Solve : Flash Game Making?

Answer»

Does anyone know aof a free program to make flash? I tried the demo of Flash MX but im not paying $500 for it lol. So im just TRYING to find a free program that i can make games on.Unfortunately when it comes to flash games I'm not familiar with any free or open source project that allows you to edit and/or create your own flash games. There are a few basic flash creators that allow you to create animations, but when it comes to the complexity of a flash game I don't believe there are any (I could be wrong).

http://osflash.org/open_source_flash_projects

As far as creating games there are several different PROGRAMS you can use to create basic games when you're FIRST getting into game DEVELOPMENT. I'm sure MANY of the users on the forum can comment about experiences they've had with some of them.

One example of such a program and site is:

http://www.yoyogames.com/make

thanks i tried the gamemaker from yoyo. I might use it for more than a try but i dont know yet. thanx for the link tho.

Solve : Uninstall?

Answer»

So today I FINALLY tried to uninstall my Microsoft office 2007 beta.

My battery ran out mid WAY though, and now when i go to uninstall it, add/remove says that it cannot find the REQUIRED files, but it still shows up on the list.

i FOUND a program that will only remove the Office item from the add/remove list but will not remove the office files.

Is there a way to uninstall so that i get everything off my system? ThanksYou could TRY reinstalling it and then uninstalling it again.

You should also download CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar) and configure it according to this guide.thank you, such a convenient, and subsequently awesome program.

Solve : My Laptop Shortcuts Link To Printer??

Answer» http://Hello All I run XP w/SP2 on a Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop. I have used this laptop well over a year with only basic problems. The other day I went to click on a shortcut to a website I frequent; instead a page comes up asking if I want to print. Now this is very strange to me. I am usually pretty good at getting to the root of some computer ills. This is "out there in left field" so to speak. Is ANYONE up to this challenge? I had thought of inserting my XP install CD to use the repair option; is this possible? Thank you for your time. I've never heard of this, EITHER...

Why not try doing a System Restore back to a PREVIOUS time when this wasn't occuring...Hello Savior, Now, you have hit my sore spot. I should have done a system restore immediately, but I did not. Now, it is too late. The system restore goes back only a day or 2. I need to research on how to increase the system restore disk space allocation. Thanks for the suggestion.Do all of your shortcuts link to your printer or just this one link?

Why not try visiting the page again and creating another shortcut...It is only online [web] links where the shortcuts do not work; bringing up the printer. All of my computer related links work normally. [?]Try right-clicking on the shortcut and select Open With...

Select the browser you are using to view web pages...Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc., etc.

Click OK...

Post your results please...

Solve : WinRAR Problem?

Answer»

Okay, I'm trying to GET the contents of a WINRAR files onto a CD. They are a big FILE, an AUTORUN.inf file, and and icon. This CD is Disc 2 of a 3 disc program, so I need the autorun. The problem is, every time I extract the files to a file or burn them to a CD, the autorun and icon are deleted, leaving only the big file. Is there SOMETHING I can change in WinRAR to make it so that I can get the autorun.inf out of it?

Thanks in advance.

Solve : xp ..ALL GONE..HELP?

Answer»

Im not techno minded, but really need some help.
My old laptop was running slow..so invested in newie. Copied everything I needed across, and decided to wipe old one .
HERES what i did..inserted windows XP disk..started to run..then stopped.
So..i BOOTED from the cd..fine..got halfway through installing new xp and stopped.
Now i try to start up and it keeps saying hal.dll file missing.
Heres what I have at my supply...a vista upgrade cd..which allowed me to at least get to a dos prompt.
Tried entering the DETAILS from this help page for hal.dll on dos..says BOOT.ini missing.
Asking to reinstall copy of root>\system32\hal.dll. file
Where can I find this file , and how do I reinstall
I also have a windows xp cd..with my key.
Application and driver recovery dvd..borrowed.
operating system cd for windows xp..borrowed.
Any ideas?
I would like to restore it to just the basics so my son can use it.
ThanksLaptops normally ship with their own (OEM) version of Windows...is this what you tried the re-install with or with an MS XP CD ? ?Before you re-install the OS ... I would boot with Dban or kill disk and erase that HD...After you nuked your hard drive....That's when I would boot with the XP installation disk.

Google dban or kill disk for the free downloads.

Good luck

Solve : Codec Packs?

Answer»

For ages now I have seen codec programs, and when I get them I never know where to install them, so they dont seem to make any difference, for example would I install it into VLC video player? If not where?
The screenshot below is an example of the type of program I am talking about....

Also, is it even a good idea to install these things? A google search found some stuff where some people werent too crazy about them.....

[SAVING DISK space - old attachment deleted by admin]Uhh what? If you're using VLC player you have no need for codec packs since VLC uses its own internal codecs.

Codec packs can be a real MESS. Windows Essentials Codec Pack is okay because it doesn't install a lot of codecs that conflicts with each other.I use VLC when I have to, but prefer WMP but that doesnt PLAY nearly as many video FILES as VLC....That is because WMP relies on external codecs. In other words you'll need to install codecs for the formats you want to be able to play.

Solve : DVD Writing Programs?

Answer»

I just purchased a Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burner for my PC. I bought it OEM from NewEgg, so it did not come with any SOFTWARE. I am new to the whole DVD burning thing. Right now I just want to be able to burn data for backups and create movies/slideshows from my digital CAMCORDER and camera.

I have played with Windows Movie Maker 2, and I know that it is not directly able to burn to DVD, but that some software can convert the output of MM2 to DVD format.

Of course I love freeware, but would be willing to pay for an all-in-one suite (Nero, Roxio, etc), if it is worth the money. Upon searching the forums, I have stumbled on recommendations for DeepBurner for data, and DVD Flick for media.

What are some good movie making programs? I currently only have 512 MB of RAM, so that may be an issue. I would rather try before I buy to make sure that I like the way they turn out before pony up.

Is it best to diversify and GET a good movie making ONLY program rather than one that comes in a suite of burning tools, and then use something basic (free perhaps) to burn straight data?

PKWhat OS are you using?
If your using win XP or Vista then I would suggest Adobe Premiere element 3.0.
Its not a cheap program but it can do like everything you will ever want.
Plus it is able of burning.

I remember SEEING CDBurnerXP Pro mentioned around here a few times.
Do a search of the forums for it, so you can read some comments on it.

CDBurnerXP Pro website

It is free.

So what are you trying to do?

And what format are the files?

If your attempting to back up dvd movies then you will need DVD SHRINK 3.2 and ImgBurn.
Simply open DVD Shrink and click Re-Author and then drag the main movie onto the other side. It will tell you its analysing, wait tills its done then click Compression Settinsg tab and remove all audio settings and subtitles except one (ACS 5.1).

Then click burn on the toolbar and go to Quality tab. Make sure you check deep analyse and also make sure that it is creating a .ISO image.

After its done open ImgBurn and and select the .ISO and burn it to a dvd.

Done.

Solve : Problem. Games playing too fast??

Answer»

When I was playing GAMES on my computer (sims 2, rollercoaster tycoon 3) the Gameplay was really Fast. Like when you speed it up in-game, But i couldn't change it. and yes i know how to do it in game. It only affects games. The only change i hae made to my pc was that it overheated alot when playing computer hogs like the sims so i put a desktop FAN at the back of my pc. Dont know how it would affect my pc. But YEA thats my PROBLEM ANYBODY think they can help? What are your computer's specs and OS?
Have you got the latest patches for the games?Yea i have all the latest patches.

uhm.Don't know all that much about computers. But its a fairly new computer. i'll just write what it says in basic information =]
AMD athlon 64 processor
3500+
632mhz 1.00GB ram

hope that helps at all?If it starts going too fast hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete

Find the game in proccesses and then right click it. Select "choose affinity" and uncheck one of the proccessors.

Basically your computer is using both processors for the same tasks the game appears to go twice as fast. All that happens when i right click is. end processes, end processes tree and priority. Im not a multiproceser.

Solve : Long Shot- Old Gateway/Windows 98 Games??

Answer»

When I was a kid of about eleven or so, my parents bought a brand-new Gateway PC that was about a kajillion pounds, ran Windows 98, and had this GAMES package that came with it.

The specific names of these games escape me in my age (lol.), but I remember one of them was CALLED something like 'Muddled Poker', and featured royalty on the cards. Another was a snake game where you had to keep pottery lids from crashing to the ground, and another was some kind of game where you had to play with genetics and create hybrid species. There were others, but those are the ones I remember most.

I know this is an absolute long SHOT, but does anyone remember the names of these games, or better yet, where I might find them? I've done Google searches and come up empty handed everytime.

I really hope you guys can help me, those games were an enjoyable part of my pre-pubescent years!

Does anyone know of a good DUPLICATE file remover program?http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/duplicate-file-remover.html
Here a a few programs but I don't know WITCH is a good one.

Jonas I would excersize extreme caution while doing this...

Is this a HDD space issue ? ?No ACTUALLY I was going to use it on my pictures, as I have some that are the same and they are just taking up unecessary drive space.Gotcha.

Solve : outlook not sending but recieving??

Answer»

We have a tiscali connectiong at home but we have also got a vodaphone 3g usb modem. When on broad BAND send & receivce works finr. When using Voda`phone modem email will not send - it receives no problem.

we somtimes GET an error message but most of the time its corrupted

we can get a range of errors from
smtp.(some domain)
to a garbaled "search folder active"So, you have two email accounts setup in Outlook, one for tiscali and one for Voda`phone modem? Is that RIGHT? What is Voda`phone modem? Is it a wireless Internet connection? Why do you need both Voda`phone modem and tiscali?ok... so we have been told that because we are out of our boudband service that we need to get vodafones smtp settings and all of that any sugestions?

btw this HAPPENS whenever we are on any connection that is not tisali

Please answer Soybeans questions we can't help you if you don't answer our questions.

Jonas QUOTE from: benjojo on August 11, 2007, 04:18:19 AM

btw this happens whenever we are on any connection that is not tisali

Many ISPs will not allow users who aren't on their net to send emails using their smtp server. So when ever you're not on a Tiscali connection, Tiscali's smtp server refuses to send your emails.

If you want to send emails when you're on vodaphone, you'll need to find vodaphones smtp settings. You usually get this kind of information when you sign up with an ISP.And, once you get the vodaphones smtp settings, you'll need to be sure you select vodaphones as the account FROM which you're sending a message. Otherwise, Outlook will use the default account to send and, if that's tiscali, the message won't go.

Solve : MS Word printing order?

Answer»

I have a 108 page DOCUMENT that I need to turn into a booklet. I'm trying to print it 4 pages per sheet, with the pages out of order. The order I need to print the pages in is 108,1,108,1,2,107,2,107 and so on but it will only print pages 1 and 2 from that, it won't print in the order I want it to, from the example it will just print pages 1 then 2.
Any help will be great.
Thank You"I'm trying to print it 4 pages per sheet ...". Hmmm, does a page not equal a sheet? How can you print 4 pages on one sheet of paper? When you goto print there is a Zoom SECTION and it shrinks the pages and prints multiple pages on a SINGLE sheet, you can print 1 to 16 pages per sheet of paper.I just did a test with Word 2003. I opened a 53 page document, entered the page number sequence of 45,1,45,1,2,44,2,44, and then printed to a PDF document on my hard drive instead of to paper, to avoid wasting paper. It worked; it printed 4 pages to a page/sheet and in the sequence I specified. So, I don't know what your problem is there.

My print setup screen looked like this:
Just had an idea. You might install PrimoPDF and try "printing" to PDF file, just as I did. Then, you can open the PDF with Adobe Reader or another PDF reader and print the document. If this WORKS, it indicates the problem is with your printer, not Word.

PrimoPDF is freeware. Once installed, it appears in your system as a printer and you can select it as the printer when printing from Word or other applications. I wasn't the one who created the document, I'm just the one who needs to format it properly and I figured out why it was working. The page number in the document goes 1,2,3,4,2,3,4... so to get it to print properly I have to use the section number. I have the OPTION to print to PDF and I started using it after you mentioned it and it makes thing go much fast, I don't have to run to the printer after each test.
Thanks for the help soybean

Solve : Will Outlook let me customize the body of a message with a name???

Answer»

I am USING Outlook 2003 and would like to customize the body of a mail message to pull the first names from the distribution list and insert them in the greeting. Can Outlook do this? I looked into making a form but don't SEE a way of making this happen. I have to use Outlook for this because it is what my employer requires we use for email.

The purpose of this would be to send out an email to a distribution list that is personalized for each individual recipient. So if my distribution list contained emails for Tom Jones and Mary Smith I could write ONE email for both of them but outlook would AUTOMATICALLY change "Dear ______" to Dear Mary, or Dear Tom.

Thanks so much!!!

Before running defrag on C: , have you run Scandisk on it?
Any problems?

This could be a waste of time, but it can't hurt: Do you have a cable modem? or DSL modem? If so, disconnect it from the computer.

Ok guys a bit more info.No i have not run a "scan disk" before trying the defrag. I cannot do a defrag from "safe mode" (even though i would definetly prefer to do so) because on this particular computer i cannot get into safe mode. Why? Because when i try to it wants a password. I have been the sole owner and user of this computer since new (about 1998) and have NEVER input any passwords for adminisrator or user. However this computer was made expressly for me at a computer shop and they are long ago out of business. If there is a password they created it not me.Did not go the "ctl-alt delete" route when i tried to shut everything off (but i will). One of the results of my trying to eliminate interference from anything was that unintentionally (just yesterday) i completly lost AVG Free 7.5 (not even in the add remove programs) Although a file search does bring up tons of AVG files including many applications? I have today reinstalled it (AVG free 7.5) and as i write this it is scanning everything). So far it has been running for 1hour and 30 mins. Is still on "C" and has found one threat "Trojan Horse Generic 3.DSQ" . No cable or DSL yet (hopefully by the end of the month) 56k dial up.Was offline when trying defrag. Remember absolutely no problems with "D" & "E". Thanks for your assistance. truenorth
Your password scenario sounds odd. Did you follow the procedure given here for starting in Safe mode?: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtmlQuote from: truenorth on August 13, 2007, 06:40:56 PM

No i have not run a "scan disk" before trying the defrag.

Give it a try, and let us know what happens.

Interesting.... in that for about 9 years, you've never had to re-install Windows.

That's what made me think of scandisk. Thinking of something that could be different from drive to drive.

Soybean,WillyW, Progress! However i can only relate to what has happened--not why.
1.As i write this "C" drive has been running (in safe mode) since 8 am now nearly 1pm. It is at 84%.
2.As a result of the reinstall of AVG free 7.5 and running a complete scan eventually 4 "Trojans" were found and automatically deleted.
3.One trojan was in C:\Windows\Temp and the other 3 were all in C:\program files.
4.After i saw that the trojans were gone i decided to try the normal F8 at boot method of accessing "safe mode" (which is what i had been doing all along). So i did NOT do a scan disk before, nor did i do the "start.run, msconfig" either. I wanted to do exactly what i had been doing before when i got the password requirement and then go from there (as per your guidance) if it became necessary so i could see what if anything had changed.
5.F8 at boot got me into safe mode (no password). The rest is history as i assume this defrag will complete.
Yes it is indeed a rarity that an original install of an O/S could be still running after 8-9 years but such is the case on that computer. However i have a number of others with various operating systems where such has not been the case. The one in question was a REPLACEMENT for one i had stolen in a HOME robbery and originally had win98 on it and all i did was upgrade (when it became available) to SE and have not had to touch it since. I have other computers much newer and operating systems up to and including Vista (which i am reluctant to install on anything) that have given me many more problems than this one. Thus it is my favorite and the one i use the most. I know this is a terrible addmission but in fact while i regularly defrag my other computers i had NEVER done one on this computer. So it hit me that maybe it was about time. Hense this thread. Thanks guys--assistance really apprecited. This should end the thread on this post unless someone wants more info. truenorthQuote from: truenorth on August 14, 2007, 11:10:45 AM

Sounds like AVG cleaned up some dirt that was in the way.

Let alone the hard drive lasting that long.
I think that's pretty good.

Just wanted to add:
I use Win98SE too. I had troubles defragging a couple times too. It's been a while though. Vaguely, I remembered something with Scandisk.
I seem to think that a run of scandisk is built right into the first part of running defrag. It would appear that defrag was starting, then quit after a few moments. It was really scandisk that was having some SORT of problem.
That is why I suggested running scandisk alone - so you could see what it was doing.
Again - it has been a while, so I could have some details muddled.
Can't hurt to run scandisk anyway though.

Glad you got it whipped. Thanks for letting us know.

Solve : Simple Qusetion?

Does anybody know how i can make a batch file that actually does what it's supposed to do, and then stay at a command prompt/save to a log file?

I plan to add this into a logfile/display in command prompt:

netstat -b -vPerhaps this is what you're LOOKING for:

netstat -b -v >>"%userprofile%\desktop\log.txt"

Save that as a batch file and when you run it, it will post the netstat results in a text file on your desktop. Of course you can edit the code to whatever you like.doesn't appear to be working...Add the directory?

"C:\" what does >> MEAN?Quote from: shing on August 13, 2007, 01:30:24 AM

what does >> mean?
Here is an example of '>>'

If you use the command 'dir c:\' in Command Prompt, you will get a list of files.
If you use the code dir c:\ >>"%userprofile%\desktop\file.txt", you won't see the list of file names in Command Prompt but there will be a text file on the desktop called 'file' with the list of files in it.> is the DOS/NT/Unix/Linux REDIRECTION character. the output of a command or PROGRAM is redirected to a file.

Used once, it creates a new file, and destroys without warning any file of the same NAME that already exists.

Used twice, it appends to a file, if it exists. If the file does not exist, it is created the first time >> is used, and appended to thereafter.

Solve : Uninstallation of AVG not working?

Answer»

Yesterday I upgraded a PC of mine from Win98 to WIN2K. After I did that, I noticed my Antivirus AVG was not working anymore. I uninstalled it and it told me it was uninstalled, but it still appeared in the list. When I re-started the machine, and re-installed it it told me it had done so, but when I attempted to run the program, it asked me for a license number. It's the Free version, so I TRIED enteringthe License number from ANOTHER installation I was doing, but it wasn't working. So, now it's still in the list and it refuses to uninstall and refuses to INSTALL. What do I do?I would try to do another uninstall and make sure to go through by hand and delete the files and registry keys LEFT behind and then try this microsoft app found below:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

I hope this is of some helpAlso you might try uninstalling in Safe Mode.

Alan <>< Ccleaner can be of great help to remove those register keys after uninstalling.

Could someone help me? it says like outgoing server and incoming server information i need and whether its pop3 or imag or something like that. Please someone help me.

First - have you been here?
http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html

and read everything? There are good instructions there.
After you've been through all the steps there, if there is something you don't understand, please post here and be as specific as possible.

Next - some reading can be found here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_webmail_with_your_email_client
I suggest you do not concern yourself with the part there about add-ons
for now. Stick with the software available at the webmail.mozdev.org
site already mentioned. But some of the other reading there might be useful.

Next - a thread in the mozillazine forums, dedicated to the Hotmail/Yahoo extensions. It is long. Not saying that you should read the whole thing, but at least have a look at it. And know where it is for your future use. Skim through it, you might find something similar to your problems, already mentioned.

As a matter of fact, those forums are very active.
http://forums.mozillazine.org
You might like to use the search function there too. Again - you might find your problem(s) already covered.

Getting Hotmail working with Thunderbird is not hard. I can say that, because I did it.
I don't use Hotmail all that often, but in T-Bird I try to click on Get MAIL on my hotmail account occasionally, just as a matter of principle.
On the few occasions that I have used it, it works fine.
I'm using an old version of T-Bird, and the corresponding old versions of the Webmail EXTENSION. I got them from the site I directed you to above, and FOLLOWED the instructions there.

Let us know how it goes.

I hope this helps.

I should have emphasized that it is not a 3 minute job - sorry. But it is not really that hard. It is the reading of all the steps that takes the time.

I tried Google before i POSTED this, the problem is the words in the search are too common, and thus you get allot of garbage in the results.

Also, I am looking for a program that shows real time hard drive read and write mb/s, not something that shows me what is on my disk.

Solve : computer shuts down before loading the windows logging screen.?

Answer»

well on my brothers computer, he starts up his computer, GETS the list of how to start it up, you know the start up with the last KNOWN configuration, or safe mode, or safe mode with networking, etc. But when he starts up, the windows logo appears along with the loading bar, but then it goes black, and the caps lock numlock and scrolllock lights flash, and nothing happens. This happens on the last known configuration and the normal start up. The safe MODES work. What IVE done so far is start it up in safe mode, then i system RESTORED to the system checkpoint two days ago when the computer was working, but it did what it was doing before. Then i did a system restore to august 1st, but that did nothing either. Im at a loss.

Solve : How to send a message to Notification Bar (task bar)??

Answer» HI !

I have a small batch file. I WANT to SEND a NOTIFICATION message (MSN like) which appears through the Task Bar.

I NEED a standalone exe file like msgbox.exe from debrock.org/msgbox.
It is a useful program, but the message appears in the center of the screen. If this program had screen coordinates, it would be nice.

Is there a message maker program or script which I can make the message appear anywhere I want on the screen?

Solve : Checkboxes in Microsoft Word?

Answer»

I'm trying to create a form on a Word document which has both of the FOLLOWING features:
a) merged fields for name, address, etc. (from a database of clients)
b) a check list in which the user can CLICK to put an X in the check box

I can do both of the above features independently, but not together. According to the Microsoft help article (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100307481033.aspxyou) I need to protect the form in order to ACTIVATE the check BOXES, and this protection prevents the merging of the name, address, etc. fields. If the form is not protected, the check boxes don't work.

Any idea how I can achieve both features together?Check out this site....you can SUBSCRIBE to their mailing list at no charge....joining the forum you can expect a fee.

Solve : Deleting word docs?

Answer»

Hello All

Does any have any idea why my system deletes word docs after a few days? Everytime I create a word doc my computer deletes the doc after a couple of days. I don't know if there is some type of setting that will stop this from happening as I have LOST many docs. I have word 2002. THANKS for any help.
Larry Have you done a search of your hard drive for all .doc files, to verify that files are truly disappearing? Do you know how to do such a search?

Do you normally save files to the folder set as the default file location in Word?

What protections are you USING against viruses and SPYWARE? Firewall? Thanks for the reply. I searched the hard drive for documents that I created and saved on the C drive. The docs were in the C drive for a few days then gone. I did a search using the XP search tool. I save most of my files in a folder in My documents, never had a problem in the past. I am using Symantec and Webroot for protection. You mentioned the .doc file search, I am not sure on how this works. Thanks for any help.

Solve : Help Running Program from Batch File?

Answer»

im running widnows XP SP2. BTW So when i run WORLD of Warcraft, it takes alot of memory naturally, so i kill the process explorer.exe, and open a few other programs from the "New Task" in Task Manager. but the PROBLEM is, when i want to run WoW, i have to go to New Task and then browse all the way through to "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe"

so i thought i'd make an easy batch file to go through the trouble for me
Here is the code i used
Code: [Select]start "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe"
so i saved the batch file in system32 as wow.bat. all i do now is type wow in New Task, and it SHOULD run world of warcraft. but all it does is open a new cmd window that says C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe at the top.

is there a problem with my code? if so. what is wrong? Well shouldn't the code be pointing to an executable?

And I highly unrecommend stopping the explorer process for any reason, I'd be very surprised if it was the sole culprit behind less responsive gameplay..

On my computer, running Vista Ultimate the explorer.exe process runs between 0-5% and ~60MB of RAM. This is not a problem for me personally, as I have an E6600 and 2GB RAM. XP does use a considerable amount less RESOURCES than Vista.ooh my BAD i just didnt type that part in. it does point to wow.exe

this PC is just a little bit older, and when i kill explorer i get a slightly higher framerate. its just a personal choice.

but nothing is wrong with the code, assuming it points to WoW.exe, right?Try:

start "" "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe"thanks, that worked

what is the syntax that is responsible for that? The quotation marks. Why is 'start ""' different from just 'start'?Who knows....

If you go to Command Prompt and type 'start' and press Enter, you will get another command prompt window. As Carbon said, start opens up a new CMD window, and the syntax for start is:
start ["title"] path ....... etc. or something like that.

When the_1ron_lung wrote start "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe", he was just opening a new CMD window, with it's title set to "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe". By adding the "", that takes care of the title, and then "C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/WoW.exe" actually means the path. But if you want to just start another batch file, you just have to do:
start "path\to you\file\batch file.bat", without the extra ' "" '

Here's what I have in my system:

If you need to do this, your control panel may look different. This will depend on what sound card and sound software you have installed.another thing ... ask your wife what settings she uses. Solve : Scanning with Arcsoft Photostudio - Defaults?

I am using Arcsoft PHOTOSHOP Elements 5 and PhotoStudio 5.5

When I scan photos they are gigantic. I would like to be ABLE to scan a postcard sized photo so that the image produced is the size of a poscard sized photo! Instead the image is very large. I think this is why I can only scan two or three images before I receive a message TELLING me that I don't have enough SPACE and ScanGear NEEDS to close.

How can I fix this and how can I set the default output size (I am assuming this is what I have to do) so that I don't have to change settings each time I open the program?

Solve : HOW DO I PRINT MORE THAN 9 POWERPOINT SLIDES ON ONE PAGE?????

Answer»

If you have ever used microsoft POWERPOINT you'll notice when you go to print that you have the option of PRINTING a maximum of 9 slides per page.
there is also a lot of wasted space inbetween the slides too after it's printed.

what i'd really like to do is put the slides on a grid and eliminate all the wasted space.

i know how to copy and paste, but it's soooo time consuming.

is there a way i can take 40-50 slides at a time and copy them onto microsoft word (2003) from mircosoft powerpoint faster?

i hope someone knows what i'm talking about http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/HP030795601033.aspx

The maximum NUMBER of slides per page in Microsoft PowerPoint is nine. However, if you're using a PostScript printer, you may have the option of printing multiple pages on one sheet of PAPER. So, for example, if you were using a six-slides-per-page handout in PowerPoint and you then SELECTED to print two handout pages on a sheet, you would have 12 slides on that page. See the Help for your PostScript printer to find out the exact steps.

Do I need to do anything special to save all my existing emails and files in Word and Excel, along with the format I've set up for my mail in Outlook and in my Word and Excel files, when I install the 2003 version? Are there any extra steps I have to go through or will all my existing mail, files, and format be automatically transferred after the installation?

2) From the little research I've done, Office Suite 2007 is not worth the trouble, as the improvements are not especially noticeable and ther new interfaces are quite different from the previous versions and will take time to get used to. Is this true? I'm relatively happy with the 2002 version and just want to have the additional FEATURES available in the 2003 version without having to start all over again.

Thanks for your help! Are you talking about Microsoft Office?

Installing a new version of office usually just upgrades any old versions you have INSTALLED already. Most files and settings are left intact.Quote from: dwinn on December 04, 2007, 03:00:06 AM

Are you talking about a full version of Office 2003 or an upgrade version? If a full version, I feel quite sure that, if you try to install Office 2003 without first uninstalling Office 2002, the installation procedure will remove the older version of Office, but not without alerting you to that fact before proceeding.

Uninstalling Office 2002 will not delete your Excel and Word files, i.e. those files you've created and saved with .xls and .doc filename extensions. But, you would lose customized settings and macros. Macros, however, can be saved/exported and then imported into Office 2003.

For Outlook, you need to export all Outlook folders to a .pst file. After installing Office 2003, you can import that into Outlook.

Do you know of specific features in 2003 that 2002 does not have? If not, why get 2003? You might wait AWHILE longer and get 2007. After all, you'll probably be taking that step at some point, won't you?Well, I just went from a full version of 2002 to the full version of 2007 last week. All of my settings from each program were kept, and all of my mails and mail server settings were imported into the new Outlook by the installation.Quote from: quaxo on December 04, 2007, 11:42:03 AM

Great, thanks to everyone who responded! Yes, I'm talking about installing the full version of MS Office Suite 2003. I'm hesitating now between 2003 and 2007 because of the price difference and some reviews that say it's more difficult to get used to the 2007 interface, if you had worked with the previous versions. How do you like 2007 so far?Quote from: quaxo on December 04, 2007, 11:42:03 AM

I believe this is a difference between Office 2007 and earlier versions. In other words, earlier versions would remove older versions detected during installation. I can't say for sure how Office 2003 behaves during installation if an older version of Office is installed, but without some reliable reference to answer this, I'd err on the safe side and assume installing Office 2003 with Office 2002 present will normally remove Office 2002.

Oh, no question about it. The menu structure in the Office 2007 applications has been completely revised from previous versions, so the learning curve is steeper than it was for upgrading between previous versions.

I'm still wondering, "Do you know of specific features in 2003 that 2002 does not have? If not, why get 2003?"Quote from: soybean on December 04, 2007, 12:59:52 PM

Hmm, if installing 2003 will remove 2002 and necessitate the exporting and importing of Outlook folders, then I might not want to do it, as I'm not sure I know how to do it! If installing 2007 automatically takes care of that problem, that's a plus for me.

I believe the MACRO feature in Excel 2003 is more powerful than 2002. Also, when I try to download 2003 Excel programs online that contain macro and VBA features, they don't work because I have the 2002 version. Plus, it seems that 2002 is the last of the dinosaur version of Office Suite, and 2003 is when things started to get amped up. If I'm wrong, maybe I should just hang on to 2002!I see you're having some problem using quotes. Many references on how to do it can be found, such as How to manage .pst files in Outlook 2002 and in Outlook 2003

I really don't know whether that's true or not. If you have some experience that's shown that to be the case, that would seem to validate what you're saying. And, if it is true, then I would agree you have a valid reason for upgrading from 2002 to 2003. Quote from: soybean on December 04, 2007, 02:23:07 PM

Solve : Performance improving software?

Answer»

I currently use Regcure, but like the claims made by PCPitstop. What is everyones favorite "Tune up" program and why?I think of CCleaner as a good PC maintenance tool. It's a multi-purpose tool; it's a disk cleanup utility and a registry cleaner. To me they really don't improve performance all that much and in some instances actually slow things down.
The best upgrade performance wise is still ADDING RAM followed by vid card updating and high end hard drives.
No software written is going to pack the same gains in my opinion...I agree, and disagree with patio.
Surely, hardware upgrade will help. It's obvious.
I don't believe in miracle tools like "Speed Up Your PC", as for generic name for miracle tools, but regular maintenance is a must.
CCleaner is a very good example.
I actually use a set of tools, which I run once in a while. Below is a screenshot.
Don't forget about security tools being up to date, and run them once in a while, as well.

It sounds then like some of the recomendations of PCPitstop are pure BS?
I don't know about BS, but I just don't believe in miracle tools.

Is cleaning the registry not really necessary?
It is. Dead entries will slow down your computer.

Quote
Curious about the page file. Should I lrave it alone, does Windows really know best?
I have it set. I don't like M$ MESSING around my computer.

Quote
How about putting the page file in RAM on a thumb drive?
I don't think so. I even don't believe in putting it on separate partition, since with todays speedy computer, it may save you couple of miliseconds in performance.

Quote
I do use McAfee security suite that is FREE with Comcast cable.
If it works for you, and it's free, fine. Personally, I don't like it.

Quote
I do de-frag the HD frequently.
It's been under discussion for years, so who really knows. I defrag, but not frequently.

All of it....IMHO.I don't exactly what PCPitstop recommends, but cleaning the registry periodically is a good thing, assuming you're using a safe registry cleaner. CCleaner is popular partly because it's very safe. It's not the most aggressive registry cleaner but aggressive registry cleaners sometimes cause problems. You do need to be cautious about selecting and using a registry cleaner. Backing up your registry before executing the cleaning is always a good practice.

McAfee and Nortion suites are resource hogs and you'll take a performance hit with them. I suggest you explore other options for anti-virus and firewall. I'm using AVG Anti-virus, a popular choice.

As far as putting page file in RAM on a thumb drive, I'm not sure about the pros and cons of that, but I'm inclined to think you shouldn't expect a significant benefitfrom it. And, I believe most users are best off letting Windows manage the paging file.

With 1GB of RAM on your XP computer, you should have good performance for general use. Do you feel your computer is not performing like it should?

Code: [SELECT]Trying to watch Youtube videos I usually get a start and stop situation the first time through.I assume, you have on-board video, because I can't see any video card listed in your specs? If so, don't expect much.

BTW...what are your security programs?BTW...what are your security programs?

A Mcafee security suite with firewall and virus protection among some other stuff.

I also use Ad-Aware, ewido, and AOL have their own little anti spyware program.

In the beginning it was very confusing. Dell gave me free Mcafee but it expired after just one year. AOL peovides free Mcafee too. I settled on what was provided free with Comcast, it seemed ro be more complete than the AOL version, and I just don't trust AOL anyway.

I used to have Norton on my old Windows 98 machine, but got tired of always having to buy a newer subscription, free is good. I tried to run the Mcafee suite on the old Windows 98 machine, and it slowed to a crawl.Quote from: Gordon on December 01, 2007, 03:57:29 PM

I deal with large files sometimes. I Put my digital camera pictures on the computer, edit them, post some to the internetn and e-mail some to others.

I also put my 8mm videos on the computer, edit them, and post some to Youtube.

More RAM would help this more, not a registry cleaner.

Quote
Some of the interaction with the internet seems a little slow sometimes. Trying to watch Youtube videos I usually get a start and stop situation the first time through. After it's all loaded into memory (?) it will run fine.

This is more likely related to your intenet connection type and actual speed.

Quote
There are other occasions when web pages just don't want to load up. The little bar goes part way across, then just stops. I don't know much about how computers operate, but it seems that the RAM gets FULL, then it starts swaping out to the disc, is that close?

This is not a symptom that will be fixed with registry cleaning. It is more likely a problem caused by internet connection speed, AOL and McAfee.

Back to the registry cleaning issue, though, CCleaner is really all that is needed and it is free. The other programs are just voodoo.

I would switch to or at least ad Spybot. AdAware alone is not sufficient.I'm using Abexo Free Registry Cleaner which seems to be working well at a basic level of removing unecessary and closed files and providing a registry back-up on demand - anyone else had experience with this one?Quote from: ianbell on December 03, 2007, 10:18:02 PM

I haven't used Abexo Free Registry Cleaner. I MAINLY use CCleaner as a registry cleaner but also occasionally use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. I first used Eusing on 5/30/06 and have used it about an average of once every 6 weeks. I've experienced no problems with it.Just so you know i logged in to PCPitstop on a brand new build dual core setup; 1G of RAM; 2 high speed SATA HDD's and a CAD CAM vid card with 512Mg of RAM.

When it gave me a list 1/2 a page long on speedup recommendations i just laughed and never returned to their site...Yeah...it used to be pretty good site, but I don't visit them anymore, as well.

Solve : Paint program?

What do you folks recommend as the best FREE paint program - don't use one very often but I would LIKE to edit a picture or two once in a while - I would really like a program with a clone feature if any of the freeware has such a thing?http://www.gimp.org/

Totally free, good features.Photobie

Also Free. Just checking it out the last 3 days...nice.Quote from: QUAXO on December 04, 2007, 02:05:21 AM

Same thing as 'gimp' W2000 and up - any w9x PROGRAMS you know of?
Thanks, guys.Oh, in that case Photobie won't work for you either.

There's PhotoPlus 6, which is free as well, ALTHOUGH the newer PhotoPlus 8 isn't, but it's only $10.

Pixia 3.3b was the last version they made that worked in Win98 (if I remember right). It can be downloaded from here. Make sure you're getting the 3.3 version and not the new 4.1 version, which doesn't work on Windows 98.Quote from: ianbell on December 03, 2007, 10:08:05 PM

I've never heard of a clone feature in photo software. What would be the purpose of it?

Solve : VBA: OUTLOOK 2010 Prefix Subject [Secure]?

Answer»

Code: [SELECT]Sub HelloWorldMessage()
Dim msg As Outlook.MailItem
Set msg = Application.CreateItem(olMailItem)
msg.Subject = "Hello WORLD!"
msg.Display
Set msg = Nothing
End Sub
So far the best example online I have been able to find is the above one. What I want THOUGH is on the currently open email message add [Secure] into the subject. This would be email replies or forwards more then anything ... the above is only for new emails. I have SEARCHED for the right VBA trigger but am not finding anything.
