Running win 98 in safemode the ps-2 mouse works. but in windows it does not, mouse properties says I am missing driver file vmouse.VXD and to reload windows. I have an OLDER laptop with only a 2Gig HD. I wanted to do a FRESH install of ME, in order to delete all the crap that I've accumulated over time.

I purchased the laptop used and originally it looks like it had win98 as the OS. As a result of its "used" status I didn't get any disks with it (i.e. RECOVERY, win98 or winME) I have FOUND the copy of the winME on the hard DRIVE & have been able to reinstall from there, however this still left me with all the old crap on my system.

I'm wondering how I would do a reformat & then reinstall the copy of ME currently on the hard drive??

I think I would need to make a boot disk, then reformat the drive & then reinstall?? Correct?

Also note that the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, but I do have an external Hard drive which I've copied all the information from the laptop to.

Can anyone give me details on how I would accomplish this, if it is even possible without having the physical disks?

Ive recently installed WFW 3.11 and when i try to start up it COMES up with the message: "you started your computer with a version of ms-dos thats incompatible with this version of windows" then stops and you have to restart.
Does anyone know how to get ROUND this problem?
Or will i have to get a different version of DOS?

Red.....You didnt mention the O/S ......I'm guessing its XP ......... and I'm also guessing the message about the office works ...prompts you to put the install cd in the drive .........( which you may not have ) ......So if you go the MS UPDATE page and let it scan the PC .......then look at installed history it probably shows that update as FAILED .......so it keeps trying to install it ......So if you go back to the list of items to be installed and remove that update from the list to be installed and hide it ........those pop-ups should stop .

When your at the update page , you can choose whether or not to install a update ...........when the list is published you can add it to the list to be installed or if its on the list .....click on remove from list .

did you check the installed history to see if its listed as failed ?

That's a good machine, and since you have all the discs it should be no problem. I am assuming you have the RESOURCE CD as well? You have the original CD's for the other software you are running as well?

LET me know when you're ready to do it, and have everything backed up beforehand.

It should take about 3 hours or less including downloading all the Windows updates, etc. and you will just need occasional interaction with the machine.

Does the WIndows XP have service pack 2 on there? If not, you may want to download that and burn it to a CD, along with AdAware, SPYBOT, CCleaner, and Belarc Advisor. You can google for the exact locations. All of the drivers should be on the Resource CD, but here is a link to the Dell page to get the most current ones:

I have a problem the "other guys" are not able to help me with. I am TRYING to run my PC in safe mode, but my PC always freezes up on the the line ending System32/Drivers/Mup.sys. It has stayed on this line for 3 hours. It's definitely frozen and is not coming out of it. What could be causing this and how do I get around it? I am trying to get it UNFROZEN so I can clean out some spyware --

Well, personally I am a fan of format and reinstall if hings are that FUBAR'ed. It will take less time, and unlike the workarounds that may help, this will definitely work.

No one likes to do this, and there may be some glamor in getting a frozen system to come around, but while RELOADING everything, it gives you time to think about using one of those "IMAGE" products - Acronis or Ghost or whatever. You also get time to reflect on the importance of up to date spyware/adware/virus protection which is used, and regular backups. If you have any left over time, you can think about Linux as a substitue for all of this fun.

What does this mean under saved files? Is it the date the file was used or viewed? Or since it's a downloaded MPEG file does it mean the date the video was updated on the original INTERNET site?sheddybear.......Well I dont know what it is your trying to do ....but if you right click on a saved file you should see ...three entries .....

I'm trying to see when a particular video was downloaded on to my computer. I wasn't sure if the "date modified" was the TIME and date it was downloaded. BTW. I tried right clicking on the file and it didn't GIVE me any other info on when it was accessed.Sure - you have to r.click on the file & select Properties...Thanks Dusty ........my fingers can't keep up with my brain.......LOL ......... My laptop is behaving strangely. The display has a large black border round it so the desktop is really small and the colours are not normal. (It looks LIKE safe mode but doesn't have 'safe mode' in the corners). This wouldn't be such a problem but the MOUSE pointer is nowhere to be seen and there's only so much I've managed to do using keyboard shortcuts. I've tried restarting in safe and normal modes and experimenting with display settings but no change. Any ideas?!

Thanks! At the very LEAST you have incorrect VIDEO drivers loaded. What type of video chip is identified? Can you use an external mouse (PS/2 or USB) toget through the rest of the corrections NEEDED?Type dxdiag in the runbox may tell you more.....

i need some major help. i'm suppose to be getting DSL tomorrow but i need to fix this problem first.

when i load up my COMPUTER, it gets to the blue screen saying Windows then takes about a minute and brings up my background but no ICONS or toolbars, and says runtime error 68 ( i think it was 68) i'm able to use control + alt + delete and bring up the end task screen but nothing else. the way i got to my main screen a minute ago was by putting in my windows xp installation disc then using ctrl alt delete, and clicked new task to run my cd, then it brought up the icons finally. so i really need to find out how i could fix this runtime problem. my yahoo brings up a runtime error also when i load it up.

RichardYou can only have one master drive for each IDE CHANNEL. If you can access both drives, you can have other problems, but this is not the way to boot two operating systems (safely). You may not be able to access either one THOUGH, depending on the system.Quote

I have recently downloaded a 30 day trial software and installed it on my computer. Now, I decided not to use it anymore and would like to get rid of it.

So, i did the usual way by going to control panel to add/remove software. What happened was it took too long and ultimately i did ctrl+alt+del to see why it took so long and found it not responding.

Then, I went to my C-drive where the folder is KEPT under and tried to remove it from there (note: i have unchecked my simple file sharing already). Then, i had a message SAYING "cannot delete abc.err: It's being used by another person or program". So, i went to made sure that EVERYTHING related to it was closed. Then, did the same way again, the same message pop up again.

Then, i thought perhaps i should restart my computer. That way, every running programs should be terminated.

Once the computer was back up and running after reboot, i went to remove it from the c-drive. The same message came up again.

Is there anyway of removing this folder?

Thank you in advanceCan you do it in safe mode (F8 when you boot)? Sometimes there are active PORTIONS of code at startup so it cannot be removed when it is running.

If that fails, LOAD the software again, then go to safe mode to remove it, through Add/Remove Programs.What is the name of the software and which operating system are you using?

This is my first time on this forum...I'm glad I've found you!
I am 8 hours in to a problem..
Running xp pro - two os partitions - both with xp
c:play (all the usual stuff)
d: music software
I BOUGHT a new hard drive and ghosted them in
And immediately reencountered a problem I'd first noticed 2 weeks ago - the latest round of windows updates were causing d: to stall on load - black screen, white cursor
I took advice and used FIXMBR from the recovery console - and it sort of fixed things...then it didn;t.
Then I lost access to both c and d
Then I used the console to rebuild bootini
And then used fixmbr and fixboot
And miraculously got back into music (though I think it's now the first partition (is that possible)
And play is inoperable
I've tried fixmbr/fix boot till I'm BLUE...but nothing seems to sort things out
Can anyone suggest what next?

I'm sure it's Norton Ghost..and I know many of you wise folk don't like it, but could you please explain whether it is something to do with the 'keep disc signature' and keep MBR' options in Ghost that are causing me problems with boot.ini and mbr?

If I set up two partitions using XP Pro and then just drop my Ghost images in WITHOUT checking the signature or mbr boxes, will all be well?

I used the XP CD to create partition 1 and installed XP and partition 2, with XP and then one more partition for data.

Having created the partitions 1 and 2 and loaded XP Pro on them...I used Ghost to put my stuff on them and not long after the problems started.

I'm sure the problems are something to do with the options in Ghost to 'restore disc signature' and 'restore disc mbr' which next time round I am going to UNCHECK.

The Ghost help files are absolutely useless in this regard!

This is my first post, so hello everyone!

Anyway, I was trying to install new drivers, also beta testing Windows One Care (not sure if it was the cause).

I uninstalled Nvidia drivers for mobo and graphics card, restarted used driver cleaner in safe mode, couldn't reboot.

I tried safe mode and use old config (instant restart)
so I went into recovery console with XP disk used fixmbr and fixboot, got ntldr missing.

Made UBCD, got into Windows from the CD, used recovery programs till I almost cried, finally got my mbr rid of the nefarious FAT32 format in had someone got ahold of,

Set boot sector properly (I thought) and backup was set to same. Restarted.

Doesnt even get past dmi. Tried Windows install.

When I push R for recovery console, or whatever for install, I get BSOD, when I try to use UBCD to recover again I get same BSOD

Also if it helps loading the XP CD for install without loading raid drivers shows me my 2 drives seperately.

First one as having space of 157GB

Second one unformatted, methinks somehow the testdisk program I used to rewrite mbr did so on the first disk and not the combined raid disk although it correctly identified it as such... hmm.

Sorry again not trying to hijack, maybe someone with some expertise can help us both or maybe you can try my route without making things worse for yourself, the UBCD really helped me. Almost

Are all your drives/partitions FULL formatted?

Every time I try to play a video FILE through Windows Media Player it give me an error and closes. I have to use 2nd and 3rd party programs to play DVD's and media files of most kinds.

I am running Media Player 10. I've tried uninstalling it and REINSTALLING it and even installing version 9, but it won't let me do that either. Nothing seems to work.

If anybody has any ideas please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.

THANKS in Advance I would prefer the third party programs, and you have to have a decoder installed anyway to make it MP work, I believe. I'm sure version 9 was that way.

Now when I TRY to open any Office document it says:

When trying to open New Document from Start menu the like error message appears.
There's no target in the properties of shortcuts.
And target PLACE is not active and inaccessible.

I have a PIIIE 700MHz, 512Mb PC100 SDRAM, 64Mb NVidia Graphics card and 120Gig HDD all running on WIN 98SE...........

All of a sudden with no changes to anything I'm aware of (I do have a 16yr old son!...who swears blind he didn't do anything), has developed a very odd problem.
Whenever entering any text, EITHER search ENGINE or posts, it freezes the browser for anywhere up to a minute before finally chugging along again.

Just NOTED another problem which seems to be related.
I use Memturbo which is now taking up to 30 seconds to load on start up instead of almost instantly like it used to..... also the game Starcraft is now pausing on the menu screen when you start a game whereas before this did not happen.
No other programs appear to be affected
All programs work properly after pause.....very odd
I did run a Hijackthis test.... but being a mechanic not a computer guru really don't understand what it is telling me
I am thinking of purchasing Spycop or the like and trying that

I have two issues which are killing me.
I have a distribution list called "support".
The distribution recipients want to filter all mail sent to "support" to go to a specific folder on thier systems, which is easy using the rules,
BUT..they also want mail sent internally to "support" to go to thier inbox.
How can I get Outlook to recognize internal mails?
I USE exchange server.

The other issue is:
"support" WANTS to reply to outside customers showing that the message is
from "Customer Support" instead of the INDIVIDUAL person who replied to the
message.
I tried to change the display name on the exchange server, but this does not
work.
Also, when the USER tries to "spoof" the "from" in the reply to the customer, it of course bounces back, with the errror that the user does not have PERMISSION to send to that account.
I am thinking I need to create an additional account on exchange, called "Customer Support" and alias it to support.
What do you think?

Hi, I am having real trouble with installing software i download off the internet. It mainly seems to occur with larger companies' software which try to PUT their program commands into the startup folder. At the start of installation, it begins preparing windows installer and stops, displaying the error message:

"Error 1606. Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\."

This then forces me to end the installation. I have followed this on many forum threads on various websites and the problem seems to be originating from the registry folder:

He meant that it shares some of the 256 meg. RAM that is in the machine. It has no RAM just on the card. 64 seems like a lot of shared for that amount of total, usually it's less than half of that, max.

I found out that my computer is low on space on the hard drive (6.03GB) , I have recently installed some browser, to try them out, but this doesn't account for the sudden INCREASE in space usage. After some looking and deleting some folders in my C drive, I discover that one of my folders-Restore- (which is hidden) is using most of my hard drive. It is using over 3 GB of space. How can I go about cleaning this file or part of it from my hard drive, so I can free up some space? It won't let me delete it or part of it, because it has a hidden attribute. I know that some of the files in the folder are totally unnecessary, because Avast did a scan over the folder. Thanks for any ideas.What kind of files are in the Restore folder? I am a real estate agent and need have a letter system that will send ONE letter to past clients each month for 7 years. Can I schedule Outlook to send "letter 1" for this contact on this day, while sending "letter 45" to another client at that same time. I want to schedule sending a letter in the FUTURE and then PROGRESSIVE letters each month. Is there a way to do this in outlook or add on to do it??

I've run into the following strange problem. When trying to launch any .EXE file, Windows will either: say that it does not know how to open the file, or try to load it into Adobe Reader. Thus, Adobe is the only application that will launch, in ADDITION to Explorer.

In safe mode with command line only, most APPLICATIONS will launch, but control panel applets will not - thus it is not possible to roll back using System Restore.

It seems to me that there may be some kind of erraneous file association with .EXE files, but I have no idea where in the registry to start searching for it.

This is not my own computer, but from what I understood the problem appeared after some trouble with installing/uninstalling Norton IS.

Any advice?

I had the Sims 2 DOUBLE Deluxe and a lot of other Sims games on my computer and they were WORKING fine for a while, but then I uninstalled the GAME for some reason (can't really remember, probably because it was taking up too much space). But then I tried to reinstall it, and everything went fine with the installation until I tried to play it and a screen popped up saying that I had the wrong Sims in. I thought it was the disc that was messed up, but it did the same thing for all my other Sims too! And when I went and bought a new Sims2 Double Deluxe it did the same thing.

I ALSO installed a lot of mods when I was playing the game, and then got rid of those, could that be the PROBLEM?

ThanksHate to say it, but it sounds like a compatibility issue. Word 97 and programs from around that time are pretty old compared to the newer versions of Firefox/web content. I think UPGRADING to a newer version of Word would be best. The way they build websites is more complicated and streamlined, and a dated software may not pick up the advanced PROGRAMMING in newer pages like they used to.

In newer version of word, when pasting, you have the option to past text only, keep source formatting, or keep document formatting. Any graphic or image or photo that needs complex editing can benefit from the use of layers. A mask can inhibit or enhance the layer, or some parts of a layer. And a layer can be a mask.

The learning curve for this kind of stuff is steep and has almost nothing to do with the Operating system. Besides Microsoft, Adobe and Coral make powerful image editing engines that can be USING in image editing programs.

If you are sick and tired of Adobe and its high-price collections of bloatware, you may want to take a look at the products from the competition.

GEB44, do you periodically delete old files from the Sent folder? It may be a storage issue causing the problem. If you don't want to delete the old Sent mail copies, make a New Folder and move them to it to free up space in the Sent folder.

i would classify myself a beginner. i'm watching a women's basketball game off the internet. after about 15 minutes the video goes off and the computer screen goes blank although the audio of the game can still be heard. if i go and move the mouse around a little bit everything goes back to normal. a friend of mine SUGGESTED problem may be with my computers hibernation or sleep settings. any suggestions on this?thanks!

This should help.I'd think it is the screensaver settings. Sounds like your screensaver is set to "blank" which is the DEFAULT for Windows. It is probably set up to kick in after 15 minutes of inactivity. Even THOUGH the video is playing, if you do not move the mouse or anything, it will kick in. Any work in the BACKGROUND would still continue as the device doesn't shut anything down except for the screen.Try re-booting the computer in Safe mode and check if that works.

If the problem persist, try using system restore through the SMW COMMAND Prompt. by typing rstrui.exe.

I've the following problem.

I want to let my client pc's dump there images on the server. So for that I've wanted to use "Dos Ghostcast Server".

I've already created a bootable floppy with "Dos Ghostcast Server" on it, but when I boot the floppy and want to enter the "DOSGHSRV FILENAME session [options]" I can't see the client in my "Ghostcast server" on my host.

The bootable floppy doesn't give any errors on start up and I've already checked the drivers of my NETWORK CARD and cable which should be fine.

On the host I've entered a "Session name" and pressed the option "Dump from clients" Then I've browsed for an "Image file" on the "Disk" and after that I've pushed the "ACCEPT clients" button so the client should get connected to the host. Unfortunately this didn't happen.

When I let the client connect to the host when the session on the host is open for clients. I've entered the following command to let the client connect to the host.

DOSGHSRV TEST -D -R

When I did this, I've heard the disk but only the commands on my screen or refreshing.

Would be nice if somebody could help me with my problem.

Last weekend my Windows media player stopped working. It said I needed a dll . I downloaded the dll and saved it and ran it. No results. I was trying to produce a Windows Movie Maker movie for You Tube. Anyway, I couldn't find the answer anywhere on the internet, so I went f10 and reformatted the C drive. When I did this, all of my music, Word files and video files were erased. This had NEVER happened before when I reformatted the C drive.
Anyway, after 2 1/2 days of rebuild, the computer says that I still have these files as I only have 1GB memory available. Where are these files? How can I get them? Why did my computer erase these files or hide them?
How can I get my computer to LIST all of the Word, Power POINT, Music, and Video files that it has hidden?
How do I recover these files or wipe them off of my computer?

Failing all of that, how do I wipe the memory of of my computer so that I can reinstall Windows XP? Steps?
