Solve : re-format? |
Answer» Help. I'm trying to re-format the HDD on one of my computers which is running Windows XP Pro. I WENT to bootdisk.com and tried everyone there with zero results. I tried creating a bootdisk on this COMPUTER which is running Windows XP Home. It works but I can't get out of the A drive. It won't accept any commands to change directory. I want to partition the HDD, re-format and then re-install Windows XP.After SETTING bios to boot from the cdrom first, boot from the XP cd from which you want to install then follow the on-screen prompts to delete/create partitions and format.Quote from: Dusty on April 28, 2008, 07:37:48 PM After setting bios to boot from the cdrom first, boot from the XP cd from which you want to install then follow the on-screen prompts to delete/create partitions and format.I tried that but all it wanted to do was install another Windows XP but I'll try it again tomorrow and pay more attention to the prompts.Quote from: SuperDave on April 28, 2008, 06:23:06 PM I tried creating a bootdisk on this computer which is running Windows XP Home. It works but I can't get out of the A drive. It won't accept any commands to change directory. I want to partition the HDD, re-format and then re-install Windows XP. To change directories use the "cd" command. To change drives use the drive letter followed by a colon; e.g. "c:", "d:", "e:". See Learning MS-DOS Basics - A TutorialI'm quite familiar with DOS. I tried cd C: and I kept GETTING bad command. The only one that would work was dir and help. I'm booting from the CD now and it only gives me one option and that is to format the existing partition which is the whole drive. Oh well, I suppose I can partition it after the os is installed.Quote from: SuperDave I'm booting from the CD now and it only gives me one option and that is to format the existing partition which is the whole drive. Not factual, prior to giving you the option to format you will get the option to delete partition(s). After that you will have to create new partition(s) for which you must specify the size(s). Then you will get the option to format. Good luckQuote from: SuperDave on April 29, 2008, 06:52:18 AM I tried cd C: and I kept getting bad command. This is something I always TRIP over. I'm sorry I wasn't clearer in my previous explanation. To change drives you just enter the drive letter followed by a colon; e.g. "c:", not "cd c:".Quote from: dahlarbear on April 29, 2008, 07:38:21 PM Quote from: SuperDave on April 29, 2008, 06:52:18 AMI tried that too. I wouldn't budge from the A: drive. Anyway, I have the OS installed and running fine. ThanksI tried cd C: and I kept getting bad command. |

Solve : Lost password? |
Answer» For some reason Windows is asking for a password to start up and I don't have it. HP wants $50 to walk me through the steps to log back on but it's 5 years old and we're getting a new one soon so I don't want to spend the money on it. I was thinking I could start it in safe mode and use the system restore and go back a day or two but safe mode asks for a password also. Can someone tell me a way I can log on or by-pass the password? |

That's what we need to know.I plug just the mouse into USB Borrow a mouse from someone and see if that works...if it does replace your mouse. NOTE: They are not designed to be swapped with the power on.thanks! Can it be occur like me while I use two or more USB devices? That would mean there is a problem with your USB ports...but let's try it one step at a time...grab another mouse first.the same result! Sounds like either: 1) Your USB ports have a problem 2) You have too many devices plugged into USB ports and are therefore over powering them. This can occur when using unpowered hubs, ports built-in to a USB keyboard, or ports built into another external device |

Solve : JUST A QUESTION! restoring xp to factory settings? |
Answer» HEY, I'm going to restore a computer which is running XP and i'm going to USE the return to factory settings options.....will this remove XP from the computer? I do not have the recovery disk. Not usually...the Restore files are usually on a hidden partition that is not touched by the restore....but i would check the manuf. website to be sure. You will however LOSE any installed programs on that MACHINE along with all your data so do your backups first. It basically takes the machine back to Day One status. |

Solve : Scratchy audio? |
Answer» When my computer (Compaq evo minitower, 512 RAM) starts up, the musical signature (Windows XP SP2, legal, automatic updating) is scratchy. When I play music it is often scratchy too (particularly when something is WORKING in the background, such as a browser starting). Happens with both Windows Media Player and Winamp. I've run CC cleaner, checked spyware (Ad Aware SE and SPYBOT) and viruses (Nod32), upgraded Windows media player, upgraded sound driver (SoundMax integrated audio - I don't know how to remove and reinstall audio drivers, but I was able to check for upgrades via Device Manager); I tried chkdsk/r and Device Manager; they show all is fine. I removed my video card, problem persists. Every now and then CPU usage is flat at 100% and that's usually when the sound goes bad, so I guess (?) it's not a hardware problem. Speakers are at same volume and position they've always been. Other programs also work more slowly too. Only new devices in area are video card (which I took out) and a second hard DRIVE, but these were installed and working several weeks before the problems. Most of what I do is Office, browsing, email and listening to music. The master hard disc (40GB) is about 75% full, when I defragmented, I noticed quite a big percentage of the files showed up as red on the report meaning (I think) that many files stayed fragmented, but to some lesser extent this has always been the case. Any suggestions will be welcome. Happy to report a solution to the problem of scratchy sound and general slowness and immense usage of CPU (found on other forums). The issue was PIO vs DMA. There are a few web SITES describing the problem and the solution including one from Microsoft - GOOGLE PIO and you will find them. |

Solve : Windows Run Command box not working? |
Answer» Hello, I have found the global policies to stick sometime. Or if you change one and than change it back to the Not Configured is still stays as configured. I also had the same thing happen with the regedit command. Tried to mix and MESS within GPE, but no better go. I also just run an HijackThis pass. There only is a possibly weird reporting about "CTFMON.EXE" file (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599): O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User '?') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User '?') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user') I don't have MS Office installed on this pc! And, strangely, this file is not seen by other tools like MS' AutoRun and A-square's HiJackFree... -- Thanks for your reply, Spoiler. You know you have to reboot after making CHANGES to the GP. Right? Solve : forgot my password to login to windows xp? |
Answer» I forgot my password to login to windows xp How do people forget their passwords to Windows? There must be some epidemic that causes amnesia. The same affliction that causes expensive Program CD's to go missing as well....Now, I once misplaced a Windows CD, couldn't find it for a month and found out I had just put it in the wrong case. I've had clients who didn't realize the importance of recovery CDs and misplaced them. But a Windows password? Something you use every TIME you turn on or restart the computer. Any request for such a thing is always suspicious to me. And I don't buy the "my kid CHANGED it and doesn't remember now" story either. That "kid" better start thinking!I got 30 PM's from someone who "mis-placed" their AutoCad CD's......imagine just CASUALLY misplacing something that's worth over $800.00 |

Answer» cmd still won't stay open. Do you have Windows XP CD?I am sure I do somewhere. So I need to re-install windows? If so How can save my music files I have tons and if I lose those people in my house will go nuts. I have done a sytem restore a long time ago,so it seems like everything is on here twice my regular files and c:mybackup files. I don't know how all that works but I don't wanna end up with 3 sets of files it already takes 3 hours for a virus scan due to the fact it RUNS through the BACK UPS,the regular and the music (there is a lot of music on media player!)When you insert Windows CD, it'll give you "Repair" option. That will keep your data in tact.Okay Broni so you want me to put in the windows cd to fix not reinstall? (and I thank you again for taking time to help)Yes. Reinstall over the top would be the next step.I got that cmd window to stay open long enough to SEE it said successful I can't remember what else it said but it said successful. And I can't find my windows disk right now because I hide stuff an don't remember where I put it. It said successful after you executed some COMMAND?it never let me give a cmd it just came on for a second and the message said successful ? weird i guess I hate finding thingsWho doesn't?.....LOL |

Solve : help recovering old photos of of old computer? |
Answer» I was digging thru the closet and came across an OLD computer of mine. I realized it has a couple of hundred old photos saved on it that I do not have copies of anywhere else. I am trying to transfer the photos to my new computer but I cannot get the old computer to recognize a thumb drive or the floppy drive and it has no burner. Its a really old system using win98SE. I am getting a message at start up that says "windows\system\crtdll.dll file is MISSING. I would reinstall the missing file but cannot find a win98 disk. Could this message be the cause of the floppy drive not working or not recognizing the thumb drive? Is there any other way to maybe transfer the photos without the older computer having internet SERVICE? Thanks for your HELP .Win98se does not have a driver for USB devices. Your old system will not be able to recognise your thumb drive unless you have a driver which can be installed. |
