I have a subfolder entitled MP3 which holds all the music that I have in my Itunes folder in no particular order.
There a few thousand TITLES in there and what I WANT to do is PUT them in alphabetical order by artist and SAVE them to a new folder called MP3alpha. When I sort it alphabetically from the MP3 folder and copy to the MP3 alpha, it copies it without the sort (in the original format).
I am simply opening the MP3 and displaying ARTIST and then sorting.
How do I get this to work properly?
Thanks so much!With Windows Explorer you have to sort each time (which certainly is not a big deal). There are Explorer replacements that will "remember" individual folder SETTINGS. I use Directory Opus. It is NOT cheap, but it IS great.You are trying to get it to be in alphabetical order in terms of the artist?
Click on the Artist label, and they should sort.

Hi....i have read many many articles from internet about how to start up computer running windows XP
home edition. I also read in here on how to boot up or start up computer using CD.

Well..my computer now having error like below...

Invalid Boot.ini

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.

My Question are
1.) how to boot or startup xp without need use CD ?
I know here ALREADY have the article explain how to create startup disk..so what is the different
between 6 startup disk from microsoft and the one we just copy 3 files(boot.ini, Ntldr and Ntdetect.com) ?
Does this 2 type startup will boot to run windows or just command prompt ?

2.) Lets say if the above 2 type startup disk able to launch windows, then...can i use system restore to restore
my problem ?

3.) I do read how to make bootable live CD something call BartPe. I wonder why when i set in bios boot from
CD...the bartpe won't run ? why ?

4.) I have 1 floppy disk which formatted use xp system and i create ms DOS startup inside. I insert inside computer it startup to A:\ .
When i try switch to hard drive ( c:\ ) it only can access the drive but cannot read whatever inside it why....?
in only show my hard drive contain FOLDER

Im afraid that your windows is corrupted and hence i would recommend you to do a complete clean install of windows or else what you can do is to just try to setup the windows without formatting the drive

After installing Windows XP, you may get the following error:
Error loading operating system.
This is because the AwardBIOS has been set to ACCESS the disk improperly, CAUSING the system to halt. This is specific to AwardBIOS's.
Go into Setup using DELETE.
Go to BIOS Features or something
Select the HD you are installing to
Change the access type to "LBA"
Press F10, Y, Enter/Return
Re-install XP

I recently had to install a new copy of windows XP SP3. I re-installed i-tunes to manage our i-pods and i-phones. When I tried to update i-tuens to v9.2 it says the windows installer isn't working properly and will not proceed. I went to the microsoft site and downloaded the latest windows installer but am having the same issues. Any suggestions???

STEP 1: Unregister and reregister Windows Installer

1. To do this, follow these steps:
2. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
3. Type msiexec /unreg, and then press ENTER. This unregisters Windows Installer.
4. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".
5. In the "Open" box, type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

If this doesn’t help, proceed with the remaining steps.

Step 2: Empty user and system "TEMP" folders.

1. Empty "%systemdrive%\temp" folder.

2. Empty "%systemdrive%\%windir%\temp" folder.

3. Empty "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp".


Step 3: Put your system in clean boot state and run the installation.
Please REFER this article for details on how to achieve this.

Clean boot is one of the methods to CHECK whether a third party application is conflicting with Windows that can contribute to the problem mentioned.

Coming to game installation issues, ensure that you have met the minimum system requirements to play the game, most importantly the graphics card as you’ve reported black screen during installation.

Either you don’t have a driver that’s perfect for Windows 7 or the Card itself isn’t compatible. There have been reports of the same issue with many graphics card and the possible solution has been downgrading the graphics card driver for many.

You may as WELL try to run the installation in compatibility mode and initiate the installation.

as soon as the laptop starts up it says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not restart CORRECTLY. after like 30 seconds it starts loading win xp for a few minutes then goes black.

if i try and enter safemode it shows a lot of driver files but never loads "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\sr.sys but many other drivers too... ksecdd.sys mup.sys volsnap.sys....etc etc and it just STAYS like that

is there a way to fix the problem without deleting all of the files inside?

try System Restore, set it to a date before you started having the problem.

do you have your windows xp cd?
if so start windows in safe mode and try this:
put your windows XP CD into the cd rom drive and then open up the command prompt (start run cmd) and type sfc /scannow

The OP cannot get into Windows to run sfc /scannow, and even if he could there's no reason at this point to believe there is a problem with a Windows file. Again, let's find out what led up to this.

I've messed up a few things trying to add new themes and such to my computer and I wanted to format it. I don't have my XP cd and people say you can make them with the i386 folder. I did a search and found that I have 13 different i386 folders so which one do I use??

Time to format and reinstall the OS.TokerxP - HowToHaven shows instructions on how to create an XP Install disk using the C:\I386 folder which does not appear in your list, search again after bulleting "Show HIDDEN files and folders". The instructions probably only apply to an XP system which was pre-installed by the vendor (Dell, HP etc), you don't give any info about your hardware. Please read the instructions carefully especially the Prerequisites and Important Note.

I have not had occasion to use these instructions.

Last month at boot up I GET the message that the operating system could not be loaded. I investigated and found that the BIOS was trying to boot off of the data drive. I changed the boot priority and it was fine.

This month the same thing happened again.

Nothing has been done to the hardware of SOFTWARE, why does this spontaneously happen? Anyone have any ideas?

I have a hard drive that has 71.3 GB of space. Recently, it dived down to 1.05 GB. I found three files in C:\WINDOWS which are very similar. This drive has Windows XP. The three files are:

BOOTME32.bak (45.8 GB) [4/6/2010 10:22 AM]
BOOTME32.inf (4.1 GB) [4/6/2010 10:39 AM]
BOOTME32.ini (16 KB) [4/6/2010 10:40 AM]

These all appear to be blank. They are not on the computer I am posting this from. Can I delete them? I don't think Windows needs files these big to BOOT...can you list the contents of the ini FILE?It appears to be blank in Word and Notepad.I don't KNOW what those files are, but you can always delete a file with a .bak extension. I always have this one problem with my gaming computer, you see the router is in the last room along with the modem. Now I have a macbook and an HP pavillion zd7000 and MOSTLY every time i get a new GAME for my destop pc It tells me i need internet and i'm TIRED of talking the case to the other room. I was wondering is it possible to use the Hp laptop (which has a broken SCREEN) to get the internet using the airport and then transferring in through somehow to the destop computer, so that the destop can have internet without leaving my room. Both the destop and the laptop are running windows xp SP3.

I can't get to my desktop because a program (a Motorola product) won't execute. How can I delete the program if I can't get to the control panel? "Stopping the PROCESS" isn't doing anything.OK,, that message was sent from my phone's internet connection. My desktop is back now. It might not have been the Moto program that was the problem (I suspected it because when I would try to shut down the computer that program wouldn't CLOSE). It might have been a Microsoft Update message that wouldn't open. So, I can't say for sure what cause was, but the question still stands - if your desktop items (icons, start button, etc) don't open, what can you do? You can always try starting Explorer.exe (that's the Windows shell, not to be confused with Internet Explorer's iexplore.exe).

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then under the "Applications" tab, press "New Task..."

Type in: explorer.exe
Press the "OK" button or press ENTER

That will usually cause the desktop and taskbar to load if the computer isn't locked up doing something else. If it starts happening again though, it could be a symptom of a worse problem.And of course you can always boot to safe mode.Hi,

a). Turn on your computer and keep on pressing F8 key from your keboard.
b). Select Safe Mode With Networking.

When I first signed up for Road Runner I had Norton security. When my subscription ran out I stared using the internet security Road Runner provides free, CA (Computer Associates). Road Runner SAID it was just as good, and free. It is NOT just as good and caused me A LOT of problems. Since I switched to Microsoft Essentials, which is also free, I only had trouble with the desk top not appearing once, and the Motorola product shut down right away when I tried to close it from the Task list.have you try use system restore to restore back ?I was told "System Restore" would wipe out all my personal files, my games, everything that didn't come pre-installed. I would never use it!

Skpe was working now it isn't. HAPPENED after a Trogan Worm. Re installed all the drivers thought it was fixed, used the speech recognition to do up papers, tested Skype with the Echo test seemed fine, tried call YESTERDAY couldn't HEAR me again, now speech recognition isn't working again. I've re installed Skype, tried different MIC, checked all settings, followed guidelines in Skype help, SEEMS to me perhaps the Virus isn't completely gone for it to keep causing trouble, help would be appreciated. Currently, Iam on Windows XP,SP3.If in case I choose(or rather being compelled for any untoward reason) to format my machine, do I have to be sequential in putting up Service Packs like 1>>2 & 3?

A DIRECT patch of SP3 is possible & will encompass the advantages of former two? To avoid having to install the OS then add SP.3 then update with all the hotfixes etc since SP.3 you should slipstream SP.3 and subsequent updates to one disk. Lots of info here..

So you mean that by fooling the installer(as method suggested by you), it is even possible for users of Windows, possessing an 'Illicit/Non-Genuine' copy of Windows OS, to still install SP3?

Hello, sorry if this post is supposed to be SOMEWHERE else.

I have a hand-me-down hp pavilion a1328x, upgraded to 2gb ram, came with integrated ati radeon xpress 200 graphics, and windows xp mce 2005. I replaced the hard drive and instead of using the manufactures restore disks, i used a plain windows xp mce 2005 disk. I went straight to the hp website and installed all the drivers: video, firmware, bios, everything they listed. I installed all the microsoft updates including sp3. I installed ff3, openoffice, livestation (an internet streaming tv app), and itunes. NOTHING CRAZY.

The crashes (blue screen and restarts) happen at SEEMINGLY meaningless times, like when i click on a different tab in my browser, or sometimes when i click on any other program to open it. At times it is so bad that I cannot open a second tab in a browser - this is in both ie8 and ff3.

I repeated the complete reinstall of the os MORE THAN SEVERAL times and finally ordered the hp recovery disks. The same thing happened again. I repeated the hp recovery but this time i chose the option where it was supposed to leave my personal data and just return the system to factory conditions. Then i just did the Microsoft updates and installed no other apps. i noticed that ff3 was still there and didn't get removed. Made it a whole day without a crash, then just now i clicked on ff3 to open it - and it crashed

Now i am wondering if next i should do another hp recovery, but wipe the drive completely to get rid of ff3, then wait another week before installing each app??? My gut tells me that nothing this bad could be happening because of ff3. Do you think i could have some hardware problem? bad ram? bad video card? monitor problem?? I did the hardware test that came with the recovery. I think it was pc doctor 5 or something like that. It tested the ram, and a couple other things (sorry cant remember). Could some of the ms updates be doing this? should I try without sp3?

Any suggestions??

It looks to me, you have RAM issues.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:



8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:



10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:




It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

I do remember now, that when i put the two new ram sticks in, it wouldn't boot, the screen came up techno-color. I pulled them out and re-inserted them and the problem went away. I thought i just didn't get them in all the way but maybe one is bad.... This was over a year ago, I have been running Ubuntu since then and never had the crashes. but recently i switched back to xp and the problem started.

Let me know...OK so I ran it for a bit longer than they recommended.

stick one: 11 passes, 1 error
Stick two: 15 passes, 6 errors (all on pass 12)

The instructions said even one error means I have bad ram, but is it possible that if you run the test long enough an error will eventually occur?

What do you think, should I buy new ram?Try running computer on 1 RAM stick at a time, for a day, or so and see, if it'll BSOD.

I have a new iTouch, which is FINE, I am just having a very, very bad experience of iTunes., in fact so bad it may go back to apple soon and I shall dust off my old Creative Zen

The Problem:

When I try to sync any music, audio book or photos, the message comes up:

" iPod cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found" and nothing is synced,

It syncs my contacts and calendar from Office Outlook fine, and the alarm works on the appointments.


I think I have tried just about everything, I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, done the WHOLE Restore option in ITunes.. run the Diagnostics and all passes fine. I have searched the form and found another answer mentioning security issues, but mine have not changed. It is not the compatibility of photos or DRM with the music, I have tried a single music file (of my own song) and a single compatible photo.

Googled the darn problem and there seem to be as many differing VIEWS on the problem as there are computers out there, from my hard drive being screwed (which it is not) to a registry file missing.. Tried all but…..

Well if anyone can come up with an answer they can expect a very large thank you!!!

Are you sure iTunes settings has the right location for your music folder?
Have you tried posting your problem on the Apple support forum? I've had good success there.How would i check that Allan? And YES I have popsted on the Apple forum, but no repsones so far...In iTunes click on EDIT - PREFERENCES - ADVANCED and look at the location of the default iTunes Media Folder Location. Also, does iTunes show all of your music? And when you try to play a song by double-clicking on the name of a song does it actually play or do you get a message saying it can't find the file?All is in place. Followed the path in explorer and it is indeed full of my music. And yes the music plays fine when double clicked.

I did though COPY and past my somewhat large music collection onto iTunes, not all at once but about 20 files at a time, rather than the rather laborious file/add music method. It worked fine except for some of the albums for some reason in grid layout show the artwork of the album against each individual track.

Erm i have a problem here,my Acer Aspire E500 can't reformat,as in when it startup,i pressed ALT +F10,then type the password,then through factory default,then after that it started destroying the partition,but on the exact percentage,86%,it will cancel,and reboot it,then after that i can't even get to windows,then i repeat the steps for the restoring factory settings for my computer,then found out that the bootsector wrotes that it contains VIRUS.
Basically,what I'm trying to say is,the factory recovery has a virus on it and doesn't allow me to reformat it.
So when i cancel everything,then it reboots again,but then can't go to windows,just gave me lots of codes...

Also the chances of your Recovery partition getting infected are about as slim.
You need to either explain the circumstances of getting infected and/or borrrow a legit XP CD to facilitate a clean install...What do you mean by no longer exist?You mean my machine is old?Where can I get a legit XP CD?I didn't mention anything about your machine being old at all...
What i meant to say was that whoever planted the IDEA that you have a bootsctor virus is talking about something that's about 20 years old and rarely is seen these days...
As far as getting a Windows CD any PC shop will have them...or if you are a Student they can be had at the school bookstore for a substantial discount...Hey!I found a solution,just to share with you,my computer was running 512MB of RAM at default,before the problem happens,I brought 2GB of RAM(each 1GB on each socket).
But few days LATER,problem came,then all I did was,remove one of the 1GB ram and run the recovery.

yes, i reinstalled a unworking comp. Purchased second hand.

I installed windows xp home edition service pack 1 (genuine cd i have had for ages), by booting from the cd.

I do have other computer cds but i have tried them and i dont believe they are for this comp, some actually say for win 95/98, so they prob should go in the bin.

The comp model is a DELL optiplex GX620, thats what it says on the machine

You could download the recommended drivers for your Dell Optiplex GX620 computer on the Dell link/website. However, do you still have any service tag(sticker) on the desktop? It will prompt you for it so it will give you the appropriate drivers. I assume you cannot connect to the internet(or do you have?), so you might have to download and save them on a flash drive on another computer and just copy them to your Dell computer and install them. I do have the internet working. I tried to download a chipset using my service tag on computer.

However the dell download manager had to be installed first?

I forgot to first hook the computer up to the internet modem before I went to 'repair' under network connections. I was now able to click on repair. The computer did something and then told me to try to connect to the internet again. It didn't work. The message also told me that "If the problem persists, contact the person who manages your network." I am wondering what network they are talking about? Do they mean the telephone company I get DSL through? Or are they talking about a whole different thing as far as 'network'... Could it be that the person I got the computer from had a few computers hooked to each other and that has something to do with the problem?Call your provider and have them do a line check....

Like the topic says my laptop no longer finds/detects wireless ROUTERS in the area. It was working fine a couple of days ago before it blue screened with a corrupted GDI32.dll file. I replaced it with one off the live CD and EVERYTHING is fine there but now it wont connect. I've tried everything under the sun to fix the issue, short from replacing the onboard hardware and REINSTALLING. Here's a quick list....

• CONNECTING straight to the router and updating drivers(Latest drivers installed)
  
• Uninstalling drivers and manually getting the latest drivers from the Dell website(failed with an error stating it couldn't install on this system when it's the exact card it was designed for)

I backed up the files from the root directory (which was just C:\) onto an external HDD, but now I can't view and access those files from the newly installed winXP (Home Edition).
I know it has something to do with the permissions, but don't know exactly what. On winXP Pro I was just able to go to folder properties and select the Permissions tab, but with Home Edition it's different.

Some one recommended me the DOS command CACLS, but with that I managed to only get access to the root folder, all of the subfolders are still locked.
When I try to still get permissions to the subfolders it tells me that access is denied.

How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP

Prerequisites

Log on as an administrator

The title may be misleading. I know there isn't a variable to "My documents".
That's why I need a way around it. Some of us know that the location of "My documents" is stored into the register:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
more specific into the value "Personal"

Well using this I exported the key above (*\Shell Folders) into a .txt which works like a charm.
REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" "test.txt"

The problem is that is shows all the values in "Shell Folders"
I only need the text after "Personal"= *Path I need*
then I could set in to a variable %MYDOCPATH% or something and I could use that into the bat I'm making to copy stuff into "My Documents"

Could ANYONE help me isolate the path (in a bat file) I need and find a way to set it as a variable.

ps: I using WinXP home edition atm but the registry key is the same on every Windows PC (2000, XP, Vista and Win7)Don't bother using REQ EXPORT and a text file. For one thing, you need the batch to be on a writeable volume, and also you'd be creating filesystem clutter. Better to use REQ QUERY and parse the output with FOR /F

I am using a XP 32 SP3 PC and for a couple of weeks I have been unable to connect to torrentz.com website, and only this site! I have tried IE, Firefox and opera and no joy. My connection to the net is FINE and STRANGELY enough i can connect to torrentz.com using my Vista 32 LAPTOP without a problem. Any IDEA as to what the might be going on? I have checked the system out using MBAM paid version and my anti virus ESET NOD32, and super anti spyware pro version and NOTHING has shown up.

Is that even possible using MS DOS boot disks(or whatever)? The pc got hit with something that wiped the "Restore" function and blacked out the monitor. So, even though I am running I want to nuke this bug. Anything NEW is on stick....and I did a backup to stick.

Last time I did this PC lasted 3 or 4 years.
I used a converter to change from FAT32 to NTFS no problemSo you want info on how to "nuke" the HDD and install Win98 on it...correct ? ?Yeah. And I just REALIZED that the backup is just as "sick" so basically would give me what I got now(which is NOT what I want.
I don't need to use the backup as I have everything(my files) stored seperately as well.
But I just don't know about this NTFS thing and whether it will allow me to format in MSDOS to "start again". I have nothing to lose on the PC.

As far as I understand it, that is the guaranteed way to get rid of any viruses, bugs or other. I know it is a lot of loading but I am on extended leave and am twiddling my thumbs.

Like I said before, I need to go the Win98 loading route and I do not know of another way to force the computer backwards(as I have some weird drivers which there is no upgrade from...and they are on Win98 TYPE discs.
The computer keeps telling me that and won't touch them. Probably because they are in FAT32?

If I knew, I would not need to ask for some assistance.

You have to fdisk before format: delete non-DOS partition, then create DOS partition, then format.You may or may not need it, but check the stick manufacturer's website for drivers for Windows 98. While XP includes a driver that will allow most any flash drive to work with it, Windows 98 doesn't.



On a side note, I SPENT an hour on the phone the other night walking a guy through this. He knew nothing about computers and couldn't get his PNY flash drive to work on a 98 system. Downloading the driver from PNY fixed the problem. The hour it took was mostly me trying to explain to him how to install the driver manually as it didn't come with an executable.

Hi, I am having a problem upgrading my memory for my HP Media center PC m7360N. I bought it with 2GB of memory already installed and am trying to install 2 gb's more. I purchased 2 1GB chips PNY PC2-4200 (533MHz) it's also compatible with PC2-3200 (400MHz) when I boot up my BIOS is able to detect the entire 4gb's 1GB each chip.. when I get log on to WINDOWS it can only see 3.5gb's NOTHING more.. I have tried changing order of the chips but can't seem to get it to work.. When I go system information I am told it sees 4GB.. but under system properties or task manager they only are able to see 3.5GB I am trying to get my task manager and system properties to see the rest of the memory.. How is that any folder in C:\Documents and Settings\Appu can opened by just typing folder name in the Run (Win+R) window. How is that possible ? I would like to set this behavior for other folders too which are under some other folder not necessarily located in C:\Documents and Settings\Appu. Pls explain specifically how this above concept works.

I know that such settings are RELATED to setting "Environmental Variables" but I not sure abt the concept as to how that works.

Moreover there are two entries "TEMP" "TMP" under "System Variables", both pointing to same path "%SystemRoot%\TEMP" or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Is one of them a redundant entry or both are useful.

I foolishly downloaded a piece of software called 'Free IMAGES Viewer' last WEEK, in hope of dealing with an issue with CYMK images. It was not a useful fix, and I quickly uninstalled the software.

UNFORTUNATELY, it had already changed the type of _all_ my images such that my computer doesn't know how to display or open them.

I have enough PC know-how to get them opened with another programme, but what I really need to work out is how to restore their original file-types.

When I bring up properties on an image, instead of the "Type of file" field reading ".jpg" (for example) it says "FreeImagesViewer.jpg" (ditto .gif files, etc.). That seems to be how it is convincing the computer this is an unknown file type.

Can anyone help? I hope I've picked the correct section of the Forum.To clarify:

When browsing folders through My Documents, etc. , I can't view the thumbnail images, though they do appear in the bottom left viewing pane. Some icons have also been affected on the desktop, in the programme MENU, etc.

If I am inserting an image into a Word DOCUMENT (for example), the pictures do appear correctly when I'm browsing.Nothing has been changed except the association to which program is opening them. When I switch on my desktop computer I see the Windows XP screen with the blue dots moving to the right. Then this screen CLEARS and all I get is a blue screen with an hourglass in the centre. No welcome screen appears and nothing further happens.

I may have caused the problem, as after shutting down in the normal way I inadvertantly switched off at the mains just before the computer shut down?

Can anyone help please?I'd give these a shot...

1. When you get to the blue screen with the hourglass does the mouse work? Try a CNTRL+ALT+DEL to see if maybe the CPU is at 100% or something.

2. Hit F8 and get into SAFE mode and see if you get the same problem in safe mode.

3. Try RUNNING a repair installation -- maybe your shutting XP down IMPROPERLY cause corruption.Ignore the above post for now.

Boot to your XP CD and CHOOSE the FIRST repair option. That will take you to the recovery console. Once there, run chkdsk /r

I was wondering if there is a way to share an application over a LAN using only the tools that WINDOWS XP provides? Is there a third party application that would give me this functionality at a very low cost (free would be GREAT).You mean install an app once on PC1 and then have PC2 and PC3 still be able to use the same app?

I never tried this so it might not work but you CAN try creating a local user account on PC1 where the app is and create share out the .exe. Have PC2 and PC3 connect to the share via UNC and ENTER the local user credentials.

That or try setting up RDP to PC1.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my question.

I am going to move my computer to another location, eg another State and new house.

I want to do a complete back up before the move just in case of a failure during or after the move.

My Dell computer has a 500 Gig drive, of which about 160 to 180 Gig is used. Now obviously that is not all data but programs and data.

I have run through the backup facility in XP SP3 and set it to put the backup on the desktop.
The backup program tells me there is 81,576,577,488 bytes to process.

1. Will a back up to desktop use additional space on my drive?
2. Can I transfer that file to another source, say a CD Data disk?
3. Will I be able to put my backup on just one disk?
4. If there are more than one disk required how do I continue with the data transfer to the second and third disk and so on?

5. AM I DOING THIS THE RIGHT WAY or is there an easier way to do it please?

For me, and I emphasize that this is a personal choice, the easiest way is to clone the source disk to another disk which also becomes bootable thereby having two "identical" disks which can be booted. The destination disk can be removed and wrapped in cotton-wool for the trip.

I use XXClone. It comes with comprehensive instructions and can make the destination disk bootable. The destination disk does not need to be the same size or larger than the source but must be big enough to contain all the data/program files/system files being transferred.

Cloning software may be freely available on your hard disk manufacturer's web site.

I will have a look around now that I have a bit more direction on what I might need to do for my computer/s. ( I use 4 computers mostly ). Maybe a licensed software for a few computers would be best for me.

I play a lot of hidden object games of which BIG Fish Games has many. I can not download big fish games however, as they freeze my PC everytime. I can download from most any other games and have no problem. My windows XP is running with service pack 3. My friend has the exact same operating system and the exact same problem.
I have tried contacting Big Fish support but no luck there either. I would really like to play these games, can anyone suggest what might correct the problem?

most freegames.com. These games are a full version download with ads or you can BUY them as well. My PC is Windows XP,Home with service pack 3. Celeron (R) CPU 2.40 GHz. 512 megabites of ram.

Like I was saying before, I can download and play any other hidden object game as long as it has nothing to do with " big fish" I hope the computer info provided is sufficient,

I'm guessing your processor and OS are fine but it could be a RAM or VIDEO card problem. I'm guessing again that if you only have 512 MB of RAM you probably only have 64 MB of on board video RAM, and that's not enough for some games.Hi

Hi I have a gateway w340ui it has crashed and I wanted a boot RECOVERY disc the PC did not come with anything. THOUGH i'd find a nice ap and burn it to a CD and I'd be good.

Second, why don't you tell us what the problem is and perhaps we can help.You might be able to boot to a Linux live CD, but that will only allow you read/write access to your DRIVE and that might not be enough to fix your problem.

ThanksPower supply might be weak. USB devices are powered off of computer power supply. What happens when you plug other USB devices in?

You could also be hitting a general protection fault causing a hard crash reset, although those are more common with the earlier windows versions such as 95 and Me. Have you checked the system log under system management event viewer to see if windows shows any reason for this?

I have recently run in to this ERROR message. I get it on a Acer laptop about 3 to 4 years old. The OS is Windows XP MCE. I only RECEIVE this error message when I try to connect to the internet via the wireless option. When I am hardwired to the internet modem from Comcast I can connect with no problem. I was using IE8 and switched over to FireFox which I have been using for a long time.

I have gone in triple checked the wireless settings and even updated the drivers thinking that might be the problem. I have also cleaned the REGISTRY with PC Tolls Registry Mechanic and cleaned up 312 errors. Still no go. The system shows the laptop connected with strong reception, but still no go. I have also defraged the hard drive as well.

I did add new Norton Internet security and have triple checked the settings which appear to be fine.

I am beginning to think that the Broadcom 802.11g modem might be bad but under devices it says that it is operating OK.

ThanksIf you have made several CHANGES such as settings or defaults, added any software before this occured then you might want to undo those changes. Check also on any hotspot areas if it can connect to the internet via wi-fi.

I have a 5year oldDell Inspirion 2200 laptop, Operating system XP. It was working fine until I received an update Service pack 3. I already had sp3 so don't know why it wanted to update, but it did.
