Hi

A friend has emailed me some files before leaving on an OVERSEAS trip, the files have the extensions of .dgcr, .DGDR, .dgd and .dgc. I have searched the web for programs to open these, all I find is a US tax program which I actually did attempt, without success.

Does ANYONE know what programs will open these files? Can I convert them to another type of file and open them with something else? They should contain text and image files.

ChadDo you know what program was used to generate the files? Or what kind of computer they were created on (e.g. PC/MAC)? If they were created in a specific desktop publishing program, the chances are you will only be able to open them in that program. DTP programs all use proprietary file formats that tend to resist format conversion!No, unfortunately I hve no idea what program was used! He's not on a Mac though.

Is there a way to explore the files and find out what created them? If not, there should be! this should be a standard field in the 'properties' of a file. (hello? Bill, are you listening?)

Hmm... Have a look at *Blocked Russian URL*/resources/dgca/dgca_guide.html]>this page<[/url]. It may be that you have one of these compressed/split files. Try using that program to recombine and ascertain what the original file is?

MY system is a IBM 530 e-series,2158model win98.,CD-rom is IBM.I've lost my drivers to my cd-rom and I can't find them on my computer.There are other drivers on a list but NONE shows for my model for IBM.In SEARCH query it mention about 32-bit drivers but can't locate any on my machine.I have recovery disk,but can't use the cd-rom.Where can I go to get the drivers.IBM don't support 98 ,i've looked there.Try looking in C:\Windows\System32try www.download.com they SEEM to have just about anything

I have Microsoft Works 8 installed in my Mesh computer.I have been USING the calendar with no PROBLEMS untill now.I now get an error message Works 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close,this message only come up if I open calendar to edit reminders ect.Ihave tried uninstalling Works 8 and re-installing,still getting error message.

Does anybody know a good, free music organizer for down load? Something I can type my audio and MP3 collection into. My girlfriend was WRITING a report and MICROSOFT Word started acting really funny (like posting 100 "i"s in the middle of her writing, along with some other things). She saved her work, closed it down and restarted her computer. Now, she can't do anything in Word. She can open her old doc, but can't EDIT anything. Most of the menu options are greyed out, as well. She can't do a thing and she's yelling at me. Help!!

I am getting this error message in Music Match Jukebox everytime I try to play a CD. I've tried everything I know to do.

what type of soundcard do you have? Can you play Mp3s? You might need a new driver to make the software and hardware communicate better I'm sorry but I looked everywhere and can't find what soundcard I have. It isn't listed in My drivers when it populates a list.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It 7.0 without any problems for ages but SUDDENLY, about 10 days ago, it stopped letting me open images. Everytime I try to use the open function to program freezes. I've left it for up to 20 minutes and nothing happens so in the end I have to close it with Task Manager.I can still open jpeg files into Picture It (by RIGHT clicking on the file and SELECTING open with), but then it won't let me use Save As.

I've tried unistalling and reinstalling, but this makes no difference. I got fed up with it and went and BOUGHT Microsoft Digital Image 2006, but this has the same problem as well. Today I've also had a problem using Nikon VIEW when downloading pictures off my camera; It downloads them ok but then freezes and does not display the thumbnails like it used to. I have not come across any other problems. Does anyone have any idea what it causing it?

hi i have a problem with possibly a few programs but right now im only sure about IE 6.
when i run IE the window opens up normally and the home page loads.
if i then type a url in the address bar say www.google.com.au and hit enter/click go absolutely nothing will happen the page will stay as the home page and at the bottom of the page it will say done as soon as i add the http:// before the url so say i entered http://www.google.com.au and hit enter/clicked go it will WORK completely normally. the other program i have had trouble with is and file transfer program that wont transfer the file although i can get access to the location to see the files which im assuming is probably related and is not associating the download with the ftp protocol.

by the way Firefox does not have this problem. It works fine.

i have tried going into the registery and going to the place that specifies the default prefixes to use and everything is normal. I am assuming it is not hardware related as it is specific to these few programs IE 6 and PcAnywhere. i am using Norton Internet security 2006 i have had it installed before this started happening, windows firewall is TURNED off and so is my router firewall i have tried resetting all of IE internet options with no success as well as resetting the router. i have the latest updates for IE 6 and cannot reinstal IE because when i download the installation file off of the microsoft website and try and install it, it says i have a NEWER version and it wont install it.

have you tried to scan your pc with anti-spyware?

try to look in the IE folder in you program file, click "iedw" icon (ie crash detectionwow who would have thought i would leave out mentioning im using win xp pro.
anyway yes i have scanned computer with ad-aware, looked in hijack this(nothing out of the ordinary) and scanned with norton anti-virus 2006 nothing turns up.

i clicked on the file iedw.exe nothing happened?

Dell Inspiron 1100, P4, 2GHz running MS Office XP Pro

I can't [highlight]save[/highlight] or [highlight]save as [/highlight]any MS Word or Excel file on this laptop. Problem started 3 DAYS ago. When I try EITHER of these functions, the CURSOR turns to hourglass, but then nothing happens. No other KEYS or functions will work. When I then try to kill the file (X upper right) I get a notification that "This program is not responding."

I have done soft and hard re-boots; no help. I have done Norton full SYSTEM scan; no infection.

I have made no changes or additions to the laptop.

Any ideas?

You ran a Norton AntiVrius scan, but what about Spyware? Do you have the install CD for word and Excel so you can just reinstall files?

Hi i'm new to this site but i am having problems with uploading files to the internet... i use a asus wireless card (both on my laptop and pc). The pc works fine with file uploads and everything.... but the laptop can not upload files... it surfs the net ok though. I have tried formatting the hd and reinstalling windows and PLAYING with firewalls and anti virus settings... i'm on winxp HOME. If i go in to safe mode wiht networking support it works so its definately a software thing and not a hardware. any help would be greatly appreciated.. also ask me more questions if you feel the urge.Be more specific...
What kind of errors do you get?If i wait long enough it will eventually comeup with page can not be displayed... this is using photobucket.com.... some times it will like load the top tiny bit of the picture and the rest will be blank.... i have tried with both mozilla and ie.What type of image is this? PNG? JPG? TIF?its a jpg immage...The fact that it works in safe mode but not in normal mode would SEEM to indicate 2 things:
1. You have a lot of unneeded services running at startup
2. You have a lot of programs loading unnecessarily at startup
Pare down the programs that load at startup. You can always use the start button or a shortcut when they are needed.
Check to see what services are running at startup. If it is a default XP INSTALLATION you can bet there is a lot unneeded crap running. For guidance on services http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12. Read and follow directions carefully.

How can I follow an installation of ANYTHING I install on my PC?

I assume that once a Game, Program, etc. is going to install, it will place different items in different "areas" to make it RUN correctly.

We had installed a game a while back and now have a new PC, but for the life of me I cannot FIND my original disk to this game!!! (found the box-but no cd!!)
I would like to retrieve all installation of this game from old PC and place correctly onto new PC.

Any Suggestions? Ideas?...please?

A friend has asked me if there is a way he can print all the thumbnails in a folder. I told him I dont think there is but will investigate.

He wants to open a folder with a load of PICTURES in and do a print so that all the thumbnails of the pictures in the folder are printed.

He doesn't want to start copying the pics to a word processor and reducing the size etc. He just wants to click and print.

Is there a way?

DavvaSo let me get this straight, he wants to print the pictures in thumbnail size? If he just SELECTS all of the pics using the mouse, right-clicks on ONE of them and HITS print, it won't print them all? Normally, if you open a picture, and try to print it in the picture and fax viewer, it will give you the option to print the rest of them with whatever size you want...

I got a .avi file that I like... not much. I can use the video, but the sound that goes with it doesn't work with what I'm doing. I need just the video portion of the .avi, and want it to play soundlessly. Is there a way to rip said video? I've done a few Google searches but only came up with THINGS like turning MPEGs into AVIs and that kind of thing... :-/Sorry to bump, but is there a way? :-?For SURE it can be done, but I don't know which software packages can do this. QuickTime Pro probably can. Have you tried Vidomi? That might be able to do this.I never tried but I guess video editing software should be able to let you delete the AUDIO track?Not perfect, but you can put your clip n Windows movie MAKER and mute the audio - at least you don't have to buy or download anything, since you don't like th evideo THAT much. Nero will not recognise cd-rw disks. It will read and burn dvd+ and DVD+rw and cd-r and dvd+r. I can erase DVD+rw , but if I put in a cd-rw it will give me a message "please incert a disk of correct type or modify the setting of your compulation to make them COMPATIBLE" How do you change the settings. The burner is a NECnd1100a on secondary set as master with nothing else on the secondary. I have updated the firmware to 1.a3. ThanksDon't know for sure but I think you may need to INSTALL InCD if have not done so. I believe it WOULD be on your Nero CD.

What's your OS? Did it ever work correctly or did you just install it? If it used to work, but not now, I would sugtgest uninstalling and reinstalling as a basic first step. lazlo..... WITHOUT being there it's a little difficult to be sure ...but it sounds like "Incd" may hold the solution .

dl65 Thanks Guys for the quick replys. The computer is a new build (first time for me) In has an intel MB with a 3.1 gig celeron prosseser. 512 of RAM. Win xp pro with service pack 2 (I do not have service pack 1, I could't find it on the MS site. The burner a NECnd1100a is from another computer that I had with win xp pro and it worked fine. I loaded InCd and it did not change my situation. It is really weird since all other function work well. It will copy a cd with DVD X copy. It will burn and erase a DVD+rw. It will burn a data dvd on a DVD+rw and aDVD+r. I have tried re-installing Nero SEVERAL times. any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

My OUTLOOK 2000 calender stacks Saturday and Sunday on top of each other on the right side of the calender rather than Sunday on the left and Saturday on the right. How do I change the settings to get the calender back to Sunday on the left and Saturday on the right.....I'm looking at Outlook 2003, so there may be differences. LOOK under Tools, Options, Calendar Options. Are you with me so far? If so, click on Calendar Options and see whether you have an option to set "First day of week". On my system, that's set at Sunday, which I believe is the default setting when Outlook is INSTALLED. If I change that to Monday, then the calendar DISPLAYS S and S together on the right side, which is what you have. So, if you can find this setting in Outlook 2000, it should solve your problem.I am not on the computer that has this version of Outlook on it. I will GIVE it a go this evening and see if I can get it changed.

Anyway, I have WINDOWS ME and WMP 9. I recently bought the new P!nk CD called "I'm Not Dead". Unfortunately, there were two bonus tracks only available in Europe.
I downloaded them off LimeWire and added them to I'm Not Dead under Pink under My Music under My documents.

Sorry for all the details.

So, I went to "add file" in WMP. It added the two EXTRA songs but in a different album all by themselves. I need to know if it's possible to have the original and downloaded songs together on the same album when listening to them on WMP.
It put the original ones under "I'm Not Dead (Pink)" and the downloaded ones under "I'm Not Dead".

If it helps, the original songs are .WMA files while the downloaded ones are .MP3 files. They also have different bit rates.

You could open all the files and save them as a playlist. Just highlight them both and open them, then reorganize them as you SEE FIT, then click File > Save Now playing list As... and make a new playlist. All files should be there. File format should not matter as I commonly mix WAVs with MP3s and such. Cool. Way better than nothing that's for sure!

Could SOMEONE recommend me freeware software that can create a backup of my Battlefield 2 DVD which is slowly starting to crack?

The cracks reach from the center to the middle, a few more games and it will most likely jam my DVD-drive. The DVD is still working properly as the cracks haven't reached the data part yet.

I have access to a computer with a DVD reader and Writer, all I need is good software. Can't afford retail versions and don't bother with illegal software.

Or is there perhaps a way for me to repair the DVD-ROM?

The cracks have not yet reached the data part, only the plastic inner part. But they seem to expand each time I use the DVD.

I would have liked to make a back-up, but I don't know how. Still don't now that I have to.


With that program - will I be able to put the BF2 DVD in the reader, an empty DVD-R in the Rewriter, click a button and sit back?

Okay, serious problem here. My little brother installed OpenMG and SoundStage by SONY onto my machine. When I told him to get rid of the program, he went in and deleted the guts rather than used Add/Remove Programs. Now, every time I start the computer (or a program on the computer), OpenMG attempts to re-install itself and will not uninstall via Add/Remove Programs. I fight with it for about ten minutes per startup.

I'm operating on Windows XP...can you recommend any free downloads which will rid my computer of this program? It was installed too far back to system restore, or else I would try that.

Dassala Remove all traces of the program from safe mode.

Clean your registry as well.

The installer is RESIDING somewhere, probably in C:\windows\temp. Remove the contents of that folderdassala....... The first thing I would do is D/L and reinstall the 2 apps ........ and then remove them using Add/Remove function in the control panel........ If for some reason that won't do it ...then I would be going into the registry and doing a search for "OpenMG" then remove all the entries it finds .......... there will be multiple entries so after you find and delete one entry run search again until you see the result displayed " Finished searching through the registry" at that point you know you have removed all the entries ........now do the same thing ...only this time search for "SoundStage "

To do a registry search ...do the following ........
Click start / Run .....and in the run box type regedit followed by pressing the ok key ........ the registry editor box will open .......click the edit button and then Find ....the find box opens ...in the find what box .....type OpenMG .......then click find next .........if there are any entries ......you will be taken directly to that location ...........very carefully hilite the entry and delete it . now go back and search again for SoundMG ....repeat this until you get this message displayed ....... "Finished searching through the registry"
Now use the same procedure for the other unwanted entry .....Soundstage ........

A word of caution ..........ALWAYS make a backup of the regististry just in case you remove the wrong thing .......

If you are not COMFORTABLE editing your registry ..........then DON'T ......... look for someone who is used to doing manual registry edits and have them assist you.......

I've cleaned out the registry and deleted every single file I could find relating to SonicStage (that's what it's called...not SoundStage) and OpenMG. Yet, the problem continues to get worse. I'm fighting with it even as I type this. Am I at a dead end? Is reformatting my only hope?

DassalaType - msconfig - in the Run window and see if there is any reference to either of these programs in the Start-Up tab.dassala....... OpenMG......is related to real player ..........( real player is full of spyware and crap ) Have a look and see if Real player is installed ........if it is remove it and see if that improves things ....... ( you can always reinstall it ........but there are better things )

Go off line .......reboot into safe mode and then clean out the temp folder , then run ad aware SE , Spybot , antispyware ( if you're using win 2k or XP ) ...... you might ALSO d/l and run ..... ccleaner ....... get it at .....

dl65 Phew! I'm not sure which thing did it, but I ran the program you suggested and fixed everything in msconfig. Safemode seemed to help for deleting my temp file as well.

I have NAV 2005 running on a P-III with WinXP Home. I recently installed a Creative Professional E-MU 0404 PCI Digital Audio System sound card. When I booted up, NAV's auto protect was disabled. I was able to download and run a patch from Symantec's site to ENABLE NAV. However, everytime I boot up, I must manually enable auto protect. Does anyone know if the conflict between NAV 2005 and the E-MU 0404 has been resolved in NAV 2006?DOn't know about that, but you may want to try AVG Free (for free) before shelling out more cash to Norton. Just a thought. Have you opened NAV and checked the settings there? I'm using an older VERSION of NAV. My version has a checkbox for ""Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up". I'm having a problem with Office apps on a computer of mine.
It works fine for everything EXCEPT when I go to "SAVE As". A regular save works fine, but when I go to save as to change file name, location etc the following happens:

I can edit the name and save it to My Documents, but as soon as I try to change the folder or navigate somewhere else via the save as window, it freezes completely and has to be shut down.

This happens for Excel and Word when I to Save As and also OUTLOOK when I try to attach a file. Again I can send a file thats directly in My Documents but can't navigate anywhere. It has been working fine for months then out of the blue it just started.

I've tried freeing up some ram by stopping programs from autostarting and restarting, and removing nearly all the FOLDERS and files off my desktop to no avail. I've also deleted some files to clear up room on my HARD drive but there is plenty there.

Please help! I really don't want to reinstall unless I absolutely have to as it would be a big hassle.

Dell Lat. 600, WinXP. WMP worked fine listening to Internet Radio stations (ex. www.espnradio.com) then yesterday, it stopped working. When clicking to hear the stream, WMP QUICKLY goes through the "opening" and "connecting" sequence and then DISPLAYS "Ready." No stream and clicking Play does not work. I was using WMP 9 but upgraded to 10 hoping that would solve the problem, but it didn't. All other files are working fine using WMP (clips from the Internet and music files on computer).

My Desktop PC on the same home network is able to get the Internet radio streams.

The page does display the following error:

Whenever I send a message from an account in outlook it automatically changes the sender to one of my other accounts.

For example:

I choose my sympatico account to send tim a message, When I look in my sent folder outlook has instead chosen to use my gmail account.

Attempted Solutions and Tests....
I have sent myself a message and I can verify that it is COMING from the wrong E-mail account.
I have tried deleting the gmail account in my outlook but outlook just CHOOSES the next account down to send the E-mails from.

Has ANYONE ever heard of anything like this or have any idea how I might stop the shenanigans

Tild99Before you press the send button, there is a button to the right of the send button, it is call Account. Click the down arrow and choose the email account that you want this message to be sent from.

The problem is that after I click that down arrow, pick an account, verify that it will be sent from that account, Outlook SENDS from another.

I gave up trying to fix this problem and UNINSTALLED, then reinstalled office.
It's working now.

A client's laptop (Compaq Pressario 2113EU) had all kinds of problems so they tried to re-install Windows (XP Pro), but not from the original WinXP discs.
I am not sure what happened PRECISELY, but they had lots of error messages referring to missing files and did not succeed.

Now, the status is that the laptop crashes during Windows start-up (even in safe mode), most likely due to missing drivers.
If I boot from CD, I can still see the DATA files, but I do not have the software to rescue it.

I have ordered the formal recovery discs from HP/Compaq (the system is 2nd hand and was delivered to the new owner without discs) but I am afraid that installing these will LOSE the data files (no recent backup, of course) as it will probably go through hard disk formatting.
So, I need advice from you, experts, out there.

How do I rescue the data? And how do I proceed in the best way?

Hello everybody!

My problem:

I receive every day about 300 mails, everyone has an attachment (a EXCEL '.xls' file ). These mails are stored in a specified folder. As "e-mail PROGRAM" I use Lotus Notes. I would like to separate the attachments from the mails and store the Excel files in another directory automatically. This means that I don't want to open every single mail and extract the attachment because it will take too long! I thought that maybe it was possible to accomplish this action with a batch file when I open the "e-mail program" or I boot my COMPUTER.

I've found that the "e-mail program" Eudora ALLOW you doing this operation. The problem here is that this program doesn't distinguish between the attachments and put also unwanted attached file in the directory.

In order to maintain Lotus Notes as "e-mail program" I've found that AAP (Advanced Attachment Processor) and DetachIt are both useful, but they aren't freeware.
I was wondering if it isn't possible to emulate the way these programs act.

I'm using MSN messenger and tried to help my friend through my computer by remote controlling. We both have a DSL and firewall routers, so the messenger just said that it wasn't able to find the host's name.

I succeed to remote control (in MSN) our local computers, but not my friend who lives a few kilometers from us.

I searched the net and read many articles about this stuff, but without a good tip. Finally I found this site and hope that I will get some hints.

I have tried some remote control programs, but they were commercials or SPYWARES. My firewall probably does this routing and hides my true ip and won't let me contact my friend by remote. Should some ports be OPENED or firewall settings be modified? I use only windows firewall, so...

I have also tried to reveal my ip for instance at www.whatismyipaddress.com, but I don't know how to contact my friend with messenger by ip.

Reinstalled Thunderbird, AVG, ZoneAlarm etc after problem with Admin password.

Googled but NONE of the possibles SEEM to match.

I try to turn my LAPTOP on and all i get is

The on button LIGHT (Green)
The CABLE light (Green)
The battery light (amber)

There is no noise at all when i switch it on.

Can anyone tell me what is its problem... Is the light on the battery supposed to be amber? How OLD is the battery?

I have a portable 40gig usb hard drive (ntfs). I want to transfer data from pc running win98se (fat32) to pc running xp (ntfs).
At the moment win98 doesn't recognize usb drive so if I reformat usb drive to fat32, will xp recognize it? And if so, how do I do this?From what SOURCE are you storing ntfs?

I recently purchased a digital voice recorder. I records in .wav format. I want to edit and clean the file up and then put them on CD to play in a regular CD player.

Questions:

I can do the editing in Goldwave, but what am I supposed to CONVERT .wav into to make it CD player COMPATIBLE?

If Goldwave does not give me that option is there a FREE or cheap program that will?

I found one that will burn directly to CD, but I want to convert it and keep it on my hard drive until I need it on CD later on.

Any help?

You need a program that will burn an audio cd. Dropping wavs will normally write a data cd.

I'm not having any computer problems, but I've got a question regarding using Adobe Audition? Do any of you consider it a good idea to attempt a high hiss reduction and still keep the signal intact without loss of sound quality? I had done a test last NIGHT when recording from an old mono record of mine. (In fact, the original issue of Little Richard's hit LONG Tall Sally, which had some slight noise.) I had made a DECISION to record from the record and make the recorded sound sample mono. After doing a light decrackle (I use Clickfix for this, instead of the standard click removal in Adobe Audition), I selected the entire file and went to the hiss reduction FEATURE. I went to the graph and set it at -40db (the highest it goes), and set the noise floor slider bar to -36db. I chose to reduce the noise by 40db. When that was finished, I checked it out. The noise was reduced, but the signal was not affected. I had discovered that this may work for mono files, but stereo ones.... I'm not sure if that will work. Should I attempt it one channel at a time or not do that? When I TRY it on a stereo file, it often has no effect when I do it this way. I don't know how well it works if the file was recorded from a stereo record, but I know it doesn't work well if it's a stereo file recorded from a mono record. Anybody have anything to say or suggest I try?You could probably do with asking this question on an audiophile forum...

I'm having problems sending and recieving FILES through AOL instant messenger. I have tried doing research and I've found more of the same answer...Having to do with firewall SETTINGS whether it's thru AIM or the computer itself. I haven't had this PROBLEM before when I was using a regular PC. If this makes any difference, I now own a DELL Inspiron 6000 lap top and now I'm experiencing this problem. The other day AOL wouldn't LOAD, so I had to reinstall it. The problem kept happening but eventually it worked, but now I can't see all my old e-mail , the older installations of AOL 9.0 are still in C\Programme Files, but I get the same error message when I TRY to load them up

In short, how do I go about being able to see the old e-mails :-?

Thanks I always thought that they were stored on the AOL server and not your coputer... I hate to say it, but the best SOLUTION might be to contact AOL...

outlook and not a link clicked on I was able to CHECK the word count of my m
essage, by seleceting tools - word count.

Don't know how, but it's gone and I WANT it back.

In order to have the word count feature, you must be using Word as your email editor. If you had word count at one time but lost the feature, that's an indication you've changed a setting in Outlook. To GET back to using Word as you email editor in Outlook, go to Tools, Options, Mail Format, and check the box for "Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit e-mail messages".

Im trying to figure out how to create a list of all my albums. I have done it before in command prompt but i only had 250 or so albums and it took to long to do.. now i have over 700 and I am trying to find an easy way to create a list.

I remember there was a nother way to do it from command and make a file with the list in it but it had the dates infront of it and it was really HARD to SEE the folders... so is there anyway I can make a list of folder names only no dates ?

any progs or cmds?Is this any good :-?

This will create a file (filename) with a bare directory LISTING sorted by NAME. Or is that not what you want :-?

When I open Outlook it only downloads unread messages from my server (Comcast). Once I've opened them directly from the server it won't download them onto Outlook. What's going on? It used to download the READ and unread messages with no problem but, up until 2-3 days ago it doesn't. Is this a problem with the server? Or, Outlook? Last week I did check the box on Outlook to leave a copy of the messages on the server so that my husband and I could both download messages when we logged on separately . I don't think that would have " messed things up"?

dl65 Yes, dl65 we did resolve that issue of getting emails separately thanks to one of the newbies suggestions.
I've tried to contact Comcast through live online HELP but, once you TYPE in "problem with Outlook" it doesn't let me go on. So, I'll probably word it differently just to get online help.
My messages, unread and read, used to download without any problem when I opened Outlook and yes, they would be sent to me as unread also.
I wish Comcast would have a "leave as unread" as an email option but, they don't.

When trying to open a pdf file in outlook it says file not found. Also all documents that were stored in my documents that were adobe files were deleted. Uninstalled adobe and reinstalled, scan for virus, adware, spyware, etc..... Just cannot open any pdf file from outlook or any items from any files on COMPUTER , but when on a web site I am ABLE to view pdf files and such. Is this a security in outlook that I am overlooking or a virus???On both 6.0 and 7.0. They were uninstalled and reinstalled only to have the same problem. I dont think it an adobe problem because I can view pdf files over the web. c;/program files/adobe/acrobat 7.0/help/enu/reader/right click icon/properties/change the program it opens files with. Somehow it got changed to word even after a new install of acrobat 7.0.

Well, I finally got a different computer, and the specs are as follows:

eMachines eTower 366i
533MHz Intel Celeron
4MB ATI Rage IIc AGP
The same 52x32x52x CD-RW 16x DVD-ROM combo drive from my last computer
20GB hard drive
Windows 98SE
256MB RAM

Anyway, I installed PowerDVD and it works, but it skips. I turned on DMA and that made a huge difference, but playback still isn't flawless. Is it just because my computer's too slow? Is it a lost cause? I'd love to be able to watch DVDs on it. Thanks!

-John533MHz is a bit slow for DVD playback, although I have seen machines cope. Ensure that absolutely nothing else is running at the same time. (TRY Ctrl-Alt-Delete and end the unneeded tasks. Don't end systray or Explorer.)

If playback is still dire then you have the option either of buying a hardware MPEG decoder (I have one which I will be selling on Ebay SHORTLY!) or upgrading the whole system.What version of PowerDVD? I have 5.0. HTTP://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/require_1_ENU.html states system requirements for version 6 that clearly exceed your system. However, the system requirements stated by vendors are sometimes overstated. My processor, an Athlon XP 2200 (1.8GHz) is well above the system requirements stated on that web page; yours is considerably lower.

Note that the system requirements calls for "Graphics Card: AGP or PCI Express graphic accelerator with DirectDraw Overly Support". And, this, in my opinion, is an overstated requirement. I have two monitors and two video cards (AGP and PCI). RIGHT now, I've got PowerDVD playing a movie on the monitor connected to the PCI video card (nVidia GeForce4 MX440 with 32MB memory) and it's running flawlessly.

I think your video capacity is a major problem. I'm quite sure installing a PCI video card with at least 32MB (but preferrablly 64MB) of memory (on the card) would greatly improve the performance of your system when running PowerDVD. And, the video upgrade would improve performance for general use, as well. Now, I can't give you any assurance it would eliminate all the performance problem because you still have a processor that's below the stated system requirements.

You have plenty of system RAM for Win 98SE. Again, a video upgrade would help a lot but might not totally elminate performance issues with PowerDVD.8 meg. is the acceptable minimum for DVD playback. The processor is OK, that's not the ISSUE. I have a PIII-500 with 8 meg AGP Rage that works fine. A 16 meg PCI card would be a nice upgrade to an older system if no AGP slot is available.
