Solve : Computer Keeps Freezing.?

Answer»

Hey all.

I have a custom built computer running Windows XP(SP3). It has a 3.2 Gig Intel Celeron with 4 gigs of RAM (max allowed by the MOTHERBOARD). I'm EXCELLENT when it comes to building/setting up computers but when it comes to troubleshooting software issues, i'm a bit of an amatuer. I recently got a new case for it, but it has all the same things inside (Motherboard, video card, etc.). After i got it all set up, it starts this freezing thing. It takes about 3 startups before it stops freezing long enough for me to do something USEFUL. Usually i get on to play World of Warcraft. It runs for hours without freezing while i'm playing, but when i start something new like Internet Explorer, Media Player, Ventrilo, etc., it just freezes. Upon restart, i get a message saying "CMOS checksum eror - Defaults loaded" then i have to hit F1 to continue or Del to enter setup. Occasionally the date resets back to the year 2000, but the TIME and day are correct.I think that the problem exists in the battery of 3V, i SUGGEST you to change it.
And at the end set yout BIOS configuration to Default Confoguration (when you are in the BIOS there is a key that turns your BIOS Defaults just read the BIOS instructions and you will find out the key).
Cheers."Occasionally the date resets back to the year 2000, but the time and day are correct." Try replacing the motherboard battery. How old is this "new" motherboard?

Alan <>< I'll try that. The motherboard was bought new in 2006. Do you think replacing the motherboard battery will stop the freezing? It may or may not but for $2.50 you can't go wrong...According to your description it must be the motherboard battery.
Cheers.

Solve : Install error PFN list corrupt?

Answer»

Hi there,
I am getting an error when I TRY to install XP Media Center 2005 from a recovery disk for a Fujitsu computer. I have tried a clean install and it formats and partitions the hard drive fine. During the install of xp I get a blue screen with PFN list corrupt. I have tried it a couple of times. In the error message it also says that you can might try and disable the BIOS memory options, CACHING or shadowing. I couldn't find these in any of the BIOS SETTINGS. Help!!!
Your error, in most cases, points to bad RAM, or bad hard drive.
Run memtest: HTTP://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.html
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287Thanks for this.
I tried the memory test on two of the ram modules and they were OK. I then tried installing the OS again and it worked with using 2 of the 4 ram modules. I have installed SP2 &3 as WELL. The PC now freezes on start up when the wireless card is installed. If I remove it it works fine. I'll try and re install the software for the wireless card tonight.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
If the freezing still happens after installing the wireless card try installing it into a different PCI slot.

Solve : password command in batch file?

Answer»

I have DEVELOPED an ACCESS database an protected with a password.

A BATCH file should run a macro every night to execute some tasks.

If the password is set, the batch file is not executed.
Access opens and asks for the password.

If I remove the password from the database, the batch file is executed correctly.

Which command do I have to add to indicate the password because I want to protect my database.
Quote

If the password is set, the batch file is not executed.
Access opens and asks for the password.
did access ask for password only or username/password?

what's the CMD line you are using to start the database?
is it database password or WORKGROUP password you set on the database?I personally wouldn't use a batch file to open something with that requires a password. If some one happened to get a copy of the batch they could have all the access they needed to your database.

Solve : Want to transfer all my mails?

Answer»

Hello Sir,

I am using Xp Windows . I have lots of mail in my yahoo Id. Is there any method to transfer all my mail to my Outlook Express or in any other software. So that when I disconnect my Internet I should be ABLE to read it .

And also say me a method through which all the message which comes in my yahoo mail should come in my outlook express. Or if u KNOW any other software in which I will be able to transfer all my mail. Please tell me.

Regards.

Anjeep
You can't do this with the free Yahoo Mail account; you need a Yahoo! Mail Plus, the premier account which requires payment of a fee, which I believe is about $20/yr. If you have, or get, a Yahoo! Mail Plus account, setting up your account in Outlook Express is explained at POP Yahoo! Mail Plus with Microsoft Outlook Express.

By the way, the free Google mail, or Gmail, can be RECEIVED in Outlook Express or another EMAIL client.Dear Sir,

But I WANT to transfer all my mails. So please give me a solution. If i need to download any software i will do that also. But pls tell me bcz all my mails i want to
transfer in my pc. And then i will disconnect my internet line from my home.

Regards.

Anjeep
I understand what you want. And, to do that, you need to setup a POP email account in Outlook Express or in any other email software.

In my previous post, I said, "You can't do this with the free Yahoo Mail account; you need a Yahoo! Mail Plus ..." What part of that statement do you not understand?

Solve : Windows Update Folders?

Answer»

I was just wondering if it is safe to remove (delete) OLD Windows Update backup folders from my computer ?I think so. But I don't do it manually though, I have tuneup utilities delete the windows update backup files for me

IF you don't know what tuneup utilities is then go to this website and find out!
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/I'm always against using so called "miracle" tools, fix-it-all.
Sooner, or later, they're gonna break something.
...and to pay for them? Why?
Open Windows Explorer, and delete uninstall folders, LEAVING those 2-3 months old, alone.no such thing as miracle tool in my opinion but i'd rather trust some professional to do some of the work sometimes.Quote from: Szpixman on March 15, 2009, 12:26:29 PM

CCleaner > Advanced > Hotfix Uninstallers.

Don't remove them unless you know the updates are working OK. Once removed there is no getting them back.Quote

50 bucks for removing old updates? Please...

Dude, don't be so irritated

I meant there's many ways of doing THINGS, my way suits me fine but it's not the only way. Yes, it's a paid software but I got it through trialpay so it was virtually free for me anyway. But of course whatever gets the job done QUICK and free of issues and free of cost then that's good

I just posted a suggestion and it works but don't get caught up just thinking it's the only way things work.

Thanks everyone. Will try the CCleaner option...it has always been safe & trustworthy as far as I'm concerned, even they're registry cleaner has never cause me grief. I won't go into some of the cold sweats
I've gotten trying some of the other ones.

Solve : Entire computer slowed down after video card changed?

Answer»

Recently while gaming my graphics card(880GT) fan gave out. I unplugged the card and looked it over, and put it back in. After doing so my entire computer had slowed down. I thought maybe something had happened to the card so i traded it in for a 9800GT and after uninstalling my old drivers and installing my NEW ONES the problem persisted. I have over 1GB of RAM left. During gaming i cant tell any difference in the speed between the highest and the lowest graphics quality.
AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
2.21 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM(over 1GB is free)
I have 100 GB of free SPACE on my C drive.
The only Antivirus i have is AVG.
Thanks for your time!Just an update: I have run defrag, disk clean-up, SPY bot, adware scans, antivirus scans, Hijack this and i have even shut down all unnecessary applications to no avail, still the same speed as before...I partitioned my drive, formatted and everything is running SMOOTHLY now.Try to get the newest graphic card driver, what I mean is to update your driver.

Solve : CD ROM promblem?

Answer»

I recently ran scanreg /restore and scanreg /fix (last night) and today my Floppy drive A:\ and D:\ won't work. I looked them up in help and it said they were working properly. However I beg to differ because when I put a CD in D:\ it says: D:\ is not accesable. The device is not ready.

How can I ready this device so that it works when I put a CD in?
One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Hi broni,
None of that worked. I guess I should have mentioned i'm running the old cave man 98se! That might make a differance?Fix #2 doesn't apply to 98.
I'm not sure about #4. I'd have to fire up my 98.

Why did you run scanreg in the first place?I don’t KNOW! BASICALLY because I’m a moron! My computer skills are very LIMITED! Say it with me! LIM-IT-ED! I have to depend on others for help when I have a problem. I may be the roughest, TOUGHEST, meanest son of a bi*ch this side of the Mississippi! Well, at least when my wife lets me! LOL But I don’t know squat about computers! This is just one of THREE such boards I now am a member of.

On another board I had someone helping me try and figure out how to turn my files backs into what they needed to be to open with. They some how were changed to open in registry and that only works for registry files. To make things more complicated I don’t have the original installation CD. They figured it out and fixed my problem. Those scanreg things were just some things they suggested we might use but never did. I thought what could it hurt and ran them anyway! Mistake! Those ideas you suggested might have worked. I posted the same question on another board and a guy answered and said sometimes dust can make it not be able to read so I wiped the cd on my shirt then blew into the computer for good measure and bingo, it worked!

Thank you for trying to help! One of you fixed it!

P.S. That scan stopped on 83% and said: Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space on your windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install windows to a new directory.

You wouldn't by any chance know how to do that would you?
Quote

so I wiped the cd on my shirt then blew into the computer for good measure and bingo, it worked!

LOL...

As for your other question, it looks like You have some registry problem, but to fix those, you'd need 98 CD.
Are you having any particular problems with your computer?Yes, i had some problem with explore shuting down but I didn't write down what it said. Something about performing an illigel action. So your saying I would need a 98se cd to move windows to a new directory? In case of Win 98, you can install it over existing installation. It should fix system files problem, and your data is safe.remember I said I didn't have a 98se installation cd?I do, but you don't have much of an option here. You may use borrowed CD, if you can find one.I'm beginning to think your right! Just like in that old movie THE DEER HUNTER. I've been yelling maow and slapping myself around for an hour now! I'm up to three bullets in the gun! LOL Someth'ins gonna happen!!!!!!! LOLI think this will help you!

Solve : video problems...?

Answer»

I don't know what this problem is besides saying it is a video problem... i am not to computer literate... I had a bug and had to reinstall everything on my PC. I have a Compaq PC with windows PX, IE 7... my problem is i do some surveys on line and some emails i receive from friends that have videos to watchand it TRIES to pop up a video i cant see it.... the screen is different colors but no picture. does anyone know how to fix this?slow down. What is the different color showing? Is it trying to open windows media player or something and it's "windows xp" not "windows PX"

Windows PX don't exist. Are you watching the video from your browser? Depending on what the format of the video file is, you might NEED install some components. Most online videos are encoded in Flash.

Try going here and installing Flash and see if that fixes your problem.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Give some more details so we can understand more about what is happening.
or get the klite codec pack.

Just TYPE "klite codec pack" into google search engine and you'll get a link to DOWNLOAD it.

This is if you are trying to watch videos on your computer using something like windows media player.

Solve : Lost sound control progam?

Answer»

Well let's see, I think I've read though most if not all the post and i can't seem to find another post with this problem, If i missed it please let me know. And i hope this is the right topic, well with all that being said here's my problem..

Recently I upgraded from a Compaq to a dell computer after getting my dell i pulled the hard drive out of my Compaq and installed it in the dell along with the ONE that was in it. And all went well, After getting most of my programs reloaded i noticed the my MSN was not working right, i COULD not set my home page, So the search began to find the problem, With no luck after hours of searching, I went to msn themself (on-line CHAT) and explained the problem, We went though this and then we went though that and then after about 3 hours we (or i should say they) removed msn and reinstalled it and WALLA and that fixed that, Or so i thought, After doing a finale reboot i noticed 2 things i no longer had my little speaker in the lower right hand corner of my screen and i had lost my roboform from my right click on my mouse. No problem i said out loud, Well i got fooled, i STARTED with 1 problem now i have 2. So i re downloaded roboform and that took care of that, now on to the other problem, So start-settings-control panel-sound, place check to put icon in corner (Oh by the way i have sound just no icon to control it) Clicked to put check for icon and got error message
(Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed to install it, use add/remove program in control panel)
So there i went but no such critter is there, So i have updated the driver, uninsulated and reinstalled the driver, searched and read and jumped up and down and cursed a bit (Well quite a bit) all with no luck and then last night i noticed that my entertainment folder under program-Accessories is empty. So here i am asking for help. Oh 1 last thing my dell is a custom build and not from dell so i can't go to them and my builder is out of town for the holidays so i can't go there. Can anyone help? And Merry Christmas to all..hi sorry i cant help you, i just wanted to say i am having the exact same problem i have cursed many times at the stupid thing.... your not alone i hope some one can help..

Solve : Please settle this?

A buddy and I are having a hard TIME agreeing on something....please help us settle this....

If you are running a program like CC Cleaner is there anywhere on a laptop that run XP that stores Internet browsing history??
Data can be retrived even after some /most cleaning processes are run...
When cost is no object this can apply even after formatting multiple times.
However you're relatively safe considering it would have to be DONE in a lab atmosphere with equipment few outside of Government or Military can afford.
Price out a data recovery service to get a BETTER idea...Anyone ELSE??

What do you guys use a cleaner?Anyone else???Files deleted from a computer are only removed from the FAT. They won't actually be removed until their space is up next for overwriting. If you ever want to prevent people from getting access to your data, use a program such as Eraser. Then removed your hard drive a TAKE a really powerful magnet to it. Finally, smash the *censored* out of it with a hammer.Get a flash drive and install PortableApps with Firefox and Tor. This way your browsing will be completely private no matter what computer you are on.

Solve : no sound xp?

Answer»

yeah so did i! my os is also xp sp2 Bluepen, OK i went back to my computer/TV and tried to see what if anything i could get at that resembled the instructions i presented earlier. What i found is that from the clicking on my volume icon on the lower RIGHT task bar it brought up the name of my sound card (SB Audigy). I could work my way through many open windows from there that allowed all kinds of changes. Of course i didn't change anything as unlike you my setup is working fine. However i would ask the following --do you have the volume icon in the task bar? If not i would follow the instructions contained in my earlier post to create it. Then if you do or when you do see what you can display and if you get the same results as i do then examine the great number of options to see if something jumps out at you that needs to be changed. It OCCURS to me that more than just the O/S may be involved here and WHATEVER you have as your sound card may display something that reflects the manner in which that particular card presents the options (as opposed to being universal to all sound cards). Therefore the terminology of the words in regards to what the TV displays may differ. I hope this makes sense. keep us informed truenorthYES!!! I Finally got it to work.
The problem was the graphics card, it was being too clever and was trying to send sound, i got this from another forum...
"Contrary to popular belief, DVI *CAN* pass audio. The audio is sent on the vdieo lines encoded in the video blanking intervals. For a full explanation, see: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1031650868

Thus, it's likely that your video card is indicating that audio is present to your TV(s) and it's not the TV's fault at all. (I'm hitting the same problem myself with an Olevia 237 TV).

From what I can gather, the nVidea 84/85/8600 cards do this, as (apparently) does my 7100/630i integrated video MB. This may be related to the newer nVidia support of HDCP over DVI. Some video cards apparently provide a method to pass through audio via SPDIF headers on the card. YMMV."

So what i did was...
There's a way you can configure the NVidia driver (prior to installing it) to override/ignore that it 'discovers' an HDMI connection, and thus NOT send the digital audio signal through the DVI connector (obviously requires that you can and DO use an external analog audio cable). This solves the problem for those of us with HDTV's that auto-sense HDMI/analog audio (mine's an Olevia 237T) and have nVidia graphics (mine's an HTPC based on a 7100/630i motherboard w/integrated graphics). I found this originally at http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...=&#entry330319 - although it was being used for a different purpose - but I can certainly vouch that it works!

Here are the steps in full (rewritten by me)... You need to have your PC hooked up to your TV, so the EDID discoverer can get your display's ID code:

1. Get Phoenix EDID Designer
, (http://www.tucows.com/preview/329441), unzip and run the exe (no install reqd)
2. Click Tools->Extract registry EDID, then double click the line for your TV/monitor in the popup
3. Click Tools->Byte viewer, and note down the values in row 00, columns 08-0B (4 bytes)
4. Start the installation of the latest Nvidia drivers and cancel out once the files are extracted
6. Open the file "nv_disp.inf" in a text editor. By default for the current drivers this is in C:\NVIDIA\...\169.21
7. Scroll down to the section [nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings], add the following line there, replacing the "XX" values below with the 4 values noted in step 3:

HKR,, OverrideEdidFlags0, %REG_BINARY%, XX,XX,XX,XX,00,00,FF,FF,04,00,00,00,7E,01,00

(In my case the TV code was SYN 0043, the four values being: 4F,2E,43,00 )

4. Uninstall your current drivers and reboot

5. Install the modified drivers by RUNNING the previously extracted setup.exe. By default for the current drivers, this is in C:\NVIDIA\...\169.21. You'll get a warning about the driver not being signed because of the modified inf. Just press OK.

Reboot, and you should have GLORIOUS AUDIO!!!

There is a simple hotfix that nvidia provides but is only available for vista since i had xp i had to do the above method and it works fine.

thanks for your help truenorth and gold.

Solve : OS won't install.?

Answer»

My computer in my sound studio suddenly started acting up. It would start to load Windows then I hear a small click, the monitor tells me it has lost contact and the computer will restart over and over. I decided to install another HD and install the OS but it kept freezing at "installing devices". I even tried another HD with the same results. I even tried two different OS's with the same result. I can't boot to safe mode but I've had the computer running in setup for almost four hours so I guess that pretty WELL eliminates some hardware problems. Here is some information that I could gather. It's AMD Athlon with 786 Mb RAM and the CPU temp. is 37 deg. C and the system temp. is 27 deg.C Is there anything else I could check?what OS are you trying to install?

XP ProEither the CD or CD drive is dirty. Swap it out for a known good one.Sharpie version of XP ? ?for the cd, take a kleenex and wet it slightly and slowly wipe the cd in circular manner. Have had problems where everything is on cd but cd has dirt so laser can't go thru dirt and hence computer assume cd doesn't have file and therefore error. They're both new versions of the OS so I don't think it's dirt that's causing the problem. Patio, I'm not what you mean by sharpie version but they are both legimate versions.SuperDave...

Are you sure all of the hardware is properly seated on the motherboard? If I were you, I'd disassemble all components from the motherboard and clean the slots using canned air and a brush...of course, making sure the computer is off at the time you do this and that you protect the components from ESD (electrostatic discharge).

Once you have all the slots cleaned...re-assemble the components and try again.

for the cd, take a kleenex and wet it slightly and slowly wipe the cd in circular manner. Have had problems where everything is on cd but cd has dirt so laser can't go thru dirt and hence computer assume cd doesn't have file and therefore error.

not circular- straight outwards from the middle.

That way if it scratches(and chances are anything will make minute scratches) they will be perpendicular to the data tracks- according the "upgrading and repairing PCs 15th Edition", anyway:

Quote
To remedy this type of problem, you can clean the bottom surface of the CD with a soft cloth, but be careful not to scratch the surface in the process. The best technique is to wipe the disc in a radial fashion, using strokes that start from the center of the disc and emanate toward the outer edge. This way, any scratches will be perpendicular to the tracks rather than parallel to them, minimizing the interference they might cause. You can use any type of solution on the cloth to clean the disc, so long as it will not damage plastic. Most window cleaners are excellent at removing FINGERPRINTS and other dirt from the disc and don't damage the plastic surface.

Never do this.

m_260, what were you thinking of when you posted that?

I clean my disks and checked all the connections and rebooted. Windows came up and asked for the OS installation disk to be inserted. I froze again at the same place with 35 minutes REMAINING. I did this twice. About an hour later, I disconnected the DVD drive, rebooted with the original HD and it just kept recycling. I reconnected the DVD drive, hooked up the second drive that I was trying to load the OS on and it asked for the OS installation disk. I inserted the disk and it finished the installation. So, it must have been a loose connection on the DVD drive plus a defective HDSo are you in the clear?I spoke too soon. It takes forever to boot and forever to open a program. It's quite FAST once I have the program opened. This afternoon, every time I try to open a particular program (CoolEdit) it takes forever then reboots and I get a message that the system has recovered from a serious error. I checked the events logs and it shows a disk warning followed by an atapi error. Any ideas?Quote from: Original post

That's possible. It was one I had been using for a back-up. I'm going to try another smaller one.

Solve : I lost my IE desktop icon?

Answer»

I like to make ICONS so i D/L'd an icon program that manages ico lib's, i forget the name...when I uninstalled it it took the IE icon from the desktop, (you know, the one you can r click and it brings up internet properties) anyways..I have searched and searched and can't find it, anyone know where i can make a copy/ or how to do it? [emailprotected]ou8i8uo......you are trying to replace the internet EXPLORER icon on your desktop........click start /all programs/ find the internet explore icon and right click on it and select .......send to.....desktop (create SHORTCUT)
and it should be back.

let us know
dl65 I don't want to make a regular shortcut, it's that special one I want. The one you right clik and get internet properties with. It's not a regular shortcut, I don't think its a shortcut at all. I've looked in Windows, system, system32 even the recycle bin. Searched C even. any Ideas?ou8i8uo.....well, if I right click on the internet explorer icon on my desktop and then select properties they are there ......perhaps you have some other issue going on .
when you right click on any of the other icons on your desktop do you have the properties at the bottom of your list ?
let us know.

dl65 Open Internet Explorer, and go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and scroll down to Navigation. Put a check-mark in "Show IE icon on the desktop." click Apply and OK.

Right-click on the icon, now on your desktop, and open the Properties.

Or did you just hide your desktop icons?Mac......Unless I read his post wrong his problem isn't getting the IE icon back on his desktop ...he is saying that when he gets it back there he doesnt have properties showing up when he right clicks on that icon .

dl65 I guess I'm not making myself clear.

No, I did not hide or clear my desktop icons.

Yes, If I create a shortcut for IE, properties does come up in the context menu but just the ones for a regular shortcut. Not Internet properties.

What I'm looking for is a special icon. I think it's a system icon. It's not one you can just make.

Right click on your desktop, click properties from the drop down list, go to the Desktop tab and click the button underneath the wallpaper list. From there you can set the 'system' icons.Quote

Well either it is what I said in the previous post or, if you are using XP you can either right-click the desktop, or go to display in the control panel, and click on the Desktop tab, then the Customise Desktop button and put a check-mark in to show the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop.

When you have clicked Apply and OK, etc, if you now right-click the desktop icon you should get the entire Internet Explorer control panel.
http://www.icon-maker.com/hiya - I just came across this site and had the same problem - I found the "fix" in the following microsoft link - it will show you how to fix your IE desktop icon so that you can "right click" and get into Internet Explorer "Internet Properties" window that has the 7 TABS - where you can delete your browsing history etc.

Solve : trying to fix Master Boot Record in XP?

Answer»

I had UBUNTU and XP dual booted on the same hard drive. I went into Disk Management in Windows and deleted the Ubuntu partition. But when I reboot the computer it says "Error 22".

I've had this problem before when I dual booted Ubuntu with Vista and I was able to fix the problem with this command:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

But this is not working with XP. I insert the XP installation disk and select the command prompt and try the same command and is doesn't work, it only says, "BAD command or file name".

what am i missing here?

thanksQuote

it only says, "bad command or file name".

You used Bootrec in Vista, it appears not to be available in XP..

See KB314058

Good luck.
do you have the windows cd? try the repair option in it. Ubuntu or linux in general i think used grub loader.BOOT to the XP CD and enter the recovery console.

Run the fixboot and fixmbr commands. That seems to be the problem I'm having... When I insert the installation disk, there is NO "repair" option.

The only options I have are: "Restore Windows XP" and "Boot to command prompt using CD-ROM"

If I select "restore WIN XP" it wants to completely reinstall. The other option brings me to an A:\ prompt.....Try this

Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Now get to the root directory of C by typing: cd\
you should now just see a standard C prompt
Now execute the fixboot and fixmbr commandsalright I got the ISO burned, give me a little while and I'll post back

thanksEL EXCELLENTE` !!!

Just don't ask if that is a real word....lol

Anyway, it worked..............thanks much

Apparently my OEM installation disk does not include the repair console. If it does I have no clue how to access it.

Regards Everybody

You have not got a full retail Windows install disk. These are the ones that have the Recovery Console and repair options BUILT in. What you have got is a manufacturer's recovery disk, which contains a prepared "image" of a fresh install for that model PC, and the software necessary to write that onto your hard drive.

Solve : can i run vista on one harddrive and xp on another harddrive on one computer?

Answer»

can i run vista on one harddrive and xp on another harddrive on one computerYes.and howWhich operating system are you running now? Vista?
Do you have the other hard drive?
i have vista running now on a sata hard drive and windows xp on a ide harddrive i want to installDo you have the XP disk? Do you just have a hard drive that has XP already installed on it?i have the diskCool.

Since you already have Vista on your sata drive we're gonna go about this BASS ackwards, but let's dive in!

Unplug your Vista drive and install XP on the PATA.

Now, after you PLUG that Vista drive back in, you have to decide how you want to configure your dual BOOT machine.

You could just go into BIOS each time you want to start up your computer to choose which drive to boot. That would be the simplest solution.

However, If you want the "standard" dual boot machine, you will need to install the boot loader on your computer.

If you choose a standard dual-boot setup you can repair Vista's boot loader by BOOTING to the Vista DVD after XP's been installed and instead of installing choose the Repair my computer option in the bottom left corner of the second screen. Start up Repair will then restore the new windows boot loader and make both Vista and XP bootable.

or

After you install XP, You can boot to the XP drive and follow the instructions here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529/en-us
to enable a dual boot without having to access the BIOS every time you start up.

good luck.

yeah you are dual booting. You can already install windows into 2 different partitions. And partitions can be physically2 different hard drives or one hard drive cut into two or more pieces.

Here goes: I will be typing merrily along and I hear a "bong" sound and my keyboard STOPS working. I can mouse around, but cannot get the keyboard to work. Long and short of it is I do a system restore and that fixes the problem. But what a HEADACHE! Any ideas how this happens? I looked up shortcut keystrokes and didn't find anything.PLease read this:

Solve : Sigmatel audio/sound system code 10. Cant fix!?

Answer»

Ok. so for ahwile ive had some problems with my computer. (gateway labtop from thanksgiving about 2 years ago) and every now and then i screw with it some, in hopes to fix it.
Im pretty sure it is a matter of power shortages, as my battery has short circuited. So when i access larger video/grapics demanding games such as Shaiya, or WoW the computer just turns off. I am GOING to GET a new battery and worry about it more then.
Now...my dad doesnt like to listen to me when he is "fixing" my computer. So he was going through add/remove programs, and deleted sigmatel audio. Which, as it happens to be, is my sound. So i now have no sound available on the computer. I turn it up, and get no bars registering a turn on/off.
So i went to the sigmatel audio download page, downloaded it, and it failed because it says the folder/drive was MISSING. Restart the computer and try again. So, i went into device manager>Sound, Video, and Game Controllers>IDT High DEFINITION Audio Codec (which is where the exclamation is)...i updated it, but there were no updates. I rolled it back, but this failed as well, seeing as the whole thing was deleted...lastly i uninstalled, ran a new hardware search, and reinstalled it, but again there was a problem showing up. Now that i had a new one in (same deal but figured hey why not, redownload maybe somethings differant) and attempted to download, but i got the same message of "The driver can not be found: Code 10" message.
Not being familiar with this particular code, i looked it up, and as it says the driver either encrypted its own information, so that the computer is unfamiliar with it, or it is missing. I am nearly sure it is just missing.
So how do i fix this? Any ideas? I am fairly stubborn so if anyone even has some ideas please post them, and ill give it a shot.

Thanks,
CLOVER

Solve : no program associated with performing action?

Hi
On some emails I get attachments, Some of them come up with this message.
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder option control panel.
I can't find anyting about creating an association there.
If you could help I would truly appreciate it.
JimSave the attachment to your desktop. Right click the file and choose open with . . . . from a list of programs on your computer. If the file ends with .doc, choose MS Word or Wordpad.

If you are unable to determine the last three characters after the ".",
choose the option of letting the internet decide which program opens the file. Once the file ( attachment is open ) the association has been established and Windows will remember next time.

p.s. When you right click the file and a dropdown menu appears, choose Properties and the .doc or .wpd or .xxx will be revealed and you may decide which program opens the file.

Click start, click Turn off Computer.

A small screen appears with the following options:

Standby Turn Off Restart

When we click Restart, the computer shuts down and after a few seconds the computer reboots.

If the computer does not reboot, then there is a problem and I'm not sure how to fix it?

I will need to google [ No reboot after a Restart shutdown ]

Solve : Installing a computer power supply.?

Answer»

I recently just bought a new computer, but my old has been sitting in my BASEMENT for awhile. Reason being was the power supply was burned out.

I went to the store and bought a new power supply for a Compaq Presario 4000 Series. Fairly old computer in the technology world. However, I cannot remember which power connectors connected to what.

Does it matter which power connectors (RED, 2 Black & a yellow cable) connect to which device? (Hard Drive, disk drive, etc.) I've tried multiple WAYS and the computer turns on each time but my MONITOR doesn't display anything? Is that not the fault of the power supply CONNECTIONS but a video card problem? The video card never had a problem before. Please help! Thanks. :-)

JDeveloper 10-g uses jdk 1.5.0_05 and there are some new features in Jdk 6 that I THOUGHT I'd try so
I downloaded the jre 6 and RAN it.
Ever since doing this my jar files no longer run either from double-clicking in Windows Explorer or from the command line.
So I OPENED up the Control Panel and double-clicked the Java button which should display the Java Control Panel.
Nothing happens.
Now I am at a loss. I TRIED System Restore but no earlier restore points were available.
WHAT CAN I DO NOW? uninstall all java IDE's SDKs and so forth and REINSTALL?

Solve : Application Error issue.......?

Answer» HELLO everyone. I recently disabled a couple non-essential items for start-up through msconfig. When I did that and restarted, my computer now asks for a user name and password. When I click ok, it boots up fine, but certain programs (such as Ad Aware) don't work and come up with this error:

The APPLICATION failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I'm also having trouble opening up programs LIKE disk defragmenter and add/remove programs.

Solve : Started with a virus...?

Answer»

Update COZ I am still hoping you guys can help me somewhere along the line.

Bought the same 2 hard drives that were in the PC...cost £70. Replaced them and no change. Still getting exactly the same messages as i was before.

So its not a corrupt hard drive.

Hopefully new motherboard will arrive soon but I am dreading this as I really am a complete novice and have never done this before. Google is my friend..I hope.

Its a challenge and although I would love to fix the problem, I am hating every MINUTE of this.

I'd try a different CD drive before the motherboard or hard drive.

Does your CD drive connect to your motherboard with this cable?
Same kind of WIRE but its blue..does the colour MAKE any difference?

New motherboard is in the post and will arrive tomorrow.

Should I try a new CD drive FIRST? I really would like to avoid taking the PC to bits if I can avoid it.

Also if I buy a new CD drive does it have to be the same make/model?Make sure that the connector that's the furthest from the middle connector is plugged into the port on the motherboard. Make sure that the other end is plugged into the drive - not the middle connector. You'll notice a small notch on each connector that will let you make sure that you are plugging the cable into the drive the right way (not upside down).

MOTHERBOARD==============NONE=====DRIVEYes it is.

Solve : Hide or disable taskbar?

Answer»

I'v e been asked to implement a database in a WAREHOUSE with multiple USERS. All I am giving them is a mouse, screen and PC. They will have no keyboard. All is working fine.
The PC will be permanently logged on so WORK on one sign-on.

Because the user account has access to a network drive I want them to not be able to physically access it (but need the access for the database). My question then is how can I disable (or permamently hide) the TASKBAR and start button when this user logs in.
Also is it possible to disable the right mouse button over the desktop?

Ideally, I'd like all this to be done when the PC is logged and a batch file is run to do this action, however all suggestions would be gratefully received. So I'm guessing you want the users to access/modify the database only and not see or access the other files on the network drive? Is this why you are wanting to hide the taskbar and start button? My computer also?

Solve : Problem after Win 2k restore?

Answer»

Hello all,

My Pc running win2k recently died on me and wouldn't start in safe MODE, or be repaired using the recovery console. So I decided to do a clean install of the OS. I had a backup of the entire c:\ DRIVE and the system state saved on another hdd so when i had the system up and running I used the backup and restore wizard to restore my pc using the backup file hoping it would then be in the previous state before it died.

All went well until my DESKTOP loaded up. Icons were missing, my documents folder empty and the normal startup programs weren't loaded. All the programs in the start menu seemed to be there though. Upon looking at documents and settings on the root, there is a folder called user1, and inside all my documents that were missing.
I use to log on to my computer with the username : Admin.

I created the same user again and from what i can tell, when it logs in I'm on a profile which has never been used beofre and not on the Admin user i was on before with the user1 files.
Is there anyway to assign the current user Admin to load the documents and settings from the user1 folder as I think this would restore my computer to like it was before?

THANK you in advance for whoever can help me out

Solve : Need help with Outlook Express?

Answer»

So we RECENTLY reformatted our computer, and we've had problems with OE ever since.

My computer keeps getting this pop-up from Outlook Express. It says "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact MESSAGES. This may take up to a few minutes."

Problem is....there's nothing in Outlooks Express. There's no accounts there, nothing. My mom is the only one who uses this program, and she hasn't used it since the computer was reformatted.

The pop-up keeps popping up. If you ignore it, it goes away after a few seconds, then comes back less than a minute later, and it just keeps doing that. If you click Okay or Cancel, it goes away for maybe 10 minutes, then starts coming back again.

No matter what I do, this thing keeps coming back. I'm not even using OE. It's not open, nothing.

Help?Have you tried manually compacting the OE database from the File menu?

I don't use OE (I use Thunderbird) but, I believe that OE has a control for how OFTEN (or when) OE will compact.

As a FINAL resort, you can remove OE from with the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs> select "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left>scroll to OE>deselect and FOLLOW the prompts. You said that your mother uses OE so be aware that this can be undone by following the same procedure but putting a checkmark in the OE box. Be sure to re-boot between uninstalling and re-installing.

Best of luck and please let us know how you make out.

EDIT: You can also leave OE uninstalled and get Thunderbird for your mother: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/Have you allowed OE to go through the compacting procedure without interruption? It should not be interrupted once it's started.

What version of Windows and OE are you using?

Might be worth going through the remove and add procedure described by drmsucks to see whether merely doing that stops this annoyance.

Do you have firewall and virus protection on this computer?

'Automatic updates' is on but update install history shows no updates and no updates are found in 'add remove programs', only "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable' & 'Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1'.
What do I do now?Go to page 2 and read through 7th post down by ValiryMay. 8bamboo's suggestion worked for me. Good LuckAs Hiloed mentioned I had the same problem. PLEASE see my post and the cure posted by 8bamboos here...

Good luck. Also posted in other thread:

Thank you soooooo much!!! That worked like magic. 8bamboos your a genious.
My PC was able to download and install 89 of 90 updates (WU has not worked since I re-installed XP SP2 from DISC weeks ago). Only Microsoft .NET framework failed to install. Do I need this and if so how do I get it and how do I know what version I need?

Also, I was advised by a friend not to download & install SP3 yet. He said to give it some time to let Microsoft work out any PROBLEMS with it. Is this right or should I get SP3 also?

Thanks again,

Solve : need help for possibly infected laptop?

Answer»

I am trying to fix a friends lap top - it is running on Windows XP and is a Compaq - Presario X1000 laptop. I was told that it started after some songs were downloaded through limewire. What happens is that when the computer is turned on and you log on a window comes up stating "Windows Defender - Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to STOP. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."
Every 15 seconds or so everything (including taskbar on bottom and desktop icons disappear only to reappear as if the laptop had just been turned on (because the little icons on the right hand side within the taskbar pop up one by one). I have tried to open My Computer and it does not want to open. There are also free versions of AVG on the computer. I have tried running these free checks and they come back with nothing. I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm not sure if this would be a virus or a device problem? PLEASE help.See, if you can operate computer from Safe Mode.Thats a real problem, could be a Trojan or nasty virus. I had one which acted quite the same, what its doing is restarting explorer, from a predetermined time. This would stop you from REMOVING the virus. MAKING it somewhat invincible.

I would say just BOOT in safe mode too.. If it doesn't work in safe mode tell me what happened..

Solve : Music Voice problems??

Answer»

Guys my music sounds great, but the voices all sound like alvin Chipmunk or donald duck? Anyone know what is wrong and how to FIX it? I have windows XPfor instance the deep voice of dean martin sounds more like the voice of a 16 yr old wayne newton!!!Do you have any software that manipulates sounds?
When did this problem occur?
What Operating System are you using?http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0067.mspx

Why does my music sound like chipmunks are singing?

Don't worry, small RODENTS haven't set up housekeeping in Windows Media Player. Instead, your sound card's clock most likely has a timing problem. To fix the problem, try reducing the hardware-acceleration level for your audio card by doing the following:

1. In Control Panel, open Sounds and Audio Devices.

2. On the Volume tab, in the SPEAKER settings area, click the Advanced button.

3. In the Advanced Audio Properties dialog box, click the Performance tab, and then adjust the Hardware acceleration slider control to adjust the clock timing for your sound card.

Keep in mind that, if your sound card supports multichannel (5.1) audio playback, turning off hardware acceleration (by moving the slider to None) will cause the sound card to play all multichannel audio in stereo (two speaker) sound.

If you can't fix the problem by adjusting hardware acceleration, check for updates for your sound card by doing the following:
• Check for sound-card driver updates.
• Check for Microsoft DirectX updates. Thanks so much BroniThe one time I didn't look in Google. What's the outcome?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 13, 2008, 01:37:21 PM

Solve : help to run program?

Answer»

sir i have a dos base program,
how can i run this program in WINDOW xp.
to setup this program.
can i upload this program?? to you
please mail me .....What program ? ?
DOS is no longer part of Windows.

More details please...There is a program CALLED DOSBox

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOSBox

I've used it before on my Vista laptop and it does work with running old DOS program files and emulates them WELL. I was playing DOOM on it and DUKE Nukem and a couple other old DOS games with good sound and functionality. I know it will work, but I haven't used it in a while so I am not sure how exactly you'd do it. There should be tutorials on their SITE though. I think you have to mount a drive and keep the files in the right location. should be what you're looking for.

Solve : press F-1 to continue?

Answer»

I have fixed a friends Dell Optiplex 745 computer. All is working well except it will not boot directly to windows, I get the "press f-1 to continue then it boots up. When I go to the bios, it looks different than any bios screen I have seen. I don't know how to fix things there, there are not a lot of options..In the BIOS you could select "RESTORE defaults" and that may get normal operation back. Does the "F-1" warning contain any INFORMATION as to what is prompting it such as a fan failure, etc.? truenorthSounds like the F1 to continue is just telling you the system checked out OK and is ready to boot. Some MOTHERBOARDS have this setting in the BIOS, and it could be the default setting. I would SEE if you can look around the different BIOS menus and see if you can find something that sounds like this option. You will not change anything the BIOS unless you select the "save and exit" command when done and then confirm it again. Just looking around doesn't hurt anything, and if you don't save any changes when done in there, that also won't hurt anything.

Solve : can't run Micorsoft Word?

Answer»

Anyone please help!

I'm surprised earlier when I TRIED opening one of my documents. During my first attempt to open my word document, my AVG free antivirus detected a MALWARE named winword.exe. Of course, I selected the option to remove the detected malware, not realizing that it's the executable file for Microsoft word.

And then, I tried opening my documents again, but this time, a pop-up message is being displayed informing me that I don't have enough privilege accessing the file, and the same warning keeps on popping every time I tried opening a word document. On the other hand, excel, publisher, and other Microsoft programs are working properly,

What happened? what should I do?

I have a Windows XP computer, and the program in question is Microsoft 2007 edition I would suggest running an alternative malware scanner (such as Malware Bytes Antimalware Free) as a one-off to ensure your machine's as clean as possible. After than, re-run the Office setup from CD. It will give you an option to repair your existing installation - choose that.I have Malwarebytes installed but is currently DISABLED. I'm only using it once a month to perform a full scan. I tried running it with HOPE that it will solve my problem with winword.exe, but it detected nothing.

On the other hand, I tried the repair option through the Microsoft Installation Wizard. It TOOK less than a 45 minutes before the repair option finished, but I'm very happy that it solved my problem.

Thanks for the advice...

What game ?

Or the video driver isn't installed. It seems that all his games were working fine but ACCORDING to him, they suddenly stopped working. He said that they would begin to load and then stop. No error message.

So he uninstalled SIMS 3 and tried to REINSTALL it when he got the error I mentioned before.Amazingly enough...still not enough info on the PC in question...and/or the games...What do you need to know?
