Solve : Lost Profile Help needed?

Answer»

OK I'm not very good with computers, I'm the first to admit that. Last NIGHT while my computer was shutting down it lost power, some grid failure or other the whole lost power. I've turned it on this morning and it said my profile had not loaded correctly. Which BASICALLY means its loaded a temporary one. Currently all my files are gone, 10 years worth of pictures, home work, reports etc. I have tried some basic attempts to relocate the profile but I don't have any more experience then the classic off again on again thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there any CHANCE of file recovery?

Cheers, Matt

Intel core2 duoClick start then click Computer. Click on the C drive and then choose Users. Is your account still there? The account was still there, it had alledgedly logged me into but all my files and settings were gone. I've since reloaded the computer again. Logged in as before and the profile has come in correct this time and faster than ever. I have no idea what happened but it seems to have righted itself, which is a relief, but is RATHER annoying seeing as I've spent the last three hours desperately looking for back-up discs and searching internet help sites. Thanks for replying and I'm sorry that I've wasted your time. This website has been really helpful though so I will definately be coming back in the event of FUTURE problems.

Cheers, MattNow would be the time to develop a solid backup strategy...

Solve : Can't Open Movies?

Answer»

Made a short VIDEO and uploaded into My Picture. I can't preview or see it. Keep getting a message that says Windows can't find PATH, file or device. Did the web search which took me to LCB download, but that wouldn't work because "I don't have permission". I have done movies before and never had this problem. Any suggestions? Thanks. More info NEEDED.
Movie players and formats have problems.
How did you make the movie? In what format?
Are you trying to copy a file that has copy protection?
(We can't help with hacking.)

Here is a link to a media player that is free and works good.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/The "movie" is a video I made on my digital camera. The problem was with OnLine Armor blocking access to files needed to see the movie. I had to uninstall OLA because for some reason it would not work. When I rebooted my computer I got a message from OLA saying it had blocked access to certain files/programs I needed. However, when I told it to allow these files/programs it didn't respond. I will reinstall OLA and see it it will work.

Solve : system restore destroys free space?

Answer» LAST night I had 16 gigabytes free on my computer.I did System Restore because something minor wasn't working right. After the system restore was done, it had 13 gigabytes free. I was like, what the heck? So I did system restore again, and it came up with 9 gigabytes. That's half my free space gone! I did system restore one more time to try to go all the way back to last month, and now it has 6 gigabytes left!!!!!!!!!! Two thirds of my free space is gone!!!!!!!!!!! Why?

I have windows xp, file system NTFS

Thanks in advance for the assistance.Define "system restore" (EXACTLY what are you doing)?Hi, thanks for the reply.

I go to Start Menu-->Help and Support-->System Restore.

Any other INFORMATION you NEED, let me know.

Thanks again for the reply.Okay. Have you emptied the recycle bin and the temp folder?Hi Allan. I have emptied the recyle bin and temp folder.Okay. Please do the following:

1) Either use "Disk Cleanup" and delete all but the current restore point OR disable System Restore (all restore points will be deleted immediately). Then empty the recycle bin and see how much free space you have. You can re-enable it immediately afterward.

2) If STILL a problem, download and run treesize to see where the space is being used (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml)

By the way, you might want to start using disk imaging software on a regular basis. It is more reliable, more comprehensive, and better than system restore.I run XP. I just moved the Control Panel-->System-->System Restore tab from the highest it could go all the way down to 1%, restarted my copmuter, and nothign changed. It's still at 6 GB....... :-(

Solve : Windows XP debilitatingly slow?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my two-year-old customized system. I do have some limited amateurish experience with Windows - whatever has been necessary for me to enjoy casual PC gaming and some minor troubleshooting through the years. This is by far the biggest problem I've had to face. I apologize if any of this is irrelevant info, I'm not sure what will help and what won't. Thanks in advance for any help.

Here are my system specs (my problem is outlined below):
Windows XP Home SP3
ASUS DVD/CD-R
ASRock Wifi-Motherboard SLI ATX form-factor
AMD Athlon X2 64-BIT capable dual-core processor
4 GB Ram
NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ - 512MB
600 GB Hard drive (~55% free space)
Antec Powersupply

Everything was running fine and dandy, no problems whatsoever until 2 days ago. I said earlier that I've troubleshooted a teensy bit, however it's never been for this system. It hasn't demanded anything until now. I just got a new software game that I was excited to install so I put it in my DVD drive. Before installing I wanted to do a little house-cleaning with my system so I allowed Windows to Update and I downloaded a new version of AVG's free anti-virus software from CNET.com (a free version 2011). I had an older version (version "Free 8.0") which had expired, which I did not uninstall. After the download completed, I allowed it to install which is when I started to notice some slowness. It wasn't much slower than normal - just a little.

When the software said it was finished I tried to enter its interface to customize my virus-protection. When I tried right-clicking on the program in the system tray, no commands would respond except for the "Scan Computer" command. The program also wouldn't respond when I tried to interact with it through the Start menu. I noticed the installation had automatically uninstalled the version 8.0. Irritated by the lack of response by the program, I just wanted to get to my game so I opened up My Computer and tried to click on the DVD icon to install it. By this point my system became what it is right now: ridiculously slow... as in opening Calculator took 4 minutes. I got a Blue Screen of Death somewhere around this time too, something my system has never seen before. Unfortunately the BSOD disappeared before I thought of writing down what it said. The computer also crashed and still crashes willy-nilly.

At first I was convinced it was a virus or malware or something so I downloaded Windows Defender off of Microsoft's website and completed a scan but nothing was detected. I did a system restore to a day before this happened but it didn't help. My internet browsing remains mostly unaffected once I get the program running. My screensaver which uses 3D rendering also remains unaffected. Now I'm thinking this is a RAM issue, MAYBE? (By the way, I just tried calling up Task Manager and then shutting down. They took 11 minutes and 40 minutes respectively.)

At this point I haven't been able to DeFrag because the program freezes (but not my whole system) and stops responding according to Task Manager. Also doing basically anything that uses Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer like "My Computer and Task Manager") ceases to function as soon as I call it up. I've gone into both "SafeMode" and "SafeMode with Networking" and tried using Windows Explorer programs but the metaphorical molasses has spilled onto them too!

Does anyone have any ideas about how I can FIX or at least diagnose what's going on here? I'm all out of my amateur tricks.

Thanks in advance.Quote

Next time it's slow, take a look at the processes running in task manager and see if any of them are using up a lot of CPU.

Is your HDD activity light on constantly? There is a practical way to trouble shoot your problem.
To do this, you must have another good working HDD. It can be smaller, even an older model. Let me know if you want to hear more about this sort of diagnostic method.
YES, I noticed you did a system restore. And yes I know you said Windows Explorer is slow. Boot to Safe Mode mode and if AVG is still there, uninstall it.Sorry for the long period between post and reply.

Dahlarbear: I booted to Safe Mode and AVG 8.0 (the older version that I had) was there. I tried uninstalling it through its uninstaller, through the Add/Remove window, and by going to AVG's website where they had last-resort uninstalling software to download. Nothing worked - AVG 8.0 is still on my system. Attempting to uninstall it makes it say "Installation failed!" Under the details button it says this -

Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "D:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"
@AvgErrorCode_0x0020
Geek-9pm: Unfortunately I don't have another HDD except for my two laptops. Thank you though.

Linux711: My HDD activity light is almost never on except for occasional flickers every minute or so. I've looked at the processes running in Task Manager when it's slow but strangely no CPU is being used and I haven't noticed any processes in the list that are out of the ordinary or that are using an exorbitant amount of memory.

Things have changed in the last week. My computer is no longer nearly as slow and I can open almost any program and it doesn't sweat. The only thing is that my system keeps crashing after about 1 hour or when I'm playing a game for 10 minutes. I always get a BSOD. I managed to write down what the BSOD said:
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area
I looked this up online. I haven't recently installed any drivers that I'm aware. Could my memory be faulty?

Thanks everyone for your help so far!

DLoad install and run SpeedFan...
Take 2 readings and post them here...1 under normal usage and 1 under heavy gaming.Patio: Interesting... I downloaded SpeedFan and ran it. You'll have to forgive me if I'm not doing this right as I've never used a program like this before...

Quote
Take 2 readings and post them here...1 under normal usage and 1 under heavy gaming.

The way I'm understanding this, you mean I look at the "Charts" tab on the SpeedFan interface and report what I see visually when I ask SpeedFan to "Analyze Temperatures" of "CPU" and "System". Under those assumptions, here is what I found---

When idle the CPU was approximately 74 (I'm assuming that means degrees) and System was 36.
When I left SpeedFan running while I ran one of my most intensive games CPU was 97-100 and System was about the same at 36-42.

I purchased my computer case thinking it was very attuned to cooling. It has 5 fans although SpeedFan tells me only my CPU fan is running. I can hear all the fans going right now and at all times however...

A few days ago I opened up my case and tried blowing out the dust with canned air. Maybe I'm imagining it but I think my system ran a little longer before crashing. This was the first time I cleaned out the inside since I assembled the thing 2 years ago...

I'll try moving my system out from under my desk and see if I notice any difference.

The posts so far are most appreciated.I think I understand SpeedFan better in the 20 min since I posted. Under the "Readings" tab, it has the burning up logo next to the GPU, CPU, AUX, TEMP, and both COREs. When the CPU is running around 50%, the temps are like those I stated in the previous post. When the CPU is running over 60% its temp is around 106 or 107 Celsius.

A quick look online tells me that my Athlon processor wasn't made to handle over 90 Celsius.

Unless this is a rabbit hole, I think this is the problem - it makes total sense to me. Thank you Patio. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? The SpeedFan FAQ is hard for me to understand on how to adjust fan speeds.

Solve : Command prompt to operate functions inside of other programs?

Answer»

I'm trying to write a program through notepad that will play a video through windows movie player and at the same time record the person watching the video through my webcam. It seems simple in concept but in reality its proving to be impossible. i have read countless forums and different websites but none of them seem to cover my topic. this is how far i have gotten

{
start/max lws /quickcapture

start/max wmplayer "C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\My Documents\My Videos\LOGITECH Webcam\video 4.wmv" /fullscreen
pause
}

lws is my logitech webcam but now that i got it to open i dont know how to run the start and stop RECORDING functions
failed attempts
/record
/startrecording
/start capturing
/capture
and many more variations.
Does anyone know how to accomplish accesing functions inside of other programs through the command prompt?
please help
thanks Joe
Why the curly brackets? Have you studied batch syntax at all? What webcam software are you using?

Does your webcam software have a key combonation to start the capture?1)Curly brackets aren't used in my code just in the explanation.

2)i am self taught through the c++ training web site this web site and about a dozen OTHERS.(clearly im not educated on the subject)

3)The webcam software im using is "logitech Webcam C200" but i'm hoping for a simple command that if i change webcams in the future i can just change that line of code.

4)I looked under all the help web sites and even called logitech to get a short key or key combination to start capturing or recording but they were not helpful. (there may be i just cant find where that might be written)

i appreciate your help and responses in advance thank you
Ok i found the keys to start and stop recording ......the letter v and s were underlined so it is ALT+V to start recording and ALT +S to stop recording.

How do i enter those commands (also with a time delay) into the command prompt using windows xp notepad?Type this into notepad and save as .vbs:

Code: [Select]Dim wsh
Set wsh = CreateObject("wscript.shell")
wsh.Run "lws /quickcapture", 3, false
wsh.Run "wmplayer C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\My Documents\My Videos\Logitech Webcam\video 4.wmv /fullscreen", 3, false
wscript.sleep 5000
wsh.sendkeys "(%v)"
wscript.sleep [insert length of vid in miliseconds]
wsh.sendkeys "(%s)"
Set wsh = Nothing
A few changes:
Code: [Select]Dim wsh
Set wsh = CreateObject("wscript.shell")
wsh.Run "lws /quickcapture", 3, false
wscript.sleep 3000
wsh.sendkeys "%v"
wsh.Run "wmplayer C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\My Documents\My Videos\Logitech Webcam\video 4.wmv /fullscreen", 3, true
wscript.sleep 2000
wsh.sendkeys "%s"
Set wsh = Nothing
Ok looks good but im running into problems. im gonna run some variations first before i ask the next questions but the script does NOT know which screen to access to send the keys.

also for my education im curious why the lines

, 3, false
, 3, true

are needed and what they do?Ok i tried a number of different things and i cannot direct the send keys command to the proper window.

also i changed the code and made 1 .bat file and 1 .vbs file

the code "hope.vbs" reads as follows

Dim wsh
Set wsh = CreateObject("wscript.shell")
wsh.Run "lws /quickcapture"
wscript.sleep 3000
wsh.sendkeys "%v"
wscript.sleep 10000
wsh.sendkeys "%s"
Set wsh = Nothing

and the code "final1.bat" reads as follows

start/max wmplayer "C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\My Documents\My Videos\Logitech Webcam\video 4.wmv" /fullscreen

start/max hope.vbs

pause

So my current question is how do i direct the sendkeys to the proper window? At the moment i need to click on the proper window and then it will work properly but its currently pressing the keys in the mydocuments folder.

note: if there is a setting to bring this window on top of all others i can NOT use it because the webcam has got to run hidden underneath wmplayer.

Please advise. thank you

Yes there is a setting for that. I understand that the webcam has to be run under wmplayer, but why can't you have the webcam start on top and then run wmplayer on top of that. Sure you are probably going to see the webcam start up for a little, but I am afraid that this is the only option.

There is a microsoft article discussing the different window settings here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d5fk67ky(VS.85).aspx

Solve : XP: can't boot at all: nor enter safe mode etc. can only enter (DOS?) setup menu?

Answer»

Hi,

Problem started with comp INSISTING that MOZILLA Firefox was running. Checked in task MANAGER: not running. Uninstalled and reinstalled MF. Could never use MF again.

Then, started to get "UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME" when starting up. Message became more common, and recently 3-5 attempts were required every time for successful boot.

Last night was unable to access emails, and many websites did not give full access. Notes started appearing whenever I tried accessing these www's, but I forget what they said. Basically indicated the comp was very unhappy.

Tried booting today and DOS(?) message changed from UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME to telling that I needed to run a disc check. DSCCHK/ F (?) something like that.

Now it will not boot even that far: the screen flashes DELL in very large font, with F2 for setup and F12 for boot menu. After this, the screen goes blank except for curser at top left for 2 seconds, then goes completely blank.

Tried to use CD-ROM to boot; no joy.

?

Cheers.Change the boot order in the BIOS to CDROM 1st then HDD via setup...
Then boot to the Recovery Console and at the prompt type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...

NOTE: There is a space between chkdsk and the /r switch...
Let it run to completion...do NOT interrupt it.Hi Patio and thank you for your fast reply.

I have done what you suggested by changing the boot order.

Then I tried rebooting several times. First of all a message "PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD..." appears. Then one of TWO things happens:

- it seems that if I am not quick enough to press a key nothing more happens. The CD itself sounds to STOP spinning after 5 seconds and the message remains on the screen.

- if I am not so slow at pressing a key it goes a stage further: a message flashes "setup is inspecting comp's hardware configuration"(?). The screen goes blank and the CD itself sounds to stop spinning after 5 seconds.

Also, will it be obvious what the recovery console is when I get there? I am out of my depth using computers in anything other than Windows.

It's bedtime in the part of the world I live in, so I will sign on tomorrow.

Regards,

Dave

Solve : .NET Framework problem?

Answer»

Hi guys, so I wanted to uninstall .net framework 2.0 and then reinstall it again, so I downloaded Windows install cleanup.
I uninstalled .net framework 2.0 sp2 which I assumed was the right one. Then i downloaded the .net framework 2.0 redistributable and tried to install it, but it said "setup cannot continue because this version of the .net framework is incompatible"
So I FIGURED I had to uninstall all versions except 1.1
Well I did that, but now I'm not sure what versions I need and in what order.
Have I totally screwed my computer lol?
Any help WOULD be much appreciated.

Oh, and I tried to DOWNLOAD Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web INSTALLER) thinking it would install the versions I needed for me, but it came up with "Same or higher version of .NET Framework 4 has already been installed on this computer.".NET Framework versions are independent. It's not like one version is an upgrade of another one.
.NET Framework is not a "must have" component.
You need some particular version only, if some PROGRAM asks for it.

You can use this tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx to remove all versions and....wait until something demands any .NET Framework.Quote from: Broni on October 30, 2010, 12:58:50 PM

Thank you very much, I noticed this doesn't remove 4.0.
Why would I get the error message I posted earlier if I had removed 4.0.
Did I miss some 4.0 files or something

Edit: It worked great, CCC demanded version 2.0 on startup, so I downloaded it.
Problem solved as far as I can see
Thanks again.You're welcome

Solve : Microsoft XPS?

Answer»

The Microsoft XPS printer recently appeared on my system, not SURE why. However when I prodice an .xps document and try to open it , Mozella Firefox opens and seems not to know what to do with it.
I have tried to download xps READER but I keep getting told that Microsoft .net 3.0 already exists as a newer version.
I am using Windows XP Service pack 3.
Any suggestions?Essentially, XPS files are Microsoft's own document format, that they hope will rival Adobe's PDF format. I think XPS viewer assumes that the default browser is Internet Explorer, but it sounds like you have made Firefox your default. You could try this: In Firefox, install the IETab extension then configure it to open XPS files from Tools->IETab options. They then open in an IE tab WITHIN Firefox without having to switch browser. But honestly, if you are just noodling around with XPS files, personally, I would just forget about them unless you have some special reason that means you have to work with them.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/92382/

Or just right click any XPS file and CHOOSE "Open with..." then select XPS Viewer if it is visible or browse for Internet Explorer then check "Always open this TYPE of file with this program" then click OK

If you want to fool around with XPS documents, you may want to download the Microsoft set of sample XPS documents from here (Winzip self-extractor, contains 354 files!)

Solve : Computer shuts down at certain tasks??

Answer»

So the other day I tried to do a disk CLEANUP, and as it was going through when it got to a certain point it immediatly turned off my computer and started it back up. It didn't give any warnings or such.

When I used CCleaner, it worked fine.

Now it just did it with a BATCH file I'm using to install something. It shut it off randomly in the middle.

Why? How can I fix.

Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop: http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe

Double-click VEW.exe then under Select log to query, select:
Application
System

Under Select type to list, select:

Click the radio button for Number of events
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 BOX
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will OPEN with the output log.

In Notepad, click Edit > Select all then Edit > Copy
Reply to this post, click in the reply window and press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the log.

Solve : how prevent users from deleting or saving files?

Answer»

I want to place one stand alone computer in a public area that people can use to look for and view photographs. MS ACCESS, completely meun driven, will be the MEANS to locate and display thumbnail with a button to display a full sized photo. IrfanView will be the program to display the photos. In doing so, I do not want anyone to be able to do anything else, such as save or delete. Changing file property to read only does not prevent a deletion for HAPPENING. There is a program called DeepFreeze that will restore the computer to a certain state everytime it's rebooted. It won't prevent them from saving/deleting, but when there is a problem you can just reboot to restore the state.Another alternative, if you want to go with FREE utilities, is Microsoft's own SteadyState:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=d077a52d-93e9-4b02-bd95-9d770ccdb431&displaylang=en

Although SteadyState is being discontinued, it should work just fine for your purposes...You could use permissions to prevent them from deleting, ASSUMING you're using NTFS as the filesystem.Sid - your idea is probably the best one but I will try Killer255s idea also. When I tried to schedule the task a system ERROR resulted when I clicked the finish button with msg "Unable to establish existance of account specified". So one problem solved now I need to work on the other

Solve : HELP! RAW FILE SYSTEM ON USB DRIVE?

Answer»

i use an alba usb mp3 player, i tried to format it, but it keeps on tellin me the file system is raw, then when i use the /Fs: switch, it displays "0mb,cannot caluate NUMBER of sectors". whn u click on the drive,it does not open ,u can't copy files or remove files?does anyone know d way around this?
You need to repartition the USB drive. Use Disk Management to repartition it

I'm assuming you're using XP, as you didn't provide much info.Quote from: reddevilggg on October 29, 2010, 05:50:02 AM

You need to repartition the USB drive. Use Disk Management to repartition it

Flash drives, and any removable media drive, cannot be partitioned by windows, unless you manually flip a bit that says that the device is removable. (making it a "fixed" disk, as far as the computer is concerned.

In this case it doesn't matter, sounds like the flash memory has failed in a critical area preventing the drive from being formatted (which under normal circumstances is what would be required).
To BC, are you saying this would not work?

- Go to My Computer, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
- Go to Storage > Disk Managment group on the left, and then right click on your USB drive on the right.
- Then remove the RAW patition and then create a new one as FAT.

When my flash stick failed and went to RAW, these are the steps i followed to corect it. Don't know if an MP3 USB is different but i assume not.Quote from: reddevilggg on October 29, 2010, 06:12:39 AM
To BC, are you saying this would not work?
Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying... or more precisely, I'm saying SOMETHING like that wouldn't work under normal circumstances. I just tried with all of the flash drives I have available (6, with 5 different brands). Every single one of them has the "Delete Volume" option disabled on the right-click menu.

Quote
Don't know if an MP3 USB is different but i assume not.
Clearly there is something exceptional about your computers configuration or the flash drive you used, since not a single one of mine even has that option enabled. My MP3 player doesn't even show up as a drive, it's some weird esoteric thing (but not nearly as bad as the iPod, thankfully).

Fortunately, the limitation is purely "voluntary" in that the devices have a bit set to indicate they are removable; as long as that bit is set by the device, windows will treat it exactly as it would a floppy disk; (go ahead and try to partition a floppy disk, it's physically impossible). Of course, some flash drives will actually appear as two drives, often a CD-ROM drive to enable AUTOPLAY for the U3 management stuff) as well as the normal drive. In this case the drive is actually a composite device (as far as the computer is concerned) that exposes two devices.

Normally, a format would be all that is necessary when the file system reverts to RAW. On the other hand, however, through the 15 or so flash drives I've ever had, the only time I've ever had them get RAW filesystems was after it failed miserably. (I had one start being detected as a tablet soon afterwards) this is a direct result of corruption and failure of the various cells in the device itself; I can only imagine that this is the case here especially with regards to the mysterious "cannot determine number of sectors" error. Of course, assuming they somehow have this option to remove the partition they could try that and recreate it again. If the option is not available, the tool linked on this page may prove useful for toggling the bit as well as possibly as a method of formatting.

Another option would be to try it on another computer; I've SEEN this happen for all sorts of reasons, and sometimes it will mysteriously show up as RAW on one computer and properly on another (and no, the former PC was not a win9x machine trying to access an NTFS flash drive)Here is a tool I used to fix my flash drive when this happened:

http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

It's very similar to what BC_Programmer posted, but I thought I would post it anyway.
I apologize if i've given false information, ignore my post, i'll have to amend my notes. It really is not false info...
I have had USB drives that i have been able to format/partition etc. without the steps BC laid out...
I have also had the same that needed to be treated the way he specified...

It is what it is...
WOW, thanks Patio, I've been documenting every problem and solution that my friends and I have had for about a year now and that was one of them. Thought i was going mad!

Is it a wireless mouse? No, but the wire is pinched though. It's not a problem, I was just wondering. What type of SURFACE is it on?

What kind of mouse is it?

Can you try another mouse to check?I have other MICE, but they're in use / unplugged / dusty :p.

Kensington, and a soft Circuit City mousepad.Try the other mouse, just for a second. It wont work !I assume the computer has been RESTARTED?

When does the mouse do this?

When did it all start?

Any recent downloads/installs/ect...?Downloads didn't cause it. it's because the wire is a little bent, and it may be frayed.

Anyways... Restarted... Yes... Every so often... A while ago.change your mousing surface.Kay.

Solve : Challenge : cmd uninstall of video drivers?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm having a problem with a Toshiba laptop where apparently my video configuration consider the external output as primary video output, and not the actual laptop screen. I don't normally see anything on my screen, using the fn shortcut to change output doesnt work. I can't see anything from the bios either. I can open up window though so I would like to execute a script from a usb key that would uninstall my video DRIVERS.

Anyone has an idea how I could do that?? Is there any DOS batch command to uninstall something? The video card is a nvidia geforce 6600.

And of course if someone has an idea how I can fix the original problem, I'm up for that too but so far I havent found any option! ThanksYou have or have no tried SafeMode yet?The problem stay the same, if I get into safemode I still can't see anything. I've been hitting F8 to go to the safe mode menu, and then trying a few DIFFERENT options, trying randomly with the arrows the second, the third option, and so on but without luck.

I've been able to boot with the screen working again, but I have no idea what I did to fix it, and when I closed the computer, I lost the screen again...

So I'm down to trying dos commands to fix the problem...

And I forgot to say but OS is windows XP professional. Can you even see the safemode boot screen?

If you cant see that or the BIOS, its not a driver issue, the card is either:
Dead, cable disconnected, not correctly seated. No... I believe it still work, it is a software issue not an hardware one. If I plug in a computer screen I will get something, but the problem is I don't have one and I'm trying to fix the problem without it. That's why I called the thread challenge. the built-in LCD is busted.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 04, 2009, 04:25:34 AM

the built-in LCD is busted.

Well, sounds like that or the wires that connect the screen to the motherboard have come loose. If the screen were working properly, you should still see the BIOS screen when you TURN the computer on.

If you feel confident enough doing so, you can open up the laptop casing and check the wires leading from the screen portion of the laptop into the base. (Doing so will void your warranty if one still exists.) If you're not comfortable doing this, take the laptop to a professional and let them check.BC is probably right. You may try this: Get into Safe Mode/ Device Manager and delete your monitor driver / reboot.

Alan <>< Quote from: ale52 on March 05, 2009, 07:38:10 AM

Alan <><

He can't see anything from the moment the system is turned on, which is before Windows will even begin to load the video driver. Removing the driver will not solve the problem. If he's not seeing the BIOS, either the screen has DIED or disconnected."I can open up window though so I would like to execute a script from a usb key that would uninstall my video drivers". So at one time you could see something, right?

"I've been able to boot with the screen working again, but I have no idea what I did to fix it, and when I closed the computer, I lost the screen again..." At that time Safe Mode
did work, right?

UNFORTUNATELY because of a new hard drive(a COUPLE of years ago)I don't have a usable recovery disc. I tried what I could and nothing until, out of desperation, I simply rebooted. When it restarted it was completely back again. I haven't installed anything recently so I am hoping this is just a glitch.
Any INFORMATION or suggestions would be helpful.
One other question, my mother is constantly turning the computer off and on when she uses it. She will play for awhile and then turn it off and in a couple of hours turn the machine back on to play some more. I've tried to tell her just to leave it on but she doesn't listen. Am I wrong or does this wear on the computer?
Thanks in advance for any help or information I get.

Brenda T. No. Turning computer on/off, if done properly through Start>Shut down vs. living it on all the time, doesn't matter.
If the above situation HAPPENED once, I wouldn't worry too MUCH, but I'd run HD test, anyway...http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Solve : Net Start Spooler?

Answer»

I have a small problem.

I recently uninstalled a few programs and suddenly found myself WITHOUT any printers installed, it just said spooler not active. After a little looking around, I found the DOS command line "Net Start Spooler", then everything would work okay.

Problem is everytime I reboot my computer I have to re-enter the Dos command to get the printers back.
Is there somewhere in the REGISTRY or elsewhere I can turn this back on permanently?

Computer: Dell Optiplex 210L, XP Pro SP3

ThanksStart/Run TYPE services.msc and hit Enter...
Find the Net Start Spooler and right clik it to change it's ATTRIBUTES...

Solve : Stuck Booting in Safe Mode?

Answer»

Hi GUYS, well the other day I had a virus on my computer so I downloaded some anytispyware programs (Spybot Search and Destroy) to remove it. However the spybot deleted my login REGISTRY file and I was stuck in the log in/log out loop. I used the Windows CD to repair my problem however now I am stuck in Safe mode whenever my computer boots up. Regardless of the F8 settings I select it goes to Safemode and since I was repairing my registry files with the restore DISK it can not complete the setup if it boots up in Safe mode, as an error message comes up STATING this. Prior to using the restore disk I selected boot in safe mode in the MSCONFIG utility however I cant access it anymore as my computer is stuck in a loop. Is there a way to access MSCONFIG outside of Windows to disable the boot in safe mode option?Welcome to the CH forums.

Does this mean you can boot into Safe Mode or that your pc is in a restarting loop from which you cannot escape

If you can boot into Safe Mode then click Start>Run, enter msconfig in the dialog box and hit OK. MSConfig will open, make your alterations, close MSConfig and reboot.

Good luck.Well im stuck in a restart loop with which there is no escape. I can select the startup options via the F8 key but that does not help my situation. Prior to using the repair CD I selected safe boot in the MSCONFIG but now the repair setup can not complete as it continously boots into safe mode then an error message comes up stating "Windows XP can not complete setup in Safe mode, restarting computer"What happens when you select "disable AUTOMATIC restart on system failure" from the Windows Advanced Options Menu (F8) during startup?

Solve : hard drive back up??

Answer»

Ok, my computer is down right now but i have a borrowed one, if i take my hard drive out and put it in the borrowed one /with the ORIGINAL hard drive in place\ will either of us lose our data?No

Just be CAREFUL when you are working inside of the computer. Static ELECTRICITY can fry the motherboard. MAKE sure you are grounded the whole time.

Look at this
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/oh ok, thanks for the link! and i will be able to access the information on the hard drive im backing up?Yes

You may need to take ownership of your files. If so, look here

To enable hibernation support on your computer:

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators or Power Users group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent this procedure.

1.
Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.

2.
Click the Hibernate tab, and then select the Enable hibernate support check box. If the Hibernate tab is not AVAILABLE, your hardware does not support this feature.

3.
Click OK to close the Power Options dialog box.

Note: When you put your computer into hibernation, everything in computer memory is saved on your hard disk. When you turn the computer back on, all programs and documents that were open when you turned the computer off are restored on the desktop.

Do you mean that the Hibernate tab is missing because there is no Power tab in Power options?

Thank you,

2.
Click the Hibernate tab, and then select the Enable hibernate support check box. If the Hibernate tab is not available, your hardware does not support this feature.

That might be the reason but I haven't been able to substantiate it.

Well, there is no Power tab in Power Options nor is there a Hibernate tab. The instructions I have found on the WWW to enable Hibernation all mention clicking on the Power tab which isn't there. Perhaps the quote from billrich is correct and my hardware doesn't support hibernation.

Solve : cursor moves while typing?

Answer»

when I am typing, the CURSOR seems to jump back to the beginning or middle of the sentence and I am typing the next word at the beginning or in the middle of a previous word. I haven't ACCIDENTALLY hit the wrong key or anything and this is very annoying as I have to backspace and hit the END button or move the cursor (if it is not on the same line)to bring the cursor back to where it should be. Is there anything I can do to STOP this? I had to bring the cursor back to where it should be 4 times while typing this. I hope this is the right forum to bring this QUESTION to. thanks Is "SnapTo" enabled in the Mouse settings in Control Panel ? ?
Laptop or desktop ?control panel, to system, click advanced click performance settings, then adjust to best performance , mine is now fixed.thanks I tired it and it seems to have worked. I appreciate your help

Ha

One note, though. There is no Toshiba test tool. Run Seagate tool."error detected a non seagate driver it is suggested that you contact the maker of your disc drive for more information."Try Hitachi tool.Hitachi won't download onto a diskWhat do you mean by that?everytime I try to burn Hitachi into a it tells me to unzip it first then when I try to unzip it says "jzip does not support the file format of the file your trying to open."Yes, you have to unzip the file first.
What is the extension of the zipped file, you downloaded?
Maybe your program doesn't support it.
Try 7-zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

Solve : Please Help...trying to switch OS from Vista to XP?

Answer»

I bought an Acer Notebook (Aspire 4730Z) with VISTA. It runs slow and keeps kicking me off the INTERNET (my wireless). I have an extra copy of XP pro I'm TRYING to install. I keep getting the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) everytime XP setup goes to start XP install (after the loading of the drivers). I've read conflicting stuff on other forums so now I thought Id try this one. I went out and bought a new HARD drive and still get the same error. I downloaded acer'f hd format utility so my hd should be formatted and EMPTY. I tried loading the drivers but have no idea if I did it right.

Can anybody help me I really don't want to have to run Vista. When you put the XP Pro disc into the CD Drive, are you booting from it?

Have it format the Hard Drive before you install XP.
