Solve : Need Help for a Class Exam? |
Answer» Could someone help me with these questions? I have a class exam coming up on Wed., and there will be some questions covering Linux commands and such. I have no experience with Linux, and the course didn't really cover anything on it but just the history and overall what Unix and Linux is. I haven't taken my COBOL programming class that's supposed to help me with this either. Here are the questions the instructor gave me: mitchd, And s/he failed, of course LOL! www.homework.com |

Solve : Why should I use Linux?? |
Answer» Alright. I'm downloading, but I may need to go to bed before it's done. I have a hypothetical question about my hard drive and Linux/Windows. Let's say something goes terribly wrong and Windows crashes, forcing me to format that drive to access it. (Considering Windows' history, this isn't too far-fetched, though it's never happened to me) Even though Linux cannot read the files and open them, would it be possible for me to use Linux to copy the needed files/programs onto a special folder in the D: drive, format C:, and move the files back without damaging data? Yes, you can read NTFS files, but not write them to an NTFS drive. You could backup to a CDROM, across a NETWORK, to a thumb drive, etc. with a Live CD. I do recommend someone to back up ALL important files before attempting to load ANY new operating system, so take with a grain of salt. If you have any imaging software, use it! Otherwise, kust back up those important data files, IE favorites, address book, etc. By the way, Nero Express is a subset of Nero. That is to say, if you have Nero you have them both, but if you just have Nero Express, then that's all you have. However Nero Expres does a great job burning ISO's as well. Were you getting messages that your file had burned correctly when Nero Express reported it was done? Dilbert, from your references to Konqueror, can I take it that you have managed to install Kubuntu? If so, bring up the package manager. (Main 'start' menu under System, I think.) In the package manager, find the OPTION to edit the sources. Uncomment everything except the multiverse sources. Then use the update button. Once that is done, find the Synaptic package manager (do a search). You'll thank me for this. Install it. Once it's installed, close that package manager and open up Synaptic instead (same location in the main menu). You may then spend hours and hours and hours choosing which of the gazillion programs you want to install. When you're done, get yourself to a shell prompt ('command prompt') and type: Code: [Select]apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get upgrade You'll then have all the security patches installed and you're done. Warning: it took me many days to fully install Kubuntu and all the extra bits and bobs for a system for a friend a couple of weeks ago. |

Solve : Antivirus issue? |
Answer» I've installed AVG antivirus for Linux on my machine. I took Rob's advice and decided to have some on...as an extra precaution. Anyway, it installed and runs a scan fine. My problem is that in the GUI interface AVG won't let me run an update. I checked the properties on the folder and it is owned by root. |

Solve : Trouble mounting drives in CentOS? |
Answer» Hey guys. I've had to compromise and install CentOS 4 (had to get back into Linux, too much Windows). Anyway...I'm having some trouble mouting my 3 drives. 2 of them are NTFS and 1 is FAT32. Here's what my "fstab" has in it. Looks promising. But, it is like the original SuSE or am I gonna have to get used to some new things? Will I be able to use apt or yum or something like that? They're very similar, and built on the same base packages. SuSE's package/setup program always used to be YaST, which is one of the most user friendly I've tried. So that's what you want. Quote EDIT: It seems that the download links are busted (or at least for me). Is there a mirror for it?Did you try >here<?Thanks for that link. I'm about to start DOWNLOADING it. I'll let ya know how it goes and will post if I need help with anything. Thanks again. |

Solve : installing Suse Linux 10.0? |
Answer» HELLO, I cannont install Linux because, in spite of changing the BIOS to look to the CDROM first, it won't. The computer is 6 years old, a Pentium III 386, 512mg ram, 60g harddrive, partitioned into 2 30g drives, with XP installed on C. I do have a floppy (3 1/2), as well. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated...thanks! SusanAre you saving the changes made in bios correctly, SOMETIME it's a little convoluted to actually save them. A bit like 'enter to exit' if you know what I mean. Read the screen & think like an idiot, I mean that in a nice way & I hope it helps.Yes, I have saved the settings correctly-no offense taken. I actually think it is my bios, my son (a computer graduate in Canada)told me that because the computer won't boot to a cdrom, you can update your bios & sometimes that will help. But it is difficult -wish he could fly here & FIX this for me! Thanks for your input, if you get more ideas, let me know. I am going to call the support number and ask if they can e-mail me the files NEEDED for a floppy boot. Then I can get going with this. I am a total beginner for Linux but not a newbie to computers, I have worked with them for more than 10 years, and know a fair amount....thanks again. Well, an update for all.....after complaining repeatedly to Novell, I finally got some help. They sent me to a site to download a file which I then had to rawwrite to a floppy. Low and behold, it worked, I installed Linux Suse 10.0 and all is working fine. I do feel that I shouldn't have had to go through 10 e-mails to them to get what I should have been given in the first place, when I called them. If anyone wants to know the name of the file, let me know & I can e-mail you. |

Solve : Linux and antivirus? |
Answer» I've downloaded Ubuntu 6.06 and absolutely love it It is true that you do not need an AV for LinuxNo no no no NO! Not true! Yes, Linux is inherently less susceptible to viruses than some other OSes, particularly if the root account is adequately secured (e.g. only allowing shell logins on the machine itself) but Linux viruses DO exist and >can be nasty<. Als bear in mind that a Linux box may be in use as an email server, which certainly should be filtering out viruses. Check out the Clam Antivirus open source project."Yes, Linux is inherently less susceptible to viruses than some other OSes, particularly if the root account is adequately secured (e.g. only allowing shell logins on the machine itself) but Linux viruses DO exist and >can be nasty<." Rob: Even though I'm set up as an administrator when I need to get into some of the files/folders/functions of the root, the OS comes up with a screen asking for a password. Is that what you mean in the above statement you made? Check out the Clam Antivirus open source project. I'll do that today. Alan <>< thanks for the input Quote Even though I'm set up as an administrator when I need to get into some of the files/folders/functions of the root, the OS comes up with a screen asking for a password. Is that what you mean in the above statement you made?No - in fact you are simply be asked for a password so that a program can be run with superuser privleges (i.e. as root, the *nix superuser). No, I was meaning, ensure telnet is disabled (security risk) and only allow ssh logins from non-root users. See /etc/openssh.Ok Rob, I went to the etc/openssh folder and found 2 text files: one is moduli the other is the ssh_config with the following contents: ost * # ForwardAgent no # ForwardX11 no # ForwardX11Trusted yes # RhostsRSAAuthentication no # RSAAuthentication yes # PasswordAuthentication yes # HostbasedAuthentication no # BatchMode no # CheckHostIP yes # AddressFamily any # ConnectTimeout 0 # StrictHostKeyChecking ask # IdentityFile ~/.ssh/identity # IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa # IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_dsa # Port 22 # Protocol 2,1 # Cipher 3des # Ciphers aes128-cbc,3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,cast128-cbc,arcfour,aes192-cbc,aes256-cbc # EscapeChar ~ SendEnv LANG LC_* HashKnownHosts yes Beings I'm grossly new to Linux (and that will change, I guarantee it ) I don't know if this default setting is correct. If it is OK, if not, then how can I turn off/disable Telnet? I know how to do it in Windoze but not Linux. Another quickie: Unbuntu 6.06 only takes .deb files. How would I unzip a .tar or .rpm file? Alan <>< Quote Ok Rob,Hmm. You actually need a file named "sshd_config". I wonder where that is? Try locate sshd_config, to find it. If it contains a line "PermitRootLogin no" with no comment character at the start (#) then that's correct. Quote how can I turn off/disable Telnet? It probably isn't running anyway, but to test, try telnetting in from another machine. Or even from the same machine: telnet 127.0.0.1 - you should get "connection refused". Disabling it is complicated and depends on whether your system is runing inetd, xinetd or one of the other INET wrapper daemons. (Don't worry.) Quote Another quickie: Unbuntu 6.06 only takes .deb files. How would I unzip a .tar or .rpm file?Usually you won't need to, because Ubuntu has a huge set of packages that you can install. See the web site for selection of mirrors/package sets. These are the best, because you know they will work with your default installation of Ubuntu. Using Synaptic/apt will allow you to install all dependencies automatically (other software needed in order for a package to run). .tar files are unpacked thus: tar xf filename.tar Gzipped tar files like this: tar zxf filename.tgz For .rpm files, you probably should first look for a .deb package. If you REALLY want to install an RPM package, you need the alien program to convert. man alien for more. Enjoy the ride. Rob,
Looks like a steep learning curve, but "the ride" will be worth it in the end. Thanks Rob. Appreciate your expertise. Alan <>< :D SyslogFacility AUTHPRIV PermitRootLogin no PasswordAuthentication yes ChallengeResponseAuthentication no GSSAPIAuthentication yes GSSAPICleanupCredentials yes UsePAM yes X11Forwarding yesYou'll then need to restart the ssh server by issuing the following command: /etc/init.d/sshd restart, or possibly /etc/init.d/opensshd restart With ssh running, you can remotely connect to your linux box using >PuTTY< from any Windows box. This is my prefered method of working with Linux servers. You get a command line interface, but that learning curve is not quite so steep as you might think (not for you anyway).Thank Rob I've copied/pasted your instructions to a OpenOffice document and will get to it sometime this weekend. Right now I've got to fix a PROBLEM that one of my "fat-fingered" CUSTOMERS seems to have. Oh WELL, it keeps me employed Alan <>< |

Solve : GX1_Man is your signature reading my computer???? |
Answer» At first LOOK, I thought the information was generic, but when I looked closer, I noticed that the ISP is REALLY mine, and it is not a widely know one. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. EVERY one sees there own INFO, and no one's else. There is no security breech, nothing is being transmitted to others and you are safe. CHECK it out on another machine and look at my signature in this post. You will then see THAT machine's info. Not yours. |

Solve : How does one "get" UNIX?? |
Answer» Greetings, Are there any edition of UNIX that have a GUI as opposed to just a boring CLI?X Windows is the main GUI that people run on Unix or Unix-like systems (it has been ported to Linux, BSD, etc). Representations of X vary a LOT, due to the fact there are so many different window managers that can be used with X. X provides the client-server system for drawing windows; window managers prettify X. Then on top of that you get collections of applications that together form a system very akin to MS Windows. On Linux, Gnome and KDE are the big 2, both of which provide far more functionality than Win9x. Quote So where could I download a copy of the UNIX OS so I can practice with it? Would that be free or do I need to buy it from SCO now?Well if you really want Unix, you can now freely download Solaris from Sun, since they realised everyone was moving over to Linux... Tick the boxes on that download page, and be ready to burn lots of CDs... Alternatively, if you have a modest spec PC to install the system on, you might be better off downloading Linux. Ubuntu is one of my favourite distributions at the moment, although you have to ensure you read as much of the DOCUMENTATION as you can in order to get the most out of it. Quote Can I set a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP so I can choose which OS to load at boot up?Certainly. Split your hard drive into (e.g.) two partitions, and put XP on the first (bootable) partition. Then install Ubuntu (to the second partition). Quote Lastly, can anyone recommend some good books that will really help get my feet wet with using UNIX?You don't really need any books, to be honest. Read the documentation that comes with your system, and lean heavily on Google. There are a LOT of resources out there, and so many different topics that it's impossible to recommend just one book. If you decide to go with Linux, then head over to the Linux Documentation PROJECT, an excellent starting point.PCBSD is a quick way to get a usable unix system for free as well, if you just want to learn. It is based on FreeBSD which is a sturdy one as well. Lots of documentation on their site. http://www.pcbsd.org/ http://www.freebsd.org/Yeah I agree - BSD-ish systems are good choices too, although they aren't quite Unix. Thanks for those ideas. I will definitely try out PCBSD and Cygwin looks interesting too. Can anyone recommend some helpful UNIX books? Perhaps something from Amazon? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=s_b_rs/102-7586768-3616956?page=1&url=ix%3Dstripbooks%26rank%3D%252Brelevancerank%26fqp%3Drelevance%2501281000-%2502keywords%2501UNIX%26nsp%3Dscore%2501proj-unit-sales%2502bin-fields%2501none%2502post-process%2501docid-ve%2502dym%25010%2502search-type%2501ss%26sz%3D10%26pg%3D1&fpn=1&rank=%2Bsalesrank&x=15&y=11 The book I used in my course was Unix Shell Programming...talk about boring!Like I said, there's lots available at the Linux Documentation Project, if you don't mind reading stuff online. |

Doesn't Linksys have any drivers for any Linux OS's that will be able to work with a Linksys WRT54GS card that is in his PC? Neither one of those OS's in his PC will find the basestation to get online. |
