has everything on it. (except the capability to install a barebones XPHome, of course) Also, I was told by the salesman that if I ever formatted the HD, my warranty would be voided, which is kind of funny because the restore CD itself formats the HD. So, what I did was purchased another HD, and kept the original one untouched, just in case. The warranty just expired, but I had formatted a few times with no problems...have had XP Pro, several versions of Linux, and a couple of dual boot XP/Linux installations.
By the way, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L-25 S121. The Mandriva One 2008 Linux installs and WORKS great. This linux version has 3D DESKTOPS, and if you set up a dual boot system with WinXP, it reads and writes to NTFS partitions perfectly. All hardware is recognized, and the wireless networking sets up and works automatically.
Thanks again for the responses to my question.

Solve : Messenger hotmail inbox annoyance?

Answer»

Sorry if this is in the wrong section...

I use messenger to access my hotmail emails whereby I right click the little fella in my taskbar to open a little menu, then click on 'E-Mail inbox'.

But, when my inbox opens, it's always a very narrow, very long, very annoying little window which I have to take all the trouble to maximize myself.

I know that with other applications you can choose to run them mazimised by using properties but with messenger when you right click E-Mail inbox, it opens (In a very narrow, very long, very annoying little window).

Ok so it's not really a problem, but it's been going on a year now & enough's enough!

I WILL NOT BE BULLIED BY A 16x16pxls LITTLE MAN TELLING ME I MUST VIEW MY MESSAGES THE WAY HE WANTS ME TO ANYMORE!!!

please?Hey, im not quite sure how to fix this, broni or one of the other mods would probably know cause there computer geniuses but i can try and help . Ok, if its like a tiny 16x16 screen whenever you open up internet explorer then the SETTINGS in internet explorer must have CHANGED somehow. If it only happens with MSN or hotmail then maybe you could try re-installing the MSN client. If that doesn't work then maybe you could try SWITCHING the hotmail inbox settings to either the older view or the newer veiw, if you know what i mean by that. You could also contact the MSN support team through the help section. Well i hope i have helped you, good luck Hi Nibblit

No I think you gave some good practical advice which solved my problem, THANK you.

I removed/reinstalled messenger & it sorted it. It still doesn't open maximized, but this time when I stretched the window to a bigger size, it remembered the next time I opened it.

I still think it's WEIRD how when you open a window & mazimize it, windows remembers your preference & the next time you open that window/application it does open maximized but somehow this doesn't happen with messenger (for me).

I've had to just stretch the window to the size of the screen & then close it & it works.

That's enough... it's boring me now.

Thanks againNo problem , computers can do some strange things sometimes

Solve : Sites coming up slow on 1 network computer, but not email. . possible causes??

Answer»

On the HOME network with cable, the sites take up to a MINUTE to appear and never did before. If she clicks on outlook express, the email updates with no problem. The other computer is fine. I run XP on both. I have cleaned up the cache and temp files with "Cleanup!", done a virus scan with ad AWARE, and have have reset the modem and router and have also redone the network. I'm out of ideas. Is there a way to do a deeper scan to find corrupt or unneeded files? I'm not the best with computers as it GETS more in depth here. I'm always afraid of deleting something I may have needed for windows. Any ideas? The kids have been messing with the computer a little with MSN and their IM, is this related? Thanks for any suggestions. Are you connected via Ethernet CAT5 cable or USB to your Cable Modem?

I've seen the software to communicate from USB to the Broadband Cable Modem get corrupt before and cause problems like this. If USB for cable to modem then you might want to reinstall the CD provided from your ISP and try that.

If Ethernet with CAT5 cable then some other issue. Does everything else run quick except for surfing the web, or is the PC considerably slower?

You can also reset your browser configuration if Internet Explorer 7, by selecting TOOLS from browser, then Internet Options, thenselect the Advanced Tab, then select RESET.

DaveI connect via an ethernet cable. When I try to reset it says Google has blocked an attempt to reset. Should I go ahead and do it anyways. I use yahoo as my homepage. Any other ideas? And also, the connection to Outlook Express is fine, quick as usual. It's when entering a website, it takes 1-2 minutes for each site or page to COME up.Uninstall any addon Toolbars you have including Google.Still the same thing. What should I do next.Quote

When I try to reset
To reset, turn your computer off, disconnect modem from power source, wait 1 minute, reconnect, and restart.I may have another clue to help solve the problem. I ran the kids IM MSN troubleshooter and itt said 2 things. 1. Your DNS appears unable to resolve IP addresses and 2. Improper Proxy or firewall settings. Check DNS and Check Keyports. Is there anything I can do to check these or fix these? I am not that experienced when it gets into these things now so please be specific if possible. To rep: 1 computer on a network was taking up to 2-3 minutes for a web site to come up. Outlook express and email would work normal. The modem was reset, defragged, scanned, emptied all trash, redid network, I think I reset the browser and no changes yet. SO what's next? ThanksAre you using Internet Explorer? I'd like you to try Firefox to see, if same problems exist.Well, my internet was going slow before and i used open DNS (www.opendns.com), a cat6 network cable, and firefox and now it's goin heaps faster. But you have probably got a more complex problem........so yeah good luck

Solve : C:\ Drive not showing in My Computer...?

Answer»

On my DELL 4100 that has been upgraded with a PowerLeap Pent. III Chip and now with an Intel flashed BIOS all on a tree year old MB, the C:\ drive has disappeared in My Computer. The computer is working just fine. But, I have had to do a lot of adjusting as I did a repair of XP PRO about 2 months AGO and getting SP2 to load was a pain. I have tried the MS Forums for a fix, but everyone is baffled. I had the C:\ not even showing in Device Manager, when last night I tried renaming the Drive C:\ and then naming it back. That helped it show in Dev. Mngr.. So, my question is: can I safely unistall the Maxtor Ultra ATA drive from the Disk Management>Properties>Drive>properties? I hoping this will work. Ant other idea would be appreciated.I don't quite understand...where is XP installed to in this configuration ? ?
Is there more than one drive or just seperate partitions here ? ?

XP writes to C: on installation so i think you'll find that if you remove C: you will wind up with a machine that won't boot....Not always C:. Oddly enough, I reinstalled XP onto my computer and it put it on K, after my other partitions and my DVD drives.

Unfortunately, the only way to change the drive letter of the system drive is to reinstall. Windows won't allow you to change from what ever it is to C:, or from C: to something else.

Just one drive C:.

Thanks, Patio, glad I didn't try that.

When I "read" the C: drive in Comp. Management it says it is partitioned, and I can't honestly ever remembering doing a partition. Would "repair XP Pro, off the CD have done that?

The shaded lines extend all the way across the bar for the C: drive display in Comp. Manager, does not show any partitions.

No partitions. C: is there in Comp. Manager, just not in My Comp..

quaxo, glad you mentioned that, not worth the trouble to do a reinstall now.
quaxoAlways C:.

It can still be installed to any partition you LIKE but it will still write to C:.
To test this you can use a utility to temporarily hide the C: partition and re-boot.
It will not load Windows. The other option you have Thomas which may be a good one in case you have a need for some more storage space would be to install a new HDD disconnecting the current one and do a clean install of XP and all your drivers.
You can then power down and hook up the current drive as a slave and use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to migrate your settings.

You will have to install most programs but when you get it set as you like you can then format the current drive and use it for storage.

Other than starting over completely this is not a bad option...Patio, I have a 80 gig Maxtor OneTouch external drive already. I Use Windows LiveOne Care to do backups.
Can I install XP Pro on my external drive then, use that drive (external as a boot drive and the internal Maxtor HD as a slave, then tranfer files back to the slave (internal drive)? Then would I change the slave back to Master drive when done? I am not sure if I'm following then pattern correctly. Is there a MS KB article on this?
Thanks again for your time.Unfortunately no...XP will not install to a external drive...this is by design.
It is POSSIBLE, I've seen people install XP to an SD card and an external USB drive on EeePCs.

Check the Eeeuser.com forums. You should find what you're looking for there.
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewforum.php?id=13

Even though it's a forum for EeePCs, in theory it should work for just about any system.Don't have a Asus MB, have a Intel, does that make a diff.?I'm aware it CAN be done however it's not for the faint of HEART nor for a user who only has one machine for daily tasks...

I've seen and tested at least 1/2 dozen methods from out there on the web and it fails most of the time...when it does succeed it's not exactly the most stable enviornment for an everyday user...

This is why i choose to suggest it not be tried.Quote from: Thomas Bailey on January 19, 2008, 07:55:54 AM

Don't have a Asus MB, have a Intel, does that make a diff.?

I suppose not, if done right. Like I said, it is a forum for the ASUS EeePC, but in theory it should work for most anything.

Most of the mention of the ASUS motherboard and BIOS functions in there can probably be ignored. The EeePC has a weird BIOS, and you have to switch the BIOS to a special mode when installing an OS. Things like that you can ignore. It might take some experimenting, but it's a place to start anyway.Does it support booting to a USB device ? ?
If not this will be an exercise in futility.

Again this is why i normally do not recommend this procedure. Thanks for the idea, but I'll take another path.
peace.

Solve : RAR files?

Answer»

hi,
i have multiple rar files however they were accidentally renamed what do i rename them to so they open as one big file rather than individually.
i have tried to name them r01 r02... and PART1 part2... but it still opens one rar file which i then get an error saying it has an unexpected end.

thanks. Is it only the filenames that have been renamed or also the extensions? Usually the filename is the same for all files and then you've got a .rar file and a number of files called .r01-.r??.
But if the extensions have been changed then the order of the files have been messed up and you will need to put them back in the correct order.
Unfortunately I don't know any other WAY than trial and error. This can be nearly impossible if there's a lot of files. Where did you get those files from? Can you get another copy of them?Deerpark i know the order of the files its just the extentions that have been changed
what can i rename them to?
the filenames are named different e.g filename1.rar filename2.rar
shall i rename them to something like this:
"filename.rar.r01"

Broni, i got the files of a cd and i no longer have the disk.

thanks for your help so far.

The first one in the archive should be filename.rar, then the following ones filename.r01, filename.r02, etc.thanks for your help.

But nothing seems to be working i THINK the files just may be bad.Maybe...but they will only unpack correctly with the original filenames...
And if even one of them is out of order the installation will fail.I've also SOMETIMES seen rar files with extensions that are .001, .002, etc.

I'm sure more people will chime in here, I'll do some search, but you have to go through some readings as well:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Strike+the+F1+key+to+continue%2C+F2+to+run+set+up+utility.I think you'll find it's not "drive Oh" (the letter O, that comes between N and P) but rather "drive 0" (drive zero, the first disk drive on the
system).

I think you will further find that said disk is either well on the way to HDD Heaven, or already GONE there. It asked you to fetch a PRIEST about 2 weeks ago.

Try letting windows repair any damaged or missing system files by ruining this command:
sfc /scannow

You can run it from the task manager by CHOOSING File --> New Task.
You will need your XP install disc.Another thing to try:

In Task Manager, on the File menu, click New Task (Run).
Type:
cmd
Hit ENTER.
Rename the Shdocvw.dll file by typing:
ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old (<----- watch for spaces)
Restart the computer.Isn't this the 3rd or 4th issue this week related to System Mechanic ? ?I don't know why that System Mechanic is so popular?
Is it because they advertise it as some kind of miracle tool?

Solve : BSOd - do not know how to reinstall key components?

Answer»

I have a system 32 blue screen that no matter what I choose - safe MODE, normal, etc, it goes to the blue screen and then shuts down the computer. When I go in to isolate, It TELLS me that I am missing some key xp files.

I am not familiar with XP - I have a cd for xp, but I don't know how to get around the blue screen to run the cd to install the missing files? I do not want to reformat the hard drive, because i have information that was not able to be backed up before the system crashed, and I need the information. Thank you.Welcome aboard

Restart your computer with Windows XP CD in, and it'll give you "Repair" option.Or before choosing the repair option ( i have seen data loss with this method ) go to Start/Run and type sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have the XP CD HANDY as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion and re-boot.
This fix is designed to replace/repair any Windows system files that have gone missing or got corrupted.
If the system is back to normal after that i suggest starting to think about a regular backup strategy...I have the same problem as (ciedercorn) exciept I can not get to start screen. Dell 8400 XP.
PUT THE WINDOWS XP disc in and it runs and then I get a screen that says.

Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery console
The Recovery Console Provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type Exit to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer
C:\>

Have done this and it goes back to what it was doing before. Is there something other than EXIT that I should put in after the C promt.
thanks

Solve : deleting browser history?

Answer»

I work on a public computer
I tried to DELETE my browing HISTORY and cookies and temporary INTERNET files the other day and it wouldnt let me.

I clicked on the buttons but its like frozen...like Im not allowed to delete history etc..

Is there a way around this, an override, a way to delete the stuff??

I dont have ANYTHING that would be a bid deal...just some stuff that PROBABLY is questionable and not work related.

thanksYour screwed!! COL!

You could try CCleaner but,Administrator rights will
probably stop you.public computers are a bit like school computers, everything is blocked and caches e.c.t cant be cleared. It may not even let you install programs. you could use a proxy skipping website. see below

www.skipmyip.com

this hides all record of you and the websites you have been on.

Solve : lose settings on every reboot?

Answer»

Help, Every time I powerdown and reboot, I lose my screen saver settings. It goes back to "none." I have selected, applied and "ok'ed." I know it has to be SOMETHING simple, but I cannot figure out, how to get my computer to keep my screen saver settings. It will keep other display settings (e.g., color). I notice it specifically with the screen saver.Interesting issue. What version of Windows are you running and are you running as the root ACCOUNT or the only account on the computer or is this a computer setup on a NETWORK with limited rights?I am running on windows xp, and I am the root account. I am not on a network. It is really weird. I also have an issue if a non-root acount registers onto a miscellaneous webpage. I cannot as a root account access the webpage when I register. It kicks me back to the login in screen every time. I am thinking they may be related somehow. Is it 3rd party screensaver, or Windows one?SOUNDS as if the Admin account has become corrupted...re-boot into safe MODE and recreate it.
You may as well rebuild the other accounts as well although i usually only do one at a time and re-boot after each to make sure things are running properly.Always make an extra Admin account and keep the password in a safe place. This way if anything ever goes wrong with your login profile, you can easily recover.

Just remember--if you delete an account, you may lose the documents of that user. The "My Documents" folder always points to the documents of the current user. I'd copy them off to another folder on the C: drive.

Also, you can always view the files of other users by navigating under "C:\Documents and Settings".

Good luck!

Solve : PC doesn't recognize internet?

Answer»

Ok my parent's comp has always had issues with viruses and spyware but they have never had issues that affect hardware, I THINK. Basicly their computer no longer recognizes that the ethernet cable is plugged into the computer even when it is. I have tried my own computer through their cords and had internet working fine. In the device manager it says that the ethernet card is working properly. They are using NO32 antivirus suggested by a friend of of a friend, WINDOWS XP pro, 256mb RAM. Any way of knowing if this issue is caused by a VIRUS or a hardware issue or something else. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks. Is it onboard ethernet or a card ? ?
Either way buy a new card and install it...around 15 bucks.
If this produces no joy joy then try another ethernet cable....it's ONE or the other.my computer use to do the same thing... the ethernet cord would connected but still would not show that it is connected. I Think i use to just screw around in my network settings to make it work.... btw i know this doesnt help much but ussaly when i around with settings sometimes.. SOMETIMES.. it would fix my problems...

sorry for this pointless post.Start with the Network Interface Card (NIC)/port's status LEDs. They are located by the ethernet port. What LEDs does it have and what is their state (on/off, green/amber, blinking/steady)?Quote from: dahlarbear on November 04, 2007, 01:41:50 PM

I'll second this 100% I had a card ACTUALLY I bought two of them at the same time for two different computers.. The one worked fine for years and one day I started up my computer and no network! Same thing though, device manager said it was fine, but it was dead... I couldn't figure it out. Stuck another one in there and it worked great. It simply died. It happens. It was a Network Everywhere card, pci... And btw, I decided to fix up that other computer and use it a few days ago and guess what---NO NETWORK... and it's the other card that I had bought when I bought the other one that died. So I'm thinking it crapped out as well. But yeah try another card they're cheap, esp if you look online, you can get one for like $5 on ebay, haha. Also off topic, and not the cause obviously, but 256mb of ram for xp (esp pro) is pretty bad, I would definitely consider upgrading that to 512, it should be almost twice as fast then. Just a suggestion!

JayThanks I'll try that and see if it works. Btw my parrents don't use their computer for anything but online banking, msn messenger, and online backgammon so more RAM isn't going to help them out too much.

Solve : Is there a noticeable difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133??

Answer»

I'm AMAZED at how cheap HARD drives are now. Instead of cleaning up an older HDD to free space, you're better off just plunking down a little cash to get 10 times the disk space in a new HDD for $50-$100.

SATA is very impressive with up to 3.0Gb/sec transfer rates these days. With that kind of SPEED, it makes older ATA-100 and ATA-133 HDD's look like primitive technology. But, if you're just a home user doing periodic backups, it's kind of overkill. At this POINT, I'm still perfectly fine with a 1Gb file taking a few minutes to transfer (instead of a few seconds). Plus, once you start heading out through FireWire and USB ports, the SATA benefit diminishes (the slower device is the equalizing bottleneck).

So, for those of us still mucking around with pre-SATA, I'm wondering... is there an appreciable difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133, assuming the same rotational speed (e.g. 7200rpm)? Or is it so slight as to be negligible?
Google for - ata100 vs ata133 - lots of opinions and info on the WWW

Solve : Volume icon does not show in task bar?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600), and IE 6,SP2.

I did a Windows Repair recently and I see that the volume ICON is missing from the task bar. My sound is working fine. I went to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Clicked on Place Volume Icon in Task Bar and I got this error message: Windows cannot DISPLAY the volume control on the task bar because the Volume Control Program has not been installed. To Install it, Use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. I went to Add/Remove Windows Components and did not see it there.

There are no errors showing in the Device Manager Sound. Video and Game Controllers is there, with no errors shown.

I used my Windows disk and did this: sfc /scannow. That did not help. Do I need to do a clean install of Windows? Ugh

Any errors at all in Device Manager? Any yellow TRIANGLES with exclamation marks in them?It sounds like the sndvol32.exe is corrupt. Have a read here:

I hope this helps.Thank you very much. No, there are no errors at all in Device Manager. I just checked again. I will go to the link this evening when I have more time. Thanks so much again. Right click in an empty spot of the taskbar and make sure that Volume is checked off. But if it's working what do you need that icon there for? go control panel, audio or sound settings. Then select show volume icon on taskbar. Tell me if it worksThank you. I went there and checked it but got message is not installed and to go to Add/Move. But it is not there. I think I will just do a clean install of Windows when I can as too many quirky things are happenng.Quote from: kbm292 on November 06, 2007, 12:23:05 PM

Hmmm, I did the Quote thing. Not sure if I answer before the message or after it.

Well, anyway, I have discovered other kooky things going on. Like somehow I lost Outlook Express and Word Pad. So think I am just going to do a clean install of Windows when I can. Have not done it in along time. Had a little problem as the INSTRUCTIONS on the CD (I had printed them) were not the same during the installation. Do you know where I can find good instructions for a clean install of Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) using my Reinstallation CD for Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, INCLUDING Service Pack 2?

Thanks much.
Nice tutorial here:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.aspThank you very much. Will do the big job soon as I can. Ehh...Just follow on screen instructions, and you'll be fine Famous last words. I will do it this weekend. Thanks again. Night for now.
