Solve : weird problem with picture icons and pictures?

Answer»

Hi, I'm going to TRY my best to describe this.....

XP

I have a folder with 95 pictures in it.

There are 95 names for the pictures, all correct.
There are 95 icons for the pictures, all correct.
There are 95 pictures, all correct.

My problem is that the icons have switched. For example, the icon for picture 12 is the icon for picture 1. So the icon and title don't match up. But if I double CLICK on the title for picture 1, picture 1 opens up. The icon for picture 1, however, is down the line somewhere.

I have tried refreshing the folder. I have ALSO gone to DETAILS and tried sorting the names and going back, but no dice.

I have never heard of this problem, and it seems kinda weird. A

Any thoughts?
Thanks

ChadAre these icons thumbnails of each PHOTO ? ?

If so in Explorer you can turn off Thumbnail view; re-boot and turn it on again...

Solve : ms-dos program under xp full screen does not scroll items - works fine in window?

Answer»

I am running a MS-Dos program under windows xp. I have WORKED with the compatibility options and it works fine in the non-full screen dos window. However, in full screen the inputed data does not SCROLL - it just replaces a single line. In full screen, if you leave and go to another area of the program (such as a help screen) and come back, the scrolled data is there. What can I adjust? I have tried running under MANY options (95 compat, colors, DIFFERENT screen sizes)There's no need to start a brand new Topic for the same question...you also have YET to let us know what program this might be as requested...

Solve : Critical Battery Blat on "Desktop Computer" Windows XP Pro SP2?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

This is a rather interesting problem that just started occurring. Not sure if this is a Windows Error as it seems to be confused as to if it is a Desktop or a LAPTOP, but occasionally I will get the error message of
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Critical Battery

[!] You should change your battery or switch to outlet power immediately to keep from losing your work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This computer is a ( Desktop/Tower) Pentium 4 HT 3.0 Ghz with 2GB PC3200 DDR Ram, running Windows XP Pro SP2. This problem has been happening now for last few weeks where I will go to logon to my work computer and got these messages sometimes stacked 2 or 3 deep of repeated alerts.

The power options power scheme for this system is set up as a Home/Office Desk and not set up as Portable/Laptop... SO I believe that maybe Windows is confused some how...

This system is powered through a 750VA APC UPS, but I dont have the UPS management cable attached to report back any ISSUES with parachute software, so I know it is not that!!!

Anyone seen this before? I'm Stumped

DaveHow is the UPS being listed in Control Panel/Power/Advanced ? ?In Control Panel/Power Options Properties/advanced there is no UPS setting that I can find. Below is all there is.

Options:
[ ] Always show Icon on the taskbar
[X] Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby

Power Buttons:

When I press the power button on my computer
[ shutdown ]I don't believe the computer needs the cable to be able to tell that the battery's running low, it uses that for configuring battery options (such as acceptable range of voltages, etc.)

I would get that message a lot when I would run my monitor off the battery as well, because it was a 22" CRT behemoth that laughed in the face of energy star compliance.

Try plugging the cable in and checking out the software and SEE what kind of load is on the battery. If you're maxing out the battery you'll see that message every now and again.Ok... so Windows has the ability to monitor line voltage in to the power supply of the desktop computer then???

Since there is no link to the UPS???

And your suggesting that the power to the desktop machine may be low or dirty(ripples) possibly?

Dave

In Control Panel/Power Options you don't have a UPS Tab ? ?Quote from: DaveLembke on FEBRUARY 13, 2008, 05:20:57 PM

Ok... so Windows has the ability to monitor line voltage in to the power supply of the desktop computer then???

Dave

To Windows, I don't think it differentiates between laptop power and desktop power, it just sees voltage. (Plenty of bios will report the voltage across the lines, windows is probably doing something similar)

Try plugging the battery into the computer via the link cable, it'll be able to answer questions about that better than I could. I will say though, that with my 600watt PSU and 22" CRT plugged into the battery, the battery couldn't put out ENOUGH power to keep up with the demand for more than say 10 seconds. So every time I had a serious brownout, or if the power flickered a few times, I'd either get that warning or my computer would hibernate. Unplugging the monitor (thus reducing the load greatly) fixed the problem.

And like Patio asked, do you see anything about your UPS in the control panel?

Solve : Login screen suddenly starts asking for password?

Answer»

I have always had the login screen (XP Professional) with an user name and then I'd hit "Enter" as there was no password. The other day I turned it on and hit "Enter" and it said incorrect password.
I know I was tinkering in the Users control panel the other day, but I canceled out of the menus... so now I dumbfounded

I am locked out of my own computer...

Thanks in advance for any help. You must have changed the password to be non-blank. Either that or you are trying to login as a different user than you normally do.
Check the USERNAME and make sure it is correct.

If so, then try logging in as Administrator with no password and then go and change your user name password to something you can remember.restart the computer with the PROBLEMS, press F8 till it beeps
you will be presented with a list of options , safe mode ect.. select
any of the "safe mode" options , their might be one with "with networking" ect
at the logon box type administrator , by default this will have no password and is
a different administrator then in normal windows, log into that.. go to control panel,
then users.. find the account with the password and "remove password"okay, so the Administrator login worked, but it looks like I somehow deleted the user that I originally was logging in as, except all the files are still there, C:\DOCUMENTS and Setting\sandra.SAWYERS . Of course I have to go LOOKING for them...not just straight to My Documents where they were.

But is doesn't load those settings. This computer I got was used and it had very basic THINGS on it, and the user accout that I was using was the one that was already set up on it. I think the computer was networked with other computers. But I am not sure if tinkered with some network setting that threw everything off or what.

Is there any way to attach those setting to the Admin user profile?

Thanks again for your helpCreate a new user, name it anything you want.

Log out, log in as that user.

Log out again and log in as administrator.

go to Start, Run, Regedit

Press F3 and type ProfileImagePath then click find.

It will take you to a list of profiles, find the one that has a ProfileImagePath that has the name of the user you just created in it. Double click on that ProfileImatePath entry and change it to sandra.sawyers.
Now close regedit and reboot. Log in as your new users.
That should do it.

Solve : Bypassing Firewalls?

Answer»

Hi there,

I'm at university right now, but there seems to be a firewall on their network.

I can access any site, no PROBLEM, but when i try to access the internet through a game for example, it doesn't work.

E.G.
I try playing World of Warcraft on my computer at university, and it doesn't work. But I can surf the internet without any restrictions on anything at all.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Do i need some sort of bypass program to play WoW at uni? I heard of something called http tunnel before, but it looked REALLY complicated and I wasn't sure that was what i needed.

Thanks for any help in advance.

BruceMaybe the uni IT admins don't want you to misuse the network? Why don't you ASK them if it's allowed?

There's no point in asking the admins... because they aren't going to change anything. This firewall is present throughout all the universities in England.

I know of some people who can bypass this firewall easily USING various programmes, but some direct help from someone would be very useful as i'm not extremely computer literate.

ThanksThe trouble is, helping people GET around work or college restrictions is against the policy of this forum, I think you'll find.

Solve : Problems with Windows XP, help? Connections/Hardware?

Answer»

I recently had my computer serviced by Circuit City and when I got the computer back, everything looked fine, the internet connected and the speed was as fast as it should be SINCE I use cable.

The problem is, everything except for Internet Explorer is blocked from accessing the internet. I don't have any firewall or anti-virus SOFTWARE installed or running so I can't think of what could be blocking everything. When I launch internet explorer, it runs fine. But I logged into comcast to download mcafee and it says my windows is out-dated, which it isnt.

I also went to download and install Zonelabs Internet Security Suite. The download and installation went fine, but when going to launch the program I get the error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to TERMINATE the application." The only option is ok, the program never becomes visible for even a second, and after hitting ok it just stays closed. I get this error with several internet protection programs.

I obviously have an internet connection because I am able to browse online and access this forum, but when I installed AOL Instant Messenger the program never connects to the internet. I also went to install comcast toolbar with the spyware protection on it, and after asking for the zip code it begins to connect to the internet and says there is no connection, but there is. Microsoft updates also connect fine.

What could be giving me these two problems?

I have not installed ANY programs since the reformat, the cable connection is connect and I checked all the cords and connections to the computer.

Thanks a lot and I appreciate any help/tips.I suspect that it might be an OS problem. It is advisable to reformat your harddisk before reinstalling the OS.

Any programs you don't recognise listed in Add/Remove Programs or in Explorer/Program Files ? ?

Call Circuit City and see if they load any propietary protection apps normally...What was the initial problem, which caused the trip to CC?Wow, slow your roll on the reformat and reinstall stuff. That's not necessary.

Also, you say you aren't using any firewalls, but what about Windows firewall? If you just got your PC back from the shop their standard procedure might be to enable Windows Firewall. Go to Control Panel, Security Center, Windows Firewall and see whether it is On or Off.Everything was reformatted already, because the computer was slow, programs kept crashing, system restore wouldn't run properly, the d drive was ACTING up etc.

Everything is functioning except for the problems I named. So you have the system back now after it was reformatted, and you are having this internet issue. Can you please do what I asked and check to see if Windows Firewall is ON or OFF?

Solve : problem with reading discs in the c.d. drive.?

Answer»

hello,
i am after alittle help, i am not the greatest computer wiz, and im having trouble with my computer :S..

the problem is.. it is laptop. and the c.d. drive seems not to work , i mean it works in so that oyu can insert a c.d. but it dsnt read it , it iruns and then when the c.d. is in it shows in "my computer" as if there is a blank c.d. in the drive ready to be written to. instead of a c.d. with information, it reads all c.d.s as blank, whent hey are first inserted the popup comes asking what i would wish to do and it gove only options asif the c.d. is a new blank disc.. it gives no option to run the c.d.

also when i try to burn c.d.s the burning process begins and then it announces that ther eis an error and stops a short way through.

it seems to me ther eis some softwear missing that must be vital to ALLOWING the c.d. drive to run,
has anyone an idea how i could fix this, i guess it is as SIMPLE as downloading s specific file from microsofts website , but what i dont know.

any help would be very useful,

It may be broken. If it won't read a pressed disk (a music CD you bought in a store) (does anybody do that any more?) or a software installation disk and burns fail regularly then maybe it is busted. Maybe you could try CLEANING the lens with a cleaning disk.

A burner, I think!
I've seen people already, trying to burn CDs in CD ROMs, that's why I asked. Now you mention it, so have I. Many younger people will never have seen a read-only optical drive, I guess. I have an IDE 52x CD-ROM in the CUPBOARD that will never be used again, I'm sure, since CD writers cost about 15 euros if you can find them.

I have tried to download windows installer from the first link.
From the files in this download section I successfully downloaded the following
Windows installer-KB893803-v2-x86.exe this was 2.5MB.
The other two files Redist.txt, and Windows installer 3.1 EULA.doc, I dont know what to do with them.

I then tried the Java Runtime Environment(JRE)6 Update 4

The files to download were
Windows Offline installations
Windows Online Installationd
Windowsx64 Executables

Non of the three files would download due to the same error message
ordinal 280 could not be located in the dynamic link library nsl.dll

Note I'm still not sure if I have downloaded the windows installer correctly
not sure how to use the first link to do this

The other two files just leave alone, but you first need to install Windows installer-KB893803-v2-x86.exe

Just double click it and follow INSTRUCTIONS. LET us know if you get stuck.windows installer -KB893803-v2-x86.exe seems to download OK

then I tried to download Java one of the three files

Windows x64 executable (jre-6u4-windows-x64.exe)
It tried to download then I received the Windows installer message
( The windows installer service could not be accessed. This ca occur if you are running windows in safe mode. Or if windows installer is not correctly installed.

Hi patio
you were right I didnt see the space between sfc and /scannow, it went to
windows file protection and times out ok with no significant change.

I am still not sure if I have downloaded the windows installer is there any way I can check this.

The microsoft support page is not clear to me and I am not sure how to download the installer

I have also asked the question before in the above posting, as far as I know I followed the download procedure for the windows installer.

I have opened " Add or Remove Programs " and I am seeing " windows installer 3.1 (KB893803) " listed in currenly installed programs, so I am assuming "windows installer" is installed.

thanks for the help
When you DLoad a file where are they saved to ? ?
The Desktop is most common...
Find the Windows installer fix file you DLoaded and double clik it and it should install itself.

I am searching my desktop and I can not see any windows installer icon anywhere,
the only place I can see windows installer 3.1(KB893803) is in the add/ remove programs listed in the "currently installed programs."

Solve : HP Recovery system changed extra partition to local and wrote over files?

Answer»

I have a compaq presario laptop. I have the C: partition (local drive), and an F: partition that i have CREATED for my data files.

I had to use the BUILT in recovery system. I made sure to choose the non destructive option.

However, afterwards, my F: drive's name changed to "local drive" and all the files on F: drive were changed into the files from C: (including system DRIVES). none of my datafiles on the desktop or my documents were changed.
Does any one of you know what might have happened? and do u know if it can be fixed, and if yes how? Please i really need help, I lost some really important data
Thanks a lot.
FatimaIn some laptop recovery procedures there is an option to save the existing INSTALLATION...sounds like this was chosen.
Unfortunately since it used the F: partition it sounds like your Data was overwritten...
Sorry.
The only thing you can try is searching for some of the files by name if you know the names of a few...but their probably gone.

Solve : Compatability of Windows XP and Canon Multipass C5500?

Solve : Computer Problems?

Answer»

I need help. Our computer was working fine this morning and my wife turned off the monitor only to clean it. When we went to turn the monitor back on it would not come up. We ended up turning off the computer at the CPU without shutting down windows. When we went to turn it back on we got the following:

STOP:c0000218 {registry File Failure}
the registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or itsw log or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physicla memory dump complete.
Contact your system ADMIN. or TECH. support group for further assistance

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.Sounds like the registry is corrupted. According to the Microsoft article, "How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows from starting" --

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

-- a common cause is powering down (or a power failure) while the system is writing to the registry, which leaves it in an "undefined state". Sounds like what happened here. If you have a Windows install disk there is a procedure, OUTLINED in the article I linked to above, which you can try. However:

* It is not for the faint-hearted. Registry repairs are serious stuff, and the system could get even more trashed. Read the article thoroughly first and note the remarks about NTFS and FAT32 at the BOTTOM of the page. If you do not consider yourself ready to do this, there is no shame in calling a repair service!

* It is not for OEM Windows installations, that is, one created by the supplier of the PC, (Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Compaq etc)

* Or you could consider reinstalling Windows if you can tolerate possibly losing stored DATA.

But I'm not entirely sure nymph4, do you want to start using Messenger or just disable it?
If you want to start using Messenger I believe you will need to install Windows Live Messenger. I don't believe Windows messenger is still supported by Microsoft.
Either way it is safe to disable Windows Messenger. Read this Microsoft article for instruction on how to do that.Ooops....

Solve : right-click on desktop shows AdobeFlash Information?

Answer»
I have Microsoft XP Home Edition, SP2 and IE 6, SP2, a Dell Dimension 4700

I did a clean install of Windows yesterday. I installed Adobe FLASH PLAYER 9.
Ever since I installed it, when I right-click on the desk top I get – Settings, About Adobe Flash Player 9. The only WAY I can get to the Display to view my screensaver and other items when I usually right-click, is to go to the Control Panel.

I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it three times and it does the same thing.

This is a first-time event for me. Any one have any ideas how I can get my right-click information back? Hope this is not confusing. Thank you, Anna Ruth
Go to control panel, bring up the display settings, click on the Desktop tab, click on Customize Desktop, click on the Web tab, UNCHECK any checked boxes, click Apply, click OK. See if your normal right click menu has returned on the desktop.Thank you,Emperor. The only thing in the Web tab is My Current Home page and it is not checked. Just a few minutes ago, I happened to find out what had caused it. I had installed a beautiful sunset wall paper. I experimented and uninstalled it and now all is okay when I right click on the desktop.

That had never happened before when I had installed wall paper, so it is a bit strange. I will try another wall paper tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks so much for your reply.. Anna RuthThis means that particular WALLPAPER runs on Flash...Oh, okay, thank you. I did install another wall paper and all is fine. So what would that be running on? Some run on Flash and OTHERS run on?

Thank you,Patio. The ones that need Flash to run are normally changing scenes; background music etc.

where did this wallpaper come from ? ?That wall paper came from an Windows XP wallpaper site. But in the meantime as I was roaming around the Web I saw a beautiful picture of a white-sand beach with azure water and I did a right-click and saved as background. So a beautiful beach is now my wallpaper and so far,so good. Is save as background the same as wallpaper?Yes.
You can also choose the photo of your choice maybe a family picture or a scenic shot you have taken and do the same thing...just right clik the image and follow the same steps...
Probably better than an anonymous web image you found at a website. Some are known to carry malware/adware which you don't need on your systemThank you Patio, I appreciate your input. Sometime I might try installing an animated background and see what happens. That Adobe one was not animated, so I should have been able to right-click and get to Properties. It was a gorgeous sunset background. But will not try that certain one again.

Thanks again. You're more than Welcome...

Solve : Windows XP Pro running system not working properly....?

Answer»

about 10 minutes ago i logged on to my computer and i couldnt open anything..... i got the error "this program failed to initalize, press OK to abort" and eventually i rebooted and when i got back... everything WORKED except M-S word and M-S Frontpage, which are quite frankly the 2 programs i need the most... and i have a website due midnight tomarrow... and time is precious...

oh yes i tried to manually open frontpage by going into my C:/ drive but whenver i typed in the address in the bar... the program froze and when i ctrl-alt-del the folder explorer.exe (taskbar and desktop items) resets... and i see a program running in my system tray with a red/white M on it... that im 100% sure i didnt install... and im the only one that ever uses it... but i have virus and firewall protection, and it is always up to date...

Thx
SimiSystem Restore?i managed to type in the address of the exe... and open it that way but i even tried to REPLACE the shortcut... no dice...CLICK Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.well its past the deadline... quite frankly it was overdue a few days ago... but that doesnt matter i still have to fix my pc :/ next thing i know the battery will explode...

yey it worked... now the one question is HOW it worked... lolI'm glad, it worked
Apparently some REGISTRY entries got CORRUPTED (yes, yes, Windows can do it ti itself, just like that), and System Restore restored correct values from the date when they were working OK.

Solve : no word?

Answer»

I recently reinstalled windows xp and everything works fine except I have none of the NORMAL microsoft applications like word, powerpoint, excel etc only notepad and rich text FORMAT. any ideas.Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc is all part of the Microsoft Office package. This is not a something that comes pre-installed with XP. You buy and install the Office package separately.
The only possible exception is if you bought a computer where XP and the Office package was preinstalled by the manufacturer. In that case you should have received some KIND of system restore option that RETURNS the computer to the factory default CONFIGURATION.

Solve : monitor Displaying Colour gradient banding... Please Help?

Answer»

hiya. This has only started recently. My problem is 2 fold. Sometimes my laptop shows definate colour banding in gradients. This has NEVER been the CASE before. ALSO I often link my laptop upto my 27" HD tv via VGA cable. There was also never a case of gradient banding on the tv up until recently as far as i can recall.
As I type this the current situation is that the banding on my laptop screen is not evident as far as i can make out but there is definate banding when viewed on my tv.
Is the problem just STEMMING from my laptop or is my tv nackering up at the same time as my laptop?

what should I do?

Solve : Trying to Work out Formula?

Answer»

I have created a relational database for my local running club.
It has 2 tables, 1.information on athletes which includes name, athlete's club etc as well as an individual athlete number which is the primary key. and 2. A positioning sheet with the place as an autonumber, athlete number and time field. There is also a query which merges the information (including club) from the two tables to make up a results sheet.

In these competitions there is a team event this works by the first 4 people of any one club to come over the finish LINE. The positions of these athletes are then added and the team with the lowest score wins. The resulting information should be calculated for all teams in the race. There can be an A, B, C team etc for the clubs, meaning that the first four over the line for a club are team A, next 4 are team B etc. It also needs to cancel out any teams with less than 4 people. Meaning i f9 people run for the striders and place 1, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 15, 25 then Team A is 1, 5, 6, 7 and Team B 9, 10, 13, 15 the runner who came 25th is cancelled out.

My problem is how to create this list of team results in the Access database.Welcome to the forum. To be honest, we don't get many Access questions here, so I'm not sure you'll find a solution from this forum. Various MS Office questions are posted, but Access is seen less than Word, Outlook, Excel, and maybe even PowerPoint.

I have Office 2003 and use Access for some simple databases. I have used some queries in Access, but I'm reluctant to tackle your question because I believe I would consume a LOT to time trying to FIGURE it out. This would include time trying to understand the scenario in your question, which is not clear to me now.

I'll mention points in your info which I'm not clear on:
Quote

2. A positioning sheet with the place as an autonumber
How could "place" be an autonumber? "Place" means the actual placing of a runner in an event, right? So, that would have to be a DATA entry into the database by you, not an automatically generated field.

Quote

So, you have multiple clubs forming multiple teams for each club? Is that right? And, runners from other clubs paced 2, 3, 4, 8, ..., etc.? Is that right?

You might also want to post your question in http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/ or see what other Access resources are in http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=access+forum&btnG=Google+SearchOn the positioning sheet i have set it as an autonumber to save on time. Means the number and time of the first athlete is number one as they are entered first and second athlete will be entered second so the autonumber will show up as two etc.

You are correct the other positions are given to other clubs and there are about 10 to 15 clubs forming multiple teamsI could tell you how in Excel, if you're interested.I'd be interested to see the logic of it being worked out in excel

Hello to all computer Marven's. I have been searching the internet with little success.
Somehow in "my computer", user accounts have been duplicated. This has been causing problems. All my user accounts have "My Documents" in both C; and also have same "My Documents", further down the list. It has various entries including windows operating components". I know my computer is as CONFUSED as *censored*, but not worse than I.
I have been out of work for 2 months, (following surgery), & i don't have a dime to take it to no one. My kids a driving me crazy though, cause they have to go to library for school. hope it will be an easy fix. (Never is)

Thanks from the bottom of my heart, for your time, & help, Dan

What Windows version? Did it just happen? Any recent changes to the computer? Can you post a screen shot showing the problem? I'm having a hard time envisioning what you are talking about.
To take a screen shot hold down the Shift key and press the Print Screen key which can be found in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard.

Then open MS Paint and press Ctrl-V to paste it. Go up to File, SAVE As, name the file something descriptive and from the dropdown box below the name choose .PNG as the file type.

Then save it and attach it to a post here. Thanks for responding guys, forever indebted!
I have a Dell Computer, Windows XP, Celeron Prosessor. No recent changes I am aware of. As you can see with snapshot, at top "My Documents"--- at bottom "Dans Documents". same person. It has duplicated, for every user same way.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment DELETED by admin]I don't see duplication here...
A lack of orginisation maybe but not duplicates. Are you sure things have changed or could it be that you have only just noticed the full structure of Windows?

It is a bit weird how Windows arranges the documents. The folders at the bottom of that list are normally the ones which are on your Desktop. Did you accidentally copy everyone's User folder onto the desktop? Do you see those folders on your desktop anywhere? But how COMES there's a Desktop folder at the bottom then?

Wouldn't the items visible on his desktop be in there?Because there are Desktop folders inside each users folder. Look on your desktop and see what folders are on it.

Solve : How do I clean out my MS Java cache??

Answer»

I have Windows ME and use Pogo. They advocate cleaning out your java cache on a regular basis, but only seem to provide answers and support for Sun Java, which is not compatible with Windows ME.

I can find Java files on my hard drive, but am too ignorant to know which, if any, will lead me to the answer!

Please, can anyone tell me how to clean out my MS java cache?

Thank you very much!Do you use Microsoft Virtual Machine, instead of Java?
If so, you should uninstall it, and install Sun Java. I believe, VER. 1.5 supports Windows ME.If there is a Java APPLET on the tray you can just right clik it and it should have a clear cache option...
If not it can be found in Control Panel/Java/Settings/Temporary internet files. Thanks for the suggestions, but they are not workable for me.
As far as I know, I am running MS Java (am not familiar with virtual machine).
There is no Java applet, no tray, and no Java under Control Panel -- that would be too easy! Quote

Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache

This is the normal path for the java TEMP files....anything in this folder can be safely deleted...As I said, MS Java should be uninstalled for safety reasons.

Solve : Finally about to start the restoration, but xp wants floppys?

Answer»

After backing up everything, I'm about to start the re installation of my former Win XP Home over that pirate pro. I start with the disk which has WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE. After agreeing to the EULA, I get the message on the CMD screen:

"This program creates the Setup boot DISKS
for Microsoft Windows XP.
To create these disks, you need to provide 6 blank,
formatted, high-density disks.

Please specify the floppy drive to copy the images to:"

I've been trying to direct this to my cd reader/writer drive, but the *expletive deleted* stubborn thing wants to write only to my floppy drive (which was disconnected, due to malfunction. It was so long ago that I'm not even sure I remember how to reconnect it). Nothing more happens after I enter the letter of the cd drive. When I made the image of the drive (getting rid of the clone - ty for the advice ), I made a boot disk for the imaging software & made sure that the bios was set to "boot from CD drive. I'm not even sure this is relevant.

How can I get this stubborn, nitpicking software to copy the images to the cd drive instead of the floppy? Can't you cancel that process? If your computer boots from CD, you don't need those floppies.Quote from: Broni on February 15, 2008, 07:37:39 PM

Can't you cancel that process? If your computer boots from CD, you don't need those floppies.

Not finding a floppy port and refusing to acknowledge the cd drive as an alternative, the process cancels itself. But this leaves me back to square 1, unable to create the 6 restore disks, and unable to restore my computer to its base xp home. What kind of Windows XP CD is it? Legit? FULL version - nice holograms all over it? The sole purpose of the WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE file is to create a six volume set of floppy disks used to start the Windows XP Home Edition installation on systems that cannot boot from CD-ROM. It works as designed.

The following quote is from
Windows XP Home Edition Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install

Quote
The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the OPERATING system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup. You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk.

Windows XP Home Edition startup disks will not work for Windows XP Professional installations and vice-versa.

Windows XP Setup boot disks are available only by download from Microsoft. The Setup boot disks are available so that you can run Setup on computers that do not support a bootable CD-ROM.

If your computer does support booting from a CD-ROM, or if network-based installation is available, Microsoft recommends that you use those installations methods instead.

What kind of Windows XP CD is it? Legit? Full version - nice holograms all over it?

aha no way.

This is a Compaq Presario 5000 series. It was bought many years ago on Overstock.com, and did not come with a restore disk or disk copy of win xp home. Many years ago, I was having problems, went to the HP/Compac help site. I explained the PROBLEM, and eventually they gave me one-time only access to a site where I allegedly downloaded six disks. Before I got to use the disks, a bigger problem occurred. Starting the computer only LED to the same screen one sees when running "CMD". Now I could fix this, but them I panicked. My friends' now ex-husband fixed the computer so it worked, but I later found out he did this by overlaying his illegal windows xp pro.

So what I am trying to do is access the restore system-sav FAT partition, which holds the xp home. I need the restore disk to do this. I checked out the disks Compaq had me download. Only one had any content, and it was the WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE. I tried to contact HP/Compac, and they say that I must have the restore disk because this particular package included the restore disk (if it says so on paper, it must be true). On the other hand, I never throw anything out. I have disks from Windows 3.1, Windows '98. Seriously. I never throw anything out. I did not throw out.lose the restore disk. I don't know how old this Compaq is, but usually you can access Recovery Partition, by pressing F10 key, while computer starts (it should say that at the bottom of black screen), unless your computer is too old to have it, or your friend's ex-husband removed it.The startup disk set is available @MS website.
You will then have to use your burning program to create a bootable CD with them.
However as Broni stated if the recovery partition has been wiped you may be out of luck.Another option is to contact Compaq and see if they will provide you with a recovery set of disks.

Solve : HELP ME!!!!?

Okay so my computer is a Windows XP. I'm not sure what year it is but it's not very recent.

Everytime I start it, it will give me a black screen that says:

'We are sorry for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. Please choose an option below and something something something (i forget)'

Then it gives me Safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, and start widnows normally.

I try starting it normally and it just keeps loading and it never goes anywhere. It hasn't made it to the profile screen since four days ago.

When I try starting it in safe mode, it starts showing a long list of letters and then it freezes again.

I was told I may have a software issue but I don't know what to do about it.

So...help? Please? Do you have Windows XP CD?Write down that long list of letters and numbers and post it here as it may help with a solution...um...i don't THINK soBut you shouted "HELP ME!!!!" in all capitals with 4 (four) exclamation marks, (very bad manners by the way) and now you won't take the trouble to give the information that might help you?

I apologise. I thought you were saying "I don't think so!" to the person who asked you to give details of the letters and numbers you saw. My mistake. Sorry again.

I think that list of letters and numbers is the normal list of drivers & modules that you see when loading Windows in safe mode. In that case, the last one you see listed before it freezes may be of interest.
Even though some said you were yelling,,, well I had the same thing happen too. Unplug your computer and let it sit for a while. I waited over night replugged it in and it started right up the normal way. Hope this helps you. From the "Windows ADVANCED Options Menu" (aka Safe Mode Menu); if the following item is listed, select it.

Disable The Automatic Restart On System Failure

It should stop the automatic restart and probably show a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with an error message. COPY the message in its entirety, post it here, or search internet for solution. It's important to copy the exact text so we may search the internet using "substrings" of the message.

The above Advanced Option menu item should appear for a Windows XP SP2 installation. I'm not sure if it APPEARS on Windows XP orginal, or SP1 installation.

Solve : Help with repairing Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi. I was wondering if someone could help me or give me a clue about the error I receive.
When I try to repair my installation of Windows XP Professional, it goes up to the step called "Installing Windows". After that, it shows me the following error:

"Hardware Installation
The software you are installing for this hardware:
ASUS Virtual Video Capture Device Driver
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.
Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing.
Do you want to continue installing the software for this hardware?"

If I choose no, it restarts. If I choose yes, it asks me for the following:

"Insert Disk
Please insert the Compact Disk labeled 'NVIDIA Network Bus Installation Disk #1' into your CD-ROM drive (E:) and then click OK.
You can also click OK if you want files to be copied from an alternate location, such as a FLOPPY disk."

I don't have any disk labeled with what they say. No matter what I chose or what I insert, it ends up in restarting itself.

When I initially installed Windows, I never had this problem. Additionally, the FIRST time I tried to repair it, after I received the second message, I put in the CD with the video card driver. It froze for a while and it changed my resolution. So then I put in, again, the XP installation CD and it continued on. And then I restarted the computer when it asked me for the product key, as I didn't have it handy. Now 5 minutes later, it just doesn't want to do the same thing.

I realize my message is long, but any help or ideas why this might be happening is very much appreciated. Thank you. You will need to travel to the MBoard manuf. site and dload all the mboard drivers...
As far as a Product key i can't help you with that one...I already have them on original CDs. No matter whichever I put in, nothing... keeps restarting after couple of seconds and after FLASHING the screen couple of times.

And I wasn't asking for a product key that was just the reason for my restart. If there is an addon vid card you may want to try the install with it removed and then re-install it after everything is up and running. There is just one video card, but the monitor plugs into it. If I remove it, I can't plug in the monitor into anything.Well actually I just tried to remove the hard drive and install Windows on it in a totally different computer. I know that it might not be compatible, but I tried anyway.

Thing is, I get the same error as before although there is no video card in the computer because it is old. I receive the same errors as with the previous computer, although every part is totally different. You will probably need to format that drive in the other machine...hook it up as a slave.
Then return it to your machine as master and install Windows.
Something obviously was installed improperly on that drive if it did the same thing.

1 GB is around 50 BUCKS or so.. I'm on a really tight budget right now, I can ALWAYS upgrade it later if I want right?Yep...i'd go for 2 of the 512's for $44 bucks and it should be a happy machine...
Make sure it is the proper type...184 Pin covers an awful LOT of memory types....and you can play with your budget, by buying ONE 512MB now, and another one later.
If you buy one 512MB + 256MB (existing one) = 768MB, twice what you have now. You'll see the difference.so i already have the computer back, and i never even got a chance to tell him what i WANTED. anyway, he left the two sticks of 64 MB in there, and added two sticks of 128 MB so now i have 384 MB. it works for me, faster than before, and it was free

Solve : Reinstalled Win Me but.... (see original posting downgrading from XP)?

Answer»

Hello Peeps,

Managed to reinstall Me again and sort out all of the problems CONCERNING drivers having to be reinstalled, but cannot get Me OS to accept my D-Link PCI adapter. Have installed original driver that came with adapter ( I think it's the right driver CD, it came with adapter) but CHECKING in Device Manager shows an exclamation mark beside D-Link, can't resolve PROBLEM, have tried unistalling adapter and reinstalling driver with no success. Any ideas, do you think it could be a driver conflict?
PC did not come with an ethernet adapter installed, I only had it put in when I had XP put on machine.
Do you think Win Me could be INSTALLING the driver for the old dial-up adapter and could that be causing a driver conflict?Uninstall the driver.
Shutdown the machine.
Remove the ethernet card.
Boot up the machine.
Shut the machine back down.
Install the ethernet card.
Start the machine up.
It should detect it and ask for the drivers. Give it the driver disk and it should install and work.

Let me know how it goes.Looked at driver file details in device manager, it listed the following;
C:\windows\system\NDIS.VXD
C:\windows\system\VMM.32.VXD [ntkern.vxd]

Is this what I should be UNINSTALLING?

If so how do I go about it?

Do I uninstall them from the C:\ drive by right clicking the file and removing? No no. Go to Device Manager, right click on the Ethernet card and click remove. No no. Go to Device Manager, right click on the Ethernet card and click remove.

Have tried the above several times to no avail, even tried a different pci slot, I can only think that it's not the correct driver for the D-Link ethernet adapter.

Not able to get online with that pc to download another driver, may have to invest in a new adapter, don't have the driver for the one on this pc, so I can't try that one either.

Any more suggestions?I'd just buy a new card and go from there...it will ship with drivers.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solve : In XP, how to drag (copy) a folder without changing any creation dates??

As backup I want to copy a folder from my C disk to my D disk wittout chnging any creation dates.

When I drag a folder from disk C to Disk D (and select "copy"), that folder and all sub- folders get
their creation dates reset to the current date. The file dates are OK.

Is there a way to do this in XP?

A previous REPLY to my post on this subject suggested using "XCOPY /K". This sounds like getting
into DOS which I would like to avoid, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Thanks for your help,

BobI don't know if there is another method, but maybe this might help.
The command prompt is not so scary.

Just click Start>Run type "cmd" and press enter (no quotes).

Let's SAY we want to move the folder called "Pink Cat".
First we have to tell the computer where to move the files. So let's put them in C:\Documents and Settings.
Type
cd "C:\Documents and Settings"
This command should change what it shows you next. It should show you "C:\Documents and Settings". You MUST use the quotes in this case.

Next let's tell him what to move. Let's assume the folder you want to move is in D:\My Files
Type
xcopy "D:\My Files\Pink Cat" /e
Now it copied the files to the new location. Notice the SPACE before the letter e. You MUST also use the quotes in this case.

You can try to experiment with an empty folder you created just to see how it works to copy them. You are not risking to lose any data like this.

Please re-read his post...this ADVICE has nothing to do with retaining the file dates...

Solve : Need urgent help...please!?

Answer»

Ok so I opened up Internet Explorer History, and I noticed that when I click on a some of the dates a few days back, it doesn't really expand them correctly. Like, instead of listing the video titles of the videos I watched on youtube, it just displays "v=". Usually when you go to History on IE, and go to youtube, it lists the video titles for the videos you watched...but mine is different.

This isn't only for youtube, it is for FORUMS too, and instead of displaying the topic title, it just says "Index" for all of the pages.

Here are a few pictures of how things are right now, and how they are SUPPOSED to be:

-This is how it is right now:

-This is how it is SUPPOSED to be:

-This is how it is SUPPOSED to be:

-And here are the forums, see how they DON'T list the topic titles, and just say index...For example, instead of "index" for this topic I'm making, it would normally say "Need urgent help...please!"

-Also a quick thing- All of this is for my Internet History BEFORE July 3rd, everything after that seems to be in normal format lol, it's just the days before that which are mssed up.

-Also, when I use some of those "Internet History Manager" tools, they don't display anything before July 4th...programs off the internet such as "IE History Manager" or "Dutch Duck Utilities", they don't display anything before July 4th...why is that??

-I also don't want to do a re-install or anything, because I actually want to go back and visit a few pages still, so please don't suggest anything like that because I don't want to remove anything =/

Thanks a lot!Think that I would run CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ making sure that you have everything checked under Internet Explorer (except Auto complete History, but check it if you want) and at least Temp Files under System. Any other entries are ok on the Cleaner tab. Don't run the Registry scanner unless you understand the potential risks.
Also be aware that this will wipe out your cookies unless you use Options to exclude certain cookies.

Also run a complete virus and spyware scan.

The registry scanner is perfectly SAFE. I would run it a few times.Won't checking the stuff under CCleaner delete my Internet History? It sounds like it by the DESCRIPTION of the buttons and stuff on there, I need to keep my Internet History =/ Will it delete any of that?Quote from: Compguy123 on July 08, 2008, 05:43:07 PM

Yes to your question.

Sorry - missed that you don't want to delete. Disregard my suggestion for CCleaner.

I can't help. You can keep the history unticked.

@Carbon: I have seen posts on the CCleaner Forum where people claim that the CCleaner Registry tool has messed up their systems; I agree that the CCleaner approach is very conservative and I have not had any problems - I'm just reluctant to recommend the use of any registry tool.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 08, 2008, 05:53:23 PM

Nothing difficult is ever easy! Anyyyyyyy idea on how to fix this lol =/ Or other methods, like transferring files from IE to mozilla or something, what other programs also allow this? Like is it POSSIBLE to do transferring from IE ---> MSN, or other programs too?

This is mainly a big deal because when my Internet History Managers show this stuff, they don't show anything before July 4th =/ They used to show it though!Quote from: Compguy123 on July 08, 2008, 06:39:31 PM

If 'fix' means to 'recover' the data missing from the IE history, I'm afraid that I must retain my defeatist attitude, not because of lack of desire to help, but, because I just don't know.

However, I would refer you to this: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iehv.html, other forum members and to Mother Google.

Best of luck!

Solve : Help Needed Very SOON Deadline TOMORROW?

Answer»

Hi I have an older laptop with Win 95 and I was getting an error about an iso file during start up but because I was trying different things I had read on other sites and now I have a bigger problem because I can no longer start in safe mode. I have found a Win 95 cd and was going to just try and REPAIR but I CAN NOT LOOSE ANY DATA!!! Thats not even it I have a presentation due tomorrow and all my work is on this laptop.

INFO:

Compaq Armada 1505DM

Horrible bios with out normal function so I can not boot from the CD

64 MB mem

100-200 mhz

starts with only mem check afterwards Makes noise that suggest I can boot from the floppy (no floppy drive on my computer, although I could put one in if I have too

after that I see the win 95 screen then a few sec later says:

While initializing device IOS:
Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load.
Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt,
or the system is low on memory.

When safe mode was working one of the things I tried was renaming the suspected folder as I had read that somewhere else I now know that was a huge mistake.

PLEASE help......
Renaming the IOSubsys folder is suggested when the problem occurs in W/98, in which renaming (ren) iosub sys iosubold in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM would make Win98 replace it with a fresh copy during reinstallation. But under Windows 95 it has to do with an incorrect memory setting. MS fix is to edit the System.ini. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225497

Maybe someone else maybe could give you the commands to do so from DOS, and if needed, to also rename the IOSubsys folder back .

You could have tried holding down the F8 key when you booted and chose Command prompt and typed scanreg /restore to rollback the registry, which should have restored previous versions of system.ini & win.ini.

Note that your data is safe, as you can always do an "over the top" reinstall of Windows, which should keep your date safe. I always RECOMMEND a partitioning drive, in which your documents are in a different partition than your OS.

Being that you DONT have a bootable CD Drive and No Floppy and due to its age no USB or definately not a USB boot option. You will have to fix it from DOS if you can get in that far. Without safemode working, does it kick out to C:\> or error message?

If error message and no way to get to C:\> you might want to get an external Laptop HD IDE to USB converter case and access your data off of someone elses system. ( aka empty External Hard Drive Case for 2.5" IDE or PATA Drive.

You can get these 2.5" external enclosures from most larger computer stores, and removing your HD and installing it in the cases are generally an easy task as long as it isnt an el-cheapo case from China where clearances are wrong and assmbly does not come together properly due to run of tolerances and poor quality control.

Sorry I dont have better news for a suggestion to get you running. At this point I am looking for the way for you to be able to present on the deadline given the circumstances!

DaveI wonder how he made out? If the previous suggestions do not work he could try getting a copy of puppy Linux live Cd and fix his file perhaps, or at least save his data if he could install a floppy. Hey guys I was able to get an extension and worked with one of my friends to redo his project from a few years ago but now I need access to this laptop and I now have access to a floppy drive so I can use the floppy to boot a copy of Win 95 I have on CD and repair it right??

Let me know what to put on the floppy or if there is a better way please let me know.

Thank you

Solve : Recovery Console question?

Answer»

Hello

I have installed Recovery Console from my XP (Home) CD, so that when I START my computer it gives me the option of logging on to the Recovery Console or choosing Windows Home.

If I choose Recovery Console (as I need to repair Windows) I see this only:

1) C:/Windows

So, I enter the number 1. It tells me this is an invalid command line (!!) and suggests I press help.

When I do that it gives me a list of options, but which do I choose so that I can repair Windows?

Many thanks.

SteveWho told you you needed to use repair console to "repair" Windows? What is wrong with your Windows installation?
Thanks for your reply.

If I go to Run and type in msconfig32.exe I cannot see any of my system information.

I thought I might be able to RETRIEVE it by repairing the O/S. I cannot use System Restore as I am unsure that I have ever been able to see System Information.

Thanks.

Steve 1. What "system information" are you TRYING to access? It's not clear which information, screen, or program you're trying to access. You MAY be trying to repair a non-problem.

2. Instead of "msconfig32.exe", try "msconfig" without the quotes. "msconfig32.exe" gives me an error message.

3. A different set of information may be accessed from Start Menu via:

Start-> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information

4. You're a dangerous man "Steve", but I admire your spirit - "To go where no man has gone before".

LOL

You can also type dxdiag in RUN.Sorry, it's msinfo32.exe - it should show all the System Information.

dxdiag works, thanks 'dangerous' Carbon Dudeoxide

I think System Information should show something similar but in a different format (small menu to the left, and larger frame in the middle).

SteveWow, I didn't know msinfo32 existed....Thanks for that. Try typing it in and see what appears - and that's what doesn't appear in mine!

SteveSo you don't have it?

I'm not sure but you may want to have a look here:

Interesting - the referenced article indicates that the file is part of Office not the OS; doesn't sound like Recovery Console will do it.Quote from: drmsucks on July 08, 2008, 05:41:38 PM
the referenced article indicates that the file is part of Office not the OS

The application MSinfo32.exe was introduced with Office 97 but was included in Windows 2000, following which it became part of the OS.

I note that a missing MSinfo32.exe does happen with some malware infestations, so I suggest a thorough virus and spyware scan, and then if necessary the OP can replace the file from a Windows install disk using Replacer

http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/Hello Dias

Thanks for your message.

So I download and install 'Recovery' and then use my XP installation CD?

I have now removed the Recovery Console as I don't think it's the right tool for the job.

Cheers

Steve
