ok Ill try and give a run down of what happened and what i have here.

2x300 GIG sata2 maxtors in raid0 in nforce4 mobo on ports 3/4 using 2 partitions 60 gig o/s partition and remainder for storage

I tried to install norton system works on my system, during the install there was a problem and the program uninstalled and linked me to support.

I decided to try and install it once more but it said i recently installed or uninstalled and i needed to reboot to install again, which I did.

Upon rebooting norton goback halts the system with a gb_(error)

If i hold down f8 to try and enter safe mode i get a boot selector not the safe mode select screen

for some reason I thought id have to fix the master boot record. so I enter recovery console do a fixmbr and reboot. still get system hang when it gets to the norton goback screen

I then go to see if i can install windows and it LOOKS like my partitions are gone and windows now sees the raid as one big drive.

I load into recovery console do another fixmbr with a fixboot and a checkdsk /f. checkdisk hangs at 50%.

I reboot, don't see norton goback screen get to load windows screen but it crashes. reboot i get to select safemode/last know configuration screen. I try both options but windows crashes.

I went to see if windows installer sees 2 partitions again, but it still sees 1 big one.

How do i get it to see both partitions again, and if i do this will it fix my problem?

oh it looks like the chkdsk /r didnt hand at 50 its just took a long time @ that point, got it at 54% now when i tried it again. The last 4% prob took 10-15 minsWhy dont you format the computer it seem you have some error

Help, Recieved an e-mail from ABSA with a rtf attachment, have always been able to open the attachments and still can open certain rtf attachments, however there is one that will not open and I can't save it either, I keep on getting the following error:

Can't create file sss6108001.rtf. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shorcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.

I can open other rtf files without a problem and then to make it more COMPLEX if I forward the file to ANOTHER PC (VIA e-mail) I can open the file without a problem.

Any IDEAS? Why? How to fix?

My od HARD drive recently crashed but I had been backing it up on a WD250 EXTERNAL drive using Norton Ghost. I am running XP Home Edition on a Pentium IV system. I can see the files on the backup drive but they are all of a file type that Norton does not RECOGNIZE - namely .v2i. :-? I can find only one reference to this fil type and the application that creates it is nothing that I have ever KNOWINGLY used.

I NEED to restore some of the files but have no idea how to proceed. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

On my pc running win 2000 I installed a multi user office professional copy, worked fine. When I went to REGISTER all the LICENSES were USED. I then install another copy, this time a multi user with frontpage without removing the initial copy, was hoping just to add the new license number. Install went okay and registered fine but outlook would not function, everthing else fine. Removed both copies and reinstall the one with frontpage but now I get this error statement when I try to OPEN"Unable to open default e-mail folders. Could not open item, try again". I did a search for .pst files but could not FIND any. Have run repair a few times but no change. Help! pleaseSend a email to msoft......

I downloaded a PAID file from Walmart yesterday for my daughter. She wanted to burn a CD of a song. I sent it to my Dell Musicmatch. It won't play and this is what it says.

The windiows media DRM update will send a unique identifier to a microsoft service on the internet." When I click ok, nothing HAPPENS. Any suggestions on what this means?

I don't understand how to use the Knoppix Live CD. *censored*, I don't know what a Live CD is! I'm more than happy to ditch Windows for Linux, if it will do the trick, but Knoppix, eMule, Donkey, ET. al., are Greek to me. :-?

As far as file sharing goes, I've used Limewire, but the others are a whole nother animal (pun intended).

I'm using WinXP on my desktop to get Linux for my laptop.

At some point in the last couple of days, WMP has become the default player for all of the websites I visit. nhl.com, break.com, comedycentral.com etc. they've all mysteriously changed media players on me, and none of the clips work anymore!

I generally stay far far away from using IE and WMP WHENEVER possible, and usually USE winamp as my default and quicktime for websites or failing that, realplayer. I'm on Win XP home, using firefox 1.5.0.1 with norton protection and have WMP 9.

I tried looking for ways to change the media player, such as deleting all of my cookies and revisiting the sites so I could select my preferred MP, which nhl.com always does, but now all of a sudden, it's not asking me, just automatically WMP.

I also tried OPENING winamp, then going to "Set program access and defaults" in the start menu, checking "custom" and making sure it is set to "my current media player". Doesn't seem to work.
Seems I've SOLVED my own problem. I still can't explain why everything changed all of a sudden though. I downloaded WMP 10 (as I had 9) and now the websites work.

Do you need NSW or can you use freeware products such as AVG Home Edition and various free firewalls and anti-Trojan programs?Old Norton stuff could be restarted if you reformatted the drive and reinstalled, but I don't know if that has changfed.

You will FEEL better if you do the right thing though.

I can't play video files at full screen mode anymore. This happen in Windows Media Player and Window Media Player Classic.

When I try to play movies in Full screen, it just got kicked back to normal size.

I have other players such Acer Arcade and Real Player. These can play full screen properly.

You have two of those. Get rid of the one with no name.

Do you use the MSN toolbar? If not, get rid of it:

That's at first glance. I am not certain this will fix the problem, but it might, and it will make Windows run faster.I am using those programs. I DELETED most of the 08 entries... No obvious change seen.

I've now uninstall most of programs that require startup at windows start and done registry clean and reinstall some of the system drivers and utilities. Still no improvement.

The computer really cause me to scratch my head. I think I need to go for the last resort- Reformat...

When I try to close a Word document the word icon on the task bar turns ORANGE and blinks. To complete the shut down, I must click on it then select either save or don't save the changes, no changes were made. If however, I hit the save icon on the toolbar first, it will shut down. Also, anytime while in a word document if I go to tools/options, the orange word icon blinks again.

cant hurt to give it a whirl. Ah, but in my experience System Restore never works on automatically-created restore points. Go ahead, but set a MANUAL restore point about once a week. Bigger chance of success. But I leave it off so it can't keep a virus in a restore point. I just use SpywareBlaster to make snapshots...

I am on dial up acroos the city and the location they are at they use Sprint DSL with our company name as the @part.com. I got a READ receipt BACK that states someone other than the person I sent it to read it. It said so and so on behalf of a (which is the FIRST initial of her name didnt really say her full name) read the e-mail with that subject line that we know is non work related. Does that mean that person read the e-mail? If so is there a WAY to prevent that?maybe the i.t person......who monitors the server/net system has....done this......

I ran the direct3d test in dxdiag which SHOWS a few diffrent tests, this is one ....


The BOX is ment to spin around (slowly i assume) When i do the test it spins around so fast i can't even see the image on the sides of the box.

Now i've only done this test a few times before but i don't remember the box spinning around at super high speeds like it does when i do it now. This isnt NORMAL right?

I had a go at reinstalling directx but the install just SKIPS the whole 'installing' part and says its done.You have posted this problem in another thread/section.

Oh, and make sure you know what version. Click on HELP and About Windows Media Player. What version is it?

Also, go to Tools > Options > Privacy (tab). Note the checkbox at the bottom which says "Save file and URL history". Make sure it's checked. While you're there, clear the history and your CACHE to save disk space.

I am currently having a problem with MEDIA player 10.

I have loads of video's on my pc and utill yesterday thay all WORKED great.

But now all of a sudden, when I go to play any of them I just get:

'Connecting'
'Sending Request for codec'
'DOWNLOADING Codec'
'Error downloading codec'

This flashes up at the bottom of the screen and then the file plays but as an ADIO file, with visualisations insted of the picture.

I have tryed other player's and they just seem to crash.

Can anyone help me out?Maybe you just need to download a complete set ogf codecs.

i checked there, it doesn't show up on the accessory list, it does however show up on the main start menu, (i used to have a shortcut there) but when you click on it, it says paint cannot be found and when you send it to the desktop it says it cannot...

I formated my computer a while back, and made a copy of my Outlook contacts. Unfortunately, it didn't occur to me that the events set with the contacts would be gone when I imported them.

For example, I have a list of PEOPLE with birthdays. All of the reminders for their birthdays are all gone. Is there anyway to get these reminders back without having to input them manually, or input the contacts again manually?

NEVER regret a format. It does a world of good for the system. The only reason we don't do it daily is that reinstallation is a PAIN in the backside. That and settings, lost data that isn't backed up, etc...

I'm having TROUBLE conecting my second computer to the internet through my linksys wireless router. I have it wirelessly connected to my laptop but i want to connect it to my second computer usinging a phone line through ONE of the extra ports in the back. On my second computer it says it's connected with it but i cant get onto the internet, it's the same old "this page cannot be displayed" message. PLEASE tell me what i'm doing wrong i've tried EVERYTHING i can think of but nothing works. You can't use a phone line!!! It may look similar, but it's not the same at all. You need an RJ-45 CAT5 ethernet cable. You can get them at any computer store, Wal-Mart,L Radio Shack, etc. That will help you solve your problem.

How do I remove the 'message forwarded on' an e-mail? I forwarded a letter to one of my addresses from my work, and it says who and what time it was sent. I want to remove that so I won't GET into any trouble at work. Thanks for any help. Just compose a NEW email and cut and paste. I already sent the e-mail. i'm using internet explorer and yahoo browser. When i try to click into a link ,a new window will open but it produce a blank page. I click refresh several time but still blank page.

At first i thought it might be a problem with the page, but then when i went to other site and try to click into link it will open up a new window, but again it produces blank page.

I tried to switch of my pop blocker but it's useless. The new window still produce a blank page. If any of u guys know how to fix this i will be most grateful.

Before you download it , create a new folder called Hijackthis on your desktop Download hijackthis and save it to that folder , then go into that folder and unzip it .......and run it from there. Do a system scan and save logfile ......then copy the logfile here ....... You may have to use more than one post depending on how big it is or ......... Zip it and attach it to your post.

It just started yesterday. i think it started when i first download this DVD ripper and VOB file converter.
i'm using windows XP . this problem happens to all website, eg. the download link that dl65 gave, i cant access it without opening it in a new tab.

Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

FlameTry removing it with CCleaner. When installing CCleaner, uncheck to box at the beginning of the installation for YAHOO toolbar if you don't want it installed. And, if you're not familiar with CCleaner, I suggest you click on the link on their home page for "Click here for a Quick TOUR...".

To remove a program using CCleaner, click on Tools; you'll the list of programs in the right panel.

I'm on a PIII with XP Pro.

Is there a utility to CONVERT .sfil files into something that Windows can understand? I grabbed a bunch of neat sound files from someone's Mac and put them on my USB key. Of course XP has no idea what to do with them and my Google search didn't turn anything up. I think these sounds are from the good ol' System 7 days (insert nostalgic sigh here).

As a side note, I got the old files from an OS X machine but the files themselves were on an old Zip disk circa 1997ish. So X wouldn't even play them in the Finder like in olden days. I opened and exported the sounds with something called "Juicer" to both soundfiles and Quicktime files. When I transferred them to my Windows box the .sfils are all about 30 to 100k (normal), but the QT files are 1 to 2k (not normal). When I play them in the movie window I hear an awful staticky click and then ominous silence for a few seconds as the player's progress bar slides to the right. They worked fine on the Mac. Something must have gone wrong.

I filmed something sideways with my cellphone's video camera and when I uploaded it to my computer it PLAYED in Real Player, WMP and Quick TIME but the image was sideways. Is there a way I can ROTATE it so I can put it on a website? Or is there an HTML code for rotating it on the site when I upload it?

then in the system properties box click Hardware tab ....then click Device Manager ........ then scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on the + in front of USB Controllers .... this will expand and you will see the USB items that are seen ...... click on each of then one at a time and see if it says they are working or if there is a yellow exclamation MARK .

How many USB port do you have ? Are they onboard ( built into the mobo ) or were they added later ?

I will be getting a new computer in the next couple of months. I would like to try my hand at creating screen captures and wallpaper. Do you have any advice that you can give me, I’m just a beginner? Can you scan a document and CHANGE the text.
If you can, Do you need a software to do it or hardware device.You SEEM to have answered your own question.

Instead of a scanner taking a 'picture' of something, the software can also 'recognise' the writing and create a text TYPE file which can be edited.

If you wanted to edit a 'picture', it would have to be done in a paint SHOP type program.hi,

I can't install directX on my pc, whenever I try to the install bar just FLASHES past and a message pops up saying that the installation was a success even though it's no where to be found.What VERSION was previously installed and why has this occured? Does anybody know if how the printing SETUP of a document is established. i.e. Are there settings that can be saved in a document that can override those of a local account such as paper size?

I'm having some trouble here with some users having unpredictable printing. On their "Printing Preferences" from Printers and Faxes in Control Panel I've SET the paper size to A4 but often the documents are sent as letter. There's a few other THINGS and I'm wondering could it be that the documents that they are OPENING could be changing the printing preferences, and also if the documents contain printer settings themselves.You could save the document settings you have chosen in a template. RENAME the template Normal 1 (or whatever the default isn't!! normal (which is the name of the file the template for word screen is saved into doesn't let you name over the top - XP may let you though but I haven't tried it.

When I download files that contain viruses mostly from Limewire how do they infect my computer when I don't even execute them? :-?

I understand that they would show up in my virus scans just for being there, but how do they execute themselves without me starting them? I ask this because I thought I was reasonably safe scanning all the files I downloaded before I ran them, but I downloaded a virus and prompty deleted it after discovering it, but it kept DUMPING me to the BSOD after a few minutes of starting Windows.

The problem has since been fixed, but I am curious, and yes I know Limewire and other P2P networks are infested with this sort of stuff.There's some code that makes it run immediately. I know, not very helpful, but if we posted how to create the basis for viruses, they'd pop up in great numbers... WRAITH.......

So after quite a long bout with my first built comp I finally have it stable. Except for ONE minor annoyance. For reason the USB ports wont read/sense any flash DRIVE or wireless mouse. HOWEVER it works fine for a USB keyboard. Any suggestions?

I intended to record a 90 minute file in Soundforge and fell ASLEEP and the file kept recording and is 67 gigabytes of mostly NOTHING. Now Soundforge can't open the file to ecit it because it is too big. Is there any way to use MS-Dos or some other technique to split or divide the file to save only the beginning of the file and delete the rest so I won't lose what I RECORDED?
