Solve : No Power to Sony Vaio?

Answer»

Apologies if this is not in the right section.

I was using my laptop last week and all of a sudden it shut off. I tried rebooting and unplugging the power cord etc and still it wouldn't turn back on. I tried changing the fuse in the plug but still nothing.
NOTE: I wasn't using the battery at the time as it has just run out of power and ever charging.

I plugged the cord in another area and NOTICED the LITTLE green light on the square power brick thing wasn't turning on. I DECIDED it must be a fault with the lead so sought to buy another one. I opted to buy a brand new official Sony one so it wouldn't damage my laptop and then thought it must be time to buy a new battery so I bought and received them TODAY. I plugged the new lead into the wall etc and my laptop still doesn't boot up there is no lights to show power nothing. However I decided to stick the new battery on and it booted up so whatever power the  battery had it fired my laptop up but now the battery has died and I have no way of getting my laptop to turn on.

Does anyone know or have EXPERIENCED what might be the cause of this? I can only assume where i plug the wire into the back of my laptop is not allowing the power from the lead to connect to the laptop. Quote from: jamiebmoore on April 28, 2012, 07:10:11 AM

Yes, most likely you are correct.  Take it to a shop that specializes in repairing laptops.

Solve : Stereo and PC both reset/shorted...?

Answer»

I was watching a video on my PC using VLC media player and both my PC and stereo SUDDENLY reset.  I haven't made any recent changes to my PC at all.  I have noticed that when I updated my graphics card driver a couple of weeks ago, that it has added a new audio device to play audio through HDMI.  I have my SOUNDCARD set as the default device though and hasn't CAUSED any problems to date.  Both still seem to work okay, but it has done this a couple of times today.  I don't want to risk damaging anything if something is wrong.  Any ideas what it could be??

Here's the details of what hardware/software I am using:

Windows 7 64-bit ultimate
i5-2500k CPU
Asus P8H67 Mb
8GB Samsung DDR-3 RAM
WD 1TB HDD

AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card
(Catalyst VERSION 12.3)

USB M-Audio Connectiv soundcard

Sony stereo connected via phono cablesAre they on an AC power strip ? ?

If so it's time to replace it...Yes they are, thanks for the quick response.Anytime...

Welcome Aboard !

Solve : Looking to replace my Radeon HD 6450?

Answer»

(Computer listed on my profile. Don't judge me for having an hp desktop; it was cheaper than building my own computer for even near the power I have now.)

My resolution is 1920 x 1080.

I've been pretty disappointed with my computer's gaming abilities. Skyrim runs pretty POORLY, and I'm FAIRLY certain it's because of my awful GRAPHICS card. Now, I don't expect to be running it on very high or anything, I just want a basic upgrade. My card should be performing on high (according to Steam), but I can't even get it to perform well at medium, which should be easy for this card. In the experience index, my graphics are rated at a 4.9 and my gaming graphics at a 6.3 (this is how I know this rating system is garbage).

Requirements:
I would like the price to be under $100, with shipping. I'm not looking to have the most powerful. I want decent.
I don't want to have to install any other FANS. If it has heating/cooling problems, I'm simply not interested.
If the card has a ton of troubles with older games (KOTOR, Diablo II, Icewind Dale, etc), I'm not interested.
I don't want a card that is more powerful than what my processor/ram can handle. This upgrade is to make my computer usable for another 1- 1.5 years before I build my own.

Ideas:
I'm thinking maybe the HD 5550, which would obviously be a small upgrade, though it's supposed to outperform the 6450 by quite a bit.
I've also been thinking about the GeForce gt440, which would be an actual upgrade and give me a THOROUGHLY decent card.

So what do you guys think? Which card would fit best with my computer? Or, if you have other ideas, I'd be happy to hear them! Thanks so much =]I'd go for a Radeon 6670. That would cost you about $80.

I ended up spending like 109 with shipping and a one year warranty. With the mail-in rebate, it should be about $89. Thanks for your help.

I'll post again when I get it installed. It works great and looks beautiful.

Solve : Advice on Factory Refurbished Laptop?

Answer» HELLO all,

I've been doing some preliminary searches for a new laptop, and I noticed a lot of sites like techforless that offers factory refurbished models. While a lot of them are within my price range, I'm a bit worried that I would end up with a laptop that only lasts a few months.

So my main question is - has anyone ever bought a factory refurbished laptop before? Good/bad experiences?

Thanks in advance!First of all, I know nothing g about the vendor you mention.
Second, refurbished COMPUTERS, done by qualified PEOPLE, are as reliable as the new model in piratical terms.

Let me clarify that last statement. The real cost of ownership is hard to estimate for each unit. The statistics, when available, show a high infant mortality for new equipment. Therefore a practice  of some good refurbish vendors is to OFFER the same warranty as new equipment.

If you find a refurbished unit fro a repeatable vendor at half the cost of the new model, yet with the same warranty, your cost of ownership is going to be much lower overall. Buy there are exceptions. Some times you get new equipment that never, ever has to go in for repair. But you can not predict that.

My point is: If the refurbish and the new unit has the same warranty, and the vendors have been in business for awhile, there has to be some LOGIC that says new and refurbish are near equal.

But if it is only a 90 day warranty, head for the door.

And yes, I have bought refurbished. This Dell i am typing on now acts as good as a new Dell of the same model.  Except the F5 key is touchy. If the determination to purchase a refurbished then in addition to Geek's comment re the warranty and reputation of the vendor i also offer an additional option. Most manufacturers of computers offer refurbished units themselves. So concentrate some research there.truenorth

You seem to have decided to upgrade your current computer hardware. Why? What is it you are hoping to improve?truenorth

My GPU fan has recently died so i've been using alternative WAYS to cool it.
I've finally decided that it's time to buck up and buy something new. (I game quite a bit).

My PSU is fully working, but no decent CARD is going to run off of 300W.

I guess you could say it's more of a replacement than an upgrade.

EDIT: I know I could just replace the fan on the GPU, but I wanted to upgrade because I've got the money right now.
Of course it is absolutely your right to decide how you spend your money but personally i find the basis of your decision to be illogical "I wanted to upgrade because I've got the money right now." You are prepared to spend aprox. $300.00 for just those two components. It is my BELIEF for that amount of money you could probably find something that would offer at least the ability to match what you MIGHT achieve with the replacement of the two components that you have chosen. Particularly if you were amenable to refurbished or bare bones computers.I urge you to do some online research to see what you can find.If your geography permits i suggest having a look at what Tiger Direct has to offer. truenorthI've been meaning to upgrade for quite a while and with the fan dying it just gave me more incentive. Having the money at this very time was just lucky.

Thank you very much for your post though, I'll see what I can dig up after doing some research. I've never upgraded or bought new parts before, so your insight is much appreciated.Your very welcome.Take a few days of research and you might find something that excites you. In some ways what your inclination to do can be compared to putting a higher performance engine in an automobile but can the transmission handle the power If you improve the video card would you also like to have surround sound will you need upgraded RAM. truenorthWith any upgrade here's the 3 things you should consider and provide for feedback...
A) Budget
B) What are the primary uses for the PC ?
C) What components of the old PC can be used in the upgrade ?

Solve : HP Color LaserJet 5550 Printing Issue?

Hello everyone,

We using this printer as a network printer, installed on W2k and shared on the network, all client PC are using OS XPSP3. The problem we are facing is the following:
Whenever a user prints for instance a document of 2 pages and on the number of COPIES e he puts 2 so that the printer can then print 2 pages of each PAGE, TOTALLY 4 pages, instead the printer takes out 8 pages, and if on the number of pages its 4 it will print 16 pages instead of 8. I find this so strange, tried some troubleshooting, like defaulting the printer to manufacture settings, changing some settings on the printers software to no avail.

Please help.  First of all, are you sure you have the CORRECT driver for each of the computers?Well i presume i do, because we have been using the printer for two years and it as since been working fine, its only recently that we have been facing this issue, the printer prints just fine, its just these amount of pages.quaxo after your question i GAVE it a thought, i went to the HP website downloaded and installed the latest (up to date) drivers, and it did the trick, issue solved. Thanks to all those who viewed as well.Good to hear. That's what I figured it was.

Solve : 'No signal'?

Answer»

I'm about to give up. My computer was running well when I came home but I had a few lag spikes in games so I decided to (like I normally would) open the computer up and check the 9600GT graphics card. It shouldn't of had been overheating since I have 4 fans.
When I had finished reslotting the graphics card and some other wires, I had no response when I had turned the monitor on so I reslotted more and about an hour or two later I found out it was a little plug called 'SW Reset' had been placed in the wrong place. Time to try to turn it on again, nope, no signal.  Before I began reslotting everything, I heard a harddisk beep instantly after startup and then it would continue to run fine.
I lost my patience after five hours of the VGA having no signal so I decided to take out EVERY plug and the graphics card and put them back in, now I have no harddisk beep at all and no signal. During the whole time the fans and lights still worked perfectly. I'm desperate for help.. please.

OS: Windows 8 Developer Preview
Graphics card: PNY 9600GT OC
Processor: AMD 5600+ - something something.
Monitor: HP 2211x 22"

I have tried restarting, power off'ing, changing sides of the VGA cables.
P.S I have DVI and VGA, both have no signal. My computer could run games smooth as *censored* until I got these random lag spikes.

USUAL core temperature: 50-85°c

Usual core temperature: 50-85°c

Are you talking about the CPU or GPU?

If that's your "usual" temperature, do you mean usual when the system is idle, or usual under load?

If that's your usual idle temperature for the CPU, there's a heat problem. Check your CPU fan and clean the heat sink and reapply thermal paste.

SW reset is the reset switch on the front of the case. It shouldn't have had an effect on anything. Just make sure it's on the two pins it should be.

Sounds to me like while you were in the case, something else has been KNOCKED out of place or unplugged. Are you getting a POST beep when you turn it on? (a single beep indicating the POST has passed)

What do you mean the hard disk is beeping? Hard disks don't beep. Hard disks, unless failing, should be almost silent. Are you sure you're not mistaking the motherboard's POST beep for something else? Quote from: quaxo on April 27, 2012, 12:24:15 AM

I'm a beginner at computers so I'll try my best,
The temperature I was talking about was the main computer, it's 80c when playing a game which is high detailed. Idle is usually 50-60c.
I don't know how else to explain it. The graphics card is hardly hot.

I managed to get my fans working now and everything in the right place (I think) but the only thing that won't work is my monitor. I have done everything to try it (the VGA cable) to get signal to the monitor. I have checked the back of the ports and the cable and there are no obvious signs of damage in the pins. Tried DVI, didn't work either, so It's not my VGA cable. The back of my monitor is fine and also the back of the computer. Took the graphics card out and checked it, no signs of damage over overheating either.

As in harddisk beeping, before all this 'no signal' started I got a single 'system boot up' beep and that was it. Now I'm getting a long beep and then two short beeps and have researched this and it comes up as a graphics card/RAM failure. I have reslotted my RAM and checked my graphics card again but I just can't find whats going on. I even tried booting without the RAM, still gives me the long beep and 2 short.

Please help, I have no clue where to go..Your CPU is running too hot at 50-85°c, which is probably part of your problems. As I said before, check your CPU fan and make sure it's working and also reapply thermal paste.

As for the beep code, video and memory have different beep codes, but depending on the make and model of the motherboard, that code will vary depending on what BIOS it's using. It should be telling you ONE or the other, but as far as I know don't of them share a beep code for memory and video.

Obviously, something is still not connected right. Double check that everything is connected correctly. I'm pretty sure most models of the Nvidia 9600GT required power directly from the power supply, have you reconnected it as well?Had a long chat with Transfusion and it was a faulty motherboard. We discussed buying new parts but I would rather buy a new one which was portable so we both agreed on Sager NP6165 laptop.

Thanked. Not sure how that conclusion was reached, but ok.

Solve : HP Officejet 6500A Plus Wireless Scanning question?

Answer»

I would like to scan multiple documents and save them to one FILE, however, I can't seem to figure out how to do this with this printer.  I DOWNLOADED the 250 PAGE manual for it and under the Scan topic it doesn't tell you how to do this.  It only tells you how to Scan and save one document at a time.   Does anyone out there have this printer and have you figured out how to do this.  My last printer was an HP that was one step down from this one and I had no problem finding multi document scanning directions on line for that.  Thank youMy HP 6500 gives me a bad time. It works, but not the way I wish. If I use the HP resolution enter I find a area where I can scan several documents at once. But in my favorite Photo Editor I can only do them one at a time by hand.
And lately it is telling me the printer is disconnected when it is not. It looks like I will have to install it again.OK. I am back. Turned off the HP 6500 and the laptop. Wait a bit. Turn both back on and try again. This time the HP center will come up when I click its ICON as seen in the screenshot below. That is the only way it will do multiple scans for of a mufti-page document. As far as I know.
Thank you for your reply, however, the HP 6500 and the HP 6500A Plus have TOTALLY different Solution Center pages.  I had the HP 6500 before this printer and had no problem putting multiple documents in one file, but this one is totally different.  Actually, when I click the Solution Center Icon on my desktop, it tells me that my printer isn't connected to the computer, however, if I click on another HP Icon on the desktop, it brings up the Solution Center.  Weird.  I did finally find a solution to the problem at this link:
 http://bit.ly/HPscan2011
It takes a while to load the webpage, but it is the solution to the problem the manual does not cover.  Thanks againThanks for sharing.

As a child I was, apparently, extremely precocious, such that when other children of my age were still babbling baby talk, I was not only fully fluent but ALSO given to asking QUESTIONS that my parents were unable to answer. I remember distinctly asking my father how it was that music came from the radio which sat on a shelf in our kitchen. He told me that inside was a complete orchestra of tiny men. I also remember dragging a chair so that I was ABLE to climb up and peer inside the operating radio (it had a perforated back made of a kind of fibre* board) and I definitely remember the disappointment when I just saw a bunch of glowing vacuum tubes. However I later developed a lifelong interest in electronics, so maybe something good came of it.

Solve : Considering upgrade; Please Help?

Answer»

I am looking for more oomph in my desktop computer and I have limited funds, and some difficult choices to make.

To start, here is my current configuration:
Stock Dell Dimension e520 With the following specifications and additions.
(If I don't specify the part, it's stock, according to the link)
Processor: Core2 Duo E6320 1.86GHz
RAM: 8GB DDR2 333MHz
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6670 1gb GDDR5
My big problems are the 305W power supply, and the dated MoBo.

My first reaction is to upgrade my PSU and get a more powerful graphics card, but i'm not sure if that's the best, considering my weak processor, and older mobo. I think a more powerful graphics card would be severely hindered by the dated parts, thus making the investment a waste, but I don't really know for sure how that works.

I have $275 to spend, and I'm looking to increase my gaming performance with Fraps.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.Matt8D;

Yes, you may benefit from a new PSU (power supply unit) . But why do you think so?  Apparently you put in a graphics card and did not upgrade the  And why do you have 8GB? And how do you measure oomph anyway? Are you using a 64 bit OS? And do you have 64 bit games?

When your machine was new out-of-the-box it already was a major player in the store-bought computers. Apparently Dell though is was good enough to support more drives in a RAID. So the PSU must have been enough for that. RAID would have increased performance overall.

Only a few extreme games benefit by a 1 GB graphics card.

You wanted an answer, so there it is. One does not need a better PSU until there is proof that it is failing.Bigger is not better. And lthe are not bigger anyway. Same size. These are switching PSU;s. A lot of the ____ people write about PSUs have nothing to do with switching PSUs. They don't understand how they work.  If the PSU is getting AIR flow, it will work and work until there is a PERSISTENT overload, at which time it will turn you computer off. That is how there a e made.

When a PSU does shut down, it is often due to some component the in system fairing, not the PSU itself.Going to  a bigger PSU, in such a case, is not the right answer.

As you can tell, I get really ticked off when people say 'you need a new PSU well there is not proof that it is the issue.

If you want more power, unplug the floppy and the DVD drive and any USB powered gadgets while playing a intense game. IMHO.This is an old pent 4 computer and undoubtedly would have performed well with the games that existed then. However games have advanced and require more current components to be able to play them to obtain the optimum performance. So in my opinion you should stick to playing the games that are likely to perform the best with that computer and if you desire to play more demanding games your best bet is to save your money until you have a computer capable of the games you desire. That being said it is somewhat akin to watching a dog chase it's own tail as both technologies are constantly "advancing" and there will always come a point when seeking to do something that is more current than the computer that a diminished ability will occur. As Geek has observed i am curious as to why you have 8gb of ram in a computer that specifies max of 4gb (with qualifications even on that)? If you want a Lamborghini don't start with a Chevrolet and try to make one out of it.truenorth Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 16, 2012, 12:09:56 PM

Geek, I need a new PSU because the current one cannot support higher watt graphics cards. If I put in a 500W power supply, I can pop a higher powered graphics card in there. As far as I know, 305W is not enough for most mid-range graphics cards, the ones I'd be looking at. It's not failing and it runs fine, I just don't think it's pwoerful enough.

I have 8gb because I got a good deal from my cousin who bought 8gb ddr2, not realising he needed ddr3. So I got it for 50 bucks instead of 75+ I would have spent. Plus, I have a 64bit system, so the full 8 gigs is recognized and used.

Unplugging things will not give me more raw gaming power. That's the kind of advice my mother would give me, and she's not exactly a computer person.

I don't see how this is the case. Most modern cards come with 1GB or more anyway, and with things like triple buffering, and multiple monitors becoming a norm it's almost necessary.

I'm really just trying to find what kind of upgrade I should be looking at. I have an idea of what I need, -PSU, and graphics card- but I'm unsure whether I could benefit more from a better processor, motherboard, or some other combination. My comp STRUGGLES with newer games, and I just want it to work well. I don't have 600+ bucks to sink into an entirely new system so I'm working off of what i have now. Thanks for coming back. After breading over your reply, it seems that you want to be a gamer. If so, I have to AGREE with truenorth.

Anymore upgrade to you current PC is only going g to bring marginal improvements. In gaming. incremental improvements are not worth the effort.

Going form 300 watt to 500 watt is meaningless if you are going into very high performance gaming. You go at least 700 watt and think about water cooling. And yes, water cooling does help the PSU. It takes heat out of the box.

As soon as you can, find buyer for you PC. And make some money and get what your really want. And once you get it, enjoy nit and  revel in it. Is horrible to do something g half-way and forever wonder what you missed.

My first computer I had to build myself. Had to borrow a lot of money to do it right. It was great. I learned a lot. Had that  machine for years. I think it was three or four years. Which is a long time to have a PC. After that I went so tore-bought. By then I had the cash  from a good job in Silicon Valley.

Be patient! You can dot it!
That's what a friend suggested, as well as some guys on another forum. I suppose I'll do that, however I could use some help figuring out how much this computer is worth. I've never really sold anything before, apart from a garage SALE or two. Quote from: Matt8D on May 17, 2012, 03:27:02 AM

And the Operating System.
The manufacture of you machine may have a method to kick start your machine. But there is no magic bullet that does it all. Details needed. The following error occurs when attempting to connect to AOL 9.0 using a dial-up connection in Windows XP:

Solve : HDD error?

Answer»

Hello,
My laptop is a dell studio 17. The problem i am having is that when i start the PC it gives me the option to start normally or to start windows repair mode.
If I start it normally the windows logo pops up and sits for 10 - 15 min then restarts. ive used the repair selection to repair the HDD. selected the option to
do start up repair and the program said it found a error and was attempting to fix it. that was 20 hours ago and it still says the same thing. i do not have the
install disk as it didnt come with one and i didnt make one.

is it possible to repair the HDD from a external PC or at least read whats on it and save what i need?Apparently you have another PC to get on the Internet.
You did not day how long you have had your dell studio 17. But even out of warranty, you can go to the Dell site and get information about how to restore your Windows 7 OS.
But an easier option is to contact the local dealer that sold you the Dell. They might do the job for you for a small price if you ask nicely. Maybe you could SUGGEST that you will buy a new hard drive from them if they would restore your system.  Well, you could ask.

You can also Google it and FIND many sites that already have the information in much greater detail that I could give.
Did you see this video?
Video: Restore Windows 7 on Dell Studio.
Or this one:
Fresh install don Dell Studio 15
Also, in the BIOS there should be a way to do a clean install onto the HDD. That only works if HDD is good. It corrects only high-level errors.

To avoid that, you remove the drive from the laptop and TETHER nit to another computer. LOOK in Documents and settings in the laptop drive.

Try to copy, not move,  as much of your stuff from the laptop. Especially My Documents and the photos and videos.  The  My Favorites is not so important, but it is there somewhere in your user area.

If the laptop drive is SATA, you can connect it to your desktop. You should have at least one spare SATA port in any Desktop made in the last few years.
If it is PATA  IDE, disconnect the DVD burner and use that flat cable with a adapter for that  purpose.

Power off when working inside the desktop.
You know that. but other people read this.

Solve : Computer Freezes and Loops Sound?

Answer»

I have recently, say about a week ago, started encountering a problem where my system freezes, becomes non-responsive, and loops audio. The only way to correct the problem is to shut down the computer and restart it. It most often occurs when I am playing computer games and running other programs (like Skype) at the same time, but I have been doing this long before the freezing started occurring without any sort of problems.

Also on ANOTHER possibly related note, the computer in general has become more sluggish as of late.

I ran a google search of the freezing and audio loop and it lead me to believe that my RAM might be faulty. However, when I tested the RAM with the Windows Memory Diagnostic and it came back with no errors.

Computer Information
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
System: Gateway LX6810-01
RAM: 4GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 2.33 GHx (4 CPUs)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
Sound: Realtek High Definition AudioLet's stress-test the rest of your hardware first, then:

1) Download http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html A neat little temperature monitoring application. If there are any temperatures out of the ordinary post back.
2) IntelBurnTest for your CPU: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/IntelBurnTest.shtml Run it on Standard, 1024MB, for 5 passes. If your system gets unstable in the process it will tell you.
Furmark for your GRAPHICS card: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/FurMark.shtml Run the 720p benchmark. If your system gets unstable there will be artifacting on the screen or the picture will freeze. Also, REALLY watch the temperatures closely, if they look like they are going to skyrocket above 90C, stop and reapply thermal paste to your graphics card. Furmark has already posted pictures of blown GTX 275 VRMs as a warning to others.

Computer still alive and trotting along without benchmark failures? Good.
Now go to Start->Run->DXDIAG, go into the Sound tab, set hardware acceleration to "none" then play a few games with sound and see if the problem still persists. To add to what Transfusion has said, test your memory with Memtest86 (see link in my signature). Download the ISO, burn it to a CD, then boot from the CD. Let the test run for several passes (can take hours).

It sounds to me to either be a memory or a heat problem. Open up the side of the case and check for dust build-up on the fans and CPU cooler. Quote from: Transfusion on March 31, 2012, 10:00:33 PM

The 3 tests ran without any problems reported.
My only problem was that on my DXDIAG I have two tabs for Sound and neither of them have any sort of option for hardware acceleration that I can see.

Checked the inside of the case and there was a little dust, but not the amount for me to think that it'd be causing a problem.
I cleaned it up and will run the memory test as SOON as I find some time where I can let the computer sit unused for a couple of hours.Memtest86 came back with no errors. You said the system feels sluggish. Can you describe exactly what is happening please?By sluggish I mean at times things in general are just slower to respond. Programs open slower, mouse moves slower, takes longer to startup/shutdown, takes longer to load the desktop, etc.

The freezing now no longer just occurs while a game is running. Today it froze on the login screen after I locked the desktop. So apparently this thread fell off the front page and got no response.
I didn't revive it until now because it seemed like the problem had gone away, however it is back doing the same exact thing as it was before.

Any other ideas as to what it could be?I do apologize for the lack of a prompt reply to your thread, I assumed that Allan (not to put any particular blame or offense on him or anything) would follow up with a few suggestions after he wanted you to describe what exactly was "sluggish"... and I merely read your last post and forgot about this thread until now...

Also about my post regarding disabling sound acceleration, I did not realize that Microsoft had removed it starting with Windows Vista.

You have run all 3 benchmark tests without issues.

Your computer ships with a paltry GeForce GT 120, and you upgraded it. Did you upgrade the power supply too? There is no way the included 400W power supply would reliably power your computer with the GTX 560 installed.

Try scanning your hard drive for errors, too:

Also, you note that "things in general are slower to respond". It could be a memory configuration error. I have seen faulty memory controllers cause RAM to behave oddly in Dual-Channel mode, but not in Single Channel mode. Take out one stick of RAM (which will make the other stick run in Single-Channel mode) and see if the error persists. If it works fine, then try running both sticks in single-channel mode by placing one in DIMM slot 1 and the other in DIMM slot 4. Quote from: KyittKat on April 19, 2012, 11:30:07 PM

My apologies, I thought you meant to only post back about the temps if they seemed abnormal.
I attached the HWMonitor report file to this post.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin] Quote
Hardware monitor   NVIDIA NVAPI
   Voltage 0   0.99 VOLTS [0x3DB] (VIN0)
   Temperature 0   63°C (145°F) [0x3F] (TMPIN0)
   Fan 0      1410 RPM [0x582] (FANIN0)
   Fan PWM 0   36 pc [0x24] (FANPWMIN0)

If this reading was taking when the video card was idle (no significant load, no games running) then it may be your problem. 63°C (145.4°F) is a bit hot. Based on what information I could find online, that card should idle around 30-35°C (86-95°F) and hit 70-80°C (158-176°F) under full load. If it's idling in the 60s (140s if Fahrenheit), it's probably getting way above that under load. (Based on 21°C or 70°F room temperature with proper case ventilation.) The temperature THRESHOLD for that card is 99°C (210°F), once it nears or passes that, you will likely experience issues like you're having now.

With CPUID's HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html) running, put a significant load on the system then check the video card temperatures (Alt+Tab out of the game and take a peek).

Solve : Hard Drive Speed Testing?

Answer»

I bought myself a OCZ 90GB SSD SATA III

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227757

to replace my Seagate 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s drive which is SATA II ( *in which this SATA III drive will be running SATA II 3.0Gb/s vs 6Gb/s until I either upgrade my motherboard with one that has SATA III port(s) or pick up a SATA III drive controller for $40 )and want to compare before and after speed of data read/write at my current SATA II configuration.

I have been searching the web for a good speed test utility for data read/write through SATA II and the best match I found so far was this site below. BUT the only utility that works ( sort of ) is Parkdale. Reason why I say it sort of works is because when using it and nothing else running to affect the read/write speed of the hard drive each test gave me different results every time I ran it and with different file sizes to read and write I still could not find a setting that would on multiple testing display somewhat similar results. It seems like the results fluctuated too wildly for me to assume that they were good numbers.

I tried to initially go to Windows 7 DEVICE Manager to find this drive controller speed test feature that I never knew existed in 7, and my Windows 7 Home Premium doesn't have such a feature available. MAYBE the more expensive/featured editions of Win 7 have this feature and Home Premium is lacking it.

http://ttcshelbyville.wordpress.com/2009/12/20/test-your-hard-drive-speed-with-windows-7s-device-manager/

Results I got from Parkdale displayed for the Seagate 500GB a speed of 60.8 MB/s Write and 68.2 MB/s Read. The SSD was showing 85MB/s Write and 101MB/s read. But the numbers fluctuated between tests and nothing else running under all file read/write sizes selected. ( *Seagate 500GB has 114GB free space and is not fragmented )

Shouldn't my SATA II speeds be way faster than this? Thats another reason why I feel the numbers are incorrect and I need a better utility for testing than parkdale! I also looked into if there was driver UPDATES for my motherboards drive controller and I have the latest ( or I should say the LAST update available for this board from 2009 )

My HARDWARE is:

Biostar MCP6PB M2+ ver 6.0 Motherboard http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=387&tab=6
Athlon II x4 620 AM3 CPU 95watts http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706
2 x 2GB  - DDR2 800Mhz Corsair (Matched gaming pair of Ram with the aluminum heatsinks) ( 4GB Total Ram *3GB accessible)
Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit ( * Yah I have to upgrade to 64-bit to get 1GB of my Ram back with the 3GB Cap, that's my next project on my list.)

Hopefully this is the correct location to post this as for its inquiring about hardware speed testing using software.

Thanks
The numbers may not be wrong. Doing a speed test and a performance test are not always the same thing. Speed can be a single thing, how fast does it transfer data. Or how fast does it find random sectors.

Performance test is much more subjective.  It is an estimate of how the driven will perform a rel-world scenario. It can be the average of several tests that do PRACTICAL operations.

In a real-world case the drive will be partially fragmented.

2. can anyone tell what motherboard i hav efrom the info? i want to know if i have any extra SATA slots...

if i get a 64gb SSD and PUT my windows xp on it, will i notice any performance improvement?

because with my 2gb ram, everything seems to be snappy as it is...dont know if its worth to get the ssd for OS partition.

thanksI'd open the case and look at your motherboard for its product part number ID such as my motherboard a Biostar has in big bold identification near my CPU  ( MCP6PB M2+ ). Sometimes its not in silkscreen and is a label affixed to the motherboard. With this INFORMATION you can look up your motherboard to know what it will support. Just because you have a socket 775 (socket) DOESNT MEAN you can stuff any socket 775 CPU into it and have it work. For example a friend of mine had a ABIT FATAL1TY Socket 775 gaming motherboard that ONLY SUPPORTED Pentium 4 and Pentium D CPU's. There was no BIOS update available to support the socket 775 Pentium E5400 2.7Ghz Dual-core that he bought. He ended up having to replace his motherboard to get the Pentium E5400 dual core to run.

If you list your motherboard we can go from there.

Hey,
I had an old PC with outdated processor (intel celeron) and the motherboard got burned, so thats why I got a new motherboard with new ram and intel core i5, and installed windows 7 and ESET smart security,and we tried it at the workshop and it worked perfectly, so when I put it together at my house, as soon as I put in the cable, it starts to make sparking noise, and it gave out a smell of something burning, so I took it out immediately, and tried putting the cable in another socket, and then so, it worked, but after 15-30 minutes, it just closed in my face and there was a light smell of something burning, im not an EXPERT at PC's but I think that it is from ONE of these problems, what do you guys think cause getting the PC back costed me alot and I didn't risk opening it again, so here are what i think the problems are;
1. The cable isn't good (im getting a new cable anyways, but just checking)
2. The power supply is not working properly (if that is the case, tell me so i can get a new power supply)

PS. It was working perfectly at the workshop, it is only at my house, it happened to me just now.

Thanks in advance for those who took the time to read and help me
Welcome to the CH forums. Your reference to sparking and burning odors is NOT good. It will become necessary to determine what components caused these issues before proceeding further. Were i in your shoes i would NOT be rushing out to buy anything at this point (until you know what you should buy). Do you mean to say the computer was assembled at the SHOP, tested, then disassembled and reassembled at home?

If that's the case, it sounds like you didn't plug something in right.

Solve : Samsung Monitor Issue?

I bought a new pc + monitor today,

AMD Radeon HD 6950 1 gb

And a Samsung SyncMaster 23" LED 1920x1080 (LS23B370H, using hdmi)
using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I'm using it at 1920x1080 obviously, however the desktop DISPLAY I'm getting is not covering the entire screen, there is at least a 1 inch border of screen around the actual display that is not being used.  I'd take an photo but its too dark to see anything, the monitor menu goes all the way down but the windows taskbar is ending almost an inch above. I've tried FIDDLING with the monitor settings, the h and v position settings under 'size and position' tab of the menu are greyed out and hence cannot be changed. Any ideas how to fix this?
First i would recommend reading the manual that came with your monitor for advice on resolution settings. My inclination is to tell you to try different resolution settings and to help you know what you are doing and what the effect  is likely to do here is a link that explains the rational behind various settings depending on the screen size and desired outcome.

That post was wrong, my graphic card specs says:
Max Supported Resolution (ANALOG):2048 x 1536
Max Supported Resolution (DIGITAL):2560 x 1600

so it should support a 1920x1080 monitor with hdmi cable shouldn't it?According to the specs provided yes it should. However have you tried EXPERIMENTING with other settings?truenorthYes i tried various settings, when i play COD4, the image is proper vertically but not horizontally, even with a resolution of 1680x1050 the image is proper vertically but not horizontally. It really is baffling me, is the issue with the monitor or the gfx card? or is it just a settings issue?Does this appearance effect occur with ALL displayed video or is it just certain ONES? It may relate to the embedded software criteria for the software. Normally the alteration of video displayed is governed by the resolution setting chosen related to the available hardware. If the answer is not self evident from the monitor manual then either a phone call to their tech support  or an e-mail might shine some light on the issue.truenorth1920/1080=1.777
2048/1536=1.333
2560/1600=1.6
1680/1050=1.6
These are different aspect ratios (Width/Height).  Your monitor will only display properly the ratio 1.777.  You have to choose a resolution that equals 1.777.  You can force the image to FILL the entire screen by changing the monitor settings, but it will appear stretched in horizontal or vertical or will will have black bars.

Solve : No Image on LCD Screen?

Answer»

My computer has no video image on the LCD. I tested the LCD on another computer and the LCD is fine. I put another known working LCD on the computer in question and still no image on the LCD. The computer has inter-grated graphics and has a blue VGA connector.  It is a Compaq Presario SR2050NX. The motherboard has these series of numbers on it: RC410-M Rev 1.1 and this serial number Q1115033F69S112F. I looked it up on-line (or at least I think I found it on-line) and some websites says it’s a Asterope???!!!. Don't know if mine is the Asterope(?!?) The online description does SAY that the motherboard supports a PCI-E X16 graphics card via one PCI - Express slot, which the motherboard does in fact have.

I picked up a video card which is a PNY Ge-Force GT 430 video card. I told the salesman what I needed (a x16 graphics card) and he said this is what I needed. I put the video card in the PCI-E slot turned on the PC and still no image on the screen. I picked up some new RAM an installed it and still no image. I TOOK out the video card and installed the LCD to on inter-grated VGA connector and left in the new RAM and still no image! At this point I am thinking the motherboard is bad. But if the motherboard was bad wouldn't I see some expanded capacitors?!?

Thanks for all the help!!!!
This is the same computer as in your other thread?

If you see bulging capacitors on a motherboard, that's often sign that it's faulty or potentially unreliable but that does not mean that all faulty or dead motherboards will have them, there are plenty of other things that could fail that leave no visible signs. Also have you considered the PSU (power supply unit)?

In fact I think the fact that there is no display on the monitor is misleading you into thinking that you have a video problem. What you have in fact is a dead computer. This could be a failed motherboard or possibly the power supply. What you need to do is a complete TROUBLESHOOT. Use your eyes and ears. When you connect it to the AC and push the power button, do you hear anything like FANS, hard drive, etc, or is it silent? Is the power cord properly inserted at both ends? Are there any lights lit on the motherboard? If there is a switch on the PSU is it in the correct position? If there is a 120v/240v switch, likewise? (Don't flip this with the AC connected!) Next visually confirm all internal cables are connected nicely. Try wiring a different power button to the header on the board. If you have a spare known good PSU of adequate power rating swap it in. Try running the PC with the disk drives disconnected and only 1 stick of RAM. If all of these fail then possibly the motherboard has failed. When I plug in the PC to the wall outlet I do see a green lite on the back of  the PSU the portion that is visible on the outside of the PC case. All internal connectors are correct and the CPU fan and case fan stay on for a long period of time. I tried switching the RAM like you recommended but still no image on the screen?!?
However when I turn the PC on I dont hear any kind of beeping sounds. But I touch the harddrive and it does appear to be on.  I put my hand on it and can feel  the insides moving. At this point I really think its the motherboard the went bad...........................any ideas where i can get one of this type for cheap. I found some online that I think they are the same, but they cost anywhere from $65.00 to $80.00 Ouch !!??!! Quote

However when I turn the PC on I dont hear any kind of beeping sounds
One last thing to inspect though is the processor. Maybe try to clean and reapply some thermal paste and make sure its well seated with heat sink. The heat sink and CPU look just fine.............................I think it's the Motherboard ??!!??Here are the specs of your motherboard:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00783614&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3245052#N50
No beeps at all? Just blank screen?
As a last ditch effort you may want to try resetting CMOS: My guess is also that the motherboard is damaged.
I tried the CMOS thing but still nothing........I am gonna shop around for a used Mobo.......any ideas where to get a good price....??

Thanks everyone for you input.......I WIL keep u posted !!!!You don't have to get the exact same motherboard for a replacement, you can pop another motherboard with the same chipset as yours (which is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 for Intel Processors, BTW), and it'll work without problems.

Solve : External HDD don't show any document files?

Answer»

HI,
I made the HDD from my dead PC external. When I crank it up and view what is there I don't find any documents, word, or excel listed.  Folders that were on the desktop are not there either. Did I do something wrong or are these not available? This problem has been talked about before.
I have the same problem. The solution was that I could not USE some drives in the USB adapter if that came from a desktop. And the other way also. When a drive was formatted with the USB deice.I had ton use it that way. And sometimes ONE way and not  the other. GIVES me heartburn.

This does not always happen. So it is hard to find the exact reason why.

Amway, put the drive in the desktop and it will work. Consider getting decent USB to Hard Drive adapters; Not those CHEAP ones from eBay.

Solve : about computer hard drive?

Answer»

How can i transfer the memory of one drive to another. For future reference, you mean the contents of one drive to another, not the "memory" - memory refers to ram.

Depending on exactly what you are trying to COPY and what you intend to do with the new HARD drive, the best method is often disc IMAGING or cloning. MACRIUM Reflect is a good, free product:

ok, it seems you need to be asked the obvious.

What make and model laptop?

What are the specs?

Is it a bought game or a download?

What are the game requirements?

Have you tried speedfan?

Have you tried anything?

Laptops are not really designed to play games (i never understand why people do, tbh) they are designed towards WORKING on the move.
Do you own a desktop?what does speedfan has to do with GAMING my laptop is acer ferrari 3200 its a downloaded game not the full version and i now my computer can with it because i played it before when i had xp
maybe a dodgy download.......

Speedfan can SHOW you internal temperatures and allow you to control the speed of the fans. Being as you've stated an high temp and all.i always now what the internal temperatures whit looking at my tool bar but with speed fan i cant control the fan on my laptop can you reply pleaseYeah I do find Speedfan ineffective at controlling most laptop fans....

65C while under load is great for a desktop CPU and just plain awesome for a laptop CPU. You haven't told us about your graphics card's temps though...

Also, how does it freeze? Does the sound keep playing after the video freezes? After the freeze does the computer return to normal? Or do you have to force restart?

Solve : Advice would be greatly appreciated!! Laptop help.?

Answer»

I am looking into purchasing a laptop for my upcoming first semester of college. I need the laptop to be fast, but to also have decent gaming capabilities. I'm wanting to run Diablo 3/Wow on medium to high settings. This is what I am leaning toward, http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=457&Code=08626JU&category-id=F41BC8E1656C5F85171FBDB172571912.

The reason I am leaning toward this laptop is that it has a dedicated graphics card, and a fairly new processor. I am definitely on a tight budget, so this is also a BIG plus due to the LOW price tag. What do you all THINK? My biggest concern is overheating because I will be playing for hours on certain days. Thanks Everyone, hope to see some replies. QUOTE from: Volfreek94 on May 01, 2012, 05:32:13 PM

Solve : maintaining audio?

Answer»

I want to watch a movie on the LCD tv. so i use an HDMI cable to connect my laptop. but the sound of the tv is not good. moreover, it has no sockets for audio output. is there any way that I can keep audio output within the Laptop? any programs? thank you! Please give more details.
On my laptop the sound comes out of the laptop even when I have the TV hooked up. How does yours work? What model?
this is HP Pavillion DV6. windows 7 64 bit.
i connect to the tv thru an HDMI cable as an EXTENDED desktop. so i RUN the movie using VLC on the tv screen. the sound automatically comes out of the tv and not from the laptop. based on what i know, thats one of the purposes of HDMI cables. but is there any way around it? can i maintain the sound back on my laptop?and i dont know if this matters...
i think i dont have a separate sound card. i have not modified hardwares in any form. this comes with beats audio. the device manager says IDT high definition audio codec and Inter(R) display audio under the sound video game controllers. Right. HDMI does the sound over the cable so it makes sense to turn off the laptop sound. Did you CHECK the HP site to see if there is an option to keep laptop sound?
Some people have no sound at all! Look at this:
Quote

HP  HDMI sound
1)      Click Start -> Control Panel
2)      Click Hardware and Sound -> Manage Audio Device
3)      Check for HDMI Audio (Your HDMI connection needs to be plugged in)
4A)      If it is disabled, right click and select enable
4B)   If it is not disabled, double click and choose the advanced tab and uncheck allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
5)      Click OK twice, and reboot your PC.

Solve : External Graphics Card help?

Answer»

Hi all! I sure hope someone can help me out here. I recently read about external GRAPHICS cards for laptops. I came across the ViDock that holds a regular sized graphics card. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 with an express card slot. I believe the Vidock will work but the website does not show which computers it will work with. Does any one have any experience with this? And if it does work..how powerful of a graphics card will I be able to run with it? Do I need to upgrade my memory as well? Oh and one more question..is there any thing out there like ViDock but cheaper?  I am LOOKING at $249 just for the dock with out the graphics card.
There are the specs for my laptop
Intel Core2 CPU [email protected] 1.73 GHz, 2.0 GB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400

I have read that I could replace my graphics card..my model does not have it attached to the motherboard..but I am to scared to take it apart! lol
And PLEASE don't say BUY a new one..this laptop works awesome besides the BAD graphics card!

I appreciate the help!

Solve : MSI AM2 Motherboard with AMD1600LE 64BIT CPU "POST" problem?

Answer»

I have been TRYING to Clear the CMOS as at POST,I get a single Beep then another single Beep and the POST starts again cyclically,so I am unable to run any operating system or  start up a cdrom boot disc..NB I have removed the CMOS Battery and only have the minimum of components installed and LEFT the PC in this state overnight but cant RESOLVE the problem.Anyone have any ideas??? MichaelYou have not stated the motherboard model number. If you find that out you can Google the motherboard specification and find out the BIOS manufacturer, (for example AMI). Then you can find a list of beep codes for that BIOS maker.  Most MSI boards use an AMI BIOS, and for these, two beeps means there is a RAM ERROR, to be precise a parity error in the first 64K. This could be due to a badly seated or faulty RAM module. First try reseating the RAM, then if that does not clear the fault, if you have more than one you could try each one in the first slot to see if one is faulty. Otherwise it could be the motherboard component failure.

Solve : and it has locked up and emachine em350 netbook?

Answer»

hello I am new to this sort of thing so forgive me if I make any mistakes... I have the above netbook that belongs to my son. he wants me to sort it out for him,  the problem is this:  it has no cd drive, and it COMES with windows 7 basic etc installed on the harddrive.  somehow a password was lost and no one could open it in windows. So I took the hdd  out and installedit in my own pc as a slave drive and formatted it... this was the only way I could open it.     ACER no longer support it and I cant get the drivers etc that it needs . it has wifi and everything on it but I cant get it to see them.is there any way I can get the files and drivers I NEED to restore it to its former glory...

any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated...

thank you.Well, removing the HARD drive and FORMATTING it was, in my opinion, the WRONG thing to do.  Most likely, the hard drive had a recovery partition on it and the system could have been restored to it's original configuration from that recovery partition.  This is the common way in which manufacturers provide owners a way to restore the system to factory settings if needed.

I suggest you go to http://us-store.acer.com/rcd/ and order the "Recovery Media" for that computer.  Since you're dealing with a netbook which, I presume, has no CD/DVD drive, you will need to get an external USB DVD drive so that you can put the Recovery Media in it and boot from it.

Solve : Single Board CPU?

Answer»

Single BOARD CPU are complete systems build on one daughterboard SIZE PCB.
They contain one or two sockets for CPU, memory, video, LAN, usb and serial/ parallel connectors
they come in various make, some are ISA slot, ,more modern are PCI(-?) or whatever the FUTURE holds.

Backplanes are used to assamble the system with also offers the P8P9 or ATX PSU connector.

I bought one long time AGO - i liked the design and concept - didn't pay much -
but they are offered ten times that i payed for - unfortunately..

It doesn't boot anymore - i wanted to taste an audiocard and thereafter it didn't boot.
I contacted the company support and tried their suggestions - to no avail.

The board holds some removable parts, CPU, DALLAS module and Award Bios

Waiting your keen suggestions.. Can you tell us the brand and model?

Can you give us a photo of it maybe?

Explain exactly what you mean by "it doesn't boot any more"

Solve : Changing DDR2 Memory?

I have a two-year old Systemax Venture VXC2 PC, Intel Core 2 E7500 2.93 GHz, Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit.
MOTHER board holds two DDR2 cards, with a capability of 4GB.
Presently fitted with one 2GB card and one 1GB card, totaling 3GB.
It is my intention to upgrade to 4GB.
QUESTION: Should I buy one 2GB card and simply swap with the 1GB ----- OR ----- buy a set of two new 2GB cards?

I'm inclined toward the latter.

Art
There is no reason to buy 2.If you can find exactly the same brand with all other criteria exactly as the one remaining 2 gb is. You probably do not even need to buy the same brand as long as all other factors are the same but buying the same brand should eliminate ALL potential issues.truenorth
I haven't looked up the specs on the computer to confirm that it will recognize all the 4gb.Sometimes even with 4 gb only slightly above 3 will be recognized. Don't know if that  is a factor in this case. QUOTE from: truenorth on May 05, 2012, 05:10:14 PM

Solve : Configure RAM ??

Answer»

My computer has a GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H vers 2 motherboard, with a 3.40 GHz AMD Phenom II X4 965

BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F4 07/28/2010

I’ve recently had to reformat my hard DRIVE, and reinstall Windows XP Professional SP3.

I have also replaced all the memory modules with 4 modules of 4GB each, totaling 16GB.

However, when I check Control Panel/ System Properties/General, it states 3.25GB of RAM.

When I run BELARC Advisor program, the following is reported for memory:

3326 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'A0' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A1' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A2' has 4096 MB
Slot 'A3' has 4096 MB

I continually get warnings of ‘high memory usage’ detected by Internet Explorer.

How do I get the computer to recognize and utilize all of the installed memory?
Install a 64 bit OPERATING sytem. Windows 7 64 bit Only support More Ram
But you have an option. if you use win 7 32 bit you need to patch to use total of you Ram
I'm not sure in win xp working. The Windows 7 patch to use more RAM is not recommended. As suggest by JJ3000, if your system supports 64 bit then you should install a 64 bit operating system to use more than 4 GB ram.

Solve : CPU running slow. What could be the reasons??

Answer»

I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz PROCESSOR. Recently I upgraded to Windows 7. The CPU slows down when playing HD videos, games and multi-tasking and the computer lags. I cleaned the whole system, replaced the HEAT sink, upgraded RAM. When its idle its at full power but slows down as I open more apps or games (Checked with Intel Processor ID Utility). Other tools too report CPU overheating. The hard drive is fine. I think it may be the CPU fan's fault (Works fine but old). Do you think I should replace it? Many Thanks in advance...How much RAM do you have ? ?What make and model is the computer?  If you right click on Computer and select Properties, what is your Windows Experience Index?  What component of it has the lowest score?  Do you have a video card in an expansion slot or do you have onbooard (on the motherboard) video?

Quote

Other tools too report CPU overheating.
What "tools"?

Quote
The CPU slows down when playing HD videos, games and multi-tasking ...
What games?

Keep in mind you have an old system to be running Windows 7 on.  I have a similar situation.  I am running Windows 7 on a 2.66 GHz Pentium 4, with 4GB of RAM (3.50 GB usable).  I have an AGP video card in it; it's a NVidia GeForce 6200 with 256MB of memory.  The Windows Experience Index on it is 2.9.  I have Windows Aero enabled and that works fairly well.  I do not play graphics-intensive games with this computer.

As far as multi-tasking goes, I typically have a web browser, email client, and one or more other apps, such as Word, EXCEL, or PDF reader, open, and this generally works fairly well. My PC is a custom-made one with an Intel 945G MoBo, Seagate 320GB HD, 2x1GB RAM. My Windows Experience Index shows 2.7 for the CPU and its the lowest. I don't have a video card. Tools like CPU Clock Utility show 'CPU core overheat' all the time. I never overclocked the CPU. Games such as GTA SA, NFS MW, NFS Carbon, FIFA '10, Mafia 2 ran well in XP but not now due to the slow CPU. As to me multi-tasking goes like playing videos & music, web surfing & making Office presentations. You have a 2.7 WEI (Windows Experience Index) for Processor?  Is that right?  That seems lower than I would expect.  My processor, at 2.66GHz, is not much faster than yours but my WEI for Processor is 3.7.

Can you add more RAM?  Do you have an AGP slot (for an AGP video card)?   You have no PCI Express slots, right?  If you run dxdiag, what does it show for amount of memory for Display?

What size monitor are you using, and what's it's resolution?

Edit: You might try disabling Aero.  For info on how, SEE http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/disable-aero-in-windows-7/e3c1e76b-e820-4040-9eec-39caad9092b8Thanks for the reply. The WEI was not just the same every time. When the processor was fine it showed upto 3.4 but now the lowest is 2.7. I don't have AGP but 2 PCI-e slots and 2 PCI slots. The dxdiag shows it has 128MB of Video Memory. The monitor's resolution is 1366x768. Adding more RAM didn't SOLVE the problem. Disabling Aero only sped it up a little bit.I just ran the WEI again and now it shows the CPU and the 3D Business and Gaming Graphics having the lowest and equal score of 3.3 with no progams running in the background. Quote from: Tej on May 17, 2012, 08:32:22 PM
Thanks for the reply. The WEI was not just the same every time. When the processor was fine it showed upto 3.4 but now the lowest is 2.7.
That's abnormal.  The WEI should remain constant unless you've made a hardware change (RAM, video card, etc.) or updated a driver.   So, that fluctuation you've reported may be a clue to some problem with your processor or motherboard.

I suggest you observe your WEI on a frequent basis for awhile to see how it varies.  Normally, I believe you need to re-run the assessment, or re-generate the WEI, to make it re-calculate the scores.  It toes not re-calculate by merely opening the Properties panel for Computer. I scanned the WEI again. It remained the same. There is a thing I noticed. One of the wedges of the latching mechanism which holds down the CPU fan to the Mobo is broken, which causes the fan & heat-sink not to attach to the CPU completely. I think the CPU is not completely in contact with the heat-sink, which may cause it to slow down. Do you think this is the cause? Thanks in advancemight be the temperature Quote from: Tej on May 18, 2012, 09:02:42 AM

Solve : Screens sticking, losing sound?

Answer»

When gaming, browsing or watching videos my screens (duel monitors) will stick for approximately 2-3 seconds.  When this happens I sometimes also lose sound, which will either not return at all or will come back a few moments later.  If I unplug my headset I can sometimes get sound to come back.  Nothing is shutting off on it's own.  My fans sound normal.

Recently upgrades:
Video card (installed 4 months prior to problem, no issues until now)
Motherboard (reformat after install, problem still there)

Solve : How to tell when a thumb drive was removed...?

Answer»

I have a troubling situation at work. I work in an office where there are only 4 people who work the weekend. And we work 2 people per shift. The bottom line is that I think my COWORKER stole my thumb DRIVE. Is there a way to tell WHEN a thumb drive has been removed from a Windows 7 computer? If I can pin point the time, I will have a much better way go about questioning him. Thanks in advance.

P.S., if you're interested in the story WELL, I know for a fact that I left the thumb drive at work because I remembered leaving it after I left the office and was on the road. When I saw him the next day (and my suspicion lay with 1 guy) and asked him if he saw it, his responses were a joke. He was nervous and uncharacteristically squirrelly. I know this guy took it. I just need a little more proof. Anyone's help here WOULD be much appreciated.  I cannot help you with what you seek. However depending how important and secure you want the DATA on these devices to be (in the future) you might want to consider something like this:
http://www.truecrypt.org/
Then at least all you lose is a piece of hardware (unless of course your activities and those of your associates are linked to the NSA). truenorthThis utility: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

It should list the date and time when unplugged under one of the columns. You have to know which device it is though. I have not used it on 7, but it should work.

Solve : Single BIOS beep, and then slave hard drive disappears.?

Answer»

So, sometimes when I am playing a graphics-intensive game, my computer will throw up a single BIOS beep, and then seconds later, I'll hear the "hardware removed" sound that windows makes, at which point my slave hard drive disappears from windows explorer. (it holds all the program files, etc., while the master SSD holds the OS). Anything that was using the hard drive (like all of my games) will stop within seconds.

If I reset the computer, it's working again.

I've tried swapping SATA ports, updating the firmware, and I'm running out of ideas. The issue doesn't HAPPEN %100 percent of the time, so I can't always recreate it to see if the problem is FIXED. Also, I'm running windows 7 64-bit.

Any ideas? Quote

I got the impression that it was an IDE drive. Anyway, I think you better start backing up your files, it sounds like this hard drive is failing. Does this hdd have SMART? You could download a utility the uses SMART to analyze the drive.Well, I don't know much about what smart actually does, but yes, I do have that activated in the BIOS.

Are you sure the hard drive is failing? It never has an issue with anything else, such as moving large files. Only when I'm playing graphics-intensive games. No, I am not sure, but I think it is very LIKELY. TRY one of those utilities.

It's weird that it only does it during games. It seems unlikely, but maybe a voltage drop due to an inadequate power supply. Do you know the wattage of your PSU?It's an 850W power supply.

As far as the utilities, I was running HD Tune while I was playing Batman Arkham Asylum, and it threw up an error when I got the beep. It said "Read error! Test aborted"... or SOMETHING along those lines, anyway.

Solve : Installed new video card, causing program issues?

Answer»

Hello!

Recently I installed a new video card and ever since then several of my programs cease to open and installing new ones (games ect.) don't seem to work either. I first noticed it when I tried to open Photoshop. The splash page opened and it started initializing. Just before it was about to open, an error message popped up. "Adobe CS5 has stopped working" it continues to go on with the typical Window's spiel, "Do you want to send the INFORMATION blah blah blah" but never TELLS me what the issue is. At first I thought that it was just Photoshop. Then I tried Illustrator. Same thing. Flash. Same thing and so on. I attempted to install a game. Never let me GET past the first setup screen. VLC player ceases to work too. The same error messege pops up "Such and such has stopped working".

Mind you the computer is running GREAT. I've had no other problems with it. The internet works fine, other games that are currently installed still work, better even. I am pretty certain that my problems lie with my installation of the card somehow. Putting it in was pretty simple, I had the extra power ports it needed, everything fit where it needed to go. I uninstalled all of my old video card drivers before putting it in and I've since uninstalled and reinstalled the new video card's drivers from NVIDIA (and EVGA when the first did nothing). I've updated my OS, uninstalled and reinstalled programs that weren't working, nothing seems to help. I've scoured the internet for somebody who's had the same problem but I've come up with nothing. If anybody has some other suggestions I'd be very appreciative. Here's my specs below.

Here's a link to HP's full spec listing if that's better. Everything is the same except for the new video card.

Solve : My computer keep switching off during game play.?

Answer»

hello. im having computer problem and im hoping that i could get some HELP here after my friend found that my computer keeps switching itself off after 30-45 minutes of playing battlefield: bad company 2.

im using asus ai suite to help keep track of my temps.
Cpu temp before the new heatsink and fan was at 58C and after sits at about 46C during GP. the system is at about 70C and after around 57-60C

specs:
Windows vista home PREMIUM x64bit.
motherboard: asus p5kse.
ram: i think they are kingston 633mhz 4x 2gig total 8gig.
processor: intel Q6600 2.4ghz quadcore never overclocked.
GC: Zotac GTX 560ti Amp 1gig.
powersupply: deltaco model number: PSU-423 500watt

i have newly cleaned my computer, reapplyed new heatsink and installed a new 120mm noctua chassi fan to the side as intake, i have a ZALMAN FN CNPS9700LED CPU and MB Cooler i think its 100mm or 97mm and a small 80mm fan blowing air out of my chassi.

I've never had any problems with the old GC i had which was a nvidia hd3870 512mbit.
ive been think that it could be that my powersupply cant handle the new card because its minimum power req. is 500. . culd this be a problem. or if i should buy a new chassi and attach more fans, im thinking about water cooling but am unsure.

hope this information help. if you have any other questions you need in order to HOPEFULLY help me, just send me a message and ill try to help the BEST i can.

the computer is home built with the help of a friend. im fairly new to building computers and OS. but ill try my best to help.

cheers

and sorry i dont know what temp the grafics card is at. sorry, but it think hot. xD Given this "the new card because its minimum power req. is 500." if you have the ability without spending additional money at this point,i would try a higher rated PSU and see the result. The fact that you can play the game for a fairly extensive period but it eventually causes your issue tends to relate to rising heat issue. Unless it is the new card itself that has a problem that only arises after a period of use.truenorthi have considered that option for a while now. just needed to ask before i went out and bought a new PSU.

ill give it a try and see what happens.i have bought a 700watt PSU and it seems to have fixed the problem. the only problem i have now is that my Hard driver are hot as all *censored* but i think seperating them buy about 5cm and installing a 120mm fan should solve this problem. cheers again Well done. As you continue to deal with heat issues some other options re the HDDs is to consider an external or a SSD.truenorthtrue. cheers for the assist. peace out!

Solve : RAM cards query?

Answer»

Hello

There are two PCs here, one with 1.5Gb RAM (Win XP Pro PC tower) and another (Win 7 PC tower) with 3Gb RAM. I am thinking of upgrading the 3Gb RAM to 4Gb RAM so that I can install Mac OS X virtually.

Ideally, what I would like to do is remove a 1GB RAM card from the Win 7 PC and install it in the XP Pro PC tower, and then buying a 2GB RAM card and installing it in the Win 7 tower. But I am not sure if the RAM cards are compatible. How would I find that out, please, and how would I find out which type of new 2Gb RAM card I would need to buy to upgrade the Win 7 PC?

Thanks

High1www.crucial.comWhat a great site! Many thanks.

Is this message/warning that appears on the site having scanned the PC very important: 'Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules'.

The reason I ask is that this PC is only a few months old and it seems a bit pointless to get rid of 3Gb of RAM (2 x RAM cards) that I have at the moment, just to install 2x2Gb matched pairs.

CheersMatched means all the small detail specifications are exactly the same.  This is necessary in order for the memory to function in dual-channel mode which is the highest performance.  Right now, it's not functioning as dual-channel because 1 module is 2GB & the other is 1GB.  Are you using Win7-64bit or 32bit?  If 32bit, Windows may not even RECOGNIZE the change from 3GB to 4GB.  I suspect since the machine is only a few months old, it's 32bit because most 64bit machines will come with a minimum of 4GB RAM.  If this is the case, there is no benefit to go from 3GB to 4GB.
Download, install & RUN this utility for more complete information:  www.hwinfo.com
Choose 32 or 64bit versions depending on what you have.Hello Commando

Thanks for getting back to me.

That looks like a useful piece of software.

It's a 64-bit machine (PackardBell), so I would need to ensure that (Module Part Number:) GU512303EP0201/2 were compatible with the cabled XP Pro PC downstairs.

The only reason I am hoping to upgrade this new PC is that 4Gb RAM is the recommended minimum for a Mac OS X virtual operating system.

Thanks again for your help.
Yeecchh... Why would you want to run Mac OS X instead of Windows?Just to put a knowledge of Mac on my CV (RESUME) and to learn a bit more. Don't worry, I am loyal Win FAN!It's illegal (as in against the Apple EULA) to install any version of OSX in a VM or on non-Mac hardware. The only thing you are allowed to do is install OSX Server in a VM, provided that the VM is hosted in OSX on Apple hardware. And provided, of course, you have the appropriate license or licenses.

DC 12V 18A is more likely. There is no way to tell your PSU wattage by reading the label on the fan.

What the make and model of your computer?  Doing an Internet search on that info should yield sources telling the wattage of your PSU.  My guess is it's most likely somewhere close to 250 Watts.

Solve : 32bit for 64bit.?

Answer»

Hello i have windows 32bit and i have 3gb ram ddr2. i have been told that i can only have 4gb max.i have read if i PUT the 64bit disc in it will automatically uninstall
the 32bit and install the 64.is this correct is it that simple.also i read that i must reformat my hard drive how do i do that.and lastly should i BACKUP all my ,
programmes.
thanks .1) What OS?
2) Is your hardware 64 bit compatible?
3) You will have to back up all critical data. All programs will need to be REINSTALLED from scratch.
4) Nothing will happen "automatically". You will need to BOOT to the OS disc, format, and install from scratch. You will then have to download and install the correct drivers. Thanks allan i think i;ll leave it . it sounds LIKE i need a IT guy. its' way over my head.

Just tried putting this together last night. I had everything hooked up so I turned it on to see if everything was working. At first the power wouldn't work at all. Then I fiddled with some cords and I got it to turn on. When I turned it on I noticed one of the Pre-built in fans on the case emitted some smoke. The processor fan and the case fan that was plugged in did not work. The power supply fan and the video card fan worked.

Really in need of some help here I am new to building computers. Is it the case or are some of the parts not compatible?

Thank you.I am sure that you can appreciate that given assistance when to date this has NEVER been a functioning computer is extremely difficult (because problems can be almost anywhere). On the specifics of this issue "one of the Pre-built in fans on the case emitted some smoke" this could be related to a WRONG connection to the fan such as incorrect power voltage. Does that fan still work? The fact that the CPU fan is not working more than likely prevents pretty well everything related to the computer "booting" as security (heat) sensors won't allow it to function without that fan running. The best thing to do at this stage is to go back over EVERYTHING you have done slowly and ensure all components are installed and connected properly.I am tempted to point to certain things for particular attention but really it serves you best to examine  closely ALL you have done. You list your components that go to make up your computer. How (where) did you arrive at the combination and build you have? truenorth I would make sure you don't have a stray standoffs put in that may be shorting out part of the motherboard.  Make sure you count all the screw holes and the standoffs you have in PLACE.  If the CPU fan and the Case fan are both directly plugged into the motherboard, and they are not working, I would think it is a motherboard issue.  The CPU and case fans should spin as long as the device is turned on and connected properly, so if you can't get those working without anything ELSE installed, then you have a motherboard issue.

Solve : HP OFFICEJET 4500 Printer wrong font print?

Answer»

First of all sorry for my English. I recently purchased HP OFFICEJET 4500 All-in-one Printer. Printer working well but I print document (Lucida Bright Font). Original font not printing. printing some wrong font. Please Help me.You may be using a Non-English version of the printer. Find and select the PROPERTIES of the printer and do a test page. It should be the same ANS the standard font on your system.

Also, most printers have a way of making a test page without the computer. Just turn off the printer, turn it on with you finger on the page feed button. In a few seconds it will start a print test of the common fonts.

Here is a video.
Self Test HP Officejet J6400
Sorry, wrong printer .. still LOOKING...
Thank you for concern about my problem

i print test page. test page is ok. and any document print correctly. but using "Luicda Bright font" print it wrong font. This may be the information you need. Fonts must be installed on computer. Then manage the font for the printer using HP FontSmart
This is from the manual.
Quote

Using HP FontSmart
HP FontSmart is a font management utility (for Windows only), that is
included with the printing software that came with your printer. When
you install the printing software, you can install HP FontSmart through
the Custom installation option.
Fonts must first be installed in your computer’s operating system
before you can use them in an application. The HP FontSmart utility
manages fonts and makes them available to Windows applications.
Using HP FontSmart can improve Windows performance by allowing
you to install and make available only the fonts you need.
HP FontSmart searches your disk(s) for all fonts, allowing you to view
font samples and to remove any duplicate or unneeded fonts.
When you RUN HP FontSmart, two lists are displayed. The list on the
left displays fonts available to install, and the list on the right displays
the fonts that are currently installed in Windows. You can install,
uninstall, or delete any font that appears on the lists.
For more information, see the online Help for HP FontSmart.
Note To save disk space and system resources, install only those fonts that
you plan to use.
I  hop this helps. Please use the forum and not PM to me.
The font you want may not have been installed, or may not work on the HP 4500. Try another font that looks like the one you want.

The most popular fonts are:
Arial
Courier New
Georgia
Helvetica
Tahoma
Times New Roman
Verdana

Try a simple program. Try Wordpad.  It is under accessories.
Or just use the Run box and type in Wordpad.
With Wordpad try the fonts above.
Here is the manual for the 4500 all-in-one

I can not find specific information about fonts for this printer. There are regional differences for this model. Did you buy this printer in India?
Please see there exist different versions of your printer.

These printers require different drivers. Be sure you are using the right driver.
Also, there are diagnostic tools for printers in this group, including a printer Wizard for windows. Have you already used any?

Please notice there are differ drivers for 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7. But suren to pick the right one for hour version of Windows 7.Thank you very very much...

ill try to do this things.
