Solve : How do I reactivate a program and files that are saved in Backup files??

Answer»

I had to take my computer (emachines) back to ORIGINAL condition after 2 years of junk buildup. The computer saved the files in a backup program but I don't know how to get the ones back that I want to use...itunes, picassa, mail addresses, old mail, music files, etc.. I am running explorer 7 on pc..any ideas??Quote

The computer saved the files in a backup program but I don't know how to get the ones back that I want to use
Well, you need to know what that "backup program" was. Unless you can provide some details, I SUSPECT you did not actually get stuff backed up that you thought you did.

PROGRAMS, such as itunes and picassa will almost certainly have to be reinstalled from the original CD or download file. Stuff like mail addresses, old mail, music files will have been permanently lost if you did not actually get them backed up to an external media, or you do not know what software you used to backup certain files and where those files were saved.

Did you burn files to a CD or copy them to a flash drive or external hard drive before restoring your system? If not, what makes you think you'll be able to restore them now?I used the xp program supplied with the computer called system restore. I did the full system restore with backup. This brought my computer back to original issue and placed all the old files in the "my backup" on c drive. I know the files are there because I can go to:my computer>c drive>my backup>program files>and all my old files (icons)are there. Example..windows media player...I recorded about 25 cd's and I can go throgh the above procedure and SEE all the cd's but I don't know how to get them out of the backup file to be active on the computer. Thanks for your help...I'm obviously a rookie!System Restore is found in Windows by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools. It does not, as you said, "brought my computer back to original issue and placed all the old files in the "my backup" on c drive." System Restore can be used to restore Windows to it's status on a previous date but Windows does not normally store more than a few weeks of "restore points".

Quote
I did the full system restore with backup.
As I previously said, "you need to know what that 'backup program' was." Windows has a backup utility called Backup, also found under Start, All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools, but I DOUBT that what's you're referring to.

Quote
This brought my computer back to original issue and placed all the old files in the "my backup" on c drive.
Windows XP has standard folders named My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music. It does not have one called "my backup". So, that would be a folder you, or the software you used, created.

Quote

What type of files are these "backup" files? In other words, what's the file extension name, the part of the file name after the "."? For example, if I create a backup using Windows Backup, the backup files will have .bkf as the file extension. So, if I backed up the My Documents folder and gave the backup job the same name, I would see a backup file called My Documents.bkf.

On the other hand, if some other backup software were used, the file extension might be something other than .bkf. So, the file extension gives a clue to what program was used to create the file. So, again, what's the file extension on your backup files?

Solve : Rather slow computer...?

Answer»

My windows XP seems to have started initializing slowly when I first start it up, as well as other very strange occurrences such as spots where my files are invisible on my desktop when I use windows D until I open a file on it, and tabs in firefox using the same title for all tabs. I'm pretty sure I don't have any viruses, although I don't have much space left. ANYONE have any speed-improvement tips? Not having space left is probably the main contributor to this conditinn...start backing things up and getting RID of unneccessary programs and consider adding another drive for storage...Strange that LOW space does weird stuff but... Ahh well, I'll get a backup drive, thanks for helpingWell Windows uses empty HDD space on a regular basis ...it's called a swapfile and acts as memory...basically it's a temporary parking lot for files that are used to run whatever programs you are using.

A good rule of thumb is to not go below 15% total free space.
So if you have an 80G HDD for example you should have a minimum of 12G Free space.

Hope this helps...Dear patio, thanks for your advice to maintain at least 15% of disk space free, but allow me -and yourself- to LOL. Or . The disk CAPACITY of my Compaq laptop is 6 GB (no naught missing), which was a rather acceptable figure almost ten years ago. My work consists mainly of text processing and email correspondence with attachments every now and then, and it is allright for me. Plans for replacement are ready, just waiting for my Financial 50% to agree. Meanwhile, after wiping out temporary and garbage files YESTERDAY, I have now more than 0,4 GB at my disposal! Half of what you recommend.
Take care.Good news...housekeeping is important...especially on a laptop.Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner

Solve : multiple OS?

Answer» RECENTLY i installed a new OS of XP in drive D. the old VERSION was in C . i deleted all the files in C. still its showing a use of 10 GB. why?? i want to format it. how to do it?it cant be formated even using CMD as it contain system files. so is there any way using bootable disc to COMPLETELY format drive C. and keeping the OS in drive D. pls TELL Windows by default likes to be on C:
However it can be installed to any partition/drive you select.
It will still always write files to C: and allocate some space to run properly.
I'm afraid without more info on how you did this and what you want to accomplish here that only guesswork will ensue.
More Details.Quote

If you look at C with Windows Explorer, what do you see?

Or, OPEN a Command Prompt panel and use the dir command to see what's on C.My guess is depending on how he managed this is the swapfile and System Restore files are landing there...

Solve : Hard drive failure! HELP!?

Answer»

one of my hard drives has a physical problem! there is beeping sounds coming from it!
When i try to start my computer with the hard disk with the problem in (and have it connected as slave, and the working one as master) the bios then only finds the other one , and then i cant find it at all in windows! When i have the hard disk with the problem (connected as master) then the bios finds them both , but when i try to start it doesnt ENTER windows, it EITHER comes up : INSERT BOOT DISK , or it just restarts!
All i want to do is to recover the files!

Can someone please help me!! i relly want help!
i am using windows xp and the hard DRIVE is a maxtor sabre. You'll need to get something like "Recover My Files" or "Get Data Back" and take the bad hard drive, put it in as a secondary hard drive in a working PC, or get an IDE to USB adapter and plug it in that way. Then run the recovery software on the drive. If you have important files on the drive I recommend having a professional do it.Quote from: TheEmperor on February 11, 2008, 08:14:32 AM

will that work even if when i have the bad hard drive connected to the computer as secondary hard drive and when it starts up it says secondary hard drive failure or doesnt find it at all?? Is there a chance it will find the hard drive if i use a IDE to USB adapter?

Thanks for writing. There is a very SMALL chance. If the drive isn't spinning up then you are out of luck. If it spins up but windows can't see it you might still be able to recover some data from it with that software.Quote from: TheEmperor on February 21, 2008, 09:49:38 AM

what do you mean with freezing the hard drive??Hard drives do not beep...
Remove the drive from the machine and hook it up to a known working machine (preferably with a burner) as a slave drive and copy/burn the Data you need.
Try this before the FREEZER method as we don't know if it's the drive that's failing or another component in your machine...

Solve : start problems?

Answer»

im running windows xp, and as of about 30 minutes ago, my explorer crashed and wont re-open on my administrator user account on my home PC. it will load as far as the desktop, but explorer will not launch, and i cant even use Task Manager to manually launch explorer, or any other program.

curve ball, explorer launches if i switch user accounts to my guest account, but the start menu/tool bar and my desktop ICONS blink in and out, like explorer is trying to restart itself. I am still unable to launch other programs from the Guest user account, making system restore and my control panel unaccessible, along with any virus scanners or security programs.Do you get any errors?

Also have you TRIED doing this through safe mode?no error messages, and booting in safe mode yields the same results. first time ive ever seen or heard of anything like this.Have you tried creating a new User account to see if it works properly ? ?
If it does you will need to REPAIR the existing accounts.i cant access the control panel, so i cant reach the add user features.Try clicking Start, Run, TYPE: compmgmt.msc and press enter. This should open the Computer Management window that will allow you to get to Local Users and Groups. In there you can right-click and create a new user.No dice. Do you have a Windows XP CD ? ?
If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have the CD handy as it will ASK for it.
Let it run to completion and re-boot.

Solve : computer re-booting intermittently?

Answer»

My wife's desktop computer is re-booting intermittently. This can occur at any time, during any program.
It may occur immediately after startup or while using Email or while surfing the web. I suspect a possible
power supply failure but would like to hear from some experts about this.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Windows XP SP2
1G RAM 2.6 MHz
80 G HDDYou should start by disabling the automatic reboot on ERROR feature that is on by default in XP. This way we can have a look at any blue screens XP might be hiding.

Right click my computer and select properties
Select the advanced tab
Press the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery frame
Uncheck "Automatically restart" and leave the menus with OK.

Now (hopefully) the computer will give you a blue screen error MESSAGE instead of restarting.
Write down the STOP error code and any filenames mentioned on the blue screen and post back the info.
Here is an example of a blue screen.

Thank You Deerpark for your help.

I did as you suggested, unfortunately a BSOD NEVER did show up to give a clue about what might be happening.

After a couple of days, the computer would not start at all, no fans etc.
I replaced the power supply and all of the fans would operate but still had
a black screen, no video. Also, no beeps were happening during start up.
My son suggested that EITHER the CPU or motherboard were bad.
Fortunately, I found an exact replacement motherboard and an only slightly
slower CPU on line. I have installed those and my wife's computer is now up
and running. I'm really proud of having been able to ACCOMPLISH this as I have never replaced a motherboard before!

Thanks again for your help.

P.S. Is there any way I could test to see which of the old parts is bad, the CPU or Mb, outside of the now working computer?Well I didn't really do much, seems like you managed to fix it on your own.

Regarding the old parts. You can't really test the parts without putting them in a running computer.
You could install the old CPU on the new mobo. If problems resurface it's the CPU, if not it's the mobo.

Solve : Moving Programs from C drive to E drive?

Answer»

Sorry if this been asked before but I an new and am not sure what to search for.

I would like to move programs(like Microsoft office) from my C drive to the E drive that I created(partitioned) when I installed XP -SP2 several months ago.

Everything seems to work fine except that the C drive is getting full and there is lots of room on the E drive.

I don't thnik it is as simple as copying from one drive to the other and then Deleting it from the C drive, is it? Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DanI had to perform this very task. Make sure you have a LOT of spare time on your hands, in addition to the installation media for all the stuff you want to move, since you will unfortunately need to uninstall and re-install the SOFTWARE you want to move.

I don't know if this is true, but there might be programs designed to move software intact from one drive to another.

If at all possible you could do a partition to partition copy with a utility program to duplicate the files from C:\ to E:\ and install what is E: into a new C:\ drive.Quote

... you will unfortunately need to uninstall and re-install the software you want to move.
True.

Why not just pick a few of the larger programs you have installed and move them to E: via uninstall and reinstall? And, what about your My Documents folder? Is it on C:? How large is it? Moving it to E: is an easy step. To do it, right click on My Documents, SELECT Properties, click on the Move button, and specify E:\ as the new location. This will move My Pictures and My MUSIC, also, since they are sub-folders of My Documents. Thanks for the responses. I do not keep much in the My Documents folder but unfortunately I have loaded most programs on the C drive. I guess I will have to bite the bullit and do the Uninstall/Install dance. The other option is to buy a larger HDD
You can then USE the drive manuf. utility to "clone" your old drive to the newer one.
You can then use the old drive for storage.
If you decide on this option post back for instructions...That sounds like an interesting option. Could you tell me more about what would need to be done?

ThanksQuote from: dynodan08 on February 20, 2008, 09:21:22 PM

It's actually pretty simple.
The new drive gets hooked up jumpered as a slave drive on your machine with the master being your current drive.

II==================================II============II

MBoard Slave Master.

You then boot to the manuf. utility CD that comes with the new drive. Select the "clone" option and let it do it's thing.
When finished power down the machine.
You then remove your old drive completely....hook up the new drive jumpered and cabled as master and re-boot.
Your OS, programs and all your data will be there. Run it for a few days to make sure everything is OK and if so re-introduce the old drive as slave and format it and use it for extra storage.

The entire process should take between 40 minutes to an hour.

Solve : start menu item not deleting?

Answer»

I pinned an item to the start menu in windows xp and somehow the link information in the properties dialog is missing and I can't delete the item to replace it with a new link.
It a brand new computer, with a fresh INSTALL of xp, office 2003, and wonderware software. It was only CONNECTED to the internet to download os updates.
Anyone have any ideas for how to get rid of it? If I can't get rid of it, I'll have to reinstall, as it is going to an end user...
Don't you see 'remove from this list' when you right click the item?

Well, that is the obvious solution, but I've tried that.... several times. Even tried rebooting and trying it again to no avail.
Anyone know where the registry entries are for pinned start menu items? Is the TASKBAR unlocked ? ?Yes, it is the obvious solution but you didn't mention it.

And you still didn't answer the question.

Solve : Need help with a mic.?

Answer»

Hey!

Long story short, I reformatted my computer sound didn't work(sound card was like 10 YEARS old.) So I bought a new sound card and I got my sound working just now, but my microphone doesn't work. Any ideas?Have you verified mic is not muted? When you installed the new sound card, did the driver/software you installed put a custom icon in your system tray for sound controls? If so, double click on it to open it and search for a setting to "Boost microphone" or something similar. Solve : help... I can't start up my computer?

Answer»

This, most likely means, that all that stuff is prevented from starting. I have no IDEA how to un-do it. UNLESS someone here is familiar with Norton SystemWorks, you may need to contact Symantec.Well, Those all appear to be programs that start at boot-up- interesting how norton let you "shut off" csrss.exe, which is even more important then explorer. You also disabled all your services (svchost.exe) as well as winlogon, wuauclt, and lsass.

This just furthers my personal dislike of norton. They'll KEEP you from "turning off" (again, whatever they mean by that...) but oh, no it's alright to DISABLE all these other critical processes...

I don't know if this would work, but see if you can bring up the task list. logon as normal, and then go nuts on ctrl-Alt-delete. the computer might CATCH it at a critical moment right when it finishes logging on (and thus realizes it has nothing to do but log off). Then you'll be able to use the new Task option to start explorer, and thus get norton up again the revert your changes.

In the future, though, it is best not to trust the dumb logic of the computer for stuff like this. You need to boot to the Recovery Console and use the "Enable" command to turn services back on...
You will need an XP CD for this and it needs to match the version you have installed.
For example if you're running XP Pro w/SP2 installed the CD needs to be an XP Pro w/SP2.

To me it still sounds like the monitor is on its way out. Or maybe the power cable or the power strip the monitor is plugged into.

Just my opinion.
it might just be a frame rate problem my monitor does the same thing screen goes few like 2-5 seconds later it comes back up....... possibly the graphics card or motho board capacitors getting old my motho board capacitors are bulging and my screen only started doing that since they started to bulge. so

1. could just be refresh rate readjusting
2. graphics card dieing
3. MOTHERBOARD problemsTry removing the video card from Device Manager / REBOOT. Windows will see the card and REINSTALL the drivers. Make sure you have the video drivers on CD 1st before you remove them.

Alan <>< Hi, thanks for the many suggestions. My friend is bringing his extra monitor, and let me try out for a longer period this time. Previously, I tried out for about an hour and it was OK. Now I have to ascertain which is at fault - monitor or CPU.

Anyway, Wednesday night, I ran defragmenter and went to sleep. In the morning, moving the mouse and hitting the keyboard could not kick up the screen. The power light was on but not the flicker. Re-booted and it started normal. Can this means the problem is in the GRAPHIC card? or may be the mother board?

Answer»

Hello well here is my problem: A long time ago I encrypted a file, one really important for me, and about 3 weeks I formated my COMPUTER and reinstalled Windows XP. Now this encrypted file is refusing me its access like if it was not recognizing me as his owner. It thinks my ANCIENT computer (before I reinstalled Windows) is the only one that can access it. So if anyone can HELP me I would be really greatful, it is an important file for me.

PS: My hardware is in NTFS and the file is a .doc oneTry Here
However if you encrypted it properly nothing short of the correct password is going to help i'm afraid...It is not even asking me for a password, I did the things from the link you gave me and I still have this stupid access denied Which software did you use to encrypt the file? if you used an encryption program to encrypt it & formatted the HD, you'll need to reinstall the encryption program. You probably didn't do this on the original computer, but did you make any recovery agents for your encrypting file system? It doesn't recognize you as the owner because technically you aren't the owner. Every time you create an account a new SID is generated. Windows USES this SID as well as the SID of all designated recovery agents when Encrypting and decrypting data from Encrypted files.

Sadly, there is no way (that I know of) to recover the data in the file if you have neither the original SID of the CREATORS account or a designated recovery agents SID.

In Short, it isn't the old computer it is looking for, rather it is the old account information.

Solve : A virus disables regedit.exe and system restore and most .exe files. HELP!?

Answer»

I tried to INSTALL Acrobat Reader but it gave me an error message saying "Corrupted Checksum" or "Invalid Checksum", something like that. From that point the way I used to log in to computer changed automatically. I used the xp welcome screen to allow users to click on their usernames to log in, but it changed to the conventional login interface in which each user has to type his/her username to login. Moreover, the the colour of BACKGROUND when login form appears is black when it should have been blue by default.

As a solution to this problem, I tried to delete all the keys related to Acrobat Reader but regedit did not run (although I am the system administrator of my PC). Then I tried to restore my PC to an earlier date. System restore didn't OPEN as well.

As the last try, I formatted my C drive and reinstalled windows xp. It worked fine. But again I tried to install Acrobat Reader and it gave the same checksum error and everything that I've mentioned above repeated. However, I reformatted harddrive once more and tried to install Acrobat Reader again and then again I faced the same problem. Now I am not going to do anything prior to having some knowledge about what's actually going on in my PC.

I don't know what to do now. Someone please help.

Thanks.Did you redownload Acrobat Reader between install or did you reinstall from the same file each time?
Do you have up to date antispyware/antivirus software installed?
well, go to filehippo.com, download the adobe acrobat reader (latest VERSION your computer can handle) and then SAVE IT TO SOMEWHERE ELSE (like a flash drive, not on your harddrive)

Then run the program directly from the new location. Does it work now?Forget about that behemoth, Adobe Reader. Get FoxIt: http://filehippo.com/download_foxit/. It's much smaller, faster, and does very same thing.or another other pdf reader. There are other ones too that read pdf files just ok.Sounds like a case of "if it hurts, don't do it".

But seriously, if it gives you a checksum error there must be something wrong with the
installer. probably screwed up and changed the associated of executables.go to filehippo.com and download the file. I have been doing that for a long time and no problem so far. It is always updated with latest versions of the software(s) that MANY people use as well as all previous versions if you like to use older versions.

Solve : Registry Cleanning HELP?

Answer»

I am running win xp pro and I want to know of a WAY to cleane my registry.

I think there is a free program called C C Cleanner but I am not sure.

Is there a free registry cleanner out there?
And how do they go through the registry and know what files are not being used and take themout?
thanksCCleaner is freeware and very safe. There's a cleaner that removes files that are not needed and registry entries that are not required.

I don't know how they go through the registry and search for unnecessary entries. Data files - maybe. It's a huge myth out there that a BLOATED registry will cause performance issues...but if you want it cleaned out i would recommend CCleaner above the REST...Download: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "SLIM" version.
Instructions: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleanerregcleaner is another good freeware registry cleaner/

Registry cleaners just identify registry entries that point to nowhere (broken file paths, software NONEXISTENT on host computer)

Download regcleaner here: www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm -

It's like you having to have the garbage man empty out your garbage every week, if he weren't there, it would all pile up wouldn't it?

(not to say some people are not affected by the fact that it does pile up....)

Solve : Ican't even run the original XP install CD to GET to recovery console!!! HELP!!?

Answer»

My XP machine was installing downloaded upgrades before shutdown and the power failed. Now when it starts it only goes as far as the Microsoft screen with the moving bar at the bottom, then reboots all over again, and again, and again...

I popped in the original XP CD to try to recover and it only goes as far as the "Press R to recover" screen, then it reboots too! I have never seen anything like it! I admit I'm not Bill Gates, but I'm not computer dumb. This has me baffled! Any help would be great.Taking a couple of guesses here, Mountainman, if you live in a remote rural area, could be when the power went, maybe there was a surge in the AC that maybe damaged hardware components on the motherboard, or the RAM? Not wanting to be gloomy but fried RAM can cause this TYPE of thing. If you have 2 or more sticks try running with each one on its own (Remove and replace with the power OFF!!! -- AC plug removed from wall!!!) which might ISOLATE any faulty module(s)

Unplug the power.
Toggle the on/off switch on the rear of the PSU a few times.
Plug it back in and SEE if it works now.
You may also want to replace the surge protector power strip.::)Thanks for the info guys. It had something to do with the old UPS with dead batts. I'm sure. I bought a new on AND a new hard drive so I can start from scratch. I changed the jumper to slave and got the old one mounted on my Linux box, and it likes it, so at least I can get my stuff off of it. It won't let a WIN2000 server box boot as a THIRD drive though! I'll let you know if I get it fixed -- or shoot it, whichever comes first.

Thanks!

Solve : File Conversion?

Answer»

Hello,
I would like to hear from anyone who can recommand me a SOFTWARE that is capable of converting TPI format to that of JPG or BMP.
I am using Win98SE, just for your information.I can only find this info about TPI files: http://filext.com/file-extension/tpi, and it doesn't say MUCH. Where are those files from? As a matter of fact, I don't really care what TPI file extension is all about; all I need is to convert it to some other type of image formats, such as jpg or bmp, so that I will be able to view it. I tried some image viewers, but somehoww, the TPI image wwas not visible, that is why I wwant to convert tit to other format!Well, then you're probably smarter, then me, because I have no clue what TPI file is (if it's even a graphic file), that's why I asked where that file came from.
Good luck!It appears that a .TPI file could be what's available to subscribers in Hungary on the national DIGITAL T-Online television service. As such I doubt if a format converter is available, what is needed is a set-top decoder.

Speculation on my part is that any advice given on this subject could be in breach of several copyrights.

Perhaps I'm wrong - again!

You went a long way around the globe, Dusty Yep, fancied a BIT of international travel, probably went a long way and the wrong way!!

The first hit on your search of filext.com came up with 'tonline' and Google came back with this.

To my tired brain it seems feasible tho' might not be too accurate..

Solve : Need help setting up a microphone?

Answer»

Hey!

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum to post in, I just found this SITE 10 minutes ago.

Anyway, I NEED some help with a microphone problem. I recently reformatted my computer(due to a Trojan, never click fishy links, kids.) Anyhow, my microphone doesn't work anymore, i tried several other microphones and neither worked, so I'm assuming it must be my computer. It worked just FINE before I reformatted.

Also, when I go to volume control, under balance it's faded out.

Thanks

PS try not to be too confusing I'm not very good with COMPUTERS. I am totally new here, but I also have had the same problem. If it's XP, try going into the control panel -> sounds, speech, and audio devices -> sounds and audio devices -> go to the voice tab, and hit test hardware. Usually works for me.Hmm, I got the following error when i tried to do that:

Your sound hardware cannot play sounds

Under the voice recording in the voice tab ''Advanced'' is faded out if that means anything. Could it be like you have to config and setup the microphone? If so, where could that be.Re-install your MBoard/sound drivers...they are WIPED out on a reformat.

other problem i have with vista is. i have set up my screen SAVER, checked for it to come on after 10 minutes of inactivity and all that other stuff. but my screen saver never comes on. i have left my lap top on overnight and when i went to look at it. it still SHOWED my desktop. screensaver never comes on. what gives?Yes, you can reformat and install XP. However you must have drivers for the hardware for XP. Right now you have drivers for Vista, not XP. Go the the manufacturers site and see if any are available before you reformat and reinstall.

Solve : windows updates causing problems?

Answer»

I have been experiencing problems with my computer not BOOTING up recently. I'm running windows xp home edition and have had a number of occasions where on switching on my computer it will start loading up to the point where windows is about to start, at this point there will be a BLUE flash on the monitor and it will start all over again loading up it then pauses at a black screen with a countdown timer and options to choose start in safe mode etc. I have found that if I start in safe mode and then use system RESTORE to go back to a point just before the scheduled windows up DATES where installed the computer will work fine again. Seems that something connected with the updates is causing the problem I have now turned off automatic updates to confirm that this is the problem and have had no more problems and the computer runs fine but now I am concerned that my computer is being left wide open to THREATS without the latest updates. HEEEEEEEEEEELP Try to install one update at a time, until you find the culprit. So long as you do your backup before applying any updates, your computer will be well-protected.

Solve : No fast User Switching?

I want to be able to use fast User Switching, and be able to use the Welcome Screen, for various reasons. In order to do so, I have to uninstall Client services for NetWare.
Network Connections> Local Area Connections> Properties> Client Services for NetWare- Uninstall
How will this affect this computer, and will it affect my network? Things are running pretty well here, it has taken a lot of work, and I don't want to do anything to mess that up. It's a Window XP SP2 and the second PC is as well.
Sorry if this should be in the Networking section, but I thought since its primarelly about being able to use Fast User Switching, and changing the Welcome screen, I decided to put it here. So, you have a network consisting of only two computers? Why do you think you need Client services for NetWare?

Solve : Re-installed XP difficulty transferring files?

Hello everyone hop eyou can help.

I just re-installed Windows XP Home and I am in the process of copying over all of my documents (music, images etc....) I FIND that if I try copying the files from the DVD+R back onto my hard drive some of the files or the process freezes (not responding) up my pc. I have been able to transfer some of the files but not all.

Any idea what is causing this? How are you trying to copy them ? ?
What file system are you USING ...FAT32 or NTFS ? ?
Files or folders more than 4G in size will not co-operate...try doing smaller chunks.my HD is NTFS

I have tried transferring them in smaller chunks as small 20 MB. some of the files work and some freeze XP upQuote

How are you trying to copy them ? ?

Post some specifics on the machine in question...Out of curiosity, why did you reinstall? If you were getting errors before you might have a hardware problem which is still present. A failing hard drive would exhibit the behavior your describe while trying to transfer files to it.

Solve : Something weird happened?

Answer»

Hopefully, someone can HELP solve this problem. OS is WinXP Pro. I was working on a new office computer. The computer had only one icon on the LOGON screen; the administrator icon was not present. Let's call the one icon that was visible, 123. This user had administrator rights and no password. I wanted to set up additional user accounts with passwords and no administrator rights. I logged on with 123, went to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. I then set user account abc, def, and ghi. All of these user accounts were assigned passwords and did not have administrator rights. Because the boss had told me that he did not WANT anyone else to use the computer, I then went to 123's page, member of tab, where I found that it was a member of Administrators. I highlighted this and clicked Remove. I expected 123 to lose administrator privileges but failed to assign the account to user status. When I rebooted, 123 icon was no longer visible, although abc, def, and ghi were along with the Administrator icon. I then went to set the Administrator password, intending to give this to my boss who would then change it. When I tried to set a password, Administrator ASKED for a password instead. I appears that a password is somehow installed for the Administrator account, although the boss says a password was not set for the machine at all on any account.

What happened? How could the Administrator account ask for a password it none were ever installed? Something is screwy here and I am having a difficult time convincing anyone that I did not set a password for the administrator account. Yes, it is true that I tried to set a password, as I was supposed to, but could not because Administrator wanted a password. It now appears that I am trying to lock out my boss. Nothing could be further from the truth. I did not give myself administrator privileges (ghi account is mine) and told the boss how to use control passwords2.

Can anyone solve this for me? I would be most appreciative.

William GardenhireHave you tried a blank password? I think you will be prompted for a password even if there isn't one set when you change the Administrator password. If it is blank, just leave it that WAY.

Solve : Power Supply Failure??

Hello everyone,
RECENTLY, I had terrible experience with my system (OS Win98SE):
In the middle of the use, the computer restarted itself; sometimes, it SHUT itself down all of a sudden (I am not sure if it shut down or the power supply was cut!) After it was "shut down" without warning, I tried to start it up again, but no response from the machine( no LED light(s) or sound; it was dead() until I unplugged the power from the wall outlet, waited for about 30 secs, and started it again.
If any one of you have any IDEA, please don't hesitate to advise me.I guess the problem might lies with the power cord. PERHAPS you might want to change to another power cord to try.

Now, my computer was working completely fine until today, and it all started when I put my memory stick (which I had lent to a friend over the weekend..... hmm...) into my PC, and tried to access it. What came up was quite interesting. The computer was asking me what to open my E:\ drive (mem. stick drive) with (some options included Internet Explorer, Paint, Photoshop, Windows MEDIA Player.... it was quite a large list, actually)!

Anyway, to access my E:\ drive, I just used CMD to open it, and then I could move some files. Once I was done, I was opening my C:\ to delete a program which had been bugging me (Messenger Discovery Live, which I'll address in another post once this is resolved), when the Search menu popped up.

Which leads me to here. So, any ideas, folks?

CONDENSED VERSIONPc. Version: Windows XP, SP2
Problem: Search menu pops up whenever I try to open any drive/folder
When did this start: Today, after using my flash drive
Recent programs: Messenger Discovery Live (which I had unistalled, then reinstalled, but still won't GO away...)Start > RUN > Regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "NONE" (without ")

If this problem is seen for FOLDERS:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ") Or open a command prompt and type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and hit Enter...Thanks patio, it worked You're more than Welcome...
How's the Clan ?Lol.... I may have the same name as Calum's clan, but that doesn't mean I know anything about it

Anyway, again, thanks.Ahaaa...that's where i got cornfused.

Solve : Help Vista Problems(Explorer and beeps)?

Answer»

Hay! I have some problems with vista. They are:
1) I have two os Windows XP Pro, Vista ULTIMATE. When I chose vista from boot menu the vista loading takes some time. Then when I log in on any USER the "Welcome" screen comes and the loading circle goes on and on and the working red light on the mini tower does not glow, this process of loading goes on for about five min. then the vista is loaded.
2) then when the vista is loaded My DOCUMENTS folder is opened. And the explorer.exe is not loaded. Then I have to open Explorer manually with the Task Manager.
3) last prob is that when I am using vista a sound keeps coming. Like the sound of something shutting down and then after five min it the sound of something starting comes. This keeps happening again and again.
Can anyone help? If u don't understand any part plz ask. And one last thing all these things don't happen in XPHas Vista ever run well on your computer? Did this problem happen suddenly or gradually?

Solve : E mail outlook exspress help?

Answer»

I have win xp rpo and DSL....and I use Outlook Exspress.

I am trying to e mail an MPEG-2 file to someone and it is 67 MB

I type my Messege and Attache the file and when I click send outlook LOCKSUP.

or the SEND TAB will not depress.

Am I doing this RIGHT or is there a limit to File size with Outlook Exspress.
Thanks RobertNot that I'm aware of, but most email services have a size limit on how large attachments you can send/receive (typically no more than 20 mb and often quite less than that).
This shouldn't limit shouldn't make Outlook freeze but will probably STOP you from SENDING the mail even if Outlook didn't freeze.

I know this won't fix your Outlook problem but I would suggest you use alternate means of delivering the file.
Upload it to a file hosting site like rapidshare (or any number of similar SITES), then email a download link for the file INSTEAD of the file itself. This way you won't risk the email not being delivered because the attachment is too big.

Solve : Windows XP Pro, Media Player , clear out songs?

Answer»

is there any way to delete all the music STORED in media player, We have a lot of songs stored in my documents, with an inadvertent click, now all the songs are also stored in media library, and the only way i can find to delete them are one by one, and this will take forever(Beleive me) I would like to delete them all at once, but i cant find out how to do it, have tried several ways, and looked several places, is it POSSIBLE???WMP library is MERELY a LIST of files, not files themselves.
Create new library, delete the old one.
