Solve : wont let me log in?

Answer»

i ran a SPYWARE program and when it finished scanning i clicked on "fix the problem" button. it stated that two of the "problems" couldn't be fixed but if i restarted the computer it might HELP. When i restarted and clicked on my log in name it say's "starting your personal settings" and then it just stops. the screen isn't FROZE i don't think because the mouse is still able to move around.
Did my spyware program delete something i needed? I know nothing about computers so please help!!!!Reboot your system tapping F8 as soon as the system starts up.
From the Advanced Start up options screen choose Last Knwon Good Configiuration.

If that fails to LOAD up reboot and do the same F8 option. This time choose Safe mode, log in as the Administrator and try to run system restore to an earlier date that it worked.I wonder what that "spyware program" was? You didn't say, so it is difficult to ANSWER the question "what did it do". the spyware program was Spybot, but i found out what happened.
Spybot removed system32\ntoskrnl.exe from the computer. and i don't have a win xp cd so i'm pretty much screwed, right?
Right you are on the screwed. but Spybot didn't remove it, so there must be another explanation. Did you do some housecleaning and accidentally delete the wrong file? Do you have a friend with XP that you could get a copy of the file from?

Sorry, I have never seen that behavior with Spybot.if spybot didn't remove it then do i have a worm? What other protection programs and or scans have you run ? ?
Spybot is not designed to deal with Trojans, viruses etc.

patio. Have you tried running SFC /SCANNOW in the Run window?

Solve : Same hard disk model, different capacity ?? ??

Answer»

Hello, friends.

I have 2 identical harddisk installed in a hp desktop Pentium 4 PC. the OS is WinXP Pro SP2. The harddisks model is : Maxtor DiamondMax10, 6B080MO. The spec of this model is 80GB.
After installed and formatted with NTFS, the capacity for 1st hdisk as drive C is 74.5 GB. The 2nd hdisk, also formatted with NTFS as drive E only have capacity 68.4GB.

Why and how to make them the same ..

Thanks for all information.
Do a search at this forum and there are a LOT of issues on this topic. Hope you will find appropriate information.

But SURE someone will answer you soon, also. But do a search yourself first.

Good Luck. The "80GB" is just a rounded number. If they were to give the exact capacity they'd have to make thousands of packaging for each seperate HDD. "NEW IBM 74.5GB HDD!" "New IBM 74.67GB HDD!" etc.

The marketing a 68GB HDD as an 80GB HDD TROUBLES me, though...Do you have anything on that disk? That should be sold as a 70GB HDD.

In any case, the "80" is just a rounded number. I recently got a 128MB stick of RAM that is actually 132MB and I have a 256MB CF card for my digital camera that only holds 245MB. Sometimes you GET lucky, sometimes you don't. =/

My HDD is a 20GB that only holds 19GB. Rounded numbers. Thanks to Mac for your understanding on my question. Also appreciate to others for information sharing.

I formatted the 1st hdisk by HP restore utility CD during OS installation. then format the 2nd from Window disk management.

If this is the problem, how do i solve it ..

Thanks.

Solve : changing mp3s to wav files??

Answer»

Can sound forge do that for me or can i do that through microsoft explorer? i have had trouble figuring out a way to do this. Why, if I may, do you WANT to convert? If you do a google search on mp3 to WAVE converter, you get a lot of hits. I have used a couple of the trial version programs with limited success. I was LOOKING at sound forge and version 8 has the ability of batch converting but the audio studio version 8 does not. My guess would be the studio version will convert one at a time.Sound Forge...Sound Forge...

So sound , so safe go to audiotool.net if you cant find what your lookin for there theres somethin wrong. they are trials but are worth looking at!also if your burning to cd and you use NERO it will transfer them automatically and very quickly

Hello Charki, and welcome to the forum.

Don't really know how to help you, but it might help to know which screensaver you are TRYING to use and how much free-space you have on your hard-drive as 10 GB is quite limited and an inability to run - chkdsk /r - or defrag could have a bearing on the screensaver not running.

XP is decidedly better with 512 MB of RAM even with a 1000 MHz PIII such as I have, so if you can add some more RAM this would be a good idea.

If you click the link below and run through the Cleanup routine then run - chkdsk /r - & - defrag - it might help.

CLEANUP
Hi Mac and Thank you for your answer.
I'm using Win XP logo and the HD is 40 GB not 10 it's my fault of typing. Yesterday I tried tu run the defrag and after analyzing I got a message from the program that it's not needed.
ALSO before we installed Win XP there was 98SE that I upgraded to ME and the screen saver never worked previously, also I installed the WIN XP on my wife Thinkpad 266Mhz , P2 and the screen saver worked well. Could it be something wrong with the computer?
CharkiScreen Saver Won't Start - Check your settings here: Go to Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop or: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
ScreenSaveTimeOut = (set your preference)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

ScreenSaverIsSecure
0 - Screen savers are not password-protected.
1 - All screen savers are password-protected.

Verify that the ScreenSaver has been placed in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 Folder. Make sure that the screensaver starts with " SS " e.g.. if the screensaver name is " pictures " rename it to " sspictures".

Screensaver gets set to None

Check your settings here: Go to Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Scrnsave.exe = C:\Windows\System32\logon.scr

Verify your Time while there as well and choose accordingly: ScreenSaveTimeOut = (set your preference)

Also make sure none of the screensavers are wrapped in double quotes as in: ""c:\windows\system32\screensavername.scr""
And try adding: ss in front of the screensaver name.
Wow! An incredible post from Merlin_2! Thanks!

:)Hi ,
I tried to do what Merlin_2 said to me in his answer on Nov.26, so I open the regedit and clicked the + sign in front of the Control Panel and many folders showed and after the last there is 8 ndifferent screen savers some of them and on the right side it shows (default) REG_SZ (value not set) others it shows Density REG_SZ 50
WarpSpeed REG_SZ 10
I don't know what to do since this is the first time I've seen the Regedit .
I would be more than grateful if anyone can help me and write to me in detail as to what to do .
PS. Due to physical limitations I cannot stay for long time in front of the computer.
Thank you in advance.

Solve : A problem with autoexec.bati hav already triyd to?

Answer»

Hi all ,i have alittle problem usingautoexec.bat , how can i pt ithere anycomands suchas "del c:\test\test.txt" ? I have already tryied to put in autoexec.bat line "del c:\test\test.exe " with world pad ,but nothinh hepents ,when i wans rebooting the pc .
I have already chenged THEVALUE of "parseAutoexec " to "1"
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon) butnothing heppents . Ty for anyhelp.Windows NT - methinks that Autoexec.bat is NOT USED by NT, I think it uses Autoexcec.nt which is in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

I SUGGEST you bring autoexec.nt onto your monitor and have a read

Good luckTy for help ,but it still doesnt work :-/The autoexec.nt file is only processed when you start the MS-DOS prompt PROGRAM (command.com). Do not confuse this with the Command Prompt (cmd.exe) which is initialized by Windows.

If you want code executed when you boot the machine, create a batch file and put a shortcut to the file in the Startup folder.

Hope this helps. yeah ,ty ,it is a good ideia ,but i wanted the bat boots before i log in at my user . Before you logon There is a registry key (actually 7 keys) that handle this situation. Try searching the Microsoft MSDN site for full details.

Sorry to be so vague, but running a batch file to delete a file before login doesn't COME up too often.

Solve : HELP!..... All I get is a blank screen.?

Answer»

Earlier while I was working on my LAPTOP the charger cord came loose, so I went to plug it back in, and my screen went BLANK!
It turned the computer back on, it came up, and said "Compaq" as usual and then the screen went blue, and stayed there, it never came up to the normal screen with icons and everything, just stayed totally blue
Can anybody tell me how to fix this? is my computer totally shot?
Can you please if you can, list the laptop make/or model so we make be able to help you.....thanks for postingIt is a Compaq armada 1750.Musigal.... Have you tried rebooting into the "SAFE" mode to see if it will startup that way .

dl65 Ok, I think I worded my first POST wrong.

I cant do that.
my computer basically goes dead.
Sometimes it doesnt even show a blue screen, it shows it black or grey. It acts as if it were off, only it shows a light color as if it were on, its not just the icons not showing up, it is a totally different screen
I really want to get this fixed if at all possible.Try REMOVING the battery and disconnecting from the mains.

With no power getting to the system hold the power button down for about 20 seconds.

Try connecting back to the mains ONLY.
Switch it back on.
If it loads, reconnect the battery and try booting up again. If this fails with the battery then the battery MAY be faulty. It did not work
Also, above the keyboard, when I turn the computer on, there are some lights that I have never seen before.
One of the lights is a "1", then an "A" and then an arrow pointing down. Do the lights have anything to do with the problem?

Solve : check disk?

Answer»

I am running Win XP. Every time I boot I get a message that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency.
I have deffagged but didn't help.
How can I stop this irritating thing?1ets...Have you tried running a diskscan?

dl65 How was the pc shutdown.............did you turn it off.....or did the pc reboot itself.?Possibly caused by DATA corruption, so run a check on your RAM and run the drive manufacturer's drive-diagnostic DISKETTE over the drive FIRST of all to see if there are any errors.

If all is clear, and you may have to re-seat the RAM modules and make sure that the IDE cables are WELL plugged in, run - chkdsk /r - after backing up any vital data.

XP INFO
If you have run SFC /SCANBOOT you need to type SFC /REVERT in the Run window to stop it checking every time you re-boot, btw.I ran chkdsk and defragged.

Screen appears everytime I boot regardless of shutdown.Take a look at this Registry key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager

Then at - BootExecute REG_MULTI_SZ

The value data should read...

AUTOCHECK autochk *

Solve : I have two of every file on my C:\Drive...I think.?

Answer»

Okay, here's my problem from the beginning to now.

If anyone remembers (doubtful, you guys get 2,453,452,984,256,238 people a week on these forums, I bet) I came in a while ago with some really weird issues. Finding no help, I just formatted and reinstalled Windows, except upgrading to XP this time.

Before formatting, though, I needed to back up some files which I didn't want to delete, download again, and/or I had lost the install disc. My CDR drive no longer works, so I just transferred all of my backed up files to my room mate's computer over the network. It totaled about 2gigs in all.

After formatting, and reinstalling I moved everything back onto my comp and then copied a bunch of his MP3's to my computer. So, I took 5gigs total from his comp (4 gigs total in our collective MP3's and 1gig in other programs I had backed up) plus however large Windows XP is.

Since then I have installed Ragnarokk ONLINE which is 1.5 gigabytes and a few other programs which might add up to a gig if you want to play it safe and round up...way up. So, this is 7.5 gigs plus however large WinXP is. When I checked how much disc space I had left after I had deleted all of those unecessary programs I had before formatting (My disk had 2gigs left before formatting and I only saved 2gigs as I said which left 16gb to be deleted) I only had one gigabyte.

This confused me to no end, but I really couldn't deduce the origin of the extraneous files.

After moving every one of my MP3's onto my playlist I noticed that a lot - if not, all - of them were doubled. I'm not sure if it was indeed all of them, but I do know it was a good majority.

So, I went to check the file path and it was the same for each cloned file. One would read "C:\\Documents and Settings\My Username\My Documents\My Music\Eva Cassidy - Over the Rainbow.mp3" and the second would read the exact same thing. Yet, there were two of them! I didn't dare delete them because I wasn't sure why it read them twice.

So, I just continued on thinking it was a bug in Winamp.

A few days ago a friend of mine PLAYED "Perfect Blue Buildings" by Counting Crows on his guitar during a jam session. I wanted to learn to play it as well so I downloaded it. I couldn't find it in my Shared folder, though, so I searched my HDD for it. I put in the search field "Perfect" and it turned up six A Perfect Circle songs, THREE of which were clones, and "Perfect Memory" by Remy Zero twice. So, now I know it's not Winamp that is messing up. These files are actually on my computer twice, but each is in the exact same place.

So, my three questions are this:

Why is my computer reading each file twice when they have the exact same filepath?

Are they actually on my computer?

Can I delete them safely without compromising the originals?

Thanks for any help and I went to search for this but "Double" turned up "double-click" in a lot of posts, "two" turned up "network" in others, and I don't think "Clone" turned up anything. I'm stumped on other search terms.

Afterthought: If you need my comp info for any reason:

HP Pavilion 8570C (Yes, I know it's old)
455MHz
128MB RAM
20GB HDD
Windows XP Home Edition
999MB free on Drive C (my only HDD)

Been a while since I fragmented since you need 15% free and I can't get 15% free because I don't even know how I have 18gb used up already. >_You cannot have 2 files of the same name, in the same location, on the same partition, on a hdd.
This is 100% immutable.I know which is why I'm so confused...

I search for a file and two pop up. I check their file paths and, sure enough, they are in the same DIRECTORY under the same name and file extension. o.0

I know it's not possible, I'm just relaing information.

See for yourself:

I noticed, though...While it was searching it searched the same areas twice. What I am assuming are the same areas ANYWAY...Well we both know it must be wrongly displaying the same files twice.
Go & check them out with Windows Explorer.I did. I opened the folders to each respective file. Same folder, etc.. Yet my computer displays that there are two files named the exact same thing in the exact same folder which, as we know, isn't possible...It'd at least be followed by (1) if that was the case.

This is just confusing me because I can't think of how I only have 1GB free when I don't even really have anything on this comp. 4GB in MP3's, RO which is 1.5GB, maybe a gigabyte of random programs and files, and then however large WinXP is.

So...What's taking up all of this extra space I should have? It makes sense if my C drive has an exact copy of itself somewhere and I don't know it...But that's not really possible...But then where's all of my free space I should have? X_xI think I'd save the files & do a clean install.
This is just too freaky. I have no idea what you're trying to tell me to do there, Mac. o.0

Are you saying that reverting to an older version of WMP will cause every other program to read only one file on the drive?

I have a second question, though...My HDD is old...REALLY old, like when 20GB was top of the line old. Could thi be affecting my surplus used-up disk space? Plus, I have a gigabyte of disk space set aside for RAM usage, even if this gigabyte is empty, does my computer still show it as used disk space since it is not available for writing?

That would at least make sense of one lost gigabyte. Now I just need to find where the other 8 went (if WinXP is 2.5gb, that is which I doubt).

Solve : DCC WindowsXP?

Answer»

Is anyone familiar with setting up a DCC parallel connection to transfer data from one computer to another?

I set up a connection on my new computer as guest. It is a DCC connection to LPT1 and I have it set to allow an unsecured password, there was no way that I can see to set it for no password.

On my old computer I set up an incoming connection to LPT1 and set it to allow directly connected devices to connect without a password.

When I try to connect, it gets to the POINT where it tries to verify user NAME and password then FAILS to connect and goes into the redial mode. My problem is that I don't know what to use as a password as I have never set up a password on either machine, or how to set it to connect without a password. I have attempted several that I use like the one that I use to connect to the internet but that doesn't work.

I have XP pro on my old computer and XP HOME on the new one.

Any help is appreciated

hello? can sum1 help me plz :-/

Be very specific about your new computer.

Is it actually new or new to you?

What brand, Model? Home built? Operating system?

The members here have to know these things so we know where to steer you.

Some new computers have the recovery system built into it on a hidden partition. If not you will have a system recovery disk that should have came with the computer. There again if its a manufactured computer.

I'm pretty sure to get to the recovery screen you just boot up the computer with the disc in your CD-ROM drive.

If not then it's probably some big DOS thing which I am not familiar with in the least. I don't even know how to go up a folder in DOS...>_>Thats right,

Put the recovery disk in the CDR tray and re-boot and it will open at the System Recovery PAGE asking you what you want to do.

Solve : Outlook - mails don't go into my folders?

Answer»

Hi,
Sorry for bad English, but I desperately NEED HELP. I use MSOutlook Polish edition from many months and it worked fine.
I have well configured MSOutlook mail account when I test it everything GOES fine, but something is wrong now. When I push Send/RECEIVE (i dont know if it is good translate - using polish version) E-mails are copying from server but not into my folders (I don't see them).
There is over 400 messages on server and every time they try to get on my computer but they Can't.
Have you setup any blocked email addresses?

They could possibly be spam or contain viruses and so your system wont download them for security reasons.

Do you get any messages at all? Most mails that I must get are business (no-spam) e-mails.

I can't receive any.
I don't believe that is a known feature of the Polish Edition. Fed, what do you think?Check your settings under message rules.
Is Poland still a country?Toom...... I have just reviewed the setup for MS Outlook and I think that you have overlooked something when you reconfigured Outlook......... "I use MSOutlook Polish edition from many months and it worked fine." ............
So what changed ? ....I'm quessing it was something you did or didnt do when you started MAKING changes ...... Remember the old saying ......."If it ain't broke don't fix it "
Try and put it back the way it was or even better Create a new mail account in Outlook ......( be sure the entries you use are correct )
The program works the same regardless of the language .

Solve : Renewing my IP address?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I had problems before with my internet logging off it seemed everyday for a little while. It would give me some error message about another IP on my address or something like that. Well maybe this doesn't mean anything, but when I right CLICK on my connection icon and check the network connection details status, it always tells me that say lease obtained 12/21/2005 3:30 AM, and then lease expires at 12?22/2005. To me it seems that everyday at the time when it expires it gives me these problems. Can someone explain this to me or tell me why my lease expires everyday? I live in an apartment w/ 2 FRIENDS and we have a cable router and we each have wireless cards to connect to this router if that information is important or not.if i were u i wud phone up the company who u GOT broadband from... they always fix my internet problems

[glb]FireChaser[/glb]What kind of router are you connected to? Was it SUPPLIED by your ISP? Your computer should talk to the router and the router to your ISP. If you are getting a 24 hour lease, it should be coming from your router, not your ISP. Now, if your ISP is giving you a 24 hour lease, that will be negotiated between the ISP server and your router and technically should be invisible to your computer. You need ACCESS to your router to see if it is set up to renew the IP every 24.If you have access to the routers configuration, lease time should be set to 0. You will still see the lease time as 24 hours but a setting of 0 is esssentially a no expiring lease. It will renew if you shut down and restart your computer but should automatically renew otherwise. You can also use ipconfig from the command prompt to release or renew the IP. ipconfig/release all will release everything and ipconfig/renew all will renew everything. If you are using win9x, you can use start/run/winipcfg and click your option with the mouse.

Solve : Explorer Folder Help!?

Answer»

My hard disk at work consists of many hundreds of client folders, each with subfolders for each year... "2002", "2003", etc.

As we are coming to the end of this year, it is now necessary to add a "2006" folder to each client. As there are far too many to manually do in a SHORT period of TIME. Is there a way that anybody knows, in any language, that would go through each folder and add this new folder to each client.

Any information on how to do this would be GREATLY appreciated and any DONATION samples of code, if simple, would be warmly welcomed.
Try writing a batch file. Check for INSTRUCTIONS here.

Solve : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000A?

Answer»

I have searched everywhere for a solution and this seems to be an ongoing and growing problem for me. I can't figure it out so I am turning to the experts, please help if you can!

The Blue Screen stop error which appears randomly is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
0x0000000A (0xVaries, 0x000000FF, 0x00000000, 0x80563DB)

This occurs on a Dell Dimension 8100 running XP that was not recently upgraded and that had no recent hardware or software installed.

Over time the BSOD appears more frequently nearly every hour or so now with no specific rhyme or reason.

From what I have read, I know it may be a hardware or software problem from but suspect hardware because I removed all unsigned drivers.

Since this began happening the disk is now operating outside NORMAL parameters or so it says during most boots.

Do I replace the RAM, the power supply, the disk, everything, or just trash the whole computer?

Please help! What should I do or what other information can I provide?

Thanks from one really really frustrated guy named ErikHi Erik. Being a regular, I see this often, and have experienced it myself. It is quite rare to see that software is causing this problem, especially if you have not installed/changed any of that recently. As it says on the blue screen, this screen may be caused by failing hardware. I know blue screens are vague, but nevertheless, it seems like a hardware ISSUE. Have you installed ANY new hardware or software recently (Yes, even something as simple as a mouse)? When did this start? How old is your Dell? Have you installed anything new to the computer prior to this error? Also, becuase it would take way to long to explain how to test every piece of hardware, I would recommend taking it in for a professional to have a look. Usually this will not cost too much for them just to look... (Or let's hope ) Get back with us if you have any updates or questions.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame,

Thanks for the fast reply. There were no hardware additions prior to the error beggining to occur, not even a mouse.

The error began with the frequency of about once per day or two in mid-November. My wife said she had seen the BSOD maybe two or three times before then, perhaps multi-weekly or monthly. Still no hardware then, not even a new thumbdrive. I did forget that about that time a friend did install Zone Alarm firewall in mid-November, but I promptly removed it when I saw the crashes.

The computer is three years old and I opened it up and vacuumed out quite a bit of accumulated dust after the problem began. Maybe the dust accumulation on fans and airways could have caused too much heat and fried something?

My remaining questions are:
Is it worth trying to fix now that the hard drive says it is working outside normal parameters? Will I need a new hard drive?
Do you think I should try to replace the RAM or powersupply myself, if so, which first? Is it probable to be some other hardware or usually just RAM and PS?

Thanks again, Erik
Try it in safe mode, that will ELIMINATE most software problems.
There is also software that you can download to test your hard drive. I've never had a need to use it but others here can explain it to you.
There is also software that you can download to test your ram. What I recommend is just paying the small fee to have someone look at it. Once they tell you what's wrong, and if you need replacement parts, come back and let us know what it is. We might be able to help with the question of you installing it yourself. Depending on what the problem is, the cost for replacement can go up or down. We wish you the best, and keep in touch.

[glb]Flame[/glb]The Stop 0xA message indicates that a kernel-mode process or driver attempted to access a memory location to which it did not have permission, or at a kernel interrupt request level (IRQL) that was too high. A kernel-mode process can access only other processes that have an IRQL lower than, or equal to, its own. This Stop message is typically due to faulty or incompatible hardware or software.

Possible Resolutions:

A Stop 0xA message might occur after installing a faulty device driver, system service, or firmware. If a Stop message lists a driver by name, disable, remove, or roll back the driver to correct the problem. If disabling or removing drivers resolves the issues, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools.

A Stop 0xA message might also be due to failing or defective hardware. If a Stop message points to a category of devices (video or disk adapters, for example), try removing or replacing the hardware to determine if it is causing the problem.

If you encounter a Stop 0xA message while upgrading to Windows XPl, the problem might be due to an incompatible driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup. To avoid problems while upgrading, simplify your hardware configuration and remove all third-party device drivers and system services (including virus scanners) prior to running setup. After you have successfully installed Windows XP, contact the hardware manufacturer to obtain compatible updates.

You said at first no changes, and then began mentioning a few including "but suspect hardware because I removed all unsigned drivers. " and then mentionedsomething in your last post.

YOur hard drive may be dying. That message about operating outside of normal parameters, do you get that at boot up, as with a SMART drive error? Have you run the Dell diagnostics on it? (Free from their website!)

After that I would repartition the drive, reformat and reinstall Windows if no hardware errors found.
Per Flame's suggestion I have scheduled an appointment for the hardware to be examined. They can take my CPU after January 1 and they will look at it for free if I can't learn anything in the meantime.

In the meantime, does anyone know the name of the software to test the hard drive and RAM alluded to by FED? Is it free?

I downloaded Dell Diagnostics, but can not get it to run properly as I can't find how to have the computer boot only to the dos prompt without windows. I used to know this years ago, but have forgotten. Does it identify hardware faults or just software?

I liked GX1_Man's suggestion of finding where the 0XA message points to, but I don't know how to do that. I can read the address, but have no idea how to tell where it is pointing to. There is no filename on the blue screen.

The message I now get on boot is: WARNING: Dell's disk monitoring system has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controlling is operating outside of normal SPECIFICATIONS... (F1 to continue)

Lastly, I was confusing by saying that I removed unsigned drivers. I did this using sigverif.exe to identify those unsigned drivers and then placing them in a separate folder. They were all for devices installed years ago that had been working fine. The one software I am aware that was installed around the time the problem intensified was ZoneAlarm, but I had forgotten as it was the first thing I removed when I noticed the trouble. No hardware has been added.

Thanks for all the help to date! ErikHave you tried booting using "last Known Good Configuration"?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Why can't you get into safe mode?
Last known good config will remove all windows Sps & updates. Thanks,

I tried booting using last known good configuration a week or so back. I picked a time some 6 months ago that was on a list it provided me the option to pick from. After a long time it ame back with the reply that it could not boot in that configuration or something of the sort.

Now, if I choose boot in last known good configuration, it just appears to boot regularly.

I can boot in safe mode, safe with networking, or safe with DOS prompt and all work fine although with the expected goofy look, but I can't use the computer to hook to the internet in those cases. I left it in safe mode for a day and ran virus and spyware scans without a crash, but there is not much use I could really give it without the internet. It needs to be looked at by a professional. If we could see this computer face-to-face, we could probably fix it, but it's near impossible to do over messaging...

Solve : "All Programs" option runs off of screen?

Answer»

When attempting to run All PROGRAMS from the Start menu, the display runs off the screen so that the third file is barely seen.

What can be done to allow all programs to be seen on the screen or to be able to scroll to them?

thank you. What is the resolution of your screen?
And what OS are you running?I'm sorry - I usually include that stuff.

I'm running a resolution of 1024x768 on a Viewsonic P225f screen

Also MS Win XP serv. pk. 2

bullwinkle8........ Wow if your at 1024 x 864 now and can only view 2 sections ....you must have a huge number of apps INSTALLED .........
Try changing your screen size to 1152 x 864 and see if that will allow them all to fit .
What size is your monitor?
BTW is this something that has just evolved or did it just occur ....?

dl65 Thanks - that makes it all fit but everything's so TINY! I've GOT 4 columns of programs and it's been off the screen for a long time now.

My monitor is the largest you can get 22" if I recall.

BTW, one final question - is it possible to expand the size of the msconfig program when I'm trying to change the Startup tab? You can't expand that window.

Thank you very much.Do you need to get your eyes tested?
(Serious comment based on what you have said Bullwinkle)Sorry, that's a lol!

I wear computer glasses for just this situation. Sure, I can see it - just not used to it being so small.

Any idea about the msconfig/Setup window?bullwinkle8....... If you go up to the top of the msconfig box , put the cursor on the top bit and left click and hold the click ..then drag the box over until you can see the startup tab.

hope this helps

dl65 No, I can see the startup tab fine.

The problem is in the size of the window. It's too small to see everything and I have to continually scroll left and right while expanding each section (Startup Item, Command, Location). I'd like to see all sections completely at the same time.

Is that possible?

Solve : page fault error?

Answer»

how do I correct a page fault error in non paged area and what does this error mean.It caused a blue screen that made me reboot in SAFE mode and delete the latest program that I installed to get back my computer. the program I installed was system mechanic 6,I haved USED system mechanic for years this upgraded version crashes the computer after install and reboot. thank you Terry curio....Was System mechanic 6.1 purchased or D/L from some site ....it almost sounds like it may be a registration issue ...... iolo technologies may have added to discourage piracy ....or there are remnants of a previously installed version which are creating the issue.

dl65 I purchased it from Iolo, have versions 4-6 have used it for a LONG time.it could be remnants from version 5,I contacted them they seem to keep updateing the version no's each time they do they answer my request for help with a new version to try.each time it is the same blue screen. the internet has lots of people with the same problem as mine.I can't even load and run properly the older versions since I installed the sysmech6 from disk.it has changed something in my system.was hopeing that someone had an answer.thanks for the time. Terrycurio.....I have been using System Mechanic Pro V 5.5.1.0
for the past year so I am more than familiar with it .......
I THINK what you must do is .....Remove all bits and pieces of the previous versions from your machine ......in fact , I would remove the newest version as well .......then do a manual search of the registry and remove all entries which are still in there ....and there are probably lots of them. Then and only then ....reinstall the current version and I believe things will be ok. If you don't know how to do a manual registry search , let me know and I'll walk you through it .

dl65 http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.phpcurio.... Here's how to manually edit the registry.

Manual Registry Search

1. click start

2. click run

3. In the Run box …type regedit
4. Click ok

5. Registry editor will open

6. click Edit from registry editor functions

7. select Find

8. when the find box opens….

9. In the field where it says …Find what …enter what your looking for …….example ……. System mechanic….. then click the find next button.

10. A entry will be displayed ……check to be certain its what you want …..then right click on it and choose… delete …..and its gone .

11. Now go back and click on Edit on the registry editor again ….system mechanic will still be showing in the box …….. click find next again …..and again delete the next entry highlighted …….. Repeat this until you see the message displayed ……Finished searching the registry …….

12. Now click ok and your done .

Note……you may find a number of entries …….just be sure to remove them all.
…… It is always a good idea to create a backup of the registry before you start .

This should help you .

Solve : Help...please!!?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I am RELATIVELY computer literate, but I have a problem. YESTERDAY I was playing a game and my computer locked up. That's nothing new it does it every once in a while when the game gets laggy. It's a custom built computer (from Cyberpower systems). I don't think the specs are important. I had to push the reset button because it was completely locked up (Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work). When it went to reboot I got a message "Disk boot failure. Insert disk and press enter". I tried to boot in safe mode but it didn't work. I figured "great I have a virus, just what I need the week before finals". I put the disk that was sent with the machine in and hit enter (I figured that it would really suck to LOSE all my data, but at least my computer would run). It came up with a blue Windows setup screen and started doing its thing. Then it got to a point where it asked me about partitioning hard drives and to select from this list of drives all of which said something about not being detected. When I hit any button a different blue screen comes up saying something to the effect of the computer has performed a fatal error and windows is shutting it down.

Please help me if you can. I have only had this computer for about 4 months and Tech support has been less than supportive. I am hoping there is some way to save the data, but if not I would at least LIKE to get the computer back to running.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated,
AndyYou get a boot disk failure message, your system doesn't recognize your hard drive and you can't reformat or partition your boot drive?

My wild guess is you've got a bad hard drive. Also possible you have a bad or intermittent drive cable/connectors, or your controller's gone south.

Even a custom built PC like yours should still be covered by some kind of warranty, but if not, try another hard drive in your system. Or, try your current hard drive in another PC. If you're lucky, you might be able to recover some data if your old drive will work as a slave.

DellThanks for the input.

The computer is supposed to have a 3 year warranty, but the customer service has been kind of difficult. One of the service techs is supposed to call me at 4pm this afternoon, hopefully they can give me some more insight.
I would stick to the 'warranty route' until you've EXHAUSTED your options. Anything you do to fix a possible hardware failure would certainly void it.

DellIf your computer has a floppy drive, then find another XP computer and copy the hidden ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files to a floppy which you have FULL formatted on an XP computer. (NOT a boot floppy, just a straight format.)

The boot.ini file should read the same as yours so you may have to edit it to read as follows...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

OR...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

If you have installed the Recovery Console on your boot drive there will be an additional line...

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Put this floppy in your A: drive and start the computer. It should (I hope) get you to the main drive.

If it is just HANGING then follow this CLEANUP routine, especially where the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is concerned.

I WANT to WIPE my hard drive clean. Is it possible to just copy the 'Windows' folder on the C drive onto a DVD, then, with a clean hard drive load that file on and make it work. If so, how do you transfer the file onto the clean disk. And if not, how do I start a fresh without an XP CD??You need a legal copy of XP, and this is to install it as WELL as to activate it.Unless you GET a multiple-use Disk which i aquired. Though i havn't actually used it yet....Well if I just copy the windows that i've had on my computer for a while can I, I'm getting rid of EVERYTHING from my hard drive, my computer didnt come with a XP CD, sorta wierd to buy XP when i already have it. Well, if there was a way to delete everything but the windows files then that could work, but I dont know what i need to keep. You can buy W2K for 'next to nothing' and your computer will run better too.

Solve : backup my mails?

Answer» HI there,

I was wondering if ANYONE would be able to tell me or at least check if i do it right. I'd like to store my emails in the format of .pst as backup and like to be able to retrieve it back again sometimes LATER.

This is how i did it

- open up outlook 2003
- select the folder i'd like to back up, then
- file -> archive -> browse the appropriate location -> done

However, as archiving folder is created, it also appears on the list on the outlook if you notice as "archive folder". Is that normal?

I'd be more than happy to welcome any SUGGESTIONS from you.

Thank you very much in advanceYou need to actually use the Import/Export feature.

Click on File> Export> then choose to back up to another file or folder> choose your .pst format and then choose a location to save it to.Hi, PCWizards

Thank you for your help.

I've actually tried it that way but then it'd ask to enter password and other things after you have selected the file format you want to save mails as i.e. in my case, .pst

I just want to know if that's normal. If i put in the password, is that mean that the next time i want to retrieve it, it'd prompt me for a password before i can open mails to read them.

Thank you in advance

Solve : .EXE and .MSI files dissapeared ??

Hey Guys,
First of all my computers Hard Drive is divided into 2 partitions the C: 150GB for Windows and Software Installs. and the D: 50GB Personal files like downloaded programs, backups, movies, songs, pcitures, documents, ETC. WELL i decided to upgrade to Windows XP Professional 64 bit. So I restarted formated the C: and installed Win XP x64 fine. I went to the desktop for the first time and all i did was create my User Account and configure my home network. I rebooted went into my computer and opne up the D:. The first thing i noticed was that all of the fodlers hadbeen set back to default and that my personal icons had gone . Then as i looked AROUND all of the folders i noticed all of the executable files were gone .msi and .exe:eek: All of my videos and songs and documents were still there, as well as the cabs and readmes for programs but there was no .EXE or .MSI to launch them. I noticed the FILE size had reduced from 32GB to 21.7GB but the weird thing is that the partition still said 32GB used. Its as if the data is there, but its invisible or not showing up

My specs:
Pentium 4 640 3.2Ghz HT 64 bit

Geforce 6600GT 128MB
Pioneer DVR-110D

Solve : Virus Won't Let Me Boot/Reformat?

Answer»

(Wow... Seeing all these new topics makes me feel bad about posting another one for you guys... well Anyway!)

My Specs:
AMD ATHLON XP
Windows XP SP2
512 MB RAM
1.9GHz
That's about all I know on Specs...

Hey guys, it's me again. I've got another delima for you guys. Unlike last time, I feel that there is more hope for me actually getting this problem solved. I want to reformat my C drive. Good news though! I backed up all the important data I needed, so no holds barred! But there's a problem...

Some Virus won't let me Reformat, or Boot Windows for that matter. lemme explain:

Here's what happened:
I got a slight batch of malware and the sort by trying one of those f***ing p2p programs. I uninstalled it emidiately (Kazaa lite... or so it claims to be). I had "Avast! Antivirus/Firewall" installed at the time, feel free to suggest anything else you know might be better. Since then I have been using Spybot S&D to help fight the buggy bastards. It diddn't help much. something was "eating" my C drive but I could not pinpoint what it was. Everytime I use ANY virus scannning software and the virus is discovered, it shuts my system down. Like a maniac hiding in a building with a bomb in his hand. It got to the point where I was LUCKY to see my desktop for half an hour a day, total. But since I already tried to reinstall Windows, there's no chance of seeing my desktop anymore. The reinstall attempt was unsuccessful because the Disk is slightly damaged.

Here's what I know:
One of my Hard drives have been making weird clicking and "myip myip myip" noises since the attack. The clicking noises sound like the hard drive(s) were being turned off and on over and over in like 2 second intervals, as where the "myips" are in half-second intervals. Sometimes both noises are mixed together. I'm not sure which one. I have two IDE drives and one SATA, and I made sure they were all plugged in correctly. Every once in a while, one of them won't be detected. I checked the heatsink again, it's still secure. Whatever the virus is, it sure dosent want me to boot up Windows or reformat. Whenever I try, it either freezes, restarts, or shuts down. I'm still trying to locate a smooth disc to use for the reinstallation.

Questions:
Am I able to just reformat without using the disk? How would I go about doing that?
Know any good way to remove or cover small scratches and abrasions from a CD? I'm kinda broke, so I can't exactly go buy a new copy of XP...
Can a Virus really shut you off in the process of reinstalling Windows? What else could be causing that?

My goal is simple: NUKE my C: drive!! Bomb it and whatever Virus is on it egatin my system!! I can't ever get enough time before the random shutdown to scan my other drives... I took everything that's important to me, and it's all clean anyway. Again, any and all suggestions are HIGHLY appreciated. Now let's nuke us a Virus! >:D
BA-BOOM!!

Thanks again, guys!Flipz.... First a few questions .....
How old is you system ?
Do you happen to have a floppy drive installed . If you do , you can format using that drive .

Have you removed all non required software from your machine , using the add/remove feature .
Have you manually cleaned the registry for remnants of ......Kazza Lite and do you have any other P2P apps installed .
Have you run M/S antispyware on your PC ?
Have you run Ewido on it ?
Have you tried isolating the other drives and just try to scan the drive containing the O/S

Having a virus , if thats what it is , doesnt necessarily REQUIRE formatting .

let us know

That clik, clik, clik, sound is the sound of a HDD getting ready to take a dump...double check your backups and get prepared to replace that drive.

I've had it for about 2 years. Custom built.
Yes I have a floppy drive installed.
Yes all extra baggage software was removed, but some things kept coming back (malware and the sort).
No I diddnt know a registry clean was required for the kazaa crap, and I have(had) Shareaza installed, but it's completely virus/crapware free.
No, diddnt know M/S had an antispyware
No, never heard of Ewido
Yes, The other drives were fine. They are disconnected now.

And yes, it does require formatting in my case. whatever it is/was, SCREWED up my windows system files and damaged Windows to a point where I can't stay logged in for more than 5 minutes. I would rather have went through and backed up my things to prepare for a reformat, than risk using another so-called "antivirus" and getting my computer and all of the data I would NOT have backed up permenantly destroyed... again.

And if it's not a virus, and the Drive is about to be destroyed like Patio said, then at least my things are safely bailed out of the drive. It has occurred to me that I could pull off a SUCCESSFUL reformat if I had a copy of XP that was not damaged. Let me see how that goes. In the meantime if I do not come across a clean disk, you guys can explain how reformatting with a floppy works.

...or I can look on Google after I've tried my luck with the disk. Google is my friend.

Thanks.Flipz...If you can't start windows.......the only other thing that comes to mind is if you remove the affected hard drive and install it as a slave on another pc and then format it on that pc .......then put it back in yours and set your 1st boot to cd rom , put your xp disk in the drive and reboot ........the xp cd is bootable and it should load.

What is antispyware by MicroSoft .......It's a very good aggressive tool......
Overview
Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

This app isn't a replacement for a good antivirus program......

Ewido.......
This tool will find things that few others will.

Antivirus programs and firewalls often protect insufficiently against the frequently arising threats of the newest generation. More trojans, worms, dialers, hijackers, spyware, and keyloggers are being spread everyday. These malicious programs make it possible for aggressors to not only delete and destroy your data but to pass it on over the Internet without encryption. In the meantime, hackers are able to use Webcams to tap your privacy. With the availability of broadband connections, file structures can be SPIED and duplicated. Ewido Security Suite supplements existing safety systems and becomes a complete solution, because only a complete safety system is effective. We offer protection in real time against more than 67,000 threats and our malware database is updated daily.

Note ......this is a fully functional 14 day trial

The noise your HD is making may well indicate its done,
but before running out and buying a new one I'd try plugging it in on another pc (as a slave ) and wiping it clean .....if it won't wipe ...then get a new one ...BTW what make is it ?

Hope this helps you

dl65 Try the WXPBOOT.EXE bootdisk...

XP INFOWell guys, the reformat was a success! The drive was wiped clean, and I dont hear anymore funny noises! The only remaining problem is installing Windows. I tried to proceed installing Windows after the format, but the disk was damaged, so there were 8 files that could not be copied from the disk. When Windows tries to start, I get a stop message (shown further below). The missing files are:

advapi32.dll - The one getting the stop message
adsldpc.dll
adslp.dll
adsmsext.dll
adsnt.dll
adsnw.dll
agentmpx.dll
agentsvr.exe

I think all I need to do now is find either a clean disk, or a way to find/install those components using a floppy. The stop message I got is still on my screen as we speak. It hasn't shut down or restarted at random yet, and it's been on for hours! This could be good news! I may not have to replace the Hard drive! Here's what the stop message said, word by word:

STOP: c0000135 {Unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because ADVAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I should shut it off now
If anyone knows a way to use floppies to install those components, let me know. Knowing me, I'll never see a clean Windows XP Disk again I what way is the XP CD damaged, scratched or cracked? Cracks are usually fatal whereas some scratches can be repaired.

Does it have SP2 or can you make a new CD by slipstreaming SP2?

Can you simply make a copy of your CD to a good quality CDR?

Have you tried very gently washing the CD?

NOT if there are cracks though!!!

About 15 percent of the CD (mostly the outer rim) is covered in small scratches and abrasions. No cracks.

I do not believe it has SP2, I'm not sure what slipstreaming is, but I planned onupdating to SP2 after I fixed the original installation.

And as far as copying it, I doubt it's possible in it's condition, and I havent found anyone who has another copy.

So tell me, how exactly can i repair it? Is there a certain way to wash the CD? Certain chemicals? Certain cloths? Certain temperatures? Every so-called "CD cleaner" I've ever bought isn't worth a lousy five cents. If you have the registration info from your original install any XP CD will work...just borrow another from a friend.

That kinda poses as the entire problem. Nobody I know has one. They're either broken completely, cracked, or they're still trying to find someone else who can give them a duplicate. You can use water and a soft cloth to clean a cd. NEVER wipe the cd around it circumference, always wipe from the center outward to the edge. A lens cleaning cloth and solution is also good.Ok I have the cloth, but what is this Solution you speak of?... and where can I get it? Because I HIGHLY doubt that water is ever gonna do the job.

Solve : Internet drop out very often?

Answer»

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me here. I have a computer that access to the internet via cable modem. What've been happening is that since early this morning, the internet connection has been dropping out every now and then for about 20 times already. I rang up the cable modem ISP and they said it looked FINE on their end (not sure if that's true). don't know what to do?

However, i think i have to tell you this too. I also have a VPN box attached to the network.

This is how it's set up.
From the cable modem, a network cable's hooked up to the VPN box that acts as a router and then a laptop was connected to the VPN box. This setup has been there for a while. Hence, i don't quite believe if this may be to due to the VPN box. I believe the VPN connection also RELIES upon the internet connection too. But who knows it might be due to the box.

Any help is greatly APPRECIATED. Thank you in advance
Thank you in advanceAre you by any chance USING a cable SPLITTER to also connect a television for some free channels?Best way to see if it involves the VPN box is to take it completely out of the loop...do a direct connect to the existing machine and see what happens.

patio. Hi guys,

Thank you for your reply.

Are you by any chance using a cable splitter to also connect a television for some free channels?
No, Joleen, i don't think so. But why?

Best way to see if it involves the VPN box is to take it completely out of the loop...do a direct connect to the existing machine and see what happens.

Yes, Patio. That's what i'm going to experiment today if the problem persists.

Thank you so much for your help and advisesMore| data.........on your problem

Solve : lost folders?

Answer»

okeefed.....You never mentioned which folders have disappeared or what was in them ....that might be a clue .
how many user accounts are on that pc ?

dl65
SORRY DL, I couldn't HELP myself.

BTW okeefed, is your computer free of viruses & malware? We have 5 users and one of the users has completely lost his 'my documents' folder. from my area I have lost a couple of folders, they appear to be random. I have McAfee and I run the windows newest anti virus which didn't reveal anything. I am suffering popups though which leads me to believe I have an invader SOMEWHERE. What can I do ? I've run SPYWARE, antivirus, both of which are McAfee, and are udated daily. Could these folders and all their contents been deleted forever?

V grateful

Diokeefed......Lets confirm that we don't have pests in residence. Do you have xp as the operating system. If you do I would like you to download ......antispyware beta ... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

and Ewido Security .....
http://www.download.com/Ewido-Security-Suite/3000-8022_4-10326287.html

and CCleaner......
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Make sure your user account has all the admin privledges .

Now ......the first thing to do is turn off system restore .....( pests like to hide in there )

Reboot the pc into the Safe mode.

Run a full scan with CCleaner ......(both CLEANER and ISSUES)

Run a full scan with your anti virus.

Run a full scan with M/S antispyware beta.

Run a full scan with Ewido

Remove anything which was found by any of these programs.
Then we can say that the pc is clean.

let us know how you make out .

Solve : Fried XP Home, now can't recover or install?

Answer»

*sighs* HP support stinks. Let me just start there. They didn't help me one iota and were gone before I could read him the riot act for reading me the same documentation I had used twice already to attempt a recovery.. but anyway.

This weekend my spare PC decided to lose some of it's DLLs. Knowing the the PC was full of adware and other unknown crap because of ex-roommates I opted for using the system recovery CDs and doing a full format and reinstall.

It went through all 7 CDs and then tells me it can't create the USER partition and gives up.

HP documentation indicates that happens because the system recovery partition still exists... EXCEPT my system recovery partition is FUBAR as well, it runs, gives me a BLUE screen and a mouse pointer (not the blue-screen-of-death, but the windows blue) and just stay there eternally.

I tried putting in my WIndows XP OS CD but it doesn't seem to recognize it at all and just kicks out to the floppy.

At the request of the moron-support-guy I created a DOS boot disk but from there I can't do a FDISK or a format.

What I need to know is:
- Is it possible to format the recovery partition and remore the partition in the state the computer is in now? (no O/S, only bootable with boot disk and Recovery CDs) If so, how?
- Is there another way to get Windows installed or the recovery program to finish?

Anything you can provide in the way of useful information is appreciated.

Thanks,

-= Tara =-Try setting your cdrom as 1st boot device in bios then booting to your xp disk.Hi Tara, Let me make quite sure on this point first of all. You have the seven recovery CDs and you do NOT need the recovery partition to stay on the drive. Right?

Then try the boot re-director bootdisk to save you changing your boot sequence and try booting to the XP CD directly so that you can partition and format the drive stopping the install and then using the 7 recovery CDs you have.

I would recommend that you make a copy of those 7 CDs on good quality CDRs whenever you can and keep them safe. The recovery partition hasn't ever worked on that PC so it's wasted space as far as I'm concerned. So no, I don't need that partition any more. It's USELESS the way that it is.

I have all 7 CDs. I have guarded them with my life since the misery that it took to get them in the first place is something I don't wish to repeat.

I am not sure what the "boot redirector" bootdisk is. I have a MS-DOS boot floppy that it will pick up on and read just FINE. It also picks up CD1 of the recovery series fine but it won't read the Windows CD I have. I am starting to wonder if it's the CD I've got...

Thank you for your patience. I've dealt with some stubborn computers before but this one is stretching my patience. And to think the only reason I'm doing this at all is because my main PC's power supply fried and it's not coming back to me for 2-3 weeks! That's too long to be on a laptop!Quote

It also picks up CD1 of the recovery series fine but it won't read the Windows CD I have. I am starting to wonder if it's the CD I've got.

Just make sure that the CD is really clean. I very gently wash them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution and gently dry them with a clean linen cloth. This can often help.

Making a copy can help too.

Have you checked the holograms to see if the CD you have is absolutely genuine?

Solve : Used Dell on a Compaq?

Answer»

A relative tried to install Microsoft Office from a Dell Setup disk onto a Compaq. This resulted in a system with no Office, and no modem drivers. I tried to use the Compaq boot/ setup disks, but it would not boot from them. Is there a way to completely remove the Dell setup and reinstall the Compaq? I tried to call customer support but since the computer is over a year old they wanted $$$ for help.
If this is in the wrong forum I apologize.
ThanksSo, you're saying the Compaq booted from a Dell CD but won't boot from the original Compaq CD that came with it? Hmmm....Yes, and at first the screen says COMPAQ and then goes into a Dell-like setup.Quote from: Orionlongbow on April 03, 2007, 10:05:59 PM

Yes, and at first the screen says COMPAQ and then goes into a Dell-like setup.
So, the computer does, indeed, RESPOND to the COMPAQ CD? That's not what I UNDERSTAND you to say in your previous post when you said it would not "boot" from it.Sorry, no. The start up process just starts with the word Compaq, but if you have a Compaq setup disk in the drive it says "can not boot from this disk"Have you tried system restore? I have had success many times when my friend goofs up her machine. Is that COMPAQ CD damaged? Do you see SCRATCHES on it? Can you view the contents of if via Windows Explorer?

In your first post, you mentioned MS Office. Since when is MS Office on a Dell Setup disk? I think it's not. If they had Office installed on their original Dell computer, they probably had a separate CD for it. As far as I can tell the disks are undamaged and I can the contents in Explorer. As to why they thought this would work, who knows? Maybe I am doing a system restore wrong. But it goes back to the Dell setup.Of COURSE, it does. Using the Dell Setup disk probably formatted, i.e. erased, the hard drive and then did a fresh installation of Windows and whatever other software that was on that Dell CD.Since it seems I can't use the Compaq disks to do a freash install can I erase the HD and start over with the Compaq, or should I dig out an old HD of mine and throw it in the Compaq machine?
