Solve : Dell Optiplex GX520 keeps shutting off and restarting, over and over again? |
Answer» Help, Just worked on one of those the other day. Very odd machine, mirrored motherboard on opposite side of case, i.e. right side comes off, instead of left side. First one I ever saw like that. Heat sink is huge, fan is mounted in separate air duct, but large & very quiet, spins slowly. If fan is not spinning, it probably won't turn on.BTW, it's a modified BTX motherboard & case.Quote from: shashgo on December 19, 2011, 10:30:37 AM patio: All of their products are good...just depends on what you want to spend...Check the capacitors on the MOBO.. If the tops are bulging or there is a brownish discharge from them then they are no good, this will cause the restart problem. Sometimes either you or someone has messed with your computer and changed where it boots from. A scenario like what you have described happens when your computer tries to boot from your a CD which is not in there. So what you need to do is 1. Turn on your computer and as soon as it starts to boot, hit F2 to enter setup. 2. While there look for boot sequence and look at where your PC boots from 3. If it is booting form CD Rom, make sure you change that to Drive C. 4. You should be able to resolve the situation using this method if that is what is wrong. I do not think it is overheating as if that is the case, it won't be starting over and over. It will just shut off to protect some of the devices from frying. Hope the above helps out. If not let me know and I will give you more detail. You have mis-diagnosed the issue...it's not a bootup problem. |

Solve : Could not srart Windows after malware removal? |
Answer» Last night I scanned my PC with Malwarebyte's and it detected some trojans. I don't want to mess up my registry and create more problems. Please do not post malware queries/logs on any FORUM other than the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum where C.Hope authorised malware removal specialists will assist you. Go here. Good luck.Dusty, I believe this is more related to Windows (registry) and not malware, that's why I posted here and not there.Okay, the fact your problem MANIFESTED itself after using MalwareBytes may be a SIMPLE coincidence. Perhaps your system is Blue Screening. Reboot and hold down F8. If asked to select a boot device opt for the hard drive. When a list of boot options is displayed select "Disable automatic restart on system failure". If a BSOD is displayed please post the relevant details including the Stop Code. Hope you have backup for your registry. In the Malwarebytes' scanned result, only 3 out of 7 are related to registry keys, which I judged as safe, and unchecked for removal. There is no blue screen. When Malwarebytes' prompted me for reboot in order for the removal process to be completed, it keep rebooting at the Windows logo stage. Yes I do have a registry backup, and Malwarebytes' created a restore point as well. I went into Safe Mode and perform a System Restore and now it's running fine again. Thanks.Excellent news. Thanks for coming back to report your success. D.Not perfect though. The System Restore messes up my graphic softwares (CorelDraw & Adobe Creative Suite). Some features are giving me errors. Can't reinstall due to some errors. Gotta spend some times manually tackling them. Cheers. Oh dear. The System Restore may have restored a 'bad' system, perhaps before you removed malware. I still recommend a trip to the Virus and Malware forum, you can always return here should you need assistance once those excellent C.Hope Authorised Malware Removal Specialists are satisfied that your system is malware free. Remember that the more you do the more complex the corrective procedures may become. Good luck. |

Solve : Can I delete old service packs?? |
Answer» I NEED to make some room in the computer, so I was looking in the "add/remove" programs listing under size and use. I noticed that I have SP 2.5, 3, 3.5 and I think 5. If you keep the most current, can you delete the others. The are pretty large in size. I never know which programs that you don't know are safe to delete or not. No. For one thing, those probably aren't service packs, they sound more like .NET framework components. However... True, but last I checked there was no Service Pack 2.5, 3.5, or 5 for WINDOWS... More to the point, chances are, they are in fact referring to .NET Framework components versions 2.0, 3.5, and 4; the latest releases of these are all a "Service Pack" to the .NET framework of the CORRESPONDING version, so to the uneducated observer might appear to be "service packs". Also, on that note, removing a Service pack in Add/remove programs will UNINSTALL that service pack, leaving you with a system from before it was installed. You can use Disk Cleanup to remove old Service pack uninstallation files. (the ones patio notes, which do take up quite a bit of disk space) |

Solve : Toshiba Satellite A40 graphics driver error?? |
Answer» Alright, so i have had this Toshiba Satellite A40 for some time now, and it worked fine for all my school work etc. However when i started playing some videos once in a blue moon, the system crashes and i get a driver error that my graphics driver dont work. I recently tried to install GTA VC on the computer and it work until the moment of me starting new game. or any game. It crashes and either gives me a blue screen of death or driver error. The graphics card is a intel (r) 852MG/852MGE/855MGE/855MG. The system is running WINDOWS XP Pro SP3 and has 784 or SOMETHING like that mb of RAM, and 40GB hard drive, and a 2.70Ghz pentium 4 CPU please help me get this running. I downloaded my driver from the Toshiba website under the drivers for this system. Any help will be APPRECIATED, thanks The causes for this issue can be different if the issue relates solely to "games". However if as you state it is also "videos" you could try another video player. I suggest you give VLC a try and see if it MAKES any difference for the videos side of things. Is the video card on-board or is it an inserted card? If you have access to another video card with associated drivers/filmware that you could install at least temporarily that could help with knowing where the problem lies.truenorthForgot to say it was a laptop And was wondering if I could change the driver version cause I need this laptop Actually i should have caught that it is a laptop--i believe all satellites are laptops. Should have caught that as i own a satellite myself. I assume this "problem" has only arisen since you started to do things with the computer that you had not done before. So i believe it is not a deterioration from a previous performance. I would try the download of the VLC player just to see if it makes a difference for the video situation. Then we can go from there depending on what happens. It is a free player and contains the greatest assortment of video codecs of players. If you do go looking for updated drivers go to the Toshiba site to try and find the appropriate ONES. By the way have you ever changed the operating system in the computer?truenorthQuote from: comda on December 24, 2011, 05:19:00 PM Forgot to say it was a laptop And was wondering if I could change the driver version cause I need this laptop Have you checked the Toshiba website to see if they have a newer version of your video driver? http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jspDownload also Bluescreenview for additional info. on the error codes.alright. its just that, it wasnt long that i reinstalled windows and everything, so im guessing maybe i already have the newest one, how do i check the driver version? device manager? ill see the driver version and maybe download a newer version or older, and that might do the trick........Quote from: comda on December 25, 2011, 09:42:34 AM how do i check the driver version? device manager? Yes. Right click the video adapter and select properties. Then click the driver tab. |

Solve : STOP 0x0000007B message in Windows XP install? |
Answer» I'll start with a bit of background, so please bear with me... Cause of STOP 0x0000007B Errors It certainly looks like there is something wrong with your DVD drive/CD Drive/Motherboard IDE Controller. Thanks for taking the time to have a look. I've already looked at the site that you gave me a link to and reading through it, it looks like he's saying that it is probably a Driver issue (the second parameter of the STOP message being 0xC0000034), but like I say, documentation says I shouldn't need a third party driver. Is there anything else I can try regarding Drivers? If it is hardware, I don't think it's the CD/DVD Drives because they work fine outside of Windows (i.e when the PC's booting up). Likewise the Hard Drive is read and written to OK by GPARTED, so I think that's OK. So does that just leave the IDE Controller onthe Motherboard. Any suggestion how I could test that out without replacing the Motherboard first?Make sure your CD and DVD drives are jumpered properly-one should be Master and the other should be Slave. You can test with an addon PCI/PCI-E IDE controller card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=PCI+IDE+card&x=0&y=0Many thanks again - I appreciate your time. As far as CD/DVD goes, they were working fine for a few years and I've not had them out to change the jumpers, so it can't be that. However, before I buy a PCI card, would you be able to explain how GPARTED is able to access the Hard Drive - I know it's Linux based rather than Windows but I guess it's still got to use the Motherboard's Controller. I just can't get my head round the fact that everything seems to be OK before Windows tries to start. I think I've detailed all the relevant events but I hope I'm not missing something important that I should have told you.Quote from: budsdad on December 15, 2011, 02:35:01 AM However, before I buy a PCI card, would you be able to explain how GPARTED is able to access the Hard Drive - I know it's Linux based rather than Windows but I guess it's still got to use the Motherboard's Controller. No you are not missing anything you need to tell us. The answer is simple. Your hard drive uses a SATA connector and therefore SATA motherboard controller, which is separate from the IDE controller, which we presume is malfunctioning.OK - I think I was mis-understanding - I had it in my head that it was the Hard Drive and the problem with the CDs was a symptom BUT I guess it makes more sense for it to be the IDE Controller that's the problem. However, I suppose the same QUESTION still applies - how come I can get so far reading from the CD - Gparted happily runs from the DVD Drive as does the Windows Set Up CD, which loads up all the required files and doesn't STOP until it tries to Start Windows. I presume that both of these things need to use the IDE Controller on the Motherboard to make the DVD Drive work. Sorry if I'm being a bit dense but I'd really like to understand the problem rather than just resolve it (although that would be nice). Before going to the expense of buying a new PCI IDE Card - I tried loading an old copy of Windows 98, which worked - up to a point. I didn't have all the required drivers BUT then I tried removing the Firewire Card and Hey Presto Windows XP installed without a problem. So I'm guessing that there is a problem with the Firewire Card. Now waiting for a replacement Firewire Card but in the meantime everything else seems to be working OK. Many thanks to Transfusion for taking the time to try and help me.No problem In the meantime, try resetting your BIOS settings to default: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdp_L5IxaNI |

Solve : BSOD with 0x0000007B? |
Answer» I am having a BSOD when after a reboot from uninstalling 'Returnil' from my computer. I am not able to start up windows after passing all the beep post. In return the BSOD error: STOP: 0x0000007B, ( 0xF8911528, 0xC000000E, 0x00000000 ). I tried to run in 'safe mode' but failed also. I could see all the files when I run with a LiveCD. I am trying to go to windows system restore to an earlier point but I find no way to it. Please let me know a way to solve this problem. My OS.XP Pro. SP2. Thanks. 0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICEStop 0x000000ED (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) Stop 0x0000007B (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) These two errors have similar causes and the same troubleshooting steps apply to both of them. These stop codes always occur during the startup process. When you encounter one of these stop codes, the following has happened: 1 The system has completed the Power-On Self-Test (POST). 2 The system has loaded NTLDR and transferred control of the startup process to NTOSKRNL (the kernel). 3 NTOSKRNL is confused. Either it cannot find the rest of itself, or it cannot read the file system at the location it believes it is stored. When troubleshooting this error, your task is to find out why the Windows kernel is confused and fix the cause of the confusion. THINGS to CHECK: The SATA controller configuration in the system BIOS If the SATA controller gets toggled from ATA to AHCI mode (or vice versa), then Windows will not be able to talk to the SATA controller because the different modes require different drivers. Try toggling the SATA controller mode in the BIOS. RAID settings You may receive this error if you've been experimenting with the RAID controller settings. Try changing the RAID settings back to Autodetect (usually accurate). Improperly or poorly seated cabling Try reseating the data cables that connect the drive and its controller at both ends. Hard drive failure Run the built-in diagnostics on the hard drive. Remember: Code 7 signifies correctable data corruption, not disk failure. File system corruption Launch the recovery console from the Windows installation disc and run chkdsk /f /r. Improperly configured BOOT.INI (Windows XP). If you have inadvertently erased or tinkered with the boot.ini file, you may receive stop code 0x7B during the startup process. I have mentioned that after the uninstallation of the said application and after a reboot it happen. The thing as it is now I could not run 'safe mode', it load the drivers and after a while the same BSOD appeared again. The only thing is that I could see all the files in this hdd but could not find the system restore ( I doubt whether it help as I have not set a restore point before uninstalling the application.). Thanks again and I hope to hear from you all.about the Bootcfg command and its uses pls check site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291980If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down) 1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD. 2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool. You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console: 3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″). Select the installation number, and hit Enter. If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck). You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready: 4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem.. NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces". These commands are as follows: CD.. ATTRIB -H C:\boot.ini ATTRIB -S C:\boot.ini ATTRIB -R C:\boot.ini del boot.ini BOOTCFG /Rebuild Note about the above command. BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors. It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things: A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing. B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option. For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed. If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful). Here is your computer screen: 5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit: CHKDSK /R 6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision: FIXBOOT 7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing EXIT and pressing Enter. With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed. If you don't have Windows CD... Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD. Boot to the CD...let it finish loading. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.I am happy to hear from you all and with all the help given here my sincere thanks to all. I for a start will try the recovery console to repair it with the XP CD. I am afraid it will ask for the password as it is I do not enter any password when installing XP. Can I overcome this password problem if it ask for it. Anyway I will try and see if it works if not I try others which are given here.If prompted for a password simply hit Enter... If the system had no password it will continue.I have done all of this but still get blue screen and unable to boot in safe mode. 0x00000007b(0xf78a2524,0xcoooo34, etc, etc)yami You need to start your own topic, describing your issues. Solve : Cannot Complete Download Due To 'IO device error'? |
Answer» My sister just had a fresh install of Windows XP on her desktop computer, when she TRIES to download something from uTorrent, she gets this error- cannot complete download due to IO device error' ....I did a google search on this IO device error, and it seems others have this problem when trying to download to an external hard drive...Don't download to external hard drive, download to internal hard drive & then attempt to copy it to the external. If copy gives the same error, test the external dirve with the drive manufacturer's software; also, a reformat of the external drive MAY solve this issue. One of my external hard drives give the Device I/O error every once in a while; it always tests OK, but after a reformat, it has no issues. |

Solve : .NET Framework will not install!? |
Answer» Here's some of the problems I'm having after System Recovery. ( yup, another thread about a System Recovery gone bad. ) How do I check my .NET version? They're listed in Add\Remove.Quote from: JonathanOS on November 11, 2010, 06:17:51 PM Here's some of the problems I'm having after System Recovery. ( yup, another thread about a System Recovery gone bad. ) Several things: -The latest version of .NET Framework is 4.0; however, this is largely irrelevant because: -the versions are not cumulative. What this means is that if want to use a program developed for Version 1.1 of the framework, you need to have version 1.1 of the framework installed; that is, you can have 3.5 installed, but you won't be able to run the program designed for version 1.1. The versions are essentially separate products. The common thread of discussion on this seems to be that you should only install a version of the .NET framework when you get a program that requires that version; This is sensible, but the problem is that it's not always clear when you don't have the right version. In any case, the error message is telling you, basically, that ATI CCC requires .NET 3.5; the (DOWNLOAD also contains updates to 2.0, which may be causing the confusion). Now, the main problem here is that for some reason .NET 3.5 isn't installing. If the installer for ATI Catalyst Control Center is trying to install the framework and failing, you might have better luck installing it yourself and then trying to install Catalyst Control Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&displaylang=en That might help get it running. Quote Ultimately, I'm trying to fix blurryness. The text on the screen is blurry only in certain areas of the screen. I'll explain it as best I can... Picture yourself reading text from left to right, divide the screen into 1 inch wide vertical columns, every few inches the text is blurry, then clear, then blurry, then clear, etc. This sounds more like a monitor issue; see if another monitor looks any better to check. If it's an lcd, the clock or focus might be off. Try using any "auto" feature available on it and see if that helps (also, with an LCD, use 60hz). If it's a CRT, sounds like it might be just starting to show signs of monitor aging. Sometimes monitors will start looking blurry in their higher resolutions. See if it looks any better (less blurry) at lower resolutions. Either way, from the way I understand how they work, I don't think a video card could cause blurryness in the monitor. |

Solve : Trouble Reinstalling XP Pro on Dell Latitude D600 Laptop? |

Solve : print record of minimized Word documents?? |
Answer» Quote from: Sidewinder on NOVEMBER 08, 2010, 05:32:32 AM The MRU is stored in the registry. Unfortunately it is stored as a sequence of null-terminated strings which I could not figure out how to represent in a batch file. This little snippet of VBScript code may help: Uhmm this looks complex for me. Is there any simpler explanation? Thanks. Wow! This is your lucky day. Today, and today only, explanations are just 5¢ and simpler explanations are just 7¢. As usual the script is free. Quote Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001 Assigns the registry key to various variables. The registry key is specific to Word 2003 and will be different for other versions. Also designates the local computer to do the processing. Quote Set oReg=GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & _ This is the heart of the script. Connects to the WMI class which contains the properties and methods needed to access the Windows registry. The MRU is a sequence of null-terminated strings, which the GetMultiStringValue returns as an array. Arrays are easy to process in VBScript, a registry sequence of null-terminated strings not so much. Quote If arrValues(0) = "" Then If the MRU is empty, this error trap will allow for a gentle landing instead of the script CRASHING into the side of a mountain. Well maybe not so dramatic, but if you have an empty MRU you'll see the results from this code. Quote If Right(LCase(WScript.FullName), 11) = "cscript.exe" Then This code formats the output returned in the array of MRU items. It queries which interpreter is being used (VBScript has two) and takes advantage of how the echo instruction works in each. And there you have it. Please pay the cashier on your way out. Good luck. |

Solve : External Hard Drive Issues!? |
Answer» Hello, I've been struggling with this on and off for a while now... but basically I have an External Hard Drive (Mad Dog Multimedia) which was previously reformatted to work for a mac which has since died. I now need the External Hard Drive to work on my WINDOWS XP based laptop (which doesn't have ENOUGH free space to clean up space), but can't even get it to show up in 'my computer' and cannot figure out how to reformat it again. I've managed to locate it under 'Computer Management', but can't seem to assign it a Drive Letter or Path. PLEASE Help! Do you want to save any of the stuff on the drive or just wipe it out and start fresh?Windows will not recognise any storage device without a compatible file system and thus will not assign it a drive letter. If you are ABLE to view the hard drive in computer management then you should have the option of right clicking it and choosing format. Then you can assign a drive letter. |

Solve : Upgraded my Antivirus but computer is now shutting down on it's own? |

Answer» I have Norton Antivirus on my computer and i have not had any problems with it up until about a week ago. I had the 2010 VERSION but it let me upgrade it to the 2011 version for free and that is when i started to have problems. When i am on sites like Facebook or Youtube the computer will start getting really loud and then it will shut itself down completely. It does it a lot when i am trying to play games or watch a video. Is my Norton the problem or is my computer infected? It might be a problem with your hardware. The noise is a really loud humming sound and then it will shut offDo the sound come out from the speaker/s or inside the CPU? Any distinct sound coming from PSU exhaust fan? Cleaning it would be the first step. Download Speedfan hardware MONITOR to check temperature reading. Solve : accidental click removes startup menu? |
Answer» This is a long STORY but here goes. We installed a new hard drive in a Dell 2400. We finally have it up and running but I wanted to change the huge screen to normal. I went into Control Panel, Display, Settings, and monitor. I must have clicked on something really bad because when I restarted my computer I had no startup screen. The tower turns on and is running perfectly. The monitor shows the Dell logo, and then goes from black to a deep midnight BLUE. I have tried the monitor driver disk and the F8 key on startup but to no avail. PLEASE help me get out of this screen since I have nothing to click on.You must have change the REFRESH rate settings and uncheck the box below it. The monitor must have not support the changes and upon windows booting it cannot configure the correct settings and it hangs on black STATE. You must make it to safemode option to work around this. Make sure you tap the F8 option key either rapidly if not then try tapping it just once on first splash screen, either way. |

Solve : Windows Media Player does not use the letter "A" in numerical order when listin? |

Answer» I have just noticed that WMP11 does not RECOGNIZE the letter A as the first song in numerical order. If the song starts with an A, it will place it in order using the second word of the song. The song name stays in order in a regular file. The tag file is correct. Anybody ever notice this and if so, have you found the cure. I guess I am obsessive about having things in order. Thanks. |

Answer» Hi There. ...When i try to install it it loads files and get to the load windows when i get blue screen and error messhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082Firstly let me thank you both for your replys but now i am more confused. The link to Microsoft well that just lost me. we do not have backup COMPUTER at all! What we have is a new but French LAPTOP with win 7 installed and a new xp pro cd. I gather from what i have READ that there may be missing drivers in the mother board is this correct and if so how can this be corrected. Thanks Kevin. You'll have to get them from Packard Bell. Maybe you can get the original CD from them if you supply them your serial number. Packard Bell is no longer sold in North America. http://www.packardbell.com/index.htmlI've never seen one blue screen before installation started before. How are you going about installing? How far do you get? You should check packard bell's website to make sure that they have XP drivers for that computer before installing. If they don't have drivers for XP then you'll probably be stuck with win7.All sorted now. |

Solve : Boot problems with Acer Aspire one Laptop? |
Answer» My daughter didn't plug her laptop in and the battery died. When she PLUGGED it in and tried to start it, she GOT the start up screen asking which mode to start... Safe mode, safe Mode with network, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last known Good Config and Start Windows Normally. My daughter didn't plug her laptop in and the battery died....Almost sounds like she picked up a virus...??This is all because Windows was not shutdown properly which can sometimes corrupt the startup files. Usually, it's not a problem, but not always, which you have found out. I would boot to the Recovery Console and perform chdsk /r. If that doesn't work perform a repair install. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. You will need to use one of the Acer CD's provided or boot to the Acer Diagnostics partition via the System SETUP (i.e. BIOS, CMOS). |

Solve : NTFS vs FAT32 - Disaster Immunity etc.? |
Answer» I understand that NTFS is supposed to be more reliable than FAT32. I understand that NTFS is supposed to be more reliable than FAT32.More the former then the LATTER. Security settings have nothing to do with a file-system's reliability. In fact in many ways it can detract from it. Quote When the mains failed my laptop continued to run on battery and I achieved a controlled shutdown,FTDisk warnings, not errors. An Error would result in a blue screen and the NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM or FAT32_FILE_SYSTEM (obviously depending on the filesystem in question) STOP code. Generally speaking- there is absolutely no reason to go spelunking in the Event Viewer, and even less reason to create conclusions based on it's contents. All of my Windows machines' Event Viewers are riddled with what EventVwr describes as "Errors" but I've yet to have any real problems. The only Problems that most people have with regards to event viewer is when they try to take a "corrective action" against something in it. Then they cause problems. The EventViewer is intended to supplement additional data after a problem has already been identified; It answers "why" questions when you already know the "what". Trying to look through the eventvwr just to see if there is a "what" will cause you to see "What's" everywhere; for example, just because there is a event viewer entry labelled as Critical or "error" doesn't mean it NEEDS your attention. If that was the case, you would have been told by a dialog box or balloon. Basically: Any Event Log entry that doesn't have a corresponding visible element (such as a blue screen or dialog box, or balloon) is largely irrelevant and not worth worrying about. With FTDISK errors of the form "Delayed write failed..." usually it just means that you will lose a bit of data. NTFS is fault tolerant in that in keeps a transaction log; in the case of FTDISK errors that say "failed to flush the transaction log... Corruption may occur" or something to that effect, the extent of said corruption would me the loss of some recent writes. a Chkdsk will fix these errors and bring the filesystem back to perfect health, assuming any problems result from this at all. Quote I have also seen FTDisk errors when Acronis v 11 dismounts an image file,See above paragraph for why reading meanings into Event viewer entries is a bad idea. Quote Would those FTDisk Errors have happened for both FAT32 and NTFS partitions on the external drive ?I think so. They might have different labels and/or descriptions (FAT32 doesn't have a transaction log) but the jist will be the same. Quote Does such an FTDisk Error have more serious consequences to FAT32 than NTFS files.Neither have any consequences whatsoever. That's why they are in the event log. They aren't issues, but they are logged because they are noteworthy. One way to think of it is as the computer's diary; it writes about interesting things that happened, "I couldn't write to the disk again, I think she's playing hard to get" type stuff. My non-admin daughter can no longer use a BAT script that updates an INI file in this partition. I plan to use CACLS to allow all users FULL control of the folder that holds the INI files. I would appreciate advice upon the Inherit options CI, OI, and IO. Quote BIG QUESTION :-No. the "disaster immunity" of NTFS and FAT32 are the same, which is to say, virtually nil. "disaster immunity" only comes in one form. Backups. relying on the file systems error recovery or the duplication in a RAID array is foolish and asking for trouble. Quote I had 6 off NTFS plus 3 off FAT32 partitions on my 160 GB laptop HDD.Was this the built-in Partitioning tool? If Not, No idea what you are talking about (as in, never used the program). Sounds like a badly designed program in that case. In the former, it was probably a mis-click... I had a similar "problem" whereby I lost three years of work on an internal drive while attempting to fix another unrelated external. Quote More recently I have run chkdsk on the largest partition, 47 GB of FAT32, and it found 100 KB of lost clustersNTFS has transaction logging and USN journalling. This pretty much obsoletes lost chains/clusters. A lost cluster is a location on the disk that is allocated, but never actually referenced. (by a file). a file is stored in units called clusters; FAT32 has clusters of different sizes depending on the size of the disk. NTFS is almost always 4K. Either way, a cluster is the smallest unit of data you can store on a disk. If you store a 1 byte file, it takes up at the very least a single. On your average NTFS drive, a 1 byte file occupies 4KB on disk. You can see this in action. Create a file; and then view the properties. the "Size on disk" item will be a multiple of the size of the clusters on the disk the file is stored on. (well, unless you compress or encrypt the file). With Fat32, these were tracked essentially as a chain; one cluster would point to another cluster which would point to another until nothing is pointed at (at which point, it's the end of the file). a Lost chain is when a disk error or write error causes, either the "next cluster" pointer to become null on a cluster (thus making it the end of the file) or when errant writes create allocated clusters that aren't associated with files. Chkdsk determines if a cluster is associated with a file by following every file and seeing if any file uses it; to do this, it looks up the file in the directory (which holds a pointer to the first cluster of data of said file, and then follows that chain until the chain ends. If there are clusters that are never passed using this METHOD, they are lost clusters. If clusters are passed over twice, then you have "cross-linked" clusters, which is similar to lost chains, except instead of having no file referencing the data, there are two (or sometimes more) files referencing it. Generally, only a single one is correct; editing any one of the other files can and usually will change the contents of the other files (since they effectively "share" their contents. Anyway, I'm not sure how NTFS does it; it's still possible to get lost chains/clusters, but it's more robust against them. It doesn't matter much anyway. Quote If I give all users full control over H:\ will that increase its vulnerability to lost clusters ?No.Many thanks. I will now give FULL access to all users on H:\. Partition Wizard is a Canadian third party Partition manager. It costs $699 for the "technician license" which suggests it is intended for discerning users. I use the free license which does the same as the $699 product excepting the omission of :- Merge Partition; Convert dynamic disk to basic without data loss; change cluster size without data loss. This free version has always worked perfectly on very many other occasions. I think its perfect history made me over confident, and although I closed down applications on the task bar, I left the Internet connected and Comodo Internet Security was "armed to the teeth". I will not make that mistake again. If I ever have another problem I may simply use the Boot CD to ensure no "external disturbance". I have previously used several versions of Easeus Partition Managers. My experience of Partition Managers is that they generally suggest closing down other applications before they do any "heavy lifting". Again, many thanks for explanations. Regards Alan |

Solve : Memory cards crash computers? |
Answer» So I've got two COMPUTERS, a laptop and a desktop, both running XP about 4 or 5 years old. I have two 2GB SD cards and one 8GB SDHC card that I use with a Kodak ZI6 video camera. I make a lot of videos in my free time and it's something I like to do a lot. I've had the camera for a few months and it worked great. I bought my first SDHC card and when I used it in either computer it completely crashed the thing and after some research learned my motherboard was too old to support it, which is understandable. The other two SD memory cards I had worked fine for a while. In September after I came back from a TRIP with hours and hours of video. I found that when I plugged my memory cards in several different ways no matter what my computer froze and I had to kill it: using the SD card SLOT on the computer or leaving the card in the camera and utilizing the USB hookup on the camera. I used a temporary solution by borrowing a newer computer and putting the files on there, then transferring them to my computer using an external hard drive as the middle man. I haven't got a chance to try a different memory card besides my three on the computers, but it does work on my friend's newer one running Vista purchased within the last year. Any help would be really appreciated because this is killing me. I found that when I plugged my memory cards in several different ways no matter what my computer froze and I had to kill it: using the SD card slot on the computer or leaving the card in the camera and utilizing the USB hookup on the camera. You need to classify this. My personal recommendation is to not use 8GB cards. Use only certified 2GB cards from a major maker. Your computer is not reliable. It seems that many people not not understand the bigger is not always better. The 2 GB cards have a better track record for compatibility.Memory card may be corrupt. SD especially SDHC are prone to crashes 1. Have you tried using a memory card reader? 2. Where the any 'memory card error/s' upon loading SD/SDHC into camera before switching to computer then crashes? Different Digital Camera models(old, new) and now different digital memory card models can cause memory errors, data loss, firmware bugs. 3. Reformatting your card(after file back-up)may solve the issue...Every once in a while SD card manufactures change the specifications on the cards without relabeling them. So old card readers cannot read new cards, but I have never seen the card crash the computer. If the card reader can't read the card it won't. Are you using an external card reader or a card reader build into your computer? Because your computer has been crashing you can bet that several files have been corrupted. You should run check disk and run sfc /scannow into a cmd prompt. Also update the drivers for the card reader. Okay so I was aware that the 8gb one wouldn't work because of the oldness of my computers, but I've been using the 2gb ones for a few months with no problem. I'll try and reformat the cards but that'll be tricky because they freeze my computer. I'll probably try doing it in a new one. get back to yaIt is possible to have more memory than the system can handleFormat them on a WORKING newer machine...you can also partition the 8G into 4 equal 2G partitions...FAT32 I use a 16GB SDHC card with a USB card reader in an old Pentium II laptop with USB1.1 & WinXP and have no issues. Therefore, it's not the age of the motherboard, the size of the memory card, etc. What card reader are you using?I either use the built in card reader or USB plugin on my camera with the memory card inside of it on the desktop, or just USB on the laptop. I've yet to try and reformat them but it seems to me like that might be the solution. I'll also try partitioning the one.Your memory card may have hand a virus.Quote from: frobro on November 02, 2010, 08:45:33 PM I either use the built in card reader or USB plugin on my camera with the memory card inside of it on the desktop, or just USB on the laptop. I've yet to try and reformat them but it seems to me like that might be the solution. I'll also try partitioning the one.I assume they are already formatted FAT32; I wouldn't recommend partitioning them. Did you originally format them with the computer or the camera? Reformat them with the camera which will create the camera's necessary directory structure. |
