Solve : XP start up help?

Answer»

Hi all.

New to this site. I need some help with my comp. I STATED the comp, when I tried to open anything like the Internet or my spy ware program all I got was win can't find the specified program, or you don't have administrative rights something like that. Then the comp froze I restarted and got the win did not START correctly. So the screen I got was to start in normal, safe, last known good config, safe with command or NETWORKING mode. I tried them all & it just keeps bringing me back to the safe mode screen, it like it’s on a loop. Any help would be great. The warranty just ran out 3 weeks ago. I run win xp sp2, AMD 3500+ dual core, 1 gig mem.
Thank you Mike
What do you have for protection installed?

Follow this guide for assistance and then post your results, please...

Malware Guide Thank you for the REPLY. Right now I can't get into my comp, all that happens is I turn on the comp & it directly goes into the screen that states do you want to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, normal mode ect. I have tried them all and all the comp does is go right back to the same screen. Its like its on a loop. I tried F5, F8 I just can't get into the operating system. Again thanks
PS I have Trend micro, Ad-Aware SE. Re, Registry Mechanic & Windows DefenderMike do you happen to have an XP CD that says Microsoft all over it or is yours an OEM such as DELL etc. ? ?
If it's MS XP then boot with the CD in and at the first screen prompt hit F10 to enter the recovery console. It is a command line enviornment and you want to run fixboot and fixmbr...which will run pretty quick.
Then simply remove the XP CD and re-boot.

More Info on the Recovery Console and how to use it

Solve : Back with a new question or two.?

Answer»

A While ago I had some problems with my computer, I came here and got the problem solved very efficiently, so here I am again with another

I also had posted a topic for my girlfriend (a couple might remember), her computer would randomly shut down, and only AOL Instant Messenger would remain running. She had went on a trip around the time I had posted, so we could not do anything but wait until she returned. She came back, but I had forgotten to go to you guys when she did, and now I have no clue where her topic was.

She took her computer into a store to see what was up. They assumed the surge protector, or whatever it was the PC was plugged into, was damaged, because it worked fine at the store with no problems. When she got it home again, this time plugging it up straight to the wall somewhere else, it started doing it again. Upon taking it back, it was discovered that her whole motherboard was screwed up. So she got a new one, and her problem is now solved.

As for my new problem:

For some reason, sometimes when I shut my computer down, I get BSOD's before it finishes.

I have no clue what would cause it after my computer closes practically everything running, and I do have protection for my COMP (AVG Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Ad-Aware 07 [trial], and Comodo for firewall), and I run those regularly.

Anyone able to help me find out what's wrong?

Also, what's SVCHOST.exe? I seem to constantly have 3-4 running, and Comodo picks them up frequently to ask me if its ok to let them run or not.

Thanks again,

Imperial SVCHOST.exe is fine. A quick search on google reveals its official documentation. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

Comodo will ask you for a lot of stuff unless you tell it to remember that executable is safe. Whenever something injects into the MEMORY, tries to take control of a peripheral or another program it will warn you.

Have you tried running memory tests on your RAM? Download the .iso and burn it to a disk as an image, or if you have a floppy get the floppy one. Run the test through a few times on each stick, in the slot CLOSEST to the CPU. http://www.memtest.org/

Also, visit your Hard Drive manufacturers site and download diagnostic software to thoroughly check the drive.

What fixes, if any, have you tried to resolve this issue? When does the computer shut down, is there a common factor, game, internet?

Have you tried measuring temperatures either in the BIOS or with a program like everest?

A lot more information about your computer will be needed. OS, Memory, Hard Disk, Motherboard, Age, etc.

When going inside your computer follow all anti-static measures. Not working on carpet, grounding yourself etc.

Even if it doesn't resolve the issue you should still try Cleaning your computer.I typically shut my computer down when I'm not going to use it for a while (anything from most of the day and onwards) but I tend to leave it on overnight, so that my iPod can charge, and I listen to music on my comp when I go to SLEEP ( I have an audio cord hooked from this to my sound system).

If a game needs the computer to shut down in some way, I tend to restart it, and I've never gotten a BSOD for restarting the comp (but I have for generally turning it off)

My specs:

Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, build 2600)
510MB RAM
HDD is 33.6GB total, 26GB used, 7.67GB left.
Not sure how to find my motherboard (although I'm probably about to tell you without knowing it), but I've got a Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop, with an Intel Celeron CPU 2.40GHz processor. This was purchased for me Christmas of 02'-04' (I forget which, probably '03 though)

I haven't really tried to resolve the problem, as I'm not sure exactly what is causing it. I've ran virus/spyware scans and the like, but that apparently isn't it.

When I've worked on this computer before (I had put a RAM stick in from another computer [it once was 254MB RAM altogether, put a 256 in it from the other comp] and my current CD drive which has a burner on it), I was on tile flooring, without socks on.

From visiting this site prior to my current problem, I was questioned about my Fan's speed and related things. They had me download SpeedFan, which I honestly have no clue about other than that it had shown my computer's temperature at one point. :$

With Memtest, I only have one (plugged in) CD Drive on my computer. Will that suffice?

And 2 hours later..:

I had forgotten to post this (was doing multiple things), and inbetween the time, my internet died somehow, so I turned my computer off (this always makes it work again). It didn't BSOD this time.

Could that mean anything?I don't mean to be impatient, RUDE, or repugnant in anyway, but:

Can anyone answer the questions I asked in my 2nd post, so that I can do some of the things DeltaSlaya prescribed?

Thanks. You can use MemTest 2 ways...with a floppy drive or a CDRom drive...if you don't have a floppy drive then DLoad the bootable ISO package for CDRom and use that one.
Set the BIOS to boot from CDRom first.
Let MemTest run a few hours...Alright, I'll check this out tomorrow/Saturday (being the weekend I have time lol) and post my results when I get them

Solve : Can't get into safemode?

Answer»

What's up EVERYONE? I'm new here and also I'm not that good with computers..LOL, but my girlfriend is having a problem with her computer and I've taken all the steps I know, I will try to explain it the best I can:

When the computer first comes on it goes to a BLACK screen with an "F1" function for something like Simple start up and an "F12" function for.....Can't really REMEMBER, basically I'm trying to get the computer into safe mode, when it first starts up I "F8" a few times but it ALWAYS sends us back to the black screen I don't really understand. Hopefully I made some kind of sense and after that’s all said and done I am just trying to put the computer in safe mode to possibly restore it back to fix whatever error occurred. Thanks in advance for your help!
Welcome to the CH forums.

Please be precise when posting displayed messages.

I did read the rules of the forum, but like I stated in my question, I have limited knowlege on computers, sorry but I can't get anymore specific then what I wrote. If you guys can't help I understand.Try hitting F8 very rapidly and don't stop....you should do this before you start to see any kind of logo screen.

Solve : Starting Computer normally doesnt show anything but zoomed in background.?

Answer»

Running Windows Xp Pro ,Dell Inspiron 700m , 1.70 ghz Intel Pentium R processor, .98 Gb of RAM. Version 2002 , Service pack 2.

When I start my computer up normally , it boots and shows me nothing but a zoomed in picture of my background. I cannot access anything by pressing any buttons( windows start button , Ctrl+alt+delete) it work fine in safe mode(save the restrictions that safe mode has) , I have tried debugging mode which does diskcleanup , doesnt work , vga mode, start windows normally , last settings that worked. None has worked properly. Prior to this problem nothing was wrong that I noticed , Norton anti_virus is out of date so maybe it is a virus? RIGHT now I am in safe mode and all programs run fine.

I entered safe mode myself by hitting F8 before The windows booting screen showed(the one where it has the little bar with the dots moving to the side animation.) I have waited a while for my computer to do something while it was in the frozen state but it showed no signs of progress. I would LIKE to know any suggestions of what caused it and what to do to solve it , thanks. How did you FIT 98G of RAM into that machine ? ?

How long did you wait for safemode to load ? ?
I've seen this take 4 or 5 minutes on some machines that were not maintained properly...im sorry , not 98 Gigs of ram , .98. It took safe mode as fast as a normal computer start up would , around maybe a minute or less.If you are able to get into safemode you could try the following:
GO to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...let it run to completion and have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Then remove the CD and re-boot and see if you get a normal startup...Quote from: patio on August 21, 2007, 09:40:49 AM

How did you fit 98G of RAM into that machine ? ?

There is actually a decimal point, although MarinoM needs telling that it is customary to write a zero if the amount is less than 1.0, e.g. "0.98".

Solve : Icons appearing with colored background?

Answer»

Hi guys! If you look at the picture, u see that under the shortcuts there is black, now i would like that black to dissappear...
Is it possible?
Thanx, FilluX

Looks like you are either using XP in Classic MODE, or 2000

Right click the desktop:
Properties> Appearance Tab> Click the Advanced button
From the Items drop-down box, select "Icon"
If there are any colors selected, CHANGE them to WHATEVER you want.
And if that doesn't work, try changing your computers desktop theme. No color was selected, and i changed back to xp theme, then the color was nehind the shortcuts blue In the picture you posted there is no black at the bottom....has the ISSUE been resolved ? ?Quote from: patio on August 22, 2007, 08:27:55 PM

In the picture you posted there is no black at the bottom....has the issue been resolved ? ?
Black background as in the black highlighting on the text on icons. The desktop color is what will appear as background in the icons.Unlike earlier versions of Windows that only allowed a plain colour background behind the labels under the icons on your desktop, Windows XP allows you to make the background transparent so that the text APPEARS as if it is directly over whatever background image you are using for your page. If the labels appear to have a plain colour background on XP and you want a transparent background then open the Control Panel and go into the Performance and Maintenance section. From there select System and then go to the Advanced tab. Go to the Performance section and press the Settings button. The "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option needs to be selected.

If you still have a plain colour background with this option selected then right click on the desktop, select Arrange icons by and make sure that "Lock web items on dersktop" is NOT selected. Thanx guys!! Got it all fixed thanx to all the comments )

Solve : late windows shut down?

Answer»

can ANYBODY tell me why my windows xp 2004(SP2) takes much time to shut down ?Shutdown problems are usually caused by applications having a hard time shutting down.

Try this:
Make sure all your applications are saved and closed
Click Start> Shutdown
Click "Turn Off"

But, before you click it, start holding down the SHIFT and CTRL keys, click it, and keep holding it. Did it shut down faster like that?
If it did shut down a considerable amount faster, its a problem with the applications shutting down.
Remember: This causes an ungraceful shutdown, and is not a solution to the problem. You are doing this for the purpose of diagnostics, but doing it over and over again can cause data damage.

because it's made by microsoft.
check the startup programs and services in msconfig (Start -> Run -> msconfig) and uncheck the programs that you don't need to start automatically. Be careful when modifying these though. If you uncheck a necessary service or program, it can do bad things to your system. Start with things that you know you don't need.

This isnt a startup issue, its shutdown, isnt there some service manager that handles service programs somewhere? (I cant remember the NAME of it) ya but if there's a lot of programs in the startup folder, it will take a lot of time to shut down each one of them. If he's GOT something crazy like MSSQL and IIS in the services and he doesn't need it, that could be slowing him down too.
the service manager is in the control panel -> administrator tools -> Services
or you could just right click on My Computer and click Manage and find the services option in the tree.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=enQuote from: Fed on August 23, 2007, 03:47:58 PM

Solve : Startup problems?

Answer»

Recently my main comp has had issues with starting up. I press the power button , the hard drive LIGHT comes on for a few seconds , then extinguishes. Normally there's additional activity as it boots. The monitor light goes to amber , the power light remains on. I run two comps on a KVM switch. I've tried to GET into BIOS and safe mode , with no results . I did get it to start once , and it was fine while it was on , but this last time it just quit after a few minutes and I couldn't get it back.
This is what I've tried so far : Disconnected main from kvm setup , removed graphics card , checked to see if power supply fan is working , processor and case fan clean and ok , ran updated virus and spyware software last time I had it going , made sure no disks in drives , removed modem card , tried STARTUP with monitor disconnected.
The only thing I haven't done is remove the additional memory I added when I GOT the machine. The other machine acts normally unless I switch the KVM over to the afflicted machine , then I cannot switch back over.

It's an HP a832n 3.2GHz 2 GHz RAM Pentium 4 .

Please helpSwap in a known working PSU of the same or greater wattage...REPLACED the 300W unit with a 400W , aside from making an extra trip to get the 24 to 20 pin mobo plug adapter , so far so good . Thanks much for the suggestion . I'm crossing my fingers.Glad to hear it worked out for you..stop by anytime.

Solve : Does Microsoft Outlook have a Auto-Send??

Answer»

This issue is driving me nuts and I was wondering if anyone out there knows what to do....

Here is the issue I have. I am trying to get OUTLOOK to send a message to "user c" when "user b" gets an email from "user a". Here is a BETTER example: Our reps out in the field send an email to a "centralized email ADDRESS" it then moves that email to the public folder, (here's my issue->) I need an email automatically sent to the in house agents letting them know that there is an email WAITING for them at in the public folder. Now you may wonder "Why not just send it to the agent?" We don't want them to "accidentally" delete the email.

I see in the outlook rules there is an option for an auto reply BACK like "Hey, thanks for the email." But I don't see an optionto send a "Hey yo, youse got a email waitn' for ya!" to the agent. I tired to Bcc the in house agent on the reply back, but outlook didn't like that.

Reinstall your antivirus, it wont INTERRUPT with your webmail. Also, re-enable your Firewall, its not going to interrupt unless a server happens to try and access an unnecessary port.

Try reinstalling FireFox, and disabling unnecessary extensions, this may solve any errors.

Ummm... Just before I do that, what do you mean by:
"Do you have your data backed up ? ?"

That makes me worry. The drive diagnostics is not going to harm the drive.
However if the drive is failing that is why i asked about backups. There may not be much time.
A system i worked on just this week had a clicking drive that had just started the day before...it's dead now.Oh, okay.

Yes, I did backup my documents.
I'll see what I can find to make a bootable CD.

Either Intel doesn't have one or I am just to lazy to look at the entire website.Intel does not have one.

What is more, I can't do ANYTHING now.
Can't even open folders that I created! No, my hard drive is not failing.

I might just try a clean install of XP.

I have some .doc files directly on my desktop. Used to be able to double click and open them in Word, but recently the result was a series of 4 dialog boxes complaining that XP can't find the file. After clicking OK to each box, Word comes up and file is opened.
Now this STRANGE behavior has spread to trying to open files from Word.

I presume that some search path is messed up. Any suggestions?
This simply means the shortcuts themselves have been corrupted...right clik each file and select Properties.
This will show the correct path to the files LOCATION.
Then simply find the file in Explorer and right clik it to CREATE a new shortcut. Then drag it to the Desktop after DELETING the funky ones...C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Desktop

This is the file location from properties for .doc file on desktop. Note that it is NOT a shortcup to the file that resides on desktop, but the actual file itself.

I don't have Word right now, but I believe there is an option under Tools:
Ignore other applications
Make sure, it's unchecked.I'm using Office 97, but I did look under Options and found a tab for File Locations with an entry called "USER options" and blank path location. I put desktop location in and the problem went away.

Thanks
Nice job
One more thing to remember.

Solve : KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR?

Answer»

Hi, I'm getting BSOD at random times while my computer is running forcing me to reset the computer everytime. It happens more often when I am running multiple softwares at the same time. It's been happening for at least 2 years now and I still haven't been able to find out what's causing the problems. Normally I would be able to leave my computer on for weeks without getting the blue screen but it has been getting worse. Now it seems like it shows up every 5 minutes or so. Please help and thanks in advance.

KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR

here are some THINGS that I have tried already but didn't fix the problem:

 • Reformated Windows XP
 • Added a new hard drive and installing Windows XP onto that
 • memtest
Is the error message you posted complete, is there not a STOP code with it?

Technical Information:

STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC03DD0EC, 0xC000000E, 0xF743B2A0, 0x1336C860)

SCSIPORT.SYS - Address F743b2A0 base at F7433000, DateStamp 41107b4b

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

Also, don't know if this would help but sometimes it would display ntfs.sys or something like that instead of SCSIPORT.SYS.Does this machine have a SCSI hard drive installed ? ?
Did you remember to re-install the MBoard drivers when you re-installed XP ? ?Heres a list of drivers that come up when I insert the motherboard CD, but I'm not sure if I should go ahead and install everything. Do I install SiS AGP Driver if I already have nvidia drivers installed? There's no integrated video driver so I'm a bit confused here. I have already installed SiS Raid Driver but I'm not sure what to do with the rest. Thanks.

 • SiS Raid Driver
 • Make SiS Raid Driver
 • SiS Mini IDE Drive
 • SiS AGP Driver
 • SoundMAX Audio Driver and Application.
 • SiS PCI LAN Driver
 • USB 2.0 Drive
If you do not have a RAID setup or a SATA hard drive you do not need the first 3 on the list...
If your vid card is AGP then install those.
Check your documentation for un-installing the ones you don't need if applicable here...

Does this machine have a SCSI hard drive installed ? ?
You never answered this...How do I find out if I have an SCSI hard drive? All I know is that I have two hard drives which are ATA and SATA.

edit: nm my SATA hard drive is SCSI. Rather than risk giving bad or incorrect advice i'll suggest something else at this point...
DLoad and run Everest Home (FREE).
Save the report to a text file and you can copy, PASTE and post the important info here.lol.. the file size is too BIG to fit. I went into report Wizard and under Report Profiles there's 4 options. Am I suppose to CHOOSE one or leave it default? And all of them don't seem to fit so how should I send the text file? Select Computer>Summary from the left hand screen.
Right click in the right hand screen & select Copy All

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms793989.aspxI'm quite sure that this error isn't caused by the hard disks. I'm still getting the error message after I had moved 20 GBs of data to another drive on the network. It can't be the RAM either because I tested both RAM sticks by swapping it with another computer. Could it be my motherboard or CPU? Is there anything else I could do? Thanks for the respond.I downloaded SpeedFan and found out that my CPU temperature has been rising unexpectedly so I think that is the reason why I keep getting the blue screen. Right now it's at 56 and still rising so I'm expecting a crash soon. I don't understand why my CPU temperature would overheat when I'm watching videos or using a word processor. Does that mean I need to replace the CPU Fan?

I can't see any screenshot.

I can, it shows an Explorer ERROR message box which says "Socket Error #10060 Connection timed out." This is an FTP error! It means an attempt to contact an FTP SERVER timed out.

Zhson,

(1) You probably have a trojan (virus) if Explorer is trying to contact an FTP server every time you try to open a file on your local computer! Run your anti virus software NOW.

(2) In future, please do not write "plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" when you mean "please". It is VERY ANNOYING.

socket error 10060 can mean other socket connection errors such as SMTP as well. If the file (such as a script) can be viewed, try to see what's going on. If not, why are you even clicking on something you don't know?Quote from: contrex on August 26, 2007, 04:41:06 AM

Solve : invalid copy of XP?

Answer»

In 2002 I got a Dell pc with XP. A few months ago I had a friend of a friend install a new motherboard. In doing so he wiped the hard drive and installed an invalid copy of Windows. I have my valid copy from Dell, but can't install it because I don't have the product KEY. Should I bite it and spend the hundred fifty bucks to validate or try and reinstall my original copy? Anyone?I'd say call up Dell, explain your story and hopefully they'll send you a new key. Also, do you still have all the stickers on your computer? ONE should be the product key.If you phone windows , they will give you a new CODE ..... just click on activate by phone ..... or i can give you a actual number.... depending on where you are in the world..... and then just follow the steps .... it should say invaild on the phone and then they will ask you for the 1st like 6 digits of your code or something ....... then they will give you a fresh activation code...You may need the original computer RECIEPT to GET new key

OK When you log on a computer with xp. normally you have to get by the user password to access all applications, programs, I am referring to AFTER user password you will arrive on desktop. Then you will go to a short cut or look through start to work on your computer.
I am talking about where you could not access start button, it was password protected. Question HOW IS THAT DONE???So you want to be able to achieve what they have done on the computers at Best Buy?

I suggest making a LIMITED account and then on an Administrator account modifying group privileges in some way. I can't really HELP you though.

Thanks for the reply and help. I had found that SITE on microsoft already. The PROBLEM is that my disk is the original operating one and when I try to boot the message tells me that the file that is corruted is the security hive and it won't let me boot the disk, in fact my system just stops at this screen and I have to UNPLUG it to RESTART. It will load any other disk and will start normally with no problem, just won't allow me to reinstall my system. The warning message is the same as the one in the article except that the word config is replaced by security.

Solve : Micrsoft Excel?

Answer»

Does ANYONE know the excel keyboard shortcut for the format painter function?

Thx. Try going into the help window and search for keyboard shortcutsThanks, I tried that idea but they don't seem to have a keyboard shortcut for this function. I know most of the other shortcuts but this is the only one I don't know. googled and.....

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP052037811033.aspxI BELIEVE there is no keyboard shortcut for it. Many things on Excel's main menu have keyboard shortcuts, as indicated by a LETTER in the menu item name being underlined. For example, File has F underlined, indicating Alt + F is a keyboard shortcut for File. That is not true for Format Painter.

However, you could RECORD a simply macro to start Format Painter and then assign a keyboard shortcut to the macro.

Solve : Computer Won't go to Standby?

Answer»

I had no idea where to put this, so sorry if it's in a bad category. But bassically, I used to put my computer on standby every night because it's pretty loud (cheap fans), and suddenly I go to the "turn off computer" menu where you have choices to Standby, Restart, or Shutdown, and hit standby like I always have, and This time I get the whole WINDOWS preparing to standby thing, but When it would normally go dark, it just all comes back and it's like I never hit anything.

Windows XP SP 2

I haven't made any changes to hardware, and Have run VIRUS SCANS in this order
- Ccleaner
- Ad-Aware
- Spybot S&D
- AVG free
all are updated.

thanks for the help guys So, it seems like something is waking it up as soon as it goes into Standby, right? And, that's probably what is happening. The key is to figure what's waking it up.

I suggest opening Task MANAGER and take a close look at what's running. Try killing some processes before going into Standby and see whether you can find what's causing it.

I think you could possible have some MALWARE that's not detected by any of the maintenance tools you listed. You may need to post a HijackThis log if you can't identify the culprit by using Task Manager.

Solve : Question on reinstalling system?

Answer»

This feels like the 1000TH TIME I have typed these WORDS, or the gist of them, on this forum...

When you say it "isn't working", what do you mean exactly? can you describe what you did, what happened, what MESSAGES you saw, etc, because just saying "it isn't working" doesn't exactly help us very much.

E.g. did you SET CD-ROM boot in the BIOS, was the disk detected, did it boot, what did you see on the screen, how could you tell it "wasn't working" etc.

If you don't feel capable of doing that, maybe you should call the pros at emachines support?

Solve : track down the growth of disk space?

Hi,

Just WONDER if i COULD get some help here. My question is if there is a software that i could use to keep track of the growth of the SIZE of C drive. What happens is that sometimes the size of C drive can skyrocket by 2 GB. If there is a third party software that could DETERMINE which files/doc under which folder have actually used up the volume of the disk space. Then, we can deal with it. i have tried to google what i wanted but to no avail.

Thank you in advanceCan you identify what programs are running, or have been run, when this usage INCREASES and what do you do to bring it back down.

Are you running a program which generates lots of temporary files without deleting them before the program closes

Solve : Windows can't detect any sound devices?

Answer»

I recently moved my PC. I packed it up and set it up again, and connected all my peripherals. Everything works fine except my sound card. Its a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS Gamer edition card I bought in 2003. It has never given me any problems. When I booted up after I set up my computer it worked for like 2 minutes then all of a sudden stopped. I reinstalled all the applications and drivers FOUND on Creative's CDs that came with my sound card. I even updated the drivers. The thing is that I dont think it is the card. I can play the sample DVD Audio file that comes up on the splash screen when my PC boots up. When I run dxdiag I can play sound when I hit the "Test Direct Music Option." However, I can't play any direct sounds including cd playback, audio playback, or midi playback.....in short I have no sound at all, not even the system sounds. I tried installing my motherboard sound drivers...did not fix the problem. I THINK IT'S A WINDOWS PROBLEM. When I run Control Panel and look at Sounds and Audio Devices everything is grayed out. There are no playback devices listed as default. My sound card is listed under audio devices in the device manager which means the drivers are installed. I can't run Audio HQ. The error message says that I'm missing some audio driver. I can't run any of the SoundBlaster software. When I try to run THX console it says that I have an incompatible sound driver.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THE IN-BOX AUDIO DRIVERS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO COME WITH WINDOWS? I think mine got corrupted or overwritten somehow. I tried searching microsoft's sites but I have no clue where they are. The only thing I can think of now is upgrading from Home to Professional edition to get the new drivers. HELP ANYONE?Try-These-Drivers Thanx...but no DICE. I tried all the Audigy2ZS drivers out there including the brand new ones from their site that are even more up to date than the ones you gave me. I really think that it's a Windows problem. Here is a post from someone else that adresses my problem and a possible solution:

Joker08 ~ Your issue stems from SP2 and Windows C-Media Audio '97. This problem is a result of new C-Media driver(s) pushed from SP2 update. To my knowledge MS hasn't resolved their SP 2 C-Media corrupted patch. When you try to uninstall:[right click my computer > Manage > Devices >] do you see any device errors? If not when you uninstall all of your audio devices and reboot the problem still exists. If you can't roll back the driver, the new push from SP 2 reloads and the problem is more frustrating than before because that should have fixed the problem. INORDER to "fix" the problem you will have to edit the registry. When you go to Control Panel to sounds and audio, are the speaker settings "grayed out"? Do you see Realtek AC97 Audio displayed? If any of this sounds like your issue let me know and I'll give you a registry edit....

Can I try to solve this some other WAY than a regedit? I know that it is risky. Can I upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro to solve my problem?http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VIA_Vinyl_Audio_Codec.htm

try this.Does your computer even recognize the sound card??

if not, then it would definetaly be worthwhile to open up the computer case and try to reseat the sound card.I'm sure that the computer recognizes the card. It can even play the DVD Audio sample from the splash scren that comes up after I install the card. My Creative Audio speakers are plugged into the ports in the back of the card and sound plays when I play the sample. The problem is windows. All I can think of now is reinstalling windows. I don't mind WIPING my drive but I don't want to spend the money on a new OS. I have my disk but not the key. Is there any way of finding out the CD key from my installed Windows?Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Let it run til it finishes.
This does not require o product code key
Re-boot and see what happens...i remember that this problems occured to a number of computers using creative sound cards.

i re-call it was something to do with your sound settings.

check the sound output.

i rememeber there were a few choices and only one of them worked.

sorry for being so vague, but i think it's worth a shot.

i have a file that i have no NEED for anymore as i have already used it. but i can;t get rid of it. everytime i try and delete it, it keeps saying that the file can't be deleted because it is being used by another progrsm.

I have tried getting rid of it in safe mode. I have removed all possible programs it can be linked to and i have tried modifing the file to no avail.

i want to get rid of it because it is taking up room.

any help would be great.

ThanksWhat exactly is the file?
If you're absolutely sure you don't need it, give Pocket KillBox a try.no i don't need it and thanks i'll try THATTHAT program didn't work either. but thanks anywayThis is starting to sound a bit like an infection...
What protection do you have? And what OS is on your computer?

You can search for the file with Process Explorer to see what program is using it.coupled with file monitor , you MIGHT be able to find which processes is holding onto the file.. a .bin file is a disc image file (like an iso) and you say you can't delete it... Do you by chance have any kind of virtual disc drive software installed (Daemon Tools, Nero ImageDrive, ETC) and have you remembered to unmount the .bin file?if you REALLY want to get rid off it use a program called unlocker

Solve : Clean off and reformat drives??

Answer»

I tried searching through the past posts for this answer and did not find one, so here goes:

I am sending a Dell lease laptop back to Dell and I would like to clean and erase everything off the drives. There is nothing criminal, we used this as an office laptop so there are personnel and payroll, taxes, and sensitive stull like that on the system. I BELIEVE I have all of the data backed up and off. I have ALSO made a print screen with date hack on the Cdrive and desktop showing Dell that the system is and was completetly functional prior to and up to the time of the cleaning the HD.

I see that upon opening My computer then going to the C drive and right clicking, I have the option to format then it gives a couple of different examples ie. fat 32 or nfts etc.

Can someone please give me the final instructions for cleaning or erasing this drive.

ThanksI don't think Format will proceed regardless of which file system you select because you'd be ASKING your Operating System to commit hara kiri and it won't do that.

Do you have a bootable XP disk from which you could format the hard drive?

There are third party programs (such as Killdisk) which will delete the contents of your hdd, and others (such as Window Washer) which will write ZEROS to unused space on your hdd, the latter to be run after deleting all data files.

Hi,

use Windows XP(Not SP2) disk for reformating. And once Winodws Xp is installed then use Win XP Sp2 to in upgrade mode to upgrade.

My XP SP2 cd isnt bootable. BUt my XP disc is bootable. This method worked for me a couple of days back.

Make sure u select the default booting device as ur CD drive from Windows Setup.

hope this helps
ThanksThank you both very much..........

Solve : My screen is like... split down the middle?

Answer»

I really have no idea what happened or how it got that way. I woke up, turned on the computer and it was like this.

I tried to take a screenshot but it came out normal. It's split with a black line horizontally ACROSS the screen, with the BOTTOM STARTING at the middle, running up and then disappearing and then the top showing up at the bottom, if that makes sense.

Can anyone HELP me please?

Solve : help!! reformatting computer with windows xp?

Answer»

I have windows xp on my dell and I need to reformat the hardrive so I can wipe out the information on it to get rid of the computer. When I put the reinstallation Cd fot xp home edition, it tells me there is a newer version of xp on the computer and wont let me CONTINUE?

ANy suggestions how to reformat or how to wipe out hardrive???

Thanks, ChrisIf you just want to wipe the hard drive clean I would suggest DBAN. This is the tool to use if you are getting rid of a computer/hard drive and want to be fairly certain the new users can't RECOVER any of your data.I went out and lownloaded DBAN...as I didn't have a floppy large enough to use, I tried copying to a CD (the ISO image)...I then downloaded CD burner XP pro as my cd burner didn't burn image copy. When trying to run it on the laptop I'm trying to clean, the laptop gave an error of needing a program like winimage.(as it couldn't read the DBAN program) I then downloaded that and the winimage keeps extracting the FILES but I cannot run the execution program...

What in the heck did I do wrong? One fellow suggested RUNNING Windows washer? and I think there was another program that might be easier ?

Thanks in advance, Follow the INSTRUCTIONS in CDBurnerXP Pro on making a CD bootable...just copying and burning an .iso won't cut it...Another question regarding same:

I reformatted with killdisk, then used the XP setip disk I made, and the laptop defaults to A:\, Dir shows files I assume are the bootup files? Anyway, what do I do next? Do I know change the setup to read a CD and put the REinstallation XP CD in? I tried that, and kept getting a NO BOOTABLE DEVICES--STRIKE F1 TO RETRY REBOOT F2 FOR SETUP UTILITY...

THANKS,

Solve : Windows display issue?

Answer»

I have a computer that doesn't show all the tabs when you open the display properties in the normal mode. When you boot into Safe Mode all the tabs show fine.

I've:
1. replaced the video card
2. gone back to a restore point
3. UPDATED the BIOS
all with the same results.

Any ideas?

ALAN <>< The LAST time i saw this Alan the person had 3 different branded vid card drivers installed...this is how she tried to fix her own machine.
Check what's listed in Control Panel...Patio,

This is a Dell Dimension 5150 that had to have the motherboard replaced some time ago. After it was replaced I reformatted/reinstalled the OS (XP Pro). After the reinstall I checked DM and there was (2) Intel ? (don't remember right now...long day...hungry...tired...etc.) video cards (on-board) with the yellow dot/black exclamation point) next to them both. At that time I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell with no success.

Last week I did what was in the initial post. Now that Pony PCI-E card does the same thing. I booted to SM & checked DM there and all that shows up is the current Pony card.

I'm GOING back next week (got to have a colonoscopy done this Friday afternoon) so the rest of this week is out. I'm going to put Acronis on his system / create and save an image / wipe his drive and reinstall the OS. I don't think this is going to help but I've run out of options. Personally, I thing the replacement motherboard Dell sent is a dud. Unfortunately it's out of warranty so I don't think he'll GO for a replacement. We'll see. More to come...

Alan <>< I think your assesment may be true on the board.

Best of Luck this week and seeya when you get back.

Regards.

Solve : Problems with firewall and antivirus installations and scans?

Answer»

Norman Internet Control v5.9 was installed on one machine, with the Windows firewall being turned off, since the Norman Personal Firewall is part of the Norman software. There have been a lot of problems with this FAMILY computer, it freezes and gives error messages while scanning for virus, both online SCANS and while scanning without any network connection. I uninstalled the NIC software, to try the AVG Freeware.

Before installing the AVG software I used CCleaner with default settings to clean registry and temp. The AVG installation was done as Administrator in Safe Mode. At the end of the installation an error message popped up telling me a service could not be run. I restarted and turned on the Windows Firewall. Now the Security Center tells me I’m using two firewalls and no Antivirus. Switching off the Windows Firewall it says I am using Norman Personal Firewall.

The problem is I can not find any Firewall or Antivirus installed anywhere, not in the Add Remove Control Panel, not under the Start menu and no folder names associated with either Norman Personal Firewall or AVG Freeware.

PC info: Tundra Workstation, MS Windows XP Build 2600 Service PACK 2, AMD Athlon XP 2100+, 512 MB RAM, Connect 3D Radeon 9600 Series.

I probably don’t have any Antivirus protection! What to do? Please help!
I've also had issues with the security center reporting things invalidly, ie protection software that was long gone or changed.

I don't know how to fix it unfortunately, though if you want to test whether your antivirus is functioning you could see what AVG itself is telling you and also, try download the TEST virus from here, may I stress test.

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htmI managed to (re)install the AVG Freeware logged on as main user, not in Safe Mode, and finally managed to scan the computer. No freezing or getting a bunch of error messages.

Don’t know if it was the double firewall issue or Norman Antivirus software creating all the trouble. But there is still this problem with the Security Center telling me that Norman Personal Firewall v 1.4 is running, and I don’t know how to get rid of it. Neither do I know if I can use the Windows Firewall together with the hidden or not installed phantom of the previously used Norman software.
Have a Read Here...I could not use the Norton Removal Tool, since I’m not sure which product or version of Norton that has been installed on the machine. And my problem is Norman not Norton. But, thank you anyway. There where traces of an earlier installation of Norton on this machine.

I still have the problem with Security Center telling me I am using more than one firewall if the Microsoft Windows Firewall is turned on. Turned off, it says: Norman Personal Firewall v 1.4 is CURRENTLY on. Don’t know what is best to use if I can’t get rid off the incorrect message, having the Windows Firewall on or off?

I searched for files and folders, and the Register, for Norton, Symantec and Norman, and could delete all except the following which I was not allowed to delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_NAVAPSVC\0000

Solve : Is this fixable??

Answer»

I tried to turn my COMPUTER on today (not this one) and the following message came up:

We apologize for the INCONVENIENCE, but Windows did not start properly. A recent hardware or software change my have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automiatically shut own to protect your FILES and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to rever to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressd, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Norally
[/b]

I tried all of the above options and nothing has worked. I have too much information on this computer to have to start from scratch, is there any way to pull my files off even if I DO have to reimage?

Any information would be greatly appreciated...i'm desperate..thanks. slave the HARDRIVE to another computer

Solve : Wallpaper is not showing!?

Answer»

My wallpaper stopped showing one day for some odd reason. So I went to Task Manager and ended EXPLORER.EXE and my wallpaper came back but all my desktop icons and taskbar disappeared!
Can you guys help me fix this? I'm running Windows XP Pro. Have you restarted your computer since this happened?Yes, I have. And when I go to the Display Panel in the Control Panel. I can't change the wallpaper, the Change wallpaper window is frozen.Well, let's GET our terminology straight so that we're sure we're on the same wave length. Here's a screen print of my Display Properties panel. Wallpaper = background, RIGHT? And, where is the "Change" button?

Can you post a screen print of your panel?right click on the desktop

properties

go to the settings tab, and change your color to 16bit.My Desktop Background is not showing. Just some white background.

I went to Task Manger and ended the Process EXPLORER.EXE and my background came up but my desktop icons and Task bar disappeared.

I tried changing the background but the circled area is unselectable.

And Changing it to 16 Bit Mode did not help either. when you say 'unselectable', do you mean like ...you click but nothing happens? or do you mean that you are unable to change your background?I have the same problem. The button won't work, I click but nothing happens. This HAPPEND after I went to a web site, and it shut down improperly.

you didn't do the same by any chance did you?

you could try a system restore, and see if that helps.
I went to the system restore, and it is maxed out and there is no change. What can I do next.are all of your users like this?

if not, make another one admin.

delete your the user which experiences the problems, and recreate one using you're other admin.

see if that helps.May not help but you could try it

Clearing my user account was the answer, I wish I would got the last e-mail sooner so I would have been able to check that as well. However my wallpaper is back. Great job to all of you, it is wonderful that we have tools or people to help US comuter idiots outs. My GOAL is to be computer savy like those of you out there. I just want to thank you a lot.glad to be of assistance.

Solve : Reduce Icon and Window size?

Answer»

Hi Guys,
Newbie here. Looks like a great site, hope you can help me. My computer froze yesterday and I TRIED to ctr-alt-del to restart - it still didn't respond. So I had to do the 6 second hold in JOB on the start button. I left it for a while then turned on and all of the icons and windows were LARGER. I left it for a while then turned off for the night. When I turned on this morning they were all still huge and I don't know how to resize them back to what they were. I am a complete beginner at computer troubleshooting.
I hope one of you can help me - but - be gentle - .please!
Tish xRight click----> Properties--->Setting---> then near the bottom you will see a slider to make your SCREEN more or less , you want to go with more... then click ok.....

your icons etc should return to normal

Wow! Quick reply! That did the trick.

Thank you so much No swet !
