Solve : Problem when booting up and entering safe mode.?

Answer»

Hopefully this will all make since:

When i first turn my computer on everything goes fine... Shows the main black screen with all the white letters and crap and then when it finnaly shows that blue windows xp screen, my computer makes a beep noise and then just freezes at that screen. So then i came to the conclusion that maybe i could just re-start my computer, hit F8 and get into the safe mode/safe mode with NETWORKING menu and hit the arrow keys down to the last known good configuration option... so anyway, i hit F8 at start up, brings me to that menu and then BAM! i can't even go up or down with the arrow keys to pick my choice. It just freezes at that screen to...

any suggestions?

seems kind of a stupid/obvious thing, but is your keyboard plugged in?try to switch off.then checked ur keyboard.then start your PC...

if the beep STILL exist try to open ur CPU and push all the staff their(re-fixed) the cards.and try to boot again...

any error message after the hang up??? well of course my keyboard works because i can still enter into my bios/avdance options but i just can't move up or down to goto the "last known good configuration". and i still can't get into my windows, it freesez at the blue windows xp screen still...

oh and btw, this all happened after i shipped my computer from washington to california... but i made sure NOTHING is loose in my computer. any other suggestions?Borrow or buy a PS2 keyboard...everyone should have one.im using a wireless keyboard so that could be this whole god *censored* problem.?.?1?

i hate my self... and i hate UPS, for charging me 70 USD. just to package my tower...

dieokay.... so now that i can succesfully enter into safe mode w/ networking, i did a system restore to a early checkpoint but that still does not fix my problem... when i try to boot up my computer normally it still freezes at the windows xp blue screen thingy.... do i have some f**ked up VIRUS? if so whats a good free virus/spyware remover?
As the machine has been in transport here's a few things to check...
Remove a side panel /case.
Remove and re-seat the following components:
Vid card
RAM sticks
Any other add-on cards

Double check all cable CONNECTIONS including IDE cables, power leads from the PSU to the MBoard, power leads to the front of the case etc.

Double check the CPU/heatsink hold downs.

While in there you could also do some general housekeeping with a can of compresed air. Use a QTip to hold fans in place while blasting so as not to damage them.

As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take ESD precautions.

Power back up and see if this helps...
Let us know.yeah, i left to go buy some compressed hair but can't find it anywhere... i checked ACE hardware and also circuit city. I just moved to newport beach and can't think of any other places.... but once i get that canned air and sweep clean my computer, i'll go through and tighten down everything ... ide cables. ram, vid card, ect ect. okay now this is the gay part.... EVERYTHING WORKS FINE NOW... *censored*Good.

What does gay have to do with it ?LOL

Solve : Laptop Display Problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I've got a strange problem. I accidentally changed my display settings on my laptop so that my laptop screen would no longer be the PRIMARY screen, but instead that whatever i hooked up to my laptop would be the primary screen. But, I am unable to hook up an external monitor to my laptop. So, now the start menu, and icons are all MISSING from my desktop. And to make it worse, whenever I right click and try to access my video card or properties to make things right, the box opens outside my monitor.
Any ideas?
Thanks!Do you have a Windows XP boot disk?

I thought you can override the settings when you boot from a boot disk.1. What happens when you attempt to boot into "Safe MODE"?

2. Do you think you setup a dual-monitor display system? Was this done thru display properties where you have two little monitor windows and you selected the external as the "primary"?

3. Does your current screen have a "task bar" at the bottom? If so, what happens if you move to the task bar, right click, select Toolbars, and click on "Desktop". If this works and adds a desktop toolbar where you can access it, you should be able to work your WAY to display properties and correct.

4. Does the ALT-Tab key combination display your open programs on your current window and allow you to cycle through them with each repetion of ALT-Tab?

5. When you boot the laptop do you see a logo or Power On Self Test (POST) diagnostic messages on your current screen? If not, are you able to reboot and enter CMOS setup on your current screen? If so, there may be a BIOS SETTING to select your POST display. What are the options and what does it currently say?

6. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king... Or not...

Solve : can someone help?!?

Answer»

I'm having a Inspiron 2200. Two DAYS ago I was still able to use my realplayer and winamp, but somehow after I've restarted it, it gives me 2 error messages and they're the follows:

- PIFSve.exe - Unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because MSVCP71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

- SmartBridge Alerts: MotiiveSB.exe - entry point not found.
The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

Plus I can't even install new things, like yahoo and MSN messenger, it'll just tell me that I'm not the Administrator of the computer (even I've log on as one), or it'll SAY something like, "please verify that you have sufficient PRIVILEGES to install system services".

Could someone please help!!!pifsvc.exe is a LiveUpdate Notice Service from Symantec Corporation belonging to LiveUpdate Notice.

motivesb.exe is a process by AT&T which allows a user to submit files to the Internet for support. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference.

You cannot install any software on your Inspiron because your user account does not have administrative privileges. You need to get whoever set up your laptop (or whoever installed those programs) and have him help you.

If your user account doesn't have Adminstrative privileges, then there isn't much troubleshooting that you can do on a problematic computer.Need...more...INFO...gasp

Solve : Moving a Window Upward?

Answer»

Hello,

I know that it's possible to drag a window around by its title bar -- even to the point of moving 99.9% of it off-screen. But I'm trying to find out if it's possible (in XP) to move a window upward even though the title bar and the upper part of the window would be off-screen as a result. Right-clicking the title bar, clicking 'move,' and using the up arrow does, indeed, move it upward, but any movement of the cursor or hitting 'enter' (to try to 'set' it there) just causes the window to jump back fully on-screen (with the title bar visible).

Is what I'm asking even possible ?

Thanks !!

Scott

P.S. I could have included an explanation of why I want to do this, but I thought I'd save that til later (if it's even relevant). Quote from: d8less on November 03, 2007, 04:45:54 PM

I'll plump for a big fat "No".

Hi, contrex

Thanks for the response.

Okay, but when you fall asleep, remember.... you asked for it.

My preferred email client is OE6. When I'm composing an email I'd like to have more of a vertical view of the body of the email. Now, from the title bar down to the beginning of the composition area (where I'm actually typing the email) is over 1/3 of the screen height. (ADDITIONALLY, I have my screen resolution set at 800 x 600, so vertical space is at a premium.)

FWIW, I know Mozilla's Seamonkey' email client has the capability of minimizing the menu, toolbar, address/subject area and formatting bar, making the actual typing area virtually full screen (vertically speaking). (TB does not have this feature, afaik.) But I really don't like SM otherwise. I prefer OE.

But since OE is a very 'no frills' email client, I was trying to think of a way to regain some of the vertical area lost by my screen resolution (which I don't want to change) and menu, toolbar, formatting bar, etc. on the compose screen. Since I can't change anything within the OE compose screen, I wondered if I could move the whole screen upward so that the menu, address/subject area, etc. are out of the way, leaving only the composition area visible. I would then drag the bottom edge of the window down to the taskbar and have a 'poor man's full screen effect.' It would only take a few seconds to do this -- not nearly as long as it took to type up this explanation of why I want to do it -- and would allow me to see more of my email at once (vertically).

Are we bored yet ?

Anyway, as you say, it's likely a big fat "No" that this could be done. But if you or anyone else has any other thoughts, I'd be glad to consider them.

Thanks again !

Scott
Have you tried using a higher resolution? Must you use 800 x 600? What size monitor do you have?

Hi, soybean,

Thanks for the response.

1. I'm afraid I do need the resolution where it is, because I use a shared computer (and it's mostly used by the other person to play Pogo games, which are best viewed at the 800 x 600 resolution).

2. Yeah, I thought of using Notepad or Wordpad, but I was trying first to see if I could figure something out using OE and w/o going into some other program.

I guess I'll just have to learn to live with things as they are (or eventually use Notepad, as you suggest).

Thanks again !

Hi, patio

Yes, I have tried TB but found it kind of glitchy (on my computer, at least). And I tried 4 different versions of it ! And, as I vaguely implied in one of my previous posts, I have tried SeaMonkey, which has the feature I'm after and wasn't as temperamental as TB was for me. (And I don't think TB has the FUNCTION I referred to.) But I find OE to be smoother and more refined, and it's sufficient for my purposes at this time. So I thought I would try to find a 'workaround' for its space LIMITATION. (You'd think moving a window partially off-screen (upward) wouldn't be such a problem for Windows.)

As I mentioned to soybean, I guess I'll just have to learn to live with things as they are.

(I have, btw, tried the Windows Live Mail Desktop beta program. It does have some improvements over OE (like toggle buttons for the preview/reading pane and folder pane) but is still limited in the area of space it takes up (vertically) for writing emails. *sigh*)

Anyway, thanks for the comment. I haven't ruled the Mozilla software out entirely.

Well, as I said, it was my experience on my computer that TB was not always well-behaved. E.g. it would always get hung up 'attaching' whenever I tried to save an email draft that included an emoticon or two. And it would not SEND an email as a result. (The helpful people at the Mozilla forum couldn't resolve the issue, despite the fact that a few other people noted having the same issue.) I never had a problem doing that with OE. Smooth as silk.

Sometimes the status bar in TB would go blank and when I would click on a folder, say my storage folder, it would not show the number of emails it contained. I would have to close TB and reopen it to get the status bar info back. Sometimes I would just lose the cursor when typing an email. It was still ACTIVE, but not visible. Again I would have to close TB and reopen to get it back. (I have found these minor annoyances true in Seamonkey as well -- except for the draft-saving one. That's why I initially switched to SM: because it would not get hung up saving drafts with emoticons. I also switched because people at the SM forum said it used less resources than having FF and TB open at once.)

Anyway, all I meant by 'more refined' in my last post is that in my (albeit limited) experience OE has never given me grief. It has always worked smoothly and I have never had reason to worry about an email being saved, sent, deleted, lost, etc. It's boring to look at, for sure, and functionally limited, but it has what I need for my present email needs.

As for TB, I hope it can continue to develop, even though (from what I understand) Mozilla has let it go in order to concentrate on FF.

Thanks again for all the comments.

Solve : Trouble with Windows starting...?

Answer»

I was playing World of WARCRAFT when suddenly my computer froze. I restarted it.

Then a black screen came up and said,

We are sorry for the inconvienience, but Windows did not start succesfully. A recent software or hardware change may have caused this.

Then I get,

Safe Mode
Safe Mode Networking
Safe Mode COMMAND Prompt

Last Good Configuration (most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

I have tried them all and none of them have worked.
I don't have a boot CD, and totally clueless.

Edit: I'm on another computer.

Were there other boot options that you didn't list? And what happened when you tried them... Did it reboot and cycle back to these same options each time?Windows Version- I believe it's XP Home Edition but I'm not sure..

1. No, I listed all the boot options it showed.
2. Yes, on every single one it would just recycle, whenever it would go to the Windows loading screen, it would flicker BLUE then reboot. Too fast to read.Do you have Windows XP CD, or Recovery CD?blue screen...... screen of death. Do any other members know how to pause the screen of death to read it?Yeah, I think there's a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) being masked by an automatic reboot on system error. I was expecting to see a "Windows Advanced Options Menu" that included the "Disable The Automatic Restart On System Failure" item. If present, selecting that item would stop the automatic reboot hopefully leaving you with BSOD and error message which might lead to a solution. Reference the following text from the attached PDF document:

"#8: Disable automatic restart

When Windows XP encounters a fatal error, the default setting for handling such an error is to automatically reboot the system. If the error occurs while Windows XP is booting, the operating system will become STUCK in a reboot cycle--rebooting over and over instead of starting up normally. In that case, you'll need to disable the option for automatically restarting on system failure.

When Windows XP begins to boot up and you see the message Please select the operating system to start or hear the single beep, press [F8] to DISPLAY the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Then, select the Disable The Automatic Restart On System Failure item and press [Enter]. Now, Windows XP will hang up when it encounters the error and with any luck, it will display a stop message you can use to diagnose the problem."

Solve : Past items in taskbar?

Answer»

Hey guys,

This isn't a problem but I was wondering if there was a way to remove the icons of "Past items" from the task bar menu as I do not use the programs anymore. I have Windows XP Home SP2.

Thanks
Yes there certainly is a way to do that.
Select start and select Run...
TYPE Regedit and press enter
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

Before you do anything else you should backup the key.
Do this by right CLICKING the TrayNotify folder and select Export.
Give your backup a name and save it somewhere you can easily find it again.

After you've made a backup delete the values called IconStreams and PastIconStream from TrayNotify.

Now reboot your computer and you're done.

Thanks for your reply Deerpark but i tried it twice and unfortunately it doesn't work.

I am deleteing these:
Yes those are the values to delete.
This trick wont prevent "new" past items from accumulating, it only clears the current list of past items. But are you saying that your list isn't getting cleared at all?No all of them are still there since I have rebooted, only one icon loads when I start my computer and it's the anti-VIRUS icon.Hmm sounds strange...
Do you have any KIND of software installed that might be protecting the registry from edits?
This would typically be antivirus, antispyware or similar TYPES of software.Yes, I have tried it in safe mode with my anti virus disabled but it still doesn't work DLoad TweakUI for XP...
There will be a section for the Taskbar in there for customising/cleaning.

Warning: This is a very powerful customisation tool from the MS labs. Use it carefully and always back up your registry before applying any serious changes.

Solve : Quicken 2007 screen trouble?

Answer»

I'm running a Dell with:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Plug & Play Monitor on ATI RADEON X 300 SE 128MB Hypermemory card
Norton Anti VIRUS
MSN on DSL connection.
I installed Qicken 2007 Deluxe some time around October 2006. I have been having an ongoing issue with the Quicken (ONLY) display screen loosing some of its content after working with the program. I have been dealing with this intermittent issue since the initial installation. I contacted Intuit customer service in October '06 and one of their techs attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling in a new directory. The issue still persisted after this but I worked around it by clicking where the icons should have been and shutting down and restarting my PC. Restarting the PC is the only way to restore the screen content. I have attached a screen shot of the situation I EXPERIENCE. I can't get the file small enough to attach a good screen shot. This does not HAPPEN every time I use it, but it seems to occur when I run the program for longer periods of time. I contacted Dell recently after another incident thinking it may have been an issue with the video card. The Dell support tech tested my system remotely and said there is are no issues with the PC but the issue didn't occur while I was working with him. I contacted Intuit customer service again on 10-26-07 to again attempt to resolve this. Their tech had me remove my existing installation and install a new version that she provided with a download. I experienced the same issue again shortly after the reinstallation. The unusable image attached occured 10-28-07. I do not have this type of issue with any other programs running on my system. I contacted Intuit support again and received a reply that I should check the version of my software. This is after I described the issue and that I had just reinstalled their software from a download from them a few days prior. Every time I contact them it seems like the support tech is just reading through help screens and trying obvious stuff. At 1hr+ a try I am getting tired of not making any progress on this. Does anyone have any SUGGESTIONS for a solution or some inside info that will get me in contact with a higher level person at Intiut support?

Solve : encrypted files are crashing my system?

Answer»

I'm using xp pro and I'm having trouble with encrypted files. Here's what has happened. I periodically transfer all my emails from outlook express into a folder (I've called 'emails') on my desktop, this folder contains a folder for inbox, outbox and saved emails. I've been doing this a while with no problems. Today I decided to encrypt the folder 'emails' and its subfolders (inbox, outbox and saved) and files (all the emails obviously) still no problem.

then I double clicked on 'emails' and a window opened in which there were three folders inbox, outbox and saved, I double clicked on inbox and the window which opened showed a list of all my inbox emails in green text (to show they're encrypted as you know) then my system locked up completely, I can't shut the window down, I can't get task manager up and if it's already up it does nothing (it freezes as well) and the only way to turn my computer off is to force a shutdown.

If I try to un-encrypt the folder on its own I can do that but if I try to do the subfolders as well it locks up. If open the folder to try and un-encrypt the files individualy then my systen freezes. The thing is I have three email accounts and I encrypted the lot, I can't access them and I can't un-encrypt them, I also encrypted all my word documents and I get the same problem, as soon as I open a window with a few encrypted files in it my computer just freezes. The mouse moves but the windows don't respond or if they do it's only after several minutes and there is another window in its place. Everything else is ok it's just the folders and files I encrypted.

Please help cos my fist is STARTING to hurt from where I keep hitting things grrrrrr!Ok so this problem has been annoying me for most of the day but I have managed to get round it for now. I guess THAT'S why they INVENTED safe mode. I've managed to un-encrypt all the files and folders so no mre crashes. Still leaves me with the problem of what was causing it if I ever want/need to encrypt in the future.
Oh well1 I might be back than>GOOD to hear you found a WORKAROUND...
A search if the Microsoft KB didn't turn up much.
For a workaround you could use WinZip or 7Zip to zip the folder and then password protect it. Make sure you write down the password somewhere in a safe place just in case.

p.s. When was the last time you ran dskchk /R and defrag on that HDD ? ?Thanx for the suggestion I'll give it a go.

The problem I was trying to solve originally is this: I have 2 hard drives on my machine one of them has a primary partition C: and slave partition E:. The other drive has slave partitions D: and F:

What I want to do is log on my machine as administrator, put some files (namely my porn collection lol... only joking, theres quite a lot of sensitive business information... ok and some porn too!) onto a drive, log out of administrator and log into a guest account.

If I have put the files on C: then the guest account can't access the files, because admin desktop is set to private, but if I put these files on any other drive then the guest account can access them. As my young daughter will be using the guest account I need to make sure she can't access anything she shouldn't.

So the answer is to use drive C:, Yes but I want to keep C: for system files only then I can create logical drives for everything else.

So how do I prevent anyone but the administrator accessing a drive.

To be clear (I hope) I want to create 'logical drive' F:, call it 'business' and put all my business stuff on there. Create a 'logical drive' G:, call it 'pictures' and put all my pictures on there. Create a... you get the idea. But I want to set up my machine so that only the administrator can gain access to these drives and no other accounts.

Is this possible and if so how is it done.

The easiest way would be to burn the 2 collections of data seperately and copy them to the partitions you desire and then delete them from the C: partition...
This way you won't have to fool around with stopping and re-setting permissions etc...

Thanks dahlarbear for all the input & ideas, but it must be the motherboard on this IBM. Not worth replacing it. TIME to scrap it out and move on. I could never get it past the mgf. logo and the only beep I could get out of it was the missing memory code.

TONY Many thanks for the URL Tony.
Have just downloaded so we'll see how chirpy I am in a few minutes. If the PROBLEM continues, it MAY be a problem with a virus, adware, spyware, or some sort of disk error.

In that case, please PROVIDE the following information:
What antivirus scanner do you have?
What sort of adware/spyware scanner do you have?
When was the last time you ran those on your computer? When were they last updated? (The last time you did an actual scan)

Have you seen any blue screen of death errors recently?

Once we accomplish these questions, if they fail, we will move ONTO the possibility of a disk error, and we will cover the steps of scandisk...

Solve : Installing a new Operating System?

Answer»

Windows is not working so the best method is as said above to remove the drive and hook it up in a working machine as a slave drive...a laptop is no help in this situation. The best way to retrieve you data to your friend's laptop is to buy a cable for about $20 which will allow you to hook your HDD to your friend's laptop and transfer your pictures. Hopefully your harddrive is still functioning because we haven't established the REASON why your computer is not working. Just google HDD to USB cable.I will definitely try your advice. Why would me hard drive be fried? I am assuming I cannot open my pictures because my Windows XP is not authentic. Why I don't know but with the new Windows XP I bought this shoulsd fix that. i just don't want to lose the pictures. How can I transfer programs and their contents without being able to open them?Quote from: momma on October 23, 2007, 01:32:11 PM

I have an invalid copy of Windows XP on my other computer that I use for a sound studio and it's running perfectly. As far as I know an invalid copy of Windows just means you cannot take advantage of all the MS products like updates, etc. It should keep operating. That's why I said something could be amiss with your HDD. You don't need to open the pictures in order to save them. They're just files. If you connect your HDD to a laptop using this cable aforementioned it should treat your HDD as just another storage device.will your computer let you create a network. Check the computer to see if it has a network card ion it. If it doesnt they are realitvley cheap. (bout $10), and GRAB a cross-over network cable and connect the computer and the laptop together. Then share a file from the laptop over the network, and connect to the shared file through my network places. Then copy all of the files you want over the network.Quote from: momma on October 23, 2007, 08:45:29 AM
Thank you all for your help. Unfortunatley I do not know someone who can help that is why I am here.
....

This is what I was waiting for, after my FIRST comment, - to see if you felt it was possible. Either equipment/friend-wise, or skill/ability-wise.

If you feel you cannot use the method I described, then you should give careful consideration to the value of the data. In other words, just how important are those pictures to you? There is no way for anyone here to answer that question.

If you really, really, need to save them - then you should consider a computer repair shop. This means spending some money, of course.
That's what you have to weigh against the value of those pictures.

A computer repair shop would have another machine in which they could slave your drive, as I very briefly outlined. They could simply copy your stuff and burn it to CD for you. I can't imagine that they would charge you an arm and a leg for an easy job like that.
This applies only if the whole problem is simply accessing the data, as you've said.

If however, there is something wrong with your drive, or with your data somehow - as in corrupted - then you have a whole 'nuther kettle o' fish.

Is there a computer repair shop anywhere within reasonable driving distance?

Thank you all for your help. Unfortunatley I do not know someone who can help that is why I am here. Are you all saying I will lose the pictures if I just load the new Windows XP CD. Is there anyway to load them on my friend's laptop? A way that is real easy--especailly since I can no longer open them. Thanks again.

I just thought of another idea to kick around. Unfortunately, it too will cost you some money - but the money is not a complete loss.

Buy another hard drive.
Remove your old one.
Install the new one.

Install Windows XP. ( You did say you bought a new, LEGIT copy, right? full retail installation version, right? )

Get your computer working 100% with the new drive, and new install of WinXP.

Now install your old hard drive as a slave.... and so on, as I outlined at first.

Hey... it ain't free.... you'd be buying a new hard drive.
But, after the job is DONE, you'd still have the hard drive to use, and we could all use more storage space.

This is just another option to consider. Thought I'd mention it.

Solve : Sites not adding to Favorites?

Answer»

I am finding that when I opt to save some sites to Favorites, they are not winding up there BUT, if at some point later I forget that I "supposedly" SAVED that SITE, I try to save it again and am told that it already exists and do I want to overwrite it. What's GOING on?I'm assuming you're using Internet EXPLORER, if so is this version 6 or 7?
Also assuming this is Windows XP?
Do you have multiple accounts on this computer?
Are you running McAfee virus scanner?
Hmm. Unfortunately the only thing I was able to find that was close to this issue was related to issues with the McAfee virus scanner. It may be possible that some other program that you've installed that helps manage your favorites or shortcuts is causing your issues. If you've installed anything LIKE this you may want to try uninstalling that program or look for updates.

Appart from that my only other recommendation would be to update to Internet Explorer 7, which you can get by visiting and getting the updates from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.comhave a look in this folder to see if they are there:

c:\Documents and settings\your user\favourites

replace the underlined with your user name

If not, Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup.exe, and then click OK.I don't have that on any of my 3 XP's except my very old laptop

When GO to Run and type ntbackup.exe and PRESS Enter, it says the file COULD not be found If it's missing Here it is...
Not for those running "ahem" versions of XP.

Solve : My PC does not restart when restart pressed. Cold boot OK?

Answer»

I have a HP pavilion M7590 PC.
I have contacted their support and have been told to recover windows.
My problem is that the PC boots from startup FINE everytime and shutsdown OK everytime.
However if I RESTART it shutsdown then hangs on the Bios HP screen ie the screen (press F1 or esc or recovery drive). THe hard drive lights solildy for a while then goes out and a clicking can be heard.
I have tested all the hardware/ memory/ processors everything passes.
If i press the power button and hold the PC turns off and when power button pressed again reboots no problem.
I know I should just NEVER use restart just the turn off button, but I would like to make my PC better.
I did a windows scan and it asked for them to be replaced but I have a recovery drive not a CD and there was no option to point it to there. Although it did sat it could be because it was a different type of windows.
I have Win XP Media Centre.
I have searched everywhere and it appears I am the only one with this issue
Hopefully somebody knows. You say"THe hard drive lights solildy for a while then goes out and a clicking can be heard".

You need to test your hard drive with the manufacturers software.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287I have run the seagate scan and the drive passed the long test.

I was CONSIDERING reloading the bios again?
Can anyone tell me why it hangs on a reboot ie whrn I press the restart button and not on a cold start.
It does try to read the drive, I can hear it whining but then it stops.
Could it be just a windows file missing?

Solve : Odd noise + low frame rate problem?

Answer»

Here's what happens: I am playing a GAME. Let's say 20 FPS are produced. Then a high pitched noise begins (I don't really know from where, this is a lap top) and the FPS drop to like, 25-50% of what it should be, so 5 or 10 FPS. This makes programs very very slow. The noise and its effects randomly come and go. As soon as the noise ENDS, the frame rate improves again.

I don't know if it's strictly a rendering issue or a general speed one, but I only notice the effects when that heavy rendering is in effect. I'm guessing that even when the noise is in effect and harming rendering speed, other programs go just as fast as they ever did.

I wish I could tell you more, but I don't know what the problem is here. I really would like to toss the computer out of a window and get a GOOD computer, but I can't really do that... Is it just any random game or only a certain game?Possibly an overheating problemOna laptop there is a setting in the boot menu that changes the way it deals with overheating (if this is the problem). I believe the options are performance and silent modes. Performance leaves your CPU at 100% and turns on the fan. Silent slows the CPU down and does not turn on the fan. Maybe you're in silent mode and it slows the CPU.Hmm, possibly, but there is no setting for it in the BIOS. It's a Compaq 905...is there any way I can check or change the setting? I would rather it crashed than throttled itself.

CPU Z confirms the speed of the processor is the same before, during, after the noise occurs. It's just...like...random.

For some reason I suspect USB is involved, because I have heard similar noise when the USB devices are used. I have learned some strange things.

I removed my USB internet adapter, and guess what? The noise stopped immediately! The computer works flawlessly...as LONG as it's not connected to the internet! I'm not sure if it's overheating or the cord is problematic, or what. I read some dells have a noise issue with bluetooth being disabled to save power, and I was able to turn off the "disable to save power" option for the USB root hubs. Just to be sure, I have plugged the adapter in directly (doesn't really fit). The noise still continues when data is transferred occasionally, but this is more of a performance query than a noise one. Just as long as THE noise, and not a similar USB sourced one goes, I am happy as I could be.

Honestly I don't know if I have it figured out, depends on if the noise/"processing interrupts" CONTINUE while online. I would rather have a PCMCIA adapter, but I bought one and it's like...25% as fast as the USB one. Ehh.

Strange problem, eh? I was just about to go reinstalling graphics drivers in desperation...

Solve : computer shut down after POST?

Answer»

Hi, I have a computer that I built two years ago; I am running WinXP on it. The Mother board is an 865PE-TAG Socket 775 ATX. CPU is an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 54OJ (3.20GHz) with Hyper-Threading Technology. I’m not sure if all this info is needed but I just wanted all of you to know in case it helps with my problem.

Anyway, the other day I was testing a HDD from another PC to my PC. I connected the HDD to my IDA, and set it up as a secondary. After the troubleshooting was done, I connected everything back together. Then turned on my PC , the computer kept shutting down and then noticed I mistakenly disconnect the four pin processor fan cable connector to the motherboard 4-pin CPU fan header while I was inside the case troubleshooting the other HDD . After connecting CPU fan, I booted up the computer and noticed before POST the (Inside Pentium 4) splash screen logo on monitor appeared never appeared there before;
The computer loaded all the way. At that time I thought everything was alright, then I clicked an icon on the deck top and the PC just shut down. Sometimes it just starts then loads then shuts down, or just shut down right away. I went into CMOS and checked the PC Health Status and made sure the (Shutdown Temperature) was set the same as before (60c/140F), and it was; and checked the (Fan Temperatures) (30C/86F) and that was the same settings I always had. Checked the (Advanced Bios Features), the boot sequence was correct (HDD-first boot device, which is connect on a Serial ATA. Checked both CD-ROMS – second boot device and THIRD boot device. I tried to isolate the problem by disconnecting the firewire CARD, then disconnecting the IDE cables for CD-ROMS one at a time, took out Ram and replaced it; I tried everything that I could think of still nothing. Everything else is on board except the Video card and firewire card.
I took out the CMOS battery went into CMOS and set the time and DATE back. Booted PC still shuts down.
Cannot get into SAFE Mode, tried repeatedly tapping the F8 key during the boot process nothing. Computer is still perfectly stable when in post. POST MEMORY count is showing I do get error messages when boot normally, but they flash on then off real fast, I don’t have time to read them. I try to hit the (Pause Break) to freeze the screen but no luck.
I was also considering it could possibly be the (PSU). I could use a multimeter, to test it but that’s not even guaranteed if the Voltage falls within the appropriate range, the PSU can still cause problems, so I read. Do you think the ( PSU) could possibility be the cause?

And last, I am getting one beep, which tells me computer passes the POST

Can anyone with good experience please help me
thanks

Solve : Windows XP Not Installed Properly?

Answer»

Hi,
I need some ones help. Everytime I turn my computer on it acts like it is going to start up right but don't. It shuts itself down everytime it gets to the Windows XP Screen. It just keeps recycling.
I have tried F8 and it takes me to the Safemode Screen, everytime I try one of themit goes back to the start mode.
My Windows XP is not installed right and I beleive this is why it is doing it. How can I get my computer up and running long enough to get the Windows XP installed right?
I didn't have this problem until I installed a new cd burner to my computer.
Please HelpRemove the burner.
How is the burner hooked up ? ?
There 's something Windows doesn't like about it.I had the main drive as master and the new drive as slave.
But I UNHOOKED the new one and it still isn't working. When I try to start safe mode it goes through some of Windows that is installed then it stops and starts to reboot itself. Before someone suggests that Windows XP Reinstall is needed:

Did you change any options in the BIOS when you installed the new CD drive?

Instead of using Safe Mode, try Last Known Good Configuration with the drive removed.
Maybe, while installing new drive, you moved something....reconnect cables, RESEAT video card, RAM, any card you have inside. If you're still having the problem after following Zylstra's advice:

"Instead of using Safe Mode, try Last Known Good Configuration with the drive removed"

then from the "Windows Advanced Options Menu"; if the following ITEM is listed, select it. It should stop the automatic RESTART and probably show a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with an error message. Copy the entire message in it's entirety, post it here, or search internet for SOLUTION.

Disable The Automatic Restart On System Failure

The above Advanced Option menu item should appear for a Windows XP SP2 installation. I'm not sure if it appears on Windows XP orginal, or SP1 installation.

Solve : unwanted visitors?

Answer»

I have a 12-year-old son who is easily influenced by some of his peers, PARTICULARLY when a group of them are in front of this computer. They are doing things on here and going to sites which I can't control when neither his mother nor I are home. I keep telling him not to let them boss him around on the computer but I fear he thinks he'll lose them as friends if he doesn't let them do what they want, as only a couple of them have computers at home.

My question is whether there is a way to have a password needed to access the computer when it starts up? Or at least one needed to access the internet? I know about restricted zones in the security portion of my windows xp format, but I'm looking for something even a bit more secure if possible. I don't want to totally restrict him from the computer but some temporary punishment shouldn't hurt I wouldn't think.

As mentioned before, I am running Windows xp and using Mozilla Firefox as my browser. And if possible I'm looking for a free solution.

Thanks in advance. If you want a password to log in, create him a new user account by going to Control Panel - User Accounts.
Set a password, and make it a user account, rather than Administrator or anything else.
Be aware however that this only restricts him logging in, if the other account(s) has/have no passwords he can log in to those easily enough.
Alternatively, set a password on boot, by entering the BIOS (hit delete, F10, F2 or something else whilst the PC is booting, the key to press is usually displayed on screen).
The head over to a section named Security or SIMILAR, and set a boot or system password.
Save the changes and exit.
This way, every time the computer is turned on, a password is needed before it will go any further.

To solve the problems of unsuitable activities and sites, I would suggest some form of parental control software, and a stern talking-to.
I'm not too sure what's good and what's not in the software zone right now, hopefully someone else will be able to GIVE you a hand with it.Thank you Calum for the quick response first of all. I did in fact enter BIOS by hitting "delete" and PROCEEDED over to "boot" and in turn in a sub menu, "Security".....it is then when I ran into a problem. I created and saved a "supervisor" password, but all that did was make me put in the password the next time I entered BIOS.....otherwise I was able to proceed to the account page and carry on as usual.

One thing I did notice though while in the security section was a drop down menu with "full access, limited, no access, view only"....as well as
user password creation and clearing options which left me totally in the dark. Can you or anyone help me with my next step so whenever anyone turns on the computer they will need a password to go further? I don't know that much OBVIOUSLY about computers, especially the above list I mentioned with full access, no access, limited and view only.

thanks again in advanceDo you have an option to choose something other than Supervisor password?
It may be known as a system, boot, power, or power on password.
If in doubt, take a picture, and show us.ok...under boot settings it goes:

Boot Settings

- Boot Device Priority
- CDROM Drives
-Boot Settings Configuration
- Security

under Security Settings it goes:

Security Settings

Supervisor Password: Not Installed
User Password: Not Installed
Change Supervisor Password
Boot Sector Virus Protection [Enabled]
(these bottom two options are the only ones you can click on)

Once you click on Change Supervisor Password and then enter and confirm a password, it goes:

Super Password : Installed
User Password : Not Installed
and then beneath that,,,,,

Change Supervisor Password
User Access Level [Full Access]
Change User Password
Clear User Password
Password Check [Setup]
Boot Sector Visur Protection
,,,,you're allowd to click on these 6 lines.......If you press enter on the User Access Level line, the [Full Access] opens to four choices 1- Full Access 2-No Access 3-Limited and 4- View Only

hope this helpsWhere it says: Password Check [Setup]
Hit Enter on it.
Change it to Boot, power on, something like that.
If you're not sure, tell us what you can choose after you hit enter. Are we sure here that we want to set a BIOS level password where it can be done within Windows instead ? ?

Just checking.what about a firewall. you can block websites through that with a password. I dont know if firefox has a restricted page section. perhaps anothermember could help with thisthank you.Quote from: patio on October 25, 2007, 03:20:01 PM

Are we sure here that we want to set a BIOS level password where it can be done within Windows instead ? ?

Just checking.
I was going for a BIOS rather than Windows password as it's usually simpler to set.
With a Windows password/user accounts, it's still possible to log in under different accounts if they have weak or no passwords.
I felt a BIOS password would offer more security, as someone who knew the password would absolutely have to be there for the PC to boot.

Note: do not forget this password, or you're in trouble.

Can someone please help me. I am fairly good on computers but I don't have any idea where to start with this. My wife's laptop has worked fine for two years. She was using it one DAY like she normally does and then TURNED it off without any problems. The next day she went to start it and it will not do anything.

It's running off of an AC cord and the power light comes on when you press the power key to start it up. From there it doesn't make any sounds and the screen does not come up with anything. Also the disc drive won't open, kinda like it's not getting power but the power light is on.

Any advise?I guess it would help you all if I told you what kind of computer it was. It's a Compaq Evo N800c running Windows XP. SORRY about that.Sounds to me like the motherboard took a dump.

Do you have an extended warranty on it? If so take ADVANTAGE of it. If not start looking for another laptop for you wife.

A couple of options...pull the hard drive & battery out and see if it boots. A last resort is to remove the CMOS battery. Both will probably be fruitless but at least give it a try.

Wish there was better news for you.

I know you say the laptop power LED is LIT but:

1. To eliminate the battery as the problem, disconnect and remove it from the laptop; then attempt to boot using the AC/DC converter power cord.

2. Also if you have a voltmeter you could test to see that the proper DC voltage is being supplied by the AC/DC converter power cord. Sometimes these power cords go bad.

Is it the original power cord for the laptop with the proper voltage/amperage rating?

Can you clarify what the symptoms are? If the system hangs (locks up), I don't understand how you can log off. Is the computer LOCKING up (no response to user inputs) or is it just one program that hangs (and can be killed)?

Is this a recent problem? Did it start after you added more memory? Did it start after a hardware or software change?use one ram at a time and see.Quote from: only_lonely on October 26, 2007, 01:01:59 AM

This was stated above... 1. I believe "hang" could be caused by:

o Heat
o Bad Hardware
- Memory
- Old hard drive
- Motherboard?
o Software
- Application
- Operating System
- Driver

2. Overheating. Clean dust out of case, heatsinks, motherboard, case vents, fan blades, etc... Check to ensure all fans are working. Perhaps find software that displays temperature values of motherboard, disk drive temperatures.

3. Bad Hardware. Check the memory. Can run one module at a time. Don't forget memory slot could be bad. Use stand ALONE software to test. I recommend software:

www.memtest86.com

Should be abe to find software to view the Self Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology (SMART) values on your hard drive. Find manufacturer diagnostic utilities for your hard drive and run them. Defrag the file systems. Wouldn't hurt to use "chkdsk" to verify integrity of the file system and perhaps hard disk surface.

4. Software. You could try running in "Safe Mode" to eliminate most of the software as a potential problem and see if problem reoccurs. If the problem does not reoccur, I'd suspect your third party device drivers

You could run "sfc" utility to check integrity of your system files, but fresh install probably took care of that.

Memtest86 is a self-contained system that boots from floppy or CD. If you run MemTest86 and system hangs, you know it's not a software problem because this software is independent of what you were running.

If it runs clean without hanging then it's probably not a heating problem, because the test exercises your system continuously until you hit "Escape" key to exit.

You could also run from a bootable Linux distro to eliminate your software as the problem.

Solve : MS XP Installer?

Answer» HI All,
I had a old program that I wanted to remove from my XP machine..SP2. I ran the add/remove tool and it got RID of most of it. Than I found a folder in the program files folder of the old software. Thinking that I didn't need that any more I deleted it. Now every few mins I get the MS installer poping up to run the install for the prgram that is no longer there. It crashes and after clicking ok it starts to install it again.

I found a tool on MS web site called MSICUU2.exe which is a installer cleaner.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

The problem is that when you run it you get a list of programs to clean...all MS programs and the one I want is not listed. I can't stop the installer from starting.

I am stuck in a loop with the installer poping up crashing...starting up again....etc...

Any ideas?

THANKS
what is the program that you ininstalled in the first place?System Restore? At the bottom of the page you got the tool are the troubleshooting guides.Hi All,
Thanks for the reply!

The trouble shooting at the bottom of the page is no help. The problem is that the cleanup tool does not list the program I am trying to clean. In a nutshell the cleanup tool is of no use. I have used a few quick downloads to clean/fix the REGISTRY with no luck also. I need to know where the program is starting from to kill it. Or find a fix for this.

The program is called Proshots Studio version 6.

Thanks again!
TweakUI for XP

Warning : This is a powerful tool. Make proper backups of the registry before making anything other than cosmetic changes. Thanks for the link...I have used tweakui before. Good idea...

I will let you know how it works out..

You're more than Welcome...Another idea to try is to reinstall that program, and try to uninstall again (not DELETING anything)I would like to do the reinstall...but I don't have the software anymore.

Oh well...its an old program.

Thanks!

Solve : Help.. Windows not rebooting..?

Answer»

Ok, so I was playing World of warcraft on my computer, and all of a sudden my computer froze. So, I restarted and then when Windows would start loading, it would flash to a blue screen, then back to a black screen with these options:

Sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows could not start successfully, a recent hardware or software change MAY have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpecdly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and FOLDERS and folders choose Last Known Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attemp was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose start windows normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode Networking
Safe Mode Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

None of them work, so I do Last Known configuration and press F8. None of those work. So I do disable automatic restart at system failure.

So, I can read the blue screen, which says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps;

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or BACKUP utilities, check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I tried everything but nothing worked.
HelpThis is from a heavily fragmented HDD. Were you able to run chkdsk /r as suggested ? ?
You may want to DLoad and run the HDD manuf. diagnostics on that drive as well available free at the manuf. website. No, I can't do ANYTHING. When windows starts loading it doesn't load. It goes to the blue screen and back to the black screen. I ALSO can't run anything, because I can't get into my computer, only 3 screens are showing during the reboot process, the blue screen, black screen, and windows loading screen. Then after that, it restarts. You will need a Windows XP CD to run the Recovery Console and try and rescue things...
It needs to be the same version and Service Pack that you have.If you don't have a Windows XP Setup CD but have a floppy drive, you can use the Windows XP Setup boot disks (six floppy disk set). This assumes you have access to the internet and a working Windows PC with floppy drive to CREATE the six floppy set. Either method will give you access to the Window XP Recovery Console.

Within the first link there are separate sublinks for each version of Windows XP; original, SP1, SP2. The second link describes how to boot into Recovery Console.

Solve : Computer starts slowly and weird!?

For the past two days, when I turned on my computer, the monitor showed a black screen with SHORT white bars at the bottom. The computer makes SOUNDS like it is on. The monitor light is on. The screen is all black except for the bars at the bottom. After a few minutes like this, the white bars all become one, from left to right...then it turns on. This takes quite a while. What is happening here? What should I do? Please help!! THANK you!!!check your hardware if there properly installed or maybe its a virus or maybe I am just an idoit. Hahaha...I doubt you're an idiot!!...and the hardware is wired properly...so I'm guessing virus?...eek. Don't know where to begin with that one!Hey sUP gurl What happened before this started?
What changes did you make, etc?
What OS are you using?
Does the PC work OK once it's actually on?
And what protection do you have?

Finally, welcome to the forums, Radiogirl.Hi...here are answers to your questions...

What happened before this started? Nothing..everything was normal
What changes did you make, etc? No changes have been MADE whatsoever
What OS are you using? Windows XP
Does the PC work OK once it's actually on? Yes...maybe I shouldn't turn it off?
And what protection do you have? PCSafe Adware

Finally, welcome to the forums, Radiogirl....THANKS!!! it sounds like you are safe with your protection and software. Try updating your anti-virus. the hard drive could also be going bad, or it could be your monitor. when you turn it on and the screen eventually comes on, at which point of bootup is the computer at. If it is at the windows screen it could be a problem with the monitorPat,

Hmmm...good question. I'm not sure what stage it is at when it finally comes on. I believe it is at the Windows XP screen. What would that mean?

Solve : Error: File System is damaged. HELP!??

Answer»

Hello all,

Hopefully someone can aid me in resolving this issue ASAP. Basically O&O Defrag (v10) continues to tell me that my main drive (a 320GB Hitachi SATA HDD) has a damaged file system after every CHKDSK. Over the past several days I have run every CHKDSK SCAN/repair that I could manage (e.g. CHKDSK /P /R from Recovery Console, A "Fix file system and repair bad SECTORS" scan from the "Disk" tools in Windows, etc...), yet I am always greeted with the same problem. Error: File system is damaged. I have even gone so far as to rebuild the MBR and the Boot sector to no avail. I am guessing the problem lies in the MFT (although I am not an expert), because after rebuilding the MBR, a large cluster of data (Approximately 50 GB) that was once labeled as Reserved for the $MFT in O&O disappeared, magically freeing up said 50 GB from used HDD space. Any help would be greatly appreciated for I do not wish to do what seems to inevitably be my only option... reformat.

Thanks.

(Also, as of last night Copy and Paste functionality was not working, if that helps with the diagnosis.)Download the Hard Drive diagnostics (or Drive Fitness Test) from here.

Create a Bootable CD and then boot from it.
It could be ready to fail.

These instructions where originally from patio. If that dows not work, the only option may be reformat, and do a clean install of windows. Thanks for the help guys. Kinda goofed tho, was actually a Western Digital to my surprise, I had assumed it was the Hitachi drive... go figure. Anyway, I placed my advanced replacement order today with WD.

Although I was wondering, what would be the best way to copy my old data to the new drive? Would just copying from Windows on the new drive cause any data to become corrupt, possibly as it is reading the data. I ask because a zip file I had downloaded the night before showed as empty yesterday as well as temporary file folders (for installing new programs, gave me an error that the temp FOLDER the exe had copy files to for the install was not present no less then immediately after the setup copied them). Thanks again.Quote from: M1RAG3 on October 24, 2007, 05:16:06 PM

Thanks for the help guys. Kinda goofed tho, was actually a Western Digital to my surprise, I had assumed it was the Hitachi drive... go figure. Anyway, I placed my advanced replacement order today with WD.

Did you ever find and run the Western Digital diagnostics against the disk to check the integrity of the drive and its disk surfaces?
Yes I was able to DL the WD Diagnostics tool. I ran the full scan (e.g. the Quick test and the Full Media test) and both did not report any errors.

So now my question is this:

As I stated earlier my plan is to install a new copy of XP onto the replacement drive which is on its way.

My question is that if I attempt to recover (a.k.a. copy) my files from the corrupted/damaged disk (which just to refresh is being caused by a "damaged filesystem") in doing so would I cause further data loss? Basically by accessing the files from the NEW Windows installation (new drive) that are on the old drive, would the bad filesystem corrupt or damage the data as I am copying it?If you boot to a new operating system on a new disk it should not cause additional damage to the old disk (file system) as long as you're only reading from the old disk. Do not attempt any write operations to the old disk.

The new operating system must be capable of reading the file system of the old disk (e.g. FAT, FAT32, NTFS).Ok cool, so as long as I only copy stuff everything should be OK? Cause I am just worried that when I get the new drive and get Windows up and running if I try to access all my old data, in doing so it would become corrupt.

Solve : HTTPS-SSL?????

Answer»

I have a NEW program called Replay Media Catcher and when I try to open it I GET the message:

_______________________________________ ________________________

Unable to connect to the internet!
You must be able to connect to the internet (via HTTPS-SSL) in order to run this program.
Make sure "MediaCatcher.exe" is not blocked by your firewall.

Error returned:
Unable to connect to the server

_______________________________________ ________________________

I am totally confused as to what to do any suggestions? What type of firewall are you running ??
The error message kinda said it all.Open TCP port 443 on your firewall. Allowing firewall to pass HTTPS protocol is the same thing.

Most web traffic is transmited in plain text using Hyper Text TRANSFER Protocol (HTTP) thru TCP port 80 (the default port). Most secure web traffic is transmited as encrypted text using HTTP over Secure Sockets Layer protocol (HTTPS) thru TCP port 443 (the default port). From the message reported by the user it appears the firewall is blocking his traffic.

The user may:

o Drop his firewall, allowing all traffic thru (come on in... everyone's welcome)

o Allow firewall to permit all traffic to/from his application, MediaCatcher (It's OK, I'm a friend of MediaCatcher...)

o Allow firewall to pass all HTTPS traffic; open TCP port 443 (We allow secure web traffic for everyone...)

o Allow firewall to pass 443 traffic only for his application, MediaCatcher

If you tell us which firewall (and version) you're using, maybe someone with that firewall could tell you how to configure it to open TCP port 443.
let us know how you go with thatQuote from: programming_pat on October 24, 2007, 11:07:34 PM

let us know how you go with that

PP, why did you bother posting that?
Quote
Open TCP port 443 on your firewall.
I'm personally against opening any firewall ports manually, because of SECURITY reasons.
When firewall opens a port in order for some program (game) to run, it'll close that port, as soon as you shut down that program.
When you open any port manually, it'll remain open (until you manually close it), which exposes your computer to some extra risk.

If a program is written correctly, it should communicate with firewall, asking it to open certain port.
If that doesn't happen, simply don't use that program.

Quote
You must be able to connect to the internet (via HTTPS-SSL)
You may check your security settings in IE.
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab, scroll down to "Security" section, and make sure, you have a checkmark in:
- Use SSL 3.0
- Use TSL 1.0

Try to boot as another user (create one, if you don't have one), adjust your settings to your LIKE, restart, and see if settings will hold.
Your user MIGHT have been corrupted somehow. I would try creating another user (with ADMIN privileges of course) and see if that will let you edit settings, change sound volume, etc.

Click on "BellSouth.net". Then, holding SHIFT key, click on "SavedLegacySettings". All 5 keys should be highlighted now.
Click File>Export. Save those 5 keys as "Connections.reg" in KNOWN to you location.
Now, right click on any of those highlighted keys, and click "Delete".
Confirm.
Close all windows.
Restart.

Solve : No Audio Device, please help.?

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE, i have a 2002 windows XP HOME edition, the sound card is a soundMAX integrated digital audio. Last week all of the sudden the sound stopped working, headphones don't even work. I can still HEAR system sounds. When i go to the control panel and look at the sound settings everything is greyed out and says "no audio device". So i go and look at my hardware and the devices and it says everything is working properly. I've been searching forums all over the place and can't seem to find a solution. I've re-installed the devices, got new ones, tried all these different things, but still, no audio device. Troubleshooting won't even help me, please help it would be greatly appreciated. Have you tried system restore?I assume, in Device Manager, under "Sound, Video And Game Controllers", you have listed:
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
Does it have a yellow exclamation mark NEXT to it?your sound card could have died. It happens as hardware only lasts for an amount of time before the SOLDERING wears out.

ok.have you checked all of the cablesinside the computer. Also how old is the hdd?Quote

ok.have you checked all of the cablesinside the computer.

No cabling for the HDD ...it's a laptop.

Do you have a Sony recovery CD for that machine ? ?
It will wipe all your data and restore the machine to Day One status...
If this isn't the choice you want post back with more info.1. "dairyman" POINTED you in the right direction, but we don't know which direction you took or how far you went. What didn't work? What did you try?

2. The Microsoft article, 321626, lists the following causes:

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
•The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
•The hard disk is damaged.
•Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed Master Boot Record (MBR).

Note Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
•An incompatible partition is marked as Active.
•A partition that contains the MBR is no longer active.

3. You told US:

It looks like your BIOS does NOT see your hard drive but it does see your CD-ROM drive.

4. You need to focus first on:

•The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.

and possibly:
•The hard disk is damaged.

You won't be able to access the drive until the BIOS lists and recognizes the hard disk.

5. How does the hard drive attach to the laptop? You need to ensure its power and data connections are secure and/or possibly reseat them.

With newer drives you normally set the BIOS to auto detect the correct configuration of the drive. If you set it wrong, you'll corrupt the data.
If the BIOS doesn't see a hard drive, it's one of two things:

Bad hard drive
Bad hard drive controller on motherboard

Alan <>< i opened the back to see the hard drive and it looks alright its monted on with a metal hingle like thing.

and im not really sure how to check if its getting power

i tryed the instructions but the first one said to talk to the manufactuars i dont really wanna do that right now just finished battleing microsoft about my 360.

and for the recovery disk i wanna check with you guys that all of them are the same?
if so i think i can bt the data get it on a disk

and about the auto detect thing i put on the exit section of the bios menu there was like a thing that said reset VALUES to orignal settings and i tryed that but it did nothing1. Can you give us the exact Make, Series, Model and serial number of the notebook? I'm not that familiar with laptops/notebooks and I'd like to see if I can find some documentation with pictures from Sony web site or internet. I'm interested in how hard it would be to reseat the hard drive in its connection and also what BIOS configuration information is available thru CMOS setup displays.

Make: Sony Vaio
Series: ?
Model: ?
Serial Nbr: ?

2. Similiar information on the hard drive if it's not too much trouble (otherwise we can WAIT on that):

Make:
Model:
Capacity:

The manufacturer of the hard drive may have some diagnostic utilities that you can download and run to test the operation of the drive and the integrity of the disk surfaces (although I'm thinking you have to see drive in BIOS before you can access it. If I'm wrong on this point, someone please correct me.)

You're probably going to have to try your hard drive in a known good machine, or put a known good hard drive in your laptop to troubleshoot this if "reseating" the hard drive doesn't help.

2. What version/level of Windows XP do you have?

Version: Home Edition or Professional
Level: Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Service Pack 2 (SP2)

3. Have you ever successfully booted this Sony Vaio laptop from the hard drive? Basically have you been using it successfully in the past with its current configuration?

I'm assuming the only configuration change is your reset the CMOS settings to their original factory defaults.

4. Was the hardware recently worked on or modified? Or did you receive it broken?

5. In your first post you asked for a "boot" disk? Is this a Windows XP setup CD, a Sony Vaio Recovery CD, or something else?

6. I don't think the Sony Vaio Recovery CDs are all the same. I would think you would need one to match the Make and Model of your laptop. But who knows, maybe they have all drivers necessary for complete family of laptops. Somebody else might want to comment on this.

If you're talking about Window XP Recovery Console, yeah that's standard Microsoft stuff, but you might need a Windows XP setup CD of the correct Level, e.g. original, SP1, SP2.

7. If you want to verify the laptop still works, you could try a bootable CD. The following link for "MemTest86 3.3" gives you access to CD or floppy drive images that boot and run from their own operating system.

Solve : Need help formatting unallocated hdd space?

Answer»

hey guys,
i recently installed windows xp service pack 1 on a new system i built. I have a 250GB hdd but as we all know, old versions of XP can only read 131gb. so i updated to sp2 and now it shows my hdd is 250GB, but only 131gb are USABLE because the rest isnt formatted. i ran disk management and selected to format all the unallocated space to a new X: drive. however as soon as the formatting finished, the computer crashed. i couldnt get it to boot again until i shut off the machine and turned it back on. now it shows the X: drive in My Computer, but it still isnt formatted. i tried formatting it again as NTFS by right clicking but again it crashed upon completion. does anyone know what i can do to get the rest of my hard drive space usable? thanks alot for the help
If the machine has a floppy drive you could DLoad a WinME file from bootdisk.com. Extract the file to a clean floppy to create the bootdisk and then put it in and re-boot.
You could then run FDisk to create the partition with the unused space and then when it's done format it also from the bootdisk.
Then remove the floppy and re-boot and you should have a second partition containing the un-used space.

An Excellent FDisk tutorial can be found Herethanks a lot.. ill install a floppy drive and give it a shot.. would it be possible to burn the file to a cd and boot with the cd install so i dont have to install a floppy?Yes. Depending on the burner program you are USING the procedures are a little different. You will find the documentation at the bootdisk site...
Did you look at the FDisk tutorial yet ? ?
You don't want to accidently FDisk your existing drive...you will lose all your data.no but thanks for the warning. i'll review it carefully and try formatting tomorrowThere are third party programs that claim they can combine partitions without data loss but i've had issues with them so i don't recommend that route for everyone.
The SAFEST way if you want it all ONE drive would be to use an imaging program such as Acronis True Image or GHOST and burn the image after verifying it to CD/DVD.
Then using FDisk delete the existing partitions and re-create the drive with one 250G partition.
But you could always just use the other partition for syorage. You may find it very handy this way.
Let us know either way...Well i've tried everything. i used partition magic to add the unallocated space to my C: drive and that didnt work. i tried to create two separate partitions but that didnt work. i tried slipstreaming my xp cd to include sp2 so i could do a clean install with one 250GB partition but that still didnt work. It seems like windows can only handle a drive thats 131GB. even thought it acknowledges the rest of my harddrive, once i format it it crashes. it would format completely, but the instant it reaches 100%, i get an error saying it couldnt format the drive and then goes to blue screen. i figure its either my windows cd, the harddrive, or the mobo but i dont know what else to do. im running a Gigabyte p35-ds3l mobo with 250gb SATA Seagate hd on windows xp pro. if anyone can help me that will be awesomeFor slipstreaming and unattended install CD's i highly recommend NLite

Works for me complete with a tutorial.

Let us know.
