Solve : How do you share a printer between XP & 7??

Answer»

My desktop running Widows 7 is hooked to an EPSON NX300 USB printer. My wife's desktop is on Windows XP. Both are hooked to the internet through a wireless LAN.

I tried through the control PANEL to implement printer sharing but can't get it to work. Are these 2 O.S. compatible for printer sharing? Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.File and PRINT sharing needs to be enabled under the Administrator settings...Thanks much for your reply! I thought that since both computers were set up with single users that it was AUTOMATICALLY in administrator mode. APPARENTLY I'm wrong and not sure how to get there...............

Solve : Trying to find standard operating temps, video card?

Answer»

My video card is a AMD Radeon HD 7750.

I am trying to find the documentation for the standard operating temps for my video card. Is there a site for this? I tried looking at the AMD site where I get the DRIVERS but I can not find anything that says what the standard temps should be. Idle it is about 40c, while playing games it goes up to about 60c, but I have SEEN it as high as 70c. I think this is fine but I am trying to TROUBLESHOOT a problem and want to be sure.

Mainly I am just wondering if there is somewhere to find standard operating temps for any hardware (some sort of compilation site) but if not, where would I find the information? I tried to google it, but all I could find was people running overclock tests. I suppose I used incorrect terms. Which terms should I use to SEARCH?

Thank you!Hello!

I think those temps seem just fine for a video card. Video cards have been known to handle much higher temps than processors can. My nVidia GTX 560 S.C. will get to about 68c sometimes while gaming. What you need to search for is the "thermal specification" for your card. I know that Intel and AMD PUBLISHES thermal specifications for their processors, but it may be difficult to find this information for your video card.

Good luck

Oh okay. I was searching *running temperature*. Good to know the correct term, thank you.

Why are you using wireless on a desktop computer? Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 30, 2012, 07:04:11 PM

Does internet explorer work?

Why are you using wireless on a desktop computer?

Maybe he is saving himself from having to wire it all up.It´s a desktop, I use Google Chrome Quote from: Rmoises8 on May 31, 2012, 05:59:13 PM
It´s a desktop, I use Google Chrome

Cool.So it is a desktop and he can not connect. It says connected, but it does not work. This happens with wireless connections. Sometimes.

Is he using XP? Windows 7?
Does the wireless use WEP, WEP2 or nothing?
Has it ever worked?  When?  Or why not?
How far is the wireless router?

What tool is used to setup the wireless connection?

Solve : Problem with a graphic card.?

Answer»

Hello everyone , i just got an AMD Radeon 6850 for my computer to replace my Nvidia gt530 (which is terrible for gaming) , but sadly , i'm not done with "upgrading" my computer , i was thinking it was gonna be fine , but nope...

Here comes another issue.

I'm actually running a power supply of 450w BUT , i have to buy another one that does at least 700w. Since 450w cant handle the graphic card (theres even one port missing!)

Now my problem is , i'm pretty much terrible at computers , so i have no ideas what i should get.

Theres some in amazon , but i have no ideas if its the right ones for my computer really.

I will link a dxdiag just after the links to the power supplies , and please , if you can tell me which one would fit , it would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Link of my graphic card : (Sorry for the french , but i had to buy it on the french one since theres none in the USA / UK one)

http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0048027IQ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

The power supplies i found : (Once again, sorry for the french in it)

http://www.amazon.fr/Advance-EP-700WTP-Power-Series-Alimentation/dp/B0051311FO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338509921&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.fr/Inter-Tech-SL-700-Alimentation-pour-ATX/dp/B002ZDQ87E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1338509921&sr=8-2

My dxdiag : (Also , thank you in advance for your help !)

And as the guy says , i'm missing an important port on my 450w , so also you cant forget that i need dem 700w and the ports that are needed for the graphic card.

But thank you. : P.Any 500w or greater power supply should meet your needs and have the necessary cable to power the video card (I assume that's what you're talking about when you say that the current one lacks the port (?) the video card needs). 700w is a bit excessive for that build and you might save yourself a bit of money getting a slightly lower wattage PSU, unless you're planning on adding a second card later or doing something else extreme in the future.

I'm only running a 650w supply with a Phenom II X4 and two ATI cards (using Crossfire) in a fully loaded system with no power issues at all.Thank you for your answer , well , a guy at some random PC markets in belgium told me after looking at my computer that it would be better getting a 700w , and it was missing something atm. I dont remember if its a cable , i think its a cable or a port.

I really dont know what to do. <.<

Solve : Video Card Serious Error?

Answer»

HP Pavillion a1600n with Win XP

Just got a "serious error" causing a blue screen shutdown (whatever that is). MS message says I need to make sure my video card driver is updated. I don't have any hardware updates waiting from MS but should I check with HP? Any suggestions about what I should do? Thanks. Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All

Allan, was my previous post the info you asked for? Thanks. This does look like it's caused by your video driver. HP only has one version of the driver available on their website. It's the same driver you're running (version 8.2.0.8 ). However you MAY try uninstalling it and then installing a fresh copy. Here is a link to the file if you need it:

Ok so im upgrading from an Asus laptop cause i want to get into pc gaming. I play Minecraft mostly and League of Legends but im looking to get a pc that can play BF3, Skyrim, Diablo III and so on. I want a really nice running pc that i can play most games on medium to high settings with no/little lag. I have a friend who helped me a little, but i dont know much about all the specs i need and what parts are COMPATIBLE together.

I would suggest getting a better graphics card then that if you are really getting into gaming. I would look at getting the Ati Radeon 6950 or a Geforce 570 from Evga.Yeah I would suggest at least a HD 6790 if you're looking to get into gaming, for some measure of future proofing.
We'll walk you through building your first system, no problem!
http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements/
At least a GTX 560 or HD 6950 for decent resolutions at max settings. with 8XAA/AF, so I'm estimating at probably 1600x900. You could deal with a top 20 graphics card so long if you dialed back the settings a little; a HD 6850 will run BF3 at 1080p at mid settings >60 FPS.
http://videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+6850
The HD 6850 has the best price/performance as of today.
Also, I think 16 GB is rather overkill, for gaming, it would come in handy if you were looking to do video editing on a massive scale and running virtualization clusters, but for a "budget gaming PC" I honestly think 8 GB will suffice.
You should look at the equivalent Intel processors:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gaming-cpu-core-i3-2100-phenom-ii-x6-1075t,2859-8.html
Due to their superior single-threaded performance even the i3 2100 trumps the X4 965 in games. Also, if you choose the i3 2120 you will be able to upgrade to the Ivy Bridge 3XXX processors, which SUPPORT all Sandy Bridge chipsets.
I also wouldn't spend more than $50 on the PC chassis for gaming, because the cash would be more well-served being put towards beefier components.
Here is what I would choose:
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ($99.99)

You are an assembler.
The parts that you quoted cost HDD($99.99)+Phenom II X4($119.99)+16GB RAM($87.99)+Sidewinder X4 KB($47.99)+500W Corsair PSU($79.99)+Asus A75 Motherboard($114.99)+HD 6750 HIS($99.99)+Apevia ATX Chassis($64.99) = $715.92. Furthermore I would like to point out that your motherboard isn't compatible with your CPU your CPU is of the AM3 socket. You'll need to get an AM3 compatible motherboard, such as the AMD 890GX series/AMD 970 series.well i want to stick with AMD and i switched to the Sapphire Radeon 7750 before i looked back at this.Sticking with AMD CPUs won't give you a benefit today, AMD has already announced that they are already planning to withdraw from the higher-end market:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/AMD-APU-Z-Series-ARM-Tegra-3,14114.html
And you'll be stuck in terms of upgradability. The Bulldozers aren't great, and if you really are a die hard fan and want to upgrade further then there are the server CPUs...  There's no logical reason to stick with AMD when for a few bucks more you get a far more power efficient processor which can provide you with equal performance, you'll be able to save on the PSU too...
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=289
i3 2100 vs X4 965 BE. Keep in mind that the i3 is a dual core, and look at the 174W vs 100W power consumption.
When you level the playing field, quad core vs quad core, AMD seems awfully paltry...
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/102?vs=363
i5 2400 vs X4 965 BE.
Granted, the 2400 costs ($189.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074
Which is 70 bucks more than the Phenom. If you saved on your keyboard and motherboard and your PC case I really think you could squeeze out $70...

It is also beyond me why you got a HD 7750 when you could have gotten a HD 6790 for the same price.

http://videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Your HD 7750 isn't faring too well, it was designed to have no PCIe power connectors presumably for HTPC use, not gaming....
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7770-7750-benchmark,3135-6.html
It's worse than the GTX 550Ti in BF3, at 1680x1050 16xAF we're only getting 27-39 FPS..Definitely not a good bang for buck formula...

Solve : CD - Home movies?

I transfered home movies to a DVD-RW but can't get it to RUN on my laptop.  It plays on my VCR-DVD combo player but the laptop player just keeps cycling over and over with no results.  When I click on "Computer" it shows the DVD on the "D" drive but that all.  However, a DVD from the video store plays with no PROBLEM.  Any ideas?   Thx MicromosHave you tried using other type of dvd -r instead and what burning software do you use? Use the VERIFY option when copying/burning the movie. No, the only DVD I have is a RW.  This wasn't burned on a computer just a DVD-VCR combination machine.  I can't figure out why it plays on a DVD machine but not on my laptop DVD player.   My laptop is a new Windows 7 and I haven't learned how to BURN a DVD yet anyhow.  But, that's a question for another time.   W7 MAKES it so easy. START + WINDOWS DVD MAKER.

Add your files and burn.

Solve : low battery in mobile?

Answer»

Hello
Recently, I receive an email that warns me about using mobile in low battery. It said that radio wave of mobile in low battery is high and can effect on body. So it's recommend that do not use your mobile and do not call. Also, I see this point in some health care web site.
Is it true? Is the radio wave of mobile in low battery status has serious effect on body?

thanks
No, i it wee true it would be sensational news. The subject has been reviewed EVEN before cell phones were widely deployed. This type of emission is called "non-ionizing radiation" without thermal heating. Which means that is is less dangerous than sunlight.

To do real harm electromagnetic envisions must have a very high energy level.  Cell phones never reach that level.

In contrast, sunlight can and does burn your skin. But nobody ever  postulates  sunlight might enter your brain and makes you stupid. Actually, some infra red energy from the sun does enter the surface of the brain. So far there is no law to prevent it.

More harm is none by two sensational e-mail stories than  a dozen cell phones on your head.

Bear in mind that the purpose of cell phones is to communicate, not cook eggs. To cook on egg would require the output of 500 cell phones.

EDIT:
There is an article on Wikipedia, but most of it is hypothetical. But there is a recommendation that children should use a hands free headset to ease the fears of parents. It sounds reasonable.  If the parents are at ease, the children will do better.

Well, they almost have that in London. They just send in the Fog.

Get up to date, Geek, those London fogs stopped about 60 years ago, after the Clean Air Act of 1954 (I think) banned coal burning in urban areas. People had to use "smokeless fuel" such as coke or weird products with names like Coalite and Rexco or else go over to gas or electricity.
As I understand it infra-red and ultra-violet light cannot travel through opaque materials anymore than visible light. It is infact the absorption of the latter that helps form Vitamin D as well as eventually give us a sunburn. Other frequencies of electromagnetic radiation have more or less "penetrating power".

Of course whenever there is thought of things passing through our body, there will be alarmists talking about it being inherently dangerous, without any conclusive studies. Maybe if we tell them about Cosmic radiation they'll seal themselves in lead and we won't have to hear from them again.

The wavelengths used by cellphones are not known to be dangerous. This doesn't conclude that they are perfectly safe, but anything trying to paint it's danger as a cold-hard fact is simply wrong. I'm not a fan of cellphones myself but I don't consider them inherently dangerous. I think the only real danger of cellphones is when people use them when they shouldn't, such as while driving or doing something similar that requires them to be watching and paying attention to their task and not checking to see if any of their friends commented on their like of an LOLCat picture, but that's a problem with people, not technology.

My favourite part is that I know somebody who completely believes this stuff. They will flip out if they even see you using a cellphone near them, because they are animate it will injure their health. My original meeting with this person was a one-sided rant about how I shouldn't be using a cellphone because it will take years off my life. Make me sterile, and other made up crap, often involving scientific words she clearly didn't understand. After a minute, I finally realized she had mistaken my MP3 player as a cellphone. (When I quickly fixed her various errors- one of which was saying that cellphones emit "theta radiation" which to my understanding only exists in Star Trek episodes at the moment), as well as telling her that the device I was holding was not a cellphone of any sort but rather a MP3 player she concluded with "never mind" and went back to what she was doing before as if nothing happened.

Later, I saw her outside. Smoking a cigarette.  My father was an electrical power engineer (a real engineer) for 40 years (big stuff, he started with 11 kV local stuff and ended up commissioning 400 kV "supergrid" transmission systems) (he's still ALIVE, aged 92) and he is a very matter-of-fact person not given to believing in woo science. A few years ago a "save the children from EM radiation" scare was going on in the UK tabloid newspapers and people were saying "my little Johnny got leukemia and his bed was only 3 feet from an electric cable in the wall". There was a protest by a group of residents where a 400 kV line was going to be routed so that some homes would be either almost under or directly under conductors. I asked him if he thought there was any danger, and he said "I know that the jury is out on whether there is much danger, but I personally wouldn't like to live under a line". He said he had often felt oddly depressed and cold when within a few metres of a supergrid line. He didn't know whether it was just psychological but even if it was, that was sufficient reason to avoid proximity.

Re. the OP, why would the battery charge state make any difference?

Interesting! But that is a very high power line, too, far more power, voltage, and presumably RF emissions than a cellphone. I don't doubt myself that there could very well be some PHYSIOLOGICAL response to RF interference, particularly in the brain which deals quite heavily in having a specific chemical balance as well as being "electrically sensitive" in many ways; we probably know more about the Moon than we do about how our own brains work. On the one hand, of course, low voltage EM probably won't do permanent harm, my logic is that the Earth's Magnetic field is more powerful than most such low-power devices. One could even reason that for high-power transmission lines it could be some sort of "distortion" of the magnetic lines of force of the Earth's magnetic field that could Disrupt nerve impulses in some as of yet unknown manner, (but this is pure conjecture on my part with no real facts or research). Add to this the fact that if that you'd also be near that transmission line if things went sour with it and it's no wonder people prefer to live elsewhere.

I work in a finance office of a legal organisation. We authorise and process fees and payments and do audit and financial monitoring, and as you might expect, accuracy, care and attention to detail are vital. (They are good things to have in any job, of course.) Recently some staff contracts came up for renewal and one person was most aggrieved that she did not get an offer. She had caused lots of expensive PROBLEMS because she did almost exactly what you described above (her puppy's facebook album or some pink shoes on eBay or a racist joke or her football team) and she kept paying large sums of money to the wrong people or totally wrong amounts to the right people (10 times too much or too little) etc. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 02, 2012, 03:02:32 AM
A few years ago Chinese researchers apparently found that in those children who have a certain gene, EM radiation doesn't damage DNA but seems to inhibit DNA repair of damage from other causes, which may explain leukemia clusters near power lines, which was a big scare topic in the 1970s and 80s.

Solve : dell latitude d620 will not power up!?

Answer»

Recently my laptop went into sleep mode due to low BATTERY and would not come back on again! I ended up having to pull the batteries out. I left it to charge up but it still wouldn't come on! The lights power up, such as the Number LOCK light and Scroll Lock light. I have connected the laptop up to an external MONITOR and there was still no SIGN of life!

I stripped the laptop down to find that the fan was not FUNCTIONING at all! The laptop was working spot on before it broke.

Can anyone help?Depress power button until it turns on or turns off.  If there is no response, it's dead.

Solve : internal speakers/headphone jack problem?

Answer»

My laptop speakers eventually stopped working after I accidentally violently yanked out my headphone plug from the jack.

I could ignore that because I usually just use headphones anyway, later down the road however, I found my speaker jack so messed up internally(WITHOUT needing to take a peek at it) that it makes my speakers LOUDLY  either beep screech shriek or buzz, and this is not a system beep that is quiet but noticeable this is a full on messed up audio problem, when I actually have audio playing (not just the INTERNAL fan SOMEHOW coming up in the audio stream, *censored* manufacturers and their laziness.) the audio plays distorted while buzzing etc, should I just open up the laptop and bend it back into place so it does not cause problems, or should I just rip it out? I could rip it out because I have already ordered an USB sound card with headphone/mic jack, but that wont fix the problem, the bigger problem this cause is that my laptop freezes as a result of whenever it happensWhy blame the maunf's ? ?

Why blame the maunf's ? ?
Sounds like your aggressive nature dealing with hardware may be the issue...

The hardware incident was an accident, I was blaming the lazy manufacturers for not making a sound card that blocks the noise of the fans appearing in the audio stream.

But I just need to make a decision on what to do here with the jack, that and how to open my laptop, even when I unscrew EVERYTHING it will not open so I am really frustrated at the moment.

Oh and by everything I just mean the screws on the bottom part of the casing and not the large components of the laptopYou'll have to open it up & repair the jack.Depending on the MODEL of laptop, there may be screws you've missed. Sometimes they're hidden under the battery, hard drive or memory COVERS, keyboard (once it's been unscrewed), and all sorts. The screws in the bottom are rarely the only ones that need unscrewed to get laptops open anymore.

However, unless you're absolutely sure you can get the laptop back together after you've opened it up, I wouldn't take it apart. They're not always the easiest things to put back together. But if you insist on continuing, I'd suggest laying the screws out noting where they were removed from so you can get it back together. There can be quite a few of various lengths and sizes (my wife's laptop had 17 screws to remove just to get the thing open).

It MEANS partition, not drive. Unfortunate the wording is  misleading.
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm
Using that  program, reduce the size of the source partition to be  the size that will fit inside of the target partition. This will take some time. It may be a good idea to defrag  it fist.

The only program I know that can do the whole thing reliably in one pass was the old Norton Ghost. You can use programs like GPart, but it is not as RELIABLE. Drive Image XML is very good, withing its limits.

Solve : How to remove Findal Draft PDF Converter as default print option??

Answer»

Currently, when I try to print something from the web, when I hit CTRL + P and the Print dialogue box opens, for some reason the default printer name shows Final Draft PDF Converter, not the HP printer that I use. I have gone into Control Panel>PRINTERS & Faxes and my HP printer is checked as the default.  And when I go to print form the web and choose the HP printer from the drop-down menu in the Print dialogue box, the next time I print from the web, the HP printer setting is not "remembered" by the system, the printer name reverts to Final Draft PDF Converter again.

I do have Final Draft on my COMPUTER but have never PRINTED from it. Why would the settings have CHANGED, and more importantly, how do I set my HP printer as the default for web printing?  By the way, I have no problem with Word documents - the HP printer comes up as my default printer.
If you don't use it i'd un-install it...

Solve : DDNS and UPnP question?

Answer»

I have purchased an ip cam that i want to be able to view over the internet and on Lan.  I have GOT this to work but I just need someone to clear something up for me. When I go into the Device status of the Camera I notice that DDNS Status says connecting all the time, but under UPNP status it says UPnP Succeed. This is all good that it's working, but it's left me a bit unsure about how I am connected. Would you say I am only connected through UPnP or through DDNS aswell? Like I say I can view my cam over the internet now outside of the Lan, but I'm confused.

The other thing I wanted to ASK is if I am only connected through UPnP will the ip automatically be updated for the Cam if I have a domain name for the ip? You need to understand the distinction between DNS and UPnP.

Solve : CPU running hot, fan running continuously, it's not the dirt!?

Answer»

I have an HP laptop dv9000, running Win XP. I run Speedfan to monitor temps. All of a sudden, I noticed the CPU was running at least 10 degrees C hotter than usual; i.e., with CPU at 0% it was running at least 40 degrees where before it was about 30.

I took the computer apart and cleaned the dirt out of the heat sink.

Now, as soon as I turn the computer on, the fan comes on and runs loudly and continuously, regardless of temp. And the CPU is STILL running about 5 degrees warmer than usual!

What is going on?!?Please provide more information. For many CPUs 40 C is  mild.
You may have a background task running.
What does the task manager say?The CPU is an Intel T7200 2 GHz Core 2. Yes, I know that 40 is not that hot (at 100% load it runs above 60) but the point is that the idle temp has jumped about 10 degrees for no apparent reason. This suggests there is some malfunction. I've had the computer about 5 years, and it's always idled at about 30, maybe 35 in high ambient room temp.  Task Manager and Speedfan both show CPU USAGE at or very close to zero when I'm not doing something.

And there's also the fan: it comes on IMMEDIATELY when I turn on the computer, even if the computer has been off overnight. The fan runs at a constant high RPM, and it's loud and annoying! It does it in Windows, in BIOS, and in BartPE. My computer has NEVER done this before!

Would a fault in the fan itself cause something like this? You room temperature is about 25 C.
What eat temp do you SEE after the machine has been off for an hour and your turn it on? It should start near 30 and more up to 40.

Normally that Intel design can go from 0 to 100 C and be inside its rated range. It is a mobile processor, which means it can throttle up and down as need be. That why I thought you had a new background process running. But it it does it in the PE, it would not be a background task.

It is not a malfunction. it is an aberration. In other words, a unusual departure from expected or historical behavior. It is not a failure.

In bother forums people have asked about the aberrant temp readings of the Intel T7200 and thee is no clear answer.
Did you remove and replace any old thermal paste or thermal tape?
This can make a 3-8 Degrees difference when replacing it with a high quality solution.

I've been using ARCTIC Silver 5 EVER since I replaced the motherboard about 2.5 years ago. I cleaned the old paste off and put on some new when I cleaned the heat sink last week.

Just read a REVIEW on this laptop and generally it is very well rated.I did notice that one of its mentioned attributes is that it comes with a full 3 year warranty. So DEPENDING on how long you have had it if the problem is not a battery (because i doubt that 3 years is also on the battery) you might still have use of the warranty. Which battery do you have the 28whr or the 65whr battery? truenorthSeeing your minds' run I dare to suppose that updating issue are playing primary ROLE. My mind was NOT running in the direction of an upgrade to any of the software.I was concerned with a hardware issue such as the charger/adapter or the battery itself.truenorth

Solve : Should i get more ram??

Answer»

Xp
1.25gb DDR ram
Radeon 9600xt (ordered a HD3650 hoping it will work)
Going for swtor

My ram is 256mb short of requiremtn
But my video card ram is 256mb above, so will it work out?

My pc max ram supported is 2gb
I got 1.25 so is it worth replacing my 256 stick with a 1gb(this pc is a temporary so don't need uber power)

I'm using a flash DRIVE as a page file as 1.80 gb

So COMPETITIVELY speaking, how many mb ram does my page file equal?
I know they ain't the same, but as far as speed contribution and comparison

WOULD u say my 1.8th pagedile would equal 100mb ram? I hear ram is 20 times faster than USB

But it all ads up right?

FOR YHE GALAXY!!For how cheap RAM is these days I suggest just spending 20 bucks and get the most you can that is compatible. Will really speed things up other than gaming as well.
Go get a 1GB stick and put it in.
I think you will be amazed at how much faster it is then the USB1.  DDR RAM is not as cheap as DDR3.
2.  His PC only supports 2GB.
3.  Never use a USB flash drive for a pagefile.  That's PROBABLY the big slowdown.yeah im paying 25$ for 1gb ddr ram (cheapest on newegg!)

got 1gb stick with a old 256mb stick, so im sure its slowing down my 1gb stick as well..

Why would my USB PF be a slow down? my current HDD is IDE, not even SATA

so usb is faster, right?

tbh, i have tried many times the last 2 months with and without USB PF, and i defintely think its faster with the USB

is it worth for me to pay the 25$ to get that extra ram? considering i dont know how much longer i will use this PC...could be a few months, could be a few weeksTo answer this question "..could be a few months, could be a few weeks". If those are your maximum intended use limits i would say no it is NOT worth it.truenorth Quote from: STC on June 08, 2012, 01:23:07 PM

1.  The size of the stick does not determine the speed.
2.  An old IDE drive is faster than a USB flash drive.  Theoretical maximums:
IDE (ATA)- 100-133MB/sec
USB flash - 60MB/sec
3.  No.

Solve : No power after power cut?

Answer»

We had a power cut Sunday night while I was on the pc. I unplugged it straight AWAY  hoping that would protect it . Power come back so I plugged it back in and turned it on but nothing happened, all I get is flickering light on the keyboard and mouse and nothing else. I'm thinking PSU but not certain. That sound likely? ... Cheers guysWell that would probably be the best place to start. However depending on the situation of the "power out" that could have a large bearing on what damage might have been done. For instance if it was due to a scheduled or even non scheduled loss of power in your area then the damage if any would tend to be less than if it was from a close by lightening strike. One causes power loss the other causes a surge or excess of power instantly. Both are not without possible negative affects on computers.truenorthCheers mate. I did ring a IT expert who said he doubts it's the PSU. He said he didn't think that was the problem due to the fact I'm getting flickering lights on mouse and keyboard. I know from past experience tho that isn't always correct.

"that isn't always correct"  your correct that isn't always true. The PSU provides a variety of voltages and via a variety of connectors so while the "expert" may have doubts i personally would want to verify that and eliminate it if possible and the easiest and quickest way is to install (even if only temporarily) a PSU of equal or greater capacity and OBSERVE the results.truenorthToggle the black power switch on the back of the PSU with the PC plug removed...
Un plug it and reconnect to the PC and power back up...Just tried unplugging power chord and plugging it back in, still same OUTCOME. I think my PSU is buggered. I did notice a while back that it was starting to BOOT up slowly. I've read this could be a sign of a dieing PSU, maybe the power cut just finished it off? Did you do as i suggested ? ?Yea mate tried it, same outcome. You think that sounds like buggered PSU? Yepper...
Another item that will cause these symptoms is if it's an older PC that has a modem card it tends to take the 1st hit...if it does remove all power to the PC...remove the card and re-boot.
If the above does NOT apply borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater wattage amd swap it in there overnite to test...

Best of Luck.Pc is around 4 years old mate, I just had a look and I didn't see a modem card. I was told it could also be my graphics cards. I tried disconnecting them as well but that didn't work. I'll try get hold of a second hand PSU and try that. cheers for the help pal Quote from: jay_1978 on June 05, 2012, 09:48:55 AM

Cheers mate. I did ring a IT expert who said he doubts it's the PSU. He said he didn't think that was the problem due to the fact I'm getting flickering lights on mouse and keyboard.

You would be right to doubt this, since it's just plain wrong! A faulty PSU can be the cause of nearly any observable symptom; whether certain lights flash or whether fans spin and so forth isn't indicative that the power supply is working properly, just that those devices are getting power. Sort of like when you have a brown-out, your incandescent light bulbs will still work, but a lot of other stuff might not. The various components in a machine have different tolerances as for how far from the norm they will work.

It might be possible that the power supply is faulty in that it gives PWR_GOOD for a few seconds, then stops. If a machine does not RECEIVE PWR_GOOD, the CPU will sit in a reset loop. If this is the case than the PSU is actually working exactly as intended; parts of it's insides may have been hooped by a surge as the power cut or something to that effect. Good quality power supplies are designed to sacrifice themselves in that case. How a "sacrificed" power supply acts depends on how it was damaged. Not all power supplies just stop working; your's still seems to do something, but something kicks in afterward to stop it from powering up properly.

It could also be the graphics card, too. Really the only way to find out what is wrong is to swap out various parts with known good components.

The only way to really test that though would be to swap in a known-good power supply.
Got some IT bloke coming tomorrow, he reckons it sounds like the PSU, plus the pc was starting to get slower which he said is a indication of a dying power supply. Thanks for all ya help

Solve : Computer Freezing Issue?

Answer»

When temperatures outside are high (80+ degrees fahrenheit), and I'm playing a game as well as having firefox and other things open (basically high loads), my computer will sometimes freeze up and POWER to all of my peripherals goes out, but the computer doesn't actually shut off until I hit the button.

I regularly monitor my CPU and GPU temperatures, and my CPU hovers between 35-45 degrees celsius while my GPU hovers between 45-55 degrees celsius. SOMEONE mentioned to me that it could be memory failure, so I ran a memtest, but it didn't come up with any errors through 1 and a half passes.

I also just replaced my PSU which was my oldest piece of hardware so that can't possibly be the issue since it was happening before I replaced it.

Any ideas on what could be causing my freezes would be greatly appreciated.Next step would be a hard drive diagnostic test and posting your computer specs. or model. From the numbers you posted regarding temps. in F, there is not an indication of heating problem since those hardware are still unknown. My current hardware:
CPU: i5 2500K 3.3 GHz, ~3.6GHz
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 560ti
Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
RAM: 8 GB Ripjaws DDR3
HDD: 1 TB WD Caviar Black
Windoes 7 64-bit Home edition

Is there any program you recommend for hard drive test? I ran a test with the one provided on WD's website and it says there are no issues, but I'm not sure how RELIABLE that is.

Solve : Screen is blurry after new graphic card.?

Answer»

I just installed a new graphic card and the screen on higher resolution are blurry, if I go down to 800x600 the screen is clear. I have the latest driver, the graphic card is a GTX 670 and I got windows 7. At first I THOUGHT it was the graphic card but last time I got a AMD 7970 and it had the same PROBLEM, so I returned it and installed my old GTX 9800GTX+ which have none of these problems.

But it's not the whole screen, it's just the RIGHT side of the screen that is blurry, the rest of the screen is clear. The monitor is a 1680x1050 Fuitsu simens, on the Information tab in on the screen it says, L22W - 11, 65 KHz / 60Hz, analogue and what seems to be a serial number, if those are any helpful.Never mind, a factory reset on the screen FIXED the problem.

Solve : USING MULTIPLE PRINTERS FOR PRINT JOBS?

Answer»

Let us say I have 5 printers CONNECTED  to my laptop. I want to set them up so that when I hit the print button the pages of the document are distributed EVENLY among the printers. Example when I print a 20  page document I want each of the 5 printers to print 4 pages of the document. The idea is to have all my printers share the print load regardless of the amount of pages the document has.

I attached a picture which shows what I am trying to explain.

Thanks in advance for your help

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]There are many distributed-printing solutions. If you Google for that phrase you will find plenty of ideas. For example Multi Print 2.0

Reply to Salmon Trout

Multi print does not have the feature. please take a good look at the photo. so you can better understand what I am asking.

Multi print just sends the same document to all printers so I end up with five separate COPIES of the 20 page document.

If the printing is done they way that is shown in the photo then I will end up with one 20 page document being printed at a much faster rate than usual (about 1/5 the usual time it would take one printer if all the printer print at the same speed).Hi

Interesting question but logic says why?
Most printers if they are inkjet take as long to purge the head and pick up the first page as the time  to print 5 pages. Also the head purging can waste as much ink as printing 3 pages.
Five  printers on standby would use as much POWER as a single printer printing.

And if it is a laser printer most print 22 pages per minute after warm up of 20 seconds so it will take longer in that situation to print the 20 pages on 5 printers than on 1 printer.

I intend to use inkjet printers and the amount of ink or the price of the Ink that will be used is not an issue. The printers wont be bought either, I am a computer technician so I have LOTS of them laying around. Power consumption is also not an issue. Also consider that colour documents print slower than black and white documents. The main concern is speeding up printing of large documents.

For example lets say the amount of time it takes after you click on the print button to the end of purging the head is 2 minutes and it takes another 10 minutes to print the 20 page colour document on one printer. That means it would take a total of 12 minutes to print the document.

If you had five printers working simultaneously the 20 page colour document would take 4 minutes to print. I think that is a much better printing speed then using one printer.

Solve : General Fault Errors....?

Answer»

I was on a website and computer seemed to have frozen up. I pushed the reset button and a black screen with white letters on it came up with "General Fault Error" and then a bunch of letters = numbers. I pushed reset again and a different error message popped up on a blue screen something about "trapped something or other" I can't remember since I seem to get a different message each time I push reset; including "read DISC error - press control, alt, delete to restart".

I have always gotten some beeping upon startup (since built in July 2008) but I am not able to determine if short/long sounds and everything seemed to be working. I have noticed for a few months now that I get the "read disk error" and have to pull the SATA cable from the MB and plug back in then it is fine for a while. I don't know if this has anything to do with the issues now.

I googled the "general Fault Error" and read that it could be MEMORY, power SUPPLY, cpu or software. I need help narrowing this down. I don't have "play money" to spend on unnecessary components.

I have included my specs on my profile if this is any help at all or if there is further clarification needed, I'm happy to accommodate. I just need this issue resolved asap as I work from home on the computer and I am losing money everyday that it is down.

I'll suggest all Free fixes to narrow things down...

DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...
DLoad and run MemTest to check the RAM...
Borrow a known GOOD PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...I will try these. Thank you for your input. I will post whether they work or not to solve the issue. The MemTest came back passing with no errors after leaving it run 20 times overnight.
The SeaTool Diagnostic Tool for the HDD came back passing all tests.
I still have not found a PSU to try.

will u consider to system restore via cd or reformat all again? if the memtest okay. n the disk test ok... that just mean system or worst.. try system restore or repair via windows cd 1st. it will not del anything except the system folder data n such.Keep us posted...you've eliminated 2 possibilities so good job... No, I will not consider a restore/reformat. I have just done that a few months ago for other WinXP related issues and that was a royal pain since my HDD is 250GB and I don't like to have to SIT for hours reinstalling everything. This is not software related.

I am beginning to think it is the PSU is not a high enough wattage as I now remember I can not plug in my second HDD unless I unplug the first one. My video card, I just read, takes 300W itself and I only have a 600W PSU. Working on this test right now.

Thanks for the input though, appreciate it much. that fine.. that mean u know what going on.. but system repair does not invovle any formating.. it just replace all ur system data that are misiing due to various reason like virus n more.. it just repair ur system n not touch any data n programming. hard disk size is out of question. dont use actual fromat.. the fast format is fine... but u can always keep the system file intact.. just leave the file system when asking to do so n windows will install without anysystem directories change... but then again.. it just my opinion. but since i also got trouble with my pc. then help each other is what matter here right.. i hope u will get solution n get ur pc live again. mine is disaster. poor me

Solve : USB Malfunction [Urgent]?

Answer»

I'm a GCSE student in the UK (obviously) and today my USB suddenly stopped working. I GET a message saying that it can't recognise my USB. It's a 4gb Memory 2 Go. I've tested it on 4 computers. 3 Windows XP (SP3 Home & Pro), 1 Windows 7 (Home prem.). I didn't work on any of them.

I had so much work on it, most of it's due in within 2-3 weeks.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this problem. You can try to recover the data using some available free recovery programs. However due to the common results on so many computers i think you will be BEST served by trying to recreate that which was on the drive. It won't help in this instance but portable DRIVES are very susceptible to data corruption when certain phenomenon occur. So if it is data that is very important GIVEN the low costs of flash drives (particularly the size you have mentioned) make more than one copy. Here is a link to one of many that you can try.

good luck. Let us knowSorry about the bump.

It seems that there aren't an data recovery shops around here :/

Anyway, i'm practically done with my studies and just incredibly happy that the USB didn't break down any sooner.

Solve : Cannot format my sd card?

Answer»

Hello guys I have one sd card that cannot be formatted... I just want to format it, I don't want to save or recover any files... I tried following

1. Tried to format it by putting fat, ntfs, check fast formatting, uncheck fast formatting and all other combinations there but nothing worked. The message is always: "Windows unable to complete the format"

2. I went to Disk MANAGEMENT and there it showing my sd card with black line (The normal is blue) and saying 969MB, Unallocated. Then I pressed right click on it --> New simple volume and when I clicking to format (either as FAT, either as FAT 32, with checked Fast Formatting or not, or even without formating) I have this message "The request could not be performed because of an I/O DEVICE error"

3. I tried by going to cmd and writing "chkdsk /r" this not helped too

4. Tried by writing on the cmd "Format E:".. The output was "Insert new disk for drive E: and press ENTER when ready..." I pressed enter and then this message appear:

The type of the file system is RAW.
The new file system is FAT.
Verifying 0M
The specified cluster size is too big for FAT.

5. I tried by downloading the SDFormatter from micro sd official site but it say that my sd card is not supported.

6. I tried to use the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but there just write bad disk and that the type is logical. I cannot use any button

7. I tried to check for error by clicking right click on sd card --> Properties --> TOOLS --> Error Checking --> Check now but it says that the check could not be performed because sd card is not formatted. Format it now? If I press yes i go to problem 1.

I don't now what else i can do. Please HELP...Sorry to say, but the card is dead.

Solve : Computer reboot issue?

Answer»

I have a M350 IXT computer case and a VIA LN10000EG motherboard. When I do control alt delete the computer will shut the processes off but does not re initialize. The same thing happens when I issue the command reboot with LINUX. I am USING Linux Centos 4.4 command line only. Is there a bios setting or jumper setting I am missing? The power supply is a PICO 90 watt power supply with 12volt dc input. In order to reboot the computer I have to push and hold the power switch in for a few seconds to get it to turn it off and then push the power button again to get the computer to come back on and then all is OK and it initializes fine. I need to resolve this issue because the computer is going to be a remote site and I will need to reboot it via SSh from time to time.

Thanks in advance for any help. What you said seems to be the normal way most PCs work. This is CONTROLLED by the motherboard and the BIOS.
What kind of BEHAVIOR would you like?
Do you want to issue a command to shut down and them reboot two minutes later? That would require some additional hardware that you would custom build. Those sort of things are sometimes called "watchdog timers". If a message is not seen after a length of the, the timer shuts the of the equipment, waits, then turns it back on. Does that describe what you want?

+1 on this. If it is under warranty, it is always better to replace.Yeah, if you're seeing exposed wiring, it's probably shorting the right SPEAKER. It could probably be easily soldered back on, but if you just got them, I'd take them back and demand a replacement.

Solve : Digital Media Player?

Hello Geek-9pm,

I am ADDRESSING this DIRECTLY to you because of our previous communication on this subject. I hope that is in order. I have checked the link you gave me for Amazon.com. They don't ship most of their items to Canada. Amazon.ca has a few items, but the selection is poor, and the same items are far more expensive.

I have selected 4 items from eBay.ca, but I am unable to decide because I don't understand the comprehensive specifications that are posted on the web pages. I cannot attach them because they are HTML. Here are the links to these four. Could you please help by giving your opinion of them.

Best regards.

First of all, please to not address a post directly to me. This is not my site. I just frequent it.

The first and third links appear to be the same one I got from eBay.

As I mentioned earlier, I recommend buyer for a reputable vendor. These vendors on  eBay, the two I refer to, are  not inside the USA or Canada. They are in China.

So you would be taking a chance. But the price is right..It is not always easy to know, what one should not do. Please accept my apologies for addressing you directly.

The item in the first link shows 720P, and the one in the second link, 1080P. Does this make an appreciable difference to the video quality? The 1080p is better, ,if your TV can do it. I had to get on the internet to find the specifications of my TV.
The Display Resolution is 720P and the Panel Resolution is 1366(H):768(V)
If I get the media player with 1080P capability would it display a better picture than the player with 720P capability? Quote from: floccinaucini on June 08, 2012, 02:12:52 PM

No. Your TV cannot display 1080 pixels vertically. The panel only has 768 vertical pixels.
Thank you.
Best regards. If I connect the 1080P player to my TV, which has only 768(V), will it not function at all or give a bad picture?Apparently not!
The vendor makes no reference to either NTSC or PAL.
When a vendor can not fully describe his product - buyer beware! The item in my number one link above (720P), says 'COMPATIBLE with NTSC and PAL'. Is this a better bet?I would say yes. I am not sure why they called it 1080p. The never make CLEAR what that means.  So that makes think they don't understand their product. It has to be NTSC or PAL  to be compatible with all TV sets. Please confirm, either NTSC or PAL makes it compatible with all TV sets. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 08, 2012, 04:12:53 PM

There are i-suffix and p-suffix video standards. The number is the vertical pixel count and i means interlaced and p indicates progressive (non-interlaced). I thought it was extremely widely known that 1080p means "1080 progressive", that is, a resolution of 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically, progressive scan (that is, not interlaced) - TV sets have moved on since the days of the NTSC 525 line (480i) and PAL 625 line (576i) interlaced analog video formats.

Solve : Dotted, contrasted moving lines everywhere.?

Answer»

So here's what happened. I was playing a game and I hit a key a bit abnormally harder than one should hit a key on a keyboard and the screen just flipped out. There are red lines everywhere and they SOMETIMES move around and they are dotted. Sometimes, but rarely, I move my laptop and the PATTERNS change, sometimes making the screen completely red and sometimes, making the screen normal. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic on a DELL Inspiron 1525 laptop. I'm guessing that it is just the hardware under the D key that has shifted or something because I can still get it back to normal by moving it, but I don't know how to open the laptop to get at the parts to re-sit the CPU. If I am off track with my prediction on what happened, please tell me what you think happened and how to fix it. Thanks guys! Here is a screenshot of my desktop.  What it sounds like is the LVDS cable may have come unseated from the motherboard. if you do not feel comfortable opening the laptop please take it to a local repair shop to have this checked.  if you want to check this yourself you can by opening the laptop and reseating the cable under the top strip above the keyboard. refer to the following video to see how to do this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txCMlP_syDs Quote from: Larry D. +1 on this diagnosis. The cable could either be loose, or it is ALSO possibly damaged and needs to be replaced. If you have never opened a laptop before I would highly recommend taking it to a local repair shop.

Good Day!!!

I have an Toshiba Laptop with Win7.. I have an problem with sound.. The sound is coming on both the headset and INBUILT speakers simultaneously. What could be the CAUSE for this??? HOPING for speedy response. This could be a shorted / FAULTY headphone jack. The best way to check is to slightly move the headphone plug in circles while pluged in to the laptop to listen for the internal SPEAKER to cut in and out. PLEASE BE GENTLE WHEN DOING THIS AS excessive preasure can break the jack or further worsten the problem. If the internal speaker cuts in and out you must replace the internal headphone jack.thanks dear..

Solve : PXE Error = BIOS/CMOS Setup access is not happening?

Answer»

I have an issue with trying to access the BIOS/CMOS setup.  When the laptop boots up it gives me the PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable along with the PXE-M0F Exiting PXE ROM.  I have tried booting several times and pressing the F12 key which is for the Boot Manager with no SUCCESS.  It just goes right into the PXE error again.  I have also tried pressing the F2 key (Setup Utility) and get the same results...PXE error.  I am unable to check the boot order & CMOS setup.  I have powered down the laptop, removed the battery and removed and reseated the HDD making sure it is seated all the way.  It still gets me the PXE error.

When I get the PXE error I have to press the escape key to get it to stop beeping and exit out of the PXE error.  Then it brings me to a menu asking if i want to start Windows normally.  When I do so the laptop loads the desktop.  I have found that some of the keys on the keyboard are not working.  The keyboard cable is firmly attached.  I am not sure if the keyboard thing is part of the problem, THE problem or a result of some other problem.

The big thing I guess is being able to get to the BIOS/CMOS setups.

Your help/input is very much appreciated!

The Laptop info is as follows:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Service  Pack 2
Manufacturer:   Toshiba
Model:   Satelite A305
Processor:   Intel Core2 Duo CPU   T6400 2.00 GHz
Memory:   4 GB
System Type:   64 bit
You are the original owner - Right? How ole is it?

After everything else, this error would men the hard drive or its controller has gone bad. Often it is the hard drive, either because of rough treatment or overheating.  More often overheating. The hard drive typically does not get enough coiling. Yet most hard drives will take it. They can run  to 85 C and still work.

After all is said, you are at the point of trying a NEW hard drive. If you have already made regular backups of you system and data, all you need to do is get another drive.

Do not try to format the hard drive. If some of recent data is there, you may wish to get it back.

Do you have a recovery method ready to use?
I suspect a failing CMOS battery myself...It is actually my daughters laptop.  We bought it new for her in 2009 for college.  Last fall I had to replace the display monitor because somehow it got cracked.  At that time I had also taken the laptop apart and sprayed all of the dust balls out.  And for Christmas we got her a cooling pad (which doesn't mean she used it) but it was available to her.

I haven't made a backup of the files yet but I do have an external HDD that I use for backups.

She did bring me the recovery discs so that is a big help.

I'll start looking around for a new HDD.

..............Well, I will try the CMOS battery first and if that doesn't work then on to the HDD.The error could have been caused by the CMOS battery.
However, there is more involved with the PXE error.
Please come back after you change the CMOS battery.

If it is the Intel PXE, this may OFFER some insight.
Intel® Boot Agent
It may be trying to boot from a USB device.
EDIT:  Disk less workstation with PXE will boot from network . If it can. This happens when the hard drive is not ready to boot or has an invalid boot loader. The drive maybe repairable with revery console with fixboot and fixmbr.

I tried searching the net to see if I could find the cmos RTC battery.  Got a bunch of hits for the Lithium battery for running the laptop without the AC but nothing of what was needed.

I had gone to the Toshiba site and did not find anything there for the RTC so I posted in their forum.  There, one of their "Super Advisors" had directed me to the National Parts Depot so I gave them a call.

I gave NPD the model & serial numbers for the laptop and they said that the cmos RTC was considered part of the Motherboard and they did not have the individual RTC.  They suggested that I check with Toshiba Direct.

Toshiba Direct did not have the individual RTC either and suggested I contact Spare Parts Warehouse.

SPW said that the RTC was part of the Motherboard and asked if I would be purchasing a new Motherboard ($317) or a refurbished Motherboard ($222).  I thanked them for their time and hung up.

It appears the cmos RTC is not going to happen.  Over $200 for a nickel sized RTC battery is a little much.  I am willing to try a few lesser expensive suggestions first and if they are a bust as well then I'll put $317 towards a new laptop.
Well, let's go on. Maybe the cell is OK.
Here is a picture of the insides. Is the battery soldered on?
http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Batteries-and-Power/CMOS-battery-needs-replaced-Satellite-A305-S6872/td-p/175902

See if you can get the laptop to boot any kind of rotatable CD or DVD.The battery is definitely soldered on.  It has no markings on it either.

I have tried USING booting my Western Digital Data Life Guard Diagnostic disc (this laptop has a Western Digital HDD) and my Seagate Seatools Diagnostic disc (both of which I have used successfully in the past) and the laptop would not boot to either one.  The laptop went right to the PXE error for both.

I am not sure what the boot order is as I am unable to access it.Is there anything more we can try or am I out of luck?

Solve : Connect my PC to TV?

My understanding is that I should be able to do this using a USB cable. My TV has a port labled (USB in service only).

Question is; if I was to purchase a cable as listed below (assuming that it is the correct one)will this work and would this be all that I require for a trial?.   Thanks.

ROHS CompliantUSB ports are generally for data or devices, they don't do video feeds. If you want to display video from your computer on your TV, you need to find a cable that will connect to both your video CARD and your TV.

What kind of video ports do both your cvomputer and TV have? For best results, use a DVI or HDMI cable (if your computer and TV have the ports). If your computer has one (HDMI for example) and your TV has another (DVI for example) you can get cables that go from one to the other without having to get adapters (this is what I use on mine, HDMI to DVI cable).

You can also use a VGA port/cable (DB-15) to connect, but the results aren't as good.

All of this depends on what's available on your system and TV. If you can tell us more about your computer and TV (model numbers, ports, etc.) then we could make a better recommendation.  Quote from: quaxo on June 07, 2012, 10:02:28 PM

Thanks so much. After the info. that you provided I wasn't too concerned with my TV capabilities, but more concerned with my older PC. (Cisnet Intel Pentium D 820) (approx. 4yrs old) Anyway, the manual is long gone but I did find a HDMI port on my PC (at least a HDMI cable fits and I'm totally surprised) My TV, LG (47LH30) also has a HDMI as well as HDMI-DVI IN /RGB IN(PC) and a RS-232C IN. So , if I understand properly from what you suggested I should probably purchase a HDMI Male - to - Male cable. Is that correct? Thks.Yeah, if your computer has an HDMI port and so does the TV, a standard HDMI cable should do the trick. You can get an HDMI cable for under $10. Quote from: quaxo on June 07, 2012, 11:48:18 PM

Well I purchased a HDMI cable and I'm attempting to set up (Vista and my LG) using my NVIDIA (GeForce 210) Control Panel . Using "set up multiple displays" both monitors are detected and all looks OK. But when I click "Identify Displays" both icon monitors show # 1 on my desktop monitor and at the same time on my TV they both show #2. I have PLAYED with this for some time now but always receive the same results.Typically what shows on my TV is a blank desktop scene. I had a YouTube video photo minimized and when I maximize it, it shows on my TV but disappears from the desktop. I also tried to set this up using "Personalize" in the Control Panel but didn't get any results with that.
Any ideas? Thks.I ended up curing my connection problems by buying a Apple TV. Then I had an orange. Problem solved.
Thks., quaxo for your efforts. Quote from: naturegurl on June 09, 2012, 09:39:06 PM

I've encountered another situation that I sure would appreciate some help with. I'm very happy with my Apple TV, so much so, that I'm considering purchasing a second, to connect to my second TV. This particular TV does not have a HDMI port. I realize that I can purchase a HDMI to RCA cable. Reports that I have came across suggest that this type of cable is not suitable to connect from a PC to another device but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me(before I purchase a cable) whether or not this would work between the Apple TV and my older TV with RCA connections?. Should the answer be yes I'm assuming that the cable that I would require be a cable like this? 5Ft HDMI Male to 5RCA 5-RCA Audio Video AV Component Cable Gold Plated. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

Googled enough that I found my answer.

"Cables alone will not connect your Apple TV to a component only TV, you will need some sort of hardware converter. The problem with using such a device is that component doesn't carry HDCP which is necessary to play protected content from the iTunes store and without HDCP compatibility such content cannot be played".

Solve : I want to insrtall a new HDD in my laptop?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q705 laptop.  The HDD is about 4 years old now and I want to install a new one.
I have an upgrade disk for Vista Business but the computer didn't come with an actual OS boot disk.
I think I'm supposed to create it using the laptop itself but not sure how.
Can someone give me a little GUIDANCE?

I have already installed the new HDD and tried with my upgrade *censored* and got to the part where it tells me I have to have the real version of windows.  I shouldn't have to go BUY it if it's already on my computer??
I put the old HDD back in and it still runs, so I just need to figure out how to make the OS disk.
   Thanks,
JimYou can create an image of the old drive (or clone it) using disc imaging SOFTWARE (Acronis True Image or Macrium Reflect) and then restore it to the new drive. If you have an external drive that's the ideal place to store the image. If not, dvd's or cd's will do fine.I suggest you visit the website of the manufacturer of your computer to search for info on creating a restore disc from the recovery partition on your hard drive.

When I upgraded the hard drive in my laptop, I used the software from Western Digital, which was a special (Western Digital) version of Acronis TrueImage software, to clone my old drive to the new one.  To to this, you will need an external enclosure to put one drive in.  Alternatively, you could use a USB Hard Drive Adapter; however, an external enclosure would allow you to use your old hard drive as an external hard drive. up date.
I looked on the net a litle more and found instructions that say to put in a DVD r, and then look in the start menu for "Recovery Disc Creator"
I did that and it doesn't seem to be there.
I will try to follow the advice above.
ThanksIf you live in the U.S., I suggest this very inexpensive external enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182140   They're selling at a discount now and with free shipping.  I don't think you'll find a better deal if you want to minimize your cost.

I believe external enclosure is the same one I have.  It looks identical.  I'm assuming your drive is SATA, not IDE.  If it's IDE, you need an IDE version of the external enclosure.
I looked at the Acronis thing. It looks like it's for backing up a hard drive. I don't want to back it up.
I want to install a new one and start over. I just need a way to install the old OS.
I looked in my start menu and the Recovery Disc Creator is not there.
I searched for Recovery, and only see something for Office.True Image will allow you to create an exact image of your old hd and put it on your new hd. When you boot to the new hd everything will be as it was. However, if you truly want to start "from scratch" with a clean installation then you are correct, disc imaging is not for you (at this time - EVERYONE should use disc imaging on a regular basis). If you want a fresh installation of Windows - as opposed to copying everything from your old hard drive - on the new drive, then you will need a Windows disc.  And, since you could not create a system disc from a recovery partition on your hard drive, as the manufacturer intends users to do, then you will need to buy Windows and that would be a significant cost.

A lower cost option which would let you restore the system to its original configuration is to contact the manufacturer and inquire about buying and OEM disc from them.  There's a good chance they have it and the cost is a small fraction of the cost of Windows on the retail market. I think I found what I need at Toshiba's web site.
 I ordered

SW Media - DVD-QOSMIO-X305-Win Vista 32/64bit Home Prem-EN
That's supposed to be the recovery OS for that laptop.

Hopefully I can use this with my new hard drive?? and not just SIMPLY bring the existing one back to factory specs??
  Wish me luck!
