Hi, I've always been wondering, should I enable the 'scan ARCHIVES' OPTION in my AV? Does it make much of a difference?
Thanks much.If you download or store significant numbers of archives (zip, rar, 7z etc) then you probably should enable it. As for MAKING a "difference", then if you mean a difference in your computer's performance, or the TIME taken to do an antivirus scan, I should say it would not make much difference at all, and I'd be surprised if you noticed any CHANGE. Of course, if you had malware inside an archive, and the AV found it, that would be a big difference which you had achieved. (the difference between finding and not finding a virus). Try it and see how you get on.

Do you guys know any good media players that allow you to crop and zoom in? In my OLD Computer I had the NERO Showtime 4 which gave you that option. But apparently the RECENT Nero player doesn't offer it anymore.

Do you guys know of any media players that give you that option?

Then by zooming in on that box I was able to create, the video played with just that section blown up to fit the screen.


The newer Nero video players don't offer that anymore, and I was just curious if you guys know of any other media players that give you that zoom in option when you playback a video.

I just purchased a 5TB Western Digital HD. As I was on the INITIAL Windows setup screen where it asks you where you would like to install the OS there were 2 seperate partitions just over 2TB each. Why did the manufacturers do that? And is there any way to combine them into one partition without reformatting? One of the things steering me away from WD HDD's recently...i despise manuf. takin liberties with hardware i'm buying.

I'd visit the site and see why for that model #...if unacceptable then return it for a Seagate.I disagree.
There is good reason to limit a PARTURITION to about 2 TB.

As far as I'm aware,New Internal HDDs come unpartitioned, regardless of manufacturer or size. Was this a refurbished unit, or perhaps an external Drive?

2TB is the maximum partition size when using an MBR Partition table. Having volumes larger than 2TB requires the use of the Guid Partition Table (GPT), which includes a number of caveats particularly with regard to OS support.

Hi! I had the misfortune of moving from Outlook Express to Outlook yesterday (I know, old software and all that, but it worked for me perfectly). As a result I have/am experiencing a few problems. (1) I can not import ALL the Inbox from Outlook Express to Outlook - it only does about 40 messages out of a few hundred, ALTHOUGH the Sent Items and DELETED Items (both having a few hundred messages) import with no problems. How to I handle this: in Outlook Express I was at least able to create/copy/move the .dbx files around, but there doesn't seem to be anything like this in Outlok. (2) When I receive mail in Outlook Express Inbox with an ATTACHMENT, I can't save it 'normally' - when I right click on the attachment icon, I don't get the usual 'Save As', but the same 'Pane' etc that I get if I right click on the message header - it's as if the function is not there (?). Can someone with more experience than me (that should be easy) in Outlook provide some hints?

I have the Kodak sports play cam. Its a couple of years old and it takes great pictures and video. I have small video and some pics on the memory card, that I would like to transfer to my pc via the software that came with it. It has been doing that all along, but recently, I am not able to. I also have a reader on my laptop, and its the same story. I have no problem seeing them on playback on the cam. Kodak does not support them any longer. Does anyone have any idea why I cannot transfer them now? I even deleted a couple of files thinking maybe the card is full, with the same results.I have a CAMERA that failed the same way. The USB communications was the first to fail and I THOUGHT it was cable or dirty connection but that wasnt it. Mine has INTERNAL memory + a SD Card slot. When using it with SD Card slot stuffed with a SD Card I can save images/videos to that and pop it out and transfer thru the card reader in the computer in your situation though its not even working from SD Card to card reader and so I'd try a different SD Card if you have one.

 ADDITIONALLY there is an option in my camera to tell it to save by default to the SD Card vs internal 128MB memory. If you dont have the camera set correctly it will store on the internal memory if this camera has internal memory + SD Card Slot. I have continued to use my camera still able to charge thru USB and removing the SD Card each time I want to transfer images or videos now.

If this doesnt fix the issue then it looks like its time for a NEW camera. I have a feeling that its writing to internal storage and not the SD Card possibly in which you insert the card into the card reader and no images or videos are there. So format the card in the camera with the menu that should give this option and then take a few pictures and then remove card and see if the images are on there. If still not there then be sure the SD Card is the default storage location. And try again.

Older friend of mine who is not too savy with fixing computer problems when directed over phone would be BETTER off with me remoting into her computer to fix the problem. Problem is that CrossLoop that I use to use for helping people remotely for free is gone as seen at the link below. Anyone know of any software that will work like crossloop that is free and through normal port 80 etc so no router config needed?  Crossloop was great when it existed because you just needed to install the software on 2 computers and then the recipient to get connected was displayed a numeric key. They were able to tell you this key over the phone and then you were able to type in into crossloop on your computer and then they would permit you at their end to remote in in which once this was established you had full control of their computer to remote admin and fix problems.

I talked her through uninstalling and reinstalling a correct game and problem REMAINED. I then talked her through using a system restore point which goes back only to 3/13 and the problem remains at 3/13. I had her then create a different user account which she claims she is logged onto the new user account and still has the problem with appears to initially be corrupt profile data for a game, in which you can uninstall the game and reinstall and problem remains because the appdata game folder still contains the corrupt data so the game references this and malfunctions. The game stores data in the appdata folder of the user profile and I tried to help her to get there and tell her how to show hidden folders so I could manually have her dump the game cache data that is corrupt and she is unable to do this so I suggested that she create a new user account and start fresh. If she created a new user account and logged onto it the problem should be gone but it remains.

I then was going to have her create a system recovery set onto 2 USB thumb drives and then set the system back to factory build after first backing up her personal data to a 3rd thumb drive, but she is lost at this process. Without SEEING what she is seeing to direct her or have control myself, she is dead in the water with her laptop.

She lives in a nursing home and doesnt have ACCESS to adding a port forward to a router to allow a VNC connection etc, in addition to this being beyond her abilities.

So hoping there is a free or low cost service/software out there that she can download and install and allow for me to remote into her system and fix the problems for her?

three DAYS AGO my monitor was fine, now, vertically, it's only showing 2/3 of the site.

EXAMPLE:
if i am watching hulu.com my screen is filled with the program, but now the TOP 2/3 has the program but the bottom third shows the shows which are offered to watch.

i went to display in the control panel but can't FIND anything to switch.

does anyone know how how to FIX this ?

I have 4 ComboBoxes with dropdown CHOICES already in them. These ComboBoxes are dependent on each choice made. I need EXCEL to take the user to a specific cell based on the four choices they have selected. It maybe within the workbook but on ANOTHER sheet, or because of the size of the file, I may need to route them to another workbook based on their choices.

THANK you.You don't run 2 OSs at once. If you don't like Windows 10 within 30 days, you can go back to your previous OS install, the essential parts of which are saved. If you made an image backup before upgrading, you can revert at any TIME. Also you can make a setting in Windows Updates so that no update is installed unless you agree.

I tried too use EASYBCD too creat a dual boot, but, for some REASON not able too get it MADE like I able too.  I was told too use Visual BCD but, no idea how too use it too add the Window Loaders too the boot MENU

I UNINSTALLED windows update #KB3035583 as I was told that this update ATTACHED the Windows 10 upgrade icon & option to install it.  I still have that annoying popup icon when I start up.  Was it also on another update.  I am on Windows 7.

I am trying to use a free software, ispring to convert ppt with video to flash. I can convert the files but the videos don't play.  I have TRIED downloading a codec to FIX it but I don't KNOW a thing about codecs and if I have to make it TALK to the software somehow or how to use it to fix the problem.  Can ANYONE help?

First off I am new here and if this is not in the right area please feel free to suggest correction.

OK so here is the situation. The company I work for had used AS400 for a longtime to provide us with technical information and BREAKDOWNS of
our previously built units. Mid to heavy industrial technology, so it contained all the previous BOM's (bill of materials).

Anyway our problem is that certain people in our organization FAILED to listen to those who used it most frequently and have now shut down access to
the other program , our IT dept which is large had said well we have info on other systems blah blah you will be fine. Guess what day 1 was Thursday and
its a nightmare we cannot get what we need.   

So to cut a long story short the disks with the information on them are being returned to us Monday. Does anyone know if there is a way we can transfer this information to a single desktop then
access it either via an emulator or windows/dos environment either or that machine or network to our terminal group. I am sorry i am not a tech expert and I hope I have explained the situation enough for someone to suggest a solution.

EllieA nightmare for sure that they would pull the plug on the system with INABILITY to get it back up and running until maybe Monday when disks with the info are returned.

Just saying that a mess up this bad for companies I worked for in the past = termination of employment for those who carried out directly such a careless act without a Plan B to go back to how it was when Plan A is a failure.

Im at a loss as to how you will get by until the disks with the data are returned.

I use to work with a BOM system in the late 1990s for Rockwell Automation and it was a setup with VT Terminals and printing out a BOM on dot matrix printer for manufacturing of PCBs and assemblies. The system we had had to be run on that specific system. In a pinch if a terminal was dead I suppose you could hyperterm serial if a terminal was dead, but from what I'm reading on your problem, it sounds like they pulled the plug on the system and shipped it off without confirming that the replacement system configuration would work.   

Hopefully your not part of their IT department because in IT mistakes like this are severe enough for termination of employment. I have seen people fired for lesser acts of not using their brains in IT     Not being able to print out BOMs puts manufacturing at a stand still and costs A LOT. It was bad enough when our wave solder machine went down and manufacturing was able to assemble PCB's but unable to wave solder them. In desperation some boards were hand soldered for all connections and then sent to the PCB wash to remove flux then dried in a DRYER of all moisture, and then powered in a room at 120F and then tested afterwards to make sure they passed stress test and then shipped.No I am not in IT there lol. I was one of the people who asked them not to do this....

Since we do not know what format the BOMs are stored in, there is no way we could answer the question as to whether they will be recoverable from the disks themselves.  My guess would be that they won't be recoverable without the disks being re-installed in the AS400.Ok great point there. I will check Monday to see if I can get this information. Hopefully there is some way  we can find a software than can emulate AS400 or read / make it accessible in Windows. It is just incomprehensible how shortsighted the people involved in this process have been. Question I have is.... why is the AS400 system unavailable to have the disks loaded back into it and run it as it was? Hopefully the IT department didnt drop kick it off the loading dock into the parking lot or destroy the AS400 in some other brainless method.  Sorry if this might be coming across as kind of harsh, but I'm shaking my head at this one holding back what could be said for such stupidity.

I think I might be kind of harsh with this one because it reminds me of what I was replaced with at my prior career for a small food store chain that decided that $18 per hour for a System Admin that did all and was on call 24/7/365 including while on vacation should be forced to a salary reduction of $13 per hour at the wake of the 2008 economy collapse. I left on my own terms, but my boss was fired and both of us kept the place going. They hired an ex billion dollar store chain guru who in his prime wisdom believed that it was best to shed the 2 IT buys who kept everything running smoothly for 7 sites over 300 users and 150 workstations and replace us with cheaper employment ( entry level IT individuals fresh out of a 2 year school ) and they were running the IT department very much the same as what you have to deal with. I was called to work as an outside contractor for them to fix the mess they created since I knew all the systems inside and out. I declined to assist because its a mess that they created for themselves and they should work it out. It came down to many idiots bringing systems offline during prime operating times as well as them hiring a manager of IT who had issues and was hiring and firing like crazy because other than managing people he had no clue about IT so they made him look bad and he would fire them. He never successfully hired any peons below him to cover the fact that he was a clueless manager and he was finally fired after destroying the accounting database. They finally CONTRACTED it out to a small computer store to support them as well as got a contract with RCR to support their POS system and right now I think they are actually working ok, but friends who I am in contact with who still work there miss me and my boss scott. Last I heard the reduction they had planned as lowering my salary or removal of me + removal of my boss cost them about $150,000 in losses due to registers down so they werent able to sell food to customers as well as the manager they hire that was clueless bought a bunch of IT hardware and was unsuccessful at implementing it all.

Before leaving on my own, the new clueless manager tried to get me on insubordination because I called him out privately in his office on a very stupid plan he had and I said I would seriously do it this other way instead. On the day I gave my notice he had drafted up an insubordination letter that he wanted me to sign to. I refused to sign that. Thinks maybe thats being insubordinate too to refuse to sign.  He did it his way and it crashed and burned. 

Glad your not in the IT department.  Well it was supposedly being uploaded to a database ...however this is not available for minimum 4 weeks....ok i know we all LOL'd   when he heard that but its not really funny on a day to day basis....plus my point is how do you know what you are proposing works if you say it wont be finished if it ever is ... for at least 4 weeks I was afraid that would be the case.  You will need the disks installed back in the AS400 and it will need to be booted in order to run the database software in order to retrieve the BOMs from the database.Kinda silly to be going on about it since she has zero control over what happened...or what's gonna happen...Topic Closed upon request...

Under Control Panel there is a Mouse option. GO in there and you can alter its behavior to be faster or slower and more.Thanks for the tip.

Just installed Avast free Anti-virus. Looking thru this program, it looks like I need to pay for optimizing, & a lot of other things. WEAK passwords ?! I should pay for them to change passwords ? it seems Avast has changed somethings on my pc. My Lenovo app icon is on the task bar, but don't always appear on the DESKTOP as they did before. Sometimes when booting up, I have to sign in , other times the desktop icons appear as USUAL. Maybe this makes little sense as explained, but think i'll uninstall Avast ; maybe just use Charter ant-virus.

I have an hp pavilion all in one, upgraded the bios to get rid of that ANNOYING pop up, now when the computer boots it is just a black screen, i removed the cmos for 15 minutes, out it back in and nothing. Any suggestions? Is this a hardware of software problem?1) WHAT popup?

2) Did you follow the bios flash instructions to the letter? If so, did it seem to COMPLETE properly?

3) Although bius upgrades are generally safe these days, if one DOES happen to go wrong it is possible to brick the system. We have to consider that possibility.

4) When you say you removed the cmos, I assume you mean you removed the battery. When you did that, did you also unplug the power to the computer? You must do both.

5) Does the system sound as though it is booting? If so, try a DIFFERENT display (also check the cable connections to the display on both ends).

6) Did anything else happen during the flash that you are not telling us? Did anything happen IMMEDIATELY after (you moved the computer, etc)?After running the hp health test it RECOMMENDED i flash the bios, everything seemed to go fine, being an all in one pc i am not sure how to check the display. The system sound like it boots just fine but nothing on the screen. And yes i removed the battery and power cable for 15 minutes. Nothing irregular happened that i noticed. Is there another way to reset the BIOS? Could it be the integrated graphics card? I cant even check the boot menu. thanksI suggest you call HP. If this happened immediately after updating the bios it sounds as though something may have gone awry during the process. I'm not sure there's anything you can do, but HP is the one to contact at this point. Especially since it's an all in one and you can't change the display.I did, they want me to ship it to them. Interesting video processing/editing history ... Adobe sort of pulled the market out from under them.  Yeah, that effect wasn't done on a PC, it would have used specialised hardware.  That said, most high end video editing software will support picture in picture type effects however your PC will probably struggle - Video editing is very CPU intensive.Did they ever developed an PC version of the Paintbox...?

This was pretty much how it was done back then. The first thing I thought of myself was the Amiga Video Toaster, which was a bit later.

Another thing is that, at least as far as I'm aware, these video solutions dealt entirely with Analog signals. I'd expect you are trying to get this effect with modern digital video formats. Even if you had all the hardware/software you'd need to setup a bunch of video signals to broadcast simultaneously to create the effect in a real-time recorded proof. my wife is using Outlook 2007 but the ACCOUNT was originally SETUP with POP acct. many years ago,way before having a tablet and smart phone.
Her phone and tablet are set in Imap. I would like to "convert" her Outlook to IMAP as well, and found this website http://www.msoutlook.info/question/634 that explains how to proceed in 3 easy steps:

1) DELETING the pop3 account
2) adding the IMAP acct
3) move personal folders/emails from former POP to newer IMAP

If I understand the article correctly, I might get stuck with 2 sets of special folders (inbox, sent items, etc), which will be cause for confusion. For instance, once all the emails from the original Pop Inbox are moved to the new Imap inbox, will I be ABLE to DELETE the old pop inbox?

When i install CODE BLOCKS i go in and code some c++ for a while, i save the code, and close code blocks, but when i try to go back into code blocks it says, "The item "'codeblocks.exe' that this shortcut refer to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly". Once i see this message i go to where i INSTALLED code blocks, and there is no exe to run code blocks, so it seems that when i close code blocks it UNINSTALLS itself, so COULD anyone help me?You may wan to read this:

I need to SORT columns in a spread sheet which contains customer names and CONTACT information. I need to sort them first by STATE and then by city. Do I expand the SELECTION or  continue with current selection when I select he state column?

I have received an Excel attachment I want to open and download. When I click the download link, a window pops up that asks me how I want to download the program. There are many program options but Excel is not one of them. I have tried 3 browsers and various other things. I have Excel on my Windows 10 program - do not know why I don't see that option. I have tried typing "Microsoft Excel" into the search bar but I get a window saying that option does not exist.

I have previously downloaded Excel files - don't know why there is a change now.

How do I get this attachment downloaded to Excel?

Thanks!I'd download it to desktop or some data LOCATION folder first, and then navigate to the file. Then ifs its an xls it should open with the excel that you have installed. I am looking for a small, fits on a 2 gig USB drive, program that can pull the SOFTWARE keys from the INSTALLED programs on a system. I PLAN on selling them on ebay....just kidding! LOL How many people were feeling the blood rushing to their heads!

I received an email with attachment in PDF FILE. When I tried to open a PDF -file, it displays an ERROR MESSAGE that says: "Error FORMAT: PDF format is not correct, or the file is corrupted"
Then I tried to open my .pdf other tools for .pdf files, but they showed once again that same error message.
There is an option to solve this problem?
Have them re-send it...sounds like the file is corrupt.
BTW Foxit Reader for Firefox is a great pdf reader...and Free.

I do not recall deleting or changing the name of this file. It has several months worth of work in it. The file name appears with an exclaimation point. When I try to open it I get the error message attached.b

If you perform a search on your system for "Ronnie Oldfield TBT 2015.xlsm" do you find it located in any other location on your system?  Your system is reporting that it lost access to the file or the file no longer exists.
Thank you for your reply. Tried system restore for a second time and recovered it.Awesome ... be sure to save it to another location though as well as any other IMPORTANT data so that if you ever lost your hard DRIVE you wouldnt lose your data. A cheap $5 USB Flash Drive is so worth it.

Other option which is free is e-mail yourself your files after you work on the most important of ones. I use to use my Yahoo e-mail acct years ago before cloud storage as a cloud storage for files lesser than 10MB in size.

These days with cloud storage if you dont mind your data being elsewhere you can use one of those as well such as Google Drive etc.

I still like USB sticks and external hard drives though for maximum privacy as well as faster transfer of files vs through internet connection.

I have the latest verison of Picasa installed and use it for a lot of quick fixes and edit's.  When I add new pictures too FILES it all ready, scanned it will not update into Picasa For Reference:

When open a file that is worked for 2 DAYS, the illustrator show an error box:
Can't open the illustration. COULD not complete the requested operation.

Then the opened file has only a BLANK layer.
Do other illustrator files open properly to where its only a problem with this one file or is illustrator CS2 corrupt?

I have windows 7 pro. I do a backup and I eventually get "Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Dropbox\Camera Uploads. I had been using LInk SHELL Extension for some time.

Here's what I was doing:

I had a folder set up with "CLONES" of five important files, that were in five different locations. As various and sundry software updated the master .DAT files, the clones would also update. (It was super easy for backups - just backup the folder with the five clones, and I always had a good backup.)

This worked well on my last MACHINE, which was a Dell Win 7 64 bit.

On my new machine, however, it does not work - also a Dell Win 7 64 bit.

I can Pick the Source, and DROP a HARD Link. And the hard link is a clone of the initial file. But it doesn't update when the original updates.

So... If this makes sense to anyone... Is there another piece of software that does the same thing, that I could try?

I am LOOKING for a good free SSH/Telnet program. I know about putty and others like it but what I am looking for is something a little more. Something like secureCRT but without the cost. It will be used for production and need to be simple but also do print screen. The users do not know a lot about PCs so I want something I can load onto a machine and let them at it. Any ideas?

First, AVG is good. The pop-ups my be from the web site.
Second, this forum does not have an 'official' list of free software.
Now having said that, the free version of Malware bytes is good to have.
Also, you should already have the Microsoft Essentials.

I only recently downloaded this program as I've been using the other version mpc-hc and been looking through it's options specifically the key bindings and couldn't find anything that allows me to quickly switch between certain favorites or a-b points in a video file so I'm hoping someone is experienced in using this program and could hopefully help me out in telling me if I've MAYBE missed something.

Whist looking through the reviews i noticed that there was only one persistent issue with the mouse; it doesn't turn off during standby and it's pretty bright. This isn't a huge issue, but since it's a bright mouse it will be a problem when i'm trying to GO to bed (My desktop is in my bedroom).

What i'm wanting is something (Preferably software) that will shut off the specific USB port that the mouse is plugged into whenever the computer goes into standby mode. I was wondering if there was any sort of software that would help me with this?

In Device Manager, for your USB hub devices, you'll want to open their properties and make SURE that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

However, this won't be enough. Windows is "smart" enough to provide power to devices, even in sleep mode, if they are capable of waking the system, such as keyboards or mice. So in order for the mouse to be shut down during sleep, you'll have to crack open the properties for the mouse and make sure that "Allow this device to wake the computer" is unchecked.

Of course, this means you won't be able to use the mouse to wake up the computer.

My PC turns on and the fan and lights comes on, but it doesnt boot up and shows a blank screen..What do you think is the problem of my computer???What is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, ETC)? The problem is with your ISP or something in your local network.
Reset you modem and router.
Tran off you PC and bring it BACK on.  This should reset the Internet connection. If this keeps on happening, you need to contact your local provider, ISP.
Also, try other WEB sites just to see.

At eh command line you can ping these sites to see how long it takes to respond. Ifa the response if very slow, it means you have a local issue with you  ISP.

Above  is a bad example of an ISP issue. There was nothing wrong with Yhaoo.

Thanks for trying, anyway.The issue looks like the CSS stylesheet was not downloaded/applied to the page. It tends to be a result of crappy security software (which often puts itself between browsers and the internet) or problems with either the ISP or the website.

Clearing the browser cache can sometimes help this as well. Sometimes a stylesheet will download, but be blank or interrupted DUE to the error, but then get's cached. Control-F5 should also workaround this as well, since it forces a full reload of the page.

My arm was amputated above my ELBOW last year and I now have a myoelectric controlled hand which is interchangeable with a myoelectric controlled ETD (hook attachment). Both the hand and ETD processors have software to communicate via Bluetooth which I am trying to install on my laptop. But when installing the software I'm getting an error message saying "SERIAL Communication port is not Available". What do I NEED to do to correct this? I installed a Bluetooth antenna and device manager shows devices are operating correctly. Screen shot attached.

To avoid conflicting with a physical RS-232 type of COM port I ended up using a Virtual COM5 port I think it was leaving COM1 thru COM4 alone because of the COM1/COM3 and COM2/COM4 shared interrupt mess you can run into. COM5 if allowed to be set up this way will get you out of potential of a Serial Controller on the system from being shared with Bluetooth.Information about setting COM ports for Bluetooth.
