Hey EVERYBODY! I seem to be having a minor problem with my open file dialog. When I go to open a file with programs such as Winamp and IE, the files and folders are completely out of order. They were all in alphabetical order, but recently they seem to be in the date modified order.

On the other hand, when I browse through my files using the My Computer APPROACH, EVERYTHING is just fine. So, I'm trying to figure out how to have the Open File dialog place my files in alphabetical order by default, since it is annoying to have to sort everytime I go into a new folder.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition, I don't have any viruses, spyware or anything like that. I've tried looking through all of the folder OPTIONS I can find, but I can't find anything related to my problem. I'm still trying to figure it out, and any suggestions/advice would be great. Click on the C: Drive in the left pane.

Click on the View Menu, then choose List.

Right click in the empty whitespace area in the right pane where the
files get listed.

Choose Arrange Icons By.

Pick "Name".

Verify files are sorted alphabetically. If not, repeat.

Press and hold the control KEY, then click on the "X" to close Explorer.

Then you can reopen explorer and set whatever default view you want in
explorer.

The key here, is that the file open dialog box, and all other similar
controls, use the sort method saved when in "List" view. Nowhere else
have I seen this. If you do it using "Details" view, it won't fix the

I'm on a Windows XP Home Toshiba Laptop, SP2 and when I OPEN a certain file folder on my desktop I keep GETTING a windows exporer error, as seen in the pic I included.....
I have run the usual spyware/trojan programs and find NOTHING, and there really isnt anything unusual in the folder, I have also scanned the folder itself and it finds nothing, ANYBODY have any ideas what may be causing this?

everytime I try to install the modem they sent me my explorer encounters and unknown error and must close the only way to stop it that I can find is to restore my PC to before the install. So now I'm paying for dsl and still using my dial up. I am connecting with a usb cable because my PC doesn't have a ethernet port. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I often cut and paste SENTENCES and paragraphs to COMPOSE new EMAILS. They usually have different fonts and sizes. Although I "Select All" and choose a new font and style, some text refuses to change.

every time i run de-frag on my system, it shuts down after around 10 minutes. this also happens when i am trying to burn a dvd with nero. this is only a recent problem but it is doing my HEAD in.

i also seem to be missing a load of disk space as well. i am down to 25 gb from 160 gb but there is now virtually nothing left on my system.

Here are the CH instructions for W2k install.

Good luckWhen the machine is first starting at the bottom of the first screen it will tell you what key to enter Setup...usually F2 F10 or Delete.
Once in Setup look for boot priority and set the CDRom as the first device then floppy then HDD.
Press F10 to save changes and EXIT and have the Win2K CD in...
It will now boot to the CDRom first and the Win2K setup should start.
Pay attention to the prompts and you should be good to go.

Hi, I'm using Microsoft Windows XP home edition and I've been having trouble downloading any programs online for about 9 months.
For example when I want to get on youtube, I have to download the adobe flashplayer but it won't allow me to do that. The website says
that the Internet Explorer Security Warning should pop up but it never does. It'll also give me a blank rectangular box with a red x in the
top left hand corner but no image is visible. Also when I TRY to download anything else the download window pops up but it stays on
0% downloading and does not move beyond that, it also says "Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either

Windows ME was not put out on floppy disks.
The last Windows on floppy disks was Windows
98 FE. It was 37 disks.

If you bought 98FE ,or the upgrade for windows, Microsoft
had a page in the manual where you could SEND them

would send you a floppy disk set. I know I have one.

i recently did a restore on windows xp and now all the games when you open them up are small, i tried messing with the DPI but no luck Are the games the only programs that open very small? Can you maximize them or resize them by dragging on their borders. 'Hey, I've come across a major problem with our home computer.
A week ago, a missing system32 file caused us to be unable to access winlogon.exe and lsass.exe, meaning we couldn't logon. At all. Not EVEN in safe mode.
So we tried everything, and in the END safely reinstalling windows XP was the only solution. We also found our documents from the PREVIOUS ACCOUNTS safe and in their places, still taking up 188Gb of our HDD.
But the admin account, my boyfriend's, is now saying 'Access DENIED' when we try to access it from the current admin. Mine, being a limited account is still accessible.
I've tried the above solution, among other things like running DIR in MSDOS and Safe Mode, but nothing works. Our only solution now is to attempt recovery console.

There are many sites on the WWW which can explain how to format a hard drive and reinstall an OPERATING System, here is just one of them. As pointed out on this site, formatting and reinstalling should not be considered lightly.

However, in order to assist you, you MUST give us information about your pc both hardware and software. Please read this. Do you have a full genuine Operating System cd with its unique Product Key?

You must prepare well to do a complete reinstall without problems.



Your computer may have come with a set of CDs or a DVD for that PURPOSE. Read any instructions for included disks. If your HD has an installation disk that might do the job. For instance E machines completely erases your HD and reloads all your software simply by inserting it's program DVD. Maxtor HDs come with Maxblast, a program for formatting, low level formatting, and partitioning. Maxtor now belongs to seagate, 'They too come with an installation disk. For secure erasure special programs are AVAILABLE but that doesn't sound like your intent. These overwrite the entire HD several times to prevent any chance of DATA retrieval.thanks lads will post how i get on

use netstat -a to list all the tcp/ip ports but I always have one port not showing up although through other test I know it's in use because I got 10048 (port in use) error with that port. is there anybody can help me with this?

Generic: off the shelf no name brand from Wal Mart.
I know the difference between a ps/2 and a usb. My HP keyboard that come w/ the machine is ps/2. It DOESNT' work right now, it is source of all this dialogue. The wal-mart keyboard is also a ps/2. It didn't ork either...yes, I rebooted trying both and separate times, with the computer off. I went and bought an adapter ps/2 to usb from radio shack, and tried it too, FOLLOWING the same minute and correct processes detailed above.
As for the device manager, I have uninstalled and reinstalled about 5 times now. I bought PC Tools Registry Mechanic, because it said it fixes this CODE 41 problem...it don't! The error code says, "windows has loaded the device drivers, but cannot locate device. Under hardware, it say that the keyboard is plugged into the port.I'm still looking for some more solution, but...

After the COMPUTER starts up, it logins in and so on.. then once it loads PERSONAL settings, nothing happens. It just shows the background and the mouse. I pressed ctrl+alt+del and checked to see if explorer.exe was running and it was. I closed it and re-opened it USING the RUN function, but no luck.

Three of the COMPUTERS in my house have had this problem. I solved this one's (laptop) by using system restore. The desktop's system restore isnt working, it says something like 'System restore is not able to protect your computer. Try restarting and running system restore again.' I tried to do it again and the same error message came up.

I select the account that I want to delete. I select from the left options Delete your account. (I don't see any Tools option), and the delete window appear without giving me any option to delete. The same option I get by accessing either of the accounts. Both are Administrators.

In Device Manager are there any error listed (yellow exclamation/question marks) NEXT to either monitor, or Display Adapter?
I don't REMEMBER, but did you install monitor DRIVER, which came on CD with your monitor?
What screen resolution did you set up?
Nope! No errors and I even tried to update drivers(just to see) but they were up to date! The screen resolution is 1680x1050 and the monitor installation said it completed after I installed #2 off the Intel link. My screen looks WAY better, I can actually read the words without hurting my eyes! It is still a little blurry though but way better!! Thanks a lot for all of your HELP!You're welcome

MalcolmyThose POPUPS are coming from whatever mail client you're using. Separate from your internet login, it's prompting you for your username and password for checking your mail. Most mail clients typically do this automatically every 5-10 minutes when they check for mail.

If you go to your mail client's settings, you can adjust the time between checks or turn off auto-checking ALTOGETHER.

I have a Maxtor One Touch 300 GB external hard drive that I used to use with a LAPTOP running XP. I'm now trying to organize the files on it from a DIFFERENT computer (that also runs XP), and every file seems to be READ only. Whenever I try to delete a file, I get the message,

"Cannot delete [file name]: Access is denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I checked out the owner manual, and I didn't find any suggestions.

Remove checkmark from "read-only" box?You have to take ownership of the files. Once you have done that you will be able to do anything you like with the files....

I am in need of help

I have a windows xp pro CD it has installed on about 5 other computers perfectally fine. (old models) i have 1 computer that it does not want to install properly on. i have tested the ram (good) switched hard drives and tested both (good) i have reset default bios and fail safe bios. i have switch CD ROM drives. loaded Linux using the drive that's in it right now with no problems. i am stuck any ideas?Could you please explain " install properly". Actually it's "disable plugin"...

In case your's are wrong USE these settings in Properties under the E-Mail scanner tab:
POP3 port 10110
SMTP port 10025I recommend you go to your AVG configurations and check your mail SETTING in AVG configuration. It MIGHT throw you a LIGHT, why you couldn't send/receive mail in your outlook EXPRESS. Good luck to you on your holiday season.

As you know you can't return the laptop. I know SOMEONE on newegg just put the xpsp2c on his, but I can't SEEM to get in touch with him. So if someone could give me some insight to how to do it. Yes, you could, however, KEEP in mind, Windows XP is from 2001, its 6 years old, and not NEARLY as capable as Vista. Some drivers might be hard to find for a new laptop.

The system you linked to is more than capable of running Windows Vista. Acer is one of the manuf. offering the "XP upgrade" option for some Vista machines...

Unfortunately this is a special computer is used in a telecommunication system and it has only 4 USB port. I had to convert PS2 to USB and it didn't work :-(

Yes. There is no PS2 port. there are just 4 USB PORTS. I use a ps2 keyboard connecting with a convertor to USB port. the strange thing is that DEL(to enter BIOS) and CTRL+ALT+DEL works sometimes. and some times no key works. anyway EVEN when these keys work, all the other keys don't work. I've checked all other keys. I'll use a USP keyboard to check if it works. Thanks alot for your attention.

AlirezaA USB keyboard will mostly not work for this...they need drivers and drivers are not loaded until the OS loads. Setup is way before that...
Just so you know when you Tab it takes you to the next screen...when you use the spacebar it moves from item to item; up down arrows changes the value of the line that's highlighted and Enter accepts the value change.

F10 saves changes you've made and re-boots the machine with the new values you've entered...
You may want to check for a line in Advanced Setup that says "enable legacy USB support" and your keyboard may work after that change is made.

BrThat is the ultimate danger of "all USB" machines. You may need to reset your BIOS to factory defaults.

You may have motherboard jumpers to do this.

You may end up removing the CMOS battery from the
motherboard and then PUTTING it back in the motherboard
to reset the BIOS settings to the factory defaults.

This may give back your support for the keyboard.

I purchased PHOTO explosion deluxe version 3 and it won't let me install it. I UNINSTALLED the previous photo explosion SE FIRST. It COMES up with an error Runtime R6034, saying something is trying to load the runtime library incorrectly. Hi i have a LAPTOP that has XP home edition installed ,
It has the verification sticker on the bottom of the lap top.
I had lots of problems with this lap top so wiped everything on it, then realised it didn't come with an installation disk to get Windows back on, i installed a Friends copy but now cant updates from Microsoft as its a copy,
How do i get the ORIGINAL version back on my laptop? it was already installed when i bought it....

compaq and hp laptops have recovery partitions and upon booting you can access the recovery console that hp/conpaq has installed and restore computer so it has exactly same stuff as you saw when you LOADED windows first time.


2. What version of windows xp home you installed? Student/Teacher copy? OEM copy? Maybe you try reinstalling the version of xp home edition for which you laptop comes with so you can apply your given key if there is any?

Sorry I use desktop computer but label on side of my computer has key used by manufacturer to install it so if I were to ever install xp home again, I simply get the version that accepts my key.

The original was XP home edition, the sticker has a product key code. and a Microsoft certificate of authenticity code.

The version i've put on i believe is Home edition also.You need to do the online activation process...if there are problems there is an 800 # on the registration page.

WHAT?I had a similar problem with my old computer. It was because one of my hardware devices was not compatqable with windows. So I would get the message alot. You can try to reformat that works sometimes or you can do the more derastic and get a new computer. I would try the reformat first.


P.S. Sorry for you luck.I had the same problem. I increased the memory on my system as well as installed a larger hard drive. After reinstalling my programs, my computer has been fine ever since.

Upgraded to windows media player 11 but having a problem. When playing aa file sent VIA email the video will play then black out. Audio is STILL there but no picture.

Not much luck in finding some information on:
I am using XP Pro on FIC AN17. Just RECENTLY changed the Hard Drive. It was fine before the changed Hard drive. Everything is running fine.

The problem is that the Normal SHUTDOWN process via Start BUTTON. It would go through the motion of shutting down, but keeps restarting. (Automatically Restart is UNCHECKED).

I did DISCOVERED that it's will Shutdown via Taskmanager.

Hello to the forum. Im a newby here and recently aquired a Gateway COMPUTER with WIN 2000. Everything was WORKING properly on it, then the monitor had no picture on the screen. Ive checked the connections and all are insterted properly. I know the monitor is working as i tested it on another computer. When i attach it back to the Gateway, the light on the monitor goes from green to orange and back again. Also on STARTUP the lights on the keyboard flash then they dont light up at all. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP Home. I just recently had INSTALLED 2x256MB Memory sticks to boost my memory to 512MB. Now every time I boot up I get the following message: SQLDUMPER LIBRARY failed to initialize. The files needed may be corrupted or missing. Please re-run set up.

So how can I fix this? Do I have to wipe out XP and reload it? Or is there something else I can do to fix this problem? Thank You :-)From what I read about this, a unistall of MS Accounting 2007 may be the problem.

When I insert dvd PURCHASED at the store, the auto PLAY selects my tv tuner card (Catalyst Media center) to play the dvd. I would LIKE to CHANGE this to Windows Media as the default player. I have gone into file associations for dvd VIDEO & tried to set Windows Media as default, but no luck. I also wen to my compter, right clicked on the dvd drive & changed it there, but still no luck. Is there anything else I can try?

In most cases, these problems may be solved by disabling the DEP features. DEP can be turned off on a per-application basis, or turned off entirely for all non-essential Windows programs and services.

As a late note, AdAware's latest version has some issues (other mainstream products find things it has just overlooked in a scan) and I would certainly not count on this as my only source of spyware protection.

I reinstalled Windows XP SP2 to cure a booting problem. Now I am UNABLE to download/install any of the 79 updates Microsoft tells me I need, including IE7. I'm wanting to reformat my COMPUTER due to it being very slow and full of JUNK. But not sure on how to do it, i have looked on the net for tutorials but they are confusing to me lol.

One thing i am unsure about is that i don't have the cds to my pc, only the windows xp disk and the disk to my GRAPHICS card.
It's OK that you don't have CDs for the other things, you can download most (or all) of the drivers you'll need from the manufacturers' websites. I advise you do that before you format.

If you can tell us your full system specs (models and manufacturers of parts) I'm sure we can help you find everything you need.

Also, you'll want to backup any important files, music, etc. that you can't replace. Best to back them up onto a CD since you'll be formatting, unless you'd rather place them on another partition of the hard drive.Specs:

In my start menu > all program's i have these programs:

HP application recovery
HP PC recovery CD-DVD creator
HP PC recovery tools cd
HP PC system recoveryWell that will save a lot of trouble right there.

The next step will be to use those programs to create your recovery CDs/DVDs. The discs created should contain everything you need to format and REINSTALL all the software back to factory settings.
