Solve : How to disable PS/2 mouse check on start up?

Answer»

I recently replaced my PS/2 mouse with a USB one, but each time I start up the comp, an error appears at the POST stage saying 'PS2 mouse not found. Press F1 to Resume'. I looked in BIOS and there's no option to disable the PS/2 mouse (and I've checked several times). In Device Manager, there is no PS/2 device listed, I disabled the two Human Interface Devices that didn't have USB beside them, to no luck.

I'm using Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 processor, AMERICAN Microsystems MIS MS7191 motherboard. Is your computer STILL able to function normally despite the error message? I checked your motherboard manual:
http://hostfile.org/E7191v1.2.pdf and was not able to find any details on the error.

You can always get a USB to PS/2 adapter for cheap on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812196223I wonder if you NEED to access the BIOS settings and disable "Resume by PS/2 Keyboard" and "Resume by PS/2 Mouse". I don't know whether that would resolve this; it's just a thought. See page 3-16 of the manual. Thanks for the replies.

I thoroughly checked every option on BIOS and didn't see any mention of PS/2 anything, on Peripherals or any other menu option. I can't access the manual link posted above, it says there's an error on the file, so I can't check the pages you mention unfortunately, I looked in Google for another version of it but couldn't find one either. What BIOS ver. and revision # do you have ? ?Quote from: Dalta on December 06, 2011, 12:15:53 PM

I looked in Google for another version of it but couldn't find one either.
Here it is, straight from the MSI site:
http://us.msi.com/product/mb/RS482M4-FD--ILD--IL--L.html#/?div=ManualThanks for the link.

The BIOS is American Megatrends Version 080012.

Edit: I found the 'Resume by PS/2 Mouse' but it was already disabled.

2nd Edit: I found an option in BIOS under the 'Standard CMOS features menu' called 'Halt On'. I changed it from 'All but keyboard' to 'No Errors', but it seems by selecting No Errors, I won't get any warning if an error occurs on STARTUP. This doesn't seem ideal, is there any balance I could reach here?

Solve : Win XP auto log off from welcome screen?

Answer»

Basically, I can't log into my computer. It starts up fine to welcome screen, and when I click on my user name it acts like it is going to log in then it flashes my desktop background and logs me right BACK out. When I try to start in safe mode it flashes a blue screen of death and restarts. This problem showed up after getting a trojan horse and cleaning it out. I don't recall the name of it. THANK you guys for any and all helpCan you do a repair INSTALL with your windows XP setup DISC?
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htmMy computer didn't come with any Windows install or setup discs. It's an HP laptop. Download this: http://www.pcdisktools.com/download/PCRegedit.iso and burn it to CD. Then boot your comp with it in the drive. Make sure the BIOS has boot from CD first. Google BIOS change boot order for help on this.

After you're in, navagate to the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look for the userinit key. It should say: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, If it doesn't, then change it to that.

Another possibility is a missing userinit.exe file. You can find info on this here: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/1140791.htmHey Linux, I'll try that when I get home tonight. Thanks for your help!I would strongly recommend that if you are going to advise on registry changes at least give solid instructions on how to do a proper backup in case anything goes South...

Just a thought...

Any ideas? What version of DirectX are you trying to install? Where was the installer obtained from?

Was there ANOTHER version of DirectX on the computer before? Was it removed? How was it removed?

Have you run a registry cleaner recently or manually removed any DirectX entries from the registry?Trying to update 9.0c using MICROSOFT installer. No other version on computer.Have not run registry cleaner or manually removed any directx entries from registry.I am not any sort of computer whiz, though I have some ideas you could try...if you are running DirectX 9.0 as of now, go to the console, and type in "regedit".
Make sure that in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->DirectX the version is the value of "4.09.00.0904" and the InstalledVersion is "0000000900000000"
Do not do this if you do not have DirectX 9.0. (It sounds like you do but you can never be to sure)
If the values are different, copy down the original values for future reference and change them only then. I would also suggest you re-download xactengine3_0.dll as the file could be corrupted. I would theorize that all your other errors are because of the failure of xactengine3_0.dll. I went and found the dll for you. It is attached to this post. These are just some ideas so if anyone tells you to ignore me (which they might ) Take their advice, I really don't have a great idea of what I'm talking about.

To me this sounds about right, although it would be nice to format your post to make it a bit easier to follow

Step 1.
Confirm your Video Card can support Direct X 9.0c in the first place!

Step 2.
Confirm you have Administrator privileges. Start > Run > control nusrmgr.cpl > ok

Step 3.
Confirm the presently installed Direct X version. Start > Run > dxdiag > ok (System tab)

Step 4.
Copy the following (inside quote box) as TempDX.REG to Notepad > Save As... > Save as Type > All Files (ideally save to Desktop)
Quote
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX]
"InstalledVersion"=hex:00,00,00,09,00,00,00,00
"Version"="0.00.00.0000"

Step 5.
Locate the TempDX.REG, that you just saved. Right click > Select Merge > yes/ok
If it merged successfully you can now just delete this TempDX.REG file

Step 6.
Download and install the latest Direct X version. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8109

Step 7.
Again confirm the presently installed Direct X version. Start > Run > dxdiag > ok (System tab)

Step 8.
There is no step 8, its all done Quote from: kimsland on December 02, 2011, 09:23:35 PM

If the Video Card doesn't support DX9 in hardware, DirectX will emulate missing features. It will not prevent installation of DirectX.

Well I didn't say it wouldn't install, anyway I just continued whatever the result.
It is important anyway, because some games may ask for Direct X 9.0c as Minimum, but anyway whatever.

I'm not overly happy with extracting the Direct X Setup Cabs then renaming or editing them.

Does this help?0xc000001d = Illegal Instruction

The dll file is corrupted. redownload DirectX; preferably, use the offlike installer.

I can say with some certainty that the DLL is corrupted, because LoadLibrary() and it's Ex Version will load a DLL, and then call that DLL's dllmain() export. In this case the header of the file is intact but the file is corrupted so calling the address of dllmain() causes an illegal instruction.

I will download Directx again. It will take a while as I only have a dial up connection.I downloaded Directx again but I still get the same error message

Solve : Can't figure out the problem ??

When I am starting my computer, after the booting process ,on the desktop two windows of notepad is automatically genarating and the note pad says "[.ShellClassInfo]
[emailprotected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787 ".....both of the note pads says the same thing
No...idea what is the problem??.....This is caused by a CORRUPT desktop.ini file in one or more startup or start menu folder(s). You need to edit or DELETE them. If you go to each Notepad in turn and try "Save as",,, you will see which folders you need to DEAL with.

Quote from: Microsoft Help And Support

Notepad Starts With "[.ShellClassInfo] [emailprotected]%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21787" When You Start Your Computer

You can either download a wizard to fix it for you, or read step-by-step instructions, at this page:

(The wizard may only fix one of them, but the manual method should get the other one.)

If you have one or more Notepads open with those files, close them before TRYING to fix!

When you start the computer, Notepad starts and one or more text documents that contain the following lines appears on the Windows desktop:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[emailprotected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:

(1)

A Desktop.ini file exists in one or more of the following folders, where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:
drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

-AND-

(2) The Desktop.ini file contains the following lines:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[emailprotected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Solve : Blinking Cursor?

Answer»

My girlfriends computer is showing a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of her LCD. the screen is completely black. From my expericence this usually means that the hard drive crashed. I checked all the cables to make sure everything was properly ATTACHED and all was fine. I managed to get into the BIOS and I can see the hard drive ( Seagate 500 gb Sata, 7200 Rpm Etc). Which i beleive means the Bios can see the hard drive but CANT get into it ( ? ). She tells me she uses her computer almost everyday and turns it on and off on a regular basis. Again from my experiences this can cause the hard drive to crash, right ?!!!. Is the hard drive toast ? or does this mean I am buying her a new hard drive for X-Mas. Any way any comments.

Isnt it best to set up the computer to go into stand by mode for those of us that like to always leave it on ??

Help Too early to assume it's the HDD failing...
Try booting into safemode by tapping F8 repeatedly on power up and before you see the Win logo...
Report what happens...If its a desktop with a dedicated video card, try cleaning the gold contacts along with your RAM modules. Alternately also if no changes, then use if there is an onboard graphics or use one stick of RAM as additional steps in checking your problem. It's not getting into Windows...this wouldn't be caused by the VID card.To Patio

I tried the F8 KEY and it still the same. I swapped out the key board with a known good one.....but more of the same.

What now ??You can get into Bios Setup?
But once you leave you get a blinking cursor?

Is that correct so far?

If so, the Ram, Video and most hardware may likely be ok.Quote from: kimsland on November 29, 2011, 12:55:46 AM

If so, the Ram, Video and most hardware may likely be ok.

That just means only the RAM, video, motherboard, CPU, and power supply are working well enough to get to that point. No other hardware is required to get beyond that point.

This most likely points to a hard drive issue. It's possible there's corruption on the hard drive, or the hard drive is failing to read (but still detectable in the BIOS).I took the Hard drive to work to the tech shop and they confirmed that it crashed. So looks like i am buying the girlfriend one for Christmas. Oh well.............

Solve : set background?

Answer»

how to set background to my computer ? Your desktop background (also called wallpaper) can be:

  • A digital picture from your personal collection
  • A picture that comes with Windows
  • A picture you have created yourself
  • A picture from the Internet

Changing your Desktop background in Windows XP can be done in Start > Control Panel > DISPLAY > Desktop (Or just right click on an unoccupied area of your Desktop and select Properties, then the Desktop tab.

You can also just right click on a picture found on the Web and select 'Set as Desktop Background...'

Wallpaper can look very NICE on your computer's Desktop, but there are some concerns:

  • If the picture is too big in size, (eg. a 10Meg picture)! This MAY slow down your Desktop from opening
  • If the picture has many DIFFERENT colors and lines, it may make it difficult to see your Desktop icons
  • Some web based PICTURES are actually copyrighted
  • Other users of your computer, may not like the new wallpaper
  • Some programs use a wallpaper changer, that can take computer resources away

Solve : Dual booting systems-> Need a little help with Setup?

Alright, so my hard drive on my old Toshiba satellite A40 finally died out. Since I PUT in a newer 40 GB hard drive, i want to install my OS correctly and make sure i only do it once. So here's what i wish to do. I want to install Windows Xp pro on only 20GB of the hard drive space. I wanna leave the other 18GB for another operating system however, i'm not 100 percent sure how to set up my partitions to do that. When installing windows XP would i simply TYPE 20GB when creating the partition? and the remainder of the partition would be formatted using the second OS? and would i have a menu bar like in Linux to choose which OS i need at boot up?Create 2 partitions when doing the initial XP install...
Then when installing the 2nd OS point it to the 2nd partition.
NOTE Let US know what OS that will be...
NOTE #2: You are gonna run out of room soon on both of those partitions...just sayin. And yes, if you create one partition you will be offered the option of assigning the remainder of the space to the second partition.

That's your version of Windows. I asked about Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer GO to Help - About Internet Explorer and see what version number it is.

Solve : Computers bizarre behavior?

Answer» HI all, I am posting as I am not to sure where I should post it.
I have a Hp pavillion a6402 uk. I had it a few months and have had a few probs with it I dont clearly understand.
I periodically suffer with the blue screen of death and these range from hard wear / driver or serious ERROR. Now the only way I seem to sure my problem is by reinstalling vista, which I have done a few times, it somes RUMS perfect but most messes up with in days/weeks, but the odd thing is my pc runs perfect with no probs on windows xp,, which I am more than happy to continue to use but I have a prob there are no drivers for some of my stuff, like ethernet/audio/video although pc runs ok. My pc was built soley for vista..
have had some one look at it and they were a paid engineer and they could not FIGURE out what was wrong If there are missing drivers for Vista then it wasn't built for Vista...
More details...Try to reinstall Windows Vista

Have you gone on the internet onto a site you have never have been on before
When you boot up is there a recovery thing that says F11
Did you install any software when you got your computerIgnore the above postGoogle your computer name and have a look at the specification. I just did it. You will notice that it is a VISTA computer. You should be able to run Windows XP but you will have to do a little digging. First off is to find what type of video driver is required yours is a Realtek ALC662. Head to the Realtek site and download a Windows XP driver for this to your hard drive. Now right CLICK on my computer and goto system properties - device manager that shows you the divers ( Sorry use a MAC at home so no reference doing it from memory ) Goto the Video section and if you see a ! in a yellow triangle the driver is no good so reinstall the driver using the one you have just downloaded.

Next you do the same with the network which again is RealTek

Hope that helps

ecloud, I can understand your question "What in the world is WHAT all about?" There was a post directly above mine (the one where i asked the question "What in the world is that all about? truenorth") that had absolutely nothing to do with your post. It appeared to be an attempt by the POSTER to get people to go to some kind of commercial site that i assume had nothing to do with your question. I didn't link to it because of concerns as to what it might do to my computer. I gather a MODERATOR MUST have removed it before you returned thus you only see my question and NOT the basis for it. truenorthI had the same thing and it was the hard drive, I changed the hard drive and and used recovery discs and it works fine.
Change the hard drive and see if a computer repair shop can recover your DATA, and from now on get an external hard drive and back all your stuff up

Solve : Taskbar Annoyance?

Answer»

The Windows Taskbar at the bottom of my screen shows all the Windows open. Now here is the annoying thing, when I click on something that is either at the end or near the end of the list of open Windows, it shifts when I click on it that I cannot open the Window. When it shift and then I tried to click on it, it shifts [no re-ordering of icons occurs, it just moves around as if it was never there]. Eventually, I just KEEP clicking and the Window I want pops up. Anyone ever ran across this issue, and know how to fix it?Try locking or unlocking the taskbar. Thanks for the hint, but I must still click "lock taskbar" before I can click on a task. How many windows are populating your taskbar? In XP, opening 5 will already combine all windows with quicklaunch icons enabled. Does locking taskbar keeps them from shifting as you say? I have my taskbar as two rows instead of one so make it more readable what's behind it. The taskbar has four on the top and say two on the bottom, the issue happens too often that the icons shift around.

Code: [Select]task1 task2 task3 task4
task5 task6
When try to click task 5 above, it would become
Code: [Select]task1 task2 task3 task4 task5
task6
Then try clicking on task5 above, it would become
Code: [Select]task1 task2 task3 task4
task5 task6
Now, how annoying is that? It's like trying to catch the bouncing red ball..... But when you gave the idea of lock taskbar, it does not bounce around, but yet, i must always click lock taskbar to avoid the bouncing each time ---- not good way to use Windows What version of windows you are running?QUOTE from: BC_Programmer on November 21, 2011, 05:59:02 AM

What version of windows you are running?

I'm using Windows XP SP3I don't use the option lock the taskbar. While I have quicklaunch icons pin on taskbar in XP, this is how I setup them when multiple windows are open.

They don't make any shifting or shuffling as you may be experiencing. PERHAPS you should use Group similar task on your Taskbar properties."Lose your Belly:.... Solve : Outlook Express folder - pasting in?

Answer»

I have a 30MB folder of e-mails called Work.dbx, and I want to move it to another computer so that OE will recognize it and I’ll have access to the messages. When I simply copy it to the place where OE's folders are stored (Local Settings / Application Data / IDENTITIES, ETC.), it doesn't SHOW up in OE. So I renamed Folders.dbx to let OE create a new Folders file, which it did. Now a newly created "Work(1).dbx" folder shows up, which is empty.

Any suggestions? (I have only one identity in OE, by the way.)See if you can re trace your steps and put it BACK the way it was.
There is a proper way to move stuff in OE. You have to do it from inside OE.

This also applies to other programs as well. Do not use the Windows EXPLORER to move components that are registered by programs. By default the internal directories are hidden. For a reason.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]Retracing my steps is, unfortunately, not an option here. Would be grateful if any one else has some practical advice to offer.I don't use OE much but i know there is an Import/Export function...did you try this ?PATIO: yes, I did. Unfortunately, when I try to use the import function, I get an error message that there are no messages at that location. I've tried copying the .dbx folder to various places and then browsing to them (as part of the import process), but it never seems to work.

When I boot up the installer does its thing at the bottom of the blue screen with the drivers and then enters the windows install page. At this stage the options are; 1 to continue install, 2 to repair, 3 to exit. This is the problem I can't choose any of them as the keyboard will not select either. I'm not sure if its the keyboard or the system. Ctl alt del won't WORK either. I have used a usb keyboard and an ps keyboard that i have. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! Where is this XP CD from ? ?

Solve : how to delete files and reg keys left after uninstalling "memeo instant backup"?

Answer»

i bought a seagate external hard drive for backup. at that time i installed seagate dashboard and memeo instant backup because it came with it. it caused my cpu to run at 100% continuously. after REALIZING that memeo was the culprit, i deleted it and seagate dashboard and everything started working right again. but when i tried to empty the recycle BIN, two folders would not delete;memeo (autobackup) and memeo (eWebControl365.dll, Profman.dll, and Redemption.dll). also in the registry, i found six keys for eWeb with nine subkeys.
my system seems to be running as good as ever, but i wonder about the files that are in the recycle bin and the entries in the registry. is there a way to get rid of them and are they spyware? most of the sites listed when i searched, WOT reported as disreputable sites.
thanks for any help you can give.Launch the AutoRuns program and disable anything related to Seagate, Memeo, eWeb, etc.

Run CCleaner and let it clean out obsolete entries in the registry.

If this situation is still not resolved, try opening regedit, select Edit-> Find, and manually remove entries for Seagate, Memeo, eWeb, etc. Just make SURE you don't accidentally delete any important registry keys. BACK up your registry first if you are unsure.i ran autoruns and didn't see anything that i recognized as having anything to do with seagate or memeo. i wasn't sure how to use ccleaner and was afraid i would remove something i needed so i didn't clean.
i did "regedit>edit>find" using "seagate" and "memeo" to find. it showed a few keys in the left pane and also files displayed in the right pane.
also, when scrolling through the registry, i saw other related keys (eWebControl365.dll, Profman, and Redemption). i'm assuming that each related key needs to be deleted in the left pane by right-clicking and choosing "delete" and that as long as i only delete something with the EXACT keywords, it will be safe to delete. is that a correct assumption?
thanks for the reply. i really appreciate it.Quote from: Doug Vitale on November 19, 2011, 07:55:56 AM

Solve : A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to re-start?

Answer»

Hi,
I am pretty much a noob with computers. I know that this topic has already started but each problem I read sounds a bit different to mine.
Basically, we had our PC taken away by a computer guy to load up all of the software it needed to get going (this PC had been packed away for a while and we brought it out when my SON moved out and TOOK the other PC with him!) He brought it back, connected it to the wi fi. It was all good when he started it but the next time we started it we were getting the "disk error" message. After you press ctl alt del, it starts up , takes a while though. Other messages then come up " Google Chrome- your preferences file is corrupt or invalid. Google Chrome is unable to recover your settings" and "Microdoft Windows: The SYSTEM has recovered from a serious error, A log of this error etc...."
The PC is working right now.
My son said it COULD be the hard drive, but how do I know ?
(BTW, computer guy is on a course so cannot be contacted)Here is the best advice under the circumstances.
You need to backup everything from the hard drive to a new drive.
Please read the link below.

Data Recovery Tutorial: How to Slave a Hard Drive
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/
This is a tutorial from Jacqui Best about the proper procedure for slaving your hard drive prior to running data recovery software on it. This would also be the procedure to FOLLOW if you were to run speed clone to sector clone a noisy drive or if you have a partition problem and need to repair or recover data from a partition or if you need to restore or undelete a file.

It is very important to not download data recovery software directly to the effected hard drive. If you don’t have a second drive or don’t have either a USB drive or USB capable data recovery software, then you must hook the drive up as a slave to run the software.
Here is the logic for this kind of approach.
A. The hard drive may fail with no further warning.
B. The cost of data recovery is well over $1100.
C. A new hard drive is under $100.
D. Prevention (preemptive action) is better that a cure.

If you can not use the recommended procedure, best come back and let the forum know and get some more ideas from other members.

After setting this option your xp will be updating automatically. If you shut down the computer at first update file automatically INSTALL and log off. Don't PUSH the hard reset button.

Solve : Keyboard trouble.?

Answer»

When I turned my computer on today the keyboard was not functioning and the cursor was not visable on the desktop, it's working properly now after restarting the computer four times but has been acting up lately, the wire as it enters the keyboard may be a problem since moving it SEEMS to have an effect, making the lights on the keyboard turn off and on, but there are no visable cracks in the wire and I've taken the keyboard apart and cleaned it with air, I'm wondering is this a common keyboard problem or an issue inside the computer ? I'd rather not replace the keyboard if I don't really have to.

Not sure if this is related but I've also noticed the mouse acting STRANGE, slight movement can cause the cursor to zip across the desktop and sometimes while on websites the slidebar will zip to the bottom of the page.

My computer is a 6 year old HP Compaq Presario SR 1500NX desktop, the keyboard is the original Compaq model # 5137, the mouse is Compaq too.

Many thanks in advance, I'm hoping I won't be replying from a public computer at our local library !

If I boot my computer without a mouse plugged in I don't see a cursor, so maybe your mouse is malfunctioning too.

The wire under the rubber sheath may be deformed, since you say moving the wire causes the keyboard's lights to turn on and off. Unless you frequently plug your keyboard/mouse in and out of your computer, I wouldn't WORRY about the computer's ports being damaged.
The best way would be to test with a known working keyboard to check if the problem persists.
If you want to replace your keyboard/mouse, there are plenty within the range of $1-$10. I personally don't think its any worth shelling out more than $25 for a keyboard/mouse.

Cheap mice.I would always recommend having a second keyboard and mouse around for just these situations. If a second one acts the same way, you may have a bad USB port. If you are using a PS/2 port, a USB keyboard/mouse may be just the solution you are looking for. They are pretty cheap to GET, and I wouldn't imagine replacing them would make things any worse. Thanks for all your help Transfusion and Darthgumby, I PICKED up a new keyboard and mouse, problems solved :-) you guys are great !

Solve : How save Start -> Run cache?

Answer»

I ISSUE a lot of commands in Start -> Run with connections to shares or whatever. Everytime when I reboot my desktop, I lose all that information. Is there some registry setting that prevents all that information from being removed? So you want to be able to arrow to last cached commands from command shell -or- do you want shares to hold vs having to recreate them which can be done by using /Persistent switch at end of share CREATION which you are not doing, but need to to GET it to stick after a reboot?TECHNICAL term is "Run MRU"

PROBLEM2.

above mentioned pc doesnt recognize usb devices so far i tried the following

1.uninstall and reinstall drivers
2.reinstall os
3.checked for infections
4.driver updates
5.assigning new LETTER to drive
6.using other devices(none opening)
7.checking device manager for proper functioning

please help me as soon as possible. i posted problem in same forum because second problem depends upon the first.sorry if its wrong.Select Safemode with networking....does it load Windows now ? ?Kind of a long shot - but I'm thinking you may need your motherboard drivers as the USB ports are hosted by them. Otherwise look into an external USB hub- that may work. They make PCI cards that have USB ports if necessary. It's not booting to Windows...

Let's fix that 1ST...

Solve : green laptop display?

Answer»

my laptop display turns green during the screensaver, and the computer freezes up. Have to restart after that. Why does this keep happening??

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite pro L300
HDD: 500GB
Ram: 3GB DDr2
OS: Windows Xp Pro Sp3
Does this happen on any other occasion? DOWNLOAD speedfan and check your temps.I don't KNOW why it happens, but I can tell you that other than utilizing resources unnecessarily, screen savers are useless. You are better off setting the display and hd to POWER down after a defined period of inactivity. In addition to eliminating the problem you're having, you'll conserve resources and possibly even extend the lives of your hd and display.Quote

In addition to eliminating the problem you're having, you'll conserve resources and potentially extend the lives of your hd and display.

Still check your temps and make sure that there is not another problem occurring with the PC that is manifesting itself through the screensaver. Once you are sure there is no other problem with the PC, then disable the screensaver.Turned off screen saver, now monitoring. F.Y.I - it has happend previously on numerous OCCASIONS. According to your original post it happens only when the screen saver is running. Is that true or not?In your power management app, there is a PLACE to turn off display and shut down hard drive.
Turning off the display after, say, five minutes will conserve power, a screensaver that keeps the screen ON, does not conserve power and serves no useful purpose.
I shut screen savers OFF wherever I find them.

Good Luck!

If you let your screensaver running, it will end with a distorting screen.
My mother gave me a monitor along with her husband's old computer.
Screen distorts because of screensaver.

So, finally, everybody:
Disable your screen saver. Is this screensaver one of the ones that comes with Windows or something you downloaded from the Internet?

Solve : Win xp will not start?

Answer»

hi i recently was given a dell laptop model PP11L, i push power button and it starts to and then black screen appears and states that theres might have been a problem with new installation of hardware or software... so i tried all the choices and it will not let me go into safe mode it keeps SAYING that windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt System32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys. i do not have the original installion cd. need help thanx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315311
You could borrow another XP disc of the same edition to perform recovery console.Just to be clear, you don't "perform" a recovery console, you simply enter the recovery console

More important, I agree you should try to borrow an XP CD of the same version that is installed. If the process in the link jason posted doesn't work you can try a repair installation. But either way, you need the OS CD.Oh, thanks for the correction Allan. On the other side of the COIN, you did say that the PC was given to you. So there's nothing on there that you would want or need to keep.
I'd just BLOW it off and install a new OS.
If necessary, drivers can usually be downloaded from Dell for your particular Laptop.
I just did it recently myself.

Oh, by the way, Windows 8 Developement version is now available for download from MS. It's FREE and comes with a lot of drivers, for various computers.
Coincidentally, I'm running it RIGHT now and have been for over a week now. The only driver I had to install was the driver for my printer.

Your options are as varied and far-reaching as your own imagination. Eh?

Good Luck,
Try SUSElinux. Pretty good. SOUND comes with it.

Solve : Fan keeps running while in standby?

Answer»

Running XP. It was not like this befor, but from some point on the fans stay up while in standby. Please help. This happened to me before. It's because the POWER mode is set wrong. GO into your BIOS and look for "Power Mode" or "Suspend TYPE" or something similar. It should say S1 or S3.

Here is an article: http://gsmblog.com/post/Difference-between-S1-%28POS%29-and-S3-%28STR%29-standby-mode-in-BIOS.aspxYup! I approve that he is right. There are states MODES in the bios that controls the way the peripherals works. Read your computer's user manual for more instructions about states.

Solve : How to load XP to a formated drive?

I have a windows XP desktop that had the hard drive formatted. I would like to load XP back, but all I have is an upgrade Windows XP CD SP1. Is it possible to load this CD and if so what is the procedure? Quote

all I have is an upgrade Windows XP CD SP1

I can't really say if that's the full XP install or not because I've never had a system which came with an upgrade CD. My suspecion, though, is that it is not. I THINK it's just a CD to upgrade from a previous version of windows.

Quote

I am assuming you don't know how to change the boot order in the BIOS?

See this article: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htmYou can use an upgrade disc to do a clean install, but at some POINT during the installation you'll be asked to insert an original OS disc from a previous, qualifying OS to insure that you have it.You will need to have a qualifying Win98/Me/2000 CD to insert if you are using an upgrade version of XP to clean install. OEM restore disks will usually not fulfill the qualifying requirement.I did change the boot sequence. It responded with "Press any key to boot from CD" and then it follows with "Invalid system disk"
It would appear that I am at a dead end without the proper start up disk.

Thanks

FRED

Sounds like a copy of an MS XP CD...
As long as you have a validation code you can borrow any MS XP CD to re-install...
This is perfectly legal.
An upgrade CD won't cut it i'm afraid...

NOTE: The version of the CD has to match what was originally installed...I have the XP product code. It is still attached to the side of the PC. Do you think I can get a disk e-bay, or is there a source to download one?

Fred

You can use a genuine, functioning, undamaged Microsoft XP Upgrade disk to do a clean install to a MACHINE with no existing installed OS. (Even one with a new blank hard drive, where nothing that was "originally installed" is there.) In that situation, at the start of the install process, the user will be prompted to insert a qualifying Microsoft install CD with this message:

"Please insert your Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium CD into your CD-ROM drive."

After verification, you can then delete, create, and format partitions.

This indicates that either the cd is not bootable because it is unreadable or damaged or the CD drive is faulty.

Solve : alphanumeric 'stuff'?

Answer»

Hope I spelled that right ? Anyway, when trying to register a password for some site, I try to make it as secure as possible, using a variety of letters, symbols & etc. Often, I get a message that I need to use alpha numeric symbols or whatever. Give me some advice here, PLEASE ?
And thanks for answering my first post. Quote

In computers designed for English language users, alphanumeric (sometimes SEEN as ) are those comprised by the combined set of the 26 alphabetic characters, A to Z, and the 10 Arabic numerals, 0 to 9. In some usages, the alphanumeric character set may include both upper and lower case letters, punctuation marks, and symbols (such as @, &, and *, for example). For languages other than English, alphanumeric characters include letter variations such as é and ç. For some computer usages, such as file naming, alphanumeric characters are strictly limited to the 26 alphabetic characters and 10 numerals; however, for other usages, such as programming, other keyboard symbols are sometimes permitted.

Solve : help with error message in outlook express?

Answer»

I get this error message when I try to retrieve my e-mail. Is there a fix for it?
error (0x800CCC92)
I have not downloaded anything or changed anything. It started today.

Thank you.A Google search on error (0x800CCC92) seems to mostly yield findings pertaining to Outlook, not Outlook Express. So, please CONFIRM that you mean Outlook Express, not Outlook. They are not the same thing. And, what version do you have?I just turned my COMPUTER on a few minutes ago and outlook express is working the way it should. I have no idea why it was doing that all day yesterday. I still think it had something to do with my server, but when I called them, they SAID no, so I was going to look further into it today... But thank you for respondingMarjorie,
If you're still watching this forum, go into your O.E. folders and clean out the Inbox, Sent Items Folder, Deleted Items Folder and any others folders that are getting large. I've seen Outlook Express lock up, because folders are too large to load into memory.

When outlook express goes wonky on my own PC, I just reboot the PC and it's USUALLY OK.

Good Luck,
Been 8 Days...she's been abducted. It seemed to CORRECT itself. I think it was on the server's end, but they won't admit it lol... I have no idea why it happened, or why it is now working..

Solve : Windows Explorer random closing?

Answer»

Hi

I have scanned & saved hundreds of family photos and am trying to reorder them so I don't have DUPLICATES etc. etc.

When doing this, I get the "Windows Explorer has enountered a problem & has to close". I click "ok" and it closes and then comes back with the normal home screen (all icons present & correct). If I try to do the same file reordering, it does it again, so I can't finish what I started.

I understand that the most likely cause is a shell extension somewhere causing this to happen.

I have the shellxview programme which comes up with over 100 shell extensions. It was ALSO suggested to disable some of them & see if that solves the problem.

1) Can I disable ALL of them & enable them one by one, or will that just stop my computer working?
2) Which ones are more likely to cause this problem?
3) I also get Explorer closing when I go into a folder with avi's in it. Is this related, do you think?

Any help & idiots guide will help greatly, thanks!

Ian
How many photos do you have in one folder?
Well the "main" folder is 26.9Gb, and the folders within that is 1271 folders & 22,032 FILES.

I just want to get rid of all the duplicates, and stop the Windows explorer error message - it happened when I looked at the folders!

I'm not sure if the number of files is relevant, simply because I have a totally separate folder with a few avi's in it & it does exactly the same when I open that one and try to move files ....A common problem that rears its ugly head when you open a large folder, is that for a folder to open it has to fit in memory. Either add more memory (RAM) or split your large folders down into smaller folders.

Then, start the process of getting your pictures off of your Hard Drive and on to much safer DVD's.
A hard drive is the worse possible place to store things that you don't want to loose, like personal pictures.

Good Luck,
Cheers TheShadow,

This is the message I get when Windows Explorer gives up:

Error Signature

AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: divx.dll
ModVer: 6.8.5.9
Offset: 0012e59d

I will try splitting the folders down, that may help, but is the above anything to go by?

CheersQuote from: CaptainChaos on November 11, 2011, 09:32:34 AM

AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: divx.dll
ModVer: 6.8.5.9
Offset: 0012e59d

divx.dll is associated with a video codec used to play mpeg4 AVI files. It could also be part of a virus, if you have been downloading video files or software from dubious sources.

1. The crash could be caused by Explorer trying to create thumbnails. You could check this by seeing if the problem goes away if you open Explorer (first of all in a non-problem folder, naturally) and choose any view other than Thumbnails, (e.g. Details or List) and then go into Tools - Folder Options - View and click the "Apply to all folders".

If it does go away then at least we've got a clue what to try next.

2. Have you, or anyone else using this computer, downloaded videos from torrent sites or run any dodgy exe files? Have you got antivirus? Is it up-to-date? When did you last run a virus scan?

If you haven't lately then you should, and if a virus or viruses are detected, post in the Malware section.

I think TheShadow had the right answer ... the folder with all the sub-folders was 26.9Gb, 1271 folders and 22,033 files.

I've just opened a new folder and taken 50 folders at a time & worked on them - no Explorer crashing so far.

Maybe that was it.

Salmon ... I've got Malwarebytes, AVG 8.5, Spybot, CCLEANER, Adaware and Zone Alarm. They've all come up clean.

It could be the thumbnail thing, too, because I'm sure the computer is thinking "oh come on - how many files?" and gives up.

I don't download any dodgy stuff, although the hijackers/virus makers are getting really clever & sneaky at the moment!

Thanks for your help.

One last question about CCleaner. Is it safe to just do a clean with the analyzed results (the ticked box ones) or should I know what I'm doing? With CCleaner you can safely clean all but the registry...Do not waste your time with Internet Explorer. Everything Microsoft does not smell too good. Install Firefox or Google Chrome and have no problem.

Solve : Wall Paper Screen Issues?

Answer»

I am not sure which group to post this problem I am having with, so here goes. I will attempt to describe the problem as best I can.

About 4 weeks ago, I was changing the picture for my wall paper, and when I WENT to the screen where the photo was supposed to show up, ALMOST 2/3 of the screen is completely white. I do not know what I did to cause this, and I have went back and tried to SEE if I could recognize any errors I may have MADE and I am coming up empty. If anyone might know how I can solve this, please shoot me an email. I would be most appreciative.

erinandalexmomPost your computer model and monitor specs. on your next post. What OS are you running? How about other Wallpapers?
