Solve : Remote Installation in Windows XP?

Answer»

Hi everybody, I have a LAN network and I need to uninstall some applications on the workstations, but I need to do this beside the network using any tool like Ideal Administrator or another software, taking in care that I haven't Active Directory on my network.

Is it an easy way to do this or I have to make it directly in the computers?

Byei suggest you to use a remote desktop software like Ultra VNC that can download in the internet. by configuring the VNC youcan now already remote the computers but be sure you KNOW all the ip address of your computersHow many computers are we talking about here? I will second the use of VNC for what you want to accomplish. You will have to do one at a time, HOWEVER you can do them all from one computer. There are 87 computers, but I don't want to use VNC or UltraVNC because it means that the users watch what i'm doing in their machines, I want to intercep the workstations (Like Ideal ADMINISTRATION) to uninstall the applications. I'd tried with Ideal Dispatch software but I don't understand it too much. The point is that I need to uninstall applications in silently mode.

Please Help me!!!!!!!Why not do the uninstallations when the users aren't there / or at their lunch time? Lots of administration work is DONE "after-hours" when the network isn't being used.

That's a good point and exactly what I was going to say. I know that I usually stay a little longer when there are things I need to do that I don't want to show to the clients. It's up to you, but the simplest way of doing this is after hours with something like VNC. Quote from: kbm292 on September 13, 2007, 08:02:10 AM

It could be an easy solution, but in this time we (IT staff) couldn't use the VNC because the General Manager order us to put the AUTHENTIFICATION mode in VNC and we couldn't access without the user aprovement. Thats the reason for I'm seeking an altern solutionWell honestly if you have to do this during hours that your clients will be at their computers and you don't want them to see what you did the only thing I can suggest is doing it while they are on lunch, or politely ask them to let you use their computer. It seems that if you are not able to do this remotely then you are going to have to do it the long way. One by one.Well, Thanks!!!! I think that I should make it machine per machine

Solve : Video capture device problems...please help me!?

Answer»

I recently bought a video capture device to download all my video CONTENT from my tv to my laptop....and I'm a little more than lost right now. I don't even know if I'm entering this query in the right category!
At this point I'm not sure if I'm not connecting the wires right--if the software I've installed isn't working--if my computer is too outdated to accept the device(even though it's an XP that I just bought last Nov)--or if I'm simply INCAPABLE of operating anything this TECHNICAL.
Please help me You might want to start by helping us help you...

We'd need more info on your video capture device...manufacturer and model number please...as well as detailed system specs on your computer...

Thank you...I'll do my best--but I'm one step away from being computer illiterate. I don't have the model number on hand, but it works via USB as far as I can tell. And at the other end it has a cord w/red white and yellow wires that I'm assuming connects to my tv, dvd player or vhs. It's a one-touch video grabber by geniatech, if that helps at all.
I've been to their website and sent an e-mail, but no one has answered me yet. The tech support number it gives is from China.
My computer is a laptop compaq presario XP. I'll try to answer any further questions I can.I went to Geniatech's website to see if I could familiarize myself eith their product...

No offense, but their site doesn't provide the user with any technical support information...this is really not good when it comes to support for the end user.

As far as I can tell, the connections are very straight-forward...

1) Connect the wires to your RECORDING device...i.e., DVD, VHS, Camcorder, etc., etc. The cables are color-coded and if you go to GeniaTech's site, there will be a picture showing you which inputs should go where on the recording device.

2) The other end has the USB which connects to your computer..and may have another cable which gets plugged into your sound card.

3) The only other advice I can GIVE you is to read their User Guide carefully...if it came with one.

4) It may have also come with software you need to install...as well as some add-on software you may need in order to get the device or the software to work properly...such as Adobe Reader and DirectX...again...refer to the User's manual for any information you may need.

I hope you get it to working properly...

Hopefully, someone may have the same product as you or are more familiar with this type of video capture device than I and can provide you with much more detail.

Good luck!Okay---I had a friend help me hook up the wires to my computer properly. Video & audio immediately began streaming through to my computer. Unfortunately, the picture is terribly distorted. Its flipping, dissected....just a mess. When I tried the device on my friend's laptop, the picture was crystal clear, but there was no audio!!! Please help me. Perhaps you ned the proper codecs to play your movies properly. I have always found that FFDSHOW is a great addition to the software required. You can get it here

Solve : 2 O/S on 1 computer! Help?

Answer»

I've got 2 versions of Windows XP on my computer, can I remove 1 or do I have to format my computer again? If you have partitioned your hard drive or have 2 Hard Drive, there is no trouble to uninstall one of the OS, but you must configure it on the boot sequence file locate in MyPC. But, if you have installed in the same PARTITION it coul be a trouble, otherwise, you could use partition magic or equivalent application to solve this.

Best wishesI think you can just use the partition magic program or a similar program to delete the partition with the OS you don't want. Then I think you could just add unpartitioned space on to the main drive. When you restart your system, and you get a choice of two operating systems, you should CHOOSE the one you want to keep installed on your machine.

Once the startup process is done, and your computer is ready to accept TASKS to perform certain functions, you click on the "My Computer" icon and locate the hard disks, removable storage devices, and more.

In the hard disk box you should see two drive icons, like "C", "D". If the copy you installed later need to be cancelled, it must reside on the "D" part of the hard disk.

This is because the "C" is where you initial copy of the Windows Xp resides, and it is the one you want to keep installed as the only copy on your computer.

The way you should get rid of the "D" copy is to format the "D" part of the hard disk. just right click it, and choose format. This will delete the Windows Xp copy you don't need.

Delete an OS entry on start up using boot.ini
If you ever had two operating systems dual booting and wanted to delete the option on start up to choose which OS to start, simply do the following.
1.First, open a command PROMPT. Click start, then run and enter cmd, then click ok.
2.Rnter the following command to see the boot info "bootcfg /query"
(this will display your boot settings, what you will need is to take note of which boot entry ID you wish to delete.)
3.Then type the following "bootcfg /delete /id 2
(In this CASE we have chosen to delete the second OS entry which we noted down earlier from the bootcfg query command.)
4.Then once you restart you won't get the option to pick what OS you want to load.
The above is good if you uninstalled an OS but XP still queries you which OS to load

Solve : Which disk image file type??

Answer»

I've been burning .ISO images of my GAMES, and I store all of my images on an external HDD. My collection of media is getting pretty large, but I'm still learning about this stuff.

Okay, I have a lot of questions. I'm wondering what is the best type of file I could save my disk images in. I know ISOS are pretty popular, but I've read they can't be used for multi-track or audio CDs. I would like all my images to be as complete as possible. I don't really care if they would take up a whole ton more space than another image type. I don't think file size is really an issue. I want to try and make as exact a copy as possible.

.BIN/.CUE I realize that all the important data is stored in the .BIN file so if I used .BIN/.CUE files is the .CUE file really necessary? Would I have to keep it with the large .BIN images? It would be nice if I could just have one large file. Wikipedia says that it is an exact copy. Then why doesn't it always circumvent copy protection, etc?

.IMG Wikipedia also says that an .IMG file is a raw dump. Doesn't that also mean it should be like an exact copy?

I remember useing CLONECD to make some .IMG images or something, but they came with all these other files. SUB channel data or something? Maybe a .CUE file too, I don't remember. What is all that for?

.UDF I don't know much about this format. Is this only for DVDs? Would it be a good format for my games that are on DVDs?

I'm thinking about using the .BIN files because they are supposed to be an exact copy of the data. So can I store audio CDs or games or anything in a .BIN file? Would I be able to mount an .BIN of an audio CD in the DaemonTools program and have it work properly just like I had put it into the physical disk drive?

Another sort of unrelated question...

I made a .BIN file of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins for the PSX. I have a PSX emulator on my computer. When I ran the .BIN file it worked fine, but then I used MagicISO to convert it to an .ISO. The .ISO would not run properly, but I'm pretty sure the emulator supported .ISO files. The emulator said something about "iso9660: incorrect header." Why do you think it wouldn't work?

Solve : Nero?

Answer»

Is there an expert Nero out there that can tell me what power calibration error is
and how to fix it???Certainly no 'expert' but Google came up with 3,890k hits, here's one of them.

Below is an extract from another:

"Power calibration errors are typically related to the media that you’re using. Your DRIVE calibrates the power of the laser each time a CD-R is inserted into the drive. Each disc contains a reference value to enable the drive to do this.

There’s also an area on blank CD-R and CD-RW discs for the laser to attempt to power up to the required level. If it fails then the power calibration error occurs. You can try and see if there is a firmware update for your drive, which can sometimes resolve these problems. However, without the model number of your drive we’re unable to point you in the RIGHT direction. Alternatively, try a different brand and speed of media, which is the best way to resolve these errors."

The underlining is mine, the info you supplied in your post is the poorest, not EVEN a mention of which version of Nero you are using! Please read this..

Make Google your friend.Excellent advice, Dusty, all of it, especially the LAST bit.

Dusty...

I agree with contrex...very well put...

Nero version 6.6.1.15
Mitsumi CR-48xcte
win xp home 5.1I think the drive is malfunctioning as well. I loaded roxio 8 and received errors,
Elaborate Bytes, also errors, and a free burning program that also will not complete.
They only start and drive spins up then failure.Typically related to media quality/compatibility but also related to drive failure!

IE write laser failing/failed

Solve : What software do movie makers use to make movies??

What software do movie makers use to make movies?

Would they use SOMETHING LIKE Sony Vegas? Or something more sophisticated?

I am not to sure but Sony Vegas is a very very good program !Avid have been used in a lot of big BUDGET movies. Check their customer list.
http://www.avid.com/profiles/

I think Sony Vegas is targeted more at amateur/low budget productions.VirtualDub is useful

Then there's old Windows Movie Maker which you should find in Accessories...

And ADOBE Premiere is good too.

I use ffmpeg/mencoder for all the conversion/encoding though.Try Camtasia
Its fully functional for 30 days and you can do anything you want from making videos to blending videos together, or cropping them etc.

Solve : Quatto Pro X#?

Answer»

I am suing WORDPERFECT Office X3 on my desktop with no difficulties.

I wanted to transfer that to my laptop which is a SYSTEMAX with 89 GB hard drive, a GB RAM, Celeron 2 GHZ.

Everything transfers without error messages, WordPerfect comes up and runs fine. The spreadsheet will not function -- I cannot enter data and save it, and I cannot open viable spreadsheet files on it. Any time that I attempt EITHER of these, the system becomes unstable, and then closes. The Corel people have tried to help me, but nothing seems to work.

I have uninstalled the system, scrubbed the registry, started again. Still happens.

Any ideas?

MargaretYou cannot simply transfer a program from one machine to another and have it run properly...
This is by design otherwise no one would buy SOFTWARE,
It needs to be installed on the laptop to work properly.

Took up to much space with both in and put alot in back (D drive). Can someone help me? Thanks Yes I just wish to remove XP not win2k.Welcome to the CH forums.

I assume you are currently dual-booting Win XP (on D:) and Win 2k (on C:) with Win XP as the DEFAULT.

I suggest you edit the boot.ini file to delete all reference to Win XP and set the default to Win 2k. Then reboot and if you successfully boot to Win 2k you can delete the XP system files on D:

If you need assistance to edit your boot.ini file please copy/paste the file into a response and editing instructions will be forthcoming.

Good luckIf you want to REPARTITION and format the hard drive, boot the system with a Windows 2000 boot disk and type fdisk which will bring you to the screen you will need to define the partitions for your system. Then format and reinstall your O/S of choice. This will get rid of the dual boot issue, provided you wipe out all partitions with fdisk. If it's still a problem, try fdisk /mbr which rewrites the master boot record of the drive.

Solve : Is a software firewall necessary??

The title says it all really.
I have a hardware firewall active on my modem/router.
Do I also need a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Comodo or Sygate?
Or should I just leave the Windows XP firewall active instead?
Or, should I just rely on my hardware firewall?
I stay pretty safe on the internet - latest updates, Firefox with Noscript and manual cookie control, Spyware Blaster and Spybot immunization kept up to date, AVG antivirus kept up to date.
Just debating whether or not to bother with a firewall as well when my laptop is returned.
Thanks for your opinions.
Calum.YES ANY FIREWALL WORKSQuote from: wefr0 on September 08, 2007, 08:49:15 AM

YES ANY FIREWALL WORKS
Care to clarify that point?
I don't understand you.Your "firewalling" should be in layers.

First, use an ISP or email client service that offers online (server side) virus, spam and CONTENT filters.
Second, use a hardware router with a built in firewall between your modem and your computer or network.
Third, install personal firewall, anti-(spyware, virus, trojan, spam etc) software on your computer.

Lastly ensure you have the latest definition updates for the softwares listed above as well as windows, avoid the use of two software firewalls or anti-virus programs at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another, and remember to audit your system for an accurate security evaluation once you get everything in place.

Below is a list of sites for that:

firewall is a MUST...understand here
http://www.howstuffworks.com/firewall.htmSo you're saying that I absolutely need a software firewall as well as a hardware firewall?

"Check" to all three of your layers, except no anti-spam software (other than the spam filters on Thunderbird and GMAIL) because I don't need it.
I was just hoping to drop my software firewall - looking around I see a lot of people saying you don't need a software firewall if you have a hardware one.The following information is from:
http://steadfast.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-306.html
Quote
They are some differences, though, and they can be used together to give you an even greater degree of protection.

Hardware firewalls are important because they provide a strong degree of protection from most forms of attack coming from the outside world. Additionally, in most cases, they can be effective with little or no configuration, and they can protect every machine on a local network.

A hardware firewall in a typical broadband router employs a technique called packet filtering, which examines the header of a packet to determine its source and destination addresses. This information is compared to a set of predefined and/or user-created rules that determine whether the packet is to be forwarded or dropped. A more advanced technique called Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), looks at additional characteristics such as a packet's actual origin (i.e. did it come from the Internet or from the local network) and whether incoming traffic is a response to existing outgoing connections, like a request for a Web page.

But most hardware residential firewalls have an Achilles' heel in that they typically treat any kind of traffic traveling from the local network out to the Internet as safe, which can sometimes be a problem.

Consider this scenario: What would happen if you received an e-mail message or VISITED a website that contained a concealed program? Let's say this program was designed to install itself on your machine and then surreptitiously communicate with someone via the Internet — a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack zombie or a keystroke logger, for example? And trust me, this is by no means an unlikely scenario.

To most broadband hardware firewalls, the traffic generated by such programs would appear legitimate since it originated inside your network and would most likely be let through. This malevolent traffic might be blocked if the hardware firewall was configured to block outgoing traffic on the specific Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) port(s) the program was USING, but given that there are over 65,000 possible ports and there's no way to know which ports a program of this nature might use, the odds of the right ones being blocked are slim.

Moreover, blocking too many ports would almost certainly adversely affect your ability to use some programs (many games, for instance). Also, some broadband router firewalls don't even provide the ability to restrict outgoing traffic, only incoming traffic.

Advantages of Software Firewalls
Now consider what a software firewall might do in the aforementioned scenario. When you first set up a software firewall, you can specify which applications are allowed to communicate over the Internet from that PC. Programs that aren't explicitly allowed to do so are either blocked or else the user is prompted for confirmation before the traffic is allowed to pass. Therefore, it would likely intercept this kind of traffic before it left your computer.

Another POTENTIAL scenario where a software firewall would be useful is in the case of an e-mail worm with its own e-mail sever, like the recent "SoBig" worm. Its built-in mail server could attempt to send mail on the valid Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port (25), which would probably pass through the router because of its trusted origin.

On the other hand, a software firewall could be configured to only allow Microsoft Outlook to use port 25 (assuming Outlook is your e-mail client). Any attempt by another application to use the port would be dropped, or blocked pending user confirmation. For that matter, the application's attempt to use any port would be blocked if the firewall was configured that way.

By comparison, a hardware firewall that had the ability to filter outgoing traffic might allow you to block most kinds of traffic from a particular PC, but it wouldn't be able to flag you and alert you to repeated attempts to infiltrate your computer.

One obvious downside to software firewalls is that they can only protect the machine they're installed on, so if you have multiple computers (which many small offices do), you need to buy, install, and configure a software firewall separately on each machine. This can get expensive and can be difficult to manage if you have a lot of computers.

But the fact of the matter is that software firewalls generally offer the best measure of protection against certain types of situations like Trojan programs or e-mail worms. Speaking of which, a firewall isn't the only protection method available to you. Whether you end up using a software firewall or a hardware firewall, you should always supplement it with anti-virus software.

A good anti-virus package is just as important as a firewall, and I would seriously suggest that you invest in a good one (I'm partial to both Norton and McAfee myself). However, keeping your virus definitions updated is far more important than which program you use. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Making sure your definitions are current is absolutely critical to maintaining your protection. Many Anti-virus programs today can be configured to automatically update themselves, so you have no excuse for not maintaining them.

The bottom line is that with any home-office broadband connection, a hardware firewall should be considered a bare minimum, and supplementing it with a software firewall on one or more computers (and don't forget anti-virus software) is almost always a good idea. huh...long explanation....isn't it?

Calum...

To put it as simply as possible...routers do have their own hardware firewall. They act like a computer would (basically). If someone were looking to get to your computer, they would see the router, first. They'd need to get through it in order to gain access to your computer...the threat is there, but the router's firewall should stop them.

Personally, I've tried several different firewall programs...they all promise the same thing. I've ended up just un-installing them and using the Windows firewall. This seems to be sufficient for me. I've also found that uninstalling the others and just using the Windows firewall has increased the PC's performance.

I've also tested my security...here...just scroll to the bottom of that page.

I guess it all depends on who you ask...

Though the router's firewall is sufficient...you should also look at it like this:

1) Your router has its own firewall and IP...acting like a computer...the firewall should block malicious attempts...but doesn't notify you of the attack.

2) An installed firewall software program on your computer acts as a backup, when using a router, to further protect you from malicious attacks. The reason we install firewall software (other than using the Windows Firewall) is due to the opinions received from others recommending this and that...making us second guess ourselves as to what is best for our computer system. The Windows Firewall alerts you if a known program is accessing the Internet or if there is an unknown program trying to gain access to the Internet. That's good enough for me.

3) If one is not using a router, then it would be in their best interest to use one...whether it be the Windows Firewall...or one from a third party.

I hope you found this useful...

I ran the Symantec security check, with no firewall active other than the hardware firewall, and passed every test.
I'll run the other checks too to make sure - if I pass those too, then I'll be happy with the hardware firewall and won't bother with a software one.

The reasons for using a software firewall as well as a hardware one are many, for example to prevent Trojans downloading more malware. However, if they can't get on my PC in the first place, it doesn't matter so a software firewall wouldn't help me there.Another Strong Test Site...Quote from: Calum on September 08, 2007, 08:00:46 AM
The title says it all really.

"a" firewall, as in any at all?
or did you mean just hardware or just software, or both?

Quote
I have a hardware firewall active on my modem/router.
Do I also need a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm, Comodo or Sygate?

Here, you've used the word "also", so you're asking if you should use both your hardware firewall and a software firewall at the same time.
Good question - it will be interesting to see the answers you get.

As I understand it, hardware firewalls do an excellent job of what they do.
and that to is block ports one way - inbound.
They don't block outbound traffic.
Software firewalls can do that. So - would you feel comfortable without outbound monitoring? How close an eye do you keep on your computer?
Are you apt to install lots of programs, some perhaps a bit shady, that might start sending out data without your intending it?

See what I mean?

If you are comfortable with just inbound protection, then you can do away with your software firewall.

Quote
Or should I just leave the Windows XP firewall active instead?

Almost always, I read that the WinXP firewall is better than nothing, but better would be to shut it off and use another, such as you listed.

Quote
Or, should I just rely on my hardware firewall?
...

That's what I do now.
After a while of using both hardware and software firewalls at the same time, I decided to stop loading and using the software firewall. I didn't see the need for it here.
That's just me. Again, I'm looking forward to following this thread, - I might learn something too.

kuszmania9999 already linked me to that one.
Incidentally, with no firewall but the hardware one active, I passed all the tests linked to - every port tested is shown as "Stealthed".

I meant "is a software firewall necessary", perhaps I should have chosen that title instead. I'll edit it now.

Exactly.
Quote
So - would you feel comfortable without outbound monitoring? How close an eye do you keep on your computer?
After reading the responses and some more research, that seems exactly the question. The answer is, a very close eye. I have excellent protection (as far as I am aware).
Quote
Are you apt to install lots of programs, some perhaps a bit shady, that might start sending out data without your intending it?
Not any more. I used to, but I stopped that when I became concerned about computer security (say, 2 years ago).
Quote
Almost always, I read that the WinXP firewall is better than nothing, but better would be to shut it off and use another, such as you listed.
Hmm. So the question now becomes, do I need the Windows firewall active?
I'm happy to go without a software firewall, such as Comodo or Sygate, but as I understand it the Windows firewall does the same as a hardware one - it monitors incoming traffic and not outbound traffic. So in that case, it wouldn't be necessary.

Edit: by the way, this makes interesting reading --> http://www.grc.com/dos/grcdos.htmQuote

I would say you are adequately protected then...if you want to leave Windows firewall on there should be no problem...
It does not monitor outgoing traffic however.

I am currently not running a firewall and have no problems.
I do however try out the latest offerings out there on my testbench machine.
I found jetico to be the most effective lately out of all but as with any Firewall app there is a learning curve involved.

I would say though with a bit of common sense in browsing habits and if you're not a heavy torrent user or anarchist you should be good to go...kuszmania9999, if you are going to copy information directly from another website, you need to cite your information (Quote it, tell the name of the article/topic it came from, and give a link).

Your post has been edited to cite the information.

A tool that will make citations for you:
http://citationcenter.net/ctool.php5?style=MLA&vers=6&type_gen=Web-Exclusive
(the method described above is fine)Well, thanks for the advice all.
I think I'll stick with just my hardware firewall then, and turn the Windows firewall off too if it just does the same as the hardware one (ie only monitoring inbound).

Solve : What is the recommendations for firewalls??

I would recommend Comodo; what do you mean by configure and set it up?

I mean does the settings needs to be configured?Well, you really don't need to configure anything; it should automatically adjust to the programs which you are USING that connect to the internet (where you would have to CHOOSE to Accept or Decline access).

Solve : Blocked Outgoing Outlook Email?

Answer»

I have a friend who is relatively computer illiterate. On his desktop computer he has Comcast internet, XP, and Outlook 2002. A few weeks ago his wife noticed a popup message stating something to the effect that someone was attempting to use his email address. She was asked if the computer should block this attempt, which would block his use of outgoing emails. His wife clicked, and now they cannot send emails. I tried to help them over the phone, but while I am relatively good with hardware/software, I do not regularly use Outlook. I am not sure if the message was bogus or not. Has anyone had this problem? Thank you for any help.Do they have an antivirus program? Was the message from that program? If it's the antivirus program that is blocking it, then you need to go into the antivirus program and change the settings. If it is the antivirus, what program is it?Comp Guy: He's using the MCAFEE SUITE provided with Comcast. Initially I was thinking it was the McAfee popup blocker, but the antivirus could be the culprit. Unfortunately his wife does not remember MUCH. I'll have more info Sunday when I get to his house. Thank you for the reply.Did they get anything new on their computer?I don't believe so, but they have a high school fresman and a 7th grader. I'm wondering about the POSSIBILITY of internet downloads by the kids, who use the computer more than their PARENTS. I set my daughter up with her own computer so she would stop messing up mine, and that has worked like a charm. I have to reformat her computer every 6 months or so, but my computer has not crashed.

Solve : whats best for backing up photos to disc????

Answer»

had a bit of a scare with my computer and although luckily it's now been sorted, it made me think about whjat i'd do if if i couldn't have got it sorted, cos i probably would have lost all my photos of my wedding and of my daughter. so i've sorted them all out into files and am wanting to put them onto disc to keep them safe. only thing i'm confused with is WHATS the best programme to use to put them onto disc??? i have nero express and startsmart on the computer, and understandably wanna get all my inportant photos onto disc asap, so if anyone could advise me/help me i'd really appreciate it. thanks for reading, emma xStartsmart is the easy user menu for nero express. There are differnt versions with slightly different setouts but it is GOES something like following

Put a blank CD in the drive. START up startsmart - select make a data CD. In the window that comes up choose the select files to add option. Keep adding files till you get near to the 700MB limit. You will see a moviing bar on the bottom of window showing how much space you are filling. Don't go beyond the red line. When full press the burn button and off it should go. The onscreen help MENUS startsmart gives should help guide you through. Thanks, you're an angel!!! follwed your directions and have now got all my daughters piccies and my wedding piccies on disc and have deleted them from computer so freed up some space for new ones!!!! WELL done but now you only have one copy of them though! If these are really valuable photos it may be wise to make a second set of CD's to keep somewhere safe. Accidents happen and if that CD got damaged or even lost you lose them still.

Go to Startsmart and select copy CD this time, put in the CD with photo's on. It will copy them to a temporary file this time then eject the disc and ask for a blank CD. It will then take the files from the temp file and burn them to the blank.

You will then have a copy you can use when you want to look at them and a safe copy to store away.

Solve : Outlook 2003 notes and Excel?

Answer»

Hi there! I've got a bit of a problem, and maybe someone in internet land can help me.

I am trying to share an Excel spreadsheet with several other users in my office by placing it in the "notes" section of Outlook, as we don't have access to a shared NETWORK drive but we can set permissions to allow others to view and edit files in Outlook. I know this is possible because I have successfully done it before, but it was ACCIDENTALLY deleted and I can't remember how I originally achieved it (getting it to work was a bit of an accident in the first PLACE). Every time I try to simply drag it into Notes, it appears as an empty note and not a viewable spreadsheet.

Any ideas? You won't be able to share a documents using the Notes section. Do you have a Shared Folder in your folder list?

If you are in an office, ask your IT department/Network administrator - they will know the BEST way for you to share documents.

Solve : Adobe Photoshop 7.0?

Answer»

I'm trying to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
I'm realizing I have not a clue as to what I'm doing.
All I'm trying to figure out is how to get the background color of a picture my brother drew to look white as SNOW so I can make an iron on TRANSFER and iron it on a white shirt. The background is kind of an off color and I'd rather have it a crisp white.

Please help.
JodieI would recommend buying a book if you need to get to grips with Photoshop. I like the Visual Quickstart series, see here:
Link Edit

There are a couple of ways of doing what you are trying to do. If you are trying to edit a drawing, then Photoshop may not be the best tool.

1. Open the image

2. Select the Lasso tool

3. ROUGHLY draw around the picture making sure that everything you need to keep is within the line

4. Select Edit > Copy

5. Select File > New

6. Under "Contents" select "White", then click on "OK"

7. Select Edit > Paste

8. Now you can use the magnifying glass to zoom right in to view individual pixels. At this zoom you can use the eraser tool to erase everything around the edges of your image. This will leave you with just your picture on a white background. Make sure you reduce the brush size of your eraser to a size that is suitable - probably 1-2 pixels.

nick, can you change the hyperlink in your post to Photoshop 7 for Windows and Macintosh (Visual QuickStart Guides) (Paperback) ? The long URL you posted makes horizontal scrolling necessary to READ this thread with a monitor set at 1024 x 768 resolution.Done.Thank, patio. theartisanscorner ........ The way I do what you are trying to do is.........
open the image you wish to edit.
Select the "Magic wand tool" .......... click it on the edge of say the face and it should give you a fine dotted line around the image..
Now select the "Eraser tool" and simply erase all the background and it will be nice and white.

Solve : Java runtime environment error?

Answer»

Hope this is the correct forum, 1st time posting here. Searching for answer to Java errors. When I attempt to play games on Yahoo I get several Java Plug-in fatal error messages "Java runtime environment cannot be loaded" and "several Java virtual machines running in same process caused an error". I first observed this problem several months AGO and no new software has been added nor has my firewall been modified prior to the onset. I have uninstalled and installed the Java package from Sun's site twice with no improvement.
I am not a guru by any means, is there a simple solution or perhaps a DOWNLOADABLE fix to this problem? Can you check in Add/Remove programs and list what is there for Java ? ?
Post back and we'll go from there.Java 6 version 3 is currently loaded. If this info has any bearing, I searched errors on Suns site and found these error msgs listed with the explanation that the cause is unknown and are currently being investigated. This leads me to believe there may be a program problem that is widespread to some degree and not a COMPATIBILITY issue on my MACHINE. I also tried a number of work arounds that were suggested and had no luck there. Any further info will be greatly appreciated.

Let him have it that one more post, and we'll see, then....LOL
Depends on how MUCH info he includes...it is not a normal xp, when i install it other software are included such as mozilla firefox, thunderbird, acrobat reader, and etc..(and this flush code).
this is a pirate disc, and at the disc written windows xp Professional end user version.
I don't have problem with this OS but just wondering what is this 'flush code", is it some kind of 'refresh' cause it seems doing that job.

Quote
Where does it show up and what kind of machine is this etc. ? ?

At the desktop, and this is my own computer, just a normal one.

So, our discussion is over, then.well, i know it's illegal to discuss about 'pirated' here but what I'm asking is just what this flush code software is?

Solve : using a generic cd of xp pro to install ,but using the orginal key from laptop?

Answer»

I do not have a recovery disk or the original disk for xp pro. The laptop came with everything already installed. I have had to reinstall xp pro because of a virus. I used a generic cd to do this. Install went well and now it will not except the original key that is on the sticker located on the bottom of the unit. I can use a generic key to finish the install but then it would not let me go get updates. how can I get this original key the be used after the other has been used to install? I tried to explain it all well enough to make sense. Dimarrco The key on the sticker attached to the bottom of the unit is UNIQUELY TIED to the original XP cd which was used to install the Operating System. When you enter the key it is compared with an encrypted key on the cd and if the two match the install proceeds as normal. If they do not match, as you found, several problems occur like not being able to download updates.

If you use a second XP cd and its correct key and that cd has already been used to install an operating system then the duplication will be found when Microsoft runs its authenticity check and the second OS will eventually be crippled.

Contact your local Microsoft office for advice, they may give you a special key to enter.

Good luck

An awful lot of lost keys recently...I have fixed this problem with changing the REG, where it was at and making it PROMPT me to ask for the new key. So I put in the one that the laptop orginially came with and BAM! fixed. Although i have lost all of the other programs that were loaded on it orginially. Thanks for everyones help. Dimarrco

Solve : Microsoft Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0?

Answer»

I just spent an entire day working on a musical slideshow for my business. I have been able to save some projects to a CD as well as a DVD earlier in the day but this evening all of a sudden I am getting an error message stating that I cannot save to a CD, only to a DVD. It says that "A recordable CD drive was not detected." I do not know how to fix this. I have been online trying to get an answer for hours now. This is so frustrating. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have my project saved but it cannot be copied onto a CD unless I place the job back into the software. HELP. hmmm it sounds like theres a problem with your cd drive, not WMM. So you have it published, try putting it on a flash drive and taking it to a different COMPUTER and burning it. also before you do that, try making sure the cd burning program is burning in data mode, or else it is trying to burn AUDIO formats.Welcome aboard

I cannot save to a CD
Is it brand new CD, or the one, you worked with before? CDR, or CDRW?Hey, thanks for the responses.

My computer is brand new. I have both DVD and CD capabilities. I copy CD's all the time. I was also making copies of the CD directly through the Movie Maker software yesterday. Then all of a sudden I was getting that error notice and I can no longer make a CD copy of my work.

I was wondering if I uninstalled the movie maker and re-installed it... perhaps this would fix the error? Except I am not sure how I would REINSTALL this software. I do not know if it was part of my new programs included in my computer whenI bought it or it came from some other place.

ARGH!

Does anyone know if there is any way I can take the DVD copy of this work and change it into a CD? Is there software that will enable a conversion like this?So you have it published, try putting it on a flash drive and taking it to a different computer and burning it.

How do I do this?

Just get a flash drive (aka jump drive, thumb drive) and save to it. When you plug it into the other computer it should automatically POP up.

Hard to say, it depends on the burning program. It sounds like you are writing right to the CD from the WMM and I didn't even know you could burn like that so I'm not sure.

Solve : internet explorer options?

Answer»

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HEY all,

I have several pc's that i have to set up. The main thing thats causeing me a headache is that i have to change loads of the options in internet options.

Stuff like, disable pop up blocker, enable active x downloads for signed and unsinged websites, allow auto running of active x scripts and such.

most of the changes are part of the scrollable options and require a simple tick in the box.

I also have to ADD a trusted site and set upa proxy for internet access (in lan settings)

my question.

Is there any way to automate this???

I think i know the answer as no, but i thought it was WORTH a pop. I have checked to see if iexplore.exe has any command line switches, which it doesn't.

Any ideas?Idea: Use Firefox

hehe just kidding.

Actually, I don't think there is. The import/export function in IE only applies to cookies and favorites. Perhaps if you copied IE's registry entry, which CONTAINS most of the settings information. I've never tried it, so I can't promise anything and would RECOMMEND against it as I'm not sure what will happen if you do. If you try that, you're doing it at your own risk.I don't think there is a way to automate what you're trying to do but I do know this, Never mess with the computer's registry unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing.
One wrong move could result in you having to reinstall Windows.

Exactly why I recommended against trying it. I guess I could have been more specific as to why it shouldn't be tried seems like to much of a ball ache.

I'll just do it manualy.

cheers for the reply guys.

Solve : ActiveX Plugin error 14005?

In trying to install an ACTIVEX plugin form a survey company I keep seeing a 14005 sxs manifest parse error. The installation DIES at that point. I looked up the narrative on that error code on another site and it SAID, " The manifest file contains one or more syntax errors". I varified my ActiveX controls are set correctly. Is there anything else I can do or is it the senders problem? I'm a bit perplexed on the full meaning.

I'm running a DELL 8250, 2.4g CPU, 512 mb memory, with Windows XP Home.Specs plz...

And, have you tried it on another computer to see if it works, too?Guess perplexed was putting it lightly. I'll give it a shot on another computer and let you know. Thanks.

What other specs would you like? Maybe IE7.0?

Yep, just try it on another computer. And I was wonding if you were using IE7... That's what I meant. Sorry.I'm sorry...

Solve : Reinstalling a Compaq?

Answer»

I am helping a friend reinstall her Compaq desktop. Sorry, I do not know the model number, but it is a version that came with the "Restore CD" and HD partition. I do not believe it came with a true OS CD.

If i wanted to install XP onto a new HD (actually, the same HD, but with the partitions destroyed), could I use a generic OEM XP CD with the Compaq CD Key number on the sticker on the case?

Also, she was not sure if she had the MS Works CD's, but it was preinstalled on the machine. She would LIKE it reinstalled as well. Shouldn't she have these CD's or could they get by just including it on the restore partition as well?

If she REALLY wants Works, and she does not have the CD's, then I guess I will use the restore partition.

PKIf there's a restore partition, why use the XP CD? Just reinstall from the partition.Because I really did not want all that junk that comes with a "factory restore."

pkSome restores have options for letting you select what it installs, have you checked that?

If not, simple enough, uninstall the garbage you don't want after the restore is complete. You may want to visit the Compaq website for instructions on creating the restore CD from the hidden partition...
Reason being is all your drivers are there as well.
On some restore CD's you can just find setup.exe in the i386 folder which will just install XP.
I've done this with some success in the past.
And if the machine shipped with Office you simply do the same from the Office folder.Hmmm...interesting Patio. I may need to look into that. I went ahead with the Restore. Luckily, there really wasn't too much crapware on there. I was pleasantly surprised.

OK, new question about this system. RIGHT now it only has 256 MB of RAM (PC133). It can only support 512 MB and has just two RAM slots. I have several 128 MB sticks of RAM laying around, but it is all PC100. I know that these are fairly interchangable, but won't adding the PC100 clock the PC133 down to 100 also? I would think there would still be a benefit in adding 128 MB of RAM.

I have PCWizard installed, so I can tell you WHATEVER you need to know about the mobo and chipset.

I don't want to mess up her system, though she is considering an upgrade to new system for Christmas. This one would become a hand me down to her son.

PKYes it will DROP the other RAM down to PC100... so it's a TRADEOFF. But it would still be a little better with the additional RAM.
Travel to Crucial's site and enter the info to make sure it will run on the PC100 first though.Yeah, I did that, but all it shows is 133.

The Crucial tech said that if the system boots and sees all the RAM, I should be OK.

pkI wish we knew what model of Compaq we were talking about...... Oops, I thought I mentioned it...I guess that was in another forum.

It is a Presario 5410US.

PKWhere is the RAM being reported as 133 ? ?I no longer have the PC in my possesion, but I am pretty sure that the RAM itself was labeled as PC133 and thats also was PC Wizard detected. That is also what Crucial says is the guaranteed compatible.

pkNot a problem...but just so you know if you install PC100 RAM along with PC133 the PC133 may still be reported at it's correct speed.
However it will run at the slower speed no matter what.

Solve : XP Home - How "My Documents" are filed.?

Answer»

I have a new Dell desktop computer - XP Home.

The "My Documents" folder shows up in three places. Any attempt to remove one of them, removes the others. I only want ONE such folder.
And, I don't want "Guests" to be able to read "My Documents".

The three places are:
Start - right click - Explore
1) right under the Desktop - in line with "My Computer" & Local Disk (c:)
2) under Local Disk (c:) - Documents and SETTINGS - myname - "My Documents" (this is the one I want to keep)
3)at the END of the "My Computer" lists there is another copy "myname Documents." This is the same column as the first one.

So - how can I get rid of two of these?

Many thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

These folders all lead to the same destination:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents

Removing one will remove them all.

When another user or guest user is on, they will not be able to view the files under your username unless they have administrator privileges. Thanks!
I see that they can't be seen from the Guest now. It's the items on my C drive that can, so I'll move them.

Sure seems like a waste of disk space to have my biggest set of files on there three times. OH - I get it -- They all POINT to the one directory -- they aren't duplicated. That makes me feel better.

Really appreciate your clarifying all this for me.

Yeah, they're all in that one location under 'C:\Documents and Settings'. The files are not duplicated, the folder is just listed in those three places.

If another user logs on, that is replaced with his/her own documents folder and yours are tucked AWAY until you log back on.If you want to remove the link to My Documents from your Desktop, do this. Right click on an empty space in your Desktop and select Properties, select the Desktop tab, click on the Customize Desktop button at the bottom of that panel, and UNCHECK the box for My Documents.

Solve : XP Home - "have 1 (or 2) programs running?

I use Trend Micro PCcillin - Adaware - Spybot -

Often when I boot up my new computer it says I "have 1 (or 2) programs running" already, but there is nothing there that I can see. How can I find out what is running?

MANY thanks - -
Where does it say 'you have 1 or 2 programs running'?On the Welcome Screen where it has the logos of the different users. I am currently the only user listed. Right under my name it says "You have 1 PROGRAM running". Then I can click on an info link and it says something like "having programs running uses up your memory."

Thanks for any help you can offer!Download HijackThis:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html
and post its log at Computer Viruses and Spyware forum. Are you booting from standby or hibernation? Or are you booting after a complete shutdown?OK - shall do!

Many thanks! Just saw your MESSAGE, Quaxo -

Sometimes I'm booting from the standby or hibernation, and sometimes from a complete shudown. I see that that COULD be the situation!!!!!

I'll keep an eye out for which it is for awhile.

You have good intuition!

Thanks again! That just occurred to me because my girlfriend and I have one SHARED computer and we each have a user on it. I'm used to seeing this message because we both usually have something running.

When you Hibernate or Standby, it doesn't close your programs. However, this does not mean that you haven't closed everything, Broni may be right in that it could be some sort of unwanted program running. I do recommend you follow Broni's suggestion and post a HijackThis log, just in case.

Solve : MS Outlook - have several questions?

I'm on XP Home - new Dell computer - 2GB Ram - heaps of hard disk space, etc.
Need to get my emails off of my old PC onto this new one. (Old PC is XP home also - 560 ram - 30 GB free hard disk)
Questions:
1) Is there a limit to the total size of my email files or folders? (I have thousands)
2) On old computer, If I reinstall MS Office to see if that will get the MS Outlook working on it again, will I lose all of my emails?
3) I'm putting my emails from the old computer onto an external hard disk and then onto the new computer. Any advice as to how to do this easily?
4) On the new computer, I can receive emails with no problem, and can send them ok. However, I cannot 'reply' or 'forward' them. They come back with a message from "System ADMINISTRATOR" - Error 550 - you need authentication - What do they want me to do?

That PERTAINS only to Outlook Express, not Outlook. These answers are just what I need!
Many thanks!

Quaxo - I am using MS Outlook from my Office 2002 disk. I've updated it through the MS Office update program.

Then you can 'back up' your emails by exporting them since you're not using Outlook Express.

Here's how you do that:

1. On the OLD computer, open Outlook.

2. File Menu -> Import and Export...

3. In the Import and Export wizard list, select 'Export to a file' and click 'next'

4. Select what you want to export. In this CASE, you want to export 'Personal Folder File'. Click that then 'next'

5. Select the folder you want to export. You can export EVERYTHING (contacts, emails, calendar, etc.) by selecting 'Mailbox - Your Name' or your emails only by selecting the inbox (if that's where they are STILL all located). Also, tick the 'Include subfolders' option, then click 'next'.

6. Choose a location to save to and name your exported file. Below that, choose what you want it to do with duplicate mails, should it find them. Click 'Finish'.

7. On the next dialog box, type in a name or description for this file. Something like 'Outlook Transfers' or whatever you feel like. Select 'No Encryption' and don't enter a password. For what you're doing it won't really be needed. Click 'OK'. Your backup should now be created. It might take some time and the file might become quite large.

8. Copy this file to the other computer, either by CD/DVD or through a network, flash drive, whatever.

9. Once you have the file on the other computer, go into Outlook.

Getting them onto the other computer might differ from here. Depending on what updates you've done. This first one should be what you need, but if it isn't, follow the second one:

Quote
10. File -> Import and Export...

11. Select 'Import from another program or file' and click next.

12. Select 'Personal Folder File' from the list

13. Locate the file you've copied. Choose option for handling duplicates on this computer. Click 'Next'.

-OR-
Quote
10. File -> Open -> Personal Folder File

11. Locate and open the file

The second option doesn't import, but simply opens the file for browsing and use. You're basically viewing from an archive. This is useful if you want to clear out those thousands of e-mails, but not lose them. You can simply create this backup of them, put it on a disk, and open the archive when needed.
