Solve : am using a window xp home edition version 5.1(build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814_123?

i keep on getting feature you are trying to use is on a CD ROM or other removable disk is not available. insert the "status"disk and click OK.each time i turn on my system, and for me to turn off my system i have to press the power botton, can one say what is the problem how to fix it please thanks you.Sounds as if something that is starting up on the computer requires the Windows XP CD. Most computers (but not all) will have some TYPE of CD that is used to install Windows on the computer. If you have this CD or a Windows XP CD you could try inserting this and browsing to the CD and see if Windows detects what it needs.

Otherwise my only suggestion would be to try to determine what is starting up that could be causing this issue.

Have you installed any programs recently? If so you may want to try uninstalling / reinstalling through the add/remove programs in the Windows Control Panel.

What brand of computer is this?

its a hurricane system. Is this a hacked/custom version of Windows?no its not As per CH...

Did you recently install any software? There's a program on your computer that needs an installation CD in order to continue. Sometimes you'll get this if you were attempting UPDATES from Office Update Home.

Do you have any Microsoft Office product installed on your computer? If so, you may need to use the installation CD that came with the product.not that i know of not the only one using it and only gimp2 software was installed and uninstalled to check if it was the problemDo you have a printer attached to this computer? If so, turn the computer and printer off...disconnect the printer from the computer...restart the computer and see if you get the same error.

Keep us posted...How about Windows Updates, have you gotten them lately?

As GlitchPC stated it is usually related to a Microsoft Office product but looking through this Google search it could be some other software that requires an install CD.

Also see this MS KB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217706

To continue Setup without these errors, you must insert your Office disc into the CD-ROM drive, or restore network connectivity before the Windows Installer can continue. You cannot remove Office in these cases when any components are registered to run from the CD-ROM.

ACPI has been around since 1996, and APM has been around even longer.

But the question is- is the feature to turn off the machine enabled, and additionally why must they hold the button to shut down?

Solve : Increasing a Number in a batch file?

Answer»

I have a batch that RUNS an an update to an application on various servers, here is a snippet of it:

net use n: \\fs-home-ch\vol1\apps\
COPY "C:\Laserforms Updates\LFMFormUpdate(LUS Update 301).lfu" "n:\nal\laserforms 9.02\"
"\\fs-home-ch\vol1\apps\NAL\LaserForms 9.02\LFMFormUpdate(LUS Update 301).lfu"

I need to add a line that increases the update number (in this case LUS Update 301) by 1 each time after the batch file has run, so it will be ready for the next update. Can this be done?

Also, when it performs the 3rd line the app is LAUNCHED and user user intervention is required to select Yes to a question, I need to be able to eliminate the user intervention so it automatically runs and then closes the app after the update is complete, again user intervention is currently needed to close the app. Can this be done?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Solve : Can I REPAIR Windows XP on a Slave Drive??

Answer» QUOTE from: gc11530 on March 05, 2009, 11:24:09 AM
Before I do anything else, I want to copy everything from the slave drive onto the primary drive just in case I lose data

You might infect the other computer if the slave drive has a virus.

Right CLICK the drive in Windows Explorer and select scan with (whatever antivirus program you are running)

Then after you have removed the infections take ownership of the FILES you want and copy them.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Then put the slave back in the computer that it came from, and use the HP recovery disks to restore back to factory settings.

After you have done that the best way to move the files back to your hard drive is to share the files on a network.thats what I had thought too except that I should have mentioned that but wasnt sure if it would be gone or not.I did exactly as you suggested; THANKS!you are most welcome

Hey guys

i've got a HP laptop running on XP (just got it) and im having issues with starting it up. ive done some research on google and apparently the problem is related to the bios boot sequence (f2 from the first screen) . i cant get to the welcome screen and it just loops over and over.....

thanksFloppy
CD
HDD
Works for me...thanks! i'll give that a try and ley you know how i get on If you can get to "Windows ADVANCED Options" menu via F8 function key; select "DISABLE automatic restart on system failure" to stop the reboot. System should stop on Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). "Post" the exact MESSAGE text/numbers that appear. Maybe someone here can make some sense out of it.

From the "Windows Advanced Options" menu you might also try:
o Safe Mode
o Last KNOWN good configuration

To access menu, tap F8 key once or twice a second as the system starts up.

Solve : Unable to DELETE inbox emails?

Answer»

For the last week I have not been able to delete emails from my INBOX. I need probale causes and fixit suggestions..Would probably help if we knew what e-mail client you use...DUH>>>>>>
Outlook ExpressMsCook,

ONE of the causes this may have happened could be due to a corrupt Inbox folder. How it became corrupt, may be hard to determine, since it could be RELATED to damaged FILES, or a malware infection.

The following can be used as a remedy...please let us know if it works. Note: Make sure you save any e-mail you want to save before performing the below procedure.

It will create a new Inbox folder...replacing your old one.

The following came from TechGuy.org...

Try this:

Quote

1. Open OE and save or move any messages you want in the Inbox.

2. Click on Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder.

3. On the Store Location box, highlight the address by pressing the Tab key on your keyboard.

4. Press Control+C (both at the same time) to COPY the address to the clipboard.

5. Click Cancel on all boxes and close OE.

6. Click on Start>Run.

7. Press Control+V (both at the same time) to paste the address into the command line and click OK. The store folder containing all the DBX files should open. Find the one named Inbox and delete it. When you next open OE a new Inbox will be created and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Keep us posted...Thanks again for your help! I followed your instructions carefully and all the emails were moved from the INBOX, however, now the ones I selected to keep in the new folder cannot be deleted, also...I went to my sent emails and can't delete them either. My Inbox is EMPTY. But I still cannot get rid of unwanted emails from my sent file or the new folder...MsCook...

Okay...since that didn't work...let's try another route. Please follow the directions from Microsoft listed here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/oerepair.mspx

Please...keep us posted...

Solve : problem sharing hardDrive between Vista and XP?

Answer»

I have two computers networked together. One is a Vista OS and the other is an XP OS. This might sound confusing so please bare with me.

I can successfully map the Vista drive when I'm on the XP computer, and I can Successfully map the XP drive, when I'm on the Vista computer, but it's not all equal..

When I'm on the XP computer I AM able to access all the folders on the Vista hard drive, but I am unable to save any documents from the XP computer to the Vista harddrive. I get a "you do not have permission" error.

Other problem is, when I'm on the Vista computer and I access the mapped harddrive on the XP computer, I'm not allowed to access all folders...I'm "denied" access to the "Windows" and "Program Files" folders, however I AM able to save documents from the Vista computer ONTO the XP harddrive.

Make sense??

any suggestions here...........

new info...

I've just discovered that the "Windows" and "Programs Files" folders on the XP computer cannot be shared, supposedly because they are being "used" by the operating SYSTEM.......which is fine,,,,,whatever

So the only question I have at this point is, how do I get "permission" to save documents to the Vista HardDrive, when I'm on the XP, computer.........When I try to save documents or files to the Vista HardDrive using the "save as" command I get a, "You do not have permission to save to this directory" error..

I suppose I could just put the document in a folder that is shared, but I'd just LIKE to figure out how to save directy to the HardDrive... Hi there!

You're wrong. It's because of XP's (Lovely NTFS!) SelfGuarding. The Win-9x give access to ANY folder You want; XP - refuses... As for Vista - it is concerned about safety much more than both of them.
Open context menu of the Vista's folder or Drive You want to SHARE;
- select Properties;
- go to Security (I guess that's pretty correct translation) tab;
- press Change;
- select 'All' or 'EveryOne' (I don't remember the English version) from the Groups and Users;
- check Allow 'Full Access' on lower window;
- than OK - and here You go!

Solve : Windows Startup?

Answer»

When my Desktop Windows XP boots up, it pauses at a screen which asks me which one of two versions of XP to install. One of the versions, the default version, is corrupt and is not the one I wish to install. If I don't act fast enough or select the wrong version the boot up fails. I know which version is the one I want to select. What software file and how do I EDIT it to remove the unwanted version from the boot up QUESTION?

This a problem whenever the computer does an automatic boot or if my wife has to make the decision.

Thank you for any help you can give me on this annoying problem.Right-click My Computer/choose Properties/choose Advanced tab. Here you have the OPTION to choose the default OS you want to use and set the time to make the choice. The other option is to edit the Boot.ini file, which is hidden.

Solve : start up problems with XP?

Answer»

I have a Dell pc series 8300 running XP professional and have been running into problems with starting. I have read numerous posts on this site and have gotten lots of great info. I am still having the Dell SCREEN, then the XP screen, then the black followed by the blue message screen. The message states:"STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because baseojrj32 was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
Now I have tried to reboot the system. I got to the safe mode screen and tried each item with no luck. I tried my boot disk which did not solve anything either. Same blue screen message keeps popping up. Did the CMOS reset with the battery removal too. Still no luck. Any ideas? The info I have picked up from various posts and replies on this site has HELPED and I am hoping that someone can come up with someway to fix this before I throw the $%^#* thing out the WINDOW. I am really trying to avoid erasing everything as the wife will kill me if all our pictures are lost. Thanks in advance.Download information

Solve : Random Clicking then throws me off page!?

Answer»

Hello,

I was wondering whether someone would be able to help me. I will try and describe my problem as best as possible. Over the last few days when i have MS Outlook open (which i do most the time for my work emails) i have noticed that i often here a clicking noise coming (as if i am clicking on something) and then it throws me off the page i am writing on. I thought is was Outlook specific but i am beginning to think its not. Its quite frustrating becuase every time the click happens i have to reselct the page i was writing on. Its definately a noise that is coming out of my speakers rather that a noise coming from elements within the computer if that makes sense!

Does anybody know how i can resolve this?

Many thanks

... in fact it happens when i do other things aswell. I just when to open my pcitures folder and the CLICKS started happening again which threw me off writing this twice! That clicking sound is probably related to the interval you have set for Outlook to check for new mail.So what does that mean? How do i rectify it. I havent changed any settings and it never used to do it. It clicks alot and throws me off the page i am working on. Do you know what i need to do to sort this out? Many thanksYou said that its happening even if you are not using Outlook.

Then I'll go with some virus or spyware.
Have you scanned your system.Hello
Yes scanned system this morning with Norton internet security. Did a FULL system scan but its all clear. Not really sure what to do now. Can you tell us a little more? What do you mean by throwing you off the page? Does this happen only when your on the web? What browser are you using? IE?

Have you installed ANYTHING in the last week or so?

What version Windows?
You can also look up the sound in Control Panel Sounds and Multimedia to see what MAY be triggering it...tedious but effective.Hello. I use internet explorer. and windows xp. last week my norton security picked up this trojan trojan.brisv.a!inf to get rid of it i had to run a programme in safe mode. its cleared off my computer now but i guess the clicking has been since then. Its the same click that you get if you open a programme but this time it happens randomly. Maybe if i have outlook open it will click a few times or if i close a programme. Say for example i am writing a message on skype. when the clicking starts sounding the cursor leaves the page i am writing on and i have to click back in the box to keep writing. Does this make sense?Have you by chance tried a different mouse? It may sound silly but if your mouse is having problems it could be registering clicks even when you aren't touching it.Hello thanks for your help. I am using a laptop so have tried both the mouse on the laptop and an external mouse but its still happening. Not sure what to do next.OK didn't know that you were using a laptop. Still it may be a problem with the controls on the laptop.

I know you plugged in an external mouse but if your laptop is not set up to disable the touch pad and buttons when an USB device is active then it could still be registering the clicks if there a problem with the controls on the laptop.

If you are using Windows XP can you go to "Control Panel" then "Mouse" and under the "Device Select" tab see if you have a box that says something like this

"Disable Touch Pad / Stick when USB pointing device is present"

If you have that and there isn't a check in the box can you click on it and then try the external mouse.

This may not be the solution to the problem but it won't hurt to try. Hello thanks for that advice. I have disabled completely my touch pad so it doesnt work at all. I am now using an external mouse. I got all excited thinking surely this would solve it but unfortunately it hasnt. I am wondering though whether it is in fact related to my outlook. When i send an email it starts doing the clicking and i just pressed send/receive button and it did the send and receive process fine and then afterwards did the clicking... Closing outlook it does it as well. Of course i leave it open and running in the back ground when i am on other prgrams so when it does the send/receive in the background it then starts clicking and throws me off what ever page i am working on at the time. Let me try opening a different program. Ok i have opened and closed a few programs and its not doing it. Im sorry if i have been giving you the wrong impressions. I think it must just be outlook specific.

Solve : Drive C files there, but not visible?

Answer»

I have a computer game I recently re installed on my new computer. I use alot of downloads from gaming sites and use 7zip to extract them into the game. However now with the new install when I try to extract a FILE into the game it does not appear to show in the games file on drive c, some do appear after I extract them but when I run the game they are not on the game menu, nor in the game at all. I DECIDED to see if simply DRAGGING the file into the game folder would work, this makes all the file names show. However once I drag them into the folder it asks me if I want to replace the current install of the file. I am confused because if the files are already in the game, then how come they neither show up in drive c, the game menu, nor the game itself. Any suggestions?

ThanksPerhaps a mention of what game this is would help.

Also, what Operating SYSTEM?

Can you also give us the link for these downloads so we can see if they came with specific instructions.I actually just figured it out, It was a nested folder problem.

Thanks Alot

Solve : I lost my sound i dont know what to do!?

Answer»

i know very Little about COMPUTERS so I'm going to just tell you everything i know

the facts
the SET up: i have never changed the sound card i used the one that came with the computer a dell dimension 9100. i have never unplugged the speakers. i bought some head phones and occasionally plugged those in

what happened: i had plugged in the head phones and everything was working fine then when i unplugged my headphones my sound had disappeared. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with the fact that i have to SAFELY remove hardware but i don't know

the symptoms: now the sound is gone but my speakers are still emitting something when i cranked the volume up to max i found that it would emit some staticy feedback (I'm not sure if that's the technical term but that's what Ive come to call it) this static plays whenever sound should be playing or when things in the window move (for example if i min or max a window or if i scroll around the screen.)
also when i plugged in my headphones after the problem the same static came from the head phones.

its not the first time: this happened to me last year but the issue (as far as i know) magically resolved itself. i was playing left 4 dead and had left the menu sitting there for a while and when i move the mouse over the buttons the buttons made a "click" noise. i don't know why it happend

what i think it isn't
i had gone through most of windows trouble shooter and found out the following

my volume is proprely adjusted

there are no hardware conflicts (since I'm not familiar with any of the terms that appeared under the audio device list it is a possibility that it might be the issue but i didn't SEE any exclamations or X's so I'm guessing that's not the problem)

everything is plugged in.

when the trouble shooter RECOMMENDED changing the BIOS i decided that i was not an advanced enough user and i didn't want to risk further screwing my computer.

so what i need to know is this
how can i restore my sound back to normal. Do you plug your headphones into a speaker or the computer itself?

Never, ever, plug something into something else if the computer and/or speakers are on...unless you're plugging in a USB cable...and that, too, can create ESD (Electrostatic discharge), which is what I think happened in this case.

You probably damaged your sound card.

If you have another sound card available...test it on this computer. Otherwise...you're just grasping at straws...since this does not appear to be a driver-related issue. Just a simple case of ESD.

Solve : Cannot upgrade from XP to Vista Ultimate?

Answer»

A friend of mine gave me a cd with vista ultimate on it. I think it was the cracked version. I needed to upgrade my BIOS to install it. I ran the installer and it did everything it needed to (COPY windows, set up, expand files, install features, complete)
At about 60% of completing the upgrade the installer restarted windows and then the blue screen of death came up. It said it was a hardware failure i think. The installer then took over and restored XP. thank god.
So i tried it aobut 2 more times and it did the same thing again.

I previously downloaded and ran the windows vista upgrade advisor and it said everything on my computer was FINE. even the installer said everything was ok, but it was sketchy about some basic programs. no PROBLEM there.

What seems to be the problem?

I have updated to all of windows security updates as well as my bios to A08.

Computer information

Dell XPS M1210
Genuine Intel CPU
T2300 @ 1.66GHz
1Gb ram
Windows XP

The CD i have i know is not the authentic version of INSTALLING vista, but it works really well. Everything on there is legit and my friend used it a couple days ago and it worked fine.
The problem is that you are not using a Microsoft CD.

When you get one I am sure it will load fine.

i dont think that is the real problem....We don't assist with cracked versions or Warez here...hope you understand.
But as stated above it PROBABLY IS your issue whether you believe it or not...

Solve : secondary monitor problem?

Answer»

Hi!!
I had my comp. connected to my tv and enjoyed it tremendously!!
Recently I had to send my computer out to have a virus removed. When I got it back I connected it again and nothing worked as before. I went into display settings thinking I had to configure them again...but now there is only one monitor SHOWING. I don't seem to have an option to ENABLE my secondary monitor. It is not showing a #1 and #2 as before. I don't know how to fix this? MAYBE more things were removed from my computer than I anticipated. I don't believe any hardware was removed.

Can anybody help?
I sure appreciate it!!
Thanks!!Try re-installing your video drivers first...
But i WOULD open the case to see what's missing as well.
Not to SAY you got shafted but it's happened before...

Solve : Drive access?

Answer»

I was advised (by Reno) to check registry for the following ENTRIES :

check the following registry key "HKCR\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer"
make sure the value of NoDrives and NoViewOnDrive is 0.

On checking , I find that the value of NoDrive is "0000 02 FE FF 03 by"

and there is no entry as "NoViewOnDrive"

Thnks

Wait a sec, what's the question?sorry for the typo, it should be HKCU, not HKCR
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\nodrives

the key type should be REG_DWORD:
consisting of 4byte, each byte from the right hide a specific drive depending on which bit is on:

byte 1: drive A-H (bit 1 to bit 8 )
byte 2: drive I-P (bit 9 to bit 16)
and so on for byte 3 and byte 4.

can you access the drive by typing the drive name in windows explorer? example d:\First - I have been thanking all concerned. But I find "Thanked" as 0

Second - For Reno - Registry entry details are as under :

0000 02 FE FF 03 by (or something close to it- that b looks
like 1 and o with two dots on top)

Third - For Carbon Dudeoxide

The problem is I have (apart from floppy and CD drive) a Harddisk (partioned in to three i.e. C:, E: and F:) , an external HDD (partitoned in to three G: H: I:) and a digital storage with a memory card slot (presently no card) ( The Drive LETTER assigned to Memory card is J: and the other storage device is K:).

I am unable to see the letters J: and K: in my windows explorer.

This was the question.

Fourth : To All (specially Reno) : To the question whether I can access the drives through explorer - I checked and YES. I CAN.

I can access by typing the drive letter in the windows explorer address bar.

Also I can access the drive thorugh Ctrl panel->Adm tools->Computer managerment->Diskmanagement.

I think I will access the said disks through Wexplorer. Thank you once again (Though not urgent, any solution to the problem is welcome.).

if the value is "0000 02 FE FF 03 ïy", then my guess is the key type is REG_SZ. (i dont know why this key exist)
the valid key type for NO_DRIVES is REG_DWORD eg. 0x02FEFF03 (265859)
and default value is 0 (show all drives)

decrypting the value from right to left:
key value=0x02FEFF03
result : show drive C until H, show drive Q, show drive Y, and hide the rest.

if you can access the drive through windows explorer and cmd prompt, then the reg value is non-zero.
to make sure it is 0 with the correct data type, type this line in command prompt:
before doing this, backup your registry first
Code: [Select]echo y|reg add "HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer" /v NoDrives /t REG_DWORD /d 0
the result of the command should be like this:
Value NoDrives exists, overwrite(Y/N)?
The OPERATION completed successfully

restart the computer for the effect to take change. then check again to make sure the value stay zero, if it doesn't ......... (that's another story)Holey Carp...

Solve : Microsoft Word 07' Windows to Mac Pages compatibility??

Answer»

(Might want to skip to the small paragraph a BIT down, I blather)

In spanish we are doing partnered projects. I have a PC at home (Using it now =D) that i just used to CREATE a menu, and ran it of our ages-old INK printer. I know, not laser 0.o. We were OUT of red and LOW on black... turned out awful.

My partner has a mac. I cannot take this PC to school because... Well... I'm PARANOID someone will just pick it up and walk off with it, plus I don't like having things that my classmates don't have (I don't even like having my iPod out, not a "Rich" school, but it did distribute 4-500 MacBooks to highschoolers.)

Anyways -- These School-issued Mac's don't have Microsoft WORD on them. The Teachers/Faculty/Administrator's Mac's do, but I am not going to be able to use one of those for 10 minutes to print this.

So what is a supported save FORMAT that I can save VIA Microsoft Word 07' and open in Pages for OSX Leopard?

Motherboard box contains manual, driver disk, back plate, 2 SATA and 1 PATA cables, and the board.

You should have got all of these, if not your "friend" is ripping you off. The board costs around 42 US dollars by the way.

I have searched for downloadable drivers without SUCCESS. If your friend bought the board from Newegg, it might be possible to request a driver disk from them if you have the receipt for the purchase. or you could email support at Jetway.

Solve : no icons on desktop?

Answer»

help.... my desktop is completely blank, all i have is my display background, and i have no icons. i ran my virus scanner (avg free) and cleared out 2 Trojans that had registry keys attached with them, but that turned out not to be the problem. I think it could be another virus that avg didn't catch but i'm not too sure that is the case. Also i was watching a movie online which could be the problem... because when i was watching it, the problem started. I can access my icons and the start menu only when i change accounts, but it only lasts for about 30 SECONDS. I cannot right click on my desktop with this problem but other than that everything else seems to be working. I have tried system restore but that did not work, I know i am being very vague, I'm sorry, Please if you have any questions, post here and i will reply ASAP. thank you (:

What icons did you have on your desktop before?
Can you add new icons there now?

Have you gone into your Control Panel, and display options where you can add system default icons? - Try adding these.i just had programs like Steam, counter-strike 1.6, ventrilo, avg free, AIM and basic programs like this, I can STILL look at my icons and everything else through CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I also cannot add new icons. Whoa, this is weird when i opened my control panel all of my icons and taskbar came back!?! but they KEEP disappearing and coming back it stays for about 15 seconds then leaves for 5 seconds. I just received an error saying: "Service Pack 3 Setup Error" "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer" This was an update for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929). OK another weird thing just happened i did a virus scan with the SUPERanti spyware thing on your infections TAB, and when it was finished i was deleting the virus's and i received a fatal system error. Oh and when i opened my control panel and clicked on the display icon nothing appeared to be there regarding system default icons.YES, my computer problem is fixed the super anti-spyware program i FOUND on your infections tab found the virus i am sorry for posting in the wrong section i did not know it was a virus. Solve : NTLDR problems?

Answer»

So everytime I start my computer I get a message NTLDR missing, now ive googled this alot, and come across alot of advice, most of the solutions involve a windows CD. Im useing windows xp home, and have no windows cd.

Even with all usb ports unpluged, all disks and cds out I still get the message.
I was able to boot and access my harddrive without any problem useing a live knoppix cd, which I would GUESS means the harddrive is functioning properly.

I read about too many files on the root in windows causeing it to mess up the partition or something, this problem has happened about 5 times, each time requireing me to reinstall XP from a rescue partition on my drive. each even is about 4 or 5 months apart, so Im thinking that is the problem but I dont know, is there any advice or solutions anyone can give me out there?Everyone needs a Windows CD...this would be the first place to start.

NOTE: You can borrow one as long as it is a Microsoft XP CD and not an OEM ( HP, Compaq, Acer etc.) as long as the version and Service Packs installed match...

In other words if you are running XP Pro with SP2 installed then that is the CD you need to facilitate repairs...Coldlogic - Welcome to the CH forums.

If you can access your hard drive search for NTLDR, there may be a copy of it lurking in other folders. The size should be 250,048 bytes. If found copy it to the root of C: and reboot.

Quote

I read about too many files on the root in windows causeing it to mess up the partition
Well, yes, maybe. I believe that file fragmentation is the main cause of NTLDR going awol, to protect its integrity it is moved to a secondary (mirror) Master File Table which is not searched during the boot sequence. IMHO maintenance of the system partition is crucial in avoiding such error conditions. (CCleaner, Defrag etc).

Good luck.thanks for the replies! appretiated, I have no access to an XP disc, I really dont know anyone with one that I can get ahold of anytime soon,

also I did a search for the ntldr file, which i couldnt find, however i did notice I accually had a copy on my root drive c:

is there a common place a backup of this file would be stored?Quote
also I did a search for the ntldr file, which i couldnt find, however i did notice I accually had a copy on my root drive c:

Yep, that's normal, NTLDR is not missing, it's just not in the file table which is searched during boot.

Please supply some details of your hardware, in particular do you have a floppy diskette drive, access to a pc running XP?

i have a floppy drive in both my computers, and one of them has a working version of xp running on it.That's good news. On the working pc copy the files NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI to a clean floppy. Put the floppy in the non-working pc and boot from it. Note that you might have to change your boot sequence in bios to boot from the floppy first.

If my memory serves me right the files on the floppy will be used to boot your pc and the copy of Windows on your hard drive will be loaded. After loading Windows you can copy NTLDR from the floppy to the root of C:, remove the floppy and reboot.

I then suggest that you immediately do some maintenance on your system partition (C:) such as DiskCleanup (altho' I prefer CCleaner) and certainly Defrag and get into some regular routine of maintaining integrity on the system partition.

Hope this is helpful, please post back with your results.

Thanks.ok heres what i did, I copied those 3 files from my working xp computer, put them onto the root drive c: replaceing the original files, the result was different, i didnt get the NTLDR missing message, but the pc froze at the same spot with no message this time. I then rebooted it and it came up with the original message NTLDR missing.

I made backups of all of the files I replaced, when i changed the boot.ini back to the original the exact same THING happened, it froze up the first boot, then on the second it came up with the missing NTLDR message. I checked and the boot.ini is not being altered in anyway between the two boots.

Why did you copy the three files to the root of C:? That's not what was asked of you, my post says Quote

Try booting from the floppy disk, go no further, and please let US know what happens.

I can assure you that booting from the floppy does work, I've used this METHOD countless numbers of times, but you must follow the procedure, going off on a tangent might cause mayhem.

Solve : SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL?

Yesterday I got a prompt of an update of the WINDOWS Live Messenger. Without suspecting anything, I have the update installed and now I got the error message "SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL" when I tried to log in.

I uninstalled Windows Live Messenger and the error is gone. But when I reinstall it, it comes again.

What is the problem and how can I fix this?

I have ran CCleaner and a virus scan.

I'm running Win XP SP2.

Thanks. What version of Windows Live Messenger are you trying?I manage to find the installer of the previous version on the NET and now I got it WORKING again. So I guess there are some issue with the latest version?

The one I'm running at the moment, and all the while, is Version 8.1 (Build 8.1.0178.00), and the latest version I was prompted to upgrade to is Version 9 if not mistaken.MSN Messenger 9, as I recall, is still in Beta?

I don't know. Still using MSN 7.5 myself.

That was what I knew. But that's the one that you download from their website which doesn't mention the version, and it's also the same version that it prompts you to upgrade to from the current running Live Messenger.

I thought if it's still in beta testing then it's not suppose to be the official download and it should not automatically prompt you to upgrade?Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 14, 2009, 12:20:51 PM

Solve : Windows XP x64 computer keeps restarting! RAM???

Answer»

Hey all.

Recently I have been having a lot of trouble with the computer randomly restarting. This tends to happen only when I am playing 3D games (Warhammer Online). Sometimes I get a BSOD, sometimes I do not. As for the exact error that the BSOD shows, it changes. I have had some that mentioned dxg.sys, some with the error 0x000000FC (may have miscounted 0's on that).

After MANY, many reinstalls and driver updates, I began swapping RAM around.

First, a little back story behind my weird RAM issues. My Mobo supports DDR2-800 RAM but will only read my RAM as DDR2-667. I put my girlfriends RAM in and it reads it as DDR2-800!

I took 1 stick out and it still does it. Swapped it out with the other and the same thing. I swapped both of my sticks with my girlfriend's RAM and I've had more problems... Sometimes windows will not boot and say there are missing files, sometimes Windows will boot and tell me registration keys (for antivirus) are invalid, etc. I was able to boot it up once by slowing her RAM down.

-----------------------------------------------

Does this sound like a Mobo issue? It reads my RAM as slower than it is, and won't work properly with RAM it does read properly.

Could it be a PSU issue? I've had the computer for 2 years and it's only recently started doing this... however the RAM has always been showing as DDR2-667, and it also shows as DDR2-667 on my girlfriend's computer and in my brother's computer.

If this only happens at specific times it may be a power issue - I have always tested my machines by leaving them in the BIOS to see if they restart (this eliminates software issues).

In your case though it may only happen at certain times i.e. when the system is under extreme power demands.

Try running as much software as your system can handle to see if anything happens.
What is wattage is your PSU anyway? - min of 450w is required here. It's a 550W PSU. I left the computer on overnight and had no restarting. This all seems to have started when I installed Windows XP Pro x64 instead of Windows XP Home. Does that require more power from the PSU? I'm thinking about just going back to 32-bit windows if that's the problem =/

I might also add that I have 3 DVD drives and a floppy drive hooked up. Also have a wireless card I don't use. Would unplugging them help us narrow down a power issue?Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump folder.

Google [ Compaq Monitor FS740 Support ]

Enter your Monitor name and number Support ?

http://www.google.com/

I cant find any books on the moniter, and i am unsure of the model of the moniter. it only says DIAMOND View. Many Monitor Brightness Knobs have two adjustments. Turn right or left to set Brightness. Push the KNOB in to turn on and off.

Google [ Diamond View Monitors ]I haven't seen a knob on monitors since CRT displays. Heh. They are most likely buttons.

Are there no numbers anywhere on the monitor?

It sounds like one of your buttons is pressed down.
Try forcefully pressing all the buttons on your monitor to 'unstick' them.None of these as worked, there are 4 buttons they all click so it seems they cant be STUCK down, but when it goes into the menu it automatically presses ok and drags the brightness up, so the enter button and accros button might be pressed down insideWell, with a monitor, there really isn't much you could do.

If you cannot release the buttons (assuming they are stuck), you will need a new monitor. Fun to read about knobs

Solve : The System cannot log you on now because the domain *** is not available?

Answer»

A friends laptop, used at home, she GOT it from her office where *** was the domain.
She WUD use it at home, and login using her user name and password and with the domain set as ****

But now for some reason i do not know, it says:

The System cannot log you on now because the domain *** is not available

I do have the User name and Password.

Any clues .. also, is it related to cached logons or SOMETHING. Additionally how can i disable the network logon dialogThe machine is a member of a domain and this login can't be by-passed. The cached login information can be set to not be SAVED forcing the machine to authentcate to the domain everytime you login. This is what you have with this machine.

If you know the LOCAL account information on the machine you can login using one of those accounts. But you will not have access to the network or any of the data.

Solve : XP Startup Issue, or lack of.....?

Answer»

Hi Folks,

Would really appreciate any advise you can GIVE on this:

RUNNING XP on a VAIO, it froze when installing service pack 3. Since then, the laptop will not complete start up.

The first screen displays the Window XP icon on a black background, with the blue loading icon.

The next screen displays the Window XP icon, blue background and mouse icon appears. The touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

CTR+ALT+DEL has no affect.

Running safe mode, control line fill the page, and then the blue background and mouse icon appears, although in a reduced window. Again, the touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

Running last know GOOD configuration, ending up with the Window XP icon, blue background and mouse icon appears. The touchpad has control of the cursor, but start up does not continue.

The laptop has apparently got the boot information so it did not COME with any boot CD’s.

So at the moment, the laptop is just an expensive paperweight!

Thanks for reading.

Solve : Blue Screen when unplug USB HDD?

Answer»

BSoD when I unplug my Portable USB HDD
I have a SP3 comp
everything works perfectly, including my portable HDD, until recently I UNPLUGGED it while it was installing an update, and i got a blue screen. funny, but normal usb drives dont do anything when i hot swap it

same issue as(even same error msg)
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Desktops/Q_24164678.html

except my HDD is portable IDE, and not SATA
i decided to hotswap it, and after a period of extended use(works fine if u just plug it in and unplug it within a few mins), BSoD comes up.

error screen is attached

Quote

until recently I unplugged it while it was installing an update,

Has that update successfully installed at another TIME?

It is generally better to cancel the update than unplug hardware in the midst of one.well
the problem is, that update never properly installed
everytime i install it it comes up with an error with some sort, and it tries to install the next time i shut down the comp
i suspect it's the same update all this time
and i unplugged the drive when windows had logged me off, was installing the update and about to shut down...

have i DONE some kind of taboo? You haven't done anything most of us haven't done at one time or another.

If you have the original operating system disk, see if you can boot the computer from it, and perform a repair. The repair should correct problems in Windows WITHOUT erasing any existing data. You have to follow instructions carefully, though.

Let us see if we can find a "walkthrough" for you.

The instructions HERE are pretty easy to follow. The deal is that you don't want to use the Repair Console to repair Windows -- at the correct point, you press the Enter key, and Windows will go on to launch the repair sequence.

Once you get Windows working again, you can try installing updates as necessary.

If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask.use disk heal software & clean all errors on your hard drive`surm

windows still boots fine, just when i plug my usb HDD in, and unplug it, the blue screen comes up

so u guys suggest, i fish out my windows disk, and perform a repair?

i have SP3, but the installation CD is on SP2, will that affect it?

i have PQ magic 8, will that be enough as a HDD heal software?

and urm that update happens to be a IE7 update that never seems to install due to "files from the package are incompatible with the files on ur system" for some reasonLemme think about that, a bit...Before you resort to a Repair Install try running chkdsk /f on the external first...i have 3 drives on my external

how would i do that?

do i type:

Run --> chkdsk F:/ /f?

and repeat for G:/ and H:/ [these r the drive letters for them btw...]?

Solve : Copying files in Recovery Console?

Answer»

I recently ran into a log on/log off loop on my computer, and through some research realized my userinit.exe file had been deleted via a virus.

I tried to load the last good configuration - no luck. I tried to boot in safe mode; again, no luck. I found this article (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-XP-Logs-Then-Immediately-Logs-Off-t15771.html) and decided to try the Recovery Console.

I ran chkdsk in the Recovery Console and it told me it had found and fixed errors, but userinit.exe is still missing from the c:\windows\system32 directory, and my computer still won't start. I have a copy of userinit.exe on a USB drive, but the AllowRemovableMedia parameter is SET to FALSE and I can't figure out how to change it. The 'set' command tells me I don't have access.

This article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310497/) looks like it could solve my problem, except I can't access the Windows GUI so I'm not SURE how to enable the mentioned group policy. The article says exactly what registry entry needs to be changed, but I don't know how to edit the registry from the Recovery Console.

I also considered using the "fixboot" command, but I'm not sure if that would solve my problem, and it seems like it might mess me up more.

My job relies on this computer, and I would lose a ton of important stuff if I had to re-install Windows. Can anyone help me? My system is running Windows XP Pro."the AllowRemovableMedia parameter is set to FALSE and I can't figure out how to change it." If this is in the BIOS then using the keyboard should make it able for you to change the parameter. Enter, up-down,TAB, whatever works.

The other thing I'd do is get that drive slaved to another computer and get all your "stuff" off. While it's disconnected you could copy the userinit.exe from the working computer to the system32 folder on your slaved one. I've used this TECHNIQUE before to fix this kind of problem.

Good luck.

Alan <>< The AllowRemovableMedia parameter is a part of the recovery console, not BIOS.

I thought of the slaving technique but I'm not very good at working with the computer HARDWARE so I'd like to leave that as a last resort.

Any other ideas?try this

Solve : Computer keeps restarting?

I don't have enough hands-on experience with the different CPU models to say. Someone else will have to advise unless this link helps: Application InstructionsIf the heatsink is not seated properly all these issues will occur...
Read the MBoard manuf. manual on getting it seated properly.OK, i got the LITTLE clamps to work and the cpu is now properly attatched, but i keep getting the same continuous restarting as before.Did you clik dahlarbear's link above and read up on applying Thermal Paste properly ? ?i dont have any thermal paste. Should i get some?Did you reapply the thermal paste? Did you remove the old stuff first?

Does the fan on top of the heatsink spin? Any wires in the way?

Edit- Yes go buy new thermal paste. Remove the old stuff first.

the fan on the cpu does spin, there are no wires in the way.

but ive never had thermal paste on before nor do i have any currently. Is this paste needed?ok, i will go get some paste tommorow.

Thanks for all of the advise given today, I am grateful for your help.

see you tommorowok, I applied new thermal paste (yes i took off the old stuff first, i guess it came with it) following the instructions posted above, I still get the same error message on startup and the system still restartsany suggestions on what is wrong??0. Temperature. Are the "CPU Temperature Alert(s)" gone?

1. Data File Backup. If your "data" is important to you, now would be a good time to back it up. Configure your hard drive to a working computer either as an internal slave or an external hard drive (USB enclosure). Slave Drive Tutorial

2. WINDOWS XP CD. You should start looking for a Windows XP Install CD. It should be same version you're running, Home Edition or Professional; preferably at the same service pack level (or greater?). You're probably going to NEED a "repair" installation of the operating system. I don't know if you need your "Product Key" for that.

3. Hard Disk Drive. Since your problem started when you "pounded" the desk, check the integrity of your hard drive (file systems and disk surface) before doing either a "repair" or new installation of the operating system. The "chkdsk /p" and "chkdsk /r" commands of Windows XP "Recovery Console" may be used to check the integrity of the file system and the disk surface respectively. The web site of the hard drive manufacturer also provides bootable diagnostic software to verify the integrity of their hard drive(s). Just don't run any "destructive" tests.

4. Recovery Console. May be accessed from:
o Windows XP Setup Disks (Set of six floppy disks)
o Windows XP Install CD
o See earlier post by "JJ 3000" in this thread for download at: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
i tried jj 3000's link, but that didnt do anything.

I sent my computer off to a repair specialist, hopefully they will fix the issue.I'm afraid they will simply "reinstall" the operating system... I wonder if they'll be able to recover the product key? --dahlarbearok, repairman was too busy so he didnt take my computer.

Is the only available option left to get a windows cd and try repair?

Im using Microsoft Windows V5.1 SP3

would it matter if i just went out and bought a new cd??That recovery console disk that you downloaded should have fixed any issues with XP if the operating system was the CULPRIT. I think you have a hardware problem.

Quote from: Chefbrian on March 10, 2009, 05:11:42 PM

I followed the instructions on the site JJ 3000 suggested, but i still get the same fatal system error as mentioned in my original post.

Do you still get the CPU overheating error?

Regarding spaces, I was thinking about the lack of a delims block, but the tokens=* fixed that. Plus the quotes of course.

Without wanting to seem vain, I did already post a working example which answers the OP's request, (to copy a file to a folder and automatically name the copy with the elements of its previous path). Billrich STILL hasn't done that.

And the OP wants to copy the file to a folder and give it a new name, not rename it in place. (read the original post).

isn't two Do...Loops Enough?

regardless of which, I'm not particularly good with the new command line extensions; I stopped using batch programming extensively before I switched from windows 3.1, so I haven't really researched all the new stuff that can be done with it. I can use For quite well for it's original specs, but I haven't had time to sufficiently learn the new nuances added with CMD.

I have however learned not to say stuff is impossible in batch, because the MOMENT I say that, and provide a VBScript solution Dias has a much shorter Batch program that does the same thing ... and even with VBScript I keep trying to use left$ Right$ Mid$ etc, when in fact VBScript has no notion of any type other then variant, and thus there is no $ suffix on any string manipulation functions. I still type them instinctively so I have to always check over my VBScript to make sure that I didn't let some money sneak in

The fact of the matter is- this thread was solved when Dias posted his batch. your post could only suffice to confuse the OP since- as explained - it merely illustrated the REN command.
