Solve : CONTROL PANEL?

Answer»

IN MY CONTROL PANEL I SAW SOMETHING THAT I DIDN'T LIKE I SAW THIS????HOW CAN I FIX THAT??

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Turn off your capslock...I suggest you just ignore it, it isn't doing any harm. But if you insist on getting rid of it you can delete the .cpl control panel item from the \windows\system32 folder or use tweakxp to manage what appears in the control panelApparently, you have Client Services for NetWare installed. If you want to try uninstalling it, see http://www.computing.net/answers/netware/how-can-i-uninstall-csnw-/4528.html. However, I agree with Allan that it's probably not doing any harm and trying to remove it may be more trouble than its WORTH. Quote from: patio on September 19, 2010, 06:39:10 AM

Turn off your capslock...
oh my bad i found out how to take it off ( In control panel, click on NETWORK and internet connections. Then click on network connections. Right click on properties and select the network/internet connection you use. Check each one individually by right clicking and then clicking properties. When you see the client services on network in the list of properties click on it to remove the small x. don't click anything else. Now scroll down and hit uninstall. Your PC will reboot with the old network logon. After it does go back to control panel and click user ACCOUNTS and CHANGE how people logon. Now you will be allowed to re-establih the WELCOME and fast switching tabs that network disabled. )thanks for reporting back to us on that.

Solve : Cannot format my hard drive?

Answer»

New Zealand firm Compucon computer CPU AMD Motherboard MSI K8T Neo MS-6702 ver 1.00 XP pro SP2
I got this computer from work when they upgraded on the condition I formatted it, but I cant format it
1 it will not boot from OS CD
2 it will not format from xp Disc Management ( Format grayed out will not operate)
3 it will not format from the recovery console
4 In Bios I reset default and still will not format
5 When starting it says press F10 for boot set up It says it is Gigabyte Boot set up in there it says CD disabled
6 when booting up it says no disc found
7 I have tried everything I know now I am lost please help meSwap in another optical drive...and make sure you have the CD set as 1st boot device...

You cannot format from within Windows itself...this is normal...

The command in RC would be format C:/u fs:ntfs and hit enter...is this what you tried ? ?

It also appears the CDROM is disabled on boot.

Hi Thanks for your post.

1st thing I did was change optical drive
Command in RC I used as from google C:/Q fs:ntfs
Disc drive is disabled in boot

When I tried to format in RC it after putting in the command it would tell me all info would be lost etc when I hit Y it comes up as if nothing happened back to command prompt.
How can Format be blocked like this.

I was thinking of taking out the CMOS battery to reset bios but wondering if cd drive disablement would still be there?

Regards

HughBoot to the OS cd, start the INSTALLATION routine, early on you'll be offered the option to format. After formatting, exit the installation.Cannot boot to OS CD in bios cd is not mentioned in Gigabyte boot sequence it has CD disabled ( It is not a Gigabyte MB it is MSI?) I asked the people who installed the computers and software and neither could help ?? Mystery Quote from: kit2hugh on September 17, 2010, 04:17:51 PM

...I was thinking of taking out the CMOS battery to reset bios but wondering if cd drive disablement would still be there?...
YES, that should work.HI I removed the CMOS battery tonight and it still does not boot up from Disc.
There is a programme called Gigabyte Boot Agent which reads
Scan Devices Please Wait

No Disc detected

To me that says it is not picking up disc drive or could be Hard Drive

The things you can change
are PXE cannot change the next line has CDROM DISABLE this can be changed to various things but every position does not work.

How can I get rid of this Gigabyte Boot Agent the only thing on Google I found was to flash the computer but I do not understand that.

Please help or this computer is going to become a boat anchor

Thanks

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]In what way did your clock change?Quote from: Kip on September 19, 2010, 05:50:19 PM

In what way did your clock change?
you saw the PICI see what your clock looks like now, but not what it used to look like. It looks the same as the clock on my XP computer.

As a guess, do you want 12-hour time with AM and PM?

If so, go to your "Control Panel", and then "Regional and Language Options".
In the Regional and Language Options WINDOW, click "Customize..." and go to the "Time" tab.
You can change the format of the time in the "Time format:" field.
For 12-hour time with AM and PM, choose "h:mm:ss tt" from the drop-down menu.Quote from: Kip on September 19, 2010, 07:21:36 PM

Solve : GDI32.dll error?

Answer»

So today I tried booting into my laptop when it blue screened stating this....
"The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitsSize could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll"
... now that isn't the issue. I've found a solution and it's a simple as replacing the file "GDI32.dll" in the System32 folder with a copy. From what I'm reading there supposed to be an EXTRA copy in (C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\I386\), though when booting from the CD I TRY copying from that location and it returns a "File not found" error. So then I FIND the correct directory that the file is held on the CD and try using the copy command to copy that file, and even though I can find the file using the dir command it still returns a "File not found" error. Is there a reason for this? I can see the file with the dir command and I know it's on the CD, though for what ever reason it STATES the file isn't there and I cant copy it, sadly this is not a Windows 7 MACHINE so I cant use the xcopy command which seems to copy the files that the copy command refuses to. Any ideas? This is my only XP machine, and I cant format the drive because I'd lose very important data.Quote

Files on Windows CD are compressed.
Your file (GDI32.dll) on Windows CD will look like this: GDI32.dl_
You have to use expand command, not copyWorked beautifully, thanks a lot! This has taken a load off my mind. You're very welcome

Solve : At&t could not resolve my issue, can you??

Answer»

Hold on, we're getting somewhere.

Retry "ping" command.same response: Try steps listed below. If they won't help, your ethernet card may be simply busted. If that's the case, no big deal, because you can get new one for about 15 bucks.
Here you go....

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
TURN off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-FIX (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a FILE. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may LEAD to the fix!

Restart computer.

Just an FYI; it's an AT&T 2-Wire Modem/Router COMBINATION (2-Wire is the brand). No way to split the modem from the router. http://www.2wire.com/

ORI'd assume, that if the OP can't perform some step(s), he won't do it Actually, I thought it might give you, not the OP, some additional insight. I've done some troubleshooting with the AT&T 2-Wire for a friend; it's the only modem or router I know of with a Default Gateway of 192.168.1.254. I had a tough time getting the 2-Wire to allow another router to get through it's internal firewall, which is accessible through 192.168.1.254. I didn't even know it had one until I stumbled across it and it displayed on the directly connected computer. Thanks

Solve : NORTON 360 - WEBROOT SPY SWEEPER CONFLICT??

I need to upgrade my 2006 Norton anti virus to Norton 360. I am also running

With all due resepct kpac, repeating yourself doesn't make you right. If you want us to accept a statement like that, back it up with some documented facts. So what makes you right? I never said I was right, it's my opinion that there are free AVs which are real COMPETITORS to commercial ones. You didn't state an opinon, you stated it as fact. Back it up.
But to answer your rudely put question, here's one of many reviews supporting my statement: http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/norton-360/4505-3667_7-32330411.htmlAnyway, if free is floating your boat, there are some good choices for free.

I would, though, not run two antimalware/antispyware/virus programs simultaneously with realtime protection all enabled.

For feshbow, who already has Webroot Spy Sweeper and it's active and without any virus detection module I assume, then a Malwarebyes or a SuperAntispyware or a A-Squared free may be enough (the free VERSIONS in which no realtime protection or automatic updates are available) for second opinion (I think).Quote from: http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/norton-360/4505-3667_7-32330411.html

To answer your question no, no conflicts. Thanks all for your attention to my question. I will run Norton 360 for anti virus, and Webroot for spyware. I would like to keep Webroot for some of the neat extra features. If this dose not work out I'll let you KNOW.

Well, without knowing what caused the problem it's it's very difficult to diagnose. Let's try a repair install and see if we can get you back in business. Boot to your XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on TOP of itself. If successful, you'll need to go to Windows Update and re-download and install all updates.does that mean i will loose all my original stuff ?I have a xp disc but it/s sp2 &i/ve got sp3 is it o.k. to use?No and No. When done properly, all programs and settings will remain intact. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Using your clean working computer do the following:

1. Go to START -> Run, and type notepad into the box.
2. Click OK.
3. Copy and paste the following code into Notepad:

Code: [Select]Ren C:\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.123
Ren C:\windows\system32\config\SAM SAM.123

4. Go to File -> SaveAs then enter: ren.bat (save it as all files (*.*))
5. Then.. Save it on the flash drive. Do NOT save this file on the working computer.
6. After that insert the flash drive into the infected computer before booting the system.
7. Once booted with OTLPE CD, go to Start My Computer then go to your flash drive and copy the batch file to the desktop then double click it to run it.
8. See, if you can boot bad computer normally.
No luck...

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM..."

I noticed when I executed the ren.bat, that many lines of text were displayed, all of similar fashion, that read like this:

"B:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Desktop>Ren C:\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.123
The system cannot find the file specified."

This was repeated for the SAM.123, the SECURITY.123, and so on. (I tried to copy and paste this text box, but it must have some type of protection because I was not able to do so.)I see that I can access my C:\ drive through this REATOGO system. My minimum hope when I started this post was to be able to access my C:\ drive one more TIME in order to copy pictures and other files that I had stored and had not backed up.

You have helped me get to this point, and I appreciate it. I will copy these files tomorrow and then, I don't really need to continue to save the computer...I can use the Operating Disc and restore it to factory defaults.

However, if you desire to keep working on this to try to salvage it without having to do a factory restore, then I'm game.

Yes, using that CD, you can navigate through your drive and backup anything you want.

However, I can see now, I made a mistake in my code. It was late and I was tired. Sorry for that

The correct code should read:

Solve : imaging hard drive?

Answer»

I have heard of this but have not yet tried it. Can anyone explain to me how it works? I've heard that you can save the entire contents of a HARD drive to a single CD-Rom. Is that so? Are there any freeware versions of the imaging programs?

If I made an image of the hard drive and then reformatted my hard drive, could I reload my personal files from the image on the disc? Would I have to load all of the content of the image or could I pick and choose which things to drag from the disc (like with files burned in the ordinary way on any CD-Rom)?Answer 1:

Personally i use and recommend Acronis True Image for this...but it's not Free.
For a Free app my recommendation would be Macrium Reflect...best out there.

Answer 2:

Not sure why you would want to do it that way but the short answer would be yes...individual files/folders can be retrieved from the image file itself...or you can use it the way it was meant for which would be to RESTORE the machine to the day the image was created...

Hope this helps.http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspYes, it is possible to save the entire contents to an external source, however the odds of being able to save an entire disc image to a CD-ROM is quite low. What you would need is either A) an external HDD or B) a DVD burner and DVD's assuming that your image is under 4.7 gigs. An image is an exact replica of your HDD, yes you can choose what you put on the image, but as far as content loaded it loads all of what the image contains if used the way the image is intended which is to restore the computer to the day it was imaged (however, you can load individual content by exploring the disc)Quote from: talontromper on September 16, 2010, 06:51:07 PM

No, not usually. Images are usually a special format. Acronis uses a special, compressed "TIB" file, I BELIEVE. don't know what Macrium uses but it's certainly not represented by an on-disc folder structure. Both Acronis and Macrium Reflect have an Explore feature that enables you to manipulet individual files/folders...

And for talon just so you know both apps also have a "spanning" feature...which means if it takes more than 1 CD/DVD to burn the file structure remains intact.I did not know that thanks for the extra little bit of knowledge thereNo problem...Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 16, 2010, 07:08:59 PM

Yes, as patio said you can indeed view and retrieve individual files and folders from the image. Acronis will allow you to MOUNT the image as a separate drive to make the process simple.

What account? You need to CLARIFY your question. We understand just fine, don't worry about it.Quote from: Allan on August 28, 2010, 11:50:41 AM
We understand just fine, don't worry about it.

She has refered to her 'membership' here as an 'account', it's not that hard to understand, surely!!I will acknowledge that interpretation, after re-reading his/her posts. But, such vague wording does require some guesswork in interpreting the meaning. If they were referring to membership, or ... OK ... an "account", in this forum, they should at least mention the forum instead of just saying an "account".

It's a simple matter to simply add a few extra words to clearly state the message.
Soybean

Agreed, it's not always best to guess or assume, especially on this forum, maybe english isn't their first language, i don't know to be honest. But you must ADMIT that most often people don't even put whether they have a latop or desktop, or what OS they have when asking for help. They need help but do not even read the 'how to post' instructions. The usual thing seems to be 'My computer doesn't work, it goes to a blue screen, please help'. A few extra words by alot of people wouldn't go amiss. I totally agree. As I read the OP, gaarazgurl, who has a few posts already, (and one thanked), has opened a membership for her grandmother, under the name of hodge, and probably bookmarked it for her, so when her grandmother does have a problem she knows where to go for help.

And, yeah, it probably could have been posted in the Other section, but no big deal.

Solve : Harddrive Data recovery?

Answer»

Computer information
Dell
Dimension 3000
Windows XP Home

Problem

Upon booting it attempt to load windows. It will display the Windons XP loco briefly and then go to a BLUE error screen. The error screen says that the harddrive is corrupted. Run CHKDSK /F.........

I have attempted without success to Start in safe mode, last known configuration normal and all other options. It will repeat the process and return to the blue screen.

MY question is..... They is a lot of data that the owner of compute would like to have recover from old hard drive. I have heard of this being done. Can anyone give me some advice on how to do this? I do have another IDE hard drive I can use the computer.....Boot to your XP CD, choose the first repair option, enter the recovery CONSOLE and run chkdsk /rSorry.... I left out this information

The Hard drive was replace with a use Hard drive out of another computer...
So I was wondering.... if running the hard drive witha problem as a slave would work to recover the data?Ignore the chkdsk... if the hard drive is damaged at a hardware level then it will do no good at repairs (EXCEPT for covering up small holes), it can actually damage it more making it harder to recover. USING this is great if it's a software corruption, but if you are going to recover the data from a damaged disc, chkdsk will just MAKE this harder or impossible.

Yes, you want to set the hard-drive as a slave or connect it from the computer via another like a laptop. The main hard-drive needs to have a valid working, clean, virus protected OS. Virus protection is a must!

You may need to get Hard Drive Recovery Software (there's a lot available but not normally quality ones for free) which slowly nibbles the data off the damaged HD discs. Some of the files recovered might be missing filenames, directory structures, etc and have to be pieced together manually.

This takes time depending on the amount of damage.

A lot of computer companies offer services to do this for you at a price which is probably less than the recovery software cost. High quality professional recovery software can cost up to $1000, depending on the amount of data to recover! Virus protection is already loaded....I not sure if this problem came from a virus or not.... She (owner) has made some indications that she "thinks" it may have .... which reading through the lines I say hmmm yeah..... Just my opinion LOL

Anyway anyone have ant suggestions on the data recovery software. I 'm looking for the free stuff. At this point She is aware that data recovery may not be possible....
Thanks for the help .... I got a handle on it now.

Solve : Unpredictable partial keyboard failure?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP (SP3) on a Dell Inspiron DESKTOP purchased about 3 years ago. I've had intermittent keyboard problems from the beginning: Each morning when I start it up, the keyboard might work fine, or a single key (e.g., Escape or a random letter or number) might not function. I've tried several keyboards and the problem persists, so it doesn't appear to be the hardware. Everything looks OK in Device Manager (except for the fact that I now seem to have duplicate keyboard devices LISTED), and when I tried to reinstall the keyboard driver from my disk, Windows refused, saying my current driver was up to DATE. I've also tried several different USBports, all of which work fine with other devices. I’m stumped!1) Have you tried connecting via the ps2 connector?
2) What happens in safe mode? Thanks for the prompt response. The problem started with PS2 keyboards that I connected with the help of a USB adapter (because my computer has no PS2 port). I went through several keyboards and several adapters before giving up and switching to a USB keyboard . . . only to discover that the problem persisted.

Because the problem is intermittent, though, and all keys work fine sometimes, I'm not sure what I would learn by starting up in safe mode. You would learn if it's a driver issue or not for starters...I meant that everything might work OK in safe mode, but that wouldn't necessarily prove anything since the problem doesn't show up every TIME. But let's say that a key or two fails when I'm in safe mode. Does that mean it is or isn't a driver at fault? No.
What Allan is suggesting is if there are no issues in safemode then for sure it;s the driver...
Why not try it and see ? ?Thanks for persisting. I started up in safe mode and, sure enough, two keys didn't work. So what can we conclude from this, and what's my next step?New keyboard...I've tried four or five keyboards -- PS/2s (with adapter) and USBs (like the current one), brand new ones and older ones that worked fine with other COMPUTERS -- and the problem shows up with every single one. That's why I ruled out hardware as the cause long ago.

Solve : Please help! Cannot complete bootup into XP SP2 in any modes...?

Answer»

Hi all, desperate for some help here - hope all is well as I have not had to post here in ages.

WINXP PRO SP2 [all patches current]

In a nutshell, I believe that my issue is related to the problem described here, with SPTD.sys and a registry setting:
http://www.greatis.com/security/What%20is%20SPTD%23%23%23%23.sys.htm

and

http://www.daemonpro-help.com/en/problems_and_solutions/registry_and_sptd_problems.html

I recall recently deleting a file with this similar name: SPTD9885.SYS from my system.

Things were running fine for several days. However, tonight I simply restarted my machine and now I am unable to boot into XP either normally or in Safe Mode, no success under any profiles.

The behavior is one I have never encountered before: The login screen APPEARS normally in all modes, I can attempt to log in under all profiles, but once the process begins and before the START bar or desktop icons appear, the machine immediately initiates a LOGOFF/SHUTDOWN. The last message I see is CLOSING NETWORK CONNECTIONS and I am thrown back into the login/profiles screen.

- There is no blue screen error.
- This infinite loop occurs in all boot modes.

I have:
- Done an inplace REPAIR INSTALLATION with no results - I still cannot complete the XP bootup sequence after login.
- I do not have Recovery Console installed [and in fact have been unable to install it - so I could use help with this as well in case this could be productive].

I have reason to believe that this may be the cause of my problems as the SPTD.sys file described is installed on my system [I do believe I have Daemon tools installed, though I never really use it].

I have been able to successfully rename the SPTD.SYS file in c:\window\system32\ to SPTD.OLD but I suspect the registry entries are still causing my issues as the inability to complete bootup persists.

Formatting the machine is not an option - using XP CD I can see my data/partitions/disks are fine. CHKDSK /R has been successfully run with no errors.

I am unclear how to access the registry to locate and delete the entries [or even to attempt] the steps in either of the possible solutions above.

Can someone please assist me with step-by-step instructions on how to access my registry from outside of XP so I can try and find and remove any of the offending entries?

Or am I going about this completely wrong and there are other options to explore?

Desperately need help/advice.

tia,
-lestatar

Uninstall Daemon tools...
Re0boot and run Revo Uninstaller to get rid of any stray files from it...
Then go to Start/Run and type in SFC /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
When it finishes remove the CD and re-boot.

Recovery Console Guide...

Hope this helps...Patio, thanks so much for the response.

However, I am unclear as to how to proceed with your suggestions.

Given that I cannot stay logged into XP as I originally described [as soon as I select a profile, enter the password under any mode, the boot process begins but never completes to Windows desktop, instead bouncing me immediately back to the XP Login screen], how do I:

- Uninstall Daemon Tools?
- How do I run Revo Uninstaller?
- How do I access Start/Run and launch SystemFileChecker?

Also, as for Recovery Console....How can I install Recovery Console directly from my XP CD? The link you include describes the process from within XP [which I cannot get into].

Thanks so much again - this really does appear to be an odd issue and I really can use all your help please.

-lestatar

- F8 to Safe/w networking
- select profile, enter password
- settings begin loading then process aborts, network connections close and I am kicked back to login screen

Simply unable to remain in XP atm...

Hi Patio, still no joy.

Booting to Safe w/networking, I see 2 accounts, ADMINISTRATOR and Henry. Selecting either and pressing "enter" does not allow me to log in at all.

Patio, yes, I do have a password for the Administrator account. Entering the password beings the login process, but still results in the same effect, where the XP does not complete loading to desktop and I get tossed out to the safe w/networking login screen.

All/mods, this topic can be closed or marked SOLVED.

I was able to resolve my issue with guidance from ##windows on freenode irc.

For information sake, the steps described starting here [especially from Step 4 on] were 100% successful in my case. Following them to the letter allowed me to to fully boot into SAFE mode and then make the registry changes indicated in the links in my first post.

Thanks so much again [Patio] and hopefully this info may be useful to others who encounter the same thing.

Solve : Copy, Cut, Paste, Win+E, and right-clicking on files freezes programs?

Answer»

I really don't understand what caused this to start happening. I haven't installed or uninstalled ANYTHING in weeks. When I try to cut, copy, paste or delete files using hotkeys, right-click, drag-n-drop or a WIZARD, in explorer or otherwise, such as FreeCommander, the program doing the cutting and whatnot freezes. The only exceptions are TeraCopy and the console, and with teracopy only when I use it standalone - it freezes as well as zeplorer when it's hijacking the copy function. It also happens when I hit win+E and when I right click on anything in Explorer. Security Center is also reporting Avast! as off, when in the system tray, running the UI and in ProcessExplorer and Belarc Advisor, it's clearly on and functioning.

When it first happened, I just opened ProcessExplorer (I have it set to hijack the normal task manager) and restarted explorer.exe. When that didn't do it, I deleted explorer.exe, restarted and expanded a fresh copy from the I386 folder in WINDOWS. That didn't do it, so I ran avast!, spybot, and when those did nothing, RegSeeker. After these, I downloaded the few hotfixes from Microsoft I hadn't and restarted, which did nothing. I tried system restoring to before the freeze started happening, but all system restores failed - I'm guessing because they couldn't move or copy files. I've also run chkdsk /f a couple of times, but it's finding nothing wrong.

Here's a bunch of data for you:

thanks salmon trout! patio and allan too!

i know the RAM caused blue screens, i meant should i do any tests to see if anything else is wrong that could also have caused/contributed to the blue screens?

i was looking at the virus and spyware removal guide. i figure while i'm at it, i may as well make sure my system is clean. i've done most of that in the past, except hijackthis (and i only have the windows xp firewall). malewarebytes and superantispyware have never found any issues on my computer. i just ran hijackthis/sniper. can someone here tell me what the log means? or should i start a new topic in the virus/spyware forum? here is the log:

i know the RAM caused blue screens, i meant should i do any tests to see if anything else is wrong that could also have caused/contributed to the blue screens?

Just fit the new RAM, if there is anything else wrong, you'll find out soon enough.
thanks, i will check out some websites and order new RAM soon...

what about the hijackthis log i posted above?Quote from: becca on August 31, 2010, 10:35:05 AM

Maybe you should post it in the virus section, but personally I think you are over analysing this. The symptoms sounded like RAM troubles, you ran a test, you got a result, you are buying new RAM. Why INVENT new reasons to be worried?
i'm not worried and i'm not over-analyzing. i know the ram caused the blue screens. and thank you for diagnosing that... but in looking around this site over the past few weeks (i was referred here by someone who used these forums for spyware removal), i saw the virus/spyware removal guidelines. i figured it would be a good thing to do to make sure the system is clean. not worrying, just thought it wise to do.Good Point...
After you have installed the new RAM then visit the Malware section for a clean bill of health...
Better to be thorough...thanks patio! i will wait for the new RAM then post in the malware forum.

i appreciate everyone's help, which saved me from having to buy a new computer (at least for now)! No PROBLEM...it's why were here...

Solve : Stuck on black screen at startup?

Answer»

I've been having a problem with my computer with a few BSOD.
One time my computer was only running firefox and then completely froze out and I couldnt open task manager, switch users or anything. I let the computer sit there for a while not wanting to click anything thinking it would unfreeze by itself in a short while, and then suddenly a noise started coming out at regular intervals. Then the computer just switched off.

On restart I got a BSOD that i wrote down but ive lost the paper for the error message now. I ran chkdsk from the XP CD and it finished and then I got another BSOD, this time saying

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

I googled it and ran chkdsk again, with it completing and then this time I got another BSOD message.

"Stop:C0000135 (unable to locate component) This application has failed to start because USP10.dll was found. Re-installing the application may fix this"

I ran chkdsk again a few times and still nothing happened, still getting the same BSOD message.

After more googling I found out to run a repair installation, the website I USED just told me to "continue with on-screen instructions". So I ran the repair installation and the first time I ran it, the computer restarted and I thought it had been fixed. Windows XP appeared to be installing itself for the first time and I paniced because I thought I had accidentally pressed the wrong button and chosen to fresh install a copy of windows. I immediately held the POWER button to power-down my computer.

I now realise that it was supposed to happen, because everytime I try to repeat the repair installation again, the computer restarts but before it gets to that blue windows setup screen, it remains on an all black screen with a functioning mouse.
If I try to boot the computer normally, or in safe mode, it will load the Windows logo with the green bar and then after that, it will stay on the black screen with a mouse.
If I repeat the repair installation, when the computer restarts it will follow the same steps as above and reach the black screen and I cannot get back to that blue windows setup screen which would've been the next part of the repair install.

What should I do now? I don't know what "I ran chkdsk means", so let's make sure you're doing it correctly.

Boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option, which will take you to the Recovery Console. Once there, run chkdsk /Rhi thanks for the response.
yeah ive been running chkdsk /r using the recovery console from the disc, however i have not tried it since the black screen problem, i will run it now and post back with the new outcome
Thanks"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error often means hard drive issue.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the BRAND of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

OKay I've ran chkdsk /r and I am still getting the same black screen on startup. However I am no longer getting any BSOD anymore.

I only got the "UN"MOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error once, and then the BSOD message changed. And now I no longer get any BSOD but get stuck on a black screen, should I still follow your instructions?Go to safe mode and try remove unknown items in your startup.
May be virus or your hard disk.
If this not help try reinstall windows.

should I still follow your instructions?
Yes, or follow patio's reply.Okay I found out my hard drive is a Maxtor, so I downloaded the relevant Maxtor tool and burned the .iso to a CD.
When I ran the CD on my computer, it loaded and this appeared:
Quote
Starting Caldera DR-DOS...

HIMEM.SYS 2.34

Caldera DR-DOS 7.83
Copyright (c) 1976, 1998 Caldera, Inc. All RIGHTS reserved.

A:\>fdrpowermax.exe -no log

That screen stayed up for a few seconds, then another black screen that looks like a command prompt opened up and remained saying:
A:\>
A:\>hhhhh

The second time it said:
A:\>
A:\>fdr

Then the third time it said:
A:\>
A:\>gg

It appears to just be putting random letters up each time I retry.Which Maxtor tool did you use?
Are you booting from created CD?Your HDD is failing...
Backup what you need immediately...you may not get a 2nd chance.Hey thanks for the help so far everyone.

I used the Maxtor PowerMax 4.23 Bootable CD .ISO image file and yeah I was booting from a created CD.

Okay so should I be looking to slave drive now.
You may as well...

Solve : Computer not always turning on?

Answer»

Why are you changing the CPU speed ? ?At the moment as only way to get it working its at default 1100Mhz it selects
but its a Socket A 3200Mhz processor
never has picked it up as that on default
always had to SET it to that in BIOS settings
then when it LOADS up says 3200Mhz on that loading screen

but i dont think this problem is to do with that as at default does the same doesnt always start.

What MBoard is this ? ?Abit NF7-SYou will have to consult your MBoard manual for setting that CPU speed properly...i believe the FSB has to be changed as well to accomodate that CPU...
This is probably the root cause of your issues...Hi

yes I did that.

Things have got bad to WORSE now after changing the PSU, im on my very old slow computer at moment because my other blew up with the PSU change!!

I took the PSU out this computer a 600w, put it in that one, easy to do i done before in past, turned it on, power first then on by its own switch and it SPARKED and smoked, did a little bang 8(

put the one i took out other computer in here and works fine.
So wasnt PSU.

trouble is now looks like ill have to buy another computer 8(
Typical as recently made redundant and have to buy one.
Cant use this one for gaming or webwork as too slow.

Oh well guess this post is closed now computer completely dead!

Do you think the processor, graphics card, memory would still be ok in dead computer so i can sell to make alittle back?

shirl Sparking and smoking is never a good thing...
I can't tell what you did because i cannot see the machine from here...
But i can tell you that each component you may want to RESCUE from that machine would have to be tested to see if it's saleable...

Solve : dOTnet framework 1.1 screws up login?

Answer»

I use an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 9600XT board to watch TV on my COMPUTER.
I recently learned (from a RAGE forum) that this board works best with .NET Framework version 1.1 ihstalled.
Every time I install the .NET Framework version 1.1 REDISTRIBUTABLE from Microsoft download center it screws up my login, which I setup to require no username selection and no password entry. After all I have NO security issues with my computer, I live alone.
Anybody have a link to a NON-REDISTRIBUTABLE version of .net ver 1.1?
I would like to try that before giving up completely.
Thanks in advance for any help,Eric T.
First uninstall it.

Then install Net Framework 3.5 or higher. No, that's the point. I ALREADY have versions 2, 3, and 3.5 installed. The symptoms I'm getting are ocasional sync problems between the audio and the picture. These are the symptoms addressed by having version 1.1 also installed.
So I need to try to find a copy of 1.1 that is NOT redistributable. That is what would be on the original installation disk, if it was stil readable, which it is not.
Ain't ATI stuf FUN?!?

nonsense. The Catalyst media center app will EITHER require .NET framework 1.1 to work at all, or it won't work at all. There is no "it works better with Framework version X.X". Anybody who says that knows very little about the framework.

The versions, as you've discovered and as "mustdie" is clearly ignorant too, are not cumulative.

There are, at least from memory, Framework versions 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5, as well as the LATEST Version 4.0.

They are "cumulative" but they are not binary compatible with one another- which is to say, a program written to use the .NET 1.1 framework cannot run on a computer with only the 3.0 framework installed, even though the 3.0 framework has the same classes and FEATURES as the 1.1 framework, but with added capabilities.

This is because they decided to decouple themselves from being responsible for version incompatibilities- now when you compile a program for a specified framework, you know that you will be running with that framework, and not some newer version pretending to be an older version.

To my understanding ATI's Catalyst Control center, as well as their Catalyst Media center (which is included with their TV tuners) can run from either .NET 1.1 or .NET 2.0 frameworks, since they took precautions to work with both (according to the docs I could find as well as downloading, unpacking, and Reflecting on the assembly myself.

if that is the case, you will NOT gain anything by also having 1.1 installed. You will only need 1.1 installed if you run .NET programs that were compiled specifically to run on .NET 1.1, considering most of such applications are either useless and old or have been updated to newer versions, it's not really that necessary of a component today.

Your "sync problems" are the result of something other then framework 1.1, and possibly a side effect of something else that changes when you install it. with framework versions, either a program/assembly works and runs fine, or it doesn't start at all.

Have you tried other programs for viewing the TV tuner output? Sounds more like a problem with the application you are using to view it.Quote from: capteric36 on September 01, 2010, 11:02:09 AM
These are the symptoms addressed by having version 1.1 also installed.
So I need to try to find a copy of 1.1 that is NOT redistributable. That is what would be on the original installation disk,

Again, no such thing as a "NON-REDISTRIBUTABLE" version. Also the version on the disc is the redistributable- probably a earlier release then what is on the MS site maybe?

here's a link to what I believe is possibly an "older release" of 1.1:

http://www.oldapps.com/net_framework.php?old_net_framework=2

OK! Even the "older" version 1.1 causes my computer to be unbootable due to the username/password problem.
So I am giving up on this supposed 'fix' for my occasional audio sync problem.
I will continue to just close and re-open the TV program when it bothers me.
Thanks again for the help.

Solve : Reformat gone horribly wrong!?

Answer»

I was reformatting a computer today, everything was going smoothly when i got a prompt saying 'winserv.dll' can't be copied or something along those line. Then i tried to start the reformat all over again, but it said 'NTLDR missing' press ctrl+alt+del.
What to do now? Please help!
I also have a question, how do i know if i should delete the existing partition or over write it.
Oh yes, OS is Win xp.1) How are you performing the format?
2) How many partitions are there?
3) Which partition are you formatting?I'm reformating using the win xp cd.
There is one NTFS, one FAT and some unpartitioned space.
I'm formating the NTFS partition. Let's start again. EXACTLY how are you trying to format (tell me the exact steps you are taking).
What is on each partition? What is the drive letter of the partition you are trying to format?First i select the boot device which is the CD.
Then i press any key to boot from CD.
Then it SAYS setup is loading files.
Then it says Setup is starting windows.
Then i press enter to setup win xp.
Then i press to F8 to AGREE to the licence.
Then it shows the existing partition:
C: partition1 [NTFS] 20003 MB (19758 mb free)
D: partition2 [FAT 32] 18152 MB (18063 mb free)
Unpartitioned space 8MB
Previously i setup windows on the NTFS Partition and got the error and right now i'm waiting on this step to know what to select. Thanks! There should be an option to delete the C: partition...select it.
Then it will automatically re-create it and setup will continue...It gives me an unpartioned space 20003 MB, Do i setup windows on it now?You now need to create a partition and format it.Ok the format was complete and the computer restarted. And while installing windows a window has popped up saying 'one of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The specified network or device is no longer available. What to do now? Is this again gone wrong ? Are you using an original, RETAIL XP cd?
What is causing you to reformat? This computer has LIKE a million viruses! That's why i'm reformating. It's legal.Ok windows installation is complete. I'm installing drivers now.
Hey, I just wanted to thank you guys! It's REALLY awesome to be helped to be helped like this. Thanks

Solve : Adobe flash player?

Answer»

Update, yes it's been more than 30 days and no I still haven't been able to DOWNLOAD Adobe Flash Player, if I want to watch anything I am forced to use Chrome, I was able to find an adobe forum, for the past few days I have been directed to try the same THINGS I have already tried and a few new ones , I can't believe this has taken so long WITHOUT any results.
The reason for my post here today is in 2008 I had an issue with an anti virus/spyware vendor and the HELP I received here from this community I was able to get a full refund plus advise on free software to use ( Avast and spywareblaster) which in loaded and works perfectly, I can't believe someone here knows how to fix Adobe Flash Player,I'm not having allot of faith in the other forum
thank youMaybe you can try installing an older version of flash player to see if it works.

Try GETTING it here, instead of adobe. This is where I always download it. Remember to uninstall it first.

Solve : Reboot and select proper boot drive?

Answer»

When turning on the computer.....the hard drive starts clicking and a message comes up on the monitor "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Drive. I am really not familiar on how to fix computer problems. Please help Quote

the hard drive starts clicking
So called "click of death".
Unfortunately, you'll need a new drive.
Do you have any important data on this drive?Problem is your operating system or your HDD .
What to do
1. Try install new windows (when turned on click F8, F12, F4 button and go to Boot Menu and start booting your new windows in CD/DVD drive or removable device).
if 1. not help
2. Problem is by your HDD. Remove your HDD and insert in another PC using as secondary partition and try format which partition where is installing operating system. Then insert HDD to your PC and install new windows.
If you have files if you need in you desktop use Active (bootable progs) to restore it.Ignore the post from mustdieSame thing I posted for someone else:

Well...there are a couple of options:

1) Take the drive to a data recovery center.

At that point you have to ask yourself if it's worth $500-$3000 to do so. Big businesses MAY do this (and even some small to mid-size businesses may, if they can justify it), as the price for losing, say, customer information can be even higher...

2) Try some home remedies.

Home remedies range from bizarre to OMGWTHAYS, but have been known to work circumstantially. However, if you do any of them, you're doing them at your own risk--nobody here is responsible for the end results, even if it makes it no longer feasible to do Option #1. Then again, Option #1 aside, some people see that they have nothing more to lose, so they'll do them anyway. If you are not comfortable doing any of these things, then ignore this entire section!

Many of them include, but are not limited to:

a) Putting the drive in the freezer under the assumption that it keeps the drive cool enough to prevent the platters from expanding into the read/write HEAD.

Some have frozen their drives overnight, taken them out, hooked them back up, and were able to get some data off before permanent death. Others have connected their drives to an exposed external enclosure, and ran a USB or eSATA cable out of the freezer into their PCs (or power strip in the case of the power cord for an external enclosure.

I personally have done it both ways, and my results have been hit-and-miss--great when it works, though! However, I'd be cautious NONETHELESS simply from the condensation buildup. I can't confirm whether or not my positive results were simply correlation or that the theory about expanding platters and heat is actually true.

b) Dropping the hard drive in hopes to loosen the read head or stuck platter.

I personally wouldn't do this one simply because dropping any electronic device that's not meant to be dropped can often be a Very Bad Thing.

c) Taking the drive apart in a 100% (and I MEAN 100%) dust-free environment and putting the platters in another hard drive encasing.

I wouldn't do this one either--too much risk of making the data permanently unrecoverable, even by specialized data recovery centers. Also, who has a 100% dust-free environment in their home?

Solve : Black screen with little white line in upper left hand corner?

Answer»

Upon startup, I get the Toahiba logo just like normal. HOWEVER, I have noticed that the blue loading bar is no longer there. Now after the TOSHIBA logo screen the screen just goes black and has a small WHITE line in the upper left corner. My computer was running perfectly fine until I decided to restart the computer just because I hadn't done it in a while. Any suggestions? It may be by your BIOS.
Try remove then insert a BIOS element. (It is in your motherboard).
Ignore the post above. Can you boot to safe mode?dear Alllan!!!!
If you remove your Bios element all your setting (Bios) have been defaults. After it he can log on windows and try go to safe mode.Ignore all posts by mustdie. My computer would SOMETIMES behave that way, nothing but a black screen with a blinking underscore in the corner. I found it only happened if I had accidentally left a flash drive plugged in at startup. Removing the flash drive and rebooting solved it.

Your problem might have some other cause, but try it without any extra hardware connected just in case. No CDs, no USBs, not printer, nothing but the essentials.

Solve : Hang on Gateway screen: won't load BIOS, won't boot in safemode?

Answer»

I don't restart my XP machine very often, but after about two weeks of increasingly irritating slowness / delayed responsiveness when opening new applications or tabbing between programs, I finally decided to reboot to see if that would help.

Not a great idea apparently, as now the machine won't load at all. The power supply fan kicks in when I turn it on, but dies down pretty quickly. The INITIAL Gateway load screen (with F2/F10 to access BIOS) appears, and then... nothing happens. The screen stays there forever. No error BEEP codes, no response if I use the function keys to try to load the bios menu, and no safemode if I hit or hold F8 when I turn it on. Occasionally, it will GIVE me the normal "yeah, enough already" beeps on keypress if I continue to hit f8 as it starts up, but even that's not consistent.

I'm having some trouble CHECKING the forums for solutions, since the core problem is the absolute lack of anything happening. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I start tinkering with stuff above my paygrade.
Is the hard drive activity light on when it BECOMES unresponsive? Did you try resetting the BIOS settings?

Solve : Burning situation??

Answer»

I have NERO and DVD-Flick, I can copy and burn CD's, but when I go to burn a dvd neither one of the above programs recognize any format no matter what format it is. Nero's pop up window states that "no COMPATIBLE format is found" and DVD Flick will state " the FILE may be corrupted or the format is unsupported". It doesn't matter what web site I download a movie from or what format I seem to use those windows pop up on all of them but my media players will play them. I put a movie in and ripped it and then burned it to make sure that my burner works and it burned it fine. It seems that I only have the problem when attempting to burn a movie from the web. Am i missing a PROGRAM or something because I did buy it from some computer repair shop so I am not sure if it's missing a program or not. I look forward to recieving someone's help, ThanxDo you have a DVD burner ? ?YES, I have a Memorex DVD MULTI recorder. As I mentioned in my post I've downloaded a copy of Big Mamma onto my computer and then burned it onto a DVD with no problem but when it comes to burning anything that I have downloaded from any site there seems to be a problem. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner but I was away from the computer until now

Solve : black screen on a laptop?

Answer»

when i turn on my computer (laptop), i get a black screen and also: press to resume. to setup, when i press any buttons, nothing happensThe blackscreen with F1, F2 option usually(which i've had recently with my SIS laptop) comes or came from :
1. Previous undetected/error devices upon BOOTING
a. Battery is reinserted which made the CMOS/BIOS reset on booting the system.
b. Faulty or loose CABLE, network/wireless card, RAM modules on slot/s.
c. Any hardware changes from laptop which the system is not recognized on booting.
(Note: My opinion is just base on my recent work on the laptop and your issue may vary)
Have you had any SIMILAR or familiar on these issues?i think my problem is with the bios. my laptop isn't reading the cd drive. which has my recovery disk. but i can't get into it, to see what drive it is reading.Try removing the cd(recovery disc) first when booting even on a blackkscreen mode. There's nothing else you can do in that state. And see what gives... after rebooting. Try tapping F8 or go into BIOS setup(even on blackscreen) while booting to change or set first default settings. You might hit something to be able to boot while doing this. If it persist, we may need some info. about any previous events that led to this.thank-you jason for your help, i tried everything and nothing worked. i called someone and they said my hard drive is gone. Not sure how they would know that over the phone...But Best of Luck...Quote from: patio on September 09, 2010, 02:47:25 PM

Not sure how they would know that over the phone...But Best of Luck...
Not only that, but a bad hd would not keep you from being able to boot to the cd drive.they did come and look at it. sorry, wasn't over the phone. but thanks for the heads up, i am going to make sure they know what they are talking about. Good enough...Hi: I'm not sure what you mean by "nothing happens". If the screen stays black, but you hear the usual whirring and clicking, you could be having a problem with the screen. I had this problem once. There is a little button, like the one in your refrigerator, that cues the light in the screen. Otherwise it is black. On my HP laptop, that button is in the upper right corner, on the border around the keyboard. Once I had a laptop and this button had lost its oomph. It just wouldn't come up so the computer thought it was always closed and the screen was black. When they fixed the button everything went back to normal.

Just an idea than-you for the idea. i checked this and that little pin is working properly.

Solve : win xp problem v. hard drive or other?

Answer»

I have been working on a problem for about a week and making very little progress. I have a desktop pc that I bought used about a year ago. Processor is Celeron 2G; running winxp sp2 and I have no current windows disk w/sp2. To be honest, I mainly use this computer as a sort of "hub" that I plug my printer and wireless into or use when I have a problem with my laptop. Anyway, last week it quit booting windows. Could not go back to "last known good configuration". When I tried to run in "safe mode", I get a screen that has these three lines"

"multidisk(0)rdisk(0)partition(0)ntoskrnl.exe"
" " " hal.dll
" " " kdcom.dll

I finally "bungled" my way into booting from a puppy linux cd. My main question is this: how can I determine whether the problem is with winxp or the hard drive (or some other possibility). What other trouble-shooting should I do? When I boot up w/puppy, I can mount the "c" drive but do very little with the files.

I'd appreciate any help. As you can probably tell, I not a real novice, but not really experienced with this aspect of comuters. Quote from: kayl on September 12, 2010, 06:52:56 AM

When I boot up w/puppy, I can mount the "c" drive but do very little with the files.
You can "do very little with the files" because the hard drive is not responsive or because you're not very familiar with Linux? If you can mount the drive and see files on it, that's indicates the hard drive is apparently OK.

You could contact HP and see whether they have a system restore disc for that model computer. If they have it, they'll charge a fee for it, which, I believe, would be around $16-$18, depending on shipping cost to your address.

And, if get Windows XP working again, I suggest you download and install SP3. Support for Windows XP SP2 ended July 10, 2010. SP3 will be supported with security patches "and other critical updates" for Windows XP until April, 2014.What I meant about doing very little with the files is that I cannot run .exe files. I installed "wine" and tried to run "chkdsk" but it did not respond. Now I don't know if I an not using wine right or what. I am a total novice with linux; I had never used it before I used puppy. I am able to navigate to and find files and open up some documents.

So you're saying that my hard drive should be OK if I can mount the drive and open documents? That's good. I guess my next step is to try to repair windows or change os to puppy or ubuntu. I'd have to seek help with that, but I'm pretty sure that I could do it.

One possibly important thing that I left out is that my AVG flagged me a day or two before about a "serious" threat. The message said that the threat was blocked, so I did nothing else. Could I possibly have gotten a virus?

Thanks,
KayHi KAY, I'm not sure we can be absolutely sure that your hard drive is not SHOWING signs of failure. So, I suggest you copy your important documents and files to a flash drive or burn them to a CD or DVD if possible. I haven't used the Linux Puppy OS so I'm not sure whether you could burn to disc, assuming you have a CD or DVD drive with burning capability, If you're not familiar with the TERM, "burn", it means to record files to a CD or DVD and requires a CD-R/CD-RW or DVD-R/DVD-RW drive, the letter R meaning Recordable and RW meaning Re-writable.

But, you should be able to copy files to a flash drive by using the file browser in Puppy in the manner Windows Explorer can be used to copy or move files. I have used an Ubuntu live CD to do this but I have never used Puppy. I'm assuming it can be done with Puppy.

You could try installing a Linux OS on the hard drive in a dual-boot configuration. In other words, if Win XP is on drive C, leave it there and use the Linux OS disc to create a new partition for the Linux OS. This way, you can continue to work on solving the problem with Windows but also be able to run the computer under the Linux OS. Of course, as you know, you can run some Linux OS off the CD but this is usually a short-term solution to allow a prospective Linux user a chance to get familiar with Linux before deciding to install it on the hard drive.

If you decide you want to install Linux Puppy, I suggest searching for references on the Internet. Here's one: http://www.ph-islands.net/pupinstall/

Again, regarding Windows, a system disc that would restore the system to it's original configuration can probably be obtained from HP.
Thanks a lot for your help, Soybean. My computer (desktop) is a dell optiplex. Now here's ANOTHER question and I hope it's not too stupid. I have a friend with another Dell running win xp sp2. It's a different model of dell computer, but could I use his recovery/setup cd? Or am I asking for trouble?

That could present some problems due to differences in internal components.

Sorry I mentioned HP since you have a Dell. But, you can probably obtain a recovery disc(s) from Dell for your specific model. That's probably the better approach to dealing with this than trying to use a recovery/setup cd from a different model Dell.

I have GIGABYTE 8915GL-ME motherboard. When i bought newly i INSTALLED xp service pack 2. Recently i Installed windows 7, but i didn't get sound. So again i instaleed the xp sp2. But then also i am not getting sound.
Please Help!!!After INSTALLING an OS you need to INSTALL the chipset driver followed by all other drivers (sound, display, etc). The drivers need to be compatible with the installed OS.
