Solve : HELP!! Keyboard, mouse issues....?

Answer»

SO my computer seems to be a little screwed up. When I use the mouse, the left CLICK OPENS properties, the right, does nothing. When in Microsoft word, the left clicker highlights everything in weird BLOCK shapes, and the right does nothing.
I can't access the file, tools, etc in the tool BAR, i can only shuffle their order.
When I type, the only repsonse I get is from the file, tools, options thingos opening.
I can't click into the "START" button, or turn the computer off, without Crl+ alt+del.
The scroller doesn't work.
Has anyone encountered this or no how to get rid of this??
Your help would be greatly appreciated.Have you checked the settings in Control Panel/Mouse ? ?
If it's a cordless try new batteries...

Solve : Can't load IIS on XP SP2?

Answer»

Running Widows xp pro sp2. When I try to load IIS after about two files load I get the message "file copy operations were canceled. setup cannot continue". I don't have the setup CD with SP2 on it because this computer came with windows loaded on it, widows is genuine and loaded with the most up to date fixes and patches. I can physically FIND all the files that are required for IIS to load in my i386 folder. I have tried making a copy of the SP2 from a Microsoft download as someone on Google SUGGESTED but still the same problem. any help would be appreciate. Thanks. hope this makes sense. nLite

I have some doubt that files you see are all that's needed to install IIS. If they were, I think you'd be able to install it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think SP2 is needed for IIS. So, whether you have SP2 or not is irrelevant. Thanks all

Solve : not bootable?

Answer»

I have a copy of windows 98 and a copy of windows 2000 they are full versions not upgrades but are not bootable how can I make these discs bootable so I can boot of them? You probably need to GO into the BIOS and change your boot order. That can be accomplished by REBOOTING your system and PRESSING the key that corresponds to the setup key before the system completely BOOTS. (Could be F8 or F10 or even ESC) Once in BIOS setup, go through the menu items until you find something called boot order. (May not say exactly this.) Then change this to have the CD be the first item listed. Be sure to SAVE this setting or else it will not keep the change you made.
I hope this all makes sense.
Let me know if you have any questions.Panda i think they are saying the CD's themselves are not bootable so this wouldn't work...
Although some versions of Win98 were not Win2K should be.

smf are these copies of the OS CD's ? ?yes they are cd's and I set my boot options to boot cd drive first the cd's themselves are not bootable I need the cds to be bootable how can I tweek them

Solve : deleted ALL of my photos! Help!?

Answer»

I had an icon on my desk top that I thought was just a short cut to windows picture gallery, so I put it in the recycling bin, but a message came up saying the recycling bin wasn't big enough so it had to delete everything, I clicked okay. But I guess the icon wasn't a short cut, now ALL of my photos are gone. Is there anything I can do to get them back? stop USING your computer and use system restore to restore back (to an earlier date that you know the PICTURES existed)System Restore won't rescue any data.

I tried the F2 and the F10 at start up. also removing all the cables and PLUGGING them back in. Also removed and replaces all ram and boards. STILL same PROBLEM.
If I try ANOTHER hard drive, won't it have a problem with the hardware? I thought each hard drive "learned" its hardware when the operating system was installed.

Solve : Missing Security tab despite turning off Simple File Sharing?

Answer»

I cannot see the SECURITY TAB I should see when I right click a folder and click
Sharing and Security. I am using Windows XP Progessional (SP2). My computer is not part of a network. I share my computer with a friend. I have got an administrative account and have created a normal user account for my friend. My aim was to restrict my friend from accessing some of my folders. However, since I cannot see the security tab I am UNABLE to do so.

I have tried the following so far but nothing has worked:
- I have Windows XP Professional (SP2)
- Its a NTFS Filesystem
- I have switched "Simple File Sharing" off
- I'm logged in as an Administrator
- I have checked the Server service (uninstalled and reinstalled
it)
- I Read on another forum to do the following:
Open Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |
Navigate to...
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\
Remove the Security tab
Set to Not Configured or Disabled.

However, I cannot see Windows Explorer under Administrative Templates\Windows Components\ in group policy.

Please help!! I've spent hours Goggling and I just keeping
getting the same advice to turning off simple file sharing.

Open Registry Editor.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and see, if you have a key Nosecuritytab
If it's there, and a value of it is "1", change it to "0"I haven't got a key Nosecuritytab in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Are you using NTFS?If you have Windows XP CD, run:
sfc /scannowI tried running sfc /scannow but it didn't WORK. Are you using NTFS?YES, I am using NTFS Filesystem Check, if security tab is present in Safe Mode.

Solve : Problem with date when receiving e-mail from hotmail?

Answer»

Every TIME I receive an EMAIL in hotmail the time is always advanced by three hours. If I send myself an email at 1:00 pm and check my email asap it will show that it was sent at 4:00 pm.

Thanks for your help Is this a new problem?
Does it happen no matter what computer you access Hotmail from? The problem occurs with Hotmail no matter which computer I use to check the mail. I sent an email at 6:28 PM and checked hotmail a few seconds later. Hotmail indicates that the mail was sent at 3:28 PM. Quote from: matunuck on January 13, 2008, 04:34:20 PM

Have you LOOKED around at all the config OPTIONS on the hotmail page?
Is there some sort of time offset available there?

I have a hotmail account, but rarely send an email from it. However, it does stamp the time correctly.
I don't remember if I ever had to set the time offset in that hotmail account - I've had it too long now.

Thanks for the info.

I went to the original set up in my Hotmail account and found that the time setting was for Pacific Coast Time and should have been set for Eastern Time.

Problem solved.Thanks for POSTING back.

Solve : No icons, no task bar, HELP!!!?

Answer»

Hi guys, new here, and need your HELP. When I restart my icons and task bar appear for a few secs, then disappear, then back, and gone again. It keeps doing this for sometimes 15 minutes, then they are gone completely. It even does this in safe mode, I am thinking it may be a software conflict, but have no idea how to correct this, i did reinstall windows, but it did no good, could I ERASE my hard drive to correct this problem, should I? I have hp pavilion dv8000 with turion64, it ALSO seems to be running in 32 bit config, not that I know very much about these things, but the letters are smaller than normal, I have ran registry clean, and search and destroy, and they all come back saying I have no problems, any suggestions before I use this thing for target practice, lol I can only use the computer from the task manager. Thanks,
Mike

It happened about 4 days ago, and I did ADD myspace INSTANT messenger recently, but deleted it when this happened, I am using windows xp media center 2005, i do not remember which kind of install I did, I do not remember it asking me. It must have been a repair install, because I still have other programs that I have added since I bought this, right?
Mike
MikeYeah, with a clean install all software would be wiped.
This could be an indicator of a virus or other malware. If you want to check whether it's clean I suggest you head over to our Computer Viruses and Spyware board and read this.

Alternately you can do a clean install of XP, this should also take care of any active viruses. Here's a guide on wiping the partition with Windows on it and installing a fresh copy. You should of course back up any files you need on that partition before proceeding with this.
You should still do a scan with up to date anti-virus after the reinstall, just to make sure you don't have any infected files on another drive.

By chance will I lose the software loaded from the factory? Ie: aol, and the others that were on it when I bought it? If it came with Windows and other software preloaded you should have received a recovery disc (or recovery partition on the computer) that is able to reset the computer to the factory condition.
If you on the other hand use a standard Microsoft XP installation disc then only Windows will be installed, nothing else. Here is a website for you to check on.

Solve : repeated disconnection?

Answer»

I'll try and keep this short and sweet....

I own a Compaq 2500 that I bought second hand. (I know...that in and of itself is a problem...but bear with me...) It uses WindowsXP.

The first half of the problem (which may in turn, be the reason for the second half) is that having bought it used, there is a complication involved that I'm not sure what to do about. Apparently, this COMPUTER was used in an office and was previously linked to another computer, the Administrator. When I tried to update to Explorer 7, I discovered that my ID code is not the same as the one registered with WINDOWS, thereby leaving me in a bit of a jam.

Is there a way to register this version with the number that's actually on my computer? I'd like to get WGA off my back...

And I don't know if this is related, but I am constantly being disconnected when USING the internet. When I try to reconnect, I get an error message telling me that the modem or other hardware is already in use. (A friend told me this might be because WGA is "phoning home"...true?) The only way I can get back online, is to unplug the USB cables, plug them in again (sometimes two or three times), and then it will work...for a while, then the process begins again.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks much. The best procedure in this instance would be to contact MS directly and explain things to them...they will probably issue you a new key.
The modem issue could or could not be associated with your installation.
You didn't mention what type of connection this is.Also, what hardware is involved in your Internet access? A router? Is the modem internal or external? You mentioned USB cables. Is your modem or router connected to your computer via USB port? It's an ADSL line and the modem is external, connected thru a USB port.

I'll try contacting MS again. I had been in contact with them before, but I couldn't explain the problem, as at that time, I didn't even know what the problem was. All I knew was that I kept getting those WGA messages at startup, and then couldn't download Explorer 7. So much to learn...

Thanks so much for the HELP.

That laptop has an Ethernet port, right? That's what I gather from: Compaq Presario 2500 - Mobile Pentium 4

I suspect you'd be better off having a modem connected to the Ethernet port rather than a USB port.I have no idea what that is....but I'll do some research and find out. Thanks, I'll give it a try. As is, it's WAY too frustrating....

Thanks again! It looks much like a telephone jack, only bigger. Also, called an RJ-45 jack or LAN port, as SHOWN in the image below:

On the above laptop, it's on back. But, it could also be on either side.

Solve : Backup won't accept file name?

Answer» RUNNING Windows XP Home ED. with Service PAC @ and keep updated autmatically. System is 6 months old with Intel Celeron 2.66 GHz processor 70+ GHz hard drive, CD/DVD and HP printer.

Want to backup my files so a few weeks ago downloaded Windows Backup . Tried to backup all personnal file today to a Dvd disc in my system D drive. Using Wizzard to do this and when I GET to the screen that asks for a file name, it will not accept any input I use for a name suchas "userfile" or "Oct-07files".

Any suggestions/ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Why don't you try placing your backup on your HDD, then burning it to your DVD. I suspect that it won't backup to your DVD drive because the size of the backup is unknown. I have run backups and placed them on my second HDD with no problems.Quote from: oldebh on October 17, 2007, 04:55:40 PM

Hi..I'm new to this forum...and i have 2 questions:

first (not too serious)

Whenever I click a link to a photo on the internet (suppose photobuket)
my firefox crashes...can anyone help?

SECOND (priority)

I play maplestory, but i heard it can occur to other games
the BSoD (blue screen of death).
Every time i quit the game maplestory, my computer shuts down and the BSoD shows up. Heres what it says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

I know the dump_wmimmc.sys comes from GameGuard, a program that blocks HACKS from entering Maplestory.

Thanks for reading..hope you guys answer!

"Okay so after reading all of this it's pretty much been determined that:

1. This is not a DRIVER issue, so the Windows BSOD error message is invalid.
2. It is not an antivirus error; your antivirus software does not need to be uninstalled.
3. Uninstalling/reinstalling will not help.
4. nProtect is clearly not accepting emails. (So I reccomend spam mailing Wizet, heh.)
5. Video cards are not the problem.
6. Maplestory itself is not the problem. (If it falters with Gunbound, too.)"Welcome to the CH forums.

Re: Second.
This is not a 'new' problem and seems to be directly linked to non-action by nProtect. Read here and here both dated mid 2006..

I sure don't have a cure for the problem.

Thanks

i have the up-to-date version for bothThere seems to be a lot of people reporting problems with dump_wmimmc.sys the driver for nProtect GameGuard, but I'm not finding much on possible solutions.
So I don't think the BSoD you're getting is invalid. It is a problem with the GameGuard driver. (Drivers aren't just for hardware.) It either a conflict with some other software you've got installed or a problem nProtect needs to fix.

Solve : ccleaner back up registry?

Answer»

I am runing XP professional VERSION 2002 service pack 2.
Yesterday I backed up registry from CCleaner. I have it saved in My Documents. I use Corel Draw X3 but now I can't open the program. I tried to uninstall it and re-install it, but I get this warning:
This patch COULD not be opened. verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package.

I tried to open the back up registry and it shows that the contents were sent back to the FOLDER, but I still can't open that program, unistall it or anything.

What do I need to do.

I have AVG anti spy, and AVG anti-virus.Try doing a system restore from a date prior to the registry backup.

Alan <>< I did that, also I went days before, still the same.
It is showing another warning that says ConfigDir is missing. I don't know what that is.

Solve : Connect VCR to Laptop using Windows Movie Maker?

Answer»

I want to connect my DVD/VCR combo to my laptop. I have Windows XP Media Center Center Edition. I connected my VCR to my laptop using a S-Video cable. I opened Windows Movie Maker, then clicked File, Capture Video. It says that a video capture device is not detected.

Can I connect my VCR to my laptop this way? Am I missing something? Nothing pops up when I plug the S-Video Cable to my laptop. Is there supposed to be a new hardware detected screen or something?I think you need a video capture card. That's probably why you're getting that message. The S-video hole in your laptop is most likely an output hole (it sends the video signal, it doesn't receive it), just like the hole in the VCR. Like SUPERDAVE said, you need a capture card.just what i was going to say. The s-video plug on the laptop is for output to televisions and projectersSo, if I buy one of these - USB TV and Video Capture Device - will it work then? I want to make sure before I pay $100-$150 that this will work. It sounds good. Tape VCR & Camcorder stuff to computer. Use computer as DVR. Is this the card? Do I have to buy an card and this?

I googled this device and it looks like it's what you need to capture video. I ALSO found that this device sells from $25 to $34. Just google it to find the best price. You do need a capture device. I've got Medi/stream, ($80.00 Office Max). It converts Vhs (ANALOG ) to digital (DVD). The software is with the capture device.Quote from: maybenever on October 18, 2007, 06:03:44 PM

Do you have a link or know the manufacturer of this product. I tried doing a search on it and couldn't find any results. I assumed it was also Media/Stream and not Medi/stream.

Anyone who may know, thank you...I have tried everything. Also besides the onboard AC97 SoundChip I have a Sound Blaster Live! Driver are loaded correctly..But at the MOMMENT I'm using the AC97 onboard..
It sounds like you're missing a sound codec...

Is the sound working in VLC?
What kind of movie files are giving you trouble? It's my DVD/Combo (2cd drive E:) that will not play movies, even thru VLC, Nero7(came w/drives) has 2 audio codecs that show up on a check..MPEG2 or MPEG4..I'm still learning about .mp3, .jpeg, .mpeg1-4, .jpg and all others...THANKS for any Help! Well VLC uses its own internal codecs so it's probably not a codec issue then.
Go to Device manager.
(Right click "my computer", select properties, select the "hardware" tab, select "Device manager")

Double click where it says "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and double click your DVD drive.
Select the "properties" tab.
Make sure "Enable digital CD audio..." is checked and that the "CD player VOLUME" SLIDER is set to high.
Okay so the setting for "enable digital sound " should be enabled, I did not know that....Thanks for the Info DP.So is your problem solved then?Wait a minute... are you now saying that the sound plays fine in VLC?Quote

I was told I did not need the 3-4 pim gray wire that runs from IDE Drive to MoBo or Card. I never hooked it ip..
These are not needed in any Windows OS since WinME...the problem is with WMP10...There is no sound from any DVD that I play in Win Ver.10 in either drive, If I use VLC I can play only in D: drive...Both drives are capable and I get sound from VLC on Drive D: but, thats it., I have no problem with CD's, play in either drive..

I ws told by one of my Instructors that I did not need the gray cable anymore either..Thanks for confirming that..

Any ideas on the DVD's..I'm using Nero codecs, besides the VLC.

HAL.DLL Missing or Corrupt

If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured
Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the CORRECT location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

that eorror i get i followed what it say at the end
but the disk door won't open i have to shut down
and turn it back on to open it real fast before it loads
so it don't work
That's why, you need Windows CD.ok when i get it broni i'll let u
now if that works ok ty for the infoYou're welcome.
BTW, if your computer configuration allows, I'd rather opt for some other OS, then ME, which is pretty crappy system.
Windows 2000, would be much better.

Solve : XP immediately logs off at log on?

Answer»

greetings. My windows XP logs off at each log on. I've attempted to start in safe mode and do a system restore. The log off loop is the same in safe mode. This is a Gateway PC, so no windows disk, just SELF created recovery disks that only give 2 options, full disk restore losing everything or partial which REQUIRES all apps be RELOADED. Does ANYONE know of anyother options? I can't get to the registry or anywhere beyond the log on screen. I really don't want to lose all the data on the hard drive. any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!Other than borrowing an XP CD to do a repair install i'm stumped...
What happened prior to this to create this condition ? ?Thanks. I have no idea what happened. It was business as usual, then it just started. research on the net indicates it could be adware or malware. Scroll Down For Logon - Logoff loop

Solve : Incomplete download.?

Answer»

Run the connection keeper and try to download Spybot S&D.I ran Connection keeper and tried to download spybot, but again download incomplete............
I have no words for this......
What do i do.........You uninstall the connection keeper program first then download and install a download MANAGER program.
You could use the link WillyW put up so if you have any problems with it he may be able to help.
Then try and download Spybot S&D using the download manager.
Once the download manager is installed you should only have to right click the Spybot link & choose to use the download manager.Someone could also e-mail her the file...subsequently, she could save it to her desktop and run it from there...just a thought.Thankyou everyone for help till now.
I have downloaded download manager from the link that WillyW gave and on clicking on its icon in the system tray appears its main window, then i clicked the spybot link and downloaded somthing ...looks like its spybot , but i dont know how to proceed , in other words how do i run it from the download manager.
Thankyou so much .
Please help.Did you download a file called spybotsd15.exe, if so then all you have to do is double click on that file to install Spybot.Thankyou for all the help so far,
Here is the result to our hardwork.
I finally was able to download spybot and then i had to follow the five step process, update process was the longest , it kept saying ''Bad check sum'', so for each component i went back and did new updates over and over again till finally all was updated, then spybot allowed me to run ''check for problem'', and now i have the results.

Thankyou again so much Fed and WillyW and others,
Im not sure where to post the results , here or in viruses forum.
Thankyou again Fed.OK since im not getting a response where to post my log here it is:

this cd that im using is a pirated one.. but i've already used it many times without error.

Oh RIGHT. Like my TV worked every night for 10 years, so why won't it come on now?

When people say things like that it ALWAYS reminds me of the mandatory advice that has to be printed on advertisements for investment products in the UK, "past performance is no guarantee of future results".

"Used it many times" could mean "scratched it many times".

You could have a hardware problem, possibly RAM related.

Also, going the illegal route could cause you problems.

New brand-name computers (DELL, HP, Gateway, etc.) come with Windows XP preloaded that has an (Original Equipment Manufacturer) OEM licence. The OEM licensing system is different to that of the retail packaged version of Windows XP. The OEM licence does not allow Windows XP to be transferred to a new computer; the retail licence does allow such a transfer. OEM copies are only licensed for use on the new computer on which they were originally installed.

Many OEM copies installed by the major manufacturers (Dell, HP, Packard Bell, etc.) use a system called System Locked Pre-Installation (SLP) that doesn't match any hardware on start-up. It looks for a special signature in the BIOS setup PROGRAM instead. If the computer's installation Windows XP has a file called oembios.bin, then it has SLP-activated OEM copy.

If a BIOS-locked copy of Windows XP is installed on a motherboard and the BIOS lock fails, the system will go through the normal Product Activation process at startup. However, note well that from March 1, 2005, the Product Key supplied on a label by the computer manufacturer, and used for the initial installation, won't be accepted for activation. A new copy of Windows XP, with a licence allowing installation on a different computer, will be needed. This means that any replacement motherboard, or upgrade to its BIOS, must be supplied by the original manufacturer in order to ensure that the BIOS lock is put into effect.

Solve : Frequent shutdowns?

Answer»

A few days ago, my computer (running Windows XP Pro) started frequently shutting down during use. The computer will start up and run FINE for about 20-30 minutes, but then the computer SHUTS off. If I try to turn it back on immediately, the computer makes sort of a whirring sound over and over and will not turn on. Waiting for about 10 minutes seems to alleviate that problem, but the CYCLE just repeats with the computer shutting down again in a short while. Any suggestions? Thanks.I'm wondering if it's your CPU.

Are you able to get into the BIOS and CHECK the CPU temp? Usually when this gets to hot, your computer will shutoff randomly like that.
You can also download SiSandra Lite: http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/It may be overheating. Did you check your computer temps? It does sound like a CPU-temp proble- - - open the case and see if your Heat-sink fan is going - - - - could be bad fan or lose connection to MOBO.....Good luck !!!!

Good luck!
this is of no help I can't show you, but I can tell you how;

Most connectors are keyed, so you can't put 'm on the wrong way.
Pin 1 is the red line.

Master/Slave CONNECTOR doesn't matter much. I believe master goes on Top, slave in the middle.
The connector furtest AWAY goes on the mainboard

FDD:

1. The red line goes on Pin 1 of the mainboard. (Inspect mainboard closely or use the manual, no excuses)
2. If you do not connect the FDD end of the cable properly, you will see the light constantly shining

HDD:

1. Keyed, same as mainboard.

CDD

1. May be keyed, pin 1 is designated on either the sticker or the back of the CD/DVD drive.

Mainboard:

1. Keyed.

If you still need more information refer to your mainboard manual. that site shows how to build one i don;t need that

Solve : IP CONFIG help?

Answer»

I have one Q/A about the ip CONFIG?

If I am say at my work computer and I am online and I go into my ip config will it tell me the IP ADRESS of that computer so I coul find it when I go to my home computer? It will give you that information, yes...whether or not you will be allowed access to that machine is a different story altogether.I am sorry this is what I ment to say?

If I want to find what my IP Adress is for my work computer I have to be at my work computer and go into my ip config.

But when I am at my work computer befor I go into my ip config do I have tobe online.

This is how I should have asked my Q/A sorry

At work on your machine from a command prompt type in ipconfig /all and hit Enter...Ok I see 2 diferant things when I use the command ipconfig or ipconfig/all

The command ipconfig/all gives me a lot more information and one thing it says is PHYSICAL ADRESS and then a string of numbers.

Then ontop of this it has IP Adress and a string of numbers.

What set of numbers WOULD I use to setup my Windows Remote Desktop the PHYSICAL ADRESS or the one that says IP ADRESS??
Thanksyou would want the ip address. The physical address is just id number of your network card or router. So don't use the physical address
I never asked this Q/A but to run Remote Desktop the computer at home is running win xp pro but my computer at work that I will be connectting to is running win ME.

As long as my computer at home is running win xp pro I know I can use it as the remote computer.

But will I be able to connect to my work computer that is running win ME or do both computers have to run win XP PRO???
thanksHave you checked with the IT people at work who have setup that network to see if you have access and how to go about it ? ?Um, your local ip address on the work machine is not going to GET you in from home. It is most likely a non routable ip address behind a firewall, meaning it can't be seen from the internet. ALSO, I don't believe remote desktop wotks with Win ME (I could be wrong). I would definitely talk to your IT people, both for instruction, and permission.Remote Desktop goes all the way back to Win98...

SourceI own my own company and it is small.
My computer at work is the only one there and I am about to put win xp pro on it.

And my home computer and work computer use DSL.
And the only Firewall I have one both is Windows Firewall.

Now if I turn off win firewall and use the IP Adress I get from my ipconfig window why would I not be able to connect to my work computer and use Remote Desktop?

Thanks
PS .....
if I need to know more just tell me what to read up on?

Solve : control + alt+ delete?

Answer»

what programs really need to stay open on this list, and how do you get the programs that you don't need to not start automatically in the first place??? Technically, at a fresh startup with nothing running and no windows open, nothing should be there.

But you should have anti-virus, various drivers, firewall, etc. that will load at startup, as well as some Windows components.

First thing you should do is go open the Windows Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and look up all of the processes there at http://www.processlibrary.com/ so that you KNOW what they all are. That way you can better judge whether or not you need them at startup.

Then you can go to Start -> Run... and type "msconfig". Under the "Startup" tab, you can select which processes you want loaded at startup.

Oh, and if you aren't sure about SOMETHING, feel free to ask. Quote from: quaxo on April 28, 2008, 12:22:58 AM

Nonsense.

No, it isn't nonsense. You mean, at start up, with no windows open, the list shown in Task Manager will be empty?

Are you talking about applications or processes?

What about winlogon.exe, svchost.exe, and taskmgr.exe itself? If there is a printer, then spoolsrv.exe will be running. Quite a few others as well.

Trust me, it can be done.

Anyway, Karen, LIKE I said... feel free to ask if you have any questions about running processes.i suggest that you download Process Quick Link 2

it PUTS a green icon next to all of your processes in task manager, which, when CLICKED takes you to a process library. it'll just save you a bit of time

Hi
I have a PC RUNNING XP. It will not boot from start up and I can not get it to go to safe mode by pushing F8.
Any suggestions.
When I turn on PC it does say to select shft f10 but this only takes me to a a Realtek screen where I have a choice of 3 boot orders.
1. PnP/BEV(BBS) Boot ordered by BIOS, if BBS BIOS present
2.ROM Disable . Network boot disabled, boot local devices
3.Int 18h Boot the devices ordered in BIOS Setup

I do not have bootable CD but I have access to the INTERNET. Can I create a bootable CD perhaps from somewhere?
You'll find just about every KIND of boot cd here.

While you're thinking of boot cd's you might want to download the Ultimate Boot Disk from this site and add it to your recovery tool kit.

Good luck.Thank Dusty
Actually had the Ultimate Boot CD but unless the CDROM drive is read it doesnt work.
My problem is I couldnt even get the CDROM drive to read. And as I cant get into change the BIOS order I had no choice but to take it to a local Disk Doctor. That way I can at least get my hard drive accesed.
Thanks anyway.

Cheers

Mmmmm - CONFUSING. If you'd mentioned the cdrom drive, and problem getting into bios, a different possible cure WOULD have been forthcoming. However your choice was the Disk Dotore.

Solve : Can't boot up old PC?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I have an old PC that my son wants to use. It's so old I don't remember any of the hardware other than I loaded XP on it some time ago and it has an AMD processor.

Anyway, when it tries to boot up I get bar lines at the bottom of the monitor (b&w) with this msg:

File missing or corrupt
/Windows/System32/Config/System
press "r" at 1st screen for repair

So I loaded the XP install disk, set the system to boot from the CD-ROM but STILL the same response. I even tried the Ultimate Windows Boot Disk (purchased on ebay) and still the same result.

I've changed the boot location to CD-ROM in all 3 attempts but with no difference.

Any idea what to do other than to us another HD?
"Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=307545
Thanks for the info, but that won't work because I cannot get past the corrupted file message.

In other words, the system will not boot off of the CD.

I think the only method left is to replace the hard drive with one of my backups on my own system and go from there or else format the hard drive and see if I can boot off the floppy when the C drive is clean.

I have the system set to boot from the CD in all 3 options - but it won't work. Are you sure the system is actually booting from the CD-ROM? Is it possible you setup for a CD-ROM boot, but aren't saving the change (so it's not effective)?
What does it say on your Windows CD ? ?
Does it have holograms all over it and say MS ? ?Yes, the changes to the boot PRIORITY are there.

No, the CD I have for XP is a special one - no hologram face. But it also won't work with a special Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows either.

I've been in the computer field since the 70's but this one has me stumped. Why would I get a hard drive error when it's booting off of a CD?Quote from: bullwinkle on APRIL 26, 2008, 10:53:40 AM

No, the CD I have for XP is a special one - no hologram face.

Are you sure your system "sees" the CD-ROM drive? Does the system BIOS see and correctly identify the CD-ROM drive?

Test the system memory. You can do this by booting a standalone memory diagnostic program from either floppy or CD-ROM drive. If you have a floppy drive, I'd try that.

See MemTest86. Follow the "Free Download" link to either the floppy:
Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.4a installable from Windows and DOS

or CD versions:
Download - Memtest86 v3.4a ISO image (zip)

Sounds to me like the CD's are not bootable.... The system doesn't have a workable floppy.

I tested the CD ROM by disconnecting the HD. It wouldn't read the CD - and I know that the CD is bootable. So the ROM drive isn't working.

So I can't run the memory test until I get a drive working. I'm thinking of subbing my backup HD and trying to boot from there.

This can be tested by DLoading and creating the MemTest CD as suggested above...if that one runs then the CD's you have are not built corrrectly and or are bootleg copies of Windows...Quote from: bullwinkle on April 25, 2008, 01:33:58 PM
Hi Guys,

an old PC that my son wants to use. It's so old I don't remember any of the hardware [/i]

PC problems are caused by enviromental and human factors like:
heat, dust, magnetism, power supply problems, static electricity, human error(like spilled drinks or a buildup of dust and pollen). Have you been storing this old PC in a basement or attic? Have you tried to blow it out?

I've been in the computer field since the 70's but this one has me stumped. Why would I get a hard drive error when it's booting off of a CD?
If you leave a PC turned off for a long period of time you can have serious problems. A friend of mine left a computer off for an entire summer. At the beginning of the new school term, the PC would'nt boot. After a complete examination we DISCOVERED that the boot record at the begining of the HD had become corrupted. PCs, like old cars, need to be started up from time to time just to insure their health.1. Hard Drive Substitution. Attempting to "boot" a Windows XP operating system from a hard drive built for a different computer system normally isn't successful. The Windows XP operating system is closely tied to the hardware and should be built on the system it is to run on.

Booting a hard drive with DOS, MS-DOS, or a Windows 9x/ME operating system should work as long as suitable drivers for the new hardware are available.

That being said, I do not recommend this course. Troubleshoot and fix the target computer system.

2. CD-ROM Drive. Use the CMOS setup utility to verify the CD-ROM drive is detected and correctly identified by the system BIOS during startup. If it isn't detected by the BIOS, you won't be able to access the drive until you correct the underlying problem. If the BIOS doesn't see it, (with power off and plug removed from wall) check the IDE master/slave/single jumper(s) on the drive, reseat the data cable at both ends, and reseat it's power connector.

3. Floppy Drive. While you're in the CMOS setup utility, verify the floppy drive is ENABLED and configured correctly.

4. Memory. Test the system memory. If you have multiple memory modules, you should start by testing each one individually, then testing them together. Ensure the connectors look good and reseat the memory module prior to testing to ensure it has good contact. Take appropriate Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) precautions when working with electrical components.

You get into the BIOS by pressing either F2 or DEL on Optiflex. I've read that it can be either key, depending on the Optiflex model, so look when you turn on your computer, the first SCREEN you see should tell you.dell optiflex 260F2 for that model.

Solve : ScanDisk could not continue?

Answer»

My system crashed when it rebooted and ran ScanDisk it said that it found a file NAME that was to long and it could not repair it and that I should run ScanDisk from WINDOWS. I tried to do so and GOT the message " ScanDisk could not continue because your computer does not have enough available memory..." So I went to msconfig unchecked "normal start up" and checked "selective startup" and unchecked "load start up group Items" clicked on apply
rebooted and tried again. Same result. Even tried in SafeMode. Same result.
I have 768 MB of memory. How can I get it to runWhat Windows version is it?Windows 98SeHow big is your hard drive? How much of it is full? How big is your swapfile?

200G
with 98se partiton 147 g with 42g used
currently swapfile is at 252m
Posting exact scandisk error about long file name would be helpful.
It should say something about a cluster where offending file(s) is located.Travel to bootdisk.com and grab the Win98SE custom BOOT file...grab the one with CDRom support.
Then use that file to create a bootable FLOPPY...
Boot to the floppy and run Scandisk from there...

Solve : re-installing windows XP?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I had a Compaq desktop with windows XP for ROUGHLY five years when I gave it to my dad a few months ago. It was never the best computer becasue it didn't have a lot of memory and such, but it always worked decently well for me albeit a bit slow. Before giving it to my dad I reinstalled windows using the recovery disk that came with it so he would have a clean SLATE to work off from.

Within days of having it, he said he would often get the "page cannot be displayed" page when surfing the web. He uses dial up msn by the way, which is what I also used for the last couple years. He said it was happening more and more, and the last time I went on it I couldn't get any web pages to come up, despite it saying that I was connected to the internet.

The actual computer seems to be working fine, it boots up and shuts down just fine, opens any computer (ie non internet) only functions just fine, but I just can't get it to do anything online. I am quite certain I used this recovery disk to reinstall at least once when I owned the computer and have never had any problems like this. I have no idea what to do.

My only thought was that his phone cord was damaged and when I tried going online the other day I had to fiddle with the cord and tape it into the plug before I could finally get a dialtone to get online. I have been TOLD by several computer people that this isn't the case, but is it at all possible that the cord being damaged gave it enough connection to connect to the internet but not enough to actually do anything?

Did I do something wrong when reinstalling windows? Is there some setting I should change? I already checked the firewall and that seems fine. I can't figure out why reinstalling windows would make it impossible to be online, I am in need of any possible causes for this becasue my dad gave me money for this computer and is getting kind of MAD that it isn't doing him any good. Thanks!I'd bring the computer to someones house who has high speed internet DSL or Broadband and see if it behaves the same. Also while connected to High Speed do all the MS Critical Updates and make sure that it has an up to date antivirus. The restore CD probably came with a 90 day trial of Norton AV.

As far as the phone cord goes, I also agree that it is likely not the cord, but since it is damaged and cords are cheap to replace, its best to eliminate that from the problems equation.

If you see it behaving itself on high speed and not dial up then we have a direction to go in with that, and if it is misbehaving with high speed, then the system definately has an issue of some sort with the browser.

Solve : Had to repair XP - new problems?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

Below I have been posting my problems in installing nVidia drivers for the 8800GT card.

Yesterday I finally broke through with success after a week of working on it.

So...last night I decided to use Paragon Backup software to copy my C: drive to my D: drive in case I had future problems.

This morning I couldn't boot up.

After attempting several fixes, I finally decided that I had to do an XP repair.

Now everything is semi-operational EXCEPT

1. I do not have the permission to access Add/Delete Programs, or the Device Manager

2. Installation of sp2 failed. Don't know why.

3. Some applications work, others are corrupted or missing a FILE.

To make matters worse, my 2nd computer also failed this morning - an error in the explorer.exe file so I'm doing an XP repair of that one too.

What a nightmare!Just a SHOT. Did you try system restore? What technique did you use to repair XP ? ?
Here's the one i use

The failed installation of SP2 can be dealt with as well.... Did you have your protection apps already installed when doing the SP2 install ? ?
If so try turning them all off after disconnecting from the web and see if that helps.I couldn't restore because I didn't have a Windows screen.

I don't know what protection apps are.

After repairing my wife's PC (the second one I mentioned), everything now is fine. Her video card drivers were loaded, email came up OK, etc.

My system on the other hand is a mess. Blue screen, msn email that won't recognize my password, apps that fail because of some internal problem, and I can't load the drivers for my video card because it won't let me remove the current ones.

No "New Hardware Found" window either.Do you have a Windows XP CD with shiny holograms all over it that says Microsoft ? ?
It sounds like you will need one...No, I have the $5 special CD.

At least it worked in fixing my wife's PC.

I could call a computer repair place, but the thought of paying $100+ only to have them tell me that I need to reformat and start over is depressing.

Meanwhile this PC supports my business, so I need a solution soon.

I did try to go into DOS and attempt a restore but it only TOOK me back to after the DISASTER happened, not before. You may be able to find a good deal on Win2K....basically XP without the eye-candy....
Most stable version of Windows ever released and i still run it on 2 machines.
If anyone in the family is a student buy it thru the Campus Bookstore...you qualify for a substantial savings.
They will probably have to order it.

Good Luck. Are you suggesting that Win 2000 is cheaper or better than XP?

Does that mean a complete reformat is in order?Update -

I was able to restore to May 1st - still in deep trouble, but now at least I get an immediate response from mouse clicks.

Still apps are missing files, etc. I've ordered a new HD to do a new install next week.

But what bothers me is why can't I access Device Manager, Add/Remove Programs, or even the Search function?

Does anyone know?

Can I do a repair on my repair?Quote from: bullwinkle on May 02, 2008, 10:35:36 AM

Are you suggesting that Win 2000 is cheaper or better than XP?

Does that mean a complete reformat is in order?

It's both.
Yes you would be doing a format and a clean install...

Without knowing what's on that XP CD it's difficult to advise any further so i'm out of ideas.
You could try the link i provided above for a repair install.
Sorry.

Solve : duplicate Windows System files on partition 'L', System on 'C'?

Answer»

I'm not even sure what to search for on this one nor if this is the correct SECTION to post it but here's my situation.
I installed a 250 GB WD internal hard drive, formatted in NTFS, split it into 2 partitions; partition 1 = 32.93 GB / 2 = 199.95 GB. My possible problem is that I ran my OEM Windows XP Home install CD twice; once with install LOCATION to drive 'L:', which is listed in 'ADMINISTRATIVE Tools/Computer management/Disk Managment' as "Logical Drive" on the 2nd partition / and once with the install location to drive 'C:', which is listed in 'Administrative Tools/Computer management/Disk Managment' as being "System" drive.
My machine has experienced some intermittant performance problems recently and I suspect having my operating system files on 2 separate partitions could possibly be a factor. Am I right? Can I delete or uninstall 1 set of these files without affecting the operating system and how? And which set of files should I delete - the files on 'L:' 'Logical Drive', or on 'C:' System drive?
Files on Drive 'L:' included 'Windows', 'Program Files', and 'Documents and Settings', but the contents are not identical to the same files on Drive 'C:' Some files are present on 'C:' and not on 'L:' and vise-versa. That's why I am afraid this is more complicated than just deleting all operating system files on 1 of the drives.

Also recently I ran my OEM XP disk in order to try to repair DAMAGED / missing files after running virus removal software, and now when I start-up in safe mode it gives me an option of signing in as "Administrator" or 'My Name as entered before running repair via XP disk', both of which have administrative privelidges. Isn't this abnormal to have 2 administrators?
Thanks for any help!
Mike

Solve : Activex Controls?

Answer»

There are a couple of "adult style"websites that I would like to visit but they REQUIRE me to d/l their ActiveX control first. I am a newbie to computer security programs but I have done enough reading to know that there is a good likelyhood that an unwanted program would be attached to their activex control.

Please don't judge me too harshly, but I would not mind taking a small risk of clicking on their activex d/l as long as I could reduce it to as small as possible.

My system is an e-machine with XP home. I use the IE browser.

I have the following security:
1. Norton IS 2008 which I bought
2. Spyblaster 4.0 which I d/l for free a few DAYS ago
3. ESET online scanner the free version

I ran a scan with all three a few days ago and found no problems.

I also recently d/l Adobe Flash Player 9 Activex

I guess that my questions are:
1. Should I d/l some additional security programs first?
2. If one of my security programs detect a dangerous add on program will it block installation of the complete activex control and thus entry to the websites or just the dangerous, unwanted part?
3. Should I not take the risk, no matter how small?
4. Are these security systems compatible with each other?

Thanks,
Mark

Use Firefox. I doesn't use ActiveX.Thank you very much Broni. I'll read up on Foxfire.Firefox...Right. I saw that as soon as I POSTED it.

Anyways, I installed Firefox and went to the websites. A message come up requiring that I d/l their activex control. I did not of course. I had to do a Ctlrl-Alt-Delete to get out of the situation.

So if I were to d/l their activex controls and Spyblaster found a malicious program on it then the Activex control itself would be blocked from being d/l or just the malicious part?I don't know, why that site asked you to download ActiveX, since Firefox doesn't use it.
I'd never allow ActiveX from a site like that. Thanks for the advice. I'll take it!Hi Broni,

I cannot seem to get Yahoo mail to open today. I wonder if it is related to clicking on opening those suspicious websites yesterday with Firefox. I was able to open it yesterday using Firefox so I don't think it is that.

Solve : Windows XP keeps rebooting..cant do anything!!!?

Answer»

O/S Windows XP Pro. BIOS Version K7VM4 BIOS P2.10. AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 512 mb.
After a power cut had to run the repair with xp disc. all went well then went to Microsoft for updates, installing SP2 (nightmare) got a couple of error messages not too concerned as all to do with outlook which I dont use. Now the PC keeps shutting down and rebooting. Tried to start up in safe mode (f8) but still getting black screen with "safe mode" in the 4 corners of screen? the goes black again and reboots. If I leave it on it just keeps hanging and rebooting. After SP2 downloading got error 0x8007007f faled to load c\windows\system32\catsrv.dll. I googled this but then had to go to work. my daughter tried to reboot to disk to do the repair again and it was letting her, then she said it just went off.. starting to reboot again on and off....I switched it on this morning and its doing the same, black screen, windows xp logo.. hen hangs and reboots.. can get to f8 but doesnt make any difference which mode its booted in, and also i saw a error screen pop up really fast.. took me six attempts just to read something about VIRTUAL memory? cant catch it all as its too quick. What can I do to resolve this, its really doing my head in!! The PC is 4 years old, i would really like to dump it andmaybe look at gettin another but the kids have got too much data (which they havent backed up) on it..... any help would be appreciated. My house is dirty as I have spent all my time tring to resolve this nightmare .................. A multitude of issues can present themselves after a "power cut" or any power issues for that matter. The best way to troubleshoot these things are to eliminate what it might be...power supply (try another one), RAM (if you have more than 1 stick pull one out), swap out the hard drive if you have another) etc. Start with the big components and work your way down to the smallest. I know that everyone doesn't have all this stuff

Alan <>< Hi thanx for the reply. I came in from work last night, having left thepc on with the recovery xp running..my daughter was supposedly watching it. anyway "THERE IS NO POWER TO MY TOWER" WOT has happened?Have checked CABLES etc swapped them over etc no joy..help me pls....Start here No power or computer does not turn on unless someone has a better idea.none of these are relevant there is power going to vdu, printer etc the tower is dead.. all that the thread refers to are faulty connections etc. its the tower itself not the connections, I dont know what to do...help me pls somebody it sounds like you power supply is bad. you have a power supply unit on the tower and it could have gone bad-if theres any status indicators on the tower [blinking/solid row of lights on the back or front panel of the tower], it will be helpful to isolate the prob as whether it is a real "no power" to a "no boot" issue. no light at all means no power, better check the power supply + mobo. if blinking lights are evident, then theres still hope. No blinking lights no blinking anything......... Iam going to open this baby up 2day and start eliminating...like taking memory sticks out one by one, checking csu etc...but I dont hold out much hope...might buy a portable hard drive and try to save my info but I only know one person with a desktop PC and they live 20 miles away is this a good idea??Borrow a known working PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...
This will tell you if you need to buy a new PSU.
