Solve : What computer hardware affects file-transfer speed across a wireless connection??

Answer»

For instance, if I've got computers playing audio-clips on a separate computers HDD

I know the NIC and switch affect it, what else? CPU? RAM?

Thankyou

Ok so your playing the music over a share to another computers hard drive and having issues with transfer speed?

Here are all I can think of that affect speed of file transfers for your setup:

1.) Wireless Signal Strength ( Further away with weak signal sync's slower data RATE than STRONG signal )
2.) Wireless Noise ( other wireless devices on same channel but different network competing for airwaves )
3.) Wireless B, G, N etc ( maximum data transfer speed is dependent on what wireless connection your connected to as for there is a maximum throughput speed. Such as if your connecting a new computer over wireless to a 10 year old Wireless B network, Your Wireless adapter is connected to B speed/bandwidth limitation.
4.) Wireless Adapter USB Addon or Card .... ( Wireless Cards internally installed are better than an external USB connected Wireless Adapter in some situations where the USB BUS is busy with External Drive connected to it etc to where the USB controller itself is flooded with the data juggle. )
5.) Computer that the wireless is running on also affects it, CPU ( ability to juggle the multitasking ), RAM ( ability to multitask without having to rely so greatly on virtual memory of the hard drive or SSD ), Hard Drive ( virtual memory and caching of data located elsewhere )
6.) If not peer to peer wireless and a wireless access point of router is used the quality and performance of the access point or router that the data is passing through as a relay point can also CAUSE the speed to be slow.
7.) All other wireless devices that are using bandwidth will affect the transfer rate between 2 systems as for the access point of router that the systems are all going through is busy handing all packet requests and so performance dives with more devices requesting and sending packets through wireless access point or router.
8.) Lastly on routers mainly. Many of them also have wired connections available. Data transferring over the wired network connections competes with wireless devices for the ARM processors processing power. They are quite powerful for slow clocked devices, but the more they are working the slower performance will be to maintain the juggle. Example being my D-LINK Router that has a 350Mhz ARM processor in it that I flashed with DD-WRT. It sometimes is flooded with packet requests from Roku, Kindle Fire, 3 computers,  Playstation 3, and Vonage VoIP Telephone, but it runs perfectly fine. HOWEVER I had to flash the $25 router to DD-WRT to gain QoS so that I could set a priority for VoIP to have an allocation of bandwidth because otherwise a download of the latest Linux Distro would cause the phone to cut out or get choppy. Setting QoS I can be downloading large files over the web and telephone acts crystal clear without issues becaue QoS rule is set to give the phone 1MB of bandwidth and leave the rest for all other devices vs all devices competing as equal priority. Most of the time the limit is the ISP company and not your stuff.
Wat speed is reported for the wireless connection?
For each wireless workstation do this:
Go to one of the speed test sites and test the speed for that connection.
Most of the time the speed will be much below the connection of the wireless device itself. That's normal.
Typical is where device is at 54 Mbps and the network test shows 10 Mbps.
Some internet connections go above 25 Mbps. At that speed you behold able to stream four videos on four computers at the same time.

But if you want to stream more than  two videos at once, you need to get a better Internet connection.

I have one question:

Quote

Hard Drive ( virtual memory and caching of data located elsewhere )

I don't understand this. How does the virtual memory and [caching function] differ between HDDs? How do these things effect the data-processing speed?

Thanks both of you for your help!
As you've already mentioned, the NIC and the Switch/Router will affect the file transfer.

If we are talking about transfer over a LAN through a network drive, then both computers are themselves involved, in terms of the transfer using processing power as well as being limited by HDD speed. Taking your example of an Audio Clip the system that you are trying to play it on effectively treats it like a normal file- in many respects the program playing it doesn't know. it reads from it like it would from any HDD, but from there, internally, the system knows it is not an actual HDD locally and is able to effectively ask the other computer for that information. the Other computer then reads the appropriate part of that file, and transfers it over the network, where the original system receives it and will then decode it and play it.

The main factors affecting the transfer are going to be the speed of the HDD on the remote system, the speed of it's processor (affecting how fast it can SERVICE network requests), and the speed of the network itself. The only factor affecting the local system (the one playing the audio clip) will be primarily the actual audio decoding task and the network interface.

Solve : Vga/Dvi issues?

Answer»

I have a acer S200QL monitor with VGA/DVI slots. I upgraded my RIG completely although I'm having ISSUES with the monitor. My monitor is set to VGA on the menu tab meaning my GTX 960S DVI plug in wont be read. Issue with when I'm TOLD to switch the input is I can't open the menu because of no signal. I've TRIED plugging my monitor into a VGA compatible rig(different computer)and changing the settings from there. Issue is when I'd change the input to DVI it automatically went back to VGA. Bump.

Solve : Blank DVD-R restore?

Answer»

Too often, when I start to copy a DVD movie to a blank DVD, the program (Roxio Creator) stops and tells me copy was unsuccessful. To retry, it tells me to have another blank DVD ready. The first DVD is UNUSABLE although it has very little data on it.  Can it be erased and REUSED/ No, you cannot erase DVD-R disks, only DVD-RW.If this continues to be a problem, The OP may consider GETTING a new DVD burner.

For what its worth... ONE could try and write to the DVD with a backup program. The program may have a way to write even on a closed disc.
Or just forget it. DVD-R packs are cheep noways.

Solve : 280x 3d club Royal Queen Driver Leads to BSOD on startup.?

Answer»

Hi I got this new graphic card and I am TRYING to make it work. I bought it used knowing it had issue so I got it for very cheap. I dont have ton of cash and I had a dire need for a new dx11 capable card. The card works fine until the Driver are installed then after the reboot it gives me a BSOD. I have a feeling it can be fixed, Its just a question of how?

Ive already erased all the old Drivers, ive reset the card Bios, I tried older Driver and now im on last stable driver. all were cleanly wiped. I also tried this http://windows7themes.net/en-us/fix-atikmpag-sys-atikmdag-sys-blue-screen-errors-bsod/ to no avail.

Thanks for the help and cheers!Rum memtest 86 and make SURE system RAM checks out ok as for video card and system ram is sometimes shared even though video card has its own memory.

If all checks out with memtest86 then I'd say you have a junk video card and bought someone elses problem. Someone may have cooked it and listed it to sell it for something vs nothing and taking a total loss. With correct driver the card should be fine. The video card may have a flaw that only shows up when pushed harder with actual oem driver vs the generic driver that windows assigns.

Solve : Asus P5E-VM DO + Q9400 or P5E-VM HDMI + Q6600 for gaming of videos??

Answer»

I have both motherboards and dont know how to tell wich one would be superior and more quiet to watch movies and play videogames.
I have 8gb of ram 800mhz and a Zotac GT 630 2GB Ram graphic pci-E card.
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5EVM_HDMI/ or https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5EVM_DO/
P5E-VM DO has no way of CONTROLLING the speed of the chassis fan, so i have to unplug it
P5E-VM Hdmi has Q-fan for chassis fan but setting it on auto gets way too loud after a few minutes of video or tiny game. the other options is 60% or more, very loud, or disable qfan and use speedfan, but running at 100% everytime i boot until speed manualy corrected.

Don't make a decision only on the noise of the fan.
There are ways to reduce fan noise.
Get a speed controller that follows  case TEMP..
Wear headphones when you play.
Additionally replacing a smaller fan with a larger fan can blow same volume of air quieter. I went from a 80MM to 120mm fan in one SYSTEM and it quieted it down some.Replace the chassis fan with a higher quality ball bearing/ ROLLER bearing  unit...

Solve : Intel Integrated graphics vs Dedicated graphics card ??

Answer»

I intend to buy a new laptop - primary use is MS Office, watching movies / live webstreams and browsing. However, I do use it for video editing occasionally using a software CALLED "Pinnacle Studio MovieBox". This software has a reqmnt for "direct X 9 or 10 compatible graphics card with 128 MB"

Currently I have HP G42-478TX, which works great.

As I look to buy a new laptop, if I go for an i3/i5 intel core processor (windows 8/10) laptop with Integrated graphics card (NO dedicated graphics card), will it be sufficient to run the above software? Or will I need a dedicated NVIDIA type graphics card ?
I have Pinnacle Studio 15 on my one laptop with a Celeron 1000M 1.8Ghz 2MB L2 Cache and it works just fine for editing etc. I bought one of those RCA capture boxes by Pinnacle and have no complaints. My integrated graphics are a Intel HD2500 I have been told. And i3 or i5 would have better integrated than that of what I have on my laptop.

So if your not playing video games, you can go with Integrated, but if you might use it at all for gaming then modern GeForce GPU laptop would be a way to go.

Video play on a Geforce based laptop would be better also, better fps and if you plan on connecting HDMI to a TV etc, it will work better than integrated.

If your LOOKING to go as cheap as possible the integrated will work according to my weaker Intel CPU/GPU running Pinnacle Studio 15.

Solve : adding new old hdd?

Answer» HI Guys
I need some help, I want to move my "old" 640gb hdd from my redundant Zoostorm Q6600 to my current Zoostorm desktop as it contains files that I might want in the future and I'll just use it as an archive disk in future.
So my questions are:
Is there a "how to" on this anywhere?
Will the 640gb disk function after transfer?
What happens to the windows 7?
Should I delete windows? Before of after transfer?
Is there anything else I should know or do?

thanks in advance
Ian

My old pc is a:
Zoostorm Advanced Premium Desktop PC, Q6600, 4GB RAM, 640GB HDD, 512MB DDR3, running Windows 7, 32bit

My new current PC is a:
Zoostorm Gaming Desktop PC, Intel Core i5-4670 3.4Ghz CPU 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram 2TB HDD & 128GB SSD B85 Motherboard ATX Case with 500W PSU, running Windows 8.1, 64bitAssuming your old hard disk is a SATA disk, you can DISCONNECT the power to both PCs, remove the disk drive from the older PC and install it in a spare bay in the newer one, connect a SATA power connector to the disk, and a SATA data cable to the disk drive and a spare SATA port on the motherboard, then power up the PC, PRESS the start button and SEE what happens.

You should see Windows starting and the added disk showing up as a drive letter.

You may have to set the boot order in the BIOS.

Solve : Dell Studio XPS, media keys activate on their own?

Answer»

My laptop is a Dell studio XPS 1340, running Windows Vista. The model comes equipped with touch sensitive "media keys" (which do things such as controlling the volume, PLAYING or stopping media, and other things...) which are located between the keyboard and battery.

Lately, these keys have seemingly activated on their own, very inconveniantly turning on and off the laptop's wireless adapter (also controlled via media-key), as well as other less-annoying but still troublesome things such as automatic muting/unmuting and ejecting (this is why I think my problem is indeed with the media keys as opposed to, say, a wireless problem, as all these unwanted functions are controlled by said keys).

The problem occurs often and unpredictably; as I can access the internet from my laptop now, there are times everything seems to be fine. Besides the annoyance at being randomly disconnected, I would not worry about this as much as I do, but my laptop-startup has also been running SLOWER than usual from time to time, and on one occasion my laptop needed a system-restore before starting up. I fear that there is a connection between these problems (my computer suffered a crash with similar "symptoms" some months back and needed a harddrive replacement, during the time leading up to that, the media keys did not malfunction like they do now, but they did malfunction, often blinking on and off and being unresponsive).

I could not find help concerning this specific problem anywhere else, and could use some prompt advice (before things possibly get worse), hopefully something that could be done at home, or at least not warrant my system being out of commission for a long while. I thank you guys and girls in advance. So there are 3 primary issues you are having..  laptop functions randomly activating, intermittent connection problem and slow start up...

My first hunch is that this is a software problem.  I would boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run scans with Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy(download and update them first, obviously), to check off a possible malware issue.. To get to safe mode w/ networking, restart the laptop and repeatedly tap the F8 key until you see advanced boot options.. select Safe Mode with Networking..

If no malware turns up(or if this doesn't fix your problems), type RUN into the vista search box from the desktop and run it when it APPEARS in the menu.. Type MSCONFIG into the RUN box and press ENTER.. Go the the "services" tab and tick the box that says "hide microsoft services", click disable all, click apply, OK, then go to the "start up" tab, click on disable all, click apply, click ok, and restart into normal mode..

If this fixes your problems, then you know that one or more of those start up or non-ms services are CAUSING conflicts.  If these suggestions don't help, try LOOKING at the mfr. documentation or reviews, for possible known issues with your model.. I think I was having 2 problems. The disconnect issue seemed to be simply caused by faulty hardware, as switching control of the wireless switch away from the media keys using Windows Mobility Center pretty much solved that problem (media keys still seem to malfunction with the messed-up eject and all, but since the wireless media-key doesn't control wireless anymore, the disconnecting is done away with).

As can be inferred, this has no effect on the startup problem. However, when the programs are disabled as you advised, it boots up pretty quickly under those conditions. So thank you for your help! I'll try and root out problems with individual programs sometime later, for now things are going good. I'll check back if more troubles arise

Solve : DELL LATITUDE D820 - BATTERY PROBLEM?

Answer»

Hello good people,

Here's the issue

The battery indicator (in the device status lights area on my laptop) started flashing green and orange. Dell manual says it happens when battery is too hot to start charging.

1. Although battery wasn't hot at all, I DISCONNECTED laptop from electrical outlet, removed battery for one day and then put it back - it didn't work, the indicator still flashing.

2.When I remove the battery and turn it on, the indicator stops flashing.

Any idea?

Thank you.
If the battery is over two years old you may need to replace it.'battery meter" readings show battery is 100% charged and operating normally. The indicator flashing 3 orange lights and then 1 green....

Any idea? Again when I remove battery, indicator stops falshing...Since I purchased my laptop, I mostly work connected to AC...used the battery only 3-4 times only when I need to take laptop outside...Now I got a MESSAGE "battery needs replacement". I however tried to discharge it as much as possible...it was SAYING 5% left in the "power meter" then I tried to charge the battery again. Now "power meter" shows "battery charged 100%" however indicator keeps flashing orange and green

I have 2 questions:

1. Does it mean my battery is dead and I need to buy a new one? I bought this laptop 2006.

2. If the battery is dead, is it OK to leave it in the laptop or it's not safe...and I should remove it and work only thru AC power?

thank youA 4 year old laptop battery is most likely dead...or on it's last legs.

You will need to decide if this laptop is worth the cost of a new battery...

PS. Some laptops will not run on mains only unless a working battery is in place.thanks patio. Hello good people,

just bought a new battery for my DELL LATITUDE D820. I am not gonna use the battery a lot since I use laptop at home connected to outlet.

Do I need to keep battery in the laptop or remove it?

any advice is appreciated.

"Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)"

LOOKS like I should remove the battery if a laptop operates on fixed power...is it correct?

Does the HP have recovery CDs that came with it?

Otherwise does the machine have a recovery partition still existent on the hard drive?
You may be able to restore it directly to how it was when you first purchased the machine.

When the machine starts up, look for a message that says press (something) to access recovery.
It may or may not be present.

If you break the "low fuel" warning on a car, you still have low fuel.

if a printer says you have low ink/toner and you disable that, you still have low ink/toner.

Disabling a warning indicator doesn't MEAN that the condition for which the warning pertains can no longer happen. My bank statement reads "$0.00 credit". Please can I have a software program to allow me to carry on buying stuff?

Quote

i am unable to install nero, so i format the pc, after formating nero get installed, i installed all drivers from motherboard CD, i get message for audio drivers installed failed

It should be :
1.Format/reformat PC.
2.Install motherboard driver(cd installer).
a. Install videocard driver if you have a GRAPHIC card device installed on mobo.
b. If you have soundcard device installed, install(by cd, usually comes with the mobo driver).
In my experience the Nero setup WOULD fail if the drive was being compressed by windows. The likely reason it worked after a format was because the drive was not yet indexed/compressed in the temp directory.

You should always start with the motherboard drivers after a reformat

Solve : Updating ASUS M2N4-SLI BIOS causes USB mouse problems?

Answer»

Hello.

I updated my ASUS M2N4-SLI BIOS from Revision 0902 to 1206 via the EZ Flash. After the reboot, it took a very long time for Windows XP to load. After the loading screen, it took about 3-5 minutes for the Welcome screen to come up. When the Welcome screen finally came up, the mouse would work only intermittently. It would move for a few seconds, STOP for a few seconds, etc.

The reason I wanted to update my BIOS was because I bought new RAM, Kingston DDR2 HyperX Blu 4GB (two 2 GB sticks), that is supposed to be compatible with M2N4-SLI mobo. When I tried installing the RAM I would get 1 long 2 SHORT beeps. I even called Kingston and they verified it should work with that motherboard. When I told him the BIOS version I was USING he said I should update the BIOS so the motherboard would recognize the brand new RAM.

I already looked in the ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard specific forum and there's not MUCH activity or information there. Other PEOPLE have experienced the same issue using BIOS versions 1206 and 1205, but there has not been much feedback for those people either. I called ASUS support (and they don't seem to know too much) and it was suggested to re-flash the BIOS with 1206 and then call back. Does anyone know if the BIOS version 1206 USB mouse issue can be fixed?

If this thread is in wrong forum please move it! I guess it should have been in the Drivers/Firmware forum?

Solve : can an AMD MB read a INTEL formated HD?

Answer»

I just replaced my computer which was  Intel based, RUNNING WINDOWS98SE.,because the MB died..the new computer is an AMD based WinXP PRO.. I regularly backed up my files and system with MSBACKUP. Which is not supported under XP. I know that I can create a Partition and reinstall 98 and restore the files that way  but I was wondering though if I could use the HD  from the old system and use that to boot the new system so that I can copy the data files to DVD? In other words would a Intel formatted  HD boot up on an AMD based machine?   It may not bboot up properly but you can  Jse This Guide  to retrieve your data...

BTW the CPU does not make a difference in this equation at all...I know how to slave a HD...I use a seoerate HD for my backups..will there be problems with the slave drive have been formatted with an Intel chip Quote

the CPU does not make a difference in this equation at all...
New motherboard has different chipset.  Win98SE will recognize different hardware & ATTEMPT to boot.   You will need the Win98SE chipset drivers.  Windows will ask to insert the Win CD several TIMES.  As Patio stated, it has nothing to do with the CPU.

512 MB Nvidia 8600 / 512 MB ATI 3870

Also, how much would it take to upgrade my current PC to be able to run it?

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06 GHz

1 Gig of RAM

Enough Space

NVIDA Geforce 6200

So estimated price for buying a brand new one, and estimated price for upgrading what I already have (If I can)GTA IV is a buggy nightmare when it comes to system requirements when it first came out. I truely love the GTA series... but GTA 4 is well infected by Microsoft! It's the only one that is bugged, doesn't work the first time you install it from DVD, and requires a lot of patching (after it's already been released). It also forces you to install 'Gamers for Windows' and some other side applications.

I suggest you need  a 2.4GHz Duo Core Processor or more, it's not really processor hungry except the loading.

Your'll need at least 2GB RAM, 4GB recommended.

However, what really bugs this game or gets it to run smoothly is the graphics card and video card memory!

I had a 8800GTX - run like a dog, freeze, lagging, ripping, auto-locked the graphics all on low. I uninstalled the game, nothing would improve it even tweaking... read some of the troubleshooting forums around for bugs in this game, it's useless... I got an error during install, solution return the DVD to store, re-install 3 times, suddenly works. Got this Graphic card error blah, solution downgrade graphic card driver. Got lag and ripping, solution ...

I got a Nvidia 275GTX 896MB later on, tried the game, it was totally different. Runs smoothly, max the graphics, no graphic ripping or lag. It was seriously like playing a different game. Still had a few bugs like issues can't go bowling, etc, but they released patch updates for those.

Bottom line: It's a graphic card memory hog. The graphic card will cost you a good chunk. Stick to the older 'real' games of the series if you don't. They released this too early, not the same programmers and messed it up working with MS.Well, is my computer at a stan dpoint where it can be upgraded to run well?

How much approximatly?Well unless you want to go the full mile and invest into a new computer with i7 Core, i would suggest:

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06 GHz > upgrade to > Intel Core2 Duo 3.0GHz+
1 Gig of RAM > upgrade to > 2GB DDR2+
NVIDA Geforce 6200 > upgrade to > Nvidia GTX260+

Processor and Graphic Card could be expensive. Nvidia GTX260 is a cheaper option.
I would look up on 'pricespy' for the cheapest prices, but that's only for here in NZ Stores.I skipped GTA4 myself, and opted for Just Cause 2. similar in many ways, but not so unjustifiably demanding on my system.

problem is, with those "upgrades" they will probably need a new motherboard as well, (GF 6200FX is almost certainly AGP, memory is probably DDR, and the pentium 4 uses a different slot from the Core2 Duo) so it wouldn't really be an "upgrade" as much as it would be "replacing everything but the case". It would probably be just as well to build a new PC, that WAY they will have their older PC to either sell or fall back onto if their new build ever has problems. I think the whole "Games for windows"/"Windows Live" or whatever it is is more for games that are developed and have versions for the Xbox 360- I suppose they decided to keep that bit in for their other ports (aside from PS3). I know Fallout3 has it, which is nonsense. (it's not even multiplayer...). You can usually find patches to remove them if you want to, though.

Oh yeah... it runs fine on a PS3 too I think that's why it has the funky requirements, they originally designed it for  the PS3, not your average PC. (from what I can tell, CONSOLES started off much better for games then PCS... then around the time of the gamecube/PS2/Xbox they were very close (so games like GTA3, San Andreas and Vice city, and a few other games that were probably originally created for the PS2) ran rather well on what was your average PC at the time of their release). but now the PS3, Wii* and the Xbox 360 have a lot more graphical and CPU horsepower so when you design a game for that you are going to need more horsepower on your "everyday" PC.

* I struck out the Wii because if I can run SSBB in an emulator at 100% speed with 4 players then I'm apt to believe the Wii might not be as powerful as I originally thought. Yeah, well Im a big GTA nerd. I mean, I plan on playing some of the smaller games, like San Andreas, Face of Mankind, some of my more favorited games, but at the same time I love GTA IV, and what comes great with all good games? Modding. So I really want to mod GTA IV on the PC + I heard about the LCPDFR mod which is amazing. Im a machinima creator aswell as Im anticipating IV:MP for the RP scripts.

So really, I do not care much about how hard it will be, Im more looking into what it'll take so I can get a computer READY for said things, with no lag. Plus ultimately it'll improve the games I currently own aswell.San Andreas is a "Smaller Game"?

*FAINTS*

I mean smaller as in, not as straining on your computer.

Solve : Printer changes spacing and only prints every other page of word document?

Answer»

I am new to the site and I have looked but I don't see anything posted about this.  I apologize if it has been answered before.  I appreciate any help you can give me.

I recently installed a HP1000 J110 series printer.  I started printing a word document of raffle tickets that I needed.  I have printed over 200 pages of this.  I can also print successfully from the web or a pdf file.  But when I try to print my homework from a word document the spacing has changed to double and it only prints every other page.  I just printed a 7 page single space document - it printed 7 pages double spaced - it printed complete paragraphs but seemed to skip every other page.  I have GONE over my settings but I can't find anything that seems to need changed.  I can't figure out why it prints okay on one but not on the others.
When you say 'you've gone over your settings' is this the box that opens before you finally click 'print'.

It confirms - 'Print : All pages in range', Page Range - Select 'All', Print what : Document etc

Is this what you mean by settings???Yes, those are the settings I checked.Do you have another software that you can use to create the document in (other than MS Word? If so i would suggest that you try that and see if it changes anything. My suspicion is that the issue is more likely a result of the Word program than a printer issue.Given that you are NOT changing the settings when you change your tasks. truenorthI copied my two page paper over to WordPad and it printed the exact same way as it did from Word.  Double spaced and it printed the beginning and end but left out what looks like would have been page 2 if I had wanted it double spaced.  Everything is double spaced, even between paragraphs.

positivedays
Which version of Word2007I found this while researching your issue on your behalf. Personally i don't think the issue is this complex. However it DOES deal with your precise problem and it DOES provide a specific course of action to remedy it. But my impression is that it is relating more to an event that happens all the time as opposed to your situation of only with a certain document. Wade through it  (not being very positive am i) and perhaps it will assist you.
http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/SYSADPRTSVCS/tsprint-78101.html
truenorth I have to leave for a few minutes.  I appreciate the help!!!  Be right back and will definately wade through it.  Thanks.

positivedaystruenorth, that information does address my problem....but it is WAY above my head! lol

I just figured out something interesting.  I realized that the word documents that I have been successful in printing have had some (not all) color to them.  Everything prints fine.  The documents that have been giving me TROUBLE are just black text, so I changed the color of the text of the 2 page paper I have been trying to print to dark blue and it printed perfectly?  I changed it back to black and it was wrong again.

At least I have my paper for class tomorrow...lol

Maybe, uninstall and re-install your Printer (driver) software.

You have a CD, right?I want to expose you to my logic re your issue with your printing. The parameter for "spacing" is NOT a function of your printer program. It IS a function of the document creating program in this case that would be MS Word. The aspect of printing alternative pages or double sided printing is a function of your printer settings. It is my belief as stated earlier that your problem emanates from "Word' and not your printer settings. Therefore i believe it to be premature to be uninstalling software for the printer.
Instead i would like you to reset your "Word 2007" to it's default settings and let us see what happens. Here is the link to guide you on aspects of that function.
http://www.lostintechnology.com/how-to/how-to-change-the-default-settings-in-microsoft-word-2007
Good luck, truenorthI followed the instructions given in that link and it did not make a difference in the print outcome.  If it is a problem with the Word program, why does the document print when I change the ink color from black to another color?  I just changed one word in a one page paper to red and the entire paper printed correctly (with one red word).  I changed the color back to black and it double spaced and only printed one page which was only about half the information.

I really appreciate everyone's help and the research you are doing!

positivedaysTo answer your last POST as to "why does the document print when I change the ink color from black to another color? ". It is my suspicion that a change at sometime was made in word (perhaps inadvertently) that CREATED a "new default" for a print process involving the particular task that is creating this issue. However i must confess that a big hole gets shot in that theory when if as you say you have reverted the MS Word back to default settings. That should have removed any user generated previous changes.
Now going back to this statement "I recently installed a HP1000 J110 series printer." How old is this printer? Has it EVER printed a "black" text document in any word processing software correctly?truenorthI purchased & installed the printer on Friday, September 3.  I immediately started printing the raffle tickets that I needed with no problems.  I tried to print one of my papers on Tuesday and I found the problem.  So no it has never printed a black text document.

Solve : Getting a gaming computer?

Answer»

Hey i am working on a gaming computer....dont want to put all the parts TOGETHER my self so i am going to buy this computer HTTP://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227241

im looking at the computer specs and it says it has a bunch of pci slots, but it also says right now it has a radeon hd 5450 PCI Express 2.0 x16...does that mean there is a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot open if i take out the radeon 5450?

i read the reviews on the computer, and it seems to be pretty good save the video card, but its good enough for now, so i will upgrade later in the future....what video card would i want to upgrade with? i was thinking this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187086&cm_re=9800_gt-_-14-187-086-_-Product

this will be my second time buying my own computer...first time i tried buying a cheap gaming laptop....with a radeon x1200 graphics card.....LOL was a fail, and wasted 800 dollars....
hoping this time i will get it done right!!

thanksfirst of all, how much money are you willing to spend on your computer?

wanting to spend around 550....willing to go to 600....but really dont want to spend too much! but if u can find me something catchy i might fork out another 100! :S

tempted to get a loan and buy this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+/+17.3%22+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Red/Black/9728443.p?id=1218161511080&skuId=9728443

but last time i spent that much on a laptop it turned out to be sucky....how can i be sure this will be awesome? Quote from: STC on September 09, 2010, 02:41:39 PM

If you are looking to spend close to $1,000.00 for a gaming machine you would be much better off getting a desktop as you would get more for your money and it has a greater possibility of being UPGRADED in the future.

Laptops are generally not good for gaming unless you either want to spend big BUCKS for one or you only play simple games.what do you really want? a laptop or a desktop pc? And what games do you want to play? Then we can find a computer for you that will do what you want

Your first link  (the newegg one for the iBUYPOWER computer), is a desktop pc.

However, then your second link (the samsung pc from bestbuy) is a laptop.

I personally think, a laptop or PC that has DECENT enough performance for what you want it to do is sufficient, although it would be nice to leave room for upgrades if you think you'll want to do that in the future too.
ok sorry i got distracted by the laptop....desktop is definately superior and more cheap so i am going with desktop.... my plan is to get the desktop from my original post for gaming...but i heard that graphics card isnt the best....so what should i upgrade it to? and is the 480w powersupply good enough cause i dont want to upgrade psu too....maybe can yall find me a desktop in my price range i should buy?

hi all
Im looking to upgrade my pc and need some help

here is the spec of my pc atm

cpu E7400 2.8
GA-EP45T-UD3P M-board
soundblaster audigy zx
2gig ddr3 ram
gforce 9500gt 1gig
500 gig hd

and am looking to upgrade

i have about £700 to spend

im looking toward this

Intel Core i5 760 Quad Core processor
- Asus P7H55-M Intel H55
- Corsair 4096MB 1600MHz Super-Fast DDR3 Memory
- Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB Lightning fast hard drive
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 Graphics Card
- Antec 300 Gaming Case
- OCZ StealthXstream 2 700W Gaming Power Supply
- Sony Optical Drive

how much better would this be over what i have

thx in advance Er a lot!

The only THING I recommend is getting i7 Core over a i5 Core if POSSIBLE.

Pretty good memory, 1600MHz DDR3 is fast.

Good Hard Drive, spindle SPEED of 7200RPM is standard, but 32MB cache is awesome.

Good Power Supply, wouldn't need too much more unless your SLI multiple GRAPHIC cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 Graphics Card, is a great card for gaming.I'd avoid that board, personally.  I'd also pick up a better PSU.
It should be a nice jump over what you have, in gaming it will completely obliterate your CURRENT setup.

Solve : Canon imageCLASS 4350d?

Answer»

I'm running on Windows 7 with a direct usb CONNECTION to my printer. The drivers and application install correctly and the printer/scanner works. However when I perform a power cycle or restart Windows 7 tries to install the usb device and is unsuccessful. Now my printer/scanner doesn't work. It is still flagged as my default printer. Even if I delete the unsuccessful device my printer doesn't work. There are no error msgs. Print jobs just remain in que.  Any Ideas???Where is the USB port  that you use for the printer--front or rear? Have you tried another USB port? Is this a new phenomenon whereas it had worked properly before? Have you changed anything on your computer recently? Do you normally shut off the printer BEFORE you shut down the computer?Do you have the ability to cancel the print jobs in the que? truenorthThe usb port is in the front. I have tried two different ports. It did work properly after the initial install. I USUALLY turn the printer off before the pc. I can delete print jobs from the que. I have also deleted and uninstalled the drivers twice. Each time I re-install them it works fine...until I perform a power cycle or a restart and windows tries to install the device which in turn is declared an unknown device. My Canon is still listed as the default printer but will not function after the power cycle/restart.Researching this problem on your behalf i have found the following "caution" re the installation.
"The MF4350d supports Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.  Most of the household is Windows 7 but the machine attached to the MF4350d is Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.  Installation was flawless.  They do ask you to install the drivers FIRST before pluging in the USB for the first time.  There is even a cap with a string and a tag on it warning you to install the CD-ROM first, reboot, then plug in the printer.  I followed the directions and it worked like a champ.  Some people have REPORTED problems with the USB but in my case it worked fine.   The trick is you have to install the drivers first, then reboot, and only then plug in the printer.

Windows Server 2003 and Server 2008 are not supported perhaps by design of Canon since they consider this a desktop printer.  I am not a Mac user so cannot comment.  Linux should be no problem.  There is a separate instruction manual for Mac USERS that comes with it.

The documentation by the way is quite good.
Was this your method? truenorth
P.S. I just found another site with a comment re a similar problem as to what you are having on this printer. It is rather long so i will ask this question instead for the moment. Do you have the ability to have this printer installed with a different computer to see the result. Because the issue being dealt with in the article i just read refers to a comparability issue with a specific computer.I did not perform the restart after the installation. I connected the usb directly after the installation. I will follow your advice tonight. Thanks! I will post tomorrow am with the results.fingers crossed.truenorthMy issue is now resolved! I had been using the usb ports on the front of my pc. As soon as I connected to a rear port the drivers loaded correctly. Yahoo! Well done.truenorth
P.S. Thanks for posting back--this solution may help others in the future.

Solve : ATI HD-4350 Video Card - Can't get dual monitors working?

Answer»

I have Lenovo Desktop. Pentium Dual CPU E2200 2.20GHz
Running Windows XP.  It's about 3 years old.

This started by me WANTING dual monitors.  Only had 1 VGA outlet on computer.  After research, purchased ATI HD-4350 Video Card, mainly to get two video outlets (DVI and HDMI).
Connecting to HPS2031 monitor and LG monitor - they both have VGA and DVI ports.
My computer boots with the two monitors and video card hooked up, however only shows one monitor screen (without task bar) - the other monitor goes to sleep.  I cannot shut computer off using normal log-off commands.  So, I manual power off, then when I turn it back on  it just SITS there running fan.  So, I manual shutdown again.  When I power-on again, the computer is frozen - it just buzzes.  If I change the jumper on the CMOS, it doesn't even buzz - is dead.  Change jumper back, and it boots.
I need help.  There MUST be some basic conflict in my SYSTEM, and I am getting very discouraged, however would really like to get two monitors working.  Any suggestions? What ver. of XP ? ?
Not all of them support dual monitors..."About Windows" on my computer says:
Windows XP Professional, Version 5.1 (With Service Pack 3 installed)I don't believe that card supports dual monitors...

ATI spec site is down right now.Well - that would make sense.  Do you have recommendation regarding an economical video card for two monitors - I guess I just assumed that if there were MULTIPLE ports, then it would support multiple monitors - tricked by an assumption again.  Here are some... Don't we have a mis-match of port types here?  Why didn't you buy a video card with VGA and DVI ports, or two DVI ports, instead of one with DVI and HDMI?Well - I think the answer is that I really didn't know what I was doing when I bought the video card.  I should have come here and talked to you folks first.  So, recently-purchased video card is going back.  Wanting to get another card - this time with two DVI ports (as per previous comment from Genius person.  The problem might be that I have a Lenovo desk-top case - it won't take a regular-sized video card.  Not sure if a two-DVI-port card will fit in.  Any suggestions?  And, thanks so much for your response and interest so far.

It should fit...unless it's a slim design case....then you would need whats called a low profile vid card.yep -it's a slim design case - so definitely will need low profile card.  Thanks.

Solve : Will this cpu bottleneck a Geforce 460gtx??

Answer»

I have purchased a Geforce 460gtx and wondered if this cpu is going to create a bottleneck. The cpu I have is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Proccessor 6400+ 3.21Ghz. Do you think that this cpu will bottleneck this card and if so what other cpu would you recommend? Thanks!!No, it won't. It should happily play the latest games with good performance.

If you do want less bottleneck, then you would have to upgrade to a new motherboard with tri-memory DDR3 and a i7 Core processor, it would be costly. Quote from: Azzaboi on September 09, 2010, 10:01:35 PM

If you do want less bottleneck, then you would have to upgrade to a new motherboard with tri-memory DDR3 and a i7 Core processor, it would be costly.
That's just plain wrong.  Think about it.

As for whether the CPU will be a bottleneck, please see my reply in your other thread, Crafty.Thought about it... what's wrong?

Quad Core performance wouldn't improve unless the application or game is multi-core enabled. It's not worth the cost of upgrade, since 3.21Ghz Duo Core is already a good speed.

i7 Core started off as a quad core redesigned with two threads per core, with one main feature in mind reducing bottlenecks in the system processor to make it work faster by being smarter technology.

Tri-memory DDR3 slots on a motherboard (rather than the standard duo slots) work together in 3 ways rather than 2, also reducing bottlenecks because of this re-design. DDR3 is also faster than standard DDR2.

I'm not saying it's needed and you would also probably have to upgrade the motherboard to support it. Rather costly!

In the end I think the current processor is fine to use, you can still play the latest games at a high resolution. This motherboard is showing it's age so I have decided I might purchase this (link below.) Can you tell me if that looks a good deal or if I could do better for that price. It comes with 3 years warranty and should last me a good few years right? Will this also stop any worries I have about bottle necks? Thanks!!

http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=47401&category_id=491&manufacturer_id=0&tid=Bingo, that will take you from latest games and onwards... but your paying for it and installing it.

Your talking about Med/High > High/Very High,
Turning a nice gaming machine into a monster gaming machine!

You don't NEED it right away, but if your looking to play hardcore games at max resolution and for the years to come, that would be a good investment (might end up costing the same as getting a new machine though if you go too crazy). That would give your new graphic card some serious backup! Quote from: Azzaboi on September 10, 2010, 12:37:17 PM
Thought about it... what's wrong?

<nonsense>

You know what a bottleneck is, right? you know, the neck of a bottle metaphorically manifesting itself in software/hardware, whereby one device is a "bottleneck" in the sense that it has lower performance then another? the CPU will not be always able to keep up with the GPU. the CPU is the bottleneck between them.

You contradict yourself. you say it won't bottleneck, and then say "if you want less bottleneck..." So which is it?

Ok, let me correct what I meant back then...
Quote
No, it won't be an issue using the 3.21Ghz Duo Core with the Geforce 460gtx. Your'll have a bit of bottlenecking with performance, but it should happily play the latest games with good performance.

However, if you do want less bottleneck (your'll never remove a bottleneck completely as one component would alway run faster or slower than another) upgrading to a new motherboard with tri-memory DDR3 and a i7 Core processor would probably be the best way to do this, but it would be costly.

Yes, I think I know what bottleneck is.

And I already said:

Thus that was my answer to the OP. Quote
and if so what other cpu would you recommend

To me, sounds a lot like they are...

I suggested the best cpu processor currently available to avoid bottlenecking issues.
(but you also have the motherboard to deal with)

What's your problem? I agree it sounded a bit like I was contradicting myself due to the way it was typed the first sentences. If it's however is the wrong answer, let me know and post something better rather than B*[email protected]#ing about a simply english grammer mistake. A yes/no answer is about as helpful as cheating at a multi-choice exam. And it's just as easy to casually recommend the fastest CPU out there to make yourself look like you know what you're talking about...Last time I checked there's a number of varies speeds for the i7 Core, I just said it's designed to reduce bottlenecking performance. Same deal with tri-memory... I also said upgrading to quad core wouldn't help much but that could of been a faster processor.

Quote

The post order picked a nice one and selected his own speed (super overclocked). Drools over

I don't personally own one myself, check my system specs, I use Duo Core. However, I've done my research and one of my friend in the past buying a new computer that asked for and followed my advice now has a beast of a computer even I'm jealous of. I would do it myself if I had the cash!

So do i need to upgrade my PSU to 600W to be able to run both graphics cards? When it says it requires a 300W PSU it does not mean that it draws 300 Watts.
Two things, have you got another PCI-e SLOT for the second card, and If you can add a second card I would upgrade your PSU to 400Watts, Corsair do some very reliable cheap PSU's
This chart below will show you the actual power DRAWN by various garphic cards.

Solve : Does this board have firewire on it??

Answer»

I am just building a computer and I am not sure where the firewire PORT is on on the motherboard? I at the the LEAD that has the number 1394 on the plug but I'm not sire where it goes. The board is in the link below, I'd appreciate if someone could explain where it goes. Thanks!!

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2010/05/07/gigabyte-ga-x58a-ud3r-motherboard-review/11394 is Firewire.  The ports are the 2 black ones in the middle of the picture.

Solve : Won't start??

Answer»

Gateway 504GR Win XP
Computer was working fine, the electricity in my neighborhood went out, once it came back on the computer will not start. When you push the power button it lights up blue and constantly blinking and as long as you hold the button in you can hear the hard drive etc powering up but as soon as you let let go of the button it's off. I have completely removed the power connection for a few MINTUES and held the power button on for 30 seconds but that didn't work.Given that this is a desktop computer you may RECOVER relatively easily (and probably not too expensively). You do not MENTION that you have a back up power supply device as part of your system. Assuming you do not then the most likely affected component of the computer is the power supply. If you have access to a power supply unit of equal or greater capacity i would suggest that you TRY that 1st. If your lucky the replacement will work then you simply need to purchase a compatible power supply unit. All this can readily done by yourself. Always ENSURE that the unit is unplugged when doing any of this and whatever you do do NOT open the power supply units in any attempt to try and fix it. truenorth

Solve : CD/DVD recorder can't 'see' blank discs?

Answer»

I've got an HP media center PC with a pentium 4, 1.28GB of ram, RUNNING Win XP media center edition with service pack 3. I've got a samsung cd/dvd read only drive (no problems) and a NEC cd/dvd read/write drive. I can read/write cd's, no problem. It will read commercially made dvds. I've written to dvds in the past, but not many. The NEC drive will read about 1/2 of them. The others it doesn't see, nor will it see any blanks (either dvd+r or dvd+rw format). It reports the device is not ready or that there is no media present. I've tried updating drivers, unloading it from device manager, and have installed a new burning program. Since it works with some dvds, I can't help but THINK it's some kind of configuration error. I'd hate to spend the time & money to replace the drive if it's not bad. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. How old is that drive?
DVD reading laser may be going out and writing laser may be out.

Quote

Since it works with some dvds
Define "some".
What burning program do you use?Drive is almost 6 yrs old. Burned DVDs using sonic 'record now', which came with the machine. The drive will read all commercially made DVDs, it will read my 'recovery' discs and a data disc containing some files I backed up. Something odd - last nite I inserted a dvd I burned backup files to and it read it just fine. Then I tried a different backup disc and 2 blanks and it didn't read any of them. I reinserted the first disc it originally read and now it wouldn't read it. You might be right about the drive going bad. Rather odd that device manager and some other diagnostic programs I ran all report the drive as working properly. Is it possible the writing laser would WORK on CDs and not DVDs?YES. Your drive has 4 lasers: CD read, CD write, DVD read, DVD write.
6 years is a long time for optical drive.
Your symptoms are typical for failing drive.4 different lasers, huh? Boy, just when you think you know everything...
I'd like your ADVICE on replacing the drive, if you don't mind. The two drives are currently connected with a single IDE ribbon with 2 connectors - the first going to the writeable drive (set as the master) and the end connector to the read only drive (slave). My motherboard has a spare SATA port (the hard drive uses the 1st one). Would it be advantagous to buy a drive utilizing the SATA (I've read that it's better than IDE)? If so, would it cause a problem copying from the IDE drive to the SATA drive? In case of an optical drive, there is no advantage of SATA drive vs IDE drive.
SATA is usually more expensive.
There is also no reason for having two optical drives, unless you have some special needs.

I always buy the real stuff. I have windows 7 ultimate and have tried to boot from both windows 64bit and windows 32bit. They are both on seperate disks.Perhaps there's a problem with the optical drive. These issues are sometimes very difficult to diagnose long distance. For games getting closer to like Crysis, you're not going to like it at all.

The processor is not terrible, though.thanx guys, I skipped on the deal cause I have ALREADY played the older games, I am playing Farcry 2 now. That graphics cards would LET you down. You now have 3 different Topics going on this new build...

Solve : no sound gateway laptop?

Answer»

Greetings All
I just purchased a refurb (hard drive wiped, fresh xp sp2 installed) gateway 600yg2 laptop.  I have no sound whatsoever (computer beeps, chimes or internet, I have no cd's or dvd's with me).  from the speakers or the headphone jack.  Of course volume is turned up.  device manager shows no faults with sound drivers.  Even tried downloading one of those bogus driver checkers and it said thtat the driver for my ESS Allegro PCI Audio was up to date.   Is the sound card integral to the mother board on this laptop?  What else can I check without disassembly ?
Thx in advance for any help.Purchasing such as a laptop either refurbish should atleast meet full functionality on software and hardware. You will either do some ROUND testings on the computer's capabilities and features. If this sound issue was without notice upon purchasing the refurbish laptop, I SUGGEST you return it and demand for any CD installler/s that should support your laptop.Thx for your response.  I am out of town and wont be able to return it for 2 wks.  Any other steps to TAKE prior to dis assembly ?TRY going to this site : http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp?cmpid=topnav

Prompts you for some product verification, I am not just sure about your refurbish laptop THOUGH. But you may be able to find your suggested sound driver.I'd keep in mind that dis-assembly will most likely Void any warranty you may have...jason2074 - Thankyou! - Downloaded driver for my laptop from the link you provided - I have SOUND. Solve : Can anyone suggest a good motherboard??

Answer»

I decided to skip on a what sounded like a good deal(another post) and have decided to build my own pc(first ever) I am currently using a Dell Inspirion 518 (4GB DDR2 Ram, intel pentium dual E2220 CPU 2.40 ghz, and an ATI radeon HD3450 with 256mb video card) only problem- it is a rent to own deal so the tower is going to cost me 660.00 at the end and the monitor which is a 21.5 wide screen is gonna cost another 330.00 and its running Vista 32-bit. I would rather build one nd own it rather than keep making payments and have something happen like work slows down or something and then after I paid all that money I end up with NOTHING if its not paid for. SO I need help with a good motherboard to get started. I do play games like far cry 2, call of duty, things like that- mostly FPS games, I also down load music, burn cds, watch dvds - if anyone can help and throw out a few suggestions that would be great, actually if someone knows about good video cards, ram CPU's that would also be helpful. Thanx in advanceI have been reading alot on motherboards and CPU's and was wandering how this would work out
Motherboard- Gigabyte- GA-G41M  Socket775
CPU- Intel Core 2 Duo E7500
and the Ram would be Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800mhz 4GB(2x2GB)I like the Asus and the Gigabyte boards best for gaming. You usually find they have a board that is specifically geared towards gaming and OVERCLOCKING. As for whats best depends on how much you WANT to spend. I have just spend £1000 on just building a tower.By this if you want a really good game experience and a machine that will last sometime before an upgrade is needed. Or is this to much money

If I was you I would get an Asus or Gigabyte board for games. The cpu in your last post will play games ok, as will that amount of ram. However, I would look at getting a geforce 260gtx if I was you, lots of people will be selling used ONES now since the Geforce 460Gtx has come out, so you should pick up a Geforce 260gtx fairly cheap.I just checked on newegg for the board and a CPU you mentioned, the board is only 140.00 and a CPU for 100 Quote from: shanes76 on September 13, 2010, 06:14:55 PM

Sounds a good deal, it's a good board and cpu, but remember all the other parts you have to get aswell. Get a Geforce 260gtx and some good ram and you are good for gaming.the CPU was an Intel Pentium G6950 Clarkdale 2.8ghz 73 watt Dual core with 3mb L3 Cache and could you recomened a video card, ram and a psu that would bundle WELL with these? Any Geforce 260GTX. Psu, I would get a coolermaster 650watt.. I would get a good make of Psu because lots of people make the mistake of trying to save money on the psu when it plays an important part. (Click link below for ram.)

Well it should be alright then, I didn't check that..Sorry. Also, I just went on the newegg site and saw that the Geforce 460GTX isn't much more expensive then the Geforce 260gtx, So may aswell get he Geforce 460GTX. ok, now all I need is a hard drive, case, and OS Quote from: shanes76 on September 13, 2010, 06:52:05 PM
ok, now all I need is a hard drive, case, and OS

Cases are cheap enough, just get one with a few fans on to keep the temps down. Os, you will need windows 7 to run 4 gig of ram, Vista 64bit will do it but I don't like vista . Harddrive, just get one that runs at 7200rpm. You could get one that runs at 1000rpm, but I think they are to expensive. Also, I would get that cpu you saw in that bundle, it's far better then the one you suggested.

Trying to get my girlfriends PRINTER to work.  Has a Lexmark 705 and using Vista.  Can't figure which port to use.  Shows she has the latest driver for it, but still no connection.  Your thoughts on where I should go next please. So can we correctly assume that this printer has NEVER as yet been properly installed on your "girlfriend's computer? What do you mean by "Can't figure which port to use." ? This statement is also confusing "Shows she has the latest driver for it". If you have never successfully installed it how do you know she has the latest drivers for it? It is very difficult at this point to assist you because of the confusing nature of your post. However the one thing i can say is that in a great deal of failures of printers to work (when doing an initial install) is caused by a failure to STRICTLY" follow  the manual's precise order of installation. So at this point that is where i would direct you. truenorth Quote from: Nealf on September 11, 2010, 08:10:58 AM

Any kind. you were the one mentioning that you "didn't know which port to use" Clearly it stems from the PRINT dialogs whereby you select the printer to print to? most printers today are USB printers and generally create their own device name (USB#### is a common one). But you should be printing to a "port" but rather to a printer, since the print dialog will state which printer you are printing to. Either way, your rather vague "I don't know which port to use" is what caused a router to enter the discussion- ports are generally used for network devices (printing via the network involves ports and printer sharing and so forth). Last time I had to INVOLVE myself with ports regarding printers was with a DOS-based machine. So the assumption that printer sharing is involved is not off-the-wall given the information posted. Correct, BC.  His comment, "Can't figure which port to use", plus the fact that that Lexmark printer is apparently a networkable printer, based on INFO at Lexmark Prevail Pro705, lead me to conclude he may be talking about connecting to a port on a router.  Based on the info at that link, that printer can, indeed, be connected to a router, apparently either wireless or cabled, as a network printer.  It would work the same as my Brother printer that's connected to my router, allowing me to print from any of the three computers I have connected to the router.

Solve : Help with my Compaq Presario 2100?

Regarding my compaq presario 2100, it was infected with a virus and i decided to FORMAT it. During the first attempt using windows xp installer the laptop can not detect some of the dll files. since this laptop can not boot to a usb, because i am planning to use my external optical drive in installing os on that laptop. so i decided to remove the hdd and insert it to an enclosure and hook it to my pc. I install windows 98 on it using my PC. The process was successful, so i install again the hdd to my compaq presatio laptop. I was surprise with the result because it keeps on having a blue screen. Sometimes it hung up during boot process or right after the desktop appears in screen. Last day i try to turn it on but there are no more display i see in screen. I also observe that the cpu fan turns for about 3 o 5 seconds and after that it stop but the led lights in the laptop were up. what could be the problem of this?

Please help. i need this laptop badlySounds very much like you need to find a legit XP CD...How can i install any OS on that laptop in yet it doesn't have any display on screen. i can not see even the boot process. It'll never work. You can't install Windows on ONE computer, move the hard drive to another computer and expect it to work.
Windows installation is tied up to computer's hardware.

My friend suggest that to me and he is doing that for a couple of years. He is a tech ni one of the company near our place. I have no idea. I'm not a hardware guy and I never tried anything like that.

Now, from your description, it looks like at least on-board video chip was dying as of lately and it finally passed away
Or, a whole motherboard was dying and it gave up recently.

I assume, this must be rather old laptop, so money-wise, it doesn't make sense to travel to a computer shop.\
I believe, we've been fighting a lost cause here....Thanks for the REPLY. i already solve the problem. right after i disassemble 2nd time around i turn on the laptop and let the processor temp rise and the cpu fan turns on after than i turn it of and turn on again and press and hold the power button. after that i turn on again and whala it already have a display.Good news then

This will be my first pc build, I play games alot, not online gaming, but I play alot of first person shooter games like COD, farcry things like that. I have picked some parts out at Microcenter and would like some input on how well this would perform, or if I should change any components or what not.
Case- GZ-PHZA30 mid tower case, supports ATX,mATM boards
Mother board- GA-MA770T- UD3P AM3 socket 770 ATX supports Phenom II X4, X3, Athlon X2 , FSB up to 2600mhz, DDR3 dual channel 1333, 1066 - up to 16MB
CPU- Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition - includes CPU, fan, heatsink, clip assembly
RAM - OCZ Tech Gold Series XTC Cooler DDR31333 (pc10666) Dual channel memory 4GB
Hard Drive- Seagate Barracuda- 250GB 7200 RPM Sata 3.0GB/s
DVD Burner- Samsung w/ Lightsrcibe, 22X dvd RW with dual layer support
Power source- Alpha 500 Watt Black ATX
Cooling fans- case says it has 3- 1 side, 1 rear and 1 exhaust and are 80mm fans, so I picked 3 80mm blue lead fans
Video Card- MSI Radeon HD 5450- 1024 MB DDR3 PCIe 2.1 X16 LOW profile
OS- windows 7 system builder

Are these components ok, or will something give trouble along the way? Do I need to swap out any parts? The total for this pc is $550.00

... or will something give trouble along the way?....

About 5 MONTHS ago, I built a new computer.
Went with OCZ Gold Ram.
Had to send it back, wait two weeks to get the replacement.

The vendor (Newegg) *did* replace it... can't complain there.
But -  it really is depressing, to have your brand new computer just sitting, doing nothing... waiting for two weeks.   And the vendor only warrants parts for thirty days!   So...   that two weeks cuts that in half!  You only have a few days left, to find out if something else is going to need replacing.

Read the reviews on Newegg.
True, they are likely skewed.  Those with a bad experience are apt to post.
But... if you see a massive percentage complaining... that's telling you something.
The ram I bought, within weeks...  had almost 50% of the posts as complaints against it.
So... from my experience, and following the reviews online at Newegg (until Newegg ceased selling that ram),  I do not recommend OCZ.

I've never used it, but I've seen good comments about G.Skill, if you are looking for another brand.
See if anybody else here has something to say about G.Skill, before you make a purchase.

Also:
Go here:    http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3257#ov
Is that the motherboard you are considering?
If it is, then click on the  "Memory Support List" button.   You can download the list of ram that is recommended by Gigabyte, for that motherboard.    It is called the QVL   ...     Qualified Vendors List.
If you choose one from that list, and also ask around and look for reviews and comments on your selection - then perhaps you can minimize your chances of having ram problems.

For the record: The new replacement ram I received failed Memtest at first, too.  VERY depressing.   But then, after reading around,  I contacted OCZ.
OCZ *was* prompt in communications, and recommending settings in BIOS, for my ram, with my motherboard (Asus).     With these setting changes,  then the new ram passed Memtest testing.

When you do your build, test the memory - first thing.    I'm glad I did.   I suppose I'd have had strange things happening, had I just gone ahead and tried to install Windows.      Sad as it was, at least I knew the memory was bad.
Go here: http://www.memtest.org/
You can download what you need, - free - to make a bootable CD.
Boot it, and let it run for many hours.
Somebody here can probably tell you a minimum number of "passes" to let it run,  so that you can know if your ram is good or not.

Solve : System runs slow when I have disk in dvd drive??

Answer»

I have NEVER ever seen this problem before posted and wondered if someone here can work it out for me. It's been going on for sometime, but I just kept on FORGETTING to post it on here. What happens is this... When I have any DVD or cdrom disk in my DVD rw drive my internet explorer and out LOOK express take ages to open, it takes like 2 minutes just to open the google home page. With no disks in it is fine and all works great. What do you think causes this? ThanksDoes the LED indicator on the CD/DVD drive indicate the drive is being accessed while this happens?  Is there motor noise? Quote from: Aegis on September 16, 2010, 01:45:50 AM

Does the LED indicator on the CD/DVD drive indicate the drive is being accessed while this happens?  Is there motor noise?

No, the light goes off and no motor noise is heard. Can I also add that this happens only when I boot the machine up with a dvd that's been left in the DVD drive on shutdown. If I boot it up without a DVD in the drive and then add a DVD once it is booted, it's ok. So for some reason it doesn't like me to leave a DVD in the drive. Not a big problem, but rather an  ANNOYING one.
It sounds like have the CD/DVD drive set up to 'Boot from CD' in the BIOS. When you boot up your PC it is trying to read the disc before it boots, but in saying that, the disc drive should make a sound like its reading the disc.

To avoid annoyance, take out the disc before shutdown!!  Run msconfig and CHOOSE "selective startup" (disable all startup items) and reboot. Then open Outlook or IE. Do they open normally or slowly?

Solve : Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB Brick Question?

Answer»

So I have been working in the tech field for sometime and I know about the problems with the SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.11 500GB drives going into brick mode. I wanted to buy two of them because from what I knew about their problem was that it's a firmware problem with the drives and that's why they go into brick mode in a few months? Now if I buy them and update their firmware from seagate's website I should be good then and no more brick modes? Does the updated firmware say that it addressed the bricking issue? Quote from: talontromper on September 12, 2010, 04:18:36 PM

Does the updated firmware say that it addressed the bricking issue?

That's what the other techs that I worked with said. And I have been researching it for a while and have found a lot of it having to do with the firmware. Quote from: talontromper on September 12, 2010, 04:18:36 PM

Apparently I was told also that they have mechanical problems in that model. So I think I won't take the chance with them. I was planning on putting them in a mirroring raid mode. I figured it would be a cheap fix if one DIED. But I don't think I would like to replace drives EVERY 4 months. haha Let's see if i got this straight....you want to find a HDD that had known issues...and then buy 2 of them and set them up in a Raid enviornment ? ? My thought exactly. Whats the point in buying them if they have problems? I'd love to hear the reason behind this one. Quote

He says that he is still thinking about getting one, even though he knows they have had problems. There are other brands of harddrive that have never had this problem, so for that reason alone I would opt to get one of the other ones.He said what he said...until we hear back we'll never know.I was wanting to do a mirroring raid with them. But I only thought the problem was related to firmware with the DRIVE going into brick mode. Then someone said on ANOTHER forum that they are also known for mechanical problems as well. Which I was not aware of. So I will be staying away from them.

Solve : PC shuts itself off a few minutes after powering it on.?

Answer» YEP. I'm back... and about to hang myself lol

So, this morning, I went and turned my PC on - went to check some e-mail... and out of nowhere, the PC shut itself off.

I had this happen while playing a game - but never after only a few minutes of powering on the PC.

So, I powered up again and quickly checked CPUID... and my processor temps are high. They shouldn't be this high after the PC's been off all night.

Screenshot:

Now, I'm just confused. It's got a new motherboard, new HS/fan for the CPU, new graphics card, a couple new CASE fans installed, a cooling slot fan for the graphics card...

Help?  ... again..

*I forgot to mention that those core temps usually are at 41-44C after powering up my computer and at idle. That's why I'm thinking something is up there.

*Also forgot to mention that things have been running fine since putting the new mobo in in July - until I started having problems with graphics while playing a game a month or so after that - which I fixed by putting in a new video card last week. Things were fine again after doing that - everything was normal. It's like my computer will be OK for awhile... then out of nowhere decide it wants to get all screwy in some way.1. When you installed the heatsink/fan, did you use heatsink compound? (a kind of paste that you smear on the top of the cpu before you install the heatsink, having first removed any old compound)

2. Is the fan actually turning?
I would take out the cpu out, clean off any compound that remains on it and then start over again. make sure the right amount of compound is used between the heatsink. Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 12, 2010, 07:24:10 AM

1. Yep, I did

2. Yep, it is/was.

Yes, that's what I just finished doing - out of desperation and thinking (hoping) maybe the CPU or the fan just needed to be reseated. I installed the fan a few weeks ago, so I wonder why it needed attention.

Taking both the CPU fan and the CPU out and putting them back in cleaned - and with new thermal paste - seems to have helped. My temps are back down to 27/33C - which is actually much lower than before. I used a new thermal paste this time, too. The one I used before was Tuniq TX-2. This new paste I used actually came free with my purchase when I bought the HS/Fan off of Newegg - Arctic MX-2.

Hopefully this has fixed the problem. I ran on CH out of panic, I'm sorry about that! But I know I always get awesome help and suggestions here. My computer is my work computer, so when anything goes wrong (as things have been), I get all worried and panicky. Thanks so much guys - I'll be back if the PC shuts off again! lol But let's hope it doesn't.Glad to hear you had a good result. Arctic has a good reputation; MX-2 is marketed as "high performance" heatsink compound. So is Tuniq TX-2. Here is a review which says that Tuniq TX-2 performed slightly better than Arctic MX-2 and costs slightly less, so maybe it was the way it was applied.

I actually came across a similar Web site (can't find it now for some reason) when trying to figure out which thermal paste I should buy. Tuniq TX-2 was tested against a few other compounds and came out on top, so naturally I went and purchased it.

It probably was an error on my part, though. Maybe I did apply it wrong - or didn't put enough on - or maybe even too much, if that's possible. But I did apply it the way it was recommended, which was the "pea-size" method. So I have no idea, lol

But I had the Arctic MX-2 sitting in its package still, so I figured I'd TRY it this time instead of the Tuniq. As long as everything keeps running normally, I'm happy lol

Quick question, just so I can understand better: how is it possible for a CPU to reach 70C+ in just a few minutes of running? I find it amazing that it heats up so quickly. Takes my oven forever to get to 200F... I could almost bake cupcakes on a CPU. Hmm. Quote from: Gemini6 on September 12, 2010, 09:05:30 AM

Modern microprocessors use a lot of energy for their physical size. At full power, the Athlon x2 64 6000+ puts out 125 Watts. When idling somewhat less. The actual cpu die is the size of the nail on your little finger. (I believe Americans call it your "pinkie".) Your oven might use one or two or three thousand Watts but it is a lot bigger than that. When the fan stopped on my Pentium 4 it went up to 84 degrees Celsius in about 3 minutes.

Thank you 1.check your CPU fan it is WORKING properly spin
2.than use heetsink paste on processor
3.check your CPU fan's pin properly connected to the mother board Quote from: thakurji on September 15, 2010, 03:38:17 AM

Solve : Computer shuts down after 3 to 5 seconds?

Answer»

I have a computer that is about 5 years old.  It is running a dual boot on separate  HD's, (XP and Win 7), AMD  3200, 8rda3+PRO, 3 sticks of ram, ATI  radeon 2600 HD, dual sata wd hd's.  All components have been tested individually, and work fine, and I ran a memory test on the ram, it is good, but the PC starts, then shuts down after 3 to 5 seconds.  If I unplug the PSU for 10 seconds, the I can restart the PC, but it again starts for 3 to 5 seconds and shuts down. By removing all of the unnecessary components, I can get to the bios screen, however, when I plug in the hd's, it reverts back to the same problem.  I bought a new PSU and when I plugged it into the MO, the PC started by itself when the PSU was half plugged in, which is when I replaced the MO.  I am hoping someone has an idea or two.  Thanks Is the CPU fan operating properly ? ?
The thermal sensor may have gone bad....replace the fan Fan was replaced, along with CPU, and correct amount of thermal paste was used.Fan good
New PSU
Thermal paste applied

I'm stumped. Quote

however, when I plug in the hd's, it reverts back to the same problem.

I figure the hard drives may be the problem. Do you have another computer? If you do, use it to BURN a LIVE CD of linux (whichever distribution you prefer). Then remove the hard drives from the other computer and boot from the CD. If the computer boots up to linux and stays on, then it's your hard drives. Remember to change boot order for the CD!it may seem like a long shot but try a diffrent set of RAM and a diffrent hdd as one of the device's could have failed, i have had a simmilar problem before and i replaced my harddrive and it has sorte the problemA HDD/RAM ISSUE will NOT cause this scenario...Is it at all possible the case is the problem?  I don't know is the case's power on switch could do something like this, but maybe it could be something like a short. I'd check to make sure the motherboard isn't making contact with the case anywhere, or even try starting it outside the case. Although, personally, I wouldn't want to do that until I've exhausted other options….

It sounds odd that it would be fine until you plug in the hard drives. I'd consider trying to reset the CMOS settings and double checking to make sure everything is hooked in correctly and nothing is making contact with the case.Hard drives have been tested in another PC, work fine. Have not tried another case yet, but did remove wires going to power button and attempted to start..no luck.  Removed MO from case, placed on non-conductive surface and tried to start, again, no luck. When you removed it from the case to test what exactly was hooked up ? ?When I removed it form the case, I hooked up one stick of ram at a time, going through all three sticks, the MO, tried with 2 different video cards, the keyboard, and the monitor. I tried it both with and without the hard drive.Minimum components to POST:

1 stick of RAM
CPU/fan
Vid card
monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
PSU

So ti sounds like you did it properly to test...

The only 2 other things i can think of is the PSU may be faulty even though new...
Or your MBoard has a crack/defect in it...

What brand and wattage is this PSU ? ?The PSU is an LPK2 400WATT, and the MO has been replaced.  Me thinks the PC is possessed with a poltergeist!...HE HE.  I am really stumped.I don't think its the case because I removed the BOARD from the case and still the same problem.Let me get this straight. You have replaced the motherboard and Psu and it is still doing the exact same thing as before? Did you replace the board like for like? Or is it a different board? Have you made sure that you have connected the wire to the internal connecter near to the cpu, properly?

Solve : Help im a noob?

Answer»

I have a Gateway GT5220. My brothers HP  computer broke. He has some good parts in there i was wondering if i can take his VIDEO card  and ram  to put in my computer.

The video card is xfx 9400 GT  Standard 550 128bit DDR2 512MB 800MHz 1400MHz Fansink Minimum Power Supply Requirement: 350 Watt

The ram of my brothers computer is a 1 GB pc2-5200

This is my computer
Windows 7
AMD Athlon® 64 X2 3800+, dual core processor with AMD64 technology
2.0 GHz
200 MHz system bus
512KB × L2 cache
3 gb ram (expandable to 4gb)
power supply: 300 watt
pc2-4200  DDR2 533 MHz
RAM has to be compatible, if it's the same type or compatible with the motherboard and other memory it will then run FINE but at the slowest one(s) speed (so don't add it if it's slower, it will just slow the others down).

The graphic card will need a better power supply (PSU) to run stable or even startup.  Quote

Not neccisarrily true.

I have a 9500 GT on a 305 watt power supply. A 9400 GT on a 300 watt should be fine. If you want to be sure, look for +12V amperage on your power supply. If it is > or = to 18A, then it will work.

Yes. Yes.

Yes, it will work, but I'd get a board that supports DDR3 instead of only DDR2.

SATA is backwards compatible, it will just run slower on older SATA.

It should.

If they are both the same form factor, it should fit.

I would get a FASTER duel core over a slower quad core. Rarely are all the cores utilized.

Possibly. Have you tried running it without the battery in?Many thanks for response. Yes I have tested with battery out does not change condition. When the power charger is connected no warning led is lit also when I hit the power BOTTON all three LEDS light up and fan starts and then no power ? Is it possible battery has some SORT of circuit control built in and if the battery is dead this could be causing problem. Battery is not cheap to buy and I prefer to hold off just in case this does not fix the problem.
