Solve : No sound when using internet - volume icon gone from task bar ??

Answer»

Hello,
I am using XP - for no apparent reason the volume icon has disappeared from the task bar and I do not get sound when using internet - such as BBC iPlayer. I do get sound from my music library and when using Skype calls.
Thanks for helping.
Try this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095Thanks - will try it.
Don't forget to let us KNOW how it goes, even if it works!*censored* Red - I tried the support link but did not help. I checked driver and it said the driver is ok. I tried YOUTUBE ref the sound but no sound.
I got sound from the support video help.
It seems it is only a problem when use the web connections i/e no youtube sound and no BBC iplayer sound. all other sound links work - skype, playing a Cd etc.

This is a real mystery - do you have other suggestions.
thanks for helpingTake a look at this. Might have to dig a bit to uncover the answer. Can't say I understand it all.

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/24329-volume-icon-not-appearing-system-tray.htmlTried all the help so far given - thanks. I am at a loss - i have however downloaded a new driver from "Driver BOOST" but DONT know how to install it, it is in my download file but there is no install instructions, any help on this please. thanks
PS > what is the "censored" for Reddevil ??
Installing drivers from a third party site is never recommended. Have you checked your current sound setup in the device manager.

P.S What is censored ??I put hello Red at the beginning of my reply - the hello was replaced with the WORD "censored" ??

Solve : Dell Optiplex GX520 keeps shutting off and restarting, over and over again?

Answer»

Help,

Ive got a dell optiplex gx520 that suddenly just shut down when I clicked on a shortcut on my desktop, and now it just powers off, the on, gets to the dell logo screen, then powers off and back on. It repeats this again and again, and I dont know know why? I cant even get to safe mode to try to restore the computer to before when the problem started. How do I fix this?
Most likely over-heating...
When's the last time you opened it and did some housekeeping ?
Try disabling automatic restart in Advance Boot Menu.patio,

I had replaced the thermal GREASE about 4 days ago. But this problem started just now. Do you think it still has to do with not enough grease between the CPU/heatsink? Is Arctic 5 ceramique a good thermal compound?

shekarsh:

From one shashank to another, yup thats my name too. How do I get to the advanced menu if the computer never boots up. Do you mean the BIOS menu by pressing F2?
Just worked on one of those the other day. Very odd machine, mirrored motherboard on opposite side of case, i.e. right side comes off, instead of left side. First one I ever saw like that. Heat sink is huge, fan is mounted in separate air duct, but large & very quiet, spins slowly. If fan is not spinning, it probably won't turn on.The fans work, and everything seems to be okay. So I guess the only thing that can be singled out is overheating caused by insufficient thermal paste. I think that is the reason because even though I put enough paste on there, it seems that the paste is kinda dried out and is not a very free flowing paste but is kind of like dried toothpaste. Its not taotally dry but it doesnt dlow as smoothly as when I first bought it
Ill see if I can get some new paste
Too much can be just as bad as not enough...

All of their products are good...just depends on what you want to spend...Check the capacitors on the MOBO..

If the tops are bulging or there is a brownish discharge from them then they are no good, this will cause the restart problem.
Sometimes either you or someone has messed with your computer and changed where it boots from. A scenario like what you have described happens when your computer tries to boot from your a CD which is not in there. So what you need to do is

1. Turn on your computer and as soon as it starts to boot, hit F2 to enter setup.

2. While there look for boot sequence and look at where your PC boots from

3. If it is booting form CD Rom, make sure you change that to Drive C.

4. You should be able to resolve the situation using this method if that is what is wrong.

I do not think it is overheating as if that is the case, it won't be starting over and over. It will just shut off to protect some of the devices from frying. Hope the above helps out. If not let me know and I will give you more detail. You have mis-diagnosed the issue...it's not a bootup problem.

Solve : XP Hangs on Splash Screen?

Answer»

Hello,

I am TRYING to help my friend fix their computer. It's a Dell Latitude D620 with Windows XP Professional.

The first time I started it, everything loaded and the DESKTOP displayed...then the computer froze.

I shut it down and tried to start it in SAFE mode. The computer got hung
up at windows\system32\config\system. So, I held the power button down
and restarted the computer.

I tried to start the computer again normally. After a few seconds the
splash screen froze. After a few minutes, I hit F8. The Advanced Options
Menu came up. I selected to load the last known good configuration. The
computer restarted again and the Advanced Options Menu displayed again.
This time I chose Start Windows Normally.

Once again, it is frozen on the splash screen.

I thought I'd better ask for help before I dig myself into a deeper hole. I would also like to know if it's okay to hold the power button down to shut the computer off until I figure out what to do or will that just make things worse? Thanks! If you still have your WinXP SETUP disc, you could try to do an Automated Startup Recovery.

Solve : Could not srart Windows after malware removal?

Answer»

Last night I scanned my PC with Malwarebyte's and it detected some trojans.
After I select the removal option and restart my PC, it keep restarting AF the Windows logo page.

I don't quite understand what will this fix do.
Do you mind to explain?

I don't want to mess up my registry and create more problems.
I do trust you but I'm interested to know what's the solution means.

I don't want to mess up my registry and create more problems.

Please do not post malware queries/logs on any FORUM other than the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum where C.Hope authorised malware removal specialists will assist you. Go here.

Good luck.Dusty, I believe this is more related to Windows (registry) and not malware, that's why I posted here and not there.Okay, the fact your problem MANIFESTED itself after using MalwareBytes may be a SIMPLE coincidence.

Perhaps your system is Blue Screening. Reboot and hold down F8. If asked to select a boot device opt for the hard drive. When a list of boot options is displayed select "Disable automatic restart on system failure".

If a BSOD is displayed please post the relevant details including the Stop Code.

Hope you have backup for your registry.

In the Malwarebytes' scanned result, only 3 out of 7 are related to registry keys, which I judged as safe, and unchecked for removal.

There is no blue screen. When Malwarebytes' prompted me for reboot in order for the removal process to be completed, it keep rebooting at the Windows logo stage.

Yes I do have a registry backup, and Malwarebytes' created a restore point as well.

I went into Safe Mode and perform a System Restore and now it's running fine again.

Thanks.Excellent news. Thanks for coming back to report your success.

D.Not perfect though.

The System Restore messes up my graphic softwares (CorelDraw & Adobe Creative Suite).
Some features are giving me errors. Can't reinstall due to some errors.
Gotta spend some times manually tackling them.

Cheers.
Oh dear. The System Restore may have restored a 'bad' system, perhaps before you removed malware. I still recommend a trip to the Virus and Malware forum, you can always return here should you need assistance once those excellent C.Hope Authorised Malware Removal Specialists are satisfied that your system is malware free.

Remember that the more you do the more complex the corrective procedures may become.

Good luck.

Solve : Can I delete old service packs??

Answer»

I NEED to make some room in the computer, so I was looking in the "add/remove" programs listing under size and use. I noticed that I have SP 2.5, 3, 3.5 and I think 5. If you keep the most current, can you delete the others. The are pretty large in size. I never know which programs that you don't know are safe to delete or not. No. For one thing, those probably aren't service packs, they sound more like .NET framework components.

Sure, you could remove them, but then you'd just have to reinstall them when you figure out which programs you have needed them installed in the first place.However...
You can delete the $NTuninstaller$ files for those service packs...which won't affect the SP's at all...

They are usually in blue and do take up ALOT of space.Quote from: patio on December 25, 2011, 05:51:53 PM

However...

True, but last I checked there was no Service Pack 2.5, 3.5, or 5 for WINDOWS... More to the point, chances are, they are in fact referring to .NET Framework components versions 2.0, 3.5, and 4; the latest releases of these are all a "Service Pack" to the .NET framework of the CORRESPONDING version, so to the uneducated observer might appear to be "service packs".

Also, on that note, removing a Service pack in Add/remove programs will UNINSTALL that service pack, leaving you with a system from before it was installed. You can use Disk Cleanup to remove old Service pack uninstallation files. (the ones patio notes, which do take up quite a bit of disk space)

Solve : Toshiba Satellite A40 graphics driver error??

Answer»

Alright, so i have had this Toshiba Satellite A40 for some time now, and it worked fine for all my school work etc. However when i started playing some videos once in a blue moon, the system crashes and i get a driver error that my graphics driver dont work. I recently tried to install GTA VC on the computer and it work until the moment of me starting new game. or any game. It crashes and either gives me a blue screen of death or driver error. The graphics card is a intel (r) 852MG/852MGE/855MGE/855MG. The system is running WINDOWS XP Pro SP3 and has 784 or SOMETHING like that mb of RAM, and 40GB hard drive, and a 2.70Ghz pentium 4 CPU please help me get this running. I downloaded my driver from the Toshiba website under the drivers for this system. Any help will be APPRECIATED, thanks The causes for this issue can be different if the issue relates solely to "games". However if as you state it is also "videos" you could try another video player. I suggest you give VLC a try and see if it MAKES any difference for the videos side of things. Is the video card on-board or is it an inserted card? If you have access to another video card with associated drivers/filmware that you could install at least temporarily that could help with knowing where the problem lies.truenorthForgot to say it was a laptop And was wondering if I could change the driver version cause I need this laptop Actually i should have caught that it is a laptop--i believe all satellites are laptops. Should have caught that as i own a satellite myself. I assume this "problem" has only arisen since you started to do things with the computer that you had not done before. So i believe it is not a deterioration from a previous performance. I would try the download of the VLC player just to see if it makes a difference for the video situation. Then we can go from there depending on what happens. It is a free player and contains the greatest assortment of video codecs of players. If you do go looking for updated drivers go to the Toshiba site to try and find the appropriate ONES. By the way have you ever changed the operating system in the computer?truenorthQuote from: comda on December 24, 2011, 05:19:00 PM

Check your IDE cable. Make sure it's making a good connection to the drive and the motherboard. Unplug it, then replug it. It may have came loose while you were working inside.

Solve : STOP 0x0000007B message in Windows XP install?

Answer»

I'll start with a bit of background, so please bear with me...

Some while ago I realised my IEEE 1394 (Firewire) port was no longer working. In Device Manager it reported Error 12 - but I couldn't find any conflicts. I did notice that there also appeared to be a lot of problems under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" - there were 44 instances of "Primary IDE Channel" and 44 instances of "Secondary IDE Channel" all reporting "Error Code 12". In addition there were 140 instances of "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller", 96 of which were reporting "Error Code 12". About this time I noticed that my CD Drive and separate DVD Drive were no longer showing up in Windows.

I decided to re-install my Windows XP from the CD (it's a proper OEM Microsoft Disk provided by the shop that built the PC). The CD/DVD Drives worked fine to Boot from the CD and loaded various files but then I GOT the STOP message - 0x0000007B (0xF7802524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

Meanwhile apart from the THINGS mentioned above Windows appeared to be working OK - so I lived with it for a while.

However, I need to use the Firewire for my Video Camera and it's a bit awkward not having a CD Drive, so I decided to try again.

My Motherboard is supported by XP and the documentation that came with it specifically says that I do NOT need to install additional drivers (F6 at Set Up) unless I'm using RAID (which I'm not and this is definately set correctly in the BIOS - i.e SATA MODE = Non-RAID). The other main suggestion seems to be a Virus in the Boot record, so I decided to re-format the Hard Drive. Bearing in mind that I couldn't do this with the XP CD as it never gets that far, I got a copy of GPARTED and deleted the partitions and then formatted it as NTFS - same STOP message when I tried to install XP.

So is it a hardware problem? If so, how can I identify what? Any suggestions anyone may have would be appreciated.

Board = ALiveNF6G-VSTA
Processor = 2.35 gig AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
Hard Drive = Maxtor 6V200EO (200GB)
Windows XP CD = OEM Home Edition VERSION 2002 Service Pack 2
An error with an OS Install usually POINTS to a hardware problem...

Cause of STOP 0x0000007B Errors

STOP 0x0000007B errors are caused by device driver issues (especially those related to hard drive and other storage controllers), viruses, data corruption, and sometimes even hardware failures.

It certainly looks like there is something wrong with your DVD drive/CD Drive/Motherboard IDE Controller. Thanks for taking the time to have a look. I've already looked at the site that you gave me a link to and reading through it, it looks like he's saying that it is probably a Driver issue (the second parameter of the STOP message being 0xC0000034), but like I say, documentation says I shouldn't need a third party driver. Is there anything else I can try regarding Drivers?

If it is hardware, I don't think it's the CD/DVD Drives because they work fine outside of Windows (i.e when the PC's booting up). Likewise the Hard Drive is read and written to OK by GPARTED, so I think that's OK. So does that just leave the IDE Controller onthe Motherboard. Any suggestion how I could test that out without replacing the Motherboard first?Make sure your CD and DVD drives are jumpered properly-one should be Master and the other should be Slave.

You can test with an addon PCI/PCI-E IDE controller card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=PCI+IDE+card&x=0&y=0Many thanks again - I appreciate your time.

As far as CD/DVD goes, they were working fine for a few years and I've not had them out to change the jumpers, so it can't be that.

However, before I buy a PCI card, would you be able to explain how GPARTED is able to access the Hard Drive - I know it's Linux based rather than Windows but I guess it's still got to use the Motherboard's Controller.

I just can't get my head round the fact that everything seems to be OK before Windows tries to start.

I think I've detailed all the relevant events but I hope I'm not missing something important that I should have told you.Quote from: budsdad on December 15, 2011, 02:35:01 AM

No you are not missing anything you need to tell us.
The answer is simple. Your hard drive uses a SATA connector and therefore SATA motherboard controller, which is separate from the IDE controller, which we presume is malfunctioning.OK - I think I was mis-understanding - I had it in my head that it was the Hard Drive and the problem with the CDs was a symptom BUT I guess it makes more sense for it to be the IDE Controller that's the problem.

However, I suppose the same QUESTION still applies - how come I can get so far reading from the CD - Gparted happily runs from the DVD Drive as does the Windows Set Up CD, which loads up all the required files and doesn't STOP until it tries to Start Windows. I presume that both of these things need to use the IDE Controller on the Motherboard to make the DVD Drive work.

Sorry if I'm being a bit dense but I'd really like to understand the problem rather than just resolve it (although that would be nice). Before going to the expense of buying a new PCI IDE Card - I tried loading an old copy of Windows 98, which worked - up to a point. I didn't have all the required drivers BUT then I tried removing the Firewire Card and Hey Presto Windows XP installed without a problem. So I'm guessing that there is a problem with the Firewire Card.

Now waiting for a replacement Firewire Card but in the meantime everything else seems to be working OK.

Many thanks to Transfusion for taking the time to try and help me.No problem
In the meantime, try resetting your BIOS settings to default:

Solve : Icons do not align to grid DESPITE the setting?

Answer»

In THIS WinXP system, when I move desktop icons slightly, it's like they are on ELASTIC bands, and they snap back into place. In another SIMILAR WinXP system of mine on a different computer, the icons stay PUT in any higgeldy-piggeldy position I drag them. The settings on the desktop menu for 'Arrange icons by...' are identical for the two WinXP systems. How might I fix the faulty (the latter) one ?Actually, they are aligning to the grid... the problem is, the grid is really small!

You can change the Icon spacing in the Appearance Applet (PROPERTIES on the desktop's Right-Click menu, on the Appearance Tab). Next, choose the "advanced..." and you should be in the Advanced Appearance dialog. click toe ComboBox under "item" and SELECT "Icon spacing (Horizontal)" and adjust it to a larger value. Do the same for the Vertical spacing. You could look at the values in these dialogs on the machine where the option works and use them on the machine where it doesn't appear to work.

After you've applied the changes and OK'd all the dialogs and gotten back to the desktop, you'll need to uncheck and recheck the "align to grid" option before it will take effect.

Thanks,
kennyOh, and please reply asapHold on... you are apparently very confused... There is a difference between DSL and Dial-up. There is no reason to switch from DSL Broadband back to painfully slow Dial-Up.
You need to contact an ISP in your area to allow DSL ACCESS through your phone-line. Once you have registered and they have activated a package for you, they will give you a Modem, which you can then connect to a Router for internet access.
If you have any questions feel free to tell us.I would take that Internet SPEED any day of the week. You have over double the broadband speed I get.I think what they are asking is how to do VoIP with a broadband connection.

So, you have two ISPs. Why? What DSL speed are you paying for with CenturyLink? They offer much higher speeds that what you're getting if you're willing to pay for a higher-speed plan. And, your other ISP, Charter Communications offers phone service if you're willing to pay for it. So, why have both ISPs?

If you want to completely avoid paying for regular phone service, then Skype or another Internet phone service is an option if you're willing to accept the lmitations of using your computer for phone COMMUNICATION. By limitation, I mean needing to have your computer on in order to make or receive phone calls and perhaps less reliability and sound quality for voice communication than with a regular phone service. ok. i have two houses. one has charter, one has qwest.Quote from: kbartlin18 on December 23, 2011, 09:00:14 PM

These two errors have similar causes and the same troubleshooting steps apply to both of them. These stop codes always occur during the startup process. When you encounter one of these stop codes, the following has happened:

1 The system has completed the Power-On Self-Test (POST).

2 The system has loaded NTLDR and transferred control of the startup process to NTOSKRNL (the kernel).

3 NTOSKRNL is confused. Either it cannot find the rest of itself, or it cannot read the file system at the location it believes it is stored.

When troubleshooting this error, your task is to find out why the Windows kernel is confused and fix the cause of the confusion.

THINGS to CHECK:
The SATA controller configuration in the system BIOS If the SATA controller gets toggled from ATA to AHCI mode (or vice versa), then Windows will not be able to talk to the SATA controller because the different modes require different drivers. Try toggling the SATA controller mode in the BIOS.

RAID settings You may receive this error if you've been experimenting with the RAID controller settings. Try changing the RAID settings back to Autodetect (usually accurate).

Improperly or poorly seated cabling Try reseating the data cables that connect the drive and its controller at both ends.

Hard drive failure Run the built-in diagnostics on the hard drive. Remember: Code 7 signifies correctable data corruption, not disk failure.
File system corruption Launch the recovery console from the Windows installation disc and run chkdsk /f /r.

Improperly configured BOOT.INI (Windows XP). If you have inadvertently erased or tinkered with the boot.ini file, you may receive stop code 0x7B during the startup process. Launch the recovery console from the Windows installation disc and run BOOTCFG /REBUILD

I have mentioned that after the uninstallation of the said application and after a reboot it happen. The thing as it is now I could not run 'safe mode', it load the drivers and after a while the same BSOD appeared again. The only thing is that I could see all the files in this hdd but could not find the system restore ( I doubt whether it help as I have not set a restore point before uninstalling the application.). Hoping you can provide further helps. I also wish to thanks patio for the reply I could not see in the BSOD screen this "0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" there was no error message but the parameter I am not SURE what it mean. Thanks again and I hope to hear from you all.about the Bootcfg command and its uses pls check site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291980If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.
2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool.
You’re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the “R” key to enter the recovery console:

3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number “1″).
Select the installation number, and hit Enter.
If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck).
You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:

4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem..
NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".
These commands are as follows:

CD..
ATTRIB -H C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -S C:\boot.ini
ATTRIB -R C:\boot.ini
del boot.ini
BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Note about the above command.
BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors.
It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:
A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.
B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel’s XD or AMD’s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option.
For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed.
If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful).
Here is your computer screen:

5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it’s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:

CHKDSK /R

6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit “Y”, then Enter to confirm your decision:

FIXBOOT

7. It’s time to reboot your PC by typing
EXIT
and pressing Enter.

With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.

If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above.I am happy to hear from you all and with all the help given here my sincere thanks to all. I for a start will try the recovery console to repair it with the XP CD. I am afraid it will ask for the password as it is I do not enter any password when installing XP. Can I overcome this password problem if it ask for it. Anyway I will try and see if it works if not I try others which are given here.If prompted for a password simply hit Enter...
If the system had no password it will continue.I have done all of this but still get blue screen and unable to boot in safe mode.

Solve : 2 graphic drivers??

Answer»

Good morning Forum,

I would just like to see if anyone has the same problem as me and if they know how to fix it. I have just purchased a Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 1GB Graphics card, thus i had to purchase a more powerful power supply. However, windows would not load up after all of this was done? So thus i reinstalled windows XP, hoping that it would do the TRICK, no difference. What happens is, When you load up windows XP, it goes to the boot LOGO, with the loading bar (This is after windows XP is installed) and then it just shows a light black screen. Why is this? And this is plugged into the graphics driver.

I am not trying to install my windows 7 disc i have purchased. I am going to see how that goes, and then i am going to post an update when the installation is finished. But why is this doing that to windows XP? I like windows XP, i don't exactly want to change over to windows 7, it's unnecessary? Please help!

**UPDATES FROM ME WILL BE POSTED BELOW**To be more clear, give as much info. for your computer model/specs(mobo) and your newly purchased graphics card. Check also any documentations of your machine if your NEW card is compatible with your on-board chipset and check your BIOS set-up for the installed card. You MAY also have an on-board card that needs to be configured under BIOS settings. Have you done a complete reformat successfully? With card installed or not?

here is wat it says on the blue screen:

A PROBLEM has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to yr computer

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen APPEARS again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any NEW hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory optons such as cacing or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe mode.

Solve : Cannot Complete Download Due To 'IO device error'?

Answer»

My sister just had a fresh install of Windows XP on her desktop computer, when she TRIES to download something from uTorrent, she gets this error- cannot complete download due to IO device error'
I have a few ideas what this might be, the first was a missing driver, in her device manager the only ONE red or yellow is a yellow listing of 'Secure II driver'....
I did a google search on this IO device error, and it SEEMS others have this problem when trying to download to an external hard drive, which she is doing as well....But nothing I found has been helpful...

She is on a
XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack #3
Sempron desktop computer

Any idea where to go from here? After the fresh install did you install the system board drivers?

Can be called chipset drivers....

Don't download to external hard drive, download to internal hard drive & then attempt to copy it to the external. If copy gives the same error, test the external dirve with the drive manufacturer's software; also, a reformat of the external drive MAY solve this issue. One of my external hard drives give the Device I/O error every once in a while; it always tests OK, but after a reformat, it has no issues.

Solve : .NET Framework will not install!?

Answer»

Here's some of the problems I'm having after System Recovery. ( yup, another thread about a System Recovery gone bad. )

The computer is HP Pavilion a656x

The issue I've dubbed priority 1 at this point is to install the most recent .NET FRAMEWORK

When installing drivers and Catalyst Control CENTER for ATI Radeon 9200 a message popped up saying I need version 2.0 or later of .NET framework. Although, it went ahead and installed the Control Center and the drivers anyways... (ATI icon in my system tray)

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86
fails to install.

I believe I have version .NET 2.0 on this computer, so I don't know why ATI says I still need .NET 2.0 or greater.
(How do I check my .NET version?)

Ultimately, I'm trying to fix blurryness. The text on the screen is blurry only in certain areas of the screen. I'll explain it as best I can... Picture yourself reading text from left to right, divide the screen into 1 inch wide vertical columns, every few inches the text is blurry, then clear, then blurry, then clear, etc.

I'm just shooting in the dark now, reading countless threads about similar problems on many forums testing different solutions.

All my data is backed up so that's not an issue.

And please don't tell me to do a FRESH install of windows because guess what, HP NEVER GAVE ME RECOVERY DISCS!The .net frameworks are not cunulative...as the Service Packs are...they are independent of each other...

Here you will FIND a repair method for the installation of whichever ver. you need..
Although it's fairly dated it should work on any version...Quote

(How do I check my .NET version?)

Several things:

-The latest version of .NET Framework is 4.0; however, this is largely irrelevant because:

-the versions are not cumulative. What this means is that if want to use a program developed for Version 1.1 of the framework, you need to have version 1.1 of the framework installed; that is, you can have 3.5 installed, but you won't be able to run the program designed for version 1.1. The versions are essentially separate products. The common thread of discussion on this seems to be that you should only install a version of the .NET framework when you get a program that requires that version; This is sensible, but the problem is that it's not always clear when you don't have the right version. In any case, the error message is telling you, basically, that ATI CCC requires .NET 3.5; the (DOWNLOAD also contains updates to 2.0, which may be causing the confusion). Now, the main problem here is that for some reason .NET 3.5 isn't installing.

If the installer for ATI Catalyst Control Center is trying to install the framework and failing, you might have better luck installing it yourself and then trying to install Catalyst Control Center:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&displaylang=en

That might help get it running.

This sounds more like a monitor issue; see if another monitor looks any better to check.

If it's an lcd, the clock or focus might be off. Try using any "auto" feature available on it and see if that helps (also, with an LCD, use 60hz).

If it's a CRT, sounds like it might be just starting to show signs of monitor aging. Sometimes monitors will start looking blurry in their higher resolutions. See if it looks any better (less blurry) at lower resolutions.

Either way, from the way I understand how they work, I don't think a video card could cause blurryness in the monitor.

Solve : account help?

Answer»

I have win xp pro and an admin and a limited account on it.

When I am on the admin or limited account I can right click the camara I have pluged into the USB port and left click properties and pick were it puts photos automaticly and it works.

But I see whatever I set up in one account will make it so on the other account.

Why can't I have eatch account work by it self?

I am soory you reply did not come to me.
And I THINK I asked in a rong way

I have win xp pro and stup an admin account and a limited account.

S everyone on the Limited account can't mass up systemn files and go into other hard drives and do things.

But I see that things I have setup on the Admin account like were to put photos when a camara is pluged into the USB. Stays the same on the Limited account.

And a LOT of things for the programs stay the same . However I have things on the Admin account stay the same for all Limited accounts.

So if I make all account Admin account they will all work and people can make changes for them selve am I right?

Like when people plug in a camara on the Limited account they want there photos to go to were they want not were I want my photos to go on my Admin account.

So if I make all accounts admin can they mass up system files and get into other hard drives and Delette things?

This is why I have all Limited accounts but my Admin account.

Please helpoI am not sure if the whole idea of making each account an admin account will work, but I have another solution.
What if I created a batch file that you could place on the root folder of your camera? When the batch file is RAN, it would detect which user account is being used and then copy the pictures to the appropriate location. If you want to do this, then you need to give a GOOD explanation of the folders on your camera, where the pictures are located, and the drive letter.thats SOUND good but it seems like a lot to go through.

I realy thought every Limited account could have it's own place setup.

Like I say I pluged the camara in when I was on Limeted account and right click camara and set it up. And then I did the same thing on Admin account.

And only one place will work for all. I thought this is because all the accounts had to be Admin?
And then I thought I was doing it incorectly

Solve : Windows XP - c_437.nls Missing or Corrupt - Recovery does not work?

Answer»

Hi there!

I would really appreciate any help with my computer dilemma. I am a complete newbie in terms of computers and somehow managed to implode my father's LAPTOP. It's an HP laptop purchased within the LAST year, with Windows XP O/S. I'm really not sure about any of the other specs of the computer.

The screen froze so I shut down manually, and when I restarted I got the following error "Windows cannot start up because windows/system32/c_437.nls is missing or corrupt". I searched for some advice and tried to replace the file using the XP installation CD, going into Recovery and typing EXPAND -R D:\I386\c_437.nl_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls and it would not work, saying that the file did not exist. I also tried EXPAND D:\I386\c_437.nl_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls

I really have no idea what these prompts mean and what I could be doing wrong. It seems to be a simple enough problem to fix, is there a step that I am missing?

Thanks so much for your help,
Pat

Use this command instead: expand d:\i386\c_437.nl_ c:\windows\system32\

You may want to clean off your XP CD with a lint free cloth beforehand...Thank you so much for the quick response! I will try the command that you suggested!Help! I tried this and the file copied but I'm STILL getting the same error message when I boot up...Try repeating the same step suggested on recovery console. Again...again...You could also refer to this site : http://www.datarecovery.com.sg/data_recovery/troubleshoot_system_files_corruption.htm

Well, it looks like one (maybe the main one) problem is the SnoopFree software. Does that sound right?Yes it does...it's banging heads with PCTools as well...I have uninstalled SnoopFree. What should I do about PC Tools?I don't use it myself...
If it was highly recommended i would have heard about it here at the Forums by now. What do you recommend for a FIREWALL?

Neither do I. In this case (as in many OTHERS), I don't explain the news, I just report it. If anyone can offer an explanation, I would be very interested.Gremlins...

Solve : print record of minimized Word documents??

Answer»

Quote from: Sidewinder on NOVEMBER 08, 2010, 05:32:32 AM

The MRU is stored in the registry. Unfortunately it is stored as a sequence of null-terminated strings which I could not figure out how to represent in a batch file. This little snippet of VBScript code may help:

Code: [Select]' List the documents in the Word MRU registry key
'
Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001

strComputer = "."
strKeyPath = "Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft Word\Settings\Save As\File Name MRU"
strValueName = "Value"

Set oReg=GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & _
strComputer & "\root\default:StdRegProv")

oReg.GetMultiStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, strValueName, arrValues

If Right(LCase(WScript.FullName), 11) = "cscript.exe" Then
For Each strValue In arrValues
WScript.Echo "Document - " & strValue
Next
Else
For Each strValue In arrValues
strBlock = strBlock & "Document - " & strValue & vbCrLf
Next
WScript.Echo strBlock
End If

Save the script with a VBS extension. It can be RUN from the command prompt as cscript scriptname.vbs or wscript scriptname.vbs If run with the former, output will be DIRECTED to the console as a list of documents. If run with the latter, outout will be a single window with all the documents listed. To produce a hardcopy, use cscript and redirect the output to your printer Ex: cscript scriptname.vbs > lpt1 .

Note: I'm still using Word XP (2002) so I got the Word 2003 registry key from the internet. With any luck it is correct. In any case, the registry is used only for reading, so there is no danger of mucking it up.

Good luck.

Uhmm this looks complex for me. Is there any simpler explanation? Thanks.
Wow! This is your lucky day. Today, and today only, explanations are just 5¢ and simpler explanations are just 7¢. As usual the script is free.

Quote
Const HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001

strComputer = "."
strKeyPath = "Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft Word\Settings\Save As\File Name MRU"
strValueName = "Value"

Assigns the registry key to various variables. The registry key is specific to Word 2003 and will be different for other versions. Also designates the local computer to do the processing.

Quote
Set oReg=GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & _
strComputer & "\root\default:StdRegProv")

oReg.GetMultiStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, strValueName, arrValues

This is the heart of the script. Connects to the WMI class which contains the properties and methods needed to access the Windows registry. The MRU is a sequence of null-terminated strings, which the GetMultiStringValue returns as an array. Arrays are easy to process in VBScript, a registry sequence of null-terminated strings not so much.

Quote
If arrValues(0) = "" Then
WScript.Echo "MRU List Is Empty"
WScript.Quit
End If

If the MRU is empty, this error trap will allow for a gentle landing instead of the script CRASHING into the side of a mountain. Well maybe not so dramatic, but if you have an empty MRU you'll see the results from this code.

Quote
If Right(LCase(WScript.FullName), 11) = "cscript.exe" Then
For Each strValue In arrValues
WScript.Echo "Document - " & strValue
Next
Else
For Each strValue In arrValues
strBlock = strBlock & "Document - " & strValue & vbCrLf
Next
WScript.Echo strBlock
End If

This code formats the output returned in the array of MRU items. It queries which interpreter is being used (VBScript has two) and takes advantage of how the echo instruction works in each.

And there you have it. Please pay the cashier on your way out.

Good luck.

Solve : External Hard Drive Issues!?

Answer»

Hello, I've been struggling with this on and off for a while now... but basically I have an External Hard Drive (Mad Dog Multimedia) which was previously reformatted to work for a mac which has since died. I now need the External Hard Drive to work on my WINDOWS XP based laptop (which doesn't have ENOUGH free space to clean up space), but can't even get it to show up in 'my computer' and cannot figure out how to reformat it again. I've managed to locate it under 'Computer Management', but can't seem to assign it a Drive Letter or Path. PLEASE Help! Do you want to save any of the stuff on the drive or just wipe it out and start fresh?Windows will not recognise any storage device without a compatible file system and thus will not assign it a drive letter. If you are ABLE to view the hard drive in computer management then you should have the option of right clicking it and choosing format. Then you can assign a drive letter.

Solve : Upgraded my Antivirus but computer is now shutting down on it's own?

Answer»

I have Norton Antivirus on my computer and i have not had any problems with it up until about a week ago. I had the 2010 VERSION but it let me upgrade it to the 2011 version for free and that is when i started to have problems. When i am on sites like Facebook or Youtube the computer will start getting really loud and then it will shut itself down completely. It does it a lot when i am trying to play games or watch a video. Is my Norton the problem or is my computer infected? It might be a problem with your hardware.

What do you mean "it gets really loud?"

What kind of noise is it?

When was the last time you blew the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air? This only happens when you are on the internet and then at CERTAIN sites? The noise is a really loud humming SOUND and then it will shut off. I am not too computer savvy so i am not sure if it is suppose to MAKE that type of sound. I have never used a can of compressed air to clean it just a swiffer duster. I have a desktop Dell computer Windows xp 2002 version.Quote

Do the sound come out from the speaker/s or inside the CPU? Any distinct sound coming from PSU exhaust fan? Cleaning it would be the first step. Download Speedfan hardware MONITOR to check temperature reading. Quote from: Allan on November 07, 2010, 06:09:28 AM

Solve : accidental click removes startup menu?

Answer»

This is a long STORY but here goes. We installed a new hard drive in a Dell 2400. We finally have it up and running but I wanted to change the huge screen to normal. I went into Control Panel, Display, Settings, and monitor. I must have clicked on something really bad because when I restarted my computer I had no startup screen. The tower turns on and is running perfectly. The monitor shows the Dell logo, and then goes from black to a deep midnight BLUE. I have tried the monitor driver disk and the F8 key on startup but to no avail. PLEASE help me get out of this screen since I have nothing to click on.You must have change the REFRESH rate settings and uncheck the box below it. The monitor must have not support the changes and upon windows booting it cannot configure the correct settings and it hangs on black STATE. You must make it to safemode option to work around this. Make sure you tap the F8 option key either rapidly if not then try tapping it just once on first splash screen, either way.

Solve : Can't install program on recently reformated xp dell computer?

Answer»

I am not a savvy computer person but recently reformated my Dell Windows XP computer. I know I am missing some things because when I tried to use my camera I had to install the drivers (I had to ask someone at work what the error message meant - so as I said I am not savvy).
My HUSBAND has a very old music program (writing songs on sheet music, plays it back and prints it out) called "MusicTime". A while ago I was able to PUT the program on my Dell Xp computer by purchasing a floppy disk drive in ORDER to use the floppy disk to install. Now when I try to install it again I receive these errors:
FILE ERROR: Can not find LOMIDI.DLL. When I click close then I get this error message: Set Up Installation Error - Unable to locate the script file ERROR 107. What do I do now? After installing the OS did you install the chipset driver followed by all other drivers?Sorry, but I don't know what a chip set driver is. We could only find the reinstall disk and did not have any other disks with drivers. I was able to go on the net and get a driver for my netcard and my video.Go to the Dell Website and enter your Service Tag number to find the drivers for your computer. Download and install the chipset driver then install the video driver, sound CARD driver, and any other relevant drivers.I went to Dell and downloaded every driver they had for my service tag but I am STILL getting the error when I try to install the program from the floppy. I ever tried installing it from the start menu and typing A:SETUP in the run box but I still get the same error. From the errpr message it appears the floppy is corruptted...

You could try a floppyu head cleaner. After downloading the drivers, did you install them?

Solve : Windows Media Player does not use the letter "A" in numerical order when listin?

Answer»

I have just noticed that WMP11 does not RECOGNIZE the letter A as the first song in numerical order. If the song starts with an A, it will place it in order using the second word of the song. The song name stays in order in a regular file. The tag file is correct. Anybody ever notice this and if so, have you found the cure. I guess I am obsessive about having things in order. Thanks.
I'm not entirely sure what you are asking, or how you have your music arranged. Typically, songs are listed by ALBUM, and then the tract order off the album. Do you just have a giant list of songs, not separated by album or artist?

In album titles "the" is ignored, LIKE in "the best of whoever" and it's put in order with all the other albums of that artist.I should add I just started playing around with MP and got a list of songs arranged by song title. My first impression is that you have as much music as I do, it is terrible way to arrange music, but at LEAST now I see what you are asking.I should have said alphabetical order rather than numerical order. I have not noticed WMP not recognizing "the". My music is organized by artist and tags have only the artist and song name. All other info is edited out. Thanks for replying and if you find the culprit that does this, let me KNOW.

The link to Microsoft well that just lost me. we do not have backup COMPUTER at all!
What we have is a new but French LAPTOP with win 7 installed and a new xp pro cd.
I gather from what i have READ that there may be missing drivers in the mother board is this correct and if so
how can this be corrected.
Thanks Kevin.
You'll have to get them from Packard Bell. Maybe you can get the original CD from them if you supply them your serial number. Packard Bell is no longer sold in North America.
http://www.packardbell.com/index.htmlI've never seen one blue screen before installation started before. How are you going about installing? How far do you get?

You should check packard bell's website to make sure that they have XP drivers for that computer before installing. If they don't have drivers for XP then you'll probably be stuck with win7.All sorted now.

Solve : Boot problems with Acer Aspire one Laptop?

Answer»

My daughter didn't plug her laptop in and the battery died. When she PLUGGED it in and tried to start it, she GOT the start up screen asking which mode to start... Safe mode, safe Mode with network, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last known Good Config and Start Windows Normally.
Normally, she can use Start Windows normally and it will boot normally. Now, it will go like it's going to boot, we'll get the MS Windows XP screen with the "timer bar", a BRIEF blue screen, and a brief Acer screen, then it will go BACK to the same start up screen asking which mode to start, like it's on replay.
She is currently running Windows XP, the laptop is less than a yr old and primarily is used for homework and of course Facebook. any suggestions I can try, would be much appreciated.

Almost sounds like she picked up a virus...??Quote from: Bravzfan on November 05, 2010, 04:50:07 PM

My daughter didn't plug her laptop in and the battery died....Almost sounds like she picked up a virus...??
This is all because Windows was not shutdown properly which can sometimes corrupt the startup files. Usually, it's not a problem, but not always, which you have found out. I would boot to the Recovery Console and perform chdsk /r. If that doesn't work perform a repair install. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. You will need to use one of the Acer CD's provided or boot to the Acer Diagnostics partition via the System SETUP (i.e. BIOS, CMOS).

Solve : black screen on statup windows xp?

Answer»

I don't understand how to type in the commandI don't no how to type in the commandWhat do you mean?
Using your keyboard...

Let me repost my instructions, since the previous ones look little bit out of whack...

The most common cause is the executing PnP (Plug and pray) and ACPI routines
To fix the issue, we need to access the COMPUTER from Recovery Console.

1. To start the Recovery Console directly from the Windows XP CD you WOULD do the following:

  • Insert the Windows XP cd in your computer.
  • Restart your computer so you are booting off of the CD.
  • When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press the R button on your keyboard to start the Recovery Console.
  • The Recovery Console will start and ask you which Windows installation you would like to log on to. If you have multiple Windows installations, it will list each one, and you would enter the number associated with the installation you would like to work on and press enter. If you have just one Windows installation, type 1 and press enter.
  • It will then prompt you for the Administrator's password. If there is no password, simply press enter. Otherwise type in the password and then press enter.
  • If you entered the correct password you will now be PRESENTED with a C:\Windows> prompt and you can start using the Recovery Console.
2. Type map and press enter.
It will give you the drive letters.
Note down the letter of you CD-ROM.
If it is a letter other than E you should replace the letter E with your CD drive letter when applying the expand COMMAND later on if the command is needed to be applied.

Type following commmands, pressing Enter after each one.
  • ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys atapi.old
(It will RETURNS to the prompt again without notification)
  • copy c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\atapi.sys c:\windows\system32\drivers
(If you get a notification "1 file(s) copied" you don't need to do the next expand command and go to exit command. But if you get notification that the file doesn't exist proceed with expand command)
  • expand e:\I386\atapi.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers
(You should be notified that the file expanded)
  • exit
You may remove the CD or let Windows boot normally.

When I started my computer it says "Reboot and select proper BOOT device or insert boot media in selected boot device" and then i inserted my windows xp installer cd and started my computer. whenever i start my computer i NEED to insert that cd. please help me to cure this problem.
Specifications:
OS: Windows XP sp3
RAM: 640MB
hard disk: 37GBLaptop or Desktop? If its a Desktop, try first removing USB keyboard on powering up your CPU. Provide also some other input on your machine as to brand/model. It could also be on your BIOS set-up priority as the CD drive is set first instead of the HD. Navigate and check and once set, save and exit. It could also be that the HD is bad or the PSU itself. Is the HD also recognized in BIOS? You could also run a diagnostic test for your HD.
Do you also HAPPEN to install anything recently before this happen or any previous issue that could lead to your problem? Its a desktop, there are no usb keyboards or mouse. And i cannot access to my BIOS setup as the ERROR message comes first and when i insert the cd no chance of typing the keys so that bios setup comes. no previous issues.Did it happen just recently? suddenly? On first boot(power on) try race tapping to boot to BIOS. Or try hitting Pause button.Your pause/break idea works, and i opened the bios setup, boot for HD was disabled and i enabled it now and it does not shows any error messages now. Thanks for that. Than you very much for that cause it was there for more than 4 months and i resolved the problem today. Thanks.

Does it protect better against power failures when defragging or accessing files or head crashes etc.,
or does it merely make it more difficult for the user to alter important files.

When the mains failed my laptop continued to run on battery and I achieved a controlled shutdown,
but the external drive using external Mains power shut down instantly.
Although no files were being accessed, the Event Log captured FTDisk Errors.

I have also seen FTDisk errors when Acronis v 11 dismounts an image file,
in fact once Acronis has mounted an image an FTDisk error is guaranteed unless it remains mounted until Windows is shutdown.

Would those FTDisk Errors have happened for both FAT32 and NTFS partitions on the external drive ?
Does such an FTDisk Error have more serious consequences to FAT32 than NTFS files.

I had a 4 GB FAT32 partition H:\ with 2 GB free space and a 2 GB collection of Portable (non-installed) applications.
I backed up the files and replaced with a 4 GB NTFS partition and copied the files back.
Everything worked perfectly for me as an Admin.

My non-admin daughter can no longer use a BAT script that updates an INI file in this partition.
I plan to use CACLS to allow all users FULL control of the FOLDER that holds the INI files.
I would appreciate advice upon the INHERIT options CI, OI, and IO.

BIG QUESTION :-
If I give her full access to the entire partition H:\,
will that degrade disaster immunity down to the level of FAT32.

NB
I had 6 off NTFS plus 3 off FAT32 partitions on my 160 GB laptop HDD.
I launched Partition Wizard and closed all other applications to tweak a non-system partition.
I clicked the final "Apply" and achieved the ultimate finality - I lost all 9 partitions.
The Partition Wizard BOOT CD was able to recover all but the HIDDEN Acronis Secure Zone FAT32 partition.
When I booted up Windows warned that H:\ was corrupt and it wanted to check it.
CHKDSK found and fixed a lot of lost clusters.
More recently I have run chkdsk on the largest partition, 47 GB of FAT32, and it found 100 KB of lost clusters

I have never seen lost clusters from a NTFS partition.
Does NTFS use clusters like FAT32, or does Chkdsk not test for them,
or does NTFS have tighter control over its clusters ?

If I give all users full control over H:\ will that increase its vulnerability to lost clusters ?

N.B. I now disconnect from the Internet and disable my A.V/Firewall/Behavior block protection when altering partitions.

More the former then the LATTER. Security settings have nothing to do with a file-system's reliability. In fact in many ways it can detract from it.

FTDisk warnings, not errors. An Error would result in a blue screen and the NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM or FAT32_FILE_SYSTEM (obviously depending on the filesystem in question) STOP code.

Generally speaking- there is absolutely no reason to go spelunking in the Event Viewer, and even less reason to create conclusions based on it's contents. All of my Windows machines' Event Viewers are riddled with what EventVwr describes as "Errors" but I've yet to have any real problems. The only Problems that most people have with regards to event viewer is when they try to take a "corrective action" against something in it. Then they cause problems. The EventViewer is intended to supplement additional data after a problem has already been identified; It answers "why" questions when you already know the "what". Trying to look through the eventvwr just to see if there is a "what" will cause you to see "What's" everywhere; for example, just because there is a event viewer entry labelled as Critical or "error" doesn't mean it NEEDS your attention. If that was the case, you would have been told by a dialog box or balloon.

Basically: Any Event Log entry that doesn't have a corresponding visible element (such as a blue screen or dialog box, or balloon) is largely irrelevant and not worth worrying about. With FTDISK errors of the form "Delayed write failed..." usually it just means that you will lose a bit of data. NTFS is fault tolerant in that in keeps a transaction log; in the case of FTDISK errors that say "failed to flush the transaction log... Corruption may occur" or something to that effect, the extent of said corruption would me the loss of some recent writes. a Chkdsk will fix these errors and bring the filesystem back to perfect health, assuming any problems result from this at all.

See above paragraph for why reading meanings into Event viewer entries is a bad idea.

I think so. They might have different labels and/or descriptions (FAT32 doesn't have a transaction log) but the jist will be the same.

Neither have any consequences whatsoever. That's why they are in the event log. They aren't issues, but they are logged because they are noteworthy. One way to think of it is as the computer's diary; it writes about interesting things that happened, "I couldn't write to the disk again, I think she's playing hard to get" type stuff.

No. the "disaster immunity" of NTFS and FAT32 are the same, which is to say, virtually nil. "disaster immunity" only comes in one form. Backups. relying on the file systems error recovery or the duplication in a RAID array is foolish and asking for trouble.

Was this the built-in Partitioning tool? If Not, No idea what you are talking about (as in, never used the program). Sounds like a badly designed program in that case. In the former, it was probably a mis-click... I had a similar "problem" whereby I lost three years of work on an internal drive while attempting to fix another unrelated external.

NTFS has transaction logging and USN journalling. This pretty much obsoletes lost chains/clusters.

A lost cluster is a location on the disk that is allocated, but never actually referenced. (by a file). a file is stored in units called clusters; FAT32 has clusters of different sizes depending on the size of the disk. NTFS is almost always 4K. Either way, a cluster is the smallest unit of data you can store on a disk. If you store a 1 byte file, it takes up at the very least a single. On your average NTFS drive, a 1 byte file occupies 4KB on disk. You can see this in action. Create a file; and then view the properties. the "Size on disk" item will be a multiple of the size of the clusters on the disk the file is stored on. (well, unless you compress or encrypt the file). With Fat32, these were tracked essentially as a chain; one cluster would point to another cluster which would point to another until nothing is pointed at (at which point, it's the end of the file). a Lost chain is when a disk error or write error causes, either the "next cluster" pointer to become null on a cluster (thus making it the end of the file) or when errant writes create allocated clusters that aren't associated with files. Chkdsk determines if a cluster is associated with a file by following every file and seeing if any file uses it; to do this, it looks up the file in the directory (which holds a pointer to the first cluster of data of said file, and then follows that chain until the chain ends. If there are clusters that are never passed using this METHOD, they are lost clusters. If clusters are passed over twice, then you have "cross-linked" clusters, which is similar to lost chains, except instead of having no file referencing the data, there are two (or sometimes more) files referencing it. Generally, only a single one is correct; editing any one of the other files can and usually will change the contents of the other files (since they effectively "share" their contents.

Anyway, I'm not sure how NTFS does it; it's still possible to get lost chains/clusters, but it's more robust against them. It doesn't matter much anyway.

No.Many thanks.

I will now give FULL access to all users on H:\.

Partition Wizard is a Canadian third party Partition manager.
It costs $699 for the "technician license" which suggests it is intended for discerning users.
I use the free license which does the same as the $699 product excepting the omission of :-
Merge Partition;
Convert dynamic disk to basic without data loss;
change cluster size without data loss.

This free version has always worked perfectly on very many other occasions.
I think its perfect history made me over confident,
and although I closed down applications on the task bar,
I left the Internet connected and Comodo Internet Security was "armed to the teeth".
I will not make that mistake again.

If I ever have another problem I may simply use the Boot CD to ensure no "external disturbance".

I have previously used several versions of Easeus Partition Managers.
My experience of Partition Managers is that they generally suggest closing down other applications before they do any "heavy lifting".

Again, many thanks for explanations.

Solve : Memory cards crash computers?

Answer»

So I've got two COMPUTERS, a laptop and a desktop, both running XP about 4 or 5 years old. I have two 2GB SD cards and one 8GB SDHC card that I use with a Kodak ZI6 video camera. I make a lot of videos in my free time and it's something I like to do a lot. I've had the camera for a few months and it worked great. I bought my first SDHC card and when I used it in either computer it completely crashed the thing and after some research learned my motherboard was too old to support it, which is understandable. The other two SD memory cards I had worked fine for a while. In September after I came back from a TRIP with hours and hours of video. I found that when I plugged my memory cards in several different ways no matter what my computer froze and I had to kill it: using the SD card SLOT on the computer or leaving the card in the camera and utilizing the USB hookup on the camera. I used a temporary solution by borrowing a newer computer and putting the files on there, then transferring them to my computer using an external hard drive as the middle man. I haven't got a chance to try a different memory card besides my three on the computers, but it does work on my friend's newer one running Vista purchased within the last year. Any help would be really appreciated because this is killing me.

Laptop: 2 gigs RAM, Webroot, symantic, Norton, Aol comp check up and spyware protection, search and destroy
Desktop: ATI radeon card, 2.5 gigs RAM, same antivirus

Both have SERVICE pack 3 and legal installationQuote

You need to classify this.

My personal recommendation is to not use 8GB cards. Use only certified 2GB cards from a major maker. Your computer is not reliable.

It seems that many people not not understand the bigger is not always better. The 2 GB cards have a better track record for compatibility.Memory card may be corrupt. SD especially SDHC are prone to crashes
1. Have you tried using a memory card reader?
2. Where the any 'memory card error/s' upon loading SD/SDHC into camera before switching to computer then crashes? Different Digital Camera models(old, new) and now different digital memory card models can cause memory errors, data loss, firmware bugs.
3. Reformatting your card(after file back-up)may solve the issue...Every once in a while SD card manufactures change the specifications on the cards without relabeling them. So old card readers cannot read new cards, but I have never seen the card crash the computer. If the card reader can't read the card it won't.
Are you using an external card reader or a card reader build into your computer?

Because your computer has been crashing you can bet that several files have been corrupted. You should run check disk and run sfc /scannow into a cmd prompt. Also update the drivers for the card reader.
Okay so I was aware that the 8gb one wouldn't work because of the oldness of my computers, but I've been using the 2gb ones for a few months with no problem. I'll try and reformat the cards but that'll be tricky because they freeze my computer. I'll probably try doing it in a new one. get back to yaIt is possible to have more memory than the system can handleFormat them on a WORKING newer machine...you can also partition the 8G into 4 equal 2G partitions...FAT32
I use a 16GB SDHC card with a USB card reader in an old Pentium II laptop with USB1.1 & WinXP and have no issues. Therefore, it's not the age of the motherboard, the size of the memory card, etc. What card reader are you using?I either use the built in card reader or USB plugin on my camera with the memory card inside of it on the desktop, or just USB on the laptop. I've yet to try and reformat them but it seems to me like that might be the solution. I'll also try partitioning the one.Your memory card may have hand a virus.Quote from: frobro on November 02, 2010, 08:45:33 PM

I assume they are already formatted FAT32; I wouldn't recommend partitioning them. Did you originally format them with the computer or the camera? Reformat them with the camera which will create the camera's necessary directory structure.
