Solve : several small specific problems?

Answer»

my computer stats
ACPI multiprocessor PC
windows xp service pack 3
2 300 gb sata hard drives in Raid 0 as well as a 40 gb ide DRIVE that is my primary
2 intel xeon processors running at 2.4 GHZ(hypertreaded),
2 gb of Rambus type RAM,
geforce 7600 graphics card,
D-link airplus DWL-G520 Wireless card,
creative sound-blaster PCI 512
3 different dvd rom drives a lite-on, a Toshiba, and a TSSTcorp

1. this is an old system but SEEMS to be fairly capable once up and running, however I seem to be unable to run certain programs without enormous lag....programs that I have run on inferior machines without trouble, specifically, GOOGLE earth, and google skethup.

2. I have also been unable to find the quick-boot option under the BIOS.

3. For some reason when running facebook applications one of the 4 graphs in my task manager suddenly spikes to nearly 100%.....erratically. the other 3 seem to stay around 20%. only when running the facebook apps, otherwise I average about 3% on all bars.

4. I seem to be slowly losing wireless signal strength(it has steadily decreased over the past few months) do you think this is a problem with the router or my card?

hope someone out there with a little more experience than I can help me sort out these problems. oh and I defrag regularly(once a week) and DELETE off unused programs as well(once a month). As you say, this is an old machine. The RAM (Rambus!) and memory controller must be pretty old-skool by today's standards. Google Earth in particular is a cpu power and resources hog.

PSU & RAM ?

OK.

But there is no O/S installed, the HD is formated and only way to comunicate is vis DOS., which I am not
so familiar with the it.

Very little knowlwdge of DOS.

So , once I am prompted: C:>

What shoud I type(Command)

To format a drive via DOS/Prompt, Type Format.com and then Type The drive letter (EG.. C:\) then you should put in FAT32.

Atleast that's how I think you do it. If you NEED help, you can also Try Format.com /?

Because I am not quite sure, just giving you some heads up info.
I am happy to assist you! People should only post if they actually KNOW what they are talking about.

Solve : Yessayi?

Hi! I'm Yessayi. I'm 8 years old. I have an old comp Pentium 2. It works so badly. If it's possible help me giving me a comp ( let it be an used one).My e-mail is *Blocked Russian URL*. God BLESS you!

EMail addy removed

So you want us to buy you a PC ? ?
How much should we spend on this? ?You have to be 13 to join CH, don't you? I should have thought that a thread inviting people to email a *Blocked Russian URL* address was almost certainly a scam, and should really have been removed.

This character has now sent me a PM (welcome to my block list). I didn't think that begging is the kind of "asking for help" that CH was meant for? Does the OP seriously imagine that anybody is going to send a used PC or parts to Russia? Especially since posting an email address is forbidden, so we would never know where to send it. I wonder if his parents know what he is doing. If he is under 13 he shouldn't be here anyway.

However. I don't know why my rushian e-mail address blocked , my new e-mail is [emailprotected] I can work with my comp, but it's a hardest THING. Thank you!You are not allowed to post your email address here. It is forbidden by the forum rules. It will be deleted. Nobody is going to send you a computer. Also you are too young to be here. Nice poll. I believe you!Wait! Don't beg for a computer, build one yourself! It's easy! and you can do it on the cheap!

edit... woops, wrong link. for the some reason the entire site never SHOWS a different url in the addressbar so I copied the wrong one...

Solve : Error messages?

Answer»

When trying to download and install some updates, internet explorer 8 and flash player get the following message

Internet explorer cannot download ie8-windowsxp-x86-env.exe from download microsoft.com was unable to open this site

C:/documents and settings\ed favorites access denied
pops up whenever you change sites online

is there anyway to fix this????hmmm,
The hard and fast way i find of sorting this ISSUE is to FO into control panel, add and remove programs, uninstall IE8 'thus rolling it back to 7 or 6' and then reinstalling 8 from the microsoft IE8 website.

This is not my preffered method of solving these issues as you don't get to the root cause, but if time is an issue then it generally sorts out the problem.Let's not uninstall anything just yet. Did the problem just start? If so, what is new since the last time it worked properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? The message occurs when i am trying to download. want to upgrade to 8, now using 6

The other messages COMES up when i log on to the internet : C:\documents and settings\ed\favorites is not accessible
access denied

Thanks for any help you can offerThen by all means, upgrade to IE 8 and let's see what happens. Download the installable version on another system then copy it to yours and install it.Tried that -- downloaded onto flash drive and then installed it---- during the EXTRACTING of files this error message appeared:

iesetup.exe - Entry Point not found
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValuew could not be located in the DYNAMIC link library SHLWAPI.dll.I'm on my way out right now, but see if anything here helps: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/26873

Jackal, you may have a recovery partition which will allow you to reinstall your operating system to its ex-factory settings but before doing that you need to backup all your critical data files, perhaps by installing your laptop hard disk in another system. More info please on your laptop setup, model etc..

When your system first boots tap the F8 key several times until you get to the boot option screen. Choose COMMAND PROMPT or SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT and do the following:

i cant boot it with command promptUsing working computer....

Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

  • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
  • Reboot bad computer, using the boot CD you just created.
    • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.

If the above works fine, and you reached REATOGO-X-PE desktop, proceed with the following...

We'll have to replace the registry hives with a set of those present in the C:\System Volume Information folder, (if Restore Points are available).

Be very careful with following next set of steps:

We need to create a batch file and save it into a flash drive to move information from the sick computer to a working computer. This batch is to list all directories in C:\system volume information, which is useful for finding the backed up registry!.

Important note: Ensure that you Save it on the flash drive. Do NOT save this file on the working computer. You can accidentally run the file in the computer and damage its registry. This file will be ran in the non working computer after following the next set of instructions.

Using your clean working computer do the following:

1. GO to Start -> Run, and type notepad into the box.
2. Click OK.
3. Copy and paste the following code into Notepad:

Code: [Select]Ren C:\windows\system32\config\system system.123
Dir "C:\System Volume Information" /s >C:\log.txt
Ren C:\windows\system32\config\system.123 system
Del %0

4. Go to File -> Saveas then enter: ren.bat (save it as all files (*.*))
5. Then.. Save it on the flash drive. Do NOT save this file on the working computer.
6. After that insert the flash drive into bad computer before booting the system.
7. Once booted with OTLPE CD, go to Start My Computer then go to your flash drive and copy the batch file to the desktop then double click it to run it.
8. Then go to C:\log.txt copy and paste it back here as a reply to this post.

Note: You may have to copy and paste the log into the flash drive so you can post it back here.

Solve : External Drives Not Recognized?

Answer»

Hello:

I have a pc with two external drives: D: CD & E: DVD. Both are recognized and have updated drivers. Both have POWER. Ribbon CABLES are secure. However, I cannot read or write to either drive.

Your thoughts are appreciated.
ScottHow do they show up in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management...
Right clik each drive and select Properties...

PS do they have power adapters ?
So your D drive is a CD drive and your E drive is a DVD drive. Is that right?

You say that both of these drives are external but then you mention ribbon cables. Are you sure that they're not internal drives? If they are internal, have you checked your jumper settings?

Solve : Dell Dimension 2400 Winxp reinstall?

Answer»

I did reinstall Win Xp many time without any problem in the past, but this time something is totally wrong.

It usually takes aprox. 1 HOUR to reinstall but this time it took 5 hours and in the end:
"13 minutes to finish install"
and it frozen and nothing happen after that, I try 5 times with same result.

Now I got used formated HD, the Computer repairman told me that this is as good as new.
However, I got same result.

I was PROMPTED:
"Setup can not copy the file wmitimep.del "
ALSO
"INF install failure.
Reason: the parameter is incorrect"
then
13 minutes to finish install.
and froze.

Then I chaged RAM, but no improvement.

I am quite sure Dell Win Xp Cd is in great shape.

I think its VIRUS, or cracker might have changed or left malware in My computer.

What could be the reason that causes this problem, and what can I do to solve this?Clean the CD.
Try swapping in a known good CD drive.Hi,

Try completely formatting your Hard Drive and reinstall the operating system. If this does not work then try to replace the CD ROM, as you have mentioned the system was unable to copy "wmitimep.del" file. Seems the CD ROM you are tring to install from has some scratches.

Hope this works.

Solve : computer power?

Answer»

I blew my Compac Pressario out with compressed air and when plugged in to power source the front switch light doesn't light. The small green light at the back of CPU flashes on and off. Computer won't even turn on now. thanksI'm guessing you inadvertently LOOSENED something. I'd check to make sure all boards are properly seated and all connections are secure. If that's not it, you may WANT to try a different power supply. The front HEADER wires that run the power and LED's on the front of the case are pretty fragile...you probably blew 1 or more of them off.
Consult your MBoard manual for the correct plug locations.I checked the connections that I could, still nothing. There is a soft clicking sound as the light on back flashes, is there a circuit breaker or fuse in the power supply box? That sounds like a failing hard drive to me...Quote from: patio on June 20, 2010, 09:37:45 AM

Yep. Clicking sounds are generally from a dying hd.The clicking is coming from the power supply box. Borrow one of the same or greater wattage from a friend and swap it in there then...

Solve : Got Formatted!?

Answer»

Hello,

After years of seeing the empty "tick Box" on disabling start up items, I decided to "tick" it and my whole WinXP software disappeared!

The computer would not boot back to Windows so I had to re-install windows from the CD.

I found the old Windows folder on the drive, and though many of my old FILES were in there, it said they were empty.

I re-installed Windows into the old Windows folder thinking it would be "damage limitation".

The new location of Windows (C:Windows/Windows!) causes a lot of problems; Example, the printer will not work, and many updates will not install.

Is there a way I can get uninstall the new WinXP and back the Old WinXP?

Thanks

basix10I really, REALLY don't understand what you did. Are you saying you've now reinstalled Windows twice - once to a new folder and once to the original Windows folder? If so, what options do you have at boot?

ALSO, WHAT box did you check where (disable startup items)? And why, for heavens sake, did you then decide to reinstall Windows rather than stop RIGHT there and come here to tell us about your situation. You certainly did not need to do a reinstall of the OS.Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I did this a few months ago. My daughter moved into a new house and I was connecting her computer up which was overloaded with redundant software and had not been used for about two years. I did a search and was told that removing items from the start up menu from (msconfig) would speed the computer up) It was there I saw the empty box (had no software assigned to it!) which I had noticed since Win98, so I checked it. If I remember correctly, the computer went dead at that POINT, and would not reboot.

I installed WinXP into the old Windows (XP) folder.

It is now time to sort this mess out if possible, preferably by getting the old system back, or having to do a total new install onto C:

Thanks again for replying1) All you had to do was boot to safe mode and rerun msconfig and uncheck the box. For future reference, msconfig should be used exclusively as a diagnostic tool, not to manage startup items.

2) Okay, so you have only one Windows installation and it is the original folder, is that what you are now saying? If not, please clarify.

3) Did you format before reinstalling?

4) Does the system boot directly to Windows or does it offer options at boot?1: Thank you advice noted.

2: Yes!

3: Yes gave no other option as all other avenues were non negotiable according to the installation CD)

4: Boots directly to the "new" WinXP which is in the "old" WinXP folder...

ThanksIf you formatted before installing there is nothing to get back. FORMATTING erases the hard drive by definition. If there was valuable data you must get back there are utilities you can try to retrieve the data and companies that specialize in retrieving formatted data (both can be expensive). If you want to go either of those routes, DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ELSE TO THE DRIVE.

Start here and good luck: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=Recover+data+from+formatted+drive&aq=f&aqi=g7g-m2&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Thanks for your help, it really is sincerely appreciated.

Solve : Restarting by itself??

My computer is restarting by itself. I ran a virus scan and no viruses were detected. I also tried removing as much dust as possible from the fans. I also ran a system restore but the computer keeps restarting, is there anything else I can do?What led up to this? Did you make any hardware or software changes to your computer lately? Not that I know of. We've just been using it like normal, nothing new has been installed. I also removed the setting where if the system fails, it won't restart but it doesn't take me to the blue screen.i was having that problem too! i did a little research and i came across this PROGRAM and it got rid of it restarting! i think you should try it to and if it works pass it on to all your friends!

[recovering disk space - old attachment DELETED by admin]Go to system properties - advanced - startup and recovery settings and uncheck "automatically restart". Next time, instead of a reboot you should see a blue screen error message. Post the entire contents of that message here.I've already UNCHECKED it, but I don't get a blue screen. The computer just works like it normally does, and then it'll restart. Then it's almost certainly a hardware problem Run diagnostics on all hardware starting with RAM.It may be due to overheating.

Solve : Formatting my Windows XP but do not have a installation CD?

Answer»

I have been having problems with my Windows XP computer. The browsers close immediately, i can't connect printers, its just really bad. So I wanted to FORMAT my hard drive and start from scratch. But I remember pretty well that my computer did not come with a installation cd. Would I be able to format the hard drive and use my computer from scratch without the cd?And what will you use to install Windows?I don't know. Does that mean I can't format my cd and successfully use windows? That's what Im asking. No, we knew format your computer it does not automatically installed the operating system for Windows XP.
If you wish to reinstall Windows XP on your computer you MUST have some kind of installation media. This is quite often a CD made by Microsoft and you put it into your CD drive and boot the system from the CD.
Also, many manufacturers have what is called OEM installation CDs that will also install a FRESH copy of XP on the brand-name machine.
What is the make and model number of your computer? Where did you buy the computer? There should have been some DOCUMENTATION with the computer that explains how to restore the system.
Is this a laptop or a desktop PC?

In order to install an OS you need a Windows disc. Once you have that you can format the drive and install Windows.Grrr. I knew distinctly that it did not come with any type of installation cd. Windows was already installed on the computer. So i have to buy a brand new installation cd? Its a desktop by the way. I bought it in 2005 I believe. And it is a dell computer. Im away from it now so im not sure the make and model of it. It is a intel pentium 4You can order a CD from Dell for a fraction of the cost of a Retail CD.

Look for the serial number and service tag on the computer. Then go to the Dell site bad follow the instructions.
www.Dell.com

If you can't find it, come back here and
we can help you find a legitimate Dell XP CD.There MAY be a recovery partition on the system that will allow you to restore the system to the day you received it.OK! Thank you Geek9 and Allan. You both have been extremely helpful. I'll try both options and let you know what happens next.

Solve : Windows XP Home SP2 - Windows doesn't load?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I've got a computer with Windows XP Home SP2 on it, I think it's a P4 processor, with 100GB HDD, 1.5GB RAM and a low spec nVidea graphics card (no EMBEDDED graphics).

Right the problem is:

The computer intermittenly won't load Windows. By this I mean it goes through POST, and to the point where Windows loads (that splash screen with the bar at the bottom), but after a SHORT while the picture goes BLACK, as it would when the next thing you would see is the "Welcome" splash screen, and it just stays black.

It won't even load to safe mode now.

It's kind of odd as I had it working and re-booted it 6-7 times to check it was ok, but now nothing.

It'll boot to liveCD's just fine, so I'm assuming the error is within the Windows loading processes or the HDD?

Anyway, here's what I've done so far:

I got it booted fine once, so I put a Windows Home CD in and ran sfc /scannow.

Then I went through re-booting it lots to make sure the once wasn't a fluke.

I took it back to my friend, plugged it back in, and it booted fine. Then I edited some stuff in MSCONFIG, and now it won't boot again.

When I edited the stuff with MSCONFIG I double checked all the processes I was stopping, so I highly doubt that this is the cause, but I could be wrong...

Oh, after this I went through trying to repair install via the Windows CD, but it froze in the recovery console, so I hard re-booted, and got no joy after that.

I also tried a few liveCDs like Ubuntu and The Ultimate Boot Disk.

One thing I did notice is it was quite warm to the touch inside the case, that being both the graphics card, and the HDD.

So like I said, I think the issue is within the loading process of Windows, or the HDD it's self.

Any ideas? Can an HDD overheat, and then be only "quite warm" to the touch???

HELP guys!!!

Thanks,

Sid
When you say you "took it to a friends" and it booted fine are you saying you're swapping this XP drive from one machine to another ? ?
This may be the issue as XP is not designed for this.
You'll need to list what services you have disabled as well...Hey Sid,

Often this type of issue is associated with the HDD. Although it's a little different because usually it wont even get into Windows, however at this point I'm still leaning towards HDD. What could be happening is that the drive is failing or not "spinning" up fast ENOUGH to read the information from the hard drive causing it to not load.

You may want to see if your computer and the HDD supports S.M.A.R.T and if so that it's enabled. Often you can find this through the CMOS setup. If available and disabled, try enabling it, it should be able to detect this type of hard drive failure.

Otherwise I'd suggest trying to scandisk the HDD and see if it detects any issues.

The reason I come to this conclusion is because a software issue does not resolve itself by simply rebooting the computer. That type of issue is almost always caused by a failing hardware component.

Sorry, I meant the actual machine in it's entirety.

If I could get it to boot I'd happily list the services I stopped, but I made sure I double checked them all at : http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Also, I made sure I hid all the MS Services on the services tab first.I've just slaved their HDD into my machine, and under the Disk Management Console it comes up as "Healthy".

Because it's a different computer you may run into authentication issues because XP may think it's trying to be installed on multiple computers and think you're pirating XP.

In addition would probably run into conflicts with the hardware detection in Device Manager detecting all new hardware for your computer.Quote

I got it working with a repair install, and now they're happy, but if this has thrown up a big red flag, then I should probably fix it asap, so a point in the right direction would be nice.

Solve : I can't drag icons anywhere..?

Answer»

Okay, so I've searched for this problem everywhere. And I've seen other people have the same problem. But NOBODY tells how to fix it. For some strange reason, I can't DRAG icons or files on any window, be it desktop, my documents folder. On any window it won't let me drag anything. BUT, here's where it gets weirer. I created a new user account, and it lets me drag icons on that account. But, I can't figure out how to get my saved Windows Live Messenger accounts on that account, or I'd just move accounts. I want to figure out how to fix this. Does anyone at all know anything about how to fix it?Be more specific on these accounts...does the OLD account have Admin priveledges...the new one ? ?All my accounts are administrators. Then it's possiblt the offending account has gotten corrupted...
I had a link with instructions but cannot locate it ...best place to check is the MS Knowledge Base.So there's a way to fix it then?

Edit: I searched the MS Knowledge Base specifically for Windows XP SP2, and keywords about not being able to drag any files. And it didn't find anything to help.I maybe miss understanding you, but if its what I think you mean,

Go to and right click on empty spot of taskbar, properties, start menu, customize, Advanced, and make sure there is a check mark in "Enable draging & droping"
I was waiting on SOMEONE to bring that up. That is the first thing I checked. It's enabled. The "Auto Arrange" is disabled. Every normal little thing it as it should be. This had HAPPENED to other people.. but they never say how to fix it. Or if they fixed it.Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it...
Let it finish and re-boot.

If this doesn't work See Here...I tried that. It didn't even ask for the CD. Just closed when it was done. I tried a non destructive restore on my computer, and even that didn't work. Anything else I can try, besides just reinstalling windows?Sure...click the Link above...

Solve : Windows XPPRO, Reload?

Answer»

I tried reloading windows XP Pro on my COMPUTER. I got the following error messages. The version I have in the package is SP-1. The computer has SP-2 on it. I don't remember upgrading. Maybe it happend through auto upgrades over the 4 years SINCE I got the Computer. It's Dell XPS, With XP-Pro. Do I format the *censored* before reinstalling windows? Will the disk from dell do that automatically? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I already installed another hard disk and copied the files over so I can re copy them after completion. Is there somewhere I can get step by step instructions. I talked to the tech at dell online two different techs said they would call me back at a certain time and take me through the process. Both times I waited a whole night. No response. Any help would be appreciated. Yes, the XP version on your hdd has been upgraded by hotfixes etc so is now a later version than the ONE on your XP cd, this will prevent you doing an over-the-top re-install..

One cure is to slipstream your cd version with SP.2 and all updates/hotfixes since SP.2 was issued. Otherwise you can format/delete the existing installation and then revert to the install from your cd but then SP.2 and all subsequent updates will be downloaded to update again, a lot to download especially if you are on dial-up..

Ideally your XP cd should be the full install version but an upgrade version will be Ok if you still have the previous OS cd (e.g. Win.ME). Take care if you only have the Dell recovery disk.

Suggestion: As you have already installed a second (slave?) hard drive clone the original disk to it. This will give you an identical copy of your original disk so that if things go haywire when formatting/reinstalling the original you can simply boot from the new drive. Cloning software is probably free from your hdd manufacturer's site, otherwise cloning software is free from other websites.

There's a how-to for a clean install >>here<<

Good luckThanks, I do only have the dell recovery disk. Should I wait and buy a Windows XP PRO, disk?

How much RAM do you have to start with?

if you didn't have that much ram to begin with, then you should buy some more! Many people look at their free RAM figure, compare it to how much physical RAM is installed, and start to PANIC. They do not need to, usually, because by design Windows will take advantage of most of the RAM that is not actually being used by applications, for its own internal purposes. This memory is released at once if a program calls upon it. There is no point in "FREEING up" RAM for programs that you haven't loaded yet, and might not, if it slows down Windows and makes the programs that you are already running slower.

If you have 512M or better, 1GB, and you are not trying to do something RAM hungry like EDIT large images in Photoshop, I wouldn't worry.

Solve : Where could I find the assigned shorcut hotkeys I have assigned??

Answer»

Ok, here's the story. I had a few shortcuts on my desktop that I had assigned a HOTKEY to (in this case TWO of them, CTRL+ALT+W and CTRL+ALT+S) through the right-click properties menu. Those shortcuts were deleted, and the recycle bin was emptied, so they no longer exist. I tried to reassign those hotkeys to a different shortcut on my desktop, but it will not let me. I am ASSUMING it still has them registered somewhere to those shortcuts, even though they are now gone, but I am unable to unassign them as the shortcuts are gone. I ATTEMPTED to make a new shortcut with the same name so I could change the shortcut hotkeys, but they didn't SHOW up there. I needs help.Sorry, forgot to mention that I am using Windows XP Pro.

I am running windows xp/works and have a FILE created in open office(sxc) and cannot open it, any suggestions please, tried opening it in word and also notepad but no luck.thanks
stevesxc is the SPREADSHEET FORMAT in OO. So TRY opening it in Excel, this would be your safest bet for opening the file if Office supports the format at all.
If it can't then you could install OO to open it, OO is free after all.
Or use an online document viewer such as ZOHO. It supports sxc files.

Solve : Task Manager in XP and My Computer Overheating Problem?

Answer»

I'm very upset. My computer overheats to the point where it shuts itself off. It will be a while before I can get it to a technician, so I have to guess at some of the causes. One thing I'm guessing is that something is trying to execute and not being able to. Not knowing much about these things, I LOOK at the list of processes in the Task Manager, but the names are pretty much meaningless to me, so I'm asking SEVERAL questions:

Q1: How normal is it for CPU usage to jump around constantly from 2% to 8%, 16% 30something%, 65%, if all you are doing is looking at the Task Manager and not touching the keyboard or mouse, are not doing any scans, have only the Task Manager or the Task Manager and one Explorer window open?

Q2: According to a certain idiot technician I once talked to on the PHONE, any task listed in the Task Manager that has my name as the user name (that is, not System or Local/Network Service) is something I installed and since I installed it, I must know what it is. This was an extremely unhelpful remark, since if I knew what it was I wouldn't have been asking her what it was. I have tried searching the net for some of these processes, but not everything can be found. For instance, McciTrayApp.exe. I'm not even sure that's an "i" after the two c's. Maybe it's a lower case L, but I've tried it both ways and can't find a reference to it. How do I know it (or anything else listed) is something I want to keep, and if it's not, how would I get rid of it?

Q3: There are currently 60 Processes listed. If the only thing on the list with a sizable CPU number is System Idle Process, averaging 90, and nothing else flashing on and off has a number averaging 2, am I barking up the wrong tree guessing the OVERHEATING problem is being caused by something trying to execute and not succeding?

Please answer my questions in as simple and non-technical way that you can, I really don't know much about this subject, which brings me to the next q:

Q4: Does anyone have an opinion on this website, and do I need this service? The site says it's free for personal use.
http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/main.aspxOperating system and details of your computer required for diagnosis.

Are you sure overheating is the cause of the shutdowns? Shutdowns can be caused by faulty hardware. Are any error messages displayed?

Answer to Q1. Perfectly normal and depends on what is running in the background.

Answer to Q2. McciTrayApp.exe is >>here<<. Most of the processes are listed on the WWW and/or at >>this<< site.

Answer to Q3. 60 running processes seems a tad high, my processes number 35. It's normal for System Idle to show 90% usage. Overheating is usually caused by a hardware problem such as a fan not operating or operating at a lower than acceptable speed, a laptop sited on a carpet or other heat-raising medium, lack of or incorrect installation of thermal paste between a chip and heatsink.

Answer to Q4. You may get some benefit from a listing of 'what's running', you may find that a process is automatically started for hardware which you only use intermittently such as a camera. It depends on whether what the listing shows is understood by you or not.

Regardless of the above, in order to decide which processes are required you must give as much info as you can about your computer. Please read >>this<<.

Also on question 3:
Over heating can be also be caused by poor air flow in the case due to build up of dust. It is recommended that you blow your computer out once a year.

I haven't gotten an error message lately. In the past overheated shut-offs have yielded messages on re-booting. I'm guessing overheating because the computer is getting so hot, with excessive fan whirring sometimes starting when I first turn the computer on.

Answer to Q1. Perfectly normal and depends on what is running in the background.
If only I knew what was running in the background! Task manager doesn't seem to know! If it does know, it isn't telling me!

I changed the list of installed programs to "date last used". (Hanging my head in shame) No, I never deleted most of the trial versions that came with the computer - I'm doing that now.

Regardless of the above, in order to decide which processes are required you must give as much info as you can about your computer. Please read >>this<<.
I'll read it and let you know.

If your Tech uses a vaccuum i'd find a new Tech...Perhaps you could post a pic of your task Manager on the processes tab. Just make sure to fit as many on the screen as possible. Just Alt+PrintScreen, paste in paint, save, and attach the image. I've only GOT 28 processes running, but 60 is a bit suspicious.

Also when you say that "task manager doesn't seem to know" what processes are running in the background what do you mean? A bunch of the 60 processes has got to be background tasks...

Also, Take Patio's advice- any self-respecting Computer Tech knows not to use a Vacuum inside a computer. You'll have to ask somebody else about the reason because the best I can come up with is the magnetic fields in the motor and the possibility to suck out jumpers.Quote from: patio on February 24, 2008, 08:11:52 AM

Searched for similar problems, but didn't see my specific ISSUE. I've got a Dell Inspiron 6400 that's a few years old. I think my problem started with something I downloaded...started getting what I believe was a virus that would pop up from my task bar asking about using a tool to protect against viruses. A day later none of my programs will open, including internet explorer or my wireless connection. I downloaded spybot using another computer and transferred it to my computer via cd. My computer won't RUN/install the program, and asks for a program to use to open the file (none work). Computer starts and shuts down fine, but nothing works. Thoughts? Help? Thanks! I'd still recommend checking your computer against malwares.Usually when that Happens it is Malware that is the root cause. But I've found a way to open REGEDIT and change the appropriate keys, dodging a reinstall (of course, a reinstall would guarantee a malware free computer, but I have two computers, and the one connected to the NET doesn't have any valuable data (and can dual-boot anyway)).

Of course, the problem has been solved, but somebody might find this information at least interesting!

Unfortunately, it only works on Windows 2000 and higher. Oh well.

1. Open Task Manager (thankfully, Windows doesn't "ShellExecute()" the task manager, rather opening the process directly...).

2. Select "New Task" and enter Regedit.exe Regedit should appear.

3. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

(if any keys along the way don't exist, create them)

4. Change the (Default) value to "%1" %* (including quotes)

Executables will now open properly.

As a Note, I strongly dislike re-installing windows. Don't know why, I've only done it hundreds of times...

But especially so when you have no warranty, not even a wisp of a guarantee anything will work, and the strangest feeling you left a screw in there SOMEWHERE.....

I've learned to be careful with new stuff with this old computer. But I've had it so long, I've grown attached to it. Why, I feel almost as if I nursed it myself, from a slightly-more-useful-than-a-paper-weight with a 2GB HD and 32 MB of Ram and an ATI Rage Pro, to a more than USABLE (for me, anyway), 320GB HD 512 MB of Ram (I should reduce this to 256MB however, my chipset cannot cache more then 256MB, but some goof gave me over 50 128MB and 256MB SDRAM DIMM's, and I just HAD to max it out!) and a 256MB ATI Radeon 9250. I almost felt proud the first time the overheat siren went off! 80 degrees celsius! Even a NEW computer doesn't get that hot. Only happens in the summer THOUGH...)

In fact, now that I think about it, I COULD have simply bought a totally new computer for the price I bought all the upgrades...

I still regularly use a IBM Thinkpad 755CDV laptop, with 8MB of RAM, and a shot power supply, not to mention a teensy hard drive (1.5GB, always seem to have to erase something to add something...) running PC-DOS 2000 and Windows 3.1.

Is it posible ? Anyone done it ? What does the boot record of a CD-ROM/CD-R look likeIn order to boot from an USB PEN drive you need a BIOS that supports booting an USB DEVICE. If the BIOS supports booting from USB devices it should be listed as an option in the BIOS setup under the boot order config.
If it does support booting from USB devices here is a list of ways to create your bootable pen drive.

And Bart-PE on a pen drive is ALSO possible but, according to the developers, not very stable.

Yep M8 both WAYS.... I have tried running the chkntfs /x E: from the run box....

About to reboot and see what happens...

maxmix

PS Exact same in safemode Hmm strange. It's a long shot but what if you run "command" from the run line instead of "cmd"?Does the exact same thing.... Although running the chkdisk command line from the run box has solved my problem for now

... "chkdisk". You mean CHKDSK. Yeah, I see it can be run from the run box, but the PANEL immediately closes when the command has executed; doesn't give you a chance to see the results. At least, that's what happens on my system. Is yours working differently?Yes mine closed straight away also, you cannot pause it either to see the result....

But the error checking has stopped on boot up now.... So it must have been applied...

maxmixDLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. website.
They are more extensive than chkdsk and may let you know the true health of that drive...I will on Monday if I can.... Even although I have stopped the old scandisk kicking in.... When windows starts after logon etc ist box is telling me the drive is on the way out....

All backed up anyway.... Anyway to disable that popup error ?

Solve : Computer Won't Boot Properly?

I have an HP LAPTOP and when I press the power button the fan spins for about 1 second and the light indicating the power is on comes on, but then nothing HAPPENS. The harddrive light never comes on, and the screen remains black.
It worked fine yesterday and now this problem. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!!!
One thing you can try is to remove the battery and just run it off of AC power...does it do the same thing ? ?
It also may be shutting down to PROTECT itself if it's overheating...how OLD is the MACHINE ? ?thank you for the reply. unfortunately i tried that and it didn't work. thanks again though. And ? ?and it does the same thing. sorry, i should have put that in my last reply. What about the other questions ? ?

Solve : New xp install - no add hardware icon in CP?

Answer»

I'm doing a new Xp install and it isn't RECOGNIZING the CDROM. I went to the CP to 'add hardware' and that icon isn't there. Is there a command LINE for it to detect new hardware?

I reinstalled XP and it didn't put those things in.

Thanks.
Start/Run hdwwiz.cpl.......

Where did this version of XP come from ? ?

I bought it. Why would you ask that?Maybe because of the fact i've seen just about every version there is in my short time here.
If it offends you that i ask...... you shouldn't let it...
Did you try and run the command line suggested ? ?
You MAY also want to go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD HANDY as it will ask for it.
When done re-boot and see if the Control Panel applets are all there.

Solve : MBR, DLL, and NTLDR issues?

Answer»

ah, sorry, i'll clarify. i'm still on XP Home SP2, and i don't need to tap the F8 key repeatedly, just hit it once. but yes, that's how i'm attempting to enter Safe Mode. for further clarification, i have tried tapping repeatedly for various amounts of time (i tried to get into Safe Mode about 20x last night), and all produces the same results. i don't recall the exact text, but it was something very close to this:

Please select a boot device

my SATA drive
my other drive
CD ROM device

Press Enter to Select
Use Arrow Keys to Move up and down
Press Esc to boot from default

...and pressing Esc didn't make any difference either. as i said, my BIOS is configured to only boot from my SATA drive, and nothing i tried GOT any different result, although i could see the regular Safe Mode screen flash for half a second every time before i got this screen. Check the SATA connectors with the machine unplugged...they're flimsy and easily un seated.just opened everything up and blew the dust out of it tonight. the SATA's connected, the system boots, it just bypasses the Safe Mode screen to ask for boot device specification. if i don't hit F8, everything starts up just fine w/o asking for boot device. 1. Boot Failure Guard. In your BIOS setup, on the "Advanced -> CPU Configuration" display, do you have a "Boot Failure Guard" configuration option (Enable/Disable)?

How do you have it set?

What do you know about it?

Quote

Boot Failure Guard:

A Boot failure restore featuer. While system could not bootup normally at overclocking setting, the safe boot up mode will be issued from Boot Failure Guard and pvoide a BIOS setting Interface to parameter reset/correction.

2. SATA Operation Mode. In your BIOS setup, on the "Main -> IDE Configuration" display, do you have a "SATA Operation Mode" configuration option (Non-Raid/Raid)?

How do you have it set?

3. IDE Devices. What IDE devices do you have on that system?

4. Safe Mode Boot. There are other ways to initiate safe mode. The "c:\boot.ini" file may be modified with additional WINDOWS XP invocation lines all pointing to your single installation of Windows XP. You tailor the invocations with "switches" for the environment you want. In this case you would add the switch for the "Safe Mode" you want to boot into. Then whenever you boot the system, you're asked to choose the operating system (invocation) you want to load via a menu (similiar to the one you deleted in January). If you're interested in this approach, I'll see if I can find the switches; or you can use the same utility you used last time to edit the "boot.ini".

i'll check out the link for adding Safe Mode to the boot menu, thanks!
ok, checked the link, and went ahead and saved a new boot.txt to include Safe Mode in the OS boot menu, but haven't changed the actual boot.ini yet as i would rather not have to choose an OS every time i boot. silly? perhaps, but that's me. if there's another way i can do it without that, that would be great; if not, i'll suck it up and do it that way

also went BACK and looked through my BIOS to see if there was something that looked like it could be changed to avoid the boot device selection which is preventing me from simply using F8, and the only thing i saw which i thought could be involved is that my IDE is set to Primary MASTER... would this be why i'm getting that menu, even though it's not set up as a boot device? ::shrugs::1. Safe Mode. You shouldn't have to do anything "special" to enter Safe Mode. The reason I suggested returning to an operating system select menu (with an additional "Safe Mode" operating system invocation defined) during boot was to gather more data about the "problem". By determining what works and what doesn't we may be able to isolate the original "Safe Mode" boot problem. Be sure to "name" the alternate operating system invocation appropriately, so you'll recognize it in the selection menu.

Look at the following Add Safe Mode To Your Boot Options

2. IDE Drive. I'm not sure how the IDE hard drive (jumpers) should be set in a system that boots from a SATA hard drive. I'll have to do some research.

3. Boot Device Selection. Does your BIOS support a function key (e.g. F1, F12, or "F8"), that permits the manual selection of a boot device during system start up? It is possible your BIOS is using F8 which is also used to invoke Windows Advanced Options Menu, aka Start Mode menu).

4. The Smoking Gun. The following link(s) suggest ASUS may have done this, and discusses several work arounds:
what genius decided F8 should be device boot menu
Solved: Can't boot into safemode

The simplest resolution from the above links if you're quick, nimble, and have rhythm is from "Dallows":

the F8 for boot menu is only during post. so just wait for post to go away and hit F8, no problems.
Works as designed... Go figure...Quote from: dahlarbear on February 22, 2008, 06:32:37 AM
Works as designed... Go figure...

hehe, of course. i'll try to be a bit more selective with my F8 timing and see if that'll get me there. thanks a bunch! couldn't get that to work for me, so i'll just hit the /safeboot tag from msconfig when i need to run in Safe Mode. thanks for the help, guys. always a pleasure

Solve : Windows Startup help !?

Answer»

Right.... New problem....

My old XP Pro was on my D: I reinstalled XP Home on my F: (No probs) BUT !

When my PC Starts up now I dont get the old OS (Black Screen at boot) Choice menu....

The PC Just wants to boot into my old corrupt XP Pro on D:

Now here is the strange thing.... The only way I stumbled on (Maybe it slows the PC's boot process, I dont know) to get the PC to START with the OS Choice menu is to leave the original XP Home CD in the drive...

So

1 Switch on
2 Bios check
3 Raid check
4 OS Boot from CD (NO) Dont TOUCH any key etc
5 Machine displays XP Home and XP Pro (All is well)

HELP !

BTW How can I remove the old entry for XP Pro (I have always wanted to know this) Been wanting to do this in the past when finishing with multi OS PC's etc !

Anyone help ?

Thanks lads

maxmixMay not be the advice you were seeking but if i were you i would backup all you need Data wise...format all the partitions and do a clean install of XP onto the C: drive...I'm afraid I cant.... I have 4 HDD's with a lot of company data and all too big to really backup etc...

Just need to try and sort out the problem I posted, someone must have a work around etc ?

Thanks though

maxmixYou can edit the Boot.ini file and remove the XP entry and replace it with the Home entry. I STRONGLY recommend making a backup of your system before messing with the boot.ini. To edit Boot.ini you can Right Click on My Computer, click properties, click the Advanced tab, then click the Startup and Recovery button at the bottom. You'll see a drop down box that probably has two options in it and an Edit button. Click the Edit button and then if you don't know what you are looking at post the contents of the text file on this THREAD and I will tell you what to change.Brilliant Emperor.... Never new this tweak exists....

Was going to rem the XP Pro line out.....

But you tell me the correct way lol

At the ready

maxmix

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home EDITION" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
Save a copy of it as it is as bootini.old just in case.
Remove the line that has the Pro Edition listed.
Save and re-boot.Still problems.... (It's the Home version I want to boot only BTW)

so

Deleted the XP Pro entry.... and weird now....

It only boots in XP pro.... 10 times I had top reset and the 11th it boots in Home !!!!

Thats the only reason now I'm typing lol

maxmix

PS I have left the XP Pro line deleted for now..... Still got to keep the Home CD in drive....

Any other ideas ?boot from the Home CD, choose to Repair windows, that should put you in the Recovery Console.
run FIXMBR and the run FIXBOOT.
Reboot and see if you boot into Home.It says that serious damage can occur if I agree to the MBR command....

Should I chance it ?

maxmixIt won't hurt you. I do it on various machines 2-3 times per day. It's not me i'm worried about lol.... Will LYK on Monday how it goes...

Thanks

Solve : windows updates problem?

Answer»
Posts: 1

I have been experiencing problems with my computer not booting up recently. I'm running windows xp home edition and have had a number of occasions where on switching on my computer it will start loading up to the point where windows is about to start, at this point there will be a blue flash on the monitor and it will start all over again loading up it then pauses at a black screen with a COUNTDOWN timer and options to choose start in safe mode etc. I have FOUND that if I start in safe mode and then use system restore to go BACK to a point just before the scheduled windows up dates where installed the computer will work fine again. Seems that something connected with the updates is causing the problem I have now turned off automatic updates to confirm that this is the problem and have had no more problems and the computer runs fine but now I am concerned that my computer is being left WIDE open to threats without the latest updates. HEEEEEEEEEEELP Try to install one update at a time, until you find the culprit.

Solve : How do i find out what time a website was visited??

Ive looked all over the computer and cant find how to do this.thanksRight click on the SITE on your HISTORY panel, and go down to PROPERTIES. It will tell you the date and time.Well, you can get dates but not the times. However, you can sort the most recently visited sites in order last viewed.

What web browser are you using? Do you KNOW how to display the history in a separate column on the left side of the browser window? Quote from: tomshope on February 23, 2008, 02:06:51 PM

Solve : MS XP home edition SP2 will not boot.?

Answer»

Hey GUYS,
I am currently trying to fix a friends computer that runs on Win XP home edition SP 2. Here's some backround on the situation. We loaded a new memory stick onto the PC due to the fact that it was very low on usuable RAM. After this the computer rebooted fine and recognized the hardware. The next time we went to boot the PC we came ACROSS an error script saying some files or programs could not be found. I FIGURED that best plan of action would be to boot from the xp STARTUP disk only to find out my friend did not know where the original is. So as of right now I am in need of a direction to take next. If anyone has some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
TedWhat brand of computer is it?
What happens, if you remove new RAM stick?

there sight suggested i need to update 5 drivers including audio/graphics and bios now im truly confused

Empty your Temporary file folders...thanks i have already done that, also i have used registry mechanic to try to find problems after first scan found 292 errors and fixed them , would i get this error through say a power source fail some times i hear a click when pc stops is there any apps to monitor such thingsRegistry Mechanic has been known to cause issues such as this...i'd revert back to the 1st backup it made before making changes to the system and see how things run.
It's not a tool i trust.i have been having this problem for awhile before getting back on line,
i used other peoples pc's to get some updated drivers maybe i got infected that way ? also got patches for games , THINKING of that i have re-formatted my hard drive a few times which leads me to think it has to be a hard ware failure how do i check for that ?

Solve : Keyboard problems while trying to email?

When I try to email, some of the keys do things other than typing the letter. Example; the letter "r" will delete the HEADER info. The letter "t" ask me to SIGN in to CHAT. Then if I hit one of the other letters, it will let me type all the letters, at least until I go BACK to another email. It'd be nice to know what e-mail client this is...they all treat things a bit different...

Solve : computer will only start up in safe mode?

Answer»

Okay my computer was running fine last night and this morning when I turned
it on it just SAT there with the black mircrosoft sceen and would not open up
the blue screen with users on it. It would also not shut down either. I did
manual turn it off and when the screen came up I opened it in safe mode.
Which it will run on, but I did TRY and restart it and it froze again on the
black screen.
Anyone have any advice or know whats causing this? And anything I can do to
fix the problem? We just GO a new hard drive about a year ago, so I hope
thats not it...
Thanks for any help out there!!!!Could you POST in your computer's specs. Hardware and software.. Have you installed something?well I am not very computer savy, so I dont quiet now what you mean by specs. Its a dell, new hard drive about 10 months ago. No new programs installed or opened. also no wierd emails either.
windows xp professional, is what I am using currently. I also tried to restore the computer but wont let me in safe mode..
does this help at all?Why dont you try repairing your OS. If you have your windows xp cd, try to boot first from cd rom. Insert your xp cd then select the repair option.System restore should work in safe mode. What does it do when you try to USE it?

Solve : XD Drive won't read??

Answer»

So I have a HP a1709n, with a smart media/XD drive that reads CAMERA memory cards of that size. It's worked ever since I got the computer. But today I pop in the card (Which works) and nothing happens. The little light doesn't come on.

Is this possibly a driver PROBLEM? Is there somewhere I can download an update to fix this, or what else could be the problem? Help would be GREATLY appreciated as I have some pictures I need to get off this card and onto the computer relatively soon. It's possible it could be a driver ISSUE, however if the card is reading fine in the camera I'd imagine it's more than LIKELY a bad drive

Link to their driver page

Unfortunately as you can see through the above link to their drivers page they don't have stand-alone drivers for the card reader. It's likely bundled with other drivers (which I don't know how they handle them for this model of computer). What I'd suggest is that you call HP and see what they recommend, it's likely that if they don't have stand-alone drivers that if the media is being READ fine in the camera they'll simply set you up for repair.
