Solve : This USB device can run faster?

Answer»

I'm getting the error warning 'This Device can run faster' when I plug in a USB device. This is on my other PC (WinFast 761GXK8MB Vista Prem 64bit). It states on the MB manual that it is USB 2.0, however according to SIW (Topala) USB 1.1 SUPPORTED, USB 2.0 not supported. I have read elsewhere on this forum that it may REQ. chipset drivers. These I cannot find on Foxconn's site, only a d/load for USB drivers for up to WIN 2000 ( which has no effect) I cannot use the driver disc which came with the MB as there are no vista drivers on it  (from a previous post by me) as it states 'This disc is not for this motherboard' Everything else works well otherwise. Perhaps someone can help with this? Regards to all. AlexmaFront ports...probably USB 1.1...

Do you mean that you get the same message when using the front and back ports?Mobo is as stated 761GXK8MB is all it states on the documentation. However , it also states P/N:01-185761GBOM-40-G I'm assuming this is the Part Number.Quantos, Yes I get the same warning for either front or back portsThe BOARD is listed as having eight USB 2.0 ports.

Yes this is the Mobo. But how do I find chipset drivers? I think they are SIS?Does Device Manager identify the USB name for the Host Controller?  Then go directly to the chipset manufacturer for the driver.

You need Vista Prem 64bit

Solve : MBR Failure?

Answer»

Here's a tough one for ya'll.

Friend of mine's laptop stopped working all the sudden.  MBR Not Found; which I know is the Master Boot Record.  I assumed this would be an easy fix, but Recovery Console stated the 'Hard Disk could not be found'.  So, I poked my head into the BIOS and sure enough the dumbed-down version of HP's BIOS couldn't tell me anything.  So, I pulled the HDD out and hooked it up to my computer.  I would've used an external case, but the one I have for 2.5" is a little older and only works with Parallel, not SATA.  So, using the internal SATA on my computer I connected it and checked the BIOS.  Hey, looky, there it is.  So, I boot to my Hard Drive and for some reason my computer hung on the WINDOWS 7 Logo.  Couldn't say why 'my' OS would hang because of another Hard Drive (slaved, like it should be) having a Boot Sector malfunction.

I really would like to try it with an external but I have a FEELING it would only crash my Disk Management Utility or, for no other reason than to TICK me off, get a Windows STOP message.

My analysis; The HDD got Degaussed.  This is the only assumption I can make for the MBR's corruption, but the HDD still showing up in my BIOS.  However, it doesn't explain why it would keep my computer from booting up unless there's some unnecessary reason Windows needs the boot sector working on an HDD that it's NOT installed on.

I even tried moving my HDD down to SATA 5 and putting the failure of an HDD on SATA 0 (because 0-3 are the only ones affected by this next step:) and changing the settings in the BIOS to Raid Legacy...because who knows what that laptop is programmed to unless I call up HP and argue with their worthless support staff.

Any ideas would be super awesome sauce.1.  PROBLEM Hard Drive.
     a.  Use the bootable hard drive diagnostics (CD-R or FLOPPY disk) from the manufacturer's website to test the drive.
     b.  What operating system(s) were installed to the hard drive?
     c.  What is the disk structure (primary partition(s), extended partition)?
     d.  Is there also a recovery partition on the drive (hidden or visible)?

I actually 'have' TestDisk and though I didn't think to use it, I do not believe I can.  Or, it's unnecessary.  I actually got Recovery Console to work on 'my' computer.  Same XP disc that I tried on his laptop, but for some reason my computer was more willing to cooperate.

All I could get in Recovery Console was the HP_Recovery partition and even 'that' wasn't working.  It wouldn't even give me the option of working with the partition the OS was on (XP, so I assume the structure was NTFS.).  So, I tried DiskPartition and found out that the partition the OS was on had an UNKNOWN label (no structure info or anything) with 84,XXX Bytes and 84,XXX Bytes available...so that answered a question right there; the OS was just 'gone'.

The owner of the laptop is going to provide me with his Install Discs and Charging cable tomorrow and I'll attempt to format it hoping that the drive was only magnetized and not physically damaged...which I can't see it being that if Recovery Console can identify every sector and account for every byte.

It's not every day you get a computer that's been magnetized...  One of more rarer PEBCAC errors.

Solve : computer won't boot, graphics card failure?

Answer»

The last two times I shut my computer down it froze during the shutdown process.  Now it won't start back up.  It's giving me the diagnostics numbers 2 and 4, which signals  graphics card failure, so i TOOK my graphics card (Nvidia geforce 8600 GT) out to look at and two of the capacitors have large cracks in the top of them.  i took the card out and tried to use my integrated card, but it gives me the same diagnostic lights.  i tried putting my old ATI radeon card in, and then it gives me lights 1,3,4, which the manual doesn't list as a combination, and the computer shuts down and restarts every ten seconds or so.  took the radeon card out, and it gives me 2 and 4.  ANYONE have any ideas about what could be causing this??Unfortunately that card may have taken the board out with it...
CHECK for similar looking capacitors on the MBoard itself...if you SEE any looking like that the board will need replaced....or if anyone in your area works at board level you could gamble on having the bad caps replaced.

Solve : DVD Drive is RAW?

Answer»
OK, this has happened to me before but i cannot remember what i did. Anyway, my DVD drive says that it's format is RAW. It will not play dvd's or even acknowledge that there's DATA on the disks. Soon as you close the tray with a dvd in it changes to a cd drive. Help!

I've Windows XP, the DVD drive is a HP LIGHTSCRIBE RW.

Thanks
Anybody??  DVD drive is in RAW format, or DVD put into DVD drive is shown as RAW format?Don't hold me to the exact numbers, but RAW video, but if I remember right, RAW video is straight out of a video camera, and is TOTALLY uncompressed, and is about 270 Mbs.  That would fill up a DVD pretty fast.

I've never seen the option, but there may be some instances where some one would need to record RAW video to a DVD for brief clips.

Check your settings on your software.Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem started?

Did you make any changes to the computer right before this started?

The DVD drive, in MY Computer, say Format unknown - but when i put in a blank disk or a pre-recorded DVD (not a copy) then it does not play and the format changes to RAW. When a blank disk is inserted it reads that the disk has no free space available and the format is RAW.

I have uploaded video from a digital video recorder recently but i did not burn to disk. The video is still on my hard drive.

Oh, yes, last week i burnt a CD that was a compilation - made up of different tracks from albums that i own. The CD plays fine.

Any ideas anyone???
Good grief. I check the settings again and clicked off the 'Enable CD recording on this drive' and now everything works. It now recognizes DVD's and blank disks.

Is this normal, am i missing something here??Nice

Solve : Slow PC performance, which hardware should I upgrade.. pls help!?

Answer»

I have an Intel Celeron 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 PC, with 1G of DDR RAM, a 256MB Nvidia GeForce FX5500 SERIES video card and IM using Windows XP. My problem is.. i have this game called Warcraft III Frozen Throne, but after more than 40-50 min of playtime the game just keeps on FREEZING.. im pretty much sure that i fit the system rquirements of the game and im only playing it at 1024x768 resolution with low extra details and effects.. i doubt that theres a problem with my video card. On the other hand, i have a 1G of DDR RAM, but my PC is running several neccessary programs like anti-virus and stuffs, plus i have a fully customized desktop, which i think adds to the consumption of the memory. Please I need your help, do i have to REPLACE my video card with a higher specs or should i increase my RAM?? Hoping for your quick and sincere response... Thank You!First off, the reason your game is freezing may or may not have to do with your computer specs. And if you are using this machine for a LOT of gaming, I would look into a newer pc.  Personally, I would not put a lot of money in your current rig if I was going to use it to game.  That said--

Ram would be your cheapest upgrade (assuming you motherboard will accept more than 1 gig)

My guess is you would see the most performance increase with a video card. The Celeron CPU is probably the bottleneck here so i'd have to agree with hejlikLoL! This PC was stocked in the basement since when? Stone Age i think.. i just upgraded a few parts to see if i can still use it.. the game that i mentioned doesnt necessarily requires super computer type, and no, im not using this PC for other games than that. i just assembled it for typical gaming and surfing only.. but i would consider your advice! and i checked the specs.. the board can take up to 1.512G of RAM but my VGA slot can only take a 5500fx series of video card (256MB), i'll probably just give it to my younger brother ^^

Thanks!

Solve : is my CD/DVDrom defective??

Answer»

i have a small network (6 computers). I wanted to re-format one of the computers because it is running too slow and there's a frequent virus notification via AVIRA (free download i got online). I was thinking that if i reformat the COMPUTER, it will run faster and no more viruses.

the computer i want to try to reformat doesn't have a CD/DVDrom so i tried to connect one CD/DVDrom by connecting the IDE cable (the flat & broader one) + the power cable coming from the CPU. But FIRST i made sure that the CMOS was set up to CDROM as the 1st boot device and the harddrive as 3rd boot

i restarted the comp and hoping thst it would take me to "SET UP" but it didn't. It only continued to start up to windows.

I couldn't provide the system INFO because when i tried to open it, it says:  CANT COLLECT INFORMATION Cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software. Windows Management  files may be moved or missing.  I tried at the control panel SYSTEM PROPERTIES and it showed: MS WIN XP, Professional Ver. 2002 Servie pack 2, 512 MB RAM

With this, i don't know if my CD?DVDROM i am using is defective for not displaying the set up. Pls help me analyze this problem.

Thanks a lotYou don't necessarily have to boot from the CD/DVD drive to install Windows XP.  Not sure if this leaves the door open for viruses and/or malware, but you can kick off a Windows XP installation from the existing operating system.

Boot the current Windows XP operating system.  Place the Windows XP Install CD in the CD/DVD drive.  After the drive spins up, see if you can access its software.  Navigate to the :\i386 directory and look for either the "winnt.exe" or "winnt32.exe" file.  The first is a 16-bit executable which is used to setup the operating system when you boot from the CD; the later, the 32-bit executable which may be used to setup operating system from an existing 32-bit operating system.  You may use either one, but the later is the better choice (more options available).  Double click the "winnt32.exe" executable and follow the setup procedure to completion.

If the option presents itself, you should delete the current windows partition and recreate it to wipe out any malware residing there (and hope there's nothing in memory to reinfect).

You should backup your "data" before you install the fresh operating system to avoid losing it.

If this doesn't work to your satisfaction, we'll have to determine why you're not booting from the CD/DVD drive.  Or let us know if you'd prefer to troubleshoot the CD/DVD boot issue.I COULD be wrong here...but i don't think you can run the setup from within Windows.Hmmm...  I may be taking a fall here...  Been working on a multiboot system too long - not sure if I've ever kicked it off from within the partition I want to replace.

Change of plans.  Kick off the "winnt.exe" instead of the "winnt32.exe".  Since that normally works in a "bare" machine (no disk based operating system); it presumably would ignore the presence (or absence) of disk based operating system.

Perhaps the original poster (OP) could test this for us.  It's either that or troubleshoot a CD/DVD boot issue (BIOS sees drive, BIOS drive parameters, BIOS boot order, disk jumpers, 40 wire vs 80 wire cable, position on IDE cable. power to drive).

OP:  Let us know what you want or need to do (or what resolved the issue, if known).Sorry for not being able to get back ASAP, Guys.I had some prob with connection.
And, THANK YOU too for the prompt response.

About the CD/DVDrom drive,  i took the liberty to open the unit itself coz I was thinking it might be the reason why i can't format my other comp. I discovered that the CD's lens is defective and the CD itself doesn't run anymore.

I will try to ask somebody to fix it and then try it again or else i will be forced to buy a new cdrom drive to do the formatting. I will keep you posted.

Thanks a lot and more power to all fo you. Here's the info for when you get another CDDrive:

If the above instructions for configuring your system to boot from CD or you have acquired the necessary boot floppy/floppies; you can now boot the computer and follow the on screen prompts.

Have your Product Key available, typical install is around 30 minutes. If setup seems to hang, wait at least 10 minutes + before restarting system. You should experience momentary screen blackouts.

 1. Power on the computer. Press the Pause/Break key as soon as you see text on the screen.
[If you currently are running in an OS of any flavor,  insert XP CD and restart computer. Skip to #3 if system is configured to boot from CD.]

2. Insert XP CD into CD drive. Press ENTER to resume booting from the XP CD.
(the BIOS is already set to CDROM as the 1st boot priority)

Instead of seeing BOOT FROM CD, i saw; :DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK & PRESS ENTER"

Solve : How to Record "What You Hear" (sound coming from speakers) with Vista?

Answer»

So I need to do some audio recording, and I need to record what is actually coming through my headphones/speakers... essentially whatever sounds are on my computer.. you get the idea.  I used to do it on XP no problem, just switch the recording device to the same as your default playback and you're set.  However, I can't seem to do this on Vista.

For recording, the only two things I see are my microphone and a Stereo Mix.  When I go into my speaker's settings, there is no OPTION to set it to record.  I've also set it so I can see the disabled devices in the Recording section, as many suggest to do to get around this problem.  But unlike them, I don't have a bunch of new settings that pop up (line in, line out, mux thingys, etc).  It's just the mic and stereo mix.  When i set the stereo mix to default recording device, it still just USES the microphone.

I also unistalled the driver that was installed (came installed from factory) and reinstalled a new one, but it didn't fix anything.  Not sure what the actual model of the sound in my laptop is, but I know its Realtek High Def. Audio.  Im running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Any help is appreciated, just need to get this fixed ASAP. Thanks.well if you want to be crazy
hook a double ended cabel from speaker to line in
and turn the volume low so it doesnt clip the wave
worked for melol I guess I could do that, but I don't have one of those CABLES on hand... and I KNOW its possible to just record whatever is playing through your computers sound system.  I did it on XP ALLLLL the time... lol.  Somebody's gotta know how to fix this Upon right-clicking on my sound icon in the notification area, and selecting "recording devices", one of the listed items is the "What U hear" setting for my X-Fi.

(and despite the setting in my Profile my OS is Vista )

Hi:

I'm having the same problem with the Realtek High Definition Audio. Its seem to me that this problem comes with inboard mics, (i don't know if this is the correct term). Anyways, i been trying to find a solution for this because trying to use two input jacks doesn't work for me. There's always a latency problem, and If you like to record your  instruments (guitar in my case) you will notice that this is a big problem (Without mention the low quality of the sound).

I read that there is a register tweak you can do, but I don't know if someone with more experience will recommended.  I hope that someone who had the solution can help us both.

PLEASE start your own topicuse MP3 Recorder Studio. It's user friendly, can automatically detect pauses thus saving you disk space. It's also possible to split the file into several parts, to replay your records and to apply various settings to recording. I use it to record my skype calls as well.

Solve : 108:unlock keyboard ????

Answer»

i think my motherboard is now DEAD -.-

i try to revive my old antique motherboard. Its a celeron that i just stopped using since I had new toy computers. then I just challenged myself of reviving it. I installed an xp on my spare HDD using that pc and it worked well. When my brother installed the Nero and restarted, I received a message 108: unlock keyboard during the POST. I was thinking it was just my CMOS so I removed it for 3mins the place it back. It works fine for a while but after giving another restart, the error came back. I try to give it another CMOS reset but didn't work. I turn the pc on and off for few times but no luck.

after 10mins, I went back to that compuer and turn it on and this time I have no screen output anymore. I could feel my CPU still running but no screen display.

ugh. I was reviving it just for fun anyway but I wanted to have some SECON opinion if my mobo is now officially dead.

I had it back in the 90's by the way and got stucked for 8 years now if I'm not mistaken.Try Red...Try Red?  What the...

Replace the CMOS battery.  That sounds more of a likely culprit than anything.  Afterwards, set your date/time in the Bios and load fail-safe defaults. Quote

Try Red?  What the...

I think he was referring to using green print on a gray background that made it hard to read.

If the computer was in storage for eight years I'm surprised that the battery worked at all.well i've tried opening it once in a blue moon. i use it for OS testing. a dummy pc. for hard programming etc. last month i used it to intall xp in an HDD and ship the HD to my cousin. It worked well till yesterday.

I found a cmos battery from one of my dummy pc. I havent used it for a long time too. that battery didnt worked with the pc that I'm working with. I actually DONT want to give much time buying another cmos battery if that wont guarantee that it would make the celeron work(no time to go on shops-playing with my dummies at graveyard). but ofcourse if you guys think it would still work, I'll give it a try.

have i mentioned that the last time i try to open it, i had no screen output anymore? but the cpu is still running?CMOS batteries don't cost as much as many fast food hamburgers so it's not a big investment even if it doesn't work.

I'd give it a shot.

yeah. i know.

its just that i work during store hours(even on holidays) and dont have a car.. -.- I help running a business of someone during weekends ESP this season and playing at my dummies during graveyard(i sounds like so workaholic).

anyway, I'll find time buying a new one. (else stealing one from pc's that surrounds me here at the office its holiday here. lesser people could caught me haha)Net time you renew your prescription for Prozac,  tell the Drug est your also need a hearing aid battery and have them delivery the pills and the battery together.

if we only have such delivery here. haha. what we usually do is call for pick ups.. OH SOUTHEAST ASIA. why are technologies late out here.

There is no HDD in the CPU. The CPU is the "Central Processing Unit". It is that little bitty thing that attaches to the mother board and processes all the information. There is no way you can "feel" this running. I think you mean the computer and not CPU.

Is your cousin a student that qualifies for a "Student Alliance Account"?

No comment on the last line of the quote. IM talking about the case. duh? HARD DISK DRIVE attached to the motherboard? leds blinking in the case and the mobo? Quote from: AG0 on November 29, 2009, 11:30:44 PM

you said you could feel the CPU running. the CPU makes no noise and causes no mechanical disturbance within the case. The closest thing to it would be the heatsink fan, but having a heatsink fan running makes no implication about the state of the CPU. LEDs blink on the case and mobo whenever the power is turned on, wether the computer is working or not, and are often used in combinations to present where in the boot cycle the PC faulted (used mostly when video has not yet been posted and the BIOS needs to report an error).

That aside; either replace the CMOS battery or stop worrying.

Solve : ♠ati x1950 driver fails running widescreen in Bioshock?

Answer»

While running Bioshock with a Gigabyte MB / 2.4 DUAL core/2 GIGS ram/with a raptor 10,000 rpm drive and a PCI express ATI X1950..........the screen goes blank after approx. 15 minutes of PLAY....a few seconds elapse and sound restores and a few seconds later game starts back up where I left off. Just upgraded the drivers for the card. I'm wondering if there is a setting I'm missing in the CONTROL panel for the card. RESOLUTION is set to widescreen...1980x1020 . Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Did it work before you upgraded the drivers?

Solve : Northbridge Cooler?

Answer»

Older computer with asus mobo and amd chipset.  The fan on the  northbridge is out and I can't find a replacement.  I removed the fan and the housing that holds the fan is still attached over the CHIP by two spring-loaded attachments at diagonal corners----it appears I'll need to remove the mobo to remove the fan housing from behind.  The fan size is 40mm square.  I can purchase heat sinks that are 37mm.

Q: Are the two attachment holes on the mobo standard.  In other words, if I purchase a northbridge heatsink, will it fit?I can't think of a processor fan that would be mounted on the underside of the motherboard.  However, I have seen some fairly ludicrous methods for mounting a CPU Fan/Heatsink combo.  Look at the pins that hold the fans frame down.  There may be some difficult-to-see instructions on them, i.e. Arrows that indicate a necessary turning or perhaps lift pin that's just VERY snug and may take an ounce of gutsy muscle to disengage it.

I have one that requires you to turn the thumb piece to the left to unlock the lift pin, then you have to squeeze the thumb piece and the lift pin together with all the strength in your index finger you can find and that corner pops off the mobo all its own.  All my smarts and took me a half hour to figure that out.  Not to mention it was Best Guess which WAY I turned the thumb piece for lock and unlock.

As for where to buy.  Try newegg.com  Their Advanced SEARCH function allows you to filter down to exactly what you need.

Good Luck! It's a strange setup.  The fan housing has spring-loaded pins attached to the mobo somehow ... no instructions or obvious ways to remove it.  I've decided to take it apart because I need the experience.  Maybe I'll just put a whole new fan assembly on.  I wonder if it's necessary to put thermal grease between the chip and metal fan housing?

Thanks Lyniaer. If you take the OLD one to a PC store they should be able to match it up for you...

Thermal paste is recommended.More like necessary.

Just put on no more than a dime-sized dallop.  Too much and you'll isolate the heat onto the processor instead of transferring it to the heatsink.

Solve : Brother lazer printer feed problems?

Answer»

I currently have a Brother MFC 7340 all in one machine. The problem is that WHENEVER I put in a batch of checks or invoice
forms to be printed, increasingly they begin sticking together, causing jamming and ruining several forms in the process. It's gotten so bad that I only dare put in 1 form at a time, which really screws up productivity, not to MENTION pisses me off a lot!
I roll the forms end to end & side to side to loosen them up, but to no avail. Previous to this, I had a Brother MFC 8220, which worked well for 5 years 'til it began doing the same thing. Is there a basic design flaw in the feed system of Brother MACHINES, or is there somethin I can do to correct this problem?  At the same time I bought the new all in one, I  purchased an HL2140 (printer only) for use on another computor and it's starting to do the same thing with invoice forms. Only rarely does either machine pick up more than 1 sheet of plain paper. I'm usinf good quality, lazer rated paper in all applications, 20# and 24#. Any advice would be appreciated, including opinions on what other brand of lazer all in one that will work better.Normally the paper sticks together because of humidity. Look for things like how have you changed the storeage of the paper. Is it near a open window or door? Or have you moved the printer?

One other thing you can look at is if your vendor has changed how they make the forums....or if you changed vendors.

Something has changed.......

What software is this?  Do you know whether other users of this software have had similar problems?I will respond to both of you- I live in Denver, Co., so humidity is not much of an issue. My office is in the southwest corner of my home, so it gets the maximum amount of sunlight & heat each day. The checks and invoice forms are from NEBS, which is where I've gotten them from for 20 years or more. Maybe they've changed their paper or something, but I STILL feel that the problem lies with the paper feeding mechanism on these Brother Lazer machines. I've had 4 or 5 of their lazer printers before and was quite SATISFIED with them, but these 2 latest ones are driving my nuts. Quote

Have you tried to contact the Brother support? They may already know about the problem and have a fix. Let them know you are a business and you would recommend their product.

Solve : Gateway 450rog laptop -- Just not starting up?

Answer»

I have, rather my sister, a Gateway 450ROG laptop.

This particular series has quite a few common PROBLEMS with the video card and the main power unit inside the laptop...

Anyways, here is what was happening:
The computer would stay on for a variable amount of time before the screen would go all "whack-o" and the computer would either just freeze up or restart.

I ruled out a problem with Windows, since this happened while in the BIOS as well. It seems to be a video card problem.

Also, frequently on the computer startup, the fans would stay on for an abnormal amount of time with a blank screen and no hard drive indicators going. It seemed that, if you moved the laptop around at this point, it would continue to START up.

Narrowing it down to a video card problem: (does not explain abnormal startup time)
The computer does weird things to the display when the LCD monitor is moved back and forth.

I disassembled the laptop and checked the cable detaching the LCD screen ENTIRELY from the laptop. Cables were tight, but the main cable to the monitor seemed like it has been under a lot of stress... it looks like it was kind of wedged into the peg thingy that covers the hinges of the screen.

Reassembled the computer, checked for any loose screws by shaking it a bit, put in the battery, and tried to start up.
Nothing.
Connected the AC adapter
Nothing.
Opened the power button and LED panel and manually pressed the button
Nothing.

What am I missing? LAPTOPS never INTRODUCED failsafe switches, did they? (eg. Won't start up until a certain switch or connection is intact)

Or any specialized power diagnostics?
dnt like to state the obvious but could be that the video cable is damaged from being pinned under the hinge. Yeah, that's what I did figure, but I don't think that it would prevent the rest of the computer from starting up... I suppose if it short-circuited it could, but even then I see that as kind of being unlikely.

Then again, it is an older Gateway laptop... those alone have enough problems. Yes I see your point.

Solve : PC shuts off unexpectedly after 5-30 minutes of fullscreen?

Answer»

I have a problem which I thought I'd fixed. When I'm playing StarCraft BW or watching a video FULLSCREEN, my pc sometimes just shuts off after a couple of minutes. No error, no warning, no lag. It just shuts off. There's no problem in turning it back on, neither have I seen any memory loss.

I checked my temps just after turning it back on, they were 25/77°C and 36/96°C, IIRC. Not anything out of the ordinary, I think?

Specs:

Packard Bell
IMEDIA D7000 NL
Pentium Dual Core CPU E5200 2.50 GHz
4,00 GB
Windows Vista (64 bit OS)

I went looking on the internet already, tried troubleshooting at the Packard Bell website, the first hit was the right one: had about the same title as this post.
It suggested that I'd update my BIOS to version R01-A3, which I did. But apparently that wasn't sufficient.

I'm running really low on ideas here. Have you got any idea what might be the problem? Quote

I checked my temps just after turning it back on
Check the temps, while playing the game.
BTW, I don't understand what is: 25/77°C
Do you mean 25C/77F ?
What are those temps for? CPU? Video card?My guess is that it's 25°C out of a maximum of 77°C. I think the CPU was 25 and something else 33, but I don't know exactly.

My point is, if the CPU temps were 77 when the pc shut down, it probably would have been more that 25, which is slightly more than room temperature. If the CPU were overheated, wouldn't the fans (which were are a steady 1500 rpm, IIRC) make a heck of a lot of noise? There was no humming at all.

I don't think it's really a overheating problem, as it just shut down while I was watching YouTube. That's my problem. 3 months old PC's shouldn't collapse under the 'enormous' pressure of watching a YouTube video (this wasn't even full screen). If it's 3 months old computer, DO NOT monkey around. Take advantage of the warranty. You even don't know, what kind of problem, you could expect in the future. What do you mean exactly with monkeying around? I'm not going to open it up. I'm asking you for help because I don't know what to do. If you have no obvious causes, I'll just ask the product support, but I just wanted to check if I wasn't missing anything standard.I think, you didn't read my reply carefully.
If your 3 MONTHS old computer is having problem, I strongly advice you to take advantage of the warranty.
My point is, that 3 months old computer shouldn't have ANY PROBLEMS.
If it does, it may bring you more problems in the future, so it's in your best interest to check it NOW.I know 3 months old pc's aren't supposed to have problems, that's why I am asking you now what my problem could be. I'm certainly not waiting on anything.
Again, what do you mean by 'checking it'?I mean, the computer should be thoroughly checked by the manufacturer, so you won't get into any troubles, when the warranty expires.I've SENT an email to manufacturer's supportmail, so I hope he knows what the problem is.Email may take ages.
I suggest, you call them.My father did, they didn't know what could be causing it except overheating etc.

I'll just wait for the email to be replied. If they didn't know, they should have taken it in.
Your warranty is STILL valid, isn't it?

If you want to pursue some other ways, that's your choice.
I suggest trying www.speedfan.com

Download and install SpeedFan and monitor the temperature of your GPU.  If it gets up over 200F then there's your problem.  If your computer doesn't have a stand-alone GPU (meaning video's integrated with the mother board) you might have a RAM issue because the video accelerator on just about any onboard GPU can't handle gaming; low resolution settings or not.

I agree with Broni.  Explore RMA options first.virus maybeI'm running CoreTemp now, it standard says that my CPU is 34-37°C, it just shut down probably at 45°C, which is no where near 90°C (about 200F). So I can hardly imagine that that is the problem. On the other hand, when my pc shut down yesterday, it wouldn't restart the first time, only the fan was roaring. After a second restart it worked 'fine'.

I don't think the videocard or my pc's capabilities are causing it, as the pc is new and the games/videos work fine on my 10 year old pc.

Gremlin could be right as well.

Anyway, we're going to bring it to the shop next week.

Solve : My Speakers work but headphones don't work.?

I have creative Soundblaster 5.1 speakers and they work fine.  I can't get the headphones to work out of the CD jack or the sound card jack.  Computer is in same room as tv and I want to LISTEN to downloaded music or VIDEOS without disturbing.  I have been to control panel and followed thru with SOUNDS and devices ADVANCED settings.  Can ANYONE help?  ThanksSince you are familiar with the sounds settings in control panel I'm guessing that you have changed the settings under speakers and advanced to 5.1.

Try changing the settings to plain stereo and see if the headphones work then.

Typically, the headphone jacks are just a mechanical connector with no software control.

About 60 GB on my computer, 50GB on the wifes and 50 GB one the trailer computer. Oh the grand kids game computer is about 20 Gb.
Way too much for flash drives.  I would not bother partitioning, make a directory for each of the 4.  If one or more of the 4 grow beyond the initial 4 partition sizes, you would have to resize.  Why go to that trouble?  Unless you plan to leave it connected all the time,  I would recommend a 2.5" external HDD.  They're self-powered and small enough to fit most anywhere you like.  WD Passport or Seagate FreeAgent 320GB units are about $70.Sorry, I disagree. If you want to partition, then partition. All of my external drives are 500 Gb drives and all have several partitions. On those used for image backups, each system has its own partition.  I do agree WD is a good choice, but I like the MyBook series. Regardless, do a little homework and select a drive that seems to best fit your needs and then either partition or don't, but make frequent use of the imaging software I was looking at a my book 1.5 TB. The plan was to put five partitions on it for the computers,100GB for each computer and the rest for movies and pictures. The reason I wonted to use partitions is it is my understanding that if one partition gets a virus it isn't spred to the other partitions.Sounds like a good plan. Go for it. Quote from: I Shooter on November 30, 2009, 07:23:38 PM
The reason I wonted to use partitions is it is my understanding that if one partition gets a virus it isn't spred to the other partitions.

Actually, analyzing this requires an understanding of exactly how viruses spread.

Many users think that viruses simply spread- like spilled ink or milk- that is, a virus is stored on a disk, and it AUTOMATICALLY spreads out. This is in fact not what happens.

See, a Virus is simply a malicious program designed to make copies of itself- in order to make copies of itself, however, it needs to execute. Viruses have many ways of making this happen, the most common being the manipulation of autorun information by the trojan horse program that delivers the virus (the most common carrier) (A trojan horse, as in Greek mythology, is something bad disguised as something good- a download of a popular game, for example, that is infested with viruses).

Once the virus executes- it is not restricted in any way about where it copies itself too. Partitions are meaningless- so are folders. One method that viruses propagate is by hooking some File access functions used by all windows programs, such as CreateFile(). Then, whenever a program ACCESSES a file, the virus infects it if it can.

A common M.O of viruses is that, if they are run from a removable drive- they deliver themselves to the local machine somewhere safe- them whenever further removable drives are inserted they are also infected. What this means is that if a virus get's on one of your partitions- and somehow runs- then it will likely infect the PC itself. this gives the virus, as I said, free reign, and chances are the next boot or the next time the external is unplugged/plugged in the other partition on that drive will be infected as well.

That being said, while that particular use is based on a misconception, using separate partitions for separate computers can help organization considerably.Let me see if I understand this. If I down load every thing for the computers in question to this drive. Then say that the wifes computer gets a bug, her computer has had plenty, then I up date the down load and put the bug on the drive that the bug will get through the partitions to the other parts of the drive. Now understand that the only time that a partition will be run is to back up or fix a computer. Except for the last partition and that will be to store movies and pictures on. Now lets say that I down load a picture from the net and it has a bug. When I down loaded it I infected my computher and the partition that my stuff is stored on. Till my wife or one of the grand kids down load that file to there computer it can not infect there computer. So then we will say that I find out that I have that bug because of Avast and I with the help of you good people get rid of it or reload every thing on my machine and deleat every thing on the my partition and the partition that the virius was down loaded to that I still have the bug on the other partitions though they were never accessed be any of the infected partitions or computers. I don't see how that can be. It is my understanding that a bug has to be loaded to a file then is spred by contact with other files that are sent or moved. There is no such movement between partichions. Thank you much for your time and help. You need to understand that a partition is a "virtual" separator on a drive. The is no physical barrier between partitions, just a software differentiation. Depending on the nature of the malware, it can indeed spread itself over the entire drive.

What I don't understand is how your wife's system is continually infected. I've been working with computers since 1985 and have had (and currently have) plenty of computers - and I've never had a virus on any of them. I just don't get how systems are infected. If you do all of the following you will be fine:

1) Install a GOOD anti-virus utility on all computers. Make sure the utility is ALWAYS RESIDENT and is set to UPDATE daily (at a minimum). I use Kaspersky Anti Virus and it updates at least once a day.

2) Do not open emails from unknown sources. Do not open email attachments unless you either expected them or know for sure what they are.

3) If you ignore #2, at least do not click on links in emails from unknown sources.

4) Install either MalwareBytes or SuperAntiSpyware and run a scan once every week or two

5) Install SpywareBlaster, allow it to PROTECT all browsers, and remember to update it weekly

6) Run a full scan with your AV at least once a month

7) Try not to download anything from the web unless you know exactly what it is.

8 ) Create a download folder on your system and make sure EVERYTHING you download from the web goes to that location. You can easily and quickly scan every download with your AV before opening or running it.

9) Try not to navigate to "strange" websites.

I know it sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. And if you follow all of the above suggestions I doubt you will EVER have a malware problem again. Quote from: I Shooter on December 01, 2009, 08:10:26 AM

There is no such movement between partichions. Thank you much for your time and help.

What I'm saying is, it won't spread at all unless you run it, either accidentally or otherwise, but if it does it will copy itself all over the place. I'm not saying that partitioning is a bad idea just that it offers no protection whatsoever from viruses.  If a file infector virus runs from ANY of the computers from ANY of the partitions then it could easily "escape" the partition if it is written to. Of course it won't jump across PCs; the other PCs would have to also run a infected file.

Files don't get infected anyway- Programs do. Sure, an infection could be inside a file, but it cannot spread unless it's executed, so it needs to be in a executable or dll of some sort. Pictures cannot be infected at all.

Basically, if all the PCs have a Anti-virus program and you keep it up to date and you don't download odd files, you should be fine. Partitioning is a good way of organizing the data but it hardly constitutes a PREVENTATIVE measure against viruses or malware- that's what Anti-virus programs are for.

And Allan has thoughtfully outlined some requisites to a strong defense in that category- I might add another entry though; basically, rather then believe everything you read or hear from somebody such as us on the forum or a respected colleague- make sure to do a little research to try to back them up; for example, the idea that partitions serve as some sort of barrier to viruses sounds like it was made up by a best buy employee or something; and content that refutes that can be found with a google search. This way, you won't get burned later or find out the hard way that it wasn't actually the case.In your last post you said that a picture can't be infected. I assume that you are talking about a picture taken from a camera can't be infected. My wife down loaded some pictures of kittens palaying with yarn and they caused me a great deal fo trouble. I had to redo her computer twice becausse of them. The second time I changed virus protection to Avast from Windows One Care and Avast said that the pictures were infected. I deleated them and have had no problems sence. Avast has cought other things that she has tried to down load and kept them out. So I know that pictures can be infected. As for the partition thing I understand that the way you are looking at things they are no protection  what so ever from viruses. In my way of looking at things the more I can keep thing apart the better off I am. I know that a partition can't keep a virus out. Thank you much for your time and information.

Solve : HDMI/VGA to S-Video conversion?

Answer»

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 to use with a projector at my church.  The projector has a S-Video cable ran about 60 ft with a DIRECT plug in for the laptop.  The Inspirion 15 does not have an S-Video input.  Anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to convert my projectors S-Video so I can plug in to my laptop HDMI port.  I would like to have something that I can mount to the wall and then just use a patch cable to go from the wall jack to the laptop.  any ideas??If you have a VGA output on the laptop the following might work.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=s+video+output+cards&x=0&y=0

There are a few s-video to hdmi converters ($200 range) but no hdmi to s-video converters that I've seen.

Does the projector have RCA inputs? TV-Out VGA to S-Video/RCA AdapterGo with CCS recommendation.  $3 beats $42.

BTW, 60' is about the maximum length for a standard s-video cable.I am actually looking for something that I can mount to the wall.  I would like to hardwire the S-Video connection from the projector to a "jack" of some sort.  It's easier to replace a patch cable than to repair a broken S-Video cable.  Sorry for being so vague.
Yes I know that 60' is about maximum.  We hired "the Geek Squad" to do our installation.  The install was PRETTY sloppy.  Now I'm trying to learn so we don't have to hire someone to take care of this sort of stuff.

I really appreciate your help in this.  Video up/down conversion is touch-and-go at best.  Any time you up or down convert a video signal you're looking to degrade or destroy that video's quality to the point where it won't even be visible.

VGA is arguably the only video source that can run almost up to 50' without any noticeable degradation.

In my honest opinion, for what you want to do, I would consider some other type of projector and have it professionally installed with a VGA cable running to your destination (if you have a VGA out on your laptop, that is).  Avoid "the Geek Squad" if you can help it.  Most of them are novice at best and they actually refused to hire 'me' because I was 'over qualified' for what they were willing to pay.  Your wallet may suffer a little more for a professional A/V Installer, but it beats HUNTING for an animal that doesn't exist only to get little to nothing for your efforts.

If this is a temporary solution you're looking for, go with that adapter from Amazon: you've got nothing to lose but 3 bucks...which will be a pittance next to a more permanent solution that makes you happy. Thanks everyone for your help.

      Hello;

I'm working on building my own PC, and Im finally down to ordering the last part; the motherboard.

I need it to be compatible with my other hardware, support 1600 fsb, Intel Socket LGA 775,  DDR3 PC3 12800 RAM (minimum), have atleast 1 PCI-E x16 2.0 slots (preferably 2), and have good overclocking capabilities.

The other components going into the build are as follows:

I'm looking for best value on this. I don't mind spending the money, as long as the extra money means extra performance gains, no matter how small. I am willing to spend up to the $250 range, but it must be compatible and able to run all the other hardware at factory standards or higher.

Thanks,
NNJZ (formerly known as Image)

What CPU have you purchased?

Make/model/speedsorry, it took me awhile to post my hardware SPECS; they are posted now.If you want to go with an ATX case, I think this board will fit your needs..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135230

It has 2 PCIe 2.0 slots for SLI/Cross Fire Setup...  so basically, since you're using an SLI-ready video card, you'll have ROOM to take advantage of that and expand, if you wan to add another similar video card and run the two cards in parallel, so to speak.

It meets your overclocking needs, supports ddr3, up to 8 Gb ram, built in Gigabyte Network Interface card, and supports you cpuIf you didn't buy the CPU yet, get a Core i5 or i7 CPU and a good P55 motherboard.
If you bought it, get a good 775 board. LGA 775 is getting obsolete.      I would have suggested the p55 chipset, but I assumed he already got the cpuYou would really recommend an ECS MBoard ? ?

Any reason why ? ?Nothing about ECS in particular that I love, but that particular board seems to have decent reviews..Did you say good reviews?
Pardon me for interacting, but I never heard that motherboard!
There are so many websites that claim to have reviews on most EVERYTHING. Here is just ONE of many.
http://www.motherboards.org/
when I looked around there it seems I was not able to find the motherboard mentioned, or else it was not in the obvious places. So why is it such a highly rated motherboard?Relax....  breath.............

Who said it was a "highly rated" board?    I said it seemed to have decent reviews based on the places I looked...

If it bothers you so much, why don't YOU recommend something...

ASUS
Has a wide range of choices.

Look these over:

Here's an interesting tidbit- people are more likely to COMPLAIN about something if they are not satisfied, and if they are satisfied, they are less likely to post a review.

if you cannot find comments about something, then chances are it's satisfactory. However- EEVIAC found decent reviews. Now, a decent review may be saying the motherboard is "decent" but really it's saying it's better then that- a motherboard that is "decent" or what was expected would probably not cause somebody to review it- there are probably other redeeming factors that made them want to recommend it; or at least, mark it as something that wouldn't be a bad choice.

computer info...
windows 7 ultimate
asus m2n32 motherboard sli deluxe
4 gb ram
amd dual 2.8 processor
1tb hd
just purchased this computer on ebay.
WORKS great except... won't play high end games with the ATI x700 pro video card it came with.
I have a geforce 8500GT 512MB and when I install it and then start my computer it goes really slow...
sometimes I make it to windows and sometimes it freezes before i get there. lags really bad no MATTER what.
As soon as i put the x700 card back in it runs like a champ.
I just ordered a 2nd 8500gt card so I could bridge them together but I don't know what to do to correct 1st board issue. Any suggestions?Ensure you have the correct and latest drivers I have the disk for this video card used it with no luck. Downloaded and installed the drivers from PNY specifically for windows 7 64 bit. STILL no luck. Also went to Asus and their site suggested some drivers which I downloaded and still no good. No matter what I do with the 8500GT I have a slow boot and slowness of loading windows (real slow) but as soon as I put the X700 card in it works fine. I put a fresh install of windows back in. I have ran the start up repair program and I am stuck. Anything else to try? I could not find anywhere online a compatibility list for this motherboard against this video card but it looks like some people were running this setup fine.

Solve : Finding a webcam. Spending way to long trying?

Answer»

I have been trying to FIND a webcam for about 2 weeks now. I don't want to just buy one for it to not be what I need.
I want it for clear pictures and video.
Something under 30 dollars.
It has to have a built in mic so I can just TALK with no wires.
I don't even know what the best resolution I could have for a webcam is so it's been difficult to use search engines.
Any advice? You won't find a reputable brand for that much, but there are are lots for under $30 on Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010290152%204093&name=%2410%20-%20%2425

Most of the ones in that price range only do 640x480 (which is low for a cam anymore). If you want a good brand and those features, spend $40-60 and get a good LOGITECH, Creative, or Microsoft cam. They also come with at least a 1 year warranty. You'll find the cheaper cams don't have mics, are low resolution, have little (30 DAYS) or no warranty from the manufacturer, or are just CHEAP pieces of crap.

Here's a Logitech one with what you're looking for, but it's $41.99 ($34.49 after $7.50 mail-in rebate).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104316Free shipping also in effect now, so you won't find a better time or source to buy that particular model. You won't get a good webcam with a integrated mic but you can get a $20 Webcam and a $10 Mic. Solve : laptop fan making loud noises?

Answer»

i RECENTLY received a laptop as a birthday present a while back in october, it was WORKING FINE up until  the start of november. it started off by making small vibrating hums but now its more of a whirring NOISE, its very annoying and it stops me from going on my laptop now. does any one have any ideas? Some laptops have noisily fans. You can go into the Dell support site to see if there is a SPECIFIC problem with your model.
It would be unlikely lthat moving a laptop would do it harem...
unless it was dropped.
Find you model number and service tag and go to
www.dell.com/support
It could be an airflow problem and overheating problem with the fan speeding up to cool the machine.

Someone recently posted they used 4 coins under each corner and that quieted down the fans.

There are also some laptop cradles that raise the rear of the laptop for improved air flow and easier typing.thanks for the help, ill try all these out

Solve : Graphics card concern.?

Answer»

okay, my question..
i had an OLD dell dimension 4700 with a pci express graphics card in it.  that computer had some serious problems.  no matter how many times i attempted to fix it, it persisted to have "bad pool caller" death screens, "irql not less or equal" death screens, etc.  and i was just wondering.  if i took the graphics card out of that computer, there is no way that the card is corrupted and it could cause damage to my new computer?  if that made no sense, let me know and i will reword it for better understanding.Failing hardware on 1 machine could be anything...but it can't create the issue on a fully functioning component...
If it's not the card at fault it should run fine in the new system.
BTW i suspect the PSU on the old system...really? i was suspecting either fauly RAM slots or ram sticks.
what makes you think that would be the issue, because that is no PROBLEM to replace, i have tons.Random inconsistent error messages is what makes me suspect uneven power.

Easy enough to swap a known good one in of the same or greater wattage to eliminate it as a suspect.

Good LUCK...and keep us posted.well thank you, i hadn't even taken that into mind as a possibility.
but it's better to eliminate all the suspects and find the culprit.
thanks for the help,

Solve : What are my PCI slots??

Even though I posted about a video card PRIOR, I went to CNET and got this info regarding the PCI slots (free) on my PC:

2.0 ( 2.0 ) x PCI Express X1 - LGA775 Socket , 4.0 ( 1.0 ) x MEMORY - DIMM 240-pin , 1.0 ( 1.0 ) x PCI , 1.0 ( 1.0 ) x Processor , 1.0 ( 0.0 ) x PCI Express x16

I'm pretty sure the last one this means I have a PCI-Express x16 slot but does the first one mean that I have 2 PCI-Express 2.0 slots OR 2 PCI-Express slots?FORGOT to ADD that this is a Gateway ECS MCP61-P AM2 Motherboard.1) PCI-E X 16 slot...

2) standard PCI slots...

1) PCI-E X1 slot...Newbie question...

Is there a way to replace or upgrade the PCI-Express slots or would I have to get a new motherboard entirely? No upgrades...

Solve : Grapics Card?

Answer»

I need information on this graphics card a FRIEND recently gave me. Its a black ATI Radeon RV100 DDR graphics card. I was thinking of building a computer with some spare parts I have. Was wondering if its Windows 7 compatible.  I went to the site but the card they show doesn't look LIKE mine. Had no luck looking up the part number. I have 2 numbers both gave me no help.

Fs-sst-ati7000
0352041201

I looked up what an ATI7000 looks like still doesnt match the picture of mine. It has 2 VGA ports and a S video in the front. I TRIED the ATI site but I'm not too familiar with graphics cards the only ones I've dealt with have been build into the motherboard.
Any help I'd GREATLY appreciate.

Solve : Cannot get past memtest86?

Answer»

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything was fine until I installed Google Chrome on it. A message popped up saying I had to reboot to save changes, so I did. When my computer started up, it ran Memtest86+ (before going into Windows or Ubuntu). I let it run, and when it looped back, I pressed ESC, but it came up again once I rebooted. I haven't been able to GET past it. I've checked the BIOS, there is no configuration for Memtest. Is the CD/floppy still in the drive ? ?No, I took it out when I had finished installing. Not sure why it would wind up as a startup item...
Try booting into windows safemode and disable it.Memtest comes up before I can boot to an OS.I have no idea how that could happen...
Without a disk being in.Well this is what happens when I start my computer:

The Dell screen pops up.
A command prompt-type deal appears that says GRUB Loading...
Memtest starts.
If I press Escape it repeats the process.Try Here...

I was unaware it could run in the Grub loader...I will try that, but I don't have access to the disc atm, roommate is using it.Try Alt+escape...or Shift +escapeI tried those, and got the same reuslt as just pressing Esc. As for the link above, when I type $mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/temp/ its says "mount: special device dev/sda3 does not exist."
Then you have a BOTCHED Linux install...
Not sure what to recommend from here other than a wipe and clean install of both OS's.I have a Windows 7 setup.exe, but I can't run it from the Ubuntu CD, do you know what I could open it with (what application)? The reason your system is wonked i'm assuming is your trying to install an OS with another OS running...
This ALMOST never PRODUCES good results.
Decide which OS you are going to use as the main one...backup any data you need from that drive as it needs to be wiped to fix these issues and let us know...How can I get to my files to back them up?

Solve : Problem with Latitude C540?

Answer»

It was a non working hand me down from my son.
After a lots of fiddling I am getting it to boot and work but not consistently.
Sometimes it freezes on boot, sometimes comes up with a blue screen, sometimes while I turn it on the A (caps on) STATUS light keeps blinking for a second and it turn itself off.
Often I can bring it to LIFE by disconnecting all power, removing the battery and removing and reinstalling the memory chips.
It runs WinXP Pro SP3, bios updated from Dell, Dell reset all drivers and reported no driver problem, all service packs installed.
How can diagnose what is wrong?
Thanks for any HELP?
NathanDo you have any information from the Blue screen?
It should have a Stop code, SOMETHING similar to 0x0000000C2, that would be a start.

Can dell tell you what the status light blinking could indicated some sort of HARDWARE issue, I would look it up on google.com but I am currently at work.Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

IMPORTANT - Need help with Computer Specs
Hi everyone! I need some really good advice on a number of things, listed below. The more advice from different people, the better. Thanks in advance to everyone that gives input

I am wanting to know what would be the cheapest (but reliable) hardware for a Windows XP Pro 32-bit (may possibly get Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate 64-bit) computer that would have the latest Java, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG Anti-Virus and Zonealarm Firewall installed and running, along with a proxy set up.

It would need to be able to run up to 20 PC emulators (if the specs would cost over $1000, please also give specs for a computer that would run between 5 - 10 PC emulators too), while having each emulator running a java application that has the required specs of '128MB RAM and 650MHz CPU' per application.

Would it be better to set up more than 1 partition for this or cheaper to build more than one computer to do this on?

Any advice on the most efficient way to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

Required Spec Information needed (please supply with recommended brands as well)
Hard DRIVE:
Processor:
Motherboard:
Video Card:
RAM:

Also, if anyone can recommended a smooth and efficient PC emulator that runs well and any information on how to efficiently set up a proxy to prevent my real IP from being detected by anyone that would TRY to gain my IP (or suggestion for Forum section to post a question about this). I am extremely grateful for any help given Is there no one who is able to help me? Quote

This is the part that makes it hard to give you an answer. We don't understand why you want to o multiple emulations on a desktop PC. Normally and emulation is done because of some restraint, such as running just one special program that requires an special system environment . The is seldom done with more that one emulation at a time. In fact, some of the items listed above may not work in an emulation on a Desktop. So you have us confused.

Without transposing private information, can you provide us some concept of what you want to do?  Is this an Academic experiment? Is this to be a BUSINESS venture? Is this for goverment work?

Something like this is a lot of work for a stranger to be doing.

If this is a serious matter, I would go direct to a local PC shop.

For the 20 Emulator PC, you want to go above the minimum, or else your emulated (OSes I'm GUESSING? for multiple SETi/Folding at Home runs?) you would be looking at at least a high range (8 core) Core i7 and at least 4GB of RAM for the XP 32-bit, but with Windows 7/Vista I would recommend at least 6GB, meaning a 64-bit OS.

Power supply, if there are no graphics cards involved, a decent 500W should be more than enough.

Even looking at the case, mobo, CPU and RAM, I think your $1000 mark would be reached quite easily.

If you are looking for a fast machine, go to your local computer dealer, they can sort you out much quicker and easier than we can.

Geek-9pm....it won't be government, they would be given the tools needed for their jobs.

however, like Geek-9pm said, if we had a better idea of what you were trying to do, we might be able to help more.

That's not a monitor, it's a display adapter.I have an adapter that has to female ends and one male end so that i can plug both monitors into my tower.  I've never dealt with my vid card, is it just like popping out the memory and putting a new one in?

As for the Radeon x300 series, yes, i know that's not a monitor, that shows up when i go into properties and then settings for my display.  I figured that had something to do with my problem so i WANTED to be sure i listed that.  Quote from: Katman_09 on January 16, 2010, 06:27:02 AM

That just allows you to show the same thing on 2 monitors. To extend your desktop onto a second monitor you need a display adaptor ("video card") that has provision for using 2 displays independently.

In other words, your video card must have two connectors so that two monitors can be connected directly to it.  Many cards have two types of connectors, or ports.  The types are VGA (also called D-Sub) and DVI.  See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/organization/twomonitors.aspx for an image showing the two types of connectors.

If your card only has one connector, you can either replace it with one that has two connectors or add a second video card in a PCI slot. Radeon x300?
There a many model of this.
Some have the extra connector.
Which model exactly?

Solve : Canon Printer offline every morning?

Answer»

We have this imagerunner 2016 that shows offline on each of our desktops when we come into work each morning. We have RESORTED to unplugging for 10 minutes and that usually does the trick.  The printer goes into energy saving mode after 5 minutes and is left on OVERNIGHT. From what i can gather, the IP Address it shows on my computer is 10.20.20.114 and on the printer itself it says IP address > AUTO DHCP..

Could this have something to do with being left on overnight, and if we did turn the fax printer off after work, WOULD we STILL recieve faxes sent to us overnight?

Thanks alotPower saver settings can be changed. Talk to your network admin and they can change the way the machine works.

Costume made computer
HDD 80Gb
Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
Windows XP home

Hi everybody:
I got an old computer about 5 years, and it began having problems when I try to restart the machine. It didn't display anything on the monitor. I took it to the repair shop and they told me that there was nothing wrong with it. They made me bring the monitor, and they told me that there was nothing wrong with the monitor either.

When I got home, I plug everything back in place, and the computer boot normal, but when I try to open any program, the computer began to run really slow, and the programs began not responding. I scan the computer checking if there was any malware, but the scan lock also.

I decide to reinstall Windows XP and reformat the HDD. The process of reformatting  was successful. I was checking the process until the Windows is installing XP massage appears with the time it will take to finalize the installation. Since it said it was going to take 39 min, I left it alone. When I came back an hour later, there was the blue screen of death displayed. When I restart the machine, there was no beep and nothing display.
All the lights turn on but nothing else.

1. If there is more than 1 stick of ram in it remove all but one and then try the ram one stick at a time and see what happens.
2.Along the same line remove all cards except the VGA card and see what happens. If you are able at that point to get something that WORKS then reintroduce the cards one at a time until something changes. You might also want to (if available) to change the SLOTS of some of the hardware cards.
How many Physical HDD's in the computer? How many optical drives? The basic notion here is that if perchance the problems you are having are hardware related get the connected devices to the bare minimum and then one at a time reintroduce them. truenorthSorry It took to long to reply, but it was actually the RAM...I had 2 sticks in my other PC and I use one to fix the problem.

Thank you once again my friends!!!Great another satisfied customer.truenorth

Solve : Laptop no start up , fans running?

Answer»

Hi. Can I have some advice please. I have a HP Pavillion LAPTOP, when I turn it on I hear the fan and  it all lights up  but there is nothing on the screen what so ever, I have coupled it to an external monitor but still nothing. I have removed WIRELESS card, HD and ram to see if i can get it to post but nothing just the sound of the fan. I have also listened carefully to hear if there is DATA reading from the HD, the HD stays QUIET "no clicking" I have tried to boot it from a bootable disk and safe mode.......still dead. My first thought is the CPU. Can anyone throw some suggestions my way please.

Solve : Internal card reader not working properly?

Answer»

Just Installed a new 5.25 bay mounted multi function panel. It has a multi flash media card reader & writer + usb powered hub + 1394 port + audio ports + sata port. I installed a 2.0 USB PCI card and plugged the multi panel in to the internal usb port on the card. I only wanted the front panel usb ports and the card reader hooked up. The usb ports work fine. The card reader doesn't . I use SD 2 GB cards. I can view the files on the cards while in the card reader but when I try to move them to my computer hard drive I get the error message :CANNOT COPY   :THE PARAMETER IS INCORRECT. I have tried different SD and other formats of media cards with the same results. If I use one of those cheap SD card readers in the usb port on the front panel I can move the files just fine ,so its not the cards or the usb card, it must be the card reader. There is no firmware update for this reader. In DEVICE manager it reports the device is OPERATING PROPERLY. Any one have any ideas what is going on?  Without knowing what computer you have, what USB 2.0 PCI card you have, and what card reader you have; I would say the card reader is defective.  I have 2 COMPUTERS, both with card readers and all slots in the card reader show as drives in My Computer, even with no card inserted.  Both card readers plug into ports on the motherboard, with a 9-pin connector.

Solve : My computer randomly freezes up.. HELP!?

Answer»

Hope this is the right place..

My computer randomly freezes up, I tried formatting twice but it still happens. Any ideas on what it could be?

Tried reformatting in case it was a program/virus but it still happens, checking batteries in wireless mouse & keyboard. Alt-Crtl-Del to bring up the task manager window always un-freezes it for a while, but then it happens again. Sometimes it will randomly go back a screen if I am in an internet browser. Ive had this pc about a year and it just started doing this over the last couple days. Ideas or thoughts on fixes welcome

I am running:
Operating System: WINDOWS Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: P-7805u
BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBL
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 2.26GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 4090MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTSIs this legit Vista copy (6001.longhorn_rtm)?Of course, its what came with my os from gateway via bestbuy. Why?Just checking
Freezing may be caused by number of reasons.
Main ones would be:
*** overheating (when was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?)

*** RAM problem
A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be PATIENT, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

*** hard drive problem
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make SURE, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.
Thanks I will try it.Longhorn ? ?

I can see, he just edited his INITIAL post.
I'm not sure why would that note appear.
You think, it's some bootleg Vista? My dear husband figured out what has been wrong with my computer acting up. A tiny browser button on my wireless mouse was mashed down in such a way you'd never notice unless you looked close. Crazy how small issues cause big problems.

And no its not a bootleg Vista. I am not a hacker/thief etc.

I edited my post since I was concerned by your comment that my info might be offering up some tasty tidbit to a thief. I never had someone mention my dxdiag codes back to me like that.

Considering these comments I really doubt ill post any issues here again.. even so.. I appreciate those who tried to help. Have a good year.

Solve : Need new video card...but which one??

Answer»

Hello all! I'm looking to get a new video card for my PC but I'm not sure what to get. I've been told to get the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT but I have the feeling that it's a little outdated (I could be wrong though). Here are my specs:

Gateway Desktop GT5432
Vista Home Premium 32-bit (no Service Pack)
AMD Athlon 64x2 Processor 5000+ (2.6 GHz, 2x512 KB L2 cache, 2000 MHz system bus)
ECS MCP61-P AM2 Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE
3GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive
One PCI-Express x16 slot
One PCI-Express x1 slot
Two PCI conventional slots

If you need any other info, please let me know. Thanks in ADVANCE for your advise!I'd go with a 1GB GeForce 9500 GT:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162022well that depends on your budget, a 8800 is the classic budget mans video card, with more BANG for you buck that any other card. however i would suggest looking into the GTX260 its an exceptional card for the price; £100 im not sure how much it is in dollars. but thats goodIt also depends on what you're using the computer for. If you're a gamer then you want a more advanced video card but if you're just using it to surf the net, read e-mails, or other standard stuff you don't need to get the most expensive/advanced one on the market I got Midnight Club 2 and can't get out of the menu screen without the PC freezing up. If I can get a card that can play that and my various emulators then I'm good. I don't mind a high end card as long as my PC can handle it without me having to get an additional power source and such.okay so what is your CURRENT power supply? just to let us knowHow do I figure out what my current power supply is?
There is normally a sticker on the PSU...
You may have to remove a side panel...Oh, BTW, my PSU is a DPS-300AB-15B so I'm running at 300W. The specs for my monitor are as follows:

19-inch Gateway FPD1975W DVI 720p Widescreen LCD Monitor

1440 x 900 native resolution
16.2 million colors
Tilt stand
Integrated power supply (100-240V 50/60Hz, 1.2A)

Connections:
AC Input: IEC 320 C6
VGA
DVI-D (Dual link w/HDCP)

Solve : trouble installing graphics card?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 2350, which comes with onboard integrated video.  I just bought an EVGA GeForce 6200 256MB DDR2 PCI card that I cannot get installed.  Here are the steps I have taken and their results:

I installed the card in PCI slot 2 (because 1 was taken).  I could not make it display, nor install the drivers.
I moved the card to PCI slot 1.  The first time I booted up afterwards, the new card displayed the BIOS splash. but went dark after that.
Lots of reboots never resulted in displaying video from the new card.

I know that the graphics card works, because it worked one time, but I have not been able to get it to work since.  I have a feeling that it is a problem with the onboard graphics chipset taking over. I cannot disable the onboard graphics, because the bios only gives me the options "onboard" or "auto".  I have browsed lots of other forums looking at other people's problems, and tried most of the suggestions given there, but to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can make the BIOS turn the control over to the new card? Or if that is even the issue? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanksdid you un-install the previous graphics card drivers and install the new ones prior to installing the graphics card?
try switching back to your old one and doing this chances are it will help.
ive had alot of problems installing graphics card into dell dimension computers before. dell dont make their computers to be self-upgrade friendlyDO NOT install the new driver before the card is installedI had the same problem recently trying to install a nVidia geforce 2mx400 64mb PCI card in a old Dell with on-board video. In device manager I had the yellow ! telling me the device had problems and could not start. I worked on it for a week trying every thing, tried all the PCI slots - downloaded drivers for the card - flashed the motherboard bios to the latest version - disabled on-board video. The new card did start two times for me but no more. I finely came to the conclusion the new card must be BAD. I returned the card , it was TESTED and found to be bad. Received replacement , installed it in PCI slot 1 and it started up and works great. I use duel monitors now. Quote from: jhuns on December 26, 2009, 01:34:38 PM

Quote from: Allan on December 28, 2009, 10:46:32 AM
DO NOT install the new driver before the card is installed

Anyone else have thoughts as to whether or not the drivers should be installed before or after the hardware?  I don't know that it is even possible to install the drivers if there is not hardware there to install them with. There is no other thought. It's not an opinion. The driver is installed AFTER the card is installed. As you said, the driver should not even be able to install if the card is not in place. Is your BIOS version A02? Quote from: cruisin702 on January 03, 2010, 01:24:11 AM
Is your BIOS version A02?
Yes, I am running BIOS version A02, and I have changed the graphics from "onboard" to "auto", with no effect.Dead card..."it worked once" MEANS nothing...It turns out my card wasn't dead.  I got on EVGA's website and looked at the recommended requirements: 250 W PSU.  I had to check out Dell's website to find out what mine was: 200 W.  I bought a new PSU and presto! it worked!Thank you for posting the "resolution".  I learned SOMETHING new today.

Solve : Not being able to view 2nd Partition?

Answer»

I have installed Windows 7 on the computer, not mine. And Before I installed it I made 2 partitions of ONE 600GB hard drive, the 100GB where the OS will be the 500GB just hanging. After the installation completed the 500GB drive isn't showing up.
I wanted to check through the Setup when the computer loads but the keyboard isn't recognized that QUICKLY so no matter what function key you press the computer doesn't register it.

So basically I want to ask if there is a way to go through the cmd to fix the problem.
The computer is brand new, built from scratch.
So any help will be great. Thanks. If you need any more info please let me know.
Thanks.Did you remember to format the PARTITION after creating it ? ?
This can be done thru Disk Management. You probably did not format it. Go to START - RUN - diskmgmt.msc
If the partition shows up as unallocated, just right-click & format it.I'm quicker with Forum lag....

WHat if it won't show up there?
Just asking this so I can cover all the problems at once because they don't have an internet. It'll show up. You forgot to format it QUOTE from: patio on January 14, 2010, 10:03:56 AM

Solve : Problem Installing OS on New HDD?

Answer»

I have an old Dell Dimension 8250 that takes ATA-100 hdd's. I bought a new 80GB one off of Newegg and it says it's fine when I diagnose it, but I can't for the life of me get an OS on there. I'm pretty experienced with installing them and it's usually not that hard but In this case, I just can't do it. If I turn off the drive in settings than the Ubuntu disc will run the install thing, but of course it can't install it on nothing. When I turn it on and try, I just get some errors. I can't get xp to work either. It formats the drive, install the files, and autorestarts but it just keeps doing the same thing over and over. It should be going to the next step after rebooting. I just don't know what to do and I really need to get this server up and running because I told my site I would a while ago and I still haven't.1.  Dell Dimension 8250.  Is this a known working computer?
     a.  When was the last time computer was operational and/or stable?
     b.  What operating system and service pack level was it running?
     c.  How much system RAM (memory) does it have?
     d.  Are you using the 80-wire (40-pin) IDE cable for the hard drive?  Eighteen inches or less in length?
     e.  Give us some configuration information regarding the IDE devices (and how each is jumpered:  cable_select, single, master, slave):
          (1)  Primary IDE channel
                (a)  Master device (using middle or end CONNECTOR)?
                (b)  Slave device   (using middle or end connector)?
          (2)  Secondary IDE channel
                (a)  Master device (using middle or end connector)?
                (b)  Slave device   (using middle or end connector)?
      f.  Does motherboard also support SATA devices?  If yes, how is system BIOS set for IDE/SATA compatibility modes?

2. Hard Drive.
     a.  So which 80 GB hard drive did you get?
          (1)  Make and model number (look on hard drive case)
          (2)  IDE supporting ATA-100 or higher?
     b.  How or what did you use to "diagnose" it?
     c.  Does system BIOS detect and correctly identify hard drive (model number, size)?

3.  System RAM.  Boot standalone memory diagnostic program to verify system RAM OK.  Let it run for a couple of hours.  If no errors, freezes, or spontaneous reboots; it should give you some confidence in the basic functioning of the computer.  Both of the following websites provide "free" downloads to CREATE the desired bootable media.  See www.memtest.org or www.memtest86.com.

4.  Operating System(s).
     a.  Which operating system are you trying to install?
     b.  Which installation media do you have and how is it labeled (Retail, OEM, Volume License)?
     c.  What service pack level or version is the installation media?
     d.  Where did you get the installation media?

5.  One trick is to simplify the hardware configuration for the initial installation; then add the additional hardware and let the fully installed operating system deal with it.  Basically disconnect all drives (CHANGE jumpers), peripherals, and expansion cards not needed for a basic installation.

6.  Errors.  Would these be "state SECRETS" or something you can share with the rest of us?1.
a. About 6 months ago, but that's just because I've put off buying an ew HDD since I borke a pin off the old one.

b. Windows XP PRO. Service Pack 3

c.512MB

d. -skip-

e. -skip

f. No.

2.

a. This one.

b. there was an option to diagnose it after pushing F12 on the bootscreen.

c. -skip-

4.
a. I've trued Ubuntu 9.10, Windows Xp, and Ubuntu 9.10 Serer Edition

b. they're all burnt so idk

c. Xp is service pack 3, I believe. Not sure

d. Ubuntu.com and Isohunt. From what I know, it's legal since I have a legal Serial number on the the side sticker, but I lost the Cd.

Solve : Will this motherboard work with this video card??

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to do a small upgrade to my husbands computer for a cheap as possible.  He WANTS to play a couple computer games that his system just wont handle.  We've got an old NVIDIA 7900 GT that I pulled from my computer that I want to use but his motherboard doesn't support it so I've been looking for a new fairly cheap mb that will.  We also want to up the processor so I've been looking for combos.

ANYWHO . . I'm curious if this motherboard found here - http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=E-K8MC51G-3200-K5&cat=MBB

Will support a 7900GT (Here is a link to the exact card I have http://www.evga.com/articles/280.asp).

Thanks much in advance for the help.

~StephYes, since your 7900GT is a PCI-E card and the motherboard you cited has # One (1) PCI Express x16 slot and One (1) PCI Express X1 slot, that will work.

What about your RAM?  Most likely, you'll need to buy new RAM, also, since the new motherboard probably uses different memory than the old motherboard.  However, to be sure of this, we need to know what motherboard you now have. Thank you for the reply.  That's what I figured but I wanted to be sure.  He's got DDR PC3200 memory in his computer ATM.  Another company that was selling that same set up as geek.com listed that 3200 was compatible with that MB.  So I'm a little unsure on that part of it.  I have an EXTRA PS laying around so I've got that covered too.  I'm pretty sure the rest would just be swapping it over, unless I've missed something.Well, here's comfirmation that DDR PC 3200 will work with that motherboard: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=K8MC51GAwesome.  Thanks so much soybean for your help.  Hopefully this will get him by until we can upgrade mine and pass it down to him

Thanks again!

Solve : Computer not starting up after blackout.?

Answer»

after a blackout, computer doesn't start up.

i tried diff outlets on my apc surge arrest,
i tried diff main power outlets,
i tried leaving it plugged in for a few hours and then start,

but in end still nothing.

this happened previously before, and i thought it was dead so i called APC to file a claim. the guy told me to try diff outlets on the bar and i did. the result was, the computer worked on other ones.  so they said the bar was faulty and sent me a new one. now the same thing happens and even if i try the diff outlets, nothing happens.

i had a few prior problems with the computer before, such as CMOS screen poping up, but that happened once and like a few months ago. then there was a few times where it would goto the windows screen, but not load the desktop. i restarted it a few times and it followed through and worked.  that also occured like a few months ago and never again.

i own a p4 2.8, 1gb ram, gfx5500, 300gb hd. its about 6yrs old.

i searched the forum and looked for possible solutions, but none of the cases matches mine perfectly so here i am posting.  Remove the APC and plug DIRECTLY into the wall receptacle.i tried that also. this nothing.

however, i do hear a small buzz/whistle noise when its plugged into an outlet, apc or wall.  i figured it was a "charge" but ya.

stiill won't start.Any lights, fans starting up, HD startup, beeps?nothing starts up. no lights or beeps.  the only sound is from when i plug it into an outlet, its like a buzz/humming noise, very faintSee if you can borrow a power supply of = or > wattage and swap it in and see it it fires up........Computer was plugged into the apc surge arrester and computer was on or off when you lost power?  It's beginning to looks like the power supply (psu) is damaged.i was using the cpu when the power went out. it was only for like 5secs and came back on.  but when i tried restarting, it dint' work.  its always plugged into the apc.  i tested the outlets with other stuff like light, monitor and speakers and all works fine.

my friend suggested i check if the motherboard light is on, and it is.

as for spare power supply, i won't be able to get one until maybe tomorrow, and might even need to buy a new one if anything.  just wanted to confirm its the problem before spending. It's not confirmed unless you can verify the buzzing is from the psu.  If motherboard light is on, then part of the psu is still functional.  Do you have a voltmeter and do you know how to use it?i have one, but not 100% confidant on how it works. Quote from: chuchuboi on October 27, 2009, 06:26:33 PM

i have one, but not 100% confidant on how it works.
That doesn't do you much good.

ATX Pinout
6-year old computer is probably ATX-P4-Type.

You need to know more about the computer before you buy an new one.
Post back with Computer Make and Model Number.the computer was a prebuilt one, no name brand.  i just remember it was a p4 2.6 or 2.8.

as for the power type, it has 2 thing connecting to the mb.  1 is a square plug and the other is 20pins. same colors as the one you gave the link to.Lay the computer on it's side and remove the side panel.
You test the psu voltages with everything plugged TOGETHER and on.  Voltmeter probes go into the back of the plugs.  Set voltmeter on DC, put probe of black LEAD into any Black wire and leave it there for all tests.  Probe each pin that has a voltage (plus or minus) with the red lead and record the voltages.  Skip pins-8 and 14.
Be careful not to short probe ENDS together when they are contacting voltages.

Notice the color codes:
Org=+3.3V
Red=+5V
Yel=+12V
Blk=Gnd

It appears that the +5V is OK (MB light is on), but one or more of the others (+12, +3.3) is out

Be careful not to short probe ends together when they are contacting voltages.

what does that mean?

so  i keep everything plugged.  then i put the black tip into any of the black wires coming out of the 20pin plug,   and then test the rest with the red wire to check the vols,  excluding 8 and 14?when you say DC  which one?

on my voltmeter, it has

DCV 10, 50, 250, 500
DC Ma .5, 50, 250

Solve : PC boots into XP but no video?

Answer»

I have a pc  that's about a year old. Recently I turned it on and there was no video. After pressing the 'reset' button, the pc reboots and all is fine.
The problem is consistent. Every time I turn the pc off or go into 'standby' mode, the computer comes back on with a 'no SIGNAL' message. I have to power down and REBOOT to make the video work.

I have an ASUS mother board and a Nvidea Geforce 8500gt graphics card.

I downloaded  and installed the latest drivers for the graphics card, but that did not help.

Any ideas?I have a similar pro :)blem. I just turn off the monitor,
wait a bit, turn it back and and all OK.

Cane anybody explain this?
I should note that the computer seems to be booting up. I can hear the Windows XP 'bootup music' but there is no video.
1) What happens when you boot to safe mode?
2) What happens with a different monitor?
3) How does your monitor work on a different system?Ok, I finally decided to try the easy stuff. I opened up the computer and reseated the video card. Viola' everything is fine.

Thanks for the assistance.

Solve : Laptop screen flickers and turns off?

Answer»

Not sure if this is an overheating problem, a video card problem, an LCD problem, a software problem, etc etc.

It generally only happens when I'm playing a game. The screen starts to flicker, almost as if the bulb is dying or something. Eventually, the monitor turns off. The only fix I've found that works is closing the laptop lid and opening it again. In a few more minutes, it happens again. Could some wire be caught or pinched somewhere? The only thing that doesn't make sense to that though is that if I'm not playing a game and, say, leave the computer on OVERNIGHT, nothing happens, it's generally fine. It's driving my eyeballs insane, so any quick help would be much appreciated.Sorry FORGOT to post specs.

ASUS Model G2P
Windows 7 Ultimate x86(not sure what build, 7600 I think)
2GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo [email protected] 2.0ghz
ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1700 512mb

If anything else is needed, let me know.

What also works is, on my laptop, there is an option to turn the LCD on and off. If I do that, it comes back on, but eventually goes back off. I tried UNSCREWING the case to get to where the ribbon cable would be, but there are SOOOO many *censored* screws and the ONE I need to take off to get to the cable is stripped. I called ASUS and they said, since I don't remember when I bought this piece of scrap metal, that I cannot be covered under the warranty. Even if I lie, they still want a copy of the invoice, so I'm screwed either WAY. Also, if I lower the brightness as low as it can go, it really goes crazy and sometimes it makes a sound (almost like a fan dying or something). Not sure if that helps at all. I'm thinking it could be the video card, but what do I know.Download, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Post two sets of readings, while computer idle and while playing your game.OK, thanks for the app, looks useful. Should I have anything checked (like automatic fan speed) or unchecked? Any settings that should be modified?

HD0 - 32C
Temp1 - 31C
Core0 - 47C
Core1 - 50C

This is at idle.

I am going to try to play the game for a few minutes and see what the temps read. After about an hour playing Star Trek Online (beta) on almost max settings, here's what I have.

HD0 - 54C
Temp1 - 101C (anyone need some water boiled?)
Core0 - 95C
Core1 - 96C

So it would seem that the computer is overheating...unless those readings are normal...Which I don't see as being possible...
Yeah, definitely. Max temperature for your processor is listed at 100C and you're getting really close.
Use a can of compressed air to clean all vents, elevate laptop, consider getting cooling pad...

BTW....Temp1 - 101C is most likely your video chipOK, I left the computer on all night to see where my temps would end up. Could it be that maybe a fan is out because it doesn't seem to have cooled down all that much.

HD0 - 50C
Temp1 - 98C
Core0 - 62C
Core1 - 65C

Thanks again.Idle computer should keep pretty much steady temperature, no matter, if it's up for 1 minute, or 1 day.
With laptop there is really not much you can do: clean vents, elevate it, use cooling pad, or.....bring it to the shop to see what's wrong there.
Did you try any of the above?

Not to mention, that laptops in general are really not gaming devices.... Quote from: Broni on January 16, 2010, 10:01:37 AM

Don't you mean 100F?  I think that system is running really hot.

No, I mean 100C. Processor temps are USUALLY listed in Celsius.I know usually they are, but this is what I found on C-net's site for the processor.

Max Operating Temperature 95.0 °F
It really doesn't matter, 5 degrees this, or that way, but my site says 100C: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Duo%20Mobile%20T7200%20LE80537GF0414M.htmlAm I reading something wrong or did one of the two sites make a typo?I have no idea. Either way, the laptop is hot

Solve : New graphics card works on one not another?

Answer»

Hi. I have just installed a new Ati graphics card into a desktop pc and installed the driver (perfect) Until I took the pc back to its owner and booted it up with their monitor attached. The screen is very dark and the text is so hard to read and flickery. I then TRIED it on another monitor (perfect again)  I downloaded the latest drivers and installed them ok but I cannot get it to display properly on the monitor in question. When I boot, it starts the windows logo screen and accounts seem to look good graphically, but just as windows finishes loading flick! of a second it goes dark, flickery and hard to read text on screen. I now know there is a problem with the monitor but i don't think a technical hardware problem because it worked fine until the graphics failed and I had to put in a new graphics card. Can you specify the brand and model of the two monitors your USING?Is there a driver for the display that should be installed? Check the monitors refresh and resolution capabilities.  It could even be a failure in the CABLE for the monitor, a gun misalignment(CRT only), the list goes on.monitor going dark is a sign if it failing. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 14, 2010, 05:49:34 PM

Come to think of it I've seen that with really heavy gaussing as well.  At that point it's usually so FAR gone that it needs to be trashed, but that's with CRT's only.If it's an LCD, then it's a failing screen inverter/backlight.Thank you for your replies. I have further tested the monitor and it works fine, its just as the pc finishes booting into windows the pc monitor goes strange. The graphics card i am using is a ATI Radeon mx9600 64mb, operarting system XP Home. I feel that windows controls the graphics card on initial start up until the driver loads and then comes the horrid change in display. I would be happy for windows to control the card, however I keep getting new hardware found and I have to install the driver then it goes funny. If i uninstall the driver in device manager and restart its fine until I have to repeat the new hardware found install driver Agggggggggggghhhhh!!! Is there a way to stop the pop up new hardware found install driver process?

Any help appreciated AshDownload and install the correct driver. Quote from: Quantos on January 14, 2010, 05:38:18 PM

Or in the case of my brother-in-law, it means he has been drinking and he is pushing all the buttons on the front of the monitor.
