Solve : MSN goes crazy or makes us slaves??

Answer»

This morning (it is 08.22 here) I tried to log on MSN and it GIVES the message I put below. What does that mean? MS wants us to do exactly what they want?
Ridiculous! How to handle this? Does anyone else get this stupid message? uhhh what?
It just wants you to install a newer version.... what's the big deal?just click no if you don't want it.yeah?what's the big deal, but choosing to install the newer version wasn't a bad idea at all Quote from: kuszmania9999 on September 13, 2007, 02:25:08 AM

You can't refuse. It says you MUST! If you choose NO then you can not get back to log on your previous version.
First, I don't like MSN Live, second it takes about 50mb where older version is 8mb. It brings with itself tons of useless things, does not show my contacts' nicks properly just their emails. Finally I want to continue with my older version and don't like anyone to tell me what to use and force it. This is just unethical. I am talking about MS guys, not you.Use the windows one.... The thing is Peccavi, like it or not, it is Microsoft's prerogative to choose not to support an older version of their client on their network. (The keyword here is their.)
If you don't like the Windows Live client I suggest you look into non Microsoft alternatives. Here's a few that support the MSN netwok:
Trillian
Pidgin
Miranda IM
Pidgin all the way!
Seriously, if you don't like it so much then just use an alternative, there are many available.Quote from: Peccavi wrote to Miccrosoft
Dearest MSN,

I have been using MSN Messenger 7.5 till today and when I tried to log on next time it says i MUST install MSN Live to proceed. I don't want to install and use Live Messenger. I am happy with MSN 7.5. What should I do? Don't you think it is a little bit unethical to force PEOPLE what to use?
Hi Elman,

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger Technical Support. My name is Dawn and I'll be glad to assist you with your concern.

Based on the information I received, I understand that you are using MSN Messenger 7.5 on your computer and is satisfied with it that is why you do not like to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger. However when you try to log in now, you get prompt that you have to upgrade to be able to proceed. I know how important this is to you and I look forward to providing you with the necessary assistance.

Elman, Microsoft has issue a mandatory upgrade to serve as security UPDATE to resolve a publicly disclosed vulnerability in MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution when a user accepts a webcam or video chat invitation from an attacker. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system. We apologize if this is causing you inconvenience, but please know that your security is our utmost concern.

To upgrade to Windows Live Messenger, follow these steps:...

Yep. They don't want to spend resources PATCHING up the old the client when they have a new one out. Solve : Please help how I can print page 1 of 4 from Outlook 2007??

Answer»

Hi everybody,
I hope many of you will be using Outlook 2007 (I am using it on Vista). What I have NOTICED that there is no option to print a set number of pages in it. For example I am communicating with someone on a particular subject and there are replies and replies which often makes the mail 4-5 pages or more. There is no option to select the number of pages to print, only to print either even or odd pages. I hope some of you would have faced this problem and managed to find a SOLUTION. The only option that microsoft can give me is a workaround to copy and paste the email into word and print from there however this is time CONSUMING and not a solution to the problem.

Please help how I can print page 1 of 4 from Outlook 2007?Can you post a screen print, such as the one below, from Outlook 2003?

And, state exactly how you're trying to print. Are you starting from the FILE menu on the main Outlook window, or opening the email message in a separate window and starting the print command from there? I see different options, depending on which approach I take.

Solve : anybody ??

Answer»

is there FREE SOFTWARE out there that can brigten VIDEOS like gene kelly in singin' in the rain and save it , then play back at normal , like we originally seen it ?

Windows Movie Maker can BRIGHTEN a movie.
a music video i meant , ss

i have gene kelly - singin' in the rain, is there a product, free out there to brighten this ?

and i have many many other music videos.

plz helpDo you mean one of these?

click on link below

http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/843/20411008.JPGI don't get it...
Do you have the music video stored as a file on your computer? If you do, you should be able to use WMM to brighten it.
If not then how is the video currently stored? VHS, DVD, etc?mpeg, or avi forms, it's so i can brighten and upload to myspace.com

brighten and save to upload to myspace or for future use , like just to watch and enjoy

Windows Movie Maker should be able to handle those formats and do what you WANT.

Solve : Windows Media Player/Internet Explorer problems?

Answer»

I left my computer on to RUN during Disk Cleanup and I UNCHECKED Windows Media Player. Which means it wouldn't be cleaned (...right?)
And Windows Media Player is RUNNING. But the Desktop icon is gone and the Mini-Mode option in the taskbar isn't there anymore. *censored*?

No Internet Explorer icon either...More information please
What windows are you running?
What kind of disk cleanup utility did you use?
Is it only your desktop icons that have disappeared? I.e. do you still have start menu /quicklaunch icons?Quote from: Deerpark on September 17, 2007, 03:58:58 PM

More information please

What kind of disk cleanup utility did you use?
Is it only your desktop icons that have disappeared? I.e. do you still have start menu /quicklaunch icons?
What kind of info?
Windows XP
The one found in Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
Yep, still have Start Menu. And it seems LIKE only the Windows Media Player Icon and Internet Explorer tools have disappearedHmm...
Exactly what kind of clean up did you do?
If you merely selected Disk Cleanup and selected the Disk Cleanup tab there is no option for cleaning anything related to Windows Media Player.
Did you select More Options and choose "Clean up..." under the Windows Components section?Yeah, I did the More Options clean up.Well then you've uninstalled WMP and Internet Explorer (technically speaking they're not really uninstalled but just hidden and the icons have been removed).
That section controls what Windows Components you have installed. Checked items are installed, unchecked items are not currently installed.
So to restore WMP and IE you have to RECHECK them.

Ok everything worsk EXCEPT no Mini-Mode. It's mostly a toolbar setting, but stillDoes this enabled it?
Right click your task bar
select Toolbars
choose Windows Media PlayerQuote from: Deerpark on September 17, 2007, 04:52:29 PM

Glad I could help
Oh wait...there's a LITTLE more -_-
When I open like an mp3 or an avi by means of "File > Open", it won't show up. Even though the "Media Type" files are selected below it. So it won't show the mp3's and the AVI's unless I tell it to show me the files or the "Any file" SELECTION. How do I make it so all the Music and Video files will show up when the "Media Files" filtering (I guess?) is selected. I tried changing it to "Play all of the file types" in the Options settingsJust for reference in future when running any maintenence utilities including but not limited to defrag, disk cleanup or any protection programs the machine should be at idle with no other tasks running...

Solve : GIMP Animation Trouble?

Answer»

Well umm... my copy is FAIRLY new, and sometimes companies tend to allow less and less for free.

And also, those instructions do not make much sense to me. Does the first one say to open the picture or the animator program? My pictures open with the windows viewer, so double-clicking them will not do any good. maybe you could send some screenshots. I guess I should have said first open Gifcon then from within Gifcon...
(1) ----> (7)But it doesn't show an individual image. It shows a box thingy with each frame in the image.I haven't used Gifcon for many years so I can't help you with exact directions.
All I know is it works when my Lady uses the steps I put up above.

Try loading a single gif file into it like your avatar and see if you can make the background transparent.

If you get that far then I think it's only a matter of doing them frame by frame for ANIMATED ones.Umm... no... this version is very different from the version your Lady uses. Well anyway, thanks for the help. I looked in SourceForge, and there will be an opensource gif animator coming out sometime, so I'll have to get that, but it isn't out yet .Sometime soon I'll reinstall Gifcon & have a play with it, I've GOT a bit of other stuff to do for the next couple of days.
Stay tuned.I will! Probably not a good example but this one has been bugging me for a while.

Solve : Outlook Express - Setting up Groups?

Answer»

I have an older version of Outlook Express (not sure what version?) and I upgraded to Outlook 2007. My computer kept the older version and now I have a two - one older and the new 2007. Depending on the Oulook I open it will download the EMAILS making it the most current. I am still using the older version because I am most familiar and I am currently trying to SET up "group" emails in my address book.

I would like to just have the updated version 2007 and delete the older version - not sure how to do this safely.

Also, I am no LONGER able to set up Groups. I tried this in the older version they way I had always done before but it does not save the group after I create it. And in the 2007 version I can't figure out how to do it at all.

Thank you to anyone who can help!I think we NEED some clarification. You say Outlook Express and you say Outlook. They are not the same thing. So, exactly which is it?

Solve : Startup Error Tones?

Answer»

Hi there.....

Well I was DIRECTED here to see if anyone else has experienced this.
As Windows is starting, and my Webroot Spy Sweeper and Window Washer load, I get multiple ERROR tones, eleven beeps in a row to be exact. I can't seem to find what is not being started or prevented from starting during that time.
I tried going into Spy Sweeper then into the Shields/Startup to see what programs MAY be CAUSING it. With the exception of one program everything looks normal.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Iggy

Computer: Toshiba Satellite P25-S5092
Operating System: Windows XP Pro/SP2Go to Start > Run > type msconfig and hit ENTER.

On the startup processes tab, take out the optional ones (programs you have installed yourself, and any other ones you are sure aren't essential to start up) Then add them one by one to find the culprit.

Solve : Program to backup cell phone text messages, etc. to laptop via Bluetooth??

Answer»

It is really important to me that I save the text messages on my phone (SonyEriccson w300i) to my computer. I am out of SPACE on the phone and I don't want to delete them to make space. Like I said, they are very important to me and I want them for sentimental value. My laptop has bluetooth in it, so right now, I'm connected to my phone, but I'm trying to figure out some way to get them off my phone and onto the computer for safe keeping. If you NEED anymore info, let me know. Thanks in advance.Did your phone come with any synching software?

If not...just do a Google search for free cell phone synching software that's compatile with your phone.

You might also want to visit a cell phone store to check pricing for that same type of software...compatible with your Sony...I've downloaded a couple of programs now, but none of them have worked yet. EVEN programs that say that my phone is supported, I can never seem to get my phone discovered by them. My laptop Bluetooth discovery program finds the phone with no problem. None of the programs can find it though. QUOTE from: Gabriel_Knight on September 15, 2007, 01:42:31 AM

Solve : Windows media centre?

Answer»

After opening up Windows media centre my mouse goes missing! It therefore becomes very difficult to browse through the options available - Any ideas why this should happen, the problem only exists in this programme - what can Ido to retreive the mouse indicator? Your cursor should appear after moving your mouse around for a bit.Have to say - tried that and some additional looks through the mouse properties SECTION without LUCK so far, and as I said it only happens in this programme!
Any additional ideas?
Has anyone else using Vista come across this problem?Quote from: RsC on September 20, 2007, 08:01:38 AM

Are you wiggling it around a lot?YEP! Like crazy!
It's there - I know it is - 'cos every time the mouse is scrolled over a function button the button flashes once, just like it would if the mouse were showing - but it doesn't show!So the buttons appear when you move the mouse, just not the cursor.Have you tried another mouse ? ?

The mouse is fine, it's just that the cursor is not appearing in WMC.Maybe I'm not making myself clear here - And I apologise to those reading these comments for not doing so.
The mouse is a Logitech cordless click plus, it works fine with every other programme except Windows Media Centre. Yes the only problem is when opened in WMC there is no pointer moving around the screen - no matter what I do it won't show, but I know it's there 'cos as I move the (now hidden) mouse around it flickers some of the activation buttons on the various areas of the screens, I can't do anything with it as it takes so long to FIND the *CENSORED* thing when scrolling and shuffling around the screen! I've tried re-installing the mouse and checked the mouse properties all seems O.K. there.
Plus, annoyingly, it shows on the screen with every other programme.

Solve : Nero Burning Rom v.5.5?

Answer»

My computer at home is custom built. It came with Nero Burning Rom v.5.5.
This is the best CD burning software I have found. I do photo work
both at home and at work. I am running Win XP and so is the computer at work. My employer RECENTLY bought Photoshop so that I could do more photo EDITING at work and would not have to bring so much home. I am doing the work at home and burning multi-SESSION CD's. The problem is that my employer has Roxio at work and it will not recognize the CD's I burn at home. Also, Roxio is much more difficult to use and the version at
work will not burn multi session CD's. The solution seemed to be to BUY an authorized version of Nero (the Nero CD that came with my computer was
bundled and had no serial # and so would only work with my computer).
I PURCHASED a brand new, still in the wrapper, complete with Srl #, Nero v. 5.5 on e-bay. It installed ok, but will not give me the "multi session" option when I want to burn a CD. I used the "Autodetect CD-Rom" feature and got information that the software had found "Recording Device..........Virtual Device" Also, even when recording single session, the software wants to save the virtual file before it will burn. Can anyone help me? Thanks, MikeM

Solve : Videos freeze computer?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP but had the same problem running 2000. When I try to play a DVD or open a downloaded video file (any format) my computer doesn't exactly lock up but moves extremely slow. The DVD or file doesn't play and I end up having to end the program from TASK manager. The computer then returns to normal speed immediately. This only started happening one night after I HELD the power BUTTON in to shut the computer down since I was tired and thought it was taking too long (bad mistake). I had to reinstall windows, I tried putting XP on after this problem, but it still persists. Any thoughts?Do you know your system specs?Hey All,
I got videos working by turning hardware acceleration off. I'm not sure how that helps, but it did. I'm going to try moving it up to some acceleration and see if that makes a difference. Take it easy.Ok, glad you got it working. Thanks for REPLYING.

Solve : Changing Workgroup?

Answer»

Hi there, I have a group of workstations connected by a LAN network using various workgroups, the question is: May I change the workgroup of any machine on the network remotely? if it's possible, houw could I do it?

Thanks and best wishesHi.

You need to give us some more information. How many machines and what Operating Systems they RUN would be a good start.Right, I have 83 workstations and WINDOWS XP Professional EDITION SP2 in every machine. Is it any way to change the workgroup in a workstation through the network?Their are several programs like remote desktop that would allow you to access XP computers and i BELIEVE it possible to make the changes but any change to a computers workgroup would require a reboot.
You could tell it to do a restart but you could not remotely login to the computer again until after it had been logged back into locally on the computer itself. You would also need to reset the permissions locally for it to allow remote access once you changed its designation. OK, I'll try it thanks

Solve : anti malware protection?

Answer»

Is it okay to use numerous anti viral, anti spyware etc. PROGRAMS on ONE computer, or can they overload everything when used together? it is safer to load up a lot of programs?Conflicts can arise if you install more than one anti-malware program, best to stick with one of each type, firewall, anti-virus etc.

On these forums you will find various recommendations for Zone Alarm Firewall and AVG for anti-virus both of which are free. Other contributors will recommend different programs, the choice rests with you.

Good luckIt's a mistake that you have too many antispyware-malware on your computer, because it try to make similar functions at same time, you have to uninstall and take a descition about what antispyware use. I have a greatest experience with panda software and it's not expensive www.pandasoftware.com.

Best wishesYou should have only one software firewall running on your computer...more than one may cause system instability and SUBSEQUENTLY cause the computer to crash.

The same goes for antivirus protection...

You can have more than one anti-spyware program installed, but it is wise to have only one actively scanning your system. The choice is up to the end-user...If You do not trust one aniti-vir enough, you can use one of them for real-time protection and another for occasional scanning of your system. I use avast! as a real-time protection and additionally scan my system with ArcaMicroScan from time to time. ArcaScan found something that avast! had omitted a few times, but this does not happen very often. As for Panda mentioned above, it doesn't work well on slower computers (at least that's my experience with it).

Solve : Runner Error?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I have a laptop with Windows XP SP 2 and for the past two days everytime I turn on my computer I get a pop up message that says Runner Error - Runner file name (logitechdesktopmanager.exe) lacks a '-' (the app id separator)

I'm assuming it's a problem with logitech but I have no IDEA how to fix it or what the error even means.

If I can provide any more information please let me know.

Thank youHad you tried with msconfig? I assume that you have WXP. You could execute it y this way: Start==>Run==>msconfig

There is a tab called Start, seek there any kind of PROCCESS called like the error message or similar (I REFER to logitech)

ELSE, you can execute regedit and seek on the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and you could clear it from the start up!!

I HOPE to be useful to you

Good luckI would also suggest this if you have time...
Un-install the Logitech software from Add/Remove programs and shutdown.
Re-boot and when you re-install the Logitech software make sure to uncheck the desktop manager part of the program as this is an option in setup.
It's mostly intrusive and keeps phoning home for updates so you're better off without it...
Just my opinion.

Solve : AOL personal filing cabinet lost?

Answer» PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME .
I HAVE AMERICA ON LINE. MY EMAILS I HAVE ALWAYS "SAVED ON MY PC " WHEN I USE THE AOL.
I HAVE LOST ALL MY PERSONAL FILING CABINET, SO NOW ALL MY MAIL IS GONE SINCE 2001.
I DO A SEARCH UNDER MY SCREEN NAME AND DO THIER STEPS OF COPYING AND PASTING TO THE ORGANIZE FOLDER BUT NO LUCK.

HERE IS THE QUESTION, IS THERE A WAY TO FIND ALL MY EMAILS ON MY HARD DRIVE AND READ THEM WITHOUT USING AOL. IN OTHER WORDS CAN I READ THEM USING SOME METHOD WITHOUT USING AOL TO OPEN THEM?
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME USING THIS FORUM I HAVE JUST JOINED.
I HOPE THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP ME, I AM FRANTIC ABOUT MY MAIL BEING GONE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.What happened to the capslock button ? ?What version of AOL do you have? 9.0?

In 9.0, saved e-mails are typically kept in the C:\PROGRAM Files\America Online 9.0\organize folder. There should be a file with the same name as your username. It has no extension (such as .txt or .exe).

If that folder isn't found, there may be a Shortcut to organize folder, which should lead to a folder with a name like C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize.

If you still can't find the file, you can open up the Windows search function and perform a search for you AOL username. This will hopefully yield a few results.

If you find your e-mail file, I don't know of any programs that allow you to view the contents. You can use a TEXT editor such as Notepad, but it's not very reliable/accurate. But at LEAST you can have the comfort of knowing that your e-mails weren't lost and that they can at least still be viewed with AOL.

Solve : Acronis true image.?

Answer»

Can Acronis create an image of an entire disk or does it create an image of a partition?

i.e. If I have a hard disk with three partitions C: D: and E:, can I create an image of the entire disk on a new HDD without having to image individual partitions?

I do not yet have a copy of Acronis, just doing some research into it before raiding the bank account.

ThanksAcronis can copy a 1) SINGLE partition 2) MULTIPLE partitions of choice 3) entire hard drive. You have the opportunity to choose during the SET up process.

You're welcome Ivy...

In the future...if you have any QUESTION about any process(es) that should, or should not be running on you computer, just visit the following pages and click the image for the Process Library...it's a very useful tool when and if you run across a process you're not too sure about...okay?

Malware Guide
Windows Tune-up Guide

Good luck!Oh thanks so much Saviour ! i was myself thinking where can i get the info about all these processes!
thanks a lotYou're welcome, Ivy...

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you...

I'll try not to let it happen again...

-SteveThanks again for the previous help Saviour ,
i have a doubt though, whenever i TURN off my computer the settings are again changed, then my COMODO again displays the same message, do i have to check the settings every day?thanks again.Ivy...

What you are experiencing is one of the reasons I uninstalled Comodo from my computer.

Even though it's in its learning stage...and is a very good firewall program...the constant alerts...even when you tell it to remember your answer are quite annoying.

Whether or not you want to live with it or not...well...that's entirely up to you.

-Steveoh GOT it, thanks a lot Steve. You're welcome...windows xp having a user control option, which only the adminstaarator can modify, if u are in a admin user, create a anothrr user , and try giving all authentication for all user , , and try the same
okThanks Arummani ,
Lets see if i have to do that (what do you say Steve?) but maybe i should just ignore comodo's fits, or check it manually every time i switch on the comp.
thanks againIvy...

If you're going to use Comodo...it will continually learn from your Internet habits.

The best thing to do is allow it to learn and always make sure you tell it to remember your answers.

In addition...stay on top of the processes that run on your computer...knowing which of them should be allowed...and which shouldn't.Got it, thanks Steve. My antivirus was checking for updates , but on the main console it was given updates not recommended , so i denied it from updating , but it would show up after every 5 minutes so i asked comodo to remember my answer.....and now i was told that i need to let it update , what do i do now, Comodo dosent allow it to update!!!!!!!!!
please help.Ok heres what i did, i went to comodo console , from there i went to Component moniter and from there to application moniter and there i clicked on McFee updates which was set on deny, i went to edit and changed its settings back to allow.
now comodo is letting it connect to the internet.
You're getting pretty good at this...

You do learn pretty quick. Thanks a lot Steve .

Solve : mbr software?

Answer»

Where can i GET a master boot record recovery software that too a full version

==>> My problem is that the MBR sometimes FAILS to record the data due to which there is loss of data so in order to recover ....

the better way by not losing it from the begining
I need a software Say what?
The MBR only stores the boot SECTOR which the BIOS uses to start the PROCESS of loading the operating system. I.e. the MBR doesn't record or store data.

If you're losing data this could be the sign of a failing hard drive, but before making any assumptions I think you need to post some more info.

Give US a more detailed description of the problem you're having
your system specs
what operating system you have installed

Solve : Wat do I need?

Answer»

I have just bought a new computer that uses Vista Home Premium. I have installed AVG Free (I deleted the trial version of NORTON that came with the computer) AVG ANTISPYWARE and an old version of Window Washer.
What do I need to keep my computer safe and running well.
glenaftonMy personal preferences are AVG anti-virus, Zone Alarm firewall and SpywareBlaster, with AdAware, Spybot S&D, CCleaner as maintenance tools.

AVG seems to be updated daily, the others need updating as necessary.

I FIND that running Windows Washer on a regular basis is a waste of time and need only be run when you are disposing of the hdd.

Not had an INTRUSION on any pc for over 4 years when Lop.com was the heavy.

Good luckI use a range of PROTECTION software all from what I’ve experienced are great –

Free –
AVG
Spybot – Search and Destroy

Paid –Norton 360

Solve : 36 hours for emails to be recieved, HELP!?

Answer»

When i send an email, it TAKES between 24 and 36 HOURS for the email to be RECIEVED no matter who i send it toWhat kind of email do you have?
Is it an email with your ISP, a web based email service like Hotmail or gmail or a corporate email?

But in any case, after you've send an email it is pretty much out of your hands and up to your email provider to GET the message send. So I would contact them and complain.

Solve : Exectuables?

Answer»

I recently reformatted and installed McAfee installed on my computer. After a few weeks i got an email from mcafee saying my subscription was up even though it's not supposed to be.. so i switched to Norton 2007. I first uninstalled mcafee then ran the norton cd after a reboot. the norton cd worked through the installation until it froze saying "System Protection ... Feature: Complete". I had left this running while i was at school so i assumed it was done when i got home. I rebooted my computer and upon restart the icon showed up in my icon bar but said it was out of date. I tried opening norton, even though it is supposed to automatically after installing and rebooting. Instead the process opened but nothing came up. I tried reclicking it and tried going to the folder and manually clicking the executables but all i saw was the hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing. I checked Task Manager and It had a BUNCH of multiple Norton process's in the process tab. I couldn't end the process, getting "Access Denied" like with all norton products, yet each process told me it was using "60k" memory usage and wasn't even running. I tried rebooting again, and still nothing would open. I tried removing norton via control panel but it just gave me an error and recommended Norton's Removal tool. I went to Norton's site and DOWNLOADED the Norton_Removal_tool.exe. This opened the first time and ran the uninstall. Upon rebooting I attempted to reinstall norton but the same thing happened and it froze at the end of the installation and after rebooting still the same thing happened where the process would open but do nothing. This time even the Norton_Removal_Tool did nothin and I had to find another removal tool. This time i found something called NoNav which deletes nortons registry values and removes the programs. After running this I was able to run the Norton Removal Tool. My latest attempt did not freeze but also never prompted me to reboot AND upon reboot I did get through the activation process. It put an icon on the desktop but has never once put an icon in the icon bar and still continues to open process's all running at "60k" Memory usage and not doing anything. I have tried looking around for some help but i haven't found anyone with a similar issue any help would be appreciated.

A Hijack This log is worthless unless it is all included. You may need to use several concurrent posts, so the experts can help.

What is your system date? Is it CORRECT in the BIOS and in Windows? Where did you get these programs, and have you activated them before? If I just bought McAfee and got an error message I would be calling them pronto with a serial number rather than forking out more dollars to someone else.

Any specifics on your computer hardware may be helpful.I didn't just buy McAfee, I have had it with my ISP, MSN, and just recently got a message saying it expires in like 5 days. I bought Norton 2007 and yes, it let me activate it on my last try but other than that it never opened the software. System Date is correct.

Solve : Acer eRecovery Management not responding?

Answer»

Hi all,

Anyone else have this problem with the Acer eRecover Management program. Every time I shutdown/restart Windows XP SP2 on my Acer Inspire 5672WLMi laptop XP complains this program is not responding, and it wont shutdown until I click "End Now".

Its HAPPENED EVER since I've had the PC despite installing various anti-virus anti-spyware and Windows updates. I've sorted every other problem on the PC but its starting to BUG me that I've still not fixed this one after a year.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Banjo

Solve : Transferring files to another computer?

Answer»

Hi,
What's the easiest way to transfer files across to another computer.
My friend said you can use an A to A usb wire, is that true. And if so do both the computers have to be on, with a monitor PLUGGED in.
Thanks A straight A to A usb cable will fry your USB ports...they do make them for this purpose however and are designed to do file transfers.
You will need to set up a network on at least one of the machines then ADD the other to the network.
Another option is a crossover network cable provided both machines have a NIC card.

A third and easy option would be to remove the HDD that needs to be copied and hook it up as a slave drive in the other machine....I think I might just bye loads of DVD disks.
I don't want to break anything. PS patio, Thanks for your advice,

Thanks again

PLEASE explain the problem in more detail. Is your computer running slower than in the past? What tasks do you do where you'd like better PERFORMANCE? We don't know whether you really have a software issue or a hardware issue without some clarification.

Solve : Outlook sending but not receiving?

Answer»

I am using Outlook 2003 with Windows XP. EVERYTHING ELSE is fine but for the last 36 hours, I have not been able to RECEIVE mail. It sends ok.

When I hit 'Send/receive' it says, "receiving status 50%" then says, "receive complete" but there's nothing there. I've tried testing it by sending emails to it from another ACCOUNT but they don't come in.

Any IDEAS would be most gratefully received.

TaI would recommend backing up your outlook profile and then deleting it. Uninstall outlook and reinstall. This usually solves any problems with being able to send/receive emails. But before you do that....are you behind a firewall of any kind?

Solve : Windows Live Messenger??

Answer»

Recently I have noticed a large number of files on my c:\ drive they all end with the extension .SQM and were hidden. Now I have done some RESEARCH and I believe they are related to Windows Live Messenger, what I was wondering is ; are these files safe to delete or will that modify my WLM (Windows Live Messenger)? Thanks in advance.

[ Sorry If I POSTED in the wrong category ]

[I use Windows Live Messenger 8.5 beta]Deleting them doesn't affect live messenger, but it will keep on recreating them. For some reason the betas of live messenger creates the sqm files in the root of c:\ while the non betas store them in application data folder in your user folder. Thanks for the speedy reply Deerpark, deleting them won't affect my system in any way then. . However is there any way to stop WLM generating these SQM files? No they're not essential, apparently they're only used for storing QUALITY of SERVICE data (whatever that is). The only way of GETTING rid of them (short of switching to another Instant messenger client) is to stop using the beta. The stable version still creates the files, but stores them in an out of the way folder instead of in the root of C:\.Thanks for the replies Deerpark, all my questions are answered. . Topic closed Glad I could help

Solve : hal.dll is corrupted or missing.?

Answer»

I googled this up,I found these solutions..

-Safe Mode
-Tried all of these here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htm
-Don't have WinXP CD(Which most people say don't work anyways)
-I can ACCESS the recovery console fine.
-I CAN access the hard drive from the inside using my other computer by connecting the hard drive with the dll error and using it as a slave.

Is there any solution to what I can do with the 5th option being I have access to another computer?Have you tried copying Windows\System32\hal.dll from your working computer to the problem one?Yes,I did this.I knew there was something wrong though,my current computer's hal.dll had 96 KB while the other ones corrupted one had 130 KB.I believe the HAL.dll FILE is unique to the machine XP is installed on...
All the fixes i'm aware of require an XP CD to get it right...I went to Wal-Mart with my pops to do some shopping.Next to the console and pc games I spotted a Windows XP CD,for 99$(100 something w/tax).I asked to buy it and now I'm using it,I really didn't care about repairing.I'm doing a new install right now. There wasn't really anything valuable on that computer. It was a casual comp for just playing games, never used for shopping, storing PHOTOS,etc..But the one that I'm on is the one I would have to backup since its got some of my most important data on it.Well 99 bucks is a good deal for XP...make sure to take care of that investment...
And you NEED to seriously start thinking about a regular backup strategy as you now see how quickly things can go South on you.

Stop by for suggestions...

Solve : Program for Virtual HD linked to multiple folders from other drives??

Answer»

Hey everyone. First time poster. I can usually find anything I need but this one is stumping me.

First of all, I have many HD's that are basically all full so I can't just simply rearrange files to solve my problem.

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to make 1 virutal hard drive. Within that single VIRTUAL drive, I want to make folders like "Music" and that folder would also act like a "virtual folder" linking to an actual HD that has all of my music files on it. I need ANOTHER "virtual folder" on the same virtual drive that would link to a separate HD that contains my movies and so on . I have about 10 actual folders spread out on 4 different physical HD's, but I want them all to be LISTED and accessible from a single virtual drive filled with virtual folders linking to each.

The reason I need this is because I have APACHE installed on my WinXP SP2 system and due to lack of space, I cannot store everything in the "web root folder", nor can I simply place a link to the separate folders on separate drives within the root folder. I need to create a virtual drive with virtual directories that link to everything.

I need something like the standard windows subst.exe command but with the ability to link multiple folders to a single virtual drive.

I hope you followed that and if not I can try to explain it a little better.

Thanks for any help! After hours of searching, I found what I needed. It's a freeware app CALLED WinHardLink. Here's the link in case anyone else was wondering how to do something like this - http://www.brothersoft.com/file_disk_management/disk_management/winhardlink_46896.html

I tried many other programs (and combinations of programs) and none of them did what I needed. This one worked like a charm Sometmes these things take time...lots of it...

Sorry we couldn't help, but it's nice to know you solved your own issue...

Kudos!

Solve : alternative for Open Office??

Answer»

I have Open OFFICE which I rarely use. Am WONDERING if there's a smaller version of MSWord or Open Office. If I choose to go with a another program, would I still be able to open the few documents I have composed with OO?
I am running Windows XP. Thank you for any suggestions you MAY give.

Acornso if there's a smaller version of OO, you would still use it? From what I'm seeing, you're limited to OpenOffice or MS Office for a free office suite for Windows.
And as regards file types, you will be able to open MS file types with alternative office suites, so save as those types if you switch. Thanks for your replies Calcum & ghostdog74. Took a look at that Portable OO & that sill isn't what I want or need. I should explain further that I prefer a program w/o all the bells & whistles. Is there such a program or application or whatever? I do make phone & address LISTS...can't think of anything else I use OO for. I'm retired so don't I don't require a mega set-up. Thanks again.

If the main focus here is on word processing, take a look at AbiWord. I like notepad++ for simple word processing and editing simple scripts. Super small but not shy on features.

Solve : Windows 98 --Secure mode--Lost password?

Answer»

I went to reboot my compputer, which has Windows 98 installed, and duiring the Set-Up stage, I received a message "Computer is in secure mode--Enter PASSWORD" I have been using this computer for 6 years and this is the very FIRST time this occurred. HELP!!
Well, you need to be more specific with this problem.

If you're rebooting your computer which *already* had Win98 installed on it, it shouldn't be rebooting into the "Set-Up Mode" (I assume you mean Windows Setup?).

If this isn't it, what exactly are you talking about? Product name? Splash screen? Know if any extra peripherals (like Centurion Guard or something) are installed? Any third-party disklockers?

I'd be more than happy to help if I knew what to help with.

For now, all I can suggest is that immediately after you turn your computer on, start pressing "F8" - this should kick you into SAFE Mode. You should be able to at LEAST poke around then and see what's up. If that's not even possible, well...get back to me.You could also TRY just hitting Enter when prompted for a password.

Solve : Problems with opening WMV file?

Answer»
I have a serious problem with opening one WMV FILE. When I try to OPEN it with Windows media player, I became the following error message:
"A Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) component encountered a problem. If you are trying to use a file that you obtained from an online store, try going to the online store and getting the appropriate usage rights."

I cannot play the movie with any other program – I became error messages with all video players.
What can I do?
It sounds like the file is protected with DRM. Do you have the appropriate license to view the file? I.e. have you bought the file from a online store? No, I haven't bought it from an online store, but I downloaded it using eMule. Although it really seems that it is protected file.
Can be something done to play it?I doubt you'll get the file to play

There are ways of removing DRM but thats up to you if you want to research it further, as peer-to-peer file sharing is illegal (in my country anyway) ... peer-to-peer file sharing is illegal - Plus it destroys your pc - PM for SAFE DOWNLOAD sites....

You could try running it with VLC, the only other thing is to break the DRM "Which this site does not condone"

Answer»

Love this website by the way but I cudnt find an answer anywhere and I need help with this one.

My boss has tried to send 413 large photos attached to an email in outlook express and her computer has given up, outlook exp won't open now without freezing everything. I tried disconnecting her from the network so that it wouldnt try to send the email in the hope that would stop it freezing so i could just delete it but that didn't work, as I say as soon as I open outlook express it just stops.

Any ideas what I can do to get rid of this email?Run in safe mode ! open outlook delete that way..

To enter safe mode hit F8 when the computer starts up ! I just did what you said and now I can't log back into her account! It says her password is wrong (its not) and when I log in on another profile hers doesnt SHOW up on the users/accounts bit!!!!!! I cannot just have deleted my bosses account on her computer! Need even more help now!!!!That's not because you entered safe mode (safe mode does not just delete email accounts )......
