Solve : Converting from Windows XP Professional 32 bit to Windows XP 64 bit? |
|
Answer» HELLO everyone! My company is CONSIDERING switching from Windows XP 32 bit to Windows XP 64 bit. I need to know if our IMPORTANT software applications that we are running now will run on the 64 bit OS. The important ONES are SPSS 12.0.1, Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard, Adobe Pagemaker 7.0, SNAP 10 Professional, and Microsoft Office. Does anyone know if these will or not work? Thanks! You shouldn't have any problems. The only issues I had when I ran 64 bit were with very old custom designed DOS apps that run on 32 bit but not 64 bit (even in compatibility mode).I have just discovered that we will most likely be switching to Windows 7 64-bit, not Windows XP. Should programs from XP work on Windows 7?Yes... Other than Pagemaker which i have not used and SNAP all those apps run fine on Win7 64Bit...Absolutely. And if there ARE any issues (which I doubt) you can always run in XP Compatibility Mode. Here - run the W7 Compatibility App: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx Thank you for your help! You're most welcome. |

Solve : startup issue? |
|
Answer» as soon as the laptop starts up it says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not restart CORRECTLY. after like 30 seconds it starts loading win xp for a few minutes then goes black. What happened before the problem appeared (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? i'll ask the owner. this is my friend's laptop... Hi, The problem is your laptop BIOS setting. to solve this problem go to BIOS setting,in that Harddisk u select the IDE. By default it will take AHCI which will support for the Sata harddisk. Just change that option with the IDE. your problem will get solve.Ignore the above post and please let me know the answer to my question above.I'm sure that Allan has a great EXPERIENCE. And I advise you to follow up with him But I have a suggestion : try System RESTORE, set it to a date before you started having the problem. or do you have your windows xp cd? if so start windows in safe mode and try this: put your windows XP CD into the cd rom drive and then open up the command prompt (start run cmd) and type sfc /scannow it will scan all major system files and replace them with known good ones (from the CD) after its finished reboot the machine .Quote from: MORO on June 25, 2010, 07:55:25 AM

Solve : Help with XP cd and formatting.? |
|
Answer» I've messed up a few things trying to add new themes and such to my computer and I wanted to format it. I don't have my XP cd and people say you can make them with the i386 folder. I did a search and found that I have 13 different i386 folders so which one do I use?? This is certain to fail...Those who do not try will always fail.Quote from: Dusty on June 26, 2010, 10:13:34 PM Those who do not try will always fail. Many of those who try will also fail, especially if their knowledge is incomplete. Quote from: Salmon Trout on June 27, 2010, 03:42:09 AM Many of those who try will also fail, especially if their knowledge is incomplete. That could be said about our foremost research scientists in any field. But having tried and failed their knowledge level goes up a notch or two. It's almost as important to know that something tried will fail as it is to know it will lead to success. The essential is to try. Quote from: Dusty on June 27, 2010, 03:20:16 PM It's almost as important to know that something tried will fail as it is to know it will lead to success. The essential is to try. That is right, as far as it goes. I read recently (I think it was on Slashdot) that some scientists have said that one reason for humanity's evolutionary success was the fact that we make mistakes. [Edit] It was in Kathryn Schulz's book Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error. "The more scientists understand about COGNITIVE functioning, the more it becomes clear that our capacity to make mistakes is utterly inextricable from what makes the human brain so swift, adaptable, and intelligent." http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/06/20/1722255/Why-Being-Wrong-Makes-Humans-So-Smart However, it would be trivially foolish to suppose, because of that, that every attempt, however misguided, is a noble one that deserves to be made. This exchange started because Patio said that a certain specified method of system restoration was "bound to fail". (This is capable of verification). Then you remarked that "those who do not try will always fail". The language is paradoxical. An unmade attempt, cannot, by definition, "fail" or "succeed". However that is a proverb type "wise" saying with stuff implied that roughly means, if I have it right, "those who do not [ever] try [anything] will always fail [to be successful in life]". It would be nonsense to say that someone "fails" to fix their computer if they don't actually try a half-assed method. This isn't cutting-edge research or trying a new design of spear. It's fixing a computer. The main reason i stated what i did was because i noticed that in fact he does NOT have a legitimate i386 folder which in the process described is actually pretty MUCH important for the procedure to work properly..... I'll stick with my ORIGINAL assessment....Quote from: Patio in Reply #9 The main reason i stated what i did was because i noticed that in fact he does NOT have a legitimate i386 folder which in the process described is actually pretty much important for the procedure to work properly..... Snap!! Quote from: Dusty in Reply #3 TokerxP - HowToHaven shows instructions on how to create an XP Install disk using the C:\I386 folder which does not appear in your list, search again after bulleting "Show hidden files and folders" But enough of this points-scoring exercise. I have not tried the HowToHaven instructions for creating an XP install disk so cannot judge if it is a practical answer, or a half-assed one, to the OP's query but urge him to at least try it as no other possible solution except to format and re-install the OS (which he cannot do DUE to lack of a bootable install cd) has been offered. Sayonara - exit. |

Solve : Hard Drive Space Gone? |

Answer» I have a hard drive that has 71.3 GB of space. Recently, it dived down to 1.05 GB. I found three files in C:\WINDOWS which are very similar. This drive has Windows XP. The three files are: BOOTME32 appears to be a user-assigned name, which explains why you found nothing in your Google search. In other words, Fleexy, or someone using his computer, has created a backup file named BOOTME32.bak.I'm not so sure - there are both a setup information file (bootme32.inf) and a .ini file, which would certainly not be user created. On the other hand, I still have no idea what it is, so anything is possible. |

Solve : Desktop Not Appearing? |
|
Answer» I can't get to my desktop because a program (a Motorola product) won't execute. How can I delete the program if I can't get to the control panel? "Stopping the PROCESS" isn't doing anything.OK,, that message was sent from my phone's internet connection. My desktop is back now. It might not have been the Moto program that was the problem (I suspected it because when I would try to shut down the computer that program wouldn't CLOSE). It might have been a Microsoft Update message that wouldn't open. So, I can't say for sure what cause was, but the question still stands - if your desktop items (icons, start button, etc) don't open, what can you do? You can always try starting Explorer.exe (that's the Windows shell, not to be confused with Internet Explorer's iexplore.exe). |

Solve : What in case if I format my system?? |
|
Answer» Hi Guys! A direct patch of SP3 is possible & will encompass the advantages of former two? This is correct. XP SP3 is a cumulative update of all previous service packs for XP. However, the SP3 installer will look for a previous service pack minimum level SP1 and refuse to install if this is not found. The installer checks the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion to see if has a value greater than or equal to 0x100, if it does it will allow the update to proceed, otherwise it will prompt to install either XP SP1 or SP2. Since SP1 is no longer available for FULL download, it would need to be downloaded using Windows Update. The other option is to manually change the registry key, fool the installer into thinking SP1 is already installed. Thanks Salmon. So you mean that by fooling the installer(as method suggested by you), it is even possible for users of Windows, possessing an 'Illicit/Non-Genuine' copy of Windows OS, to still install SP3? Nevertheless, I do have the CDs of SP1 & SP2 as were shipped free across globe by Microsoft. Windows Update will then fetch me SP3.(Alas, it was not free ) Ofcourse, Iam quite a genuine user. Quote from: Saurabhdua on June 26, 2010, 07:13:06 AM So you mean that by fooling the installer(as method suggested by you), it is even possible for users of Windows, possessing an 'Illicit/Non-Genuine' copy of Windows OS, to still install SP3? I meant that an owner of a legal copy of Windows XP who lacked a previous SP disc could install SP3 using that method. Salmon, Why can't the same method be adopted by the former case? What differentiates the illegitimate copy with a genuine one? SP1 can be installed by both.SP2 & SP3 works only for legitimate users. So, by putting up a HIGHER value of registry what will still remain discreet for a genuine user? Quote from: Saurabhdua on June 27, 2010, 03:35:12 AM Why can't the same method be adopted by the former case? What differentiates the illegitimate copy with a genuine one? Solve : Showing 2 "local area connections"? |
|
Answer» I forgot to first hook the computer up to the internet modem before I went to 'repair' under network connections. I was now able to click on repair. The computer did something and then told me to try to connect to the internet again. It didn't work. The message also told me that "If the problem persists, contact the person who manages your network." I am wondering what network they are talking about? Do they mean the telephone company I get DSL through? Or are they talking about a whole different thing as far as 'network'... Could it be that the person I got the computer from had a few computers hooked to each other and that has something to do with the problem?Call your provider and have them do a line check.... The person I got the computer from erased everything on it including any type of adware or spyware. But they left the OS on it? I want to thank you very, very much Jason for taking so much time to try to help me fix the computer problem. I really appreciate it. I want to thank you as well, PATIO, for your ideas. Wouldn't it have been great if we could have actually gotten the thing to connect? Oh well. The effort was greatly appreciated, though! |

Solve : Unable to Connect/Find Wireless Networks? |
|
Answer» Like the topic says my laptop no longer finds/detects wireless ROUTERS in the area. It was working fine a couple of days ago before it blue screened with a corrupted GDI32.dll file. I replaced it with one off the live CD and EVERYTHING is fine there but now it wont connect. I've tried everything under the sun to fix the issue, short from replacing the onboard hardware and REINSTALLING. Here's a quick list....
So am I forced to reinstall? Or is it possible I can save myself from transferring a 30GB My Documents?Intel wireless? If so the intel wireless app is controlling the adapter. If so it should give you the option to enable the wirelessThanks for the reply but no such folder exists. What's your Startup type default on WZC? |

Solve : Bought new notebook with Windows XP Professional registered to someone else?? |
|
Answer» I bought this HP Compaq 6715b today from a local pawn broker. All the personal files and SOFTWARE were wiped clean so I'm supposedly STARTING with a clean install. But the XP Pro operating system is still REGISTERED with Microsoft in the name of the previous owner. How do I change the registration name with Microsoft? How do I change the registration name with Microsoft? Copies of Windows are not licensed to people, they are licensed to machines. It doesn't really matter what the name says, that name is not actually part of any MS database. The registry edit worked fine. Thanks for the link DarkendHeart! Thanks BC! I guess I was thinking there is some form to fill out requiring the owners name when validating a new install of a Windows operating system. Anyway, even if it makes no difference to Microsoft, I feel better seeing my name as the registered owner so I'm happy now Quote from: lectrocrew on September 26, 2010, 07:21:47 AM Anyway, even if it makes no difference to Microsoft, I feel better seeing my name as the registered owner so I'm happy now I can certainly understand this |

Solve : Windows Memory problem (upgrade problem)? |
|
Answer» Hi, I am having a problem upgrading my memory for my HP Media center PC m7360N. I bought it with 2GB of memory already installed and am trying to install 2 gb's more. I purchased 2 1GB chips PNY PC2-4200 (533MHz) it's also compatible with PC2-3200 (400MHz) when I boot up my BIOS is able to detect the entire 4gb's 1GB each chip.. when I get log on to WINDOWS it can only see 3.5gb's NOTHING more.. I have tried changing order of the chips but can't seem to get it to work.. When I go system information I am told it sees 4GB.. but under system properties or task manager they only are able to see 3.5GB I am trying to get my task manager and system properties to see the rest of the memory.. I was told that my video card may be the problem but I don' think so.. it's a nvidia geforce 9800gt I believe 1GB of memory (can't remember right now) below is a copy of my system information thanks for any help in advance.. 32bit OS is limited to 4GB of RAM. the reason why you can only see 3.5GB RAM is because the rest is being shared with the Video card. You think the system shares 500 mb ram with the video card? Please. The 4Gb limit is optimal - 32 gb systems can see and use about 3.5Gb.Allan- maybe you misunderstood my answer. *32bit OS is CAPABLE of seeing 4gb of installed RAM. (I've seen it under system properties. this varies from vendor) *it will only use from 2gb to 3.6gb because certain devices reserve address space for their use below the 4gb limit *I had 2 1Gb video cards installed on Vista SP1 - these were taking 256MB each consumed 512MB (although this is not the case) *If you really want to go deep into it and look at what's taking the rest of your memory space you can view the devices that do this by opening Device Manager ----->Resources by Connection in View Menu and EXPAND the Memory node. -Bottom line, you are partially right Allan. Windows x86 CAN SEE up to 4gb of installed RAM but it will only use up to 3.6GbAnd there you have it...sigh |

Solve : Enviroment Variables? |
|
Answer» Hi, Moreover there are two entries "TEMP" "TMP" under "System Variables", both pointing to same path "%SystemRoot%\TEMP" or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Is one of them a redundant entry or both are useful. It's historical. GOES back to MS-DOS. Some programs and scripts use the system variable %tmp% to define where to store temporary files. Others use %temp%. So it is useful to have both, and sensible to have them both expand to the same value. If %temp% or %tmp% EXPANDS to nothing (i.e. the variable is not DEFINED) then the current folder is used for temporary files. It has nothing WHATSOEVER to do with file extensions. Files with the extension .tmp or .temp will not be automatically placed anywhere (by what?) Thanks for the correction ST |

Solve : How to back up before moving house?? |
|
Answer» Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my question. With the size of the disk required, is the figures I stated above, mean that the files I have selected to backup, equal approximately 81.5 Gigabytes? Theoretically if you only want to backup 81.5 Gb then an 81.5Gb capacity disk, if such a thing was available, is sufficient but you will know that for some purposes the OS requires at least 15% free space so using a minimum 100Gb capacity disk seems a much better option. Quote from: ImnoGuru The files and programs, size used on my 500 is about 250 Gig, so will I then need at least a 250 Gig hard drive to clone my image? Yes, but if the source disk has more than one partition, you could opt to clone selected partition(s) without making the destination disk bootable thus reducing the required size of the destination disk. There are many options available, perhaps imaging is, for you, a neater solution.1. yes the back up file will use space but usually not as much as normal as it is compressed 2. yes you can teat it as another file you can even UPLOAD it to a ftp (that would take forever, don't do it) 3. It rely depends how big the backup file is if i was you i would use a DVD as it is MUCH bigger 700mb to 3gb (3000 mb) 4. You might want to download a program called "win rar" and you can add it to a archive and split it so it can fit onto a DVD or CD Instructions on how to split backup file (or any file): 1. Download and install winrar http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar393.exe 2. Right click on the back up and click on "Add to archive" 3. Chang the compression method to suite your needs (Store = BIG and FAST....ER. Best = small but slow...er.) 4. Select the split volume to what you want CD/DVD 5. Press ok and it will split the back up into "rar" archives the right size to be wrote to CD/DVD what evenone you picked earlier (one file = one CD/DVD). No need for a third party solution.Thank you Allan, Dusty, brentbmwh and PATIO for your replies. Quote from: Dusty on September 17, 2010, 08:58:12 PM
Dusty led me to a discussion about disk imaging in his post, in fact patio's suggestion there, was for Acronis True Image or Macrium Reflect and with such overwhelming support and recommendations from Allan and patio for them both, I am exploring which I will use. Dusty had also recommended XXClone, so, also a concideration. Wouldn't you know it my 200 Gig external has blown the power supply. (it never rains... It pours!! ) Thank you too Dusty for reminding me of the additional space required. My drive only has the one partition that I know of so all good there I think and once I get a replacement power supply, my 200 external should be OK. I like the idea also though, of having a disk copy for a backup that I can store off site, (just in case), so XXClone maybe what I might use there. That requires me to get a physical hard drive though?, of at least the same size consumed on the current hard drive in my Dell computer? ( So that is about 250 Gig plus 15%= (a silly number) say 300 Gig drive). They dont make one, so a 500 Gig then should do it. brentbmwh, I have winrar already... never used it though. I'll have a play around with that and see where I end up. Thank you for your post on it. It seems easy enough, even ImnoGuru might be able to do that. I wouldn't ordinarily consider it because I know nothing of winrar. I downloaded Macrium reflect so far, so I'll have a go with that one first. Thank you all, I will do a bit of work on these suggestions and LET you know how it turns out. (Should go well... I have good instructors hehehe.) |

Answer» I have recently run in to this ERROR message. I get it on a Acer laptop about 3 to 4 years old. The OS is Windows XP MCE. I only RECEIVE this error message when I try to connect to the internet via the wireless option. When I am hardwired to the internet modem from Comcast I can connect with no problem. I was using IE8 and switched over to FireFox which I have been using for a long time. |

Solve : windows fails to open? |

Answer» I have a 5year oldDell Inspirion 2200 laptop, Operating system XP. It was working fine until I received an update Service pack 3. I already had sp3 so don't know why it wanted to update, but it did. The update failed and computer froze. Now the computer goes to opening screen for windows then goes black after 60 seconds. I can not get to a c prompt. I do not have a restore disc for operating system as it came preloaded. Is there anything I can do?I SUGGEST you borrow an XP sp3 disc from someone and do a repair install (it must be the same version of XP as is currently installed).Quote from: Allan on September 19, 2010, 06:57:48 AM I suggest you borrow an XP sp3 disc from someone and do a repair install (it must be the same version of XP as is currently installed).[suggestion removed]brentbmwh, We do not condone illegal acts that could POTENTIALLY get our users into trouble.is that illegal? i thought it only was if you use a illegal keyIn a sense, yes, it is considered illegal because it is not an authorized copy. If one has a legitimate license key, they are not likely to get in trouble, but it is still frowned upon here. But more importantly, an unauthorized download could very well have been tampered with, which could result in software issues or perhaps even infection. When dealing with a gray area such as this, 'tis best to err on the side of caution. If the OP can't obtain a CD, it would be best to contact Microsoft or Dell.ok im sorry, i did not know that. i will take note, THANKS |
