then try to use system restore....

note: if you can use SAFEMODE...use system restore...just try to remember how many days the problem exists...ok

hope it helps Use System Restore feature to sort out your problem. Guys if he can't boot he can't use system restore.
The easyest thing you can do is creating a boot disk.
An other thing if you're using a normal PC you can slave your HDD to an other PC.
From there you can get your docs and after that you can REFORMAT and reinstall XP.
Next you can put your docs back.

Jonas Jonas thanks and all other guys..

I got it WORKING, all you do is install new os but leave the current files intouch. it wont delete anything..

ThanksQuote from: Shynnie on October 29, 2007, 11:59:57 PM

Solve : registry corrupt??

Answer»

hi,,
heres the problem i turn on my desktop computer and the f8 screen appears, no matter which one i click (safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command PROMPT, last known good configuration or start windows normally) i get the following error on a BLUE screen:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STOP: c0000218 {registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SAM
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

it wont load into windows as my registry is corrupt
I do not have OS disk and no recovery disks. im currently using my laptop to access the internet but need back onto the computer soon for work reasons.
Is there anyway to keep my files already on my computer and get this problem solved, Any suggestions more than welcome!!!See if this helps:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q156640RESOLUTION
To RESOLVE this issue, follow these steps:
1. Start your computer by running the Recovery Console, run the chkdsk /p command on the drive, and then restart your computer. Test to determine whether the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to step 2.
2. When Windows loads, PRESS SPACE BAR when the "Load Last Known Good" message appears.
3. Complete a parallel installation, and restore the registry files from a tape backup. To do so: • Reinstall Windows in a separate folder.
• Restore the damaged registry hive from backup. This procedure is specific to the backup application that you used to make a backup. Consult the documentation of your backup application or consult the vendor if you need assistance. Typically, this procedure requires you to restore a system state backup to an alternate LOCATION, and then copy the appropriate registry files to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\config folder of the damaged operating system.
• If you do not have a tape backup, include the backup of network servers and production workstations.
NOTE: If Windows is stored on a FAT partition, you can restore the files by using another computer and by copying the registry hive files to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Config subfolder.

how do i run my recovery console and run the chkdsk /p command on the drive?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

Solve : I just dont no what to do any help??

Answer»

I recently had a problem with my laptop that it would not load up. So i did a little research and found that my laptop hard drive had GONE from the error message i got.

Not a problem so far.

I then said ok ill buy a new hard drive which i did and is the extact same model as the one i had as i did not want to GET it wrong.

I then put the new hard drive in to the laptop and put my windows xp disk in cd rom drive.

This is the problem i have that the cd-rom tries to read the disk but fails and the disk does work cos i tried it on a friends so i dont know how to get windows on my hard drive.

I have tried numerous WAYS first i tried installing throught another laptop, the hdd WORKS on there but when i put it back in the broken laptop it blue screens.

I tried from usb but my laptop doesnt accept it also i have no floppy disk drive.

I dont mind spending money to fix it as long as it works.

What can i do?

P.S my laptop is a toshiba satiellete a40-151 with 30gb hard drive

Thank you in advance if you can help try unpluging your hard drive then plug it again...power it on your laptop then press del the set up bios will be prompted then look for boot priority 1st boot - CDROM 2nd boot-HARD DISK then save and exit and compter will restart... I think your system is toasted.

Get your old hard drive and try to connect it to another laptop and see if it boots. That would tell you that the old drive wasn't bad and that your laptop has gone on to the happy hunting ground in the sky.

It will force your computer to look for boot disk in your CD Rom drive. If your XP disk is in that drive it should start loading Windows XP.

Solve : Old Laptop Slow Startup?

Answer»

Thank you Patio, Dairyman, Programming Pat, and 2K Dummy. I ran Stinger in normal and safe mode. It did not find any infected files. I still get the popup box RUNDLL, Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32:ufjcxsh.dll when booting. The specified module could not be found. There is a click OK box, then boot continues. I believe this file was associated with Backdoor.Afcore, a trojan, that was removed by AVG Spyware. I also get the warning that the system is low on virtual memory. The msconfig OPERATION may be a little above my pay grade. Msconfig startup does show, SysTray.exe (unsure about this one), system32:ufjcxsh (unsure about this one), WPN511 (this is wireless card), ashDisp (Avast, Alwil AV), and Tea Timer (Part of Spybot). These items are all checked to run. The items unchecked are CFD, PSFree, RealPlay, RecoverFromReboot, Dragdiag, mobsync, tgcmd, Microsoft Office, and Connection Manager. Thanks guys.Quote

KWPI would like to add my sincere thanks to Patio, Dairyman, 2KDummy, and Programming Pat for their expert help with my old laptop. It is running better, and I believe it is relatively free of viruses and spyware. It does still take about 5 minutes to boot, and I have about 600 MB of free disk space with no anti-virus or spyware program installed. I have downloaded all of the Microsoft updates and Hot Fixes through SP4. I only use the machine occasionally, and I do not download music, porn, or emails from people I do not know. My question is, should I use an AV program, with the accompanying slowdown and memory requirements, and could I remove some of the MS updates, SPs, and Hot Fixes? Would a reboot of Windows 2000 run better? What is the best, free, low resource AV? I have Word, PP, and Excel from my legal Office 2003 CD. I believe that I need Windows 2000 with at least SP3 to run Office 2003. Thanks again for your help.

KWPTo free up space you can safely get rid of all the $NTUninstaller$ files. These are in case there is a problem with an update and you need to uninstall the original.
Win2K is almost done with updates and none of them to my knowledge had problems so go ahead and uninstall those.
As far as AV programs i'd suggest AVG Free. Nice powerful and not a resource hog.
You can schedule it to update and run at a set time each day. Lot's of people here recommend it as well. I've used it for years and both my personal machine and my testbench remain clear of pests.

You will want to un-install whatever AV program you have as having 2 of them is redundant and they can bang heads causing problems.

You've come a long way to resolve your issue and should be commended for sticking with it.
We'll do what we can to KEEP that machine purring like a cat...

p.s. After getting rid of the uninstaller files i recommend running Disk defragmenter...WHENEVER you remove a sizeable amount of data this should be done.Thank you Patio for your help and support. What is the best way to safely get rid of all the $NTUninstaller$ files? Patio, thank you for your suggestions.Highlight the first one by clicking it once with the mouse in WINDOWS Explorer...
Then hold down the SHIFT key and use the down arrow to scroll to the end of the list which will highlight them all as a group...
Then right clik on the highlighted group and select Delete. You might find these programs and info helpful I would like to add my sincere thanks to Patio, Dairyman, 2KDummy, and Programming Pat for their expert help with my old laptop. It is running better, and I believe it is relatively free of viruses and spyware. Special thanks to Patio for your thoughtful suggestions and support.

If not you should do a clean reinstall of windows, because Windows doesn't handle major hardware changes very well.

Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thoroughly before proceeding paying special attention to the warning sections.
Then print out a copy for reference before starting.
Also make sure you have all your drivers : MBoard, video etc.

If done properly it will recognise the new MBoard (drivers will still need to be re-installed ) and your data and programs will remain intact.

Warning: Any mistakes made in this process and you may lose all your data so take your time and PAY attention.well, i have to follow that advice from you SIR, thanks...install the driver(CD) of your new motherboard... the .NET framework setup is there install it.. Solve : Very confused: Internet?

Answer»

I have Windows XP. Im not very good with computers, but I have a problem which nobody thus far has been able to answer.

Yesterday when I came home I found that AIM could not be reached. Figured AIM was down, went to browse the Internet Explorer. When that didn't connect, I started to get worry. It didn't give a "Webpage cannot be displayed" type page, but nothing. Nothing would load in the toolbar, and no page would come up. The loading bar was just skipping. It would load half way across the toolbar then RESTART.
Tried Fulltilt poker, couldn't connect to server. So I restart my computer and router. Nothing. Run all my spyware and adware programs, run AVG and norton. Nothing. I still CANT sign on to AIM, use IE, or FTP.

BUT, I open limewire and the internet connection is strong and I can search for ANYTHING I want, download anything I want. So how can I have a connection on this but nothing else? Couldn't figure it out, so I walked away and watched a movie. I walk back, and I to my surprise I could sign on AIM.

2 hours later I realized no one was responding to me on AIM. I also realized that the page on my IE hadn't loaded. So I close them both, and again, they didn't work.

Today I woke up and I could sign on again. I'm writing this now, but not sure when I will be able to get back to it. Any ideas would help.I appologize if this is in the wrong place, but I just wanted to get it out there before I lose connection which seems to happen at any moment randomly. It would be difficult to say what exactly is causing the problem. Try running HijackThis and post your results on here. Then some of us can possibly resolve this for you..Good Luck. What sort of connection do you have?
How long has this been happening?
Have you tried contacting your ISP?
Any chance that one of your Limewire DOWNLOADS may be causing trouble?
Can you use the internet without problems in Safe Mode With NETWORKING?
Do you have a firewall installed? If so, try disabling it for a few minutes and see if that makes a difference. NOTE: this is not recommended and is only being suggested in hopes of eliminating a possibility. Once you have tested this, please turn your firewall back on immediately, as you are left unprotected without it.Also...

So I restart my computer and router
Try bypassing router, and connect your computer straight to the modem.

Solve : Not sure what to do?

I am trying to help my mother in law with her computer problem and would appreciate any suggestions. She turns on her computer and it never gets beyond the WINDOWS XP page. A friend told US to GO to safe mode as soon as we turn on the computer. Then go to c drive and do "error checking". When we chose the safe mode option, it listed everything in her hard drive and then froze at that screen. We could not get beyond this screen. Any ideas?Welcome to the CH forums.

As you haven't posted any error message can we presume there are none displayed?

I suggest hardware diagnostics Memtest86 from Memtest.com and hard disk diagnostics from your hdd manufacturer's site.

What is this supposed to MEAN ? ? ?Could try rebootingThere were no error messages. It could be a heating problem. Are you sure that the computer is freezing? Try ctrl, alt, del to see if the task manager will come. If it does, check applications to see if they are running or stopped.I'm not sure if it is called "freezing". It just will not go past that page that list all the items in hard drive. If it is not in safe mode, it will not go past the "Windows XP" graphic page.

She lives about 90 miles from me. I was there this weekend trying all different things. If there is something she can do, it needs to be explained to me thoroughly so I can explain it to her.Quote from: patio on October 29, 2007, 08:16:32 AM

master booter - this is a software that can boot the Xp whenever the windows is not booting.it will help you to boot in your system... if u have windows cd you should be able to boot from it and RECOVER your OS. just hope your boot order has CDrom priority over C drive.

Solve : ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt upon bootup?

Answer»

ok like 4 or more days ago i did a quick format and during the reformat most of the files were skipped and i went thru with the fresh install WinXP and upon rebooting i get an error stated in Topic Name.

I have tried EVERYTHING including using a restore cd to get to a recovery console but I get a BSOD STATING that the FILE url.dll is corrupt.

I've also tried a bootable diskette that i formatted on my dad's computer which has XP on it.

This is also the 4th forums that i've posted this on, the previous 3 havent helped one bit. What method did you use to format ? ?
Format should not skip anything.
A bootable floppy won't contain the WINDOWS XP boot files...it takes 6 of them i believe...
More info on what procedures you have followed and someone will be along shortly.

Solve : Config Sys file missing?

Answer»

I am using a HP media center PC m385c with Windows XP media center EDITION
Updated Norton from Internet Security 2006 to Internet Security 2007. All was fine.
Next day received error message Auto Protect Off; it was On the day before.
Pop up for auto fix tool
Ran auto fix tool - I was not watching it and when I looked again I had a black screen with white leters saying Windows had shut down before there could be any damage.
Tried to re-boot and got error message file system32\config\system is missing. How can a config sys file just disappear?
I cannot boot into safe mode; I cannot get to recovery or repair.
Any suggestions? It's not a config.sys file that's missing, it 's the config folder.

Thank you Norton...once again

So you can't get into a restore or repair option (the ones that show up when you boot and you HIT F10 or F12 or whatever) right?

Can you boot to the Norton CD? I think they might have recovery options but I'm not sure.

The only other option I can think of is CONTACT HP for a set of recovery DISKS.

Alan <>< Thanks for the reply. At least now I feel comfortable that Norton is the problem. This is the second time this has happened with Norton. The first time I went out and bought a new computer, it was time to upgrade anyway. That is not the solution this time. Of course I can find th disks to every edition of Windows I have ever had except the XP media center.
Do you have a recommendation for something other than Norton?
ThanksAVG is better than Norton and it's FREE. Quote

Solve : I've Been Receiving An Error Message When I Boot Up My Computer?

Answer»

The other day I booted up my computer and I received this error message:

Error LOADING C:WINDOWS\system32\gzmrotate.dll

I tried to do a system restore and it couldn't ever find a date. I tried typing in sfc /SCANNOW in the RUN box and it didn't delete this message. I also tried the disk cleanup and that didn't work. I am running Windows XP HOME Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. I would appreciate any help I can get. Try this fix:

PLEASE download the program called "Regseeker" through THIS link; unzip the program, and run it. enter "gzmrotate.dll" (without the quotes) and let the program search for it.

Since whatever it finds may be deleted, you can select all (Xtrl+A) and press the [Del]-KEY. Close the program, and reboot. Problem should be fixed now.

Alan <>< gzmrotate.dll is a part of AdRotator/IconAds adware.
If you can log in to Windows, download HijackThis:

and post its log at Computer Viruses and Spyware forum.

Solve : Problem with reformatting?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would give me some advice here. My desktop computer is currently infected with viruses and spywares. I have attempted to remove them even to the point of going to the safemode and run both the antivirus and lavasoft adware. They were detected and already removed. But they still appeared again. I even went to run msconfig and disabled all other startup programs. But still the viruses were founded by norton antivirus. I have made sure that all the antivirus and adware are up to date in virus definition. But now i gave up. So what i'm trying to do is reformatting my hard disk. I put in the windows XP CD to the CDROM. Then, restarted the computer hoping that i could do it from there at the rebooting stage. However, everything went ok til the stage where i was asked to press anykey to continue installing or repair or quit. I pressed any key and the next screen was with the following message.

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer..."

Very strange, Why is it saying that since it could load up the windows XP OS?

Any ideas? your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.Sounds like the virus is in the restore files. Turn off system restore and rerun your AV from safe mode. You can turn system restore back on when you come up clean.Thank guys for your reply.

It's not that old really. It's seagate Barracuda. It's gone worse now. What i did was when rebooting the computer, i press SHIFT+F8 to go to Safemode, but instead of selecting Safemode, i SELECTED the choce of "last known good configuration". Then, i went to load the windows. All i could see from the screen is just the background with nothing on the screen at all. Furthermore, there is no START button as what we usually see when the windows XP loaded up. What should I do now?

The reason i selected the last known good configuration was i THOUGHT since i was unable to reformat the harddisk, by going for that selection i could restore my computer to the stage where there was no viruses. I guess that's my mistake. I'm still learning.

Thank you in advance and look forward to your help.
I would run the hard drive diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site as well.Thank you to both Mac and GX1_Man for your helps.

Yes, that's right. I could not be able to view all the desktop icons nor the taskbar.

May i ask how to download the program from the link you recommended me to since i can't access to IE browser from the desktop.

Is there anyway of getting AROUND this?

Maybe it's my mistake to have chosen the "Last known Best configuration" option.

But thank a lot guys.

Thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.Hi, Mac

Alright, I'll do that. Just wanna check with you if i do it right. Once it's saved onto floppy disk. i have to get the troubled computer to reboot it from the floppy disk so that it would run the program on the disk. Is that right?

May i ask how to get to the BIOS configuration so that i can change the reboot order in order to reboot from the floppy disk?

Thank you in advance and I'll keep you posted. There is a key or key sequence to get into BIOS/setup when the computer starts, before the Windows logo. Since you never provided your computer or motherboard make/model we have to guess. Dell uses F2, many iBM's use F1, many generic boards use the Delete key. It should say on screen when it starts booting.

Yes, just download the floppy files and then either unzip them to a floppy or double click on the file to createt a floppy. The filename will tell you what you need to do. If it ends in .exe just double click on it.

Solve : PC constantly restarts/can't get into Safe Mode?

Answer»

Hey all,

New to the forums, looks like eveyone is of great help on the board.

Yesterday I deleted a virus that Avast! detected. I don't have the virus name, but the type was a "Clone".

Upon dleeting the virus my computer loads right up to the DESKTOP and then RESTARTS continuously. When I try to start in Safe Mode through F8, the ARROW keys are disabled. So I am not able to select starting in Safe Mode. I'm running XP.

Any thoughts?Do you have a standard PS2 KEYBOARD or USB?It's a standard USB keyboard. I've tested the keyboard when the computer boots to the desktop. However, when I enter the F8 screen the keyboard is unresponsive.Setup a PS2 keyboard and try it.

Solve : Moving Windows XP?

Answer»

I am trying to move an installed copy of Windows XP (SP2) from a small hard drive to a larger one. I used Acronis' TrueImage to clone the small drive onto the large drive. After DEACTIVATING the small drive, when I try to boot from the larger drive I get the NTLDR is missing. What have I DONE wrong? What is the proper way to do this?Your 'copy' of Windows is still CONFIGURED to your old hard drive.
A clean install is the way to go.Is this a replacement drive for the same COMPUTER? Or trying to put a Windows installation from one MACHINE to another? I am not clear on what you are trying to accomplish.

with regardsProbably something wrong on the motherboard. RAM poorly seated, card loose,e tc. Did you move it or do anything to it lately?I hope you have backups of everything you really want. WORST case scenario, it's a failed hard drive.

Solve : MS AntiSpyWare?

Answer»

I'm LOOKING for a explanation or solution as to why gcasServ.exe (a MSAS component) would suddenly start running at 97-100% CPU. The last time this happened, I un-installed and re-installed which was fine for about 2 weeks. Today it suddenly reverted back to sucking up CPU cycles.

WinXP - Pro SP2
Dell P3 1GHz 512MB

I have MSAS installed on many machines, but this is the only one acting up. Any ideas?Could it be updating itself? Thanks, Fed. I thought of that too, but there was no network traffic and the last update was 11/17.

What's REALLY weird is that it doesn't seem to interfere with anything (there is no network or disk activity) and actually goes down when other jobs startup but as soon as the machine is idle, up it goes.Have you uninstalled, and reinstalled the updated version?

There have been some issues recognized with the initial release.Could it be actually INSTALLING a downloaded update?
I removed it from my computer because I found it too SLOW & too user-unfriendly.
A perfect companion to windows... push enter to exit.Careful Fed. You're moving closer to Linux!!!!If a big crash ever gets me I'll partition a large chunk of HDD for linux.Deal. Let me know when that it is. It can be more fun than Call of Duty 2. Quote

I'm looking for a explanation or solution as to why gcasServ.exe (a MSAS component) would suddenly start running at 97-100% CPU.

Its checking your bank and credit card statements so MS KNOWS how much to charge when payola kicks in. Who do you want to pay today? Thanks everyone. I decided to download a new version and monitor it. I'll give it a couple of weeks. I couldn't find any issues on this on the net but you never know.

As for the payola, even though it's one of the better products out there, if Microsoft ever starts charging for it I'll bail. Paying protection money to a company to protect yourself from their OS flaws is too surreal for me.

Wait until you see XP SE (Sucker Edition) that just sucks the money right out of your bank account and burns it.

Solve : Region settings for DVD player?

Answer»

Running windows XP can anyone tell me how to change the region sttings and they are greyed out in device manager,
it syas you cant change any more that 5 times they have never been changed. It is now set at region 1 and need be changed to region 4 as we are in Australia
ojas251...... This should assist you .

To change region settings for DVD drives
1.
Open Device Manager.

2.
Double-click DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the DVD drive for which you want to change region settings, and then click Properties.

3.
On the DVD Region tab, MAKE the appropriate changes.

Important

• Because many software decoders require Direct Memory Access (DMA) in order to function, you should CHECK the settings of your Integrated Device Electronics (IDE) ATA/ATAPI controllers to ensure that DMA if available is selected in Transfer Mode. If applicable, you should also check this setting for the Secondary IDE Channel.

Notes

• To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure. For more information, see Default local groups, Default groups, and Using Run as.

• To open Device Manager, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Device Manager.

• The DVD Region tab might not be available for all DVD drives.

• To configure your DVD drive to play discs from other regions, select a geographic AREA from the list of regions. Typically, you would select the region in which you reside. It is not usually necessary to change the setting again.

• The region settings can be changed only a limited number of times. When Changes remaining equals 1, and you select a new region, an alert will be displayed warning you that after this, you will only be able to play DVDs from that region. Be aware that you might not be able to change the region setting for some DVD hardware and software decoders.

If you have exceeded the max.......a reinstall of windows will not correct the issue. And reinstalling the dvd drive will not work either , According to everything I have read .

Solve : Client services for net ware?

Answer»

Can ANYONE tell me what "Client services for net ware" is and how do you overcome it, to change log on method. And the operating system is..... Is this a home computer? And LIKE GX1 said, what OS? There's quite a few circumstances in what you said, and you may need it installed.

I can tell you what it is though. Client services for netware (CSNW) is how a client WINDOWS computer connects to a Novell server. There is also a Gateway services for netware (GSNW) which is basically the same thing only not installed on a USERS computer, instead it is installed on a remote computer which acts as a gateway to the novell server.

CSNW you log into everytime you log ONTO your comuter, GSNW you log into when you want to access the novell server.

Now if you need connectivity to a novell server then you don't want to uninstall this.

Solve : Extremely Confusing problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I've been unable to fix this problem with my computer (an HP desktop). I installed a program after it came up clean w/ symantec antivirus, but it apparently had a ton of malware (nfomon, vidmon, winstall, etc.) attached to it that nortonav didnt recognize. However, after I installed the app, norton came up with a warning of a huge list of spyware and adware, but it was unable to delete them. So I downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy, but everytime I tried to run it, the program froze, so I installed and ran ad-aware. Ad-aware said it was successful at deleting the programs, but they were still showing up in norton. I was able to delete some and quarantine some others through nortonav, but when I tried to delete one of the programs (I wish I remember which), the screen went black. I turned the monitor on and off but nothing happened so I had to turn the computer off using the power button. When I tried to restart it, the computer sounded like it was starting up as normal but then it started making this really loud grinding noise (from the HD I think, i'm not positive though), and it started beeping once ever few seconds, and just stayed like that. So I turned off and hoped that maybe it had just overheated it or something, but a second after I shut it off, the computer automatically turned back on and started doing the same thing, and I had to turn it off and unplug it from the wall to keep it from powering itself again. I have had to deal with a GOOD amount of computer problems (esp w/ this computer) but I have no idea where to even start with this. If you have any idea what is going on, please help me out.
Thanks
~ChrisNo video on the monitor at all? Grinding noises? Beeps? You have yourself a ruined HDD, or maybe a ruined operating system. For automatically turning back on that is SIMPLE. It restarted, a faulty hard drive won't let the computer stay on for long, it's a fail safe thing. When windows encounters a critical error it will automatically reboot to try and fix it.

You just happened to hit the power button at the same time that it was restarting.

Tell me one thing. Can you get to where you press f8 to enter into safe mode? If you can then maybe the malware that's CAUSING this conflict won't startup. A lot of malware won't run in safe mode, then you can run norton, spy bot and ad aware to get rid of them. Also if they're running as a process on your computer norton won't delete them.

However if you are in safe mode and they aren't running as a process norton will delete them.

One last thing for anyone that ever comes to a problem that norton won't delete malware or a virus. If you know what the process is called that is running on your computer you can go to start, run and then type in msconfig.

Then you can go in and stop the process from starting on startup. Next hit ctrl+alt+delete and go into the task manager. End the virus running as a process. Then norton shouldn't have a problem deleting it.

If you can't get into safe mode then I'd say try your hard drive in another computer as the slave drive. That way you aren't booting to it for the operating system. Then you can access it and find the problem. Also make sure you check the hard drive in the other computer to make sure you didn't infect it. Or you could use your operating systems cd and boot into the recovery console, if you have the cd. That way if you know what is was that was causing the problem you can just delete it, and hopefully that fixes it and the malware didn't just delete system files or something, in which case you will have to do a repair installation.

Depending on what operating system you are using, seeing as how you didn't mention it, some of these things may not be exact, or even work.

Good luck.Hey,
Thanks for the ideas. Sorry for not mentioning the OS I'm using. I'm running XP Home Edition SP1 on a seagate 160gb HD. Both were really recent replacements b/c the original HD that came w/ the HP had become faulty (although that was a seemingly different problem --it was reporting "Operating System Not Found" among other things).
Hope that clarifies things some more.
~ChrisI tried to goto safe mode, but the computer isn't even getting to the BIOS screen. I would assume that the beeping noise is some kind of POST message but I'm not really sure if it is or if so, what it means. I'm gonna see what I can do about booting it as slave, but I need to find my recovery disk, b/c I got my computer at the time that HP wasn't giving people XP cd's or anything else, just putting a recovery partition on the HD. Long before I even had problems with the old hd, when I tried to burn the recovery disk SET, I always came up with errors. But I'm going to see if I can find the recovery disk for this computer somewhere -- it's an HP laptop. Alright, I'll see what I can do.
THanks
~ChrisWhen it was saying operating system not found, was that before or the problem now? Did it have those errors on the last HDD or this one?

Solve : Windows Media Player Problem?

Answer»

Just the other day this strange thing has been happening. When I view video files in windows media player, the time of the video changes from the real time into some lower random number. For example, if one video had a run time of 1 minute and 24 seconds, the video will play for about 4 seconds and the run time will change to about 8 seconds. The video will play untill the BAR reaches the end at the number it changed to but the video will run untill its real time. I have no idea what to do and this effects my editing because the videos cut out and mess everything up. Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks.I have never heard of this error before but here are some GUESSES that may help you:

1) Open Windows Media Player and choose Tools, then Options.

2) On the Performance tab, make SURE "Use default buffering" is selected.

3) On the Privacy tab, make sure "Set clock on devices automatically" is selected.

If the problem persists, try reinstalling Windows Media Player. This should reset all the settings to their default.
Sometimes the answer is to ignore the problem... You could try using FREE third party media players instead. My favorite are VLC player found at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and Media player classic found at http://tinyurl.com/24pdk (links to sourceforge). Hope that helped. Are these videos you create or download? Do they work OK then they don't? I have downloaded several videos that say 2 minutes to play then once the bar runs out, they keep going and going.Nothing seems to be working. All of the settings are set to default and I tried reinstalling. The videos that this is happening to are the ones I record with Pinnacle Studios. You may have encoded the files with a codec that is unreadable by your player. This could be due to using a strange format, a corrupt codec or a bad encoding application process (including hardware).

It can also be caused by a bad player.

If your player otherwise works (with other files & types), then I would suspect your encoding process is the problem.

- try reinstalling your application software & codecs
- try another format
- try another application
- make sure you have the processing power to create these files (speed, memory, etc.).

I assume you have created these files successfully in the past. If so, have you made any system changes that may account for processing problems (memory, drives, OS, etc.)?

DellAfter I captured some video I found out that the MPEG format runs normally but the AVI format doesn't. I took the AVI file and put it into the recycling bin, took it out, and it played normally. What is going on?Hmmm...GOOD question!

Obviously something is different or changed. First it doesn't work, then it does.

Some possibilities:

- long file names or placement of the files can have an effect on playback, especially if the file is buried deep in some subfolder. Some OS have limitations on address length (255, I believe) including the file name. If this is a possibility with your file(s), try shorter names or move them closer to your root drive.

- conflicting codec(s) or applications. Try playback without other applications started or running (no more than one player or application).

- open the file from the player vs opening the player with the file (or vice versa). This can sometimes solve several possible problems (codec(s), addressing, etc.)

I'll see if I can find other possibilities.

DellI guess we were both right about one thing. It was the subfolder it was in that made it not play right. I simply moved them into another folder and they play perfectly. Thanks a bunch guys!

Solve : Autoplay Doesn't Work?

Answer»

I have two optical drives in my PC. A DVD-ROM and a CD-RW. When I insert a disk it doesn't Autoplay, and when I click Explore it lists the files that were on the disk that was previously in there, not the new one I've just inserted. HENCE I am unable to install any programs that come on multiple disks. If I leave the disk in and reboot, the new disk appears. This happens with ALL disks.

Chain of events:
Start the PC with Call Of Duty 2, Disk 1 already in the drive. EVERYTHING works fine.
Eject. The drive icon shows the drive to be empty (no problem there).
Insert Disk 2, close the drive. The drive icon still shows Disk 1.
Click Explore. The disk contents displays the files from Disk 1, not Disk 2 which is currently in there.
Leave Disk 2 in the drive and reboot. Everything is happy.

Clicking View-->Refresh doesn't work.
Going into Properties and Restoring Defaults doesn't work.
Installing SP2, the only option Microsoft Support recommends, didn't work.

The problem is the same for both drives, which indicates to me this isn't a hardware issue. No recent hardware changes and, of course, no viruses. Anybody?
Hopester Doofus..... Is this something which just started ?

dl65 It started a couple of months ago when just the Autoplay feature didn't work, and attempts to reset the defaults failed to solve the problem. Today was the first time it wouldn't "see" a newly inserted disk unless I rebooted.

Weird thing is, it sees the disk. It just sees the last disk that was inserted, not the new one.It does sound like a WIN Explorer/Navigator related problem.

Since it occurs with both of your drives, at least you can handle a 2 disk load. Just boot with disk 1 in a drive and disk 2 in the other drive (assuming your files/programs are on CD and not DVD).

As a temporary solution, try to 'drag and drop' each disk to your hard drive (right button-whole disk copy) until you have all the disks copied. Boot them/install from the HD. Seems you should be able to do this even if the wrong contents are displayed from your optical drive(s).

None of these solve your underlying problem. I'd try a Restore or reinstall of your OS and service packs to eliminate corrupted files or registry as the cause.

DellNot the first time we hear of this. An idea for a Q&A query?

What if you simply reinstall CD/DVD drivers?Quote

Not the first time we hear of this. An idea for a Q&A query?

What if you simply reinstall CD/DVD drivers?

Never in my life have I had to install a driver for an optical drive. I might have to make this a first.Windows does it for you. Remove the entries from the device manager and the devices will be redetected/reinstalled upon startup. Keep your OS CD at hand if you're using a pre-XP OS.This seems to have worked for others:

Quote
1. Enable Auto Insert Notification for CD Drives
Some programs will disable this default setting to play inserted CDs automatically! Roxio applications do this; for example! To re-enable this FUNCTIONALITY >>>
• Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
• Double-click Autorun
• Make SURE the value is set to "1" under Value Data.
• Navigate to the following registry key:

You should now be able to pop in a CD, and WinXP should pop up the autoplay menu and attempt to autorun the CD.

In the case of a fresh load, of course that would be inconsequential. there will be .dbx files and maybe others from each of your folders - in, out, etc. i just keep a separate directory called outlook and let the default be to save them there. i tmakes it VERY easy to backup the WHOLE directory later.

You can backup and save your favorites in internet explorer the same way.I don't use outlook very much but isn't there .psb and .PST files that NEED to be saved as well?Go to Tools-->OPTIONS-->Maintenance tab and click Store folder. This is the folder where all your messages are stored.

Copy this folder where you want and from Import , you can restore them with no overwriting or loss.

Hope Helps.

Solve : How do I undelete accidentally deleted files??

Answer»

The other day my younger sister got a windows XP alert pop-up telling her that the computer was almost out of disk space. It suggested she perform disk cleanup to free up space. She did this and deleted a BUNCH of stuff that shouldn't have been deleted (Internet EXPLORER, ActiveShield, Microsoft games, and others). I tried to perform a system restore to a date before she made these changes but all the system restore dates before the unwanted changes had been deleted as well.

Is there anyway to recover or undelete what was lost during the disk cleanup? Or at least is there a way to find out exactly what was deleted so I would know what had to be replaced or reinstalled?

Thanks to anyone who can helpTry Easy Recovery.
You can also try running SFC /scannow which will check XP system files and replace them if they are missing or corrupt...have your XP CD handy as it might request it.

Solve : Changed the way a program opens?

When opening a much needed program in MS Excell, I found it had been CONVERTED somehow (gremlins) to Notepad which is entirely useless now. Anyway to change it back? Or do I have to redo the entire file?

My "open with" command is even listed when I RIGHT-click the file. (Usually is.........)Ok what you want to do is go to your file,

Right click

properties

then you will see open with and a Notepad, and a change button. Change it back to Excel.

R0SSThat's the PROBLEM.....I don't have that option in properties.Does this option NOT show for ONLY this file, or do other files give you this option?

FlameJust this file. Checked another file. Usually when I right-click on a file, I can use the "open with" option.the file might be corrupt then,

Or have a virus..

Scan it.

Solve : PC will not boot - corrupt file?

Answer»

Hello, I messed up our 4 year old computer!! Tried to restore to a previous time. Not what I wanted, undid the restore. DELETED LOTS of FILES from the recycle bin. Did a reboot.....

now comes up....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\system32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to recover .....

I have the original operating system CD and try the restore..... I can't get past the administrator password.

Also, I really need to save the info on this harddrive. My QUICKBOOKS, etc. is on there!!

any ideas? Greatly appreciate the help.
I did pick up a second harddrive but I don't think 'I' want to mess with that. (Making a new harddrive then setting the 'original' one as a slave...)

B&BI meant the "repair" option from the windows XP operating cdI found help!

I used the recovery mode (which comes up to the DOS prompt)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545

I "think" what I did, was create a new users, I was able to see all the files on the computer, copied new system32\config files from the last "good" restore point. Moved them over to where they needed to be.

My computer booted up OK and all my files, etc are there. All I can say is HOLLY SMOKES!!

[emailprotected]!
You got lucky, but congratulations. This would indicate a need to backup our files on a regular basis, eh?

Solve : HELP ME PLEASE!!!?

Answer»

My computer had all kinds of pop-ups and random toolbars that appeared on it so I went to the control PANEL and started removing programs. The only problem is that I think I removed something VITAL because now when I turn the computer on, I get the blue Windows 98 screen and then a red screen pops up and says:

NAV Auto-Protect
Unable to determine the location of the CONFIGURATION files.

[ok]

Then when I press enter it brings up a black screen that prompts me to enter my user name and then my product KEY (which may or not be at my home but since I'm at school I haven't checked).

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO???I'm making an emergency trip home and taking my computer with me so thank you verymuch. I'll have my dad TRY it.

Solve : Another way to backup registry??

Answer»

My dad's eMachine just got hit with a nasty, sophisticated virus that Norton Internet Security couldn't stop, Norton AntiVirus can't find, Ad-Aware 6 can't find, and our Spyware blocker cannot detect. And it's SLOWING down that computer to unbelievably slow speeds. It's almost unusable, and my dad is fairly lucky I saw this coming a while back and backed up his documents... anyhow, I use the Internet very heavily, so I am a LITTLE worried about this myself. I just got done investing, what, $1,000 in the zMachine I put together, and if I get hit...

I did create a Restore Point, and will periodicly, but I don't always have the best of LUCK with System Restore. Sometimes, actually, about 45% of the time, it fails to load the Restore point, and I am skewed. Is there another way on WINDOWS XP Home Edition to back up the Registry in case I download a game PATCH that is infected with this thing, or worse?

It is a TOSHIBA Satellite M35X-S149. Its RUNNING Windows xp home. The video chipset is Intel.

I have hooked it up to a monitor and it worked perfectly, but im trying to find a soultion for when I'm away from home.So you basically want to shrink the viewable image down to a size that can be dragged to what little bit of screen you have left. Is that it?You just need to "restore" the displayed windows to any size you want, as simple as that, isn't it?Quote

Solve : Autocheck?

Answer»

Everytime I boot up it say's "autochk program not found-skipping AUTOCHECK".Then everything works fine.
OS 2K pro.
Does ANYONE have any ideas?
Thanx,
tomas far as i know. If it isnt effecting your computer then it shouldnt be a problem.

If its really irritatiing you then you could TRY installing a fresh copy of WINDOWS.autochk.exe is a part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It ALLOWS funcationality to revert core system settings BACK to their origional state, and to backup where necessary. This program is a non-essential system process and should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

You should have autochk.exe in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and in your hidden C:\I386 folder or on your CD.

Your OS is probably trying to run - chkdsk
