Solve : Funky things happened to my xp after restart.?

Answer»

After restarting my xp computer, all my personal added desktop icons disappeared, the general gateway wallpaper came back. I thought all my personal FOLDERS and files were gone however I have since found them and there were only relocated. Internet explorer and Outlook express stayed on the computer, however they were both wiped clean of any mail or favorites and when you go into them they are as if they were just installed and you need to SET them up. I have an updated and working NORTON and there is no virus. I have tried doing a restore to a different day, however it runs its course and then tells me it can't restore to that day. What could have happened and any idea of how I fix it?Is there more than one User Profile set up on this machine ? ?
Sounds like it is OPENING in the default profile...
These will be shown on startup.

Solve : IE6 closes at sign in screen on FTP web pages?

Answer»

Hi, I tried this problem in the 'Browser' section with no response, so let's try here. I'm running w98se which is a new clean install on a formatted and scanned disk - IE5 from the w98 CD worked fine, but when I upgraded to IE6 every time I try to sign in to a site such as this one I get the 'WINDOWS has to close' message. Strangely enough, encripted sites such as my Bank, Mastercard and etc. work fine. I tried downloading SP1 and all possible Windows upgrades and fixes - no change. I have the same setup on another hd and tried removing ie6 and oe6 and copying them from the other drive - no change.[IE6 on the other smaller and slower hd works fine] The error report to micro points to a VB problem and msvcrt.dll - VB not installed. Tried downloading the dll file into my IE6 file with no change. Micro's knowledge base just takes me round in circles.
Had to download and run Firefox to send in this plea for help!It looks as THOUGH I've FOUND something you guys can't fix! Don't believe it.Try to extract msvcrt.dll from your Windows 98 CD, and put it in C:\Windows\system rather, then in IE directory.Quote from: Broni on December 08, 2007, 10:46:16 AM

Solve : Added new ram now nothing else works??

Answer»

My boyfriend has windows xp and decided to add more ram the other day.
Worked, everything was running okay.
We RESTARTED then the sound wouldn't work. He installed the update for the sound, restarted the COMPUTER and ever since then the computer won't start properly. A few times System Registry popped up. That stopped, but now every time we start it something new isn't working. First it was the sound, fixed it, then it was the keyboard, fixed it. Now it is showing the internet works but it can't connect (and it works on the other computers on the network).
We removed the new ram and REPLACED all the old ram. But we are still having the same issues.
Can anyone help?Did you try System Restore?not yet. it was on the agenda for today.

currently we have the new ram in and it works (we've tried it by itself) and the computer is noticeably faster. should we put the old ram back in to do the system restore, or is it possible to do the restore with the new one in? what do you suggest?
thank you for the help! So, what doesn't work, right now?The sound was GIVING us PROBLEMS, it works now but we still get a "end program" when we shut down. it's saying it is having problems ending the sound card. System registry warnings popped up a few times saying it had to use its back up. The internet isn't working right now, but it clearly says it is connected and running. And every time we start the computer the black screen asking if we want to start in safe-mode or regular mode comes up.
Quote

System registry warnings popped up a few times saying it had to use its back up
Do you mean System Restore, because I'm not sure what "system registry" is...i definitely meant Windows System Registry.
i believe it was popping up because we put in the new ram.
it has since stopped popping up, but the other problems persist.

i'm just unsure if i should do a system restore with the new ram in, or if that would cause more problems?
I'd reinstall old RAM, do System Restore, and restart. See, how it goes.
Report back with any problems.

Solve : Temporary Internet Files?

Answer»

Is there any way to locate the temporary internet files the system created when you save a document. I need find a file that was created when I saved an email attachment. I know it was saved in "C:\.....Temporay Internet\.... - but I cannot find this file.Just to be sure you understand, Temporay Internet Files is not a good place to save an email attachment if it's something you really want to keep. Temporay Internet Files get deleted if your clear your BROWSER cache, run Windows Disk Cleanup, or run some other disk cleanup utility such as CCLEANER. And, even if you don't manually activate a cleanup procedure, files may be automatically removed from Temporay Internet Files when they exceed a set amount of hard drive space.

Have you used Windows Search to search for the file?
Thanks for the great device and this is not something that I would normally do. Presenter was using system to show presentaton and stated that they saved the document; however, I know they only clicked saved which sent valuable file to temporary internet file location. I am in the processing of doing a full search to include hidden files as well. Are you sure it would have been saved in temporary Internet files (TIF)? I use Outlook Express for most of my email. Right now, if I open a message with an attachment and elect to save the attachment by clicking the paper clip icon at the right end of the message header in the PREVIEW pane and selecting "Save Attachments...", the location that appears there is not where TIF is stored. It's the same location I specified the last time I saved an attachment.

If I open the message in a separate panel, the attachment appears in a box above the body of the message. If I right click on the attachment and select Save As, My Documents appears as the default location.

So, you may need to include your entire hard drive in your search if you haven't already done so. This is what happened. A file was sent to revise while doing a presentation via outlook. I opened the file so all could view it on the screen as I had the projector plugged into my system. As we were making changes to the document I clinic the save icon several times. At the end of the presentation I had to walk out of the and they individual stated that the document had been saved. On the following day, I attempted to bring the document up and to no avail. Not the one I saved or the one that was saved after me. My only outcome is that it went to Temporary Internet Files. Since I cannot find it on my regular directory for stored info, I was hoping that it was there. However, it is difficult to find the location of the TEMP files.I believe Temporary Internet Files are normally stored in:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

where user is your USERNAME on your computer.

Solve : skype?

Answer»

should i be able to download -skype-onto my WINDOWS xp computer..i keep getting a rejection tab saying- not a VALID win 32 application..THANKS kindly for any response schemer.Hi schemer,

Yes you should EASILY be able to install Skype on your Windows XP computer. Seems like you're getting a bad copy of Skype for it to do that. Make sure whenever you download it, you save it, and turn off any download managers or accelerators of yours, and USE the Download manager that came with your internet browser. Also, what kind of connection are you on?

Solve : Computer resets often.?

Answer»

Hi,

I've been having this trouble for a while and its driving me insane. My computer resets by itself. It may be on for a few hours or a whole day, down to a few minutes. Then it resets. It would come back up fine but now it resets and gets stuck at the windows xp boot up screen. Then resets again. It will then reset and ask me how I want to boot up windows, I choose last know good config and it resets again. Its just keeps looping. If I keep it off for 30 minutes then Ill boot it up and it goes back to NORMAL. It doesnt matter what Im doing, I could be playing a game or just let it sit idle and same issue. But more so when playing a game or running mutiple programs at the same time. Ive built my rig almost 4 years ago.

So far Ive taken out two sticks of ram, cleaned out all the dust from the inside of my computer and made sure everything was fitted properly.

Also Ive turned off indexing and I do get bsod and these two messages so far since I disabled the option of automatic reboot on a bsod.

windows xp sp2
120 gig seagate harddrive
3.0 ghz p4 cpu
2 gigs of ram (1 gig right now at pc3200)
ati tv wonder pro
generic sound card from best buy, dnyex i think its a 5.1 channel one
Nvidia 6600 gt 128mb

I also have a thermaltake 500 watt power supply

I dont know what else to do, please help .Download SeaTools from the Seagate site and test the hard drive.

Download Memtest from www.memtest86.org and check each stick of RAM for an hour or so individually, then all together.

Both of these run before Windows loads, so you can eliminate Windows as a source of problems at this point.

Take the side panel off and make sure all fans are turning and then leave it off and point a fan directly in there.

Post back your results. where exact do you download from? (the memtest)1. MemTest86 "Home" site is: http://www.memtest86.com

There are links on the left-hand side of the home page. Left-click on "Free Download". The latest version is "MemTest86 v3.4".

You choose between downloads to create a bootable floppy or CD-ROM.

2. Boot Floppy. To create a bootable MemTest86 floppy from a Windows or DOS environment choose:

Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.4 installable from Windows and DOS
http://www.memtest86.com/memtest34.zip

Within the downloaded zip file there is a "README.txt" that is also the USERS manual for MemTest86. I've found that I can read it in Microsoft Word, but in order to read it through "Notepad" I have to open it in Word and then save it out (possibly as new) as text file. Not sure why.

ADDENDUM: Twice downloaded, unzipped, made floppy, and attempted to execute "v3.4" of MemTest86. It loaded and started but crashed with an "Unexpected Interrupt - Halting" after only 19 seconds of execution. This happened repeatedly on a system without any history of memory errors. Apparently, it is a problem with this version of the program as I can still successfully run "v3.3" on my old Pentium II 350 MHz system and have successfully run "v3.2" in the past. If you experience program failure, suggest you fall back to version 3.3.

3. Boot CD. To create a bootable MemTest86 CD-ROM, I would choose the following:

Download - Memtest86 v3.4 ISO image (zip)
http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.4.iso.zip

Well I did a test on my hard drive and it said everything was fine.

Now when I did the memory test, I tested each stick individually.

It would reset every time I did the test. Didn't matter which slot or what stick of ram I was using.

So.....thanks, the memtest.org is some commercial site.
1. Hard Drive. Whose test did you run? What version? What media did you boot from? Which test function(s) did you run (i.e., what did you test)?

2. Memory. Whose test did you run? What version? What media did you boot from? Which test function(s) did you run (i.e. default test settings or specific test functions)?

How far did the testing get? Were there any memory errors reported?

Looking ahead to your answer, I decided to test drive MemTest86 v3.4 using default settings on my old Pentium II 350 MHz system with i440BX chipset. Twice downloaded, unzipped, made floppy, and attempted to execute "v3.4" of MemTest86. It loaded and started but crashed with an "Unexpected Interrupt - Halting" after only 19 seconds of execution. It did not "reset" HOWEVER. This happened repeatedly on a system without any history of memory errors. Apparently, my problem is with this version of the program as I can still successfully run "v3.3" on my old Pentium II system and have successfully run "v3.2" in the past. If you experience program failure, suggest you fall back to version 3.3.
Good info from Dahlarbear here...i also experienced problems with V3.4 as well and reverted back to an older version. Problem solved.1. I used westered digital data lifeguard 1.9b, I forgot I SWITCHED out my seagate hardrive a while back.

2. I went ahead and used 3.3v of the mem test. Booted w/ cd and still reset. Again doesnt matter which stick I use or slot. I have 3 slots.

Even with a fan blowing, doesn't help.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard.

No do not have TWEAKU installed OjasOops, it's TWEAKUI; I LEFT the I off the end. My understanding is that TWEAKUI can ADD that back for you. Go here to get it: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htmRight-click the start menu, select Properties. Under the Start Menu tab, click Customize. Solve : need to fix pc but no xp or start up disk?

Answer»

Help,
My roomie decided to try and istall his vista on my pc which was USING xp home, it is now asking for the key but i do not have it as he is no longer living near me. I hate vista and want to go back to my original xp but to reformat or do a clean sweep i have no system restore or xp start up disk, am I doomed or is there some file lurking in my pc which I can boot from???/
Much THANK in advanceWelcome to the CH forums.

When the attempt was made to install Vista was it as a dual boot or was your hard drive formatted prior to the Vista install?

Can you boot your pc into any operating system?

Lots more info needed - please read this..

Hi,
My original operating system was xp home edition. I have a HP desktop, not sure of model exactly.
When my roomate installed the vista it was off his upgrade anytime cd that came with his laptop. He put it in my cd drive and installed vista home basic. It put all my xp stuff into a file called "old xp", I am now getting a message to "activate windows"
when i click on this it asks for a key which as i said i dont have, it is also saying i have 10 days to activate or windows will not work correctly.
I am noticing when I start up my pc i see a F10 system restore, can i click on this and restore my system without either start up or system restore cd?
ThanksWithout a restore disk I think you're fried. HP might help but MS never made it easy to do a retro reinstall of an older operating system without at least deleting the EXISTING Windows folder. Even if you had the product key for your friend's cd I doubt if you'd last long as MS would pick up that one cd had been used to install Vista on two pc's which is a big no-no.

But wait, someone with more knowledge than I have on this subject MAY come along soon with a solution for you.

Bonne chance.

Thanks,

Me thinks Im just going to have to go and buy another copy of XP home edition, easier that way
Thanks Y'all1.

I am noticing when I start up my pc i see a F10 system restore, can i click on this and restore my system without either start up or system restore cd?

I think so, as long as your system came with "recovery partition" that is still on your hard drive. If successful, it will restore your hard drive to state it was in when you bought the system. All programs and data installed since you bought it will be gone unless you back them up first.

You say the HP desktop computer had Windows XP Home Edition, but no System Restore or XP setup CD. Computers sold in this state usually come with a "Recovery CD" or a "Recovery Partition". Normally an installation of Windows (Vista?) would not disturb this partition. Have you looked at the partition structure of the hard drive to see if there is a "hidden" recovery partition on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_partition

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_CD

You may use the "Disk Management" tool that comes with Vista to do this. If present, the recovery partition is usually the first partition on Disk 0, perhaps about 6 GB in size.

To access, go to Run (Windows key + R) and type diskmgmt.msc. This command will open the Disk Management tool directly. Dig for more info in the following link:

http://www.vista4beginners.com/How-to-manage-your-disks-using-only-Windows-Vista-Disk-Management-tool

I believe you may hit a function key (F10 or F11?) at system startup for a menu with access to recovery partition. You'll have to go to HP web site for user documentation identifying correct function key if not shown on monitor during startup. If recovery partition is still present, recovery will revert your file system to state it was in when machine was sold. (You'll lose all your programs and data installed since then).

2. Original Configuration. Take a closer look at the case of your HP desktop to determine the Model Number of the machine, e.g. Pavilion 6736. Also look on the back of the box for a Hewlett-Packard sticker. Model Number might be top of sticker (right side).

With model number you may be able to access support and downloads section of HP web site for user documentation pertaining to your computer.

3. Perhaps you can call HP and order (buy) a Restore CD for your Model Number and Operating System. If still available it would be cheaper than buying a new operating system license.

4. Uninstall Vista (and revert to Windows XP). Microsoft does not PROVIDE user interface to simply revert back to Windows XP (the previous operating system) by uninstalling Vista. At least that's what they say in the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933170

Solve : Hp laptop with XP operating sysytem?

Answer»

Today,my computer froze and was unresponsive to CTRL alt delete so I did a hard shutdown. When I tried to turn it back on it would not start up properly. It stays on the blue screen that says windows is starting up. What can I do to fix this?Hi Diondre,

Were you downloading anything today? If so, maybe you contracted some sort of virus or other malware. The Windows blue screen of death is all too famous after you've received a virus or something else that has destroyed system files. My recommendation as a Windows user would be to, if you're able to, RUN a virus SCAN on your computer. If you're unable to get into the computer at all, try using Safe Mode. You can get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 while your computer is starting up. You may have to press it multiple times. After you've gotten into Safe Mode, run the virus scan there.

If after all that your computer is still unresponsive, I would RECOMMEND doing a complete reformat of your hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP. Your HP Laptop more than likely came with a reinstallation CD.

-DonYou SAY you have a blue screen. What exactly does it have written on it?

Solve : Windows clock?

Answer»

I recently SCANNED the COMPUTER for adware and spyware and the scan did not find anything noticeable wrong. I then noticed the computer clock had changed from standard time to military time on its own, can anyone explain what just HAPPENED and how to fix this problem. Double click on the time clock, then adjust the time to what ever zone that you are in. As for why it went to military time not SURE but I am sure if you GOGGLE it you could find some answers. L et me know.Ok, I found out how to change it back for you.

First go to CONTROL PANEL and open up regional options, click on CUSTOMIZE and then time from there you can change your time back to regular format.

Hope this will help if not go to this link below.

Solve : Undeletable file??

Answer»

First off, I'm running Windows 2000. I'm NOT on the account aharding, I'm on the account administrator. I've rebooted w/o logging into aharding.

Here's the deal: I tried to delete the account aharding to free up space, but Winodws ENDED up ONLY deleting the login, NOT C:/documents and settings/aharding. So I went to the folder and tried manually deleting the user DATA. There are THREE undeletable files, all in the folder TEMP, but, when I looked for them, they where not there. I tried deleting them in MSDOS, and it said something like, "ERROR: FILE NOT FOUND". It's there, however, because when I try and delete it in windows it DISPLAYS a filename "SHOPS_~3" Or similar.

WHAT'S WRONG?!

Thanks for all your help, aeharding. It's kinda hard to understand from your english what you are referring to, but try FileASSASIN
http://www.malwarebytes.org/FA_Portable.zip

That's the portable version, so no installing or uninstalling necessary. Basically, just check all the options, it will unlock the file and then proceed to delete it. That way, if it doesn't delete because it's in use, it will be ABLE to be deleted now. Usually though, if I have a file that can't be deleted cause it semi doesn't exist, I just boot of a Linux Live CD and do it that way. However, if they don't take up much space, I wouldn't bother.

Solve : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM missing or corrupt HELP?

Answer»

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM MISSING or corrupt - My computer won't start up I don't have a setup disk what can I do? I do have access to another computer can I make a setup disk? I'm running XP media.

GarySince you don't have Windows CD, repairing your problem depends, if you have Recovery Console installed on your computer.
To check it out:
Reboot the computer and before the Windows Logo SCREEN appears tap F8. If you're lucky, you'll have the option to boot into Recovery Console.

If so, read here:
http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Windows/C:%5Cwindows%5Csystem32%5Cconfig%5Csystem_missing_or_corrupt.html
and also here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3075451. If you have a working floppy drive, you can download the Windows XP Setup boot DISKS (six volume floppy set):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/en-us

Be sure to get the right set; Windows XP (Home or Professional), Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2.

2. Have you tried the options available on the 'Windows Advanced Options Menu"? At start-up, tap the F8 key about once per second until the Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. I would try in the following order:

o Last Known Good Configuration
o Safe Mode
o Safe Mode with Command PROMPT

3. How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP (Safe Mode with Command Prompt). A system restore to an earlier time will also load version of registry for that time:

Solve : Computer Freezes at Startup?

Answer»

Well, I'm having a bit of a computer problem and I'm hoping someone can help.

I'm running windows XP home edition and the problem is that it FREEZES immediately after start up. Well, its more of a TIME thing...it freezes about 30 seconds after TURNING it on, regardless of what screen it's at (for example, I can't boot into safe mode because when the computer enters the selection screen after pressing F8, it freezes.) Also, it's a strange kind of freeze as the keyboard and mouse are STILL RESPONSIVE.

Some background info. Immediately before this problem started my anti-virus software picked up massive amounts of Trojans on the HDD. I ran the software in an attempt to remove these viruses and then restarted upon completion. That's when the problem started. The computer would not restart and now I'm stuck with an inoperable system. Anyone have any idea how i can fix this?

Thanks

Solve : Help, computer is my computer in safe mode??

Answer»

Hi,
I currently am running windows XP. For the past few months I had been experiencing extremely slow loading times to LOAD windows (USUALLY 30 minutes out of hibernation). I downloaded Microsoft Bootvis and might have altered something in msconfig. I didn't think I made any changes to my computer, but the next time I started it up it started up in what looked to be windows 98' the bottom task bar styling, etc., I cannot add/remove programs and my Norton Anti-Virus is gets errors trying to update. I don't see safe mode anywhere on the taskbar or screen corners and under misconfig the safe mode box is not checked. Also I have no audio ANYMORE and it says I have no audio driver installed.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Norton anti-virus says Auto-Protect experienced an unexpected error. Ox800705b4Do you have Windows XP CD, or Recovery CD? It may be your best option. No, I don't know what's going on? It doesn't sound like you're in Safe Mode.

You never explicitly said... Are you able to boot up in Safe Mode?

Unplug from internet (as your anti-malware software won't automatically load to protect you under Safe Mode). At system startup, tap the F8 KEY about once per second until the Windows Advanced Options Menu comes up. Select Safe Mode. Is your system load time normal under this mode? How does it run under this mode with minimum driver support and no startup programs loaded?

Sounds like a typical case of malware/adware/virusses.

A month ago my XP laptop also took ages to start up.
After running Ad Aware, spy-bot and AVG it still was too slow.

There was a nasty virus that I couldn't get rid of.
My solution was to DUST of the XP cd (official), format c: and re install everything.
That did the trick.

I hope for you that your adware/spyware removal and virus scanner will be able to remove it!

Solve : PC problem!!?

Answer»

Ok... first off... I've read the FAQ and also the PC help bit with the different stages of problems with booting.

Yep if you guessed it I'm having problems getting on my PC hence boot problem. Now let me start by saying I'm a complete and utter noob/novice when it comes to PC hardware and software (code and general tricks of the trade) so sorry if my descriptions are more descriptive than technical.

PC Info

Operating system:- XP
Service packs:- 2
COMPUTER make/model : - HP Pavilion t3000 / Product: t3065 UK / SYSTEM NUMBER: PX638AA
RAM :- 2Gb
Hard drive :- Sorry I only know its got 2 each with 250Gb
Graphics Card :- 6800 and I think its a GT soooo 6800 GT
Adware/spyware/virus :- Computer broke down about 6months ago so its out of date. Got Norton and AVG, Adware SE on it etc
Windows CD :- Yes

My problem is I switch my PC on it makes all the normal noises (loading sounds) but I still have a blank screen. I've left it on for hours and had no change. The PC is on (fans are on the LEDs are on both on power supply and front). Both the drives work if I press eject etc. I've changed the monitor and tried tons of others but no change!

Could you please give me some advise please. So, by normal sounds... does it beep when loading? It's normal for a computer to beep ONCE during the loading process. You mentioned it "broke down" about 6 months ago. Can you elaborate on that?

Also, is there hard drive activity? (check the HDD light on the front)

And do you hear it eventually go into Windows?

Sounds to me like the video card is either loose or dead/dying.

Note: CD drives will always open as long as they have power, whether the system itself is WORKING properly or not. Like you said it normally beeps the once but currently doesn't even do that. By HDD light I'm guessing the little orange one below the on button that flashes. Yes it flashes couple times and then nothing.

By broke down I meant I had this problem. Was GOING away for couple months so wrapped up the pc put it way and I find myself needing it fix over the next couple weeks now.

No, no sounds like going into windows. I had a mate come over the other day who usually upgrades his hardware to check if anything was lose and nope it was all in. Tried again and still no luck.

lol ta for the CD drive tipWhen you try to boot with the 256MB of ram removed from
your computer, does this change the computer beeps ect..?
Is the monitor on the right connector ? ?
If you have 2 connections for a monitor i would remove the video card and see if it boots with the onboard video first...street1 - Erm where is the 256mb ram? The PC is 2gb and lowest combo I could ever imagine it being is 4x 512mb. LoL sorry if I sound like a fool bud... and also you said if changed does it change the beeps... I don't have beeps to change at the moment.

Patio - As for being on the right connector... its been 'plugged into the same port/connection/etc the WHOLE time. Its literally the same connected wise as it used to be but not working. Plus sorry to say it bud would not have a clue on how to change it.Quote from: street1 on December 06, 2007, 04:54:45 AM

They are fairly simple to connect...it will only go in one way and there are 2 thumbscrews that hold it in place."Like you said it normally beeps the once but currently doesn't even do that..."

If you get no "beep" (P.O.S.T.) then you have a hardware problem. Best to remove/disconnect all peripheral hardware (cdrom, floppy, modem, etc.) to a bare-bones system of CPU, RAM, PSU, motherboard & keyboard. After removing/disconnecting all but the above, what happens?

Alan <>< well i'll ring a friend to pop over and do the above lol. I wouldn't know where to start.

yeah you can format the xp home with another disc.
You use a serial key generator?that's illegal to discuss here i believe, because you are attempting to make the windows genuine.
The best steps are call Microsoft.1. Recovery Partion or Recovery CD. Perhaps you have another OPTION.

You say the computer came preinstalled with Windows XP Home, but no XP CD. Computers sold in this state usually come with a "Recovery CD" or a "Recovery Partition". Have you looked at the partition structure of the hard drive to see if there is a "hidden" recovery partition on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_partition

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_CD

You may use the "Disk Management" snap-in that comes with Windows XP to do this. If present, the recovery partition is usually the first partition on Disk 0. (Not sure if you need "administrator" permissions to do this. If Windows XP Home, you might have to access from Safe Mode.)

http://safari.oreilly.com/059600897X/windowsxptmm2-CHP-15-SECT-5

http://www.mcse.ms/message507297.html

2. Original Configuration. What is the make and model number of the original computer that came preinstalled with Windows XP Home? Is it an OEM installation?

Does the original preinstalled Windows XP Home installation have a product key? If so, record it and keep it in a safe place.

3. What does the label say on the XP CD that you do have? Is it retail version of Windows XP Installation CD (Home Edition or Professional? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), or SP2?); or is it an OEM Windows XP Installation CD?

Solve : Did i lost all my password protected files??

Answer»

Hi, i desperately come to this forum looking for a solution to my problem. My career and my job its at stake, so please HELP me if you can.
I use to have an user with a password, and all the files were protected with the password too, but all of a sudden a virus attacked my computer and i wasnt able to enter with ANY user, so i took my hard drive and i slaved it to another computer. But now i can not access the documents from that user, since they are in a secondary hard drive. When i try to open the files a window comes up telling me that these files are password protected (i do remember the password). And this really scares me, the size of the folder is o.o kb, does this mean i lost EVERYTHING?? Thanks for your help.

I use Windows XP SP2.
Let us know how you go.Have you tried the below ?

http://www.lastbit.com/FindPassword/default.aspAre you using XP Home or Pro? Also, how did you password protect the files themselves?when connected the HD as a slave wasnt there any announcement at the startup?
you say that the folder in the HD when connected as slave is 0 kb?
can you log in safemode?
and just an advice. if [/quote]My career and my job its at stake, so please help me if you can.
you can always go (with the WHOLE computer, both HD) to an expert and pay some bucks.

Solve : Tool Tips remain on screen?

Answer» Using: Windows XP, Office 2003,Internet Explorer 7; On an intermittent basis, when on the Internet,"tool tips" (the little labels that appear when you rest your POINTER on an icon, defining/identifying /explaining the icon, etc.) remain on the SCREEN long after the window with the icon PROMPTING the "tool tip" has closed. The "label remains on the screen blocking part of successive windows. If I ROLL the cursor over the label, it momentarily becomes a pointer, but nothing ELSE happens. The only way I've discovered to remove the errant tool tip is to log off the internet, which, can be quite inconvenient. Is there another way to remove this, or to prevent it from happening? Thanks!

Solve : Restrictions?!?

Answer»

Hello,

Using Windows XP SP2. Every time I start my computer, there is a process that I have to end. However, today, when I pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del I received this error:

When I press Ctrl + R (run) I receive this error:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

RESTRICTIONS ON EVERY SINGLE APPLICATION I NEED TO USE!!

Does anyone know how to get rid of this restrictions? Or is it time to get a new computer? Or MAYBE it's a problem with the owner of the computer?

I TRIED to remove the restrictions in REGEDIT, but it still didn't work.
I can't even shut down the computer because of these restrictions!

BTW: Will get into Safe Mode tonight and see how many infections AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Virus finds. Ask for HJT log if required.*censored*! That's why I have restrictions! Serial99.com.

Lesson Learned. Looking at a solution somewhere else.Did you get it fixed?Well, sort of.

Luckily, the Turn Off Computer button was restored, but startup was slow.
Serves me right for being a greedy pig and TRYING to open a keygen.

I'll post a HJT log at Computer Viruses and Spyware.

Now downloading Spybot S&D (want to get rid of the guilt by uninstalling AVG Anti-spyware).Hi dairyman. I see you posted your last message at 5:15 a.m. I'll bet that was just before you went to the barn to milk the cows. Right?

LOL. I live in Australia, so the time is different here.

Quote
What process is that?

There is a memory leak caused by SVCHOST.EXE. I FOUND somewhere it said that it is due to a large HOSTS file and can be terminated without causing problems. So far, it hasn't caused any problems. The reason for the large HOSTS file is because I installed MVPS HOSTS.

Quote
You were just feeling adventurous, right?

Nopers. I don't go in there saying "Hey, what does this do?" or "I wonder what would happen if I delete that". After removing those keys, the restrictions were gone.

Quote
Well, Spybot S&D is very good, but why did you uninstall AVG Anti-spyware?

Ummm, how do I explain this: KEYGEN + AVG Anti-Spyware.
DOWNLOADED a keygen for AVG Anti-Spyware from Serial99.com, and that's when I had a virus infection.

Won't download any keygens again.

And like I said:

Solve : Missing vgaoem.fon?

Answer»

So. my lady was crusin the internet (on an XP os) tonight when it started running extra slow, went to the blue screen and shut down. upon restart we learn that it will not reboot because the file c:\windows\system\vgaoem.fon is missing or corrupt. So I proceeded to find out how to solve this prob. I found that by using an xp disk I can choose to boot from the disk and then repair the missing or corrupt file. So I finally get a command prompt by selecting repair from the options on the xp cd.
I get to the xp disk and find the file on the disk e:\i386\vgaoem.fo_ . So i go into the dir. i386
and type this command. "E:\I386>expand vgaoem.fo_c:\windows\system" and it tells me "Access is denied"
WHile I was trying to find the SOLUTION to this prob. most recomendations TOLD me that I would be asked to enter the admin password. but I NEVER got prompted too. IM the first owner of this computer and have only had it for about a year. I never set an admin pass when I initally started using the pc either.
I run my dj biz. of this laptop and cant afford to lose my whole music collection and contracts and everything else. PLS PLS Help.

Solve : Video issues.?

Answer»

This problem has just started happening and it only applies when I play videos on my computer. (Happens in ALL video players. Not just one)

Whenever I play a video the colors are all washed out and bright and it is in a blue tint. My desktop and everything else (webbrower, flash, etc) all look perfectly FINE.

Any ideas as to what WOULD be causing this to happen?

Thanks!

PS: Windows XP sp2.Is it onboard video or do you have a video CARD installed? If it's a video card do you have another that you know is 100% to swap it with and see if maybe your video card is DYING and it can't take the extra strain of playing videos?Maybe, you just need to update/reinstall your video drivers...i AGREE with kbm292 about the video card dying. How old is the computer and are you using onboard card or an added card?Audios:
I have exactly the same problem that I am trying to troubleshoot on a Win98 machine. The machine is older, but the video card was upgraded a year ago to run the Sims2. When ever I view a video in windows media player or another application (the video program that came with my camcorder), the colors are washed out and skewed to blue. Videos are in various formats (I have two camcorder that use different codecs, plus other videos, including iTunes videos) Everything else looks fine. Have you found a solution?

Solve : Computer problems- weird errors & repeatedly restarting?

Answer»

Hi, this is my FIRST time here & I dont know if this is in the right section but...my girlfriend computer appears to have died-but i thought i would try and figure out what was going on. So here is what has happened:

1) error message came up a number of times saying there was a corrupt file on the computer (she didnt note down what it was and kinda ignored it)

2) when she tried to LOAD it yesterday it came up with that blue screen where it scans the system (possibly the c drive)

3) it then went to the following error message :

" winlogon.exe - Unable to Locate Component

This application has failed to start because COMTL32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application MAY fix this problem."

4) she hit ok and the following message appeared:

" User Interface Failure

The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed to load.

Contact your system administrator to replace the DLL, or restore the original DLL."

5) You then have to click restart and it goes BACK to 3).

This all happens before windows loads up and so my knowledge about computers (purely about windows) is completely useless & I would love some assistance!!

Cheers

DaveWhilst the pc is booting up, repeatedly tap the F8 key until you SEE a menu.

Select "Last know good configuration"

Does this allow the pc to boot properly?Nope unfortunately it just comes up with the same errors and restarts again.

CheersDo you have Windows CD, or Restore CD?

I removed the HD using the " Safely Remove Hardware" feature located in the lower left hand tray. Yet when I put the harddrive back on the first computer it dosent show when I click on My computer. I see the C: drive, the D: drive, the printer. Yet I dont see the HDD which was usually the E: drive. When I go to My computer/properties/device manager - i see the hard drive and indications say its working properly. If I go to
" Safely Remove Hardware" I can see the hard drive. Hmm? Oh and by the way I am using a USB hub. I removed the hard drive once again and attached it to my laptop which it was read and indicated the the device was ready, installed and ready to use. Yet I get the same problems as with the first computer. External HDD not shown on when I open My computer. Hard drive is getting POWER all power lights are on. Please help. This computer is drving me crazy. Now the external HDD is acting up. Arrrrrrgggh !!!!!!!!!Does the hard drive have its own power supply or is it drawing its power from the USB port? Is the hub a powered hub or a passive one? What happens if you connect the hard drive directly to one of the PC's USB ports?
The HDD had its own power supply but the usb hub does not. when i plug the HDD directly into a usb port the same THING happens. What shows up in Disk Management (CONTROL Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management)?I see my C: drive with a status of healthy in a section up top and some kind of graph below telling me the same.

Below in the graph section i see Disk 1 G: No media -BUT I ALLREADY REMOVED THIS FLASH DRIVE!
I also see DISK 2 Basic 465.76 gb unallocated.
I also see below representaions for my cd and dvd romsDisk 2 is the drive in question and it's showing up as unformatted. Answer»

Hi

I had a problem my hp tx2500 laptop it booted up but just a BLANK screen appeared so I took the covers of the hard DRIVE & memory card off and its the 2 memory cards which clip out by holding the silver clips in , now iv noticed the black plastic surround which has the silver clips attached the top of it has a small chip out of it and I gathered that's the problem just wondered if anybody could give me advice obviously that black bracket is on the mother board so do I need a new motherboard or can I buy a replacement bracket and how do they fit in is it SOLDERED or clip ETC I'd really appreciate the advice thanks Bad News:
From your description, it appears to be the RAM socket is damaged. It cannot be repaired & motherboards cost almost as much as a new computer.I agree with CC but you could try to run it by a computer shop and GET a price.

Solve : Windows Media Player 11 (sound disappears when I try to slow down playback)?

Answer»

I want to SLOW down my playback. I understand how to go to Now Playing, then Enhancements, then Play Speed Settings and have done just that. However, it's not working for me.

If I use this FEATURE EITHER with the little bar or by hitting "slow" the sound will go SILENT. Then, if I hit "normal" the playback sound comes BACK just fine. As an experiment, I hit "fast" and again, the sound disappeared.

Why does it do this, if the sound playback features are obviously allowed to be slowed down or sped up?

Thanks!

I think that's an excellent idea.

Anyway, have the bickering villagers given you a clear answer to your question? If not, in short there should be no issues. Picture quality might not be perfect and sharp, but it should work without any other issues.Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 16, 2010, 03:40:57 PM
whenever you approach a TOPIC with the attitude that everyone you're addressing is a moron WHOSE current opinion does not matter, you lose. It doesn't matter if everyone you're addressing *is* a moron. Very few people can keep an open mind about a topic after you have insulted them.

This shall be sig'd, my friend.

Had to get it to exactly 321 characters, though.

Actually, that isn't a BC original, I heard it somewhere.. took me a while to find where though...
turns out it was this thread:http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/17975/225731.aspx

posted by "tgape".

It also highlights that the Off-topic stuff that occurs is nowhere near as bad as some other forums... I mean seriously... it starts out about upgrading from w2k to XP, and it ends up being a debate about the finer points of trying to run a utopian society.

Anyway, regarding the original question, is the VGA out the only video output? (does the video card have anything like HDMI or something?) if so, you could always up quality by using a more efficient connector technology. It's already been covered that nothing will be damaged, but from my experience, even HD-TV televisions usually have a lower resolution then most laptop screens; it will be excellent for watching video's and movies, or showing others THINGS, but if the intent was to "FIT more information" on the screen then on the laptops I'm not sure how satisfactory the result will be.Quote from: bigal50 on June 17, 2010, 05:32:14 AM

He better get one. Or get his laptop fixed.

The above joker sent me a PM

No he has no usb keyboard and and feels sick without his laptop can you help me help him

(A sudden thought - is this a disguised "help me crack a laptop BIOS password" request? If it is, maybe the real OWNER feels even sicker?) (Or maybe I'm just too suspicious?)
Depending on the OS, you could use the Ease of Access Utility Manager. Press the WINDOWS key and 'U' to open the utility manager, then select the On Screen Keyboard option. I wouldn't recommend this as a long term option though. Quote from: RubiK on June 29, 2010, 03:36:26 AM

I told him to stop using PM's to follow up on forum questions when he sent me one. Guess he doesn't listen.

Solve : Do I have a virus??

Answer»

Hi all,
Basically I dont have a clue about computers but I knows theres definitely something up with mine... Whats happened is my computer started freezing a lot and I had to keep shutting it down incorrectly, I got the blue screen (tht says windows had to shut itself down) a few times. It seemed to be after I put in an external hard drive which wasnt working properly, but when I took the drive to be checked they said it was fine so not sure if its coincidence.
Since then its started making clicking noises, occasionally OPENING about a BILLION more of an internet page I open, the VOLUME control keeps turning itself right down and the weirdest thing is I keep hearing from nowhere SOUND from an advert, same one every time (and while on youtube the other day also HEARD a snippet of random music that didnt seem to be from anywhere either.) So now I'm just trying to figure out exactly what it is I'm dealing with, if anyone can help me find an answer I'd be so grateful!

(I've got windows XP, if thats important at all?)Sounds to me like a failing hard drive.
Backup what's important immediately before it's too late...You said you have an external hard drive that you connected to your computer... What about your previous hard drive? When you say external hard drive, is it a portable external hard drive? It may be a hardware or software issue.
