All right, I'm going to preface this with a little info so that the most OBVIOUS questions can be ruled out (Like whether the DVD itself is bad). I was running Windows 7 and used to watch DVDs using Windows Media Player. Never had any issues. I've been getting notifications for months that I can upgrade to Windows 10 for free and I've been ignoring them because everything works (I should say "worked" I suppose), and I didn't plan to upgrade my OS until I bought a new computer in a year or two. A few days ago I got home from work and had a notification that my computer was going to upgrade to Windows 10 and the only option I had was several postponement duration options...no rejection option. It was late and I was going to bed in a couple of hours and didn't know if any of my programs would work properly in Windows 10 so I hit the 8 hour postponement option so that I could do more research when I had the time, such as on a weekend. Next day (Day before yesterday), I also got home from work late and again chose to hit the 8 hour postponement button so that I could wait until today to properly look into it. About 10 minutes later my computer restarted itself and began installing Windows 10 (I was not pleased at that) and the process took about an hour and a half and by the end of the process I was already in bed. My internet seems fine and most of my programs seem UNAFFECTED thus far, but today I tried playing a DVD and I'm having picture problems. It isn't the DVD because I've tried 5 DVDs, all of which I've recently watched. I used to use Windows Media Player, but it seems that in Windows 10, WMP doesn't play DVDs. It wants me to use Windows DVD Player. The DVDs play absolutely perfectly windowed as long as I keep the window to ~70% of my screen or less (Tried on both monitors with same result), but as soon as I maximize the window, go to full screen mode, or make the window too large the picture skips very frequently and makes the DVDs basically unwatchable (The skipping is erratic in frequency but I'd guess on average 2-3 skips every 10 seconds or so). There also doesn't seem to be a button to press within the program to adjust or even look at the program settings (I'm still looking into this), but I'm quite frustrated at this point. I should also point out that the audio is completely and totally unaffected. Anyone else experience anything like this or have any suggestions? I realize this is a little long winded but I wanted to include everything relevant, so thanks for taking the time to read through all of it.Blame Microsoft. The Redmond crowd have decided to 'push' you into getting Windows 10 even if you don't want it. But there are ways to prevent this and its possible to revert back to Windows 7. Bit the do not make it easy. On purpose.

I didn't like not having the option to decline. I firmly believe that "No" should be an option. I also think that 8 hours and 10 minutes shouldn't be synonymous...but thank you Microcoft. If I can't figure out a way to make this work within a reasonable timeframe (As it has flawlessly for 4+ years) I'll have to think twice about buying another Microsoft product. This is just stupid.

Edit: Still no luck on finding any sort of settings options to CHANGE on Windows DVD Player. Yes, stupid. A modern definition for 'stupid' is 'lacking moral sense' and this fills the bill. We may see Microsoft losing some ground. And they will not understand. 


To close any window in focus, use the keys alt+F4 and it should close. So fare they have not changed that.
Your frustration is understandable and I feel like I'm frustrated now myself, vicariously.

Windows 10 doesn't have any capability to play DVDs. It has Windows Media Player (or it's on my WIn10 systems so I think it comes with it), but they have actually removed the ability to play DVDs as far as I can tell. When you insert a DVD you have the option to go to the "Windows Store" where it appears there is a "Windows DVD Player" App that they actually want $14.99 for (unbelievable!)

My suggestion would be to dump the "App". I was actually going to go looking through it for options/settings but as mentioned they want $14.99 for a very basic DVD Player "app".

Anyway, My personal preference for playing DVDs and most videos is either VLC Media Player or Media Player CLASSIC Home Cinema. Both of which are Free and they have more features and capabilities.

Just to choose one here, For Media Player Classic, You can play a DVD by selecting File->Open DVD/BD... And then navigating to and choosing your DVD Drive .

You can also configure it to pop up automatically when you put a disc in. in MPC-HC View->Options takes you to the options dialog, and selecting the "Formats" option in the left-side, you come to the options for file associations and DVD/CD's etc. Changing associations requires Admin so you'll have to click the "Run as Administrator" option. From there you can tick the "DVD" option in the lower right, within a group labelled "Autoplay".

Now if you insert a DVD disc, Windows 10 will say you have new options for playing DVDs and if you click the notification, MPC-HC will be an option in the list. Selecting it will allow MPC-HC to fire up and start playing the DVD, and going forward if you put a DVD Movie in the drive it will automatically launch MPC-HC and play the movie going forward.

I've had no issues playing DVD movies in MPC-HC for quite a number of years, and that success has extended to Windows 10. If you decide to give it a try hopefully it won't have the same issues you've seen with the DVD Player App.




I've thought of and have used VLC in the past, but I've had an issue with it for a few years. The picture freezes completely between 22-24 minutes of run time...the audio continues but as soon as you mouse over it the program completely shuts down and disappears. Nothing I've tried has remedied the situation. I'll definitely look into MPC-HC.Starting to sound more and more like the drive...is this a laptop ?No, it's a desktop. And the VLC issue is exactly the same whether I'm using it to play a DVD or a file off of my hard drive, but that's a separate issue I can live with since I don't use VLC very often. The DVDs played fine for 4 years and only started to have issues after the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Not one problem before that, and it does play DVD's perfectly if they're windowed and the window is small enough.Windows 10 (I'd have happily stayed with 7 if I wasn't forced to upgrade).

Looking for a free alternative to Sandboxie if anyone knows of one. My one friend wants to run 2 copies of a game on same system like I'm doing. I'm doing it through a virtual machine for my second copy running in a Windows XP SP3 environment, but they dont have the same LUXURY. The game will not run 2 instances of itself on the same system unless the 2nd copy of the game is running in a Virtual or completely isolated sandbox so that it DOESNT detect the first copy running.

I tried simple methods of making this work by changing the name of the EXE etc, but the resource target is the same which breaks this method from working and its HARD coded so unable to redirect the 2nd instances resources.

The game is a free to play game so nothing illegal with running 2 copies of the same game. And each instance of the game is logged onto with a different account to control 2 different characters. I was running 2 computers to do this, but have since implemented the virual machine method on a system with dual displays and just move mouse back and forth between the windows of the actual machine and the virtual machine and run this way.

If the only method is to run a Virtual Linux environment within Windows 8.1 ( friends laptops OS version ) and set up WINE to run the game intended for Windows I could do that too, but unaware of any Linux based sandbox options that exist for running on a Windows based machine.

With a resource target location hard coded and no option to change that, it will only work for 2 instances on same system if they are isolated.I don't have more info on this... My memory fails me on this one.

Today i upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 because i was having a problem of *Document*.exe Incorrect Image that didn't let me open stuff like Skype, iTunes and it got to Adobe flash player too so i looked for a solution, and one thing i saw it's that upgrading to Windows 10 could HELP, and it did... But cut off a head and 2 more will replace it. Now my Pc don't wanna detect my headphones (They work fine) And it just shows a Speaker symbol with an X where you should be able to LOWER the volume and stuff and when i click it it starts looking for problems and then 'reparing' them.
I don't really KNOW what i can do, i read that updating the audio driver can help but when i try to updating it it says that it FOUND the software but a problem appeared when trying to downloading it.

For some reason, on my computer hard drive none of my files are opening with the content. it shows that there is a file size, but its not opening correctly.

Any idea what i can do to fix this?A little more information would help. Do you mean you can't OPEN ANYTHING? pics documents etc... or you mean you can't open programs like IE and notepad?

What has changed? Do you have a current antivirus program on your machine? Yes I cannot open anything, most of them are  MP4 files which have bee created  by us. But there are a few PDF files. I have OPENED them in different software but still not having any luck.

 I had a ARCHIVED copy of my email on the local system. Due to some problem my C: drive of the system got corrupted and i had already taken one copy of my archive folder. After reinstalling the OS and Lotus Notes now i have kept the archive copy in the same folder DATA\Archive\batabasename. Now when i try to access the archive it gives message a " DATABASE is corrupted --- cannot allocate space""
I tried to move the archived copy of the DB to server and applied following commands but non of them worked..
Load compact databasename -c
Load updall databasename -c
Fixup
I have Lotus version 7

The reference above suggests that the file may have been infected with a virus that your computer received. However, that is not certain. You should d a full virus scan.

Hey im trying to set up aster V7. IVE GOT the seperate workspaces but they arent able to connect to the internet.  I use a laptop as a wireless adapter btw.  if ANYBODY knows anything about this it would be greatly appreciated if you TOLD me.

I have a hand full of thumb drives and WOULD like to know which perform the best of the pile for use for running Linux on some systems without hard drives. In the past I have just grabbed a 8GB stick and made it a Linux bootable stick. But I figured why not try to pick out the better performing stick for this use this go around. I am upgrading from Linux Mint 17.1 to 17.3. I install Linux to the thumb drive and then allocate the remaining unused space for saving data and changes so that its more than just a Live Distro, that I can install updates and programs and save personal data. Using a generic no name 8GB now that i picked up cheap somewhere. A friend at work also pointed me to a russian made one that is safe that he used years ago when wanting to use ReadyBoost on his system and he has a hand full of thumb drives. I tried ReadyBoost years ago myself and didnt see any real benefit to it myself. If there was any benefit using it it was unnoticeable.  He pointed me to http://usbflashspeed.com/ which plots out the Read/Write Speed of USB Flash drives as well as it also works for Hard Drives internal as well as external USB hard drives and SSDs with different size blocks of data transferred.

Attached pics of the 750GB SATA II Hard Drive Benchmark and the 12 year old 164.7GB SATA I Hard Drive that is in use on this system.

Also I found a Team Brand USB 8GB in my pile that has a 20MB/s Read speed and 7MB/s Write speed so I will use that for Linux Mint 17.3. The others I had were around 12 to 16MB/s Read Speed and 4 to 6MB/s Write Speed. Also just for curiosity I ran the benchmark on a 256MB USB Iomega stick that I have had now for almost 13 years and that is a very slow 1MB/s by 1MB/s Read and Write Speed. I have been using it these days mainly for playing MP3 in my new 2016 model car that has a USB port to the car stereo and its perfect for MP3 play in the car. Other than that a 256MB USB stick is just about worthless given its limited capacity and looking at benchmark its extremely slow in comparison to modern USB sticks.

Gonna try the CrystalDiskMark and see how that one is too now.

What does the green LINE mean?   Vegan ?Green is the Read Speed, Red is the Write Speed.OK. Some interpretation please. Does this mean that reading between about 16 kB and 1.5 MB is the optimum range?  What is being measure? File size.
No, it says  the file is 100 KB. So how can this graph help me?  What is the thing that varies?  Size of thumb dire? That can't be, nobody uses 16KB drives anymore.

The write speed dips at about 12KB. So I should avoid doing a write at 128KB?
I find the chart hard to understand. Do thumb drives really vary that much in speed?

Curious minds need to know.   It is the chunk size being used to read/write from and to a 100MB file. It can vary at different sizes due to the Drive's MEMORY controller, I presume.

I have a small program which is just an .exe
All it does is make a cosmetic change on my computer but in needs to remain running for that change to stay in effect.
When it is running however it has both a window and an icon on the taskbar.

I would like some advice on how to make the program run INVISIBLY so that i can set it to START with my computer and have it run in the background.

My computer is running Windows 7.
So far I tried to make it into a service as I was told such for do what I wanted but I FAILED at that endeavor. I have created a service which runs at start up but it seems to do nothing. It does say 'stopped' in the task manager however.
A way to fix that or another way of PUTTING the program out of sight would be truly wonderful.

You could try starting it from a Visual Basic Script using the Run method with the correct parameters. Lots of guidance on Stack Exchange etc.

I would like to download Microsoft Office Home & Student, and was wondering if there was a way of downloading it to a CD or DVD or flashdrive instead of letting it install directly from the download.  I'd prefer a CD, but they don't seem to sell them anymore, instead they have Key Cards.  Has anyone done this?
Thank you......I havent done this, but you COULD probably find the download in the DEFAULT download directory for your browser and burn that file to disc. Then run that file on computer you want to install to. You will probably still require a connection to microsoft server to activate the installation though so, the NEED to burn to disc only has the benefit of a reinstallation not having to redownload it, however it probably wont work for an OFFLINE installation I am guessing.

So recently I bought an old favorite game of mine on Steam, Tales of Symphonia, and I’ve been poking around the game files trying to access the game's sound files.  I discover they are contained within several AWB archives.  So I extract from them and now I’m stuck with several folders, each containing thousands of tiny bin files (though no cues) which in turn contain the audio files (most of them single lines of dialogue.)  Now I’ve spent several days looking up various ways to access these files, burning them to a virtual cd, converting them to isos, extracting from the bins DIRECTLY, but oddly none of them seem to work, (USUALLY displaying some type of error message when I try to convert or extract.)  I had nearly given up when I tried something no-one suggested, I tried to simply convert the bin files into mp3s directly using Total Audio MP3 Converter 3, and, lo and behold, I get a perfectly playable mp3 from the game’s bin files.  Now here’s the problem, unless I buy Total Audio MP3 Converter 3, I only get half of the bin file converted.  So now I can get mp3s from the game audio, but I effectively only get half of the track (the audio stops mid sentence or song.)  I’ve been trying out other free mp3 converters with mixed results: MANY (Freemake Audio Converter, AVS-Audio-Converter) can’t convert bin files, while others (MP3 Audio Converter) can but have garbled or clipped results.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Obviously since I’m dealing with upwards of 2000 files per archive I need something that can convert more than 1 file at a time.
Game Data has often been STORED in "bin" files for decades. It's not an established file format and is used for arbitrary data (like .DAT).

Usually, when a game has music it will use some proprietary format or do some wacky thing where it flips bytes around to prevent it being easily made playable outside the game.

It might be as simple as simply renaming the file to mp3.

In this case though, If the conversion tool is able to convert them then the data in the BIN files must be a recognizable sound format.

You might be able to open the BIN files using something like Audacity. It might be able to recognize the format. You can use that to apply a series of functions to a group of files. I used it to make an MP3 copy of my Music library which is in FLAC format so I could put them on my MP3 Player, for example, without explicitly converting each file. (You'd want to look up setting up a "Chain")
I Just tried importing into audacity.  All that came up is static.  Let me include a link to a sample of one of the bin files in case anyone wants to experiment with it.

I have XML backup fills of  my WORDPRESS blog. It gos back years. So when I try to load it into an empty WordPress install, I get an error message.  It said the file was too long. It is. It is about 4 MB, the limit is 2 MB.
So, my question is -- How do you cut the number on entries in an XML . I tried to delete what I thought were entries, the but editor did not work the way I though it wold. The file is still large.
Yeah, I am dummy on XML. I have no idea of how it works.

I would open it in an text editor such as notepad and then carefully remove only what is not necessary. Then save the file to a different FOLDER as to not overwrite your original file. Or start off with a copy of the original file in a safe location so you dont overwrite the master 4MB file. Im kind of curious as to how it grew to an unsupported size. But I have seen other instances of databases and files exceeding their supported size before. Sometimes it can be prevented I guess I am saying. XML files are basically text files with text but saved in XML format. Looking at them if you have looked at HTML before you might see similarities between them to make it more straight FORWARD to follow tags in them and whats necessary and what is not necessary that can be removed. For 4MB you have a HUGE XML file as for it takes a lot of text to get to that size. If its 40 pages long you need to removed about 20 pages of it to fall within the 2MB.

 Hope this info helps.XML editors tend to complicate things when ti comes to editing, and are more useful (IMO) to find and navigate the structure of an XML file.
In this case, you should be fine just using a text editor. There is a "" tag, and inside that tag you can find "" tags. You should be able to delete any tag entries you want.

Another APPROACH could be to make a copy of the file that deletes everything and leaves a empty "channel" tag, then you can cut half the tags from the other file into it, splitting your backup file practically in half.Thank you both. Yes, I made backups and search all my drives for any other instances of the files. This problem, I found, comes with the WordPress exporter. It does not warn thou that the output file will become too large. You have the option to save posts between some dates. Doing that, one would not get moister size files. I was saving everything I ever wrote, along with all the spam I did not remove.

{Note: It is the importer that puts a limit of 2 MB on the XML  file.}

 In the database item is a post will all of it's attributes. Kinda looks like the registry, but it is not.  After a couple of tests offline, I finally exported and imported the right amount of data to re populate my blog.

This happened because I did not pay my web host account on time. So they just wiped out my whole site. It would not matter If I was making backups more often.

On newer flatscreen you might be able to STRETCH to get rid of dead area ( BLACK borders ) by changing the aspect ratio setting if AVAILABLE. Stretching it may make for DISTORTION and out of square XY scaling though. I have some 30 year old games that are best played on an old VGA monitor for example if your talking about a game pre 640x480 days such as a game with CGA graphics etc.My game is Fifa 12 but I can't change the resolution because the game crashes if it becomes higher and plus when I played it used to fit screen but after I deleted it and installed it again this problem happened.Did you install this game from the original disc or steam DOWNLOAD and install or other? Have you updated your video drivers to latest? Which video card are you using, there night be a bug fix etc?

You certainly could learn how to do it yourself but don't expect to be able to build something big like this very quickly, it takes a lot of time and practice before you'll be proficient enough to build a complete system like this.  To build something like this at the very least you would need to learn HTML, Javascript and CSS to do all the frontend stuff and then some sort of server side language such as Python, PHP, Ruby.etc in order to handle all the actual application logic.  You would then need some sort of database to store everything.  That's the thing with web development, while it's a very useful thing to learn, you end up having to learn a bunch of different technologies before you can build anything particularly useful.This project is pretty involved and will be costly. Would you be accepting online orders with credit cards as well in which you also have to DEAL with PCI Compliance etc? To me this looks like a costly very high risk project with limited returns since your unable to code it all yourself and there are already processes in place for fund raisers that work and are solid.

If this was on shark tank the tv show and I was a billionaire shark, I'd pass it up and invest elsewhere. Please dont take that the wrong way, but this looks to be a very risky investment with high probability for failure. If you chose to continue with this I wish you the best of luck and success. But just sharing my OPINION on this.

Less risky way about going with this would be if you were able to code this up and sell off the entire project to someone else who wanted to assume the risk in its implementation as well as continued cost of operation and security.

Hello. So after all the pesky adds to upgrade to windows 10. I decided to finally do it. So it installed but upon booting itnup. It would KEEP starting then restarting. So I did a reset and during that mid reset. The computer turned off. When I turned it on I got that "no Operating system found, please remove any drives without an operating system" MESSAGE. So i put Linux or Ubuntu on a DVD disc (because I don't have the key to download windows for free and I also lost the recovery disc it came with). And the computer refused to boot from the dvd! It's a Samsung i7 9 series I bought back in 2011. It came with windows 7 and I by no means have the same box. Also I cannot even get to any recovery portion to find any more about my machine. I may try to install that windows 7 you mentioned. But the issue is my computer is oddly not reading the disc when I put it in there That model is an Ultra book with a touch screen.

it did not had errors previously when partitioned for first time and then i formatted the computer and need to repartition.

I am trying to reinstall the software for my mouse which is a Perixx MX 2000 11. The problem is it won't create a folder in Program files (x86) which is the folder it's telling me it will install the software to. When I try to reinstall this software I also get a message saying that the driver is already installed and that I will have to uninstall first. When I try to uninstall like it says, it then tells me there are something left over that the uninstall didn't delete. I'm stumped not knowing what has been left over though because it doesn't say. I have tried Revo uninstaller, deleting left overs using Regedit, by serching Perixx, but it just seems I can't fully uninstall the mouse software or reinstall it so that it CREATES a folder on Program (x86). I also know it's not fully uninstalled from a previous install, because there is a screen that flashes up as soon as I boot my computer and I see that it is the Perixx software screen.

I have tried this on another Windows 10 machine and a folder is created, so I know there's a problem somewhere. Both PC's are Windows 10. I did have it working on the problem computer at one stage, the only reason it stopped working on this computer is that I was going to buy another mouse, so I uninstalled the software. I then decided later I would keep this mouse and now I'm trying to reinstall this software. I also tried creating a folder on a different HDD when installing just to see if it would atleast create a folder, but it won't even create an install folder on a different HDD. I would go with your gut feeling about a new mouse...i agree another mouse would CERTAINLY narrow down the possibilities.. and also be aware of the customisation VALUES that can be changed in the software that COMES with the mouse.

i looked in the main settings to make my own custom changes which i occasionally forget when changing to a different game. main setting > click any of the 6 drop down menus listed on the left. they open values for all types of clicking, single click, double click, etc. this may need checking out. 

also, administrative privileges. R/click to gain ADMIN privileges. lastly, any untowrd issue may indicate an infection. run a scan with the AV to be sure.

My wife's computer with Windows 10 RECENTLY prompted a download of AMD's Radeon Crimson. Ever since the download was performed there have been more prompts for both Radeon Raptr (which seems to have been included with the Crimson) and Gaming Evolved, also a prompt to update Radeon Crimson. LATELY the prompts occur for Raptr several times throughout a day. We originally thought the AMD Crimson was an updated version for the AMD GPU on the computer. Neither my wife or myself play any online games and or not inclined to do so.
My question then concerning this software is--is the Crimson an updated version that enhances the overall GPU performance of the computer, or is it meant strictly for gaming performance?
If the Crimson is not improving performance for the computer's graphics sans games, how do I remove and delete the software for it and the Raptr?
Any advice or information concerning this software is apprecated.

"AMD Gaming Evolved" is a client that connects to Raptr. Probably also useless to most people.

Crimson is the name they attach to their driver package and related software. Previously, it was called Catalyst. (I don't know where they come up with these names. I nominate "Exothermal" for their NEXT rebranding).

After reading over you question, I will give a short ans a long answer.
Short answer, No.
Long Answer,  macrium reflectis a good way to backup you system so that you will have a copy of everything. But this does not create network share.

So ho does one make  network share?
When you copy FILES and folders you want  copies of everything except the files that are parts needed by the operating stem itself.  So the network share shall be a folder that contains the materiel you want to share.  In Windows you have the option to  make a a folder a share over the local network. This may be called a public folder.

It looks like this is not the software I need for what I want to do. What I am trying to do is to have a copy of my machine on a server so if my machine has a hardware failure I can fix it. After, download a complete copy from the server and do a restore.


 OK. What you want can be done with backup software. But there are some details you need to investigate.
A few PCs can be set to boot from the network. Likely yours does not have that feature. The alternative is to have a CD or USB drive to boot the computer if the hard drive failed and was replaced with a blank drive.
The CD or USB drive must have a program the can read the special format used to copy the image of the operating system and the programs and data all in one integrated data set. The is often called an "image" of the hard drive.
To use macrium reflect  that way, you must first read over the documentation and practice on a spare computer. Personally I have used macrium reflect for a COUPLE of years, but I would never tell somebody it is easy to understand. But with study and practice, you can do it.
Here are the two things to worry about:
Q.  How to you start a computer without an operating system?
A.  Change the BIOS to boot first from a USB device that has recovery software.
Q.  How do you get the image that was placed on a network share?
A    If needed, the image must be transferred to a portable hard drive .
These are the things That I have found to be areas of concern.

BTW:, some portable hard drives come with software. 

The Paid ver. of Acronis True Image will do a clone backup to a Network share....

I know of none of the Free ones that will do this...and i've tested them all.Additionally if its a Windows XP system, your could buy Ghost 2003 off of ebay etc and this also supports sending images over network. I created a bootable floppy with NDIS2 Intel Pro100 Driver and then migrated an image of this floppy to CD so that I could boot a system up off this bootable CD which gives it a static IP ADDRESS of 130.0.0.2 ( which i designated when creating bootable media ) for the system requesting image, and the system serving up the image over the LAN is 130.0.0.1.

Note: You need a bootable disc or disk for each Network Adapter driver that you chose to support. Its a manual process for an advanced Ghost 2003 user/admin. I have two of these one for Intel Pro 100 and another for older 3Com NIC. One trick I did was had a Intel Pro 100 PCI NIC, and I would install it temporarily to be able to have Ghost 2003 network support as well as for a fleet of systems at a prior work place we had corporate licensing of Ghost 2003 and I bought 50 good used Intel Pro 100 PCI network adapters off of ebay and populated all the workstations with this additional NIC. When a system needed to be rebuilt by image, I would move the LAN cable over to the Intel Pro 100 NIC, pop in the CD, boot the CD, and request the image to push to hard drive from the image server.

Later we ended up just going with RIS for many builds instead of using Ghost because all the many images for each workstation for custom configurations was eating up a lot of space back 10+ years ago when hard drive space came at a cost at 40GB images and hundreds of workstations.Thanks for everyone in put.

Make sure to "verify" the image after creating it....
One thing to think about when making a system image and saving it over the network, it will take awhile (HOURS) to make the backup and take awhile to do the restore.  Whole disk images are generally multi-gigabyte in size, lots of data to send over the network.

I prefer to use an external drive connected directly to the machine being backed up or restored.

I searched before I asked this question, I must be a bad searcher because I didn't find my answer.  Over the years as I've been on this forum, I have noticed a lot of you recommend AVG or Avast as being free.  I installed AVG and it keeps telling me I have x number of days left before it runs out.  If it's free, what am I running out of?  Do I have to reinstall it every 30 days?  Or is there an antivirus you like better?  I was using Windows Defender and finally got my new computer and put AVG on here.  I haven't had any problems except for the popups telling me I'm running out of time.
You are probably using a 30days trial of the PAID version of AVG, and after 30 days it runs out.
AVG has a free version. I have a user that can sign into skype for business, message other USERS, start meetings ETC., but when she tries to joins a meeting using an EMAILED link, the page opens but Skype does not connect. In order to get into the meeting, she has to have someone invite her to the meeting before it starts. I had a computer with Vista and I finally put it in computer heaven.  I bought a new Dell, Windows 10, I-5-4460 CPU 3.20 GHz, RAM 8.00 GB, 1T something.  I had Microsoft Office 2007 on it and when the place I took it to for them to put all my old stuff on the new computer, the Microsoft Office 2007 GOT lost in the workings.  Since it is so expensive to buy, I have been looking on ebay for a Microsoft Office program.  My question is (since there are so many of them), are they legitimate?  I saw Office 2010 for $29.99, Office 2010 for three computers which said something about they copy them and are packaged to ship without damage, but not the same Microsoft packaging for $39.99, I saw some with Master Key Code included, and since I'm not all that computer smart, I thought I should get someone else's opinion before I buy one.  I really can't afford the $100.00+ ones as I'm in remission from pancreatic cancer and doing really WELL, except I get LITTLE glitches every now and then I have to pay for (like right now I have become anemic and have to do weekly iron shots), so I always have these stupid medical bills.  If I'm looking, what should I look for in the description, or should I not look on ebay at all?  Thanks for your HELP!

Try Libre' Office...Free and 100% compatible with MS Office.Microsoft set the pricing on Office, if someone is selling it ridiculously cheap they are going to be selling a fake copy.  Always buy stuff like that from a reputable retailer like Amazon (being careful to get it DIRECTLY from Amazon and not a marketplace seller) or from the Microsoft store directly.

If money is tight the other option is Office 365 which is Microsoft's subscription service which you can get for $9.99 a month, of course you never get the software outright, if you don't pay for a month the software won't work, but it doesn't require the initial outlay that buying a copy of office outright would.

Where did the copy of Office 2007 come from?  Can you not reinstall that?

Yeah, Office 2000 is too old to really be useful nowadays.  At that point you would be better off with LibreOffice.

I have Win 7 with integrated graphics, AMD. All has been well until I recently have noticed that on some sites , viewing video clips, I see a thin red/blk line right in the center of it...not my ENTIRE screen of the monitor. Looks like the only way you can GET FREE MBAM is to install a 14 day trial of the Premium version. Should I disable Win 10 Defender during this PERIOD or disable MBAM or can they run together? I ask because my SIL's new PC seems to be restarting for no apparent reason. I have DISABLED MBAM (I think) but maybe I missed a setting that is causing an issue. I am having an annoying and a frequent problem when I save files in Corel Draw 8.
The problem is that many a times I save a file, a cannot reopen either the original as well the BACKUP file. I get a message - error reading .cdr file.
I use winXP as OS.
Could be DUE to HDD failure.  Go to then manufactures site for the HDD and DOWNLOAD and INSTALL their scanning software.

Try saving the file to an external DEVICE and see if it can open that one or on another system.

I am supporting a customer who has a Server 2003 SBS server.
We recently migrated this customer to a new Exchange 2013 server running on a Server 2012 server.
Some of the mailboxes weren't exported to .PST files before this migration was done and the old Server 2003/Exchange 2003 SBS was demoted.
We still have a copy of the Exchange 2003 .EDB file from the old server and have been using a utility called Kernel for Exchange Server (see the screenshot) which is able to extract individual email accounts and place the contents into Outlook .PST files.
The problem is that there is a very small percentage of EMAILS in two USER's email Inboxes and SENT items folder that are in Chinese (instead of English).
This business doesn't have any Chinese employees and have never sent any emails in Chinese.
What can be done to fix this issue?
Please let me know if any further information is needed.

i left my PC on when i went to answer the door - when i came back my cat was lying on the keyboard and the screen now has an inch of BLACK border.
the entire screen seems to have shrunk.

thank you. I have seen this when widescreen resolution is applied to older style square displays. Have you gone in and VERIFIED your screen resolution is CORRECT. I use 1024 x 768 for my older square flatscreens, sometimes the HIGHER resolution for square displays with more modern applications that have a heavier density of detail to fit.Did you re-boot ? ?yes.
checked control panel for proper resolution, etc.  everything checks out.

i was hoping the cat hit a letter/number on the keyboard and that
that is what caused it.  it still hasn't cleared.

It is an EARLY version of the Amazon Fire. It runs under  the Amazon variant of Android.
But Amazon CALLS it O 5, Whatever that means.
Anyway,I don't use it much. So I don't know how to clean up the junk they have on it. I got it for my wmy wife, She is not going to be able to use it until the number if items on the screen only reflects things she wants. Most of the stuff is so pointless and just clutters up things. Of the 12 icons on the home screen, only three are meaningful. The rest are some things only a child could like.
Any help would be welcome. Please.

Under settings you should have ability to remove PROGRAMS. I am running Android 4.3 and my phone with 2.5 x 3.5 inch screen was cluttered with all the BLOATWARE that came with it. I removed a bunch of stuff to free up storage, and the desktop AREA. Of the 4GB storage I was able to free up about 400MB, and then add 3 games there were like 30MB each. I am guessing tablet should be the same as the phone.

The last couple of weeks when I log on,  I have been getting a panel labeled "WinZip Driver Updater"  WITHOUT my permission they run a scan and say I have 15 out of date updates.  Is this a liget or is it some kind of scam?  I can't get rid of the panel.   Any information will be APPRECIATED.    Bob
 You can uninstall WinZip Driver Updater from your computer by using the Add/Remove Program feature in the Window's CONTROL Panel. If you need guidance on how to do this, reply with details of what operating system you are using (e.g. XP, VISTA, Windows 7)

So I just started an IT support position at a company and one of the first big problems I have, I have no idea how to solve it. I have been looking and trying things for days. Here it goes...

They had this program written just for them. You put in a model number and quantity and things, then it accesses an Access database, and it will print out a page with the information on it. They only use this program from 1 computer and it is basically all that it does. Apparently one day they WENT to go do the same thing they always do, and when they go to print you get a Runtime Error 3421: Data type conversion error. While looking it up it looks like people have had this issue while making changes in their code and what not but I don't even have access to the source code. I don't know programming anyway. They can't remember if they have ever gotten this error code before but when they did get error codes, it would be because they wrote a letter or something instead of a number in one of the boxes. Normally they would just go into the access database and delete the mistake and it would work again. My boss said he did that this time and it is still not working.

The program and the FILE is on a shared drive coming from the server.

ALSO, when I go into the Access database they are using, I get an error saying that it cannot access the reference to "mail.ocx" version 1.0. When I go into the references it says it is MISSING: TTC mail control or something like that. It says the files location is C:\WINNT\system32. I guess that would be on the server and since it is coming from the shared server it recognizes the C:\ drive on the server. I am not even sure if these are related at all but I thought I would mention it. They don't know if that error was there before or not. I don't know how to fix that error either. I try to uncheck the box and see what happens but I am using Access 2007 and it says that this database was made on an older access so I can't make design changes.

Let me know if you have any more questions I have been banging my head on this for a while. I would love if someone can figure this out!

RobThis maybe text in a numerical field in the database. Once entered the field is locked. You will need someone to open the DB in access and look for the fields that are numerical and see if they can find some BAD data.

Is the PC in question running Windows XP?
What is the make and model?
If the problem is with the custom program, it is  unlikely you can fix it in a short time. Lack of documentation makes it out of reach.

I bought a brand new Dell desktop, Windows 10, Intel Core i5-4460, CPU 3.20 Ghz, 3201 Mhz, 8 GB, in mid-November.  It had the Home Premium version on it.  It was doing fine except for Facebook.  I finally decided to contact Dell to see if they could tell me what is wrong.  They had me on the phone for 2-1/2 hours, plus had control of the computer for a total of about eight hours.  They indicated to me there is a SETTING that is not working with Facebook and the more they "looked" at everything, they decided my computer needed to be reset.  Okay, I had to SAVE all my INFO from the computer, which I have a Seagate external hardrive, and we did that.  Then they started on the reset.  It took so long for them to do it, I told the lady on the phone it was getting late (I'd already been on the phone with them earlier two or three times that day) and we were just going to have to let the computer do its thing.  The next morning I came in to see what was going on.  Computer was in sleep mode and I moved mouse around to wake it up.  When I did, the screen was doing strobe lights for me.  Color flashing everywhere.  I couldn't do anything but manually shut it off.  I turned it back on and everything seemed okay.  To make a longer story short, they couldn't synch me with Facebook so they put Google Chrome on here, which Facebook does work on, I cannot do some of the things I could before with Facebook, on either IE or Chrome, like forward a picture to someone who is not on FB.  Never had that problem before.  I get my email through Comcast and I look at it there.  What I don't want, I delete, what I want to keep I open Windows Live 2012 and it goes into that.  Now no pictures show up on it unless I click on a tab at the top that says show pictures.  That's a new one.  And to top it off, I don't know if I have what I paid for as it has always said I have Home Premium, now it just says Home.  Is there a difference?  I want to get what I paid for before I go too much farther with this machine.  There are a few other little minor issues I think I can figure out, or at least live with, but all-in-all these are the ones I'm questioning.

There is no Home Premium version of Windows 10. There is Home and Pro. The last version of Windows to have a "Home Premium" edition was Windows 7.

It sounds like they upgraded you to Windows 10.

The way you've described it, the AMOUNT of incompetence on their end is beyond comical.Hard to believe Dell has help like that.
