Solve : Copy files from one computer to another?

Answer»

Can I network 2 computers to copy files EVEN if one can only boot up in safe mode? If I have to reformat the hard drive on the one that will only boot up in safe mode, I would like to SAVE some files.

Thanks again in advance.I don't KNOW. So, what I would do is pull the HD out of the BAD machine and temporarily connect it to the other machine as a slave, i.e. second, HD, and then get the files I want from it.

But, you MAY want to wait and see what others have to say here, first.Boot up in safe mode with networking and it should work.
And what Windows version do you use?
Because in Windows98 for example, my advice it's not good.

There is another option that does not involve just Windows. If you are out of options and you can't move the harddisk from one computer to another (as slave) just let us know.Soybean - this can be done...... it does work, but you may not be able to get all your files. i just tried this and I can not get to my documents or music (anything that was stored under my profile)Quote from: pbennettatwpi on April 04, 2007, 12:05:28 AM

Solve : Issue accessing files on a hard drive - from new hd?

Answer»

I had to install a new hard drive in my lap top because of system failure. My issue is I can get to everything but my documents/music on the old hard drive (I didn't have a password).....but I get an error message saying that the drive is write protected...... which it isn't - the only area I can't access is the area that I NEED. Any ideas.....PLEASE, please, please I am begging you.......... When posting make sure to keep the below guidelines in mind.

* List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.

What type of operating system are you using on that laptop
?
Try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421GX1 - the website is good but the problem is I can not log on - that hard drive is corrupt - I have been UNABLE to repair it so it still will not boot.

About my computer -

The original HD - unnamed 40 GB - I am running
XP Pro w/Service Pack 2 version 2002
1.86 GHZ and 448 mb RAM..... I haven't reinstalled my spyware or virus protection yet.

Any other suggestions?

Solve : Whats a good +12V??

Answer»

Is this PSU the one in your ORIGINAL post?Yes, that would be the one (the unknown one).Well, Fed thinks you should look for other causes. Have you confirmed that all your fans, especially the CPU fan, are running normal? Do you know what temperature your CPU is running at? If not, you could download SpeedFan and see what it tells you. You might check all your expansion CARDS (sound/video/etc.), your RAM, hard drive cables, etc. and make sure everything is properly seated or connected.

How were you getting the voltage readings? Did you take a look at the PSU I mentioned in a previous post?I decided that the PSU was CRAP so I went out and bought a new one just over a week ago. This new one seems to be working alot better for me as I haven't had any freezes since I put it in. I guess I can CONCLUDE that the problem was that the guy who custom built my computer back in December 2004 put some cheap parts in there, the unknown PSU was a good example and I'm beginning to suspect there are some other crappy parts in my comp as well. For now on I'm just gonna go personally pick out my own parts for my computer. Thanks guys for the help though, its just too bad it had to come to taking money out of my POCKET to fix the problem. Thanks for letting us know how it turned out. I think your assessment is right, "that the guy who custom built my computer back in December 2004 put some cheap parts in there".

Solve : Computer constantly overwrites keyboard input?

Answer»

So you know how, if you use Microsoft Word, and hit the "insert" key, it toggles to and from "OVERWRITE" and "pushing the text to the right"?

My daughter pushed a button, or a combination of buttons, on her computer, and REGARDLESS of what program is on (Word, email, anything), the computer overwrites any text to the right of the cursor.

I looked in "CONTROL panel", under "keyboard", and that's no help.

I am guessing that it is a shift+ or control+, or alt+, or a combination of those characters, and MAYBE a function key, or even an alphabetic key, but I can't find help in the computer.

Can anyone tell me the magic combination?

Try here...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290938

Alan <>< Thank you for the suggestion. I went to the site, and printed the list. We will try it tonight.

It looks like most of the commands apply to Word only. I may ultimately need one that "leaks" out of Word and into the system, because the problem apparently occurs with non-Word programs.

Just out of curiosity....

Haven't seen LATIN in a while. Are you Jesuit, other order, non-order, or someone who believes in the two phrases you listed in your reply?

See if this helps, go to email and see if it is still doing it, if it is just tap the Insert key again to get back to normal.
This should work unless you have a different problemOr go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and find the keyboard...right clik it and select remove.

Upon re-boot Windows will reinstall it with the factory defaults.

Solve : Random reboots and memory errors?

Answer»

My machine was starting to act up, having trouble booting and geting random reboots, I thought it was malware so i did a compleat system REFORMAT. While installing windows I got a random reboot during the install then after reinstalling again (I never got the welcome screen to come up when I booted, it made me SUSPICIOUS) I am trying to install windows updates and I keep getting an error from update.exe

The instruction at "0z00f59c62" referenced memory at "0x60ffe30". The memory could not be "read". I will get this many times and the refrenced memory is allways the same ADDRESS. the adress is also the same after rebooting and trying again.

So my question is, I know I have hosed hardware. What do I need to replace? 0x6 is way out of 1GB mapping area (assuming ram starts at 0) according to device manager that chunk belongs to PCI bus.To me it sounds like a memory problem.

TRY pulling the RAM out and after clearing any dust in the area put the RAM back in...sometimes you can get dust to make bad connections across the contacts or it can even just be that the RAM is not seated all the way.

If this dosen't work than try changing out the RAM.

You can also DLoad and RUN Memtest on that RAM...let it run for a few hours...I would first try the Power supply. It is the least expensive piece of hardware.
I have seent this happen many times before & about 95% it was the P/S. the other 5% was the system board.

Solve : windows protection error?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavillion w/ WinME installed. I tried to update the video driver and used the wrong driver. Now the COMPUTER will only boot up in safe mode. When the boot OPTION comes up and I select "Normal" I get the following error: "Windows protection error. You need to RESTART your computer. Startup halted".

I have tried to re-install the WinME OS but once it loads the drivers and goes to restart, it doesn't. The hard drive light is on and the CD light is on but the MONITOR is off. If I restart from that point using the front panel, I'm back to the windows error message even when TRYING to re-install the OS.

Anybody know a work around for this so that I might re-install ME or another OS?

Thanks in advance.

Are you having any problems STARTING other programs? Other than this problem, is your computer running normal?windows 2000. word 2003. no i do not have my office CD. it is a genuine micorsoft edition of office. the computer was given as a gift. office has been installed for at least 2 years. i have no other problems starting other programs. my computer is still running normally. it's just microsoft word, excel, and powerpoint that do not work. Not having the Office CD may be a MAJOR problem here. Solve : Windows will not start up, please help!?

Answer»

Hello. I'm having a problem with my Windows XP operating system. It SIMPLY won't start up. I recently returned home from a 5 day vacation only to REALIZE that my computer would not start up past a screen that gives me options to start up windows. However, none of these options work:
"Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known GOOD Configuration (your most RECENT SETTINGS that worked)
Start Windows Normally"
Whenever I press enter on any of these, the computer simply freezes; nothing happens. My brother was using my computer while I was gone, and it turns out he shut down the computer by pressing the power button and it has not been able to start since. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Here I post exactly what the screen says:

" We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally"

Once again, I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.

Solve : Trouble getting computer to boot?

Answer»

Hi the other day we had our electric go out for about 20 mins, When it came back up I went to turn the computer on and it would not boot up. When I removed hard DRIVE, power supply etc. and put in another computer I had everything booted and was fine. The computer will turn on but just a black screen on the monitor. After being frustrated with it I left it off for awhile and went back then I did get a screen saying I had to put in the CMOS settings for date and time. I did this and the computer came up just fine. I turned off 5 times and REBOOTED and everytime it worked. I unplugged the computer and put it back where we had it and when I went to reboot several times it would not boot up again. I am kind of lost of what else to look for. Could a power surger MESSED the CMOS up? Could it also be something as simple as replace the battery on the mother board. Any HELP at all would be appreciated. ThanksIf it worked until you unplugged it, I see no harm in REPLACING the battery.Carbon Thanks so much! Actually I did try it earlier and got a batter for $3 and guess what? That was it. I was so glad at least it was a cheap fix so I'm thankful. Thanks for the help.Heh, all right then.

Glad you're problem is solved.

Solve : Computer running but will not boot?

Answer»

I recently attempted to start my computer after a power loss occured while I was at work. The computer was off. When I started the computer all lights CAME on and fans turned on, but only a black screen saying no signal.

I checked the screen on another computer WORKED fine.
I checked on-board video to no avail.

Changed mobo, processor, and RAM (all brand new)

Computer still will not boot, no video from onboard video as well.

Hard drive does spin, all power available to DVD ROMs and spinning disk.

Any suggestions as to wat may be a cause
ie...power supply?First, is it POSSIBLE you can try another monitor?tried another monitor, same problem..... any thoughts on if power supply could have something wrongIf the fans start up and everything, I don't think it would be the PSU.

When you start the computer, are there any Beeps at all?No.. no beeps, i'll need to check to make sure onboard speakers are plugged correctly but i believe they areAre you sure there is no actual video card?

Can you tell us exactly what happens when you turn press the power button? When turning on... all fans, lights and mobo light is turning on..
Hard drives are spinnning and SOUNDS as if the HDD is trying to read.
There is no sound for post.
The monitor stays balck the entire time.
Before screen went and stayed black orriginally BIOSTAR showed up onscreen and froze..tried to hard boot but thats when screen went and stayed black

This is the second mobo, RAM, and CPU that this has occured with in the last 3 days...just rebuilt tonite.

I have a 500 MB SATA HDD.. 2- DVD burners, and FLOPPY

Problem ocuured originally on a BIOSTAR mobo, Intel Presario 3.2 GB prossesor, 2 GB RAM

Currently upgraded to ASUS M3A78 mobo, AMD 2.1 Triple Core, and Kingston 1 GB DDR2 1066 x2

Oh... originally start with Raideon X1650 card on original mobo, then tried onbord video on BIOSTAR mobo, then onboard video on ASUSDoes it not show the BIOS anymore?

I'm not entirely sure, but I would try a new CMOS battery.Nope.. no BIOS, I will try one tomorrow....have someone in town with some spare parts that we will try more trouble shooting as well..... I will update with any findings

Thanks for the suggestions

PS... please let me know if you may think of anything else..thanks againYou could try removing the battery for about 20 minutes and see what happens.
Recently, someone came here with a similar problem and a new battery got it working again so I suggested it. Will do .... hopefully ASUS wouldnt send a crap battery but it is electronics...

Solve : Copy files to Users Directroy?

Answer»

New to the board, not sure if this is the right forum... but here it goes.

I'm trying to write a batch file to copy a directory from a network drive and create that directory to the user currently logged on Documents and Settings (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Jimmy.Joe\) computers have multiple users and network permissions will not allow access to C:\Documents and Settings\all users\
current OS Windows XP.

Thanks
PaulHi Paul,

I'm not an expert on networking, or batch programming either for that matter, but if copying this directory MEETS a genuine operational need - ie will result in a genuine productivity or efficiency gain for all users - then your network administrator ought to have the brains and the gumption to realise that you need a permission to access All Users; and YOU need to make sure that point GETS across!

The only alternative I can think of is the obvious ONE of iterating the Xcopy command as many TIMES as you have different users, specifying each user in turn. This is obviously a much clunkier and clumsier solution because if you have twenty users, data transfer will TAKE twenty times as long, and will take up twenty times as much disc space.

Solve : reformatting flash drive?

Answer»

i can't format my flash drive on mycomputer WINDOW error cannot complete formattingWe need more information.Try it thru Disk Management...
Right click My Computer and select Manage and then Disk Management.
Post back if this doesn't do it...Bit short on info here.

Does this card function PREVIOUSLY? Camera or as USB stick?

I just yesterday formatted an SD successfully but have had two instances with flash items where formatting would not complete and the REASON I decided was that the card/stick was faulty.

IMO - every single ''gate'' within the chip must be viable or seemingly the formatting process cannot complete - even tho sometimes it would appear the device can still function - maybe because a portion is useable enough. If we ASSUME that the flash drive is 100% healthy, could it be that (knowingly or unknowingly) you are trying to reformat it in NTFS format?

If you want it to be NTFS you cannot use the standard Format shortcut. You have a couple of OPTIONS, that I am aware of. Either you can open a command prompt window and use the Convert command (which will preserve your data) or, if you go to the HP website, you can download a free utility which will format flash drives as NTFS.

Solve : New Custom Computer wont load Windows XP?

Answer»

I just built a NEW computer and when it turns on and starts loading Windows XP It comes with an error screen that says-
Windows encountered an error and was shut down.

Then it goes on about some other stuff to check and see if its the problem and none of them are.
It also says to go into BIOS and try disabling memory shadowing and caching witch I don't know how to do.
Then it says to disable or check for updates for any of the drives listed below which are listed below.
This is what it says-
Stop: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xF748E0BF, OxF78DA208, 0xF78D9F08)
pci.sys - Address F748E0BF base at F7487000 Datestamp 3b7d855c

If anyone knows what this means please help.
Computer Specs-
Mobo is a Biostar TP43
RAM is G-Skill DDR2 1066
CPU is Intel Core 2 Dou 3.0 ghz
Graphics Card is Nvidia 8800 GT
HDD is Western Digital SATA 500gb
Is Windows installed, or are you trying to install it?
Your problem could be bad memory, a bad HDD or cable, or that the SATA drivers aren't installed.
If you answer the first question, we'll be able to help you troubleshoot.Im trying to install it.I would SAY the issue is most likely that your SATA drivers aren't loaded.
Whilst installing, there will be a brief prompt ASKING you to hit F6 if you want to install RAID drivers.
You need to hit F6, and insert a floppy disk with the drivers on it. If you haven't got one, you'll need to REFER to the motherboard manual in order to find out how to make one.
Before you try this, you might want to give Memtest a shot - http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
Download it, unzip it, and burn the ISO to a CD. Then boot from the CD and have it test your memory for a long time, preferably overnight. if no errors are shown, your RAM isn't the issue.
I do think it's the SATA drivers though, that's usually what causes this issue.I dont have a floppy drive and theres no floppy disk that came with the SATA drives

Then simply put them on a flash drive or burn them to a CD...
At the prompt direct the machine to where they are...Quote from: patio on August 23, 2008, 01:21:46 PM

When did the problem start? Has it happened all the time?this computer is "new", an older(2002) E4000 gateway. I never loaded a game on it before. it is asking for open GL drivers. the games are silent hill 2 and alone in the dark. Oh no, not OpenGL. I quite recently had a problem with that and I couldn't get Medal of Honor to work.

I would first try to download and INSTALL Video Card Drivers again.
Go to the manufacturer website and look for the right video card and download the drivers.

Are there any error messages when you try to playt he game?it dont say much except that it cant finish install TILL I get GL drivers. then its just back to desktop. ok, the card is working in as much as the moniter is killer now. great picture! but, cant load games. this "open GL", what is this? OpenGL:
http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=what+is+opengl&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&aq=-1&oq=what+is+openg

My problem was I didn't have an OpenGL compatible video card.

I need that exact error message when you try to install the game.OKEY DOKEY, I will reload the game, make note of the message and get back to ya!its a "silent hill message" it says the system crashed last time and is starting in safe mode". it then goes to a black screen, forever. Huh? Can you give us a screenshot? To find out what ver. of Windows you are running open Explorer and clik Help/About...

Solve : i have a big problem,any ideas??

Answer»

hi guys, is there any way to logon to the administrator account WITHOUT use the password?

this is the situation.
someone was using home pc (WINDOWS xp spc 2) he created a password to login as admin. now he doesn'nt remember it and he didn'nt WRITE it anywhere.the pc has very important info.
please help me. Forum rules PREVENT DISCUSSIONS on how to crack/bypass security measures regardless of the circumstances.

We cannot be 100% certain that the computer in question is in the hands of the rightful/legal owner. You could take the pc to a tech shop for assistance if you can show proof of ownership.

Good luck.

Solve : Acronis Loader fatal error . . .bootup error message?

Answer»

Thanks for asking, Broni ( this site is incredibly helpful!!)

I registered on Acronis forums and have been given detailed instruction on how to use the Recovery Console in XP and use the fixmbr and fixboot commands to fix the partition error. Said once that's done, I can reinstall TI and get more support. Haven't tried the fix yet as I want to back up some data files . . . just in case.

Will let you guys know what happens.

thanks,
PhilWe'll be waiting for good news An update . .

Good help from Acronis group but still unresolved.

Suggested I use Window Recovery console with fixmbr and fixboot, but . . . when using my Home EDITION XP disk, prompts me for Administrator password. Never put an AP in that I can remember and tried several options WITHOUT success (including not putting one in).

Then suggested my disk may be outdated and I should find an SP2 disk. Can't find one and recently my Windows updated to SP3. Also suggested I download from MS and install it directly onto my system, but not sure I want something in there that I'll probably not use again and 2. info SUGGESTS system will boot up on Recovery window since it's used by IT folks (not sure if that's even correct).

To make a long story even longer, my system's working great other than the annoying message on startup. From my years of aircraft maintenance experience I feel like I should abide by the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't @#$% with it."

Once again, thanks to all of you and introducing me to a great resource. I'll be hangin' out here for a long time to come. It's certainly educational and even better, well run.

Cheers,
PhilWhen prompted for a password try simply hitting Enter...

I don't like giving up on an issue...i'll try and re-create your problems on my test bench machine that already has Acronis installed on it.
Do you recall how exactly you removed it from your system ? ?Actually, the first thing I did when I saw the prompt was to just hit the "enter" and it still prompted me.

Thought I had re-posted here that I hadn't "uninstalled" but rather INSERTED the Toshiba boot disks and restored the system. Recall somewhere along the process it prompted me to remove "a partition" and THINKING that was the Acronis (secure zone, or something), I removed it (I may have re-posted this on the other forum, sorry).

Reloaded Win XP Home Edition and then reloaded apps. Message has appeared ever since then.

Thanks again,
PhilThanx for the info...
I'll give it a go and see if i can re-create the issue and find a fix.

Solve : Turned on computer and received a "password key" message?

Answer»

I have a compaq machine, with Windows 2000 Professional, and the last thing I did was install a trend micro anti VIRUS program. This morning, I turned the computer on and I got a rectangular box that said "password key" with a little picture of a key on it, and down below to the right it says F10.

So I restarted the computer, HELD down the F10 key figuring I could try to get to BIOS (not that I really know what I'm doing), but it still came up with this message. It wouldn't let me do anything.

This computer doesn't have a password on it. I've never installed one, so why is it coming up with this message now? What happens, when you press Enter at that screen? If Its the bios password, and enter doesnt work.. open the machine , try not to touch anything else.. remove the circular battery from the motherboard, START the machine let it run.. the password should be removed, then shut it down and put the battery back in.

if the password comes back when you replace the battery, remove it again.. and go into bios and find the master reset, or set everything back to defaults.. (remove the password)
None of the issues described seem to have anything to do with BIOS. Also if you aren't sure what you're doing, I wouldn't open up your computer and start poking around. It's very easy to fry components with a little static electricity and then you'll really have problems. FYI, if you ever do stick your hands into the computer, be sure that you un-plug it first!! If you still need to access BIOS try repeatedly pushing the key while it's booting. You might want to also try F1, F2 and the DEL key if F10 dosen't work. I WOULD instead try ..when you boot repeatedly pushing the F8 key to see if you can Boot in to the Advanced start up screen. If so try Last good Config.. If that doesn't work and you can get back to the Advanced Start Up screen ..Select Start in SAFE Mode, then go to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs and remove Trend Micro, re-boot and see what happens. Good Luck!Another "how I get around the password?" question. Personally, I wonder if there is some stuff the OP is not telling us. It wouldn't be a laptop, by any chance? In any case, a password demand right at power on has got to be for a BIOS password, and they don't get changed or set by anti-virus programs.

Helmbold, I am afraid you have been told some nonsense. Realistically, your only option is going to be to contact Compaq, and show some proof of ownership.

Password bypass questions do NOT get help on here.

Computer is not a laptop - thanks for everyone's suggestions though! I will try what I can. Seems bizarre that this all happened after downloading trend micro, and it may just be a fluky coincidence. I'll try all the things suggested and see what happens, and if that doesn't work, well, it's back to square one!

Thanks again!P.S. To answer the other question about what happens if you press enter - all it does is keep scrolling down with the request for the password key... and you can't get out of the screen by doing anything that I've found, other than shutting it off and starting again.... and it's right after power on? Before the BIOS screen, memory test, etc?
Who else has access to this machine ? ?
As Diaz stated no programs will create this condition...

Solve : file system for hard disk??

Answer»

hi can any buddy give me the idea that upto what limit we have create partition in fat32 file system during the installation of windows 98?
plz help me??
Not sure what you mean by limit. Be useful to know the size of drive in total initially.

Taking a guess as an example .... say your HDD was 30Gb. Make your C drive for system a THIRD of that or even HALF ... space 'disappears'' on system drives! With remaining space make logicals to suit choice -- so maybe 15Gb for system and two 7.5Gb logicals.

You'll have to state your question more precisely tho.I think the answer your looking for is found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/prork/prdf_fls_pxjh.mspx?mfr=true

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463

Looks like 2TB is the PARTION size limiation for FAT32 however Windows 98SE boot disk must be used in order to FORMAT the drivenilesh04ec, in English you NEED just ONE of these at the end of a question: "?". More just looks stupid and irritates.

Solve : getting files from program files to all programs?

Answer»

ok, i downloaded a virus about a week ago, knowing i would have to reinstall, i invested in a external back up DRIVE. i copied all of my programs and all of my files to this. im in the middle of copying all of these files back, and i have some in program files. that i would like to appear in All Programs, but i cant seem to get them to appear.

when i right click the folders that i want to be in all programs, hidden is not checked off. is there any way that i can move those files to all programs? or will i have to reinstall?1. Programs have to be REINSTALLED. They can't be copied, and pasted.
2. You NEED to scan all your backed up files with antivirus, because you might have transfered some infection to backup files while your COMPUTER was infected.thanks very much that was the answer i was looking for. i was aware of part TWO.

Solve : Computer hijacked?

Answer» YESTERDAY my computer was FINE and nothing was wrong with it. I woke this morning - I opened Media Player to play some music and Lavasoft's Adaware 8.0 spawned. I got a warning message that two applications could not RUN at the same time. In fact, every application I start spawns Adaware 8.0. I tried to open CCleaner to remove it and Adaware 8.0 opens instead. I WENT to Add and Remove programs and Adaware 8.0 opens instead. I rebooted into Safe Mode and tried to open a command prompt and Adaware 8.0 opens.

I have Windows XL Pro with SP 3. I'm at a loss about what to do to eliminate this - any ideas?System Restore? No, it won't let me. I tried that and it opened Adaware 8.0. Everything i try to open or do makes the computer open Adaware 8.0. Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.

Solve : Media Player 11 disconnects Internet access/switches off firewall?

Answer»

Anytime I install Windows Media Player 11 on my PC, it works for a fewdays and then when I start it, it disturbs my Internet access and firewall. The two are virtually switched off and Windows gives me an error message "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" and gives me the OPTION of SENDING an error report to Microsoft or not. I must also mention that I downloaded the Player a few years ago. I do not know whether it has has changed since then, or whether I need a special file to add to it.
What is the meaning of this error message and how can I stop this thing from happening?
Running XP SP2, 512MB RAM, PIIITry reinstalling Media Player 11 from the SOURCE:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspxYou mean re-download?Yes, go to that site, download and install it. See if that helps.I have re-downloaded it and re-installed it; the problem still occurs. As soon as I start the Media Player it give s me the error message after about 7 seconds and then messes up my firewall and Internet Connection. If I keep my hands off the player the PC works without problems.
I don't know whether this will help, but I seem to have the same problem when I try to install IE7: the same errror message appears.Avoid using Windows Media Player - ONE of the worst application ever.
Try VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Like your judgement...I have the Video Lan Player, just that it seemed to me that the Media Player has more sound options, and the problem doesn't seem to occur with Media Player 10Well, for videos, I use VLC, but for music, I use Winamp.

Solve : After Clean Install of XP - Unable to execute some MS-DOS Commands?

Answer»

I have a Dell 2400 with 756 mb RAM. Just did a clean reinstall of XP on a new 320 gb drive. Now, I can not locate the standard large MS-DOS icon (I can get to a dos window from a command prompt), and I can't do some DOS based operations, such as format a floppy disk in Drive A. I suspect there is some simple switch thingy somewhere, but I can't find it. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I searched the database here and found no topics which appeared to be on point. I run a rather large DOS based application on this machine, and this inability is a matter of some concern.Hi veritasffg,

I don't have the knockdown solution, but I can sympathise because I run a database in dBASE 5 for DOS which recently just stopped working altogether under Windows 2000 (to my horror).

In my case it appears that the Windows VDM (Virtual DOS Machine) had become corrupted. You can test for this by clicking on Start > Run, then TYPE COMMAND.COM and hit OK. If a DOS window opens, showing the command prompt, then your VDM is ok (according to Microsoft) and the problem must be elsewhere.

If the window won't open, then your VDM is corrupted. This is REPAIRABLE but not by simply re-installing the VDM. There is a complex sequence of steps to be followed and you can find the full instructions at the Microsoft site - unfortunately I've mislaid the link, so you will have to search for it!

As to (re-)creating a Command prompt shortcut, this is just a matter of right-clicking anywhere on the desktop, selecting New > Shortcut, and referencing it to C:\Windows\System32\Command.com. Having created it, you can drag-and-drop it to anywhere in your Start menu.

Are you getting any specific error messages when your DOS applications fail to run?

Not the biggest thing on your mind right now, I know, but in case you are not aware of it, there is a third-party utility called TameDOS which you can purchase for $US20 or something like that; it loads in the background and enables DOS applications to run smoothly and reliably under the later Windows versions. It is a very professional product and I recommend it without any hesitation. Thanks very much alan1000. The application I wrote (in Clipper, in 1988), still runs just fine, except that I can't print anything. I intend to look into the TameDOS program you mentioned; maybe it will restore my ability to print under XP. I'm reluctant to EVEN try to run this 20 year old application under Vista. By the way, my inability to perform certain DOS commands (mentioned in the original post) was due to a very obvious thing which I overlooked. In a batch file which I run immediately after shelling out to DOS, I had a path command, which omitted System 32, so that explained that. I'm pretty much back to where I was before the reinstall, except that I can't find the original MS-DOS Icon (I've searched everywhere which seems to be logical for a copy of it, but it's just gone. You have any ideas on that?

Again, thanks for your help - and it's good to hear from an old timer still dBaseing himself. For alan1000:

Today, I downloaded and installed Ver 5 of TameDOS, as you suggested. It is miraculous. Now I can print with no problems from an old application written 20 years ago.

Thanks so much for giving me the tip about this product. Of course, I will buy it - and if they EVER finalize a version for Vista, I want to try it also.

Oh - by the way - for this, and another similar post I filed during a senior moment - the original MS-DOS Icon - I mean the ORIGINAL - I finally found where it probably was all along - in an obviously named file - C:\Windows\System32\PIFMGR.DLL. So that very pressing issue is now resolved, also.

Thanks again.

Solve : Dang more boot problems : P?

Answer»

My computer recently was acting WHACK, and it would FREEZE when I'd try to scan for viruses or anything. I tried safe mode, but then it just went to a blank screen, and would just stay there.

So I thought ok nothing important in there I'll just wipe everything with my windows disk and reinstall windows, ok so I go through the whole process of reinstalling windows BUT all of a sudden it freezes half way ok so I thought alright just try doing again, but my friend suggested I do a full wipe of the partitions on my computer and make a new one and FORMAT it to NTFS.

So I did that and reformatted, and then when it reboots after formatting I get a FREAKING BLACK SCREEN!. Then I tried reformatting one more time, and then it gets another BLACK SCREEN COME ON *censored*!!!!!!. So I go back into windows install, and I just see that its been formatted, and I'm like OK SWEET now I'll just install windows and I'll get a fresh start, but NO as soon as the bar gets to 100% I get a god forsaken BLACK SCREEN OMG COME ON.

So guys basically I have NO Idea what's going on, and i would love it if you guys could help me because I don't have a reset button on my computer STUPID DELL I HATE YOU. So I've repeatedly had to just plug my power cable out, and I'm worried its gonna hurt my computer, So please give me a good solution

THANK YOU.try it again and select the non-quick method, theres a quick method and a slower method , if you still get a black screen maybe just try waiting for it? to reply for your non quick method thing.

When I reformatted I ALWAYS Chose the NON quick method, and I would still get the black screen lol. There's more than likely a problem with your memory or hard drive. Check them.it did say when I was actually able to start windows sometime it did say that my hard drive was about to fail, but I've only had for about a year, HOW COULD IT HAVE FAILED ALREADY. Seriously I'm never buying a dell ever again.HDD can fail after only one week of usage. Go the site of your HDD and download a diagnostic program to check your HDD. You could also download a program to check your CPU. Hi David,
I bought a brand new HP computer last year Mod. 8180a paid heaps for it and after three weeks the whole system crashed. Why? Because the mother board was, to use a farming espression, 'a pile of manure'! and had to be REPLACED. now it's good.
So I guess that it isn't just dell that can have problems.
cheers and good luck,
babsYeah, that's definately the HDD then. And a year is PLENTY of time for it to fail.Open the box and get the model number for the hard drive than go on the web site for the manufacture and download the tools for it. The OFFER a drive scanner to check and see if the drive is really bad or not.

If it checks out good than go to.....

http://www.memtest86.com/

and try to test your memory.
Let us know how it goes....

Solve : CF-41 Toughbook?

Answer»

I'm trying to restore a Panasonic CF-41, I have a repair disc for it but it won't open on my other machine.

The CF came with a Windows 95 disc in the drawer, but that's not functioning.
I have tried the repair disc in my machine, (XP) but it won't open.

I know it's old, but I thought I'd give it a go to restore it.

Hope someone out there can help, it WOULD be apreciated.
Regards.
Fred.Let me get this straight...your computer has Windows 95 and you're trying to REFORMAT it with an XP CD from another computer?

If that's the case...first of all, it is quite common for you to not be able to use the Windows CD from one computer on another computer. Many of them are brand-specific. You probably need an original XP CD.

Second...I don't know how old these computers are, but it might not be able to handle XP. What are the computer's specs?NO....I didn't try what you said, if you read my post you will see that I obtained a Manual & Repair disc, and tried to open it on my machine, so that I could find out a bit about the insides of the CF-41, but the Manual disc won't open on my machine.

I know that this is an obsolete model, but I thought I would just try to restore it, if it can't be done then Ok. ...no SLEEP lost. How exactly are you trying to open this CD ? ?

Have you tried Explorer ? ?Many THANKS Patio for your reply, but I managed to get it open.
The trouble now is that it's the wrong manual, it's a user manual and I needed one to strip down the machine.
It looks as if it would be too expensive to restore , it needs a HD, and possibly a Disc Drive.
it's a pity, as it's in very good condition for it's age.
Once again, thanks.
Regards.
Fred.Why.............when..you can restore...............list all comps.Don't UNDERSTAND your post Merlin.....could you be a bit more specific.

Solve : HELP: User Profile Path?

Answer»

In Computer Management, Local Users & Groups, in the Profile TAB we can set:

- User Profile Path
- Home Folder Local Path

Am wondering does anyone KNOW how to use these?

I copied my entire HARD DISK contents (via BartPE so I get full unlimited access) to a remote PC. I then fresh reinstalled WINDOWS XP SP2 on my PC as well as creating a second partition for PERSONAL data files. Then I copied backed up "C:\Document and Settings\" entire folder from the remote PC to my second partition data drive.

I have 3 user accounts to setup. I understand & know how to redirect My Documents folder (via right-click properties). But am interested in actually setting - User Profile Path - Home Folder Local Path - but don't know how to use them.

I should've used the Files & Settings Transfer Wizard.. but it's too late now. I already copied my old PC entire harddrive and then wiped it clean. So am wondering is it possible to export/migrate these old PC user profiles into my new PC?

I believe things like Outlook Express, MSN Messenger, and many other Microsoft programs uses GUIDs or security IDs... and the files are ENCRYPTED or cannot be opened unless it matches the user account's security ID.

I did a search on http://support.microsoft.com/ for "Windows XP User Profile". Some interesting ones are http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307800 & http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/ .

I tried the User Profile Path (1st link) for this is what I get:

"Windows did not load your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. Windows did not load your profile because a server copy of the profile folder already exists that does not have the CORRECT security. Either the current user or the Administrator's group must be the owner of the folder. Contact your network administrator."

"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off."

Solve : Media card reader?

Answer»

Posted this in WINDOWS and not in hardware cause it's windows's fault...

I have a 4 slot MEDIA card reader. All 4 slots show up as 4 separate "removable disks" all the time. It's really annoying because EVERYONE gets confused about which one is the flash DRIVE they just plugged in. Can I change it so that the reader shows up only when there is actually a card in it? Also, it would be nice to remove it from the safely remove hardware thing since that completely shuts it off until you reboot. Also, if possible, I want to get rid of my USB WiFi dongle from the safely remove hardware list since I only safely remove it by accident all the time when I try to unplug my flash drive..."USB-driveletter-mngr" - available as usbdlm.zip - do a search - wil allow you to turn off visibility on those you don't use or want to see.

It is useful with a reader left in place to label the reader itself for letter sequence which helps with ID of which slot = which drive letter.

You could also if card reader left in - possibly use TweakUI to stop letters showing.

Wouldn't have thought you'd need a reboot to reinstate reader, if it was ''safely removed'' during a session. Your safely remove list tho will I think by default show all USB items active, except a hub which would show in Device manager.

Solve : 500gb c: drive?

Answer»

is it possible for me to make my c: drive to be all 500gb of my hd in windows xp pro sp2? im starting to lose hope that this is a possibility. all 500gb are located in computer managment.Do you mean that you have a hard drive with more than one partition?
What do you mean?

What is the current C drive CAPACITY?

What about any other drives (PARTITIONS)?

EDIT: you posted before me, JJ3000 its all 1 drive. 500 gb, i only had a xp sp1 installer which only allows 170gb for C.

i have formatted the drives with out assigning paths. because i want to have all 500gb's on one partition. i actually unformatted all except for c. and now i have 300+gb of unallocated. What is your operating system?XP Pro SP2^^ Go into computer management and select disk management near the bottom.
Now you should be able to see your hard drives layout.
You said you had unallocated space there.
Right click the unallocated space and select NEW Volume.
You will see a series of screens that prompt you on size and file system to use. Choose NTFS ok i have the drive that isnt the problem. now it assigned its self the letter G. which isnt exactly what i want , if what i ask is not possible i would cope with that setting.im looking into this NOrton Partition Magic program, im installing a trial as we speak. lets see what that can do.Why do you need the entire 500 gigs as a single partition?

Lots of people partition there hard drives and use one drive for programs and another for videos and another for music and another for whatever they wish to put there.

Before spending money on partition magic play around with the two you have now. Put programs on your C drive and data on your G. You might grow to like it.i the past i had a c drive and a D drive for a long time. i just didnt like the way it felt. i constantly filled up 1 drive and had to move stuff around. and i just really didnt like it. some how i had one drive with 250 and another drive with 250. not sure how i managed that... my main reason for not liking that whole set up is because i have alot of apps... they take up more then 170gb or 250, i'd like it to all APPEAR in program files, is there a way that i can link programs from a D drive to a C drive? If you have all of your data backed up and are ready to reinstall all of your programs then you could do a clean install of XP.

From what you are saying it sounds like it would be very time consuming to reinstall all of those programs

That is the only way I know of to format the C drive in XP.
Partition magic may be your best bet to resize it without disturbing your data.I'm not sure (which is why I have not replied yet) but Partition Magic has been recommended MANY times here in the forums.

Solve : Halloween backround?

Hi all. I am fairly new at HTML but I can save and UPLOAD to the site PHOTOBUCKET and from there, place HTML in my Ebay auctions like this....

Can ANYONE tell me how I can EASILY add a light/faint BACKROUND to my auctions? I am selling Halloween costumes and would like to have a faint pumpkin backround or wallpaper to the entire auction.

Once I find one I like, what do I do to get it inside my auction? I read somewhere to right click on the prefered backround/wallpaper and click SET AS BACKROUND or SAVE BACKROUND AS. (I forgot which) But from there, how do I get it in my auction? Again, I use PHOTOBUCKET as my album.

Solve : Dell XPS One?

Answer»

Somehow the screen DISPLAY has turned horizontal, how do I change the display so I can read it normally

Kind of hard to help when we don't know what display driver you have installed...

Let's assume it's nVidia.

You can open your display's control PANEL...choose "ROTATE display" and rotate it back to its original position.

Would help to know hat type of graphics CARD you have installed, THOUGH...as well as the operating system.

Apparently you had to have made some changes in order for it to be displayed the way it currently is...it just doesn't do that by itself, ya know.Try ctrl.>alt.> up arrow.

Solve : Windows updates not installing?

Answer»

I've got WINDOWS XP and service pack 2 installed. Up till a few weeks ago I was getting the auto updates from windows. Then I had some problems with java updates. I was told that windows installer needed to be reinstalled, which I did, no luck with java updates, but then I was getting windows updates when I shut down, saying they would be installed before windows closes. This has happened 3 times so far and the updates have not been installed . I tried a manual install and I was told to update the window installer which I did. I thought I had downloaded several security patches but after each was downloaded they failed to install. Then I tried service pack 3 and it seemed to download but afterwords it said it too had failed to install. I am stumped.
Any advice appreciated

Attempt to run Windows Update

It worked for others with the same problem.

Good luckThanks....did it and it seemed to have worked as I downloaded service pack 3, and it installed and started to update when it was copying new files I got a message saying Windows service pack KB 936929 window update of system files cannot copy atapi.sys.It asked if I wanted to go ahead with the install, I did. About half way into the setup I got a "service Pack 3 setup error access is denied" Not sure what that is? So it uninstalled everything and at the end I got a message saying the service pack install was not completed and windows xp may not work properly. So I did a reboot and it seems windows is STILL working properly ( Thank god)...very perplexing.
Edit/Delete MessageYes, SP.3 still generates errors on some systems, don't know why, but after I installed all updates since SP.2 it (SP.3) installed without problems.

Good to know that re-registering the update dll's solved your original problem.

Good luckGet a decent FIREWALL...not win.ooooActually I still don't have service pack 3 installed and after the message saying that XP may not work properly I don't know if its worth it.
Are you saying that the Windows firewall caused the problem ? The Access denied message I got when I tried the install?Whilst AGREEING with Merlin that you should have a better firewall than the one supplied with XP I don't understand what he is inferring in his post. You may already have a third party firewall running, it's not been mentioned in any of the foregoing posts, and I doubt if the XP firewall has any bearing on your problem with SP.3.

Have you installed all the post SP.2 updates

Suggestion: Download SP.3 manually to your hdd then you won't have to re-download to re-install it.I assume I have all of SP 2 updates. I have to keep remembering that I need to use IE to check this information, I use Firefox so Its hard for me to keep track.
I have
Security Update for Windows XP (KB946648)
I don't have
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) and I did get this error code
Error Code: 0x80072F78

Solve : Auto arrange with a widescreen monitor??

Answer»

Just yesterday I bought a 22 inch widescreen monitor and I IMMEDIATELY noticed it auto arranged all my folders and files on my pc. I THOUGHT okay I guess it was just that one time thing from switching from my old non widescreen to this one, but it wasnt.

Yes the Auto Arrange option is unchecked on my folders but it just keeps doing it no matter what I try. Does anyone have some INSIGHT on this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated please...According to my experiences, you should firstly check your monitor driver.
right click the "my computer"->"hardware"-> "device management"
(or just WIN+R,and then type "Devmgmt.msc" in the "run" dialog)

in the window pop up ,choose "monitor" ,SELECT item below ,unload it
press F5 the refresh

then restart your computer.

then "operation" ->"check for hardware change"

I do not know if you can understand what I mean.
I really poor in English

Solve : Microsoft .NET Framework error message?

Answer»

HP Pavilion Laptop running Windows XP

After my last restart, computer is trying to install a "PhotoGallery"...gets part way through when a Microsoft .NET Framework error message pops up that I can't rid of. It says "An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object." When I press Continue, it doesn't...and I can't X out of it. I can't get the computer to stop trying to install the program...and consequently can't install anything else (like another spyware program) since it thinks the computer is currently installing this program.

I had just run Ad-Aware and SpyBot and had ALSO tried to get some clip art off an old image disk that came with my printer. Not sure if either of these acts caused or added to this PROBLEM. Please help!!!!

Thanks. So this program is starting up with your computer? Disable it with msconfig...

Click start
click run
type "msconfig"
click the "startup" tab
uncheck anything that looks like photogallery.exe or anything thats location is something like "c:\program files\photogallery"
click apply
restart computer
you'll get a warning saying changes were detected, just check the box and press ok.

OR

if you have windows defender
start it
click tools
click software explorer
go to startup items
disable anything to do with photo galleryThanks for the response.

I tried the msconfig THING and didn't see any .exe that could have been PhotoGallery in the Start Up tab.

I then remembered that I had recently added a printer to our home network and know that they often include photo gallery programs. I uninstalled the print driver and after several restarts, my problem seems to be resolved.

Again, thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for posting BACK Let me guess.......it was an HP ? ?

Solve : WinXP will not boot up?

Compaq Presario SR1603WM WindowXP, when I turn the COMPUTER on,the Monitor has a black screen and SYSTEM just beeps 4-seconds apart till I turn it off. there are no beep codes, just a steady 4-second beep. Need Help.

sbaDid you move this MACHINE recently ? ?
Sounds like the RAM is not seated properly.
Remove and re-install.
As always when working inside the machine remove all power and take anti-static precautions... Thanks patio for the info, but I tried reinstalling the memory first. The unit has only 256 in memory. Looks like it just CRASHED. PC TURNS on, all fans are running and the monitor is black .What KIND of video does this have? If the video isn't on your motherboard the video card may need to be reseated or it could be dead. Do you have another video card you could swap? See Here

Another thing you may try is to borrow a known working PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to see if that's the culprit...

When are you seeing the symbols...in the startup screen before Windows loads or after ? ?
If before .... that hard drive may be failing. DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site.
Another thing it could be is the CMOS battery but i would test the drive first.
If it is afterwards what program is it showing up in ? ?The symbols show up at my sign in screen. If I click on Start, the list is all in symbols. All of the shortcuts on my DESKTOP are named with symbols. If I click on "my computer", all the files are named with symbols. I've started the computer in safe mode & ran virus & spyware software. The symbols still show up in safe mode. I have disconnected the computer & I'm using another one until we can figure out what to do next.Quote from: qinghao on January 28, 2008, 02:51:30 AM

Did you try this? I think a question as to whether you're looking at foreign language such as Chinese still needs to be answered. The first thing I did when this problem started was to check "Regional and Language" & it was set properly.I'm thinking now that this may be a hardware problem. I took the cover off the computer & vacuumed the dust out. The drive is a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV Model ST340016A. I went to their site & downloaded their diagnostic software. I haven't used it yet, but I noticed that, what I would call a belt, is twisted & ripped. And, that "belt" is a flat, wide cable that is connected to the hard drive, right? Being twisted is not unusual, but "ripped" is definitely a bad condition. If it appears to be damaged, it should definitely be replaced. Quite likely, that's the problem here.Thank you. My next step is to get the computer to a repair person & hope it doesn't cost much to replace that cable. Do you happen to know if my files should be ok or am I going to lose all my pictures?Well, you might buy a cable and install it yourself. It's not difficult. You can buy the cables online or find one at a local computer shop. Here's one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812105909

The files on your hard drive may be OK; I don't think anyone can say for sure without actually replacing the cable and starting the computer. My computer is now at a computer repair shop. The cable is FINE. They come ripped for some reason. The computer man thinks that it is a virus & he will try to fix it tomorrow. I'll keep you updated on the results in case this happens to anyone else. Thanks to everyone for helping.
