ANY WAY TOO TAKE OFF THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT?

UGHH.. I HATE THIS!

ONLY MY COMPUTER!

PLEASE PLEASE ANY IDEASS!?!?!ginamarie...... If you are the only ONE on the pc ...then you must have full admin rights ........would that be correct ?
There must be a admin on the machine .....and your it .
Is it the site that your trying to d/l from that asking for this INFO ?

dl65 Without knowing OS , I would suggest to go Users under Computer Management Tree (right click on My Computer and then choose Manage) and DISABLE Administrator account.

yes, you must have admin rights to perform some functions...
May be you want to disable user OPTIONS SCREEN and let you directly into system?...
Since you need those admin rights to do some things, why don't you rename your admin account to something more pleasing?

Solve : PAGE SIZE?

Answer»

I have to set the same page size of a pdf file to a doc file (in a data conversion)

i.e. I have to see the size of a page in the pdf file and set the same CORRESPONDING page size in the doc file

How to know the size of a page in a pdf file??

I have read the help file of adobe acrobat reader, but has not FOUND it.

Iam using adobe acrobat reader 6.0.

2) How to set the same page margin in the doc file as that of pdf file? shouvik:

What program are you using to convert the files to PDF? Are you converting Word documents to PDF?I am not using any software for this conversion.

i.e. no software is allowed, everything is to be done by myself.

I am converting pdf to doc ( not from doc to pdf)

here the pdf document is the master file.

It is written like this:

Page size of doc file should be same as in .pdf file. If Page EXCEED then USE 22"x22" Page size.

Total no. of pages in the the .doc file should be same as that of master file ( .pdf file).[there are 365 pages in the master file)

Page margin of doc file should be visually same as in Master file(.pdf file).
If no software is allowed, then how do you do it? Retyping everything?I am not retyping everything.

I can copy the entire pdf into doc through copy-paste, but after that the matching by seeing the pdf docement (space, font size, line spacing etc) is to be done manually

:-/You need to purchase software from Adobe to convert the PDF to Word and KEEP the formatting.

Solve : Some help please.?

Answer»

Ok, my friend needs a computer, for the most part we are doing animations with Macromedia Flash and Photo editing with Adobe PHOTOSHOP Elements. He does not have job (he’s 14), so he needs a very low priced computer. My computer was in the $300 range and is a very good computer, high ram, strong processor, large hard drive. So I would gladly tell him to buy this computer, but the exact model is not on the MARKET anymore. He asked me to find a computer for him because he isn't very good at computers; I started to search and got uneasy about my judgments because I wasn’t familiar with them and I don't want him to buy a computer that doesn’t run well with the programs we NEED or just doesn't perform well. So I'm going to list some programs he will probably use on the computer and hopefully someone can give me a good model in the $300 range, I know that isn't very much money, but that is what he will have to work with. Thanks.

Macromedia Studio

Adobe Photoshop Elements

Microsoft Office

Possibly Fruti Loops 5

These are not all of the programs that will be used on the computer, but will be some of the larger ones.
Stephen:

Look for a computer repair shop that sells new and used PCs. They may have several good used Pentium III systems that were traded in for Pentium IV systems. Make sure they have a good warranty on the computer you purchase and ask about their return policy. Since you are unfamiliar with the hardware available, go with a used system made by a reputable manufacturer (e.g., HP/Compaq, Gateway/eMachines, or Dell).
Ok, ILL pass on the idea to him. Thanks alot!No PROB.

Blessings to you,

Solve : Problem with digital camera and ME?

Answer»

Hello...I am trying to help a friend who has a problem connecting her Kodak DX3500 digital camera to her Windows ME machine. She had had the computer reformatted and she reinstalled the original software that came with the camera. However, the computer does not recognize the camera...I assume it's a driver problem because the camera is recognized by my XP system and works just fine. I also tried using another camera imaging program, Cam2PC, with no luck on her PC, worked fine with XP, which really makes me think it's a driver problem. I download a driver from the Kodak support site, K35v0101.fw but Windows is looking for a file with an .inf extension. Also, the LIST of cameras on ME does not include the DX3500, and the hardware installation program looks for dll files for the one I am forced to select because the one I am installing is not listed, even though I'm providing the driver (for the DX3500). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Kodak software to see if it was a bad install, but it will not uninstall. I tried a couple of freeware uninstallers I found on the web, but they still go through the windows reinstaller, using a different interface, and I still cannot remove the program. I checked the for IRQ conflicts, and verified that the USB ports are working through Device Manager. Does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions where I can find an .inf driver? Thank you for any assistance you can provide.Meredith:

Many Windows ME systems shipped with an earlier (and slower) version of USB (i.e., Universal Serial Bus 1.1). The digital camera may require Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0). Check the documentation that came with the camera to see if it is USB 1.1 compatible.

DocThanks for the tip! I appreciate it. However, she said that it worked fine before she had it reformatted, and whoever did it used her original CDs...it's an older camera so still uses USB 1 (slow as molasses!).ME handles USB fine except it's not instantaneous...people have to be patient enough to give it time to do what it thinks it can do...i've worked on many machines where people lost tons of photos just because they got tired of waiting for the "safely remove hardware" thing to finish and/or they thought it wasn't working properly...

patio.
Meredith,

some other things you can try:

Connect the USB cable to the PC (with the camera connected and turned on, make sure the camera batteries are charged) - you will need the original camera setup disk for this. Make sure the original software is installed.
- check the Device Manager under System Properties (Control Panel)...is the camera listed (it could be under Drives)? If yes, does it have a yellow question mark or does it show any other problem (i.e. driver not installed, conflict, disabled...)? If yes, press the Remove button.
- if the camera is not listed under the Device Manager, is there anything else listed showing a yellow question mark? If so, this could be your camera. If you think it is, do the same as above and remove it.
- restart the PC, do not remove the camera and cable connection

Did the PC recognize new hardware when you restarted? If yes, insert your setup disk, and browse to it via the new hardware window. It should recognize the drivers on the original disk and continue with installation. If it doesn't locate them, you are browsing to the wrong folder or the disk is bad. Note that many camera drivers are supported by Win ME, so that it might not even need the disk.

Does the camera now show on her desktop or My Computer? If yes, then done. If no, then let us know what happend. Let us know anyway.

Hope this helps!
DellHi pcdoc4christ, Patio, and Dell4700,

Thanks for the assistance...if this happens again I will certainly try your suggestions...I just reformatted and reinstalled everything (it was so satisfying to FDISK after several days of frustration!) and it works fine now. I did a system restore point after installing it and VERIFYING that it worked so hopefully I can try to restore first if this happens again. The system restore did not WORK previously....

Thanks again!

Glad we were able to help you out!

Go back there & select the 'WEB' tab.

Is there any WEB tab in XP I have XP Pro and there's no web tab The WEB tab is a w2k thing, looking at the picture DL65 put up I guess xp doesn't have it.
Anyway, I clicked on a checkbox in mine & it put up the left hand thingie the same as mouse99's.
The box I ticked to create the problem was
'Show Web content on my Active Desktop'

(I'm booting a spare xp machine as I type)yeah sure, w2k thing.
thanks.I couldn't FIND it on the xp machine either, it's not my fault you are stuck with a lesser OS. LOL!Quote

lol
Did you forget? I am W2k -er also. XP would never ENTER my life...
but it was drivers Fed...
How much I miss 2k...Quote
Sorry, I guess I wasn't specific enough. Follow this:

1. Press the print screen button.

2. Open MS Paint.

3. When it opens, go to Edit > Paste. Your previous screen should appear, then you go to File > Save As...

4. Save your file to an easily accessible folder, My Documents or Desktop would work nicely.

5. Go to your web browser and type in the following address.

6. When the page loads, press the browse button near the center of the screen, then select the file that you just saved.

7. When it finishes loading, there will be a list of URLs for you to select. Click in the very bottom box, copy the URL, then navigate to this thread and paste the URL in your post.

Submit, and we will know exactly what you're experiencing.

lol nice print sreens, made by yourself?First, I'm really sorry for dragging this on so....I was looking around some Microsoft site and found a "Task Manager" capability for easy access to the web and current ITEMS and the bar was exactly like mine. It was a component of Windows XP (I have home edition) but in my reading it didn't tell you anything about displaying it or removing it from the screen...only about it being available and how to use it. And certainly not how to get rid of it or how I brought it up in the first place. But, the "blue bar" was identical. So, I've identified it finally, but to no avail. Maybe, once identified, someone uses it and can give me more info. Thanks, in advance.mouse99pa..... Ok , I received you Email ....and I d/l the MSN toolbar and installed it ......
And yes its as you described .......So I removed it ......To remove it .......Click START / CONTROL PANEL / ADDorRemove programs .......when the list populates ....scroll down until you see MSN SEARCH TOOLBAR ......then left click it and it will become hilited .....then move over to the right and click on remove ......and presto ...it will be removed and hopefully you will be back to the way it was before .

let us know how you make out .

dl65 I don't have MSN Search Toolbar on my list For a minute there, I was really EXCITED. But...no go. My son has promised that tonight he will work on it and if he manages to get it off....I certainly will let you all know how he did it....if I can understand it and can relay it in a way it makes sense. It this the sucker?
As you say, Win2K rules!I got it fixed....Hooray.....I cannot believe it!! I can see my whole desktop. This was the solution.

To remove the common tasks pane from your desktop:

Download http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CommonTasks.zip
and save it to your hard drive.

Locate and double-click the file you just saved and extract XP_CommonTasks.exe.

Double click XP_CommonTasks.exe to run the utility.

You will need to log off/log on or reboot for the change to take effect. There is
no install/uninstall. Simply delete the EXE file when done to remove it.

....once I opened the Common Tasks file, it said there was an error in it .... did I want to repair it? I said "Yes" and then it said to restart the computer... and "voila!!" No more blue bar. Yippee. Forgive me...I am so happy to see that sucker outta here.

Thank you so much for all your help. EVERYONE has been great. God Bless you all and Happy New Year to each of you. strange

Solve : Error on startup.?

Answer» IM running XP professional and after it tries to boot into Windows it gives me this error;
lsass.exe - Unable to locate component.
This app failed to start because SAMLIB.dll was not found
re-installing the app may fix this problem.

then after that all I GET is a dark screen and nothing else but I can still move the arrow around with the mouse. I didn't delete anything or change any settings it just restarted itself and then said that. Any thoughts on how to fix without installing windows again? You are PROBABLY virus infected. What are you using for antivirus that is updated and USED?

I hate Symantec, but here's a good read:

Solve : Outlook Express/Blue screen?

Answer»

Frustrating problem.
I'm RUNNING Trend MICRO PC-cillin 2006, WINXP PRO with plenty of Ram and disk space.
My default email is through outlook express 6.
Now my problem:
If I disable SCAN OUTGOING MESSAGES SENT etc in my email antivirus options, and try to send an e-mail through outlook express (6.0) my computer immediately CRASHES with a blue screen and I get :BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER
0X000000FE etc .
This happens every time and the odd thing is that if I activate this option it works fine.
Any insights?

Arturo
Why not leave it activatedI have to leave it activated or the crash happens.
I know I can and do leave it activated, but the crash is somesthing I want to silve.

ArturoWhat is plugged into the USB ports? Are there any comflicts in DEVICE manager before AND after you unplug the USB peripherals? (Don't just pull the plug, use the icon in the LOWER R corner to disable BEFORE physically removing!)

Do you ever just "pull the PLUGS" for these things?Dear sir,
I have a plantronic USB Headset in one socket and in another the Netgear Wireless adapter WG111v2 for my wireless connection.
No conflicts in device manager and I still have not tested removing the peripherals. This an update.
I unplugged the Plantronics USB headset and left the Netgear.
Really, I have to leave the netgear or else I can't send the e-mail which is the problem.
Tried again and bam, BLUE SCREEN with a NEW error:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Any ideas? Here's some reading. See what applies:

Solve : Can't open up word doc?

Answer»

Hi,

A friend of mine's laptop has got troubled with opening a word doc. This usually happens when she tried to open up the doc as an attachment on the email sent by people. So what happens is that she did as everyone i think would do that is double-click on the attached file that happend to be .doc. An error message was pop up saying (i can't remember what she said it was) something like can't open word doc. To resolve or be able to open the file is she actually has to go start -> all PROGRAMS -> microsoft office -> word doc, then she can open the file from there.

Is there something wrong there? or is it normal?
What should i do? i mean this happened before and i helped her to re-install the office XP because i thought the link might be missing there that caused the windows unable to open doc.

Thank you very much and look forward to hearing from youMaybe the document is restricted in Outlook Express...

Thank you Mac

hmm... Not sure if she was reading her emails thru outlook express. But i think it was thru the WEBMAIL. And if you try to open the attached file thru the webmail, you'd usually be prompted whether to save or open or cancel it. The problem arose when she clicked on the open button. It just wouldn't let her open it from there. But the only WAY to open it is to save it first SOMEWHERE on the local comp and then open the file via winword.exe (start->all programs->office->word document).

Any ideas? Thank you in advanceHer Webmail may well have the same restriction.

I generally save attachments and scan them for virii before opening. And, her antivirus, malware or other scanners may be preventing opening these documents.

Temporarily disable all the scanners and see if it solves the problem. If so, restart each one until the problem reoccurs. The last restarted will be the scanner preventing the files.

DellOk, I'll check that with her again.

Thanks a lot guys for being very very helpful.

Solve : Error message explanation..?

Answer»

While trying to sort out what was a defective HDD the following error message was displayed "Error while enumerating files". Just for interest sake can anyone explain in simple terms what would have caused this error and what it means.

What I have FOUND with Google just leaves me more puzzled.

Thanks..And what did you find? Sorry - should have mentioned running XP Home/NTFS SP.2.

Google came up with 2040k hits, a bit too many for me to open individually. Some mentioned enumerating the registry, others enumerating folders but none I opened came thru' with an explanation of enumeration as applied to files.

Wikipedia comes thru' with:
"Enumeration is the name given to the kind of mathematics that deals with counting objects. The objective is to find general methods that do not depend on knowing individual examples.

Kinds of enumeration include algebraic enumeration and combinatorial enumeration.
"

That is above my level of knowledge

Because the hard-drive was defective could the error message mean that a total number of files did not agree with the actual number of files found on the disk?

Perhaps, in this case, it is rocket science & I should have posted on the NASA site.. It means exactly what it says, there was an error when counting the number of files.

Take a look at the Word Enumeration in a Thesaurus.

I really like your FRANK and open honesty, it makes a very refreshing change.

At what stage did this occur? It can happen if the files need to have - chkdsk /f - run on them, if the drive needs defragmenting badly or if there is a problem with the Master File Tables.

Physical defects in the drive, or data corruption can also be the cause, and faulty RAM or bad, or badly screened, IDE cables which cause cross-talk can produce data corruption, as can any connections which are not properly made.

Have you run a test on your RAM with MemTest86?

Have you re-seated the RAM at any point in the life of the computer?

If the computer is five years old, or more, have you changed the CMOS battery?

If you run - chkdsk - from a Command prompt what do you see in relation to Bad Sectors or 4096 Bytes in each allocation unit?

I appreciate your diligence in your research before asking the question. Good for you!Mac... Thank you. The query I posted has been bugging me for many days. The error message appeared as a result of trying to run DIR C: from the Recovery Console and you hit it spot on, the Master File Table was corrupt. Turned out that the hdd was defective (see my original post here). The defect has since been confirmed by a fully-spec'd techie who believes it had suffered a head-crash. Thanks for taking the time to respond so fully. I have now found out from you that the number of files is counted, and CHECKED, by the OS, another little bit of info in the overall XP jigsaw to be filed away.

GX1_Man... Thank you. Your comment sure is a confidence booster.A dodgy hard drive would not display this error?Merlin... Then what other explanation can you offer? Can you direct me to a site for a better explanation please?.

Always willing to learn.

Thanks

I've been browsing these forums lately, because there is such a lot of information on it.. and cool solves . I think im an intermediate pc user myself.. and i dont mind HELPING others out,

But, now i encountered a serious problem even I cant solve.
To be more precise: My System Restore aint working, giving me the following ERRORS:

-> direct system restore startup:

System Restore cannot run until you restart the computer. Please restart the computer, and then run System Restore again.

EDIT: restarting does not work, not even a restart in save modus.

-> *check is system restore running*

-> windows log files:
srservice error: startup process failed
Service Control manager: stopped, device not ready

Check: do i have wininit.ini -> yes FILE available so there must be something missing. -> RENAME to wininit.xxx -> nothing changes.

Im using Windows XP home. Lately i have been removing some registry entry's with Registry Mechanic Pro. I did this on more PC's.. this is the only one with this problem.

I do not have an installation CD, but i do have a legal version of windows, when i bought this pc the retailer INSTALLED windows on it. I only have a repair disc ,and a 2nd pc with windows XP (professional)

Im pretty desperate atm, i really want to get system restore working again, preferable without having to reinstall. Sadly enough Microsoft does not offer good help on their website with this prob.

Thanks.A search for "System Restore" in the Microsoft Knowledge Base produces these 63 results:

http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?query=system+restore&catalog=LCID%3D1033&pwt=false&title=true&kt=PHRASE&mdt=0&comm=1&ast=1&ast=2&ast=3&mode=a&x=16&y=13&range=1-63

None of these 63 items is relevant.
One comes close (it describes this error) but it is for

Solve : windows logon?

Answer»

I want to change the appearance of Windows 98 logon to the one which you gonna pick one username rather than typing it. How can I do that.

Thanks

Can't be done, but you can in XP.At first, It does the way I want. I just click a username and type my password on the textbox. But when I change my primary logon to Client on windows network and back it on windows logon, It appears the same as LOGGING on the network.

So it means that its possible bec. I USED it before. The sad part is that I cannot change it back.If you change it the REASON it changes back is most LIKELY because of a group policy. Although I don't think you can change it in windows 98.

Solve : archiving huge files?

Answer»

Hi again

I've been thinking of archiving my big FILES. I'm talking about 5G size of files. They are back up files. I don't want to lose them. I've been doing google search on what's the best PRODUCT offered in the market? but couldn't find any in particular. I was wondering if you could give me some advices or recommendation.

Thank you in advanceYou want to try one of those upload sites like http://www.streamload.com to pay for there service. Or you can get those tapes that you can store. It is like a Video Casette. It is so cool. but it is not good unless you have tons of things to store on it. That is why I would recomend an Online site if you do not mind paying a small fee.Thank you windows98,

hmmm... ok, that's great. But i wonder if you know there are some zippers that is able to zip a file that is of 5G size to a smaller size. If you use the normal zip that comes with windows Xp, it takes ages to zip them. That makes sense because dealing with huge file here. But if there is a tool out there, that'd be fantastic.

Thank you in advanceI do not think you can compress a 5gb file to a few megabytes it is impossible. The only thing to do is burn them to a CD using backup and break them into pieces. 5GB is ALOT. Are you backing up your whole hard drive?General back up devices. Look up which suits you.

Tape Drives
Quarter Inch Cartridge
Travan Cartridge Tape
8mm Tape
Advanced Intelligent Tape - http://www.aittape.com.
Digital Audio Tape
Digital Linear Tape

Are these drive images or just backups? Can you burn them to DVD with standard compression?

Of course there could be other things you can do but the rest of the staff people arent here tonight.Ill try that out and thx for all the help.

If all else fails im probably gonna have to buy somethingheh....
I changed my bios and the colors and text are still distorted..so i guess its godda be me graphics card unless anyone has anything else to suggestOK I THINK I GOT IT..........
I swapped my AGP video card for a PCI video card and everything is back to normal.

The only question is....is it my AGP slot thats the problem or my graphics card? I have only had my graphics card for a couple of months by my MOBO i had for about 2 years.Contact the manuf. of that card for a RMA...it is probably still under warranty and should be replaced free of charge.

patio.

p.s. The only way to find out if the slot is bad is by hooking up a card that you KNOW is good.

Solve : Insufficient disk space?

Answer»

Win 98

I've just installed Win 98 and, in trying to install an update to CD Creator, I received message "insufficient disk space to apply patch. NEED at least 17242590 bytes free on drive." My C: drive has 74.1G of free space. This update has to be written to my Temp folder. How can I add space to the Temp
folder or correct this error? How can this be avoided in the FUTURE, if you know? I don't have many programs added to the PC yet.

Thanks for your usual help!http://www.microsoft.com/games/mechwarrior4/mw4_update_v3.rtf When I CHECK the C: drive's Properties it shows 74.1 GB free space. The install was done by a programmer, so I'm assuming he knows what he's doing. Never had that problem before. What's your suggestion? Reformat and reinstall? Thanks.

Peccavi, what's that update for? Thanks.Windows 98 uses FAT32 which can not work with partitions over 32GB in sizeThen someone is telling LIES mistaken, who?FAT32 supports up to 2TB (2000GB), same as NTFS. BTW, my Win98 partition has no problem recognizing a 47GB partition. From DOS or Windows, it matters not.So there you go, thanks CC. I had the same problem once but it was while installing a program that wasnt compatible with 98 SE could that be your problem

Solve : Windows, Linux, DOS- Oh my!?

Answer»

One of the few CERTAINTIES of life is that XP does not have DR-DOS code in it. If you cannot boot with a floppy then anything short of a bootable Win98 is out, and if the CDROM is not functioning, then anything else is out as well.

I am unsure of what you got that you DESCRIBED as a "Windows trial". If that is a real XP CD, then you could delete all partitions and start over IF you can get it to boot fromthe CD.

Let us know what you find.

'Trial' was my codename for that which shall not be admitted to in fear of having my *censored* sued senseless. As I said before, this little project is just something that would be sweet if it worked, I'm not looking for some powerhouse software. I don't want to waste money on something if it isn't going to work, so this is a test.

The copy of XP that I had contained Caldera DR-DOS somehow, and it actually gave me a prompt as I stated in my first post. This Windows 98 SE CD obviously doesn't have that, however it gives me the OPTION to boot from CD or my harddrive. When I press boot from CD, it gives me a black screen with a single isolated cursor and starts spinning the CD, then stops and hangs.

I'm going to try a Windows 98 SE boot disk ISO and see how it turns out. If the floppy doesn't work, the same thing on a CD-ROM should work given that the CD drive is operational, in theory.

Edit: Well I almost gave up on the boot iso disk, but at the last minute, it worked. I guess it just needed time on the blank-cursor screen or something, because after about 10 minutes (which is significantly less than the amount of time I waited on the actual OEM's blank-cursor screen) it gave me a boot with CDROM support menu and then some RAM thing, finally ending with a command prompt. I switched to my OEM CD after getting the prompt, then tried an fdisk and it gave me some kind of error reading drive A, so I did a format c:. After it formats, I'll try to continue with the pdf that came with it. Copying the files to the harddrive and such. I'll update if it works or not.

Edit: It almost worked like a charm. During setup it failed to copy some files for some reason (himem.sys, and some serial.xms or something, and vjstick/mouse.vmu), and after reboot, it wouldn't load Windows because of the missing himem.sys. I'm going to format again and try it, hopefully it will copy them correctly, I don't know why it didn't do it in the first place.

Edit: Ah damnit... Now I can't get it to give me the prompt again. It seems as if I pressed a button on the blank-cursor screen and the CD loaded, but now when I press a button all it does is spin the Cd, no menus or anything. I don't know but it's annoying as *censored*. If I can ever get back to the DOS prompt, I can copy the crap to the windows directory and boot off the HDD, but I can't seem to get a prompt *sigh*

Final Edit: Alright, I got it to work finally. Instead of relying on BOOTING off the Win98 CD, I copied the files that made the XP CD boot DR-DOS, then made a CD with all the files that setup claimed it failed to copy. I copied all the files to my harddrive with DR-DOS then booted off my harddrive and it worked. Well, very poorly. Every single thing was broken due to missing drivers so about 5 hours and 10 CD-Rs later, I got Windows to boot correctly. Correctly in the sense that it boots in safe mode by default, and the resolution is the smallest imaginable even though my screen should support higher. My floppy disk drive is broken beyond repair so my only means of communication with other peripherals are a serial port and the CD drive. I'm going to try to install Linux, and then delete Windows.

Thanks for the help guys You may also want to look at the Bios and system updates on IBM's website.

Solve : Laptop will not shut down or hibernate?

Answer»

hi, just came across your forum tonight and am hoping someone can help me.

i recently reformatted my laptop, using straight windows xp, not the recovery partition, which got corrupted so i no longer have it.

everything works fine except that it will not power down or hibernate properly. in both instances, i get to the 'it is now SAFE to turn off your compter' screen and have to push the power button to either turn it off or hibernate. shutting my laptop does nothing, it just continues to run. in device manager, i only have the option for standard computer, not APCI. i can't set any APM options, my laptop just freezes when i try.

i forced a HAL to APCI (pressed F5 i believe instead of F6 when installing xp), it seemed to accept it, but no change still.

when i go into the BIOS, i am missing the 'power' menu item, so cannot tell my system to use APCI. i have the most up to date bios for my system, and am at a loss as to what to do now. i've INSTALLED all windows updates as well. any help would be appreciated, thanks!

nec versa e2000
phoenix bios v 379B0800
intel celeron M 1.50
256 mb ram
winxp home sp2You may need to download the power saving feature from NEC website, based on your model number.hmmmm. would that be 'Intel Chipset 82865 G/PE/P Driver'? that's the only thing on the nec website, for this laptop, that i'm not entirely sure what it's for. the others are:

modem
sound
chipset
video
keyboard
bios (i have the most up to date ONE)
touch pad
wireless lan
utility for intel proset wireless utility
patch (both listed there are for sonic record now)

i don't see anything there for power management options, unless it's under something else?

does anyone know where i can get this? thanks.

Solve : Problem with windows startup?

I got a problem with my operating system. I'm RUNING on Windows XP Pro.

I accedently replaced winlogon.exe and licdll.dll in my system32 FOLDER. Now, everytime I restart my computer, I get a blue screen error with some WEIRD symbols after the loading screen, and the computer restarts.

I'd like to KNOW how I can restore the original files to that folder or run System Restore. I tryed the MS-DOS bootdisk but I couldn't find a command to start system restore. I ran the Recovery console though the Windows Xp cd, but it gives me an error and restarts the computer.

Any suggestions?did you try running it in safe mode?
command line to use from the rott of C: is -

windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe that should bring it up.

If safe mode wont load you can use the above with safe mode with command prompt.Go to Start/Run and type in SFC /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy.

Have you run a check on your RAM to see if data corruption lies at the back of this as it so often does.

Run a test on your hard-drive too.

Solve : computer won't start up at all plz help?

Answer»

Hi,
I am new to this but my laptop has (or so i think) crashed on me so plz help as I don't know what to do.

It's a TOSHIBA laptop with windows XP. I have left in on for 2 days without turning ot off as i was donwloading some stuff. Yesterday it just turned itself off, I have tried to turn it back on and at first the windows start up screen came up but the screen froze and i had to turn it off manually but now when i press the power BUTTON the only thing that comes up is the LITTLE "on" light and that's it. No noise, no error messages. Have had to turn it off manually a number of times now. Could it be that the hard DISK has crashed. I don't know.
Help plz!!!!!!!!!!Perhaps you downloaded malicious material. I've had my Toshiba Satellite powered on for about a month now, I doubt that's what caused your problem. Does the harddrive light flash at all?On no!!I am not sure if the hard drive was flashing, just remember the on button and no noise nothing. Not home at the mo so can't check. Does this meabn that my laptop is dead The little button that controls your monitor could've just been stuck or something. However you would still heard the logon tune if that's the case. Try jiggling the little monitor button and turning it back on, then listen for the logon tune, if it occurs then it sounds like your monitor is messed up. If you don't hear it after about five minutes, I guess your computer is broken. Remember to turn your volume up as well.Ok thanx so much for info. Will try it when i get back home. Just worried that it may be the hard drive, really don't want to loose all the stuff that i had on it.Could it have gone into hibernate? What is the key sequence to get out of hibernate on that machine? What model and how old is it?Don't think that it would hibernate as I was using it at the time that it died on me + it was switched into power. Also i am not sure if i mentioned before but when i turned it on straight after it showed the windows start up screen but froze so i had to turn it off and after that nada.... It's a TOSHIBA Satellite Pro M40 9002 I think and only 2 years old :-/ ThanxNo i haven't, it was just plugged into the mains + used to work well with the battery too. Someone suggested that it could be the hard drive thats gone, would that mean that i loose evrything on it??Ok thanx for info, not sure if I will be able to do it, i am terrible with computers but will give it a go. Anyway i will take it to a shop today and see if they can tell me what's wrong, hopefully it is nothing big and i don't have to replace too much. Thanx againOk took it to the the shop yesterday, the guy was quite useless really but he suggested that there might be a problem with the mother board (kind of think that i know what it is) but he said to contact toshiba directly. That's what i will be doing today, hope that if it is the worst case scenario at least i can get my hard drive info.
Thanx for replying to my posts all the BEST, will tell u the outcome.I have an update. After taking my computer to the shop, they told me that it is the mother board and it's replacement will cost pretty much th same as a new laptop. V sad but guesss there is nothing much to do just to get the stuff from my hard drive.
Thanx for all the advice

Solve : How to update graphics drivers?

Hey i posted something about my computer having trouble with its color options and a guy told me to update my graphics drivers so can anyone tell me how i GOT about doing that? Thanks for the helpFirst you have to post some details about your computer. Then you have to know what video card is in it. Then you have to get the right drivers for it from the manufacturer's website. Then you have to load the drivers.

DOWNLOAD Everst HOME Edition (free at www.lavalys.com) then post BACK all of the details.yeah depending on what type of Video Card you have you can go to the official site and download the newest drivers but remember to remove old drivers FIRST before installing new onesDRIVERS

Any good?I'm curious how you are supposed to remove the older drivers?

Solve : Will formating drive get rid of virus??

Answer»

Hi, I really need some help. I hope I'm in the right forum. I'm running win98 SE. I found the Junkie virus in memory while trying to repair windows. I reloaded windows but when I try to connect to the internet it just keeps popping up IE error and won't open a browser. I had Norton 5.0 installed but that became corrupt also. I managed to get out of DOS and BACK to windows, but windows isn't working right. I was wondering if I wipe out Windows and FDISK the hard drive, will this eleminate all virus'? Thanks for looking.Greearski....You should have posted in COMPUTER viruses and spyware , but as your new here .........here will be ok.
Junkie is a virus that infects .com files, the DOS boot sector on floppy disks, and the master boot record (MBR) on the first physical hard disk (drive 80h, drive C). The file form of Junkie does not become memory resident. It simply checks the MBR or floppy-disk boot sector for infection. If the sector is not infected, the virus infects the drive and returns control to the infected host file. The file form of the virus also contains code to target and remove from memory the antivirus TSR (VSafe), which shipped with MS-DOS 6.x. The virus code is two SECTORS in length and reserves 3 KB of memory. Thus, on a computer with 640 KB of memory, MEM would report 637 KB and CHKDSK would report 652,288 bytes of free memory.

If you do a full format and a clean install , you should be ok .......You may have picked up the virus from a floppy disk . It is also responsible for disabling your Norton AV

Solve : Nothing can be saved?

Answer»

This e-mail was sent to me by a friend

"I have a computer for the kids at home that I got from work. The only problem so far is that nothing can be saved. Every time the computer is rebooted a message comes up "Do Not Save To the C: Drive...Any Saved Information Will Be LOST The Next Start Up" not in these exact words but pretty close. The kids can't save anything because as soon as you turn the computer off it's GONE when they restart. I'm assuming that this has been set up by the site administrator so it can't overload the computer with saved crap. I was just wondering what your thoughts would be on this and if you know of a way to change things over so that the kids can start saving things without the frustration of losing information all the time."

Could it need ram?
Or a change in the BIOS?

Will post OS when the person who e-mailed me this replies to my request for that info.

Thanks,
Kellee
The OS would be important to know. It could surely function normally if the Operating System were reinstalled. Do you have a CD for that?I thought about going out on a limb here, but was AFRAID someone would chop it off. Secondhand computer->Reformat & INSTALL shiny new OS.It is running Win98.

Solve : my computer keeps restarting over and over?

Answer»

ok when i turn on teh computer it begins to boot up, but as it boots up it restarts. it doesnt even really load the operating system yet, but instead just restarts. like it runs through the memory testing thing then it comes to a screan that is like saying how it wasnt shut down right so it give the options of going to safe mode, last known good settings, or just start normaly. the problem is that i build the computer about a year ago so i dont have restore disks for it. this has also never happened before. is there any advice you can give me?Has anything happened to it? It was totally fine until this? What COMPONENTS are in it? Any details would be helpful.it has been fine before this, i MEAN it could be a virus or soemthing like that but if nothing loads before it restarts how would i go about removeing the virus. or could it be like a power issue or anything i just have no idea what is going onAgain details are helpful. If I have to guess blindly, like you seem to want, I would say power supply or bad ram.sorry bout that jsut doing a couple things at the same time. asus a7n8x motherboard amd athlon processor 3000+ 2 GIGS of ram, gforce asylum 256 VIDEO card. can the ram jsut go bad randomly like that or do u think it is a virusIf it has problems before Windows, it sounds more like hardware. Test one stick of RAM at a time with memtest (free at memtest86.com), then both (if two) together. Let it run for a few hours. If it won't boot with one stick of rAM, tr swapping in a known working power supply and see what happens.ok this is wierd cause now the computer WONT even turn on. like it has evberything connected the same as before i didnt adjust anythign yet but when i press the on button nothign happens at allYour PSU has just taken a dump...when buying a new one don't scrimp. Spend the extra for a quality unit.

Solve : Unmountable_boot_volume error message?

I have been trying for months to fix my computer-that I often LET my older kid play games on. But everytime I try I get an error message saying unmountable_boot_volume! oxooooooED ETC. etc.
I have tried everything imaginable to fix the problem-I've tried formatting mainly and adjusting the boot order to do so-recently I found an article that states I may need a 80-wire, 40-pin connector cable for the UDMA hard disk controller. Is this true-ya think? I really am stumped and dont know what else to do. Any feedback would be helpful-my brother who is a uber-computer nerd cant even figure it out-so THANKS!!
BTW-I run windows xp on it and it is a fairly old bot.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q297185I tried that-this where I found the article about the 40-wire connector and having to upgrade to the required 80-wire,40-pin cable. Have you tried running a check on your HDD?

Usually can be fixed in recovery console/DOS with:
chkdsk /r

if that still fails your HDD needs replacing.Ive tried all of dem cept the booting thang. Can u TELL me how? I dunno how. Teehee Tanks

Solve : computer can't access secure websites?

Please help...

My laptop has been unable to access any SECURE websites(bank, credit cards, shopping online) since last week.

The subscription of my antivirus software expired also last week. I am not sure whether it's related.

Can someone help me

Thank you.

Make of laptop?
Operating system?
What anti virus did/do you have?

If it's still on there but expired - remove it. It could be the security aspect of the anti virus that is preventing the secure sites to display.

It could also be a virus or spyware as you seem to be using the system un-protected...very BRAVE!!Make is DELL, Microsoft XP is the operating system & the expired antivirus software is Norton.

How am I going to uninstall the antivirus program?

Thanks for the reply.GO to start, control panel, add or remove programs and select your antivirus and you will have a button that says change/remove then the process will go through removing all the antivirus files on your computer. not a good idea to surf the net unprotected though.I just did that, but unfortunately, when I click my antivirus program, there was no option for change/remove program? Any idea what that means?

Thanks. What option does it give you???The ONLY info it DISPLAYED was, "it is used rarely". But for other programs, I can see the change/remove button.ok, on your start menu there should be a shortcut FOLDER for your antivirus, in that shortcut there should be an option to uninstall norton. otherwise if you go through my computer and to the DRIVE the anitvirus is installed, then to program files and open the anitvirus folder there should be an uninstall icon there.tried it, this was the message "Cannot delete, make sure disc is not full or write protected".

Thanks.

you need to make sure your antivirus is not running in the sys tray on the right hand side of your taskbar. right click on the norton icon and click close or exit. then try running the uninstall again.

Solve : XP: how to partiton extended??

Answer»

}{'lo everyone!

I need a little help. I installed windows XP recently and, though I have done it before, this time I did something a little differant.

I Partioned my disk while INSTALLING XP to setup and format just 10 gigs of my hdd (in NTFS) for the operating system and then figured I'd come in later after installing windows with a program called swiss knife and partion the rest. However Swiss knife doesn't want to partition the drive due to the fact that it has windows xp on it .

And so I am in need of some assistance. In a post by MAC he said that you can "...USE XP's Disk Management to make an Extended partition in the remaining unallocated space and put up to three Logical PARTITIONS within the Extended partition."

unfortunatly he left out how exactly to do that . Where is this magical little tool that I so greatly desire per chance? And is there anything I should know before using it? Oh and yes it sounds like I'm limited to only three extended partitons? I was KINDA hoping for four actually. Is there a program that will alow me to partion it into four peices? (and is preferably free and run from inside windows)

Many thanks!Right clik My Computer...select MANAGE and go to Disk Management. All the tools you need you will find there.

Solve : Hard Drive Detect/ Windows Load Problem?

Answer»

Hey I'm having a problem with my hard drive loading windows.
I was switching through old hard DRIVES to recover old data. When i tried to put my main hard drive back in it wouldn't load.
It won't detect at all unless you go into setup and set both drive slots to auto detect and then when its does detect it will go past the mother board load screen then sit at a blank screen with a blinking underscore.
My boot disk doesn't work.
I can load the hard drive PROPERLY if i put in another drive as the main and load it as a secondary but the older drives don't integrate with my current hardware well at all and i can't access the cd drives that way.

Well thats the state of things and if anyone has advice or a solution please e-mail me or post at your earliest convenience. And what make/model is this sytem? Operating System? Any further details so that we are not guessing blindly? If this is XP load the Recovery Console and type - fixboot

You can find the other commands by typing - help - at the prompt.

Solve : Laptop to PC Comunication?

Answer»

I WOULD like to know the best way for my laptop to comunicate with my PC using wireless.
I am using something called a linksys box now and it is very slow!
Thank you for any help.
Sam Morton
Without knowing any details of your system and setup it is difficult to comment. The way I do it is with a wireless router. I connect my PC to the router with the standard CAT5 CABLE and my laptop uses wireless. EASIEST way to have them be able to communicate, and both access the Internet. You could also use a SWITCH but for at home I prefer a router, more secure.

It would be nice to have more information about what you have setup and what you're trying to do though.

Solve : Windows MovieMaker?

Answer»

Can anyone help me please!! I've been working on this project forever in MOVIEMAKER. I made a video of still photos and music. I need to figure out how to play it on a DVD player. Do I just burn it on a DVD? That seems to easy. I burned it onto a regular cd-r. It will play on other COMPUTERS but not DVD PLAYERS. Any help would really be appreciated!!A cdr disk contains 740mbs......a dvd disk contains 4gig of space....this playing depends how is was written to disk.....some dvd players will no play it due to codeing.....you may need avi-dvd decoder to play in on a dvd player......belkin video-bus is worth the cash...PC to tv....Most DVD players will not play CDR. There are lots of exceptions.
You can RECORD it as a video CD (VCD or SVCD) and many newer DVD players will handle it. Cyberhome CH-300 (<$40) will play them, for one.
This all assumes you only have a CDR recorder. If you record your stuff on a DVD recorder, of course, it will play on home DVD players.

Solve : license agreement display error?

Answer»

my COMPUTER will not let me install any virus software. i GET an error that says 'cannot display license agreement, install windows wordpad'
does anyone know how to fix this? my wordpad works fine and obviously is installed. thanks in advance.Have you tried safe mode?would that make a difference? i will when i get home.safe mode would not work. said it could not use windows installer in safe mode. any other ideas?I would recommend going to www.trendmicro.com and running their antivirus. Also I would run some anti-spyware programs. Then RESTART your PC and try installing again.tried it, and have been trying their online support to no avail. Create & save a wordpad file, close down wordpad then navigate to the file you saved & double click on it.
Does it open?yes it opens. saves as a RTF. i think trendmicro has given up helping me. Quote

If you are unable to install any anti-virus software ....that a pretty good indication that your machine is infected with some virus.
BTW ..which anti virus software are you trying to install?
oops ...sorry about ASKING that question .......Fed has already addressed that.
What other scanning software have you scanned your machine with ?
Which operating system are you using ?

dl65 installing trendmicro pccillin internet security 2006. had 2005 and 2004 before that. operating system is windows 2000pro. have been running the free 'house call' from trend since im currently lacking virus PROTECTION.
lastyear when i installed 2005 everything worked like it should. i dont know if thats important or not. most likely not thanks again for helping.Until you get it sorted DLoad AVG or AVAST and try installing them...
As they are free it won't have cost you a penny.

Probably something as simple as doing a full re-install or dating someone else...

Do you have data on the drive which is vitally important? I guess not ortherwise you wouldn't have let anyone borrow it.

What is the Make and Model of the laptop, as they tend to have DIFFERENT recovery systems, and what sort of recovery CD(s) do you have?

If the laptop has been bumped at all the RAM module(s) may need re-seating.
Hi Mac!

You could be right about dating someone else! I couldn't beleive it when I got it back! Thankfully there wasn't any important information on there. I have fixed the problem now, I just did a complete re install of windows, and spent a couple of hours re installing all the programs I had on it ALSO. Never MIND. Lesson learnt & all is WELL! Thank you so much for your time & help! Greatly appreciated.Another solution by reinstalling Windows!!!

Sounds LIKE Mac almost had a date, too. What to do when Windows continuously restarts

Solve : Sound and network cancel each other?

Answer»

I've had a recurring problem with sound and my wireless NETWORK connection for a few weeks; I can't remember anything I could have installed or done that would have started this, other than possibly installing WinAmp. I haven't installed any new hardware for a year or so.

I have an M-Audio Delta sound card and a D-Link PCI wireless network card. I access the internet through the wireless network. These have HAPPILY coexisted for a couple of years until the current trouble. I'm using XP Professional SP2.

If I use any sound application on the PC - e.g. playing music in Winamp or Media Player, or sequencing in Cubase - the network connection is dropped. This happens between 5 and 10m after starting to use sound. I can click the option to 'repair' the connection and this works each time.

If I use sound while actively on the net, e.g. Quicktime movies, often the sound will simply STOP after a few minutes, and only a reboot will bring it back.

I've uninstalled the drivers for the sound card and reinstalled them, but it made no difference.

Here are the IRQs:
IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK

IRQ 19 NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 OK
IRQ 20 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller OK
IRQ 21 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller OK
IRQ 22 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller OK

I notice that my graphics card and the network card are sharing 19, but the sound card is on 17.

Can anyone help?Check the resources tab for each of the suspect devices in Device Manager - this will show if there is a conflict or not.

Also try going into your BIOS seeing if you have an option to Reset Configuration Data or Clear SVRAM, this forces the PC to re-assign the IRQ's for all of the devices on reboot.

You never mentioned if you had tried re-installing the drives for the network card or updating either driver.
Try these as well.

My NIC and VGA card use the same IRQ as well so that's not the problem. In Device manager, under 'other devices' I have a Multimedia Controller in PCI Slot 7 (PCI bus 1, device 9, function 0), for which it says no drivers are installed. It has an exclamation mark. Also under 'other devices' it lists an Ethernet controller and an SM Bus controller, both disabled. I'll try disabling the multimedia controller and hope I don't lose my picture!

The sound card is in PCI slot 6, no problems or conflicts reported.

The network card is in PCI slot 4, no problems or conflicts.

I have downloaded and installed the latest driver for the sound card but not yet for the network card.If it lists anything under 'Other Devices' then the system knows what they might be but as you say doesnt have the drivers for them.

You'll need to get the drivers for the sound card and the ethernet controller. The SM Bus controller should be installed either through SP2 or your motherboard drivers disc.I don't even have an ethernet controller (assuming that means a cable network card)!

My PCI slots have:
- a USB2 hub
- a TV/DVD video card that I don't use (would that be the multimedia controller?)
- the sound card
- a single USB port (is that SM Bus?)
- the network card
- my video card.

The sound card has the latest drivers, downloaded and installed today. Sound plays for about 3m then cuts out.
Hasn't disconnected the network yet, just cut itself off, which is worse because you have to reboot to get it back.

Any other info I can give you that might be useful? I'm going to try the BIOS operation you suggested.

Try dis-connecting the card you are not using and removing it from Control Panel...

patio. I think the problem is resolved. I went into BIOS and did what you suggested, and while there discovered the onboard sound device was also enabled, which it shouldn't have been. So I disabled that and disabled the 'questionmarked' things in Device Manager.

I've had well over ten minutes of sound playing without any cutting out or affecting the network.

I had to reinstall my Cubase sequencer as it wouldn't open with the new audio card drivers but after reinstallation it was OK.

I'll monitor for a couple of days now and see if it really is fixed. Thanks very much for your time and advice.

Solve : port services?

Answer»

hey,

I did a port scan at a website and it gave me these results.

Quote

The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 21 (ftp).
The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 23 (telnet).
The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 53 (domain).
The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 80 (http).
The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 110 (pop3).
The host {IP} does not have a service running on port 139 (netbios-ssn)

How do i enable these services?

Thanks.
Leave WELL enough alone. You don't want services enabled on those ports. They are specific use ports. If you should leave them open, half the world would be accessing your computer. Every cracker, virus, and malware on the internet would come looking for you.ok well i thought that was the reason why my internet CONNECTION keeps failing.

Wonder if anyone knows the reason.

It works again after i uninstall my ethernet card (through the device manager) and then reinstall it.

Does that mean there is something wrong with my ethernet card???*bump*What OS? How are you connected? Any time outs set? What error message(s) do you get? Under what circumstances does the failure occur? All of our crystal balls have been confiscated so we can't tell what your problem is unless you provide information.Nope no errors not nothing, mostly the connection just times out and won't re-connect.
