Solve : two coumpters?

Answer»

i was trying two connect two of my computers to the INTERNET at the same time
both have windows XP i have dsl modem and cnet 5 port switch ,
if i try to connect two of them only one of them works the second one says
ip conflict
is there any way i can get helpYou will most like need a router instead of a switch in order to get both online.
A router can share a single public (or WAN) IP between several computers, a switch can't.
But I will need to know more about your internet connection in order to be sure.
What type of internet connection is it? (A)DSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.
What networking equipment do you currently have set up? I'm guessing a modem and a switch.
Can you tell me the brand name and model number of the modem and switch?

You might want to CALL your ISP and ask them how many IPs are included in your current subscription.
We've been surely missing you, Deerpark Thank you very MUCH Broni, I'm glad to be back. Welcome HOME Deerpark !

Solve : Windows Update KB928366 Install Failed?

Answer»

I reformatted my hard disk this past weekend, and I'm running into a problem that I've never before seen. Windows Update (both the manual web site and the automatic update manager) attempts to install the Service Pack 1 for .Net Framework 1.1, but it fails. I receive the following notification:

Quote from: Windows Update

Some updates could not be installed.
The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366).

I have researched this for a couple DAYS, and I cannot figure out how to remedy this. I've tried uninstalling the .net framework, cleaning up the update folders with the Windows Install Cleanup utility, reinstalling the .net framework, then attempting the update again, but it still fails. I've tried several variations of this method, as prescribed by various websites (and even Microsoft itself), but it doesn't work.

The most irritating thing about it is that once the install fails, Windows Update immediately insists on trying again and again, ad nauseam. Any IDEAS on how to fix this? Do I even need the .net framework?Did other updates installed fine, and this is the only one troublemaker? Thanks for the reply. YES, all other updates and installs worked fine. This is the only update with which I have a problem. Curiously, I don't recall having a problem with this update before I reformatted the machine.I would skip that update and go on to version 2 or higher.

But if you want that update open up the admin tools and check the .NET wizard settings for .NET apps RUN on your local machine. It should be set to full trust.

Post back and let us know how this works out for you.
Quote

The .NET frameworks are not cumulative as the Service Packs are...they are individual.
You may have to uninstall .NET 1 and re-install it to get this to work.More info on failed installs....

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=867460

I no longer believe the .NET update is the problem. Windows Update is failing to install all updates as of this morning. I receive the same error message for all updates that I received for the .NET update.Get Dial-A-Fix: http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles.
Checkmark MSI, and WU/WUAU sections, and run it.I may have fixed the problem. It wasn't a .NET issue; it was a Windows Update issue. I re-registered the DLLs associated with Windows Update using a terminal window ("command" window, whatever), and then it let me install all the new updates. For any who may have the same problem in the FUTURE, try following this suggestion I found.

I'll post again after the next round of updates to let you know if this is indeed fixed.Thank you for posting back

Solve : lsass.exe and csrss.exe causing constant hard drive usage?

Answer»

Hello. I've got a very strange problem on my hands here. I recently upgraded my case and to go with my new case I got a SATA Sony DRU-190S DVD-writer to replace my IDE writer. After completing the transfer to my new case I noticed that my hard drive light was flickering every second. It was pretty noticable as the Antec 900 HD light is very bright.

Upon investigating further I noticed that lsass.exe and csrss.exe were constantly producing many I/O reads and writes to the hard drive. After googling lsass.exe and csrss.exe I discovered that these two processes have caused other Windows users to experience the same problem, but every CAUSE seems different e.g. A virus, CPU utilization issue, corrupt profile etc. and I couldn't find one that matched mine.

I managed to find a thread that mentioned a Microsoft service called Terminal Service, which I disabled, and that seemed to tame lsass.exe. The problem is csrss.exe remains and is reading the hard drive many times an hour causing the hard drive to flicker every second.

I found a thread that told me to use Disk Monitor and Process Monitor together to try and capture what EXACTLY is accessing the hard drive. Unfortunately I couldn't get Process Monitor to work it just came up with an ERROR 'unable to allocate memory with a block size 4000', I tried googling that error but found nothing that could fix Process Monitor. I tried using filemon and process explorer, but its not really giving me the information that I need and I don't really know how to use them properly.

I've used KAV7, Ccleaner, Spybot, Ad-aware, Spyware Terminator - All came back clean. I even cleaned out my nvidia drivers and reinstalled them - still the same. Unfortunately the solution seems to evade those that it afflicts and a fix is usually never found according to the threads I've read.

I'm going to try and disconnect the SATA optical drive and try my old IDE optical drive. The reason is someone on CD Freaks forum had the exact same problem as me about a year ago. Installed a Sony Optiarc SATA Optical drive and this problem started to affect him in the same way as it is affecting me now.

In the END he couldn't find the problem so I'm not too happy at this moment.

So I'm still stuck as to what to do next. I'm going to try and repair my XP installation, failing that I will try a clean installation using first my SATA writer and then if that fails revert back to my IDE writer and see if that makes a difference.

I'm on windows XP SP3.

Has anyone suffered anything similar?Quote from: Man_With_Beard on July 12, 2008, 05:08:33 AM

Did you have this problem in your 'old case?'

I'm a literal reader! Does this mean that the only hardware change was the external case and the Sony DVD, i.e., you put the old motherboard, video, harddrive, etc, into the new case? What about power supply?

Is this computer on a network?

Does the computer exhibit any 'problems' - slowness, etc.

Have you tried to create a new user profile per the MS article that you referenced? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555021)

Have you verified that the only copies of the two files are in C:\Windows\System32?

The more info that we have the better chance of finding a solution.

Also, try to install Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
It'll show you sub-processes of csrss.exe

Solve : how to change the installation directory for an application??

Answer»

I've oracle installed in my system. due to memory deficiency and CONCERNING about the future circumstances which may arise, Is there any way to change the installation directory for Oracle without reinstalling it.
current installation directory is C:\OracleXe
I want it to be D:\OracleXe

here is windows xp sp3

such that, the application will work as it before.

sanI think not. As you know, a multitude of entries get added to Windows registry during software installation. You need to uninstall Orcacle and then install it at that new location.

Do not MERELY try to move the program folder for Orcale program files to a different location via Windows Explorer. That would most likely mess things up and make Orcale inoperative on your system.Quote from: soybean on July 11, 2008, 11:36:56 AM

the installation path is C:\OracleXe
Don't PLAY with fire!Uninstall and REINSTALL is the only way to go.
Apart from the entries in registry the Oracle DB registers several services that won't work if you just move the install directory.Hey, Deerpark. I didn't see you for a while....Hi Broni.

Solve : Do not take any updates from windows??

Answer»

huh?

Im having this problem. My OS: Windows XP home

With my last windows UPDATE I've been having serious issues accessing the internet.

The story is, after the last update I can not access the internet, no matter what I do(NOTHING HAS ACCESS TO INTERNET), it just doesn't let me.
So I had no other choice than system restore, TWICE!

After first system restore, it was stupid ENOUGH to give me the same update AGAIN which forced me to system restore again. It happens after it REQUIRES a restart.

Any ideas how to solve this,

umm MAYBE you could tell me how to make my COMPUTER not to download/install the latest windows updates. Maybe I could turn it off or something.

ThanksDo you use Zone Alarm? There is a fix.

Solve : HELP Computer Goes Black!?

Answer»

Alright, to explain the problem, it isn't what I would consider a computer-ending flaw. It's annoying as h**l, and does tend to make doing anything extremely difficult. But doing things by definition of functioning, it accomplishes that.

Where it is falling short is every so often and, seemingly randomly, my computer will have the monitor 'cut off' and it will then either reset itself or it'll just whine that there's no signal even after reconnected a few times, to the point the only solution IS a improper restart. [[Which before I reformatted in hopes of FIXING this problem, it doing this about 52x consecutively caused incredible amounts of damage.]]

Just for the record...
- No the monitor's power button isn't stuck.
- Yes, I tried a different monitor.
- I have tried a different and new Video Card, but... the problem PREVAILS.
- It does not strike up any flags on anti-virus software; I tried Cyber-Defender.
- I did try a reformat, which I suspect even a worm, virus, or trojan would be destroyed from. The problem Prevails even now.
- Reading similar problems I tried double checking all connecting cords to the PC and monitor; again. But... yeah, same issue.
- I downloaded my video driver today after reformatting from NVIDIA, so it's most likely the newest one as well.

[[If any of those seem insulting, I apologise. I was asked some questions I felt really were unnecessary when I first went to others for help. The worst one being, "Is it plugged in?"]]

The cords on each monitor have been different and they have always been securely fastened to the PC; everything's in visibly proper and working order.

I'd really like help with this, because I'm already upset at losing so much information just from the reformat failing. And I want to know if I can avoid having to tighten my budget further by going to a repair specialist who; would likely at this point tell me "I need a new PC."

THANKS :>Since you have told us absolutely nothing about the computer and its HARDWARE, I doubt if we can offer anything more than the notion that it's probably hardware related. And you might well need a new PC.
See What information should I provide?

Tip: The monitor should not be disconnected or connected to computer while power is on (either monitor or computer). Neither should a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. Or anything to the parallel or serial port. You may, however, unplug or plug to a USB port while power is on (but Safely Eject USB external disks or flash drives before unplugging them to prevent data loss).

What do you mean by "reset itself"? Does the computer automatically reboot and attempt to restart Windows?

When "it'll just whine that there's no signal", has Windows shutdown and the computer restarted? The flash sequence of the LEDs on the keyboard, computer tower (power, hard drive activity), floppy drive and CD-ROM drives may answer this.

How old is the computer? Has the dust inside the computer ever been cleaned out? The thermal paste between processor and heatsink ever been refreshed? * Microsoft XP Pro.
* I already said this.
* There isn't a manufacturer, it's a custom built PC.
* Not having a problem with any noted software, or object. It seems largely as though the problems are unprovoked.
* Already mentioned I updated the drivers.
* When did the issue start occurring? <-- Not certain, it's been happening for a while now, it just wasn't ever this bad.

Computer is about four years old, currently using Nvidia GeForce4 MX 4000 for the video card. The audio driver stopped working a long while ago; so I do not have one of those at the moment. If it's a custom build, then please let us know...

1. Motherboard brand and model
2. CPU type and speed
3. Amount and brand and type of RAM
4. Number, type(s) and size(s) of HDDs & optical drives.
5. Brand and power rating of PSU
6. Brand and model of DISPLAY card.
7. Any recent (or not so recent?) hardware changes such as display card, cpu, extra hard drive etc (Maybe adding to power drain & pushing the PSU over the edge)
8. If you have disturbed items within the case (see next item)
9 If you have checked that RAM, power connectors, CPU, disk drive data and power cables are all connected and/or seated correctly, and CPU fan is working OK and the heatsink is not clogged with dust or fluff.
10. What you mean by your audio driver stopping working. Is it the sound chip or card?
11. Do you see any entries in the Event Log that might be indicative?

Without this information, we will be going by guesswork, and maybe even then, but my feeling is failing PSU or RAM, if checks in item (9) are all OK

Solve : Backup files from non destructive Restore?

Answer»

I had some computer issues yesterday and after TRYING everything I could think of, ended up doing a non destructive restore. All of my files were mover to a backup FILE and stored on the hard drive. Now that everything is up and running right again, how do I get the files out of the back up file and back where they belong? Also I lost all my bookmarks, is there any way to get them back.

Thank you so much for any help anyone can give. Can you TELL us exactly what you did?

Also, look here:
We need more information, Please look here.I'm using Windows XP and Firefox.

I'll try to explain the best I can. Like I said I was having comp. issues and I tried everything I could think of to get it running right.
So I restarted my comp. and hit F11 and from there choose the nondestructive restore option. That backed up all my files and such into a file called, ironically enough, Backup Files. Now I found that folder on the hard drive, but I'm not sure of the best way to get all that back to my computer where it belongs.

If there is no way to send it all back where it belongs, what is the best way to get the not so easily replaceable stuff back?

And also I'm guess since things are rarely lost forever on a computer, that my bookmarks are in there somewhere too. How do I get them back? Or can I?What, exactly, is in that folder you found called "Backup Files"?Everything pretty much. All the programs that where on my computer before I restored. Games, pictures, security programs, everything.

Most of it would probably be easier to reinstall new, but alot of it isn't as easily replaced.I think you will have to re install any software that you installed since the computer was new. Data such as pictures, etc, will be in folders that you can just copy and paste using Windows Explorer. if there is a folder in the backup section called Documents and Settings you may FIND a Firefox folder containing a bookmarks.html file.

The standard location will be something like Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\nlqmgqma.default\bookmarks.html

You can use Windows Search to hunt for it.

By copy and paste does that mean to right click on the file? How exactly do i get into Windows Explorer? *duck and hide* Yeah I know that's a stupid question, but for the life of me I just don't know.

Well, bookmarks.html would be a good start.

I didn't think so either. But I don't know, they are still there, they were just moved. *shrug*Sounds like you used a proprietary 'non-destructive restore' that is built into your computer - if this is correct, why don't you go to the computer maker's website and get the information on the procedure that you used. The site may have all of the info you need to complete your procedure.

Solve : How to change filename????????????

Answer»

please help me how can i change or rename a file????where do i need to go in WINDOWS,here the sample...

c:\Documents and Settings\DJ-DASH>

i want to change the DJ-DASH to another name but i dont know how...please help mee....

thanksI don't think you can change that. Many programs require that name.
For example, look on your desktop. Everything there is located under C:\Documents and Settings\DJ-DASH\Desktop.Not sure if he needs to change the PATH but just the file name itself...
To do so from Windows Explorer find the file...right clik it and select Rename. To change your user name (DJ-DASH):
1. Click START -> Control Panel > User Accounts
2. Click the account, and then click 'Change my name'
I did that when I first GOT one of my 'experimental' computers. It changed the username but not the filename. It can't be done, no matter what.
If you absolutely must change it, create a new user account and copy all the files and settings over.

Solve : Hang ups?

Answer»

I am plagued by frequent hang ups when trying to open a program or getting it to run properly. I have done the regular maintenance like defragging, virus checking, etc. Still it frequently freezes. What should I do? How are your startup PROGRAMS?

Go to Start --> Run --> msconfig and press Enter.
Head over to the Startup tab and uncheck as MANY programs as you can (accept your antivirus)
Note: Any programs unchecked can still be run after startup.

Then I suggest downloading and installing CCleaner.
When you run it, you can uncheck everything if you WANT except System --> Temporary Files
Run the cleaner.
Now go over to the Registry section in CCleaner and run the scanner and removal a few times.

See what happens after that.

Hangs can also be caused by other reasons. If this is a recent PROBLEM, it might be fixed by this. Then again, it might not.
I guess, some computer INFO is needed.Yeah I held off that on purpose.

RAM and Processor would be useful.Along with Windows version, hard drive size/free space.Ok you caught me. Well, we just need to cooperate, that's all....hehehe

Solve : Reading old e-mail?

Answer»

I have a lot of old email files saved on my computer back from when I had a local ISP. I can't read them, other than PAGES of html code and such in Firefox. I'd like to know which program could open these in their ORIGINAL form, pictures and all. I was using an older version of Netscape at the time, which I have deleted. I'm using Win98 and a slow dialup connection. Any ideas?

Need more info. How did you access your email with your former ISP? Was it web-mail or POP mail? If web-mail, how did you "save" it to your computer?I'm sorry if I was a little vague about my situation. All of my mail was saved to my POP3 providers mail folder in the WINDOWS application files. I used Netscape 7 to open and read it. I only recently found where they were kept. I had figured I had probably deleted them when I deleted Netscape 7. Firefox 2 or IE6 will open them as will Word, but like I said, they're all html code.
Thanks for your reply. This is unclear.
You say, that you think, you deleted those emails when you uninstalled Netscape, but apparently those messages still EXIST, correct?
It's possible, if when uninstalling Netscape, you didn't delete your profile.
Now, we need to know, where exactly they are located in your computer (provide path), and what type of files they are (extension).
What email program are you using now?
What Windows version?

I have a THINKPAD T60p running XP, and i need to reformat. Unfortunately for me i can't find the XP cds. Is there any way to reformat without the cds? I heard there was a partial recovery feature in the data recovery program of IBM's thinkpad LAPTOPS, but i'm not sure if it requires the XP cds.
thanks for any help.If your laptop has a D: drive for MFR system restore, it will likely not need the CD's. Be sure to BACKUP your data on different media before a restore.http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery

Solve : Screen resolution keeps changing after restart?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with the resolution on a computer. The problem is after doing a repair installation it's screen resolution changes from what it is set, to another setting. Even after setting it and applying the setting it would change on REBOOT. I'm going to try to install the windows updates and the latest video card driver and SEE if that solves it.

Any other ideas would MUCH APPRECIATED.

Solve : error checking c drive when installing windows?

Answer»

when installing windows on a brand new partition it formats fine but then when it trys to verify it displays this message...

setup was unable to verify drive c:

Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the drives, or your windows cd may contain some corrupted files.

Press ENTER to continue.....

then it stop at the driver.cab file which of COURSE is imprtant and will cause windows not to work.

where can i start.... is it actually my windows memory if i'm using 1 GIG ram or should i just get a new windows cd? I found this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822796well actually i guess i'm only at around 300mb ish ram

but tried different hard drives. it is a brand new mothoboard and old one gave me same problem so the other one p[robly good now too.

ummm psu maybe?
more ram?

graphics card?

sound card? (could this cause it since it does have onboard sound?)
i have fail safe bios settings on.

what you guys suggestions or where would you start? If you've tried difference hard drives, it's possible there is a problem with the Windows Disc.
Can you try another one? (borrow one)What version of Windows are you trying to install?

Is the CD a copy or is it a legitimate version?

Is the CD damaged, scratched...or need a cleaning?i am using a copied cd ..... but this cd has worked on many other computers like 20 installations....

and the cd doesn't matter if it's a burned cd what matter is the cd key..... which btw is valid.

it's not the cd it gotta be something else.....my question is is what hardware part would cause a failure like this.....

my uncle said psu and once he said that i thought it was very logical....
i should have plenty of ram i installed windows xp pro sp2 on machines with 64 mb ram
Did you read Carbon Dudeoxide's previous post from Microsoft?

Quote

This problem may occur for one of the following reasons:

• The motherboard of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The BIOS of your computer may not be compatible with Windows XP.
• The hard disk you are installing to may be damaged.
• The Windows XP Setup CD may be damaged.
ummm yes i did i troubleshooted the hdd as i said and told you it's not that it's not the cd because there is not a single scratch on it or any dirt and dust and it is a compatible motho board because itsays designed for windows xp....................Just for kicks and giggles...do you have another CD drive you can use to try and install XP?

Call it a hunch, but if it isn't anything related to what we've already recommended...it may, in fact. be the optical drive.Quote
my uncle said psu and once he said that i thought it was very logical....
I don't see how the PSU would contribute to this error. The PSU regulates power throughout the computer.
However, we can't pass on anything...well i AGREE to you to a point. although i do think it could have been the cause of why my old motherboard's capacitors were popping out. my uncle was telling me how some ac voltage was coming through when of course computers use DC. yeah I'm stumped.

i really don't think it's the CD I've used it on many computers before.
and i don't think the hard drive either because it performed fine up until i just felt like reinstalling windows.
i was getting some blue screen of death with old mother board and that board internal Grahics wouldn't work.

so i replaced it with this new board which is windows xp compatible.

still gives me same error message as old board though which means it wasn't the board. i am using good ram because it performed properly in other computers.

graphic card is nothing out of the ordinary and never was over clocked a few years old but should be fine never had any problems with it ever!

psu is not a name brand psu (Cheifmax) so i believe it could easily fail.

and CPU should be fine..... and if it makes it that far into installation it's gotta be OK.

the mortarboard i am using has integrated audio but i put a sound card in so better performance in games.
This might be causing compatibility issues if it can't decide which one to use. i guess i will just pop it out and see.Quote
i am using a copied cd ..... but this cd has worked on many other computers like 20 installations....

This is probably the issue...whether it's worked in the past or not.
That and the amount of RAM.

Why not add some RAM which is cheap right now and borrow a legit XP CD if you have a legit key ? ?well i'm trying the ram thing right now, but if the cd works with as many installations as it has it shouldn't be the problem. but thank you your probly the best person on here so far you just gave me the straight to the point answear.

(Probly Ram) can't get much simpler then that. Thanks

I can access vista through safemode but into safemode i m not getting format option.
So anyother way to do Format of vista ?

If you have the Windows XP CD with you, all you have to do is Boot FROM the CD and it will run you through the setup of Windows XP (formatting the old Vista partition)You may have to change the device boot ORDER in your BIOS so that you boot from the CD before you boot from the hard drive.Thank U for suggestion
But that is not working. i alredy have first boot device is cd rom into BIOS. But i dont know its not booting by xp cd. and when i browse that cd into safemode its not gaves me that install option either.

I had the local computer company try to solve this for me and they were unsuccessful
with all of their REGISTERED copies they got the same results clicking on the 242975us.exe file link supplied by MS just takes you back to the former page of windows 98 download They informed me that the link is evidently faulty. I find it hard to believe that this is the only place to obtain this file but in searching the internet I find none.

Solve : Help with logging in!?

This problem occurred suddenly this morning. I finished a session with my Gateway laptop computer but Windows kept on SAYING that an update was ready and that the computer needed to restart for the update to be in effect. So I turned the computer off. I came back a couple hours later, and I tried to click on my profile in the login screen to log me into my user profile. This message came up: “Windows cannot load locally stored profile. POSSIBLE causes of this error include insufficient SECURITY rights or a corrupt LOCAL profile” followed by “Cannot find the local profile. Logging on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.” Then it logs me on to this completely different profile with none of my previous applications and none of my documents. Solve : Windows XP Activation?

Answer»

alright i was an idiot i got windows XP Home edition illegally off the internet, and everything sucked. My computer had so many problems it was unbearable. I only had it for 30 days and i had error after error, and i only had it for 30 days because the windows activation crack i got didnt work. When i logged on it still asked me to Activate it so id click Yes (otherwise it would log me off) and a windows popped up saying windows is already activated so i click ok and it starts normally but after 30 days i lick ok and it logs me off anyways i start in safe mode same thing, the crack sucked. So i didnt want to deal with any of that crap again so i went out and bought a legit copy of Windows XP Pro but it wont work i cant open EXPLORER or any thing else to access the CD. I've tried booting from disc but but but when it says "press any key to boot from disc..." i press enter and it just freezes there ive waited 2 hours (went to see the Hulk, that movie rocks) and still nothing. I tried to do the right thing since the wrong obviously doesn't work. Whats wrong here? Please Help.Go here...

http://bootdisk.com/

Download the disks for XP and do a complete format of the DRIVE.

Alan <>< my computer wont boot from disc thats the main problem here because i have a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro but i cant use it because the computer wont boot from disc or it doesn't give me Explorer or the task manager to open explorer so...

i had an idea that maybe i COULD take 1 of the hard drives from my computer put it in another then use the other computer to clear the partition n my hard drive then repeat for my 2nd hard drive. would this work and how would i do it im not so good with hooking up hard drives, too many power supply cords. If you have access to another computer then you can remove the hard drive that has Windows on it / connect it to another pc via an external drive case / right click My Computer/ choose MANAGE / choose Disk Management / right-click the external drive / choose delete partition.

Alan <>< Are you changing the boot order in BIOS or are you just inserting the disk and rebooting? If you change the boot order and save changes, then your hard drive should not have anything to do with the inability to boot from the optical drive. Can you hear the disk spinning in the drive? Have you been inside the case recently?yeah I've tried that too changing the devices to bot to ONLY disc but still it just freezes and no i don't hear the disc (or anything in the Disc drive) spinning. Can i hook up th hard drive internally i don't have any external hard drive hook ups that i know of, this wont hurt my parents' computer will it?If you don't hear the disk spinning in the drive, then it sounds like a hardware issue. When was the last time any CD (like a game or music CD) worked in that drive? If the computer has two optical drives make sure you are putting the disk in the master drive(usually the top ONE). If you don't have two optical drives then maybe you could try to swap a known good one into your computer. Once you have installed Windows then you can swap it back.

I just replaced a motherboard in a home built computer. It is an Intel D865PESO socket 478 Motherboard with a 2.4Ghz CPU, AGP interface. The only other piece of hardware installed is a GeForce Ti4200 video card. My power supply is 650 Watts.

This must have been a Gateway replacement board because on startup I get a default Gateway splash screen with the press F2 for BIOS or F12 for MENU, and that is all I get...everything stops there. It will not POST and it will not allow me to go to BIOS. It almost acts like my keyboard doesn't work when I press F2 or F12 or delete or anything else, but I have power to it.

I have tried reconnecting everything and also RAM swaps and removals, IDE ribbon removals and absence of Floppy Drive.
My keyboard has a PC connector and I have not tried a USB keyboard, yet.

Solve : Wiping a Comp?

Answer»

Ok, so I recently built myself a new computer, and am looking to GET rid of my previous computer: An XP run eMachine. Only, I need to know how to wipe the memory. And if I do, will the OS stay? Or would the new RECIPIENT have to re-install it (as I dont think I still own the disks...).

So essentially, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me the basics of wiping a comps memory (how-to, what not to do, dangers, etc.).

Thanks in advance. Doiing a full wipe CLEANS everything off the hard drive. You will no longer have windows loaded on the machine.

If you want to sell it with Windows than you would have to reload it.

There are 3rd party programs out there on the web that you can use to wipe your system clean. Use google to do a search. I am also sure some people here can suggest a free ones.

They all work PRETTY MUCH the same. They write data to the drive over and over so your data is gone and can't be read.

Solve : Changing resolution as part of IE 7 installation?

Answer»

Hi:

I installed Internet Explorer 7.0 today. At one point during the installation process, the software prompted me to choose between a few different varieties of the same font - the differences (I think) were MOSTLY in terms of the contrast, resolution, perhaps the spacing of the letters. The new setting I chose (very quickly without too much consideration, alas) has basically taken over all of my Microsoft applications - for example, if I print out a Word DOCUMENT now, the print is much darker and thus uses much more ink, than the old setting. But even worse, the new screen resolution really bothers my eyes and gives me a headache! I'd like to go back to the default settings but haven't been able to figure out how to do that. I reinstalled IE 7, hoping it would take me thru the same choices, but the second time around, I wasn't asked to choose the resolution. Can anyone help? Thanks much.

LingoQPS I'm using WINDOWS XP Professional.
PPS I also tried to REVERT to IE 6, and something about the IE 7 software wouldn't let me. At this point, I'd be happy to go back to IE 6. Perhaps that's what I should do., but is there a way?

Thanks.Right click on an empty part of your desktop and choose properties at the bottom. This should take you to display properties. Click the settings tab near the top. You can change your screen resolution here.

Solve : USB POWER PROBLEM?

I have another USB port in the back of the computer that works. when I attached the flash DRIVE to it all the pictures on the card are uploaded. . I don't load pictures from the camera with a USB cable. The USB ports that are not functional are located in the front of the computer. If the front ports are not working and the back ports are, I think it's safe to assume that you have somehow shorted out the front USB Ports LIKE Dias De Verano said.It must have been when I TRIED to transfer pictures from the cell phone. I am going to have a self-powered USB installed, I guess that's the only way I can utilize the pictures from the phone. Thanks again for all your input. I would be lost without out this forum.
No problem.

Just a side note, you can get a USB Hub (something that plugs into ONE USB port and it gives you an extra 4-8 ports).

Good luck.If I get this hub, won't useing it (with it's four ports) cause the only USB I have left on the computer, to overload as well? I only plan to use one device at a TIME, but after this fiasco with the cell phone, I'm hesitant. There is a possibility. Quote from: janey9 on June 24, 2008, 08:48:15 AM

To avoid that problem in the future, get a powered hub like this...

... not an unpowered one like this

Thanks so much, that's what I'll get.The unpowered one looks so simple Some cell phones automatically start charging the battery off the USB port when you attach them, and some USB controller chips don't like that.

Solve : Windows update weirdness?

Answer»

I am working on 15 library computers with clean installs of Windows XP with SP2. These are Optiplex GX280's, 512mb ram. There is nothing on them but Windows, Office, Firefox, Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, Quicktime and a custom desktop graphic.

The problem is that I can not update Windows.

After the image was installed I opened IE and selected Windows update from the TOOLS menu. The INITIAL update was to have ActiveX installed so the updated Windows update COULD run. That installed with no problem. The fun began when I went to continue with the updates. I opened up Windows update and selected custom. The progress bar starts moving across the screen and after about 3-4 minutes the window closes. It gives no warning or error message, it is as if I had clicked on the close button.

I thought this was an isolated thing so I went through the process with two other computers. I had the same thing happen. I spoke with DOE technicians and they have never seen this happen.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Or a way to stop it from happening? And how can I update Windows?

Thanks

**Yes, I am using the administrator account.
**There are other computers in the school that do not have this problem.
**The installation was done yesterday. So all of these machines are clones or images of each other? You know that during the update Microsoft looks to see if the S/N is good and not used to copy across machines?

YEAH, I know. The version of Windows is the enterprise version and is used as the basis of ALL the installs used for this school district. It is a legitimate copy and has been used before. The only difference is the drivers for each specific machine.EUREKA!! It turns out that one of the services, Cisco security agent, was preventing the downloads. It is a new addition to the standard image which is why the other school computers were having no problems. I disabled it and Windows update ran with no problems.

Thanks for reading and catch you next time.
Glad to hear that you got it running....

Enjoy!

I just read this thread...and was going to recommend a firewall security SOFTWARE package or hardware device was probably the culprit...but I'm always a day late and a dollar short.

Glad you got it worked out...

Solve : date and time issues with XP?

Answer»

My date and time on my system is stuck on one date and will only work properly for one hour at a time. i.e. I set the date for June 20th and two days LATER I still show June 20th. Also the time goes only in 1 hour CYCLES, i.e. 10:15am - 11:15am and instead of GOING to 11:16 it starts back over at 10:15. Could this be my motherboard BATTERY?QUOTE from: video1 on June 24, 2008, 10:25:28 AM

Solve : Installing SATA Controller & Drive in XP Machine?

Answer»

With advice and suggestions from this forum, I ordered a 500 gb Seagate SATA II drive for an aging XP MACHINE. A friend gave me a Sabrent (I think) PCI SATA controller board, plus a driver disk dating from 2005. This disk has a minimalistic help file, with SATA drivers for various PLATFORMS, including XP. I suspect there are newer drivers (the controller has a VIA chip), and the instructions for installation are, at best, confusing. I managed to find some sketchy info at the VIA website. This info seems to indicate that a new install of Windows may be necessary to get the system to recognize the new SATA drive. If the target PC has SP3 installed, but has never had a SATA drive, is a new or repair install of Windows necessary to get the new SATA drive installed and functioning? I've read various articles, some of which seem to indicate a new, or repair, install of XP is necessary - and at least one source indicates that if SP3 is already installed, a repair or new install won't be required. Maybe one of you Windows experts can answer this off the top of your head - or at least point me to an authoritative SATA to XP reference source.

Thanks in advance. To update my original post - Yesterday, I finally received the new SATA hard drive which I ordered a week earlier. Because I USED it to replace (as opposed to augment, or add to), the PCs original IDE drive, I was required to do a clean install of XP on the new SATA drive. The old Sabrent PCI SATA controller worked, and the old driver included with the card installed without major problems. All my questions (except one) seem to have been resolved by going thru the steps of the process itself. The one issue, minor as it seems to be, is just a little irritating, When the machine is booting up, I see a screen which says that no Drive 0 has been found; immediately afterward there is a screen which announces the model number of the Seagate SATA drive which I installed; then two beeps are sounded; then a screen prompt to press F1 to try to boot again or F2 to enter setup. At this point, I press F1 ever so briefly, after which the machine boots from the new SATA drive in a completely normal fashion. Since this is my first experience with booting a SATA drive from a PCI controller, I don't know if this is normal behavior during bootup, or if there is some switch or setting I can adjust which would make the F1 key press no longer necessary. I would appreciate any relevant info which forum participants may PROVIDE.

Solve : Internet related freezing problem?

Answer»

so its only the fist time on bootp when it trys to access the internet? WIFI or eathernet it doesn't matter.....WiFi, ethernet, dialup and EVDO connections all prompt this freezing problem

and yea, its only the 1st time UPON bootFrankly speaking, I've never seen anything like that.
Try running sfc /SCANNOW, or MAYBE even Windows repair...i give up, i'll just have to reformat and reinstall windows i guessUnfortunately, in some cases, it may be the only way.
