Yeah, I notice that if you have a bunch of stuff open when you shut down it will have to close them all first which means it uses the "End Task" function which, I've noticed, takes forever to end the task...Assuming you're on XP as am I.

Also, go with what was mentioned about startup PROGRAMS. To see what it starting up when you boot up, go to Start>Run... and type in "msconfig" without the quotations. Click the "Startup" tab and see how many things you've checked.

Chances are: if you got your computer from a rent-to-own place then it will have a bunch of their programs on their for some reason. Unchecking some or all of these won't kill your computer but it may cause soem things to not run correctly or at all. All I have slected to startup is my Anti-Virus and Volume Control. Only have what you occasionally-to-always use start up. Otherwise you're just loading programs for no reason which is a waste of RAM and CPU speed.

Not to mention, the more programs it opens at start up means the more programs that are open all together. The more programs which are open when you shut down, the longer it will take to shut down.

Observe your shut down sequence, too. See what comes up on the screen and relay that back to us.Hello all hands.
merry x-mass to all.
thanks for your help.
im going for search and destroy exercise up the mountains for two weeks and i check the pc later.

Solve : I/O subsystem driver?

Answer»

HELP!!!

Yes, of course I deleted the wrong things!! I really thought I was careful on my laptop. So, I cleaned some things up and obviously screwed up.

Error message:

While initializing device IOS:
Error: An I/O SUBSYSTEM driver failed to load. Either a file in the .\iosubsys sbdirectory is corrupt, or the system is low on memory.

Somewhere in my trying to solve this, I got something about himem something.

I have the windows 98 disc, if that helps. If I have to, I realize I MAY have to start over.

But, please help if possible!!

Thanks,

SueCan you boot to safe mode?THank you. No, everytime I choose that option, that's when it goes through Windows start up and then to the black screen with the error message above.I believe you will need to re-install your MBoard drivers on that laptop...did you recieve a CD with it when you purchased it ? ?
If not you will have to travel to the manuf' site.

patio. Another thought...there is a non-destructive way to re-install Win98 without losing all your files and settings. All it takes is some basic DOS commands so post back if this is the way you decide to go...
Does that laptop have a floppy drive?

patio. THanks! No, the laptop was a used one. But, yes, if I can put win 98 back on, that sounds great! I can handle dos commands, but I've been trying some things and am not sure if I'm right. I can't SEEM to do cd to my floppy or cd drive. And the command prompt for "C" looks like this: C:\>. Is that right?

So, floppy and CD. But only have the CD for win 98.

Please let me know what's next when you have time. I don't really care about any other programs on the laptop, but 2 LARGE files in Word that I've been working on for work, and would LOVE to get them back.

Oh, thanks so much! You can also boot from a Linux Live CD and then copy the files to a floppy for safety. It writes nothing to your hard drive and then later you can reinstall Windows (if you must). Save the data first!

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=58Try doing a "dirty" install. Boot from the windows CD and start the installation process. Be sure to have the product key handy. Windows should install over top of itsself without deleteing data. Pay attention to the install directory and be sure to use the original directory. (c:\windows and not c:\windows001 or similar).I can't seem to boot from the cd. I guess I don't know what to do!

Thanks, SueThe CD if it's an original should be bootable, can you change your boot priority in the BIOS ? ?
If not HEAD over to bootdisk.com and DLoad a win98SE custom boot disk.
This file needs to be extracted to a clean floppy first.
Then boot up with the floppy in and choose "Start machine with CDRom support"
You're drive letters will all bump up by one letter except for C:
in other words if you're CDRom is currently D: it will become E:...this is because the bootdisk installs a temporary RAM drive for the diagnostic tools.
At the A: prompt type C: and hit enter.
Rename win.com to win.old and hit enter.
Now from the C: prompt type E: and hit enter this will log your CDRom drive.
At the E: prompt type setup and hit enter and the setup process should begin.

IMPORTANT: at some point early on Windows setup will ask you where you want to install to and the default listing will be Windows 000 or something of that nature...this happens because it has already detected a previous install.
Don't select the default or you will wind up with 2 ver. of Win98, instead type in C:\Windows and it will re-install into your current Windows directory without overwriting all your info.

You may need to re-install some of the laptop drivers such as video etc.

Now retrieve and back up the Word files you needed and you should be good to go...

Hope this helps,
patio. Thank you so much. I did end up paying someone to come out. I'm not sure if he used your info here that I gave him, but he did restore it all.

YIPPEE!

THanks again for being there for us newbies/screw-ups. And, $80 later it won't happen again!

Solve : Windows Activation?

Answer»

Windows XP recently prompted me to activate it even though I've been USING it for 2 years now. When I TRIED to reactivate it using the old code windows told me the code was not valid. Now it says windows will no longer run after 2 more weeks. What should I do?

Do you have the original winxp cd and is it legal? Why or how were you prompted to activate? Have you added new hardware and what do you mean by old code?

G1:

Call the PHONE NUMBER that appears in the Windows Activation display. When you reach the Microsoft support technician, explain the problem. She will ask you for the product key (it will on the sticker affixed to the case of your computer, or with the booklet that came with your Microsoft Windows XP CD).

The tech will give you a code to enter to unlock your operating SYSTEM.

I've noticed a performance loss since this has happened. Anyone know what it is and how i can fix it?I would suggest opening the cover and trying to ISOLATE where the sound is coming from.

Solve : Registry Warning on Startup?

Answer»

I've had a warning on startup for some time now and have decided to try to do SOMETHING about it.

I deleted a program long ago. Now when I start my computer up, I get a registry warning telling me it can find this .exe file. Then when I close that window it warns me that I should remove it from the registry.

I have done a search on my computer for this file. I have typed in registry and searched as well as the original program name. I really don't know where to look for this.

Can anyone tell me where this reference to this old program would be located & what would be safe to delete. (In plain english please. I am not a computer genious :-/)

Thank youIt would be helpful to post the specific warning word for word as well.Hijackthis would be a quick WAY to find it.Here is a copy of the original warnings as requested:

First Window (To pop up):

Name: C:\EASYPH~1\REGISTER\remind.exe

Windows cannot find 'C:\EASYPH~1\REGISTER\remind.exe'. Make SURE you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start BUTTON, and then click search.

OK
____________________________
Second Window (To pop up):

Name: DESKTOP

Could not load or run 'C:\EASYPH~1\REGISTER\remind.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

OK

This was an old PHOTOGRAPHY program in case that makes any difference. These warnings pop up just after the Windows XP page shows up and before anything else can load.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.Quote

This entry can be in many different places so the trick is to find it & remove it.
Download & run a Hijackthis scan & the resulting logfile will make it easy for you to find.
http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
You can also use Hijackthis to remove the entry for you.Hi Everyone,

Well I downloaded TuneUP Utilities and it also came with 1-click Maintenance. I tried to delete it through the TuneUP Utilities twice but it didn't correct the problem. Mind you, if found 991 errors. Anyway, the 1-click Maintenance allowed me to search for the file name and I deleted it. This solved the problem. Now for the other 990? :-/

Can't thank you all enough for all your great assistance.

Solve : IP address error?

Answer»

I use a linksys wireless card to connect to the internet, and whenever I restart my computer I can never GET on the web unless I right click on Wirless Connection 2 (linksys) and hit repair. Then it repairs and renews my IP address. My problem is that often times as I am on the web that an error message shows up saying "There is a conflict with another IP address on the network" or something similar to that.

Now I tried to open up a propmt using
nbtstat -A
but when I do this the command prompt quickly flashes and will not display for me.

Can anyone HELP me please fix this IP address problem, I'm tired of getting logged of the internet.
Thanks! How many other pc's do you have on your network?
Are they all set to obtain ip and dns server addresses automatically?

Do your pc's and router have DHCP enabled?

Try using XP's in built network troubleshooter.
Start> Help & Support> Fixing a Problem> Networking Problems> Diagnose Network Configuration and run automated networking TESTS> Scan your system.

See what results you get.We have 3 computers connected to a router, all through wireless connections. The other computers do not have this problem, just mine. I believe everything is set up to obtain addresses automatically. As for DHCP enabled, I'm not familiar with this term and don't know where to check.
The scan reported a GTW modem and network adapters failed.

In the last hour alone I probably had a dozen warnings come up of this IP address problem and three of these times I was logged off the web. What operating system?

This problem sounds to me as though your computer has a static IP and the router gave the same IP out to one of the other computers on your network.

A quick check to see if there is actually another IP on the network the same as yours is to click the start button, select run and type in CMD(in XP and Win2k). Then type this into the command prompt:

ipconfig /all

This command will show you whether or not DHCP is enabled or not on your computer. Also if your IP comes up as all zeroes then there is a duplicate IP on the network.I have XP.

Ok, I did this and here's some info it told me:

IP routing enabled-NO
WINS proxy enabled-NO
DHcp enabled-YES
The default Gateway and DHCP server are the same address, while my IP address is something different. None of them are all 0's.

Lease obtained today and expires tomorrow.Your DHCP is running fine. The default gateway and the DHCP are the same because they are the same thing, the router. The router is your default gateway and it is also responsible for IP addressing.

Do you have a known good spare network adapter? Try swapping that for the one in your computer now, see if that makes a difference. Your NIC may be failing. No I don't have a spare network adapter. How much would one run and how do I go about setting this all up?They're not that expensive. Perhaps you could borrow one from one of the other computers, temporarily?

Either way they are simple to swap out. Do you have experience changing adapter cards in your PC?

Remeber to ground yourself.I REALLY have no skills what so ever when it comes to computers. All I want is for this dang error message to stop popping up and logging me off.Who is your ISP. SOme have a max numbers of PC's that connect via DHCP. Cox is 3 for instance. When a fourth comes on at my house the same error messages fluorish.

Hello! My name is Kisha and I need some serious help with my home PC. I have windows ME and when I try to start the computer it boots up like normal then it goes to the white screen with the windows ME logo like normal and stays there. It doesn't MOVE after that. I had this problem before and it was fixed but I don't remember what I did to fix it. If anyone can help me please email me at

[emailprotected]

Thank you,

Kisha This is Kisha again, the message that is appearing on my screen is:

"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %1: %2"

I have even tried to start it in safe MODE but it goes back to the windows could not upgrade the file.

PLEASE HELP ME I'M DESPERATE!

ThanksKisha here is what i would try first...if you have access to another machine which i'm sure you do since you're posting TRAVEL to bootdisk.com and DLoad a WinME bootdisk.
This will need to be unzipped to a clean floppy.
Next on the CORRUPT machine insert the floppy and power up...choose "boot the machine with CDRom support and hit Enter...
At the A: prompt type sys C: and hit Enter, this happens fast.
Next remove the floppy and re-boot and it should startup normally.
If not post back as there is a way to repair WinME without losing all your settings and data.

Mekisha:

See if you are able to start your computer in safe mode. If you are, then we may assume it is a bad driver or startup program and will tell you how to use the Windows ME Sytem Configuration utility to fix the problem.

When you turn on the computer, and before you see the Windows ME logo, press the F8 key. A menu will ask you to choose the startup option, move the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Let us know if you are able to get to the desktop in safe mode. M_2, Patio, or i will tell you what to do next.

Best regards,
DocHey PcDoc,

I got to the page where it says safe mode and I pressed it and nothing has happened. It's on the windows ME screen and its just staying there...I just pressed escape and the same sign that I was before is on the screen "windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2. What should I do now?Zeta:

Follow the instructions found at this LINK to the Microsoft web site:

Blessings to you,
DocDoc,

First let me say that I thank God for you. The Lord has truely given you a gift of wisdom, unselfishness and a wonderful talent. I will be praying for you when I go to church this Sabbath (saturday) that God will continue to bless you and use you.

Now, for some reason I can't find my Windows ME CD rom. I moved from New York to Alabama last July so I could have lost it during the move. I am going 2 see if I can borrow, burn or buy one. Once I get the cd I think it will fix the computer. So I will let you know what's going on as soon as I can get a copy. Do u know of a place online where I can download it?

Blessings,

Solve : Norton 2003?

I have uninstalled Norton and DONT get the message when i Restart, but as soon as i install it again i get the message. This is a new computer just built today, it has xp home and all the latest stuff PCIE ect. Do you think i need the latest Norton virus or is there somthing i can do about this.Norton SEEMS to be the problem then, so uninstall and avoid the current crop of Norton products. AVG is as good and is....free! (Plus it doesn't eat up your system resources.)If he just purchasd it, I doubt he's gonna wanna get rid of it just like that.

Before you shutdown, close down Norton and that should fix the problem (if I think I know what you're talking about). There's probably a proper fix somewhere, someone who uses it might be able to assist you.

Is this a virus program or a MALWARE addware program?. Doesnt seem to scan for viruses for me. Do you have a LINK for the virus program. and it says trial. Is it a trial.

Any help would be good.AVG Free is an Antivirus program and as the name suggests, it's free.

Scroll to almost the bottom of the page (they hide it)
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1There is a 30-day trial for a fully-functional version of AVG. The freeware version has no limits.

The differences between the two can be found here. (PDF file, direct link)

with regardsCrafty...... The Norton 2003 you have is either a 45 or 90 day trial and I would suspect it has already run its course . thats the reason it wont scan for you .

Crafty, I was at the Norton website yesterday looking for someone else, I notice there is a 'special' program or way to uninstall your Norton.
When you have it completely removed do a registry search for some key words... Norton, Symantec etc.
Norton is a virus for sure.

Solve : Can I remove the partition?

Answer»

Hi all again,
I have a 80gb DRIVE which is partitioned into two 40gb drives C & D, what I would like to know is can I REMOVE the partition from my (80gb) drive to make it a 80gb MASTER and if so will there be any problems !!
thanks
NedHi Mac,
This one below sounds good, but could you give me a idot's giude on how to do it please as I am not up to speed on all this.
also can I leave all my programs etc where they are without reinstalling them !!
Thanks
Ned

delete the D: drive, delete the Extended partition (outlined in green) delete the C: drive and make a new C: drive using the full 80 GB.

Since you are obviouslyh new to this, the thing to remember is that by using any of these tools there is a chance of losing all of your data. If you want to proceed just be sure and back up anything you may want first.

I am curious why you would want to do these partition manipulations. What is the goal of having one big partition? The thing is I have a large number of photographs stored on my “D” drive which is the other partitioned half of “C” drive, Now if xp or any of the programs has a fault that means I have to reboot the drive I loose all my photos etc, But if I put them on a new hard drive they will be safe, but there will be 40 GB wasted!!
Or is there a better way!!!!
Thanks for all your help
Ned
If they are that important they need to be backed up on CD anyway. All hard drives die eventually, and if yours goes, so do the photos.

The 40 gig on the D drive is perfectly usable as is. Again, I don't understand the need to remove it and make one big partition. 80 gig is 80 gig usable space, no matter how it is partitioned.Hello ned1,
As I understand: 40 Gb for OS is too much for you, in case of failure you'll loose everything from this partition.
But I've found the solution:
I had 40&40Gb HDD,
I used Acronis Disk Director and resize the partitions,
so now I have 1 partition only for OS,apps - 20 GB, and the REST 60GB for storage (I keep there photo, VIDEO and other needed data). By the way duging resizing the partitions I didn't loose any data!
As for backup, it's better to create and image from OS partition, it'll give you possiability to restore your OS partition from image without damage other partition.

First of all, only single thread is good.

How did you backed it up. Did you TRY using restore option from Windows?

You backed it up through Windows back up utility.

Solve : Question marks next to Other Devices...?

Answer»

Friend's COMPUTER didn't boot. Normal startup and Last Known GC showed only black screen without a dot for minutes and nothing...
I have REINSTALLED Win Xp Sp2 on that computer. After formatting NTFS Partition C and installing XP there are question marks next to
Other Devices(?!)
--Multimedia Audio Contreller(?!)
-----PCI Modem(?!)
---------Video COntroler (VGA)(?!)

and of course there's no sound, but video exists.

SHouldn't XP recognize them automatically? What are the possible reasons? You need drivers for the sound, modem and video adapter. By default Windows with use a 1 meg PCI EQUIVALENT with a whopping 16 colors. No, Windows will not know what they are on a new install, unless the drivers were widely available before Windows was released (4-5 years ago). Since this is not the case, you will need to identify the components and go find the drivers. (Everest Home Edition at majorgeeks.com)

Do you know the computer or motherboard make/model? the video card? Thanks GX,
I knew it was driver just wondered reason. because never happened with me before with XP.

I used everest and know components and found drivers on net. Thought I COULD try sth else from installing driver. I 'll do what you say... You're welcome. Have a merry Christmas!Windows XP doesn't carry drivers for every device that's in existance. You wouldn't want to EITHER, because Windows drivers are horrible.Quote

They are SIS. Are they any good? We don't have positive image about SIS here

lol
Is there the specific list that XP supports? I mean drivers. How can one tell for which device XP has built in driver?

Merry Christmas to you all!

Let xp autodetect the device & see if it has drivers for it.

Solve : XP freezes about one minute after reboot?

Answer»

XP pro freezes in one to three minutes after I reboot with no applications running.
Num Lock light will go off and on with toggle. Hard drive light is ACTIVE for a couple of minutes but then goes to a steady blink-the cursor will not activate anything and eventually I get an hourglass that NEVER goes away until I reboot.
Does not freeze in Safe Mode
I have defragged and run memtest--OK
Was able to nurse it through Norton update and a CURRENT SCAN--found no viruses.
Once I GOT the virus scan going it did a complete scan-5-10 minutes and did not freeze??

BOXX computer with Dual XEON 3.06 with 4 GB ram (ram from BOXX) Nvidia Quadro FX 1000 128MB graphics card with 2 73GB 10000 rpm scsi drives XP Pro.

The unit is under warranty, and the manufacturer is sending me 2 new drives (one with new OS installed). However, I somehow do not believe the drives are the problem and I may lose all of my programs and data for nothing.
Suggestions greatly appreciated.
Roger
I would think it would of been a virus.

Your computer should be very fast with those specs.

Try another virus scan like the trend micro house call.
Norton is no good it never finds anything that's why i got rid of it a year ago.

Solve : how to make program for windows XP?

Answer» HI,

I'm not sure if this is feasible with windows XP Pro. What i would like to do is write a program that can get windows OS to do things we want it to.

Frankly, i would like to be able to have a button that's programmed to set up file permission security for our staffs on XP Pro. For example, we have folders to be shared on the network. Each drives has folders and files that i want to give a certain access to a certain group of people.

So ideally, we have an icon on a desktop or something that i can click. LET's say an icon. Once the icon is double-clicked, a popup window appear prompting for password and/or username. If the password given is correct, windows will automatically set up the permission access to certain people behind the scene.

For example, management folder only access by admin group, computers folder by SYSTEM admin and so on.

So it sets these all up without us seeing it happening.

Wonder if anyone would suggest me how to do this?

Thank you in ADVANCE and look forward to hearing from you.
This is a builtin feature of XP Pro anyway.

When you create the files/folders you set the PERMISSIONS. You will have already created the groups you want to use within the company and then add that group to the file/folder permissions.

No need for username/passwords as XP already knows if they have been granted access.

Solve : disabled monitor?

Answer»

i accidentally DISABLED my monitor and now i dont know how to enable it. It does not have another way to connect another monitor. Unplugged it? Disabled in Windows? You see nothing on screen?

BOOT into safe mode (F8 repeatedly a startup) and see if you can rectify the situation or do a system restore to before this faux pas.All MENTION of 'System Restore' in the forums should come with a disclaimer advising of the possible removal of Windows updates including Service Packs and user installed DRIVER updates.
IMO in the wrong hands 'System Restore' can be devastating.Good plan!

roughly thats it. thnxIt is always helpful to know specifics about the computer, operating system and spyware/adware/virus solutions in place and being used, as well as when this problem started and any other changes made at that time. Frequesntly problems are CAUSED by unsafe computing practices.

You need to start by checking for scumware by using AdAware, Spybot and CCleaner (all are free, just google for them) Then GO to trendmicro.com and use the free online virus scanner. When you are sure your system is clean, report back what you have found.im sorry im new to all this. :-/ i am using mcafee virus protection. i think it also has spywar protection. i have a COMPAC presario. the problem started about a week ago, i havent done anything different than usual. sorry about the non specifics.running window xp also using cosmi spyware killer. thanks i will try all of the things listed.i used the applications listed, but using the adware program, it lists all the adware and spyware listed, but doesnt deleted them without buying the program. any other suggestions? thxthank youAdAware and Spybot are free and they remove items they find. Solve : Restart...Restart...Restart..and on it goes?

Answer»

OK, so I just built a new system for the first time, and I know this has been discussed before, and I have read those posts, but I'm still at a frustrated state. Any help would be the ballz on this ONE.
When I turn my computer on it goes through all the BIOS processes (extremely quickly, however) and then for a brief second flashes the Windows XP loading screen with some sort of text up top on a blue background. The whole screen shot is only up there for a c-hair of a second, so it's near impossible to make out more than a couple words. The best I've been able to make out are "If this problem..." in a second paragraph. (I know I've seen this blue background of text before but can't remember what for). Then a BASIC DOS type page comes up as if the computer wasn't shut down correctly. "The power switch has been tripped or the power was cut off somehow blah, blah, blah......" This page gives me the options to boot in Safe Mode, Last Known Good Settings, or just START Normally. None of these yield any results other than the XP startup page flashes again with some gibberish and the computer reboots itself. It would go on for hours if I let it.
It's a new case and power supply - though a cheap power supply of 430W - it came with the cheap case.
A new Jetway ATX socket 478 motherboard.
A refurbished Pentium 4 2.4GHz processor (though through false advertisement I have learned that the board is only made for 1.5-2.2 GHz) and I know that the heat levels remain low with all the fans I have. I've checked the PC Health in the BIOS setup and it remains at 100-102 F
I've got 512MB DDR and have tried switching to 128MB SD and 256 SD seperately and have had the same results. So the dead RAM theory is probably out the window.
The HD is almost empty except for the XP operating system, and I have switched that out as well for a like size model with the same operating system. The same result still comes about. So, the corrupt operating system theory is probably out the window.
64MB graphics card and a small soundcard are the only other things in the computer.
The only brand new thing is the motherboard, so maybe some BIOS setting is off or something? I thought I reviewed then fairly carefully the first time through......

It's almost as if as soon as the system is required to initiate the operating system it draws on too much of something (power?) and the computer shuts off to preserve itself from damage.
I have booted it up with the same results after disconnecting all the smaller energy draining items like fans, etc.
Just a crap PSU? That would be too simple, though I wouldn't complain...........

Any help is much appreciated.

Jdemon13......Has this pc ever functioned properly .....
it sounds like it must have or you wouldnt have been able to load XP ......( or did you use the HD from another pc) . Let clear this up and then we can proceed .

dl65 Thanks man.
Both HD's are from earlier pc's and I know they are both solid units. 20-30GB each , both with XP and both with very little else but the operating system on them. I have another built pc that they both work fine in.
The motherboard, case, and PSU are new in the mail.
The HD's, CPU and RAM are all from other comps.
demon13.... Is there any reason that you didnt install XP fresh on a blank formatted hard drive ..... If you are 100 % certain you have the MOBO setup properly ........I would be wiping one of the Hard drives you have and then install XP .....because unless the mobo your using now and the mobo on the old pc are the same you will have issues .......You have to remember that XP knew what the configuration on the old pc was and its looking for that on the new one and its differant ...hence the errors .

dl65 Well........no, they're not the same motherboard models. That would make some sense, but now we're getting into some territory that has me a little reluctant. How load a fresh XP system (which I have on hand, but I think it's just the upgrade) onto a HD when the system won't boot. I've upgraded them, but obviously starting from scratch will be a different story.
I know we are getting off topic now, so I won't get any further into asking you to walk me through the rest of the beta I don't have solid experience with.
This makes clear sense to you then? Neither HD came from the motherboard type I am installing them on.
Won't certain manually CHOSEN BIOS configurations allow for the HD to do it's thing? or does the HD conform itself to the board during an installation of the operating system?I think I may have found some good info......
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html#1
if this is no good please advise....
Thanks.
Jdemon13......The easiest way to install XP is to have a clean hard drive ........Then go into the bios ( Tap F8 repeated at start up ) ...........change the boot sequence to cdrom first ...save changes and exit .........now put the Xp cd in the cd drive and reboot ....XP is bootable and will begin to load ...and that should do it for you .

dl65 My first born's name is gonna be Dee-elle-sixtyfive.demon13..... LOL ......hopefully everthing will work fine for you now.

dl65 Rule #1 is never just put a hard drive with a Windows operating system into a new motherboard setup and expect it to work properly. You can get by with that with Linux, but not Windows.

Solve : Outlook - password problem?

Answer»

I am using MS XP Professional and have Outlook 2002. Whenever I access my e-mail, I keep getting a pop-up window asking me for my network password. When I type in the password, it just pops up again and ASKED the same question over and over again about EVERY second. For some reason it is not remembering my password. Can someone help me?One famous reason for that.

You are typing password wrongly. Check all the conditions IE CAPS LOCK etc.

Were you able to log in before? When did it start to deny?

Are you in network? That may be your mail server's and also your outlook's password either.

Try to type both of them.

Thanks for the response. Comcast is my ISP and I have been over this with them in detail. Yes, I am sure that I am typing the password correctly and that I am using the proper case. I have been over this with the technical staff at comcast as well as with a FREIND of mine that is an IT professional. Nobody can explain what is causing problem. All I know is that it is absolutely driving me nuts.Have you tried this

This is very common problem it seems.

Thats an old system xp home/pro......five/six years old....You can try to reinstall the drivers for your USB drives or troubleshoot. Do this by going into your Device Manager (Start>Settings>Control Panel>System...under the Hardware Tab, choose Device Manager and select Troubleshoot). You can also uninstall the drivers under the Drivers Tab.

Reboot your PC without the drives connected. After boot, plug in one drive and let the system detect it and reinstall the drivers. When finished, plug in the other USB drive and follow the same procedures.

Solve : Windows media player 10?

Answer»

Hopefully this is the right forum for this question.

I created a WINDOWS media audio/visual file in photoshtory 3. It plays on my windows media player 10. I was planning on BURNING this to disc and sending it to friends and family. That's my wife's idea for a non-traditional x-mas card this year.

My assumption is that any version of windows media player should be able to PLAY this file.

My concern is just people that get the disc and are not able to play it and never SEE it.

Any thoughts or feedback are appreciated.

Solve : Temperature?

Answer»

what temperature should my chips be at to be SAFE?
and how many rpm should my fan be doing?

[glb]FireChaser[/glb]FireChaser........Well , you havent given us any info re your "chip" ......are you REFERING to the CPU or the other chips ?
The best way to determine the design perameters for the CPU (if thats what you want ) WOULD be to go to the manufactures site and check the specifications. I would think that if your cpu temp is somewhere between say 35 C and 75 C it's fine ....some chips run even hotter .
As far as the fan rpm is concerned.......which fan are you refering to ......the CPU cooling fan , the PSU cooling fan , the case fans or possibly the cooling fan on the vid card ( if it has one )

let us know

IF INTERNET EXPLORER OPENS A CERTAIN APPLICATION BY DEFAULT,

I CAN CHANGE IT THROUGH EXPLORER>FOLDER OPTION> FILE TYPES

WHERE I CAN SEE INTERNET EXPLORER IS NAMED AS IExplore.

How i should know that name of internet explorer? I can not see it by looking at properties of I.E.

IF i am to change that default opener to MS word

what name to give to MS word, like IExplore??When you get to the "Opens with" WINDOW Word should be one of the CHOICES listed in the drop down menu...if it is not listed choose "Other" which will open an Explorer type window and from there you need to find the Word executable, probably under MSOffice/Word.

patio. 1) Ok, here is another question to ask:

I have let known that while pressing right mouse button on a file or folder,

if i press "shift" key i will get a "open with " menu in the context menu.

But that do not happen ALWAYS, because, by doing that, sometimes i get
the same context menu as that you get when you right click on the desktop.

2) How do i know that IExplore is the name of Internet Explorer?

Because that's the name Bill Gates gave it...
as to the keyboard shortcuts to launch open with why not just do it the normal way until you get things sorted...

Solve : seekeyboard problems?

Answer»

I was trying out a new wireless keyboard and laser mouse from Microsoft and decided I needed to have a wired mouse for faster response time as I am a graphic artist. I (stupidly) just unplugged the receiver and then PLUGGED in my old MS Natural keyboard. I thought a reboot WOULD make it pick it up- wrong! Now I am stuck at the blue welcome to HP screen and it won't go any further. I can't do a run in safe mode or a system restore because it won't recognize the keyboard (even though the old one flashes on startup). I have tried rebooting several times, unplugged the entire system and tried to restart. So far nothing has worked. HELP! Any suggestions?
Perhaps it was disabled in the BIOS? Check there first WITH the PS/2 keyboard.I got help from HP support and it may have been a problem with EITHER the hard drive or a LOOSE connection on the power source. As of right now, it is working with a USB keyboard so hopefully we got it fixed. Thanks for the help though. Great site, I will be back.

If I want to purchase an Antivirus/malware protection software Can you give me some advice to the most suitable software considering it si a home pc and we use the net for IM emails ..updating windows and general browsing.
Thanks
THE SAINTThe free ones are just as good - Spybot, AdAware, cCleaner, AVG and Ewido are more than aenough for a Windows user.

(Please note that I didn't mention that I need none of these things for Linux! )GX1MAN,
can I have 2 different antivirus/malware software on the same PC?
2. Ran the spybot versio 1.4 came up with the same problem I mentioned in the 1st instance.THE_SAINT.....Please note ...that SpyBot is not a anti virus program ........It is designed to remove ......spyware . It is ok to have say .....Spybot , Ad-aware , M/S antispyware , Ewido all on the same machine at the same time....they peacfully co-exist......However , anti virus programs are a differant thing ...they don't get alone well ...... So decide on one anti-virus and use it ....having 2 installed IS NOT better..
Remember that with the spyware removers .......they all wont find it all .....thats why its a good idea to run scans with a number ..........

Hope this helps you .

I have found that the freeware anti-virus applications do not do as good a job as the commercial ones. Trend Micro is my personal favourite, and I've heard lots of people who say they love NOD32, although I've never tried it. Norton takes up too much resources and McAfee is a pain trying to configure.

Freeware anti-spyware applications, on the other hand, are fine. I have found no need to purchase any yet. Like dl65 said, you shouldn't have more than one anti-virus or firewall running at once (make sure if your using a personal firewall that you disable the one that comes with Service Pack 2)

Will report back again if this problem is noticed.

By that do you mean the problem is gone?

Without any more info we just have to guess......what kind of info you need?
Make sure first, your laptop has the power to load the system?Plug in the mains adapter? then make sure you have not dropped/banging the laptop/or had it running/obscuring the laptop fan

Does the pc have problems all time booting WINDOWS......

~List specs of it.......>ram etc.....my laptop is fine my pc thats messed up has NEVER done this befor it has 512mb of sdramTest the hard drive........

Pay the makers hard drive website for diagnostic test on it........or if under warrenty vist the laptop makers website........

For a pc/laptop Not......to do anything on normal boot-up or even safe mode..........i would say,you may have a lazy hard drive...Make sure that you don't have a lot of FILES (without folders) on the root directory C: first of all then run diagnostic checks on your hard-drive and RAM.

Backup your important data and then run - chkdsk /rMake sure that you don't have a lot of files (without folders) on the root directory C: first of all, then run diagnostic checks on your hard-drive and RAM.

Solve : Microsoft .NET Framework?

Answer»

I hav a message that reads: " An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. Click CONTINUE and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

Object REFERENCE not set to an instance of an object"

There are 2 buttons- Details or Continue
Details is just a list and continue does nothing.......
.......i CANT restart or TURN off the computer! HELP! I'm pretty sure if you pull the plug, the PC will in fact power off (unless it's a laptop, in which case you might have to remove the battery).

What program issued the message and what version of the .NET Framework are you referring to? If this is a homegrown program, you may be missing a set statement.

Let us know.

Solve : regedit /e?

Answer»

I do a LOT of spyware cleaning on the net in a forum and tend to use bat files to find things that need cleaning in the registery. What I am trying to do is get a reg key copied and exported to notepad then placed on the desktop for them to find and POST to me. A lot of people seem to have troble finding it after it has run and placed it here C:\files.txt
This program has to be ABLE to run in any operating SYSTEM. Here is what I normally use, the HKEY will differ from time to time.

@echo off
echo Hello
echo This batch file will export a copy of the registery key we need to see
echo when it is done go Start Find Files and Folders and enter files txt
echo copy that fileand past it back here for me to see.
echo on
pause
regedit /e C:\files.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-"
copy C:\files.txt
@echo off
echo Finished
echo onWhat does the /E switch do?Please do not DOUBLE post. There is a response to the same question in the DOS forum.

the /e is for exportWhat is your exact problem now None thank you, the problem was solved by Sidewinder.
