Solve : frozen on startup?

Answer»

I had a virus that made my computer really slow, CPU usage would go to 100% for like 5 minutes when I started up and it was because I had like 20 services.exe's. and I couldn't look at any images on any webpage, it would just be an x, and a lot of programs wouldnt' even open like firefox and spybot from what I can remember. But now when I boot up its just frozen. I can move the MOUSE but not click anything or type anything. Does anyone know how I can fix this without REFORMATTING? This is windows XP by the way.

oh and I'm obviously typing this from another computer. How did you clean your computer?Did you clean your computer like SuperDave asked / do you have stuff you can't do without, if not then reformatting may be the only 'clean' way to GET you back up and running.

I worked on a system today that was so bad the only thing I could do was to wipe and REINSTALL.
Alan <>< How do you delete EVERYTHING. My windows wont start up so i want to delete everything and start over all i need to have on my computer is 2 programs anyways so i can just reinstall them easy.duo1337

Solve : how to make environment setting take effect without rebooting the system??

Answer»

hi buddies,

after editing the environment variables we do have to reboot the system to make changes take effect. Is there any way where no need of rebooting the system after such changes?

regards
sanwhat do you mean by environment setting?environment variables
in fact, i explained it alreadyEnvironment variables are READ during a boot. As FAR as I KNOW I don't think you can FORCE the machine to read them again without a reboot.

I think he's talking about a way so Windows doesn't need to restart when you install something, for example Microsoft Net FRAMEWORK needs a restart after installation.

I think I've heard of a way to do that but I will have to find it...actually i am in doubt that it might be possible by running autoexec.bat each time when environment variable are changed.
I checked Google (link) and found this:

http://www.autosensing.com/Information/Restart%20Your%20Computer%20Without%20Actually%20Having%20to%20Restart.htm

I'm not sure if this will work or not. It might mess up the computer but the steps sound familiar...

Anyone else know about this?Carbon Dudeoxide that will refresh your screen and some of the system but I don't think it will refresh the environment variables. He can try it and see.

By the way these are your environment variables....

Solve : Dual-Boot Won't Boot Into Windows?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home on the #1 drive and Ubuntu 8 on the #2 drive and this has worked perfectly since late April. But recently the system has been unable to BOOT into Windows. It will boot into Unbuntu properly.

If I select Windows I will get as far as the black Windows logo start-up screen but then it just stalls out. It doesn't matter if I select "Normal Start" or "Last Good Config" or "Safe Mode". It always stalls at the same place during the boot.

When I am in Linux and try to look at the Windows drive, I get a MESSAGE that says that the drive wasn't properly un-mounted. When I use my Partition Magic rescue diskettes, I see a note for Error # 1516.

Yesterday the problem seemed to go away after using the PQ Magic diskettes. I was able to access the #1 drive from Linux and save some files. But when I tried to boot into Windows the same stalling thing happened. And then when I went back into Linux, I could no longer access the #1 drive.

I know that everything is still there on the #1 drive, I just have a booting-up problem.

I have been doing some reading on the 1516 error and it seems that all the fixes for it need me to be in Windows to use them. But I can't get into Windows. Somewhere I read where someone commented that he formatted his drive but the problem remained. I tried to fix the drive using CHKDSK from the Windows recovery console. It told me that there are errors but it refused to let me use the /f switch.

I have been holding back on using the FIXBOOT command until I learn if there is something else I can try.

I consider myself a moderately-skilled COMPUTER user and I am out of ideas for this.

Is there something I can do to re-enable Windows on my system?

you could put your hdd into another computer as a secondary drive and copy what you need offa itI dont understand. do you have two hard drives? Or do you have one that has each O.S. on different partitions?I have two hard drives. Windows is on the #1 and Ubuntu on #2.Try unplugging the Ubuntu drive and setting the Windows drive as master and only drive on that channel. If this doesnt work, then get out your windows CD and be prepaired to do a repair installation.necessary windows files can corrupt EASILY.... the only option may be repair installation. do you know how to do this?

Solve : Hanging and Delayed Write Failed Message?

Answer»

I started to recently have a problem with my computer. It has been occuring for a few days now. My computer seems to 'hang' (or pause) for about 5 seconds every 30 seconds or so, consistently. When it pauses I am able to move the mouse around the screen and thats about it. Also, I have received a few "Delayed Write Failed" messages that popped up from my toolbar. Another symptom occured when I was trying to save a MICROSOFT word document. After I clicked save a msg popped up saying that there was no space left on the drive and that the document couldn't save. After attempting to save the file 5 times it finally saved. I know I have plenty of space left on my HD (60GB free on a 160GB).
Anyway, I ran adware and anti-virus software and they came back clean. I have researched my problem over the internet and I haven't found the exact probrem but similar ones. I am thinking it is a HARDWARE problem at this point. Possibly faulty RAM? I am also using a Geforce 8600 graphics card, I was thinking about just running the onboard video to see if the problem persists. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it. Let me know if you need any specific system information. Thanks for your time.Try to run checkdisk

Sometimes the empty space can be miss reported...

Running checkdisk should see the open space.

What version of Windows are you running?

Windows XP SP2..

Not familiar with checkdisk. How do I run it? What does it do exactly? Here is a overview....

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

In a nutshell it does what its named for...it checks out your hard drive for errors...

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.

2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.

3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that SHOWS the Check disk options is displayed,

4. Use one of the following procedures:
• To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
• To repair errors without SCANNING the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the

Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Thanks for the help spoiler but unfortunately that wasn't the solution. I ran the chkdsk at startup. If anyone has any other possible solutions for the pauses and delayed write failed messages that I am receiving please let me know. Thanks. Can you post more information about your computer? What are the hardware specs.? What antivirus software are you running?

What are computer temperatures?Didn't try safe mode yet. However, I restarted the computer after it was on for a couple hours to get a CPU temp reading in the BIOS. Immediately the CPU temp read 66 degrees celcius then dropped to 60 degrees celcius after a minute or so in the BIOS. Also, I observed that the default turn-off CPU temp was set at 80 degrees celcius so I assume the temp is fine.Your AMD processor max. temps are listed at 65C-72C.
60, or 66C for idle computer is way too high, and I bet this is your problem.I agree...way to hot. You will want to open your machine and blow all the dust with a can of compressed air. Don't blow onto the fan for the CPU.

Take the CPU fan off and add a new layer of THERMAL paste and reset the fan back onto the CPU. Start the machine again and post the new temp.

I actually vacuumed some dust out of my machine last night. And oops.. i didnt know u shouldnt blow on the cpu fan. Whats wrong with that? I blew on the fan and the cooling fins while i had the vacuum running next to it. I forgot to check the new temp after vacuuming so ill check that and post it later today. Also, I know my 350W power supply is at the low-end amount of power my computer needs. Could this be part of the problem? I'm constantly checking the temp with my hand where the air is getting blown out from the power supply and it stays pretty cool.Vacuum = Tons of static...

1. Go to a shop and pay a obscene amount of money for x-p to be reinstalled.

2. Go buy the windows x-p CD which isn't much by the way , and either reinstall windows x-p your self or perform a windows fix with the CD.

No matter what your going to need the cd in the future , and it saves taking your harddive down to a computer shop as well. Hi thanks again last question when i buy a cd is that the xp cd with the product key number, or do i get the cd and use my number thats on the side of my computer please let me know and ill go on ebay, thanx robAnother alternative is borrow a friends cd / run the restore option & use your product ID.

Solve : very low System Idle Process mem usage?

Answer»

I have a Compaq with Intel Celeron processor, 564MHz, 320MB of RAM, XP Pro, Serv. Pack 2. My System Idle Process mem usage stays at 16k. BitDefender, WinPatrol, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware all scan clean. I'm currently at 28k and my other computer is also at 16k.

Perfectly normal.Oh! THANK you. I see all these ppl complaining their idel process runs in the 90%'s, and are told that's good. Then, I guess I'm finally in pretty good shape. Yeah.

For example, my System Idle Process is currently at 91% which pretty much means that the computer is only using 9% of the processor's full potential.Well, I see a lot of spiking in the BitDefender net zone window, so I thought I might have a leak. I am learning, but FAR to go. Side note: if another process is taking up, say, 15% of your CPU Usage, it means it's taking up 15%, not 85%. How bout over 61,000K for firefox, over 30,000K for Explorer EXE? My CPU usually runs in the high 90%. Right now, it's running lower than usual. It spikes a lot; just now hit 100% My current firefox session is 86,000k which isn't good at all, but it STILL works fine.
Explorer.exe is at 28,000k.

The CPU Usage % is determined by what you are doing on the computer. For example, an antivirus scan may bring your usage up 70-100%. Even streaming videos on YouTube can make it hover around 40%.
Whether this is good or not is determined on your Processor and how much RAM you have.

Quote

564MHz, 320MB of RAM, XP Pro, Serv. Pack 2.
XP really needs at least 512mb to run flawlessly but it is RECOMMENDED you have at least 1GB of RAM so you can use numerous programs and application (like Firefox is taking up 80MB of RAM for me).
AS for the processor, there isn't really much we can do here if it's a Laptop but if it's a desktop computer, it can be changed.
However, I personally would go for a new computer. (not trying to force it on you or anything )

I myself have an old laptop sitting next to me with the same specs as your computer and XP on it.*Sigh*I would LOVE to have a new computer! This is a desk top. I had more RAM installed a few years ago, and maybe assuming wrongly that when I right click on My Computer and bring up details, it reflects that change in RAM? You can also find it if you go to RUN and type DXDIAG and press Enter. That was cool. Don't know how you guys remember all this stuff. I have 318RAM

Solve : black screen with cursor?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with a 200GB Hd, using Xp Pro. I powered up my system and I only get a BLACK screen with a cursor light in the top right hand corner blinking. If I have a HD failure is there nay method of recovering my data?Did you install/run/download anything before this happened?
Any recent hardware changes?

Can you make sure nothing important plugged into the computer (like USB Flash Drives...) and is the CD drive free?If you suspect HDD failure or problems it's BEST to stop using it immediately...
You may get only one chancce to save your data...
Find out whose drive is in that machine by logging on at the Dell site and entering your service tag #...this will tell you exactly what components you have in there.
Then travel to the drive manuf. site and DLoad their Free diagnostics. Use the file to create a bootable CD and boot to it to test the drive's fitness.

The best method of retrieving/saving your data is to hook up the drive as a slave in another working machine...preferably one with a burner so you can backup everything.

Good Luck and let us know. When I leave one of my self-made dvds in my CD Drive, my computer does exactly what he says his is doing and just stays on that black screen for a minute or so...The HD is running .....I can feel it.........sometime I get an error message that says Primary disk 0 not found. I turn it off then I get the dreaded black screen of deathQuote from: slingblade on June 22, 2008, 09:05:30 AM

The HD is running .....I can feel it.........

That does not mean it is OK. Sounds like the hard drive could be faulty. But how do I get data recoveryIf you have access to another computer, I would suggest following Patio's advice here:

QUOTE from: patio on June 22, 2008, 08:44:32 AM
The best method of retrieving/saving your data is to hook up the drive as a slave in another working machine...preferably one with a burner so you can backup everything.
I hooked it up today at work. The drive has two partitions, "F" and "G". Using tools in windows they both appear heathy. The drive stated that it was full. I question this, it is a 200GB and I surely don;t have that much stuff, ANYWAY I opened the drive letter "G" and deleted all that I didn't need, then backed up the other stuff. The drive letter "F" will not let me do anything. The hours glass just keeps on turning, then the "F" drive that was hightlighted dropped down to the "G" drive again. The drive will not allow me to open the "F" drive. Any suggestions?Go to Start/Run and type in chkdsk /r and hit Enter...
Select the drive/partition that's not behaving...
Let it run til it finishes....
You may get lucky here,

Solve : Lagspikes for about 5secs every 5th min?

Answer»

Hi
Problem: My computer lags for a seconds every now and then. It doesn't happen in a fixed interval, but about every 5th min is a good guess.
When I talk on skype, the other person can't hear me, and I can't hear him for a few seconds. Whatever program I have running will freeze for the duration of the lagspike.
When I play a game online, the game will stop and it will wait for me to reconnect. I can't move the mouse really. A few seconds later I'm back in and its running smooth.

History:
I formatted my computer a few weeks ago, and that's when it started.
Iwas running XP, and I started getting blue screens now and again, usually after using it for hours.
One day the blue screen appeared everytime i started the computer, even when i tried STARTING in safe mode. The error code was
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
0x00000050 (0xE1A48000, 0x00000000, 0x8053BB25, 0x00000001)

I booted with windows cd ran chkdsk /r on my primary partition (the one with windows installed) and it said something about volume error.
I formatted it, and reinstalled Windows XP pro SP3. That's when the lag issue began.

Hardware(copying from bill, so I hope its good enough)
MB Asus P5KC AiLifestyle SeriesSocket 775/Intel
CPU Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz FSB1066 2x4MB
RAM 2048 MB DDR2 PC2-6400 CORSAIR XMS 800 mhz (2x1 GB)
VGA PCI-E 320 MB Geforce 8800 GTS Asus EN8800GTS
POWER Corsair HX620W PSU /Inter
HDD: Seagate ES 320GB, 16MB, SATA300 7200RPM

Custom built

I CURRENTLY have no anti virus, anti spyware or firewall. (not even windows is firewall is enabled)
It began after I formatted so I dont suppose that has anything to do with it.

If I missed some kind of info, sorry, please let me know what you need.
Thanks in advance!Oh, fwiw:
When I had the bluescreen problem, i searched online and found somewhere saying it most likely was a memory issue. So i tried starting the computer with a single block of RAM, first one block then the other - to test if one of those was causing the trouble. It didnt change anything.bump3 things you can check:
First visit Seagates site and DLoad and create a bootable Seatools CD...use it to check the health of that drive.
Second DLoad and do the same with MemTest...use it to test the memory modules...let it run a few hours. Any errors and you have a BAD stick of RAM. If you do get errors power down and test them one at a time to find the bad one.
Third DLoad and install Process Explorer...FREE. Use it to watch for the spikes and see what app or process may be causing the lagspikes as you aptly named them.

Good Luck and let us know.I did the first 2 things, and both passed.
In the meantime the lagspikes have disappeared, so I guess it was a software issue.
I don't know what fixed it, but I think it might have been windows update.

Thanks for the help! Forums like is another good reason to love the internet.

Solve : Hyperthreading?

Answer»

Hi, im sure this has been discussed before...i just cant find it on the forums. But, can someone give me detailed instructions on how to turn on or off my hyperthreading? Please just dont say to GO to your bios...i dont know what that is. Sorry, and thanksWhen you first turn on the MACHINE, before the Windows logo you should see a key combination to get to setup. That is where you must go.

What computer make/model or motherboard do you have?my computer is a pentium IV, 2.8 ghz processor. It has about 512 mb of RAM and about 115gb of harddrive space. Its VAIO, and for my computer...it doesnt do anything before the windows logo pops up,(i have XP btw) all it shows is a SONY logo, a PENTIUM IV logo, and blacks out a couple times, then the Windows loading logo. soooo yea...hope you can helpWhy do you want to turn off hyper THREADING?

Why do you think it is the cause of your problems?

Remember: If hyper threading froze PCs, it wouldn't have been sold in stores.

Look for the problem elsewhere, young one!
i dont want to turn OFF my hyperthreading, i dont think its ON! so that is why i want to make sure and try to access my bios.Look in the manual for bios access. F1 or delete key when you see the Sony logo perhaps? With a Sony Vaio you should USE the F3 key to enter the BIOS BIOS KEY CODES

If there is the option to turn HyperThreading on and off you are in luck. Sometimes it is necessary to re-install XP if you take a look at Google.

Dual Processing is a better option, if you want an engineering opinion.

Solve : communication (millenium edition)?

Answer»

I was told that my communication in windows ME has to be reinstalled. The PROBLEM is there was no operating system with this computer. Is there a download I can access online. The problem is I can get online but cannot access the internet. Any suggestions/answers would be most welcomed.

Amiga :-/What process told you this.....my ISP - I was told that communication was corrupted. I can get online but cannot access any web pages. What did you isp recommend......Reinstalling the communication folder(?). However, this computer did not come with the os on cd.Are we playing games........load the isp disk.....What you need to do is configure the TCP/IP settings according to your providers wishes.

There are additional Windows services/applications that can be installed/uninstalled and those are indeed situated on the OS CD.

However, if these have become damaged you MAY wish to do an extensive virus/spyware scan and remove any legit software that could have altered these files.

It probably needs the DUN (DIAL Up Networking) reinstalling.

If you go into Add-Remove PROGRAMS and Windows Components, find Dial Up Networking and uncheck the box. Click Apply and OK until the panel is closed, close the Control Panel and all other windows and re-boot.

Go through the same procedure and put the check mark back in, click Apply and OK, etc. and re-boot again.

This should re-build the connections, which may have been damaged by adware, and you should be able to PROCEED from there.I have no issue with getting online. When I try to access a web page, such as msn, the can't display this page message shows. I tried what MAC suggested, unclicked DUN, etc. However, this didn't work. I did notice that on Communication, I read 0.4. When I click on DUN, 0.0.

Merlin 2: no, I'm not playing games. I have no cd for my Internet Service Provider nor Windows Microsoft Millenium Edition. My ISP said I could copy from this cd but I don't have one.

Give us some more detail of what you are trying to do.answering a question with a question isnt an answer but it is frustrating especially after the question was asked days ago without reply. theres not much to 'know' the question covered everything so this is aggravating. its a PRETTY simple question looking for answer 'yes there is ABC or xyz'. if you know of a program can you please just tell me?Quote

the question was asked days ago without reply

Ever wonder why?
Quote
answering a question with a question

You must first question yourself grasshopper. The answer is no. There you go. a bunch of 'experts' with nothing to say but bs...nice, real nice. about as sharp as a sack of wet mice...keep up the good work. appreciate it.You give a two sentence question that is somewhat vague, are asked for clarification and get defensive. The question was "Give us some more detail of what you are trying to do."

You get few replies because this is a topic obviously of little concern to others. You even got an answer of "no" but I guess this was incorrect as well?

This is a volunteer forum. We are not your employees, your dog, or paid support. You are welcome to wait for another response or you can go, but rudeness will seldom get what you want. Your mom should have taught you that. Goodbye.

I guess experts wasting TIME on a marry go round and replying with bs and 'no' answers is ok with you but not with me. for 3yr olds maybe those are good answers but if thats the best 'experts' can do then all that time spent on computers didnt really pay off did it. the question was very simple to answer so I'd hate to ask a complicated question here if that one was considered confusing. if any topic is of little concern to others here than there's a problem with the mentality of some of the people on it because mature people know how to be helpful and answer questions regardless of their so called 'interest' in them. its around halloween so watch me do a trick, and disappear...to a place where questions actually get answered because here tongues are flapping but nothings coming out of any big mouths. You are so sold on yourself that obviously you do not need any help or answers, especially if you don't like them. What about the "no" answer. Can you not live with that? You couldn't find it and neither could I. Oh, that's right, you wanted: "it's a pretty simple question looking for answer 'yes there is abc or xyz"

Your first question generated no interest, and the second time you asked, it obviously was still not of interest to many and that offended you further. At least one such program exists (you found it) but it is not free. I guess you are just cheap then. Just because you want something to exist doesn't mean it does. Just because you think you should get something for nothing, doesn't mean it is so. Just because your quest (or you) are important to you, doesn't make the rest of the world revolve around you. These are the notions of a self-important person who sees no importance in others. Go ahead and Google yourself to death. I wish you luck.

It may be that we are not computer superstars on every topic that comes up, as you wish, but we don't answer to you. As I said, We are not your employees, your dogs, or technical support you are paying for. This is a volunteer forum and you are wound too tight. The worst you could say is you got what you paid for. What did you pay for admission? Nothing.

But we can change who we are, and we can grow and learn and evolve into better people and computer mentors . An a**hole cannot change. You will ALWAYS be just as you are. Have a nice wipe. Bye!

Solve : How to capture/print screen??

Answer»

can SOMEONE tell me how to capture/print screen and put it on the www, like in a post?PRESS the Print Screen key (usually located above the num pad) and tehn go to paint, and click on edit -> Paste. Save the file (should use jpg format). Next, find a host. http://www.photobucket.com perhaps. Upload the file, and get the URl to it. Come to this board, and when starting a new topic or REPLYING, click on the little icon that shows an image. Inside the tags, insert that URL. it should now display properly

[glb]Flame[/glb]OK, I think I got that, except there is no option that I see to save as a jpg, only as a bitmap. How can I add that to the save as file TYPE options?
In Paint, click File, then Save As...
Then from the Save as type drop-down menu, select JPEG.

the only options that show in MINE are all bitmap formats. NO gif, jpg or whatever, ONLY bitmaps.
How do you get the other formats to show in the drop down save as type choices? What version of Windows are you using?windows meSave it as .bmp and then convert it using IrfanviewYou can use Irfanview, or PaintShopPro 7

To capture the entire screen press Print Screen.

If you just want to show a panel hold down the Alt key and then press Print Screen.

Solve : xp boot disk refuses to work?

Answer»

I was upgrading an old computer my family had lying around. It is an old intel pentium three. I upgraded the ram, hard drive, installed a controller card, an ethernet connection, and soon i plan to hook it to the INTERNET using a router. Everything I have is compatible, so that isn't a problem. The problem was I erased the hard drive, and got rid of the windows 98 operating system, and now it won't allow me to install XP. I was told that with a blank hard drive, i shouldn't have any problem. I know for a fact that the boot disc is functional. Just to make sure everything was still able to work, i reinstalled 98, and it worked better than ever. unfortunately, I still need to install XP, so i deleted the 98 again. Now, when i put in the XP boot disk, it does one of two things. If i leave the BIOS on default, then it sends me a message that there is an INVALID boot diskette in A drive. I have removed floppy as a boot option from the BIOS settings, and it still usually retains the same message. It only changes on one setting. I can't remember which it is, but what happens when i use that as the only boot BIOS can use is that it goes to what looks a LITTLE like a DOS screen, with only the one blinking underscore, but nothing listed and you cant type. i tried putting in the 98 boot cd and the XP boot cd, and i started it into dos mode. when i do this, i can use the DIR dos command, and it lists the directory on the XP disc just fine. i attempted using a CD WIN XP command, and it tells me that theres too many parameters. I talked to the guys who built the computer, and they told me that 98 is NOT wired into the HARDWARE. Can someone tell me how i can get the XP disk to install? it still only identifies the 98. thanks for your time.It seems that it is a new enough machine that it should be able to boot from the CDOM with the BIOS settings. Any reason you are not doing it that way, rather than a boot floppy? Is it any particular make/model, or what type of motherboard if known?Quote

I was told that with a blank hard drive, I shouldn't have any problem. I know for a fact that the boot disc is functional. Just to make sure everything is still working, I reinstalled 98, and it worked better than ever.

Just how old is the computer? When you had '98 on it did you try the XP Compatability test at PC Pitstop?

Some detailed hardware specifications would help PIII (what speed?) RAM (how much?) drive (what size and speed?) BIOS (what age?)

I don't alter any BIOS settings if there is a floppy drive present I just use a redirector bootdisk (click link below) and download them all for future use. (You'll need a floppy 10-pack.)

This will boot you directly to the XP SP2 CD (if you don't have SP2 on the XP CD you should slipstream it first before using it for the install).

Don't use fdisk to prepare the drive. You could use fdisk to delete all of the partitions made for '98 and then ONLY use the XP SP2 CD and diskpart to make a single C: drive partition. (XP needs about 8192 MB = 8 GB)

You can partition and format the rest of the drive using XP's Disk Management.

How did you make the XP bootdisk? If you COPY the file to the bootdisk it won't work at all.

If you double-click on a bootdisk image file whilst it is on your hard drive (.exe) it will MAKE a bootdiskette, formatting the floppy before it does so.

ALSO if you want to use NTFS it is better to use the XP CD in every respect as otherwise you'll need to use fdisk to partition and format to FAT32. Then you'll have to convert from FAT32 to NTFS, so you can see why I don't bother with DOS anymore except as a LAST resort!

HPFS = High Performance File System

NTFS = New Technology File System

Solve : Virtual Mem/Page File Sizes???

Answer»

I got into the the window where you can change your virtual memory settings. I have Windows XP Home Edition. The PAGING file size was set on Custom. I hit some button and the numbers that were in the Initial Size(MB): and Maximun Size(MB): disappeared.
I had no idea what values to PUT back in there so I have chosen System Managed Size for now. I have 512MB of physical memory, what should I set my Initial and Max paging file sizes to?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I WOULD leave them as system managed unless you have a definite REASON not to do so.

If your hard-drive is partitioned, or if you have two hard drives, there are a number of other considerations.Best to leave Windows manage them but if you're stubborn i would suggest 768 as a good bet for both settings...

You cannot format a drive which is in use, but you can boot to the Recovery Console on the Windows XP CD and format it from there.

Type - format /? - for a list of parameters.

E.G. - format c: /fs:ntfs
Formatting the boot partition is like trying to pull away a sheet of paper you are standing on.

You must either be using a boot floppy or the Windows CD to format the c drive.Quote
Formatting the boot partition is like trying to pull away a sheet of paper you are standing on.

Seem to remember that you can install a Boot Manager on the first part of the drive followed by a Primary, which would be the C: drive and a second Primary which would be the D: drive.

The computer will boot from the Boot partition and the D: drive and ALLOW you to format the C: drive from the D: drive.

Solve : Starting Over?

Answer»

I recently bought a computer from a friend of mine. Its about 1 year old. She didnt take very good care of it, when I got it I run muliple anti-virus and anti-spyware application, and found MANY lurking on the PC. Also there are alot of missing files for already installed software, and I have to deal with freaqent freezing. There is also a large chunk of hard drive (25 gigs) of wich I can not find anything taking up that space, like its lost or something.

So I decided to re-install windows. But this only helped slightly. So how do I do a fresh install of windows? I dont need anything thats currently on the comp. I would like to remove everything and install windows on a fresh HD. How can I do this? Another thing. The computer does not have a Windows XP CD, it came with windows XP on a seperate partision on the HD, thats the way it came out of the box.

Compaq Presario

1.8 Sempron
512 ram
75 gig HD (5 gig partition holding windows instalation)
Windows XPSee if you can benefit from using the latest HP-COMPAQ HELP AND SUPPORT CENTRE

Do you have a Compaq recovery CD which should come with the computer?

If you open Disk Management can you see any unallocated drive space?

If you unhide hidden files and folders can you see an I386 folder?

If so, burn the entire folder to a good quality CDR just in case the recovery goes wrong.

Click on the link below and head for the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, find out the XP Product Key on the drive and write it down carefully, double-checking that you didn't make any mistake.

Then, using a CD marker write it down ON the CDR.Ok, I made a back up CD. Now how do I make a fresh install of windows? I dont want to just re-install it. I would imagine I dont have to manualy delete each file . Is there an easy way or just a hard way Hello Cindy, If you don't have the CDs there is no easy way...

Better read this so you KNOW what you are in to...

Quote

There are two types of Compaq restore CD's.

The first type is the Compaq Recovery CD. This is the CD that comes out of the box.

As far as I can tell, every Compaq computer, both DESKTOPS and laptops have one.

I checked out that both laptops and desktops have their hard drives partitioned in two, a C: drive and a D: partition.

The Compaq Recovery CD does not contain the actual files used in restoring the computer. Those files are contained in the D: partition.

This CD only contains BOOT files. When you boot your computer from this CD the program will look in the D: partition for the restore files and use those.

The second type of CD is what Compaq calls a QuickRestore CD.

This is a two CD set containing everything needed to restore the computer to its original factory state.

You can boot from these CDs, format your hard drive and re-install the system.

The only way that you can get these CDs is by calling Compaq technical support. If they want to charge you for these CDs just say, "When my system failed all the data was wiped out. Including the data in the D: partition, so there is no possibility left for me to restore the system using the Compaq Recovery CD.

If your computer is STILL under warranty, they will be obligated to send you those CD's for free.

You should get these CDs as soon as you get your computer, because sooner or later you will have a need for them.

Once your warranty expires Compaq will charge you.

Some technical support people are unaware that there are two types of CDs.

One I spoke to kept on telling me to boot to the Restore CD.

I replied that only the boot files are on the CD and it took some time to explain how the boot process works.

I was finally informed that the CDs would be sent to me.

These CDs should have come out of the box in the first place so as not to waste hard drive space.

Everyone should obtain these CDs before the warranty expires.

The manual does mention QuickRestore, but it doesn't distinguish between the Compaq Recovery CDs and the QuickRestore CD.

So do either you, or your friend, still have any of these CDs?

This would make your life, and mine, a LOT easier.

Solve : Can't Reformat without getting into my BIOS?

Answer»

My computer has been several performance issues and I decided it was best just to reformat the thing and start from scratch. I've done it before with no hassle.

However, for some reason I cannot enter my BIOS in order to change my boot order to CD first, which is required. I have never had a problem with my BIOS but for some reason whenever I hit the key for entering it (DEL) I get a black screen instead of the typical blue BIOS screen. I find this very odd since just a WEEK or so ago I entered the BIOS with no problem at all. I tried to remedy this by flashing my bios multiple times with the most up to date BIOS for my Mainboard. This however did not fix my BIOS problems.

Is there any WAY for me to change the boot order without entering BIOS or reformating without changing the boot order? Any ideas on whats WRONG with my BIOS?

Any help would be much appreciated!!!Quote

You COULD very well have destroyed the BIOS chip's functionality.

Try the following:

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take measures against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery (Most systems have either)

In case of CMOS jump switch being present :

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery present :

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when the CMOS JUMPER is set to clear_cmos or when the CMOS battery is not present. Quote

Solve : Problem with monitor settings?

Answer»

Hi,

I have Windows ME. A few days ago I downloaded Power Point viewer. The next day the desktop was grey and white with huge icons. I uninstalled Power Point. I thought the computer was running in safe mode but it isn't. I can't change settings because the box is so big I can't get to "okay" or "APPLY" at the bottom even when I bring the box up as high as possible.

I have internet access but when I downloaded an updated driver I couldn't use AOL. System restore will not take me to any date earlier than Oct 29.

Help!
Try this. Right-click the Title bar and choose Move. Use the up arrow to move the box upward so that you can see the Apply and OK buttons.

Instead of using the PP viewer install Open Office for free.

Click the link below...

Thank you for the advice.

When I click move it will let me move it up just a little bit. It stops me right when it gets to the bottom of the blue space at the top of the box.

I've even moved the task bar down to get more space but I can't see anything below "advanced". Are you using the Arrows on the keyboard under the DEL key?

Can you see if it is more readily accessible in safe mode?

SOMEWHERE on the web is a small program called ChangeRes.zip

I'll see if I can find it.Thank you!

I will try your suggestions as soon as I get home from work. I appreciate your help.I TRIED it in safe mode and it is no more accessible.

I've tried the up/down arrows but it just shows an outline made up of broken lines showing how the box should be moving.Try making the necessary CHANGES and press the "a" key. That should select the apply button without needing to click the mouse.it worked! Thank you so MUCH. I was at my wit's end. It is so nice when one can apply the KISS principle.

Solve : Remve file encryption?

Answer»

Hi! I am from Puerto Rico and in advance, sorry about my English!

I have a difficult one for you...
I am using Windows XP SP2 on a PC with an 2.8GHz PIV and 1.5GB RAM.

I was forced to reformat my HD because of a Registry error that caused a BSoD preventing me to ENTER to Windows XP again, (trust me I tried to login SEVERAL times, even in Safe Mode) but I was not able to do a backup of the encryption key of my protected files. Now I NEED to acces the encrypted files of my backup in my nice 80GB USB 2.0 HD and I am not able to do anything with them.

How do I REMOVE the damned encryption to my files?

The stupid thing is that I CREATED the files and now I can not access them. I went to support using Microsoft site, but their support is really bad... (to say a nice word) and expensive for me.

Please, tell me that there is still hope for me to recover access to my files or else I must create every single file again. I will not be able to redo all of them by Thursday.

And there are a lot o files in a 3.5GB folder... over 1000 files!!! I need to recover access to my files before the next Thursday or I will be damned.Sorry but if you don't have the encrtyption key then those files will not be retrievable.

I don'tknow of nay other way, unless you can get some super hacking application.

Solve : repeated files after system restore?

Answer»

does anybody know how to get rid of double entries after a system RESTORE? when clicking on teh start button, you can manually delete all of the programs that are shown twice, but what about the control PANEL?

and does having double entries have any IMPACT on files if left alone? when i uninstall a PROGRAM, the left over ENTRY remains, and if i try to uninstall, the computer asks to browser for location.

thanks! If you have two identical ones, one should say Copy of Shortcut, or something like that. Make sure the other (original) works, then delete the offender (copy) - either drag to recycle bin or right click and choose delete.

Solve : How can my 1st partition now be h: ??

Answer»

Hi there,
I think I'm just going to have to REFORMAT and reinstall everything.
However I am still MYSTIFIED as to how everything got so messed up.
I'm sure it's Norton Ghost..and I know many of you wise folk don't like it...but could you PLEASE explain whether it is something to do with the 'keep disc signature' and keep MBR' options in ghost that are causing me problems with boot.ini and mbr?
If I set up two partitions using XP pro and then just drop my ghost images in WITHOUT checking the signature or mbr BOXES, will all be well?
Thank you

Solve : Two Win XP problems?

Answer»

Problem nr. 1

I've been unsuccessfully trying to get Windows XP pro (sp2) to recognize and load the drivers for a WD external HD. But when I disconnect the HD I get alerts that new hardware is present. As when I had the HD attached, the system does not recognize the drivers on the CD.

So now everytime I boot up I get New Hardware alerts, even when nothing is attached. There seem to be two, one id's the hardware as WPD (whatever that is).

Problem nr. 2

This one is more serious. I've lost the ability to access Windows Help & Support option on the Start key. When I HIT it, nothing happens. Also, hitting Search only brings up a window with the dog, but no options for actually doing a search. It has also affected drop-down windows on my Netscape 8 browser and I cannot utilize MS MSN screen icons.

I've run two anti-spyware programs as well as anti-virus to no effect.

I have an Athlon 64 3500+ CPU with Win XP pro (sp 2); AV8 mb; 2 x 250GB MAXTOR drives; 2x Kingston dual channel 512K memory; nVidia 6800 graphics card; Sony CD/DVD write drive.

Thanks for your help in advance.Quote

  • Remove all entries related to your external HDD.
  • Restart the computer
  • Install relevant and up to date drivers. The drivers most likely come as executables. Meaning that Windows can not detect them and that you will have to open them like any other program.
  • connect external HDD. (I assume it is USB?)

And what is the other one ..... ?

How old is this drive, or is it a recent purchase?

If you can give more info on model and means of connection it could help.

Western Digital External Drives, Support and Knowledge BaseProblem nr. 1:
Well, I followed Raptor's advice and indeed the external drive was detected. Thank you.

However the system STILL asks for drivers for new hardware when I boot up! I now have 2 icons on the taskbar - a WD Button Manager and one for Safely Remove Hardware.

I will go to WD for further help, but if ANYONE knows anything about this, I would be appreciative.

Problem nr. 2:

I went to Kelly's Corner #235 as advised, and was thoroughly confused. I would be able to Ghost my C: drive to my identical D: drive and then fool around with the registry on the C drive through these programs, but which one??

As for not using Netscape, that's a non-starter. Netscape 8 blows away IE. Besides the problems are not just with Netscape, but with XP and MSN functions as well.

One thing is very curious, however. Before having this problem, I'd get occasional shutdowns from Netscape 8 at various moments. But after having this problem, I don't get any shutdowns.

Where do I begin with the maze in #235?Quote

I'd try scrolling down to #235 and click.
I'd then save the file.
Then I'm sure I'd double click the saved file. Quote

Those two numbers are just for registry (.reg) files.

Kudos to Raptor!

All you have to do there is to copy and paste the files into Notepad, exactly as they are, and save them with a .reg file extension. When you double-click on them you will be asked if you want to merge them with your registry, so just answer Yes, and that's it.

You need the both of them.

If you don't use it already ERUNT makes registry backups automatically. I prefer using a drive image myself as it is more certain, so I backup my C: and D: drives to data DVDs and also keep running copies on the F: drive.

If you need help I could always email the .reg files to you.

If you take any one of your current .reg files, export it to a folder to work on and then right-click on it and choose Edit you'll see what they are like.

I use Opera 8 with Voice and that blows away IE as well!

Problem Fixed!

I tried running Norton Win Doctor and that fixed problem nr. 2.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help. Your efforts are very appreciated (Thanks Mac for the email)!

I had Norton WinDoctor when using ME, as PART of Norton Utilities.

Smart move.

I wonder how the problem was caused in the first place?

Solve : How do i get windows xp running again??

Answer»

I just installed a new motherboard, processor, video card, the whole 10 yards. I used the hard drive from my previous system which ran windows xp. after installing my motherboard and setting the bios, my system will not start up. it just keeps recycling to the same SCREEN. wut do i do?Have you re-installed Windows XP (Home/Pro?) since FITTING the drive?

Is the drive partitioned?Yes the drive is partitioned. i did not attempt a reinstall since installing the new motherboard. WOULD it be possible if i just reset my bios to BOOT from my drive?yes the drive is partitioned. is it possible to reinstall it by changing my bios setting to boot the cd drive first? You need to reinstall WIndows with that hardware setup. Occasionally you can get a system running with what you did, but if so there can be other problems down the road.

Do you have a legal Windows CD to do it the RIGHT way?Quote

yes the drive is partitioned. Is it possible to reinstall it by changing my bios setting to boot the cd drive first?

You could install to an empty partition so that you can recover the C: drive if you really need to. Otherwise with all that new hardware you should consider a clean-install.

Are the partitons formatted to NTFS or to FAT32?

If you have a FAT32 partition you could use a bootdisk and copy the I386 folder to it and then run winnt.exe

Solve : Windows Media Player 10 issues?

Answer»

I've never had a problem with windows media player before, but recently I haven't been able to view videos on websites. This happeneded even before I upgraded to media player 10, although it had been previously fine.

When I try to watch a video on a website, either one of TWO things happens; 1) It says "buffering" and "connecting," but never actually does anything, even if I click "play"; 2) all I see, INSTEAD of a video, is a blank white box with the controls (play, pause, STOP, etc.), only I can't click on any of them. This happens no matter what website it is.

Also, any files I have saved on my computer play fine, so I'm quite BAFFLED...

If anyone knows what I can do about it, I'd appreciate the help!Open windows media and go to Tools and Options. Look under Preformance and Network and make sure the right things are selected

Solve : Office shortcuts broken?

Answer»

All the shortcuts related to OFFICE 10 have ceased to work. They show only a generic icon, and when launched display some MESSAGE a la "This only works for programs currently INSTALLED".

These shortcuts seems to be of a special type, i.e. their target field is greyed out and can not be edited. Their target fields are blank in this case.

Is there a way to restore these shortcuts without reinstalling Office? Of course it is possible to set up new shortcuts manually, but for some of them I don't know which exe file they refer to.

I suppose these special kinds of shortcuts refer to some string in the registry which in turn refer to the actual exe file, and that these registry keys might be broken somehow. Are you able to reinstall the program, which will replace these with working shortcuts?Quote

Is there a way to restore these shortcuts without reinstalling Office?

Why you resist to do so?
I seems that you imply the possibility that I might be using a pirated/borrowed/whatever version of Office and thus not be able to re-install it. Since this was a computer belonging to a customer of mine I have actually no idea whether that was the case. I told the customer to re-install ANYWAY, since I was not able to solve the problem. However, in principle, re-installing is a time-consuming task, and it is therefore preferrable to repair the issues instead. When he has a good clean install on a partition, he should make a drive IMAGE so he can restore more easily the next time.Quote

I don't think this was implied at all.

Sometimes reinstalling Windows can be time consuming, but just sticking in an office CD takes what a minute of your time and 5 minutes of the computer's time?
Alright, my wrong assumption. Thanks for your answers.

In fact repairing is more time consuming then re-installation.Again, it is better to make a drive image, so you can fully restore the system in 30 minutes and then update.

This is the main reason why I - never - get these myriad problems.

Solve : Anyone got time...?

Answer»

... to try this?

BURNING the RECOVERY CONSOLE ISO to an 80mm MiniCD or standard CDR and see if it works when booting directly to it.

AND/OR...

Copying the files from the CD to a folder NAMED C:\cmdcons (Normally a hidden system file when the Recovery Console is installed in the normal fashion.)

Adding the line...

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

... to the boot.ini file to see if the Recovery Console does appear as an option on your boot screen?

(For those who don't have an XP CD and who don't have the Recovery Console as a boot option.)

Does this do the same thing?

How To Create a
BOOTABLE CD to access the Recovery Console - this 7Mb .iso will give you a bootable Recovery Console rather than using the 6 floppy set above. Unzip and burn the .ISO file to disc. You can boot the CD and run the Recovery ConsoleQuote

Hello CC,

It might do. The unzipped file is smaller than the 7.7 MB file on the other link and recent Recovery Consoles may have more tools in them than older ones.

Do you already know if it works?

Solve : can't get into safe mode?

Answer»

Hi, I installed an older version of WinFast 3D graphics this weekend (found it when throwing away some old boxes - including graphics card box). Result is that PC will no longer boot up any further than a plain blue screen after the black Windows XP screen - so no way in. I figured that I could boot up in safe mode and then remove WinFast, but i just can't seem to get into safe mode. I have tried contimously holding or tapping F8 at boot up but no good. Am I doing something wrong or do you think that I have done something bad enough to Windows to need to reinstall (probably beyond me..).
Thanks for any thoughts. How about holding the control key during boot? Can you get in with boot floppies, or use the Windows CD to do a repair? Can you boot off the CD?Thanks, I will try booting off the CD and experiment with holding the control key down. I will do it this evening when I get home and report back if all goes WELL tonight. Otherwise tomorrow from the office. After a bit of a struggle I realised that maybe it was just the communication with the graphics card that was the problem. I removed the card and reconnected to the basic card on the motherboard (AVI socket) and bang I was back in contact with the PC and the net. So now just trying to find a new DRIVER for the BETTER graphics card so I can reconnect to the DVI socket.
So FINALLY no problem with windows or safe mode. thanks for your help and sorry for misleading.

JumpJackNo will due. I seen that problem to MANY times.
The installation has had conflicts with registry causing it to go to the Blue Screen Of death Error.

Here is what you do. Copy the entire line that say a bunch of 1100x0000 every thing on there
then go to microsft website
Type it in the search then how to fix the probelm weill come up. But most likey it will say use your XP Disk to Fix the problem.

This is the major reason why you must backup your registry before installing anything. It happens to the best of us people. Just learn to use the tools XP provide ya with and you'll be fine.
