Solve : computer resolution trouble...help!!?

Answer»

Hey, im new to the forum and i am having some computer trouble.

i was at my friends house and i was on her computer. I accidently changed her screen resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x768. After doin this the monitor went blank and started said "input not supported". It never switched back to the 1024x768 setting and it seems to be stuck at 1280x768. I have TRIED to START the computer in safe mode, but the computer still seems to be stuck at 1280x768. I have also tried to switch the monitor with another one, and the same problem still occurs.

at this point I'm stumped...if anyone has any advice let me know. thanks. In Safe Mode, did you see "Safe Mode" displayed in all four corners?Jon, you COULD TRY this little program. It says it WORKS from a command line.

I have not tested this program, you download and use it at your own risk.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Resolution-Changer.shtmlYou've reset the display resolution in the Windows "registry" to a value the monitor cannot support. Basically you need to boot to "Safe Mode" which uses a lower resolution, reset the desired resolution within Display properties, and reboot.

Hewlett-Packard provides excellent troubleshooting procedures. Follow "step 6.a thru 6.e" of the following link: Monitor Displays Message about Signal out of Range

Solve : Deleting unused folders from Program Files?

Answer»

I was just browsing through the various Program Files on my C DISC and found some that seemed useless. Like AOL9 and Big Fix. I went to my add/remove programs on my control panel and saw that there were no programs currently installed with those names. Can I delete these folders from my Program Files without CAUSING harm?

THANKS,
MarkMost likely, yes.And thank you again Broni for your quick reply! You're welcome
If you want to be extra cautious, don't empty RECYCLE Bin for couple of days to see, if computer doesn't complain about deleted folders.

Solve : 2 'preview' entries in JPEG context menu?

Answer»

Hello again

Got another ONE of those classic Windows dumbnesseses...

2 preview ENTRIES for context menu in JPEG, as much as I 'love' JPEG, I have no NEED for the extra entry.

The file TYPE association advanced tab shows no preview commands & the default action shows as open:

Same for both JPEG & JPG extensions...

(gotta larf ain't yu?)

Any clues?Download, and install ShellExView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
It'll let you handle context menu entries.Hi Broni

I have that, & I see this...

I take it it's the shell image verb?I'm not sure. Could be. Try to disable it, and see what happens with context menu entries.
You may need to restart.Yep... that worked. Hopefully it doesn't pop it's ugly head up again after a restart.

Thanks Broni You won't know, until you restart...heheheha! Broni u always tickle me... I have to have some fun, don't I?...LOL

Solve : Recover NTFS encrypted files in WinXP?

Answer»

By using NTFS encryption feature, I had ENCRYPT some FILES in my Win XP pro.

After that, I install Win XP using Advanced OPTION on same partition. That Windows folder is renamed as WinXP.

Now I have two windows folders named "Windows" (For old XP) and "WinXP" (For new XP)

After, I just delete all old XP files including "Windows" folder from Windows Explorer.

I totally forget to decrypt the encrypted files on NTFS file SYSTEM before delete old XP.

Now all encrypted files and the old XP username setting which is found on "Documents and Settings" folder are not opened.

Both says same error message "Access is denied".

Also I am try to copy that files using Fedora Linux 8 but no use.

There is possible way to recover my files.Without the encryption key, there will be no way to decrypt your files. It sounds to me like you've deleted any hope of recovering those files. There are ways to recover them, but it requires an adminstrator's account plus access to the public key of the user who encrypted the file, which you no longer have.I have administrator account. But Where can I found public key of the user.

Mention full path of that public key which is default. If you didn't specify a DRA (data recovery agent) when you encrypted the file and you no longer have that user account, that data is lost.Wow, I got the solution ...

Advanced EFS Data Recovery (AEFSDR Pro) for Windows is great software to recover encrypted files from NTFS partition. Only partial keys required to recover. Home page is http://www.elcomsoft.com/aefsdr.html

But it is shareware. Only demo is availabe for free download that recover some KB in total file size.

For full recover we must buy it.

Solve : more computer shut down problems?

Answer»

You guys helped me out about a month ago with a problem I had where my computer would randomly (and sometimes not so randomly) shut down down without warning.

The problem seems to be back. It just randomly shuts off. Not as much as before, but now there are other problems. I was able to run a Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware once, but that was before I updated it. THen the computer shut down the two times I tried running it again, and now it won't EVEN open - I GET "such and such file is not a valid Win32 application."

Tried updating Cure It, but it wouldn't finish downloading the updates. Super AntiSpyware just won't open.

I do have a Hijack This log. Any help is much appreciated!

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]I see no infection. Topic moved.Does your system auto-restart after the shutdown?

Any error entries in an Event Log?

Remove a side panel of that machine and check to see if all fans are operating properly.
Heat is one of the more common causes for shutdowns.
Also it may be time to do some housekeeping.
For this you WANT to get a can of compressed air.
Blow out all heatsinks and fans ...Caution: Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place when blasting near them to prevent damaging them.

As always when working inside the case remove all power SOURCES and take anti-static precautions...

Solve : Remote Asistance HELP?

Answer»

I am running win xp pro Service Pack2.

In my windows Firewall under the Aceptions TAB is a list of things that the Firewall lets through.

One thing says Remote Asistance and the other says Remote Desktop.

I need help to learn all about something I would like to do?

Without buying a Program to Connect to another computer with.
I know there is a way to conect one computer to another over the internet.

I ask because my Cousin has a lot of prablems with her computer and if I could connect to her computer from my computer it would be faster for me to click this and do that if you get me.

I know I can have remote acsess to her computer with my computer with no ather program and I also know it may take a little longer to do.

But I realy would like to know how to do this?

She also has win xpClick start, help and support and select remote assistance. Good luck.I just have a fue Q/As I need help with?

When I foundout how to do Remote Desktop it told me?
If you're not connecting to the host computer through a VPN, you'll need to use the actual IP address of the host computer instead of the computer name

Ok so I know when people say COMPTER Name they meen the name given to every computer when it is set up on say a Compony Network like in an office. And they are all connected together with a Cable. And every computer has a real name so every computer know who to send the Data Packets to.

This I get but what is actual IP address?
I thought an IP Adress was Internet Protocal Address
And it was numbers??

Please whelp I am almost there? This is good for access to anothers computer:https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=home&lang=en
Guide your cousin to this, over the phone, and then get her password and your in.I found some help topics on How to set up Remote Desktop and it told me to findout your other COMPUTERS IP Adress.

Go to you othr computer and type in IPCONFIG

is this the IP Adress I need to connect over the internet to my Cousins computer??I am setting up Remote Desktop on my Home Computer and my Work Computer and I have one q/a??

My Work Computer have win ME on it and I when into the system properties to turn on Remote Access and the Tab that says Remote was not there.

And when I whent into Controla Panle I did not see a Windows Firewall Icon.

So I have to ask does my work computer have to have win xp pro for me to connect to it from my home computer?

My work computer is the one with all the Files I will be working on from my home computer.

I just wanted to know if my work computer must have win xp pro as well as my home computer?
thanksHere is a great program, I believe I GOT from the contributors on CH, it is called Team Viewer.
TeamViewer establishes connections to any PC all around the world within just a few SECONDS. You can remote control your partner's PC as if you were sitting right in front of it.

Solve : A trivial question but a problem that bugs me?

Answer»

I've FIGURED this out once before but for the life of me can't do it again. I want my desktop to not disappear after the given time to go to the screen saver. In other words, after my computer goes to screen saver and I call the screen back up, I would like for it to be my desktop and not the user login screen. I run XP HOME edition BTW and IE7.Right click your desktop and than click the screensaver TAB. Uncheck the password protect box.

Thanks a bunch Spoiler, it was bugging me very much.PS: the box to uncheck SAYS," On resume, display the welcome page" but I got what you meant. Thanks again.

Log on to another computer with INTERNET CONNECTION (if not at home, at an Internet cafe) and download the Firefox setup FILE to a USB drive. Plug the USB drive into the computer with problems and run the setup file.

Hope this works.

Solve : System disk failure?

Answer»

Hi...
I'm trying to format my hard drive and reinstall WinXP home edition.(I used WinXP Pro).
I've done this many times and never had a problem in the past but this time when i put Windows XP CD in the cd-rom i get that message-System disk FAILURE INSERT system disk and press enter-.
i chance the sequence of booting in my BIOS, so the cd-rom is first but nothing happend.
So, i cannot format my hard drive at all.
Just to MENTION, hard drive and cd-rom is working properly.

Any ideas please???
How do you know the hard drive is working properly? Its spinning up and being detected at POST aren't proof of FULL functionality.

Are you prompted to boot from the CD?

Solve : Service Pack 3 Download Win XP Pro (Should go under Windows XP)?

Answer»

Well … I did it again! I downloaded SP 3 without thinking and cannot boot in any mode or via CD.

I am running Windows XP Pro on an Intel Pentium IV (2.4 GHz, 512 KB Cache & 800 MHz)
I use an ABIT IS7 and 1 GB RAM.
My hard drive is a Western Digital WD360GD 36 GB SATA w/ * MB cache.
I have Pioneer (DVD-120T) 16X DVD ROM & (DVR-106) 4X Write, 2.4X Rewrite, 16X Write & 10X Rewrite) Drives.
My system would not boot hanging up on Select boot mode and then looping back to this same point regardless of the mode selected.
I reprogrammed the BIOS to boot from the Pioneer drives and they each got to loading the MS Windows then stalled at some loading DLL files.
Microsoft, India FINALLY threw in the towel and suggested that I contact a competent source at home.
This is what I'm doing.
Since all my programs and data are in a single partition on the hard drive I may have to loose the data … no biggie.
It has been my intention to procure an additional hard drive, say 500 GB or do.
Should I:
1.Install a new HD and temporarily disconnect the original and try loading the OP system on the new one?
2.Acquire a repair disk from Microsoft?
3.Or?

Your help will be appreciated,
Phil
Did you download SP3 through a bit torent? It is likely that the copy you got is corrupt or you may have hit a bug in the code. I personally avoided SP3 on the web, since as SOON as it was leaked out in July, MS shut of the leak, and there may be reasons for why they are not ready to release it,and you hit one of those reasons.

Looks like you are going to be looking at a rebuild...

You could try an emergency repair floppy from another system of XP Pro, but this could cause even more problems than when you started.

If you have important data on the hard drive, I would install a new or used HD and install the OS to it, then reintoduce the original hard drive as a slave to get your data.Dave,

I downloaded from Microsoft's website "downloads" thinking that it was a released version. It COMPLETED and rebooted my computer thereby causing my problems.

I have a new HD and will try your suggestion.

Thank you,

PhilAfter following Dave's advice...which is the best solution (dis-connecting the old drive first is highly recommended)...and the old drive is connected as Slave you can use XP's File and Settings transfer wizard to get your old settings back from the original XP install...
Dis-connecting the old drive for this is highly recommended...

This is also a great time to start seriously considering a solid backup strategy...if you need any suggestions Post back.

P.S. SP # 3 is still in BETA...wait for the final release.Or the alternative is to go to your hard drive makers website and download the tools for your drive and flatten it that way. I know with western digital Data Lifeguard you can get the bootable CD for DOS and your computer will launch it before you go into windows and you can zero your drive out.

Hope that helpsThanks to Dave, Patio and KenW!

After installinga new HD, disconnected the old HD, reprogrammed my BIOS and rasing the thermal parameters I was successful in loading MS Windows XP Pro and partitioned the new 500 Gb HD.

Phil (OOPS)
Nicely Done...seeya around.

To change directories use the "cd" command. To change drives use the drive letter followed by a colon; e.g. "c:", "d:", "e:".

See Learning MS-DOS Basics - A TutorialI'm quite familiar with DOS. I tried cd C: and I kept GETTING bad command. The only one that would work was dir and help. I'm booting from the CD now and it only gives me one option and that is to format the existing partition which is the whole drive. Oh well, I suppose I can partition it after the os is installed.Quote from: SuperDave

Not factual, prior to giving you the option to format you will get the option to delete partition(s). After that you will have to create new partition(s) for which you must specify the size(s). Then you will get the option to format.

Good luckQuote from: SuperDave on April 29, 2008, 06:52:18 AM

Hi

I have an O20 AppInit_DLLs registry entry HKLM\WinNT\CV\Windows\AppInit_DLLs that has a value: □□□õĈ□D □ and which is in my Autostart list in AVG-AS.

Has it something to do with networking printing?

Does anyone have any idea what this does and if it is dodgy.

Thanks for any advice.Have you gone to the AVG forum and posted the question

GOEC62~1.DLL is legit, and related to Google Desktop software, which allows you to quickly search your computer for emails, web history, and files.
Those strange CHARACTERS may be a sign of file corruption.
If you use Google Desktop, try to uninstall, reinstall.

Solve : changing default on file/folder menus?

Answer»

Sorry in advance if I did this wrong. First time with any kind of users forum.

My laptop properties - [dell inspiron 1100, Intell(R), Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.20 GHZ, 1GB RAM, MS Windows XP, Home Edition v2002, Service Pack 2]

Situation - whenever I TRY to locate a FILE or folder in the file/folder menus, the View default presents them as 'Icons' and never remembers when I select Details.

Question - how can I change the default so that the files and folders are always listed in 'Details' when I open the menu?

If the answer really is in some FAQ, please just tell me where to find it.

Thank you.Open any folder and set the view to details. Then go to tools>folder options. Go to the view tab and click on "Apply to all folders"S.G. - your suggestion worked! Since you don't LIST an email, I don't know how to thank you. If anyone reading this knows how, please tell me. Tiegh

Solve : Lost password?

Answer»

For some reason Windows is asking for a password to start up and I don't have it. HP wants $50 to walk me through the steps to log back on but it's 5 years old and we're getting a new one soon so I don't want to spend the money on it. I was thinking I could start it in safe mode and use the system restore and go back a day or two but safe mode asks for a password also. Can someone tell me a way I can log on or by-pass the password?

Thanks!!!What password? The BIOS password or the password to login to your account in Windows?I think it's the password to log unto windows. What's the BIOS password? If you get a password prompt as soon as the computer starts... it's the bios password.
If it's a password at the windows WELCOME screen, it's the login password.

Speaking of Windows... what version of Windows is on the computer?Okay, it's the windows password and it's XP.Have you TRIED login to the Administrator account in safe mode? From there you're able to reset the password.Tried that, it's still asking for a password.http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

follow the directions at this site to create a BOOTABLE disk and SET your password back to blank for administrator.

You will need to burn a CD or boot off of a floppy.

DaveIsn't that for windows NT or will it WORK on XP?http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm

Solve : re, watching UK programmes outside the UK?

Answer»

I am based in Egypt on BUSINESS. I WOULD like to watch all the UK programmes through my laptop. Can you please advise.

Jenny DedmanHello Jenny - welcome to the CH forums.

You can get UK streaming tv for about 25 quid a month from here... Not sure about it being all the UK tv channels. You'll need high speed internet connection.

Put it in as a business expense.

LOLDusty,
Are all the programs that we don't need to pay for and still watch TV shows and songs etc on them Illegal ?

Just want to know to be safe.Ivy - you'd have to take advice from a qualified practicing legal person to get an answer to that one.

I am of the opinion that if a media company streams their products on the Internet without encryption then they want US to look/listen to them, how we do that is our affair provided that we do not breach their copyright by recording and distributing the products for free or for monetary gain.

However, if a company streams and GIVES clear warning that their PRODUCT must be purchased that's another matter. A very gray area.

Thankyou Dusty.

Now can I be on the safe side.

That doesn't tell us what's plugged into each of your USB ports. That's what we need to know.I plug just the mouse into USB Borrow a mouse from someone and see if that works...if it does replace your mouse.
NOTE: They are not designed to be swapped with the power on.thanks!
Can it be occur like me while I use two or more USB devices? That would mean there is a problem with your USB ports...but let's try it one step at a time...grab another mouse first.the same result! Sounds like either:

1) Your USB ports have a problem

2) You have too many devices plugged into USB ports and are therefore over powering them. This can occur when using unpowered hubs, ports built-in to a USB keyboard, or ports built into another external device

Solve : making a hard drive image?

Answer»

If you were to make a hard drive image (using tool like Acronis Disk Imager), is it possible to install that image to a DIFFERENT hard drive?

A clone of the original COMPUTER's stuff on another hard drive? Just wondering....I haven't been able to make much sense of your question. First you clone a hard drive then you want to install it on another hard drive. The two don't go together.

If you mean clone drive C: to drive D: then clone drive D: to E: the answer is yes.Yes. Cloning a hard drive usually means taking two hard drives, one with data on, and the other one either BLANK or containing data that can be erased, and using a software program such as Acronis Disk Imager (or good old Norton Ghost) to make the blank one an exact copy of the first one. All in one operation. people often do this when they buy a new hard disk to replace an OLDER one, and they want to transfer their operating system and/or data to the new drive.

Another way to get the same result is to use the same software to make an "image file" of the first disk (on another disk, removable or otherwise) and later use the software to recreate the first disk on another one. Companies often do this so they can set up a PC just how they want it, and later on copy ("deploy") the disk contents to other computers.

Either way, you get a copy (a "clone") of what was on a disk, on another disk.so you can huh? if I ever got a new computer, and I want to transfer all the data, I can simply just make a backup disk image with the Acronis Imager or the Norton Ghost, I can then just install it right into the new hard drive?

This way, I can simply transfer all files and programs as is WITHOUT needing to reinstall windows, any programs or even move any hard drives or components....The old and new computers would have to be identical, in every way, because Windows adapts itself to the hardware when it is installed. Even then non-corporate versions might need to go through reactivation because unique hardware IDs would be different. (It would think the motherboard and HDD were changed)

Solve : CD/DVD drives not working ??

Answer»

Hi All,

Got a problem....when I load a CD/DVD into the drive...nothing happens !! The light comes on for about 15 seconds and then goes off...nothing on the screen of my laptop and no evidence in My Computer that there is a CD/DVD drive at all.....any ideas as to why this could be happening please ?

Thanks..RussHi,

What o/s are you using?

RicharddCheck out this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641Other options...

Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see TWO ITEMS:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Wish I had been smart enough to think of that.Hi..thanks for all of your suggestions...I have tried them all and none of them have worked ! I uninstalled and restarted and still no joy.

Any other help gratefully received.....my o/s is XP.How OLD is this drive ? ?
The only way to test if it has failed is to swap it into another MACHINE...
Did you re-seat the wide RIBBON cable (IDE) ?

You could try another cable as well...they do go bad sometimes.

Laptop.......DuH ! on me ! !Hi,
If your laptop is like my IBM T30, the drive sometime comes unseated. Slide it out, and push it back in and voila!

Richard

Is the drive listed in Device Manager without any errors?

Solve : JUST A QUESTION! restoring xp to factory settings?

Answer» HEY,
I'm going to restore a computer which is running XP and i'm going to USE the return to factory settings options.....will this remove XP from the computer? I do not have the recovery disk. Not usually...the Restore files are usually on a hidden partition that is not touched by the restore....but i would check the manuf. website to be sure.
You will however LOSE any installed programs on that MACHINE along with all your data so do your backups first.
It basically takes the machine back to Day One status.

Solve : Scratchy audio?

Answer»

When my computer (Compaq evo minitower, 512 RAM) starts up, the musical signature (Windows XP SP2, legal, automatic updating) is scratchy. When I play music it is often scratchy too (particularly when something is WORKING in the background, such as a browser starting). Happens with both Windows Media Player and Winamp. I've run CC cleaner, checked spyware (Ad Aware SE and SPYBOT) and viruses (Nod32), upgraded Windows media player, upgraded sound driver (SoundMax integrated audio - I don't know how to remove and reinstall audio drivers, but I was able to check for upgrades via Device Manager); I tried chkdsk/r and Device Manager; they show all is fine. I removed my video card, problem persists. Every now and then CPU usage is flat at 100% and that's usually when the sound goes bad, so I guess (?) it's not a hardware problem. Speakers are at same volume and position they've always been. Other programs also work more slowly too. Only new devices in area are video card (which I took out) and a second hard DRIVE, but these were installed and working several weeks before the problems. Most of what I do is Office, browsing, email and listening to music. The master hard disc (40GB) is about 75% full, when I defragmented, I noticed quite a big percentage of the files showed up as red on the report meaning (I think) that many files stayed fragmented, but to some lesser extent this has always been the case. Any suggestions will be welcome. Happy to report a solution to the problem of scratchy sound and general slowness and immense usage of CPU (found on other forums). The issue was PIO vs DMA. There are a few web SITES describing the problem and the solution including one from Microsoft - GOOGLE PIO and you will find them.

Solve : Hi, help! need help on a new used computer screen is blank?

Answer»

???it was working until i decided to run the isp cd to install and it would not accept the puter cause the color was just 16 bits and the other size font ? was 480 x 600 or something like that...so in trying to fix it, lol, i hit the disable button on one of those displays menus thingies, and that was 3 days and long nights ago and i am stumped..have researched already on this wonderful place i FOUND you today and tried your suggestion, along w/a couple of more...
nothing is working so far....thanks, judyJudy - Welcome to the CH forums & we're glad you found us.

In order to help you we need information. Don't forget that we can't see your computer, don't know if it's a laptop or DESKTOP, what brand and model and can't find out what your hardware or operating system is unless you tell us. A cure for your problem may differ between Windows 98 and Windows XP so we really do need you to advise us.

Please read this and come back with some info.

Hi Dusty,

SORRY about that of course that would be necessary...i will try to provide it before i have too many senior moments tonight...learning this puter stuff at my age has not been the easiest, but i love it..i just bought second hand a gateway 500 destop, xphome edition, 15' gateway screen and hope that is what you needed.... dont know much more..lol it was working fine until i started trying to use the isp cd so i could get it on line,etc..well, i printed out several things to try today on your SITE and others and nothing seems to work in safe mode, where i was tonight...i know i messed up when i disabled the vga card (i think that was it) in a display window and couldnt get back to redo screen just went blank..nothing now.... thank you for your welcome and any help would be so grateful....judyHi,

sorry to appear inpatient w/my question from early am, but just failed on my last hope of finding an answer to my problem and wondered if anyone available could perhaps help me .... tks, judyI haven't been able to spend much time researching your problem but seems to me it's possible that you have disabled the video driver hence no pics.

Did you get the driver disk (Disk 1 of the System Restoration Kit) when you bought the hardware and did you get an XP installation disk?

BTW, the sites I visited mention the Gateway 500 running Windows ME so XP is probably an upgrade. If you have an XP install disk, doing a Repair install might fix the problem.

Hi Dusty,

thanks to you I have done a repair installation on my problem and was a breeze to do COMPARED to having just bought a new used computer and couldn't use it!!!!! after a stupid mistake on my part..

thanks again for your help.....good job..

Solve : Daughter made screen fonts smaller on accident help?

Answer»

My daughter was doing her online school and threw her leg up on the desk and on the keyboard. Some how she SAID the SCREEN font kept getting smaller and smaller untill you can not read them. When she pulled her leg down it stoped but we can not fiqure out how to fix it. It is not like that on all screens such as this forum is fine but on her school some are and some are not. Also on some of my banking and such they are small and unreadable. What did she do and how can I fix it? My operating system is Windows 2000 profesional
Thanks for any help I can getFor your "banking and such", are you using Internet Explorer?

Right click on a blank area of your desktop, i.e. your normal computer screen in Windows, and select Properties. In the Display Properties panel, select Settings. What do you see there for "Screen resolution"?If its just the text and not the screen resolution than HOLD down your control key and use the wheel on your MOUSE to change the size.

If what Spoiler suggested does not work for you, try: click start, click control panel, click display. In the Fonts box size should be set on normal. Change the font size, click apply and reboot. If that CORRECTED problem or if it did not change your fonts back to normal.

Solve : Meaning of "mail.ccpsnet.net"?

Answer»

I had the following POP up on my computer last night:

mail.ccpsnet.net

The box that popped up had an e-mail account of mine and a space to enter the password. I just cancelled out of it.

It came up two more times.

Is it possible someone is hacking into my computer?

Thanks.Sounds like your e-mail program is set to check mail at intervals...
What program is it and have you checked under account settings or options ?This is a hotmail account. No matter what the setting is on the account, this has NEVER happened.

If someone has a copy of my hard drive, would they be able to access my e-mail remotely?

If someone has a copy of your hard drive there's no telling what they are capable of...
How do you CONNECT to the INTERNET ? ?
Why do you suspect this is the case ? ?
How long ago did this happen ?Quite a large (I mean, REALLY large) set of viruses use techniques like this to attempt to get your password.

Do you know of Chesterfield School District? Thats where the email address belongs.

What Antivirus, Spyware, and Adware software do you have installed for protection? I have Norton antivirus installed on the computer.

This happened just the three times and it was the day before yesterday. (Monday).

I connect to the internet via internet explorer. Should I be using Firefox?

Solve : Windows Run Command box not working?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm running on an admin account in windows xp pro.
When I try to use key combo for accessing to windows Run Command box, I receive this message

"Restrictions:
This OPERATION has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

If I open the Group Policy Editor and go check in User Configuration > Administration Templates > Start Menu and Task, all items there are "Not Configured" (same for the item called "Remove Run menu from Start Menu"). I also check for all the "NoRun" iterations in registry but am not seeing the culprit if it's there...

I did check the system's health with some tools (SpyBot-S&D, SUPERAntiSpyware, David H. Lipman's and AVZ Antiviral's Toolkit, and NOD32), but nothing obviously NEFARIOUS was found.

--
All advices very welcomeI have found the global policies to stick sometime. Or if you change one and than change it back to the Not Configured is still stays as configured. I also had the same THING happen with the regedit command.

Go in and change it to disabled.

Tried to mix and MESS within GPE, but no better go.

I also just run an HijackThis pass.
There only is a possibly weird reporting about "CTFMON.EXE" file (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599):

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User '?')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User '?')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')

I don't have MS Office installed on this pc! And, strangely, this file is not seen by other tools like MS' AutoRun and A-square's HiJackFree...

I had to change back "NoRun" value from 1 to 0 in those 2 two keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

Solve : Can't install XP on external HDD ????

Answer»

I'm in a bit of a pickle here and I need to get "UP" asap.

HP Pavilion zv5000 notebook with XP-sp2 OS and Recovery CD (and driver CD). PURCHASED Jan/05.

Internal 2.5" HDD failure (my 2nd in 36 months) - perhaps a "nasty" scribbled on it because it formats just fine on another machine. I also backed up my critical stuff before formatting. (FORMAT fails on the HP!)

But a new INSTALL (on a NEW same-size HDD) simply doesn't work... after the FORMAT completes, the Install PROGRAM complains the partition has "too much room" or some such thing. I fear the internal HDD interface is not functional.

So, to get around the internal HDD interface issues temporarily I hooked up a Firewire to a 3.5" HDD externally... and removed the internal HDD ALTOGETHER. The Install program sees the external HDD as "C:", checks it, formats it, LETS me doodle with it... but REFUSES to install XP on an EXTERNAL HDD. (I'm wondering why the install pgm loads all those drivers if it isn't going to use them somehow?)

Is there a "policy issue" with this? The following msg was presented:

[ Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free space you chose. Setup cannot install WIndows XP on this hard disk. -- This lack of access doesn't necessarily indicate an error condition. For example, disks attached to a SCSI adapter that wasn't installed by your computer manufacturer or to a secondary hard disk controller, are typically not visible to the startup program unless special software is used. Contact your computer or HDD manufacturer for more information. ]

Okay... where do I buy some of this "special software"? I tried the new install with the Recovery CD, and also tried a new "XP Pro" CD... both to the external. Same message! (Both are OEM software CDs.)

The "internal" IDE HDD electronics seems to have forgotten how to do a FORMAT so XP won't load there either.

Remedies? Other than this sillyness I sort of liked the Pavilion!

MattXP by design will not install to an external HDD. Seems Bill didn't want versions of his OS just floating around out there so they built it this way.
It can be done but is an enormous amount of work.

Hearing that the machine will not format a HDD is not a good sign either...
Sounds like your suspicions of the internal controller going bad are probably correct.
Sorry. So I DID stumble onto a policy issue... drat!

I can FORMAT the internal HDDs on another machine. But as soon as the Install pgm's Format/Q touches them in the HP they're suddenly unworthy.

Can't understand this. There must be some magic in the volume name, perhaps a code of some sort that hints "this drive was sold with this machine." I have 3 of these 2.5" internals I've been using as working data backups. They PERFORM flawlessly. I sacrificed one for the HP repair attempt. What I fail to understand is that I can't load XP on any of them to keep for emergencies (like this one.)

I even bought the 1G ram chip for the HP, 2 large HDDs and enclosures... and everything is just sitting around waiting...

Frustrating...
I'm still "smarting" from just finding out my 2-Year Extended Warranty only covered one year.

Solve : "r" ??

Answer»

My laptop has problems starting up and always SAYS it has recovered from a serious ERROR when it finally starts up. Well I turned it on today for it to open all the way to my desktop then restart, which happens sometimes, and when i restarted it goes to the avertec name page right after i press power and then it goes to a black screen which says

windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt- windows/system32/config/system

You can attempt to repair this file by using Windows Setup using the orginal setup CD-rom
Select "r" at the first screen to begin repair

the only THING on the first screen is it says press f2 for system utilities, where is this r?Can you boot in safemode?I cant boot anywhere, I press the on button the Avertec page comes up and then the message above comes on right away.

I did a little research on this and my understanding when i put the disc in, it should boot up differently, and from there i can press r on the keyboard to repair it..am i missing something? http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=307545Do you have a genuine windows Install disk,or a system recovery disk ?

Also, which windows ?Its Windows XP. As for the either question im assuming its a system recovery disk.

Anyway, I figured out how to go in the F2 screen and boot it off a disk before the hard drive. I decided to wipe it clean, since the onyl thing I will really be losing is Office 2000. I will let you guys know what happens.Nothing wrong with a clean wipe and install once in awhile...Well, the one computer game i play that needs a cd is now saying its corrupt when trying to install

but i do think the startup problem i had orginally has something to do with the windows update screwing everything upWhere is the Game CD from ? ?
If it's a copy or a torrent etc. that might explain it.

Solve : forgot my password to login to windows xp?

Answer»

I forgot my password to login to windows xp

Is there anyway to login ?How do people forget their passwords to Windows? There must be some epidemic that causes amnesia.

I got my card just a few days back, but its amazing, I have cracked a million codes by now.
Anyway ...............I have also forgoten my password. As an explanation, it is an older computer of mine and I did change it shortly before not using it anymore. So is there a way to get in, codebreaker? I have a ton of Photos and programs I would not like to LOSE. Please someone have an answer.I guess I should also put in my laptop is a Gatway running Windows XP.Please START your own theard if nessary. We are not required to gove out information like this.all u have to do is press f8 at start up to get to the safemode feature. Once u get there u can go to settings and find security settings. There u can change or delete passwords. Once u do that turn the computer off and reboot regularly. Now you should have either a new password or not have a password at all. You'll probably need the password in order to not have oneOK that is funny. Quote from: quaxo on April 28, 2008, 08:48:12 PM

The same affliction that causes expensive Program CD's to go missing as well....Now, I once misplaced a Windows CD, couldn't find it for a month and found out I had just put it in the wrong case. I've had clients who didn't realize the importance of recovery CDs and misplaced them. But a Windows password? Something you use every TIME you turn on or restart the computer. Any request for such a thing is always suspicious to me. And I don't buy the "my kid CHANGED it and doesn't remember now" story either. That "kid" better start thinking!I got 30 PM's from someone who "mis-placed" their AutoCad CD's......imagine just CASUALLY misplacing something that's worth over $800.00

Solve : How can I print screen?

Answer»

I made this project in MS DOS, I tried to run it and it worked but I wanted to print screen the page and PUT it in Microsoft word. However when I tried to paste it, it wasn't there, COMPLETELY blank. Please help me.
(I pressed the print screen in my keyboard but then when I tired to paste it in my MS word it didn't show anything)Are you saying that when you attempt to paste the Print Screen image nothing is pasted? Are you able to Print Screen anything? Hmmm. That should work just fine. Do what EgoDeath suggested and see if you can print screen anything. Are you hitting a combination of keys or just the print screen button? Try this: Depress the Print Screen Key, then open word, make sure the cursor is where you WISH to paste. Using keyboard press Ctrl + V which should paste the screen shot in the open document. If so you can save the program where ever you wish with Ctrl + S. Try pasting a screen print into Paint. Can you do that?I believe in DOS SHIFT +print screen is the command...however it will only send to printer...to save it to a file you will need an ADDON program....
I'm not 100% certain on this but it's what i remember fron the DOS days.

Solve : Can Not Start Windows (XP Media Center Edition 2005)?

Answer»

Hi,

I get the:
"Sorry for the inconvenence but windows can not start" with the option; safe mode, last KNOW config. and run windows normally.

I try them all, get the same result... which is a quick flash of BSOD and then restarts.

Now, I have a Toshiba A105-S4114 and it didn't come with a copy XP Media Center 2005 so I am really unsure how to get this to boot back up just ONCE more for me save all my important files.

I've done some research and couldn't find a solution to this anywhere unless I had that XP Media Center cd.

I was looking into, Ultimate Boot CD and things of that nature, but doesn't SEEM that would help with my issue.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated, and a solution would be a LIFE SAVER, trust me!

THANKS!One solution would be to grab one of these:

This will allow you to hookup the laptop hard drive to a desktop IDE connector where you can copy/burn your files...
Also you may be able to create your Media Center Restore CD which will take the laptop back to Day One status...
WARNING ! You will lose all your data and any programs installed after you bought the machine.

You will need to check Toshiba's site for instructions on accessing the hidden partition that contains the Restore files.Ah yes, never would have thought of that.

Seems like a HASSLE to buy and wait for shipping and take apart everything, but thank god that there is a for sure safe route for my files and stuff!

Btw, my laptop did come with a "Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD" which would restore to "Out of Box State" so at least that won't be a problem.

Is there annny other route to solving this issue?

Thanks a lot patio!Any computer store in your area should have these...about 8 to 10 bucks so why wait for shipping ?
Most laptop drives are not too difficult to remove...usually it's an access panel with one or 2 screws.

It's the safest solution for retrieving your data since the system will not boot.So I GOT the part, and I am trying to get the adapter off the end of the Toshiba laptop harddrive to expose the 44 pins on the end of it, and CAN NOT get it off for the life of me.

Honestly, it's going to end up being broken, any tips? The drive should basically slide out, there might be a pull tab. Verify that you have removed all the screws. If you have a digital camera, you might consider taking a photo so we get a better idea of what is going on.

Image:
http://support.gateway.com/s/manuals/mobile/8508773/images/450sx4hd.jpg
I have the harddrive out already, but in order to get that adapter from my laptop hd to the desktop ide I need to expose the 44-pins on my laptop hd, and from doing research, seems like the store bought laptops all have adapters on the end of those pins.

I will be posting a photo if that wasn't clear enough, sorry, but have a busy day

Thanks for the help!

Solve : help recovering old photos of of old computer?

Answer»

I was digging thru the closet and came across an OLD computer of mine. I realized it has a couple of hundred old photos saved on it that I do not have copies of anywhere else. I am trying to transfer the photos to my new computer but I cannot get the old computer to recognize a thumb drive or the floppy drive and it has no burner. Its a really old system using win98SE. I am getting a message at start up that says "windows\system\crtdll.dll file is MISSING. I would reinstall the missing file but cannot find a win98 disk. Could this message be the cause of the floppy drive not working or not recognizing the thumb drive? Is there any other way to maybe transfer the photos without the older computer having internet SERVICE? Thanks for your HELP .Win98se does not have a driver for USB devices. Your old system will not be able to recognise your thumb drive unless you have a driver which can be installed.

Can you remove the hard drive from the old computer and connect it to a more modern system? Either:
(a) slave it and copy the files or
(b) connect it as an external drive using an adapter?

Crtdll.dll is part of Windows and can be downloaded from many internet sites.

Welcome to the CH forums.

Hooking that drive up as a slave drive in a working machine is your best bet as Dusty suggested...
