Solve : Xcopy - how do I avoid the file or directory prompting? |
Answer» There were earlier posts on ways you can avoid the question as to WHETHER you are copying a file or directory by using the \I parameter or PUTTING a backslash after the destination directory and this works fine if your answer is directory, but how do you indicate that you are copying a file? I would SUGGEST that you rephrase your question. Make shorter sentences. I would suggest that you rephrase your question. Make shorter sentences. I'm guessing the requirements for the grammar police have been dumbed down again. Pretty soon I'll be able to join the force. |

Solve : can you help with this - hard drive full??? |
Answer» I have a Compaq laptop (Presario) that's a few years OLD. It runs Windows XP. A relative gave it to me when they got a NEW computer. My problem is that it says the drive is full even though there doesn't seem to be enough tuff for it to be full. Disk defragmentation also helpful for u!No, it isn't. Defragmenting has nothing to do with space issuesGo to C:\windows. Look for the folder servicepackfiles. Delete the folder. If you are worried about needing this at some point just back up to a DVD first. Look for some blue folders labeled $NtUninstall or similar. If your computer has been running stable for the last few weeks and you don't plan on uninstalling your service pack, then delete all these folders. *Hint* If you don't know what service pack is, then you should delete these folders. Goto the system32 folder. Look for the folder drvstore (should be blue). If you don't have any problems with drivers, then delete it. There are also many guides to GAINING space on drive C: http://helpful.knobs-dials.com/index.php/DLLCache http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showforum=68 *Note* If you ever plan on reinstalling windows, I recommend you use MicroXP. Buy a windows licence. Install MicroXP. Copy the licence into the MicroXP installation. Now you will have a windows folder of about 250MB (400MB with all drivers and software installed). |

Solve : a white space in defragged drive? |
Answer» Hello this white space is not swap-file. it's free space. It was, and now it's not. Windows fragments the instant you exit Defrag. It could also be space marked as "bad" or unusable. Try this one: http://www.piriform.com/defragglerSo it's free space. Unless your defrag utility has an option to consolidate free space there's nothing you can do - nor is it important.I haven't used the standard Disk defragmenter in Win XP for quite a long time but doesn't it have a color code guide at the bottom of the Disk defragmenter panel whch tells you what the colors represent? Quote this white space is not swap-file. it's free space. And how do you know this ? ? Different apps may show it differently...Try defraggler as Computer_Commando recommended. It gives you more information than the standard Windows defrag.NTFS PARTITIONS use a file allocation table called the Master File Table. An NTFS partition keeps a backup copy of the most critical PARTS of the MFT in the middle of the disk. This reduces the chance that a serious drive error can wipe out both the MFT and the backup copy. That small, unmovable chunk in that you see is the backup MFT.Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 21, 2010, 11:02:11 PM NTFS partitions use a file allocation table called the Master File Table. An NTFS partition keeps a backup copy of the most critical parts of the MFT in the middle of the disk. This reduces the chance that a serious drive error can wipe out both the MFT and the backup copy. That small, unmovable chunk in that you see is the backup MFT. Great answer , thanks JJ3000 can you tell more about why: "middle of the disk" is more secure? The white space is not $MFTMIRR (the MFT backup). otherwise it would show up in the unmovable color (not true, actually it doesn't show up at all). Last time I checked NTFS didn't mark it's data structures as free space anyway. That would be pretty stupid. As Allan STATED, unless you have an option like "consolidate free space" selected, the defragmenter is not going to consolidate free space. Therefore you will likely have bits of free space that don't move. Yeah, he's right. Green = unmovable. White = free space. I don't know what I was thinking. It's been a while since I've used the defragmenter. Thanks BC Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 23, 2010, 07:53:29 PM ...Therefore you will likely have bits of free space that don't move. maybe this free space, reserved for windows defragmenter's task. but you can see this free (or white ) space in other free drive. if you search "Diskeeper" or "Defragmenter" in google image, you can see this space be in second cylinder in HDD. OK, if you're using a optimizing type of defragmenter then that would be by design. |

Solve : window initialization error? |
Answer» "window initialization error" What is the program? It is a program that was created for a SMALL group of us internet marketers. I can send you the download link if you want but I can't discuss it on an OPEN forum. It is used to transfer info to a remote server. Well, in that case, why don't you contact program's maker? They have no idea what is causing it on my computer. Because it's my compters fault and not their program. I have used this for months, but now that I got this used computer, somthing is causing it not to start correctly. What is the EXACT error message?"window initialization error" the complete exact error message. And an ok button to make the message GO away.Make sure, your Windows updates are current. |

Solve : Computer not booting from any bootable media? |
Answer» Well my cousin got himself a broadband connection so he asked me to come over to his house and set it up. I hooked it all and it was working fine till Windows XP hung up. So I restarted it. It wont boot now. Just hangs up at'verifying DMI pool data'if I leave it long enough in that condition it says'error in loading OS'.So I got his rescue disc and tried to boot off it. It took longer than usual and then got to a screen where the cursor loads....After that nothing. I even tried the Win XP disc. It does say'press any key to boot from cd'. If I press any key, it just loads a blank screen.Since it POSTs, apparently the mobo and the ROM with bios are alright. If detects bootable disc so cd drive is ok too. Maybe the hdd has gone awry. But even then why'd it not boot off cd. Maybe I should try removing the hdd connectors?I sounds like there might be something wrong in the BIOS. Maybe it is set to boot from LAN. Have you tried entering the BIOS and resetting to defaults? How can anything be wrong with BIOS if it is entering the 'p mode'. You see the bios seeks bootable media, it does find that in CD (set as 2nd boot device) and starts loading it. As I already mentioned the rescue disc (a linux based cd of macrium reflect) boots, loads a graphic screen where I can actually move the MOUSE pointer. The bios most certainly doesn't exercise controls so far. Its role is over after handing over control to a boot sector AFAIK.It sounds like there is a problem with the cd drive or the cd's. Is the XP disc an original, retail copy? If so, and if the system sees it, it should obviously boot to it. The only other possibilities I can think of are ram or the hd. You might want to run a diagnostic on the ram.One of the two XP discs I tried was retail and other was a slipstreamed version with SP3. It has rejected linux bootable discs too. Not apparently the problem with cds. If there was a problem with the drive it would not read it at all or hang up at random points, but this hangs up exactly after an attempt to boot off the cd. I was thinking about the faulty ram too, but it cant be checked cause the pc isn't booting at all. Guess I'm gonna have to take it to a pro.A brand new optical burner is about 30 Bucks shipped and would take 5 minutes to install...Quote Since it POSTs, apparently the mobo and the ROM with bios are alright. If detects bootable disc so cd drive is ok too.Quote How can anything be wrong with BIOS if it is entering the 'p mode'. Quote If there was a problem with the drive it would not read it at all or hang up at random points, but this hangs up exactly after an attempt to boot off the cd. almost all of those assumptions are incorrect, or not entirely accurate. I'm not picking on you here, I just can't figure out why you would be trying to invalidate the advice given using specious arguments. Any problems with the advice given may be due to the seemingly self-contradictory information: Quote I was thinking about the faulty ram too, but it cant be checked cause the pc isn't booting at all. And yet, at the same time, while it isn't booting it all, it boots fine: Quote As I already mentioned the rescue disc (a linux based cd of macrium reflect) boots, loads a graphic screen where I can actually move the mouse pointer. I'm with patio on this one, though. seems like a problem with the the disc drive. Although given the conflicting reports (it both boots fine, while at the same time not being bootable) I'm sort of shooting in the dark here based on the information that it appears to occasionally refuse to boot (you said it boots into some recovery environment disc). Quote If there was a problem with the drive it would not read it at all or hang up at random points Have you dealt with many failed/failing disc drives before? It could very well be a mechanical failure somewhere that affects the Drives compatibility with the El Torito specification. I've had CD-ROM drives that refuse to work at 32x but will read and burn fine at any other speed up to 52x, and other seemingly random weird things occur for other devices. Any computer problem that doesn't have an obvious cause can usually be caused by anything- in this case that includes the cd drive (in fact, given it's seemingly central role in the problem it becomes a prime suspect) Or any number of things, including RAM. RAM is possibly even a greater suspect because the original post makes it SEEM like ti failed to boot to the hard drive (that is, not involving the CD-ROM). But, even then, the computer will, as you yourself state, try booting from the CD-ROM first, so considering all your problems seem to occur during the boot phase, and you haven't yet gotten past the attempt to boot to the CD-Drive (escept in one case where you boot to a disc in the drive) It's not an unreasoned or preemptive hypothesis. What it sounds like you're trying to do is a "theoretical diagnosis" rather then applied diagnosis, by trying to "reason out" exactly what is broken. DESPITE the determinate nature of the machines themselves, sometimes what ails them is not as determinate. You are probably going to have to try replacing a few things until you find the problem component- With most problems, it's usually possible to use good judgment based on the problem to determine what to replace, but there is never a way to be 100% sure that it's the cause- you can know what it probably isn't- for example, if you cannot read floppies, your CD-ROM drive probably isn't involved. But that never rules it out if you end up trying everything else. (taken from my experience, no idea why but whenever I use that CD-RW drive my floppy drive no longer works, it took some figuring). At any rate and given the factor we dont kow the status of these bootdisks i'd say 30 bUCKS IS /WOULD BE A GOOD INVESTMENT...Lol. My bad, i messed up my words. When I said that I cant check the ram by RUNNING any diagnostics cause it doesn't boot, I meant it doesn't boot into any usable user interface. I'd have tried changing the cd drive unless my cousin had called me and told me yesterday that he tried running it again and it booted into XP and after using for sometime, hung up again and was unusable once more. So here we're, its obviously the RAM.As programmer states, theoritical analysis does fail some times, but when you're helping someone over phone or you dont carry your equipment around, thats all you can do. And in most cases the problems are so n00bish they're fixed by it. Tho remember one funny occasion. Every three months I clean up my hdd and reinstall XP (as I dont like the idea of tweaking applications or Anti virus). So at that time i did a clean format and used my recovery disc...The system wont boot. Then I tried installing XP with XP disc. It just wont detect the XP disc as bootable. I suspected the DVD drive to be the CULPRIT. So I tried other discs. And to my horror EVERYTHING else bootable, did boot. Even Windows 98SE. I still decided to replace the optical drive. I had a functional LG DVD writer and a samsung CD reader. The latter had stopped working sometime ago, but as my drive bay was missing I had just let it sit there. So I first removed this cd drive. Something popped in my mind and I tried booting again, now with only the DVD drive connected. The friggin thing booted! I connected it again, and it didn't boot xp as before. I was totally lmao at this. I thought "Hey, I could ship this masterpiece to FSF. RMS is gonna love this windows opposing drive." |

Answer» Ok so I received this Toshiba Laptop that needs drivers. I used Uniblue driver scanner last year but the 2010 edition only scanes for driver updates. I need a driver scanner that will tell me what type of driver I need to download from the program. Is there any program like that. go to the downloads page direct from Toshiba's official website. the drivers toshiba has are bad. not all the drivers are there and some are missing files or damagedI highly doubt it. How do you know? He'sa kidding...right ?im not joking, i went on toshibas web site a found a number for their recovery disk help desk and the guy told me it was $45 because it included the WINDOWS XP installation on it. I asked if i could get a disk with just the drivers and he said I could look on the web site so i told him they were bad and missing and he told me whats there is there he can't do NOTHING about it and then he hung up! Solve : XP Home - Can I delete "Owner" account ?? |
Answer» On my WIFE's PC I had some problems : Ignore this genius above.Actually, I haven't that much time to do much reading about the subject. I have been Googling around but didn't find anyone explaining who actually invented the "Owner" account. Either the native original Xp-Home boys from M$ either the special CD of the OEM version. Anyway I didn't invent or created such a stupid accountname, which causes numerous doubts and troubles , as I see from Google results. Maybe I should decide to try the other way around and try to rename "Owner" to my own account username and use it instead of deleting it. I will be back later. Thank you. While you can rename the default admin account, the name will not change from "owner" in the Documents & Settings FolderThe default administrator account is "administrator" in the documents folder. Quote It is a Dutch version of XP Home where I see account "Eigenaar" for what I suppose is to be seen as "Owner" in the English version).I imagine that this is where the confusion is. Eigenaar is probably used in The dutch version of windows to mean the administrator account, as a localization string. Quote Actually, I haven't that much time to do much reading about the subject. I have been Googling around but didn't find anyone explaining who actually invented the "Owner" account. Either the native original Xp-Home boys from M$ either the special CD of the OEM version. It's the administrator account. You cannot delete it. There is always an administrator account. Therefore, there will always be a profile folder. You delete or rename the folder (I think), but then if you ever want to log in as an administrator you're out of luck since you essentially deleted the profile. Quote We both have a user account. Due to some unknown circumstances, when I was logged on with my own account, everything what was to be stored into Docs & Settings was NOT stored into folder named with my own accountname, but instead was stored to the "Owner" folder. This is because you were logging into the administrator account. Quote
Yes. You may need to reinstall some applications anyway, though, if they were only installed for one user.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 01, 2010, 02:05:27 PM You can't delete the admin folder. But what you CAN do is create another admin account with a name of your choice and copy (or move) everything from the default admin folder to the new oneThank you for your efforts to make me understand this mess a bit BETTER. So far, I have already a much better understanding now. The little attempts made in the mean time confirmed what I learned from here : Account "Eigenaar" (owner) cannot be deleted, but can be renamed. So this must be the Administrator account. My main observations : 1. Creating a totally new independent new user account (I named it "Latest") in addition to my old account, did NOT create a new folder with same name under Docs & Settings ! This was the most surprising. 2. I deleted my old account (the one storing things into folder "Eigenaar") 3. I renamed new user "Latest" to "Myname.PC2". 4. Renamed the old "Eigenaar" to Myname.PC2 as well The new created account is still storing data in the same old "Owner" (now renamed) folder but at least account name and folder in Docs&Sets have identical names. It still remains a puzzle but I will not proceed into further investigation. Thanks to everybody who was helping me. |

Solve : XP not printing jobs queued to network printer whilst print server was down? |
Answer» Hi, Ok - for next time, if I don't reboot the laptop, how would fix it, or copy the spooled files? Unfortunately, the very best you could hope for are driver specific commands in temporary spool files. The idea of the spool is to run the print job through the printer driver, and then "cache" the actual instructions that the driver wants to send to the printer, and send them later when there is time and the printer is available. It doesn't actually store, say, the word document you want to print. |

Solve : toshiba usb 2.0drive ROO? |
Answer» my toshiba usb 2.0 ROO plug in disc drive has stopped booting up. All the folders show up as empty but right clicking on device and then properties shows all the data is still on the driveIf i'm not mistaken it's a DVD drive so it doesn't a) Putting the drive in the freezer under the assumption that it keeps the drive cool enough to prevent the platters from expanding into the read/write head.I've been rather quiet so far when I've seen this mentioned. But truly, it's utter nonsense. First off, it is more likely to cause condensation as the drive is moved from the freezer to a warm environment, which is NOT something you want to encourage. Additionally, if the drive has failed/is failing due to a physical problem such as a head crash or damaged logic board, no solution like this will suddenly change that. And the "the assumption that it keeps the drive cool enough to prevent the platters from expanding into the read/write head." is just correlation. the FACT is, the read/write head floats above the platters on a cushion of air- they aren't "fixed" in position micrometers above the platter. In fact, the read/write heads themselves are "spring-loaded" to "squeeze" the platter; the cushion of air that results from the platter spinning is what causes them to hover over the platters. It won't matter if the platters are slightly bigger or slightly smaller. However, even the mildest shrinking/enlargement of the drive will cause the drive to go through a recalibration phase as it essentially recomputes where all it's tracks are in correspondence with the power to be delivered to the voice coil actuator that positions the read/write head. Back in the days of Stepper-motor driven read/write heads, this was a common point of "failure"- data written at different temperatures could be difficult or impossible to read at another temperature, simply because of the expansion of the track outside the area the stepper motor could read for said track. This was why a Glass substrate was far more common then a metal one in those days, because glass barely expands at all compared to metal (thus why you can run a jar under a hot faucet to remove a particularly stubborn lid). My point? by freezing the drive (while it's off, I assume) when you turn it on, there will be a delay as the drive performs it's recalibration, and it continues to perform it every minute or so as the drive warms up (they generally do so in longer intervals while at a steady temperature). The net effect of this "fix" is therefore more hard drive activity and the data will be even skewed from it's original position. I have no idea how this solves the problem, but thankfully, the voice coil actuator mechanism can go ANYWHERE on the disk, and the thermal recalibration is pretty much the drive finding out where all the tracks and sectors are for the current temperature. How having the drive do this constantly helps, I haven't a clue. maybe the mechanism involved is no longer working for higher temperatures? Incidentally, modern hard disk drives now use fluid bearings which cannot work below a certain temperature. Freezing the hard disk drive below that temperature will actually prevent the drive from running, not restore its operation. Quote I can't confirm whether or not my positive results were simply correlation or that the theory about expanding platters and heat is actually true.I can, it's correlation. the "expanding platters" thing is nonsense- the platters expand and contract with temperature but the drive takes care of it. and it doesn't effect the actual read/write heads at all because their position relies entirely on the cushion of air- they aren't fixed. Quote b) Dropping the hard drive in hopes to loosen the read head or stuck platter.I'd go one step further and never ever suggest it. Because it's just plain stupid. "My baby is sick" "have you tried dropping her"? is not something you hear from doctors. your standard 3.5" Hard drive is only rated for a few hundred G, which sounds like a lot, but considering dropping a drive from a few inches onto a rigid surface can exhibit nearly 600G's or so, it's not. Also, ironically enough, the only reason a platter might get stuck would be if the lubricant was dried up or the drive bearings weren't working. Say, for example, if you froze a drive using fluid bearings. Then the platters would be stuck. So we've gone from freezing a drive, now because the platters are stuck, we are dropping it. And now, because dropping it has irrepairably caused even more head-platter contact or even damaged the logic board, we will resort to literally transplanting the platters themselves to another drive enclosure. You forgot to note that the "enclosure" needs to be the EXACT same model as the other drive- so if you have a 2TB drive you want to recover, you need to buy another 2TB drive, rip it apart, and transplant the platters from the first drive to the new one. So now you've got a bunch of useless platters from the new drive, which in the case of a 2TB drive would not have been gotten on the cheap. If a person is willing to spend the money on data recovery, that's ALWAYS the best thing to do. Again, home remedies are a last resort for an "I've got nothing more to lose" situation, and like I said, they can make it more difficult for a proper data recovery firm to recover the data. In general, there's no reliable evidence one way or another that 100% confirms or refutes whether or not these home remedies work or if there's simply A LOT of correlation. On paper, at least a) and b) shouldn't work for reasons you've stated (i.e.: for a) fluid bearings in modern drives and just the simple G factor with b))--and c) will only work with an exact model hard drive as the transplant recipient in a dust-free environment. Yes, a 2 TB hard drive is not cheap, but neither is data recovery service--$100-$150 for another 2 TB drive or $1000+ for data recovery? How much is the data worth? If it's customer financials, then the answer is obvious. If it's just a collection of music, movies, and whatnot, then it becomes more iffy--some people do see things like that as an "emergency" in their mental state of panic, but the price tag usually snaps them back into reality. Often the end result is to cut their losses and start over with the faulty drive either a) Sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust b) In a landfill c) At a recycling center In any case, it would be nice if there was a way to see the operations inside a suspect drive to confirm or refute this for sure without inserting other factors in the equation (i.e.: dust or condensation). I think the one thing we can agree on is to never let a situation like this happen in the first place (aka: backups). However, too many people do let this happen and suffer the consequences one way or another. I do question the baby analogy, though: how many people (barring those with serious mental problems) get into a situation of "I have nothing more to lose--let's drop the baby to fix the problem" situation? Quote from: killerb255 on September 10, 2010, 09:38:30 AM If a person is willing to spend the money on data recovery, that's ALWAYS the best thing to do.No it's not! The best thing to do would be to buy a new drive and recovery from backups! Quote In general, there's no reliable evidence one way or another that 100% confirms or refutes whether or not these home remedies work or if there's simply A LOT of correlation. Common sense about how these things work should count as evidence. Quote Yes, a 2 TB hard drive is not cheap, but neither is data recovery service--$100-$150 for another 2 TB drive or $1000+ for data recovery? How much is the data worth? That's sort of my point. If somebody is willing to take such a risk with their data by performing a meticulous and painstaking surgery on it's internals, then the data is clearly important enough for them to have paid for professional data recovery. Quote In any case, it would be nice if there was a way to see the operations inside a suspect drive to confirm or refute this for sure without inserting other factors in the equation (i.e.: dust or condensation).Err... it's common sense. take cold metal into a warm room and water condenses on it. You don't need lab experiments to know that water boils when it's hot, not sure why evidence is needed to prove it condenses. Dust is more variable, but if you took a drive apart it would eventually fail because of it (the one I used a year or so ago lasted about three hours). Makes a terrible screeching sound, too. not pleasant. Quote I think the one thing we can agree on is to never let a situation like this happen in the first place (aka: backups). What! Take that back! I wanted to say it first! Quote I do question the baby analogy, though: how many people (barring those with serious mental problems) get into a situation of "I have nothing more to lose--let's drop the baby to fix the problem" situation? More then would be ideal. I just had a extreme case of forum deja vu. I Could swear I had a similar conversation about baby-dropping involving Patio. Seems to be a recurring topic....Yes we did...actually..... Or wait...no we didn't... |

Answer» In order to distribute files I'm trying to get an inserted flash drive to ALWAYS be allocated to drive letter Q: (as well as the drive letter already allocated by the system) USING the AUTORUN feature. It's working but leaves behind an icon of drive letter Q: complete with red ? as shown in the third image below. Does anyone know how to delete this icon when the flash drive is removed please? If you want a drive to remember it's drive letter designation then do 2 things: I won't know the drive letters of remote machines, it's possible that Q: has already been allocated, another hurdle to jump when the current problem is sorted. The drive allocations for the machine I'm testing on can be seen on the images. The flash drive already has the label Kingston as shown in the second image I posted. What I want to solve right now is how to get rid of the redundant icon in My Comp when the flash drive is disconnected. Thanks. |

Single-sentence posts and replies make the entire thing a case of pulling teeth. Example: Quote If so, how do you turn it on? was replied with this: Quote To turn it on, I just press a key What else would you do? use psychic powers? Additionally, this implies that the computer isn't even being turned on, but woken from sleep mode. Of course since they have this problem being EXPLICIT and are instead describing their problem a sentence at a time through short replies it's doubtful they would ever receive meaningful help. Quote Corruption is everywhere. Quote When I stand by my computer and start it after, the sound doesn't work. I need to reset the sound for it work again Why? Quote To turn it on, I just press a key Please elaborate. What activities were you doing during this issue? What kind of machine/computer do you have?Yes I use 'psychic powers', i.e. sympathy/empathy. I use my brain. I'm helpful, which is exactly the opposite of all the arrogants here. Enough said.Quote from: Big on September 04, 2010, 09:24:04 PM Yes I use 'psychic powers', i.e. sympathy/empathy. Corruption is everywhere. yes I really do see it. Stand by = Sleep (Hibernate for Vista) and I don't use psychic powers to open my computer. I JUST PRESS ANY KEY!!! That's simple To stand by my computer, I click on shutdown in the start menu and I click on Stand by... That's it, that's all. NOTHING more, nothing less Quote from: HP2 on September 05, 2010, 12:03:12 PM Stand by = Sleep (Hibernate for Vista)No. There are four power states. The computer is on, you are using it. The computer is off. the computer is on sleep/standby (low power mode, HD's powered down, most peripherals powered down) Hibernate. The computer saves all RAM to disk and shuts off. The only plausible scenario here is that your computer is NOT Off, it's in sleep/standby mode (NOT hibernate, either) because otherwise only the power switch would turn it on. Quote from: HP2 on September 04, 2010, 01:59:13 PM When I stand-by my computer and start it after, the sound doesn't work. I need to reset the sound for it work again Why? Fixed the above quote (stand by to the more clear stand-by). The answer? your sound hardware/driver isn't compatible with power saving mode. |

Solve : Windows Crashes When I Run Certain Programs? |
Answer» Okay, hopefully I'm doing this correctly. I have a gateway laptop PC running Windows XP. When I run certain PROGRAMS, which are all COMPUTER games of some type, my computer sometimes shuts itself down and says it's going on standby. When I reboot, I have to restart windows and half the time that doesn't work anyway and windows freezes. When it does work, I have to tell my computer to GO into the "last known good configuration" and when windows comes back on, it always brings up my system 32 folder. And this only happens when I'm running computer games of some sort, usually not ones from discs, but ones I've downloaded off of Big Fish Games or Nancy Drew games. Does ANYONE have any idea what is going on? It's driving me crazy. Any and all help would be MUCH appreciated. See Here |

Solve : Computer Reboots? |

RivaTuner did NOTHING, so I tried to INSTALL nTune. About halfway through the installation, the computer just rebooted. Once it turned back on, it rebooted within 1 minute of the desktop coming up. I shut it off, and this morning I tried "DISABLE automatic restart on system failure". This did nothing for some reason, it just rebooted again. Then I tried the last known working configuration, that seems to have fixed it, I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but does anyone know what the *censored* just happened? And should I reinstall all my nVidia stuff because nTune is half installed? My specs: |

Solve : How can I see what programs are running on the computer before I even log in?? |
Answer» I'm still trying to figure out why my browsing is so slow. I just noticed today that before I put my password in it said 50 unread email and the said 2 programs running. I'd like to see what these are and stop them as this may be part of the problem? I've been deleting spyware, resetting internet connections, MODEMS and repairing browsers but I'm sure this may help. I 'm using XP with IE7You will not be able to check with out logging in... So login, go the run command and type msconfig hit enter and go to the stratup tab (last one on the right. Everything with a check mark in the box starts when the computer starts. To stop them from starting when the computer starts just un-check them. Be very careful what you un-check some are vital for the computer to start. You can also go to the start button , programs , startup and make sure that folder is empty. I would recommend doing that first emptying the startup folderDisregard the above, please. Download HijackThis: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html and post its log I agree with "Broni", do not empty that folder. As prev stated you need to download "HiJack This" first thing and post the log it generates on this WEBSITE. You also, (if you have none). Need a Malware, and Anti-Virus program. Also dont forget to Defrag your Hard Drive at least weekly and run the Malware & AntiVirus scanners weekly or bi-weekly. Depending on your use of the internet. Here is also a popular download site for all types of programs: http://www.download.com/Antivirus-Firewall-Spyware/?tag=dir |

Solve : Question Old Files on "New" Computer?? |
Answer» I really am not that know ledgable about the inner workings of computers. But last month I purchased a Gateway laptop. After about the second week of owning it I noticed several problems. The biggest problem is that it won't sleep, no matter where I put the sleep setting. When I LEAVE the lid open my desktop stays on the monitor, if I close the lid I can hear it RUNNING and running and then when I open it I get the black error screen that say's Windows did not shut down properly. The only way to shut down this computer is to go to the start menu and shut it down. So I went searching and found Event Log under Administrative Tools. Here I found critical logs that dated back to 6/11/06 and 8/11/07 and the errors from my use. These are dated 12/07 to present. These errors all deal with rebooting and shutdown. I went to Office Depot where I purchased the computer and their response to me was "Too bad, you didn't buy the extended WARRANTY from us. Go deal with Gateway." They also said that it is normal for there to be files on a computer that may be almost two years old. They said that the computer was probably sitting in a warehouse for these two years. OKKKKKK My question to you is what is your opinion on all of this? Is it acceptable that a computer that is sold as new would have files on it that are almost two years old? I feel that this should be Office Depot's fight with Gateway and not mine. Their take on it is "We're out of it." I'm going to continue my fight, but I thought I would first get some opinions from people who are more knowledgeable than I. I'd appreciate any help or ideas you can offer. Thank You, SusanI agree, you should fight the good fight and get the new laptop as you thought you were getting when you bought the gateway. Also, your right a new computer would not have 2 yr old logs under "event viewer". This is obviously a return that may have had problems from the start. |

Solve : Thunderbird mail won't deliver? |
Answer» Quote Capacity: 6,440,845,312 bytes 599GBI assume, it's 5.99GB...It's really small HD. Quote is getting bigger hard drive out of question? You can start out by RUNNING DiskClean from Programs/Accessories/System tools... When that's done run disk defrag if you haven't done it in AWHILE ( you may want to run it before you go to bed) Then start by tracking down the most space hungry files you have such as photos; videos and music and start organising them to be burned to CD/DVD. You do have a burner correct ? ? At any rate this is a good start for getting organised. But these guys are correct...start shopping for a new HDD.Broni & patio: Thanks. It is a 5.99 and has no burner and wasn't able to back up files onto an inserted disk. I've done Disk Cleanup and CCleaner, but can't Defrag or System Restore because I only have 2% of available space. I used to have much more room. I disconnected the printer to have it serviced and couldn't re-install it because I had no room. What happened? A-squared and Comodo Plus have found nothing untoward as per malware. I've deleted all programs in Add/Delete that weren't used often but have found, in My Documents a whole bunch of files that seem to repeat and initials/codes that I don't know the meaning of. I Googled .dll and it said Windows needs those to operate. I don't know what the system needs and doesn't need to work efficiently, but I'm hoping there is a place I can go to see what files/codes are necessary, then I can delete the other stuff. A senior, on Disability, it took me 5 months to save for this little, used pc and it gives me a volunteer job that makes me feel worthy. That's very important to me at this stage. I'm GOING to go into My Documents and see if there are any photo/music files in there that I can delete. I used to share my pc with a grandchild so, I'll find stuff that I won't recognize and should be able to just get rid of. Then I'll run CCleaner and Disk Cleanup and try System Restore, in case there isn't enough room to Defrag, still. I've found your instructions most helpful and I am following your step-by-step tasks to get my pc back. It is a big task and I hope to get some satisfaction from it all. Isn't there a SITE, or somehow can I find out what the initials/codes are - write them down - and delete all the other stuff? I can re-download my anti-malware software and re-install my printer and, would it ever be nice to get some efficiency out of this, so I can, too. Your help is so needed and appreciated. Many thanks, Ann Download, and install Disk Space Reporter: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Disc-Space-Reporter.shtml Very small file (under 200KB). Open it, it'll SCAN your computer. When it's done, go File>Save As, and save its report to known location. You can't attach this type of file here, so PM me, and I'll give you my email address. You'll send that report to me, then. I'll see, if you have any huge files, we can delete.Hi Broni: I deleted all music and photo files. Tried many times to download Disc Reporter and every time, it stops everything, before I get to Save it. Two of those times, I got as far as 'Allowing' Comodo firewall to proceed with the download. The link, for Windows XP download problems, gives directions for EI. Mine isn't working. It just means we have to try something else. I hope you consider this a bit of a challenge! Thanks, Ann PM me with your email address. I'll send you a copy of installation file. |

Solve : Help needed with 'Autoruns' entries!?? |
Answer» Hello Forum Guys! Similar to 'Malware Fighting', why don't you come up with an "Exclusive" section to cater to those who need help with "Autoruns" utility of Microsoft!?That would be dumb and a waste of forum space. Especially since your the only one that appears to care. Quote Anyways, my Autoruns scan depict multiple entries with path showing up as "File not found", yet these are checked. Probably. Quote what about drivers? Do all of these need to be started up at the BOOT to ensure a smooth functioning?(Under options::Hide Windows entries is checked, so don't worry!)Yes. They do. Here's an idea, disable them and complain about your nonbootable system that now crashes to a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME blue screen, because you decided that the NTFS driver was, as you say "bloat". Quote I wish to see 'HijackThis' kind of tool, where users can post their 'Autoruns' log with the tool advising them on which to retain & the rest to discard. If you don't know how to use autoruns, you shouldn't be using it. Hello Broni & BC(Got your point!) My PC is really mine. Pen-drives & CDs are used very rarely, so no chance of external infection through any of these media. I know & am confident of my surfing habits(unless someone decide to ditch me at this forum by posting a venomous link! ) Lastly, by setting my DNS(here is the KEY!) to that of GOOGLE's Public DNS-8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4, I ensure "Minimum Latency" & ofcourse, "Maximum protection" from fake & malware-infested websites. Cannot STUFF my 2002 dated PC(Pentium 4) with every kind of sine qua non. Have learnt to keep my system lean & mean. How's that? All I can say....Good luck with that...Quote Lastly, by setting my DNS(here is the KEY!) to that of Google's Public DNS-8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4, I ensure "Minimum Latency" & ofcourse, "Maximum protection" from fake & malware-infested websites. Solve : have another question? |
Answer» the other problem I have is with my girls computer, I have a problem with my computer too, when I turn mine on you can HEAR it START or trying to start, the button on the moniter by the on off button will be green but will turn amber LIKE it does when it goes to sleep a few seconds later, it does it everytime. I tried hooking my computer up to the girls moniter (both COMPUTERS are the same KIND) and it acts that way with their moniter too, their computer starts up fine with both moniters. |
