Solve : Windows XP product Activation?

Answer»

I have a dell computer SERIES E with a 40 GB maxter hardrive and I just got a new dell computer with a burner in it and everything. I tryied to put the hardrive from the series E to the computer with the burner and it says I have to activate windows on it and then it says product activation but on the other computer the drive is already activated. Is their a way to find the product activation on the hardrive and activate it on the other computer?because I know you can activate it online and by phone but I'm not sure if it costs money for an activation code any help would be helpful THANK youI'm suprised it even booted that far ...moving a HDD from one machine to another with any Windows product XP or newer is a crapshoot at best,,,
MS's policy is one copy one machine.

Did you buy a new machine without an OS installed ? ?

I don't quite understand why you would need a previously installed OS on a brand new machine...

At any rate contact Microsoft and ask them. It's possible they will re-activate you.You most likely were able to get this far because they are both Dells. Sorry to say, but you're going to have to buy a new Operating System. Or, you could research the subject. Well I have 2 Hardrives from 2 diffrent computers. I have a 20GB seagate and a 40GB maxter. I got the computers from work and I had the 40GB one first in my first dell computer but the case was too small. So then I got the second computer and it had a 20GB hardrive and a burner in it bigger tower. So then I tryied putting the 40GB one in as my Master and the 20GB as my slave into another case and it said that I needed to activate it. The thing is I have no IDEA why its telling me to activate it because both hardrives when they were in seprate computers worked and were activated. Now I tryied switching the 20GB as my master and the 40Gb hardrive as my slave but my 40 has all my burning nero software on it and I'm finding it hard to get it to my 20GB hardrives desktop so that I can use it so I'm trying to actiave the 40 to use that as my master I will try contacting somone but if anyone could tell me how to find the activation code posibbly in a file somwhere that I could use in the computer?Ok ok. You set your 20GB as your master in the "new" computer. Because this was the original state. They are both Dells, this is why the MB is even reading that other HDD and booting the OS. It's asking you for a key because it's trying to read the OS from that new HDD. You need to set the 20GB as your master. That's the only way your going to get out of having to purchase a new OS unless you have Ghost or something to re image that "new" HDD. Then you can image your other HDD and run the OS from it. Make sense? Basically, the OS knows that the HDD didn't come from that computer and it wants you to activate it.

Even if you find the activation code your not going to be able to activate it. It knows the original computer that it came from. It's a one time deal. One OS, one computer.

About your software that you are trying to keep. There is no easy way to go about this. You are going to have to have some IT knowledge in what kind of software can help you transfer this stuff. It's almost impossible. The OS on the 20GB HDD is not going to be able to read that software on the 40GB because of registry settings an all of that. Do you have the original CD's for that software?

If you are talking about calling a computer store to help you, I would save your money. They aren't going to be able to do anything for you. If anything, they will try and sell you new stuff with an OS and tell you it's all ok. On the upside, you have more space now! It is asking for activation because the hardware has been changed...i explained this above.
XP installs are tied directly to th hardware the OS is installed on.
If you changed the MBoard and CPU it would be doing the same thing.
When you contact MS you can say you had to replace the MBoard...if you say you are moving from one machine to another they will want to seperate you from your money...
This is the only option if you do not have an XP CD with a Activation key period.

rasilun,
An image still wouldn't work as it contains the same info that is on the HDD now including the HAL info
Just so you know...I THINK you misunderstood me about the imaging.

And yes, you can give MS a call to get another key if you word things the correct way. But, this isn't something you NORMALLY come out and tell people. So, I didn't...

Anywho, cheers!I don't misundestand you about the imaging...it simply won't work as you stated...
Any doubts try it in this scenario and see...

Solve : Computer powers on but won't boot into BIOS?

Answer»

Heeeeeeeeeello peoples!

My COMPUTER TURNS on and everything powers up OK, but it doesn't even boot into BIOS, the keyboard/mouse lights flicker once but then turn off and stay off, and it just seems like no information's getting sent out of the computer.

I've tried reseating every cable and component (CPU, video card, both sticks of RAM, etc.) in the computer, I've tried CLEARING the CMOS, and I tried every combination of starting up the computer with various components in and out as possible. Any idea on what I should do? Is it the motherboard?

Thanks mis amigos,
Danno
Well we know it's a computer....
And we know it's not working right ...
Other than that we don't have much to go on....

Solve : Windows XP chkdsk and reinstall?

Answer»

the system was giving me problems, booted fine but desktop only SHOWED background image not the ICONS or start menu.... so a long process FOLLOWED but essentially I ran chkdsk /r twice and succeeded in a reinstall (without formatting) of the win xp

now when I try to BOOT i get to that first blue SCREEN before logging on and it hangs, goes very slow to configure settings, etc etc whatever it says when it goes through that.... very slow like 25-30 min. Can someone help me I think it may be I need to shutoff the stuff that automatically starts like the antivirus and messengers etc. This may sound silly but did you remember to re-install the MBoard drivers after the re-install ? ?

Solve : start up problems and I have a screen shot.?

Answer»

I have windows xp and while playing SWG last night things started to lag so I went to reboot the puter. But when it started to reload this is all I get...

I have tried to get to safe MODE I cant get anywhere F8 dont work, Delete key dont work, I even put my windows xp disc in to try and reformat and nothing. That screen is all I get.

Thank you in advance for any help.I think maybe something on your motherboard has died.
i was guessing this is what I was gonna hear.

Just guessing, but it sounds like maybe -- just maybe -- something overheated? When this happens to me, I open the case, clean all the dust out, make sure nothing is touching the motherboard and it works again. Failing that, you're probably screwed.BIOS date Jan 2003... elderly hardware... RIP?

Quote from: contrex on September 01, 2007, 11:20:52 AM

Just guessing, but it sounds like maybe -- just maybe -- something overheated?

I figured it might of been overheat too. So I did a clean job and left the side panel off after everything was cool I rebooted. Even after that screen came up I left it there to see if anything would heat up. Nothing did. Both fans inside are working fine too.We are used to thinking that everything has a fix, and we only have to tweak some settings or download a file, but, sadly, hardware does fail, sometimes permanently.

If you have multiple RAM sticks, you could try with just one at a time, and you could remove some of those 4 drives which are hung off the motherboard at the moment. This might show up a weak power supply.

If you still had no luck, maybe something on the motherboard is kaput.

I agree with contrex...
A few other things you can try:

Replace the CMOS battery...bout the size of a dime on the MBoard Part# CR2032...available at any computer store.
DLoad and run MemTest...windows doesn't need to be running for this so even if it won't BOOT to Windows you can still run the tests. Let it run for a few hours. Any errors mean the RAM needs replaced.
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...ditto the above comments.

If still no joy borrow a known good PSU and swap it in there to see if this makes a difference. If it boots you need a new PSU.

p.s. All these tests are eliminating other possible faults and will narrow down to whether it is the MBoard or not.
Let us know...OK,

I replaced ram with good ram from my sons computer. No go

I put a new PSU in which I actually just bought for my younger sons computer. No go.

I unplugged all the EXTRA drives besides 1 and yep you guessed it No Go.

I'm thinking this is a motherboard. We have had some bad storms a few weeks ago and power has flashed on and off a few times while on line. Maybe it weakend something and it just finally went kaput.

Well since I have some great help here I found a thread earlier to help me reformat my sons HD, but cant find it now.

He has XP on his computer and I just want to reformat it and start fresh. What do I have to do? I have the disc and when I run it it wont let me delete the partition so I can reload all new. Thanks again for the help. I guess those web design classes and Photoshop classes I should of also taken some for the upkeep on puters.First you need to determine if the RAM you put in is supported by that MBoard...travel to crucial.com and enter the system specs to determine this...
2nd even though the PSU you bought from your SON is new to you it doesn't mean it works properly...try borrowing a known working one of the same wattage or greater.
When trying to troubleshoot a machine with problems it's best to reduce as many variables as you can. Choose which HDD you want to use as the primary drive and remove all the others.
Your XP CD should be able to boot the machine and partition/format that drive with no problem...if it isn't doing so post back for more suggestions but do the above first...patio, I REALLY think he has hardware failure.
recently one of my motherboards and processor went bust wen i tried to make a program work which needs higher configuration than wat i had.

its imp i guess to make sure abt that. my screen looked exacly like this and then it stopped working.

Finaly a enginner came and told me its gone. Quote from: contrex on September 01, 2007, 01:42:16 PM

I tend to agree with you but none of my suggestions would hurt ... just eliminate some probabilities.

Solve : computer won't turn on, need help!?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm new here. The other day I was on my COMPUTER and it was freezing up. I shut it off and when I turned it back on, it would get to the windows screen with the green dots running across and then wouldn't go anyfurther. I shut it down again and sprayed it out with canned AIR (as I have done b4). Now it won't turn on at all. The green light on the motherboard is on and that's it. I have a Dell Dimension 2400.

I did go out and by another power supply. Still doesn't do anything.

Can anyone help? What more do you need to know.

Thanks for any help!Dell happens to use their own design of PSU's...you may have wonked your machine by just THROWING any old PSU in there,
Can you post some specifics ? ?Quote from: patio on September 01, 2007, 08:44:18 PM

Dell happens to use their own design of PSU's...you may have wonked your machine by just throwing any old PSU in there

Yes. Dell motherboards and PSUs are deliberately made so that they only work together. The connectors look the same (they are the same) but they are wired differently. If you connect a standard PSU to a Dell motherboard you fry the board and the CPU, RAM, video card, whatever is on there. Forever. If you put a standard motherboard into a Dell case and use the Dell psu you fry the board and parts thereon forever too.

The only reason for this is to tie the buyer into buying Dell parts if anything goes wrong later. There is no technical reason WHATSOEVER. No warning is given. You find out when your hardware is dead.

Moral... don't buy a Dell.

Thanks Patio and contrex I'm probably going to have to replace a Dell mobo with another BRAND and didn't know about the power supply thing. You just saved me some major grief

Alan <>< You're Welcome Alan...
The sad thing is they don't do it on all their machines...there's no rhyme or reason to it at all. The real sin is in not letting the consumer know...

Solve : Access... DENIED!!?

Answer»

I just bought a new MP3 player today.

Its made by "Coby" aka "The Ghetto Sony."

Its actually pretty nice.

I'm running a Windows XP SP2 and it detected the driver and installed it as a "MTP Player."

The thing is, I'd PREFER it to work as a Removeable Disc (E: drive for me).

There's a driver included on the installation CD intended for Windows 98.

Would this still work on my XP? Is there any other way to change the settings so it would FUNCTION as a Removeable Disc?

If I can use the included setup, I'd LIKE some help....

.....Because whenever I click on a file on the CD to open it, it says more or less, "cannot open this file, you may not have permission to view it."

The REASON I'd like to have my MP3 player work as a disc instead of a "MTP player" (whatever that is) is because it can play videos under the .smp format. Only none of my media players recognize this type of file, so in order to add video, I'd have to use it as a removeable disk, no?

Or is there some sort of software that understands the .smp format??

Please help me!! I'd really like to add a couple of music videos to my new media player!

Thanks in advance for your replies.as far as i know, you dont need that cd,what for?what's in it?didn't your mp3 player recognize as removeable disc on that xp pc?
you only used that disc when you plug your mp3 into a windows 98..so the 98 can install the driver.Quote from: kuszmania9999 on September 02, 2007, 12:26:31 AM

Solve : Fatal Error Causing Inability to Start PC?

Answer»

I have a relative who has encountered a BLUE screen fatal error occurrence at OE-015F:00000013 in Windows 98. A missing file SYMTDI.VXD is mentioned and I believe this to be a NORTON Symantic file. My plan has been to either delete the Norton programme, since she now uses ANOTHER anti-virus programme, or at least remove reference to this file from within the registry.

My problem is that I cannot start the PC without the fatal error message APPEARING. I cannot get into Safe Mode without the message appearing. I've tried starting from a Windows 98 startup floppy using various commands at the A:\ prompt. I've tried starting in MS-DOS using various commands at the C:\ prompt.

I did manage to restore a previously successful registry with scanreg /RESTORE, but that hasn't helped to start the PC.

Short of reinstalling the operating system, I am running out of ideas and would very much appreciate some HELP/ guidance.

Solve : Cannot delete...?

Answer»

Hey all: I come up with 800+ tmp files when I search "*.tmp" but I cannot delete them all in order to clean up my system. Is this normal? That is impossible to say with so LITTLE information to go on. All I can say is that some of those files MIGHT be in use by a program, in that case they can't be deleted. If you want to clean up your system I suggest you take a look at CCleaner. This is much more efficient than cleaning up manually.

Here's a GUIDE on how to CONFIGURE it properly.

Do you have MS Office installed on this machine ? ?
Any Norton products ? ?Sorry I haven't been around for a while, have been away from the computer
If I'm honest I cannot REMEMBER WHETHER I did put in the CD for the motherboard, will have to try and find that
I do have MS Office on this machine
And I do not have any Norton products, I personally don't like them.
How might MS Office make a difference may I ask? Some Office apps pre-load themselves to a ready state. This can slow down the boot times...If you're on dialup and IE is set to 'never dial a connection' as mine is then Automatic Windows Update will do this to you.
It sits there looking to find a connection via IE that will never come, I set mine to disabled and update manually a week after Update Tuesday to be sure Microsoft has no issues.
I would think auto update would be the default setting and as it happened after a new install of windows... well.
The settings can be changed in 'services', you could prowl around in services anyway you never know, just be careful what you do.
Blackviper has both the defaults and the tweaks if you're unsure.

While still in safe mode run some spyware scans

And you could also try a registry cleaner...

For a real improved prformance try getting more ram just becareful there are several different types SD RAM, DDR RAM usually with two notches, one close to the center and one further to the side.
These are the physical differences, I belive DDR is faster but I am not sure, I know that SD ram is found in older computers more often so I am guessing DDR is better. but dont worry about which is better, worry about what slot/s you have on your motherboard.

You could also try a new CPU?:
The Central Processing UNIT (CPU) is responsible for interpreting and executing most of the commands from the computer's hardware and software. It is often called the "brains" of the computer.

thanks...I don't think you need a new CPU if you have a 2.66 GHz unit. The memory is a bit on the small side, but that WOULD not explain the 8 minute boot.

I would suspect either a failing hard drive or CPU cache turned off in the BIOS.

That was so helpful of you, Spero-T, to tell us that the CPU is the "brains" of a computer. I always thought it was the "lungs". Thanks for putting me right!

Steady on, OLD boy, ease up on the attitude, OK?

Not a problem tuyan come back anytime !let us not digress from the main topic of this discussion, according to your sys.specs, i would advise you to add more random access memory, aka. RAM. however, i don't think a 2.66GHZ 256mb computer should take THAT long to load.

open run : type msconfig > and check out your start up items, try unchecking a few of those.

and also, follow GX1man's instructions about running protection programs. It could well be a virus which is causing your computer to slow down..

So your trying to find a web PAGE? The site might be removed, moved to a new location, or it could just be down for matinence, wait a day, a week tops, and try again. If it doesn't work, it's probably been removed or moved, or something could be stopping you from visiting it.

Solve : Usb mouse doesnt work after coming back from standby?

Answer»

XP home SP2...

We just got this mouse, its a microsoft compact optical mouse, we were using a PS2 rollerball before and the ball retaining piece broke somehow (i wasnt using it)..

it works fine until the computer goes to sleep. then it wont wake up the computer, and if you use the keyboard, the mouse still doesnt work. the light in the mouse isnt on and using the scroll wheel or buttons doesnt work either. it doesnt work unless you restart the computer

Ive made sure the Device mgr and mouse properties button is checked to allow the mouse to wake the computer up, and ive also tried unchecking the box that lets the USB go to sleep to save power. the speakers are also plugged into the usb, ive found, but they still work when the mouse doesnt.

ive searched the site, the microsoft KB and the web and all ive come up with is that its a problem solved by sp2.

any help appreciated. Will the mouse work if you just unplug it and replug it in without re-booting ?yeap, i tried that initially, and i also tried plugging it into a different usb slot. no luck.

also, ive noticed that since i unchecked the box that allows the computer to turn off the usb to save power, it doesnt happen EVERY time. either that or its just that the computer has to sleep longer before it will happen.

EDIT: after TALKING with some other users of this computer, its not time related, but it does seem to be intermittent now...

EDIT X2: Ive also done the mouse troubleshooter including uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.hmm.. nothing?

maybe this is in the wrong section...Go and buy a USB to PS2 adaptor and plug the mouse into your PS2 port.
I's not worth the stress of fooling around with it. It's possible it is in fact the mouse, If it's that new return it for another one and see,,,but a restart fixes it. if removing the power unfreezes it, like logic lock or something, then unplugging it should have also done the trick, yea?Quote from: patio on August 28, 2007, 09:45:24 PM

It's possible it is in fact the mouse, If it's that new return it for another one and see,,,
If you really want it to stop, other than getting a replacement mouse you could change your power settings so your computer won't go into standby mode. However I would recommend replacing the mouse.good stuff. ill go with the audience, Regis, and replace the mouse.

I'll let you guys know what happens also check the "CONTROL Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager/ Universal Serial Bus Controllers/Root Hubs /Power management

"Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power"

untick this option#

if this box is ticked and the system thinks the device is not working it will be turned off

Solve : Power management?

Answer»

I cant get my computer to hybernate or turn off hard disks.
I have enabled hybernation in poewr OPTIONS properties.
Is there something I have to enable in BIOS.There shouldent be, Waht sort of computer are you using? It is computer I built 2 years ago,
AMD Sempron 2800+
PCchips motherboard M863G
1.5 GB DDR 333 memory
160 GB segate HardDrive. You say you have enabled hibernation... what happens when you try to PUT it in hibernation?
Also what version of windows is this?Yes I have enabled hybernation in options, and I can put it into hybernation manualy.
But none of those AUTOMATIC options does not work (STANDBY, turn off hard disks, hybernation), except that montior turns off after time I set.
I am using Windows XP Home EDITION SP2.Turn off hibernation.
Turn off any Power Saving settings you have.
Reboot the system without making any changes 2 or 3 times.
Re-boot and try again...
It's a Windows quirk.

Solve : Will not boot in safemode?

Answer»

hi my computer will not boot at all
XP sp2
p4
Mcafee virus scan fire wall ETC its from comcast

I'll try to get it to boot in safe mode and all that will happen is a bunch of LINES will appear with what seems to be directories

it will say disk partition(.) etc......

It also will not boot from the cd, I basically can't get past the screen where you select what mode to boot in. I do know that the hard drive is full so that might have done it?How long did you wait for it to get fully into safemode ? ?
This can sometimes take up to 5 minutes if it hasn't been used recently or if there are HDD problems.
Interrupting it is not a good thing.

The lines of code are normal. The computer remain like that forever
It will also not boot from the cd

cut my losses?No.
There are a few options...
1) Remove the HDD and swap it into a known working machine...jumper it as a slave drive and backup/burn your valuable data to a CD/DVD.
2) Check to see how to enter Setup...instructions for your machine will be at the bottom of the screen saying F2 delete, F10 etc...
Re-boot and tap the appropiate key repeatedly while the machine is starting. Once in there go to Advanced Menu and set the boot order to CDRom as 1
HDD as 2
floppy as 3.
Press F10 to SAVE changes and Exit.
Now when you have the XP CD in it should boot to the CD.

This is where it gets a bit tough but if you read the instructions thoroughly you should be able to boot successfully to XP with all your data and programs INTACT...

REPAIR Install of XP
I suggest reading it thru and printing out a reference copy for the procedure...

Best of Luck.

Solve : ~!! Windows Backup won't restore files!!?

Answer»

I have a backup of my harddrive and I tried to restore it after installing a new harddrive. The backup is on my 2ND harddrive and I'm trying to restore it to the new harddrive. But for some reason when it lets me choose the items to restore, it doesn't show any files at all. I clicked on the restore button and it says there is no files to restore. The pic is a better DESCRIPTION. Help!!

[SAVING disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]I feel bad that you relied on the built in Windows backup utility. It looks like there is no backup.
When did you run it and were there any problems with the machine prior to this ? ?ahhh ha yeah me too. Well it worked before because I reformatted my drive and after that I used the backup restore and it restored all my files. But I don't know why it won't work anymore Well I downloaded some free trial of some backup recovery program and it seems to be able to find all my files and the only problem is that they are trying to charge me $99 to use it. Doesn't seem like there's anyway I can recover my files if possible, un-format. no wait... thats impossible, re-format it or check with the product maker for a solution. maybe they will send you a new 1 free!!!!! and about the no backup thing, do you have the files on your internal HD?I dont rely on the windows backup program because it can constantly SCREW up your computer and it doesnt KEEP backups properly

Solve : Help with some issues please!?

Answer»

I have 2 problems with my computer when on the internet.

1. When I'm on the internet using the arrow keys for something, like a GAME, they work like they normally would, but the page scrolls at the same time. It didn't used to do that. What's wrong?

2. None of my CTRL+ actions work (CTRL+F etc), and links that open a new page (leaving the site from which I clicked on still open, and the site it leads to open as well) don't work either. I don't know what else could be wrong here...

Someone help please! This is starting to annoy me! Thanks to whoever can help!

I use Windows XP and SP2.Do you have like a logi tec keyboard; that requires drivers?NopeNo. 1 - If your window has scroll bars in it then the arrow keys will make it scroll back and forth. Try maximising the window so it has no scroll bars in it.My keybord is called:

Microsoft internet keybord. Not sure if it will help but oh well trying to give any info I can.

Model number: RT9411 V:5FTWXX

And the MAXIMIZING doesn't work. Would work for small pages but most arnt. They still ahve scroll bars.So can anyone help?Oh, forgot to MENTION, I use IE 6. If that helps.Try another keyboard...preferably a PS2 model.I will, though I have another computer with a different keybord and it's fine. It only just started doing this.

Solve : ChkDsk is continually cancelled on reboot?

Answer»

Greetings ;

I am getting messages to run chkdsk as some yahoo messenger and a few other files are corrupted.

I run a chkdsk /c/r at the dos command and it tells me; the type file is NTFS , cannot lock current drive and its USED by another process, would i like to check it on reboot.

I select yes.

When rebooting..it always cancels it saying again its NTFS ...

So I tried running chkdsk on safe mode. same thing happens..reboot and again the chkdsk is cancelled.

I ran spybot and the avg spyware remover and removed a few items and tried again..same thing cannot lock drive and is cancelled on reboot.

I also let the powerdefrag utlity freeware program run and it seemed to defrag a lot..but..i still have those corrupted files that pop up the alert of them in my tray.

So, how do i run and repair the disk if it is always being cancelled at reboot and it wont let me otherwise due to something running and it cannt lock the drive?

(I am using win xp home ed. on a HP celeron laptop and do not have any windows cds, with win service pack 1)

(Also, checking under "disk management" the partition is listed as NTFS and not FAT....and (Healthy) is shown.no one?easy there...... someone will help you soon enough ...... sometimes its best to leave your thread here for a few hours and come back and check later.... im going to have a read myself ...... see if i can help you out ....... just be painent ...

Tony Can you give some more details on what happen when you reboot and chkdsk is supposed to run? Does it give any reason for the check being canceled?
Have you tried running it in safemode ? ?
To enter safemode TAP F8 repeatedly while the machine is starting and before you see the Windows logo...Its just been a few days and wondered if it was lost in the shuffle is all..This is a free help site and I am appreciative of any help or attempts to that.

I have run it in safe mode..but on chkdskit still says it cannot lock current volume and needs to reboot to do it.

Upon reboot, it says check disk cancelled, windows has finished checking the disk...

The only thing it refers to is the file being NTFS.

I tried going into the bootexecute and changing it on the right to
autocheck autochk * but it always reverts back to
autocheck autochk /k:C*

I have done:
chkntfs /d
chkntfs /c C:
fsutil dirty query c: it says its dirty
chkntfs /x c:

then i rebooted...
then I:
chkdsk /f /r c: and selected yes
and ...no running of chkdsk....

Seems regardless what I do...it cancels on reboot.

Thanks
Jaitan
ChkNTFS will only check the integrity of the NTFS file table...it is not chkdsk.
Do you have it setup to run chkntfs at startup ? ? If so it is probably banging HEADS with chkdsk...
You may just have to pull that drive hook it up as a slave on a known working machine and run chkdsk from there...How do I check to see if i have it checking Ntfs on startup and if it is..can I select it to not do that and if so how?...without having to pull the drive?Ok this is interesting...i ran a chkdsk /c C: and got this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>chkdsk /c C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

WARNING! C parameter specified.
Your drive may still be corrupt even after running CHKDSK.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "")
from file record segment 53431.
File verification completed.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.
If you're running any type of disk utility e.g. partition magic, Norton ghost, virus scanners, etc. or you do NOT have admin rights chkdsk cannot be ran because it does not have full access to the hard disk drive. Booting into safe mode as you mentioned you did should get rid of most third-party apps. However, if you've used any type of partition utility such as partition magic you cannot run chkdsk.

Additionally if any type of dual booting (booting with multiple operating systems) is being done on the computer this too can cause this issue. When i arrived in Malaysia i had to re-install windows at a pc tech shop. I dont think he partitioned it or any is running but i dont know for certain.

The only antivirus thing i am using is cyberhawk ..but i dont think it runs untill the pc is fully booted and even then..i un installed it b4 to make sure...

I even unplugged my laptop cooling stand from the usb...

I cant think of any other apps...as i keep things fairly simple on this as its an older laptop. When disk problems occur that require chkdsk repairing is that part of the disk or the program itself. If I were to backup my hard drive onto another new disk..would the probelm be transfered into the new disk? The problem may or may not be transfered (most likely not transfered). If the problem you're experiencing is some type of virus or other malware if you transfer all the data from one drive to another it would transfer that virus or other malware as well.

However, based off your description I'm assuming the problem you're encountering is either a HARDWARE related issue or software configuration issue. If it's a hardware issue (e.g bad hard drive) the problem would not transfer to the new hard drive, some corrupt files may be transfered though. If it's a configuration issue, depending on what type of configuration issue it is it may or may not be transferred over.

If you're planning on backing up and restoring I'd simply suggest backing up personal data: e-mail, bookmarks, documents, etc. and not ALL the data on the hard drive.I'm not sure why you are running it with these obscure switches.../C skips sectors that have been flagged. The other switches do a deep scan but take no corrective action.

The one you should be trying is chkdsk /r...Ok thanks to admin and Patio..i will try chkdsk /r and also the backup ADVICE...

Solve : Help my computer shuts in 2 seconds?

Answer»

Well here goes:

I was online gaming yestorday and went off my computer about 4am, and went to bed, today I woke up at like 10am took a shower and went down to my basement to open my computer and then get something to eat.

(Just my life story lolz) (skip if you're too lazy to read)

*censored* when I press the power botton and went back upstairs it turned on like NORMALLY and then 2 SECONDS after it just turns off, so I check the power and stuff (not really the problem since it turned "on" then turned "off") everything was fine, I was just wonder if anyone know what my problem is?

Info on my computer:
-It's a custom destop (not labtop)
-I LEAVE the cover for the side open so it cools down better (my friend say because it's in the basement and it has humidnity)
-it has a P4 3.00Ghz CPU

I will post more info on it later once I find the paper I put my info on

Thank you all for helping and reading.Ok here it is:

CPU: Intel P4 3.0E/3.0C
Motherboard: ASUS P4P800 E Deluxe
Memory: Samsung 512mb DDR400 + Kingston 512mb (forgot the code)
Hard Drive: WD 160Gb SATA

OS: Windows XP SP2

Lemme know if you want to know more.

Edited: Graphic card: ATi 9600 Pro 256MbFirst thing you have to confirm is that you have a reliable power source. Plug the computer into a different outlet. You didn't mention what you have for protection. It could be a virus. Google Blaster.worm/Lovesan.worm This will also cause your computer to shut down. Can you start in safe mode?Ok first of all Thanks for answering,

And yes I am get a stable power source, I even check the main power for the whole house.

And the power thingy inside can take 350W, I dont know what you mean by that. >.<

I just wanted to know what you're using for Anti-virus program.I use some CHINESE Anti-Vire program, it's pretty famous in china.

You're probly wondering why, I share a computer with my dad. So we have a chineses version of windows xp, but I can garrentee that it is NOT my anti-virse.well thanks guys for paying attention, but I got it fixed some computer expert came over and found the problem. It was my hardrive it's being stupid, works sometimes and doesn't work the other times. Well all in all he SAID that it's starting to screw up. To verify his diagnosis you should DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. website.
This will tell you if it is indeed the HDD...Would this not be the psu ?

It could be fried if possible try a different one i don't think it's the PSU. But i can't be sure it's the harddrive either.

Is there anyway to stop this from happening? It will last for about a minute and then EVERYTHING will stop popping up and things will be fine! any help will be appreciated! thanks!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you know why Windows xp will have windows appearing and popping up
all over the screen MOMENTARILY all over the place for minutes on end?

This happens and I just stare
at the multitude of windows in amazement. Up down. All over. Left. Right.
The windows are just popping up and going away in seconds. After a few
minutes, Windows calms down and I can get back to my surfing but until
then, I have to PATIENTLY wait for them to stop.

Do you know if there is a known reason or fix for this problem on Windows?

How do i reboot?

Give this method a try. Click the "Start" Button at the LOWER left hand side of the screen. Then click on "Turn Off Computer". A small window should pop up with two or three OPTIONS. Click on "Restart". If this method doesn't work, your computer may have a restart button on it which you can opt to press.reboot is basically "restart", in case you didn't know.

and if none of the instructions michaelewis gave work for you, you can always go to run: and type shutdown -s. Afterwards, just start your computer by PRESSING the power button.

Solve : Help Please!!!!!!?

Answer»

hope someone can help, we're on our 4th day now trying to fix this problem.
the computer is a toshiba satellite laptop, model A100-496, when bought was xp professional, media centre
but the toshiba disk, has stopped working, so its now running windows home xp.

PROBLEM: norton go back, auto back, after allowing laptop to auto back it crashed at 30%, checked out forums, norton site etc, found software to download on norton site to unhook norton goback and then disable it, sounded easy!

well got the software onto disk, via differerent computer since the toshiba, wont boot or do anything, anyways, got disk put into toshiba laptop, gave 4 options, norton says to pick option 1, done that, went to 20%, screen froze and crashed again,

now it wont do anything except, we can run 1 disk, pc utilities, with disk genius on it, cant run our windows disk or anything, the toshiba seems to think our hard drive is a FLOPPY diskette, and has changed from ntfs to fat 12?

anyone any ideas, or had this problem or ever heard of it, really stuck with this one, tried formatting drive, nothing works

thanksWhat do you mean "the toshiba disk has stopped working"?please help me too. I keep getting this error message "cannot determine windows capture resolution. You must run the configuration program to set the video settings" How can I get rid of this error??Quote from: dbroghammer on September 03, 2007, 06:15:04 PM

please help me too. I keep getting this error message "cannot determine windows capture resolution. You must run the configuration program to set the video settings" How can I get rid of this error??

dgbrohammer...

As i suggested in your first post it's best to start a new topic so it can recieve the proper attention...it just will not come up on the toshiba computer, we've put it into 1 of our other computers and that computer can open the files, but the toshiba laptop it belongs to, cant read it at all, thats even before all the hassle with the norton auto backAt startup on the laptop and before you see the Windows logo at the bottom of the screen it will tell you the command to enter setup...F2, F10 Delete etc...
Re-boot and hit the appropiate command and once in setup go to Advanced Menu and set the CDRom drive as the first boot device, the HDD as second and the floppy (if applicable) as 3rd.
Press F10 to save changes and exit.
The laptop will re-boot automatically so have the Toshiba CD in and it should go directly to the setup screen.
Follow the instructions to restore the system to it's Day One state.

You will lose ALL your data and any programs that have been installed since it was new...
If this is not the procedure you want post back and let us KNOW...thanks but we are way past that part, the computer wont even boot up anymore, wont load disks anything, it just says invalid partition tableTry this link and be sure to follow the other links to tell you how to TROUBLESHOOT the HD.
http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/sys/booterrGBER31-c.htmlIt seems that your partitions in your hdd if any have corrupted and the comp DOESNT recognise it.

Solve : Trouble with safe mode in ME?

Answer»

Hello. Ive searched all through the site and I cant seem to find an answer to my problem. Ive got an old clunk that runs ME and its 'stuck' in safe mode. I am unable to do anything at all while its there, not even the mouse WORKS! Unfortunately I dont have an ME disk. If there is anyone out there that can help, it would be greatly appreciated My initial thought is you've had a minor hardware failure or a driver has become corrupt which is now forcing windows to boot in safe mode. check the system properties to see if any drivers have gone AWOL.

check the event log, chances are this will tell you exactly what's going on.

Starting Event Viewer
The procedure for starting Event Viewer depends on your starting point.

To start Event Viewer in Windows 2000, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

Selecting Computers
With APPROPRIATE administrative authority, you can select any computer in your network to view that computer's Event logs.

To select computers in Event Viewer: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the top of the console tree, right-click Event Viewer (local), and then click Connect to another computer.
3. Either browse to the computer name or type the computer name in the dialog box to view the Event log on that computer.
4. Click OK.

Adjusting Event Viewer Settings
In Windows 2000, you can adjust Event Viewer settings for a specific log file.

To adjust the settings for a log file: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file, and then click Properties.
3. Click the GENERAL tab.

Saving Event Logs
You can save Event Logs for later analysis or for use as historical data. The log files are saved to a file name and location that you choose, with a file name extension that is determined by the format of the saved log file.

To save Event logs: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file, and then click Save Log File As.
3. Navigate to the subfolder in which you want to save the file, type a name for the file, click the file type, and then click Save.

Clearing Event Logs
You can manually clear all of the events from an Event log when necessary. On HEAVILY used servers, it is a good idea to save data from the Event log for later administrative use before you clear all of the events.

To clear Event logs: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file, and then click Clear all Events.
3. You are prompted for whether you want to save the log to a file before clearing it.
4. Click Yes to save a log and clear all events. If you click No, the log is not saved, but all events are cleared from the selected Event log. If you click Cancel, the request to clear the log is canceled.

Viewing Event Details
After you select a log in the Event Viewer, you can search, filter, sort, and view details about events.

To view events: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file. A list of events in the log file is displayed in the details pane of Event Viewer.
3. Click a specific event in the details pane to display the Event Properties dialog box and details about the event.

Filtering Events
You can specify a filter that limits the type of information that you want Event Viewer to display. These filters only affect which event log ITEMS are displayed in the viewer.

To filter events: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Filter tab.
4. Type the appropriate information that you would like to filter.
5. Click OK.

Finding Events
Event Viewer provides the option to search for events. Searches can be useful when you are viewing large logs.

To find an event: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
2. In the console tree, right-click the appropriate log file.
3. On the View menu, click Find.
4. Type the appropriate information that you would like to find in the dialog box, and then click Find Next.
5. Click Close when you are finished.

hello

this month on 3 or more occasions when I start up my computer the message
" windows has repaired itself from a serious fault" comes up

the numbers can vary and are not never the same but the structure is.

on one occasion while I was using the PC it just closed down and restarted with the above mentionned message.
I WORK mostly in documents- photo elements- BANKING- internet IE7 and outlook express e mail
I have an extra disk Lacie for back up and use a usb stick to transfer documents to another PC.

I do use CCcleaner and Ashampoo Win Optimizer 2008 and once a month the Windows life one care scan
Is there anybody who can perhaps tell me why this occurs and what could be the cause.

Thank you for your time
daniel
I would just remove the offending 'tmp' files causing the problem (only in cases like this of course). I have had corrupted temporary internet folder contents before, and used to see a windows error 'balloon' warning me of this. Deleting the folder usually cured the problem.

Tony What I would recommend is if you right click on my computer and go into properties, then the advanced tab you will see a section called startup and recovery. Click the settings button. In there about half way down you will see a section called system failure. In that section MAKE SURE that the automatically restart check box is unchecked. I hope that helps with your problem. What is in the Eigenaar directory ? ?
Is this a PROGRAM or a personal folder ? ?
An interrupted install of a program will exhibit these symptoms...hello
Eigenaar means owner

Monday the same problem again namely:
while I was in I-tunes the computer cuts off and restarts after that the message "windows repaired a serious fault etc...."

Tuesday : after shutdown the computer restarts and again the message already mentionned above.

I was busy in my documents and copy documents to another computer via a usb stick SanDisk 2.0 GB wich is connected to a usb hub Belkin.

I start to wonder if the USB stick could be the cause or the USB hub
Each time the fault occurs I try to see what I was doing and perhaps a solution might occur.
Everybody thank you for your advice
daniel

I didn't edit this picture, I just saw it when I try to delete things from my computer. is it a virus???

WOW!!! the new crazy thing I CHECK this morning be go there and view the file
Run a manual scan on that file (not full system scan) and see if your anti virus picks up anything.

By the way, what antivuris program do you have? This folder is used to store the junk while WINDOWS does an automatic UPDATE.

To get rid of it stop the windows automatic service then RENAME that folder and delete it.

Then start the automatic update service again. A new SoftwareDistribution folder will be created at the next automatic update.Quote from: mektek on September 04, 2007, 02:11:10 AM

Then why does it say "Created: Sunday, 8 August 2021" I missed that. It is a genuine system folder though.

His folder maybe infected and needs scanning as suggested or his computer date is wrong.I bet he is from the furture

Solve : how do i know if my computer has a virus??

Answer»

at the moment, my computer will not turn on at all. it seemed perfectly fine the last time i used it, but now everytime I turn it on it makes a beeping noise as if it's about to startup but keeps making the beeping noise and nothing happens. The monitor stays blank but the light is on. How do i know what's WRONG with it and how can i fix it? thankyou! How many beeps does it give you?
Tell us more about your computer so we know EXACTLY how to help you. Brand, model, CPU, ram, hard drive space, installed programs, VIDEO card, monitor, and ANYTHING else you know.Without anymore information, it's nearly impossible to diagnose. But in these cases, it's often a problem with RAM or the video card. You (or a computer-savvy friend) should open up the computer and make sure everything is securely attached. Then come back with an update and as much information as possible.

Solve : Run Program @ Shutdown **Resolved**?

Answer»

Win XP Home SP.2

I want to run a small program at Shutdown, is there any way to simply include it in a Shutdown folder similar to the method of using the Startup folder PLEASE?

ThanksWindows doesn't have a shutdown folder, but you can find software that emulates this.
Here's one such program but it is only a 15 day free trial. HSLAB Shutdown Folder

You can also look into XP logout scripts.Thank you - guess I'll have to shutdown using a desktop shortcut.

You could try this.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/static/html/pc-tips-1.html
Thank you SuperDave. I first thought that the INSTRUCTIONS were precisely what I needed but I haven't been able to run any program at shutdown. I can confirm that the program in the Shutdown folder runs as expected when it is clicked on directly but otherwise no-show.

The only difference between the Startup and Shutdown FOLDERS appears to be the icon (see attachment), could this be the problem?

Further guidance will be much appreciated.

[Saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]What is the program you want to run at shutdown ? ?The program is self written in VB to collect pc usage statistics but .bat files or utilities do not run either although there is absolutely no problem running any of them at Startup using the Startup folder.

Thanks We would need to see more details on a self written program to figure out why it will not run in shutdown mode. The main thing to consider is that I have been unable to get ANY program to run at shutdown, not even the simple .bat program below which I've purloined from another post:

@echo off
cls
echo Windows Shutdown on %date% at %time% >c:\winlog.txt

This basic PROG will run as a .bat either opening it direct or opening it from a shortcut but I have been unable to get the XP shutdown process to OPEN it.

If you can get the Shutdown process to run this file or any other file before shutting down please tell me how.

Thanks

The reason the method mentioned here:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/static/html/pc-tips-1.html
doesn't work is because the guide isn't complete. Here is the complete guide on how to make a shutdown folder.
http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2206p160id115628.htmThank you Deerpark - all is done and program running without fault at Shutdown.

Good to hear you got it working and you're welcome.

Solve : Won't Delete Files!?

Answer»

Hello, I own a laptop with Windows XP on it,

I recently moved some files to my Drive E, with is where I write files ONTO blank CDs/DVDs

After I had written the files to disc, I went to DELETE the ones on the drive
But it won't let me!

Keeps coming up with the following error/MESSAGE -

''Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again''

Naturally, I close all programs down, so that the only thing open is the folder/drive E.

I try to delete again, but the same message appears!
I also can't RENAME or move them!
They are stuck there, I'm the only user on my laptop, so no one else is using the files/has them open!

I thought I would leave them there and irgnore them, but when I go to write files on CD's, they also write on there! Even though I only highlighted/selected the ones I wanted!

Can someone PLEASE help me?! Getting really annoyed with it all, also went to the official Windows help site, but they won't let me post a message or anything!

Usually quiet good with computers, but can't think of what to do!
I TRIED opening the files and editing so I can resave the file and then delete, but it won't let me resave them!Restart and press F8 to get into safe mode. Delete files and restart again normally this time. I hope that helps you out.

Solve : There has to be a better way!?

Answer»

I will try to explain my problem without being too DRAWN out. I work for a company that pulls credit reports and is required to document and scan each one. The way that we are doing this now is soooooooo ridiculous. People are emailing these to me, I print them out, they are scanned, and then they are shredded. This is WASTING so much time and paper. There must be a way to get them from my email or file on my computer into Docstar to be stored. PLEASE help!Has your company asked you to investigate a way of cutting out the scanning, or is this your idea? I ask because there may be good reasons for the scanning, legal and security ones I mean.

I work for a government agency where we scan every incoming document, and, sure, we could have a lot of them in the form of email attachments, but the IT dept doesn't like the insecurity of that, and we have to scan all the incoming faxes, letters and legal certificates and stuff anyway, and it proves legally that a paper copy actually existed and was witnessed by more than one person. It creates an audit trail. We don't shred our paper copies, we keep them for six weeks and then they go to a file repository.Yes there are better ways and easier ways. However, it all depends on your company's policies. I would check with them before going any further with something like this. It's quite hard to undetectably alter a scanned TIF image file, but it is trivially easy to alter an email MESSAGE.

Solve : Problems with BIOS / POST ( unsure )?

Answer»

I'm pretty SURE it's a BIOS or POST problem I'm having but here's what I have and what's happening:

The computer runs fine while in windows, but over the last month, this problem has been slowly INCREASING. I would shutdown my PC via the windows shutdown. I noticed one program having trouble ending during shutdown. ".net something" I'm unsure if this has ANYTHING to do with what's going on but it started around the sametime as what I'm about to describe. The computer would turn off entirely, but the HDD light ( the one that comes on while the computer is on ) would stay on. During the time this light is on, the power on button will not work. Trying to unplug and switch off the PSU would make the light flicker off after a moment, but as soon as power is restored to the PSU - the light just comes back on. After waiting for about 3-5 mins, the light would start to flicker and eventually shutoff entirely. Another problem arouse if I did not wait an extra 3-5 mins after the light WENT out. The computer would turn on, but during POST would stop at one of the screens ( usually the one where it shows you which LAN the computer is checking for an OS ) an in the upper left would appear red-backlite black letters, and they'd be random - the computer would not go further then that. If I waited the 3-5 mins after the light went out, the computer would start normally. After dealing with the waiting period for about a month now, the light doesn't shutoff at all. The first time it took longer then 10 mins was when it toook 3 hrs, and only after I took the CMOS battery out and reset bios. Now it's been going a lil more then a day. I might try to take out the CMOS battery again, and I'm thinking if replacing it would help. Any ideas would be awesome!

AMD 3000+ ( 1.8 ghz )
Radeon 9600 ( 256 MB )
x2 512 MB Cosair XMS DDR RAM
x2 256 MB Cosair XMS DDR RAM
MSI Mobo
Windows XPReplacing the CMOS battery is a good start.
I don't understand hoe the HDD light manages to stay on after shutdown though.
@ things caught my eye in your description...
First was mention of .net. This is a Windows addon that is required for some programs and advanced web features.
However Windows will run fine without it for the time being so check first in Control Panel/Add/Remove programs...if it's listed there go ahead and remove it.
If it is not listed there check in Add/Remove Windows Components in the left pane of the Add/Remove screen. You will need the Windows CD for this.

Secondly i would carefully re-check the HDD connections and make sure they are firmly seated.
Travel to the HDD manuf. site as well and DLoad and run their free diagnostics for the drive.

After this is done re-boot and see if the situation has been corrected.

Solve : W32Time error?

Answer»

I am getting a RECURRING error on ONE of my servers from W32Time. EventID:29.
I've done some looking (on eventid.net) but haven't quite figured out how to resolve the error. I kind of think that the server isn't looking at the domain controller for network time, but I have forgotten how to check it out.
Anyone know how to check it and/or change it?
I get that error message in the event log for my servers. It doesn't CAUSE my SYSTEM any problem though. It's because i don't allow the server to timecheck and update to an outside time controlled server which is what w32time is trying to do iirc

I believe their are ways to turn it off in the registry or such but I prefer to ignore the message for that one. From MS

Solve : RAN "SFC /scannow" AND NOW SLOVAK LANGUAGE?

Answer»

I ran SFC /scannow after a suggestion to help with another PROBLEM and now in many of my system headers and bodies i have a SLOVAK or other eastern European language. For example all of my WIRELESS headers and text are in this language and many more.

I have a legal ENGLISH installation of XP home with all update on a Dell Inspiron 6000.

I have a clean machine no virus no mal ware etc.

I need help in the registry I think.. This is NOT as simple as going to the control panel to region/language and selecting English.. I have done that...

PLEASE I cannot read this language.Have you tried System Restore to an earlier date? Have you also tried changing the language in the control panel?tried system restore... no luck..

tried language in control panel it is English.. no luck if i change to Spanish and change back. still Slovak in some windows. it is odd not all windows are affected just some..

like

wireless...

like hardware in system profile...

I need help I do not want to reinstall.....

Where did you get this copy of XP ? ?Gringo, this is a problem which is not supposed to happen. I found this link. It may not fix your problem but will give you an insight of what you're up against. Luck.

well i have heard this before, NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN but it did and it is a pain..

MY copy of XP is legal, came installed on my DELL I pass all the tests from microsoft when i download updates.

the articles you recommended do not help as this is not a KEYBOARD problem. My keyboard functions perfectly.. my language tab is ENGLISH this is not the problem.

this is in the registry.. BUT I have NO idea where.

other ideas.I'm willing to believe that your XP is legal. However, I don't think Dell usually ships XP CD's with their computers, and you need a CD for sfc /scannow to work. Where did you get the CD? Is it a legal CD? And better yet...is it an English copy? They also don't take the time to install the Recovery Console either...which is the only other way SFC can be ran.
I was WONDERING why my question was never answered...

Solve : Email notifications on the switch user screen?

Answer» HI guys just noticed this but when i set it to switch user in the morning so know one else can get on my pc that it comes up with unread emails from a hotmail email account i dont want on there and that doesnt appear in my msn messenger list, id LIKE it gone but dont know how to get rid of it? its ok for my main account but dont want that one showing, also i use switch user so things like AVG can work in the background while im at work

any ideas? :SI ASSUME this is XP?
If you just want to disable the unread email counter all TOGETHER here's a guide that explains how:
http://www.adelaider.com/?thread=7568

If you only want to remove the hotmail account follow the instructions here: (Borrowed from Microsoft)
Quote
To block only one of the e-mail clients from updating the Welcome screen, permissions to the registry key under UnreadMail" that specify the e-mail account must have System permissions set to read-only. For example, assume that you have the two following registry keys under the UnreadMail key:
[emailprotected]
[emailprotected]
To block [emailprotected] from being displayed on the screen and to retain [emailprotected], set the permissions on the [emailprotected] key:
1.Start Registry Editor (Regedit).
2.Navigate to the following folder in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
3.Expand the UnreadMail folder.
4.Click the e-mail provider that you do not want to be displayed on the Welcome screen.
5.Right-click the folder, and then click Permissions.
6.Click the System account, and then click to select the Deny check box for Full Control.
7.Click OK.
8.Quit Registry Editor.

If you decide to use either of these methods, I strongly advice you to create a system restore point before making any changes.cheers IVE given that a try This setting is in user accounts so have alook there

Solve : XPME will not boot?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimensions 8400 OS is Windows XP Media Edition. I run an up to date version of Kaspersky. Yesterday I installed a Logitech Communicate STX Plus webcam. During installation (with Kaspersky turned off) the puter got very sluggish. With the cam succesfully installed, I reactivated Kaspersky and went online. The sluggishness continued so I decided to restart since I had just installed a new program. During restart the computer will not boot to the hard drive in any of the safe modes or "to the last known settings that worked". I dug out the OS installation disc and tried to boot up from CD-ROM prompt. That eventually takes me to a prompt for an administrators password. I don't remember if I actually set this puter up with a password but I have tried every password that I ever used with no results. I called DELL Tech support and they basically walked me through all of the same steps that I had already done and said that I may have to reinstall the OS. I hope to heavens that I don't have to do that because they said that I will lose everything back to out of the box condition.
Can anyone offer any ideas?
TBWhen you say will not boot to the hard disc what exactly does it say....

I am sure you have tried but if not; try removing the web cam and turning it on.....

Make sure the hard drive is plugged in, try removing and plugging back in...

If none of these work wait a few more hour someone will be along to help
Thanks for the feed back.
Yes I unhooked the CAM and the internet.
When powered up the computer seems to be going thru the normal routine but after the flash of the DELL PAGE and the option of an F2 for set up (no set screen comes up) or an F12 for boot menu, a black background with white text comes up, apologizing for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
This page eventually gives me the safe mode options or the normal start, or the last known good config. All options result in a blue screen that says;
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent DAMAGE to your computer."
It tells me to restart the box if this is the first time to see this screen. Did that and eventually got right back to same screen. Then proceeds to tell me to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart. Well....can't run a check if Ican't get to set-up. it sounds as if there could be some damage to the drive or the boot sequence and settings, that is making the boot sequence FAIL.
have you had the box opened and checked all components are fully fitted into there sockets, molex plugs and eide/sata cables all fitted in the motherboard and the drives, and the Ram is fully in there sockets as well, check also that all fans are still moving at startup and then see if they stopping, check and clean any fluff/dust from in the fan cooler/fins which may cause overheating.

it is not a good idea to connect any usb components while the actual computer is powered up and working, it can cause short circuits in the motherboard, as the actual USB wire/contacts in the sockets/plugs are very close together and are easily shorted while plugging in.

is it possible that you may have actually put the plug into a Firewire socket in error? The box hasn't been jostled or bumped and I regularly vacume the in's and out's for dust.
I'm asking because I really don't know but if something got shorted, would it wait until restart to screw up?
I will open the box and check STUFF in the mean time.If something was shorted then yes it may not present a problem until restart, which is when windows would try to intialize it and be unable to do so. Also when you say vacuum you don't mean with an actual vacuum cleaner do you? I would highly recommend against that. You should verify your boot sequence though before presuming it's a short.Ok, have you check evey thing is pluged in... ram etc....

your hard drive may be corrupt? Go into safe mode and disable the camera software from loading at startup. Reboot. Post back result.I checked everything in the box...no problems found there.
Through Boot Menu and System Setup, I did find Security and set an Admin. Password but when trying to boot with my Installation Disc, I'm still told that it's an invalid password.
Any ideas other than a medium sledge hammer.2k...I can't get the puter to boot up in any of the safe modes. You need to set that hard drive as slave and get a new hard drive,or
put that hard drive in another computer as slave and copy all of your
important information to CD's then do the fresh back to factory install.

Could you manage that ?

I stand corrected on the virus scan not finding anything. I had aome errands to do this morning and after getting dressed, went down to check my post before turning the computer off. My avg was in the process of scanning and had found a virus called feebs. So is that the problem solved ? I haven't had a chance to get rid of the virus yet. The scan wasn't finished and I had to leave hoping to deal with it when I got back. Well, after I got back, the scan had finished and removed itself from view. I don't know why scans don't wait until you deal with them before they leave. I tried to call it up on test results but it doesn't show today's scan. I have to leave in a few and don't have time to run a scan again.Doesn't make sense that AVG would get rid of a test result...on the main menu at the top under Services choose Program Settings...the first page is the settings for test results.
I have mine set to save 60 days WORTH and they're all there.
My machine scans and updates daily at 4:00 AM.
Let us know if you have any questions...More info on your little bugger there:

This detection is for a new variant downloaded by the JS/[emailprotected] .

This worm bears the following characteristics:

* it is a polymorphic worm
* it configures itself to load at startup
* it creates copies of itself in folders containing the string shar (to propogate via P2P sharing programs such as Kazaa, Bearshare, Edonkey, etc.
* it mails itself by creating messages that are constructed using the worm's SMTP engine, and sent to email addresses harvested from the victim machine
* INJECTS a ZIP ATTACHMENT, including a copy of the worm, into outgoing SMTP sessions.
* opens a backdoor port (80, 40729)

This worm downloads the Win32 executable (W32/[emailprotected]) by the user executing the polymorphic script detected as JS/[emailprotected]

This virus arrives as an email attachment or could get downloaded with P2P software. Executing the file infects the local system which is then used to propagate the virus further.

The above is the latest info from MacAffee...

So you may want to sometime this evening re-boot into safemode and run all your protection apps again with system restore turned off.
Then post a new HJT log for a looksee. Thanks Patio, I'll give it a try.

Hey guys, I just recently installed windows xp, and was told I exceeded the number of times the Activation number could be used. I called to have it activated by phone, and was told it was now activated. SO my QUESTION is if I have to Install xp again will my current activation number work? No. It will need a new one each time. Microsoft didn't leave that gap.Quote from: i ekMo i on September 05, 2007, 11:25:08 PM

Hey guys, I just recently installed windows xp, and was told I exceeded the number of times the Activation number could be used. I called to have it activated by phone, and was told it was now activated. SO my question is if I have to Install xp again will my current activation number work?

pls read this.......
Activating Windows

Are you TIRED of choices yet? Well, too bad, here is another one.

There are CURRENTLY three ways to activate Windows depending on your version.

Retail Versions can make use of the WINNT.SIF method of activation, or use a backup of their activation file.
OEM Versions can make use of the WINNT.SIF method, a backup of their activation file, or use the originally included activation method.
Then there are Volume License CDs which you must purchase a license for which don't require activation at all.

» WINNT.SIF Method

This method is quite simple, however you MUST have an ACTIVE internet connection at the time of first login. If you do not have such a connection, then this method will fail and you will have to complete Activation manually.

Add the following line of code to the [Unattend] section of your WINNT.SIF file.
AutoActivate=YES

» Backup Activation Method

To begin this method, you must have access to the system you're planning on activating, and have it already activated. For home users this is simple, as Windows needs to be activate after 30 days, and most likely you're planning on using your CD/DVD on this system.

Once your system is activated, navigate to your system32 directory within your Windows directory, and locate the file WPA.DBL. This is your activation file.

Once you have located the WPA.DBL file, copy it to $OEM$\$$\system32 in your Windows Setup SOURCE. That's it, you're done.

Remember that if you decide to use a virtual machine, that this method will fail, as the virtual system will look different to the OS from your host system.

» OEMBIOS Method

This method requires an existing installation of Windows that has been pre-activated by a Royalty OEM. (If your computer was manufactured by a royalty OEM the COA sticker will have the manufacturer's name or logo.)

Locate on your hard drive the following 4 files:
•%SystemRoot%\system32\OEMBIOS.BIN
•%SystemRoot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\OEMBIOS.CAT
•%SystemRoot%\system32\OEMBIOS.DAT
•%SystemRoot%\system32\OEMBIOS.SIG
Locate these files, and compress them with MAKECAB, then simply copy the compressed versions into the I386 directory in your Windows Setup Source folder on your hard drive.

Solve : File Folder option not working right?

Answer»

My "File Folder" won't open when I right click it or doubled click. I CHECK in My Document\Tools\Foldr Options\File Types\File Folder\Advanced. There is three DIFFERENT commands in the action box; FIND, open, Openn. When I open a File Folder it ask me "Open With... Choose the program you want to use to open this file" How do I fix this problem of mine? If you could please help me. Thank you for your time.
... ... ... ...Have you cahnged or installed any PROGRAMS?What happens if you TRY to open the folder with Windows Explorer ? ?Is this a folder that you are trying to open or a document? I'm not too sure why a folder would ask you what you want to open it with. If it is a file...do you remember what it was?

Solve : SIS integrated graphics - causing freezes?

Answer»

Just recently, the SIS Mirage 3 integrated graphics on the family desktop have been causing issues.
The computer FREEZES up at random intervals, and doesn't UNFREEZE if left a while.
It doesn't respond to the mouse or keyboard, and the display doesn't change either.
It also won't shut down, and has to be turned off by holding down the power button.
I checked the Event Viewer, and I have an entry titled SiS315 when it freezes, and another called SaveDump when it reboots or is turned back on, saying that sisgrv.dll was stuck in an infinite loop and to obtain updated drivers.
I updated the graphics drivers, but it didn't help.
I also tried setting the BIOS to fail-safe defaults, in case some video related setting was causing PROBLEMS, but it made no difference.
I found very little info on this error on the internet.
Does anyone have a SOLUTION, or some more info?
Specs: Foxconn K7S741GXMG-6L motherboard, 512Mb RAM, XP Pro, AMD Sempron 2400+ CPU.
Thanks in advance.
Calum.Onboard vid chips can get cranky but here's something you can try...
First check add/remove for any program related to the graphics chip itself.
Remove it.
Then through Device Manager find any and all references to the SiS ( there may be more than one ) and right clik and select remove.
Re- boot and re-install the drivers when prompted. The best drivers to use in this scenario are the ONES that would be on the MBoard CD if you still have it around...

Best of Luck.
Oops . . . kind of forgot about this thread, sorry.

We don't actually have the MBoard CD, we were never given it.
What I've done for now is reduce the 3D acceleration to the lowest level, and it hasn't crashed since.
Obviously this isn't a great solution, but a friend is sending over an AGP card for us, so we'll use that when it arrives and that should stop the crashing.
If it doesn't, I've persuaded them that they need a new, legal OS (yes, this is the same PC that was the subject of one of my very first threads here - check it out) or a new PC entirely.
They're happy to go for the legal OS first, and if it doesn't help or if there are other problems then they'll get the new PC, and they won't need to buy the OS as they'll have already bought one.

Thanks for the help anyway, maybe none of that would have been necessary if I'd seen it the first time round.

Solve : WINXP Log in then Log OFF without loading..?

Answer»

Hello, everyone
My first time that I need Help, I can't solve this one.
I have Windows XP Home edition.
Apparently I had a VIRUS (win32.virtob) screw my programs. After run Antivirus and clear and deleted infected files. I Restart my PC and I have the PASSWORD prompt (never before) then comes "loading preferences" as soon as this end comes "Logging OFF" and return to the password prompt.

What can I do? Re-install Windows XP or Format Hard Drive?

Thank youBefore you format and reinstall you should try to boot into safe mode first. So it logs you right back off just as you are about to reach the desktop?Thank you for your replay kbm292
I tried SAFE MODE, still does the same "Logging IN" shows the desktop (w/out the taskbar)then "Logging OFF" back to password

buuuuaaa sniff. Does it log you off or does it restart? What you're describing is it is logging you off, but if it's restarting it could be a different issue. When did this start happening? Was it the first restart after the virus removal? Have you changed any hardware CONFIGURATIONS at all? Have you added software or removed software at lately? how old is the power supply? Are you comfortable with opening your computers CASE and making sure that everything is seated properly. For example the RAM and video card?Quote from: kbm292 on September 20, 2007, 01:48:41 PM

Just log off to the PASSWORD prompt, doesn't restart; no matter if I turn the PC OFF or Restart, after the password (left blank) "loading preferences" I see the desktop without the taskbar and then "Logging OFF" and again the password.
I just restart the PC after McAfee Antivirus finished Cleaning and deleting infected files. Even in SAFE MODE.Power supply is new; it's not a hardware problem.

buuuaaa
Try hitting Enter when prompted for a password...Thanks Patio
But ENTER or click OK is the same, bringsme to desktop without icons or taskbar then "loggiing OFF" back to the password.
I think I'll reinstall WinXP

thank youI have read the problem you have, i think formatting and reloading the operating system will be the best solution. otherwise try the followiing.

Windows restarts without warning.
Question:
Windows restarts without warning.

Additional information:
This document is about computers that are restarting or rebooting by themselves, if your computer is turning off and remaining off please see document CH000689.

Some of the below steps in the answer require you open your computer and remove hardware devices, while in the computer make sure you're aware of ESD.

If you're looking for information about how to restart Microsoft Windows see document CH000825.

Cause:
This issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities.

Software issue or error.
Hardware issue or error.
Heat related issue.
Computer virus.
Issue with operating system.
Answer:
Software issue or error
Errors generated by software programs can cause a computer to REBOOT unexpectedly or without warning. If you are running Windows XP see the below section "For Windows XP users" before continuing.

If you are not running Windows XP or following the below steps still cause your computer to reboot without warning. Boot your computer into safe mode, and let the computer run in safe mode. Additional information and help with getting into safe mode can be found on document CHSAFE.

If the computer is still rebooting in safe mode the issue is likely not software related but something else, skip to the next section. If the computer is not rebooting in safe mode it is likely you have software related issue. We would RECOMMEND you run through the basic troubleshooting section for your operating system.

For Windows XP users

Windows XP is designed to automatically reboot each time an error occurs such as a BSoD. Although this may be nice for errors that do not occur often, users who have a re-occurring error may wish to identify the error to troubleshoot it. Below are the steps on how this feature can be disabled and enabled in Windows XP.

From the desktop right click on My Computer.
Click the Properties option.
In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab.
In Advanced click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery.
In the Startup and Recovery window uncheck the Automatically restart check box.
Click Ok.
Now if the computer generates and error it should not automatically restart and enable you to display any errors your computer may be experiencing.

Hardware issue or error
Any failing hardware component in your computer could cause your computer to unexpectedly generate an error and/or reboot without warning. If you have recently attempted to add a new hardware device, remove that device to make sure it is not causing your issues.

Make sure you are not encountering any hardware conflicts by viewing Device Manager for errors. Additional information about Device Manager can be found on our Device Manager page.

New drivers can also cause this issue, if you have recently performed any hardware driver updates you may wish to try an earlier version of the drivers. Additional information and help with computer drivers can be found on our drivers’ page.

If you have updated drivers and removed any hardware that could be causing this issue and continue to experience random reboots, it's possible that the memory is bad in the computer. Additional information about testing computers memory can be found on document CH000708.

Finally, hardware devices that are not installed properly in the computer can also cause random reboots. Make sure all the cables and expansion cards are connected properly to the computer. The best way to determine this is to disconnect and reconnect all cables and expansion cards.

Computer virus
Computer viruses such as the blaster virus are written to reboot your computer without warning. Usually these viruses will make the computer reboot ever 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes after the computer has booted.

If you believe your computer may be infected with a virus or are uncertain if your computer is infected with a virus make sure your virus scanner definitions are up to date. Additional information about checking this can be found in document CH000533.

Heat related issue
Many computer today are designed to turn off or automatically reboot if the computer, processor, or other device in your computer gets to hot. If you have heard any abnormal noises coming from your computer recently such as a high squealing this could indicate a fan may be failing in your computer.

You can first start by verifying the fan on the power supply is working by examining the back of the computer and seeing if the fan is moving and moving smoothly. For all other fans in the computer you will need to either open the computer and make sure the fan are working (processor fan and case fan) and/or if your BIOS monitors the RPM of the fans enter BIOS and make sure the BIOS does not report any errors.

Users may also be able to determine how hot their computer is by onboard thermal sensors, if your computer comes equipped with these sensors make sure your CPU is not running to hot, additional information about how hot your CPU should be running can be found on document CH000687.

Issue with operating system
If after following each of the above recommendations your computer still continues to reboot it is likely that you are experiencing a Microsoft Windows operating system related issue that cannot be explained. To help make sure this is the case please try the below steps.

Reboot the computer and enter CMOS setup as the computer is booting. If you are not familiar with how to enter CMOS please read through document CH000192.
After you have loaded the computer in CMOS setup let the computer sit.
If the computer does not reboot while letting the computer sit in CMOS it is likely that you are in FACT experiencing an issue with Microsoft Windows and it is recommend that if you have followed all of the above recommendations that you reinstall your version of Microsoft Windows. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on document CH000186.

Have you tried logging in as a different user? I believe in Windows XP Home there is an Administrator account that shows up when you boot to safe mode that doesn't have a password setup on it. Have you tried to use that user?
