Solve : Weird Hotmail Problem - Error ox80004004?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a friend who is having a very strange problem where when connected from my house dial dial-up internet to her ISP, she can send/RECEIVE e-mail fine through the online hotmail website interface.

When she gets home and connects her telephone line into the computer and connects to the ISP, she gets connected and cant send or receive e-mail through her hotmail account and instead gets this strange error code of ox80004004

From both my house and hers, the connection is to the same ISP and same dial-up ISP phone number, with no changes.

I am totally stumped on this one, since I cant imagine what could be causing this problem, yet something is causing it

She can navigate to other websites etc with no problems, its just Hotmail for some reason. I have had her bring her system over numerous times to troubleshoot and she even spent $200 at a local computer shop to have them look it over and have her buy and install Norton Internet SECURITY. After the $200 she still has the same problem. Where it works from my home and not hers for just this one web application interface to Hotmail.

Figured I would post the message her first to see if anyone ELSE has had a similar problem with dial-up. Also going to contact Hotmail since they should be able to tell me what the error code of ox80004004 means hopefully.

Thanks,

DaveQuote

error code of ox80004004
Is there anything more to this error message?I will try to get her to grab a SCREEN shot of it, or I can check her event log for any a-ha's

Solve : Is there any way to convert PDF files to Word Document??

Answer»

Hi everyone, I'm using a ADOBE Reader 7.0, and i frequently receive PDF file, of which some need editing, i would like to find ou is there any way to convert PDF files to Word DOCUMENT? If so what can i use and how do i go about?

i would relay appreciate if there is a solution for this, for it will make my work allot easier.1. Purchase adobe ACROBAT
2. use a freeware utility like http://www.pdf995.com/

D.
When you open the file in adobe acrobat go to file save as text then save the file where you want. The file will be in .txt. Right click the txt file and click properties. Choose what program you want the file to open up to then edit the file.Quote from: hardradio on November 20, 2007, 11:45:28 AM

1. Purchase adobe acrobat
2. use a freeware utility like http://www.pdf995.com/

pdf995 will not convert PDF to a Word doc but pdfEdit995 will. I believe it's also free. Both pdf995 and pdf995edit will display a sponsor page in your web browser each time you run the software. If you would prefer not to see sponsor pages, you may upgrade by obtaining a key at any time for $9.95. I have had success simply copying and pasting text into Word from PDF files. I haven't tried pictures though.Eh, the copy and paste method doesn't work well at all if the PDF document has, say, 3 columns of text on the page. The problem is that the columns are not retained when copying into Word and, as a result, the text from the columns becomes intermixed when copied to Word.Saving as TXT will dump almost all formatting and pictures etc, it will become raw ascii looking. Its better to save as RTF ( Rich Text ) to keep more formatting ALTHOUGH you will still lose formatting and pictures etc.

You should be able to edit through latest Adobe Acrobat Professional Edition unless the author of the PDF file has selected protection on it. What is the need to convert to Word when in Adobe you can edit the PDF as long as not protected?

DaveThat may all be true, but the original post gave no indication he has Adobe Acrobat. He only has Adobe Reader and is seeking a way to edit the files, most likely without the cost of purchasing the pricey Adobe Acrobat.Hey everyone, sorry for the late reply, and i realy appreciate for all the reply and help. like i said i'm using Adobe reader, and i dont have Adobe Acrobat.
But i will try to get it, if that is what is recomended then i will use that, maybe i just need the steps on how i can do the editing in Adobe Acrobat.

I will try to us Adobe Acrobat on document that i dont want to lose the formatings, but on the other one i can use the other sugested options, like saving it at RTF.

But can someone give me the steps on how i can go about doing the editing in Adobe Acrobat? Thanks for the help. Are you ready to spend about $300? That appears to be about the minimum for Acrobat; that would be Acrobat 8 Standard. For Acrobat 8.0 Professional, you'll PAY about $450. How's that sound to ya?

Price quotes come from compusa.com, right here. You might take a look at OpenOffice to see if it can read .pdf I know it can write them, and it's free.

A copy of Wordperfect x3 may be helpful for several reasons (and can be had for $30) but this is one:

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Section/Display&sid=1047024315119&gid=1047024331836&cid=1047026187940

Google is also helpful:

http://digital-vector-maps.com/tutorial-import-pdf-into-powerpoint.aspx

But the only guaranteed solution is to use Adobe's patented products, for now.
Set up a blank word doc. Min. same.
Bring up pdf file. If columized you must mark 1 colum at a time and right click copy. If in regular letter format mark and right click copy whole thing.
Bring up word doc and right click paste. Go back for each colum as nessisary.

That's the problem. Adobe Reader won't let you mark 1 column at a time.

Solve : Uninstalling help?

Answer»

I've been having some trouble with a video game on my computer so I went to reinstall it but I can't seem to uninstall the game in the usual way. I go to Add or Remove Programs and when I hit the Change/Remove button it says that the game cannot be uninstalled until the expansion packs have been uninstalled, however all the expansion pack are uninstalled. When I put the CD in nothing HAPPENS and it refuses to work saying that the files have been moved or corrupted. Is there an alternate way to uninstall or remove this game? My OS is Windows XP and the offending game is The Sims 2. Also, I don't know if it matters but when I was done uninstalling the expansion packs the files were still on my computer and I had to delete them. I also tried system restore but that didn't help.

Thanks to anyone who can help in advance.Welcome aboard

There is a good chance, it was your mistake. Those files MAY be needed by original game uninstaller. It can't find them, and it complains.
Try to install game one more time, like nothing happened, THEN uninstall expansion pack, first (don't delete any files yourself), and the game, next.Quote
Try to install game one more time, like nothing happened, THEN uninstall expansion pack, first (don't delete any files yourself), and the game, next.

I've tried that. It was probably my fifth time trying to uninstall the game before I NOTICED that the files were still there, and that's when I deleted them. Though your right, it is my fault that the game is messed up because my problems began when I accidentally moved some files, but when I went to move them back it wouldn't work.

Also what do you mean by "try to install game one more time"? Part of my problem is that I can't do that.

Sorry if I was unclear before, I appreciate the help.Quote

Why?
Forget about game's leftovers. Start installing your game like it doesn't exist on your computer. If installation is successful, uninstall it in proper way.Quote
Start installing your game like it doesn't exist on your computer.

I tried that. For me to install the game like it doesn't already exist would be to put the CD in and wait for the autostart. Now in this case the autostart doesn't begin so I go into my computer and click The Sims 2 icon in the E: drive slot. (on my computer the CD ROMs are called E: and F:) After I do this I receive and error message that says "Unable to locate required file or required file is corrupted."Quote
and click The Sims 2 icon in the E
This is most likely for starting a game. You need to find a file called "setup.exe", and double click on it to start installation.I just tried that and I'm still receiving the same error message. HOWEVER, I did find a file that called 'eauninstall" which FINALLY did it! Thanks for your help! Now I can finally play my game, excuse me while I go do a dance of joy!Good JOB!!!

Solve : No sound with Videos?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satilite LAPTOP and whenever I go to watch music videos from yahoo or anything like that. I cant get sound. But yet if I PUT in a movie or something then i do have sound. And when I play my music from Media Player i have sound. I looked in my device manager and everything is working properly.

Any ideas?

thnxWhat Windows version? What browser? Did you try another browser?Media Center Edition. I use IE7. It worked up until about a month AGO. I cant get sound with any browser or media player on videos. On my music files ...i can though. OddWindows XP, maybe?
Are you current with Windows updates?XP, yes. and yes. I have the latest updates. Maybe I dont have up to date shockwave player or something. The best way to eliminate some options, is to install Firefox, and see if same thing happens.I do have Firefox. But the not all of the problems lie within Internet Browsers. I cannot get my videos to play sound with Windows Media Player or WinDVD unless its running off of a DVD or USB or something. Oh, so if you have video downloaded to your HD, it won't play sound, right?

Try downloading these CODECS:

Damage to the REFLECTIVE coating would cause the errors posted.

Suggest you Google for Packard BELL, out of the 1720k hits there might be one with a solution to your problem. Also, EBay might be a source of the master disks.

However, below is an extract from this link.

"Device Error Code 7696 Dos Error Code 11

This came up when remastering a Club 40 during the "Copying files" phase. This is a problem with the some of the original Master CDs, and Boot Floppy Diskettes. To resolve this problem order the following replacement media:

* 6733860201 - Master CD1
* 6733870201 - Master CD2"

I had English XP installed over or instead of the Spanish version (paid some spiv to do it).
Now I want to restore to the original Spanish system.
I have the 3 master boot discs (no FLOPPY)
when I try to reboot with disc 1 after a while of installing stuff I get a red? screen which tells me
Invalid COMMAND.COM
Enter correct name of command interpreter (eg, C:\command.com)

Also on the screen if it helps;

Can anyone help or knows what to do or point me in the right direction please

RegardsYou are logged in to the recovery partition on that laptop HDD...
The info on the screen is telling you what is on that partition...a Ghost image of the original install on the laptop which was Win98.

Type C: and hit Enter
Then type dir /p and hit enter...the /p command LETS you scroll down by using the spacebar. This will tell you what's on the partition that XP was installed onto.

76.1 Gig HD (18.8 Gig Free Space); 1.5 Gig RAM

Office 2002 for Students and Teachers will current updates.

My outlook stopped functioning. It attempted to OPEN and then showed the message that “it was closed improperly and that the Personal Folder was being checked” (a CHECKING process with progress bar stared and completed) then the archive file was checked. It then opened briefly and then closed.
Repeated attempts were the same. Many re-boots didn’t help and then I also tried starting in Safe Mode. Also, did not help. I ran the MS Office FIX and repair, on Excel, because I couldn’t open Outlook to run it on it, hoping it would correct any office file error. It completed successfully, however, w/o fixing the problem.

Your advice would very much appreciated.

Solve : Trouble Playing music files on vista.?

Answer»

Running Windows Vista:

Recently, ITUNES stopped playing my library. When I click to PLAY, it literally does nothing. INITIALLY believing that the problem lied within the itunes program, I followed all of the suggested directions provided by Apple on the support website, including several updates, plug-in alterations, and re-installations. Of course, this still did not solve my problem. A similar error occurred when I tried listening to my music through windows media PLAYER. This time a message popped up that read:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

Both of these programs worked perfectly before, and I feel that these problems are related.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have some advanced knowledge of computers, and this makes this even more frustrating for me. Have you recently installed AIM6?

Any M$ documents will open in OpenOffice. From Microsoft: You receive a "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002)" error message when you start an Office 2003 program on a Windows XP Professional-based computer. Apparently, this article was WRITTEN before SP2 for Win XP was released, since it advises reinstalling Windows XP SP1a. That would make me wonder whether you substitute SP2 for SP1a; in other words, reinstall SP2.

Are you running Win XP with SP2 now?

Another word processor option, if you can't get Office working, is AbiWord. It will read Word documents. After the MSOffice 2003 install I was running SP2 with XP, then I downloaded SP3, still got the same error msg. Thanks for the tips re. word processors, OpenOffice looks pretty good.

Solve : Need TV tuner software?

Answer»

I have searched the web, and tried many different TV tuning utils on this old TV tuner card i have, but i have yet to find one that works with it.

I do not know anything about the card other than the fact that it is some Conexant card with the BT848 (brooktree) chipset, and some phillips tuner with a cable in/out, and a composite/s-video in, the composite and s-video work, so i know that either the tuner its self is bad, or the software i am using is not compatible, i tested the composite and S-video with this cheap durabrand dvd player that was laying in the living room, and, to prevent someone ASKING what i am SURE would've been the first question, yes, the cable is connected to the cable in jack, and it is functional, cable signal is crystal clear with two TV's. i have tried several, one being ChrisTV, i do not REMEMBER the half dozen others i have tested, but, post any you can find that may work with the BT848 chipset and that can actually tune channels rather than just view the static of channel 1.

EDIT: the tuner is from '96, if it helps, i pulled it out of an old gateway, i think it was a P5-266 or something, i know it was PX-266, X being the unknown number. How about this source? Did you try them? See WDM Video Capture Driver for Bt848 / Bt849 / Bt878 & Bt879 Chipsets.

BTW, Dead_Reckon, your avatar is a whopping 80 times larger file than necessary. Let's do the world a favor and tame that 198309 bytes monster. Here's an optimized edition (attached), weighing in at 2,451 bytes; please use it.

Thanks, but, i've tried those drivers, its the only way i could get it to install, still wont work though. BTW, i mis-linked the avatar, i have a smaller one in my photobucket i NEED to link it too (if i can find it).Is a new card an option. Looks like you may need to just write-off that old card you have. Here's what newegg.com has to offer: TV card.

Regarding the avatar, why hunt for it in your photobucket account? Just take the one I attached and use it; right click on it, save it to your hard drive, then upload it to photobucket. The attachment didnt show up earlier, so i didnt bother. needed a different avatar anyway. but i will save the CSS one for later use. anyway, i was considering a newer card, don't have the money at the moment, all my money is being focused into my new inspiron laptop i'm gonna order monday, $60/m, pretty pricey. PM me if you want the specs of it. anyway, this is the TV tuner i was considering because of its relatively low price, and common chipset:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815122005

i have a couple old Leadtek winfast video cards that are good for there time, and i'm only expecting a minimal quality out of the card. Plus i can turn my computer on/off with that remote, which helps, because i am uber lazy at times.

Solve : In MS Paint, my paint window (with all of the selections) has disappeared.?

Answer»

My four year old somehow made the frame around my MS Paint window disappear (Including the tools buttons and sliders) and I can't FIGURE out how to bring it back. Anyone have any ideas?Try this. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and click on the button on the left side of the panel, titled Add/Remove Windows Components. Select Accessories and Utilities, and click on Details (button). Select Accessories and click on Details. Uncheck Paint and click OK. Close these panels, going back to Control Panel. Then, reverse the procedure, adding Paint back to your system.

Did that work?Quote from: bioed on November 03, 2007, 09:09:45 PM

I don't know if Paint has changed much - using Win98 here - , but attached is a screen capture of Paint here.

If the three CHECK marks shown are un-checked, it causes Paint to look much like you've described.

Are they On or Off in yours?

[getting disk space - attachment deleted by admin]Thank you to both of you! We appreciate your suggestions. As he read them, an idea that was related, but not exactly suggested came to my husband. We checked Toolbox under View and the small box appeared. He clicked on the blue band at the top and drug it past the screen on the left side. The window reappeared as it should have been. He remarked that he didn't know why it didn't occur to him before since you can switch the location of the task bar in a similar way.

Thanks for taking the time to help!!Quote from: bioed on November 10, 2007, 08:39:51 PM

Solve : PFS First Choice installation with Windows 98 and XP?

Answer»

PFS First Choice was a very popular DOS based program back in the 80's and 90's. I still use it. It is much like Microsoft OFFICE in that it has separate 'modules' for word processing, databases, spreadsheets. I know many people are still using it and I also know many people have run into a BRICK wall when trying to use it with XP. I have the solution.

While First Choice will run just fine under Windows 98, when you try to install it in XP it will install and run, but it will be in a small window that cannot be maximized. I have heard that some USERS of early vcersions of XP could not get it to run at all.

I discovered that you can make th program expand to full screen mode by simply hitting "ALT" and "ENTER" key simultaneously.

If there seems to be a problem getting it to run at all, I would suggest RUNNING the Windows XP "Compatibility Wizard" and it should run just fine. You sure are having ALOT of fun with the Compatibility Wizard...

Someone still using PFS First Choice!! MS-Dos did not die it just came back from holiday

Solve : Corel Print House and Windows XP?

Answer»

I just upgraded to Windows XP from 98SE and found that my favorite graphics program, Corel Print House (and Photohouse) would not run properly under XP.
During installation, I GOT an error message saying to contact Corel to OBTAIN new drivers.

I called Corel and the idiots refused at first to even ADMIT that they had ever sold
the program. I finally got hold of a supervisor in "support" (HA !) to admit that while, yes, they did MAKE the program they were no longer supporting it in ANY way shape or form. Thanks Corel! (Guess what the chances of my ever buying ANY Corel program now are?)

Well, I did a LITTLE experimenting and found that by running the Windows XP "Compatibility Wizard", I could get that program up and running just fine !!!

Hope this helps someone who likes the program as much as I do.Glad you got it running...and SHAME on Corel.Nice job

Solve : windows xp pro-oem W/SP2?

Answer»

Tiger direct has windows xp pro-oem w/sp2 for sale for something like $139.00 . It sounds like a good deal but what does the oem stand for and why no upgrades from MSOEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer.

That simply means that it is the version sold to equitment manufacturers like Dell, HP, ETC.

So OEM is usually the "preinstalled" version of windows that you get when you buy a new computer with OS already included.

And the thing about OEMs, the last time I CHECKED, was that it comes with no technical support from microsoft and OEM's might be less expensive than RETAIL because OEM's might not be PACKAGED with the same stuff that retails COME with, like the pretty boxes and things like that.

However, if you get OEM windows xp and retail windows xp, you will see absolutely no difference in the main product. So windows is still windows guaranteed. Thanks for explaining this to me .Your Welcome.

But if you are wondering, you can still get all the updates that microsoft gives you from the windows update. That has nothing to do with OEM.

Solve : Outlook Express wondow size when viewing new message?

Answer»

Something strange has happened to my Outlook Express program - after a few YEARS of normal operation it now has a strange way of showing messages and I can't return it to default.

When I click on a message to view its contents, the new wondow showing the contents is only small (about 1/4 the size of a normal one) and can't really be read sensibly, so the first thing I ALWAYS have to do is maximise it to read.

I suspect someone has accidentally pressed some secret key combination (CTRL/SHIFT/something) that has changed its default setup, and it's REALLY IRRITATING.

I'm using Outlook Express 6.00 on a Windows XP Home system. Any suggestions for a solution would be appreciated.
Try this.
Hover your mouse over new message window border/corner, until it changes to double arrow. Click, hold, and DRAG borders to the size, you like.
Hold CTRL key, and close that window. Reopen. Is it in right size now?
Ultimately, right click on OE icon, go Properties>Shortcut tab
At Shortcut key choose "Maximized" from drop-down menu.Thank you VERY much. That worked fine and things are back to normal!!
You're welcome
Which way did you go?

"Program:C\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero Vision\ NeroVision.exe"

I've contacted Nero and their advice was to remove Nero 7 from the computer and reinstall, which was done a number of times with no success

What is the original movie file extension?Quote from: Broni

What is the original movie file extension?

Where would i find this out?? Sorry for my ignorance Its downloaded from...5mins forfighting.com... if thats any help. You downloaded some movie to known to you location on your computer. Using Windows Explorer, go to that location.
Your file will look like this:
somemovie.xxx
I'd like to know what you have in "xxx" place.somemovie.x264.ENG-CIF

does that sound like what you need??

It must be some fake file.
File extension (.xxx) can be only THREE letters, or less.
I'd just get rid of it.

Make sure, that after downloading any file form less TRUSTED source, you scan it with your antivirus program, before you proceed with any other action!Once again...you get what you pay for.Quote from: Broni on November 12, 2007, 05:43:39 PM

That may be the case, but when the file extension is "Xvid" it works fine

and X264 used to work fine

I don't know if it makes any DIFFERENCE, but i'm downloading NHL hockey games, not movies Well i cannot answer that question...but since Major League Baseball just started using DRM and scrambling their online feeds perhaps the NHL has started to do the same...Quote
when the file extension is "Xvid" it works fine
Xvid is NOT a file extension.
Xvid is a VIDEO encoding and decoding (playback) codec, similar to DivX codec.
That movie coded with Xvid must have some video type file extension, like ".avi" for instance.
If it doesn't, it won't play.

Let's say, I downloaded "Letters from Iwo Jima" movie.
Downloaded file will look like this:

Letters.From.Iwo Jima.DVDRip.XviD-FxM.avi

Where Xvid is codec type, and avi is file extension (indicating file type).OK, sorry, my mistake, i'm living up to my usrename

I've checked and they are either .avi or .mp4

Thanks again for your help In that case, they should be burnable, but you have to remember, that sometimes downloaded file is corrupted (happened to me number of times).
As for ".avi" files, you can check them before burning, if they are not corrupted.
Get DivFix: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divfix.html
After installation, click on "Add files" button to add a movie for checking, then click on "Check Errors" button.Awesome, THANK you very much

I'll try that for sure

Thanks again for your time. You're welcome

Solve : Thunderbird issue w/ Webmail Extension?

Answer»

I'm running the latest version for the Windows XP SP2 version of Thunderbird. I also have the latest updates for the extensions mentioned.

I've been running TB with three email addresses for a while now. All of a sudden, however, I am having difficulty with my Hotmail email:

In spite of my attempts, I cannot GET mail to SEND or receive through Hotmail. All my settings are where they should be; I didn't touch them. I've looked online, and I've tried setting Hotmail to WebDav, and both the old and new Hotmail Live settings. Nothing is changing it. I can access Hotmail through a browser, but it's impossible to do anything with TB.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Have you installed the Hotmail extension for Webmail?Yes, I have, and it's fully up to date.Hmmm, that's strange. I can't receive e-mail either.Right. As I said, though, my other Email addresses work just fine. If we exclude Hotmail being down, which happens, then you have to double check your Hotmail Server Settings.
I had similar problems with Gmail, and what worked for me was this:
- INCOMING mail port: 995, security set to SSL
- outgoing mail port: 587, security set to TLSThat doesn't solve it, I'm afraid.

I've reset the ports to 110 and 25, and security at None. It may be that the server is having trouble, but I don't think that's the case, because I can access my email with the browser; it's just TB giving me trouble.I don't think, web based email will work in Thunderbird with security set to NONE.Quote

Yes.
MS is changing things at Hotmail.
Every time they do this, the Webmail developer has to play catch up. He waits until his hotmail accounts fail, then checks logs, etc., figures out what he needs to change in the extensions, fixes them, and releases updates.

What is even stranger appearing, is when you have multiple hotmail accounts, and only one fails, and the rest keep working fine.
It means that the accounts are on different servers and MS just hasn't gotten around to them all yet. The others would EVENTUALLY fail too.
This is what happened to me over the last few days.

I've been looking through the forums here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39&sid=5d6d9eba214adf6c27a3f07f0b2d997a
and I'm giving you the condensed version.
If you'd like to search around there, you can find the exact posts on it.

I did download and play with his betas.
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/files
It worked.
However.....

Today, using Thunderbird->Tools->Add-ons->Find Updates , I see that he has released new versions ( not betas ) .
I've just let it update, and am experimenting now.

If you have problems with the built-in update function ( there were some snags with it earlier today ) , you can manually grab the .xpi files from
http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html
Check the version numbers there vs. what you have currently in use.
Bet ya yours are not up to date. Dilbert, the latest updates for Webmail will fix this problem.Just received the updates. Hotmail's working great now. Thanks much, guys. Nice

If you press F1, does the COMPUTER then successfully bootup?GENERALLY, you can just go into and out of the BIOS and default settings will work. If they don't, adjust them to suit your NEEDS and then you'll be able to boot from the CD (remember to make the CD your first boot device). This happens with some new PC's on the first time you boot them.

I am usin firefox and when they download they come up in the download box but only as a white window with the blue bar across the top not the icon which I am downloading (which used to happen).

Once they download I try to run them to install the program and have received a number of error messages including ''incorrect parameter'' ''only part of the readprocessmemory...'' and ''the application is not win32''

What is missing which allows the installation to take place or how can I fix this?

Basically ran out of memory, was full of music, games and general RUBBISH I didn't use any more. Sound had disappeared and was running slowly so decided to start again.Did you do a System Restore to an earlier date or an OEM restore with the laptop CD ? ?
How much free space is on that hard drive ? ?No cd just a complete system restore from the laptop, and not to a prior date. I have 23.5GB of free space before it was down to 2GB that is why I decided restore to factory settings without saving any data.Letting a HDD get below 10% free space will always cause problems because it struggles so hard to find data and drives actually use certain empty space to keep things running...

Are you saying you restored from a partition on the laptop ? ?
I'm confused so bear with me...

The messages you are getting sound like driver issues combined with operating system woes as well.

Not to be a pain but let us know exactly how you performed the restore and double check in the meantime if you have a CD that would have come with the laptop that's labelled Driver CD...

Actually list all the CD's you have from the laptop and what they are labelled as.I received no CD's with the laptop, when I started the laptop I F11ed and completed a full system restore, as windows and the hardware such as cd writer, DVD player and such are all pre-installed on the laptop.

Basically I have returned the computer to its original state from a built in restore not a cd although I guess this would do the same job.

I'm just not sure why the error messages pop up whenever I download authentic software from the internet to install on my laptop as I did before with no problems, I guess it could be something to do with the installer or a drive as after searching some error messages they seem to come up normally when trying to install from a CD although I am not doing this.Gotcha...and thanx for clairifying that...
Travel Here and run this utility and see if things improve.
If not let us know ...there are a few other things we can try.

Solve : Changing settings in Vista MS Paint OR downloading an older version of Paint?

Answer»

I have two problems concerning MS Paint.

The FIRST concerns auto-resizing when pasting. In older versions of Paint (2000 at least), whenever I pasted something from my clipboard that was larger than the current image's dimensions, I would get a prompt asking to ENLARGE the image to FIT the pasted object. This was useful when printscreening in ORDER to capture a small area (especially with two monitors). In Vista's Paint, however, the image is automatically resized and I have to tediously shrink down the image again.

The second problem is the text. In the 2000 Paint, the letters of all fonts would be monochrome, allowing easy recolouring and filling. On Vista, the letters have a grey/blended outline.

So my question is:

a) Is there a way to change either of these settings?

and b) If not, how would I go about getting an older version of MS Paint? Is it available online for free?I don't know whether you could INSTALL an older version of Paint, but I doubt it. You might try this alternative: Paint.net

Hi I'm having trouble with my 'Volume Control' - I still have the icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar and it says its open in the normal taskbar but when i click it, it doesnt open properly. Same if i go through, Start > Access. > Ent. > Vol Control.

cheersDoes your system use onboard audio or an add-on sound card? Open Device Manager and expand the SECTION of Sound, video and game controllers. What's the exact title of your PCI Audio Device? If you double-click on it, does the Properties panel say it's working properly?I think it's onboard audio as it's a laptop.

The sound still works, but i can only adjust the volume up or down with my laptop controls. RATHER than all the other bits.

What do you mean? It doesn't even show Sound, video and game controllers?Device manager shows:

Try this. Go to Start, Run, and TYPE dxdiag in the box. After the DirectX Diagnostic Tool has finished launching, select the Sound tab. What does it show under Device, mainly, the NAME there? Likewise, what's the name and version shown under Drivers?
Said no problems found.

versionL: 5.10.4995.0001Before this problem started, what was the normal behavior when opening the sound control panel from the icon in your system tray (the bottom right corner icons)? If I click my icon (DESKTOP PC running Win XP), it just opens a control panel. I cannot minimize that to the taskbar; it just closes back to the icon in the system tray. Did your system normally allow putting a button on the taskbar for your sound control panel?

You might visit the website of your computer manufacturer and search for the sound driver for your computer. Download it and reinstall it. I found a site which might have the driver for your computer but I can't be sure. It's at http://list.driverguide.com/list/company1690/

I may not able to help further with this. If anyone else has ideas, please chime in.It's not in the taskbar, the bit on the bottom right by the clock. in the original pic, its the icon to the right of the msn icon.

It used to open a volume control thing, it acts like its open but its hidden somewhere.

Im 99% sure its nothing to do with the drivers. I can still hear sound, the volume control box doesnt openQuote from: Jimmy_el_Shoe on November 16, 2007, 01:50:04 PM
It's not in the taskbar,
Yes, it is. From your image:
Sorry I don't know the right terminology.

Solve : MS Office Word 2007 multiple problems after update?

Answer»

Please, please someone help me!

On Tuesday, 11/13/07, I was deeply engrossed in a paper I was editing—everything was going well and I was really appreciating Word 2007—when all of a sudden my system started shutting down. Long story short: apparently MS Automatic Update decided to reboot my computer. If there was any warning beforehand, I didn’t see it—like I said, I was deeply engrossed in this paper I had been working on for two hours.

When my system came back up, the paper I was working on wouldn’t reopen, nor would the automatically saved copy. I got “file corrupted-cannot open” error messages on both until I gave up and deleted both of them thinking I would get another copy from the email I had originally received it in and start over. Didn’t work. When I attempted to open ATTACHED file (in email) Word would open a blank page. Tried this several times with the same result. Never was able to re-access that paper.
But then, things got worse:

1. I lost the ability to highlight text or to have any other interaction within a document other than typing letters or deleting by backspacing in a new document. If I open a previous document, I cannot access it at all. I cannot move the cursor or really do anything else. The mouse (either the cordless or the touchpad) has no effect within a document, although it works normally within the ribbons and menus. After running diagnostics and repair and multiple reboots, I am now able to use these functions within a document in safe MODE.

2.Whenever I attempt to exit from Word, in whichever method, I get the message “Microsoft Office Word has stopped working, Microsoft is searching for a solution to the problem” followed by “Microsoft Office Word is restarting.” After it restarts and I try to re-exit it goes to “Microsoft Office Word has stopped working, a problem caused the program to stop working CORRECTLY. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available” and it offers a “Close Program” button that works. Not a problem in safe mode.

3.In the course of trying to troubleshoot problem number 2, I was directed to go to Word Options, which I did and discovered that I could not access the options with either my mouse or keyboard. I could not highlight to click on them. In the safe mode, I was able to highlight some of them (Customize, Add-ins and Resources) with the arrow keys, but not the rest.

I sure hope someone can help me. I have spent many hours over the past two days trying to help myself and have not been successful.

I have opted out of Automatic Update. From now on Windows will have to ask me before downloading or installing updates. Too late to save myself this hassle though

HP Pavilion dv9000t laptop
Intel Core 2 CPU 2.00 Ghz
RAM: 2046
200 Gig HD
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
(I have the Windows Vista CD that came with the computer. Windows was preinstalled.)
MS Office Home and Student 2007 (Trial version was preinstalled. I have the CD that I bought separately and used the key from)
Norton Internet Security 2007
SnagIt

Logitech SetPoint for cordless mouse

Microsoft update always create a system restore point before installing updates. So try using system restore with the system restore point that says "Install Windows Update" or something similar.

See if that fixes your problem. And I would NOT install every single update microsoft provides, as some may be updates for software you don't use. But I would install all the important updates.elxr06,

Thanks for your reply. I did try restoring to pre-update restore points. No change. But please keep thinking and thank you, again.

PerelandraUpdate:

Day 3:

I checked this site and another I posted on to see if anyone had an answer for me. Nothing helpful. One person had a shared experience. Another person made a suggestion (appreciated) that I had already tried.

Feeling somewhat despairing, I opened Word for the gazillionth time since this all started and Lo…I felt like the shoemaker the MORNING after the elves made all the shoes! The cursor worked, I was able to type a word and highlight it, I went to Word Options and was able to access all the options, I was able to open the corrupted and deleted paper I had been working on, on Terrible Tuesday, which I hadn’t seen since my computer shut down under my hands that day, (Of course, the paper was due on Tuesday so I don’t need this copy anymore. Thanks, Microsoft.) and Word shuts down perfectly, without a hitch. As a matter of fact, the program feels faster and more solid than before The Great Terrible Tuesday Disaster.

My Reliability and Performance Monitor lists a huge number of downloads and updates for both Tues. 11/13 and Wed. 11/14. It also notes that WINWORD.EXE “stopped working” on both days.
I should also mention that during the course of all this, my sound button developed a red X and told me that no sound device was attached. Apparently a driver download failed. I had to go to the Device Manager and roll back the driver. That didn’t affect the Word problems, though.

Thanks to anyone who read my previous post and considered my problem.

I really have no idea how the program repaired itself. I have turned off Automatic Updates and set it so that it has to ask me before downloading or installing updates. The program was still in the condition described in my first post when I put the computer to sleep last night.

I can only say that I’m very grateful that I put off messing with the registry until today.

Thanks, again all.
Well, if you do have microsoft 2007 installation disks, you can try reinstalling microsoft 2007.

I've developed a very useful habit over the years. When in a document, every few minutes...I'm talking every few minutes, like within 3 or less I do the Crtl + S keyboard command. That way if your computer restarts, locks up, whatever, you have everything saved up to the last 3 minutes of work. Saves a AWFUL lot of headache.

Alan <>< Same here, Alan. I usually click on the Save button instead of using Crtl + S, but it's the same thing. Yep, it sure saves a lot of headaches. To soybean and ale52--

Of course I was saving.

I realize my posts were long, but it would be a good idea to read them before commenting, or if that is too tedious, find a shorter one to comment on.

Again, saving was not the problem. Both my saved and the auto-saved documents were corrupted...until they weren't--which was the most interesting part.

Same to you, elxr06. Although I appreciated your attempts to help--you should read first, THEN
comment. You suggested I re-install after I had posted to say that ALL OF THE PROBLEMS SPONTANEOUSLY REPAIRED THEMSELVES.

Well, if you were saving, I don't see that stated in your original post, which I did read. When you said, "I was deeply engrossed in this paper I had been working on for two hours", that seems to indicate you had worked for two hours without saving. I see no comments in your posts to indicate you were saving on a frequent basis.I'm sure that tone of suggestions in your last Post will win lots of people over to helping.

Please except my most abject apologies. I had not realized that my frustration was so out of line.

Thank you all for all your help.

Solve : Active X?

Answer»

In Add Remove Programs I have among others:

Adobe Flash Player 9 ACTIVE X
Adobe Atmosphere Player for Acrobat and Adobe Reader
Adobe Flash Player 9 Active X
Adobe Reader 7.0

Do i need all of these? Is one FIGHTING the other? What do you recommend? The issue that I always seem to have is that I have something running in the background. I hve had your HELP and my computer was quiet for about a week. After that week I think one of the Active x programs loaded with a game and I'm not sure how I should take care of it without messing things up. - You need Adobe Flash Player. I don't know why you have TWO instances of it, so I'd uninstall BOTH, and install fresh version: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

- Most likely, you don't need Adobe Atmosphere Player:
Quote

Adobe Atmosphere Player, an embedded plug-in for web browsers and documents, gives users the ability to view 3-D environments created in Adobe Atmosphere.
Quote
Adobe Atmosphere (abbreviated Atmo) is a 3D computer graphics creation product originally developed by Attitude Software. In November 1999, Adobe Systems purchased the technology. Adobe released its last version of Atmosphere, version 1.0 build 216, in February 2004, then discontinued the software in December 2004. The product spent the majority of its lifetime in beta testing.

- Adobe Reader 7.0 is a real resource hog. I'd uninstall it, and get FoxIt: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.phpAdobe Flash Player will not DELETE in Add/Remove ProgramsYou have two listings for Flash Player. Neither of them can be uninstalled? This is a known issue...

Travel Here for the fix. Thanks PATIO...I couldn't find that link.

BTW, I love bullsh*t like this:
Quote
Due to recent enhancements to the Adobe Flash Player installers, you can now remove the player only by using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller.
I believe they borrowed the term enhancements from Redmond...

Where is this log from? When does that error happen?Thats a bug report from within Limewire.try frostwire. see if that problem COMES up. frostwire is built on similar if NOT exactly same code as limewire.

But I find it gives you the turbo speed that only pro version of limewire gives you.theirs also citrixwire.. soulseek works best thoughOr torrents. They're always helpful. i.e. uTorrent (and less viruses and crap)

-StephenIf you use P2P software or torrents, be certain that you are NOT sharing any files or that you are careful if you do want to share files.

Limewire (and similar programs) and torrents I think automatically shares files unless you change settings. And it is illegal to be sharing files that way and you don't want to get into trouble P2P will automatically share your files, torrents however will only share your files if you specifically create a torrent and tracker for them, and send someone the torrent file. Also, when a download has finished, unless you click stop, it will 'seed' that download, which is basically sharing it with somebody. But of course, if it's a LEGAL download (which it obviously is), you won't have to worry about that, will you?

-Stephenlimewire is on cbmatts sh%@ list!!

Solve : Video conversion impossible. Need help!?

Answer»

Hello

I have a big problem with my recently purchased refurbished Sony video camera (dv cassette). I discovered that I'm not able to save the movie on a single DVD so, based on certain advices, I tried to CONVERT it with a so-called video converting software - AVS video converter. The problem is that each time I start the conversion after a short time my COMPUTER blocks completely the only solution to bring it back to life is to disconnect it and then RECONNECT it to power SOURCE. Not even the reset button works. Seems to be a weird problem and maybe it’s a VIRUS but my avg free edition does not detect anything. I uninstalled and then reinstalled AVS video converter for many times but the same behavior happens.
Please help me with an advice on this problem and if it is the case how to detect and eradicate the virus.I assume, you save your camcorder movie to your computer, right. In what format is it saved?
Quote

I discovered that I'm not able to save the movie on a single DVD
Do you try to burn it? With what program? What Windows version? The file extension is avi, I have nero for burning but it does not let me to burn on a DVD because the size exceeds the DVD capacity. A full cassette transfered on my computer has about 12-14gb.I'd think, Nero will ask you for next DVD, if first one is full (like Roxio does), but if not, you may need some AVI splitter, like this one:

Solve : word processing?

Answer»

Yesterday, when I opened up WordPerfect 11, the cursor was and is about 1" TALL, the header space is about 4" tall leaving about 1 1/2" for my main DOCUMENT area. Meanwhile the font SIZE shown above is only 12.

If I open a document written previously, it opens at the 1" size so I can get only a part of it on the screen. I tried copying and PASTING into a file under AOL, and the font is normal. I tried to copy and RESET the font size but going down to 6 makes it what I'd guess to be a font size of 18.

Thinking it was a problem with WordPerfect, I un-installed it then reinstalled WordPerfect but nothing improved. Somewhere there's a glitch but I have no idea how to find it nor how to fix it. I hope someone has the answer.

Thanks.
