Solve : SHortcut Arrow Disappeared?

Answer»

How Do I RESTORE the icon shortcut arrows in Windows XP. I don't know how they disappear. tweak ui is no help. What I need is the Exact method of restoring the shortcut arrow from the registry. PLEASE Help...
******please backup the registry before attempting any changes

try this

Shortcut Arrows Registry locations

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\IsShortcut
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile\IsShortcut

Delete these values if you want to remove the arrow that appears on all shortcuts
to MAKE them appear
check that these values are actually there if not write them into the registry

or this

Right-click the Desktop, choose Properties
Click the Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button
Choose Icon from the drop-down list
Set it's size to 32 (default size) and click OK, OK.

or this

Perform the registry change as described below to modify the arrow used on shortcuts

1. Start the registry editor (regedt32 or regedit.exe)
2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\EXPLORER\Shell Icons
3. Double click on 29 " shell32.dll,29 is a small arrow"
4. Change to the name of the icon, icon number, e.g. "shell32.dll,30" is a big arrow
5. Close OK
6. Close the registry editor

The above change would then take effect at next logon.

To AVOID the logoff you could modify an icon related entry, make the screen repaint by changing the background and set back, e.g. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon Size.

If the Shell Icons\29 value does not exist then you will need to create the Shell Icons branch and then create the 29 value of type String, told you that your hands would get dirty

A better way is to use TweakUI to perform the above arrow change.TweakUI>
Explorer>
Shortcut

there you can choose: Arrow, Light Arrow, None or Custom

Solve : Question about changing default "Save To" location...?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone here knew a way to change the default save to location on windows other than searching through and pointing it to the new location. I am doing a reinstall and my OS is going on its own hdd, and everything I install is going ONTO a DIFFERENT one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you are talking downloads which browser are you using?

In Mozilla Firefox CLICK Tools>Main and enter the desired path in the "Save Files To" dialog box.

If you are still using Internet Explorer change to Mozilla Firefox.

Good luckNo, not for my browser. (I do in fact use Firefox.) What I am referring to is when you go to install a new piece of software and it automatically chooses C:/Program Files/... blah blah blah and I am wanting it to be a different directory without having to go and SEARCH through for the right location. All you need to do is highlight the default and delete it...
Then as long as you start with C:\You can name it anything here and the directory will automatically be created and the install will land there.
I don't install anything in Program Files as it tends to get too large and cumbersome for my liking.
But this is the Windows default choice on account of Bill G> thinking everyone should do it his way...You can change the default location with a registry tweak.

Solve : 2 Issues, memory and speakers.?

Answer»

I've RECENTLY had to recover my system and now the speakers don't work. The problem seems to be that on my audio tab on the "Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices" there is no default playback device shown. Also when I go to All Programs/Music/Multichannel Sound Manager and try to do a speaker test, I get a message at the bottom that says "Cannot load wave file for testing". However on my "sound recording window, the REALTEK AC 97 shows up. I downloaded the latest driver, but still it does not show up. How can I fix this?

2nd issue is that after recovering the system my "C" DRIVE shows only 637mb free space I have a 185gb drive. I have removed all of my added software and the "Add/Remove Programs" that are LISTED only equal up to 1.4 gb of space. What is taking up the other free space that is not listed on the "Add/ Remove Programs"?

Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : Explorer.EXE Corrupt File...?

Answer»

Hello, Computer People.

I am using a Dell OptiPlex GX110 running Windows XP Service pack 2. I bought this computer from a guy who refurbishes old computers and stuff. Its been working fine, except lately I've been getting this message;

I ran chkdsk or whatever and this happened;

I answered 'y.' (And I have no clue why. *Is scared.*)

Did I do this right? Should I do something ELSE?

Thanks in advance for your responses! Does the message still COME up after you ran chkdsk?
And what happened before this started, did you make any changes?I didn't make any big changes, no.

And so far I haven't gotten the message again.

So I think its all good.

I hope. Quote

filename
FAT only. Specifies the file or set of files to check for fragmentation. Wildcard characters (* and ?) are allowed.

path
FAT only. Specifies the location of a file or set of files within the folder structure of the volume.

size
NTFS only. Changes the LOG file size to the specified number of kilobytes. Must be used with the /l switch.

volume
FAT only. Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name.

/c
NTFS only. Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.

/f
Fixes errors on the volume. The volume must be locked. If Chkdsk cannot lock the volume, it offers to check it the next time the computer starts.

/i
NTFS only. Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.

/l
NTFS only. Displays current size of the log file.

/r
Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /f ). If Chkdsk cannot lock the volume, it offers to check it the next time the computer starts.

/v
On FAT. Displays the full path and name of every file on the volume.
On NTFS. Displays CLEANUP messages, if any.

/x
NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if necessary. All opened handles to the volume are then invalid (implies /f ).

/?
Displays this list of Chkdsk switches.

These are the available switches for chkdsk.

So from the command promt you want to type chkdsk /r to fix any problems.
Note the space between chkdsk and the /Thanks, I'll try that.

Last night, it started coming up again.

I did chkdsk and it still came up.

But after I restarted, the blue chkdsk screen came up and so far I haven't seen it again.

Solve : I've lost my Control Panel?

Answer»

I run XP and wanted to go to the Control panel to make some changes and it's not anywhere to be found. I've RAN two programs for viruses and none were found. I went to tools and folder options and checked the box to show the control panel on my computer and it is still missing.I found a subject that is PRESENT in the control panel, remove programs, but when I click on it I get this message:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your systems admin.

The only thing I can think of where I might be responsible for this is that I ran a spyware program and removed several things listed. I don't remember anything on there being important but could have overlooked something.you can try USING tweakui i haven't ever used it but i think it may be able to restore control panel icons. Can you get into the admin account ? Try creating a new profile ! FIRST, thanks for the responses. I'm not sure about either suggestion but will look into it. I've looked into the recycle bin but it wasn't SENT there. I've got to finish mowing my yard right now but will be back in a couple of hours. Is this your machine ? ?

I don't log in, I just boot my machine up and tie on to the internet. To all concerned, I fixed the problem by doing a system restore. I went back about 4 days and everything returned to normal. Thanks to all that responded. Certain types of malware can attack not only Control Panel but Explorer and msconfig.
It may be a good idea to grab all the updates and run all your amti-malware apps. Thanks Patio, I've been running the tar out of them but have only updated one of them.1. run regedit
2. go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES
3. CREATE a new key NodispCPL and give a value 0
What will that do?

Solve : 40 gb hard drive reporting only 38 gb??

Answer»

Noticed something when I formatted my HARD drive and did a fresh install of Windows XP....when I was ASKED to format the drive during XP installation, the drive size was not 40 gb, but rather 38 gb? ANy idea as to what may be happening here?

Computer is Compaq EVO 500 CMT
1.8 ghz, 40 gb, 512 ram

Thanks in advance...maybe a "hidden" partition or???
Thats fine man. My Stick is writen 2gb but on the pc it REFLECTS 1.9gb same aplies to hard drive and many that i have seen. Dont panic its cool. (other space for junk files)The reason for the difference is that Hard DISK makers use the "decimal gigabyte" because it makes their drives sound bigger. File sizes, memory size, etc are usually measured using the "binary gigabyte" which is larger.

(1) decimal gigabyte...

1 Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes

(2) binary gigabyte

1 Gigabyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes

Seagate says my hard drive is 320 GB, but Windows sees it as having 298 GB.

It's normal.

Chart courtesy of Western Digitalu see the size in bios setup. it will show it 40 gb. if it isn't then it is a problem xpart, did you read the other answers before you posted?
No.

Solve : Trouble installing RoadRunner medic?

Answer»

I'm using Windows Xp. I tried changing my email address from [emailprotected] to [emailprotected] Everything went ok per the instructions, but failed when I tried running the final step; RoadRunnerMedic.exe. After spending 90 minutes on the PHONE w/TimeWarner, they said I to have someone remove a reference to a program that the install program attempts to remove. The error message is "Unable to revove PREVIOUS version of Adelphia SelfCare". If someone could provide some very simple guidance, I'd attempt it on my own.... Many thanks. If you are completely done with Adelphia first check Add/Remove programs and remove it from there...it's in Control Panel.
Remember to re-boot before trying to complete the current install.
If this does not work DLoad and run CCleaner which will remove stubborn program entries. Thanks for your response. I'm not familiar with DLoad or CCleaner..... A search on DLoad returned this scary comment: dload.exe is an executable file that starts a malicious process, launches certain parasite components or runs a destructive payload. Even if the dload.exe file does nothing suspicious, its presence indicates that your computer is infected with a particular threat.
The dload.exe file is installed and used by dialer Coulomb Dialer. CNET's review of CCleaner sounds good. I MAY give that a TRY. What am I missing?I downloaded CCleaner and ran it. This did not fix the problem. I had previously looked in Control Panel to remove the Adelphia program. It was not listed. I may have to have the Geek Squad look at this thing, unless there are additional things one might suggest. Thanks.Quote from: patio on August 28, 2007, 03:15:11 PM

Solve : Oh Geez!!! My pointer won't move!!!!?

Answer»

Trust me they are both very adept at following threads...i think what was suggested is that a $15.00 PS2 mouse while maybe overlooked would eliminate it being a hardware problem.

At least that's how i see it...ah, that might be true... but these days i've found no real difference in hardware compatibility for ps/2 and usb, so i would think that it would be more the computer software's fault

(maybe i'm biased, ever since windows 95 i've only had problems with software, rarely hardware)
(and i've had some of the worst software issues i've ever heard of or SEEN online [bad luck i guess])

as for help, denise, if you want to test using ps/2 and TRYING it as a SOLUTION, most LOGITECH packages (at least for the past few years) contain a small converter from usb to ps/2 that can be plugged onto the usb end of your mouse and keyboard set. the converter will look something like this:

once you have done this, you can plug the converter with your mouse and keyboard into the BACK of your computer, to the corresponding jack(s) as shown in the picture provided by contrex.

let us know if it works!

Solve : Unmountable Boot Volume?

Answer»

Hello,

This morning when i turned my COMPUTER on after a minute of loading a blue screen flashed up telling me that I had a unmountable boot volume, after SHOWING this for 5-10 seconds the computer restarted and came up with a list: whether to start NORMALLY, in safe mopde etc. I have tried all of these and everytime it comes up with the blue screen and restarts! when I searched on this site for a fix it said I would need the XP DISC, to check my hard drives, which i do not have with me, so I was wondering if there would be any way to check, or fix this without a disc, at the moment I am having to use internet cafes to check my emails etc. as I am on a study placement in Spain, and I am from the UK!

I will check back here when I can, ThanksI really dont think there is anything you can do without a xp disc short of replacing your hard drive....

But hold out a while longer somone might be able to help is anybody ELSE able to offer any help. or has had this problem before?Ill see if Patio or Street one can offer any help ! they are usally quite good !

Solve : cant view paid for media?

Answer»

Hi,

If this is the wrong forum to present this, please ADVISE and I will go to ANOTHER one.

Running Win XP, IE7, Shield Firewall, CounterSpy , Earthlink DSL

I signed up and paid to watch the Rugby World Cup via streams and DLs from Mediazone.com...I can log in effectively, but cant view the content . I get a 404 file not found error. when I tried to use their site a few MONTHS ago I had similar problems, but the error was related to license not recognized, could not acquire media rights. I WORKED with their online support many times without success. I deleted temp files, cookies, turned off firewalls, pop-up blockers, deleted and upgraded DRM folder NONE of which helped.

I was thinking it might be a hardware router firewall issue (2wire home portal 1000s) but tried my wife's PC downstairs and was able to use the site! her PC gets its signal thru the router and a wireless connection. So that indicated it was not a router firewall problem. Her PC has IE6, while mine has IE7...

Apparently there is something in my system that is blocking me from accessing the license for this content. I am VERY frustrated....any ideas appreciated!

thanks,

david

A 404 error is on their end...demand your money back and don't let them blame your equipment...Hi, thanks for the reply...

If it's on their end why can i view the content on another pc in my house with the same internet connection and same logins?

Solve : delete mail?

I cannot delete ANY messages I RECEIVE in Outlook Express. I have scanned for virus, etc. What is going on?
Bro Hat What's your OS? What version of Outlook Express? What happens when you try to delete a message? How are you trying to delete messages? Was it working OK before this STARTED happening?

Edit: How often do you empty the Deleted ITEMS folder? Does it have a lot of messages in it now?Using XP Professional,//////,I huighlight the message and click on delete. Delete icon blinks and message stays highlighted. This started happening when I was deleting the Deleted Items folder, when a message came up that said, "There has been a problem." That was all. I again went to delete the folder and it \said that the folder was empty. After that I could not delete any messages. My inbox now has about 220 messages in it.

Thank you for your interest. Hope the above helps.

You can't delete the Deleted Items folder. It's a STANDARD folder in OE and is not removable. You can delete messages in the folder, but you can't delete the folder. So, I'm a bit puzzled as to exactly what you were doing.

Can you open OE without error messages appearing? And, you see all the standard folders (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Drafts), right?

Can you view the contents of the Deleted Items folder? How many messages are in it? If you can't view it, what happens when you select, i.e. click on, that folder?

Sorry, bad writing. I deleted the items in the deleted items folder after which the problem began.

Correct. all the regular icons and folders are present. I can get to the deleted items folder and if currently shows no deleted items.Try this. Go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, and click on the button for Clean Up Now. On the next panel, click on Compact and let OE go through that process. Close OE and re-open it. Now, can you delete messages? Hi Soybean,
THANKS for the thought but it did not work. Thanks for helping. Any other ideas?

Solve : windows xp needs answers to boot off ms-dos boot disk?

Answer»

I ran Ad-Aware, disk cleanup, defrag, and then let scandisk or checkdisk run at night while I SLEPT. It was set to autofix any problems. In the morning the internet wouln't work, so I REBOOTED. Then Windows XP would not come on. I MADE a boot disk from my other computer (both registered copies of windows) and used it to boot my first computer. Also, tried to boot with windows xp installation disk. All choices I GET by hitting f5 or by just letting either of the two disks run their course, is the command prompt with something like:
C:\windows\
What do I put in here to get windows to load?
Thanks in advance for any response and hopefully help. What type of bootdisk did you create ? ?
XP startup disks require 6 floppies...
You can't just use any flavor of Windows to get XP to boot normally.

p.s. You could try typing win at that prompt and hitting Enter...Ensure you have the correct boot disks as patio says. Download from

Solve : Windows ME hangs during intallation?

Answer»

I'm doing a clean install of Windows Me and it hangs every time, right after the hardware detection phase. When you except the EULA and enter the product key. I've tried to enter SAFE mode and I GET to the desktop, but as soon as I do it freezes there too. I've tried new RAM, new power supply, disconnecting the cd drives and floppy drives, removing all PCI cards. Antivirus support is disabled in the BIOS, I know it can cause problems if it's enabled. What else can I do??Check the installation CD has no greasy thumprints or bad scratches on. This can stop an installation.Here's what I would try;

Boot from a Win98/ME boot floppy

At the prompt TYPE fdisk

Using the options, FIRST delete any Extended Partitions and Logical Drives and then SECOND delete the PRIMARY Partition

Recreate the Primary Partition and set it active, recreate ant Extended Partitions/Logical Drives Required

Reboot and format by TYPING Format C: Format D: ect

Reinstall Windows.Nice buscrew ! Ok I'm trying your suggestion. Right now I'm in the middle of formatting c: But I get a lot of "trying to recover allocation unit". Is that normal or is there something wrong with the hard drive?Ok now I'm trying to enter the product key, and it's telling me the key on the sticker on the side of the computer is invalid!!

Anyone know how I could get this key to work?I suspect the key on the box is related to a recovery partition or recovery CD. Are you trying to install from a full edition of ME or an upgrade edition?

Solve : Computer Crash?

Answer»

Hopefully someone can help me with this. Recently after clearing up my computer I came across an odd situation that caused it to crash. Anytime I ran Tibia.exe (a game client) my computer CPU usage would hit 100% (normally on my computer thats fine) then the fan would get faster and louder and after about 20-25 seconds the computer CRASHES as if it has over heated (even though the heat is fine) at first I thought it was the sensor so I cleaned it out with compressed air, no difference. I then checked my drivers and found my VGA Controller card driver was uninstall so I reinstalled it. Once again no difference. This happens any time I OPEN tibia but also when im Archiving (adding to .rar) files or running to many processes and this has never happened before. I could reformat the computer but I would prefer to leave that to a last resort

So if you have any ideas or suggestions of what I can do please post them here.what do you MEAN "the heat is fine"?
The computer is not warmer than usual I have felt it after it crashes for heat reasons and it is no where near that heatHuman hand is very poor and inaccurate post-crash heat sensor! You should use temperature monitoring software such as Speedfan. You did not mention your CPU or motherboard make or model.

Your computer IS overheating.

If you have had many crashes due to overheating your CPU may be damaged and therefore fail at lower temperature than when it was new.

I am really unsure as to what the hardware specs are and I would rather not open it up since it is a lap top. It seems odd that the computer would only over heat after 20-25 seconds of cpu being at 100% usage and tthe fan getting louderIf you don't want to open it up because it is a laptop, (which I entirely understand and agree with), your next step, realistically, is going to be to call some repair shops.

It would not be odd if the cooling was compromised to such an EXTENT that the CPU is on the edge all the time and 20-25 seconds of 100% usage takes it way over the edge. You need to be running some temperature monitoring software, then you have some figures to work with. We don't know your idle temperature or how the temp spikes up with 100% cpu usage. RAM can overheat very easily also. Your laptop might be full of dust and fluff.

This is all irrelevant, since you'll be calling the repair shop. Believe me.

I know quite a few people who have found out the downside of laptops like you have.

I had cleared out the pc just the other day with a can of "Dust off" I run fan speed and it shows:

  • HD0 - 34C
  • Temp1 - 49C
  • Core - 66C

When I hit 100% core speed instantly shoots up to 88C-92C this doesnt make MUCH sense its not possible for a computer to hit that heat so fast is it?Quote from: Taftor on September 22, 2007, 11:10:15 AM
When I hit 100% core speed instantly shoots up to 88C-92C this doesnt make much sense its not possible for a computer to hit that heat so fast is it?

[rolls eyes!]

Why doesn't it make much sense? Of course it's possible! Very possible! The thermal contact between the CPU and the heatsink may be damaged - the heatsink could have shifted if the laptop was dropped or jarred, or the thermal compound could be burned due to previous overheating. A hundred and one possible reasons. The temp could shoot up to 100C in 5 to 10 seconds. Modern CPUs have built in temperature protection that kicks in at around 100C. I expect that may be kicking in, but you usually get a message.

Anyway, quit arguing with fate. You're going to have to find the cost of a repair and compare it to the present value of the laptop.

You don't say what CPU you have, but whatever, 66 C is a high reading. If that's during idling or routine load, you sure have heat problems, my friend!

I have an external modem or a modem connected to my computer.

More details are needed. What type of modem. How does it connect to your computer ? USB cable? What version of windows are you USING?

Has you used this computer to connect to the internet before and it has stopped working or is it a new connection you are making?

Please remember that we cannot see your computer, you have to give us as MUCH detail as possible. So this is dial up your using ?

What OS are you on ? xp 98 ?

Who is your ISP?Windows XP
56K Dial-Up Modem
America Online 9.0

I have connected to the internet before but it's not working now.
It's connected with a phone cable.Re-install the modem drivers...
Afterwards check in Device Manager to make sure it is there.
Then run the modem setup to enter the phone # ETC.

Solve : internet trouble?

Answer»

I have a HP computer using Windows xp . A week ago there was a lighting strike close to my home . Since then I cannot get on to the internet . When I go into my control panel it states that I have lost my local connection . I then had my modem REPLACED thru my CABLE company . They stated that I still have a problem with my local connection and suggested that I replace my ethernet port . I had this done , but still cannot connect to the internet . I need help !Mad I don't think it has anything to do with lighting strike....

Try reinstalling you ROUTER if you have not already...

Disconnect every thing, turn router of, and then turn BACK on hit repair in network properties ! Is it a modem or router, if its a router, can you connect locally to it across the LAN, if its a modem, is the phone line its self ok? is the correct number for dialing out in use/ is it broadband? I'm really new at this . Sorry for the confusion . I am not wireless , so I do not have a router. Also, my internet connection is broadband .u don't have to be wireless to have a router ?

Its like a thing your computer connects to

you must install your router. in network placesSorry about that . I have a modem .I am really sorry will get sorted just to clarify you have dial up then 56K How was the Ethernet port replaced ? ?
Did a shop do this or did you do it yourself ? ?
Did you RECIEVE a driver CD for the new Ethernet device ? ?

If so try re-installing the drivers.

Solve : Cursor Moves Oddly?

Answer»

Alright - I'm running Windows XP on a Toshiba Latitude C600/C500 (that's what it says on the bottom). I also have Avast! as virus protection. I don't have a mouse, I just USE the TOUCHPAD. However, just today the CURSOR STARTED behaving... oddly. Usually it works normally, but every once in awhile it will decide to scroll diagnally across the screen, usually down & to the left. It will also do this whenever I right-click. It will STAY down in the corner for around 30 seconds, and then it will work normally again. My hands and the touchpad are both clean. Any help?Maybe internal damage to the touch pad itself ? I hate touch pads myself. I'd go get a mouse Do you have a mouse from another computer that you could test on there? I would recommend purchasing a mouse. You can get a good one for pretty cheap. You could also try re-installing the Touchpad drivers...they will be on the Toshiba driver CD that came with the machine.
I'm assuming that CD is lost cause everyone says that so travel to Toshiba's site and DLoad and install the drivers.

Solve : Strange square blocks during startup screen (XP)?

Answer»

Hey Guys,
I have a problem that I just have no idea how to solve! When windows is booting up, during the screen where theres the windows sign and the blue dots are moving from left to right, the screen is covered in small blue squares from top to bottom, evenly spaced out and slightly see-through.

After talking to some people about it I decided to wipe my pc and install a fresh version of windows... but its still there! It also started appearing on the windows desktop but after installing new GRAPHICS drivers I got rid of the squares on the desktop but they're still there during startup and theres also a small rectangle above and below my CURSOR which follows it around constantly flickering.

Just wondering if anyone COULD possibly help me out cuz I'm out of ideas!

I have a NVIDIA nForece 2 motherboard, Radeon 9700Pro, 1 gig of memory and I'm on Sp2. Thats all i can think that you might need to know.

Cheers guys,
WillCan you post a screenshot of these mystery blocks please?

Many thanks

Tony
Rich, how does he take a screenshot of the Windows loading screen? I'd like to know myself, it would be very useful. If it happens at bootup during the Windows load process, it points to video hardware, I think. I'd check that the video card is properly seated in its slot, and that any power connectors are correctly and firmly connected. Flickering blocks round the mouse cursor are very suggestive of a display card problem. Has it been allowed to overheat? Is the FAN choked with dust? Is this a new build or is it a computer you have used for a while without problems?

A quick Google on "Radeon 9700 squares" told me

Quote

the most common answer being the card is overheating

Check video card heatsink for looseness... Consider aftermarket heatsink + fan... Just a few ideas.

Well i use my digtal camera to take pictures of errors when my computer boots ........ or my mobile ..... ive been hunting around for a way to screenshot UPON boot , and it appears there isnt a way as far as ive searched ....

Solve : Windows will only work in safe mode after bad shutdown?

Answer»

I am hoping someone here can help me with this...

A couple of days ago, I attempted to install an expansion pack for Sims2. It advised me to back up my game files, so I tried to, but I tried to put them in a zip file on a cd, came back an HOUR later and it was still copying. I assumed it must be stuck, cancelled out of it, and just tucked the zip file away on the hard drive instead. I then tried to proceed with the installation, and opened a web browser so I could read email while waiting. After a couple of minutes nothing was happening, and I shut off the computer.

Now, when Windows starts, I will get the XP logo followed by a blank screen. The hard drive stops shortly after the blank screen appears. I turn the power off, turn it back on, then I will get the list of options for starting the computer. The only options that work are the safe mode options. I get nothing from starting normally or using the last good configuration. Using safe mode, I have attempted to system restore to an earlier point, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I tried the Microsoft support page but it was useless. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.Boot into safemode....go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

Have your Windows XP CD handy as it will ask for it.Hmm I tried that but WHATEVER HAPPENED ran in a little window very fast and then shut. It never asked me for a disk... Have you tried installing windows ? Quote from: Spero-T on September 12, 2007, 04:51:34 AM

Have you tried installing windows ?

This is not advice...this is grasping at straws.

fluffysue the next thing i would try on that machine would be to again boot into safemode and check the disk for errors...
Start/Run chkdsk /r and hit Enter...let it run to completion. And yet again Patio.........

The computer starts in safe mode so yet again this is a software issue ..... So reinstalling windows... would this not help

I am JUST tyring to help......Quote from: Spero-T on September 12, 2007, 07:08:51 AM

I'm not going to reply to this twice...could it be corrupted files?I'll let you guys fight it out, but thanks for the ideas.
I tried running scandisk, it REALLY did seem like a harmless enough thing to do, and now it doesn't work even in safe mode, just hangs on a DOS-like screen while loading. I am going to have to take it somewhere to get fixed since I can't even access ANYTHING, 5 years worth of stuff apparently gone (but I know it's there!) For all others reading this post it is an advert for backing up a copy of your work.

Back up to CD, DVD, Another computer but backup regularly then you will not lose 5 years of work when your computer breaks down. And they all will eventually! Nothing lasts forever. Before you take it to a shop and they just re-install XP for you and wipe your data there is another option...
If you know someone who has a working XP system and they have some basic computer skills you can have them remove your drive and hook it up in a working machine as a slave drive...
Provided the drive itself has not failed you should not only be able to see all your data but copy/burn it to a CD/DVD...
You won't have this option after you give it to a shop as they usually just wipe the hard drive and restore the machine back to Day One status...

It's definitely worth a try at least.

And if you do successfully retrieve your data you can just wipe the drive yourself and re-install XP and the drivers and programs you need without paying someone to do it...

Post back on what you decide to do and we can assist further...patio is right about what he is saying and I do believe you have a windows issue going on here.... I would have told you to do a repair install but, sometimes even a repair ... you could lose your data... at least you'll have time to back it up Just incase!

Solve : shutdown on installation of windows?

Answer»

I just put together a new computer and I am trying to install windows xp home(It was free through school). After about 15 minutes into the setup the computer just shuts down, right in the middle of the setup. no error message no warning at all. I don't know what is HAPPENING and I know that Raidmax isn't the best PS but I need help I am at a loss. Thanks!

intel core 2 duo E6700
asus p5w dh deluxe
sapphire x1950pro 512MB ddr3
2 GB g.skill ddr2-800
Seagate 320 GB SATA HD
Raidmax 500W PS with Raidmax case
I noticed you have som mismatched RAM...try PULLING the 512 stick out and see if it installs...
Also check the CD for smudges/scratches...clean it with a lint free cloth.
If neither of these work i would SWAP out the PSU and try that.that's the memory on my video card.
the 2 GB g.skill is my RAMGotcha...sorry my bad.
Reading too fast again.
Try the other suggestions and let us know. You might try removing any unnecessary devices as well. Many setup issues are due to incompatible hardware. Sometimes you can install the hardware after the installation with better luck. You might have a modem or sound card that is preventing windows setup from completing. Try removing them until after windows gets installed. Check that your graphics card has a power connector if required. Check that all your fans are functional as well, the system may be overheating. all my fans are going. all my peripherals are on my mobo (i.e. soundcard, modems, wireless.)
I checked after it turned off and it was barely hot.
I checked to see if my CPU heatsink was seated properly on the chip.
I just ordered a seagate 580W PSU and we'll see how that goes. if it doesn't fix the problem then I'll be back.

I suspect it is a PSU problem. after it shuts down I can't immediately reboot the system, even if I manually shut it down. Then I flip the power switch off then on and I can reboot.

I let it sit idle in the setup menu and it still shut off. that's why i don't think it's a heat issue.

Solve : Line going down computer screen and weird sound from speakers?

Answer»

The line just starting going down my screen ( top to bottom) 2 days ago. It has happened before a few months ago but went away after a few days. I tried switching MONITORS last night but the line was still there, so it's not the monitor. I also have this weird annoying buzz coming from my speakers since this has started. I'm starting to freak out because I have INTERNET classes to do and REALLY need my computer.

Can anyone help me out here??

PLEASE! The first thing i would check is that the speaker and monitor connections have not come loose.

Then i would turn off the speakers to see if they have become faulty and are now causing interference with the monitor and then the other way round - Monitor off speakers left on.

Try this and let us know the results.

i just tried that both ways and the line is still there and the buzzing is still there when the monitor is off I forgot to say switch the speakers/monitor off at the wall sockets not just at the on/off button. If one of them is faulty it could still cause interfence if only off at the front buttons.

If this doesn't help then next check the power leads to everything including the computer are in firmly and all the sockets are in the wall points fimly aswell. A partially unplugged power cable can often cause interference. Move any other electrical euipment away from the area aswell - especially mobile phones and see if this is causing the problem.

The next step is then to look to see if it is either your graphic card or your sound card causing the problem but before someone takes you there let's eliminate the simpler fixes above. Check and let us know.

I just did that all! and the line's still there.... now i'm getting scared. this might be a pricey fix OK - Next step.

You need a friend whose computer you can connect you speakers and monitor to. This will see if your problem is with the monitor and speakers if they play up on their computer or if the problem lies with you computer..Quote from: makers on August 29, 2007, 03:48:46 PM

I doubt its your speakers causing the problem there probably just faulty. As for the Monitor I think you call this dead pixels, try rubbing the damaged area very gently to see if it goes away, the same thing happened to me a few months ago and I ended up dropping my screen on the ground but it FIXED the problem I am not saying you should do this but just letting you know, and I doubt it will deteriorate any further!!If I were you, I would disregard the above post...

I agree with mektek that this sounds like an interference issue. Are you near any sort of heater, water heater, broiler, RADIATOR, or anything like that? Have you tried moving your computer to a completely different part of the room with a different outlet?

You might also want to try physically moving the speakers away from your computer desk area. Although a bit of a longshot, it's possible that they're not properly shielded. Are these speakers designed specifically for a computer?

Solve : Help with dual hard disk virtual memory?

Answer»

I recently purchased a 250 GB external hard drive for my laptop. After this PURCHASE, I decided to change virtual memory settings to best accomodate dual hard drives. I have 512 mb RAM and I set the minimum virtual memory to evenly distribute to 752 (376 per drive). I have an IBM think pad T42 laptop. However after configuring this the total paging memory was stated to be 376 mb. Regardless of what drive I use the total paging memory is only stated as the virtual memory USED for the drive with the highest virtual memory set to it. Is there a reason for this, is only one of my drives being used as virtual memory?

any HELP is much appreciated. I dont know if this helps any but have a look ...

Solve : "TIP OF THE DAY"Fixing a broken windows update?

Answer»

Windows UPDATE is actually a component of internet explorer, so damaged IE installation may keep windows update from working. Other causes for windows update's failing to work are covered in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 193385.Look up the step-by-step instructions for fixing a sick window update at http://support.microsoft.com

if you can't connect to this website because your browser's broken, open the Add/REMOVE programs icon in control panel, select internet explorer from the list of programs, and click add /remove. you can uninstall or repair IE with this OPTION.

I don't believe that's correct, not for Windows XP SP2. It has no repair option for IE that can be launched via Add or Remove Programs. try installing the latest version of internet explorer and it should update and install the missing COMPONENTS.not true soybean and remember what I said, "Windows update is actually a component of internet explorer"!

Yes, the option to "remove" Internet Explorer is under Add/Remove Windows Components. "Removing" it does not really remove the program files for IE from the system; it just removes it from the Programs menu and any shortcut icons to it, making it appear as though it has been "uninstalled".

Nevertheless, I believe removing IE and then adding it back may, in some cases, resolve problems. I suspect this is due to resetting of settings to default rather than any actual repair PROCEDURE.

Windows 98SE, and maybe other versions of Windows, truly had a Repair procedure for IE, which was accessed via Add/Remove Programs. You select IE for removal, went the next screen, and had options to unistall (which really meant going back the previous version of IE) or repair. Win XP does not have that.OK soybean, you need to do some reading... I have a good books for you.
PC Help Desk Leo Laporte's and I do believe the MCSE Windows XP Pro 70-270

can't remember the page I read it on the MCSE but, PC Help Desk Leo Laporte's chapter 2 PG 133.

I forgot about that info from all the books I read and believe me, I have alot or had. I just so happen to read that section that night and said to myself... WOW, I forgot!

Note: I wouldn't give at info if it wasn't fact... do you think I just guess about computers because I know about computers

There are people out there that because they know about computers they think there right about everthing and I know for a fact I don't know everthing. This is why I research and Learn... not only from you guys but, also from books.... They are the best teachers.

yes I do believe your right ...about it doesn't have a repair option for SP2 but windows update is a component of internet explorer so that means it will repair your windows update anyway! as soon as I find the page for the MCSE ... I'll let you know... this doesn't mean I disagree with you "remember that"

nice talking to you and hope to hear from you again

Solve : Install win xp & win xp 64-bit on same partition?

Answer»

It is possible to install winxp 32-bit & windows xp 64-bit operating systems on SAME PARTITION OF THE DRIVE.
It means on C: drive both os on there, not one os on D: drive.

If it is possible than pls reply me.
I search on it on google, but I can't find any solution.

Thanks in advance.

Nency.This should answer your question
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1910&page=2
In the there is only said that it is possible , but how it possible it can't say.
If you realise me the disadvantages , then I know that.
And I really want to install both os on same partition.
Anyway thanks Viper. If you know the answer on that side than pls RELPY me. Once again thanks. I would install whichever one you want to default boot first. Then when you install the second specify in setup to use the existing partition but a different directory such as Win64. Once installed you can use a program such as X-Setup Pro (http://www.x-setup.net/downloads/ to change the default location of the program files directory. Hope this helps. Just correct me.

First I install win xp 32-bit os.
Now I install win xp 64-bit os. In setup I give the path: C:\win 64 & install.
Then both the os there or OVERWRITE!!!!

The other thing what that link. Can you explain it?

Thanks.

Nency. If you have data, make certain to back it up or you will lose it, maybe not today but eventually.
The path C:\win 64 would need to be shortened to C:\win64
The fact that you are installing into a different directory will let setup know you are setting up a dual boot operating system. It should not overwrite it (but again, be safe, backup data)
The program link is for a useful tweaking program for windows. One of the handy features I have used it for is changing the location of the default directories including your program files location. You can change the default program files directory so that the both windows TRY to share the directory.
Again I have not done this... It is how I would go about doing it o.k. I will check it.

One other question is that as in dual boot we can select the os,how can we do in this manner.
Have any idea?Installing as said should bring up a menu when you boot asking which operating system you would like to load. You can configure the boot settings by running msconfig and looking under boot options or manually editing the boot.ini file in the root directory. As I search on this topic on google. I found that we want to edit boot.ini file.
Can any one know whwat we want to change in that file.I believe that it should automatically setup the boot menu but if you would like to know more about editing the boot file you can check out this article http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/asm/mbr/bootini.htm#Ex

Otherwise I believe your boot.ini file should be as FOLLOWS

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WIN64="Microsoft Windows XP 64 Bit" /fastdetect Is there a good reason you want two installs of Windows on the same partition ? ?
While it can in fact be done i predict problems with this setup...

Solve : Screen flashes could this be a virus??

Answer»

I am pritty sure that means its a software issue....i would agree, if it's not too annoying to do while the screen is going crazy, try updates on VIDEO drivers

another thing to try might be to RESET your resolution to something lower or higher depending on where you're starting from.

Um, what video card are you running? I don't think I saw it mentioned at all, and it would be helpful for us if you could post itLike I said, this isn't a completely failsafe method. There are other possible factors that could be accountable here. However, it does make me think this is either a software issue or something related to your graphics card (unless you only have onboard graphics). In any case, I would update your graphics card drivers. And if you have a graphics card that isn't onboard, you should make sure it's properly seated or, like patio suggests, try it in a different computer.

Keep in MIND that the PSU is still a viable possibility, so don't rule it out yet. I'm just trying to take a different APPROACH on the situation.

What is the program you are trying to remove?

If it is not fully installed with an uninstaller you could try re-installing it fully then unistalling it.

The programme I am having bother with is Magix photos on cd and dvd deluxe 6.I t has magix photo clinic ,magix photo manager2007 and magix music manager 2006 all on the disc.when i try to run the music manager it starts to run then stops.I can remove all the programmes with add/remove on control panel but when I try to uninstall music manager 2006 ,the message "invalid install log file" appears. tried installing programmes again, but to no avail
I am running windows xp service pack 2.I LOADED this disc on my laptop with no problems.
would be grateful for some help Music Manager did not fully install which is why it didn't work properly.

You need to reinstall it fully so that it can fully uninstall. There is a part of the program that lets it uninstall properly that obviously didn't get put on the first time.

You need to reinstall this program and it should install with all the parts, including the part that will let you uninstall it properly this time.

I know it seems slightly odd to reinstall it to be able to uninstall it but this method does work most times.

Try this first and let us know. If not then we'll look at the alternative ways to get rid of it for you.Hello Mektek,
Done as you SUGGESTED,reinstalled programme, when i ran disc system told me music manager was already installed, would i like to reinstall?Reinstalled programme ,system said it was successfully installed. double clicked the icon, the front page started to appear skins and lists loading the it disappeared.went to control panel, selected music manager 2006 ,clicked add/remove and up pops a window with(invalid install log file) inside.

Alan <>< The program on the disk has an error it is not installing properly so won't uninstall properly

The following is a free uninstaller that should allow you to get rid of "broken" programs

http://www.download.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10727911.html?tag=lst-0-5Hello mektek,
Thanks for your and everybodies help in trying to resolve this problem,I have installed and ran that revo -uninstaller,thought I had the problem cracked but half way through the uninstall PROCESS,that blasted message appeared again,(invalid install log file) then the uninstall froze.
Kind regards Marguer1 I'm not quitting on this yet.

It doesn't seem to install and therefore uninstall from the disk so we could try installing it from the link below and then uninstalling it again.

http://www.download.com/MAGIX-Music-Manager-2006/3000-2141_4-10559350.htmlAlso it couldn't hurt to email Magix and tell them the problems you are having with the software. There is alink on the above download page. They may have a solution for the removal af their software.

Hello I need help I Am trying to learn about VBS and BAT lanquage does anyone know anything cool to do with these to extension types?

Depends on what you consider cool - what would you want to do using scripting?Idk just post some things that SEEM cool to do and tell meNah - I'll pass on that - what's cool to you is probably humdrum to me and vice versa. PERHAPS someone else will pick up your post.

Good luck

Solve : security issue??

Answer»

I have a compaq computer with windows xp home edition.
I have had problems with my ex in that he originally set up my computer and managed to set up wireless devices on my network. I have deleted all wireless devices and any other devices I don't recognise, and changed the admin access area password so that seems to have solved that problem-however, I am still concerned about what he could have done-I am suspicious of everything now.

When I shut down, my computer makes the 'shutting down' noise twice-could it be that he has access still, though hidden? (He knows everything about my computer, as he set everything up and is an I.T technician)

How can I tell if he used a 'key-logging' programme?

Could you be just a little more specific as to what the problem is? Thanks.Personally, gonzalez, I think you are being more than a little paranoid, but then I don't know your ex. If you are so concerned, why don't you back up all your important data and completely reinstall Windows? If he really is such a scarily controlling person, and you feel that he might spy on you after he has gone, that is the first thing that you should do. Think of it as part of "moving on". Think of it as taking control of your own stuff. I mean, I am sure you got rid of lots of little things to do with him from around the house, think of it like that.

I would certainly do this.

The excuse "But I don't know anything about computers" won't do. The price of peace of mind and freedom is to learn some of that geek stuff. It isn't hard, and you will be one step further along the road towards being free, one step further away from letting people like him run your life. Anyway that's just my 2 cents worth.

Only found out about his very serious, very scary and EXTREMELY violent criminal background when we split up, and I really do know that he is capable of tracking my every move if he can. Trust me when I saw I am trying to move on!

Ok, so tell me how to back up/reinstall windows as I really don't know how to do these things-that's how we learn isn't it? As he was an IT technician and a control freak, I never found out how to do these things as he would always do them.

ThanksWe also learn by doing things and by finding out for ourselves. Google is a really brilliant search engine.
Rasilun-

Basically, I just need to know if there is anyway he can still be 'spying' on me, EVEN though I have disconnected all wireless devices-whether he may have put programmes in my computer before we split that would ALLOW him to do this, and also whether he has already 'spied' on me with a key-logging programme.

If there is a simple explanation as to why, when I log off, the 'logging off' noise sounds once then again a few seconds later, please GIVE me the explanation and I will be happy.

I know he has already 'spied' on me in a way as had set up my next door neighbours (worryingly still friendly with them) with a wireless connection to my internet, along with several other wireless devices that were nothing to do with me, and when I tried to delete them, a little later they would re-appear. I only got this changed when I changed the password to the admin access area (which bt don't like doing apparently?!!).

Any ways of me checking my comp is safe and sound from him would be great.Contrex-

Agreed, we do learn by doing (as a teacher I know this is obviously the best way to learn)-I have done nothing but scour all the help pages and websites since changing the wireless settings-I have learnt a LOT, but some questions remain unanswered (and, after all, I am uneducated in computers, not stupid in general)-I don't know how to ask a search engine about the 'logging off' noise-I have looked at 'shutting down' etc. but no answers-if you know a simple explanation for it, please tell me and I will be more than happy.

I get the feeling you feel that I am wasting your time-I thought this forum was to ask questions that others might know the answers to? I don't feel that you were wasting my time, I feel that this forum is to point people in the right direction, not to give long, tedious to type step-by-step instructions how to do something which has been covered many times before on websites and in books. We are not paid to do this. Pro computer help is there for people who need it.

Sounds like you're hearing a sound when you log off, and another sound when the PC shuts down. (Logging off and shutting down are not the same thing) That's what I hear on mine.

Solve : Help ASAP please. my cpu is flashing a yellow light not a green one?

Answer»

Can someone please tell me why the green light on the front of the cpu is yellow and not green? im running windows xp. i cant turn it on or even use the comptuer. i need an answer asap, i am using that computer for schoolTypically this means a power supply problem, Is this a dell ?Highly likely that a rail has blown in the power supply unit, and now it cannot provide enough watts / AMPS to start then run the computer. unfortunately PSU's often take other components with them when they go, but check out if you can get a replcement, ACTUALLY measure the PSU box dimensions, then LOOK at the INFORMATION stuck on it, and then try for a replacement do not jump and get one as cheap as possible or you will just get the same problem if not worse again very soon.

named brands Zalman, Tagan, Hiper, Enermax, Cooler master, Seasonic, Akasa, Blue Storm, Jeantech I'm not aware of any CPU's with lights on them...
Do you mean the monitor ? ?
If so double check all your connections with the machine and monitor un-plugged from all power sources.
Then plug everything back in and try it again.I THINK he means the tower lot of people in my work also call it the cpu ?

Yes it can be changed in safemode...
I thought he SAID he couldn't get in in safemode either
i was answering your question.
Funny, I never really thought about doing it in safemode before...Have you changed any programs or command files recently? Thanks for all the replies. I haven't been over to his house in a while but I am going today to look over the computer again. I now have some supplies i.e. memory I know is good and a hard DRIVE. I'm gonna check the BSOD and hit pause when it flashes so I can read the error, I just hope I can get it in time. Another thing that my friend failed to mention was that it was working properly during a thunderstorm than the power flash and when his computer reset the problem started. Does this help what the problem COULD be?....BTW I can't get into Windows at all. Normal mode nor SAFE mode. It is a Dell and the BIOS command is F2, and the manually boot command is F12.This is probably a RAM memory trouble, you have to try with 2 ways: 1) Try with another RAM memory to start your pc, 2) Verify the memory USING a DOS software to check it.

Also, you could reset the BIOS using the jumper settings established on the PC Motherboard Manual to try if the BIOS is fail, or update the PC BIOS.

At last, You must check the temperature generated on the devices, if it's warm it means that the Hardware needs to add more fan coolers, or deactivate Overclocking. The overheat cause this fail too.

Best WishesIf he had a power strike remove the modem if there is one in there and try a cold boot.
I.E. Leave the power off for a few minutes after removing the modem and then power up...

Solve : Need Sound Help PLZZZ?

Answer»

Just BOUGHT a rebuilt DELL desktop, running win 2000 and the sound is distorted. The USB AUDIO DEVICE shows error STATUS . How do I correct this? Thanks. Travel to Dell's site and enter the service tag # from the back of the machine. Then DLoad and re-install the MBoard drivers for that machine if it is onboard sound,,,And if it's not onboard sound do the same thing only go the sound cards manufacturers WEBSITE. Download the drivers and see if that fixes it. If not and it is still all distorted then it's the sound card itself and you will have to replace it.

Solve : Freezing?

Answer»

Ok so i have had this computer for about 3 years and i have always had problems with it. This time, every time i click on "my computer" or anything that has to do with files located in "my computer" the screen will freeze for about a minute and then every program will close. I cant use almost any program i have because they all have folder in there. For example, i cant even get limewire to work because when it gathers the library, it FREEZES and closes. Please, any suggestions?also, i forgot to add... i cant type address's in in the address bar on explorer. If i do it freezes. I have to use the DROP down menu to go to google.More info on the machine, flavor of Windows and what happened prior to this and someone will be along shortly...You've had problems with this computer for the entire three years? Has it ever been formatted?

List as many SPECS as you can.ok WELL i suck at computers but ill give this a try... its a Windows Xp professional and yea iv basically have had mad problems with it. THe first thing that happend was that i got some kind of executive file virus and somehow my power supply thing(the thing with the fan) broke and i had to get a new one. Then i got another virus and had to get a compleatly new hardrive. There were many other TIMES i had to re-write my harddrive before that. Now... as for this prob... iv run many virus checks, bug checks, and used Ccleaner but still nothing. I dont think i did anything to it before this happend... not sure tho. The last thing i downloaded was Audacity and the prob started maybe like a day or two after that.u sholud format it.
could be from the limewire...i have the same problem b4..I don't know if it's from LimeWire, but that is the last program I would ever put on my machine. Stick to torrents if you need "stuff". If I were you, I would format... Sucks, but that's computers. Do you have a Microsoft XP CD ? ?
If so go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have the CD handy as it will ask for it.
