Solve : Fresh WinME Install? |
Answer» I have an OLDER laptop with only a 2Gig HD. I wanted to do a FRESH install of ME, in order to delete all the crap that I've accumulated over time. I have an older laptop with only a 2Gig HD. I wanted to do a fresh install of ME, in order to delete all the crap that I've accumulated over time. Are you sure that it is only a 2 GB hard-drive, or has someone used fdisk and forgotten to Enable Large Drive Support? If the fdisk program is used without enabling Large Drive Support you will only have 2 GB showing, even on a 10 GB drive. It seems odd to find ME installed on a 2 GB drive which was the standard largest drive available for Windows 3.1 running on FAT16 |

Solve : Windows for workgroups incompatible dos? |
Answer» Ive recently installed WFW 3.11 and when i try to start up it COMES up with the message: "you started your computer with a version of ms-dos thats incompatible with this version of windows" then stops and you have to restart. I can guarantee it will run on 6.22. I still use Dos 6.22 & WFW 3.11 for the "auld" times. All MS-DOS versions are still copyright to Microsoft so where can they be downloaded??? Can't mention on open forum I just CHECKED mine... DOS 6.22 + Enhanced Tools is 3 floppies. Windows 3.11 WfW is 8 floppies. Some 15Mbs all up. The good old days. I'm sure they are available... |

Solve : help please (update related)? |
Answer» Red.....You didnt mention the O/S ......I'm guessing its XP ......... and I'm also guessing the message about the office works ...prompts you to put the install cd in the drive .........( which you may not have ) ......So if you go the MS UPDATE page and let it scan the PC .......then look at installed history it probably shows that update as FAILED .......so it keeps trying to install it ......So if you go back to the list of items to be installed and remove that update from the list to be installed and hide it ........those pop-ups should stop . |

Solve : OUTLOOK QUESTION? |
Answer» GREETINGS, I have a question/problem. I have a laptop & desktop computer. I've been playing with the Outlook program, scheduling appts. My problem is that I'd like to transfer one Outlook Calendar or scheduled Appt from my desktop to laptop or vice versa & send this to either computer. Does ANYONE know how I could do this or is it possible? Thank you What OS are you running? Using Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express? I'll take a guess and say it's XP and MS Outlook. Two easiest ways: 1. Purchase a SERIAL cable (provided both systems have serial port active) or use a network connection (provided one exists!) and use the files and SETTINGS transfer wizard. 2. Use the Export function under 'Files' in Outlook and export names, address and calendar. 'Import to another program or file' then use the .PST format. Save the file to wherever you want. Attach this file to an email or save to disc and send it/install it to the other pc. hth. |

Solve : Microsoft Paint? |
Answer» That's a good machine, and since you have all the discs it should be no problem. I am assuming you have the RESOURCE CD as well? You have the original CD's for the other software you are running as well? I run Norton, MS Antispyware along with AVG on DSL. Running Norton Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Virus at the same TIME can cause conflicts in the system. It is highly advised to remove one of these programs. It you retain Norton make sure that there is nothing listed in the file exclusion list. The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder will find the Office key for you, if it is still on the drive. Solve : Swapping HD? |
Answer» Hi, I have a silly question. How come when I swap a hard drive from one computer to the other, the other computer doesn't see it? Both HDs are installed with W2K and both drives are master drives. Are these OEM computers with tattoed hard-drives? If so the drive info will probably have to tie in with the BIOS info, so each drive is PARTICULAR to the machine it was originally FITTED in. |

Solve : MBR bootini boot problems - please help!? |
Answer» Hi there, I think I'm just going to have to reformat and reinstall everything. How are these two drives partitioned and where are the two operating systems placed?I simply used XP to CREATE partition 1...with XP and partition 2...with XP and then one more partition for data. Having created the partitions 1 and 2 and loaded XPPro on them...I used Ghost to put my stuff on them... ..and not long after the problems started... ...and I'm sure the problems are something to do with the options in GHost to 'restore disc signature' and 'restore disc mbr'....which next time round I am going to UNCHECK. The ghost help files are absolutely useless in this regard! Thanks Mac PI have a similar problem I don't want to hijack your thread so I'll be brief: This is my first post, so hello everyone! anyway, I was trying to install new drivers, also beta testing windows one care (not sure if it was cause) I uninstalled nvidia drivers for mobo and grahpics card, restarted used driver cleaner in safe mode, couldn't reboot I tried safe mode and use old config (instant restart) so i went into recovery console with xp disk used fixmbr and fixboot, got nstldr missing made ubcd http://www.ubcd4win.com/ got into windows off CD, used recovery programs till i almost cried, finally got my mbr rid of the nefarious fat32 format in had someone got ahold of, set boot sector properly i thought and backup was set to same, restarted.... doesnt even get past dmi tried windows install.... when i push r for recovery console or whatever for install i get bsod, when i try to use ubcd to recover again i get same bsod " A thread tried to release a resource it did not own" the stop is 0x000000E3 (0x866097a8, 0x867c8da8, 0x00000000, 0x00000002) simple question... is it time to reformat? anyway specs are.... xp (of course) amd 3700 64 1gig patriot ram 2,2,2,5 dfi lanparty ultra-d mobo bfg 6800gt v-card nec 3520a dvd-rw sony cdrw/dvd fsb 450watt psu and most impotantly 2 80gb hitatchi sata-2 drives set in raid-0 also if it helps loading the xp cd for install without loading raid drivers shows me my 2 drives seperately first one as having space of 157gb second one unformated, me thinks somehow the testdisk program i used to rewrite mbr did so on the first disk and not the combined raid disk although it correctly identified it as such... hmm sorry again not trying to hijack, maybe someone with some expertise can help us both or maybe you can try my route without making things worse for yourself, the ubcd really helped me... almostQuote I used the XP CD to create partition 1 and installed XP and partition 2, with XP and then one more partition for data. Ok, so when I do it I create a Primary C: partition and I am very careful to use the same sizing, either 8192 MB (8 GB) or 10240 MB (10 GB) so that any image made from the drive goes back to a drive of exactly the same size or bigger. (Smaller doesn't work.) I only ever use FULL formatting in preparing any drive partition. (I ONLY use quick formatting when deleting all files from a non-boot partition inside of Windows when the computer is running from the desktop. After creating the Primary and installing, I use XP's Disk Management to make an Extended partition using the rest of the drive space and then, as with your case, make two Logical drives within the Extended partition D: and E: I never have any connection to the internet when doing ANY of this work, even when restoring a day-old image as, at the instant of connecting, you can trap a virus. Immediately the connection is made the FIRST thing is to update the Anti-Virus program and run a FULL scan. I don't use Ghost as I have heard of too many problems, and I believe that there are Ghost forae which deal with them, as I prefer to use Image for Windows / Image for DOS from TeraByte Unlimited with which I have never had a problem to date. I agree with you, I think that you are going to have to do it all again with NEW partitions and FULL formatting before restoring the image when OFF-Line. Not too bad when using an image, just the usual pain when it has gone wrong. Other things to consider are. Is there any possibility of read errors when restoring the image? Have you run a test on the RAM and used the manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette on the drive, even if new. (?)Quote I have a similar problem, I don't want to hijack your thread so I'll be brief. First Google hit STOP 0x000000E3 RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED Are all your drives/partitions FULL formatted? Quote
yes, I have the one single raid-0 drive and that is all, the entire drive is formatted. I tried using apr and disk recover, plus several other programs all which correctly identify my drive, enable me to look through the files and reset the mbr and partition and what not, but I can never get past the DMI on a regular boot... Any ideas?I find it is better to stick with basic volumes. RAID arrays are too complex and prone to the sort of failure you are experiencing. |

Solve : Microsoft Windows Media Player..I need Help Please? |
Answer» Every time I try to play a video FILE through Windows Media Player it give me an error and closes. I have to use 2nd and 3rd party programs to play DVD's and media files of most kinds. what error does it display.........update codecs..... The message is "Windows Media Player has encountered an error and must shut down. We are sorry for your INCONVENIENCE." I like to use Media Player because up until now it has always been a very good program. If you have a suggestion as to a better Media Player please suggest away LOL. Thanks The message is "Windows Media Player has encountered an error and must shut down. We are sorry for your inconvenience what does it say......^.besides the above.^It asks me if I want to send an error report to Microsoft and I usually CLICK on "Don't Send". It doesn't give any pertinent information at all.It wouldn't be such a pain but every time I receive a video file through email I have to go through with saving it and opening it with something different instead of just clicking on it to open it. I don't know if that makes any sense or not but anyway. What other third-programs do you use! was this downloading via the net.......or burnt to disk......I've been playing video with ATI Multimedia Center. Some of the files are downloaded and some are burnt to disk.So what third party software do you use for DVD - WinDVD, etc.ULEAD DVD PlayerAnd is it all updated? Does it work correctly?Everything works and is as up to date as I know how to make it. I suppose I'll just continue to do things the way I have been. Thanks for trying guys. |

Solve : Activate Windows Screen Freezes (XP) Home ed? |
Answer» Quote I can't believe it. XP Crashed again. OK, so what happened this time? Loose wiring? RAM/Cards need re-seating? Fans not running? Not only did I reformat, I repartioned first. Then I reformated and did the recovery. I ran and emergency boot CD I found online that does a check on all the hardware. I have gone through xp set up so many times about 8 or 9 times now. I am going to give Microsoft a call back. Emachines still thinks that it is my hardware, maybe the mother board. If this is the case. Why does everything appear fine in safe mode. I went out and bought a certification book for the 70-270 EXAM. Maybe I can get in through sysprep and make changes in the answer files myseslf. Then run the setup right from my harddrive. The sysprep log was saying that there was an error in loading factory.exe. Maybe with this INFORMATION. Windows will let me in on how to get it to work without having to go through emachines. I will never buy a computer again that does not come with the Windows XP set up cds.Quote
I did take everything apart and put it back in, made sure it was tight. Checked all the cords, took out the memory card and put it back in tight. Made sure all of the power cords and wires were in right. Both fans are running, Keyboard and mouse cords are fine. I wonder if it is the ide cord. I should get a new one and see if that is the problem I had the same problem and downloaded a program called win PATROL. It ALLOWED me to configure my start-up processes and I have had no problems rebooting since. Also if you reconfigured your bios did you check the jumpers on the hard drive itself? You might try going back to DEFAULT settings and trying this program its free. And if you install a new program it will ask if you want it running on start up most time you can start programs manually.Quote I wonder if it is the IDE cord. I should get a new one and see if that is the problem. Cord? If you have round ones they can give cross-talk data corruption. The flat 80-wire IDE cables are screened, as 40 of those wires are screening wires. The wire itself has less resistance/better conductivity so they are a little faster. (Every little bit helps.) I am back! Last night I again went through every peice of hardware. On my last check I noticed that the modem was not there. I had took it out to use the pci space for my firewire card. Found the modem, connected it to the phone line, started over with the Factory restore. and we are back up and running. Had a little trouble cleaning up NAV. After reinstalling it the 3rd time, its working. I am almost there. Got to reinstall firewire card, wireless keyboard and mouse and put in the second memory stick, software and find all my backed up files. That book I bought is really good for troubleshooting. My husband (AS400 Programmer)hit the on his first thought. "It sounds like you are missing the connection to the internet." So the activation screen was not responding because of no connection. Why is that 2 company's tech support didn't catch that. Emachines was telling me I had a worm. The files he was talking about in my start up were the nvidia control panel and wizards. I am better now. Thanks for listening! Quote I will never buy a computer again that does not come with the Windows XP set up CDs. Me neither.I wonder why they never made desktop computers more like a TV. Just the one box instead of several. |

Solve : Problems Defraging? |
Answer» hello, Try in safe mode, but which OS is this? Sorry WAT do you mean by OS? I'm using window XP, pent 4......hello, i tried booting up in safe mode but nothing shows up? ocean02 Quote i tried booting up in safe mode but nothing shows up? Did you get into safe mode ? dl65 How much time did you wait after you first was "Not responding" in the Task Manager. Sometimes it comes for few minutes.RUN through the cleanup procedure on the link at the bottom of this post and try defrag again. You may have a virus so use the on-line scanner and do a full scan. If you still have problems type - cmd - in the Run window and then type - chkdsk - at the prompt. You should have 4096 bytes per allocation unit, if formatted to NTFS, and there should be no bad clusters... E.G. You need 15% free-space on the drive to be able to run defrag. OS = Operating System. Whether it is Home or Pro you can also install Diskeeper 9 Professional (30-day evaluation) and use the Frag-Shield tool to see if your Master File Tables (MFTs) need adjusting. Quote How much time did you wait after you first was "Not responding" in the Task Manager. I think about half minute SEQUEL...was alternating between responding and not responding...Quote Run through the cleanup procedure on the link at the bottom of this post and try defrag again..... I will try the above....Hope it solves the problem Also which virus online scanner is the best to use? Try running MemTest86 as well, as a fault in the RAM could produce such an effect. Running the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic diskette is also worthwhile to eliminate basic data corruption problems. Some IDE cables (round) can produce cross-talk data corruption. Click on the link below and you'll find an on-line scanner.Hello I have run the cdm and it looks like below...there were file that needed recovery...i will run the defrag now I'm actually using Mcafee virus scan...and it has ondemand scan that i use every week..... C:\Documents and Settings\owmer>^P hello, i used ccleaner to clean the system....and defrag is working....but kinds slow...i will also CONDUCT a memory check thanks for all the help so far...very much appreciated i will also run safe mode to see if that boots up now hehe...80 wire IDE cables can help as 40 of the wires act as earthed screens between pairs of conductors designed to eliminate cross-talk when wires are too close together. The net effect is to prevent data corruption which can lead to many of these file problems. So if your IDE cables are 40 wire, or round, it is worthwhile changing them. On the defrag question, if the Master File Tables are too small then there will always be a problem with defrag. Diskeeper 9 Professional (not the home version)(15 day evaluation) comes packaged with frag-shield which will re-size the MFTs if this is needed. thanks...i will look into it |

Answer» Hi, I am having real trouble with installing software i download off the internet. It mainly seems to occur with larger companies' software which try to PUT their program commands into the startup folder. At the start of installation, it begins preparing windows installer and stops, displaying the error message: ... Suggestion: Use Windows update to download and install Service Pack 2, because many bugs (yours might be one) were fixed with that SP. Best regards, Doc Hey guys, I have looked on google and gone onto the install shield website but my registry seems ok :-/ Tried to install a game today and got the same message so it is still a problem. Im going to look into sp2 but there seems to be a compatability issue with my computer (hp) as i have downloaded sp2 twice and both times i have had to start the computer up in safe mode and use system restore. Will post back any further developments...Hi i have managed to find a manual download of sp2 and it is working apart from the firewall which wont turn on and constantly asks me wether i want to turn ICS on. As regards to the game i still cant install them. Anyone have any other ideas? |

Solve : RAM reduced??? |
Answer» My note book is Pentium 4 2.00 GHz, installed 256 RAM and run on Wind XP Pro. My notebook is a 2.0 GHz Pentium 4, with 256MB of RAM installed using Windows XP Pro. Your notebook has shared video RAM. 256 -192= 64 MB If you will say what the make and model of your notebook is then we can maybe do more. If you look up the make and model on the Crucial website you'll find out just how much RAM you can install. Usually, adding another 256 MB module (if POSSIBLE) should cure all the other problems. If the manufacturer offers a separate video module then you can recover the 64 MB used by the video system, but it is very unlikely that they will do so with a notebook as the internal space is limited. No harm in asking though. Really this is something you need to ascertain before purchase, asking the question "Is the video memory inclusive (shared) or exclusive (separate) from the system memory." Thanks Mac, My notebook is compaq nx9000. Do u means that my video card may have no ram ??He meant that it shares some of the 256 meg. RAM that is in the machine. It has no RAM just on the card. 64 seems like a lot of shared for that amount of TOTAL, usually it's less than half of that, max. With most desktop computers, the system has a video card that handles the graphics independently and has its own memory. You don't have a video card; your notebook PC has the graphics processor incorporated on the motherboard itself. It has no memory module of its own, and takes what it requires from your system memory. To check the size of your PAGE file (virtual memory), click Start--> right-click My Computer -->Properties-->Advanced --> under Performance, click Settings --> Advanced --> Change. It should be set to about 384MB.check the page file/and system restore......HP Compaq nx9000 Business Notebook Memory Standard 128 MB (266 MHz) DDR SDRAM (128 MB SODIMM in slot 1) or 256 MB (266 MHz) DDR SDRAM (256 MB SODIMM in slot 1) or 512 MB (266 MHz) DDR SDRAM (512 MB SODIMM in slot 1) Maximum 1 GB (266 MHz) DDR SDRAM (512MB (266 MHz) in slot 1 and 2) NOTE: 128MB of DDR (16MB standard shared video memory). Solve : need space on laptop? |
Answer» I found out that my computer is low on space on the hard drive (6.03GB) , I have recently installed some browser, to try them out, but this doesn't account for the sudden INCREASE in space usage. After some looking and deleting some folders in my C drive, I discover that one of my folders-Restore- (which is hidden) is using most of my hard drive. It is using over 3 GB of space. How can I go about cleaning this file or part of it from my hard drive, so I can free up some space? It won't let me delete it or part of it, because it has a hidden attribute. I know that some of the files in the folder are totally unnecessary, because Avast did a scan over the folder. Thanks for any ideas. What kind of files are in the Restore folder? System, data, etc...What make/model of computer and what operating system. Do you have a Windows CD or a restore CD if you ever need to reinstall? It is a laptop that only has 6.03GB on the hard drive. That file that is hidden is labeled 'Restore'. It say in the proberties that it has a size of 3.30GB, containing 14,913 files, 5 folders. The five folders are labeled 'Discfg, Srdiskid, VxDon.cfg, VxDon. When I open them up it tells me if I want to open a DAT file. I am not sure what these mean. Could they refer to my System Restore? SOMEONE told me how I can adjust my System Restore. This may help, if that is the problem. Because I can not restore using my System Restore. Why? I don't know. But could this be the beast of the problem? If it is, I got to get into it so I can adjust the settings. Any ideas. I am using the Windows ME operation system. I am in the process of doing another Scan Disk and Defragmenting. Thanks again. If you have a bootable Windows CD AND you are sure these files are not necessary or usable, then you can delete the partition and creat one 6 gig partition, and make it ACTIVE to hold your new Windows installation.Quote It is a laptop that only has 6.03GB on the hard drive. That file that is hidden is labeled '_RESTORE'. Windows ME You can delete the entire folder from an ME bootdiskette. Boot on the diskette and get to the DOS prompt and then type... A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE and press Enter. Answer Yes to deleting all subfolders. Your _RESTORE folder may well have been corrupted by a virus, a common occurance with Windows ME. If you go to www.burzurq.com and download Delindex.bat directly to your ME bootdiskette you can also run... A:\>delindex run , which will remove a lot of old junk files and renew the index.dat files. If you then follow up by running... A:\>scandisk /all /surface just to check that all is alright you can then rundefrag in safe mode. When you re-boot to the desktop the entire system should be running better. Then take a look in msconfig to see if System Restore is actually running and, if it is, make a new Restore point manually. When I used ME I finally disabled System Restore and relied on a drive image which was a lot more successful. It meant that the system had more freely available system resources and ran as well as Windows '98, especially after fitting 512 MB of RAM.I am THINKING about getting an external hard drive. Will that solve the problem. Solve : Windows will not launch applications? |
Answer» I've run into the following strange problem. When trying to launch any .EXE file, Windows will either: say that it does not know how to open the file, or try to load it into Adobe Reader. Thus, Adobe is the only application that will launch, in ADDITION to Explorer. |

Solve : Sims 2 Disc Not Reading? |
Answer» I had the Sims 2 DOUBLE Deluxe and a lot of other Sims games on my computer and they were WORKING fine for a while, but then I uninstalled the GAME for some reason (can't really remember, probably because it was taking up too much space). But then I tried to reinstall it, and everything went fine with the installation until I tried to play it and a screen popped up saying that I had the wrong Sims in. I thought it was the disc that was messed up, but it did the same thing for all my other Sims too! And when I went and bought a new Sims2 Double Deluxe it did the same thing. |

Solve : LovingOS? |
Answer» Choose your favorite OS in the list. Love the use of "Type" to refer to different OS's. All major consumer Operating Systems are Protected-Mode, multi-user Operating Systems. They aren't different types.Older REFERENCES will identify Windows 2000 as 5 types of Operating systems So it is one product that meets the criteria of five types of things that nit does. Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 29, 2011, 12:54:26 AM Older references will identify Windows 2000 as 5 types of Operating systems It is a Protected-Mode, Multi-user Operating System. I think I accidentally got the ISO for Mother Loving OS, which is rather unstable and crashes a lot. It's sort of like trying to run and use Unity on Ubuntu, except there isn't a cloud of frothing advocates telling me that I'm just using it wrong and don't understand the paradigm.Quote from: patio on November 29, 2011, 09:49:01 AM I DLoaded and installed LovingOS in a VM...gotta say i'm Loving it...Quote Lovingos - Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libreQuote Lovingos - Wikipedia, la enciclopedia libre How did i know this would happen ? ? Quote I DLoaded and installed LovingOS in a VM...gotta say i'm Loving it...Didn't know it was an OS, but then. I've chose it because of the poll's subject. "Windows-type OSes (Win32)" ? You know eventually 64Bit will be the minimum standard. The only reason why it isn't yet (years after prediction that it would be) Is because of hardware drivers and some games. Obviously all Windows users would prefer the better 64Bit if all worked without hitch. Since you don't have that option to choose from above, I'll have to say 'else'.Quote from: kimsland on November 29, 2011, 05:27:31 PM "Windows-type OSes (Win32)" ?Point well made. There are good reasons to favor the 64 bit systems from now on. All the new software is ingoing to be better non 64 bit. The AMD and Intel extensions to the INSTRUCTION set are more that just big memory space. It makes a difference in any graphic intenser task.I could have swore I voted in this poll. What happened to my vote for Don't like OSes? |

Solve : I can´t copy/paste text with format? |
Answer» Hello I have WINDOS XP Pro SP2 Hate to say it, but it sounds like a compatibility issue. Word 97 and programs from around that time are pretty old compared to the newer versions of Firefox/web content. I think upgrading to a newer version of Word would be best. Err... according to their post it works fine with word 97, but it doesn't work with libreoffice.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice Quote LibreOffice (pronounced /ˌliː.brəˈɒ.fɪs/) is a free and open source office suite DEVELOPED by The Document Foundation as a fork of OpenOffice.org. It is largely compatible with other major office suites, including Microsoft Office, Maybe it is a change in FireFox. What version do you now have? What did you have two or three months ago? You might try and older version. http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.phpQuote from: Jota on December 08, 2011, 01:45:40 PM Hello I have Windos XP Pro SP2 Well for starters you could finish running Windows Update. Since you aren't completely up to date there then I will assume that you haven't run all of the updates for MS Office. Why is everybody fixating on Office 97? According the the Original post, it works fine in Office 97. It's LibreOffice where it doesn't work. Which doesn't surprise me. It's probably a bug or "known issue" in LibreOffice that they marked as "Won't Fix" ages ago.hi, you have to change some internet explorer setting please see the solution with pic as below http://www.techyv.com/questions/how-copypaste-text-and-graphics-website |

Solve : Email in Outbox? |
Answer» When I send an email, it goes but remains in the outbox and gets resent each time I send ANOTHER email. It does not move to the sent BOX. I also get an error message, but it is blank. Using Outlook Express and Windows XP. How long have you used Outlook Express? I'd endorse this. Outlook Express STRUGGLES with large storage files (that accumulate over time). Consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail for XP: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail-xp Or even better, try something like Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/Quote from: TulsaRose on December 12, 2011, 02:10:22 AM You first need to determine if you are using Outlook OR Outlook Express. Quote from: GEB44 on December 10, 2011, 11:16:54 AM Using Outlook Express and Windows XP. Rob, just trying to clarify the three references made by the OP. Quote from: TulsaRose on December 12, 2011, 11:16:59 AM Rob, just trying to clarify the three references made by the OP.I believe Rob knows that, so why the post? By the way, there are really only two distinct references in the parts you HIGHLIGHTED. The two parts you circled in red are always the same. Wow, guess this is the wrong forum for me if this how a member is treated who is merely trying to assist another member. TulsaRose, I'm not sure what you mean. The OP said right at the start that the program was Outlook Express. All email clients have an "Outbox"... My posts above were intended to clarify, not to insult or offend you, but I do apologise if they seemed in any way hurtful. All efforts at assistance are appreciated; just sometimes careful guidance is needed to ensure we're focussing on the correct aspects of a problem. Cheers, Rob |

Solve : Cannot run chkdsk/r Its never runs after reboot?nce? |
Answer» Hi and THANKS in advaBoot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /R If for some reason that is not possible, do this: right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot. This is what I have done and the last time it denied me access... THANKSOkay TRIED it again this time it said do you want to run after reboot or something like that I chose Y for yes and hit enter then rebooted waiting for it to reboot now... BRB THANKSI also always have two popups that says : End Program - rundll32.exe hmnm? THANKSQuote from: beardbuster on December 13, 2011, 09:29:37 AM I also always have two popups that says :You need to explain your problem(s) in detail. Your one sentence posts are not helpful. If you want intelligent assistance you need to provide as much information as you can...whenever I reboot the following popup box appears: --->End Program - rundll32.exe <--- Also as stated I did as you asked but chkdsk /r does not run after reboot... it never does...Boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r from there. As for the other problem, try the instructions below. Until or unless you provide more information this is the best I can do. Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming PROCEDURE, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem. After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs. THANKS Allen I'll do as you have asked and post my results here... |

Solve : HD showing full? |
Answer» Quote from: mnkypprs on December 15, 2011, 01:57:47 PM when you tell someone your question is why your computer is reading an empty drive as full..and they tell you the drive is too small, the credibility fails. And ive seen his posts on other threads... what he might have in experience, he lacks in forum side manners. He does not lack anything in manners, and yours are very poor, it seems to me. 32GB is very small these days. I appreciate the support & KIND words ST, but let's let it go. The problem is solved - that's all that matters.Quote from: mnkypprs on December 15, 2011, 01:57:47 PM she doesnt NEED a larger hd for what she uses the computer for. she just needs to stop storing all her music on there, and she needs to adjust the norton backup, if not get a diff means of backup altogether. Isn't that sort of a contradiction of terms? If she is using it to store all her music, than clearly a larger HD would be required for what she uses it for, because one of those uses is storing music, which is a not UNCOMMON requirement these days for most users. 32GB, by today's standards, is a small drive, no question about it; should all the space have been used with what was installed? No. But at no point did anybody suggest that was the cause of the problem. They were suggestions provided in addition to more direct advice, such as the info the clean temp files and disable System Restore, and use WinDirStat. The point being made was that a 32GB drive is going to fill up a lot faster than a more typically sized drive for today's use cases. Your response is basically "They don't need a larger drive, they just need to stop using the drive they have to store files" which seems a tad silly. Notes for the future: 1.It helps to know what Operating SYSTEMS you (or they, or whomever) are using. 2.If the drive is 32GB, it's probably a few years old, too. (As a drive ages the chances it will FAIL catastrophically rise)- just something to consider. If they are making backups presumably they do have data they would rather not lose. 3.I've never seen a iTunes (or any music player) Library that was "hidden". The Default Location that iTunes stores it's music is in the My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music folder; (My Music might be titled 'Music' depending on OS, bringing us back to point 1. I've not seen it actually "Hidden", though. Quote when you tell someone your question is why your computer is reading an empty drive as full..and they tell you the drive is too small, the credibility fails.Except your, or their, computer wasn't reading an empty drive as full. It was reading a full drive as full. The drive was full because the user of the machine had the audacity to store music on their system. (paired with a badly configured and even pointless backup configuration). |

Solve : Can't find my lost files that my computer says are still there? |
Answer» Last weekend my Windows media player stopped working. It said I needed a dll . I downloaded the dll and saved it and ran it. No results. I was trying to produce a Windows Movie Maker movie for You Tube. Anyway, I couldn't find the answer anywhere on the internet, so I went f10 and reformatted the C drive. When I did this, all of my music, Word files and video files were erased. This had NEVER happened before when I reformatted the C drive. |
